A wife in control or a PRPCC president in need? by Nikoleta Morales Managing editor A movement in the name of “Acción Rescate”, composed of several well-known community leaders was created in August 2012 with the main purpose to set the “injustice” of the Puerto Rican Parade Committee and its current president Angel “Tito” Medina straight. The blame – misrepresentation of funds, cancelation of presidential elections, as well as the cancelation of the Puerto Rican Parade in downtown. The lawsuit is currently in process and the two sides have not reached an agreement yet. “We started the movement because there were a lot of lies; we tried to negoti-

ate with them in good faith,” said Milly Santiago, one of the Plaintiffs and creators of Acción Rascate. “I am very sad about the whole thing. It’s not about the cancelation of the parade or the [canceled] elections, [it’s about] killing the history of the PR community. These people are driving us backwards instead of forward. “ According to the Puerto Rican Parade Committee’s bylaws the president is to be elected every two years by popular vote. In September of last year, the PRPCC was to elect a new president. However, that didn’t happen and “Tito” Medina will remain in office for another four years by a decision agreed upon by a selected board of directors from the PRPCC.

Allegedly, Medina and a board of directors changed the bylaws without anyone’s knowledge and approval of the community. On April 26, 2013, the Plaintiffs and the Defendant, “Tito” Medina, appeared in front of a judge. This is what Medina said in his deposition against the allegations: “What happened is there has to be a decision, lose the Puerto Rican house or make the elections, or lose the house because we owe $32,000 for different years of back taxes on the mortgage,... so we have to come with $32,000 for the IRS for taxes and $24,000 for the mortgage. Then my wife, Carmen Martinez, is the one that came up with the money. Otherwise, we would have lost the house.”

According to an Agreement to Secure Loan with Real Property from March 2011, “Carmen Martinez made emergency on-demand cash loans to the Puerto Rican Parade Committee, Inc, from June 16, 2009 through March 11, 2011, totaling $50, 450.” “Every time they have a problem they want to borrow money to pay the bills. It’s a good business for Medina’s wife. She charges 10 percent interest for the money she lends,” said Efrain Malave, an ex-president of the PRPCC (2000-2004). The Defendant’s lawyer, Edgar Vega, refused to comment on the case stating: “Who cares what they say? I don’t. We don’t have an official response until this litigation is over.” For more on the lawsuit and Puerto Rican Parade Committee’s situation, read next week’s issue of EXTRA. n

“Desafortunadamente, no puedo; soy indocumentado.

Undocumented military students want an immigration reform by Alejandra Herrera

ver 200 Chicago Public School cadets, veterans, active servicemen and women, as well as community leaders gathered at Marine Math and Science Academy on May 28 asking Senator Mark Kirk to support an immigration reform. The event was sponsored by the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights (ICIRR). “Some of these students travel over an hour,” said Todd Connor, Executive Director of Military Programs at CPS. He explained that many of the students who attend a military high school choose to and travel a long way to get to school. “We believe they deserve to go to the military, go to college,” said Connor in reference to the students who cannot serve their country because they are undocumented. “If I did this, I can get there,” said Alejandro Morales, a graduate of Marine Math and Science Academy. “Unfortunately, I can’t; I am

undocumented. I was brought to this country when I was seven months old.” Morales has a dream to become the first-ever Hispanic Commandant of the U.S. Marine Corps. “He led the entire JROTC program Citywide, the Top Cadet,” said Connor in reference to Morales. Morales’ dream depends on a change in the immigration reform. “I am Mexican. I am American at heart. I want to serve this country,” said Morales.

“Ever since I was a young boy, I had the dream to be a military officer. When I realized what the requirements are to become an army officer – be a US Citizen – I was devastated. My hopes and dreams were crushed,” said Jose Pantoja, a senior at the Chicago Military Academy. “The first time I wore my uniform I had Goosebumps. I respect and love this country,” explained Pantoja. “All I want is to be a model citizen, to be in the military and make my dream come true.” During the event the Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act, Senate Bill 744, hit the spotlight. “[The] bill includes a provision that allows undocumented youth to serve their country in the armed forces and be put on a path towards citizenship after four or more years of service,” explained the press release from ICIRR. “I hope the bill does pass,” said Francisco Peralta, a senior at Phoenix Military Academy. Peralta was brought to this country when he was three years old. He shared that he is number one in his class.

5

“I wanted to be a Marine,” said Luis Tellez, a former student of Marine Math and Science Academy. “All you worked for is going to the garbage.” This is how he explained his efforts graduating from high school and not being able to enlist because he doesn’t have a social security number. “It’s painful,” said Tellez. “My mother’s uncles served in the US Military during WWII in the Philippines; had they not been willing to sacrifice, I don’t think my family would have been able to come here,” said Lawrence Benito, chief executive officer of ICIRR. “I’m proud to be DACA-MENTED now!” said Michelle Rodriguez, a sophomore of Phoenix Military Academy. “I came here to the United States when I was three years old,” said Rodriguez. She shared that she will be going to Stanford University this summer for a program thanks to Deferred Action. “It’s about knowledge, service and respect,” said Reverend Walter Coleman. “The future of our country depends on young people like you,” he said looking at all the students sitting down. “This whole mess can end by August,” said Reverend Coleman in reference to the Senate Bill 744. At the end of the event everyone was invited to sign a poster of Senator Kirk in support of an immigration reform. n

Bermudo y Beech-Nut Goya lanza nueva campaña Compilado por Periodico EXTRA

FREE NETWORK CONNECTION

Bermudo and Beech-Nut Goya launch a new campaign Compiled by EXTRA Newspaper The award-winning Puerto Rican journalist Barbara Bermudo and the newly launched Latina brand baby food, Beech-Nut/Goya, announced a national campaign that seeks helping new and future Latina mothers to feed well their babies when they start to digest solid foods. Bermudo is the co-host of the popular Univision’s “Primer Impacto” news show. Beech-Nut/Goya is a whole brand line of Latino food for babies launched last month by the Beech-Nut Nutrition and Goya Foods brands. “As Latina mother, I perfectly know that children do not come to the world by having a directions pamphlet, and that it is important to offer and to receive information about important issues like this one,” said Bermudo. “According to the American Pediatrics Acad-

emy, children must start digesting solid food from 4-6 months of age.” She added that the Beech-Nut/Goya brand offers new products that ease the first stages of solid feeding for Hispanic babies. Bermudo also discarded the myth that says that only homemade food is appropriate for babies. “What is important is to feed your baby only with the best and most nutritious food, that contains natural, pure, and highquality ingredients, with essential vitamins and minerals: a nutritious food with pleasant taste and smooth texture that allow us to keep our Hispanic heritage,” said this mother of a 2 and a 4-year-old girls.

Citizenship status may not limit disaster assistance Compiled by EXTRA Newspaper Illinois residents who are not United States citizens may be eligible for federal disaster assistance for damage from the severe storms and flooding between April 16 and May 5. Only one member of a household needs to be eligible to qualify the entire household for assistance, so parents and guardians may apply for aid from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) on behalf of a minor child who was born here. The child’s information, including his or her social security number, will be needed to register for assistance. Any citizen living in the affected household can apply for FEMA aid. FEMA does not collect information on the immigration status of

other household members who are not registering for disaster assistance. Non-citizen nationals, including those born in American Samoa or Swains Island, or those whose parents are U.S. non-citizen nationals (subject to certain residency requirements) also may qualify to register. Applying for FEMA disaster assistance will not affect one’s eligibility to become a U.S. citizen. Undocumented immigrants from a household with no one eligible to apply for federal financial assistance may still be eligible for programs run by state, local or voluntary agencies. Those in the United States with temporary tourist visas, student visas, work visas and temporary resident cards are not eligible for disaster assistance. Under the presidential declaration, disas-

CPS students on track to set graduation record Compiled by EXTRA Newspaper Chicago Public Schools (CPS) CEO Barbara Byrd-Bennett and Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced on May 28 that CPS students are on track to set the highest high school graduation rate ever, with 63 percent of seniors projected to graduate in school year 2012-2013. “This graduation rate is a testament to our hard-working students, educators and administrators, but we know there is more to do. With a full school day, a full day of kindergarten, a rigorous curriculum tied to Common Core standards and increasing STEM and IB programs, and working with parents and our communities, we will keep this momentum going on behalf of every child in every neighborhood across the city,” said CEO Byrd-Bennett. This year’s projected 63 percent graduation rate builds on last year’s rate of 61 per-

cent, an increase from 58 percent in school year 2010-11 and up from 44 percent a decade ago. CEO Byrd-Bennett also announced improved attendance rates, with year-to-date attendance for all students projected at 92.9 percent, an increase of 0.4 percent from last year and 1.2 percent from the prior school year. Over the last two years alone, over 4,000 more children are attending school regularly. “While this news is very encouraging, we will continue working hand in hand with parents and school communities to remove barriers to attendance and create safe, positive learning environments for every child regardless of where they live,” added CEO ByrdBennett. Chicago Public Schools serves 403,000 students in 681 schools. It is the nation’s third-largest school district. n

Parents and students protest CPS closings Compiled by EXTRA Newspaper Dozens of families and their children spent their Memorial Day picnicking on the Millennium Park lawn to demonstrate solidarity with the thousands of Chicago Public Schools’ students who will be impacted by mass school closings. Participants hoped to draw attention to the School Closing Moratorium bills still stuck in committees in the Illinois Senate and House this week before the legislative session ends on Friday. One of the organizers of the event CPS parent, Cassie Creswell said: “The fight against school actions and the fight against underresourced, overcrowded public schools are one and the same. Instead of our children receiving the tools they need to thrive in school, they get excessive high-stakes standardized testing and schools without resources, while the city spends taxpayer money on hotels, high rises, and stadiums for private universities. All Chicagoans must stand together to demand support for the public schools of our city.” Janet Meegan, parent of a CPS student at Mitchell Elementary expressed concern about both her son’s school and other children’s schools. “There will be no schools in east Humboldt Park. Our school is already overcrowded,

but we know we will be receiving students from west of us. Every kid should have an opportunity to go to their own neighborhood school.” Letters and flowers from the event will urge Illinois legislators and Governor Quinn to support the passage of the School Closing Moratorium bills HB3283 and SB1571 before the end of the legislative session on May 31. Despite the objections of more than 30,000 people who spoke against school closings at public meetings and hearings held throughout the city since December of last year, the unelected CPS Board of Education voted nearly unanimously to close 50 schools, the largest school closing in US history, and to remove the entire staff or co-locate seventeen more. The research group Chicagoland Researchers and Educators for Transformative Education (CReATE) estimates the number of children affected at 40,000, including nearly 1 out of 4 African-American children. According to Raise Your Hand, a recent Freedom of Information Act request showed that, in making the decision to close schools, the BOE used no information about classrooms used for special education or other specialized programs and no information about grade-level enrollment at closing and receiving schools. n

Mazatlán’s rich culture Compiled by Fátima Olvera Dive into the second part of Mazatlán’s adventure in this week’s edition of ¡Vamonos! where we explore its historical parts, cuisine, activities and islands ¡Bon voyage!

Historic District Tour The Plazuela Machado Built in 1837 in the historic district known as Old Mazatlán, the Plazuela Machado is one of the oldest and most popular squares in Mazatlán. The Plazuela is vibrant and with a historical reach, a living extension of old world commerce, food and music in a modern setting. Plazuela Machado is also a favorite venue of Mazatlán’s annual Cultural Lollapalooza, a carnival where restaurant-goers and music-

lovers alike surrender their sense to the fourstar cuisine and distinctive musicality of the artistic renderings featured throughout the event. The Archaeological Museum The Archaeological Museum contains an exhibition of artifacts used by original villages of the state. These artifacts show the deep knowledge that their people had of making ceramics, as well as their funeral customs, which were decidedly different to other cultures of Mexico. The Mazatlán Art Museum The Mazatlan Art Museum contains the works of great Mexican artists, such as Rufino Tamayo, Francisco Toledo, Antonio Lopez Saenz, and Jose Luis Cuevas. The Angela Peralta Theater The Angela Peralta Theater stands adjacent to Plazuela Machado in Mazatlán’s historic district. The theater was built in 1874 and still retains its original Italian Romantic architectural design with a loge and three levels of balcony seating. n

Guerrero gets personal with ‘Mosquita y Mari’ by Kiko Martinez In the independent film “Mosquita y Mari,” filmmaker Aurora Guerrero tells the story of two young Latinas (Fenessa Pineda and Venecia Troncoso) and the relationship they develop during their high school years. The film, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival last year, will be available on DVD June 4. EXTRA: What was the inspiration behind a story like “Mosquita y Mari?” Why did you want to portray this relationship in the film? Aurora Guerrero: Originally, when I started writing this I didn’t know it was going to be my first feature. I was in film school and in

a class that was very loose in structure. We didn’t have to write screenplays. We just had to write from a place familiar to us in our lives. I started to write about my experiences with this young woman growing up. I found myself almost connected and obsessed with writing about this. It largely had to do with the fact that I had never talked about it. I had this suppressed major experience of falling in love the first time but I had never given it a proper place in my life until I started writing about it. Was writing the screenplay liberating for you? Yes, because I felt l was breaking this huge silence. I was already identifying as queer by the time I was in film school, but I had never

gone back and looked at where that started to happen in my life. It was through this friendship/first love that I really started to come into that identity without putting any labels to it. It was refreshing for me in many ways because I felt it was haunting me. I felt a lot of people would be able to identify with that feeling regardless of gender. What were you looking for when you started casting for the lead roles? I was looking for two young women who identify with the community and being Chicana, bilingual and bicultural and had a natural ability. Those were the elements I was looking for. I was adamant about it. I couldn’t compromise that. These two characters carry this film on their backs. Both Fenessa and Venecia came to me through a traditional casting call. When I brought them together they definitely had a really beautiful connection from the very beginning. I fell in love with them right away. n

Brian Urlacher retires from the NFL by Gabe Salgado On May 22, former linebacker Brian Urlacher announced his retirement from the National Football League (NFL) after he played for 13 seasons. Urlacher was drafted in the first round [ninth overall] in the 2000 NFL draft. The former strong safety from New Mexico was one of the lesser known players in the draft year. Once he was signed, the Bears moved Urlacher from strong safety to outside linebacker because of his combination of size and speed. It didn’t take long for him to adapt to the position. When former middle linebacker Barry Minter found himself on the injured list early into the season, Urlacher was moved to his position. He remained the starter at the position

for the rest of his career. Urlacher’s speed and athleticism was unheard of for any linebacker in the history of the game. He could stop the run, rush the passer, fight off blockers, he was solid in pass coverage, and he could play special teams when called upon. It didn’t take long for Urlacher to become the leader of the Bears defense. It’s also been said that the 260-pounder spent a considerable amount of time studying game film. Every defensive coordinator that Urlacher ever had in his career has said in one way or another that he understood his playbook as if it were sacred religious text. His play on the field proved those attributes on a weekly basis. His 1,353 career total tackles

puts him at the top of the Bears all-time list. He also finished his career with 41.5 sacks, 22 interceptions, three defensive touchdowns, 12 forced fumbles, and 91 pass deflections. As good as Urlacher was on the field, a long list of injuries would spell his demise: a string of neck and back injuries in 2004, a broken hand in 2009, a group of nagging injuries between 2010, and 2012 ended his time with the Bears. Urlacher was unable to work out a new deal with the franchise when his contract expired. When no other teams expressed interest in the 35-year-old, he took the hint and decided to hang up his helmet and pads for good. The Bears will move on as a team, but they will never be able to truly replace what Brian Urlacher brought to the table.n
