Aún no he tenido tiempo para hacerlo.

ven though the Wizard World Comic Con came to an end after taking place Aug. 22-24 at the Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont, the comics’ legacies continue to live on and develop through the creation of new characters. Some of these new characters are Hispanic or have Hispanic features, taking after the legacy of the legendary Hispanic Spider-Man Miles Morales from the ultimate Marvel continuity. “I don’t get to draw that many Hispanic characters but I tell you, one of my bestsellers remains to be Miles Morales. He is the most known Hispanic character out there and fans love him,” said Sean Iredale, one of the artists exhibiting at Wizard World Con. While one of the most famous Hispanic comic characters remains to hold the No. 1 spot among fans of the series, other char-
acters are beginning to emerge as well. One of them is the Puerto Rican ghost rider Ché Guevara created by a 31-year-old Puerto Rican Orlando-based artist, Peter Van Flores. Flores has been drawing comics for about 16 years. “Ché has a love-hate relationship with the world. Some people love him, some people hate him. He is a superhero, but he is misinterpreted because he got his superpowers from the devil. It’s a love-hate relationship with the ghost rider. He rides on a motorcycle and he has a skeleton on fire. Most Cubans can’t stand him and Caucasians don’t like him either but the Puerto Ricans, Argentians, Venezuelan Brazilians, and young Cubans appreciate him,” said Flores, whose character is a best-seller among minorities. Flores took part in the Wizard World Comic Convention among other Hispanic artists, illustrators and creators, such as Eddie Nuñez from San Diego, Calif. Nuñez is another Hispanic artist who has aspired to create Hispanic comic characters and series. He started his own sketchbook series
called Luchador, which features a beautiful Hispanic female called Adelita who has a chupacabra for a companion. “A lot of people want to write a story for her and ask me to do something with her. I haven’t had time to come up with anything yet. She is something that came out of the Mexican revolution,” said Nuñez about his character Adelita, created in 2008. Nuñez has been drawing comics professionally for six years. While Flores and Nuñez created their own Hispanic characters, others like Gabriel Bautista try to incorporate Hispanic features into their characters rather than the traditional Caucasian look. Bautista is a Mexican-American Chicago-based illustrator who has worked for DC Comics, Image Comics and Oni Press for about 10 years. “Every time I drew my character, I like to think he is Hispanic. I drew his nose not to be Americanized, but I haven’t had a chance to draw any Hispanic characters yet because people don’t think of that. The next character we do will definitely be Hispanic,” said Bautista, who believes that His-
panic artists are one of the hardest working artists he knows. “I know a lot of Hispanic artists and writers, and by the way we are raised they are all harder working. At some point, you realize it is not a game anymore. You have deadlines and if you don’t meet those deadlines, you lose your job and look bad. It’s a muscle and if you don’t work it out every day it will get weak.” His hard-working theory is shared by the Mexican female illustrator Yesica Jimenez from Milwaukee, who believes that the Hispanic female artists have to work even harder to make it in the industry. Her way of making it is by incorporating Day of the Dead elements into her sketches. “I like to recreate the Disney princesses. I like to apply the Day of the Dead element because my family lives in the U.S. and I try to incorporate it. It’s difficult enough for women in general in this area. It’s even harder for minorities, Hispanic minorities,” said Jimenez, who remembers drawing since she was young. Whatever the Hispanic character or element may be, the Hispanic artists are trying to make a change and bring the ethnic element into life. What they have in common is that they are not giving up, despite the challenges, and are making a living of what they love doing. “I was discussing with my brother that Mexicans can’t get enough of being terrified. I always thought I had to draw a superhero to make it, but to get to draw a horror/vampire story is a dream come true,” said Dave Acosta from Detroit, who has been drawing horror characters for about five years. “I think it’s a cultural thing.”n

Quinn vetos two bills aimed at regulating ride-share services by Alex V. Hernandez Gov. Pat Quinn shot down two bills that would put off statewide regulations on Chicago’s emerging ride-share industry on Aug. 25. “The principle of home rule is an important one,” said Quinn in a news release. “I am vetoing this legislation because it would have mandated a one-size-fits-all approach to a service that is best regulated at the local level.” Customers using ride-share services like Lyft and Uber arrange and pay for rides from drivers, who use their personal cars via a smart phone app. The wording in House Bill 4075 would have set statewide standards for vehicle safety, which included requirements for insurance coverage and rules that would have made the dispatchers of the vehicles liable for damages in accidents while the drivers are using their personal cars for ride sharing. The bill would have also forced ride-sharing drivers to get a chauffeur’s license, if offered, from
the local municipality where their vehicles are registered or operated. Finally, the state bill would have prohibited ride-share drivers from picking up or dropping off passengers at any airport that serves as a base for commercial flights open to the general public, to any convention center, or to any designated taxicab stands, queues, or loading zones. The other measure Quinn vetoed, House Bill 5331, had similar ride-share regulation language. As EXTRA previously reported, the Chicago City Council passed its own ride-share rules back in June. The Chicago regulations, which went into effect Aug. 26, require drivers to obtain chauffeur’s licenses if working for companies with a driver workforce averaging over 20 hours per person each week. It also gives the city authority to cap “surge pricing” during rush hour and other peak demand periods. Companies must also carry insurance, perform regular inspections of their driver’s ve-
hicles and perform driver background checks. Ride-share companies would also need to get $1 million in commercial auto liability coverage. Taxi companies and City Council members like Ald. Anthony Beale both felt that Chicago’s regulations didn’t go far enough to protect the traditional cab companies losing business to the new tech savvy ride-share companies. Chicago cab owners and taxi drivers protested outside the State of Illinois building in the Loop chanting, “Same rules! Same job!” on Monday in an effort to get Quinn to sign HB4075. Meanwhile, Uber began circulating a petition asking Quinn to veto House Bill 4075 last Thursday. Uber’s petition reads, the “bill…will hurt consumers and limit transportation options across the state. The bill protects taxi special interests working to stifle competition and protect their monopoly.” At press time, the petition had 86,150 signatures. “The whole point of using Uber…is to get fast convenient door-to-door service from
wherever the customer is at,” said Alfredo Vargas, who’s been a driver for a little over a month. He’s is still serving in the military and said he joined Uber in order to take advantage of the veteran program, which doesn’t take a commission from his weekly pay, to make extra vacation cash for himself. “Most of the time, I’m picking people up from places where there is no taxi available or where getting a taxi is difficult,” he said. He said one of the most frequent comments he gets from customers, especially downtown, is that his ride-service picks up people who keep getting passed up by traditional taxis. “Once again, [these bills are] just a tactic by the taxi companies to try and keep control of the market,” said Vargas. State Rep. Mike Zalewski (D-Riverside) was the House sponsor of the two ride-share bills. He said he was disappointed with Quinn’s vetoes because they were designed to put consumer safety first and provide a fair marketplace for ride-share services. n

Quilts tell stories of sexual violence by Fabiola Barral On Aug. 19, the Monument Quilt, a national project featuring the stories of survivors of sexual violence, was on display at Daley Plaza. Mujeres clients have added squares to thousands of others to make up a quilt with stories and messages about healing. Rape Victim Advocates and Mujeres Latinas teamed up to bring the Monument Quilt display to Chicago. Monument Quilt is a display on tour created by FORCE, an organization whose mantra is “upsetting rape culture.” The Monument Quilt is meant as a public healing space, one where an individual’s story can be stitched alongside another’s to remind victims that they are not alone. “We felt like it was necessary for clients to be creative, to give a different medium for survivors to be able to express themselves,” explained Lubia Nunez-Montelongo, a repre-
sentative of Mujeres Latinas. Mujeres Latinas created their very own quilt square and sewed it within the larger quilt to leave their own mark of compassion and understanding. “We recognize that not everyone will be ready to tell their story. There are other ways survivors should be able to heal,” said Nunez-Montelongo. “What I love about the monument is that it is gathered from so many different places; it represents a diverse range of experiences. It goes beyond the mainstream narrative of sexual assault, because the reality of sexual assault is much broader and deeper than that,” said Sharmili Majmudar, executive director of Rape Victim Advocates. The Quilt Monument is headed east, passing through various cities before hitting its destination in Washington D.C. Here, the quilts will be displayed against the national wall in solidarity with victims of sexual assault. n

Leveling the playing field by Angela Caputo, Chicago Reporter More than 30 years ago, the federal government sued the Chicago Park District for showering money on parks in predominantly white areas while shortchanging ones in mostly African-American and Latino communities. Today, the area that has more money often determines who gets park upgrades. Gentrifying neighborhoods such as Wicker Park, Logan Square and Lincoln Square, growing hipster havens and areas where Latino families have been rapidly priced out, are among those that have received the bulk of the spending. At the same time, growing working-class Latino communities like Belmont Cragin, Chicago Lawn and Gage Park have become parks poor. The calculation is based on the number of children who live in a neighborhood and whether they, and their families, can walk to a park, garden or open space within 10 minutes. Some of the city’s densest neighborhoods have the least amount of open space. “We talk really seriously about the desire to have a 10-minute walk to open space. We’re
dedicated to that,” says Rob Rejman, the Chicago Park District’s director of planning. Rejman says district officials know that there are neighborhoods disproportionately affected by the shortage. The challenge, he says, is: “In these truly parks-poor areas, there is no way for me to spend money because there are no parks. What do I need to do to spend more money there?” he adds. “I need to acquire more parks.” Acquisition takes long-range planning, which he says is driven by geography and density-not race. Communities with fewer parks and field houses tend to receive less for programs and facilities. That’s particularly true in Latino wards, which have one-third fewer parks with tennis courts, baseball diamonds, dog parks and playgrounds as white ones. City officials have taken steps to close the gap. Over the past three years, $19 million was channeled into acquiring new park land in Little Village, for example, which removed the neighborhood from The Trust for Public Land’s parks-poor list. This is the second part of the Chicago Reporter’s story, originally published on July 29, 2014. Read the rest of the story in the next few editions of EXTRA. n

Óscar Jaenada transforms into Cantinflas and says Mexico runs in his veins now by Nikoleta Morales “Cantinflas” is the untold story of Mexico’s greatest and most beloved comedy film star of all time, Mario Moreno, who became famous around the world one joke at a time. The movie comes out on Aug. 29. Óscar Jaenada (“Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides”) plays Cantinflas/Moreno, and EXTRA talked to him about his aspirations and playing this controversial character. EXTRA: What was your reaction when you found out you would play this huge legend? Óscar Jaenada: It was a big surprise because it is huge for all Spanish speakers, not only for Mexicans. I had to work a lot because there were two characters in the same role – Cantinflas on one side and Mario Moreno on the other, and they were truly different. Cantinflas was a pure imitation. character and he was bigger than him and maybe he wanted that. I had to reach his personal circle—social and political people. I had a lot of questions, uncomfortable questions. What did you learn about Cantinflas and Mario Moreno after you did the role? The weight of a character. When you give your life to the people, you are not in your home. He had a tough personal life and that was because he gave all of his life to the people. That’s a sacrifice. Do you see yourself doing what he did in your acting career? I have been doing movies for more than 20 years. Success is complicated. I’d rather be respectful than successful. I used to make movies not for success, but to be a respectable actor. Maybe I learned from Mario Moreno that being successful is not always the best way to live. What can you tell us about the relationship between Mario Moreno and Charlie Chaplin?
character and wanted to remove Cantinflas from his life, Charlie Chaplin told him that he is the best comedian in the world. It must be really weird for an actor to be a part of such a moment in your life. What about the relationship between Moreno and his [Russian] wife [Valentina Ivanova]? I was talking a lot with the actress who plays Valentina, about what they talk about in their home. We thought she knew everything about him and his infidelities and understood him. He did everything for her, I think, but not as good because the huge character he played consumed him. Why do you think such a controversial character like Cantinflas made it so big on the international scene? He was able to be with the richest and the poorest guys. He was able to be like them always. How did you feel about filming in Mexico being that you are originally from Spain? The first time I was there was for the audition. Mario Moreno always said that Cantinflas is Mexico. It was truly important for me to be in Mexico and to breathe his air. Now I think part of my blood is Mexican. What do you like best about Mexico? The cinema! I love the Mexican cinema. n

I look forward to the UFC going to Mexico in November,” said Ferguson. “This fight will come down to experience. I have 19 fights with the WEC/UFC and I’ve fought the likes of Anthony Pettis (current UFC Lightweight Champion), Ricardo Lamas, and other top fighters in the division,” said Castillo. “I’m like a Supra with a V6 and turbocharged.
