CPS students will experience 49th Chicago International Film Festival Compiled by EXTRA Newspaper Cinema/Chicago’s Education Outreach Screening Program will screen a number of festival films during the 49th Chicago International Film Festival, providing eight complimentary screenings to Chicago Public School (CPS) students during the festival beginning at 10 a.m., Oct. 11-23, as part of its year-round Education Outreach Program. “Our Education Outreach Screenings Program during this year’s festival is outstanding,” said Rebecca Fons, education program manager at Cinema/Chicago. “The films we’ve selected for CPS students present stories from as far away as Africa and as nearby as the suburbs of Chicago. They present students with a variety of stories, languages and cultures and give them access to films they would not otherwise be able to see.”

This year’s Outreach Screening highlights include these documentaries: “Tough Bond,” which provides an intimate look at the lives of four street children in Kenya who huff glue to numb themselves to hunger while surviving on scraps; and “Alice Walker: Beauty In Truth,” which tells the extraordinary story of one of America’s greatest living writers, from her childhood in a family of Georgia sharecroppers to a distinguished career as an activist and author. The Chicago-made feature narrative “The Girls On Liberty Street” follows teenager Brianna during her last week at home before she leaves for the Army, creating a portrait of a young woman in transition. The feature ﬁlm “Wolfschildren,” a remarkable story inspired by true events, follows 14-year-old Hans and his younger brother Fritz, orphaned after WWII, on the long and difﬁcult journey to Lithuania

where family friends might take them in. Discussions with students will be conducted after each screening with visiting filmmakers (including “Tough Bond” directors Austin Peck and Anneliese Vandenberg, “The Girls on Liberty Street” director John Rangel and select cast members, and “Wolfschildren” director Rick Ostermann) and moderated by local film critics and arts-community leader. During the 2013-2014 school year, more than 7,000 (up from 5,000 in 2012) CPS students and teachers will participate in Cinema/ Chicago’s Education Outreach Program. Prior to all Cinema/Chicago Education Outreach Screenings, study guides are provided to prepare educators and students for the content and themes of each film, ensuring that the discussion can take place long after the students have left the theater. The D.E.Y. Learning Center afterschool program will sponsor a Lights On Afterschool rally on Oct. 17 at 3 p.m. at Senn High School, 5900 N. Glenwood in Chicago. Alderman Osterman will call for expanding afterschool opportunities so that every child who needs a program has access to one, and discuss the harm that results from budget cuts and freezes to these programs. At the event, parents and supporters will sign a new petition that urges lawmakers not to deny or divert funding for afterschool programs. Participants in the Lights On Afterschool rally include 48th Ward Alderman Harry Osterman, school administrators and teachers. Arnold Schwarzenegger is Founding Chair of Lights On Afterschool, a position he has held since 2001. Q

Earlier this month, Gov. Pat Quinn, Chicago rapper “Common” and Earvin “Magic” Johnson joined together to help get Illinois at-risk students back on track by creating the movement “Friends of Magic.” It aims to bring together networks of individuals, foundations and companies whose mission is to provide students who are at risk or have dropped out the resources and assistance they need to not only graduate high school, but the opportunity to build their future through educational resources, internships and real-world experiences. “It means a lot to have someone like Magic Johnson make this important investment in the students of Illinois,” said Gov. Quinn. “We must remember that it is everyone’s responsibility to help students who are struggling by keeping them in school or on the road to recovery. I thank Magic for bringing attention to this cause, especially as someone who, either on the court or in the classroom, can accomplish great things.”

The event will highlight three of the signiﬁcant contributions that afterschool programs make to Chicago: keeping youth safe and healthy, inspiring them to learn, and relieving working parents of worries about their children’s activities during the afternoon hours. La Asociación de Dueños/Operadores Hispanos de McDonald’s otorga becas Compilado por Periódico EXTRA Durante la Cena de Premiación que tomó lugar esta semana en el local de la Puerto Rican Arts Alliance en Chicago, la Asociación de Dueños/Operadores Hispanos de McDonald’s (MHOA) otorgó 10 becas de $3,000 cada una a estudiantes latinos que comenzarán sus estudios universitarios. Estos estudiantes fueron seleccionados entre los solicitantes a las becas RMHC® debido a que demostraron su pasión por la educación evidente en sus logros académicos y un sincero deseo de ayudar a sus comunidades. La MHOA recaudó estos fondos en respuesta a su compromiso de aumentar el número de becas otorgadas a estudiantes hispanos camino a la universidad que hubieran solicitado becas del programa RMHC® HACER. A pesar de que el número de hispanos matriculados en universidades ha aumentado, todavía se encuentra a un nivel inaceptable. Más alarmante aún es el nivel de retención y graduación. En muchos casos, la falta de recursos ﬁnancieros es la causa principal. Muchas familias hispanas no tienen acceso a los recursos necesarios para enviar a sus hijos a la universidad, y MHOA quiere mejorar esa situación y así tener un impacto signiﬁcativo en el futuro. Fue obvio que los estudiantes lo estaban escuchando atentamente ya que aún antes de que se cerrara el evento ya estaban poniendo en práctica sus consejos de cómo

entablar y mantener relaciones con aquellos que pueden ayudarnos a triunfar. McDonald’s Hispanic Owner-Operators Association awarded college scholarships Compiled by EXTRA Newspaper The McDonald’s Hispanic Owner-Operators Association (MHOA) awarded ten $3,000 college scholarships to Latino students. These students were selected from applicants to the RMHC® scholarships because they demonstrated a passion for education evidenced by their academic achievements and a sincere desire to help their communities. The MHOA raised these funds in response to their commitment to increase the number of scholarships awarded to college bound Hispanic students from the RMHC® HACER scholarship program. Although college enrollment among Hispanics has increased, it is still at an unacceptable level. Lower retention and graduation rates are even more alarming. In many cases, the cause

is lack of financial resources. Many Hispanic families don’t have access to the resources necessary to send their children to college and the MHOA is intent on improving this situation and having a significant impact on their future. Carmen Solano-De Carrier, chair of the MHOA Education Committee greeted and congratulated the awardees and their families, summarizing the reasons why these students had been chosen. John De Carrier, president of MHOA had the keynote remarks in which he challenged the students to be the best they could be, to persevere in their studies, find good mentors, never to take for granted the opportunities they are given and always to pay it forward. He recounted his own struggles to make it to where he is today and offered valuable advice on how to maximize their years in college. The students

were listening because even before the event was over they were already putting to practice his networking tips. Juan Mendez, member of the MHOA and chair of the Puerto Rican Arts Alliance echoed Mr. De Carrier’s words and further encouraged the students to become role models for their peers, as well as to always remember that their endeavors have to be rooted in their efforts to be a part of their communities’ growth. EXTRA: ¿Por qué se escogió al Colegio Morton para esta concesión? Dana Grove: Antes que nada, no ha habido construcción en este campus desde que fue ediﬁcado. En 35 o 40 años no habido construcción externa aquí. Además, uno puede ver que en todo colegio del Estado de Illinois ha habido nueva construcción. Así que súmelo, necesitamos nuevo subsidio para un nuevo ediﬁcio. Creo también que a causa de nuestra creciente población, requerimos los salones y llamamos la atención de legisladores. ¿Debió haber pasado el Colegio Morton por un proceso para obtener la concesión? El Colegio Morton debió acercarse a Springfield y convencer a legisladores detrás del Colegio Morton, abrir camino y hablar de las necesidades del Colegio Morton. ¿Cuáles son los planes del Colegio Morton para esta inversión? El dinero de la concesión se destinó a una nueva edificación para aliviar nuestra creciente inscripción y dar a nuestros alumnos la mejor nueva tecnología. Este edificio será agregado al Edificio C. No hemos decidido exactamente qué programas hemos planeado para el nuevo edificio. ¿Hay un tiempo límite para concluir el nuevo edificio? Aún no sabemos con exactitud. Dr. Grove talks Morton College future and State Grant by Brian Schiller Earlier this month, Gov. Quinn visited Morton College to announce Illinois’ investment of $4.5 million to Morton College. EXTRA got the chance to sit down with Dana Grove, president of Morton College, to discuss the plans for this investment and why Morton College was chosen. EXTRA: Why was Morton College chosen for this grant? Dana Grove: First of all, there has been no construction on this campus since the campus was built. You have about 35-40 years here where there has been no new external construction. Plus, you can look around the state and every college in the state of Illinois has had new construction. So to sum up, we were due for new funding for our new building. I also think because of our growing popu-

lation, we needed the classrooms and got the legislators’ attention. Was there a process Morton College had to go through to obtain this grant? This actually came out of the governor’s Jobs Now program. There is a process called the “Ramp,” where schools apply for funding and projects and once those projects get funded, they fall off the ramp. But there is usually a ﬁve year or so wait. This project was separate from the ramp. Morton College did have to approach Springﬁeld and get legislators behind Morton College and basically pound the pavement and talk about the needs of Morton College. What are Morton College’s plans for this investment? The grant money earmarked for a new building to alleviate our growing enrollment and give our students the best new technol-

ogy. This building will be added on to Building C. We haven’t decided exactly what programs we have planned for the new building. Is there a timetable for the completion of the new building? We don’t know exactly yet. We are going to peruse a pretty aggressive timetable but we are hoping to break ground by next summer and have it up for use by fall 2015. Knowing that one of your goals was to change the negative mindset of the junior college, have you been able to begin working on that? We have been in discussion with the superintendent and principals from the local high schools and communicating regularly to share differences and to work together to help students see Morton College in a more positive light. Rev. Michael Pfleger, co-pastor of Saint Sabina parish and social activist, will consider if and how nonviolence remains a strategy for social change on Oct. 9 at Saint Xavier University. “Is Nonviolence Still a Value?” is scheduled from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in McGuire Hall, located in the Warde Academic Center at SXU’s Chicago campus, 3700 W. 103rd St. Rev. Pfleger’s lecture will offer his reflections on the title questions “What does the philosophy and practice of nonviolence bring to current situations of injustice and violence, domestically and internationally? Is nonviolence as a strategy for personal and social change still powerful or merely a memory of times past?”. Since 1968, Rev. Pfleger has lived and ministered in the African-American community on both the West and South Sides

of Chicago. In 1981, at the age of 31, he became the youngest full-time pastor in the diocese when he was appointed Pastor of Saint Sabina Church. In the course of his extensive and active ministry, much of Rev. Pﬂeger’s work has focused on his commitment to equality and passionate stance against injustice.
