his November marks the season of high school and college open houses throughout the Chicagoland area. This is a very important time for all students to get out and see what school is right for them. If you are entering high school next year, here are a few things to keep in mind when you decide to visit an open house. First, find schools that excel in the programs that are important to you. Talk to other prospective students and ask why they are interested in going there. Get to know them. You may even make a new friend, which could make your first day of school more comfortable. If you’re going to college, you are probably beginning to narrow your search down to the college institution you plan to attend. Open houses are almost mandatory to attend

to give you a better understanding of the environment and campus opportunities. If you plan to live on campus, you have to keep campus safety in the back of your mind. When you arrive at an open house, you will want to start asking questions about academics, the campus environment and student experiences. If you meet professors in your intended major, try and talk to them and ask them questions to learn more about what to expect. Also, look for current students and ask them what their experience has been like. Open houses can be intimidating but the goal is for you to get to know the environment, faculty, students and future peers. Use these opportunities and always ask questions. This will make your education more enjoyable and give you a far better learning experience. The following are a list of open houses throughout Chicago at both the high school and college level:

‘Iluminando la Comunidad’ series brought to you by ComEd by Nikoleta Morales El Valor was founded in 1973 by Guadalupe Reyes. A mother of a special needs son, she wanted to create a community and a learning place where people like her son could live, learn and work. Now El Valor Courtesy photo of El Valor has grown into a multicultural organization that touches and changes the lives of thousands. “We help families navigate education and adult life. We help them be the best they can be,” said Maria Esther Lopez, director for institutional advancement and Latino leadership connections. El Valor’s mission is to support and challenge urban families to achieve excellence and participate fully in the community. Its programs enrich and empower people with disabilities, the disenfranchised and the underserved. El Valor was nominated by Gov. Pat Quinn as a National Center for Excellence and is the second largest provider of early childhood education programs in Chicago after the Chicago Public Schools. Through El Valor, 3,000 families throughout the Chicagoland area annually receive high-quality early childhood education services, 1,000 people
with disabilities learn how to live more independently, 350 youth receive individualized academic support and 150 working adults from traditionally marginalized communities are receiving master’s and doctoral degrees. “Far more than other preschool children with whom I have worked for the past 25 years, these children seem to construct understanding of relationships they have formed with their teachers, with their peers and the playful explorations that are encouraged in every classroom,” shared Christine Marmé Thompson, Ph.D., Penn State University. El Valor has a Children & Family Center, Technology Center and a Vocational Development Center in Pilsen, a Children & Family Center in South Chicago and Little Village and six Community Residence Homes for adults with disabilities throughout Chicagoland. “Partnerships are what have been sustaining us. If we can’t survive fiscally, we will be deserving the community. We owe it to the community to be here in the long run,” said Lopez. For more information, visit: www.elvalor. org, or call 773-252-2700 and 312-666-4511. Similar to El Valor’s commitment to the Latino community, ComEd is committed to enhancing the quality of service for customers.
