Police issue burglary alert for Humboldt Park by Alex V. Hernandez managing editor After two Humboldt Park businesses were broken into this month, police issued a burglary alert to area business owners. The two reported incidents happened in the 2500 block of West Chicago Avenue and in the 2400 block of West Division Street last Tuesday. In both incidents, police said an offender used a rock or brick to break the front glass of businesses to gain entry and take property during the early morning hours. A similar incident in the 3900 block of North Avenue also occurred the last week of

October, but was not reported to police because the brick used didn’t shatter the front glass of the business and nothing was stolen. Police are advising business owners to keep the perimeter of their property well lit, report suspicious activity immediately, keep doors and windows secured and immediately repair any broken windows, doors or locks. If a break-in does occur, police say not to touch anything and call police immediately. Moreover, if video surveillance is available, save it and make a copy of the incident. Police are asking anyone with information to contact Area Central detectives at 312-7478382. n

Landaverde. n

ince August, Beatriz Santiago Ramirez and her two children have been sheltered in a church. She’s been fighting a deportation order against her, which was finally suspended on Oct 27. However, she still has a long road ahead in order to remain in the country with hopes for a better a future. “I feel good, relieved not to fear anything. Previously, if I cried it was because I was sad, and this time it was of joy,” said Ramirez after news that her deportation was suspended. The undocumented mother, 32, an expatriate of Veracruz, Mexico as of 11 years ago, sought refuge with her two children, both U.S. citizens ages nine months and 3-years-old, after being notified of an impending deportation. The three found shelter at the Mission of Our Lady of Guadalupe in the Little Village neigh-

borhood, where they have lived since Aug. 12. “When an immigrant is desperate and struggling to stay here with his family and facing a desperate situation, I feel an obligation to help out,” said Rev. José S. Landaverde, founder of the church and an activist and advocate for immigrants. “The hardest thing was not to know when this was going to be fixed,” says Ramirez, who in 2009 suffered from sexual abuse and cooperated with authorities to determine the whereabouts of the culprit. The deportation of Ramirez was ordered in February 2010. At the time, she already had a pending application for a U, or humanitarian visa, for being a victim of a rape. But she was denied because of a technical failure of the Madison County prosecutor. Furthermore, she claims that she never received a notice to appear in court. Her lawyer defends her stance. “Beatriz was the victim of a terrible crime. She is a candidate for a U visa,” said her lawyer,

Juan Soliz. “The basis for reopening the case was that she did not receive adequate notice. In addition, the judge found that there was a pending application for a U visa as a victim of a crime of sexual abuse.” It was not until Nov. 1, that Ramirez and her children left the church for the first time after receiving the news that The Executive Office for Immigration Review decided to re-open her case and withdraw the deportation order. “This case has been a victory. It sets a national precedent that we can win the other cases that are declared in sanctuaries. In the church, we have an obligation to declare it as a sanctuary, “explains Landaverde. He, like many clerics nationwide, open their doors to all in an action known as the Sanctuary Movement, which is a network of churches and organizations that house undocumented immigrants facing deportation. For now, Ramirez will remain in the church with her children, with continued external support from the children’s father who provides them with food and helps with cleaning clothes. The first achievement was to cease the deportation case. The next step depends on the outcome of the current petition by her lawyer. If she is granted a U visa, she can get a work permit and temporary residence to stay with her family. “Going out to look for a job, that’s the first thing,” said Ramirez regarding the possible approval of a U visa. Ramirez will attend court on Jan. 13, 2015, coinciding with the first birthday of her daughter. “It has felt eternal because for four years they have been telling me that they are helping me. But now that I changed lawyers, [Soliz] I have more hope,” she concluded.

Hope for immigration reform Figures from the Pew Hispanic Center indicate that currently there are about 12 million undocumented immigrants in the country. The Migration Policy Institute reports that in 2012, 419,384 people were deported, coinciding with the figures provided by the Department of Homeland Security. It is not known exactly how many people are in deportation proceedings, but it is well known that the mass deportations and family separations are a constant in the United States. With the recent event that swept the nation—the Republicans taking control of Congress during the Nov. 4 midterm elections—it is unclear what will become of the immigration reform supported by a majority of Democrats. “Before the end of the year, we’re going to take whatever lawful actions that I can take, that I believe will improve the functioning of our immigration system,” said President Barack Obama the day after the midterms. While he says he’ll resort to an executive action to pass reform if congress doesn’t act, the president has also said he would prefer Republicans work with his party towards reform. “You send me a bill that I can sign, and those executive actions go away,” said Obama. Republican leaders like House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) have called the president’s implied threat of executive action “executive amnesty” and Sen. Mitch McConnell (R., Ky.), said Obama’s threat was akin to “waving a red flag in front of a bull.” “I hope that the community will enter into dialogue with the Republicans and it will result in a moratorium on deportations,” said Landaverde. n

After four years of service, he had orders to go to California to work on helicopters. But something just clicked inside him. “I just wanted to come back home and go back to school. I felt that being in the Marines wasn’t something that I’d be able to enjoy anymore,” he said. After getting his honorable discharge, Jose received his associate’s degree and is now

attending Quincy University to get his bachelor’s degree in education. He’s currently student teaching at Farragut High School, which he attended himself. Jose also found out about the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA) through another Marine in California on social media. An opportunity came up to host “VetTogethers,” events for veterans from all eras just to rebuild that bond of brotherhood they once had while serving. Campos is now married with a daughter, but he still continues to serve. “There’s a sense of negativity when talking about Little Village, whether it’s gangs or violence. I never got into that, but a lot of young men here fall into that. Being in the military helped me look away from all of that and come back...to become a role model for the young men here.” n

The Belmont-Cragin United community organization hosted Ald. Bob Fioretti Monday night. Held at the Chicago Public Library’s Portage-Cragin Branch, 5108 W. Belmont Ave., the meeting was aimed at letting residents ask the mayoral candidate questions. There were two fatal shootings in Belmont Cragin over weekend. Because of this, Fioretti discussed his plans to address the city’s vio-

lent crime if elected. “Police officers are not the only way to deal with it,” said Fioretti. “We need to deal with [crime] holistically.” To this end the alderman proposes doubling down on job programs for residents in low-income neighborhoods and reopening six of Chicago’s 12 mental health clinics that were closed in 2012. “Crime is a major issue in all our communities all over the city...How do you solve those problems? You put people to work,” said Fio-

retti. “People want to work.” Regarding employment, Deborah Robinson was concerned with Fioretti’s desire to raise the city’s minimum wage by 2018. The alderman is one of 21 Chicago City Council members co-sponsoring an ordinance to raise it to $15 an hour. Robinson was worried the increased income revenue would end up benefiting suburbs people commute from to work in the city and not Chicago itself. Fioretti plans to make sure the higher minimum wage revenue is reinvested in Chicago communities via a 1 percent commuter tax on the over 600,000 people who live in the suburbs and work in Chicago. He said it would not only guarantee the money stays in Chicago but would add incentive for workers to relocate to the city. The alderman expects this tax

to generate about $350 million. The alderman also wants to create a financial transaction tax and to change the city’s 5 percent flat tax of a person’s net income into a graduated tax on net income. The change would mean people with less money would pay lower rates while people with more money would pay higher rates. Fioretti also criticized Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s focus on generating tax revenue via red light and speeding cameras across the city instead of using accident data to increase the safety of those streets for residents using things like speed humps. “It’s nickeling and diming our citizens to bear the brunt of our budget,” said Fioretti. “We’ve got to find more...dedicated streams of income to come into the city.” n

The legalization of marijuana has become a hot button issue in the U.S. lately. With California and Colorado recently legalizing the selling of the substance, residents of Chicago are wondering if this will happen in the city. That discussion has becoming heated as there is a proposal to open a medical marijuana dispensary in Jefferson Park. A community meeting was held at the Congressional Church of Jefferson Park on Nov. 3 about a medical marijuana dispensary that would be set up at 4758 N. Milwaukee Ave. The dispensary would be operated by Curative Health, which is owned by Columbia Care. Curative also operates several other dispensaries located in Arizona, Massachusetts and Washington, D.C. Nicholas Vita, chief executive officer of Curative Health, was on hand at the meeting along with Ward 45 Ald. John Arena. Several residents attended the meeting as they had

concerns about this particular store coming into town. While some residents were worried about the level of security the facility will have and if property values would go down, much of the concerns were geared toward the threat of unsavory people committing crimes in the neighborhood. Vita assured the residents that there would be no threat coming to the neighborhood, as those who would purchase from the dispensary would need a state sanctioned license in order to do so. Interestingly, Curative Health purchased the vacant property without a special-use permit from the city or a license from the state to open a dispensary. The feeling in the room was contentious on Nov. 3 as many residents just did not believe the dispensary was a good fit. Arena reassured the crowd that no decision has been made yet about Curative Health and he does not want to move forward with the decision until he gets a favorable vote from the community. n

“El Miguelon” and “El Bombon” embark on new territory by Amelia Orozco In this digital age, it’s good to know that radio is still alive. That’s even more spot-on for some Latino residents in the western part of Illinois like Peru, LaSalle and Mendota. Until recently, only a limited amount of signal carried Spanish broadcasting to the area. That’s until two radio visionaries with a strong Chicago following picked up and moved there to take on the challenge. “El Miguelon” and “El Bombon,” as they are known, are now managing a radio station in Mendota, Ill., “El Rey” on 102.9 FM. The duo took a breather from their activities to speak to EXTRA about their move, the station, and their plans for the future. EXTRA: You two were on the “Arriba Chicago” morning show in Chicago’s “La Que Buena” station, what happened? El Rey: From one day to the next, our show was terminated because of changes in the station, and after weeks of waiting for a decision, we decided we could not wait anymore.

You started to have a strong following in Chicago. What was your next move? We know that in our line of work, time is important and unfortunately, people may forget about you. We thought about continuing to do our show, syndicating it, and offering it around the country to different stations. But then we got an offer to come and take over this station. Did you two move out to Mendota? Yes, we moved in September, just a few days after accepting the offer, and we started working around the clock to create a new image for the station. We had a big kick-off with free tacos and giveaways. We also just held a fundraiser for a local family who was in need of medical care for one of their children and raised over $3,000. What is the community’s reaction to you? People here needed something like this. The station that was here before played music and news from other states. It feels good for people to tell you they like it. We are like celebrities because some of them had heard of us already. From day one, people

How has this move changed you? It’s been one of those rides where you realize how much your life has changed in a matter of months. This place is family-oriented. People go to church with their families. In Chicago, we were on the go—eating and getting dressed at the same time. Here, people have invited us to have dinner with their family. This place makes you remember your family. What are your plans for the station? Before, the station didn’t have enough power to reach listeners in Aurora, and we have fixed that. We can now be heard there too, so we plan on going out there to promote. We are doing everything, from sales and promotions to creating new programs. We have plans to do more events, bring in major artists, and work with the high school to put on different events for the families.

When a new sci-fi film rolls around, film critics tend to compare it to Stanley Kubrick’s 1968 opus “2001: A Space Odyssey.” Kubrick’s film is a high benchmark to reach for any film, let alone a sci-fi one. So it’s a bit lofty to try to measure Christopher Nolan’s latest picture “Interstellar” next to Kubrick’s film. Nolan, known for his work on “The Dark Knight” and “Inception,” tries to create a picture that blends the smarts of a real world space adventure and the sensibilities of a popcorn action flick, but the film feels a bit hollow in some areas and forces its themes a bit too hard on the audience. In an odd, distant future where everything looks eerily similar to 2014, the Earth is on its last legs with crops dying around the clock and humanity losing precious resources. A last ditch effort is staged as engineer Cooper (Matthew McConaughey) is chosen to pilot a space craft into a wormhole that will lead to other galaxies and hopefully a new planet that will sustain life. Nolan has never been shy in trying to inject new ideas into standard film genres. Where some directors are just fine with loud explosions, Nolan tries to do something different with the medium. This is commendable, but there are some mo-

ments in the film that feel a bit forced. Cooper’s relationship with his daughter feels like a cheap ploy for sentimentality and a lot of the dialogue is ham-fisted to get the audience to dream just as Nolan does. But I’d rather take an ambitious film than one that plays it safe. “Interstellar” has some amazing visuals and I recommend heading down to the local IMAX to check it out. It’ll leave you mesmerized by the promise of what’s out there. And the actors give commendable performances with some over-the-top dialogue regarding the science about black holes and wormholes. They leave you interested without sounding boring or talking down to you. “Interstellar” is at times a messy, overly-sentimental picture, but it’s still a wonder to experience in theaters. n

Bears: “EmBEARassment” is an understatement by Michael Bacos Sunday’s 55-14 drubbing of the Bears by the Green Bay Packers allowed NBC announcer Cris Collinsworth and the NBC camera crew to really call out the Bears’ lousy performance. First, when asked about whether Chicago’s offense or defense should be blamed, Collinsworth just replied, “Yes.” Then, the camera panned to show Aaron Rodgers and the rest of the Packers acting outright giddy on the sidelines. The first sign of disrespect from Collinsworth came during the first Packer drive, when the Bears stopped Eddie Lacy short of the end zone during a third and goal situation. The Packers, clearly counting on how lousy the Bears defense is, decided to punch through it anyways because there’s very

little risk even if the Bears did make a goal line stand. And in Aaron Rodgers fashion, he nailed the one-yard pass to Brandon Bostick for an easy six. The Bears’ defense continues to display its ineptitude by allowing three 20-plus-yard passes from Rodgers, including a 40-yard touchdown by Jordy Nelson. The Bears’ defense left Nelson wide open—twice. The defense must have just given up on covering Nelson, as Tim Jennings just blatantly wrapped him up because Nelson had burned him on that route. After the game, fans and teammates were left trying to figure out just what is going on with the Bears. The team better figure it out before going back to Soldier Field to face the Vikings to battle for last place in the NFC North. n

Fighter profile: Israel “Izzy” Garcia by Michael Bacos Israel Garcia always had the passion of a fighter. When he was young, his family didn’t have enough money to send him to a boxing gym, so he created his own backyard gym and used water jugs as weights. Eventually, he did find a trainer and worked with him to make it all the way to the semifinals of the Chicago Golden Gloves and racked up about 60 amateur fights. However, his dream of going pro was cut short due to a car accident. But instead of giving up and bailing out of the sport forever, “Izzy,” as he is known by his friends, decided to put that passion into training others.

“Instead of trying to chase the dream of becoming a champion of the world, I was given the opportunity to be a champion for the world,” Izzy explained. In 2008, he created a boxing club at Northeastern Illinois University. Eventually, he was able to create a scholarship for boxers who not only display heart inside the ring, but outside as well. The scholarship rewards students who have demonstrated leadership skills through volunteering, but also are full-time students who have jobs, and yet still manage to find time to come to the gym and train. On Nov. 14, Izzy will hold a fight card at NEIU (3600 W. Foster, Chicago, $15) at 6 p.m., which will feature several of the stu-

One of the fighters Izzy trains who will be fighting on the card is Jazmin Reyes, who attends NEIU and has trained for the last year. She started out doing tae kwon do and did it for 15 years. Izzy gave her the nickname “Lobita Brava” because of her humbleness outside the ring, but feistiness inside of it. Another one of Izzy’s fighters on the card is Tony Moyett, whose father is a promoter. “What I like about training with Izzy is that he sweats with you. He is not just going through the motions,” said Tony. n
