Ignacio Zaragoza Seguín, venció a los franceses en la Batalla de Puebla. Mucha gente aún confunde el Cinco de Mayo con el Día de la Independencia de México, celebrado el 16 de Septiembre. EXTRA preguntó a algunos líderes comunitarios qué significa el Cinco de Mayo para ellos y por qué es aún un día feriado para celebrar. Esto es lo que ellos dijeron:

inco de Mayo is the day to celebrate El Día de la Batalla de Puebla (The Day of the Battle of Puebla). It is celebrated in the US and in Mexico, in the state of Puebla. May 5, 1862, is the day the Mexican army, under the leadership of General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguin, won over the French at the Battle of Puebla. Many people still confuse Cinco de Mayo with Mexico’s Independence Day, which is celebrated on September 16. EXTRA asked a few community leaders what does 5 de Mayo mean to them and why is it still such an important holiday to celebrate. This is what they had to say:

Make enchiladas suizas, guacamole, healthy nachos with the turkey, arroz con pollo – mix with brown rice, and double up on the veggies; dance, take a group of friends, do a walking group. What should Cinco de Mayo be about? [It is about] uniting of the family, staying together. I think of Cinco de Mayo instead of being drunk with tequila, think about reuniting with family and friends and bring the kids. Maybe create a Mexican dance. This is when the fun element will come. 1. Machaque los aguacates en un tazón mediano con un tenedor, dejándolo en trocitos. Revuelva el tomate, mango, cebolla, chile, cilantro y hierbabuena. Añada el jugo de limón y mezcle con suavidad para distribuir uniformemente los ingredientes. Sazone con sal. 2. Mango-tomatillo guacamole por Ingrid Hoffman Ingredients: 2 ripe Hass avocados, halved, seeded, and peeled 2 tomatillos, husked and finely chopped 1 ripe mango, peeled, seeded, and cubed 1/2 small red onion, finely chopped 1 serrano chile, finely chopped (remove seeds before chopping for less heat) 2 tablespoons fresh cilantro, chopped 1 tablespoon fresh mint leaves, chopped 1 1/2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice kosher salt baked tortilla or pita chips, for serving 1. Mash the avocados in a medium bowl with a fork, leaving them still a bit chunky. Fold in the tomatillos, mango, onion, chile, cilantro, and mint. Add the lemon juice, and gently mix to evenly distribute the ingredients. Season with salt. 2. Lay a piece of plastic wrap directly on the surface of the guacamole to discourage discoloring, and refrigerate until chilled, at least 1 hour. Serve with the chips for dipping.

On April 29, Cook County Assessor Joseph Berrios announced at a press conference that his office will cooperate with local, township and county elected officials to host outreach sessions to help taxpayers affected by the flooding that occurred on April 18 in the Chicago area. “I want to do whatever I can do to help them [the residents],” said Berrios. All the commissioners agreed that the more important aspect in this situation is to reach a collaboration and cooperation between the local administrations to help the residents. Commissioner Elizabeth Gorman said that they can do very little “emotionally” but they should do everything they can to assist “financially.” The Assessor’s Office plans to announce outreach sessions in the following townships:

Leyden, Lyons, Maine, Niles, Norwood Park, Stickney, Proviso, Riverside and parts of Jefferson. The outreaches will take place within the next six months. The Assessor’s Office will work closely with county commissioners, township assessors, suburban mayors and other local officials in the affected areas. Owners with substantial structural building damage affecting market value are urged to apply for assessment reductions. Representatives from the Assessor’s Office will help taxpayers in their appeals. For all the residents affected by the flooding the commissioners strongly recommend to contact the Cook County Office. Business leaders urge for Smart Grid Bill compiled by EXTRA newspaper On April 30, the Illinois Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, the Hispanic American Construction Industry Association (H.A.C.I.A), Chatham Business Association and the Illinois Black Chamber of Commerce called on Governor Pat Quinn to sign Senate Bill 9 into law to complete the Illinois Smart Grid. The Smart Grid would modernize Illinois’ existing electricity infrastructure with a 21st century grid, an investment that will boost Illinois communities by creating jobs, attracting businesses and increasing long-term consumer savings. Senate Bill 9 was overwhelmingly passed in both chambers of the Illinois General Assembly in March. “As we emerge from the economic downturn, we need investments like Smart Grid to help revitalize our communities,” said Omar Duque, CEO of the Illinois Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. “I urge the Governor to sign Senate Bill 9 to continue to spur our economy and put people back to work.”

Las costas de México poseen muchas franjas de playas. En la Península de Yucatán, uno de los destinos más populares con playa es la ciudad resort de Cancún. The most notable attractions are the Meso-American ruins, cultural festivals, colonial cities, nature reserves and the beach resorts. The peak tourism seasons in the country are during December and in mid-Summer, with brief surges during the week before Easter and Spring break, when many of the beach resort sites become popular destinations for college students from the United States.

Beaches The coastline of Mexico harbor has many stretches of beaches. On the Yucatán peninsula, one of the most popular beach destinations is the resort town of Cancun. Just offshore, is the beach island of Isla Mujeres, and to the east is the Isla Holbox. To the south of Cancun is the coastal strip called Riviera Maya that includes the beach town of Playa del Carmen and the ecological parks of Xcaret and Xel-Há. Along the coast to the south of Acapulco are the surfing beaches of Puerto Escondido, the snorkeling, harbor beach of Puerto Angel, and the naturist beaches of Zipolite. El 25 de abril, la bien conocida diseñadora venezolana Carolina Herrera presentó su Colección Otoño/Invierno 2013 en el Ala Moderna del Instituto de Arte de Chicago. Su colección fue inspirada por música clásica de Beethoven y la elegancia de los 40s. Herrera se asoció con el compositor británico Tom Hodge para crear la música para su colección 2013. El efecto fue una oleada de emoción, azuzada por el poder de violines y piano, dejando un sentimiento de “melancolía y pasión”. “La moda es un misterio”, dijo Herrera quien cree que la gente debía vestir “talla correcta”, experimentar con “todo color”, sin

tener que usar ropa cara para verse bien. Ella acotó que chicas curveadas no debían llevar ropa pegada, ya que se ven “vulgares” en vez de “sexis”. “Simplicidad es elegancia”, añadió Herrera, quien recuerda aún su playera blanca favorita de su niñez. La colección de Herrera fue elegante con énfasis en “una cintura breve, los hombros, y el movimiento de las faldas”. Her collection was inspired by Beethoven’s classical music and the elegance from the 1940s. Herrera partnered up with British composer Tom Hodge to create the music for her Fall/ Winter 2013 runway collection. The effect was a rush of emotion, driven by the power of violins and piano, leaving a feeling of “melancholy” and “passion.” “Fashion is a mystery,” said Herrera who believes that people should wear their “right size,” experiment with “all colors” without having to wear expensive clothes to look good in. She said that curvy girls should not wear tight clothes, as they start to look “vulgar” rather than “sexy.” “Simplicity is elegance,” added Herrera who still remembers her favorite white shirt from her childhood. Herrera’s collection was elegant with an emphasis on “a tiny waist, the shoulders, and the movement of the skirts.” In addition to dramatic music, the collection had inspirations of dramatic colors, such as green, brown, black, violet and grey. The Chicago Comic and Entertainment Expo (C2E2) took place on April 25-27 in the West Building of the McCormick Place. While there were some celebrities charging for autographs and pictures, such as Burt Ward of Robin Fame and Ron Perlman from “Hellboy,” the real stars were the fans themselves. Dressed up and posing for photographs has made the biggest nerd a hero for a day. For the fourth year, this convention packed in the masses that visited booths, met artists, and attended panels of discussions on sword fighting among other topics. Some of the Latin artists present at the Convention were Sensational Spider-man’s Angel Medina and All-New X-men’s David Marquez. n

Actualmente están en el último lugar en la División Central de la Liga Americana, batallando con numerosas lesiones, y la asistencia de fanáticos ha ido en declive para los partidos en el Estadio U.S. Cellular. The White Sox offense struggles by Gabe Salgado The 2013 season for the Chicago White Sox has been tough. They are currently in last place in the American League Central Division, dealing with numerous injuries, and the fan attendance has been declining for the games at the U.S. Cellular Field. Injuries aside, the root of the difficulties seems to lie within the offense. The White Sox have had difficulty scoring runs in the 2013 season. Their largest average margin of victory this year has been three runs. The Sox have only scored five runs five times during the month of April. The White Sox record in those games is 3-2. Designated hitter Adam Dunn is batting only .143 with just five home runs and 11 runs batted in. First baseman Paul Konerko hasn’t done much better as he is only hitting .235 with four home runs and an on base percentage of just .295. As a team, the White Sox only have four players with a batting average of .300 or higher. They have also struck out over 200 times, and the team’s total batting average is just .229. This lack of offense has put a lot of stress on their pitching.

The inability to give run support has forced Robin Ventura to use his bullpen for comfort. The Sox relievers have pitched .108 of the teams 212.2 innings this season. There is no doubt that the time for improvement is now. Perhaps management needs to make changes to the roster to get this team going. n

El baile de graduación tradicionalmente se ha vuelto un evento divertido, bailar y hora de reflexionar todo tu pasado, y futuro. Al final de la noche, muchas parejas planean intimar. Si tal es el caso, ¡asegúrate de protegerte! Si decides tener sexo, usa condones, toma pastillas anticonceptivas y asegúrate de tener una noche divertida pero segura. Keep your prom night a good memory! by Laura Hanks Your prom is supposed to be one of the happiest ones in your life and you don’t want it to be the source of bad memories. Help keep your name off the statistics list and keep out of trouble. You don’t have to be drinking to have a good time. Parties can be even more fun when you are sober. Want a better way to celebrate the end of the year or high school? Try having a party that doesn’t serve alcohol, look for fun activities, such as game nights, or movies. Your best bet is to only invite your “real” friends and enjoy a quality night. The parties that seem to have anyone coming are usually the ones that lead to trouble. You have to remember that police are looking for trouble tonight, so if you’re causing it, chances are you’ll get caught. There are so many horror stories about teens getting killed or seriously injured in drinking and driving accidents. The simple answer to avoid being a statistic is to just don’t

do it! Many teenagers face the pressures of drinking in high school but you will face even more pressures as you enter into college, and even for the rest of your life. But as we now see campaigns on TV and everywhere, if you go out drinking, do not drive - plan to stay over, lose your keys, or simply do not go out. Prom has traditionally become an event of fun, dancing, and time to reflect on your entire past, and future. As the night ends, many young couples plan to be intimate. If that is the case, make sure you protect yourself! If you decide to have sex, use condoms, take birth control pills, and make sure you have a fun, but safe night. The month of May is a great time for change. You are graduating soon, whether

it is grade school, high school or college. The summer is upon you and the future is even closer. Enjoy these times, remember the people who love and care about you, and prepare yourselves for the challenges ahead.n

Víctor Flores Tres escuelas locales K-8, las Elementales Edison (Stickney) y Oak Terrace (Highwood) y la Academia Escolástica Saucedo (Chicago), fueron las ganadoras del concurso “Sé un campeón de la educación con Box Tops pro Educación” por su uso innovador de Box Tops para impactar positivamente en sus alumnos y comunidades. Las tres escuelas fueron honradas en el Ayuntamiento de Chicago el 16

de abril, donde cada cual recibió 20,000 Box Tops con valor de 2,000 dólares tanto como certificados de aprecio de la ciudad. Acosada financieramente, la Elemental Edison de Stickney fue elegida por ofrecer a sus alumnos el uso de su área de juego los fines de semana como refugio seguro a las calles. La Elemental Oak Terrace fue escogida por usar sus ganancias de Box Tops para ayudar a subsidiar carreras de ensueño a alumnos de bajos ingresos, sobresalientes en varias ramas de Ciencias y Artes. Prom readiness kit The Cinderella Project Compiled by Extra newspaper Prom is a once in a lifetime experience. That day is full of so much fun and represents the conclusion of one chapter in a girl’s life and the beginning of another. Today, attending prom can cost a family up to 1000 dollars. Local Latinas wanted to help out and make sure that the girls attending Farragut High School didn’t miss out on such an important milestone. The Cinderella Project planning committee for a second year in a row has collected hundreds and hundreds of beautiful dresses and accessories to be given to graduating girls attending Farragut High School in Little Village at no charge. Next year, the Cinderella committee hopes to expand to other area high schools. n

If you plan on being sexually active (and maybe even if you don’t), get yourself tested before prom and make sure to bring protection to prevent pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections. Most importantly, you can make some wise choices ahead of time that will keep you safe during and after prom.

Communicate with your date.

Have you talked to your partner about what’s happening after prom? Until you talk out details, you both may not be on the same page.

Turn down for what?

Turn up the after party, but remember you’ll have more fun if you know you’re safe. Plan the after party or other activities with your friends before prom. There are a lot of safe activities to do after prom like bowling, late night restau-

rants, movies, going to the beach, making a bonfire, or going to someone’s house to cook and play games. So talk to your crew and plan something that will make everyone happy!

If someone isn’t listening to you, repeat yourself and say what you want. • Just do it. Have a positive attitude. Don’t worry about other people having fun. Enjoy your friends, meet new people, and get off the wall! n

Los cambios para la Secundaria Católica San Patricio vienen por Brian Schiller trad. Víctor Flores La Secundaria San Patricio ha sido considerada ampliamente una de las escuelas católicas más influyentes y populares en el área de Chicago por más de una generación. EXTRA tuvo el placer de tener una breve charla con el presidente de la escuela, Hermano Konrad Diebold y el director Dr. Joe Schmidt. Al final del año escolar el Hermano Konrad se retirará de su servicio como presidente y dará las riendas al director actual Dr. Joe Schmidt. El Hermano Konrad sirvió en la Secundaria San Patricio por más de 35 años. Como presidente de la escuela, desarrolló la primera Junta de Fideicomisarios, se embarcó en una visión del 2000 de crear un espacio y agenda para las Bellas Artes, implementó un programa obligatorio de examen de drogas, renovó el campo atlético, renovó y expandió el centro administrativo, y recientemente, dedicó la recién renovada cafetería. Changes ahead for St. Patrick’s Catholic High School by Brian Schiller St Patrick’s High School has widely been considered one of the most influential and popular Catholic high schools in the Chicago land area for over a generation. EXTRA had the pleasure to have a brief chat with the school’s president, Brother Konrad Diebold and the school principal, Dr. Joe Schmidt. At the end of this school year Brother Konrad will be retiring from his service as school president and hand over reigns to current school Principal Dr. Joe Schmidt. Brother Konrad served St. Patrick’s High School for 35 years. As a school president he developed the first Board of Trustees, embarked on a vision of 2000 to create a fine arts space, and fine arts curriculum, implemented mandatory drug testing program, renovated the athletic field, renovated and expanded administrative center, and most recently dedicated the newly renovated school cafeteria.

Before 2008, St. Patrick’s maintained an enrollment of over 900 students, today it is just a bit over 700. To fight that growing epidemic, St. Patrick’s has committed to helping middle income families with scholarship opportunities, financial aid, and even no interest promissory notes to make sure families can graduate their kids. Many of today’s top grade school students have so many options, such as magnet schools that when it comes to choosing a high school, private schools are usually not their top choice. This is why today Catholic schools are fighting a battle to recruit the best and brightest due to the outstanding quality of Chicago’s top magnet schools.
