FOUNDED IN 1916 by President Woodrow Wilson, Acadia National Park is New England’s only federally protected land. In Down East Maine, Acadia sits on Mount Desert Island near the seaside village of Bar Harbor. The park covers over 47,000-acres of rugged mountains and dense forests with abundant wildlife, including the elusive moose. Rocky
cliffs plummet down to the Atlantic Ocean for majestic seascapes. Located 50 miles from Bangor, Acadia is an outdoor enthusiast’s paradise within easy reach too. There’s hiking, biking, swimming, horseback riding, and more. Are you heading to the Northeast soon? Here are seven can’t-miss outdoor activities when you’re exploring Acadia National Park. Trek the Cadillac North Ridge Cadillac Mountain is the shining star of Acadia National Park. At 1,530-feet tall, Cadillac is the tallest summit on the East Coast. The North Ridge offers a steep, 4.4-mile trail to hike Cadillac Mountain’s ascent. The trailhead is easily accessed from the Park Loop Road. Hikers are rewarded with unparalleled views of Bar Harbor and the bright blue Frenchman Bay. On clear days, Cadillac Mountain lets you see most of the Schoodic Peninsula. Visitors often remark about feeling on top of the world. Plan a Cadillac Mountain hike during the early morning to watch the sunrise. You could be the first American to see the sun come up! If you’re really feeling adventurous, pick up the South Ridge Trail at the Blackwoods Campground. Stroll on the Jordan Pond Nature Trail The Jordan Pond Nature Trail offers a more relaxing, family-friendly walk in Acadia National Park. The one-mile loop takes you along the gorgeous, 187-acre glacial lake. You can’t miss

the picturesque view of the Bubble Mountains. These peculiarly rounded, grass-covered peaks are the backdrop to the crystal-clear Jordan Pond. Note that swimming and paddleboarding in Jordan Pond are strictly prohibited. Entering the lake would threaten the water supply of nearby residents. However, kayaks and small boats are allowed. Jordan Pond has Atlantic salmon, trout, smelt, and sticklebacks for fishing. Birdwatchers can spot over 100 songbird and raptor species flying around. Jordan Pond also connects to the steeper Bubble Rock Trail. Cross the Ocean to Bar Island You’re probably thinking you need a boat for this outdoor activity. Guess again. At low tide, the ocean floor becomes completely exposed. Pedestrians and even ATVs can venture out on the natural land bridge. Acadia National Park visitors cross from Bar Harbor to Bar Island on foot within about 20 minutes. Along the way, you’ll discover clamshells, sea snails, crabs, lobsters, and other marine life burrowed in the sand. On Bar Island, people have stacked stones in cairns to greet you. Follow the trail and turn right to visit author Jack Perkins’ former cottage. Turn left to ascend
upward and snap photos of Cadillac Mountain from afar. Remember to watch the clock and cross back before the bay rises. You don’t want to be stuck during high tide. Cool Off at Sand Beach Down East Maine is known for rocky beaches that require wearing water shoes. Acadia National Park visitors are typically surprised to stumble upon Sand Beach. This curved, 290-yard beach is magically nestled between two craggy cliffs. Leave your car in the Park Loop Road parking lot and bring your beach bag. Changing rooms are available to slip into your bathing suit. Then, climb down two short flights of stairs to Sand Beach. Most people simply put down a towel to relax and sunbathe. The daring ones squeal into the cold Atlantic Ocean like a polar plunge. Sand Beach’s waves are rarely warmer than 55 degrees Fahrenheit. You might also kayak or canoe into Newport Cove and around Acadia’s Great Head. Experience Thunder Hole From Sand Beach, you can access Acadia National Park’s Ocean Path. This rocky, three-mile trail delivers you to the famed Thunder Hole. Every Bar Harbor tourist should experience this natural phenomenon
firsthand. Walk down the steps to the Thunder Hole viewing area. Be patient for your turn as this area gets crowded, especially during July and August. Hold onto the railings when the walkway is wet to avoid slips. Soon you’ll see a small cavern carved into the rugged cliffs. When a large wave comes ashore, water gets trapped and shoots upward with a loud roar. Frequently, Thunder Hole sends water skyward for 30 or more feet. Be prepared to get wet and giggle when you’re splashed. Venture Out to Otter Point The Ocean Path keeps going after Thunder Hole to tour Otter Point. On your journey, don’t miss Monument Cove and one of Acadia National Park’s most underrated views. You’ll then arrive at Otter Point and set your sights on the remarkable 110-foot cliff. Otter Cliff is one of the highest headlands on the Atlantic Ocean north of Brazil. Well-trained rock climbers often gear up to scale Otter Cliff’s granite face. If you’re not tethered, be cautious walking on rocks. The wet, jagged stone is dangerously slippery. Most sights, including the Spindle, are seen from the Ocean Path anyway. Back in 1604, Samuel de Champlain notably crashed his ship into the Spindle and camped on Otter Point. Continued on page 16

Get Off the Beaten Path Too many Acadia National Park tourists stay on the Park Loop Road. True outdoor adventurers choose the carriage roads instead. Thanks to John D. Rockefeller Jr., Acadia has 57 miles of wooded, historic carriage roads to ramble on. Head to Hulls Cove Visitor Center for a map of these lesser-used paths. You can make finding the 17 arched stone bridges a scavenger hunt. Cars aren’t allowed, but feel free to hike or bike. During winter, you could cross-country ski or snowshoe. Stop at Wildwood Stables for an authentic carriage road experience. Chartered horsedrawn carriage rides are available from May to October. The longest rides are four hours and include a glimpse of Great Cranberry Island. Is it raining on your Acadia National Park visit? Don’t worry because there are indoor activities. Drive your car up the Park Loop Road to Cadillac Mountain instead of hiking. Learn about Native American history in the Abbe Museum. Tour the Nature Center adjacent to Sieur de Monts Spring. Sample the local favorite, popovers, at the Jordan Pond House. See a show at the nearby 1932 Criterion Theatre. Get a relaxing massage at Tree of Life Day Spa. Throw back a cold one at the Atlantic Brewing Company. Bar Harbor is the perfect New England destination. Come back explore Acadia National Park when the sun is out. n E X C L U S I V E LY Y O U R S

WHEN THE STAY AT HOME order was announced in early March of 2020, I was concerned about my shop and how we would survive with an indefinite shutdown. We have been advertising in Exclusively Yours Magazine for more than 20 years and have had great results. They came through for us again when they strongly recommended that we needed to promote immediately and run a sale by private appointment. After considering our options we decided to run a sale and advertise our spring and summer lines. The day after the magazine was mailed we had 4 calls from readers telling us they wanted what was shown on page 19 of Exclusively Yours that showcased our “Charlie B Collection”.
Exclusively Yours gave me the courage to try and do business in a “different way during a very difficult time.” We started making appointments immediately and the first two shoppers came in and spent over $1,200 dollars and shoppers continue to call and make appointments. Exclusively Yours Magazine was there in our hour of need. Thanks EY for helping our family business. We love your readers! ~ Jan Carpenter, proprietor. n Exclusively Yours Magazine, a family business helping family businesses since 1947.

Make the BATHROOM Most of a REJUVENATION n n n
18
ADDING ADDITIONAL BATHROOM SPACE to your home or renovating an outdated facility can improve your home’s usability and increase its value, too. To get the most practical benefits and value out of your new space, there are several factors to consider. Before you get started, take into account these considerations about the design and function of your new bathroom from the remodeling experts at the National Association of the Remodeling Industry. Space A primary consideration is the available footprint to create your new bath. This is often a concern as children reach their teen years and also with expanding families. If there aren’t enough bathrooms in the house, you may want to add another, or it may be that you simply need to improve the layout and features to make better use of the existing space. For example, if the bath will be shared by multiple members of the family, a separation of the sinks from the rest of the room may be helpful.

Bathroom Rejuvenation
n n n
Features Determining how you will use your bathroom dictates the features you’ll want to include. A guest or hall bath is likely to have far fewer features than a master bath but may share some similarities with a kids’ bathroom. First, you’ll need to make decisions about basics like lighting, the number of sinks and amount of counter space you’ll need. If you like baths, you’ll need to decide between a tub and shower combination unit or separate facilities. With a separate tub, the style you prefer may guide your overall design. The aesthetic for a bathroom with a focal point like a claw-foot tub is likely different from a jetted tub. Storage Storage is one of the biggest concerns in any design, particularly in rooms as small as typical bathrooms. Carefully consider this aspect of the room during your pre-planning phase. To help determine how much space you need, make a list of all the items you need to store in the bathroom, including cleaning agents, toiletries, linens, first aid items and medications. It’s a good idea to also think about where in the room you would like to store each of these items. You may want some of the toiletries in the shower area, while others will be used near the sink or dressing area. Sustainability Many contemporary bathroom fixtures are designed with sustainability in mind, so you can manage your water usage while still enjoying a water-rich environment. You can find water-saving features on everything from toilets to shower heads to even sink faucets. Accessibility Applying universal design principles to your project can promote safety and increase your home’s appeal to a wider range of buyers in the future. In the bathroom, you can improve safety by incorporating non-slip flooring surfaces and ensuring the space is well-lit. Other ideas include adjusting counter and toilet heights to make bathrooms more accessible (wall-hung toilets should be approximately two inches higher). You could incorporate structural bracing around the tub, shower and toilet for grab bars. You might also consider a walk-in tub or stand-up shower with no threshold, levered handles for faucets and an adjustable showerhead. MODERNIZING ALTERATIONS Creating A Contemporay Look n n n
JUNE 2020
EVEN IF YOUR HOME has seen a generation or two of living, creating a contemporary new look may not require a fullscale renovation. The key to creating a more modern feel is all in the details. Many of these elements can be tackled one by one so you can transform your home into the modern marvel you desire on a timeframe and budget that fits your lifestyle. If a contemporary home is your ultimate goal, start with these key features to create a more modern look. Lighting Dingy lighting and dim rooms are the antithesis of modern design. A contemporary space is airy and bright, and the lighting fixtures often help set that tone. Replace outdated fixtures with modern alternatives that boast sleek lines and finishes. Add more fixtures, including table-side task lighting and floor lamps, to brighten a room with limited natural light. Have some fun with the lighting by incorporating colored or textured globes that allow the fixtures to become focal points of contemporary design rather than functional afterthoughts.
Windows When it comes to curb appeal, windows play an essential role in the overall aesthetic. Old, outdated windows are a tell-tale sign of an aging home, so when you’re planning for a modern exterior upgrade, be sure to include the windows as part of your plan. An option like Milgard Trinsic Series vinyl windows offers an expansive viewable glass area and a narrow frame to help you embrace modern home design. Not only do they provide even sightlines for clean, unobstructed views, they’re manufactured for maximum durability and energy efficiency and require little to no maintenance. Walls No matter the color, a freshly painted space simply feels new. For a true contemporary style, honor simplicity in design and keep colors on the lighter side. However, don’t be afraid to introduce a pop of color in the form of a bold accent wall or even wallpaper that makes a statement. A good rule of thumb: maintain a simple palette of no more than three shades to incorporate a truly minimalist, modern atmosphere.

Doors The entry and exit points to your home are more than functional features; think of them as a canvas for making a bold design statement. For the patio, consider a sleek and contemporary door with a frame profile so narrow you’ll hardly know it’s there. For example, Milgard offers a contemporary Trinsic Series sliding patio door with the maximum available viewable glass area and an optional narrow handle that blends seamlessly into the frame to lend a modern flair. The doors are also ideal for low-maintenance living; the durable vinyl frames don’t absorb moisture or require painting. Hardware Even small details matter when it comes to contemporary design. You may not need to replace or update your cabinetry, but you’ll may want to select hardware that fits a modern motif. Avoid weathered and polished finishes in brass or nickel, and opt for selections like matte black, gold and copper, which are all well-suited for contemporary kitchens. Don’t be afraid to mix and match for a bit of an eclectic look, such as different pulls for the upper and lower cabinets or a unique style for drawers. GOD’S CORNER by Ger trude M. Puelicher n n n

HAVE YOU EVER succumbed to a sense of bewilderment at the rapidity with which disasters seemed to strike? Have you ever felt as though there was no stemming a relentless flood of unhappy, discouraged thinking that was overwhelming you with its intensity? A flood of thinking that unchecked would sweep away all the strength and courage and calm that a firm reliance on the presence and power of God had built up during a lifetime? If you have reached the point where a conscious awareness of God seems to be eluding you, when you are actually struggling to find again the “peace that passeth understanding,” when you are analyzing every thought to see wherein you have failed to meet the demands of an existence that after all is desperately human, suddenly there comes the miracle. It is not a blinding flash of light nor an illuminated scroll. It is nothing dramatic nor sensational. It is a gradual release from heartache and fatigue and concern. It is a slow seeping away of the tension and tautness that were threatening to explode. In its place is a steadying sense of a world that has stopped reeling, of a firmness once more under one’s feet. Peter said, “Love worketh no ill to his neighbor; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.” And you will find as all others who willingly opened their hearts and minds to it that love is the miracle, the miracle that heals. The cynic who contends that civilization is degenerating, that the world is a jungle, that humans are animals living a macabre existence has much to learn. You and I know that when trouble comes love is poured forth in a steady, selfless stream from a seemingly endless source. It shows itself in hundreds of little ways, totally unexpected ways from friends, neighbors, associates, acquaintances. And gradually, it heals. Why? Like all profound truths, the answer to sthe “why” is so simple. Love is of God, and as we let ourselves be a transparency for love we are being a transparency for God. And God has never failed to heal. n
