How to be confident Written by Debra Daly (IE) Confidence is a concept which everyone is infactuated with whilst also being a trait which all people wish to possess. The issue lies in the fact that confidence is just as much about how self assured you are in actuallity as it is about how others percieve you. Hence this is where the issue lies, we all wish to be confident but there is a large gap between whether you are truly self assured or just an excellent actor. This brings us to the question of why everyone desires to appear in such a way. Is it simply as we wish others to be impressed by us or is it something deeper? It is very rare that you would meet an individual that exudes confidence in all situations, it is relative. It is difficult to find a balance between justified confidence and cockiness. I will outline below the manner in which you can perfect this balance.

1. Pinpoint the situations in which you find it the most difficult to act with confidence, it

could be at a party or something as simple as speaking to the opposite gender.

2. Be mindful of why this makes you particularly uncomfortable e.g. if it is because you are surrounded by unfamiliar faces.

3. Remember that everyone is in the same boat and probably feel the exact same as you. 4. Breathe. Don‘t be so harsh on yourself. A good excercise is to breathe in through your

nose for a count of four and then breathe out for a count of six.

5.Be aware of your body language. If you are slouching and looking at the ground nobody is going to approach you however if you ensure that your posture is good and that you make eye contact with whomever you are speaking you will be sure to appear more self assured and also more engaged in any activity.

6.

Condense the situation into manageable steps and make it your task to simply complete these steps. This will distract you from all your worries about the situation and you will instantly appear more self assured.

7. Make yourself as comfortable as possible. Wear clothing in which you are comfortable,

surround yourself with people who accept you for who you are.

8. Make sure to share your issues with some friends. By bringing a close friend to a party you are instantly more relaxed and at ease in the environment.

As you have probably already observed these steps merely describe how you can appear more confident to others. This is due to the fact that if you adopt certain behavioural patterns they will eventually become natural. Hence why you must make a conscious effort to include these tips in your everyday life for a prolonged period of time. The most important thing to remember is to not lose yourself in your pursuit of confidence. After all, there is no point in being confident in a persona that isn‘t yours, it is rather counter productive. Be yourself and everything will work out. By being more confident you open the door to endless possibilities. The key to success of any kind is to believe in yourself and your actions. Don‘t expect to change overnight it is a long road just be confident that you will get there eventually, that’s the first step.

BODY TALKS Written by Veronika Hauerová (CZ) Are words actually the most important part of a conversation? We think a lot about what we say and how we phrase it but we often forget that we are sending other signals. Accordingly to studies, when communicating with others, just 7% is verbal, 38% is vocal (sounds and tone of your voice) and 55% is physical. Let’s go through the basic poses so we can look even more confident and cool in the pictures from General Assembly!

Crossing Arms Quite a normal and natural pose, right? Now think about it. Does a person standing like this seem confident? NO! We cross our arms when we feel nervous, negative towards something or defensive. We can commonly see the crossed arm gesture in shopping centres, elevators and generally in public places where people feel insecure or uncertain. Hands in pockets Empty pockets - why don’t we just put our hands there. It is an easy way to feel more relaxed, but what do other people think? Usually this is not the best position. Other people might be feeling little a bit intimidated and think that you want to show them how superior you are or even that you don’t care about them. Not the best impression.

Confident people can keep their hands still without the need of hiding or moving them. Showing one hand can often indicate an increase in confidence, on the other side having thumbs slightly in pockets often can send a sign of arrogance.

Are you nervous? Hide it. they do not have to know it. There are so many facial expressions which can easily reveal nerves, for example biting lips. It might be useful at a party while flirting with somebody but not during a serious situation. Also try to avoid cringing or standing rigidly. A big factor could be your look. People often blink faster when they are nervous and change their target of view. When you look forward your posture will improve and you will appear more relaxed.

WE GO WHERE THE MONEY GOES

By Phoebe Bachsleitner (DE)

With the session theme being the economy and finance, it felt like the perfect opportunity to take a closer look at currencies and their visuals. We created a session bill and, in true EYP fashion, let them portray the faces of young people from all over Europe. As we have seen in public discussions surrounding dollar bills, it makes a difference whom we as a society put on a pedestal by putting them on our money. We pose the question: why not us?
