We are so grateful for your trust and ongoing support during all these years! It was in 1993 when Rodos Princess Hotel paved the way for H Hotels Collection in Rhodes, to be followed by the serene Princess Sun Hotel, the vibrant Lindos Princess Resort, the beautiful Princess Andriana Resort, the alluring Boutique 5 Hotel & Spa and the groundbreaking Mayia Exclusive Resort. Six enchanting summer destinations inviting guests from all over the world to gather and rejoice summer! For the publication of this magazine we have worked together as a family, in the same way as we have always done, loyal to the same high values which led us to launch our six hospitality establishments in southern Rhodes. “A risky decision!”, as Mr Ioannis Hatzilazarou, the creator of H Hotels Collection, confesses in his main interview of the magazine. “Risky, though highly successful, for H Hotels constitute today a point of reference for Rhodian hospitality. To discover the uniqueness of every one of our resorts, we talked with the people who work and love each establishment the most; we met with professionals of gastronomy and event specialists to get to know even more about the delights of summer that await; we got acquainted with the teams who mold H Hotels into precious summer destinations for families, couples, adventure aficionados and tranquillity seekers from around the globe; and we also took special note to initiate you to our beloved island as we looked at the Medieval Town of Rhodes with fresh eyes, uncovered a hidden gem and took a trip back in time to reveal the colourful story of a traditional artform. We worked together to present not just a typical hotel magazine, but genuine life stories; stories that have brought so many people together for the first issue of this magazine, stories that include the H of hospitality, history and happiness; stories where the H comes from the Heart!

THE INSPIRATION The creation and the milestones of a 25 Years of hospitality history in Rhodes through the interview with the creator of H Hotels Collection, Mr Ioannis S. Hatzilazarou. Plus, what makes each and every H Hotels Collection resort so unique?

THE INSPIRATION

The H Milestones 1993 Rodos Princess Beach Hotel is founded and a new chapter in Rhodian hospitality begins, as first-time visitors of Rhodes get to discover the southern part of the island.

1997 Four years later, a new member is added to the H Hotels Collection portfolio. Princess Sun Hotel is founded, introducing to this day guests to the most breathtaking sea views from this beautiful hotel.

2002 This is the year that marked the change for H Hotels Collection. The opening of Lindos Princess Beach Resort, gives everyone another reason to visit the area of south-eastern Rhodes.

2012 The 10 years that elapsed from the last opening were for a reason; actually for two reasons. Boutique 5 Hotel & Spa and Princess Andriana Resort & Spa welcome guests for the first time in the summer of 2012.

2015 What makes this year special is that Rodos Princess Beach Hotel launches two new annexes of family rooms, reaching a total of 575 rooms and family rooms.

2016 Princess Andriana Resort & Spa was certified with ISO 9001:2008, ISO 22000:2005 and ISO 14001.

2017 As part of Princess Andriana Resort & Spa’s gastronomic upgrades where H Hotels focused in 2017, the Coral Beach Bar & Restaurant opens, as well as the Italian and Burger-themed Restaurants. In addition, two annexes were built, dedicated entirely to family rooms, and the resort received the “Travelife Gold Certification” for accommodation sustainability.

2018 H Hotels celebrate 25 years of their successful presence in Rhodes with the opening of the 6th hotel of H Hotels Collection, Mayia Exclusive Resort & Spa. The first Premium Adults-Only All-Inclusive Resort of its kind and the perfect place to celebrate a course that has changed the hotel map of Rhodes with its modern, authentic and heartfelt hospitality!

A MAN OF MANY RISKS INTERVIEW A fascinating story that includes coming back to Rhodes after 25 years of living in Congo, investing money, facing financial problems, achieving goals and taking numerous risks. How can you transform a less popular area into a holiday destination? How can you make a successful comeback to your country? What makes a guest return to your hotel more than 30 times? Here is the story behind the top hotel collection in Rhodes as experienced and narrated by its very own creator, Mr Ioannis Hatzilazarou. Î&#x2019;y his side, Mrs Maria Hatzilazarou supports and complements his course of life and career. And what a course it is!

Let us start your story by telling us about your decision to go to Congo. At the age of 17 I went to Congo to find my older siblings who were already there. We are a big family, six boys and one girl. We all worked together and developed good business activity, working in the trade and industry sectors, in the textile industry to be more specific. In 1974, riots broke out in Congo, and the foreignersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; properties were passed on to private individuals. The government seized our property, living conditions became hard, but we were left in possession of one of our two factories. Two years later, there was another upheaval, the government changed and the Europeans were allowed to work again, but with 51% participation of locals. We stayed there and worked until 1990. We stayed in Congo for a total of 25 years -from 1965 to 1990- but almost every year we would come to Rhodes on vacation. Despite the bad situation in the country, you still remained in Congo for 25 whole years! I took the risk. I am a person that takes risks in my business, both in Africa and in Greece, but at the same time I am also careful and prudent. I like the risk but always weighing the circumstances. I always took risks because I want to achieve what I have in mind. In 1990 you returned to Greece with your family. What were your plans then?

When we returned in 1990, I came with a very specific purpose. I bought the land in 1987 where my first hotel, Rodos Princess, would be built. I had no intention to abandon my enterprises in Congo, but unfortunately in 1991 there were rebellions again. It was an unstable country; many internal conflicts and civil war were taking place, and the Europeans would leave and go back again from time to time. In 1991, however, all Europeans left the country and our factory was destroyed. But also in Rhodes, things were not easy at all. Ten months after I had started building Rodos Princess, the funding I was expecting from Congo suddenly stopped, and this created additional problems. Knowing that in Congo you had been involved in other industries, how was your idea to open a hotel born? Although I had been travelling a lot both for business and on holidays, the truth is that I did not know anything about the Hotel Industry; neither did I have any involvement in the Construction Industry. I had been really active in dealing with business, industrial and trading enterprises, but I had nothing to do with the tourism and construction sector. But one thing was for sure: I wanted to live on my island. So, I sat down and thoroughly studied the prospects of Rhodes, the jobs that were to be developed, and I realized that tourism had huge potential. That is how I decided to get into this sector, I started getting information from acquaintances and friends who had already the expertise on

that. As for construction, I chose one of the best architects on the island who went above and beyond my expectations, and thus my first hotel became a model hotel. However, the location you chose was not developed at that time. When I bought the land here, everyone thought I was crazy. But I had my vision, I could see way ahead and I knew that the future was here. Despite the lack of infrastructure in the area, I was fully conscious of two facts: a) this area has the best beaches on the island and b) some areas of the island had already been saturated. Did the fact that you come from the nearby village Asklepiio play its role? Yes, I wanted to live in my birthplace. In 1993, Rodos Princess was ready to welcome the first visitors. But how did you manage to integrate your hotel into the market of Rhodes -a hotel that is so far away from the traditional tourist areas? That was really a “risk on the risk”. It was also difficult for a Greek from abroad to initiate a construction project here. When the architect prepared the designs, I visited the five largest tour operators on the island. At first, when they heard of the location, they did not even want to talk about it. But I insisted, I told myself “I will risk and whatever will be, will be”. One of the tour operators booked a small number of rooms for the opening of the hotel. The truth is that the Italian market also supported me because the Italians visited the area and the surrounding beaches a lot. In addition, 10 days after the opening of the hotel, there was the peak of the Kurdish-Turkish conflict, and as a result all the planes would land in Rhodes. I got lucky! So, that is how they got to know you. The hotel was full right away. Things went very well during the two and a half months of the first season, because we opened in July. Of course, most of the tour operators had their doubts: who is this Hatzilazarou, and what does he know about tourism? But, fortunately, it all went perfectly well. After the second season, the tour operators came and requested rooms. Great! We will expand! So, for the first year, another 50 rooms were added to the existing 205 rooms. After that, they asked for even more, and I constructed another 50 rooms. I remember that after the Berlin exhibition they asked me for even more. I had already 50 rooms in the pre-construction phase, and

they gave me a considerable downpayment so that in 50 days I would have finished these rooms as well. In those early days, as a new hotelier in an area that was not that well-known, how did you feel? Stress, too much stress. I went through very difficult times. I felt as if I had fallen into the ocean; I was swimming without knowing where I was going and what would happen next. Soon there came new expansions and new hotels... In 1994, there was a 50-room expansion in Rodos Princess. In 1995, there was another 72-room expansion. In 1997, I bought Princess Sun Hotel, which I immediately upgraded to A Class and added 66 rooms, while in 2001 I started building Lindos Princess. Lindos Princess is your biggest hotel. Was that your intention from the beginning? That was indeed a record! On 17 May 2001, we set up the foundations of Lindos Princess and on 29 June 2002 it opened, always under my supervision. There was no construction company involved in the venture, it was just the architects and myself. 416 rooms were ready within 13 months and 17 days! Did you discover on the way that you started to like the hospitality industry? Yes, indeed. The first two years were difficult, but later on when I saw that everything was running smoothly, the customers were happy and tour operators were asking for more and more rooms, I revised all my preconceptions on the matter. Have you played a key role in expanding the island's destinations in southern Rhodes? Yes, by all means. The construction of our hotels brought forth a significant rise in the demand for accommodation in southern Rhodes, and today there are several hotels in the area. Then did you take a break? Ten years passed by before opening your next hotels. I bought the land for the next hotels. I always buy the land for all my hotels. Everything I have achieved was done with my two hands and my family. In 2007 I bought the land for Princess Andriana, I had already bought the land for Boutique 5. Princess Andriana opened in 2012, along with Boutique 5. And after Boutique 5 came Mayia.

Before we get to Mayia, tell us a few words about that summer when both hotels opened at the same time and you already had three hotels in operation, how did you manage all that? At that time I had become familiar with all these, I had learnt a lot. After the opening of Lindos Princess, I had already gained the knowledge and experience, I had enough expertise to meet the requirements of running five hotels. After your fifth hotel, you became a very powerful player on the island. Yes, it goes without saying. I am the No1 hotelier on the island. Had you ever have imagined things would go this far? No, the thought had never even crossed my mind. I always went on and created, and every step would lead me to the next one. I was carefully planning of what I had to do and made the right moves. In the summer of 2018, Mayia opened, a new risk for you. Were you vindicated? The first season was only two and a half months, so we still have to wait and see. The important thing about Mayia is the fact that it is the first Premium Adults Only, All-Inclusive Resort in Rhodes, a truly innovative product. I spent much more money on Mayia than in my other hotels because I always want every new step to go beyond the previous ones. It will take 2 to 3 seasons until we say that Mayia has established its identity, but I strongly believe in its success. Already Mayiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first visitors are fascinated with the high quality of the services, the food and the architecture of the building. Which do you think are your personality traits that have mainly contributed to your success?

When I was a child, my father had a grocery store in the village and I would go there to help him. I had been there next to him since the age of 11. He is the one who taught me the basics, and I have always had the entrepreneurial spirit. I always want to learn more and keep walking. My mind never stops working, I always see ahead. And I never hesitate to take risks. Today also all the children of the family work in the hotels. A businessman must always ask his family. My family supported me, they have always been by my side. Before opening Princess Andriana and Boutique 5, we gathered all together and told them: "Listen, I can still manage; if you want me to, I will move on." And all my three children responded positively by saying: "Dad, we're moving on; we are next to you; we love this job." And that was it. What gives me strength is that all my children work in the enterprises and each one of them has taken over their domain. Speaking about the family, what is your role, Mrs. Hatzilazarou, all along this path? M.H. We started together, always taking the difficult decisions together. Only in the beginning, when Rodos Princess started, he was digging for two weeks and I had no idea. But then we had no experience, we did not know what it means to live in Greece and do business, we were still in our infancy. How did you see the new enterpreneurial step of your husband? Î&#x153;.H. When we set off from Africa, he said: "I will not do anything small; I will do something great to make it all worth it." I am always beside him and our children. Should any tension arise from time to time, I intervene to resolve it. Such things happen in a family business.

What is your role today in H Hotels Collection? Î&#x153;.H. I am in the management sector, but I also deal a lot with the daily routine of the hotels. I keep track of how everything is running, meet with the staff and resolve all issues that may arise. In your opinion, which are the elements that have contributed to this huge success? M.H. Patience, perseverance, hard work. Also, our methodicality: we set up a hotel, we ensure its smooth operation and then move on to the next step. Our children have also undertaken crucial areas where we were lagging behind. We have been mostly empirical whereas our children have the knowledge. Let us now talk about the factors that led you to this success. There is a very nice bonding, and of course I refer to the staff because one can not do anything on their own. We have employees who have been working with us for 25 years, that is since our first day of operation. Also, I have always been honest and consistent. I have never lied; whatever I promise, I will do it, and that has been my major advantage. I have never delayed any bank payments; I have always responded with consistency to the tour operators by providing their clients with everything we have promised; I have always been fair and kept my word to the staff. I believe that all these are the major contributing factors that have brought me to this point today. With regard to the guests of H Hotels, who is the happy customer for you? What is it that you believe the happy customer enjoys the most? Our customers find in our hotels everything we have promised to offer them, and even more. Our very good management brings forward excellent results. There are families coming again and again. Their children have grown up here, they cherish the memories of their summer holidays. There are also customers who have returned more than 30 times, even twice in the same season. It is also very important that each hotel has its own identity, its own character and, as a consequence, has its own loyal guests who find what they are looking for in their summer vacations. Do you also support the local community on the island through sponsorships? Of course, we are the first to respond to whatever is needed. We are one of the Grand Sponsors for the basketball

team of the island, Kolossos of Rhodes, but unfortunately the team is not doing well this year. Whatever I can do for my homeland, I will do it. I will always be here to help. How do you see the development of southern Rhodes as a tourist destination? It is a developing region, but unfortunately the island's infrastructure is lacking; that is, we have wonderful hotels but the island has many shortfalls. For example, the island needs a second airport in southern Rhodes; there are spots available that would be ideal for an airport. The island grows at a rapid and dynamic pace; therefore, the road network needs to be upgraded all over the island. It is imperative that the State makes improvements; private initiative on its own is not enough. What are you more proud of throughout your career? Throughout my career, I have been following the same steps: I create, work, ensure the smooth operation and then plan the next move. I am proud of our good reputation. My greatest satisfaction is that we, as a family, have a nationwide good repute. We feel proud when we meet and discuss with people who show us their appreciation. What would you advise a new investor in the hospitality industry? It depends on what risk one wants to take. The truth is that today, to get started, you need a lot of money. I would not care, I would risk, as I have always done. What about the future? What more is there to expect after the opening of Mayia? After Mayia's opening, an important purchase has already been made, next to Princess Andriana and Boutique 5. Now we are trying to orientate towards what product we are going to launch, what character we will attribute to our new hotel so as to offer something new and innovative. Within the next two - two and a half years we will have our next proposal ready! Let us close with a message for your hotel guests. We are delighted to welcome them every year to our hotels and offer them something different. We are glad that they always leave happy and more than satisfied with their vacation. We do our best to fulfill every single wish of our guests. TALENT NEVER FADES! Once upon a time in Rhodes, the Italians built the -now legendary- ICARO pottery factory. We met with Mrs Maria Kardalis, once a craftswoman in the factory, who enthusiastically shared the story of Rhodes that can be traced in the remnants of an art mastery bursting with colour and creativity. “I loved this job” she begins her recount, “I was Mr Hatzikonstantis’ favourite employee; he always had me standing next to him” she says as she looks at a picture of the owner, Mr Hatzikonstantis, and his staff taken in 1965. “I started working there when I was 13 years old and I stayed in ICARO for 15 years, from 1953 to 1968. For our first week we worked on drafts for practice, without getting paid. Those of us who performed well were the ones he would keep to work with him” she recalls. Mrs Maria used to sketch and colour vases, plates and anything that was crafted in the factory. “They were free-hand patterns, especially the flowers, but the deer and boat patterns were predrawn sketches. We had to colour them”, she says. “You do not see this kind of fine art today; it is a lost art, full of colour and with such attention to detail”. “It wasn’t just decorative plates that we made. Some of the vases were so huge that we had to be standing up to paint them. It was hard work, but I really loved it. I wish I still had enough strength in my hands to keep working on this art. I would make four to five pieces per day, but if it was a big vase we could only make two. You can imagine the hard work it required, as we had to focus in perfecting every detail” Mrs Maria

remembers as she describes the every day life at ICARO factory. “Orders came in from around the globe. Tourists would stop to watch us working, congratulating us in their languages” she remembers. She never quit her engagement with this type of art, as she later worked on embroidery, embellishing her creations with colourful images just like she did back in the day, at ICARO. Yes, she still remembers how to sketch and colour, and what’s left from this era, is 3 items of the factory and many friends. “I still have friends from the factory. Everyday life was hard but cheerful”. The tragic accident of Mr Hatzikonstantis and his wife led to the closing down of the factory. “That day he was talking on the phone with my husband and mentioned how good I was at work. We were all devastated. I was among the last to leave the factory” she says. ICARO closed down in 1988 but its legend lives on in the colourful motifs of its iconic products -now precious collectibles- and in exhibitions of its amazing culture. “I still remember how to sketch the patterns. Would you like me to make you one?” she asks with a sparkle in her eyes. I pass her a piece of paper and a pencil, and she indeed sketched a flower within seconds. It is true what they say: talent never fades.

I.C.A.R.O. The factory I.C.A.R.O. (Industria Ceramiche Artistiche Rodio Orientali) was founded in 1928 and it was created to revive the ceramic craftsmanship of the island and to reproduce the world-renowned Iznik ceramics also known as “Lindian” as many of them were found in Rhodes. I.C.A.R.O.’s product line included ceramic items, such as vases, jars and pitchers, decorative plates and sculptures that became known for their vibrant colours and beautiful motifs. There are villages where traditions of yore are still deeply esteemed, and people love to remember and revive all those customs that make Rhodes a grand island. If you want to see what Rhodes used to be like before the growth of tourist inflow, just park your car close to the village’s main square and let us guide you to its must-sees. Fanning out around the church and under the shades of the castle, the houses of the village are built in the authentic architectural style of rural Rhodes, with stone walls and beautiful gardens. At the centre of the genuine Rhodian village lies one of the two oldest churches of the island, a Byzantine church built in 1060 dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. As soon as you enter the church, you will find yourself enthralled by the frescoes on the walls and a rare finding: an illustration of the Apocalypse of John, a stunning depiction of the Bible’s most fascinating book, the Book of Revelation. Two museums are your next stops, the old olive press built in 1879, today a Folklore Museum and the Ecclesiastical Museum. Then, take the

path leading to the castle ruins. Archaeologists disagree on its origins and date of its foundation; some believe that it preceded the arrival of the Knights of the Holy Crusades, but the most prevailing opinion is that it was built in two phases during the 13th and 15th centuries by the Knights of St. John. The tower on the northwestern side of the castle was reconstructed in recent days. What is truly spectacular about this castle though is the view; a breathtaking view that travels your eye beyond the olive groves, reaching all the way to the sea. In Asklepiio, one thing is for sure; its people love it. Two major feasts take place every August. The first one is held on 15 August (day of the Assumption of Virgin Mary). The second one, held 3 or 4 days later, is called the “Antamoma” (which in Greek means ‘getting together’) where all people from the village meet and celebrate their coming home with traditional dances and local dishes like ‘Koulouria’ (local handmade pasta) and ‘Lopia’ (beans with goat’s cheese). Ask the Front Desk for the exact date of these festivities, and do not miss out on the chance to celebrate the local way. A visit to the village of Asklepiio offers a look to a different aspect of Rhodes, and it is truly worth dedicating a few hours to exploring it.

GROWING UP IN THE SHADOW OF HISTORY By Titsa Pipinou

A child growing up in Rhodes grows in the shadows of its medieval castles and can play pretending to be a warrior in real battlements and climbing on castle walls, even if the weapon in his hand is just a plastic pistol, even if the shield is a pot lid and the knight’s cape an old beach towel. Sometimes he may yield a broomstick as a spear, sharpened at one end with a small pocket knife. For a while, he can be King Arthur, D’ Artagnan or the valiant Knight de Gozon who made history for slaying the mighty dragon of Rhodes. It makes no difference that dragons with fire-spouting eyes, horrid breath and wings on their scaly backs don’t exist; in a child’s imagination dragons and knights always go together. Nor does it make a difference whether the Rhodian child has learnt or not when the monstrous walls surrounding it were built, as to him this is his home, and fairy tales are timeless. This child doesn’t need to go to Disneyland to live his fairy tale. As today bows and arrows exist only in picture books, boys use slingshots they carve themselves, provided they have found the right furcate branch and an old piece of tyre from their neighbourhood’s bicycle repairman. During their Sunday walk, their father shows them the seaside fortresses and where the knights’ galleons docked. The most daring kids do not hesitate to sneak in mouldy, spider-ridden basements and others lose their way in the labyrinth of dark, damp sewage tunnels that form a chaotic web beneath the city, as intricate as the alleys aboveground brimming with tourists and loud music spouting from restaurants and bars every summer. A dark, silent and mysterious world exists right beneath their feet. They run in cobble-stoned alleys first paved in times of

knights, over six hundred years ago. They slip and fall, yet they feel no pain as the surface is now smooth as silk after countless steps and wooden carriage-wheels have crossed them throughout the centuries. Their school trips take them to ancient stadiums, where they sit on the same ancient rocks some other children sat over two thousand years ago wearing chitons and leather sandals instead of sport shoes and Nike or Adidas tracksuits. They run around ancient marble columns that still stand after so many hostile attacks, earthquakes and bombings. They watch theatrical plays in theatres built inside the wide moat surrounding the walls; some kids may even live in houses maintained intact since medieval times and can boast to their friends that once, their home was the residence of a mighty knight. The knight might have actually existed, or may just be a figment of a child’s imagination, yet still not that far from the truth. In the same backyard where their mother hangs their clothes in the sun to dry, it is not unlikely that a knight once practised with his bow or spear along with his sergeant to keep ready for battle at all times, as the island’s foes where many. On the wall by the entrance door where they are now hanging their coats and schoolbags, there once used to be an iron hook for hanging the knight’s armour and helmet. Some of the trees are not as old as the homes and the streets, but they still cast their cooling shadows when the weather is really warm. From their windows they face churches from times of great Byzantine emperors, and during the Mass on religious feasts they are surrounded by candle-smoked wall paintings created by famous Hagiographers (icon painters).

Born in Rhodes, Titsa Pipinou lived and studied for a while in England. She returned to Rhodes and has been living there ever since. Her first appearance in Greek Letters was made in 1994. She has written and published 10 novels, while her short stories have been presented in anthologies, literary diaries, newspapers and magazines and have been translated in German and Czech.

“Princess Sun Hotel opened in 1999 as the first step of H Hotels’ development policy” Alexia explains. “In the beginning, it consisted of 80 rooms, which gradually increased to 146, and today we feature a total of 214 rooms and suites”. Some of them even come twice in the same season. TALKS ABOUT RHODIAN GASTRONOMY Rodos Princess' Executive Chef Chef Manolis Kontos is the longest-working chef of H Hotels Collection. Born and raised in Rhodes Island, in the neighbouring village of Lardos, he is the most suitable person to talk about the culinary philosophy of the Collection and the gastronomy of Rhodes. “I have been employed by the Hatzilazarou Group for the past eight years, and I am in charge of Rodos Princess’ all food and beverage venues. We constantly upgrade the services of our restaurants and bars, adopting fresh and innovative concepts. We never rest or settle. The Greek and Italian cuisines inspire our set menus. We dedicate themed nights to ethnic cuisines like Mexican. Our show-cooking stations and the BBQ are the highlights”. How could someone stay on top of all these venues? “Patience, persistence and good collaboration with everyone are crucial prerequisites for an executive chef. I supervise everything. The biggest challenge is to ensure harmony among the staff”. The difference of working with H Hotels Collection is that we feel like members of one big family and that is reflected in the way we cook. We prepare every dish and snack with the same care and love as we would at home. The difference though, is in the high quality of the ingredients we use. We work closely with local producers, use as many local vegetables, fruit, meat and olive oil as we can. We don’t use frozen potatoes, for example. A local farmer supplies all our potatoes”. OUT OF THE ORDINARY! A hypnotizing Indian wedding immersed in the aethereal blue of Rhodes! A love story unfolding in a dreamy multiday event. Natasha and Deepak exchanged vows of everlasting love and devotion in a wedding we were truly proud to host! Let us take a closer look at their wedding, just one of the amazing events that H Hotels Collection takes great pride in. Photos by Magdalene Kourti. Blending Indian traditions under the Rhodian sun. On May 24 2014, Natasha and Deepak, an adorable couple from the U.K. chose Princess Andriana Resort & Spa for their entire wedding celebration. A traditional Indian wedding that was planned in its entirety by the expert wedding team of H Hotels Collection. Everything about this wedding was organised to the last detail; from all official paperwork to every single formality concerning the nuptials, we made sure that the loving couple had nothing to do other than have fun and enjoy their special days, together with their beloved guests. Soon after the 80 guests arrived and settled in their rooms and suites, the party began; A civil ceremony was held on 22 May 2014 at the veranda of Boutique 5 only for the family circle, and their traditional wedding ceremony was on 24 May 2014. As the bride and groom were getting ready in their suites, a small event was held in the Princess Andriana veranda for the parents of the bride to welcome the groom and his family. Then, they headed to the beachfront, where a beautiful gazebo in traditional ceremonial colours of the Indian culture hosted their spectacular wedding; the décor matched the bride’s family’s pink and the groom’s violet ensembles, the bride looked ecstatic in her intricate six-kilo sari, the Indian drummer set the tone, whereas the family priest was also present to officiate. The reception that concluded the wedding was held in Moonlight Restaurant with unforgettable festivities, superb dishes specially prepared by our chefs that blew everyone away, and a spectacular firework show. As for their amazing honeymoon, all that we can say is that it was at Princess Andriana Resort & Spa, so it was definitely fantastic! May you live a long and happy life together Natasha and Deepak!

DESIGNING WITH PASSION Delta Architects, Tatiana Kouppa and Nikos Papapanousis, collaborated with H Hotels Collection over the last decade. We met to discuss furthermore about this long-standing cooperation, as well as what makes every H Hotels Collection establishment architecturally unique.

Ms Kouppa, tell us a few words about your architectural firm and its course to this day. Our firm is characterized by our great love for architecture, it is full of inspiration and passion. Each project we undertake aims to the best aesthetic and functional result. We never rest, we constantly push our limits in design, and we see each new project as an exploration of a new world. Our specialty is designing hotels and dining establishments for large corporations, as well as luxury homes.

How did you come to work with H Hotels Collection and when? Which of their projects have you worked on? We started working with H Hotels Collection in 2007,

I will never forget, when we were building the area surrounding the pool, I looked at my partner and asked him: “Nikos, what are we doing here? How will this space be any interesting?” and he answered with absolute confidence in our intended transformation of the space: “we are the ones to shape each space, creating the environment we want”. Then came the renovation of Rodos Princess Beach Hotel & Spa, but what topped it all up was Mayia Exclusive Resort & Spa, a narrative of architectural experiences and interior design. We wanted to put all our inspiration and imagination in this project, with care for detail and

adapted to the parameters of functionality that designing a hotel of this scale entails. The challenge in designing and constructing is to first weigh all the parameters and the cost of planning and building, and taking all the right decisions for optimal results, without compromising on quality. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a constant juggling, an exercise for the mind.

Our firm is always looking ahead. Our dream is to evolve architecture in terms of detail and design. We wish to further develop the product that is design hotels of all sizes, ranging from boutique hotels to grand resorts. Each of our projects is a challenge for us to do better, to go beyond imagination, but always keeping in mind optimal functionality and the specific demands of our customer.

Yes, in recent years we have seen developments in architecture, with extraordinary examples that can easily compete with international architectural firms, as they include a sense of scale and design flexibility, with elements of locality, and our history and culture.

Rhodes is a beautiful island, with adequate prospects for creating new hotel establishments, but always with respect to the natural environment. They must be fully integrated to their surroundings, and natural materials must be used.

All H Hotels Collection resorts have adopted an integrated recycling policy that includes recycling of all plastic, glass, aluminum and paper items, as well as batteries and electronic devices. We constantly evaluate our practices, our environmental consciousness and social awareness enforcing our commitment to protect the environment.

Our chefs’ pride and joy, the botanical gardens of Princess Andriana Resort & Spa and Boutique 5 Hotel & Spa, are not just eco-friendly and beautiful. This refreshing spot of greenery serves also as the source of fresh herbs for our restaurants’ dishes. Isn’t it true that “Fresh is Best”?

Reducing Plastic Straws

In November 2018, all H Hotels Collection staff along with volunteers from all around the island participated in a tree-planting campaign on the hills around Kiotari, as a small gesture to restore the amazing landscape and ensure future benefits for the environment.

Our single-use plastic reduction policy brought a significant change in 2018. After a trial period of eliminating plastic straws from all H Hotels (offering straws only when requested), we recorded a 40% cutback to the overall use of single-use plastic. We are currently looking for sufficient reusable or naturally compostable options in order to eliminate all single-use plastic from our Collection.

Environmental Management System In compliance with the specifications of our ISO14001 Environmental Management System, and focusing on our ecological awareness, we make sure to carefully select our suppliers, opting for paper and cleaning products with eco-friendly certifications.

Environment Day Beach CleanUp Every year the World Environment Day is celebrated on 5 June. On that very day the H-Hotels staff and volunteering guests spend the day cleaning the beaches in front of our hotels. Four beaches are cleaned during the day, a small gesture to thank and preserve our natural surroundings.

EU Blue Flags All five beaches in front of our resorts have been awarded with the EU Blue Flag, the most recognized eco label for beaches. The Blue Flag Award certifies that strict criteria are met concerning high environmental and quality standards: crystal clear waters, clean beaches, safety and access for all.

ighting design is an integral part of any ar-chitectural vision, and in 1989 it was this fundamental principle that inspired a group of designers, engineers and architects to create IFI, Greece’s first lighting design stu-dio. Thirty years and hundreds of projects later, IFI has expanded, with offices in Cyprus and the United Arab Emirates. Today, it provides services to architects and consultants all over the world and has won many awards. Its impressive and varied portfolio includes projects of every size: from luxury hotels, restaurants and retail spaces to landscape design and residential architecture.

ANAGNOSTAKIS AND ASSOCIATES AT WORK

Expert knowhow covering every facet of lighting -- including the technologies involved, industrial design concepts, energy efficiency and aesthetic results -- allows IFI to handle each project comprehensively, from the early stages of the study to the final execution, producing results that go far beyond meeting technical requirements. “We aim to create spaces where people don’t just live but also thrive,” says Georgios Anagnos-takis, the company’s chief executive officer and a graduate in architecture from the National Technical University of Athens, with a Master’s degree from ETH Zurich. “We’re focused on the architectural design concept, but we also try to add an artistic element, so as to create memorable nightscapes.” The firm’s Research and Development department is widely ac-knowledged as the most comprehensive of its kind in Greece. Apart from designing lighting units for mass production do-mestically and abroad, it also creates custom-made units for the projects undertaken by the company. It offers a vertical process that begins with the initial concept and includes the design and production of prototypes, as well as documenta-tion and certification for the final product where applicable. IFI is a member of the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) and, in addition to European guidelines, also follows the stand-ards set out in the IESNA Lighting Handbook 10th edition.
