Letters from the publishers Spring is the season of new growth. It is the time where plants begin to sprout and flowers begin to bloom. Our fashion goes from the blacks and grays to the colorful. Outside of just being the time of year, the definition of spring is “to be released from a constrained position” applies to life in an exciting way. By now your New Years resolutions are in full swing. You have either made some gains, having a tough time keeping to them, or have already thrown them out as a lost cause. But how often do we look outwardly to help us through this time of year? Have you found that inspirational women, like Paulina (page 8) who decided her life long dream should happen now? Have you also read about those new adventures gone wrong (Dating Gone Wrong, page 10), and found a way to laugh with them? Have you looked for new ways to take the steps towards your goals that keep them attainable (Spring Back on Track, page 5)? Of course not, because life continues to happen around you and priorities become blurred. Well, we decided to give you some of these moments in which we all can relate. Now is the time to “spring into action”. In 2011, you are a priority, and Spring is a wonderful time of year to rise above it all!

Funny Women Stories
Have you ever asked your child a question too many times? My threeyear-old son had a lot of problems with potty training and I was on him constantly. One day we stopped at Taco Bell for a quick lunch in between errands. It was very busy, with a full dining room. While enjoying my taco, I smelled something funny, so of course I checked my seven-month-old daughter, and she was clean. Then I realized that Danny had not asked to go potty in a while. I asked him if he needed to go, and he said “No”. I kept thinking “Oh Lord, that child has had an accident, and I don’t have any clean clothes with me.” Then I said, “Danny, are you SURE you didn’t have an accident?” “No,” he replied. I just KNEW that he must have had an accident, because the smell was getting worse. So, I asked one more time, “Danny, did you have an accident?” This time he jumped up, yanked down his pants, bent over, spread his cheeks and yelled “SEE MOM, IT’S JUST FARTS!!” While 30 people nearly choked to death on their tacos laughing, he calmly pulled up his pants and sat down.

I walked into a hair salon with my husband and three kids in tow and asked loudly, “How much do you charge for a shampoo and a blow job?” I turned around and walked back out and never went back. My husband didn’t say a word... he knew better. I was at the golf store comparing different kinds of golf balls. I was unhappy with the women’s type I had been using. After browsing for several minutes, I was approached by one of the good-looking gentlemen who works at the store. He asked if he could help me. Without thinking, I looked at him and said, “I think I like playing with men’s balls.” My sister and I were at the mall and passed by a store that sold a variety of candy and nuts. As we were looking at the display case, the boy behind the counter asked if we needed any help. I replied, “No, I’m just looking at your nuts.” My sister started to laugh hysterically. The boy grinned, and I turned beet-red and walked away. To this day, my sister has never let me forget.

hey say the journey of a thousand miles starts with the first step. Little did I know I took this first step 23 years ago. The first time I had ever stepped into a gym! I loved the way it made me feel inside and out so I quickly became hooked. It became my way of life. Little did I know back then that my journey to becoming an NGA Figure Champion and Pro would somehow start with a chance encounter with a stranger. I moved to South Florida in 1992 leaving my family, friends and the cold of Rochester, New York in my rear-view mirror. I met my husband here, started a family and today have 2 beautiful children. I am by all accounts, a very blessed woman. Last summer, I had the privilege of planning my 25th high school reunion. During my layover at JFK airport, I felt a stranger staring at me. Quickly, she approached me to ask me if I competed because she said I had the most incredible physique she had ever seen. She told me her story about turning 40. She challenged herself physically and competed in her first Figure Bodybuilding show. Secretly, I had always dreamed of it, but I lacked the confidence. I thought; I’m 43, a mother, a wife… How could I? Never in a million years was it possible. But, that chance encounter inspired me so much that I could not stop thinking about it. I thought about it so much that I was starting to believe that maybe I could actually do it. I started working out like a “MANIAC”, 7 days a week no less than 3 hours a day! It was the hardest thing I have ever

done in my life. Some days I was in the gym at 4:00 in the morning then back again in the evening! I hired a nationally recognized IFBB Figure Pro in the industry, Miss Ava Cowan to fine-tune my diet, workouts and my stage presence. I was full speed ahead! On November 13th, 2010 my life’s dream had finally come true. I entered my first competition. I won 1st Place Figure Novice and 1st Place Figure Masters. I was also awarded my “Pro Card” which allows me to compete professionally in the industry. I still cannot believe it.

I’ve Gained More Than I Lost By Sandy Oswald
T
his spring I will be entering into my 40s and I am not where I thought I would be at this stage of my life. Surprisingly, I am in a much better place. As I look forward to celebrating turning 40, I am a stronger woman physically, emotionally, and spiritually. I can say that with confidence now, but it took several years to get to this point where I am truly happy in a life I did not chose to lead; as a single mom of three beautiful children. Four years ago, my marriage of over 12 years came to a screeching halt. When I walked down the aisle on my wedding day in front of my family and friends, the thought never crossed my mind that my marriage would only be temporary. I was utterly devastated to learn that no matter how hard I tried my marriage was over and my idea of a perfect family would be shattered into pieces. All I could do was cry. A friend told me that when the sadness was too much to bare, to get on my knees and pray. I prayed endlessly for the physical pain of heartache to end. Anyone who has gone through a heart wrenching divorce understands the pain and panic that you feel every day. At the time, my children were very young and I remember curling up with them at night just to feel close to something. Luckily, I had my children, family, and friends to keep me busy and keep me moving forward. Movement was my first step to a new direction in life. With so much on my mind, I needed an outlet to try to clear my mind. So, just like Forest Gump, I began to run! At first, I could only run a mile at a snail’s pace, but I enjoyed it because it was the first thing that I did for myself. Before I even ran 5 miles, I set a goal to run a half marathon. The pure joy I get from listening to music and running is hard to explain, but if you ever seen me running down Forest Hill Boulevard dancing while I’m running, you’ll get the idea. I have learned that setting physical goals is challenging and rewarding because my success is dependent upon one person: me. Running led me to try other things and to hire a trainer to further challenge myself physically. My biggest accomplishments have been racing in a marathon, half marathons, mud and trail runs, and a triathlon. In my future, I will be crossing the finish line in an Ironman race. As an added blessing; running, biking, and Crossfit have introduced me to so many wonderful people. While running got me physically healthy, my family and friends supported my emotional recovery. They have watched my tears turn to sheer joy and laughter. What would we do in this world if we didn’t have compassionate and loving friends to surround

ourselves with during the ups and downs of life? I know I would have crumbled. There have been so many friends who have touched my heart with the small things they did like listen to me, wipe my tears, watch my children, pray, dance on tables with me, send their husbands over to trim trees and do handiwork, share glasses of wine, run through mud with me and every night text me to say good night. It may take a village to raise a child, but it definitely takes a group of women with the biggest hearts to help a friend get through a divorce. For such a long time, I felt a void because I wasn’t in a relationship. As I looked around at the circle of friends that surround me, I realized that they have as individuals and as a collective whole filled that void in my life. I may not have that “one man” in my life right now but I have something so much better; family and friends that have given me their unconditional love. My new path was strengthened by physical goals and supported by friends and family, but a large part of my new inner peace has come from my renewed faith. When my husband left, I began to go to church, desperate to find the answers that I needed. I found peace of mind and heart. I used to joke with my friends that I never would go to bible study or talk about the Bible. To my surprise I do, and it brings me such joy.

think it is important to learn from those challenges; to grow and shape the person that we are truly meant to be. I have wanted to share my story for a long time, and I keep a journal that reminds me how far I have come since the day that my parents flew down from New Jersey to help me because I felt like I was walking around in a fog laden with anxiety and sadness. I share my experience because I also know that there are women who are going through what I went through. I wanted to give others hope that in the darkness the sun does shine through and the future is so bright that you need sunglasses to see it.

I met a really funny guy who did stand up comedy. We went for drinks one weekend and he asked me out I was having a late dinner and again for the following weekend. We went to dinner and drinks at this guys house I’d been dating for a few months when he received a phone call. He had a very nice time. The next morning he called & asked said he had a stomachache and left the house to go me to meet him for breakfast, so I did. At breakfast I told to CVS. HE NEVER CAME BACK! He left me in his him I was going to take my dog to the dog park. He house overnight. I was so worried I called hospitals and the said he’d join me with his dog. I went home to get police to see if anybody had been in an accident near by. Buddy.... never heard from the guy again! Suddenly, I remembered he told me his ex-girlfriend from NJ had moved here and lived in the next community over. Long story short, I drove over there around 5 a.m. and low and behold I found his car!!! He broke up with me later that day! Unbelieveable right?!

about yourself or your life.” On Fridays, I get together with my women’s bible study group to learn from the bible and each other. We are thankful that we were put in each other’s lives for reasons that are far greater than we can understand. Being a part of a group of women who pray for each other has been one of the greatest outcomes of my divorce. There are still some rough days. But, I no longer have the sense of panic and sadness I once had. My thoughts and emotions are filled with contentment for what I have and excitement for what is yet to come. I believe I wouldn’t be able to feel this without my relationship with God. Life takes us on a journey that was not promised to be easy. However, when we have to go over several bumps in the road, I
My favorite quote that I read once states, “No one is in control of your happiness but you; therefore, you have the power to change anything about yourself or your life.” It’s true. We are in charge of our own life, no one else. I have found that it is important to constantly remind ourselves of all the positive things that we have. Happiness has to come from within and everything else is a beautiful added bonus. The smile that is on my face is because I am happy with who I am and where I am in my life. So, watch out Fabulous 40s because here I come!
I have a funny story.....I went on a 2nd date with a guy, and we went back to his house. He had this huge set of drapes above the coach, and I sat down on his couch, not realizing the curtains were hanging slightly over the couch. Needless to say, I sat on them and ripped the whole 7 ft panel, rods and all, out of the wall....then I started laughing uncontrollably and he didn’t think it was funny! That was our last date.

Is Your Fat Activating Your Killer Genes?
Ten Trusty Testing Tips
Sasson Moulavi, M.D., LMCC, ABBM
by Michelle Regnerus, MEd & Mary Rawson, MEd
Most students will be taking some form of standardized test this
spring. Below you will find ten trusty tips to ensure a stress free testing season.
1.
Start early bedtimes after Spring Break to ensure at least 8-10 hours of sleep per night, even on the weekends.
2.
Provide children with well-balanced meals and healthy snacks to enhance energy levels and reduce sugar intake to keep the brain functioning at its peak. Taking vitamins regularly can also boost the immune system.
3. 4. 6. 7.
Talk to your child about test anxiety. Explain that the purpose of the test is to “show what you know”. Provide positive reinforcement so they do their best and are prepared. Remind them to believe in themselves and to not compare themselves to others. Encourage basic relaxation techniques: deep breathing, stretching and positive thoughts.
Review strategies your child has learned at school. These may include: read all the directions, eliminate choices with “any, always, never, none”, double check you are marking the correct # for the corresponding question, answer every question, read the entire question and all answer choices, ask yourself “does it make sense?”
12 | Fabulous 40rties | Spring 2011
The manifestation of killer genes include plaque on arteries, diabetes, elevated cholesterol and increased inflammation, all of which lead to an early death.
Patients that make this change say that not only do they lose weight but they feel better, have more energy and are happier. Biochemically they show less oxidative changes, a key to slowing down aging. I have worked with many patients who actually have reversed diabetes and stopped the progression of heart disease.
The good news is that it is reversible, but requires a change in eating behavior and in certain cases medication.
8.
Have some family fun nights and include critical thinking games. Completion of jigsaw puzzles, Sudoku, crossword puzzles, and other strategy games will help prepare children for increased focusing and enduring the full testing time.
5.
Physicians can measure a drop in many of these negative attributes by controlling certain components in the blood such as C-reactive protein, oxidized LDL, insulin levels and many more.
Your blood stream needs only 1 teaspoon of sugar at any one time. Most convenience foods are high in refined carbohydrates and sugar. By eating these foods you overwhelm your bloodstream which creates havoc and starts the “Killer Gene Process”.
Encourage at least 30 minutes of daily exercise such as bike riding, walking (the dog), or organized sports. A healthy body leads to a healthy mind.
Implement some family reading time where children can read to parents, siblings can read to each other, or everyone can read independently. Reading can include the newspaper, comic books, magazines, school newsletters or any other reading material.
As a weight loss doctor, I read many articles about fat and its effect on your body. Recently I am noticing more articles about the fact that certain foods that are high in sugar and toxins may turn on “killer genes” designed to kill us so we do not pass on poor genetic material to the next generation. It is nature’s way of saying “This person is not fit, he can’t get good quality food, he probably won’t be able to feed himself or his family, let’s knock him off.” Boom - Heart attack.
9.
The night before testing, set your alarm to wake up 15 minutes early and prepare for the following morning. If you have backpacks and lunches ready, it will be less to worry about in the morning. Arriving to school early can help the day start off on the right track.
On the day of testing, be sure your child wears comfortable clothing. It is recommended that they have a jacket or sweater in case the room is cool. Also, be sure your child has a high protein breakfast and include a healthy snack for them to eat during a testing break.
10.
Plan some extra fun activities for the testing days. Your child will have to sit for an extended amount of time and will need to release some extra energy after school.
Eating green leafy vegetables, preferably organic, is a great start, but small multiple meals that are balanced in protein, good carbohydrates and the right fats is key for the long-term success. Another part of this equation is controlling insulin and Leptin (a hormone that may be a signal to the brain that there is fat on the body).
If you put your mind to it, you can lose 5% to 10% of your body weight in one month, which will reduce your risk for many diseases by 50%. Over 80% of my patients achieve this goal. You can too!
No Bones About It It is a devastating illness that causes bones to become so brittle that they break easily. It usually affects women and generally occurs around the time of menopause. It’s called osteoporosis. Several factors determine who is at high-risk: Age: Bones can become less dense and weaker as one ages. Gender: Women are four times more likely than men to get this disease. Race: Caucasian and Asian women appear to be at greater risk. Lifestyle Choices: Smoking, heavy drinking and lack of exercise contribute to the onset of osteoporosis. Body Type: Small boned and thinner women are more susceptible. Many people think that a diet rich in dairy products can cure or prevent osteoporosis. Yet, the pasteurizing and homogenizing of milk products, changes the calcium into a form difficult for the body to use. Worse, because of the antibiotics used, dairy products have been linked to other health problems, including heart disease, obesity and cancer. These are safer sources of calcium without getting a “white mustache.” These vegetable sources include most dark green vegetables, especially collard greens, broccoli and kale.

How to Stimulate Desire When Stress, Kids & Work Interfere by MAUREEN WHELIHAN MD
A
sk any mother of small children what her “to do” list looks like for the day and I can assure you that satisfying her lover is not there. Between getting the kids ready in the morning, working a full time job and maintaining a busy household, little time is left for romance…so she thinks. It is not surprising that this 28-40 year old group does not think about sex, as they are constantly multi-tasking and working on the next project. The last thing the stressed out, fatigued woman wants to hear is, “Are we gonna do it today?” Perhaps it is followed up with, “We haven’t done it in over a week!” Neither comment will get you sex, so you might as well stop there. It is important to remember that males can still function despite returning home from work up-tight with stress and aggravation. In fact Sex for Men is a stress reliever while stress for Women requires stress relief. So let’s go over a plan to bring your tired, stress-out lady back to her erotic self:
1. HE will pick any two nights of the week and must come
home from work and assume all children duties, such as, feed them, clean up the kitchen, put away the toys, bathe the babies and do homework with the children.
2. SHE will leave the house and choose one of these options:

• Go to the gym and exercise as women are often self-
conscious about their weight and the stress-relief from cardio and weightlifting stimulates the endorphins. • Go for a manicure and pedicure as the massaging of these areas is relaxing and relieves stress. Nice nails are always sexy. • Go read a sexy novel and have a glass of wine, any Sandra Brown novel will do. This stimulates sexy thoughts and the wine relaxes and reduces inhibitions. Don’t drink the bottle!
3. SHE will return home at the designated hour and agree to an intimate encounter.
Not surprisingly, this works well almost all of the time because SHE is so turned-on by the fact that he did all of those things just to have sex with her. Secondly, HE often exclaims as they climb into bed, “I’m exhausted” which validates the hard work she does. This is a homework assignment that would work in any given week. An additional tip would be to have a “date night” on a Friday or Saturday where the kids can stay over at a friend’s or at Grandma’s and you can have a sensual evening together with a light dinner, candles everywhere and no rush or concern for kids barging in. Try this the next time and see how easily it brings the sensuality back into the relationship. Dr. Whelihan has a practice in West Palm Beach. She graduated AOA from the University of South Florida College of Medicine and began developing her interest and expertise in sexual health and wellness during her residency at the University of Florida Shands Jacksonville. As she worked with a wide variety of patients, Dr. Whelihan found that most of them desired to have great sex, no matter what their age, but sometimes that was difficult for them to achieve. Why do we crave sweets? Women who usually suffer from PMS are the women who usually crave those delicious sweets and treats. Due to the hormonal changes during PMS, our serotonin level drops causing us to crave the carbohydrates and sugar. When we give into our sweet cravings, it makes our blood sugar spike, intensifying these mood swings linking it to depression, anxiety, aggression and increased appetite. Carbohydrates and sugar increase our serotonin level making us feel happy and content at the time, but is actually making things worse in the long run. We end up with an emotional roller coaster effect. To keep cravings at bay, eat fruits high in protein, lots of fiber and healthy fats. It takes your body more time to break down these foods helping keep your blood sugar in balance.

Pregnant for the First Time at 40rty By Patricia Granata Eisner
I
f you would have told me when I was in my twenties that I would be having my first baby at 40 years old, I would never have believed it was possible. And here I am in my sixth month of pregnancy, round and paused to start a new life with a baby girl, and yes 40 years old. I was one of those girls who had a steady boyfriend throughout college and got engaged to him in my early 20’s. In my mind I was well on my way to marriage, babies and all that I had put on my list of to-dos in life. But life changed, and he wasn’t the man for me and the few who came after him were not either. But in the meantime I did a lot of things. Got two masters degrees, bought a house, changed careers and found a complete happiness and confidence in myself that made me perfectly ready for the man I did marry at age 36. I got every bit of being single out of my system and now at 40 appreciate my life and the turns it has taken more than I would have were they to have come to me at 25. The hardest part about waiting for the right person to share my life with, was the realization that like most of my friends, sister and peers, having a baby didn’t come quickly or easily for us when I finally did meet my now husband. We tried for four years and our road was long and hard. Like many women I have an infertility story that seems to have lasted forever. Since we were well aware of our ages and what might be ahead of us we began trying immediately after our wedding. In six months we knew that we needed to seek help from professionals. Three years of drugs, procedures and
18 | Fabulous 40rties | Spring 2011
nothing to show for it but a lot of heartbreak and frustration took us down the path of adoption. We thought that because there were more aspects that we could control the process would be somewhat easier. However, last year instead of celebrating our anniversary in November we were dealing with a failed adoption; the birth parents took the baby back 24 hours after they decided to give him to my husband and me. Once again the pitfalls of wanting to be parents smacked us right in the face. We decided to switch our focus and put in an application for an international adoption. By March our paperwork for two children under 24 months from Ethiopia was complete. And our wait began. Once again the road that I thought would lead to the fulfilled dreams of my life was paved with many stops and starts, but with my husband’s constant support, and what I now believe was close to forty years of life experience, I was making the best of it. In the months preceding my 40th birthday last July I set out
I am grateful for every kick and say things to myself like “you waited 40 years to feel this sick. Be grateful.”
to improve my health and overall state of mind. I got selfish with what I wanted to focus on and put aside my longing to be a mother. I decided why waste my life wanting something that wasn’t in my control while I could enjoy the life I had. I also wanted to wake up on the morning of my 40th birthday and feel fabulous. I began acupuncture, a daily boot camp at 5:30 am, cut out sugar, coffee, and anything processed. I got at least 8 hours of sleep a night and basically spoiled myself with good living. I felt fantastic and yes on my 40th birthday I woke up on a vacation of a lifetime in Lake Como with my husband and had not one regret, at all. And despite running away from what was a long time dream and filling it with lots of good living, I still had that same nagging feeling to be a mother, sooner rather than later. I shared with my husband that I wanted to try the entire process one more time. I found a new doctor and did one more IVF (invitro fertilization) treatment. This time I was prepared for the drugs and all that was about to take over my body. My mind was in a better state. Perhaps, the wisdom of 40 years was with me. And it worked. Right out of the gate. First try. I am due with a baby girl this spring. I often wonder how differently I may be approaching this because I am older. I have heard from many people, “Older mothers are just so much more mature. You have so much experience on which to draw.” Or “You make your decisions quickly and trust your gut much more when you are older.”

For so long I had no idea how my infertility story would end. I had no idea that I would be where I am now. In retrospect, I am grateful and believe that every stone I had to overturn to get here has made the wait that much more worthwhile. Besides with all the gorgeous, smart and accomplished women out there who have paved the path for me by having babies well into their forties I have a lot of great role models upon which to draw inspiration.

5 Household tips 2
1
Office depot binder clips can be used as clips for chips or other bags and much cheaper than the plastic ones you buy at the store that break. You can get 8 or 10 for $2.00. I use them for chips and even bags of frozen veggies, etc.

Panty liners can be used inside your shoes to absorb sweat.
When hanging pictures on wall, put a dab of lipstick on the hook so when it touches the wall it leaves a mark and you know where to hammer nail or hook in.
You know all the little discount key chain cards you get from CVS, Walgreens, Pet Store, etc , well keep a separate key chain with just all of these mini cards on them and keep in your car.
Do not use aerosols in bathroom to get rid of stinky smells as they are toxic to you and the environment. Instead, keep matches in the bathroom (hidden from young children of course) and light a match, immediately blowing it out and the stinky smell is gone and you do not end up with flowered poop smell.
Spring Gardening By Joseph F. Schober
S
pring is the time of year when many of us start thinking about sprucing up our yards by adding a little color with flowering plants. Flowering bushes or bushes with colorful foliage require a lot less maintenance than flowers. Dwarf forms grow at a flower’s height and are widely available. I would recommend a combination of flowers and bushes. If you like gardening, then puttering around the garden all spring and summer can be enjoyable; even therapeutic. To others, it is down right drudgery. You need to ask yourself if you plan on being in the garden 2 or 3 times a week weeding, trimming, etc., or hardly be there at all, but still have a nice garden that neighbors will envy. Here are some suggestions for those who do not have nor want a green thumb.
1.
Keep it simple! Choose small strategic areas for your plants/ flowers. Place them where they will be noticed the most. Less is better. Installing too many plants/flowers may look good at first, but as the plants grow a larger than planned maintenance project will result.
2.
Add plants that are native to South Florida. These plants require less watering and are more resistant to pests. You will be surprised to find many species of native plants that either flower throughout the spring and summer or have colorful foliage. Once again, remember that less is better. Do not overplant!
20 | Fabulous 40rties | Spring 2011
3.
When installing new plants/flowers always add good soil and every 2 months or so use fertilizer. Any garden center will provide information on the types needed for the flowers/plants you have. (Most soils in Florida are sandy and, therefore, do not retain water or fertilizer well.) When everything is planted, the important final task is – add lots of mulch (cypress or other wood chips is best). This not only adds beauty to the planted beds but it also holds in moisture and keeps weeds at bay.
4.
Now, for the final touch. Place one to three unique or unusual large pots (an odd number is always better) planted with flowers near the front entrance of your home. This will add another point of interest to your garden, plus they are easier to maintain/ water. With a little planning, you can have a garden to be proud of and still have time to shop and relax! Florida living. Isn’t it great!
3F’s of Being “Green”
The 3F’s of Being Green... (Frugal, Fun & Fabulous)
Home Made Cleaning Solutions: Nontoxic recipes for effective cleaners. Furniture Polish: Mix 1 teaspoon of lemon juice in 1 pint of mineral or vegetable oil. Apply a small amount to a clean cotton cloth and wipe wooden parts of furniture. Rug Deodorizer: Deodorize dry carpets by sprinkling liberally with baking soda. Wait at least 15 minutes and vacuum. Repeat if necessary. Mothballs: Use cedar chips or a sachet with any or all of the following: lavender flowers, rosemary, mint, white peppercorns. Whitening Scouring Powder: Combine 1 cup baking soda, 2 teaspoons cream of tartar, 1/8 cup borax, 1/4 cup grated lemon, orange or grapefruit peel and mix well. Scrub using a damp sponge. Glass Cleaner: Combine 1 1/2 cups vinegar, 1/2 cup water and 8 drops citrus essential oil in a spray bottle and shake well. Spray and wipe with a dry cloth or towel. A surprising number of the most harmful toxins ever created are found right in our own backyard — indeed, right inside your mop closet. Here are ways you can detoxify your home, make it safe again, and keep it that way by avoiding a few key chemical cleaning products.
These warnings apply only to a product’s immediate health effects; they don’t illuminate what happens when we use them over a long period of time. If you’re using common household cleaning products, you’re likely to encounter the following chemicals (among many others), and the following effects, while cleaning:
The air in our homes is filled with fumes from petrochemical solvents added to cleaners to dissolve dirt. The average household contains anywhere from three to 25 gallons of toxic materials, most of which are in cleaners. No law requires manufacturers of cleaning products to list ingredients on their labels or to test their products for safety. It’s up to you to make sure your home is not only clean, but also nontoxic.
•
Unfortunately, it isn’t easy to identify which products contain these hazardous ingredients. While cleaners are the only household products regulated by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission under the Federal Hazardous Substances Labeling Act, their sellers aren’t required to reveal these products’ ingredients. These ingredients are considered “trade secrets,” so government regulations are actually designed to protect this proprietary information, not to protect human health or the environment. When it comes to cleaners, the consumer has little to go on beyond the warning labels that manufacturers are required to put on their products. The labels DANGER, WARNING and POISON give only a very general idea about the seriousness of the unknown substances a product contains. In fact, a New York Poison Control Center study found that 85 percent of product warning labels are inadequate.
Chlorinated phenols found in toilet bowl cleaners are toxic to respiratory and circulatory systems. • Diethylene glycol found in window cleaners depresses the nervous system. • Phenols found in disinfectants are toxic to respiratory and circulatory systems. • Nonylphenol ethoxylate, a common surfactant (detergent) found in laundry detergents and all-purpose cleaners, is banned in Europe; it has been shown to biodegradeslowly into even more toxic compounds. • Formaldehyde found in spray and wick deodorizers is a respiratory irritant and suspected carcinogen. • Petroleum solvents in floor cleaners damage mucous membranes. • Perchloroethylene, a spot remover, causes liver and kidney damage. • Butyl cellosolve, common in all-purpose, window and other types of cleaners, damages bone marrow, the nervous system, kidneys and the liver. The list could fill a book. And it’s a book that would include thousands of other chemicals — some so dangerous that they’re found on lists of chemicals associated with Superfund toxic waste sites and in the toxins section of the U.S. Clean Air and Water Acts. Dental Advice & Tips By Dr. Botwin By Carmen Rosas An interest in the topic of bullying has grown in recent years as a result of bullying having become more and more of a widespread problem in our society that has led to serious violence both in and out of schools. According to the National Association of School Psychologists (1993), bullying is the most common form of violence in our society and is associated with school drop-out, poor psychosocial adjustment, criminal activity, and other negative longterm consequences. A bully is someone who repeatedly hurts or intimidates others intentionally either physically, verbally, emotionally, or socially over a period of time. It is not considered bullying when teasing is done in a friendly and playful way or when two persons of equal strength or power fight or argue. In order for it to be considered bullying, there has to be an imbalance of power. Bullying can occur in several different forms: • Physical aggression: abuse, pushing, shoving, kicking, spitting, tripping, destroying property • Verbal aggression: harassment, name-calling, threats, mocking • Emotional: intimidation • Social alienation: gossip, spreading rumors, slander, ethnic or racial slurs, excluding, humiliating, cyberbullying There is no one cause of bullying, however, some common reasons why people may bully may be to get attention, become popular, for power – to get what they want, to feel more important or fit in, to act out problems at home, to copy someone they admire, or to take it out on another person because they’re unhappy or scared. Some “hot spots” where bullying occurs in schools include: hallways, courtyard, bathrooms, cafeteria, bus, classroom, locker room, and athletic fields. Examples can include taking someone’s seat on bus; stealing lunch money; excluding from conversation; calling someone names; group shunning; pulling shorts down (“pantsing”); hiding a backpack or other belonging; making fun of the way someone talks or dresses; teasing someone because they have a hard time learning; using racial slurs; making comments based on sexual orientation; threatening; and spreading rumors. While we usually consider bullying among young people to occur mostly in schools and by other young people, it’s important to note that bullying among young people can also occur in families, after school clubs, sporting or recreational

activities. It can be quite common to hear parents and spectators at children’s sporting events yelling out hurtful or derogatory comments from the sidelines. Children look to adults for guidance and acceptable behavior, but sometimes, whether unconsciously or not, adults do not set a good example for how to treat each other. When children experience putdowns, intimidation, humiliation, criticism, physical punishment, or witness malicious gossip, intolerance, and other negative messages, they learn to believe these behaviors are acceptable. As a society we must recognize that bullying isn’t just “kids being kids”. Bullying is not just a part of growing up, but rather a growing problem that must be stopped. Each one of us can play a key role in supporting our youth. Here are some ways we can each be part of the “solution” in helping to prevent or stop bullying that may be occurring: • • • • • •
Model empathy and tolerance for others, regardless of race, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, political views, socioeconomic background, appearance, etc. Manage our own angry reactions to our children’s misbehaviors and use alternatives to physical punishment, such as removal of privileges or time out for ourselves. Discuss with our children inappropriate or antisocial and aggressive messages heard or seen in the media, i.e. television, radio, video games, etc.. Find healthy ways to express frustration, stress, and anger that do not hurt ourselves or others. Use conflict resolution strategies to resolve problems and encourage “win-win” solutions. Provide positive feedback and focus on others’ strengths and assets.
We could blame bullying on the media, ineffective schools, poor parenting, technology, or any combination of these, however, if we want to see real change, we must first look within ourselves and take personal responsibility and action. Only then can we make a real difference in fighting the potentially damaging effects of bullying. As Mahatma Gandi said, “Be the change you want to see in the world.” Carmen Rosas has been a school counselor for the last 14 years, working at both the elementary and secondary level, as well as a district guidance coordinator. She is also the mother of three kids Gum Disease and the Fabulous Forties
Gum Disease Just another item to our list of worries as we hit our forties: wrinkles, eyesight, gray hair, the gravitational pull on our tatas and booties and now Gum Disease! Periodontitis can affect anyone. Caused by genetics or environmental factors; it is a manageable disease. That’s good news, especially for those of us facing hormonal changes in our lives due to pregnancies, peri-menopause and menopause. Some people are born without the immunity to a particular bacterium that affects gums. This genetic problem can result in early tooth loss. Environmental factors such as smoking, excessive alcohol, minimal dental care, poor oral hygiene and other systemic diseases can cause or accelerate periodontal disease. Although bone loss is not reversible, the health of the gums can be restored and maintained with proper and diligent oral care. Any tooth loss can be replaced with dental implants. An initial visit to your general dentist will include full mouth radiographs, periodontal probing and a teeth/gum examination. A periodontal probing is a simple measurement with a tiny “gum ruler” that gives your dentist a lot of information as to whether you have gingivitis or bone loss. If your gum disease is mild, you may just need a good dental cleaning. If your radiographs and periodontal measurements are significant, you may be referred to a periodontist for further evauation and treatment options. While the bone loss around teeth cannot be reversed, it can be maintained for many years with proper oral hygiene home care and committed professional dental care.

5 Tax Traps for Entrepreneurs by Marc-Andre Boisseau
While tax laws change frequently these days, there are some
tax traps that manage to survive that can have large financial consequences for entrepreneurs who are at the early stage of their business cycle. Let’s go over a few basic tax traps: #1: Track the resources you use for business purposes Most entrepreneurs, to a certain extent don’t care whether they use personal resources to help the company, they will provide for it as much as they can. The main problem is that they do not track or segregate how much personal assets they are investing (e.g., cash, use of automobile, personal credit card) from the business resources. Because of this a lot of business deductions are not used. Following these easy steps will start you in the right
direction: 1. open a business bank account 2. Obtain a separate credit card 3. Keep a monthly car log for business purposes. #2: Lack of general knowledge of deductions There are more than 400 deductions for business and selfemployed individuals. It’s not cost or time efficient to sit down with your CPA to go over all of them every time you incur such expenses. There are many simple tools available, such as a really easy book called “422 Tax Deductions for Businesses and SelfEmployed Individuals” by Bernard Kamoroff. For less than $10, this gem is written to allow skipping to relevant items and helping to maximize business deductions. #3: Several tax deductions lead to unintended consequences Tax laws are full of credit and tax deductions that sound great but in reality may not be. For example, Work opportunity tax credit and Hire tax credit may lead to the hire and retention of otherwise less than stellar employees. Retirement planning may lead to locking in capital for long periods of time without the ability to withdraw such benefits without a supplemental excise tax and taxes resources away from working capital. There are too many examples to cover in this article. Bottom line; make taxes a secondary consideration to your business decision. #4: Beware of your choice of entity in which your business operates Same as #3, don’t just do it for tax purposes. There are many advantages and disadvantages to each form of entity, and not all of them are tax related. There are less administrative costs involved with a single-member LLC and many benefits touted for S Corporations. For example, several new clients heard that S Corp helps you save on FICA (the argument is that you don’t have to pay Social Security and Medicare taxes (FICA Taxes) on the S Corp profit. That may be true, but only if you don’t understate your salary. If you do, you may owe the FICA tax on the salary understatement plus interest and penalties.
24 | Fabulous 40rties | Spring 2011
#5: Consulting with your CPA Changes to tax laws come at a fast and furious pace, each Congress outdoing each other and with numerous IRS interpretations. With more than 18,000 pages, the US tax code is one of the most complex laws. Make sure your CPA or tax attorney doesn’t charge you by the phone call or by the page! Sometimes a 5 minute conversation saves you a lot of headaches down the road.
Loving the Alien By Flora Doone Children are so darn cute when they’re little. Every step, every stage, every phase of their lives is a magical moment. The first time they speak, walk, smile, laugh, play – everything is undeniably special. These beautiful babies of ours cuddle, coo and love unconditionally. Our own social lives begin to revolve around the child, their playmates and their playmates parents’. The world is just right. And then it happens. You watch them grow and suddenly an alien takes over the mind and body of who you once knew to be your perfect child, and you wish you could ship them off to Roswell. Maybe I’m being too harsh but the alien in my house has been secretly feeding on hormones, wreaking havoc on my 13 year old daughter. Once the transformation is complete, I’m told the alien goes back to its planet and in its place is a mature young woman. I’m wondering if I have the strength to wait it out or if I can build my own spaceship and take off for a while, only to return when it’s all over. In the meantime, said alien lives in my house, contorts its face to emote expressions never before seen, and thinks the words “clean your room” is prelude to a duel. The alien turns its nose up to foods it once loved and has replaced gourmet tastes with chocolate ice cream, spicy tortilla chips and as much fried food as it can get its hands on. Ketchup and chocolate topping seem to be the much needed fuel to survive. And then there’s conversation. Did I say conversation? Right, it’s nonexistent. That’s because we don’t speak the same language. I would offer the alien an instruction manual to take back to its planet. Maybe then it wouldn’t be necessary to visit ours and take over the minds and bodies of our youth. I’m talking about the manual everyone says should come with kids but doesn’t. It has to exist! Why else would everyone be talking about it? Have you seen one? I used to think of myself worldly and somewhat wise. I believed when I had a child I wouldn’t need a manual. I would be equipped to handle anything – after all, I too had a childhood and made it through adolescence. The truth is the alien doesn’t care to know anything I might have to say, simply because things are different now – at least that’s what she thinks. What the alien doesn’t know is this life form called “mom” has had her own experiences and knows her child will have similar ones along this
amazing journey called life. Sure she’ll stumble – that’s the sad part –we have to allow them to fall. Sometimes it’s hard knowing when the alien needs help learning all there is to learn. The art of arguing masks their weaknesses so well, making them appear stronger than they really are. We can’t help wanting to protect them, to soften the blows, to make it all right, only because we were once aliens ourselves. Flora Doone writes for teens and currently houses an alien in Boca Raton.

Losing The Thoughts That Keep The Weight On By: Odette Worrell Holistic Health Coach CHHC, AADP
We often think of becoming “light” in terms of physical weight, but the truth is that our thoughts are often at the crux of why we hold onto weight. How can we possibly expect to become lighter when our thoughts, actions and daily lives are so inundated with heaviness. “Taking the weight off” means more than just monitoring what you put in your mouth, it is also what you feed your mind, what you feed your life. When we shed the everpresent layers of stress we each contend with on a daily basis, and lose the negative thought patterns that weigh us down, we also lose the physical weight that is holding onto our bodies. You see, our thoughts have an effect on the chemical bond between hydrogen and oxygen, and our body is 85% of this. Therefore, every thought you think creates a biochemical reaction in your body that is measurable, and every cell in your body communicates with every other cell instantly. Your cells also interact with the cells of those around you. So, not only do you get weighed down by your thoughts, but your environment and those in it are equally affected. Knowing this, why not feed yourself the lightness and joy we all deserve? Why not shed the weight of the pressures that are nothing more than a thought we hold in our consciousness? Today is the perfect time to shift this pattern. Living here in South Florida, we have a tremendous opportunity to get outside and enjoy the sunshine – pretty much all year round. The sun reminds us that we too can bring lightness of being into our lives and radiate that sense of joy into our lives in all that we do. Joy increases serotonin, our “feel good” hormone. Pleasure is a powerful metabolizer that increases oxygenation and blood flow and decreases the production of cortisol and insulin, ultimately helping to burn fat and build muscle. When eating, 80% of our calorie- burning power, digestive power and assimilation of specific nutrients comes directly from the cephalic (“of the head”) phase of digestive responses. Simply put, the same part of our brain that turns on stress, turns it off. Conversely, the part of the brain that turns on the relaxation response turns on full, healthy digestion. Chronic stress can also increase the output of insulin, another hormone strongly associated with weight gain. The pancreas produces insulin whenever there is a rapid rise in blood sugar. One

of the ways that insulin lowers blood glucose is by telling the body to aggressively store excess dietary carbohydrates as fat. Insulin also signals the body not to release any stored fat. Additionally, when we eat too fast or fail to notice our food, the brain interprets this missed experience as hunger. It remains hungry because it was not satisfied. That is why we reach for more food. Consider the shift that can occur when we eat consciously and mindfully, and most importantly, without stress. Eating can actually raise endorphin levels. We are meant to enjoy this experience. The more endorphins, the more oxygen and blood released into your digestive tract and this means enhanced digestion. Pleasure, you see, is intrinsically designed to fuel metabolism. Knowing this, why not stop the stress and start living? Joy, or the feeling of being in a state of happiness, secretes nitric oxide. Nitric Oxide is a molecule that comes from the largest organ in your body located in your blood vessel called ‘endothelium’. This blood flow, or “chi”, also referred to in Chinese medicine as “life force”, is stimulated by the joy in your life. If you are still debating whether to embark on a path towards positive thinking…consider these facts:
• Did you know that research on nitric oxide, the chemical
which is produced when we experience joy, led to the creation of Viagra? • The good news is that you can increase nitric oxide simply by increasing positive thinking and setting an intention to invoke joy into your life... (without taking the little blue pill!) • Happiness is known to increase the production of DHEA, a hormone has great anti-aging effects for the entire body, such as increasing muscle mass, bone growth and fat burning, as well as improving memory and boosting the immune system. Happiness changes your metabolism, and allows you to take weight off more effectively. • Experiencing joy has been shown to enhance your immune system. So, how do we access this state of happiness? How do we begin to unravel the long-held beliefs and lifestyles that are often defined by time constraints, commitment, and stress? My belief is that it starts with an intention and commitment within yourself to begin living your life. It entails throwing away the limitations of what we think we must do, which is often defined in our minds as a sense of security. These very thoughts of emotional, financial and physical safety, and how to access this for ourselves and our families are the very thoughts that lead to the actions we take that keep us in a state of emotional “lockdown”. We literally imprison ourselves. A life of joy is not about avoiding pain, grief and sorrow. It is about learning how to dance in the rain rather than waiting for the storm to pass. It is about becoming light within our hearts, so that we can share that place of lightness with the ones we love, starting with ourselves. Baked Salmon w/ Cucumber Salad Cooking With Sugar by Arlene “Sugar” Cummings Baked Salmon is a simple, healthy dish and so easy to prepare in just minutes. I love pairing it with this cucumber salad because it gives this dish a great crunch and texture. We eat a lot of fish in my house and salmon, in particular is one fish that we have a few times a month. It’s high in omega fatty acids (very good for you) and tastes so good.
Ingredients For the Salmon:
Cauliflower Tabbouleh By Odette Worrell of Organic Soul
Cauliflower is one of those non-descript tasting veggies that can work well with many recipes because it simply takes on the flavor of what you cook/blend it with. Cauliflower, like most white foods, is full of beta-glutens which are powerful immune system boosters. Cauliflower also activates vitamin B cells and helps balance hormones! So...for those needing a little extra immune support and wanting the live enzymes provided from raw foods, try this dish.
Ingredients:
1 large head of cauliflower (or 2 small) 1 large bunch of parsley 1 large bunch of cilantro 1 small batch of mint 1 ½-2 cups of chopped tomatoes 1/4 cup of lemon juice (fresh-squeezed) 3/4 cups of olive oil 1 tsp salt ( to taste) Pine nuts (optional) Food processor
Directions:
Take the cauliflower florets and place them into your food processor. Pulse the cauliflower until you get something that looks like small grains of couscous. Depending on the size of your food processor, it helps to do the cauliflower in small batches so that you don’t over-process the florets into a liquid. pUt the cauliflower grains into bowl. Wash parsley and the cilantro, spin or pat dry, and then cut into small pieces. I use scissors for mine and hold the herbs in my hand while I cut away. Toss the herbs and the other ingredients into the bowl and toss well. You can place the salad into the refrigerator if you prefer tabbouleh cold or you can opt to eat it straight away.

6 salmon fillets about 1 ½ inches thick 3 tablespoons olive oil ¼ teaspoon of onion powder zest from 1 lemon ¼ cup plain bread crumbs salt and black pepper
For the Cucumber Salad:
1 cucumber, seeded and chopped into small chunks 3 green onions, all white and some of the green sliced fine 1 tablespoon fresh dill, chopped (you can use dried) 2 tablespoons sour cream or plain yogurt 1 garlic clove, chopped fine 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar ½ teaspoon sugar salt and black pepper to taste
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit Begin by making the cucumber salad. Combine all the ingredients in a bowl and mix well. Cover and place in the refrigerator until ready to serve. You are now ready to make the fish. Sprinkle a little olive oil on the bottom of a cookie sheet to prevent the salmon from sticking. Then lay the fillets down making sure they have room between them. Sprinkle with the remaining olive oil, salt, pepper, onion powder, lemon zest and bread crumbs. Place on the middle rack in the oven and bake for about 10-12 minutes. I generally bake fish fillets for about 10 minutes per inch of thickness. Once salmon is cooked, you can let it cool for a minute or so and serve with a dollop of cucumber salad on top. Enjoy!
40?
what is it about turning By Deena Buell
So what is it about approaching or turning 40? I’m noticing more and more women around me are different. More confident, more determined, and know what they want and don’t want. I feel like I am part of this special group that only women in this “group” understand. I notice these women seem to be “searching” for something. Whether it’s an old friend, the church they haven’t been to in a long time, a career they gave up when they got married or decided to start a family. Maybe what we are actually searching for is the person we once were before the marriage and or children. Maybe that person is gone and we want her back. I know when I turned 40 I started thinking differently, started prioritizing things and people in my life. Circumstances or incidents that would have angered me in the past just do not bother me as much anymore. Or is it that I now realize I can choose how things affect me? I just don’t have the extra energy to get mad at that person that cut me off on the road or cut me in line at the grocery store. Is it really worth getting mad at something we do not have control over? Women seem to be finally finding themselves in their 40’s. It’s almost like a “rebirth”. The children are growing up, some already in college or close to it. They are not as dependent on us and have social lives of their own. It’s sad and refreshing all at once. The positive aspect is this allows us a little more free time to do what we want to do whether it’s exercising, going back to school, having more girlfriend time, reading a book or just catching up on TV shows. Whatever you do, enjoy it without the motherly guilt we usually feel. Moms are people too and we deserve to have “me” time and not feel bad about it. I’m proud to be in my 40’s and I feel pretty good about myself. Sometimes however, I wish some of the lines on my face would disappear, or the skin on my body still had the same elasticity as it did even just 3 years ago. As we approach the 40’s, there are hormonal changes that affect our hair, skin, moods, eyes, sex drive, etc. that we just do not have control over. That stinks!!! How unfair!! Who the heck planned this out?! LOL! After all we do and go through as women; the least we deserve is to look good for more than 40 years. Right?! Where’s our payback after all these exhausting, energy draining years? It all starts with our menstrual cycle and hormonal changes at such a young age, then pregnancy with more hormonal changes, and childbirth with even more hormonal changes, raising children, drooping boobs and butts, being a taxi, maid, cook, referee, teacher, and the list goes on. I’m exhausted just typing it all! How the heck do we do it all? We really are special and need to treat ourselves like we are. So, from one 40 something to all you 40 something’s, get out there and do the things you love and enjoy without the guilt…..you have earned it 10 fold!!!
