A DIAMOND ANNIVERSARY
Brent Harden, the visionary behind 45 years of exquisite craftsmanship and unparalleled service at La Maison d’Or, inspects a stunning Canadian diamond ring, featuring a 4.35 carat Canadian diamond in bright 18 karat rose gold.
LA MAISON D’OR
A Shining Example of Longevity
“We have always stayed true to crafting the highest quality jewellery and providing the absolute best customer experience possible. That has carried us through.”
And how! This year, La Maison d’Or, one of Ottawa’s premiere jewellers, celebrates its 75th anniversary. 45 of those years have been spent in Ottawa, when the family-run enterprise moved from its native Hawkesbury to its current home in Orleans.
Brent Harden, the company’s second-generation President, grew up in the original store. After studying business at Carleton University, he acquired the acumen to take over the shop. That included the decision to relocate from Hawkesbury to the busier suburbs closer to Ottawa’s core.
BY DAN LALANDE PHOTOGRAPHY BY KERBENS BOISETTE“We felt that it was time to branch out and serve a new market,” explains Brent. “It was one of the best decisions we ever made. Ottawa quickly became our new home and has been very good to us ever since.”
Not to mention loyal. In the same way that the company is enjoying continuity—Brent now works alongside yet another generation, his daughter Jessica—people who purchased engagement rings from La Maison d’Or 50 years ago are showing up with their grandchildren to help pick out similar merchandise for them. “Approximately 60% of our trade is made up of returning clients from our existing customer base,” Brent tabulates. “The rest are new. It’s a very healthy mix of familiar and fresh faces!”
Both cohorts are attracted by La Maison d’Or’s distinctive approach to selection and evaluation. “Every diamond we carry is personally selected by me for beauty and value,” Brent explains proudly.
“With our American Gem Society accredited in-store gem lab, I’m able to evaluate diamonds carefully and accurately, ensuring that only the best of the best makes its way into our counters. It’s very unusual for a jewellery store owner to participate in these types of activities, but I’m committed to putting my personal seal of approval on each and every diamond.”
Brent has traveled the world scouting diamonds, from Antwerp to Las Vegas. His most exciting trip, however, took place right here on Canadian soil. In March, he ventured to Yellowknife to observe the workings of Ekati, Canada’s first diamond mine. Not only was he blown away by the quality of the stones, but he was equally impressed by the other opportunities being created by the mine.
“I learned so much about Canadian diamonds and the impact that they’re having on the community,” the still-reeling Brent recounts.
The mine has created hundreds of jobs for the local population, at some of the highest salaries a miner can earn. Further, 10% of the profits of all crystals go directly towards supporting the Indigenous Dene people. “It was one of the best trips of my entire life!” says Brent. “Truly inspirational!” As proof, La Maison d’Or has since partnered with the Natural Diamond Council in a mutual mission to promote the benefits of natural diamonds worldwide.
A DIAMOND ANNIVERSARY
La Maison d’Or is making a big splash at home, too.
Aside from expanding its aftercare services and offering free polishing on Saturdays, they’ve just re-painted and upgraded everything in their flagship location from their seating areas to their in-store café. “The response has been very positive,” Brent reports happily. “When clients are here, they feel like they’re at home.” Or at a house party: In conjunction with its dual anniversary, La Maison d’Or will be giving out 45 special dinners for two in partnership with Beckta, one of Ottawa’s most prestigious restaurant
groups. They have also designed special commemorative rings, made exclusively with Canadian diamonds, that they’ll be donating to local charitable organizations for fundraising purposes. And if that isn’t enough, the business is helping a handful of them, including Bruyère, the Montfort Foundation, and the Sens Foundation, to raise $200,000 in aid of the needier sectors of the community. “We want to give back to the community that has truly been like family to us over the years.”
Meanwhile, Brent, his daughter Jessica, manager Rita Elias, and the other members of La Maison d’Or’s equally knowledgeable
and personable team—including long-timers Tammy, Arpi, and Tracy and newbies Laura, Erica, and Amey— will continue to offer the selection, service, and ongoing product care that have helped Ottawans celebrate countless engagements, weddings, anniversaries, and big life moments.
“I am so thankful, from the bottom of my heart, to every single client who has come through our doors over the last 75 years. It has been such a privilege to be your trusted family jeweller for so many decades. Fine jewellery is our passion, and because of our clients, we get to come to work and live our dreams, every single day. Now, it is time to look forward to the next 75 years!”

6 New Trends That Will Dominate Spring 2024
Seasonal Sparkling Water
Pickleball
Pickleball has captivated people of all ages and fitness levels this year. The sport is a hybrid of tennis, badminton, and ping pong. It’s fastpaced, easily accessible, and addictive, and has grown from an afternoon activity at the neighbourhood tennis court to a juggernaut of leagues, tournaments, and levels.
Botany Sparkling
Water is a new take on soda - this black cherry and vanilla is made with real ingredients and no preservatives, and is a worthy opponent for your favourite colas.
Ultrahuman Fitness Monitoring
UltraHuman is the newest trend in personal fitness monitoring this season. The Ultrahuman Ring AIR ®. accurately measures your sleep, HRV, movement, and temperature, with insights to help you improve your health every day.
Subtle Lighting
is a major trend that will make its way outside this spring. Patios everywhere will brighten up with soft lighting in creative ways, like stair, shelving, and accent lights that are less direct and create a more intimate and relaxing feel.
Following on the waves of sugar-free seltzers and flavoured sparkling water is botanical sparkling water: herbal infusions that are sugar-free and all natural with a boost of botanical benefits. Brands like Botany are leading the charge to introduce fun and refreshing flavours to shelves this summer.
Immersive Experiences
Summer festivals and cities alike have one thing in common this summer: they know that immersive and interactive experiences are the key to tourism and attendance. Larger than life art installations and new ways of experiencing urban districts are on the rise.
Above Ground Pools
Above ground pools are making a comeback in a stylish way. Stone or framed pools, mostly square, give a serene, streamlined and contemporary look.
ALBERT NASSRALLAH
Photography by Sean SiskHe followed his dreams to Los Angeles, where he spent his early career in audition rooms, like most aspiring actors. It was a spontaneous decision to shave his head and change his look that proved pivotal; the Ottawa native began booking for roles, and found himself landing a career-defining part on Airbender: The Last Avatar.
We caught up with Albert to discuss his journey to acting, his experience as part of the Avatar Franchise, and his favourite things about coming home to Ottawa.
What was your childhood like?
It was definitely a cultural mishmash! I grew up with a Lebanese father and Vietnamese/French mother; both well travelled. They made a point to bring my sister and I on many trips when we were kids, to expose us and open our eyes to how vast and different the world is. My father also worked for Foreign Affairs, so when I was about 4 or 5 we spent a year in Brussels, Belgium. Ottawa was certainly on the more quiet side, and yes the winters are harsh (although I associate that with snow days, skating on the canal, and Beavertails!), but I think it was a great place to grow up. I have some fond memories and long lasting friendships.
How did you know that you wanted to pursue acting? Who were some of your biggest inspirations?
I always wanted to be an entertainer, even at a young age. My parents say I used to be a jokester–the clown of the family–and that some teachers would encourage them to consider steering me towards theatre because I was so at ease performing in front of people. My first recollection of performing is doing a show in fifth grade. I felt so alive! However, that idea was put on the back burner until much later in my life. The desire never went away though. I grew up watching Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, so Will Smith was definitely a huge influence for me. Even outside of that show, I’ve loved him from movies like MIB and Bad Boys, to The Pursuit of Happyness and Seven Pounds. Of course, many actors have been a source of inspiration throughout the years. Most recently, I would have to say Miles Teller.
Tell us about your journey to landing your first big role?
It took a while! I had been auditioning for a good five years before I finally started seeing a hint of hope. My friend and I would call it the curse. I just couldn’t catch a break. I always received the same feedback: ‘Yeah, he’s good… just wrong for the part.’ ‘He just doesn’t quite fit in.’ There seemed to be a disconnect between how my reps were marketing me, how I presented myself, and how casting perceived me. It wasn’t until I shaved my head, on a whim, that things started to align. Sometimes it takes something a little drastic to shake things up. It allowed me to finally book a gig on Supernatural, and things sort of snowballed from there.
Tell us about your experience filming for Avatar: The Last Airbender. What has it been like to be a part of this historic film franchise?
Being part of this series was so fulfilling! I have to admit that I had no idea how big this adaptation was going to be when I first booked the gig. After binge watching the anime I ended up becoming a huge fan. There were so many cool aspects to filming: having fight choreography and overall movement rehearsals, working with practical fire effects, the opportunity to have a small fight sequence next to Dallas Liu (Zuko), who’s an absolute badass at martial arts. Plus, I got to work alongside the amazing Paul Sun-Hyung Lee. I give him a lot of credit for giving me the space, support, and encouragement, to deliver what was required for this role. The feedback and love from fans has been overwhelming, in a good way. I could go on about the great things but suffice to say this show delivered a lot to remember, as well as a milestone for me: being able to attend a premiere and walk the red carpet.
What’s next for you?
I’ve actually been given the opportunity to step behind the camera and produce a production. It’s still in the very early stages of pre-production, so not much information to give out yet, but I’m excited for it! Producing and directing are definitely things I’ve wanted to explore, as I believe they create longevity in an actor’s career. This project will be a great stepping stone in that direction.
If you could choose three bucket list accomplishments you have for your career, what would they be?
1. Star in a James Bond movie. 2. Star in a Broadway play. 3. Have a production company and produce films with friends, like Adam Sandler but different genres.
When you come home to Ottawa, what are some of your favourite things to do and places to go?
For me, Ottawa is very much a pause from all the noise from the film industry, just keeping it low key with family and friends is all I need. It’s very grounding. Plus I make sure to get my fix of Shawarma Palace! Anyone from Ottawa will understand why; and for those who aren’t, just make sure you don’t miss it if you ever visit.
What’s your best advice for aspiring actors looking to follow in your footsteps?
Always remember why you set out to do this and be mindful of bitterness. Not everyone will attain success, or the level of success they may aspire to have, right away. Those are few and far between. The majority of actors are in a marathon, and bitterness can sometimes creep in when things aren’t going exactly the way they envisioned. Avoid comparing yourself to others, especially on social media. That can be pretty soul crushing. Find ways to stay passionate and keep learning new skills that could help you in your favourite genre. For example, get some fight training if you want to market yourself for action movies. Lastly, don’t stop living your life in fear of missing out.

OTTAWA SENATORS CENTRE
MARK
KASTELIC FINDS HIS GROOVE
By Steve Warne Photography by Chris Tanouyehen the Sens drafted him out of junior in 2019, Kastelic was a force, scoring 47 goals for the Calgary Hitmen. But since his draft day, the past five years have all been about adjusting to the pros – a journey from leading man to supporting cast member. And Kastelic looks like a man who’s begun to figure things out.
At 6-foot-4, 226 pounds, Kastelic was already one of the strongest, fastest players on the team. But in the second half of this past season in Ottawa, he really began showing up with authority, chipping in with more offence.
“I think all my experiences up until now prepared me for that position as a fourth line guy in the NHL,” Kastelic said.
FACES: What’s your general thought on how the season went in Ottawa?
KASTELIC: Yeah, it’s definitely been a little bit of a difficult year. Just thinking back to last season, it was really fun to be battling right down to the wire for a playoff spot. And obviously, I’m still just very thankful to be in this situation. But I don’t think it’s very easy for anybody involved. I think we’re all a little bit frustrated.
How would you describe your individual season?
I think it was an up and down season. After my high ankle sprain in November, that was a little bit of a learning curve. I’ve never been really injured that long in my career. And I think I kind of came back and started to find a little bit of a groove.
Your father, Ed Kastelic, played in the NHL too. Does he give you hockey advice?
Yeah, I talk to him all the time. The season is so long and you can have a lot of negativity coming in from all kinds of different areas. Both my parents are really great for helping me stay positive and believing in myself and staying confident in my abilities.
What was the coaching change like, going from D.J. Smith to Jacques Martin?
I think the biggest change is the little differences in philosophies. Personality wise, D.J was a pretty loud and energetic guy and Jacques is a little more quiet and reserved. In my opinion, they’re both great coaches in their own way. I’ve never experienced a coaching change in mid-season and I think when your new guy comes in, you want to just try to make a good first impression.
What are your early thoughts on the new owner, Michael Andlauer?
The thing I get is he just cares so much about us and the team and doing whatever he can to make sure that we’re provided with the best opportunity to perform. I have so much respect for him already and it’s been fun to see him come in with the passion he has. We spent some time with him on trips and team building activities and he’s fun to talk to. He’s just a very positive energy to have around.
While the playoffs weren’t in the cards for you guys this season, it really seems to be a closely-knit group that gets along great.
Yeah, I agree with that 100%. We’re a tight group and we’re all in the same age range pretty much, other than a few of the veteran guys. And that makes it pretty fun to come to the rink every day. And we have great leaders in there that bring everybody along with them.
If he continues on his current trajectory in Ottawa, Kastelic may one day find himself among those leaders.
Andrew Abraham Building Opportunity With The Capital Prosperity Foundation
Ottawa’s Andrew Abraham is the leading force behind TAAG Corporation, a multidisciplinary professional services firm that specializes in understanding the needs of small/ medium-sized businesses and family legacy.
TAAG’s mission–to help the hardworking, multi-generational businesses in Ottawa meet the challenges of tomorrow–is a reflection of his own upbringing in a small family business. Watching his father pour a lifetime’s work into his restaurant, Andrew learned the sacrifices made by small business owners, and more importantly, the role of family legacy amidst the daily toil. “I saw firsthand the work and dedication business owners invested in nurturing success within their families,” the charming and resolute entrepreneur reflects. Andrew’s experience as part of a multi-generational small business was the ignition for TAAG, which would offer a more personal, more familiar ally to families and businesses in Ottawa.
Understanding the values and experiences of his clients, Andrew landed on the concept of ‘prosperity’ as the firm’s guiding principle. “That’s our Big Idea,” he offers. “We believe that the true essence of prosperity hinges on the willingness of individuals and businesses within a community to contribute their resources and their time towards enhancing the overall well-being of everyone, especially those most in need.” When it was time for Andrew to define the company’s values in Corporate Social Responsibility, he once
again looked to his upbringing. Seeing the compassion his father had for the less fortunate in his community as a restaurant owner, the cause was clear; “No hunger amongst the most vulnerable in our city.”
And so, when Andrew and Bill Ayyad, COO at TAAG sat down with Dan Fried, President, and Kevin Darling, Chair of the Capital Integral Charitable Foundation in early 2024, they found an organization that completely aligned with the firm’s guiding principles. The charity had a portfolio of programs aimed at building prosperity in Ottawa through initiatives that tackled the issue of hunger–an instant synergy with Andrew and TAAG. With a new partnership underway, the foundation was rebranded to Capital Prosperity Foundation, “which reflects our commitment to improving the lives of children and families in the National Capital Region,” tells Andrew. “We all believe that true prosperity is about creating a positive ripple effect, supporting our neighbours and building a vibrant community.”
The newly rebranded foundation is fundraising through a host of programs, Andrew explains. “When you make a gift to Capital Prosperity Foundation, you’re investing in vital programs for vulnerable children and families in Ottawa. Your donation will go toward our Gift Card Program, Make A House A Home Program, and other initiatives that provide essential resources to children in need.”
Charitable tax receipts are provided to both individuals and corporate donors.
Reaching out to a financial advisor at TAAG can assist in making informed decisions about corporate donations, including understanding potential tax benefits.
Other ways of getting involved are through volunteering and attending future events. “Our future plans include hosting various events, raising even more funds to support programs like the Ottawa Network for Education (ONFE) School Breakfast Program.”

Choice Leadership Atorina Babaea’s
Allow me to offer a cliché: The power behind the throne. Now, allow me to adjust it: The power behind the chair.
By Dan Lalande | Photography by Nicolai GregoryThat’s in reference to Atorina Babaea, the artist and district leader behind the styling and grooming empire of the enterprising Phil Weaver. Weaver is the famous Ottawa entrepreneur who gave up a thirty-year career in high-tech to become the CEO of Oakview Management. Oakview oversees forty-nine salons across Eastern Ontario, under the auspices of four high-profile brands: First Choice Haircutters, Magicuts, SmartStyles, and the nascent Rooster’s Men’s Grooming.
A network of that size doesn’t run itself—nor can its details be looked after by a CEO who’s as busy as a beaver… er, Weaver. That’s where Babaea enters the picture, gracing it with her thorough professionalism, and deep, humanistic appreciation for First Choice Haircutter’s clientele.
For somebody so vested in the culture, it’s hard to believe that Babaea got involved in it as a necessity. “I didn’t know I wanted to pursue a career in the hair industry,” she confesses. “When my son was born in 1989 in Athens, I decided to take a course to help with my finances. I didn’t know it would be a long-term career, that I could keep growing in the industry.”
But grown she has, covering the busy bases of a team-based playing field. “Team leaders perform an important role in helping to manage groups of employees meet organizational goals,” she explains. “Team leads help to achieve many business objectives, including training, performance monitoring, and conflict resolution. Learning to be a strong leader supports the success of your co-workers and the company.”
“We operate over forty-five salons locally. We will continue to be a leader in the Ottawa area market offering a great place to work, well-trained and experienced stylists, and quality service.”
If anybody understands the daily pressures of today’s hard-working stylists, it’s Babaea. She spent a quarter century cutting hair. While she eventually felt the urge to climb the career ladder, she well remembers the purpose and pleasure of that job. “There’s something incredibly fulfilling about helping someone feel good and look good,” she maintains. “As a hairstylist, you have the opportunity to do this daily, whether you’re giving someone a confidence-boosting haircut or helping them prepare for a special occasion.”
It’s a palpable concern for the clients she has passed on to her charges ever since assuming First Choice’s Team Lead.
“Create a warm and inviting atmosphere from the moment a client steps into our salon,” she advises staffers. “Greet them with a genuine smile and provide a comfortable waiting area. Also, efficiently manage check-ins to minimize waiting time, ensuring a smooth transition into their pampering session.”
Babaea also makes sure that every employee is up on the latest industry trends and developments. For that, though, she has a little help: “Our stylists are trained several times a year,” she explains. “We have six senior design team trainers that work very hard to keep the training going.”
Babaea even offers guidance to industry wannabes, those looking to someday join First Choice’s reputable team. On the professional level, she encourages aspiring stylists to consider a career in cosmetology. Many of her employees are graduates of The Ottawa Westend Beauty Academy, which provides a hairdressing course that teaches the fundamentals required to successfully infiltrate this crowded industry. “They teach all of the services we offer in our salons,” Babaea affirms, adding unequivocally, “You will be set up for success.” On a more philosophical note, she recommends that aspirants investigate the true nature of their commitment. “Make sure that you truly want to focus on a career in the industry. There are successful people doing hair as a part-time job, but I like to hire people who look at it as a career.” That approach pays better, too. In contrast to their competitors, First Choice offers employees a guaranteed wage and attractive benefits.
It’s advice that again reflects the friendliness, professionalism, and vision that defines her and the franchise she represents. It’s an approach First Choice intends to keep firmly in place while it expands. Says Babaea, “We operate over forty-five salons locally. We will
continue to be a leader in the Ottawa area market offering a great place to work, welltrained and experienced stylists, and quality service.”
Whether you’re styling or leading, she warns, it’s a busy career—but if you have the right kind of personality, it’s a good one. “It comes easy if you’re a good person and genuinely care about people. You can always practice a bob shape or practice layers, but if you practice being kind to people every day, you can never go wrong.”
