At 23, Shane Pinto, centre for the Ottawa Senators, is set for a breakout season. After signing a two-year, $7.5 million contract, he’s ready to make a major impact in 2024-25.
A NEW CENTRE Star Emerges
Shane Pinto Is Ready for a Breakout Season
WXhat a difference a year can make.
This time last year, Shane Pinto had a couple of things on his mind, and neither of them was helping him prepare for his role as a star centre for the Ottawa Senators.
The 2023-24 NHL season was underway, and Pinto was still on the sidelines, entering his fifth month of waiting for a new contract from the team. To make matters worse, the NHL suspended Pinto for 41 games for “activities relating to sports wagering.” For the record, the league’s investigation found zero evidence that Pinto bet on NHL games, and the Senators supported him every step of the way.
Now, one year later, that’s all ancient history.
In July, Pinto signed his first big NHL contract—a two-year, $7.5 million deal—and followed it up with a full training camp and pre-season alongside his teammates. That’s quite a contrast to last year when Pinto missed training camp and didn’t play until January.
This season, almost as a signal of how well-prepared he is, Pinto had a hat trick against the Montreal Canadiens in the Sens’ final pre-season game.
With the 2024-25 regular season now underway, the sky’s the limit for Pinto, who turns 24 this month. He’s on track to be a major contributor, both offensively and defensively, and as a teammate, Pinto radiates positive energy, always smiling, and seems like someone who simply cannot wait for his next chance to laugh.
On the eve of the regular season, Faces had the opportunity to talk with Pinto about his journey to this point and his hopes for the new hockey season.
I’m guessing it’s safe to say the start of this season has been like night and day compared to last year?
“Yeah, definitely. Last year was obviously filled with a lot of emotion and distractions. This year, it’s just regular hockey again—no distractions, just playing the game. Definitely, this one’s better than last year.”
How was the off-season?
I think I had a productive summer, just working out and getting my body ready. Having a normal pre-season is nice to slowly build up my game and prepare for the regular season. As the pre-season went on, it got better and better. So, yeah, I’m happy with where I’m at.
It’s amazing to see you at the NHL level. I don’t imagine there are many players in the league who took up hockey as late as you did.
Yeah, my dad put me into football and baseball growing up. My town was mainly a football town, so that’s all we knew—football in the fall and baseball in the summer. At ten years old, my dad’s friend suggested we try hockey. I liked it a bit, but I didn’t really take it seriously until I was about 14 or 15. Once I got to prep school, I quit the other sports, and it just kind of took off from there. It’s wild how it worked out.
How did you catch up with the kids who had been playing at the top level for ten years longer than you?
I didn’t even think about any of that. I didn’t know any better. I was just playing, trying to get better every day. I didn’t really realize what was going on, and I think that was a good thing. My parents didn’t know much about it either; they just listened to some people and tried to guide me the best they could.
Tell us about your hometown of Franklin Square, New York.
I loved it. It provided me with an athletic background. I played a lot of football and baseball growing up. It wasn’t too hockey-driven, but I think that’s a good thing—it helped me become a better hockey player by being a good athlete first. It was a great place to grow up, and a lot of my good buddies are still back there.
Who do you thank most for helping you get to the NHL?
For me, it’s an easy question: it’s my parents (Frank and Catherine). When you’re younger, you don’t realize how much they sacrifice. As you get older, you start to understand how much they did for you, how much money they spent on me,
“
Once I got to prep school, I quit the other sports, and it just kind of took off from there. I didn’t think about how far behind I was—I just played, tried to get better every day, and it worked out.
“
and all the travel. They sacrificed a lot to put me in a good place, and I’m really thankful for them. They know that, but yeah, definitely my parents.
Your older sister, Brianna, was a fine athlete as well, right?
Yeah, she played softball at Fordham University in the Bronx. She’s a very good athlete—probably better than me. Growing up, that motivated me to be a better athlete because she was always more athletic than I was. She played Division I softball and has a school record in stolen bases. She was a very good athlete for sure.
Back to the Senators, there can’t be many teams in NHL history with four players who went to the same university. You, Jake Sanderson, Jacob Bernard-Docker, and Tyler Kleven were all at North Dakota together.
Yeah, it’s unheard of. I don’t think people realize it, but having three guys on the back end from the same team is pretty crazy. They’re obviously my good buddies, and we grew up together in North Dakota. I don’t take it for granted. Last year, we were in and out, but this is the first year we’re all in the Senators lineup at the same time. I think it’s super special and a credit to North Dakota and what kind of university it is.
What kinds of things do you like to do when you’re away from the rink?
Basically, I just hang out with my dog. I have a French bulldog that I got last year, so I just chill with him.
What’s his name?
Jett. I just hang out with him, walk him, and play with him. That’s all I really do. I also play some video games with my buddies back home—college football or NHL, so I’ll play that a little bit.
“In my opinion, we have enough to be a playoff team and make some noise. But it’s up to us—no excuses anymore.”
What’s the story on the new mustache? Is that the new look, full-time?
We’re going to take it one week at a time.
Have you given it a name?
No [laughs]. I’m not naming it yet. We’ll see how the first couple of games go. If they go well, I’ll keep it. If not, I’ll probably shave it off.
Finally, as we speak here on the eve of the regular season, what are your expectations for the Senators this season?
I know everyone talks about our additions—the veteran leadership and our core getting a little older. I think we’re maturing a bit more. I have a good feeling about it. Obviously, we need to start strong, but in my opinion, we have enough to be a playoff team and make some noise. But it’s up to us—no excuses anymore. Everyone’s in the lineup and healthy. Plus, we’ve got Linus Ullmark now, which is a huge addition. I think we need to make the playoffs, and hopefully, we can do that.
After overcoming last year’s challenges, including a suspension and contract uncertainty, Shane Pinto looks every bit like a man ready to make his mark in the NHL.

New CN Speed Limits Cause Via Rail Delays
Ottawa’s train routes on the Montreal-Windsor corridor face new, enduring delays now that CN has imposed speed restrictions on Via’s new Siemens trains at public crossings. The new rule has caused 30-minute delays per train. CN cites safety concerns tied to axle counts, requiring slower speeds unless more cars are added. However, Via notes these trainsets operated previously without issue or restrictions. While other rail operators like Metrolinx and Canadian Pacific Kansas City impose no such rules, Via is exploring solutions, including shunt enhancers, to prevent future delays. All 32 new trains will be operational by next summer.
Hot Wheels: Ottawa’s Most Stolen Cars in 2024
The Ottawa police’s recent report from Summer 2024 saw a surge in vehicle thefts, with Toyota and Land Rover models topping the list. The most stolen vehicles included the Toyota Tacoma, Tundra, RAV4, and 4Runner, along with the Ford F-150, Jeep Wrangler, Range Rover, and Land Rover Defender. With roughly 100 vehicles per month stolen, roughly half are recovered.
Toronto & Montreal Airports Are #1 & #2 In The World For Airport Delays
On a top 5 list recently posted by CNN Travel, YYZ and YUL took the top two spots for the most flight delays in the entire world. 51.9% of Toronto’s flights are delayed, mostly due to weather events, the study showed. Combined with recent staff shortages, it’s no surprise that Toronto has held this spot for the last three years. 47.8% of Montreal’s flights don’t leave on time, and this figure is largely due to weather events as well as the airport’s older infrastructure and capacity issues.
By comparison, JFK and Newark airports see roughly 28–35% of all flights delayed.

Davion Taylor, now with the Ottawa REDBLACKS, brings NFL experience and standout speed to the CFL after a journey shaped by resilience and faith.

TAYLOR MADE
Davion Taylor’s Unlikely Rise to NFL Stardom and His New Chapter with Ottawa in the CFL
Reaching the NFL as a starting linebacker is an impressive accomplishment, but doing so without high school football experience takes it to an entirely different level.
That’s how it was for Ottawa REDBLACKS linebacker Davion Taylor, who became a starter with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2021 despite playing a grand total of two games of football in high school.
Unfortunately, Taylor’s time as an NFL starter was cut short after just six games due to a serious knee injury. Now fully recovered, he has made his way to the nation’s capital, where he’s helped the REDBLACKS return to the CFL playoffs for the first time since 2018.
Taylor recently joined Faces to reflect on his journey from Magnolia, Mississippi, to the bright lights of pro football and the experiences that have shaped him into who he is today.
How would you describe your time in the city of Ottawa so far?
My time in Ottawa has been great! There are so many activities to do and experience, especially in the summer. There were festivals, concerts, soccer games, nature, and plenty of food. Poutine was one of the Canadian foods that has stood out to me. I’ve never had anything like it, and I love that you can try so many different types. I truly love the culture and everything that comes with the city, and I’m very glad I got to start my Canadian career here in Ottawa.
What was life like growing up in Magnolia, Mississippi? What do you remember most about childhood? And what was family life like?
Life growing up in Magnolia was great. It was my mother, brother, and me, and the house was filled with love. We lived in a small neighbourhood where we had a lot of kids our age to play outside with.
Why didn’t you play football in high school?
My mother wasn’t necessarily against me playing the sport of football. In fact, she hated that I had to sit out in high school. Growing up, our religion was a little different than others. We kept the Sabbath day, which, for us, started Friday when the sun goes down until Saturday when the sun goes down again. That 24-hour period was dedicated to God, and it was our day of rest. So I couldn’t play the Friday night games.
So, how did you manage to get an offer from the University of Colorado with so little playing experience?
Coahoma Community College was the only school that gave me an opportunity after they invited me to come to summer camp. I truly thought I wasn’t going to make it because I originally tried out as safety but was moved to linebacker and didn’t even know what the simplest things were.
Colorado came around after my first year at Coahoma. They were the first Power 5 offer I had during this process, and it was already something unimaginable, given my circumstances. I committed on the spot but wanted to finish my second year at the college to continue to hone my craft in the sport and also get my associate’s degree.
After my second year, I ended up being the #1 outside linebacker in the nation with plenty of Power 5 offers but decided to stay true and went to Colorado.
You started six games for the Philadelphia Eagles. Can you describe how well things were going at that point?
My second year in the NFL, I was eventually named a starter during the 2021 season. This time was one of the best of my career. Every week, I was getting better, and the game had truly slowed down for me. One of my best games was against the Denver Broncos, where I was back in Colorado and had two forced fumbles and a few big tackles. Before my injury, I truly believed that year I was going to become the force I always imagined.
“I would like to be remembered as a man who stayed humble but strived every day and night to achieve his dream.”
How did things change after that?
After my injury, I sadly missed the rest of that season, and it took over 3 months for me to feel whole again. The season after my injury, I came to training camp and had to prove I could still play. Training camp was going well until the preseason games came around. Even though my knee was physically healed, mentally, I was not. I found myself thinking about my knee during the game and not playing effectively.
This caused me to get cut and brought back on the practice squad, where I spent the rest of that year. The year after, I bounced around on practice squads across the league, and now I am here.
How has your first season with the REDBLACKS gone?
My time with the team has been nothing short of great. I’m grateful that I have teammates who not only want to succeed as individuals but also want to see the ones around them do the same. This team has all the pieces to be a championship team, and I am happy to have an opportunity to be a part of it.
70 years from now, how would you like people to remember Davion Taylor as a person?
I would like to be remembered as a man who stayed humble but strived every day and night to achieve his dream. A man of God who has had faith over the years, throughout the good and bad times in life. I also want to be known as someone who helped the youth every chance I had and tried to help bring about a better future.
Anything else you’d like our readers to know about Davion Taylor?
I am just glad to be able to share my story and let people know how I got to be where I am. Thankfulness and perseverance are just a couple of words that describe my journey. I truly hope that getting to know who I am encourages people in their own stories as well.

LA BOTTEGA Nicastro
From Transition To Tradition
By Dan Lalande
In the shadow of the original Byward Market building, before it was destroyed by fire in 1926, lived a lively lithograph of Irish and French bakers, soap makers, and fishmongers. One section, though, housed an Italian grocer: J. Saso and Son. Saso père (or Papa) liked to play frontman, inviting his largely immigrant clientele into animated conversation before his offspring Charles helped them stock up on breads, cheeses, wine, and other staples from their mutual homeland.
“We visit Italy regularly and maintain strong relationships with our suppliers,” explains Pat. “This allows us to import some of the finest food products this side of Rome. Plus, we carry many of our branded Nicastro Italian food products.”
Saso’s remained a family business and a neighbourhood crossroads into the 1990s. That’s when a pair of cousins from Ottawa’s most successful Italian food family, the Nicastros, took it over. Who better, the Sasos reasoned? The guys, Pat and Rocco Jr., were young but they checked all the boxes: they were Italian, from Ottawa, and knew the business, having been part of the family whose grocery stores and eateries dotted Little Italy and the West End. The guys themselves, though, weren’t as certain. They had a healthy respect for the authenticity, quality, and variety offered by the store, but the neighbourhood was in serious transition. “George Street was going through a lot at the time,” reflects the irrepressibly approachable Pat. “The ByWard Market was undergoing some controversial restructuring. But we took a risk and decided to go for it.”
The takeover took root after Pat mapped out plans for a modern version of the store as the climactic project for his Bachelor of Commerce degree. He called his detailed re-imagining - La Bottega, the name that hangs over the space’s entryway today.
Invited by the Sasos to make his dream a reality, together they sold off the place’s OId World fixtures, gutted the floors and walls, and built an epicurean Eden. Eleven years later, upon completion of his university education in Commerce, Rocco Jr. joined the family business.
Together Pat and Rocco Jr. are in charge of La Bottega Nicastro’s edible inventory. Its shelves are full of Italian food of all kinds: pasta in so many shapes and sizes, prosciutto right from Parma, fresh focaccia delivered daily, real deal Parmigiano Reggiano is sliced and sold daily. And in between, everything else: sauces, olives oils, pesto, pastries...
“We visit Italy regularly and maintain strong relationships with our suppliers,” explains Pat. “This allows us to import some of the finest food products this side of Rome. Plus, we carry many of our branded Nicastro Italian food products”—you know the ones, Ottawa; the famous family products sold in finer shops across the city and used in many of our restaurants. “That’s why La Bottega is a full Italian market.”
NICASTRO
“The one thing we haven’t changed is the incredible value we offer on Italian food.”
But La Bottega’s riches don’t end there. Over the past few years, Pat and Rocco have turned the far end of the store into an ad hoc Italian food court. Wind your way past the stacks of antipasto, sardines, and deli meats to find a full-service lunch and dinner restaurant, a takeout sandwich shop, and a quaint café. Many shoppers reward themselves with an espresso and a biscotti, settling in at one of the tables set up outside the entrance. There, you can often find Pat chatting up the regulars, in the happy, welcoming spirit that is La Bottega.
The café has proven so popular, the Nicastros have started to expand. There are now Nicastro cafés on Iris St. and in Gatineau, and one just opened at the Ottawa International Airport.
But the flagship store remains the family’s first distinction. “We’ve made a lot of changes over the last few years,” Pat elaborates. “We’ve added a wine shop, a full catering division, online shopping, and gift basket department. We’ve expanded our restaurant hours and offer local grocery delivery. The one thing we haven’t changed, though, is the incredible value we offer on Italian food. Customers remain confident that when they shop with us, they’re getting the best, most affordable Italian food products in the city.”
LAlong with the friendliest, most knowledgeable service. Pat and Rocco are in the store every day. So is the management team that’s part actual family: Giovanni Adamo, cheese connoisseur who’s been with La Bottega from the beginning, Alessandro Nicastro—and part honourary family: Larissa Beznaczuk-Smyrnew.
Next year, La Bottega will be commemorating its 30th anniversary. There’ll be an epic celebration and plenty of enticing in-store promotions. It’ll be Pat and Rocco’s way of saying “Grazie!” to the community that has kept an Italian food store viable in the sometimeschallenging ByWard Market for over a century. But really, it’s we Italian food lovers who should be raising a glass to them: “Salute!”

The Dream Life of Ottawa Olympian
Sam Zakutney
Zakutney
By Dan Lalande | Photography by Nicolai Gregory
Vault, parallel, horizontal, floor.
If you, like most of the country, were glued to the Olympics this past summer, you marveled at Ottawa’s own Sam Zakutney distinguishing himself at each of these demanding disciplines.
Your jaw likely dropped even more when you discovered how, due to a series of careerthreatening injuries, he almost missed his time in his sport’s biggest, brightest spotlight. Dreams are slippery things; for athletes, they can be as tough to hold as a Still Ring.
In 2021, Zakutney, one of the stars of the first Canadian Men’s artistic gymnastics team to go to the Olympics since 2008, suffered his first major setback when he tore his ACL. Then, in 2023, he damaged a pectoral muscle.
“The ACL tear affected me in every way possible,” Zakutney confesses. “It made me question if my goal was delusional. The recovery was very long. Nearly a full year of stretching, strengthening, walking… it never seemed to end.”
“Then, at the 2023 Pan Am Championships,
I felt a jolt and heard a pop. I got assessed by a doctor and I bawled on his shoulder. Still looking for a spot on the Canadian team, I thought my Olympic dream had ended.”
Within mere months, though, Zakutney had career-saving surgery, did a lot more rehab, and was cleared to hit the gym again. Told you dreams were tricky.
The Nepean-raised Zakutney was a restless kid obsessed with the neighbourhood monkey bars. His parents signed him up for gymnastic classes, where he discovered the trampoline. “Gymnastics made me feel superhuman,” he laughs. “I was not about to let that go.”
He didn’t. By the age of eight, he was competing in the National Capital program. He won event after event at both the provincial and national levels. He spent his high school years at the Ottawa Gymnastics Centre, where he developed a relationship with Oleksandr “Sasha” Zavadych, a former Ukrainian and Canadian Junior National Team Coach. Eventually, Zakutney was invited to represent Canada at the 2016 Olympic Test Event in Rio.
“When I landed, time froze. I looked at the crowd and beat my chest. I showed everyone who I am.”
But another part of him felt that he was shortchanging himself. Looking to make good on his facility for math and science, he opted to go to Penn State. There, he could pursue a degree in biomedical engineering while continuing to compete.
Zakutney became a four-time NCAA AllAmerican. He was the Big Ten freshman of the year for 2017, the 2019 Big Ten champion on parallel bars, and, in 2020, a finalist for college gymnastics’ highest honour: the Nissen-Emery Award.
After Penn, it was time to re-establish himself on home turf. In 2019, he swept the podium at the Canadian Championships. His Penn State teammates might not have been there to cheer him on, but the event was held in Ottawa: family and friends filled in.
That triumph could have proved a career climax. Not long after, the injuries began, threatening to rob Canada of what became a lasting memory on the international stage.
But by 2024, Zakutney was able to perform at the Canadian Championships, securing that much-vaunted spot on the first Canadian Olympic men’s artistic gymnastics team since 2008. “I made a full return to six events only a month before the championships,” Zakutney still marvels. “I knew I had given it everything I had. It was the show of a lifetime.”
SThat is, until the Olympics. There, despite the expected jitters, he helped the men’s team to an unprecedented 8th-place showing. “During qualification,” he recounts, “I don’t think had ever been more nervous in my life. But I accepted the odds and went into every performance with pride and confidence.”
While Zakutney was happy with his contribution, it wasn’t, by his own admission, the masterful performance he had given at the Canadian Nationals. When the team score came up a little shorter than expected, his heart stopped. In the end, though, Canada qualified.
“I had been given the chance to redeem myself,” Zakutney, who went on to perform admirably, gratefully recounts. And while he classifies those aforementioned Still Rings as the most difficult of his sport’s short routines, at the Olympics, it all came down to the pommel horse. “I finished the best I’ve ever done. When I landed, time froze. I looked at the crowd and beat my chest. I showed everyone who I am.”
But who might this proud Olympian be tomorrow?
His lifelong goal of being an Olympian behind him, it’s possible Zakutney will opt to follow in the footsteps of his father, the Senior VP of the Ottawa Heart Institute. Recently engaged, he might soon be planning a wedding.
But dreams, besides being tricky, tend to recur. “Who knows?” Zakutney speculates. “I might have another Olympics in me.”

An Ottawa Fixture The Electrical & Plumbing Store
The Electrical & Plumbing Store thrives as a family-run business, combining decades of expertise, high-quality products, and exceptional service to remain competitive in a shifting market.
If you’re an experienced contractor, a reputable renovator, a new homeowner, or an incurable do-it-yourselfer, odds are good you’re a regular at The Electrical & Plumbing Store.
Both locations, the original operation at 1080 Ogilvie Rd. and its Bell’s Corners counterpart at 31 Northside Rd., are the only facilities in the city that boast full, onsite lighting and plumbing showrooms. Each store is teeming with fixtures, flooring, furniture, and fans, selected to make your home or your passion project into a work of magazine cover art—not to mention reliably functional. And if you’re dealing with the tricky matter of setting up or renovating a bathroom, each EP Store (as insiders call it) features a professional contracting department guaranteed to complete the job to the highest standards.
The EP Store is a family business. “My father,”
current owner-operator Jim Sourges explains, “was a master electrician who operated his own electrical contracting company: Ottawa Valley Electric. In 1980, he decided that there was an opportunity to establish a retail store. My mother was the purchaser and did the administrative work.” Young as he was, Sourges worked there, too. “We were a typical family business. I remember coming in with my parents to work on Saturdays when I was 12 years old.”
After obtaining a degree in economics from Princeton in 1991, Sourges decided to perpetuate the family legacy. “I discovered that I wanted to stay in the family business,” he affirms. “It was the best fit for me. I had a passion for serving clients.”
“I went through a long learning process where my father was my primary mentor,” he continues. “I also learned a lot from the owners of many other local businesses as

The Electrical & Plumbing Store’s lighting section at their Bells Corners location offers an unrivaled selection, with hundreds of fixtures illuminating every corner.
“The only way to remain competitive is to make sure that our customers receive a combination of the lowest possible price and the highest level of service.”
Now, after thirty-plus years at the helm, Sourges has a legacy of his own—one that has weathered a lot of changes. “The market has changed in many ways. It went from mostly local stores with a few large chains to the addition of Big Box retailers. Then, there was the explosion of online competition.” But the company’s stayed strong. “The only way to remain competitive is to make sure that our customers receive a combination of the lowest possible price and the highest level of service,” says Sourges. “We focus on that every day.”
Expansion, though, has proven the company’s biggest challenge. “The construction of our Bells Corners location was a tremendous amount of work,” Sourges recounts. “I really stretched our human and financial resources. We were closed for a total of nine months from demolition to re-opening. My father and I, along with our staff, spent countless hours getting the store fit to open once the construction was completed.”
Stock selection was, and remains, key. The company keeps current with technological and decorative developments by attending yearly trade shows. There, Sourges and his co-workers scout and assess the latest products from the most reputable suppliers and integrate them into their showrooms.
The EP Store’s deep inventory of plumbing accessories includes bidets, faucets, and furniture in a variety of finishes. Their brand-name flooring includes clearance and overstock selections. And their bulbs, chandeliers, and directional lights come in styles from classy to casual.
While the company is well-established across the city, it never takes its good standing for granted. “As a second-generation owner of a family business,” Sourges explains, “there can be a tendency to take the previous success for granted and assume that customers will always come back just because you’ve been around for so long. But I remind myself every day that we need to give our customers a reason to shop with us every time they walk through the door or call either of our stores.”
Those reasons continue to be the ones his Greek immigrant parents established over four decades ago, when they accommodated their clientele’s requests for lighting and plumbing fixtures by expanding their specialty operation instead of making them crisscross the city: top quality products, helpful service, staying current.
It’s made the Electrical & Plumbing Store a success so far and may well for years to come. Sourges is grooming his son, Nick, to take over the business, the same way that his father groomed him. His top piece of advice? “There’s no guarantee of long-term success in any business,” he declares. “If you want a chance
Oyster Etiquette: A Crash Course
Indulging in oysters is an art, and mastering proper etiquette ensures you savor every briny bite with sophistication.
Oyster Basics
Know Your Oysters: East Coast oysters are typically brinier and smaller, while West Coast varieties tend to be sweeter with a deeper cup. A good oyster smells like the ocean—fresh, briny, and clean. If it has a strong, off-putting odor, it’s likely bad. Check the shell too: it should be tightly closed or snap shut when tapped. An oyster that stays open or has dry, shriveled meat inside is unsafe to eat and should be discarded immediately.
Respect the Liquor: The briny liquid inside the shell, known as “liquor,” enhances the oyster’s natural flavor. Avoid draining it—sip it gently for the full experience.
Tools & Techniques
Use the Right Tools: The small fork provided is essential for loosening the oyster. Make sure the meat is detached before slurping to avoid awkward moments.
The Graceful Slurp: Tilt the shell to your lips and sip the oyster delicately. Slurping is part of the experience—just keep it refined and avoid exaggerated sounds.
Enhancing The Experience
Condiments, Sparingly: While lemon, mignonette, and hot sauce are common additions, try your first oyster plain to appreciate its unique flavor. Too many toppings can overpower the taste.
Pair with Care: Light wines, champagne, or crisp beers complement oysters best. Stronger drinks may overwhelm the delicate flavors.
At The Table
Discard Shells Properly: Place finished shells face down on the tray or plate to keep things neat. Avoid piling them awkwardly—it’s a subtle sign of respect for your host or chef.
Asking About Oysters: It’s perfectly acceptable to ask where your oysters are from— many chefs and oyster bars appreciate curious diners. If an oyster smells off, tastes unpleasant, or has an open shell, politely send it back. Quality establishments understand the importance of serving only fresh oysters and will replace them without hesitation.

MERLIN DOOR SYSTEMS DONATES $150,000 TO THE BRUYÈRE HEALTH FOUNDATION
Merlin Door Systems has long stood as a reliable name in Ottawa’s commercial, institutional, and industrial sectors. Known for its extensive inventory of frames, doors, and related hardware, Merlin consistently supports the community it serves—and now, the company has extended its reach into healthcare by donating over $150,000 to the Bruyère Health Foundation.
This generous contribution reflects the company’s commitment to giving back. “Our stake in this is personal,” explains Tom Warford, Merlin’s Co-Owner and Vice President. “We all know someone who has needed medical care, and our entire team takes pride in knowing we’re making a tangible impact.”
The donation will provide essential medical equipment, including three bariatric beds, four ventilators, and an ultrasound exam table. These resources will benefit patients directly and ease the workload of frontline staff caring for patients in the areas of aging, rehabilitation and for those with multiple complex medical conditions.
Russell Grass, founder of Merlin Door Systems and Waterdon Construction, describes how philanthropy has become integral to the company’s identity. “It started with a personal experience when my wife was treated for breast cancer at the Civic Hospital in 2014,” Russell shares. “After her treatment, the surgeon mentioned their plans for a new breast cancer clinic and asked for our support. That was the beginning of our involvement in healthcare projects.”

Merlin’s recent contribution is the latest in a long tradition of supporting Ottawa’s health and social service providers. The company’s culture of giving back is woven into its day-to-day operations, with thankyou letters, plaques, and emails displayed prominently at the office to remind employees of the positive impact they help create.
Tom emphasizes the importance of community involvement for businesses. “Even a small contribution can have a significant impact. We hope that our support encourages other businesses to get involved, identify causes that resonate with them, and make a difference where it matters most.”
While Merlin Door Systems has built a legacy through landmarks across Ottawa, its focus on community well-being illustrates how businesses can extend their influence beyond their core operations. “We believe in building a stronger, healthier community by investing in essential healthcare services,” Russell says. “When we come together, our collective efforts can create meaningful change.”
“We believe in building a stronger, healthier community by investing in essential healthcare services and resources. When we come together and pool our efforts, we amplify our impact and ensure that vital support reaches those who need it most.”
The partnership between Merlin Door Systems and Bruyère Health embodies this philosophy, making healthcare improvements that will resonate far beyond the immediate future. As Russell puts it, “Together, we can transform lives and foster a spirit of collaboration that strengthens our community.”

A ‘Smart’ Man AURA DESIGN Stephane Doucet of
By Dan Lalande | Photography by Nicolai Gregory
“Our clients are individuals who love staying ahead with the latest technology and gadgets,” explains Doucet. “They seek to enhance their living spaces with audio, video, and smart devices for convenience, security, and energy efficiency.”
When it comes to people accounting for their calling, you often hear about the moment when “the light went on.” For Stephane Doucet of Aura Design, that light was automated. “When I first transitioned from sales to home automation,” Doucet explains, retracing the formative steps of his career path, “I was immediately struck by the transformative potential of the technology: the seamless integration and the impact of convenience.”
The New Brunswick-born Doucet is a proud graduate of Ottawa’s La Cité Collégiale. He studied Computer Programming, learning the foundational languages used in the development and integration of smart home applications. His post-graduate career in sales led to a consultancy for the Stereo Plus Group. There, he was tasked with providing smart home support for the entire franchise—the perfect opportunity to put his collegially-
grown talents to work. In 2018, Doucet left to form Aura Design, Ottawa’s leading authority on customized, cutting-edge, and convenient living.
“The ability to optimize home systems to meet individual needs and preferences presented endless possibilities,” the still-passionate Doucet recalls. “I wanted to be part of an industry that was not only innovative but also had the potential to improve people’s lives in meaningful ways.”
Doucet and his team have done just that, helping techsavvy Ottawans invest in high-end home technology solutions by leading brands like Control4 and Lutron. “Our clients are individuals who love staying ahead with the latest technology and gadgets,” explains Doucet. “They seek to enhance their living spaces with audio, video, and smart devices for convenience, security, and energy efficiency.”
Left: Andrew Davies and Stephane Doucet connect over a shared vision of bringing cutting-edge home automation solutions to Ottawa. Together, they help clients elevate their homes with technologies that offer more than just convenience.
Below: Inside Aura Design’s immersive Orleans showroom—where innovative technology meets luxury living.
That means that Doucet and his team have to keep on their toes. “The smart home industry is evolving rapidly,” Doucet explains. “Enhanced communication between devices, such as wireless mesh networking and advanced protocols, is making homes more interconnected. There are also innovations in home entertainment, with ultra-large 4K and 8K TVs being better integrated into smart home systems. Small speakers are getting significant upgrades, too, offering high-quality sound in compact designs. Smart lighting systems are allowing for personalized lighting experiences, while smart thermostats and heating systems are improving energy efficiency. Additionally, smart home security systems are becoming more advanced.”
That’s a lot to consider. That’s why homeowners, architects, designers, and builders rely on Aura Design to offer a comprehensive experience, from consultation, design, and budgeting to installation, testing, and support. The installation team, in fact, is renowned for its meticulous attention to detail, while the follow-up team will be available 24/7 starting in the second quarter of 2025. “Aura Design thrives on face-to-face interactions,” says Doucet, “where we answer questions and provide personalized care.” That said, the company is also holding its own online.
To experience the same style epiphany that inspired Doucet to devote his life to the provision of “smart living,” you can book an appointment to visit Aura Design’s legendary showroom in Orleans. The room offers an immersive, hands-on education, allowing prospective clients to explore the full range of Control4’s and Lutron’s capabilities: home theater systems, 4K TVs, high-end audio, smart lighting, climate control, Wi-Fi networking, security camera solutions, and more. Explains Doucet, “It helps demystify the technology and demonstrates its practical benefits.”
AIn the future, there’ll be more—much more. Aura Design is in the process of expanding its already sizable product line. New industry developments include automated window treatments, coverings that can be controlled remotely via smartphone app or an Alexa or Google assistant. They can be programmed to open and close at specific times or in response to shifts in environmental conditions.
The company also has a bead on such coming innovations as home robotics and various AI-based technologies.
And don’t go thinking that this mode of living is just for moneyed people, luxury homebuilders, and established businesses. Aura Design also offers brands that are more affordable but just as reputable. “For entry-level solutions,” Doucet advises, “we offer brands that strike a good balance between quality and affordability, making them ideal for anyone looking to upgrade their home without opting for the most expensive options.”
As further proof of the company’s high regard for its customers, Aura Design offers the same level of installation and follow-up service for these products as it does for its luxury lines.
“Home automation is not just about convenience,” says Doucet. “It’s about creating safer, more efficient, and more comfortable living environments.”

LA MAISON D’OR
Is Helping Make Christmas In Ottawa Sparkle

Jewellery is an amazing way to make the holidays just a little more sparkly and bright.”
And La Maison d’Or, one of Ottawa’s premiere family-run jewellers, is setting out to make Jessica Harden’s spirited words a reality.
The 75-year-old company—in which Harden, daughter of company President Brent Harden, is an in-house Applied Jewellery Professional—has helped countless Ottawa couples get engaged, married, and commemorate special occasions. This time of year, though, they’re especially busy, working hard to make the holiday season as celebratory and memorable as possible.
“We do a lot of planning for the holidays,” details Team Manager Rita Elias. “We work hard to make sure we have an amazing inventory of in-stock pieces catering to all price points and styles.”
“On top of that,” she continues, “we are offering a luxury concierge shopping experience.”
Rita details this unique one-on-one alternative to the traditional holiday shopping experience. While elsewhere, customers are often treated cursorily by preoccupied or indifferent staff, it’s an entirely different story at La Maison d’Or.
“When you come in to do your holiday shopping,” she begins, “one of our amazing GIA and American Gem Society certified associates sits down with you in one of our comfortable seating areas. We make you coffee or tea, provide you with snacks, then help you address your shopping list. We show you a variety of gorgeous jewellery, including one-of-a-kind pieces you can’t find anywhere else. We can also gift wrap for you! It’s a truly personalized holiday shopping experience.”
Masters of Merriment:
“It’s a truly personalized holiday shopping experience.”
Alternately, the company offers clients the option of using its famous gift guide, in either a print or online edition, the latter of which is updated daily. “The gift guide shows a gorgeous variety of jewellery,” outlines Jessica, “so that everyone can find the perfect gift. All our in-stock items are organized by price point for easy shopping. We want to make the holiday gift-giving process as simple as possible for the Ottawa community.”
At La Maison d’Or, staff are thrilled to help every type of holiday shopper . “There are people who are super organized and want to get their shopping done early, and there are last-minute shoppers who come in on Christmas Eve,” Rita lists. “We also see a lot of people looking to propose on Christmas or New Year’s, searching for that perfect custom engagement ring.” Adds Jessica, “Afterward, we love hearing the stories of people who got engaged over the holidays thanks to us. It’s like we got to celebrate that special moment with them as part of their extended families.”
Speaking of celebrations, the staff at La Maison d’Or holds a special one each year:
“We host an annual VIP Client Event in November,” Rita explains. “It’s a big, fabulous party with amazing food, drinks, and sparkly gifts for everyone who attends. It’s another unique way of getting to celebrate the holidays with our clients.”
La Maison d’Or is also always aiming to delight clients with their varied, destined-to-impress product lines, all of which are hand-chosen by Brent himself. Natural diamond pieces
are always at the forefront of the new arrivals, which has led to an exciting new collaboration with the Natural Diamond Council, an initiative that was brought to La Maison d’Or last year by the visionary Brent. This partnership is based on a mutual mission to promote the benefits of natural diamonds worldwide.
“We are always working to educate our customers about the beauty, value, and rarity of owning a natural diamond,” Brent specifies. “Customers now more than ever are getting the message of how truly rare they are and how valuable it is to have a natural diamond heirloom piece to pass down to future generations. Formed 100 miles below the earth’s surface over 3 billion years ago, the rarity of a natural diamond is something to be treasured.”
The company’s charitable arm, which is in motion yearround, also ups its game when the holiday bells peel.
“We’ve been donating custom-made La Maison d ‘Or 45/75 anniversary rings,” says Brent, referring to custom items designed to commemorate the longevity of the store in Orléans and the start-up store founded in Hawkesbury by his parents. “The rings are made with those natural Canadian diamonds I’ve mentioned, set in platinum. We give them to various organizations for fundraising purposes.”
La Maison d’Or’s 45/75 Anniversary Ring, featuring Canadian diamonds set in platinum—crafted to commemorate the jeweller’s rich history and ongoing legacy.
To date, La Maison d’Or has raised a total of $60,000 for organizations including the Queensway-Carleton Hospital Foundation, the Ottawa Heart Institute, Ronald McDonald House, the United Way Eastern Ontario, the Bruyère Health Foundation, and the Montfort Foundation.
Adds Brent, reflecting the spirit of the season, “Our goal is to give back as much as possible to the community that has been like family to us.”

DREAM Grows The
Abbis Mahmoud’s Vision Expands to Strathmere Country Retreat
From nightclubs to wedding bells, how Dreammind Group is shaping Ottawa.
By Dan Lalande | Photography by Nicolai Gregory
Abbis Mahmoud, the founder and CEO of Dreammind Entertainment Group, has long been an influential force in Ottawa’s social scene.
With an impressive portfolio that includes restaurants, bars, cafés, and nightlife venues in both Ottawa and Toronto, Mahmoud has established himself as a key player in the city’s evolving cultural landscape. Dreammind Group has been at the helm of several popular spots in the last decade, such as The Show, Waverley, Tequila Jacks, Dodge City, Happy Fish, and Moscow Tea Room, solidifying its status as the go-to brand for nightlife and upscale dining. However, Mahmoud’s vision for his empire has never been static.
Since 2009, Abbis Mahmoud has leveraged his expertise in crafting successful supper clubs in Toronto, with venues such as Lobby on Bloor and Delysées Luxury Desserts in Yorkville, to elevate Ottawa’s nightlife scene.
While many entrepreneurs set their sights on Montreal and Toronto for high-end ventures, Abbis has consistently directed a portion of his investments toward discovering and cultivating the same vibrant energy in Ottawa, believing in the city’s potential to shine just as brightly.
The pandemic posed significant challenges for many in the hospitality industry, but Mahmoud saw an opportunity to work even harder. The closure of key venues and the nearly three-year hiatus for ByWard Market’s Mercury Lounge, once a hub of cultural activity, signalled the end of an era spanning back to the late 90s. However, where others saw decline, Mahmoud saw opportunity. As the ByWard Market struggled to recover, he took on the ambitious task of revitalizing the historic building that once housed the Mercury Lounge. In its place, Mahmoud opened three new venues—Berlin, Underground, and Krusch—bringing life back to the Market while continuing to push the boundaries of what Ottawa nightlife could be.
Dreammind’s Head Office Staff
Dreammind Group’s recent ventures, including the Mediterranean-inspired Med Supper Club and the high-end dessert haven Delysées Luxury Desserts, have expanded the group’s reach. With Med Supper Club, which opened in late 2023, Dreammind Group raised the bar for upscale dining in Ottawa. The lavish design, Mediterranean-inspired menu, and exclusive atmosphere have made it a destination for Ottawa’s elite. Med is not just a restaurant; it’s an experience that rivals the opulence of venues in Miami or Las Vegas. For Mahmoud, Med is a crown jewel, the culmination of years of experience in the hospitality industry.
Not far behind Med’s success was the opening of Delysées Luxury Desserts, a sweet shop that offers decadent, hand-crafted desserts in a luxurious setting, transporting guests to Paris. And if that weren’t enough, Mahmoud continued to push forward with the opening of Happy Days Burgers and Poutine, a 50s-inspired burger spot that offers 100% Halal options with a promise to use nothing but fresh ingredients. It has quickly gained a following at Lansdowne.
But the latest chapter in Dreammind’s story might be the most transformative yet: the acquisition of Strathmere, a 200-acre property housing three heritage banquet halls and the opening of a holistic wellness spa, the Strathmere Wellness Retreat
Mahmoud’s journey to Strathmere is emblematic of his approach to business—bold, ambitious, and full of vision. Known for its sprawling 200acre property just outside Ottawa, Strathmere has long been a popular wedding venue, located just 20 minutes from the city’s downtown. Under Mahmoud’s leadership, a new holistic wellness retreat, designed to offer visitors an immersive and rejuvenating experience, has been added to the estate.
With a focus on relaxation, rejuvenation, and wellness, the spa offers a serene escape from the bustle of everyday life. Guests can enjoy world-class spa treatments, mindfulness workshops, and farm-to-table dining, all set against the backdrop of Strathmere’s lush landscapes and historic charm. The facilities, including hot tubs, nature trails, and seasonal swimming pools, provide the perfect environment for those looking to reconnect with themselves and nature. Whether it’s a day of relaxation or an extended wellness retreat, Mahmoud’s Strathmere project is designed to offer an unparalleled experience.
The banquet facilities will also receive the Dreammind treatment, with renovations and updates in all of the spaces, as well as enhancements in service, bar, and food offerings.
For Mahmoud, the transition from nightlife to wellness was a natural evolution. His approach to business has always been about creating experiences that resonate deeply with his clientele, whether it’s a night out on the town, a quiet weekend retreat in the countryside, or saying “I DO” with beloved family and friends, who may have spent some time at Dreammind bars at one point in their lives!
Strathmere is more than just a new venture for Dreammind; it’s a symbol of the company’s growth and adaptability in an ever-changing industry.
Looking ahead, Mahmoud shows no signs of slowing down. While the opening of Med and the acquisition of Strathmere mark significant milestones, rumours suggest that more projects are in the works. Whether it’s another luxury venue or a new take on hospitality, one thing is clear: Abbis Mahmoud continues to shape Ottawa’s entertainment and hospitality scene with his unique blend of vision, ambition, and unrelenting drive. From nightlife to wedding bells, Dreammind Group’s journey is just beginning!

Trend Report
A quick recipe for an instant holiday hit.
Smoky, sweet, and endlessly versatile, this bacon jam transforms any dish. Spread it on burgers, melt it into grilled cheese, drizzle over asparagus, or stir into scrambled eggs—there’s nothing it can’t elevate. One bite, and you’ll know why it’s a gamechanger.
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 45 minutes
Yield: 1 1/2 - 2 cups
Ingredients
1 lb thick-cut bacon, cut into 2-inch pieces
1 medium onion, thinly sliced
3 tbsp packed brown sugar
2 cups low-sodium chicken broth or stock
1 cup brewed coffee
2 tbsp honey
1/4 tsp kosher salt, plus more as needed
1/4 tsp freshly ground black pepper
1 tbsp unsalted butter
Directions:
1. Place the bacon in a large heavy-bottomed pot or Dutch oven over medium heat and cook, stirring occasionally, until the fat has rendered, and the bacon is starting to brown, about 10 to 15 minutes.
Denis Analytis
A Montreal-born chef with Greek roots, Denis has transformed his culinary heritage into a thriving local business that nourishes Ottawa's professionals and athletes.
2. Add the onion, season with salt, and cook, stirring occasionally, until the onion has browned, about 5 minutes. Add the sugar and stir to combine.
3. Add 1 cup of the brewed coffee and bring it to a simmer, scraping up the browned bits from the bottom of the pot. Continue to simmer, stirring occasionally, until the mixture has thickened, and almost all the liquid has evaporated, about 8 to 10 minutes.
4. Add 1 cup of the broth or stock and simmer, stirring occasionally, until the mixture has thickened
and all of the liquid has evaporated, about 8 to 10 minutes.
5. Add the remaining cup of broth or stock, honey, measured salt, and black pepper and stir to combine. Continue to cook over medium heat until it’s reduced to 1 1/2 - 2 cups, about 8 to 10 minutes. Remove from the heat and stir in the butter.
*At this point, the bacon jam can be cooled to room temperature and refrigerated in an airtight container for up to 2 weeks.
The Dhillon DyNamic
A DECADE OF GROWTH
BY CATHRYN WHEELER
PHOTOGRAPHY BY NICOLAI GREGORY
When Gurpreet Dhillon left a career in telecom for the mortgage industry, he never expected the passion for mentorship that would emerge along the way.
A decade later, Centum Mortgage Masters, the business he launched with his father and brother, has grown from a boutique family operation into a respected brokerage serving Ottawa and the Greater Toronto Area. At its heart, however, it remains a family-driven enterprise, combining personal service with forward-thinking expertise.
Mentorship has been central to their growth. “Building a larger team allows us to reach more people and offer services in multiple languages,” Gurpreet explains. “Watching our agents grow and helping more families reach their financial goals is incredibly rewarding.” His leadership has turned Centum Mortgage Masters into more than just a brokerage— it has become a trusted partner in the community, empowering both clients and professionals.
Harvey Dhillon plays a critical role as team lead and business financing expert. His approach focuses on presenting financing solutions that meet the specific needs of clients and lenders. “There isn’t one strategy for business financing,” Harvey notes. “It’s about making logical, well-prepared requests that build trust with lenders. Only when we establish a clear need can we secure financing that drives business growth.” His expertise broadens Centum’s ability to support clients beyond personal mortgages, helping entrepreneurs thrive.
Despite their expansion, the Dhillons remain committed to maintaining the personal touch that has defined their success. “Transparency, accountability, and teamwork are at the core of everything we do,” says Gurpreet. Harvey
echoes that sentiment. “We’ve built a culture where agents share knowledge, support each other, and collaborate to provide the best outcomes for our clients.”
Their approach to first-time homebuyers reflects that same philosophy. “Knowledge is power,” Gurpreet emphasizes. “Taking extra time with clients helps them make informed decisions, especially first-time buyers. Many come back for future investments with a deeper understanding, making the process even smoother.”
As Centum Mortgage Masters continues to grow, the Dhillons are focused on building lasting relationships with their clients.
“Growth is important,” Gurpreet reflects, “but
we’ll always stay true to the values that got us here— investing time in people, building trust, and focusing on long-term success.”

Megan Tomlinson Is Breaking Barriers on the Race Track
By: Cathryn Wheeler
Photography by: Nicolai Gregory
Megan Tomlinson isn’t just racing for podiums—she’s racing to change the landscape of Canadian motorsports. At just 24 years old, the Ottawa native has emerged as a rising star, competing against some of the best in the TCR (Tour Car Racing) class while making history as the first female driver to score points in the TCR World Tour. But Megan’s ambitions reach beyond personal success. Through her achievements and the creation of Slate Racing—Canada’s first femalefounded racing team—Megan is paving the way for future generations of women in motorsports.
Her love for racing began early, inspired by her father’s passion for the sport at Calabogie Motorsports Park. From her first laps in Miatas to headto-head battles against her dad in TCR races, Megan has embraced every challenge. Below, she shares insights on her career, from podium finishes to overcoming mechanical setbacks, and reflects on the importance of pushing beyond comfort zones to achieve personal growth.
What inspired you to pursue racing professionally?
Racing professionally felt like a natural next step for me. My dad once asked, ‘Why do you always choose the hardest thing you can do?’ That question stuck with me, and I realized that if you don’t challenge yourself—if you don’t push to your limits—you’ll never grow. Even if you don’t always finish first, the process of pushing beyond your comfort zone and falling short, then trying again, is what truly matters. Every experience adds something valuable to your skillset, preparing you for the next opportunity.”
Competing in the TCR class is a significant step up. How has the transition been for you, especially handling the Audi RS 3 LMS compared to your previous cars?
The step up to TCR has been incredible—it’s something I’ve aimed for since the beginning. The platform feels a lot more stable than the cars I used to race, which gives me more confidence on the track. I faced some challenges, with three out of 12 races impacted by mechanical issues, but I still managed to secure a 5th place overall finish, which was really rewarding.
Racing Rebel Megan Tomlinson is a trailblazing driver for TWOth Autosport and Slate Racing, competing internationally in the TCR class and breaking barriers for women in motorsports.

GUIDE Your Holiday Style Guide
Embrace holiday sophistication with these essential style tips.
Try Monochrome Metallics for Daywear
Silver and gold are often reserved for evening events, but embracing a single metallic tone for daytime—like a gold sweater or silver trousers—creates an unexpected, high-fashion vibe. Pair metallics with knitwear or neutral layers to tone down the shine while staying festive.
Play with Velvet in Accessories, Not Apparel
Rather than the traditional velvet blazer, integrate this luxurious fabric into less obvious areas. Opt for velvet scarves, pocket squares, or even footwear like loafers or sneakers. These small touches add elegance without overpowering the outfit and offer versatility for both formal and casual settings.
Reverse Layering: Showcase the Underlayer
In holiday outfits, your shirt, turtleneck, or undershirt can be the star. Wear mesh, lace, or patterned fabrics underneath a plain blazer or coat and let them subtly peek through. This creates dimension and intrigue without overdoing the outerwear.
Experiment with Statement Socks as the Focus
Rather than jewelry or other accessories, use eye-catching socks—think bold patterns, luxe materials, or quirky designs—as a statement piece. Showcase them with cropped trousers or rolled cuffs. It’s a playful yet elegant way to bring personality into your look without needing flashy accessories.
ASHLEY & GORD
ARE KEEPIN’ IT PURE
Authenticity. Ask both Ashley Greco and Gord St. Denis what the most important part of being a radio personality is and that’s the word you’ll get. Put another way, the newly morning minted team on Ottawa’s Pure Country 94 comes by the “pure” part honestly.
BY DAN LALANDE PHOTOGRAPHY BY NICOLAI GREGORY
Same for the “country” part. Ashley, from Cambridge, Ontario, grew up participating in countified family sing-a-longs; Gord, from Tilbury, Ontario, had a father whose drum kit and fiddle kept bootheels shufflin’ across Southern Ontario. Small wonder both members of The Morning Pick Up got bitten by the radio bug. Broadcasting is a tricky profession, though. You can end up covering more territory than a cattle drive and jobs can be as tough to hold on to as a distempered bronco.
“If Ashley suggests something for the show, I back her 100%. Our belief in each other is so strong, we’ll try anything once.”
But both Ashley and Gord were more than up for the challenge. Ashley, currently celebrating twenty years behind the microphone, was committed to bringing the warm family feeling she enjoyed growing up to the wider world. She learned the broadcasting basics at Humber College and has been working ever since. She’s handled every time slot there is in every size of market, bringing the intimacy necessitated by serving the smaller ones to major metropolitan areas. Gord attributes radio with giving him the sense of direction he couldn’t find in school (“I loved everything about university but the learning,” he characteristically jokes). He studied his craft at Conestoga College before making the radio rounds: Wingham, Chatam, London, Kingston, and twice now, Ottawa.
In August, the two were paired on Pure Country 94. While there were enough commonalities between them to suggest the most perfect fit since Tim McGraw and Faith Hill, there’s a lot more to the art of mixing and matching a morning team. Again, it comes back to authenticity, this time with each other. Explains Ashley, “Gord and I are always open with one another about ideas, the direction of the show, and how we’re feeling that day. It’s a great way to set the tone.” Affirms Gord, “If Ashley suggests something for the show, I back her 100%. Our belief in each other is so strong, we’ll try anything once.”
It’s the kind of personal investment that can only come from a place of deep mutual respect. “Gord is such a talent,” Ashley assesses. “Other than my hubby John, he may be the funniest guy I’ve ever met. I’m never not laughing.” Says Gord of Ashley, “She’s a pro’s pro. She’s well prepared, incredibly funny, and has a different way of looking at things in and out of the studio.”
There’s another kind of love at work whenever these two get together: an appreciation for their audience. Ashley, who’s spent the bulk of her career at the CHUM affiliate in Toronto, is a happy new Ottawan. “I love this city,” she announces. “There’s a real sense of community here and a lot of love for country music, which is amazing!”
Gord, who’s become such a fixture here now he’s the in-game host for the CFL’s Redblacks declares, “I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else. This is where we’re going to raise our family.”
That family is made up of his ever-supportive wife and their much-loved one-year-old daughter, Joey (a.k.a. Josephine). Ashley has her own edition: the aforementioned John and the budding Aria. It’s another incredible synchronicity between these two, who integrate the ups and downs of parenting into their on-air patter. Mind you, juggling work and home, given the hours that they work, isn’t always easy. Says Ashley, “There are days that are more challenging, but I always remind myself that I am teaching my daughter the importance of doing something that you love and working hard to keep it.”
Gord even thinks punching the clock before the sun comes up is a parental boon: “What’s nice about working the morning show is that
I’m usually home before noon, so I get a lot of time with my kid.”
As for what else Ottawa can expect from the team behind The Morning Pickup, Gord can encapsulate that in a single word: “Fun!” Elaborating, he adds, “If we don’t make you crack a smile first thing in the morning, we’re not doing our job.”
For Ashley, it’s still about imparting the benefits of family and music that has buoyed her career. “In the end,” she says, “it’s about letting people know you truly love you do. It’s easy to ‘stay on the horse’ that way— hopefully, with your cowboy hat still on!”
