Fact Finds
Little Majlis Shop Discover more of Abu Dhabi with FACT Finds. Every month we’ll bring you a new hotspot, our favourite happening, eatery, activity or interesting find from around the city.
At the FACT office, all us girls (and some of the guys too!) who love to shop, are constantly on the prowl for quirky and quaint jewellery, one-of-a-kind t-shirts, cool bags, and all sorts of unique goodies. So, imagine our excitement when we came across Little Majlis – a specialist online shop selling handmade and artisan products, marketed by Gulf-based artists, designers, cooks and crafters – we were thrilled, to say the least! Founded in 2012 by two ladies living in Dubai – Anna Bolton-Riley and Annabelle Fitzsimmons – this shoppers haven encourages GCC residents to buy handmade goods, which in turn supports local talent, helps to grow the regional arts scene, and allows small businesses to prosper through whatever small promotion gained from consumer buys. You can browse by product category, including Accessories, Bags and Purses, Clothing, Edibles, Furniture, Pets, Toys and many more, or you can have a peek through the boutiques one by one. The products on sale are all from independent and individually run shops, and are generally not commercially produced. Some of our favourites that we’ve 12

found on Little Majlis so far include ‘the rustic bead’ selling beautiful, contemporary interior accessories; then there’s ‘Kuki’ with its luxury cards, keepsakes and cute hanging signs; we also love ‘B&D Art’ who make catchy and colourful wall art for adults and children. These are just three of the hundreds that sell on Little Majlis. On the website there is a section for sellers, a blog, regular gift guides, and a forum where the Little Majlis community keep in touch. This is an idea and a platform that gives the local creative community to find a niche, start and grow their small business, promote their work and connect with buyers. Thanks to Anna and Annabelle, the brains and beauty behind Little Majlis, consumers, not only in the GCC, but the world, can buy beautiful and exclusive products knowing that their purchase has been created or will help promote homegrown talent.

LISTEN UP
S w eet S ymphony This month sees one of the world’s most celebrated orchestras come to our shores and perform for the very first time, as part of the Abu Dhabi Classics international concert series. That’s right; The City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (CBSO) – one of Britain’s longest-established musical institutions - will deliver two performances in the Emirate for audiences to enjoy.
GO: Visit www.cbso.co.uk or www.abudhabievents.ae for more information on the performances and where to buy tickets.
The CBSO, which was founded in 1920, and whose first conductor was the celebrated English composer Sir Edward Elgar, will perform on a floating stage at Corniche Breakwater, to coincide with the celebrations to mark the city’s hosting of the round-the-world Volvo Ocean Race fleet, as well as at the historic Al Jahili Fort in Al Ain. CBSO’s Abu Dhabi Corniche Breakwater concert will include Elgar’s Enigma Variations and Bruch’s Violin Concerto to No.1, which ranks among the most difficult violin pieces ever written, with Canadian violin soloist James Ehnes, widely regarded as one of the best violinists of his generation. The orchestra’s Al Jahili Fort performance will feature extracts from Holst’s The Planets and music by one of Hollywood’s greatest film composers, John Williams, as well as the work of prominent Indian film composer A.R.Rahman. The orchestra will play Williams’ compositions from film classics such as ET, Superman and Star Wars alongside music from Rahman’s Taal, Bombay and Lagaan. The orchestra will be conducted by CBSO Associate Conductor Michael Seal, who took up his eminent position in March 2011. The appointment recognised his work as Assistant Conductor, the first in the CBSO’s history, and the special relationship he has built with the orchestra. CBSO chief executive Stephen Maddock said: “We are thrilled that the CBSO has been invited to perform in the 14

UAE for the first time. As classical music becomes ever more popular around the world, this opportunity to perform for new audiences in the UAE is very special. We hope that this visit to Abu Dhabi will be the first of many.” The tour comes at the invitation of Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority (TCA Abu Dhabi) which has reintroduced, after a three-year break, the Abu Dhabi Classics season, running until May.

LISTEN UP
BBC’S BLUE PLANET BBC Worldwide’s Blue Planet in concert will make its Arabian premiere on December 12, opening the 2014/15 Volvo Ocean Race Destination Village on Corniche Breakwater. Blue Planet in Concert combines spectacular, specially-cut, high-definition footage from the award-winning TV series – The Blue Planet – with the emotional and evocative musical score performed by a live orchestra. The show will raise the curtain on the three-week stopover celebrations with two 90-minute evening performances on December 12 and 13 on a 10-metre wide screen placed on a purpose-built, floating stage in the waters off Abu Dhabi’s Corniche. The performance will be accompanied by a 78-piece orchestra led by five-time Oscar-nominated composer, George Fenton.
D estination V illage A weekend celebration of Emirati culture and heritage on December 26 and 27 will be a highlight of the 2014/15 Volvo Ocean Race (VOR) Abu Dhabi Stopover, which runs in the capital between December 12 and January 3. Visitors to the purpose-built VOR Destination Village, organised by the Tourism & Culture Authority (TCA), and more than the size of five football pitches, on Abu Dhabi’s Corniche breakwater, will experience all aspects of the UAE, from cooking and food, to 16

arts and crafts as well as music and entertainment. Given Abu Dhabi’s maritime heritage, a lot of the action takes place on the water with the magnificent sight of 100 dhows - the traditional Arabian sailing vessel - racing in the 43-foot dhow race on December 27. Later on, check out the must-see premiere of the new docufilm A Grain of Sand about the music and heritage of pearl divers in Abu Dhabi. No celebration of Emirati heritage would be complete without henna painting; falconry shows, camel rides, Arabic calligraphy and language workshops, which will take place throughout the weekend across the entire Destination Village. Entertainment will include performances of the traditional Ayala dance and sea chanting performances, and throughout the VOR stopover festival expect pearl diving showcases, ocean conservation exhibitions and activities such as turtle conservation talks and beach clean ups. GO: Visit www.volvooceanraceabudhabi.com for more information.

DIY C hristmas C rafts Bring on the Baubles You might think that this is an activity strictly reserved for kids, but you couldn’t be more wrong – once you get your bauble and paintbrush you’ll see just how addictive it becomes. You don’t have to stop at paint; you can use glitter, Sharpie pens, feathers and pretty much anything that can be stuck to a bauble! The best way to tackle this is to lay an old cloth out over the table, get plenty of glue, a bunch of brushes and paints, and plates of different coloured glitter, then let loose on some plain baubles!
Christmas Cards Homemade Christmas cards are a really nice touch and you can often make them with things that you already have in the house. Simply buy some plain card and then raid your cupboards. A really nice idea is using a straw to blow various food colouring in different directions, to paint a Christmas tree. It takes a few tries to get it right but that’s all part of the fun! Another little trick is to stencil a Christmas design on the back of some funky wrapping paper, cut it out and stick it to the card – you’re guaranteed to never give the same card twice!
Gifts Galore Homemade gifts can often be the most memorable, so grab the scissors and pull out your old box of photos and think about making a collage for a loved one. There’s nothing quite like reminiscing over the Christmas holidays, looking through old photos. Take a selection of your favourite pics and get creative with your layering and snipping skills! It’s a great way to give a meaningful gift without breaking the bank. Everyone loves candles, right? You can make them in quirky glass jars, or even teacups! There are tons of ‘how to’ guides all over the web so get searching and scrolling!

C hristmas C laus ’ C ookbook One of the best things about this season is the wonderful festive food that you can make, bake, and enjoy with family and friends. Here are some great recipes to try…
US scientists calculated that Santa would have to visit 822 homes a second to deliver all the world’s presents on Christmas Eve, travelling at 650 miles a second. Most of Santa’s reindeer have male-sounding names, such as Blitzer, Comet, and Cupid. However, male reindeers shed their antlers around Christmas, so the reindeer pulling Santa’s sleigh are likely female! The world’s tallest Xmas tree at 221ft high was erected in a Washington mall in 1950. Many parts of the Christmas tree can actually be eaten, with the needles being a good source of Vitamin C. The largest Christmas cracker - 45.72m long and 3.04m in diameter - was pulled in Australia in 1991. In Armenia, the traditional Christmas Eve meal consists of fried fish, lettuce and spinach. Santa has different names around the world - Kriss Kringle in Germany, Le Befana in Italy, Pere Noel in France and Deushka Moroz (Grandfather Frost) in Russia. Christmas has different meanings around the world; Christmas Eve in Japan is a good day to eat fried chicken and strawberry shortcake.

Big Screen
Mr. Turner What’s it about:
J.M.W Turner, the great, if eccentric, British painter is brought to the big-screen in a Mike Leigh masterpiece. This film is an exploration of the last quarter century and topsy-turvy life of one of the most intriguing painters in history. Profoundly affected by the death of his father, loved by a housekeeper he takes for granted and occasionally exploits, Turner forms a close relationship with a seaside landlady with whom he eventually lives incognito in Chelsea, where he dies.
Director: Mike Leigh Cast: Timothy Spall, Ruth Sheen, Leslie Manville Why it’s worth watching? It’s been a long time since we’ve seen a film with such a magnificent central role; here, Timothy Spall gives an Oscar-calibre performance, that is, in its entirety, strangely gripping. It is, of course, the richly detailed character of Mr. Turner who shocks, excites, intrigues and captures the audience’s attention. Mike Leigh takes a distinctly original approach to this celeb biopic, showcasing Turner’s life as he travelled, painted, lived with aristocracy, visited brothels, and was even strapped to the mast of a ship so that he could paint a snowstorm. Spall’s way of embracing the ramblings and somewhat odd behaviour that Turner was known for, is refreshingly unstructured and abrasive (which we love!) as he ‘grrrhhhs’ through his scenes, mesmerising viewers into another world. Mr. Turner is funny, fitting, and down right awesome as far as dramatics go – a true monument to a British master – with Leigh and the whole cast demonstrating an unrivalled command of their own craft.

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies What’s it about: We come to Middle Earth as Bilbo and co. are forced to be embraced in a war against an armed flock of combatants and the terrifying Smaug from acquiring a kingdom of treasure and obliterating all of Middle-Earth.

Director: Peter Jackson Cast: Ian McKellen, Martin Freeman, Richard Armitage, Evangeline Lily Why it’s worth watching? It’s time to give a big send-off to our favourite fantasy world as we take one last journey to Middle Earth *cue the tears.* As soon as the trailer hit screens and we saw just how epic the final part is set to be, we began counting down the days! It’s the calm before the storm, as the plot leads up to the final battle on the doorstep of the Lonely Mountain. We’ve had a glimpse of these impressive scenes and, rest assured, they could rival (or exceed) the Battle at Helm’s Deep in LOTR: The Two Towers and the battle at Minas Tirith in LOTR: Return of the King, in terms of the sheer size and scope. A Better Tomorrow
By Wu-Tang Clan
If social media comments and blogger input is anything to go by then
it’s safe to say that hardcore hip-hop followers might just be left disappointed with what’s set to be the Wu’s (as they’re known to fans) final album. The production has been described as “corny” and the hip-hop crew has been called out for using too many samples and “grimy beats” on a 15-track record that many expected to be a classic. With that said, there are a few standout songs on A Better Tomorrow that save the group’s rap reputation. Take Ruckus in B Minor – it captures the raw face of hip hop with a well-orchestrated symphony, as each member bullies their way through the track, spitting “Wu is the way. The Tang is the slang.” This is a rather lyrical album that shows maturity – fitting, as two members; RZA and Raekwon recently put aside their differences and made up. This album captures the gritty New York sound that helped stylize the Wu two decades ago. Will it be a classic for the iconic rap group? We’ll let the fans to decide!
ROCK/METAL
Rock or Bust By AC/DC It’s no secret that AC/DC take rock seriously. This new 11-track record is aptly titled Rock or Bust; four songs on the album have “rock” in the title, and they’ve even selected a small Australian town (population 3,000) literally called the Rock to launch their new album. Makes perfect sense to us! So far, we’ve heard the roaring chords of Play Ball, and it sounds exactly like every other AC/DC song – which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, because, we can guarantee this song will get stuck in your head. It’s hard to believe that this is the first album without founding member, Malcolm Young (Rhythm Guitar), but his nephew, Stevie Young, definitely holds his own and honours his uncle in a powerful way. Fans of the boys from Down Under who’ve been desperately waiting for a comeback since the group’s last album, Black Ice, you’re in for a real rock and roll ride.
“So far, we’ve heard the roaring chords of Play Ball, and it sounds exactly like every other AC/DC song.”
If you’ve ever wondered how a normal guy from Suffolk, England hit global stardom and banked millions with his music, then this book will give you the insight you’ve been waiting for. With words by Ed Sheeran and illustrations by his childhood friend, artist Phillip Butah (who produces artwork for Ed’s albums and singles too), and accompanying photos, this book is an exclusive, fully authorised, first-person account by Ed of how he became an internationally renowned singer-songwriter. Talking about his early musical influences and experiences, the book reveals what drives and inspires Ed as he continues to evolve as an artist, while coping with stratospheric success.

Bygone Charm Muscat is far from a metropolis; there are very few high-rise blocks, and even the most functional buildings are required to reflect tradition through architecture, with a dome or an arabesque window feature. It’s because of such things like the strict building policies that Muscat, even to this day, has retained a character that’s very different from the region’s other capitals. What we witnessed was an attractive, clean and quirkily uniform city with the most hospitable and friendly people. The sea plays a major part in the city; fishermen in small motorboats are up at the break of dawn for the catch of the day; and cruise ships brings visitors, while goods arrive in containers, to the historic ports of Mutrah and Old Muscat. Pristine beaches that stretch as far as the eye can see hug the city’s shoreline, and in areas like Al Bustan and Bandar Jissah, the ocean has become a fantastic source of recreation for watersports, diving, dolphin watching and day trips out on the water. Muscat is, truly, different from its neighbouring nations, and you’ll likely be sucked into its relaxed atmosphere and old-world Arab charm. We found in Oman, what we miss in busy UAE life. The genuine. 56

l Bustan Palace, a Ritz-Carlton Hotel, located between the foothills of the Hajjar Mountains and the breathtaking Sea of Oman, is a hidden jewel that brings the celebrated traditions and the unparalleled beauty of this GCC country to life. The Muscat hotel is surrounded by lush gardens and palm trees, picturesque peaks and a spectacular shoreline, so, it’s no surprise, that when you enter the grand lobby, with its tall ceilings, plush chandelier and intricate architecture, you’re instantly transported to an environment of tranquility. The relaxed ambience, the friendly and attentive staff, who were welcoming guests with Arabic coffee and a cold towel, as well as, what we soon came across to be, spacious rooms and suites, fantastic dining options, superb service and great recreational facilities, all made for a very memorable stay. Here’s what you can expect… 60
fact magazine
As far as accommodation goes, expect nothing short of the best and most comfortable rooms and suites here. We’d recommend the Executive Sea View Suite, located on the floors seven and eight of the hotel. This suite type is incredibly spacious with fabulous amenities and, best of all, impressive panoramic views of the ocean ahead, the hotel gardens on one side, and the mountains on the other. We loved the abundance of natural light that comes in through the expansive windows, as well as the separate sitting and dining room area, the walk-in closet and the uber luxurious bathroom with Asprey amenities. When you’ve spent a day out exploring all that Muscat has to offer, there’s nothing better than coming back to a plush king-size bed to relax on and watch a bit of TV on the flat-screen or catch up with friends on Facebook, using the complimentary wireless internet. This suite really does have it all covered, making for a great home away from home.
Dining Defined Dining at Al Bustan Palace is an exciting, experience. For breakfast, lunch, and dinner, we were welcomed at Al Khiran Terrace which served up extensive buffets of the most fresh and finest food. Pick up a coconut on ice in the morning for a cool start to the day; for lunch, there are light and tasty salads as well as hot mains, and for dinner, we’d highly

recommend visiting the restaurant on a Friday for its popular steak night where your choice cut of meat is prepared to preference with an array of delicious sides to go with. Desserts are plentiful and scrumptious too! We would like to applaud the fantastic staff, especially Ulroy, the restaurant manager, for their friendly and attentive service – it made every visit to Al Khiran very special. If you want a more intimate dining choice, China Mood is a lovely venue, serving up authentic Chinese dishes (we particularly enjoyed the various dim sum). There’s a beautiful outdoor seating area, perfect for if you’re visiting in cooler climes.

Relaxation Refined Relaxation is what it’s all about at Al Bustan Palace. Yes, there’s plenty of activities and local attractions and excursions to go on, but you must spend a day or two in resort and make use of all the great services and activities on offer at the hotel too. A pristine sandy beach that’s perfect for sunbathing, strolling and having a game of volleyball (if you’re feeling active!), is right on the hotel’s doorstep. There are plenty of sun loungers and cabanas to accommodate guests, set around the stunning pool area, the pretty green gardens, and on the beach too. There’s a fitness centre for all those who want to keep up with their exercise routine; a tennis court with a range of fun classes for beginners and pros; and even a nail and hair salon for both ladies and gents to get their pamper on. Our highlight whilst taking time out to relax was definitely the 50-metre temperaturecontrolled infinity pool – perfect for both kids and grown-ups alike. For those who want to get a bit of action in with the chill-out time, there’s a whole host of activities available throughout 62

A stunning hotel, a gloriously sunny day, twisting roads through the dramatic mountains of Oman, and the entire range of Maserati’s 2015 models lined up, waiting to be driven. This could be heaven. Or, it could be Maserati celebrating 100 years of history in style!

When it comes to Maserati’s current ambitions globally, perhaps the most telling moment of the event itself was when I was introduced to the Maserati Quattroporte Diesel. It may shock a lot of you to hear that Maserati are now making diesels, because Maseratis have traditionally been seen as an exotic choice – an extravagance whose purchase is driven more by the heart and passion than the brain and sensibility. What the introduction of diesel models is telling us is that Maserati means business, and wants to compete with the Germans. It means that now a Maserati can be, not just beautiful and luxurious, but, sensible too. And for a diesel, the Quattroporte was great. It looked, felt and rode like a Maserati, but unfortunately didn’t sound like one. It’s like seeing Rosie
Huntington-Whiteley, but when she talks Katie Price’s voice comes out! Despite plenty of low-end grunt thanks to that torquey engine, it just spoils the effect somewhat. However, it need not concern you lot too much, because you will never see the diesel in the Gulf, so, moving on… Next I found myself stepping into the awesome Quattroporte GTS. Now this is more like it! The beefy 530hp 3.8l twin-turbo V8 emitted a glorious howl that rattled along the surrounding Omani mountains like angry devils as I engaged the Sport mode and powered

through the gears on the eight-speed auto with paddle shifters. It was lean, mean, and thanks to the 50:50 weight balance, handled sublimely, without ever becoming too jarring on the uneven mountain roads to Bandar Qiran. This is what a Maserati sports sedan should feel like in every way. It’s ferociously fast in Sport mode with a delicious growl from the exhausts, and yet in comfort mode it glides along like a dream. A truly beautiful car! However, it was not quite as beautiful as the next on the list – the jaw-droppingly gorgeous (and amply monikered) Maserati GranTurismo MC Stradale Centennial Edition. Differentiated from the regular MC Stradale by that stunning red paint job, the Centennial edition nevertheless shares everything else with the normal MC, and that includes the Race button fact magazine

in addition to the Sport, which sharpens the steering and throttle response, tightens the suspension and opens up the pipes to emit a mesmerising howl from the exhausts, and the naturallyaspirated 4.7l V8, which puts out 460hp, and will propel the car to 100km/h in 4.5 seconds. Though this seems fast, for a car that looks this extreme, is the fastest in the range, and claims to be the road-going version of the Maserati Trofeo MC racing car, you can’t help but feel that it isn’t enough. A sub-four second time would have it stepping on the toes of the Ferrari California T. This is perhaps the reason why it doesn’t, and perhaps may do in the future now that Ferrari is leaving the Fiat stable, and is now a competitor rather than a sister brand! Either way, it is still one of the most beautiful-looking cars I’ve ever driven, or seen for that matter. Honourable mention goes to the four-wheel-drive Ghibli S Q4 - despite a smaller 3.0l V6 engine, it’s still a twin-turbo, so it’s still very fast, and there’s still a deliciously racy howl from the engine. Added to the superb handling and balance, it’s an absolute 68

Toyota Racing Hits the Gulf TRD is to Toyota what AMG is to Mercedes, or M Sport is to BMW. And now, for the first time, it’s available in the Gulf. Many will ask what’s taken so long? FACT finds out…
T
oyota Racing Development (TRD) has been around in other parts of the world for many years. In the Gulf region, though, TRD parts and accessories were limited to third party importers, until now. That is because, for the first time in the region’s history, Al Futtaim has brought the TRD brand to the Gulf as a fully-operational division of Toyota, complete with workshops, warranty-covered mods and accessories, and a range of performance upgraded Toyota models. Available now are TRD-spec versions of the Yaris hatch, Yaris sedan, Corolla, Aurion and, of course, the Toyota 86, along with a long list of parts and accessories available to existing Toyota owners. Launched at Yas Marina Circuit last month, the TRD packs are instantly recognizable, with sharper designs that also lend the cars better performance, such as improved straight line and cornering stability thanks to better down force and aerodynamics. The performance enhancements on all the models don’t add too much in terms of power, although some of the mods, such as the sports air filter on the 70

motoring
VTX 86, do increase engine efficiency and performance. The improvements are mainly in terms of handling, with lowered suspensions, low-profile sports tyres, stabiliser sets and brace sets improving the rigidity and agility of the cars. There is a noticeable difference on the Toyota 86 Sport packs, with livelier engines and much-improved handling making for an interesting experience on the circuit. Overall, we were impressed. TRD packs are now available in special TRD displays at Al-Futtaim
Motors Toyota showrooms across the UAE, and will soon be available in the rest of the GCC. All TRD parts come with a five-year warranty, and are built to GCC specifications to ensure quality and reliability for the life of the car. While elements of each pack can be purchased separately, the complete aerodynamic and sport packs will be available at promotional prices.
TRD 86 Cup
The TRD launch announcement coincided with the announcement of Al-Futtaim
Motors’ partnership with Yas Marina Circuit for the launch of the TRD 86 Cup, a single-make race series that offers a cost-effective entry into the high-adrenaline world of circuit racing. The series comprises track-ready Toyota 86 Cup cars combining exhilarating performance, exciting race kits and livery and a low cost maintenance package with an entry price of just AED 150,000 for the season. This puts motorsports well within the reach of many, as interested parties could conceivably find just two or three sponsors and enter a team. fact magazine

FACT Looks Back at the Spectacular Abu Dhabi F1 GP As the editorial team recovers from yet another hugely successful Abu Dhabi F1 GP season finale, we bring you a round up of FACT’s Formula One weekend…

G
litz, glamour, thrills, excitement and entertainment – the Abu Dhabi GP brought it all this year, with a nail biting end to a tense F1 championship season which saw Lewis Hamilton take the chequered flag, and therefore the Drivers Championship title for the second time in his career. The circuit went wild as Hamilton crossed the line, spurred on by the ecstatic driver’s burnouts near the Marina Grandstand. A spectacular firework display lit up the sky and the roar of the crowds was amplified by the blasting of horns on every yacht in Yas Marina. It was quite an experience, and the atmosphere was electric. A visibly emotional Hamilton took to the podium after being congratulated by his team as well as his family and girlfriend, Nicole Scherzinger, who had turned up to the race as a surprise for the driver, and he had this to say: “Thank you to all the fans, coming all this way, all the flags, all the support, it’s made such a difference this weekend. And to my team, who did an incredible job, without them I wouldn’t be
here today. I can’t explain how much this means to me, it feels just as amazing as the first time, I feel so blessed.” Hamilton dominated from the very beginning of the race with an absolutely storming start, “Probably the best start I’ve ever had,” according to Lewis, that saw him take the lead and build a comfortable gap behind him. Apart from brief stints during pitting periods, he led the race comfortably until a thrilling but unsuccessful bid for the lead by Williams driver Massa. As Massa completed his second and final pit stop he came out on super soft tyres with incredible pace, gaining dramatically on Hamilton in the closing laps of the race at a pace of almost a second per lap, setting several fastest lap times along the way. For a while, it seemed as if he would steal the chequered flag, but Hamilton squeezed every last bit of pace out of his Mercedes to hold on until the end, with Massa and fellow Williams driver Bottas taking the next two podium places. Rosberg, on the other hand, couldn’t have had a worse race, as everything seemed to go

3 Minutes withthe ceo Despite being incredibly busy, Yas Marina Circuit CEO Al Tareq Al Ameri sat with us for a few minutes to let us know how it was all going…
wrong for the German driver. A poor start saw him lose pole, and then his ERS system failed midway through the race, losing engine power to the tune of 150hp, a failure than saw him lose place after place as the race wore on to finish a dismal 14th in a sad ending to what had been a stellar season. And for us? It was an incredibly hectic weekend as a whole. We tried, and failed, to be everywhere, but highlights for us were definitely Aarmin Van Buuren at The O1NE Yas Island, the Pharrell and The Who post-race concerts at the Du Arena, and Rudimental at The Podium Lounge at Yas Viceroy on the Sunday night. The celeb spotting in the F1 Paddock was out of this world, as we caught sight of Michelle Rodriguez, Pharrell, Tyrese Gibson, Nicole Scherzinger, and none other than the UK’s Prince Harry, as well as the usual suspects in the world of F1. But now, we must rest and recover, and ruminate on what was an incredible F1 weekend. Well done Yasalam, the Yas Marina Circuit, and well done Abu Dhabi!
How has the weekend been going for you? It’s been amazing so far. We walked around and see the customers’ engagement, everybody seems happy, they enjoy the setup and the upgrades that we did, so all in all I think we’re in a good place. What’s been upgraded? We expanded the capacity in two major areas. One is Abu Dhabi Hill, which we added about 3000 extra tickets to 6000, and we increased the Paddock Club by 1500. What does being the last race of the year mean to you personally? We’re ecstatic, to be honest, to be hosting the finale here in Abu Dhabi means a lot to us, and it obviously means a lot to the fans, as we’ve sold out even with the added capacity, and everybody’s enjoying themselves. And I don’t think we could wish for any better scenario than what we have right now, with the battle for the title coming right down to the last race here, because that is what’s best for the fans, and therefore best for everyone. The Abu Dhabi GP is now in its 6th year, and it was just announced the contract has been extended, so how long for? The contract extension has been stated as simply ‘multiple years’, so we’ve extended indefinitely. We see ourselves as long-term partners with FOM, and both sides are happy about this. The Abu Dhabi GP has been a huge success, and a winning situation for both sides.

Numbers Demonstrate
F1 Success!
Only days before the Abu Dhabi F1 GP weekend kicked off, it was announced that the tickets to the event had completely sold old, confirming an attendance to the race of a record 60,000 spectators. However, this figure was just the tip of the iceberg, as more numbers were released demonstrating the incredible amount of work that had gone into making the GP a success. Six charter flights, each carrying 90 tonnes of gear, airlifted all the Formula One team equipment to Abu Dhabi. 140 sea freight containers also landed at Khalifa Port, bringing the remaining team kit for the Formula 1, GP2 and GP3 races, making a combined air and sea freight operation totalling 750 tonnes.
Feeding 60,000 hungry mouths each day were 1,924 catering staff, serving around 29,670 meals in the corporate hospitality suites and Grandstand (not including the Paddock), in addition to 12,250 staff meals for Yas Marina Circuit employees across the weekend. A team of 59 gardeners had been working constantly to lay 75 acres of grass, and plant a total of 715 palm trees and 150,000 flowers in preparation for the event. Painting the track is one of the final maintenance jobs, with six specialist contractors applying
8,550 litres of specially commissioned paints to the circuit, including pantone 321, a blue colour unique to Yas Marina Circuit. The track’s distinctive white edging lines must be painted four times, meaning the painting contractors will have to cover a distance of 26 kilometres, including pit lane lines, applying about 450 litres of white paint. Quite the undertaking, but worth it in the end as it resulted in yet another superb season finale for Formula One.

CHEF’S TABLE
O
ne thing’s for sure, Chef Joly really knows, and owns, his way of cooking. “My style is mainly driven by the authenticity of the products,” he says. “I would say simplicity of cooking is what I like to do. I have a lot of respect for the chef ’s who use recipes for molecular type of cooking but, for me, I prefer to cook something classic.” With a valuable 25 years of experience in fine dining and hospitality, it’s no wonder that Chef Joly’s cooking philosophy of “respect the product” is, simply, a strong one. When we walk into the private dining area that he and his team will be using to prepare some food for us, we see the most colourful and fresh ingredients, including vegetables, herbs, condiments, sauces and more, lining the kitchen counter top. First up on our plate is the Classic Beef Tartare. Usually, a dish that you either love or hate (raw meat isn’t everyone’s cup of tea!). However, it became immediately clear, that this starter had won us over because of two things – the meat was cut in beautifully thin cubes and the veg and herbs used for seasoning actually enhanced the taste of the meat. After a successful start, we quickly learned that Chef Joly’s manner of cooking really preserves the true taste and flavours of the food. Not one

“I really like every cuisine style as long as it’s made in an authentic way and with respect to the product.” ingredient was manipulated, more so, every component of a dish was used because of its special and unique flavour. Next up on the table are two mains that have our taste buds jumping with excitement; Omani Lobster “Thermidor” and Braised BBQ Shortrib with root vegetables and truffle polenta. Both are hearty mains presented with autumnal flavours and colours; the lobster is cooked to tender perfection and the braised beef is an absolute winter warmer; the meat is succulent and slides of the bone effortlessly. Chef Joly tells us that he discovered his passion for cooking at the age of four, while watching his mother
and grandmother who were “always cooking something delicious.” We end our meal with a fabulous dessert; Plan Baked Cassata with local organic honey. One word – YUMMY! Not much has gone into making this dish, however, everything looks and tastes great. “For me, cooking is also about giving some pleasure to the guests, so I cook around the product; to keep it simple and tasty” Chef Joly says. Go on, book yourself a private dining experience, or head to the Beach House at Park Hyatt Abu Dhabi and see the gastronomic wonder of Chef Joly for yourself. - we’re planning the next visit too!

Fine Dining & Sea Views at Scott’s •
Located on the tip of Abu Dhabi’s Corniche, a visit to Jumeriah at Etihad Towers is always a treat. This time, we discovered the seafood restaurant, Scott’s, flying the foodie flag for London and British cuisine. It’s somewhat of a hidden gem, situated on the hotel’s private beach...

“If a good dessert is what makes a memorable dining experience for you, then, rest assured, you won’t be disappointed with the selection at Scott’s - it’s all part of the impressive British grub!”
I
f you’re going to eat fine food, you may as well tuck in somewhere with even finer views, right? Look no further than Scott’s restaurant, a sophisticated, spacious and simply stunning venue, right on the beach. We walk past the oyster counter into a large and lavish space; the tables are set to rival any five-star silver service dinner, with the cutlery gleaming in dim light. Deep gold-coloured drapes separate a number of seating areas, and silver pillars dotted with bauble-style lighting add a trendy dynamic to the setting. On first impression, it is the warm and welcoming smiles of the staff and waiters that gets us ready and relaxed for the evening. There’s a lovely atmosphere with an eclectic mix of diners; businessmen talking finance and numbers over a glass of vino; an older couple celebrating their wedding anniversary; a young couple on a date talking about their interests; and us, a group of friends having a casual meal out. Scott’s has a 160-year history, and this Scott’s restaurant is the first to open in a new location outside of London. We’d heard of the fine oysters, fish and other fresh seafood, as well as seasonal game, meat and vegetarian dishes that the venue serves, and were all too excited to try the exquisite British cuisine. 94

VENUE REVIEW
The menu at Scott’s has enough choice to please meat eaters, seafood lovers and even vegetarian foodies. For starters we go for Fried Oysters with curried mango chutney; the Lobster and New Season Asparagus Salad; and the Salmon Gravalax with pickled cucumber and sweet mustard. The starters come out as little canapé-style portions where you get just enough to whet your appetite yet still have plenty of room for the rest of meal. As first-timers for trying oysters, we were grateful for the addition of curried mango chutney, which added a little sweet kick to the saltiness. For mains we opt for the Rib Eye Steak
USDA Prime with béarnaise sauce and chips, and the Char-grilled Sultan Ibrahim with caper and tomato dressing. The portion size of both mains is great, with enough of each accompaniment on the plate too. The steak is prepared to our desired temperature (a mouthwatering medium), and the fish is tenderly cooked with a beautiful sauce to go with. And you can’t have mains without the sides – in this case we’d recommend the mashed potato and cauliflower cheese. If a good dessert is what makes a memorable dining experience for you, then, rest assured, you won’t be disappointed with the selection at Scott’s. Try the Bramley
Apple and Blackberry Pie with custard, for a real flavour of impressive British grub! Scott’s is a plush venue – that goes for the food and the surroundings. With its business-casual vibe and fantastic menu (which is, surprisingly, reasonably priced) there’s no reason why this shouldn’t be the place of choice for regular get-togethers with family and friends.

The 1.3km private beach at the Emirates Palace is, hands-down, the best in this part of the city. It stretches to the hotel’s very own marina overlooking a private natural bay. There are enough sun loungers on the beach, and staff are very attentive to the guests’ needs. One member of the team ran over with two pairs of slippers as we were getting out of the water so that the boiling sand – it was 45 degrees out - wouldn’t burn our feet! It’s this thoughtful nature of the staff that really helps you enjoy the lush landscaped gardens and the two glorious swimming pools – one designed for
Relaxation Refined To complete the Emirates Palace experience, a visit to the brand new spa is an absolute must. From the moment you enter and hear the trickle of water features, breathe in the smell of spa aromas, and are greeted by friendly staff that bring you a cold towel and juice upon arrival, you’ll feel transported to a tranquil haven. There’s a stunning Moroccan hammam, couple’s suites, private spa suites inclusive of steam and shower rooms, beach spa cabanas, a vichy room, and much more. If you’re after something relaxing but different, try the Revitalising Rain Shower treatment where you’ll lie on a large marble slab as the therapist begins with a precious salt exfoliation to reveal soft and cleansed skin, followed by the soothing vichy shower which gently allows for water to fall on your body through several shower heads, all at once. fact magazine

Afterwards, opt we opted for a Swedish Style Aromatherapy Massage, and let us start by saying, whoevers idea it was to have actual duvets on the spa beds, you’re a genius. It’s super comfortable and works great for those who get too cold from the a/c. The pressure and strokes during this massage were excellent, and you’re able to select the oil used. ridium Spa has its very own private entrance, easy to spot on the right-hand side as the taxi I’m in slowly drives up the winding road to the St. Regis. You know what this means?
