Another One Bites the Dust

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER GREG HUGHES

“Who’s the bane of Santa’s life? The elf and safety officer.” – Catherine Tate

EDITOR-IN-CHIEF SHABANA ADAM (shabana@fact-magazine.com)

t seems like only yesterday that I was writing this very monthly letter talking about how fast the year has gone and my goals for 2018. Time really does fly. I’m sure many of you find yourself thinking the same thing. And if, like me, you’re wondering exactly what you’ve done, achieved or experienced in the past year, here’s how to give yourself a little reminder. A colleague recently told me to look through my photo gallery on my phone and scroll up the last 12 months. Wow! There are things I did in 2018 that I’d completely forgotten about; scaled a mountain and zip-lined off it in Oman, finally made it to Azerbaijan, attended one month of back-to-back family weddings, and in a very unexpected turn of events, decided to take the adrenalin up a notch and do the world’s longest zip line in Ras Al Khaimah. No biggie! So while December can be a month of complete chaos, too many dinner parties, lots of brunches, and wild celebrations, make sure to take a few minutes to slow down and have a cheeky little scroll through your 2018 in photos - believe me when I say that you’ll find some real gems that will bring back all the memories. For those of you who like to dive straight into the holiday season, it’s time to amp up the excitement and plan your month ahead. We’ve got all kinds of festive treats picked out for you; from gingerbread house decorating to festive afternoon teas; delicious dinners and lavish brunches, you need to turn straight to p23 for the lowdown. Similarly, New Year’s Eve is set to be a full-on party right here in Abu Dhabi, with venues bringing their A-game for the year's biggest event. Think trendy parties, gala dinners, intimate soirees, DJ performances, and so much more to choose from, starting p50. There's all the travel inspo you require with our Globetrotter trip: check out everything you need to know about the very cool and creative Andaz hotel brand (p65), which has now opened the Andaz Capital Gate, a lifestyle property and a first for the brand in the Middle East. I started with a winter playlist as early as mid-November - sorry not sorry. As Jingle Bells Rock - the Mean Girls’ version of course - plays in the background as I type, I can’t help but feel a big inner festive cheer coming on, for the incredible year we’ve had at FACT, and for the endless possibilities to come in 2019! Wishing you all a very merry festive season and Happy New Year!☺

AMAZING ANDAZ The aptly-dubbed “Leaning Tower of Abu Dhabi” now has a new host, officially opening as Andaz Capital Gate Abu Dhabi and turning the iconic building into a distinct, locally-inspired experience. REPRESENTED ACROSS THE GLOBE in destinations including London, New York, Tokyo and Shanghai, Hyatt’s luxury lifestyle brand, Andaz, now adds its first hotel in the Middle East to its hospitality portfolio. Andaz Capital Gate Abu Dhabi elebrates distinctively local culture and delivers an elevated experience that awakens the senses. Aligned with the brand ethos of authentically bringing the local neighborhood to life, the hotel offers inspiring experiences, helping guests immerse themselves in their surroundings and live like a local from the moment they arrive. Andaz Capital Gate Abu Dhabi occupies floors 18 to 33 within the iconic Capital Gate building and is the world’s furthest leaning hotel at an impressive 18-degree incline. Synonymous with the brand’s intention to engage guests in local UAE culture, the property takes visitors on a journey through the country’s unique identity. Design elements are multi-layered and span various textures and techniques in order to represent both the UAE’s modest beginnings and traditional elements, as well as the current ultra modern façade of the city. At each touchpoint, guests can discover the stories of four cultural symbols appreciated by locals for generations, chosen for the power and respect they command within Emirati culture. These symbols include ‘Mashrabiya’, intricate wooden 10

window adornments; ‘Khatt’, poetic Islamic calligraphy; ‘Al Sadu’, traditionally woven fabrics; and iconic Date Palms’ motifs. Upon entering Andaz Capital Gate Abu Dhabi, guests are greeted by an array of creative, thought-provoking masterpieces crafted by skilled local artists to introduce them to the local culture. The ground floor serves as a permanent art space to be explored throughout their stay, and each guestroom features its own individual artwork to familiarise them with the region. PREGO’S PERFECTION Beach Rotana Abu Dhabi has welcomed Antonino Chirieleison to spearhead the kitchen of its popular Italian restaurant Prego’s. CHEF ANTONINO IS NO stranger to the UAE with previous professional experience including The Address Downtown Dubai, the Grand Hyatt in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. From his native Sicily, Antonino moved on to a number of reputed restaurants, among them L’Andana in Tuscany bearing the signature of 2 Michelin star Chef Alain Ducasse where he held the position of Sous Chef. He then decided to develop his career further in London, only to make the next move to Dubai in 2012. His main inspiration to become a chef roots in his childhood in Messina where he watched his mother and grandmother preparing the food for their infamous family feasts every Sunday morning. “Kneading the dough, cutting it into identical pieces, marinating the meat with tomatoes and fresh herbs from our garden – with all the attention to detail, my curiosity for the art of cooking grew,” he recalls. “Today, there is hardly anything I enjoy more than challenging and developing my culinary skills.” 12

fact magazine

Chef Antonino’s main aim is to bring authenticity to the dishes and to encourage guests to try something new. Once a dish makes its way onto the menu, it’s the beginning of the next journey of creating and introducing a new flavour. He says: “I always try to bring in an authentic Italian dish that is a specialty in my country, but never got the chance to be introduced outside Italy. “There are so many options that are not known to fans of our cuisine, and I’m aiming to make Prego’s the place for them to experience something traditionally new.” Prego’s also possesses a bar area and a terrace overlooking the water, ideal for dining on during the winter season. Open daily from 12pm to 11.30pm. ✤

BIG SCREEN Mary Queen of Scots WHAT’S IT ABOUT?

Queen of France at 16 and widowed at 18, Mary Stuart returns to her native Scotland to reclaim her throne as well as defying pressure to get remarried. With Scotland and England under the rule of Elizabeth I, the two young queens are rivals in power and love as they must decide how to play the game of marriage and independence.

DIRECTOR: Josie Rourke CAST: Saoirse Ronan, Margot Robbie

WHY IT’S WORTH WATCHING?

Based on John Guy’s biography Queen of Scots: The True Life of Mary Stuart, Mary Queen of Scots is a lavish epic featuring two female regents in the masculine world. One of many movies to explore this timeless tale, the film tries to complicate the narrative and tells the story in a way that has never been done before. Starring Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robbie as Mary, Queen of Scots and Queen Elizabeth respectively, the latest rendition talks about themes that are relevant even today. Defying societal pressure to get remarried, Mary heads to Scotland to reclaim her rightful throne. But with Scotland and England under the rule of her cousin, the compelling Elizabeth I, the young queens battle it out in the name of love and power. Gripped in fear and fascination for each other, both queens experience betrayal and conspiracies within their courts which endanger their thrones and change the course of history forever. A whole lot of scandal, impressive wigs and renaissance flair.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald WHAT’S IT ABOUT:

In order to prevent Grindelwald’s plan from coming to fruition, Albus Dumbledore enlists his former student Newt Scamander, who agrees to help, unaware of the danger that lies ahead. What follows is the test of love and loyalty in an increasingly divided world.

DIRECTOR: David Yates CAST: Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston

WHY IT’S WORTH WATCHING?

Get ready for some serious nostalgia as the second adventure in J.K. Rowling’s film series takes us back to the magical world we all know and love! Featuring unworldly young magi-zoologist Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne), the film takes a darker and more sombre turn. As Albus Dumbledore tries to thwart Grindelwald’s plan to raise pureblood wizards to rule over all nonmagical beings, he enlists the help of Newt, despite the dangers ahead. A treat to all Potterheads, Rowling has incorporated references to the Hogwarts universe, younger versions of old characters as well as hints of an origin myth. Johnny Depp’s epic portrayal of Gilbert Grindelwald and Jude Law’s striking performance as young Dumbledore definitely deserve a special mention.

I Might Regret This: Essays, Drawings, Vulnerabilities and Other Stuff By Abbi Jacobson

HIP-HOP

Yandhi

By Kanye West

Giving us our much-needed dose of ‘Ye, Kanye West is back with his ninth studio album, Yandhi. After an eventful year delivering a number of chart-topping hits and plenty of personal drama, his newest album was hotly anticipated. Recorded in his hometown of Chicago and in a studio set up in Uganda, the album features an array of guest artists, including Ty Dolla Sign, Rihanna, Kid Cudi, Young Thug, Migos, Nicki Minaj and posthumous vocals from XXXTentacion. Accompanied with a goofy and bizarre video, I Love It featuring Lil Pump and Adele Givens is as outrageous as it is catchy. The quirky lyrics combined with a catchy beat and comedian Adele Givens’ interspersed jokes make it a song that people won’t be forgetting anytime soon. This album is all about good vibes and great tunes. We Got Love featuring Teyana Taylor is all about self love and self improvement. Showcasing a well-constructed verse by Kanye and Teyana Taylor’s stunning vocals, the track totally reels you in. This has definitely been Kanye’s year in music, maybe not so much on social media though. If the music’s good, we’re not complaining.

The Pains of Growing

By Alessia Cara The follow-up to her massively successful debut album, Know-It-All, Alessia Cara’s newest offering blesses us with another round of mesmerizing vocals and amazing tunes. After a number of smash collaborations, Disney theme songs and a Best New Artist Grammy, the Canadian singer has finally released her sophomore full length, The Pains of Growing. A midtempo pop song with soulful vocals and lyrics, Growing Pains is exactly what a classic Alessia Cara song sounds like. A song about loneliness, growing up and trying to overcome the sadness that comes with it, Cara dives into her deepest feelings. A lot more personal than anything she has ever put out before; the album sees her at her most vulnerable. Craving independence and self-empowerment, the bubbly track Trust My Lonely is exactly what we need right now. The perfect balance between vibrant youthfulness and self-affirmation, this is definitely one of our favourite songs on the album. Written during a very important and confusing time of her life, The Pains of Growing is as relatable as it gets. We’ll be belting out these tunes for days to come!

A hilarious and heart touching collection about love, loss, work, comedy and figuring out who you really are. This is the book you need to pick up for a much needed dose of inspiration and a whole lot of laughs. STAYCATION SPOTLIGHT •

hen it comes to the hospitality of today, we have fallen head over heels for hotel-apartments. After all, who wouldn’t want the option of more space, the choice of cooking a meal, and – what remains one of the most important factors for us – a washing machine at your disposal during your stay? Of course, if you’re travelling for just a few days on business, the likelihood is that you will use the hotel’s laundry and dry cleaning services. However, for many families and guests staying for a longer period on work assignments or those on holiday, every little makes a big difference, and Capital Centre Arjaan by Rotana is the type of property where you will have an abundant of possibilities. The upscale property offers 259 modern fully-furnished studios and suites. With rooms ranging from classic studios to one and two bedroom suites, the hotel is an ideal destination for holidaymakers, business guests and longterm stays if you’re seeking a hassle free experience to settle down in the capital. We check in for a few days of leisure (plus a couple of work meetings here and there) and find a hotel that goes above and beyond what it promises guests.

CLASSIC LINES

The Classic One-Bedroom Suite is where we’ll get comfortable during this stay. At 69sqm, it’s a large and open space with all the mod-cons you need for a restful visit. Small families, couples and solo travellers will revel in all the space, the open-plan, fully-equipped kitchen and separate living area. Perch on the cushy sofas and watch your favourite channels on the 55” LED TV or plug in your laptop and check some emails at the dining table – where there’s enough space to dish up a lavish dinner spread and eat to you heart’s content. One thing we applaud is the number of wall sockets in this room. It might sound like a strange thing to point out but if you’re a business traveller with many devices, a tech fiend who likes to have their laptop, phone and kindle on-the-go, or if there’s more than one guest and your batteries die at the same time, you won’t have to fight for a socket or USB port here. We also loved the practical layout and thoughtful use of lighting which makes the room light up in all the necessary spots that you might want to use for cooking, working or general hanging out. It feels super cosy and inviting! The bedroom is a nice size and designed in a way to make good use of the space – almost like what you’d find in someone’s home. Its contemporary, chic interiors reminded us of how we’d like to decorate our very own bedroom; minimal clutter yet warm and welcoming. Spending time in this suite was a treat from start to finish.

FOOD TO IMPRESS

It’s often perceived that hotel apartments tend to lack on the dining front. Not Capital Centre Arjaan though. The hotel offers two food experiences; Tamarind restaurant with a fact magazine

buffet breakfast and a la carte menu that won’t leave any gourmand dissatisfied, and Aroma Lobby Lounge with its selection of teas, coffees, soft drinks and tasty pastry. We’d highly recommend the kale and feta salad at Tamarind if you’re looking for something fresh, fast and packed with flavour. With that said, it was the in-room dining that really stepped it up and had us raving about the hotel to our friends and peers for days to come. Feeling slightly puckish, we opted to order the fried chicken, mashed potato and gravy off the kids’ menu. Firstly, the portion size was just right and, secondly, the entire meal was some of the best comfort food we’ve ever had in Abu Dhabi. It made us wonder just how good the other main menu items would be. It’s no surprise that Capital Centre Arjaan pleased on the food front as the Rotana brand is firmly known for its allround quality food offerings – and this place is no exception.

RELAX TO THE MAX

Recreation also seems to be another one of Rotana’s strong suits. Every gym we’ve ever visited in a Rotana hotel has received big thumbs up from us. Here, the story is the same! Bodylines Fitness & Wellness Club packs a well-equipped gym with state-of-the-art facilities along with cardiovascular and free weight training area; then there’s an outdoor temperature-controlled swimming pool that is suitable for both adults and children; separated sauna and steam rooms for gents and ladies alongside specialised massage therapists who carry out luxury-spa-worthy treatments in super comfortable massage rooms. We treated ourselves to a good amount of workouts followed by a relaxing massage – one that could rival any big 5-star resort. The best thing? You just need to jump back in the lift and go straight to your room, and let the ultimate feelings of zen sink in. Having these treatments available really took Capital Centre Arjaan up a notch in our hospitality books.

HOSPITALITY WIN

Not only is this hotel full of choice – something that we appreciate as guests – but there is also no pressure to fit into a “type” of traveller box. If you’re there on business, take one evening to exercise and calm your mind, body and soul with a massage; and if you’re there on holiday, make use of the excellent location to explore landmarks, the local area and even potentially interesting exhibitions. At Capital Centre Arjaan by Rotana, you don’t have to conform to the regular travel stereotypes for this is a property that has the perfect balance of facilities and services for every single person that checks in. You’re only dilemma will be choosing exactly how you want to spend your time here – and what a great dilemma that is to have! ✤

olourful, asymmetric-style clothing hangs from the ceilings and on the walls of the lobby at Andaz London Liverpool Street. It’s no coincidence that the internationally-acclaimed and sustainable fashion brand Vin + Omi has its latest collection adorned inside this Grade II listed building. After all, design is at the heart of this hotel, which holds on to the rich heritage of its past, dating back to the late 19th century when it was occupied by The Great Eastern Hotel, all the way up until now and the modern aesthetics of a more tech-savvy and creatively-driven lifestyle. This is what intrigued us straight away about Andaz – the brand is so much more than a place to sleep at night (although it does that well too, with some of the comfiest beds we’ve rested on in the city) – it’s a true representation of life in relation to its locality. In East London, the hotel preserves many elements of historical happenings 66

that have taken place in the area as well as incorporating features of the different cultures and communities within its vicinity. For example, the guest rooms are designed to capture the hotel’s heritage and reflect its unique location as the gateway point between the traditionally refined City and the dramatically changing and vibrantly creative Shoreditch. Its aesthetic is shaped by the unique identities of both these different areas. The hotel has 267 spacious and modern guest rooms including 15 suites. Designed in a residential style, the rooms embody the comfortable and welcoming ethos of the Andaz ‘home’, with wingedbacked chairs by Morgan, bespoke bijou walnut desks and super plush beds. Large photographers’ lamps by Artisan, reinforces the theme of playfulness and creates a warm atmosphere. There is a touch of the old-school industrial, railway-inspired furnishings with rooms being more understated, mood-lit and cosy, yet bold and whimsical too. The perfect juxtaposition for East London itself! Showing support and appreciation for its neighbourhood once more, Andaz London Liverpool Street also offers four 'Room With A View' guest rooms, each featuring an entirely unique design by a London street artist, allowing you to experience a space like no other in the capital. The attention to detail and chance for guests to immerse themselves in local culture is impeccable. One of our favourite spots in the hotel is a dining outlet that, for us, exudes everything that Andaz is about. Enter Rake’s, a café by day and bar by night, and let its casual yet sophisticated atmosphere take you away. This is the kind of place where you can meet for a business catch-up over great coffee or specially-crafted cocktails or gather with friends for a lively evening of wholesome, delicious food followed by a dance as the DJ spins the hottest tunes. From boss lady/man to party child… now, what’s more London than that? To top that off, the staff are attentive and well-informed on the menu, and they’re not shy about making good recommendations. The best, however, was yet to come when we were taken into what could quite possibly be London’s best kept secret. The hotel houses a truly fascinating Masonic Temple in the depths of the building. Concealed by heavy, studded doors and accessed via a winding staircase and a spacious mahogany-panelled anteroom, this is the City’s only original Freemason’s meeting lodge, built in 1912. Opulently furnished in 12 varieties of Grade II listed Italian marble, with Doric and Ionic columns, gilt fittings and a splendid zodiac ceiling, the temple was rediscovered only by chance during the hotel’s refurbishment. Surprises around every corner, that’s Andaz (and East London) for you!

ALICE IN AMSTERDAM

THE CITY OF BIKES, BOATS AND BRIDGES – AND LET’S NOT FORGET, CANALS – IS ONE OF THE WORLD’S MOST ENERGETIC AND ADVENTUROUS CAPITALS TOO. TAKING ALL THAT AMSTERDAM STANDS FOR, ANDAZ AMSTERDAM PRINSENGRACHT HAS THE IMAGINATIVE TOUCH OF LOCAL AND LEGENDARY INTERIOR AND PRODUCT DESIGNER, MARCEL WANDERS. IT’S NO SURPRISE THEN THAT THIS HOTEL WENT ABOVE AND BEYOND OUR EXPECTATIONS…

A

s the first Hyatt hotel in the Netherlands, Andaz Amsterdam Prinsengracht had a lot to live up to. Under the creative helm of the iconic Dutch designer Marcel Wanders, Andaz had little to worry about and more to celebrate. Set on the site of the former Public Library on the Prinsengracht - part of the iconic ring of canals that was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2010 – the hotel is centrally located in the bustling heart of the city – a location that seeps into every nook and cranny of the wondrous building and its daring concept. Surrounded by the creative scene and dynamic spirit of the Jordaan district as well as the adjacent Nine Streets, the hotel’s charming neighbourhood is filled with art galleries, boutique shops, trendy fashion stores and stylish restaurants, all of which nourish the city’s free-spirited, rich and diverse cultural character. It goes without saying that as far as hotels go, the Andaz Amsterdam Prinsengracht is the true heartbeat of its backdrop; the unique charisma of the capital city is embedded in the property’s adventurous design concept, reflecting a modern view of Dutch history and local culture. Take the hotel’s 117 guestrooms or one of its five suites. Due to the unique 1970s-style structure of the monumental former Public Library, Andaz Amsterdam Prinsengracht offers a total of 15 different room types. And, trust us when we say this, you’ve never seen anything like the accommodation you’ll find here. There’s an open plan layout which allows for maximum space and natural light, whether you’re facing the calm canals or the beautiful courtyard garden. Even the bathrooms feature an open structure (with closed shower and toilet) and include a multi-functional vanity centerpiece made from 150kg of concrete. It really is something – and you’ll want to instagram it right away. What we loved the most about the rooms is how each encapsulated different views and stories of Dutch history with small, and more noticeable, custom details – it was hard not to be inspired when staying here. Did you know that the world’s first established stock exchange dates back to 1602 in Amsterdam? Neither did we until we read a little story about it on one of the walls in our room! Other striking elements included the hand-painted washbasin in Marcel Wanders’ signature “One Minute Delft Blue” style, the oversized bookshaped work desk, and unique wallpaper featured both in the room and on the walls of the washroom. The specially-designed, comfortable reading chair, a full-length mirror, and a walk-in closet completed the comfortable accommodation. The social heart and soul of Andaz Amsterdam Prinsengracht is located on the ground floor of the hotel, where the restaurant, bar,

lounge and library are seamlessly intertwined. Each space is distinct on its own, but together, they create a vibrant, exciting, and open area that is unique in its design concept. Facing the hotel’s landscaped garden, including the chef’s own herb garden, Bluespoon Restaurant showcases seasonal cuisine, serving uncomplicated European flavours with a Dutch Edge. Through active partnerships with farmers, producers and artisanal purveyors, only the very best local ingredients are used. The result is honest and authentic food, representative of its local origins. We would highly recommend booking in for the bespoke Chef’s Table experience – prepare for some of the best food you’ll ever taste. In the style of a typical Amsterdam café, the Bluespoon Bar exudes an intimate, speakeasy atmosphere surrounded by elegance, where professional bartenders serve hand-crafted cocktails from three different eras — pre-Prohibition, Prohibition, and post-Prohibition. The most enthralling aspect of all is the hotel’s incorporation of a unique video-art collection that represents a diversion from mainstream art. More than 40 unique works from various emerging and established local and international video artists, such as Ryan Gander, Erwin Olaf and Mark Titchner, make Andaz Amsterdam Prinsengracht the hotel with the largest video-art collection in the world. Depending on the work’s level of intensity and outspokenness, selections from the collection are showcased in different areas of the hotel: in the public areas of the ground floor, in the hallways throughout the various floors, or through a special video channel available on the televisions in the guestrooms. The largest display is located in the Lounge and is comprised of nine 60-inch televisions. If ever there was to be a playful remake of Alice in Wonderland, this is the kind of place she would choose to stay for all her wild and whimsical needs!

have flown with Turkish airlines a few times going to Europe via Istanbul and have always found the staff to be exceptionally friendly and warm. This trip was no acception. I was greated with a lovely smile and shown to my Business Class seat - right away offered something to drink, an extra blanket and my little onboard flight bag which contained a much required eye mask, toothbrush and earplugs. Before the flight took off, I was out like a light. Having rested comfortably, Istanbul Ataturk airport is the next thing that I see. Upon arrival, I headed straight to the Business Class arrivals lounge, to meet with our Turkish Airlines Host, Kemal. Whilst waiting, I scoffed my face with a fresh Turkish breakfast, containing different types of cheese, fresh fruit, eggs and freshly baked bread - topped off with endless cups of Turkish Tea. After breakfast at the arrivals lounge – we make our way to the Vialand Palace Hotel to rest and freshen up. Day 1: Our first stop exploring is Ortaköy, where we head for the Bosphorus tour. But first, we feul up on the famous Kumpir - which is a wood-fired baked potato. The waiter hands me a two-page list of toppings, I tick all the boxes and opt for all trimmings. After our quick lunch we head off on the boat; even though there was heavy rain for several hours, Istanbul carries a different kind of beauty with the dark clouds and historical backdrop. We have tea on board and take in the sites of this enthralling city. Once the tour is over, we have some free time, so I go hunting through the Ortaköy markets to see what goods I can buy and end up purchasing some fresh honey and sundried tomatoes. Once our bus arrives, we head straight to Nisantasi for dinner! We’re greated with the most magnificent view of Istanbul and take a seat for our grand supper. Our host has ordered for us all, so we know this is going to be huge. And, luckily, I have a big appetite! Our table was filled with mezzes, fresh breads, salads and grills. Lots of it. fact magazine

Day 2: We awake early for a tour of the hotel and then swiftly head into town for a tour of the Sultanahmet Camii (also known as the Blue Mosque). It is one of the most magnificent buildings in Turkey. It’s interior filled with Arabic calligraphy, giant antique lights and the most luxurious Turkish rugs. From here, we make our way to Topkapi Palace. A visit to the palace's opulent pavilions, jewel-filled treasury and sprawling harem gives a fascinating glimpse into their Ottoman lives. Filled with ottoman armour, swords and artifacts, this palace maintains an extensive collection of books and manuscripts in its library. The Topkapı Palace is notable not only for its architecture and collections but also for preserving the history and culture of the Ottoman Empire. Next up is the lively Kapalı çarşı (Grand Bazaar) in the Sultanahmet area where I haggled for some lovely handcrafted ceramics and prints of whirling dervish to take back home. You can also find lots of gold, fresh Turkish tea, antiques, rugs, ornaments and even furniture! After Stopping for a much-needed Turkish coffee and baklava for a pick me up, we headed to The Basilica Cister, not more than a 10 minute walk away. This is the largest of several hundred ancient cisterns that lie beneath the city of Istanbul and once stored the city’s water. The cistern has the capacity to store 100,000 tons of water. It is virtually empty today with only a few feet of water lining the bottom and tourists admiring in awe. We then head over to Galata area, and have free time to wonder the streets of Galata and Istiklal Avenue and up towards Taksim Square. Galata has an array of quirky shops and independent boutiques, filled with local upcoming artists and designers. I didn’t get time to visit Galata Tower - but this is a must if you’re in the area. Istiklal Avenue is the most famous shopping street and district in Istanbul, hundreds of locals and tourists line the streets, and have all the latest fashion, tech and food to choose from. I get lost in a sea of people and the smells of chestnuts from the vendors lined up along the street – this is my sort of place! Day 3: After breakfast we check out and make our way to the Turkish Airlines training centre where we have a tour around the facilities and get to go on a few new simulators of their new aircrafts.

We then head to Ataturk airport and say bon voyage - but not before checking into the Turkish Airlines business class lounge. This place is like a shopping centre, it is in a world of its own and I guarantee no other lounge is like it. Because I had some time to spare, I booked in for a shower in their shower rooms - marble flooring, toliteries, towels and hair dryer are all provided - it was definitely worth the 45-minute wait! I felt invigorated and relaxed so I headed to the cinema room, layed in the huge recliner and had my popcorn - I must have dozed off before I awoke to some amazing smells. I followed my nose over to the pide counter and filled a mountain of pide onto my plate followed by a mixed grill, which was situated right next to it. Drool factor was over the charts. The Lounge also offers massage rooms, childrens play and gaming areas and whatever you want to drink, from ayran to black label - it’s all readily available and never empty. When my flight was announced I didn’t want to leave, this lounge is a holiday after your holiday. I felt full, relaxed and revived for my flight back home – all thanks to Turkish Airlines for hosting and showcasting a magnificient city, their friendly and warm staff, and for opening my eyes to history and culture. ✤

Some people do not realise that Nissan has in fact held the title of highest selling SUVs worldwide in recent times and has become a firm favourite amongst SUV enthusiasts here in the UAE (that includes us). As the valiant red vehicle made its way around the corner to us, we found ourselves staring at visibly upgraded versions of this car’s predecessor. Available in both a five and a seven-seater, our focus is on the slightly smaller (more stylish and manageable) option. The first major change to stand out was the exterior that has been redesigned in a robust and unique manner, giving it a more powerful and attractive appearance. The Nissan X-Trail is well known for its sculptured lines and muscular presence, which has not changed, in fact, the redesigned front end highlights these features increasing the vehicle’s already obvious sense of style. The ‘V-motion’ grille has been widened for greater visual impact and compliments the redesigned bumper with chrome detailing. The improvements to be found within the spacious and comfortable interior were to prove even more impressive. The cabin has been further refined to ensure your comfort as well as improved functionality and practicality. Ample space and headroom, striking new steering wheel, quality leather upholstery, privacy glass, and redesigned storage areas are but a few of the new features to be found. The overall feeling provided is one of grace and proficiency. Perhaps, one of the best and most noticeable changes is Nissan’s innovative XTronic CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) automatic transmission with a restyled gear selector which eliminates fixed-gear ratios and thus the need for gear-hunting. Instead, CVT keeps the engine at optimal revs for excellent acceleration and fuel economy. This is something we can vouch for 100 per cent; after 10 days of driving the car, that includes trips up and down the E11 between the Emirates as well as everyday errands, going to events and business meetings, plus leisurely hangouts, we only filled up the X-Trail to full once, which cost AED125 – we estimate your monthly petrol spend would be around AED220 – AED250 for someone who drives the car frequently. For an SUV, this is pretty great. 78

Let’s slip into the back of the Nissan X-Trail – ready for more? The spaciousness continues with a second row of seating that slides and reclines, allowing for even more legroom or storage space. The Power Panoramic Moonroof, and leather-appointed seats are welcomed features and add to the comfortable environment. However, the X-Trail exceeds expectations in the boot, which offers a 565-litre capacity and comes standard with Nissan’s innovative Flexible Luggage Board System. The Nissan Motion Activated Liftgate provides easy access with a simple movement of the foot under the bumper. Just swing your foot under the centre of the bumper with your intelligent key in your pocket and the liftgate will open in seconds – made for parents who always have their hands full! The proof of a car’s quality however is in its driving performance and the master craftsmen at Nissan have ensured that you have a multitude of features at your disposal to guarantee a quality ride. The 2018 X-Trail has an option of both advanced petrol and diesel engines. The 2.5-litre, fourcylinder diesel engine option delivers 170HP and 233 Nm or torque. This combined with the automatic transmission and four-wheel drive ensures impressive handling and cornering ability where you always feel in complete control with plenty of power in reserve. In fact, whether it’s a night out in the city, a meeting across town, or a camping trip in the desert, Nissan X-Trail's Intelligent 4X4 adapts to the task at hand. The Intelligent 4X4 is a system that’s capable on-road and off. You can choose fulltime 2WD for maximum efficiency. Auto Mode constantly monitors conditions and adjusts the balance of power between front and rear wheels for best traction. Challenging conditions? 4WD Lock Mode is your choice. With the many terrains and winter weather to tackle in the UAE, the X-Trail certainly has got your back in every driving condition. With enthusiastic drivers all around us on the roads, we were quietly thankful for this model’s impressive safety features. Nissan have included Rear Cross Traffic Alert as well as Blind Spot and Front Collision Warning systems. Nissan’s ‘Intelligent’

technology systems have been developed to include the Around View Monitor, Emergency Braking, Cruise Control and Trace and Ride Control. The car also comes with two airbags as standard, plus side curtain airbags on SL models, driver assistance systems including anti-lock brakes, electronic brake force distribution and stability control. Some of the useful features that are ideal for the UAE include: Active Engine Braking which uses the CVT transmission to apply engine braking to help give smoother deceleration and a more confident feel when braking - so whether you’re slowing for a corner or coming to a stop, X-Trail has you covered. How many of you hate those very annoying bumps in the road, and how you have to constantly interrupt your driving pace and flow? With the X-Trail’s Active Ride Control, the car can automatically apply braking and adjust engine torque after you hit a bump to smooth out your ride. Genius! Then there is Active Trace Control which helps improve performance when you take a corner. It reads the cornering situation and, if needed, can brake each wheel individually to help you steer through the turn with confidence. Furthermore, the Active Brake Limited Slip system senses wheelspin and applies braking pressure onto any slipping wheels, while redirecting power to the wheels with the best traction. There’s only one feeling you get when driving the X-Trail – CONFIDENCE. Additionally, you can focus on having a pleasurable behind-the-wheel experience with all your driving information in one central location on a 5” colour display. Thanks to the New NissanConnect with Navigation and Mobile Apps for all your music, Facebook and Online Google Search, X-Trail is your smartphone’s best friend. By the time we gave back the keys for the X-Trail, we were convinced of the superior class and performance of this quality SUV. We strongly recommend anyone looking for a family-friendly, stylish and kitted-out SUV to start with a 2018 Nissan X-Trail test drive. It will potentially change your motoring life, and all your future drives! ✤

LET’S GET READY TO KINDLE Avid readers are in for a real treat with the new Kindle Paperwhite…

W

ith so many new and innovative products making their way into the gadget market every day, it is hard to determine which ones are definitely worth the moolah. From smartphones and e-readers to speakers and cameras - the options are endless. Making your selection process a whole lot easier, we decided to take the new and improved Kindle Paperwhite for a spin! A sleeker design, more storage, an updated processor and a waterproof design, the new Kindle Paperwhite takes all these essential features and makes them even better. While Kindle has steered clear of the various advanced technologies seen in many new gadgets, it has definitely improved. The fourth generation of the Paperwhite, it boasts a refined design that is smooth and unobtrusive. It has the same 6-inch, black and white, 300 ppi (pixels per inch) display as the previous generation, but with an additional LED light. Making your reading experience even more comfortable, the newest Kindle is 10 per cent thinner and lighter than the last Paperwhite. Ideal for some bathtub and pool reading, the new Paperwhite is also waterproof up to 2 meters for 60 minutes. Apart from a sophisticated design, the e-reader now ships with a minimum of 8 gigabytes of internal storage, double what it shipped before. While the processor has been updated, the new Paperwhite features the same amount of low-power

RAM as previous Kindle models. A feature taken from last year’s Kindle Oasis is audiobooks integration, enabling you to listen to your Audible titles on the e-reader using Bluetooth headphones or a Bluetooth speaker. You can easily upload them all to your Kindle Paperwhite and then connect to your device to listen to your books while you’re on the go. The software experience has also been enhanced and includes new features that will roll out to all Kindles. It includes Amazon’s long-standing Whispersync feature, which ensures your page location, bookmarks and highlights are synced across all of your devices with the Kindle app. But what makes the Paperwhite truly stand out is the new feature that allows you to custom name a preset with a certain font type and size. While Amazon’s Kindles aren’t as innovative as other new electronics in the market, it surely helps you indulge in the joy of reading without any distractions. The Paperwhite’s new lighter design, waterproofing and support for Audible definitely help catch up with the Oasis. If you’re looking for an e-reader with a mid-range look and feel that allows simple and efficient reading, the new Kindle Paperwhite should be right up your reading nook! ✤

AMAL SHINE With the award-winning and leading voice of fashion and lifestyle in the UAE capital, Amal Salameh REIKI TREATMENTS, ZAYA NURAI ISLAND Reiki seems to be quiet in vogue at the moment and big with the celebrity circle as everyone from Angelia Jolie to Gwyneth Paltrow being reported to be big fans of the practice. So, what is Reiki? Reiki is a Japanese technique that is used to heal physical and mental woes and to support mental clarity and spiritual wellbeing. The word Reiki combines two Japanese words - Rei which means 'Spiritual Wisdom' and Ki or 'Universal Life Energy'. The award-winning Nurai Spa have recently added Reiki treatments to their spa sanctuary listings with certified Reiki Master Syrine Chinman. With a curious mind, I pull out a summer dress and hop on a boat for a 12-minute ride to the infamous pristine island to discover more. Upon arrival, we’re taken for a tour around the Nurai Spa and inside their treatment rooms which boast jaw-dropping views of the ocean with the sound of waves crashing on the shore line – extra points go out for sound therapy. Now there is no 'typical' Reiki session, setting or procedure but with a zen-like setting at the Nurai Spa, you have to admit that background plays a huge part. Now, how does it work? A complete Reiki treatment session is usually given to a fully clothed person who's lying on a treatment table or sitting comfortably in a chair. Reiki is generally offered through gentle, non-intrusive touch. The healer's hands are placed and held on (or above) various locations of the body, often corresponding to our main energy centres (chakras). The benefits range from helping with migraines, useful for PMS, boosting the immune system, and treating insomnia. It is important to mention that it cannot fix everything and it’s best to view Reiki healing as a form of complementary therapy used in conjunction with conventional/mainstream medical treatment and advice. In the meantime, ready, set, zen.

Yours fashionably, Amal 94

SKY HIGH BRUNCHIN’

As far as iconic venues go in Abu Dhabi, the modern Sky Lounge Thirty-One at Grand Millennium Al Wahda has all the elements of a quality restaurant; good food, good service and exceptional views overlooking downtown Abu Dhabi. O

n any given evening, Sky Lounge Thirty-One draws in a lively crowd who indulge in innovative Arabic dishes, signature drinks, and flavoured shisha. The Arabian-influenced venue hosts one of the city’s best oud players, treating guests to a mix of classic and modern Arabic beats that set the mood, while the spectacular city skyline remains the talking point at every table. It was only a matter of time before Sky Lounge Thirty-One elevated their offers to include Friday Brunch. On our recent visit, we were whisked up to the 31st floor to the newly-refurbished, rooftop restaurant for its appetising soiree. What you’ll notice immediately is a sense of elegance; there’s a ballroom-style drape across the ceiling, beautiful tables with comfy seats and lots of space for a brunch gathering – and by that we mean room for plenty of plates stacked with your favourite foods. We’re welcomed by friendly members of staff who explain the brunch layout and bring us some water to start with, but by now, we’re already hovering over the salad and appetiser station. The new brunch is Mediterranean inspired, and this is visible through the fresh, vibrant concoctions before us. The watermelon and feta salad, the beetroot and walnut mix, as well as the vine leaves and array of vegetables including cauliflower, carrots, and courgettes, amongst others are all a lovely light start to our brunch experience. Ingredients are fresh and flavourful, simple yet satisfying. For vegetarian diners or anyone looking to curb a healthy appetite, this spread is perfect for you! A very special shout out goes to the Barley and Lamb Broth – it’s a mouth-watering blend of chunky veg and meat in a delicious broth that feels like winter in a bowl. For the cool and cosy days ahead, this is the kind of soup we love at brunch, teamed with warm bread, it’s the seasonal dish that you need in your life! There’s a sushi counter where chefs will prepare and plate up your choice of rolls a la minute, and in a nice creative touch, there’s a “make your own salad” trolley where you can request for a fresh plate of Tabbouleh or Caesar Salad, mixed to your preference. Moving over to the hot dishes, this is a brunch that really spoils you with variety. Once more, meat eaters are gratified with a juicy carving station where the Roasted Lamb Rack and Prime Beef Ribs wait to be savoured. Our absolute favourite however was the full-sized Baked Hammour in Salt Crust, so succulent that 98

fact magazine

you’ll want to go back for seconds. Much to our delight, a live oven station serves up freshly-cooked Pizza and Turkish Pide. The latter is a treat because not many Friday Brunches that are set up buffet style offer pide – the lamb option was especially good. We also enjoyed the Sea Bass Rolls with Sundried Tomatoes – and soon came to realise that the culinary team at Grand Millennium Al Wahda has really excelled with their fish and seafood dishes. Dessert was an area that we spent a lot of time lingering in – because we couldn’t decide on which tastes to indulge in. After much deliberation, it was the Pistachio Cake that won us over. You’ll find everything from rich, chocolate sponge to yummy red velvet and plenty of Arabic sweets too. Of course, a chocolate fountain, fruits, mini cakes, and more are also lip-licking options. The atmosphere is completely relaxed and there’s even a dedicated entertainment area for kids. The biggest and most pleasant surprise of all for us was the Arabic music duo who played the most sweet-sounding, Friday tunes. Not too loud, and adding a touch of class to the afternoon. This is a family-friendly set up that also does a decent job of catering to groups of friends and couples too – not to mention the incredible, insta-worthy views. Put it on your Friday Brunch list, asap! ✤

uddha Bar needs no introduction and the newly-opened Buddha Bar Beach at The St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort has already made a mark in the capital. They’ve cleverly brought the classic Buddha Bar vibe and menu to Abu Dhabi with an absolutely stunning beachfront venue. It overlooks Saadiyat Beach and has a beautiful relaxed vibe yet is uber chic and cool. Walking up to the venue with its palm-tree-lined pathway and lush gardens will have you feeling like you’re on vacation. The hostesses are friendly and welcome us warmly. The décor is gorgeous with low lighting, plush furniture and a relaxing ambiance which is perfected by beats played by the resident DJ. The menu, as you would expect from a Buddha Bar venue is Asian-influenced, and each dish has something very enticing about it. It’s a carefully put together menu and you can choose from hot and cold entrees, salads, sushi and ceviche and a choice of mains. This is one of those places where you’re initial reaction is to try everything on the menu – well, that was ours at least! To start, we choose the lobster dumplings and the Buddha Bar chicken salad. The dumplings are truly delicious and it’s not hard to see why they are a favourite on the menu with their yummy creamy sauce. The salad is also a hit with tender five-spice chicken, cabbage and pieces of crunchy wonton pastry chopped up throughout. We try the sushi platter for two aptly named Queen of the Beach and it’s simply incredible. The presentation has the wow factor and is served up with lots of sushi, sashimi, oysters and ceviche. This is the perfect dish to order if you really want to impress your dining companion. The mains are just as good and we opt for the toothfish and the wagyu beef. The beef is tender and perfectly cooked with Chimichurri, corn and sweet Rocoto sauce. The toothfish is also super tasty and another dish on the menu that has garnered favouritism with sweet miso, quinoa salad and truffle dust. This venue is definitely one to add to your eatingout list, the food is exceptional and service is very good. The bar area is also fantastic and the talented mixologists can whip you up something creative to quench your thirst. ✤

EXOTIC INTRICACY

• NEW IN TOWN

N

amak, which means “Salt” in Hindi, revolves around a concept described as ‘Indian cuisine with global footprints’ and it appears pretty clear the newest Indian restaurant to open in the capital has been heavily influenced by the likes of Tamba and Carnival by Tresind, two UAE restaurants setting the bar when it comes to the diverse food of the Indian subcontinent. The restaurant, with its bold colour scheme, ornately carved wooden doors and brass kitchen utensils, makes for a worthy attempt at replicating the vibrancy of India in terms of both personality and food, which comes to us from Indian celebrity Chef Kunal Kapur. Many will likely recognise Chef Kapur from his appearance on Masterchef India and his judging role on the semi-final of Masterchef America alongside Gordon Ramsey. Unfortunately, Chef Kapur was not present when we dined at Namak just a week into their soft opening phase, but the team assure us he will regularly return to Abu Dhabi to oversee the restaurant. Situated towards the rear of the space and close to the 22-seater private dining room lies an elongated bar, churning out some truly memorable cocktails and mocktails. The Fall In Love is a charming blend of carrot juice, honey-maple and passion fruit, resulting in a seductively creamy concoction arriving amidst smokey theatrics and adorned with a heart. The global inspiration of the Indian food served at Namak makes for an admirable deviation from the norm, defying expectations of what can be done with a cuisine often overlooked as little more than rice, curry and bread. Beginning with a light and fresh crab and mango salad, our 12-course tasting menu translated into a journey through the heart of India via a number of standout choices. The vegetarian Rocket and Cheese Paniyaram presenting soft rice batter spheres upon a wooden tressle, and the succulent Katafi wrapped Tiger Prawn with pickled chilli cream and tobico caviar represent definite must orders. The Kerala Duck Roast Tart with its pulled duck confit, masala pastry and splashes of raspberry chutney looks more like a Jackson Pollock painting and is a striking visual surpassed only by the abundant flavours. While the sheer simplicity of the Chennai Bruschetta hits us with pangs of childhood nostalgia, for the dish takes the idea of marmalade on toast and elevates it through the use of cottage cheese, masala and pink peppercorns, creating an unprecedented emotive connection and one that can only be found with food.

The influence of the Southern Indian state of Kerala returns for the Kerala Fried Chicken, a lollipop of gunpowder coated crispy fried chicken plated upon a spiraling whirlwind of yogurt. Artistry aside, the dish is rather similar to the main course of Namak’s Kadhai Chicken, with the latter semolina-coated chicken and delightful truffle naan combination making for the superior chicken dish. Unique flavours continue with the arrival of Paan Sorbet which falls somewhere between sweet, spicy and medicinal, coming to the fore as a palate cleanser presented in a glass tumbler resembling a sea urchin. While the main courses didn’t quite reach the heady heights of the appetisers, the Black Cod was notable purely by the rich gravy of the accompanying Malvani Kokum Curry and the Roganjosh Strudel also makes for a bold re-interpretation of the classic Indian dish, encasing the lamb in filo pastry similar to a traditional Austrian strudel. Desserts look to encapsulate the Indian experience, via a Mango Lassi (a yogurt based drink) converted into a mango soft serve ice cream served within a matcha cone - now that’s fusion for you! The

combination of flavours complement one another rather well. Despite a few obvious teething issues, Namak by Kunal Kapur makes for a suitable addition to the dining repertoire at Dusit Thani Abu Dhabi, and it would undoubtedly be our preference when dining at this hotel. Though at times it feels like a jigsaw puzzle, taking the best pieces from other popular Indian concepts (the global-inspired cuisine of Tamba, the bold flavors of Mint Leaf of London and the playful plating of Tresind) in a combination which should guarantee sure-fire success. ✤

It is an absolute must to begin with an order of table-side guacamole; smashed avocado, mixed fresh with your choice of flavours (we went for spicy with chilli additions for a little bit of fire on our palates) and served with a generous portion of tortilla chips. Be careful, it’s very tempting to keep going

with the guac, it’s just SO good, but keep some space for the main event. Vegetarian eaters will fall head-over-heels in awe with the Tlacoyos De Frijol Negro, topped with the most drool-worthy chipotle black beans puree – luckily, the portion is large enough to share (though you might not want to). Serving Mexican food-lovers of the UAE a massive feast, guests can gorge on more recently incorporated, genuine dishes such as Chilaquiles Rojos Tazajo with beef tenderloin, chilli sauce, black beans puree, fried egg and fresh cheese. If you’re a meat fan, this is the winter warmer you need in your life, pronto. Other options include the ever-popular Tamales Yucatecos, the Pollo En Mole – a chicken dish with Loca mole, served on buttered spinach and zucchini, and one of our absolute favourites; the Sabana, a simply-seasoned piece of meat with salad, that could turn anyone into a Mexican food lover. All praise aside, it was the sheer delight. It’s packaged as a nice deep-fried snack, and it tastes more like a BOSS dish,

controlling and commanding all of our attention with every bite we take – an excellent choice for those who may not be so familiar with Mexican fare. Those with a sweet-tooth can end the hearty culinary experience with a delicious Tres-Leches – a traditional three-milk cake served with chocolate ice-cream. Or, for something with a little for textural flair, go for the incredible Banana Empanada or the Fried Ice Cream – both will please with their realiable, familiar yet very tasty flavours. The food can be savoured in alongside house pour spirits, 39 varieties of craft ales and an array of flavourful margaritas. Guests will find themselves wanting to carry on the fun into the evening, as happy hour continues every day from Sunday to Saturday, with 20 per cent off on selected beverages from 5pm until 8pm. Need we say it? It’s time to go loca for Loca! ✤

DECADENT DELIGHTS Iridium Spa at The St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort has the perfect treatments to indulge you and pamper you this festive season, as FACT’s Angela Beitz finds out…

I

f you’re in need of some serious pampering then we can hand-on-heart guarantee that you will love some time at the luxurious Iridium Spa. This spa needs no introduction, it’s the beautiful building to the right of The St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort and the great news is that they’ve just introduced a new treatment menu. The result-driven spa has created a brandnew menu of exclusive wellness rituals that focus on the concept of ‘time dedicated to you’. As soon as you step into the venue you will feel tranquil and relaxed. The sound of water falling puts you in a zen mood almost instantly. We are ushered to the changing rooms and would be happy to even just spend the afternoon here with a sauna, steam room and whirlpool. The changing rooms are truly beautiful with art deco interiors and large black chandeliers that are totally Instagrammable. Be sure to bring your bathers so that you can enjoy these facilities as they are super lovely and will get you in the right frame of mind for your spa treatment. The whirlpool is a must. We are trying the Rose and Diamond ritual which is a treatment carefully designed for a full body pampering session that guarantees outstanding restorative effects, providing dramatic results. The ritual involves a body scrub, full body massage

and facial and is three hours of total bliss using products that contain rose and diamonds (would you believe?). We are shown to the treatment room and our feet are scrubbed and then dried off. We lay on the massage table and our body is scrubbed all over using the most divine rose formula. The therapist does a great job to get the skin super smooth and the product is really beautiful. This also gets our blood circulation going and then it’s into the shower to rinse off before our massage. We lay back down on the treatment table and a Deep Stimulating Massage is followed to help our sore muscles to relax. After each part of the body is massaged, the diamond oil is rubbed in at the end which leaves our now very smooth skin glowing with flecks of light. This is a very decadent massage and we love the way our skin feels afterwards. Then comes the facial which again uses rose and diamond products and really works to nourish and hydrate the dry skin. Our complexion is firm and plump and truly glowing; we love that this facial gives instant results. This is a head-to-toe approach and is a complete spa experience. The new menu is the perfect combination of results-driven treatments and decadent pampering treats, and we are seriously impressed. ✤

NAILED IT Pamper and restore yourself at the popular Abu Dhabi salon, aptly called Nails. FAC T’s Angela Beitz discovers a realm of zen…

W

e arrive at the doors of Nails to find a lovely spa, with a bright an airy feel and touches of burgundy, purple and blue. We are visiting the Al Muhairy branch but Nails also has branches at Nation Towers, Souk Qaryat Al Beri and Abu Dhabi Mall. Nails needs no introduction as it was the first nail salon in the capital and has established itself as one of the best in the city. The are experts in all things nails as the name suggests but they also have all sorts of treatments on offer, from waxing, facials, massages and more. We decide on the hot stone massage and then a facial which has been recommended to us as two of the most popular treatments. We start with the hot stone massage and the therapist quickly gets to work on our sore muscles. First we are massaged with an oil to loosen our muscles and to get us relaxed and then the hot stones are worked over muscles. The heat from the hot stones works to loosen the knots and kinks further by getting deeper into the muscle tissue. Particular attention is paid to the neck, shoulders and back where the main tension is and after this area is done, the hot stones are left on our body to further relax us while are legs are tended to. This massage is amazing and perfect for anyone that sits down all day at their workplace and for tight and sore muscles. It almost acts like a detox for your whole body and is a next level massage to try and help to release muscle pain and tension. We then try the facial to sort out our skin which has been a bit oily and congested of late and needs a good deep cleanse. The effects of stress from working long hours along with environmental factors here in Abu Dhabi can really show on your face. This facial works to help to purify your skin and get it glowing again while hydrating it at the same time. We relax on the treatment table and our therapist starts with a cleanse of the skin and then a toner is used to remove impurities. She explains that our skin is combination and will aim to put balance back into it. The face is steamed and then extractions are performed followed by an exfoliator and mild peel, all topped off with a hydrating serum that is massaged into the face. A hydrating and balancing mask is then applied, finished off with moisturiser and spf. This is a results-oriented treatment designed to immediately revive and illuminate dull, stressed skin. We can highly recommend it. The experience at Nails is finished with the perfect mani/pedi, which is what they do best, and we leave with moisturised hands and feet and shiny, long-lasting nails. Our time spent at Nails has been nothing short of bliss, especially as the salon uses highquality products and the staff are friendly and very professional. We’ll be back! ✤

FRESH FACED Breathe life back into your skin with a Linda Meredith Oxygen Facial at Scintilla Spa FACT’s Angela Beitz went to experience it…

W

e've had our fair share of facials over the years but every now and then we experience one that leaves our skin looking amazing for days afterwards and it’s then you really know the difference between a standard and a hig-quality treatment. The Linda Meredith Facial at Scintilla Skincare Spa in Muroor (they also have a another location on Reem Island which is a beauty salon) is what we’re trying. The beautiful space with lots of white, chic armchairs, mirrors and orchids, quickly makes us feel relaxed. We chat through our concerns with the therapist and fill out a consultation form. Our complexion is feeling a little oily and congested on the T-zone and dry elsewhere so this is why they've chosen the Oxygen Facial for us - to get some balance back into the skin. The therapist is attentive and lovely and talks us through all the steps that she will be doing which is good to know that the staff are knowledgeable and caring. The Linda Meredith facials really tap into key concerns and you'll see instant results. Oxygen is nature’s most powerful healing element and has been used in the medical industry on various skin conditions for many years. It was introduced into the beauty industry in the 1990’s and Linda Meredith in Knightsbridge was the first to introduce it in the UK. Along with the Linda Meredith Oxygen Serum, this procedure visibly plumps and firms the skin, and this can be seen with just one treatment. We lay on the treatment bed which is comfortable with a duvet and lots of cushioning. These facials have been designed to create a unique treatment for each client by addressing their individual requirements. The skin is cleansed on the surface followed by a second deeper cleanse. Then a thorough consultation is carried out by the therapist to assess any skin problems and it's evident we have some small fine lines and some pigmentation issues. A scrub is then applied to our face to kill dead skin cells and a boosting serum is applied to plump the skin, which is then steamed to open pores and extractions are done. This is followed by a natural micro-peel serum which removes dead cells and cleans deep beneath the surface. The oxygen is applied all over our face and neck in small on and off motions – it feels cool and refreshing. Next, a beautiful hydrating mask is applied to our complexion while our shoulders and arms are massaged. We leave feeling totally relaxed and our skin is bright, plump and clear. ✤
