There's No One Butter Than You

As you wish" – The Princess Bride

E

very year when Valentine’s Day edges closer, it gets me thinking about what this one day in the calendar that’s “designed” to celebrate love, means to different people. Is it spending time with your special someone, is it a reminder about all the important people in their lives, or is it simply a chance to exchange gifts and see which one of you put a bigger price tag on love? In a recent podcast episode by This American Life, the theme was apt for February listening – it looked at the unfolding of rom-com film plot lines: there’s a meet-cute (characters meet in an appealing way), then come obstacles (things stopping them from being together), there’s a “run towards love” where one character literally sprints through the streets to declare their feelings to the other, and finally there’s the end of the film which is usually the beginning of the relationship. And voila, you have yourself a rom-com. The podcast questioned how realistic this depiction of love is - how many of you have ran at marathon speed to the other side of town and proclaimed their love? (I mean, good for you if that’s how things went down!) – but I’m guessing that the majority of people have had less “Hollywood” versions of a love story. So, much like rom-coms, Valentine’s Day could well be seen as another commercial fad – but just like you fall for the story and invest in the protagonists of an on-screen romance, chances are that the hype around V-Day has also captured your heart (and pockets). And, when in Abu Dhabi, you don’t do Valentine’s Day by halves. It’s all or nothing. To show you that we do indeed Love You A Latte, turn to p20 and read about some of the most romantic, cute, delicious, and extravagant offers to book this Valentine’s Day. There are dinner dates, spa escapes, luxury gifts, staycation ideas, beach dining and so much more – there’s no shortage of ways to impress this month. We also play a little bit with Valentine’s Day in Scope or Nope, pitting your star signs for and against your love radar – what’s in store for you in 2019 – find out on p36. Our Staycation Spotlight comes from just an hour up the road and what is our favourite five-star hangout in the DIFC area, The Ritz-Carlton DIFC, where the team and service truly excels (p42). Expect a healthy dose of fashion, beauty, food and wellness too. Big love to all the couples out there. Singles, there’s nothing better than Netflix and Deliveroo. Until next time…☺

THE LANGUAGE OF FLOWERS Flower meanings and symbolisation were a key element to flower choice many years ago. The flower type and colour all represent different feelings dating back to old-school traditions, so if you’re planning on buying a loved- one a beautiful bunch of flowers this V-Day, take a look at which stem will help you convey the right message...

ORCHID

The orchid is a mature flower and like its elegant appearance, the flower signifies exotic beauty, refinement and glorious femininity. This doesn’t mean that only older couples buy orchids, for the flower can be used to greet a beautiful lady, to show love, thoughtfulness, and if you’re using it in Chinese terms, it stands for ‘many children.’

HYACINTH

A flower made of tiny flowers, just as a hyacinth is an intriguing and pleasant flower, its meanings are also quite enjoyable. This flower symbolises playfulness, haste and downright attitude. The blue hyacinth shows loyalty; the purple is for sorrow, red or pink for play, white for loveliness and yellow for jealousy.

ROSE

Definitely the most popular choice of flower to buy on valentine’s Day, the Rose comes in a variety of colours, each representing different meanings. The red rose conveys romantic love as the colour red is associated with stimulating brain wave activity, increasing heart rate, respirations and blood pressure – this is basically for the flower to say ‘I love you!’ purple roses signify that the giver has fallen in love with the recipient at first sight. Coral and orange roses signal desire. Yellow roses stand for joy and friendship, whereas Pink roses express appreciation and a White rose is a sign of humility. 34

fact magazine

CHRYSANTHEMUM

IRIS

Not only is it the emblem of France, but the Iris embodies eloquence. The purple Iris is symbolic of wisdom and compliments; the blue one stands for faith and hope, while the yellow means passion and the white iris is for purity. This is the flower you gift to show wisdom, valour and compliments.

It’s a mouthful to say, but Chrysanthemum is a pretty flower, that usually takes a back seat to the Carnation. This flower often stands for joy, optimism and perfection. You would give the Chrysanthemum to show loyalty, happiness and to wish long life. A red chrysanthemum conveys love; a white chrysanthemum symbolises truth and faithful love, while a yellow chrysanthemum depicts slighted love (let’s hope you don’t have to give any of those).

VALENTINE’S •

TULIP

This is not only the flower emblem of Holland, but the Tulip carries much significance. In general, tulips stand for fame and a perfect love. If you get a bunch of red tulips this valentine’s Day then be pleasantly surprised, because this flower is a declaration of love, straight up. If your bouquet is multicoloured tulips, then the sender is complementing your beautiful eyes, whereas yellow tulips say you have a sunshine in your smile, or that you are the object of a hopeless love.

GERBERA

Just one gerbera in a bouquet of flowers can make someone smile, that’s right, this flower very specifically conveys cheerfulness. It belongs to the daisy family, so also shares meanings of innocence, purity, love and loyalty.

PEONY

Let’s get the bad out of the way – a peony has been long-known to symbolise shame, HOWEvER, this flower also doubles as positive meanings too. The peony represents compassion, happy life, happy marriage, good health and prosperity. We’re sure that adding a few pretty pink ones won’t mess up the bouquet.

LILY

CARNATION

Like the Rose, the Carnation flower comes in a number of colours and definitely covers many emotions and feelings. generally, Carnations were given as a sign of fascination, pride and beauty. give a pink Carnation and you’re telling the receiver that you’ll never forget them; a red one and you’ll be showing your admiration for someone; a white Carnation has a number of meanings attached to it including, sweet and lovely, innocence, pure love, and good luck. On the opposite end is the yellow Carnation which, traditionally, signifies rejection or disappointment (you don’t want to be receiving a bunch of those!).

Have you noticed that a big bunch of flowers always needs a lily or two to make it complete? Well, this beautiful flower can bring a number of meanings to your floral message. It generally applauds purity and refined beauty. The white lily shows modesty, the orange lily stands for passion, while Lily of the valley symbolises sweetness and purity of heart. This one’s great for both lovers and friends.

PANSY

Typically a garden flower, the Pansy is a small and pretty choice that signifies loving thoughts. A modest flower, it’s often called ‘viola’ or ‘violet’ and portrays your faithfulness to the recipient.

SUNFLOWER

Big and beautiful, the sunflower and its bright yellow petals can liven up any floral gift. It represents pure thoughts, adoration and dedication to love - a great choice for a close friend or loved one. ✤

Look for reliable mates who are sincere in love partnerships. Remember to build on your relationships with extra care, trust and romance. If you’re single, there is a strong likelihood of you meeting an old school friend.

In 2019, you will become more romantic, and filled with compassion towards your beloved. You will probably begin to make more sacrifices for the person you love, but the problem is that you will offer up too much for little in return.

J HORROR-SCOPE Love is a wonderful thing that can truly change your life for the better. However, the chances of this happening to you anytime before 2020 are so remote that you might as well quit looking, go home and eat ice cream until you get brain freeze.

This will be the year you finally have committed relationships with people you trust. The months of April and May are suitable for chasing and making new romantic alliances. Singles, it’s a good time to settle down for life. J HORROR-SCOPE Your commitment phobia gets stronger this year. Patience and tolerance is the key word for you to achieve success in relationships this year. Do spend ample time with your partner even if your spirit is weighed down heavily. A lot of socialising will help single Sags bag a potential partner. J HORROR-SCOPE Love sucks. Admit it. All that waiting, the getting to know each other, the sharing – so boring. It’s 2019, if you want to be a free spirit then spread your wings and say bye-bye-bye to the person holding you down. Singles, stay single.

Pisces ♥ LOVESCOPE

Get your romance on before June because Saturn will steal your time away and push back into hard-hitting career mode until September. There is no lack of opportunities for passion, the only question is, are you ready to let go of your fierce independence?

2019 is auspicious in matters of love and romance. After August, planets favour formation of relationships without much effort. Those in a confused situation will finally make the right decision in love. Singles, get out there and mingle.

J HORROR-SCOPE Love comes in all shapes and sizes. By the time you come to yours, all the good shapes and sizes will have gone. You may find love in unexpected places; however, it is equally likely that you’ll find love on ebay, for sale, at very low prices.

J HORROR-SCOPE This is probably, actually, definitely, going to be your unluckiest year of love, ever. Alienate yourself from everyone. Singletons, it looks like another year of buying yourself birthday gifts and parties for one. ✤ fact magazine

A soothing mixture of old and new vibes, the mesmerising song is all about the sacrifices we make in love. Enriching the R&B, soul and hip-hop landscape, the album sees Banks venturing out of his comfort zone and showcasing his talent in ways he never has before. Kumbaya, the album’s first duet, borrows vocals from GermanAmerican singer Bibi Bourelly. Opening with a repetitive acoustic guitar, the song presents a rapturous harmonisation by the two singers. Halfway between a love ballad and campfire song, it delivers a message of love and unity. Showcasing a transformative vibe throughout the album, Jacob Banks is definitely showing a musical side we have never witnessed before.

O

ver brunch at Flair No.5, The Ritz-Carlton DIFC’s foliage-filled rooftop restaurant, our dining companion tells us that she has a high-rolling friend who practically lives at the hotel. She’s tried countless competitors in the area but comes back every time because of the unbeatable service. American tycoon and founder of J.C Penney, James Cash Penney, famously said: “Courteous treatment will make a customer a walking advertisement.” It is evident, during our two-night stint at the five-star hotel located in Dubai’s Financial District that this ethos beats at the heart of every member of The RitzCarlton DIFC team. But first impressions first, which begin as our taxi swings into the hotel’s impressive black marble entrance courtyard – to the right a cluster of alfresco tables are filled with the buzz of locals and visitors enjoying coffee and freshly-baked treats at casual ground floor café Cake. In the gleaming lobby, a small gaggle of guests are lining up to

check in but, to our surprise (its 2pm on a Friday – AKA peak tourist time), we’re waiting barely ten seconds before we’re ushered to the front and embark on the first of many delightful encounters with the efficient and friendly staff. Our 7th floor Premier Room is probably the only part of The RitzCarlton DIFC experience that doesn’t feel entirely polished. Its size (huge bed decked with that five-star linen that never feels the same at home, imposing dark-wood desk, silk-lined window-seat flanking one wall) is more than generous, and the cleverly designed bathroom gleams with the luxury of stainless steel and marble, but the décor feels a bit… tired. Like everything in Dubai, it’s hardly old (the hotel is currently celebrating its 8th anniversary) and although it's a beautiful space, there is certainly room for décor revamps. That being said, we sleep like a baby on a mattress fit for a princess and love the bathrobe so much we mourn having to get out of it and down to breakfast on both mornings. fact magazine

Which brings us nicely to the cuisine, an area where The Ritz-Carlton DIFC team earns every corner of those five stars. Our two-day hotel restaurant safari begins with The Secret Garden Brunch at Flair No.5 (helpfully named for those, like us, who never listen when they tell you which floor a restaurant is on). Taking place every Friday from 12pm to 5pm, this is very much a party brunch, which becomes clear the moment you step into the urban garden and hear it before you see it. The visuals might be delayed by the insistent beat of the Resident DJ, but they are worth the wait – the al fresco bar-cumrestaurant is teaming with photo-ops, from suspended floral garlands to oversized pots filled with wide-leafed plants creating an evergreen backdrop - stunning. Brunch at Flair No.5 is a high-octane few hours, a steady parade of sharing dishes served straight to the low-tables of raised lounge seating. It’s a format of which we

approve wholeheartedly, meaning we can perch happily watching expert-waiters whip up impressively named cocktails at the bar and sharply dressed regulars abandoning the eating part to dance and mingle in the melee. Highlights from the menu include crisp balls of arancini rich with mushroom and oozing with sharp Taleggio, firm lamb koftas kicked into gear by a sauce singing with cumin and mint, a selection of brightly-flavoured salads – one with burrata that is impossible to leave alone – and some seriously spicy and deliciously sticky chicken skewers. To finish, try to stop talking long enough to sample the fun ice pops (we didn’t and ended up with brain freezes from trying to save passion fruit stains on our skirts). A different experience but equally compelling, was Saturday Brunch at Le Cirque. Billed as a New York-based modish eatery and sister restaurant to its same-named Big Apple counterpart, it’s a classy affair and one that does bring to mind previous visits to NYC’s Upper East Side. Like any fine-dining restaurant worth its stark white table cloths, the service is immaculate – the black waistcoated waiters clearly trained to be charming, swift and completely unobtrusive. Wondering past a decidedly more refined clientele than the day before (no pumping music here, the Resident DJ is replaced with a resident clown as part of Le Cirque’s circus themed brunch) we spot wealthy doyens of Dubai and elegant families chattering cheerfully. Everything we sample from a set menu of eggs, main dishes, pastas and decadent desserts is top notch – a basket bulging with still-warm croissants, fluffy muffins and pastries oozing with fruit being an excellent start. Still full from the previous day, we kept it light with a sunshine yellow asparagus frittata and crunchy tuna fact magazine

nicoise but would recommend settling in for a few hours to tuck into the Whole Roasted Striploin with Roasted Potatoes and Lemon Meringue Pie. Our final Ritz-Carlton DIFC excursion comes in the form of a 60-minute massage at the spa. As to be expected by now, the wellness team is thorough and thoughtful – checking genuinely that any preferences are noted. The treatment itself is faultless, our small but powerful therapist determinedly kneading away any stress-induced knots with expert hands. Floating out in a cloud of lavender, we make the most of the steam room and serene relaxation area to maximise on detoxing time. The next morning, after another deep slumber, a farewell breakfast and an internal struggle not to steal that bathrobe, we find ourselves being speedily checked out by the same smiling team member we encountered 48 hours earlier. She’s not only as efficient as we remember, but genuinely concerned that our stay has been everything we wanted it to be. Leaving the lobby for the reality of our own apartment, we feel a tinge of envy for that lucky lady that lives there and can’t help but agree with JC Penny: if courteous treatment is the answer to good PR, then we should all be talking about the excellent team and service at The Ritz-Carlton DIFC. ✤

9 NEW DINING DESTINATIONS FOR 2019 A new year signals a fresh start and a number of new openings to look forward to in the UAE. From 5-star hotels to luxury developments, one of our favourite, reliable food experts in the country runs down the nine new dining destinations that you should all be looking forward to visiting in 2019 – courtesy of David Tapley of Out & About UAE… SALAMA’S Now open in Abu Dhabi’s Al Bateen Marina, Salama’s offers a culinary journey around the world courtesy of Chef Stephan Benkendorff (previously of JW Steakhouse at the Marriott Downtown). The food is global but with a distinct Emirati twist resulting in dishes such as Salama’s Signature Machsotto, a fusion of Italian Risotto and Emirati Machboos or the Marhaba Aloha Trifle, a camel milk sorbet with pineapple compote, coconut and meringue. GO: Call (0)2 563 9484 for more info.

EMERALD PALACE BY KEMPINSKI The latest hotel from Kempinski opened on the West Crescent of the Palm Jumeirah at the end of November and boasts a number of exciting dining options. Matagi is a contemporary Pan-Latin steakhouse laid out around a central show kitchen. Villamore promises sophisticated luxury via a combination of Mediterranean cuisine and exceptional views. Finally, Mix by Alain Ducasse is set over 3 floors with inspired French cuisine and some of the most unique interior design elements that we’ve seen in a while. GO: Call (0)4 444 2000 for more info.

THE ABU DHABI EDITION The Abu Dhabi Edition is now open in Al Bateen and represents a property that has been well-worth the wait. The small hotel is a unique entity in Abu Dhabi and feels very boutiquey. With the F&B spearheaded by Tom Aikens (the youngest British chef ever to be awarded two Michelin stars) there’s a lot of excitement surrounding British rock and roll steakhouse The Oak Room (review coming soon) and its unique cuts which include Spanish Rubia and Master Kobe. Italian spot Alba Terrace offers al fresco dining and a charming Mediterranean menu and we can also vouch for the fresh and organic produce from Market at The Edition, making a great new breakfast spot for Abu Dhabians. GO: Call (0)2 208 0000 for more info.

BLUEWATERS DUBAI The new lifestyle destination off the coast of JBR is home to Ain Dubai, the world’s largest observation wheel, alongside a number of exciting new dining destinations. First to open was Gordon Ramsay’s Hells Kitchen Dubai. Drawing inspiration from the celebrity chefs television show of the same name, competing teams will serve up signature dishes from the Las Vegas location such as Beef Wellington, eggs in purgatory and sticky toffee pudding! Next up is The London Project, described as “The ultimate curation of London cool, a destination dedicated to the very finest in food, drink, art, culture & unparalleled hospitality.” Finally, Alici is set to open in early 2019 and comes to us from the team behind popular Italian restaurant Il Burro Tuscan Bistro. The new venture promises seafood inspired by Italy’s Amalfi Coast and we simply cannot wait. GO: Visit www.bluewatersdubai.ae for more info.

W THE PALM The new W Hotel on the Palm Jumeirah is opening with at least two (that we know of) new F&B concepts. Torno Subito is an Italian concept from chef Massimo Bottura who you may recognise as the man behind the world’s number one restaurant of 2018 – Osteria Francescana. Translating to “I’ll be right back” this Dubai project marks Bottura’s first restaurant outside of Italy. Chef Akira Back will also bring his distinct Asian cuisine to the property. Back’s global portfolio includes restaurants in Jakarta, Bali, Bangkok, Las Vegas and Seoul (with the latter recently awarded a coveted Michelin Star) and we’re very excited to see what the first Middle Eastern outpost for this celebrity chef looks (and tastes) like. • LIFESTYLE JUMEIRAH SAADIYAT ISLAND RESORT Jumeirah’s second foray into the capital brings us the Jumeirah Saadiyat Island Resort with its selection of dining options set against the azure waters of the Arabian Gulf. Italian restaurant Mare Mare serves traditional and simplistic dishes close to the resorts swimming pool, while Tean is a Levantine restaurant bringing all your Arabic favourites with a contemporary twist. Look out for an additional desert property, Jumeirah Al Wathba in the first quater of 2019 too. GO: Call (0)2 811 5555 for more info. YAS MARINA Two new openings at Abu Dhabi’s Yas Marina have gotten the capital into quite a frenzy and although both The Scene and Mr. Miyagi’s have been doing strong business in Dubai for some time now it’s Abu Dhabi’s turn to get in on the action. The Scene by Simon Rimmer is famous for its weekend roasts and looks to bring a typical British gastropub to Yas Island. In direct contrast, Mr. Miyagi’s uses Asian street food and bucket cocktails to replicate the feeling of Bangkok’s Khao San Road or the full moon parties of Koh Phangan. Our recent visit had us caught up in karaoke and all sorts of fun… GO: Visit www.yasmarina.ae for more info.

MANDARIN ORIENTAL JUMEIRA, DUBAI Located on the sixth floor of the soon-toopen Mandarin Oriental Jumeira. Tasca is the brainchild of culinary mastermind José Avillez and is named after the Portuguese word for tavern. Tasca will mark the chef’s first international opening, following Michelin-starred Belcanto and diners can expect genuine Portuguese flavours with a contemporary twist. The hotel will also bring us Netsu, a Japanese Steakhouse from acclaimed chef Ross Shonhan that will Showcase the traditional Japanese cooking technique of Warayakiya – straw fire cooking! GO: Call (0)4 342 7646 for more info.

CIBONEY’S With the arrival of Miss Lily’s and Ting Irie, it would appear that Dubai has finally worken up to the charms of Carribean food (and rum). It’s pleasing to see cuisine making a resurgence in the city with the opening of Ciboneys which will open soon in DIFC. An innovative Caribbean restaurant, bar and lounge will offer a relaxed sharing style service in a lovely atmosphere, which will exude the vibrancy of the Caribbean in an opulent colonial style setting. CLASS MEETS POWER: RANGE ROVER SPORT AUTOBIOGRAPHY

The luxury SUV has upped its on-road game thanks to the craftsmanship, technology and its ability to epitomise everything that Range Rover represents. FACT takes the Range Rover Sport Autobiography for a spin…

fact magazine

59

• CITY RIDES

I

t’s easy to approach the Range Rover Sport Autobiography with a heaping dose of scepticism, it’s a large and super luxury SUV that comes in a slightly smaller package. Our first thought is – aah, it’s made for ladies who lunch, gents casually strolling down to the local golf club or young drivers going to grab coffee from the coolest café in town. But then you climb in and remember what makes sitting behind the wheel of a Range Rover so enjoyable: the plushness, the unfussy layout, the richness of the materials. And then you drive it, feel the solidity of the chassis under your seat, bask in its balletic manner even as it manages all that heft, soak up the quietness of the cabin at speed and think, “Everyone needs to drive one of these.” For a place like the UAE, where the car you drive can speak volumes about everything from your career to your lifestyle, your interests and your social scene, the Range Rover Sport Autobiography was clearly built to give drivers the elegance they so crave teamed with the top-notch performance they so need. On one hand, the Autobiography option checks almost every box when it comes to the cabin and features which includes a premium audio system and controls, a sliding glass roof, softclose doors and perforated leather seats. On the other hand, the car features a 5.0-litre supercharged V8 pumping out 510hp and enough drive modes to defeat any terrain. It works with an admirable eight-speed automatic transmission that can include paddle shifters - the 60-mph sprint takes a mere 5 seconds with a V8. It’s like the partner of your dreams – only it will never argue with you about which songs to play during your leisurely drives around town! Anyone familiar with the Range Rover Sport models will immediately recognise the Autobiography’s more aggressive looking front face that makes it look sportier than the luxurious looking flagship Range Rover. The large wheels, the floating roof and the distinctive signature LED DRLs create a unique aura around the Range Rover Sport to help build a sporty, yet luxurious exterior. The cabin features a wonderfully clean layout with simple, easy-to-use controls that are ergonomically well placed. Also the right use of soft-touch materials, the leather stitched instrument panels create a wonderfully plush interior that leaves very little to complain about. There is more than enough space in the front and second rows, with large comfortable seats and lots of headroom. The cargo has plenty of storage space for anyone who can’t yet grasp the meaning of travelling light, which works great for UAE road trips and staycations. The cabin is quiet, as expected, and in sportier modes this Range almost feels quick on its feet. Body roll, similarly, is dampened in those higher modes. We didn't have any crazy weather to speak of, but when it did get a little breezy or we shortcut on the pavement, the car drove more than fine. Ideally, it would be an absolute blast to get the Autobiography off-road sooner rather than later. All petrol and diesel engines in the Range Rover Sport models are paired with an electronically controlled ZF eight-speed automatic gearbox. True to the Sport tag, the Autobiography 60

fact magazine

handles really well at highway speeds, and with the 4WD, we’re sure that it is also equally competent offroad – this is what makes the car unique amongst a sea of road-focussed SUVs. Safety features on the Range Rover Sport Autobiography, and all other Range Rover Sport models includes automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, rearview camera, surround-view camera (not standard on SE or HSE), parking sensors, parking assist, and automatic high-beam headlights. An optional Driver Assistance Package adds blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, and traffic sign recognition that can display the current speed limit. This might sound like the standard of what to expect but let us tell you – this car is SHARP. Take the drive from Dubai down to Abu Dhabi, we don’t have to remind you how often careless drivers can ruin your driving experience. In the Autobiography, the lane departure warning worked a treat, especially if you’re forced to move out of the way of a huge tank of steel constantly flashing you so they can get ahead. Equally useful is the speed limit monitoring which seemed to have all the updates to match the most current rules for UAE roads – something we were especially grateful for! Back inside the luxurious cabin, the touchscreens with the Touch Pro Duo system are canted toward the driver. Lo and behold there are dials that control different functions for the menu selected. Infotainment is at its peak with everything from being able to sync your phone, contacts, music and so on, as well as handling terrain management. Chassis/drivetrain/engine modes are sport, comfort and eco; and off-road modes are snow, sand, mud, and rock or crawling. What strikes us most about the Range Rover Sport Autobiography is its craftsmanship. Rome wasn’t built in a day and neither was this car. The fit and finish is excellent and the fittings top-notch – in fact, we were quite happy doing everything from running errands to attending business meeting and being the designated driver for an evening out with friends – simply to showcase how practical and beautiful the interior is. High-quality materials abound, whether leather, wood, metal, or plastic. If it looks like wood, it is wood. If it looks like metal, it's metal. They all look great and feel good. Even the cargo area is attractively finished. In front it feels just like the Range Rover, with a big view of the road, but the Sport's seats are a bit more cockpitlike. Not that we’re complaining because leg room is more than comfortable! When it comes to standout reasons for loving this car, it is always going to be the stellar power and good stopping force. The Range Rover Sport Autobiography really can do it all. It’s like the most stylish hustler on the roads; sweet on the eye and ferocious on the streets. There’s no compromise with this vehicle and it has little to no rivals in our books – book a test drive and see for yourself. ✤

Transforming everyday mundane to musical mastery, the Beosound Edge is surprisingly powerful despite its compact footprint. To deliver a commanding sound experience at high volume, Beosound Edge debuts a ground-breaking acoustical technology named the Active Bass Port. The Active Bass Port unites two classical concepts of loudspeaker design, the so-called “closed-box” design and the “ported design”. Apart from an incredible sensory experience, the Beosound Edge brings forward a timeless design masterpiece that has never been seen before in home audio. Adding an element of magic, Bang & Olufsen has built the physical touch interface into the aluminium frame by lasering microscopic holes invisible to the eye, just allowing light to shine through. To contrast the polished aluminium body, Beosound Edge comes with a matte black fabric cover, easily exchangeable, as Bang

& Olufsen will introduce new on-trend fabric colours over time. The Beosound Edge also comes with 360-degree room filling sound from both sides of the speaker, and the new Directional Sound Control allows the user to define the direction that the sound radiates creating two acoustic fronts. This ensures that a room can be divided into an active listening area and a more passive listening area. Controlling the directional sound is made easy through the Bang & Olufsen app. Allowing you freedom of connectivity, Beosound Edge comes with the major industry standard technologies to provide the best streaming experience. Enjoy the streaming service of your choice including AirPlay 2, Chromecast and Bluetooth. Ushering in a new generation of audio, clarity, precision and design, the Beosound Edge is a total game changer. Letting you skip, start and stop tracks with a simple tap on the touch sensitive aluminium surface, the speaker makes listening to music so much easier and gratifying. In the words of talent show judges everywhere: “It’s a yes from us!” ✤

For the Spring/Summer 2019 collections for men and women, Kenzo invites you to celebrate summer ceremonies, gatherings of all sorts and the jubilation of rituals. Occasions where new-romantic hedonists meet British wedding goers and all the in-betweens.

WOMEN For women, Kenzo goes high summer with aplomb. They adore effortless deconstruction and the delicately disordered. They match classic fine fabrics such as a flocked twill with georgette or create an effort in contrasts by matching saturated colours of acid yellow, cobalt or fuchsia with vivid prints of roses or checks. The archive dot prints on layered twill offers extra scope to a traditional summer dress. Coats are embossed with python prints or in pink vinyl. Cocoon bombers play against strict tailored jackets. Voluminous technical nylon dresses with covered buttons in lilac or orange offer ample opportunity for fluid movement. Guipure embroideries appear in Victorian tops or overlaid dresses. For women’s accessories, Kenzo introduces two new styles: the dot and the goody, infused in both the bags and footwear of rubberised chunky platforms and contrast kitten heels. Geometric earrings compliment the more ornate embroidered jewellery. ✤

AMAL SHINE With the award-winning and leading voice of fashion and lifestyle in the UAE capital, Amal Salameh. ECO STAYCATION Two years ago, I had an outdoor wedding on Saadiyat Island with the open beach as my backdrop and the sunset awaiting me for my grand entrance to my beloved guests. For my second-year wedding anniversary, I wanted to celebrate the picture perfect sunset, panoramic views, and the beach, during a staycation. Thankfully, my anniversary coincided beautifully with the opening of the muchanticipated Jumeirah at Saadiyat Island - and it was love at first sight. Once you enter the lobby you will be in awe of the jaw-dropping turquoise blue interiors and ceiling which is inspired by the sea; this is the first luxury resort in Abu Dhabi that is sustainable and super eco-friendly where no single-use plastics are found and every guest is gifted a water bottle to refill at water stations at their own needs – plastic free paradise! With our water bottles in hand, we head upstairs to our room where the wow factor continued with accommodation overlooking the ocean through a massive balcony with floor-to-ceiling glass doors that you can slide open from both ends and can literally hear the sound of the waves crashing which doubles as sound therapy. Our culinary journey at the resort started with Mare Mare for lunch, first time there and definitely coming back to this Italian gem. Besides the drool-worthy pizza, risotto and seafood platter we had an exquisite Italian experience alongside a gorgeous view by the infinity pool which directly overlooks the open beach – I am a sucker for sea views. Another restaurant worth mentioning is Tean; serving Levantine cuisine with a contemporary twist - and it works. Expect Wagyu beef for your Shish Kebabs, the popular Arabic fatoush salad served with shrimps, pastry stuffed with kale and saj bread which is made fresh in-house. Fun fact: Tean means figs in Arabic. A massive breakfast awaited at White the next morning and I piled my plate with the usual suspects such as sausages and an assortment of cheese while I waited for the chef to customise my omelette. We spent the day lazing about the infinity pool and the beach, and then had a buggy ride arranged to take us to their spa which is in another building, so you can imagine how huge the spa facility (and the grounds) are. We opted for a couple’s revitalising massage for 60 minutes and everything from the welcome reception, therapists, massage and the sprawling relaxing area was phenomenal. I think Jumeirah Saadiyat has proved that you CAN do a luxury setting and still be eco-conscious at the same time. Couples looking for V-Day treats – this place is perfect!

Yours fashionably, Amal 78

SOPHISTICATED LEBANESE FARE

Enjoy creative cuisine at one of the Rosewood Abu Dhabi’s best dining destinations. FACT’s Angela Beitz takes a seat at Sambusek…

• CULINARY SPOTLIGHT

T

his city has a lot on offer when it comes to Lebanese cuisine but if you’re looking for an innovative twist on traditional options then Sambusek is your answer. Located at the splendid Rosewood Abu Dhabi on Al Maryah Island, this restaurant boasts a beautiful dining room indoors, magnificent views from the terrace outside and thoughtful service to top off the surroundings. The setting is refined and elegant yet has a lovely relaxed feel to it and it's easily the sort of place you would come to for a leisurely meals, a relaxed drink or a shisha on the terrace. Since the weather called for it, we chose to sit on the terrace on the night we visited and the views over the water looking back on the city are stunning. Heaters and fire pits warm the outdoor terrace and add to the atmosphere of Sambusek. Lighting is low and gorgeous olive trees are dotted around the terrace which we love. The waiter talks us through the menu and suggests some popular dishes and alternatives to the classic Lebanese dishes that you might traditionally opt for; all the usual Lebanese dishes are on offer at Sambusek but there are some really great options that have an innovative spin on the norm, so we'd definitely recommend giving these a go. We started with cold mezze and opted for the smoked hummus which was delicious. This is such a simple dish but the smokiness adds a deeper richness and long-lasting taste. This came served with super warm and fresh Lebanese bread. They have four types of hummus so go for a different variety and treat your taste buds. We also tried the rocca and zaatar salad which was fresh with lots of big rocket leaves, fresh zaatar and a citrus dressing. For the hot mezze we tried traditional kibbeh and sautéed prawns. The kibbeh was perfect, served up with lettuce and pomegranate, and went down nicely with the smoked hummus. The plump and juicy prawns were cooked in a simple but lovely garlic and coriander butter and were a real hit at the table. Feeling satisified so far, it was time to move onto mains. The portions are very generous at Sambusek so come feeling very hungry

82

fact magazine

if you want to sample lots of dishes. We went for grilled lamb chops which were perfectly cooked, nice and tender, and again a large portion along with chicken shish tawook which came with fries. Both were done on the char grill and both meats really retained their flavour. If you can squeeze in dessert then we can definitely recommend the kunafa, Arabic ice cream and Artisan Cheesecake. The whole menu is large and boasts so many enticing options which we love. You could visit again and again just to try new dishes – and you’d never get bored. It's not hard to see why this venue is very popular and has become a real foundation on the Abu Dhabi dining scene; service is very good, the food divine and views stunning. ✤

MEXICAN TWIST Craving Mexican cuisine? FACT's Angela Beitz discovers flavourful and vibrant fare at a city favourite – El Sombrero at the iconic Sheraton Abu Dhabi Hotel & Resort...

fact magazine

85

• VENUE REVIEW

M

exican and Latin cuisine has really taken off in Abu Dhabi over the last couple of years but there's one true mainstay that has firmly held it's ground; El Sombrero. This restaurant at Sheraton Abu Dhabi Hotel & Resort is fun and vibrant and somewhere you'll be guaranteed a good night out. The venue is casual with terracotta decor and bright, coloured tiles on the tables. It has a resident band that play every night except for Saturday and their beats are traditional Mexican rhythms along with current hits. The band really makes the restaurant experience very enjoyable and brings a lively vibe to the atmosphere. El Sombrero has been serving authentic home cooked Latin American dishes for a long time and they have a fantastic Mexican chef who creates delicious food. The key ingredients on the menu - such as maize, beans and premium chilli peppers - are all imported from Mexico which is a nice touch and adds a sense of authenticity for diners. The menu is made up of Tex-Mex favourites that you would expect from any good Mexican restaurant such as burritos, fajitas and tacos and there is also a large offering of very traditional dishes that we were very keen to try. We start off with the Guacamole En El Sombrero which is one of the most popular dishes on the menu. Freshly prepared at our table is ripe avocado, diced onion, tomato, coriander, green chilli and lemon juice served up with fresh tortilla chips. There are no surprises as to why it's a firm favourite, its perfectly balanced and super tasty and such treat to have it prepared in front of us. We also try the Quesadillas where you can choose from chicken, beef, shrimp or vegetable. We go for the chicken and are delighted with the tastiness of the classic flour tortillas with lots of cheese. For mains we go for the Camerones Al Tequila, Pollo Con Mole and Tacos. The Camarones Al Tequila is a large dish of sizzling shrimps with Mexican rice and green salad. The dish arrives flaming to the table and the waiter lights it up on fire in a theatrical motion. It’s delicious in flavour and texture – right on the mark. The Pollo Con Mole is a very traditional Mexican dish of chicken thighs covered with Mole sauce (which is actually a sauce with chocolate in it although it’s more tart than sweet) and is served with Mexican rice and vegetables; a very interesting dish with lots of unusual tastes that go together effortlessly. It’s also nice to try something super authentic. The tacos were also very good with sautéed steak and caramelised onion in a homemade soft corn tortilla – simplicity at its best. We managed to squeeze in dessert, opting for the churros with chocolate sauce which were the perfect end to a fantastic meal. The restaurant also offers a plethora of traditional Mexican and Latin American drinks which go perfectly with the food. El Sombrero has an excellent menu and warm service, making for a reliably fun night out with friends. ✤ 86

All That Jazz We often ask ourselves what elements make up a great night out? Is it good company… Free flowing beverages… A relaxed atmosphere… Bar bites… Live music? For us, it’s an amalgamation of all the above and we’re happy to have found them in abundance at Jazz Bar and Dining, at the Radisson Blu Hotel & Resort Abu Dhabi Corniche. FACT’s David Tapley dines…

A

n Abu Dhabi institution with a winning formula, Jazz Bar sits firmly on the radar of long term Abu Dhabi residents as a unique nightlife spot in the capital. With the hotel having undergone a recent rebrand, Jazz Bar and Dining remains the same, but with a new year comes a new menu and new band. Entering via a narrow passageway, first impressions indicate that little has changed in the look and feel. The venue remains small and intimate while retaining a sultry atmosphere, decked out in a color scheme of a black and white that fits well into the venue’s charming jazz piano facade. Instruments play a significant role, not only in the live entertainment but also in the decor, with saxophones on the walls and a tiled floor resembling the keys of a keyboard. Illuminations in hues of electric purple highlight a semi-circular bar area, behind which lies the stage and the focal point of the restaurant space. Seating is divided into two distinct areas. Around the stage is a bar/lounge area and upon a raised podium lies the restaurant which is a non-smoking zone. The musical theme presides over diners with black and white portraits of some of the world’s most famous jazz musicians and napkins come embroidered with the treble clef note. Monday’s and Wednesday’s coincide with a popular Ladies Night offering a selection of complimentary beverages for ladies and the promotion appears to do a good job of pulling in a lively crowd. As the lights dip and the music

88

fact magazine

starts we find ourselves immediately enraptured, caught up in the melody of a lone saxophonist. Despite the name, the music has always been more than just Jazz, as the energetic band move between old school R&B infused with neo-soul. Things begin wonderfully with a saxophonist meandering through the crowd to dutifully set the tone, before segueing from instrumental Jazz to original versions of tracks such as Alicia Keys’ ‘If I Ain’t Got You’ and Bob Marley’s ‘No Woman, No Cry.’ Despite a meat and seafood heavy menu, Jazz Bar and Dining offers a good selection of food which similar Vasco’s (another of the Radisson Blu’s popular outlets) surpassed our expectations. Portions throughout are large and offer good value for money, especially the appetisers. The chef’s recommendation of Seabass Ceviche (a dish that’s seemingly all the rage at the moment) offers a zesty lime, mango and chili flavour, topped with edible flowers. While the salmon and apple and the delightful seared scallop with sweet potato are likely to please both seafood lovers and the most discerning of diners. Sticking with the chefs recommendation for the main courses. Jazz Bar’s Surf and turf offers up a tender Black Angus tenderloin and delicate Canadian lobster, it’s the perfect match of the meat and seafood with the two focal ingredients working in unison,

FOODIE CORNER •

accompanied by charred asparagus spears and piped mashed potato. The dessert course offers up an audacious golden chocolate sphere. Melted with a warm chocolate sauce, the interior reveals an exciting mix pistachio cream, chocolate ganache, almond crumble, raspberry crisps and cheese kunafa. The result is an overwhelming mix of textures and flavours. It’s easy to see why Jazz Bar & Dining is so popular in the capital. Having won numerous awards and accolades over the years it may be an older venue but it oozes charm and offers up a fun night out on Abu Dhabi’s corniche. Things may kick off a little later in the evening but the crowd is always fun and the location often busy. ✤

SALT OF THE EARTH FACT’s Angela Beitz discovers a rejuvenating massage that also helps you detox, at the five-star Saadiyat Rotana Resort & Villas’ exquisite Zen The Spa....

S

aadiyat Rotana Resort & Villas has quickly become a staple in the capital for its fabulous views and excellent dining venues so I thought it was time to visit their spa. Zen The Spa is tucked away in a corner of the hotel and has a calm and serene atmosphere you would expect from any high-end spa. The reception is large and welcoming and the lovely staff talks through me through the treatment carefully, asking about any areas of concern. The décor is a real haven with beige and sand coloured walls with dark timber accents and pops of blue. The spa is large and as I’m ushered to the changing rooms and marvel at the large open space in the middle of the spa with lots of light and greenery. The changing rooms follow the same format and I slip into a cushy robe and slippers for the massage. I enter the large treatment room which is serene with dark timber and a very calming vibe. I’m trying the Himalayan Pink Stone Healing Massage which is one of the spa's signature treatments. It makes use of warmed Himalayan Pink Salt Stones that are made of rock crystals of salt found in the Himalayan region. These rock crystals are believed to be the purest salt to be found on earth, full of rich minerals that revitalise the body. The treatment combines the warmed Pink Himalayan Stones with a deep tissue massage, helping you remove toxins and eliminate negative energies from the body. The curative qualities in these stones are known to help reduce inflammation, stimulate circulation, calm the nervous system and restore balance of the mind, body and spirit. The Himalayan Stones are warmed like they are with a hot stone massage except they are slightly rough in texture (due to the salt) so your skin is exfoliated while it’s massaged. The therapist starts on my back and the hot salt stones feel amazing. I’m really in need of a deep tissue massage so this is the perfect fix. The combination of the deep massage and then heated salt stones feels like magic and works out all my aches and kinks. The still warm salt stones are then placed and left on the back whilst the rest of the massage continues. Once the massage is complete, my whole body feels completely rejuvenated - it's a next level treatment compared to a standard massage and it's not hard to see why it’s grown in popularity. I rest in the relaxation area which is stunning and full of natural light, looking outside onto a garden, and sipping a ginger tea. I’d recommended to drink a lot of water afterwards as the salt stones detox your body and you need to rehydrate. I leave the lovely spa feeling totally relaxed, definitely recommended. ✤

Spread over two floors, the sanctuary features nine spacious treatment rooms, including one VIP couple’s treatment room as well as indoor and outdoor relaxation zones with the privacy of separate areas for ladies and men. The wellness centre offers an outdoor 25-metre lap pool, an array of hydrotherapy facilities, a manicure and pedicure salon, a fitness room with the latest equipment, a sauna, steam room and whirlpool. When booking a treatment at Atarmia Spa, they give you the option of spending the whole day at the spa to use the facilities which is such a bonus and not done by a lot of other hotels. Whether you want to use the gym, relax in the hydro pool or spend your afternoon at the beautiful private swimming pool, your day will be well spent. I arrive at the spa and are welcomed and given a refreshing hibiscus drink while I wait for my therapist. I’m trying the Illuminating Facial from HydroPeptide which acts to brighten skin and even out your complexion. I’m shown to the treatment room which is spacious and follows the same chic minimalist theme of the overall hotel. I change into a lovely robe and slippers and the therapist scrubs and cleanses my feet. HydroPeptide is a Clinical Skincare line along with advanced Skin Care Treatments offering the latest in beauty technologies and products to improve skin health. The range is result driven and the facial treatments are now available for you to try at the spa. The natural plant based products are all free from harmful preservatives, chemical ingredients, perfumes or additives, yet extremely effective. The Illuminating Facial is a signature therapy which infuses skin with the replenishing benefits of peptides, growth factors and proteins. The therapist identifies my skin’s specific needs and helps to calm the skin as it’s red and irritated. She gives it a thorough cleaning without further inflaming the sensitive areas. After it’s double cleansed twice with the Purifying Cleanser, my face and neck are moisturused. A glycolic peel is then put on the face (the therapist reduces the amount used due to my sensitive skin) and while this if left on to work it's magic our neck and shoulders are massaged. After this is removed, a hydrating serum is then applied and massaged into the face in uplifting motions. This boosts circulation and brightens skin and then extractions are performed to get rid of any gunk. Then a deeply hydrating mask is applied all over the face and neck and my head is massaged gently while the skin is being moisturised. The facial finishes with serums, moisturiser and SPF. After the facial, my skin is clear, glowing and fine lines and wrinkles have been dramatically diminished. ✤

Skin Solutions Looking for a facial that helps your complexion and taps into your specific needs? FACT’s Angela Beitz visits House of Allure for a skin fix.

L

ooking after your skin can be a challenge no matter how hard you try due to lots of exposure to AC and extreme temperatures here in Abu Dhabi. Whether it’s fighting ageing or acne breakouts, pigmentation or dullness, House of Allure and their experts have the solution for you. This gorgeous spa is based in a villa and has an elegant feel to it. The decor is very luxe and the space is large but it's a very inviting spa and you will almost feel like you are stepping into someone's beautiful home. The villa is two floors, all decked out with blue and white downstairs and upstairs where the treatment rooms and hammam are, the space is more serene and calming with low lighting and timber floors. Staff are super welcoming and take care of us from the moment we step inside. The nail spa is downstairs and offers all the usual treatments and there is also a hair area that is super chic where they use premium hair care brands to treat your tresses. You can get everything from a fabulous blow-dry to cut and colour. I head upstairs to the treatment room and the therapist talks through my skin concerns which are dryness and congestion. The spa uses Eminence Organics and also HydroPeptide and the therapist suggests a super deep cleaning facial using HydroPeptide followed by a hydrating facial using HydroPeptide that involves ampules of serums to boost hydration. HydroPeptide uses the power of peptides that work on a cellular level to increase hydration, visibly reduce lines and wrinkles, and enhance skin's natural luminosity. Each treatment and product is filled with wonderful ingredients and formulas that deliver over 60 different peptides in order to best serve the skin’s needs. The room is lovely and relaxing and I can't wait to get my skin sorted out. First, the face is double cleansed and then assessed. Next, the face is steamed to open pores and then the therapist performs the most thorough extractions I've ever had. The machine is used (it works as a vacuuming action to exfoliate dead skin cells and rid the skin of excess oil) to deposit glycolic and salicylic acid onto the skin through the tip, the pore opening is widened, allowing the vacuum suction to dislodge and suck up nastiness from deep inside and oxygen is then put into the skin using a different tool. My face is then massaged with a serum and the final step is a heavy hydrating and balancing mask that was applied over the entire face including eyes and mouth. The mask plumped my skin beautifully and the whole experience left my complexion bright, glowing and refreshed. The hydrating aspect of the facial is much the same except different serums are applied with the machine to really boost the skins hydration and to get right down into the layers of the skin. Both are definitely must-try facials and are great for all skin types, ready to replenish your skin with the moisture it craves living in the UAE, and the deep cleaning it needs regularly to maintain a balanced complexion. ✤
