hen you hear the word love what do you think of ? For me, it’s family, friends, memories of good times, and the excitement of what’s to come. But, mostly, it’s the love of good food and my favourite TV shows (who’s
excited for Game of Thrones to start… two months to go!). The point is,
love means different things to different people, so as we step into February, the “official” month of love, make sure you’re celebrating exactly how you want to!
FACT is here to help you make the perfect plans for Valentine’s Day; we’ve divided this issue into three sections – for him, for her, and the usual stuff ! In each, you’ll find gift ideas, dining deals, fashion picks, beauty must-
haves and everything in between, to make sure that you and your other half have an unforgettable V-Day this year! Ladies, your advice starts on p23 and fellas should turn to p35 for inspiration.
Carrying on the path of what love means to us, it means celebrating this
awesome city that we live in! For the second-year running, we bring you the annual FACT Dining Awards, a celebration of the best in Abu Dhabi’s
food and beverage scene. You can check out all the nominees starting p16
– did your favourites make the cut? Stay tuned, as online voting will begin very soon!

The Misfit Ray Last year was undoubtedly the year of the fitness tracker; almost every wrist you looked upon had some form of sports monitor around it and so, naturally, it has been carried through the New Year as a must have item. Whether you’re sports mad, the occasional runner, or simply just trying to improve your general fitness and wellbeing, the Misfit Ray could be the perfect gift you want this Valentine’s Day…
At first glance, the Misfit Ray has huge appeal, it’s unlike other trackers in the way that it looks more like a piece of jewellery; not overstated, but something that could sit nicely beside your watch without being noticeable as a fitness tracker. The colour options, either black or rose gold, only add to the sleek aesthetic that is bound to gain plenty of fans. So what does it do? Well, you’ve got all the normal features that come with any fitness tracker; automatic sleep and fitness tracking, water resistance up to 50m and a silent alarm to wake you, but the Ray has quite a few cool extras too. If you’ve been sat still for too long you’ll get a nudge to remind you to be more active, and when you’ve perked up you’ll get dedicated tracking for a series of activities including running, swimming, cycling, yoga

and dancing. But, by far the coolest part of the Ray is that it works with the Link platform so you can turn off lights, change music and even take selfies – yes! In terms of practicality, it’s small and lightweight, measuring 38mm long and weighing in at just 8g. The battery life is around six months and these can be changed once they’ve expired. Users will also have the option to wear this as a necklace on the days they don’t care for wrist wear. The only cons to the Ray are that, unlike previous Misfit trackers, it doesn’t tell the time and notifications are less prominent. But, if it’s something stylish and practical that you need, with some of the most up-to-date technology on the market, then make sure the Misfit Ray is at the top of your must haves and gift list.

Home Spa Day
There is no better way to have a relaxed evening than to gather your girlfriends around and indulge in some much needed pampering, while watching a chick flick on telly. What better way to rejuvenate than having your very own spa day with the girlies? Don’t forget your facemask and mani-pedi kits before you head out. Light those candles, put some soothing music on and put your feet up… it’s chillax time!
Karaoke Night After a couple of glasses of bubblies, everything sounds better, even the sound of your own voice. Nothing beats an impromptu night of karaoke to get you into the singsong mood. Maybe even do it in teams of two for a friendly battle of the tunes and have the winners crowned the nightingales. So, belt them out, ladies…sing (and dance) like no one’s watching!
Batch maker, batch maker, make me a batch…of course, we’re talking about baking. The smell of freshly baked goodies is enough to make everyone dizzy with decadence - the diet is definitely going out of the window. Make it a fun evening by getting customised aprons for all your girlfriends. You can even swap your favourite cookie recipes. It’s time to put on the chef ’s hats, girls and get baking...the hot chocolate goes without saying!

Big Screen Pride and Prejudice and Zombies What’s it about:
Based on the 2009 parody novel by Seth GrahameSmith, this is a mashup of Jane Austen’s classic tale of the tangled relationships between lovers from different social classes in 19th century England, combined with a gruesome twist in the form of an army of undead zombies.
Director: Burr Steers cast: Lily James, Sam Riley, Lena Headey Why it’s worth watching? Hot chicks in ball gowns with knives stowed in their stockings – erm, what’s not to like? This isn’t like any old Austen adaptation, bar the fancy balls, horseback riding and picture-perfect homes; this is the story of a feisty heroine, Elizabeth Bennet (Lily James) who is a master of martial arts and weaponry (as you’d expect in 19th century England…), and the handsome Mr. Darcy, a fierce zombie killer, and the essence of upper class prejudice. As the zombie outbreak intensifies, they must swallow their pride and join forces on the blood-soaked battlefield. Austen purists will hate it, but everyone else will dig it for the slicing and dicing of zombie hoards - there’s nothing more badass than a group of strong, beautiful sisters slaying their way out of zombie danger! If you’re looking for something fun and gory to watch on V-day, this one ticks all the boxes.

Valentine’s Pick: Groundhog Day What’s it about:
A cynical, hard-edged weatherman is reluctantly sent to cover a story about a forecasting “rat” – as he calls it. It’s his fourth year running on this story and he’s openly frustrated. Little does he know that soon he’ll be forced to relive the same day again, and again, and again, while covering the annual Groundhog Day festival in Punxsutawney, PA.
Director: Harold Ramis cast: Bill Murray, Andie MacDowell, Chris Elliot, Stephen Tobolowsky What’s in it for guys? Every guy’s icon Bill Murray puts on a hilariously winning performance here as TV meteorologist lout Phil Connors, who provides a string of comic moments during his repetitive Groundhog Day plight. The star and his co-cast mates are perfectly in sync here!
What’s in it for girls? Ladies, pucker up for a gooey romantic centre which is revealed in the second half of the movie when Phil begins to fall for his producer Rita (Andie Macdowell), and a genuinely sweet love story emerges, awww! fact magazine

PLUGGED-IN
The Myo Motion Control Armband Is this the future, or is it just a gimmick? FACT tries out an interesting and relatively new concept to see if all you fellas out there will benefit from it, for everyday use.
The Myo Gesture Control Armband, developed by Thalmic Labs, applies very cutting edge technology to everyday tasks on our electronic devices, and looks like something from a sci-fi movie. Using a combination of motion sensors and electromyography (say THAT rapidly ten times after a few beverages…), which is the concept of reading electrical activity created by muscles, the armband translates it to commands that can be understood by everyday electronic devices such as laptops and TVs. As opposed to the motion detection technology that most devices, such as the Xbox Kinect use, the Myo Armband reads electronic signals from the muscles in your forearm and hand motions to control the devices via Bluetooth. When you first use the armband, you’ll have to use a series of instruction videos to get it calibrated, and this takes a bit of time. You have to give the armband a little while to register the electrical signals in your arm, and then perform specific movements to get it up and running. 40
fact magazine
Once you start using it, you’ll then have to learn the specific movements that form each command. For example, with iTunes, you wave left or right to skip a track forwards or backwards, or roll your fist to adjust volume. Once you get the hang of things, it actually feels quite cool waving your hand and having the laptop respond. However, this is also where you’ll discover the device’s limitations. It can only read a range of motions that emit a very specific electrical signal, and these are finger taps, left or right waves, opening your hand, making a fist, and any up, down, left, right, and roll movements. This means that you won’t be writing words in the air, and you probably can’t use it on the treadmill as the running motion will confuse it (not that we tried – we don’t exercise!). There is hope though, as app developers have been working on it since the device we previewed a couple of years ago, and as a result there are a number of applications it can be used with, such as Netflix, Spotify, YouTube, Minecraft, and even a range of drones that can be controlled by the armband. We see it being most useful for people who do activities that involve getting both hands dirty, like cooking, mechanics or arts and craft, as you can watch video tutorials or listen to music, and control either without getting your devices grubby. VERDICT: At the moment, the Myo Gesture Control Armband is still quite limited in its applications, and it’s not the omnipotent control-all device we were hoping it would be. Having said that, like early Androids, the list of compatible software is growing steadily, and we see this becoming a big deal in years to come. Just not yet…

S
ya One was raised on the streets and lines of the UK and now lives and breathes the endless cultures of Dubai. He’s been a graffiti writer for nearly 20 years. As a sign writer by trade, Sya moved into letter construction and colour combination, looking at the never-ending styles and realms of what a letter can do. “I became interested in letters early on,” Sya recalls. “Around the same time that subway art came out, and I was mesmerised by what a letter could do. This was also around the time I got into graffiti. “Later on, I became a sign writer and, for me, the love of letters grew once I started understanding the construction of a letter and what you could do with it,” he explains. Sya’s graffiti writing is known in particular for its old-school, easilyreadable, large, lazy, and brightly coloured letters. It’s easy to see in his vibrant work that Sya is passionate about the power of letters. So, how would he describe his artistic style? “Lazy,” he says. “The letters that I have worked on and I’m still working on are kind of laid back and chill, with bright colours. A friend told me that sometimes it looks like my letters are talking to each other or have there own stance.” We take Sya down memory lane and ask how he first got into graffiti. ➻ fact magazine

arts interview
“I’ve always been into drawing since I was a kid and then when I reached school it was the only thing I was interested in,” he reminisces. “Drawing was the only thing I could set my mind to and get lost in. I was taught how to draw by my amazing art teacher who could see that I was not fussed with Maths and English, and that art was really my thing,” Sya continues. “He taught me the basics. The first things that I drew, which I was really happy about, was a car and a portrait, I gave it my all.” There are still many out there who view graffiti in a negative light, especially as, around the world, many take to the walls in retaliation to political and social injustice. It is true that graffiti was once seen as just a punishable act of pavement protest, but as Sya’s and many other artists’ work proves, it has grown to be so much more. We were intrigued to know that for anyone who still sees graffiti as a form of vandalism, what would Sya have to say? “You are correct, the essence of graffiti is vandalism, BUT you need to look beyond that and see the passion that all the writers in the world have,” Sya explains. “Ignore the ones that are in it for the fashion status and likes on Facebook and Insta, the true writers have dedicated there lives to this craft, me included, and have spent countless hours practicing in sketch books; looking for spots to paint; and hiding in bushes waiting to paint. “We are loyal to this - paint almost flows through our veins. Nowadays graffiti is more acceptable and the days of ‘illegal’ work is pretty much done, but I never forget the roots,” he says. When working on a piece, graffiti writing requires time, dedication and patience, but knowing when to stop, and when a piece is finished, is also a skill in itself. This is something that Sya knows all too well. “Stopping is the hardest thing to do, whilst painting,” he says. “But once you have been doing it for as long as I have, you kind of just know when to stop. “It’s hard to explain. You can ruin a perfectly good piece by going that bit too far, or not doing enough. It’s a fine line.” When it comes to something so freespirited and bold as graffiti and street art, 52

However, Sya and Steffi manage to do this by taking part in projects and initiatives that allow them to inform and inspire people.
“We take part in such activities so that the masses can see what we do, and how we do it,” Sya tells us. “It keeps the scene moving and hopefully inspires the next generation of graffiti writers or street artists. “It’s good to see people vibing out on what you’re doing and learning about we do,” he continues. “I like talking to people when I’m painting at an event. Whether they are positive or negative, it’s good to talk to them and find out their views on what we do.” And on a final note, Sya’s advice to upcoming artists is to “practice, practice, practice, and do it for yourself.” His biggest tip is to “stay off the internet.” Why? Because much like both Sya and Steffi have found their own style, he urges other graffiti writers and street artists to dedicate themselves to the craft, saying: “Don’t do it because it’s cool, do it because you’ve fallen in love with it.” ✤

S
teffi is a British graffiti and stencil artist based in Dubai. From the inspiration and memory of her late Scottish Grandmother (who always wore bows) to the place where she was born (Bow, East London), Steffi created an image through a graffiti “bow” tag that represented her whole being - past, future, and present. “It’s a symbol that means a lot to me,” Steffi says. “Even my engagement ring has been made up of diamonds shaped in my bow tag signature. First and foremost, it reminds me of my granny who always wore bows. Also, I was born in Bow, East London. Lastly, like my granny, I really love bows and how they make things smart and dressy,” she explains. It started off with painting simple graffiti bow tags and led Steffi on an adventure with spray paint, creating larger and more complex real life stencil pieces, portraits, freehand graffiti bows, letters, and abstract pieces. She has created the largest piece of aerosol art in the UAE along with creative partner and husband, graffiti artist, Sya One. “Sya and I met here in Dubai, painting a graffiti wall that used to exist at Dubai Festival City,” Steffi tells us. “We were pretty much inseparable from the moment we met and we’ve had so much fun sharing the hobby we love. It’s been a complete adventure for both of us.” ➻ fact magazine

Really we don’t need much; just spray paint, nozzles/capsdifferent types depending on what paint effect we are trying to get. and wall space.lots of wall space.”
In terms of tools and technique, there isn’t much that Steffi needs to let out her creative side. “Really we don’t need much; just spray paint, nozzles/caps - different types depending on what paint effect we are trying to get - and wall space - lots of wall space. “I joke with people that Sya does not get out of bed unless the wall size is five metres wide or more! If I’m doing a stencil then it takes more preparation time as I hand cut the stencil – but then the spraying time is really quick. These days I’m much happier going freestyle and not using stencils,” Steffi says. She defines herself as more of a street artist than a graffiti writer – two terms that, she believes, have completely
different meanings. “They’re different both in terms of their art and the psychology behind the art,” Steffi explains. “In a nutshell, graffiti writers are about freehand, stylised letter form with spray paint, whilst Street Artists are about painting imagery more pictorial work - using a variety of different mediums, although spray paint is usually the main medium.” For anyone viewing Steffi’s work, and certainly what we were pleasantly surprised to learn, is that Steffi only picked up a spray can at the age of 35. She did A-level Art at college in the UK but then completely forgot about any kind of creative activity for 17 years! “I’d always loved looking at street art in London,” Steffi recalls. “But I had no idea about what graffiti was. I then started tagging my bow stencil and things developed from there.” Steffi has since come a long way and she tells us why she loves producing graffiti so much. “It amuses me. Nothing more, nothing less. I love the interaction of being out on the street, painting, having a laugh with people walking by and other people I’m painting with. I really don’t enjoy painting on a piece of canvas, I find it completely boring!” Spoken like a true street artist! And what about the street art scene
here in the UAE? “Our little scene is growing, which is great,” Steffi says. “The problem is that there is nowhere to, legally, paint our work in public without it being a planned commission piece or event. “It’s frustrating because there are so many walls here that could do with some love, such as in Al Quoz. Dubai has the ability to host the world’s greatest graffiti and street art event - it just needs some imagination with the spaces that could be used so brilliantly,” she adds. As Steffi and Sya’s mission is to promote graffiti as an art form in the UAE, what advice does Steffi have for budding artists? “Be passionate and determined,” she says. “Learning to use spray paint is the greatest thing I’ve ever done and I’ve had so much fun with doing street art. “It can be terribly frustrating at times getting to grips with “can control” but you will always progress if you try hard and remain curious to push your limits!” ✤
FUN FACTS • Both Sya and Steffi are currently Brand Ambassadors for Adidas Originals. These brand tie-ups give the duo a platform to promote their work to a wider audience – locally, regionally and internationally. • The duo has painted the largest indoor piece of graffiti art in the UAE at the Aloft Hotel in Abu Dhabi. • Graffiti Lovers has also painted at Katara Cultural Village in Doha, live at DIFC Art Night, at the opening of The Emaar Dubai Pavilion Downtown and for a host of major global brands, such as Adidas, Gap, G-Shock Casio, Nokia, Perrier, and Sony. • If Sya was stranded on an island for a year, he’d take a sketch pad, a pencil and a scalpel for company.

KNOW YOUR TERMS BLACK BOOK
WILDSTYLE
GETTING UP
A graffiti artist’s sketchbook – doesn’t have to be black. Often used to sketch out and plan potential graffiti, and to collect tags from other writers.
It’s all about interlocking letters and elaborate symbols, almost threedimensional type. Basically, it’s graffiti with text so stylised, only experts or practitioners can read the name.
To paint and build up a reputation. When other writers see your work in multiple locations, you’re “getting up”.
PIECE Short for “masterpiece.” A large and labour-intensive graffiti painting, usually with at least three colours.
TAG A stylised name or signature, usually done in one colour with various materials, such as a marker or an aerosol spray can, often freehand. A tag is often done in a colour that contrasts the background; a person who tags is known as a writer or bomber and they will tag on or beside their pieces – like a sign on the artwork.
STRAIGHT LETTERS Pretty much the opposite of wildstyle, this is a direct, blocky, more readable and simpler style of graffiti, often with only two colours, and can be read by anyone.
CHARACTER When graffiti brings to life an animated, cartoonish, cute or creepy character that serves as a signature or visual shorthand. Many artists invent a wholly new being that can be out up on its own or as part of a bigger narrative.
MURAL A huge piece, usually on a legal wall. It could be done by one graffiti writer, a group or a whole crew, and it could depict one single scene or be part of a series of connected images.
STENCIL A phrase, image or both, designed and cut into heavy paper or cardboard, then spray-painted onto a wall. Stencils can be one-offs or can be used repeatedly to make the work of one artist or writer recognisable.
INSTALLATION Can be temporary or permanent work, usually commissioned, which
means the piece is site-specific, and often 3D or sculptural. An installation can combine various techniques, some could have political agendas, be part of a big event and usually include something innovative for the people to see.
LEGAL WALL Places where graffiti writers can legally put up pieces. This can be on houses, office blocks, apartment buildings etc. Legal walls have helped bring about the transformation of graffiti into public art.
ROLLER A work done with a roller brush. The brush’s long handle enables artists to paint in hard-to-reach or tricky spots. Most rollers consist of block-letter tags or phrases, sometimes with drop shadows or intentional drips. fact magazine

ARTS
If you’re into the art of sculpture then you’re likely to have come across the name Diana Al-Hadid. Born in Aleppo, Syria in 1981, and grown up in Ohio, USA, Diana now lives and works in New York City. Her work transforms renaissance and classical imagery into contemporary sculptural forms that appear to be decaying or resurfacing, often in a cascade of white, melting gypsum. Her towering sculptures, spectral wall pieces, and surreal bronzes will fill the 7,000sqft Art Gallery at NYUAD. The exhibition takes its title from a central work, Phantom Limb, a term referring to the sensations that a missing arm or leg is still present, and able to move. The title captures the character of much of Diana’s work, which evokes memory and long cultural history through a visceral, materially-focused working technique. The theme of memory and its physical manifestations in art and architecture runs throughout the artist’s work. The monumental sculpture of Phantom Limb is framed by two major wall insets: The Sleepwalker and Still Life. The first draws from the 4th Century BC bas-relief Gradiva, while the latter is a reworking of Hans Memling’s 1475 painting Allegory of Chastity. This ensemble travels from the artist’s recent show, The Fates, at the Secession Vienna. These “fates” anchor a series of related sculptures, alongside the world-premiere of an epic new triptych of wall panels. For these brightly colored, shimmering wall panels, Diana responds to the renaissance triptych, Battle of San Romano by Paolo Uccello. Like Uccello, she experiments and expands the pictorial space in her panels, oscillating between painting and sculpture. Maya Allison, founding Director of the Art Gallery, and Chief Curator, at NYUAD, says: “I’m delighted that we have this opportunity to present a major solo show of Diana Al-Hadid’s work. Art is always better seen in person, and Al-Hadid’s sculptures in particular have a remarkably visceral presence in the gallery. “She uses source imagery from ancient and renaissance art, and one has the sense that she has worked every element by hand, channeling some ancient shared 64

The mix of art historical references and creative immediacy will bring many different audiences into dialogue - and that is at the core of why the Art Gallery exists: to generate both intellectual and creative activity around museum-quality exhibitions,” she adds.
To accompany the exhibition, NYUAD Art Gallery will publish a scholarly catalogue, with texts by Renaissance and contemporary art historians and curators: Reindert Falkenburg (NYU Abu Dhabi), Alistair Rider (University of St. Andrews), and Sara Raza (Guggenheim). “It’s an absolute privilege to work with Maya and the NYU Abu Dhabi Gallery staff,” Diana Al-Hadid says. “They have a deep respect for artists’ needs and a tremendous depth of appreciation for the work itself. I’m confident the exhibition will come together beautifully in their capable hands and will reflect their ambition and generousity of spirit. “It is imperative that university galleries maintain a high standard so students can continually have direct access to challenging work that can be discussed in a critical context,” she continues. “This is a time for students to be fearless and develop a voracious appetite for experimentation, discovery and risk. I am honored to have my work in this environment and I hope it will stimulate some engaging conversations.” If you’re looking for an intellectual, artistic experience with great historical references – this is where you’ll find it! ✤ GO: Phantom Limb opens March 6 and will be on display until May 28. ifferent sources give you different answers when you search for how many countries there are on planet earth – but there are 197 independent nations – and as far as bucket lists go, the Seychelles should definitely make your top 10 destinations to visit before you die. Etihad Airways and Seychelles Tourism Board joined forces and took hospitality to a whole new level when FACT magazine accepted their generous offer to traipse the luscious islands. Admittedly we thought the Seychelles was purely a honeymoon destination where all there is to do is sunbathe, drink colourful cocktails, sunbathe some more and enjoy sprawling sunsets with your love. That may be so, but there’s so much more to the Seychelles than the postcard stereotype. Over the years the growing number of hotel resorts alongside the influx of tourism has put the Indian Ocean jewel at the heart of the international travel map. Travellers from all walks of life – lovers, soul-searchers, botanists and families come to this enchanting destination. We are positive that one of the 116 coral and granite islands will bring you a sense of peace and calm to your soul – that or the beauty will just blow your socks off. Situated in the western Indian Ocean near the equator, the climate in the archipelago is delightfully tropical; the perfect combination of sun and rain that will not leave you too bored of either. You’ll find that June, July, and August have the least amount of rain and is therefore the best time to visit – especially, for a relaxing retreat after a school year, with the family. Yet, with temperatures ranging between 27 and 33 degrees Celsius, the Seychelles is never out of season. We took to the main island of Mahé - defined by its whitesand beaches and lush green nature. Victoria, the capital, is the epicenter of all that’s lively and touristy. The elegant replica of London’s Big Ben clock makes the heart of the city a must see. From there, walking down the busy streets of Victoria is a pleasure, as long as you carry your trusted umbrella - provided by your hotel. There are plenty of shops and kiosks to choose from, but if I had to pin down the best, the busy market of Sir Selwyn-Clarke is ideal for a good bargain. ➻

Tropical fruits, exotic vegetables, and lots of fresh fish are sold side by side with a local variety of spices such as cinnamon, bay-leafs, nutmeg, vanilla, and their famous homemade curry sauce. From beachwear to handmade accessories and souvenirs, everything is inspired by the azure waters and tropical treasures. There’s a plethora of items to choose from: corals, shark tooth necklaces, coconut shell bracelets, coconut oil, soap, magnets and key chains, there are so many beautiful souvenirs to gift your family and friends. We were eager to see Le Coco Do Mer, the eroticallyshaped fruit that represents the country’s trademark forbidden fruit. It once grew only on two tiny isles and is now protected by the government. It’s fairly expensive and to take one back home, you require an export license. And when in the Seychelles, a fishing trip is in order. It’s super easy to arrange – either independently or through your hotel, it’s absolutely worth it – and OH EM GEE the taste of that fresh catch grilled on the shores of the nearby island is just heavenly. Be sure that your local companion knows his way around the spices! If you get the chance to visit Eden Island, the only man-made island in the country, you must try dining in one of its luxury restaurants. Foodies and the culinary curious, like us, will not be disappointed. Surprisingly we found the Seychelles’ curry to be very different from the Indian and Thai variety. The octopus curry is a traditional dish that you may want to try; but if you are not up to the challenge, you may want to ask the chef to go easy on the chili! But no worries, there’s always a hot mix of grill items for you to try if the aforementioned doesn’t work out. Whatever your reason for visiting the Seychelles – you’ve just got hitched, you want a mini break from city life, you want to top that tan, you want to immerse yourself in the wonders of nature or you want to indulge in a gastronomic journey of spice and more spice – there’s so much to love here. Not to mention, there’s heaps of luxury to be found everywhere you go – namely in those relaxing massages where you lie in wafts of lemongrass and ginger essences or when you sit under a full moon with a passion fruit cocktail in your hand. Perfection? We think so! That’s why we urge you to tick the Seychelles off your list. While we were lapping it up in the Seychelles we got to stay in two luxury resorts, lucky us. ➻ fact magazine

CITY RIDES
A loud, brash, growling luxury CUV coupe from the MercedesBenz ‘mentalist’ division, AMG, the GLE 63 S offers the fun of a premium sports car, and the practicality of a large hatch… Late last year Mercedes-Benz launched the AMG GLE 63 S – a direct, in-your-face challenge to the BMW X6 M in a very niche segment that right now literally only comprises these two performance CUV coupes. Mercedes arrive a little late to the game, as BMW are on their second generation now, but given the wild success of the X6, it was only a matter of time before Mercedes decided to get in on the action. So, how have they faired? Well, for starters, the GLE 63 S boasts a delicious big biturbo V8 that roars and 78

snarls like a whipped lion. You’ll have a grin from ear to ear every time you punch the throttle – your neighbours will hate you, but you won’t care a jot. The 5.5l V8 puts out 577hp through the excellent seven-speed AMG SPEEDSHIFT transmission, which boasts lightning-fast gear changes. And despite its size and high stance, it really feels like a sports car, with huge amounts of grip and a 40/60 front-rear torque split helping it get round corners. Even in normal drive mode there’s aggressiveness to the throttle that makes
it feel like it just wants to race, ALL the time. For petrol heads like us, it was a delight, but I can imagine it might scare the more timid driver. Like any AMG, it’s not for the faint-hearted! The electric steering is excellent – many lament the spread of electric steering for it’s lack of feedback and precision, but the GLE’s steering feels as precise as a surgeon’s scalpel. Having said all that, there is a fair amount of body roll to this CUV coupe, with the front dipping under heavy braking, and the car really sitting on its haunches when you floor it from standstill. In doing so, however, you’ll be hitting 100km/h in about four seconds, so you won’t really think about it too much! There also could have been more feel to the brakes, which felt a little soft. Though the exterior styling, we feel, is going to polarise opinions, it’s going to appeal to enough people to make it a success, much like the X6. However,
CITY RIDES
on the interior there will be no debate at all – it’s superb. Stylish and inviting as only a Mercedes can be, and despite the coupe roofline, there’s decent room in the rear seats that all but the tallest among us will feel comfortable in. Because of the sloping roofline there is a slight issue with rear visibility when parking, but this is largely addressed with the excellent rear and 360° topdown parking cameras which guide you into any spot with amazing accuracy. There is also an impressive amount of boot space, making the GLE a viable family car option. The Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S Coupe is going to straddle two worlds nicely – it’ll appeal to a younger crowd who want something sporty with SUV dimensions, but it will also satisfy people with families who want both excitement AND practicality. This is a car you can cover real distance in, and enjoy every minute of the drive! ✤ fact magazine

route rises, no less than, 4000ft up the mountain range. At the summit there’s a scenic public viewing area with almost 360-degree views of Al Ain on one side, and the desert on the other. However, before the sun sets, you might want to check out the hotel nearby. The Mercure Grand at the summit of the mountain is a decent four star… from the 1980s! While the resort looks pretty dated in comparison to the many stunning hotels to be found in other parts of the UAE these days, there is a café on a lookout point near the pool area which is a spectacular place to sit and watch the sunset a thousand feet above the desert - beautiful!
A Coastal Cruise to Musandam
The closest thing you’ll get to the Pacific Coast Highway, the stunning Khasab road winds its way along the northern coast of Musandam between the towering mountains and cliffs on one side, and the azure waters of the Arabian Gulf on the other. Bear in mind, you will be crossing into Omani territory, so bring your passport and necessary travel documents. You will also need to insure your car for Oman, but this can be done at the border for a minimal cost. Once out there, we recommend staying at the Atana Musandam Resort – it’s rustic, but clean and comfortable, and a number of excellent excursions can be arranged from there. Highly recommended is a dhow cruise around Musandam’s fjords – it’s some of the most spectacular coastal scenery in the whole region.

Dine Around the World at Teatro “My strong point was in Asian food, so for the other cuisines I relied very much on the skills of my team here in Teatro, who are all extremely talented.”
– Chef Antonio Lopez. fact magazine

CHEF’S TABLE
This month we dine at the tab le of C hef A ntonio L ope z , E x ecutive S ous C hef at Teatro , Park R otana A b u D hab i . Teatro’ s philosophy is W here E ast meets West, which involves the unenvia b le task of offering dishes from around the world at five- star standards …
Few are more qualified than Chef Antonio Lopez to manage the task of running Teatro, having worked in kitchens from the Far East to the Middle East. However, his origins, interestingly, are in IT. It was while studying a course in computer engineering in the Philippines that Chef Lopez took a part time job as a kitchen steward, in a Japanese restaurant at the Sheraton Manila. He quickly fell in love with the work going on around him, and soon began training with the hotel’s chefs. Abandoning his studies altogether, he threw himself into cooking full time, and was soon on his way up in the culinary world. He has since worked in a number of fivestar properties across the Middle East and Asia, including Cairo Sheraton, JW Marriot 86

in Mumbai, Fairmont in Egypt, and Saigon Bleu and Buddha Bar in Cairo. Throughout his career, Chef Lopez learned everything from Thai to Chinese, Vietnamese-French , and many more Asian cuisines. “I had heard that no chef wanted to handle Teatro, because of having so many different cuisines in one restaurant,” he recalls. “And it was a real challenge, I had a hard time, especially during my first month. My strong point was in Asian food, so for the other cuisines I relied very much on the skills of my team here in Teatro, who are all extremely talented. They already had things very much arranged, the menu just needed a few tweaks.” The tweaks to the menu involved slimming down the selection to make things more efficient, and improve the
quality of the main favourites. “The mise en place for so many different types of food is very difficult, so I simplified the menu when I joined,” explains Chef Lopez. “It was around 170 items, and we trimmed it down to around 130. Around 50 of those are the sushi items.” In keeping with Teatro’s principles, our evening was to be a round-the-world culinary experience, kicking off with a sumptuous round of sushi. We were treated to the Special Combo Platter, with some Nigiri, Sashimi and California Maki, and the Passion Torch Roll, with tuna salmon, avocado, tobiko and soya reduction. The tuna on top is seared with a blow torch to add to the flavours. The starters we sampled were the Warm Duck Salad with Lychee, the Sweet and Sticky
CHEF’S TABLE
Veal Ribs, with Malaysian sweet black pepper glaze, and the Screaming Salmon, with chilli, and ponzu dressing, all of which were excellent. The mains to come were Nori Seaweed Salmon, with wasabi potato puree and misoponzu glaze, Chilean Sea Bass marinated with miso, Indian-style Lamb Shank slowly braised with a blend of ginger, garlic, onion, fresh tomato, kashmiri aromatic spices, and finally Grilled Corn-Fed Chicken, with potato-onion ragout, and sautéed chanterelle mushrooms. Highlights were the Chilean Sea Bass, which was rich, buttery and delicious, and the Indian Lamb Shank, which was fall-offthe-bone tender. To finish off, we had The Dolce Stage, ‘the big show’ sharing dessert platter, which boasts all of the restaurant’s desserts, including the Green Tea Cake, with sweet bean cream filling with black sesame gelato, Dulce de Leche & Banana Wontons, dusted in cinnamon sugar, Lemongrass Crème Brulee, with Thai coconut gelato, and more.
An interesting addition was the Tiffin Punch mocktail (for two), which came highly recommended by the management. It comprises lemon, grapefruit, ginger, lychee and ginger ale, and comes in an Asian-style tiffin container, with the drink in the top layer, and ice in the bottom to keep it cool without becoming watery, and it’s refreshing and delicious! Teatro is an excellent option for those who want the best of all worlds in one! Chef Lopez does an excellent job of brining all these worlds together in a mixture of traditional and fusion dishes, all of which are of excellent quality! ✤ GO: Call (0)2 657 3333 for reservations and more information. fact magazine

venue review
Seafood Sensation When the cooler climate shows up, an outdoor dining experience is a must. Team this with some of the best seafood in town and you’ve got Flooka Restaurant located at the beautiful Eastern Mangroves Promenade. FACT went to check it out…
O
ur first impression of Flooka is that it has a fabulous location; right by the Mangroves where you can enjoy the stillness of the water and watch people onboard the Eco-Donut Boats, going for a spin around the lush surroundings. Here, it’s easy to slip into our comfy chairs on the spacious outdoor patio and forget about the city bustle. The venue is large and tastefully decorated with nautical elements like a grand lighting fixture made up of a school of fish, floor to ceiling windows that allow for the al fresco dining vibe to spill into the indoor seating area too. Bright and airy by day, and warm and intimate by night, Flooka ticks all the right boxes for couples, friends, families and, in general, 88

casual diners looking for a laid-back meal in a five-star setting. Flooka serves up Mediterranean Seafood with, what we would describe as, a timeless Arabic twist. The menu combines classic fresh flavours of the sea with a modern approach. You’ll see the fresh seafood offerings of the day artfully displayed on ice and presented cooked on rock salt. We beging with an array of delicious appetisers; hummous, fattoush, batata harra, and some options from the seafood mezze, including fish taouk, fish falafel and fish shawarma. The flavours are popping off in every dish! We love that everything is perfectly seasoned especially the batata harra with coriander and spices, and the fish taouk with lemon, garlic and olive oil – delicious. The absolute standout
dish had to be the fish falafel which is hammour with herbs and spices wrapped with sesame seeds deep fried. Firstly, it’s a great innovative spin on falafel, and secondly, they taste like little bites of foodie goodness (we could eat these every day, literally!). For mains, we go for the flooka fish and chips, sayadiyeh (grilled fish with rice,

walnuts and almonds), the jumbo prawns and a grilled red snapper. Presentation of the dishes is very homely in that there’s nothing pretentious and over-the-top – it’s simple, appealing and reminds us of good, wholesome cooking. Just like you’d expect at a big family dinner! Now, let’s talk about these prawns. They. Are. JUMBO! The waiter takes off the heads for us, we sprinkle a little bit of slat and pepper on them, and they go down an absolute treat. The red snapper is packed with serious flavours and is cooked to tender perfection, whilst the fish and chips is a fail-safe crowd-pleasing dish. If you’ve got room left for dessert, we’d highly recommend the selection of ice creams and sorbets; try the funky monkey and dabbouza ice creams – a great end to an exquisite meal. To top all that off, the
friendliness of the staff, their attentive service and their enthusiasm for the restaurant and the food it serves, is positively infectious. Flooka, you’ve won us over! ✤

T
he all-new Blu Sky Lounge & Grill opened its doors to the public last month in a bustling launch at the Southern Sun Abu Dhabi, located in the Al Zahiyah area, between the Corniche and Mina Zayed port. The sports bar boasts modern and stylish décor reminiscent of a network pundit’s studio, with large, highly visible TV screens covering every wall of the venue, ensuring excellent viewing options for all sports events. If you want to ensure that your game is shown in the best possible way, there’s even a VIP lounge you can book which will show whatever sports event you request, with commentary. With the Southern Sun property being owned by the same senior local figure who happens to own the Manchester City FC, the hotel’s sports lounge does have a loose affiliation with the Sky Blues (does the name make sense now?), though with many large screens dotted around the place, Blu Sky’s management stresses that all prominent matches will be shown in the venue, opening hours permitting. Blu Sky’s menu is as tempting as one would expect from the luxurious boutique city hotel. It’s classic pub fare with flair, with favourites like Torpedo Shrimp, Stilton Mushrooms and Buckets of Wings in the warm up, and the Blu Sky Club House sandwich, the Bull Burger, Bangers and

Mash and Fish & Chips for the main event all satisfying a hearty appetite. If you’re not looking for a full meal, but simply snacks to share between friends during a game, you’re well catered for too. There’s the Grand Mezze selection, the Chip Shop platter with cod, scampi, crab cakes with mozzarella, and tempura calamari, and the Blu Sky Sharer, with flame grilled boerewors, spicy chicken wings, biltong, lamb sosaties and mozzarella sticks. And those looking for something lighter can go for salads such as the Chicken and Pear and the Duke’s, or the Stout Onion Soup or New England Clam Chowder. Something we definitely have our eye on for our next visit is the Steak & Stilton Pie, which sounds absolutely delicious.
Desserts on offer include the Sizzling Brownie, the Cheesecake in a Jar, and a Real English Trifle Pudding – bring it on! Perhaps our favourite things on the menu were the prices – it’s all very reasonable and won’t break the bank, and this extends to the beverage prices too. They’re in a very generous start-up mode right now, so we encourage you to get down there and make the most of it while it lasts. We’ll see you at the next City game! ✤ GO: Visit Blu Sky Lounge & Grill at Southern Sun Abu Dhabi. Call (0)2 818 4888 for reservations and more information. fact magazine

What are your favourite things about life in the UAE? Abu Dhabi is my lifelong home and my favourite aspect is the local hospitality and caring nature of the small community. I deeply appreciate and thank our ruling family and leaders that they have created beautiful green cities and a safe environment and country for our families. Of course, my ultimate favourite thing is that there are so many delicious food and culinary options from all parts of the world, and most open very late into the evening!
Your recommendation for a romantic evening out in Abu Dhabi this Valentine’s Day? Of course, my recommendation would be to first place an order from Basiligo to deliver to you and your loved one at around 5pm to your favourite outdoor picnic spot – perhaps Mushrif Garden Park or the Saadiyat Beach, which is so romantic at sunset. All you have to pack is a large picnic blanket, some cushions, and your beverages! As a sunset junkie, this is my perfect recommendation to enjoy the evening out in the gorgeous weather.
