How Deep is Your Love?

“All you need is love. But a little chocolate now and then doesn’t hurt.” - Charles M. Schulz

W

hat’s up lovebirds? Is that still something that people say? It turns out that, after an entire month of typing the word Valentine’s hundreds of times, I’m still no closer to figuring out how I really feel about this annual and very “official” celebration of love. On one hand, February 14 in all its candy, card and flowers glory is a commercially-driven, pressure-imposing day, and on the other it’s when love-budding wild hearts, both young and old, get to do something special for one another. Who wants to get bitter about that? Not me! For all the right reasons, Valentine’s Day in Abu Dhabi can be your most memorable yet. Turn to p23 and check out For The Love of… where we bring you everything from dinner dates, sweet afternoon treats, spa indulgence, romantic getaways, beautiful gifts and so many more ideas to celebrate love! If you’re really looking to impress, head straight to p37 and check out this month’s special Weekend Spotlight at the instagramworthy Eastern Mangroves Hotel & Spa by Anantara, Abu Dhabi. A few days here and you’ll be in the good books for a very long time! The city comes alive with arts and culture this month, too. At NYU Abu Dhabi Art Gallery, discover one of the most prominent artistic communities in the country’s history (p42), whilst over at Tashkeel, the realm of digital photography takes on a new life (p46). My very own love affair, with the one thing that never lets me down in Abu Dhabi, continues into this month. You’ve guessed it: F.O.O.D. For all the palate-pleasing goodness in the city, we’ve tasted some of the most incredible cuisines in the capital. In the Culinary Spotlight, we meet the man behind the renowned Zuma Abu Dhabi and, of course, try out some of the restaurant’s signature dishes (p79); the Foodie Corner takes us on a truly traditional epicurean journey to Greece, in Acropolis at Le Meridien Abu Dhabi (p85); whilst On The Menu gets sophisticated at Hakkasan Abu Dhabi (p89). That’s what I call love. – your favourite Netflix episode on the TV and a table full of great food to share with family friends. Of course, a shiny gift or a plane ticket to Paris wouldn’t hurt too... a girl can dream.☺

Abu Dhabi On Top! Abu Dhabi has been ranked among the fastest-growing destinations in the world, and the fastest-growing destination in the Middle East, in a new report by financial services giant Mastercard.

Maybe it’s the stunning mangroves, or the entertainment on Yas Island, and how about the natural wonder of Saadiyat Island or the amazing food and shopping in hotels and malls – all of these things (and more) make Abu Dhabi one of the best destinations to visit in the Gulf – and it seems that travellers agree. The Global Cities Index Report recognised the UAE capital’s compound annual growth rate of 19.81 per cent in overnight visitors between 2009 and 2016, which places the emirate in third place alongside major upcoming destinations such as Osaka, Japan and Chengdu in China, and above established hubs such as Tokyo, Riyadh and Taipei in Taiwan. The report is produced on an annual basis, and features results gathered by field specialists through extensive research. The UAE capital was one of only three Arabian Gulf cities to make it into the top 50 overall rankings for destination cities in the world. Abu Dhabi has already posted record-breaking results in 2016, with more than four million guests checking into the emirate’s 168 hotels and hotel apartments in the first 11 months of the year. The strong performance of the emirate was underpinned by the 10

fact magazine

UAE capital hosting world-class events such as Abu Dhabi Summer Season, Abu Dhabi Food Festival, the Qasr Al Hosn Festival and a comprehensive programme of events to celebrate New Year in the city as well as successes in the MICE sector, with Abu Dhabi Convention Bureau, having a record-breaking year by securing agreements to host 14 conferences, which are expected to attract more than 35,000 delegates to the emirate in coming years. Another notable factor included the growth in Abu Dhabi’s cruise sector following the opening of the city’s permanent cruise terminal and the region’s first-ever cruise beach. HE Saif Saeed Ghobash, Director General, TCA Abu Dhabi, said: “The outstanding results offered in this year’s Global Destination Cities Index Report reflect Abu Dhabi’s ongoing successes in achieving global recognition as a leading international destination. “Welcoming a growing number of overnight visitors over the course of 2016 conveys our emirate’s commitment to providing the highest standards of hospitality, coupled with internationally recognised business and leisure opportunities,” he added. ✤ GO: Visit www.tcaabudhabi.ae for more information.

On display is photographic works that represent a truly new chapter in the creative process of the Emirati artist Lateefa Bint Maktoum. In her latest artworks there is a noticeable shift from post-photography montage to digital photography, meticulously constructing the scene before taking the shot, resulting in digital works that capture the changes of daily life through staging including the artists’ personal symbolism. “I had a need to produce these photographic works that transcribed the different stages and emotions I went through as I transitioned into motherhood,” Lateefa explains. “I feel that visitors of the exhibition will be able to relate to the works as they may discover emotions they themselves have been through, or one day will go through. “This body of work is a means to capture both the fleeting

moments and the lingering emotions of daily life that tell a lot about a family’s development as well as the memories we cherish,” she adds. Lateefa Bint Maktoum is an established visual artist exploring the creative possibilities of digital montage, and her artwork is included in private collections nationally and internationally. She has contributed to several international exhibitions worldwide, including in Venice, Washington, New York, Paris, Denver, Shanghai and Seoul, in addition to local exhibitions in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. In 2008 Lateefa bint Maktoum established Tashkeel to support the UAE’s creative community. Today the contemporary art organisation is committed to facilitating art and design practice, creative experimentation and cross-cultural dialogue. TRACING A UAE UNDERGROUND, 1988 - 2008

n the face of common challenges, artists are known to come together and create a space of encouragement – that is the basis of what this exciting exhibition highlights. Community has played a key role in every modern art historical breakthrough, with artists banding together around manifestos, or turning to one another for support when art institutions rejected their innovations. Art communities grow out of critical and creative exchange among peers and mentors. But We Cannot See Them: Tracing a UAE Underground, 1988 – 2008 focuses on one community of artists, sometimes called “the five”, at an intersection of visual artists, writers, and filmmakers based in the UAE. Its members identified with a new culture of encouraging radical, formal and conceptual experimentation. Eventually, some of these artists founded the celebrated Flying House. In tandem with this exhibition, The NYU Abu Dhabi Art Gallery is publishing a book of interviews with the artists. Together, the exhibition and book begin the process of tracing this pivotal artistic community in the key years of its formation. Maya Allison, Founding Director and Chief Curator of the NYU Abu Dhabi Art Gallery, says: “When I first met these artists

The exhibition was curated by Maya along with Exhibitions Curator Bana Kattan and research and programme development by Programmes Curator Alaa Edris. What’s it about: Two polar opposite high school teachers battle it out in the most epic fist fight their school has ever seen. What follows are some big time preparations for the off-the-playground fight and its hilarious consequences.

– The Great Wall

WHY IT’S WORTH WATCHING? Matt Damon teams up with Chinese bigwigs for the most expensive Chinese movie ever made! An epic culturalcrossover featuring Matt Damon and Pedro Pascal (GoT fans, you know who we mean!), The Great Wall is both historic and futuristic in its cinematic feats and storytelling. Directed by Zhang Yimou, known for his love of out-ofthis-world visuals, the movie has no lack of grandeur and colour. Mercenary soldiers William and Tovar unknowingly decapitate an unidentified creature while trying to save themselves and valiantly fight off these same creatures along with an elite army led by General Shao. Despite the claims of ‘Hollywood Whitewashing’ by Damon’s character, William can be seen being educated and disciplined by the Chinese all throughout the film. Shot entirely in China, the movie is peppered with Chinese symbolism and certainly evokes a range of emotions. If visual effects and CGI float your boat, you’re certainly going to see bang for your buck. It also features a little snippet of romance for all you love buffs out there. Remnants By LeAnn Rimes

What better way to kick-start the season of love than immersing yourself in the soulful vocals of Train? The San Fran band returns with their eighth studio album, A Girl, a Bottle, a Boat after the release of their cover album last year. The new record features their unique sound with an amalgamation of old and new musical styles. While it’s their first studio album without lead guitarist and founding member, Jimmy Stafford, they still sound as fresh as ever! Patrick Monahan fuses influences from the past 100 years of music into the band’s latest offering. The band avoids dabbling in something totally modern and out of their depth, sticking to their original music making. Play that song, is an upbeat, feel-good anthem with its chorus borrowed from the 1938 hit, Heart and Soul. The track deviates from their usual peppy beat but is just as contagious. While Lottery is a catchy dance number, perfect for Summer 2K17! The soundtrack gives us vintage Train vibes - if old-timey Train was your jam, you’ll be belting out this tune for days to come. The band creates lyrics that are genuine and personal to them – something that gets a big thumbs up from us. Here’s hoping they cease to go mainstream and embrace their much loved pop-rock roots!

If you can’t stop singing along to LeAnn Rimes’ How to kiss a boy, we don’t blame you! The country crooner returns with her 13th studio record release, Remnants. Country-esque guitar sequences and some brisk mid-tempo drumming are a staple all throughout the album. Long live love reminds us of a contemporary neo-gospel, whereas Do it wrong with me transports us to a magical evening of Jazz. The single How to kiss a boy ranges from restrained to powerful and emotive while telling a story in a way everyone can relate to. The album is a far cry from Rimes’ ‘one genre’ sounding records. It showcases diverse sounds while keeping her exquisite vocals intact. She’s moving past her personal troubles and is reminding everyone that she’s here to stay! The album is a work of optimism and also includes her cover of The story by Brad Carlile. She not just lends her voice to the mesmerising track but truly makes it her own. Remnants is certainly the best Rimes has delivered in years and is a welcome return to form. It deserves a listen!

If you have always viewed rest and relaxation as a sign of weakness and a waste of time, Alex Pang is here to debunk all your theories. Pang presents a fascinating argument for why rest is not just a way to unwind but it can also help you be more productive and creative. In a world where being busy is the norm, Pang makes you view rest in a whole new light. This New Year, rest more and work better. Perfect for the workaholic in your life!

o, the new Tiguan won’t be produced at the glass factory. It was just something impressive to see! Looking more like a posh design studio than an automotive production facility, with its glass and steel structure and polished wooden floors, it previously produced the luxury flagship VW Phaeton, but is now preparing to produce a new model from VW that they were very secretive about! So, back to the new Tiguan, the latest generation of VW ’s highly popular compact CUV. In the GCC, the models with come with three engine options: The 150hp turbocharged four-cylinder 1.4l TSI in the S and SE models, and the 180hp turbocharged four-cylinder 2.0l TSI which will be available in the SE and SEL variants. The 2.0l engine has also been uprated to 220hp for the

Sport model. All come with VW’s dualclutch DSG automatic gearboxes that offer smooth and rapid shifting. On the trip, we tried out the 2.0l TSI options in the SE and SEL models, which are mated to the 7-speed DSG gearbox. Of course, you can’t expect Golf-like levels of performance with the Tiguan, but having said that, for a CUV it certainly isn’t boring. It’s got great pickup, and you can throw it into corners with a confidence you just wouldn’t get with most other crossovers. What also always impresses with a VW, and very much so with the Tiguan, is the attention to detail when it comes to interior comfort and practicality.

The interior styling is supremely clean, modern and stylish, and it’s just a very comfortable place to be. There are plenty of pockets and cubbyholes to store that unavoidable junk that always seems to appear in a car (despite the extinction of CDs and roadmaps thanks to the smartphone!). It’s also hugely practical too, with back seats and front passenger seat that fold almost completely flat, and a big rear hatch for very easy access. The Tiguan’s crossover dimensions almost mean that the rear hatch is lower, making it much easier to load than the Touareg for the school run-mum with pushchair, schoolbags and shopping, etc. fact magazine

53

CITY RIDES

The boot space, rear legroom and headroom have all been improved over the outgoing Tiguan, which already boasted impressive comfort for a crossover. Despite all this, the new Tiguan still feels lighter, sportier and more agile, thanks to the new TSI engines and the 4MOTION all-wheeldrive system. It feels incredibly stable and safe on the road, and can even hold its own on many unpaved surfaces as well, although dune-bashing is obviously not what the Tiguan is built for! In terms of safety and driver assistance, the Tiguan now comes with Front Assist with City Emergency Braking and Pedestrian Monitoring, which assists if it recognises you’re about to have a collision with either a car in front or a wayward pedestrian. There’s also Lane Assist in case your concentration wanders and you’re drifting across the lines. And finally, Adaptive Cruise Control is always a firm favourite of ours, with the Tiguan matching the speed of the car in front in traffic, keeping a safe distance for you at all times. The Tiguan will be available in the Gulf starting at around AED90,000 for the base-spec S model, with the top-spec Sport ringing up at AED132,000. ✤ 54

FOUR RACES INTO THE 12-RACE SEASON AND THERE’S NOTHING TO SPLIT THE TOP TWO DRIVERS, BOTH OF WHOM SIT ON 90 POINTS EACH. FACT CAUGHT UP WITH ONE OF THE POTENTIAL WINNERS, CHARLIE FRIJNS AHEAD OF THE LAST FEW RACES… Hi Charlie! Take us back to when you first got into racing - what’s your earliest memory of the sport? For as long as I could remember, I was always eager and excited to turn 16, pass my test and get my license. I was also very excited to start racing fast cars and get on the track with my father as he was a racing driver on the side of being a businessman. When I turned 17, I entered my first race alongside him and it was an incredible moment for us to be racing together. We raced in Porsche cars in Europe and took part in different championships where you can change drivers. I took on these opportunities to push hard and learn as much as I can. Also, the more my father was occupied with business, the more I was able to practice and gain experience behind the wheel. What is your preparation like for the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Middle East and have you made any modifications to your racing car? This is one of the very unique things that make the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Middle East a rare racing series. It is a one-make series where all drivers are racing the same car – nothing on the engines can be changed and the only modification allowed is on the breaks, tyre pressure and the car’s balance. In preparation for a race, we get a load of track time to test our car and look at the data for areas 56

of improvement. We enjoy a full day of testing and free practice sessions to get things in place before going on the track for a race. This racing series purely focuses on the skill of the driver more than anything else – we’re all driving the same car which pushes us all to develop our racing skills. If you take the Formula One as an example, drivers are each representing a different brand or in different cars and generally, the more powerful engines always take home the checkered flag only because they’re faster. I think this is where the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge can be more interesting for motorsport heads. How would you describe your experience so far in Season 8 of the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Middle East? To start with, I would say there is no better place than to be sitting at the top of the championship. Competition is very high this season which makes winning two races even more special to me. Especially after a three year wait!

Although I am pleased with my performance, it definitely hasn’t been easy but I’m determined to stay at the front and to push harder and build on what I’ve started. What do you like most about being a race car driver? Porsche is a well-established brand and to be building my racing career as part of their racing series is something I’m very proud of. I work hard and to be able to break out of business and get into an activity I enjoy and I’m passionate about, racing on weekends is an opportunity I wholeheartedly look forward to. The Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Middle East is a professional series and allows us to compete on some of the best tracks in the world – being in this part of the world to race is an experience I like to make the most of as a car racer. ✤ GO: The final race of the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Middle East will take place at the Bahrain Formula One Grand Prix in April. TOYOTA AND MASDAR COLLABORATION Toyota Motor Corporation has agreed to collaborate with Masdar, Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), Air Liquide, and Toyota distributor Al-Futtaim Motors in a joint research programme to explore the potential of hydrogen energy use in the UAE for the creation of a sustainable, low-carbon society. As part of the programme, Toyota will begin driving and refueling demonstration tests of the Mirai fuel cell vehicle (FCV) in the UAE from May 2017. The programme partners will jointly research on key issues involving the establishment of a hydrogen-based society, including hydrogen production, logistics, scalability, and business feasibility. The research is expected to take place in part at Masdar Institute, an Abu Dhabi-based independent graduate research university, which has been part of the discussions on the scope of hydrogen research. Mr. Takeshi Uchiyamada, Chairman of the Toyota Motor Corporation Board of Directors, said: “The UAE has vast potential for the expansion of hydrogen production. The country has excess capacity at hydrogen production facilities located at oil refineries, and the ability to produce hydrogen as a byproduct at caustic soda and

other factories, not to mention the production potential from mega solar power stations.” Utilising a hydrogen station that is to be built in May 2017, Toyota will conduct a complete range of driving and refueling tests under extreme heat, dust, and other conditions unique to the local environment. Toyota will also provide short-term leases to the UAE government institutions and opinion leaders so as to promote better understanding of FCVs and hydrogen-based societies. “As the government continues to promote new initiatives and pursues the creation of a hydrogen-based society, the UAE is able to emerge as the world leader of next-generation clean energies,” Mr. Uchiyamada added. Powered with an Intel Celeron N3060 processor, one 5-watt tweeter and one 10-watt woofer, it aims to eliminate the audio issue faced with other smart assistants in the market. Lenovo surely takes its sound seriously as the device also comes in a premium Harman Kardon edition with superior sound, along with the standard model. Amazon Echo and Google Home have been ruling the smart assistant domain, but when it comes to audio, Lenovo’s smart assistant certainly bites the bullet to astounding aesthetic and technical delivery. By coupling the best in software technology and audio in the market, Lenovo is truly on to something big! Though its concept doesn’t do much to completely excite us, its design along with noise suppression and echo cancellation is certainly an improvement. Otherwise, the Lenovo Smart Assistant isn’t all that different from the Amazon Echo. Considering they both share a digital assistant, there’s no wonder that the appliances mirror each other so closely. One bonus is that the Lenovo Smart Assistant is priced cheaper than the Amazon Echo, making it the more pocket-friendly choice. Also, when paired with Alexa, the smart assistant will work across Lenovo’s ecosystem of products as well. The Lenovo device will be connected with a Lenovo app and will work both on iOS and Android. Its new tech elements make the Lenovo Smart Assistant an appealing device, but can it match up to the existing gadgets in the virtual assistance world? That remains to be seen. ✤ 62

FASHION FOCUS

WOMEN

The focus is all on the clothes, which mix powerful tailoring with Swedish heritage and handicraft. There’s a fresh interest in a feminine silhouette created by the shoulders and waist, with added drama and posture from gaucho hats and cowboy boots. This collection is about the strength and beauty of women, and how ladies express that power through their style. There’s a strong contrast of tailoring with neat handicraft touches of Swedish folklore, giving the collection’s attire for women a whole new perspective on comfort, embellishment and structure.

MEN

Elevating classic looks, the men’s collection interprets fashion through the quality of the fabrics presented in each carefully designed piece. Using quality garments, timeless style is given a new lease of life; the typical bomber jacket is elongated for a modern twist, and traditional fabrics like wintery corduroy take on utilitarian shapes, and knitwear comes in innovative patterns like irregular ribbing or deconstructed cableknits. T-shirts and tops are presented in silk and fine pima cottons, while accessories like mohair beanies, wool scarves and leather shoes make for excellent wardrobe accompaniments. ✤

MAKE LUNCH AND DINNER A JOY TO PREPARE WITH LAKELAND’S AMAZING RANGE OF INNOVATIVE COOKING APPLIANCES… TEFAL OLEOCLEAN PRO Tefal designed the OleoClean to eliminate two of deep frying’s biggest headaches: cleaning the fryer and changing the oil, and thanks to their clever oil drainage and storage system, they have achieved just that. The OleoClean will automatically drain and filter cooled oil into the integrated oil box which can then be removed for storage, or you can return it to the bottle. There’s no more tipping, sieving or spilling and your oil stays cleaner and lasts longer for healthier frying. When it comes to cleaning the fryer, it couldn’t be easier as everything except the element can go straight in the dishwasher leaving you with a clean machine, and a supply of cleaned oil, ready for next time.

TEFAL ACTIFRY 2-IN-1 Cook a 1.5kg batch of homemade chips with just one tablespoon of oil and the meat or fish in the tray above. Patented technology circulates hot air all around for healthier cooking, and the result is perfectly cooked chips with only three per cent fat. An odour filter keeps your kitchen fresh, and there’s no oil to filter.

STEAMA A steamer with a difference, Steama has three airtight containers in which you can store prepared food until you’re ready to cook. With a generous nine litre steaming capacity, instant steam function and 1.2 litre tank with easy side-fill access.

LAKELAND 1.5 LITRE COMPACT FRYER Easy to use, with a viewing window in the lid, our compact fryer holds 1.5 litres of oil and 350g chips. A handy little machine that’s great for onion rings too, it has a cool-touch handle, stainless steel casing and adjustable temperature control. fact magazine

JAPANESE MAGIC AT ZUMA

Say the word Zuma and pretty much everyone’s eyes will light up. This international franchise has a hugely popular concept that has done super well in Abu Dhabi. But what is it that makes even the most discerning foodie fall in love with this place? FACT’s Angela Beitz caught up with Head Chef Mario Fico to talk about (and taste) the restaurant’s mesmerising menu for this month’s chef’s table experience. fact magazine

A

rriving at Zuma is always an exciting experience with the cool vibe and moodlit interiors; the setting and décor is enough to make a great first impression with high ceilings and a cube-style bar leading out to an intimate dining area. The space is super chic, and the view overlooking the water surrounding Al Marayh Island is the icing on the cake. Here, the menu is made up of so many delicious options that it’s hard to choose, but luckily we’re here for a very special chef ’s table experience with Head Chef Mario Fico who brings us a variety of dishes that any Japanese food lover would be over the moon to try! The staff at Zuma are charismatic yet laid back; their service is truly impeccable as you’re given enough space to relax and chat away, and enough information about the food you’ll be eating when you ask. This is something we hugely appreciate because it takes off any pressure and you can enjoy your food as you wish! On our visit, the restaurant is packed but service remains flawless and charming. We start with two types of edamame, sea salt and sweet chilli, both are excellent and set the scene for a great dinner. Then like magic, plates of sliced yellowtail with green chilli relish, ponzu and pickled garlic, alongside a helping of seared beef with soy, ginger, lime and coriander as well as Zuma’s famous tuna tataki made up of sliced seared tuna with chilli daikon and ponzu sauce, all appear on our table. It’s hard to pick a favourite as each dish is fresh, flavour-packed and just down right delicious. The tuna tataki is, as always, a clear winner and the seared beef stays on our mind for a good few days afterwards. Impressed yet? We’re then treated to the most beautifully-presented sushi platter. Generously topped with classic sushi, nigiri, California maki and delicious sashimi – there’s something for every raw food enthusiast. We simply loved the presentation and debated over which piece to devour first. In the end, it was survival of the fittest (or rather the fastest) as chopsticks navigated their 80

For mains, we were again treated to a number of standout dishes including the zesty Zuma salad with asparagus, tomato and ginger miso dressing; the tender chicken skewers with baby leek, alongside the famous, melt-inyour-mouth miso marinated black cod wrapped in hoba leaf, as well as the spicy beef tenderloin with sesame, red chilli and sweet soy and the Japanese sweetcorn with shiso butter. Every dish is as mind blowing as the next – meat is cooked perfectly, vegetable brings a gorgeous crunch whilst the dressings are mouthwatering to say the least. This is the thing about Zuma; consistency. It’s one of the reasons that keeps guests coming back for more. Teamed with high standards, impressive fare and friendly service, it’s no wonder that this place was crowned both Best Japanese Restaurant and Best Restaurant in Abu Dhabi at the 2016 FACT Dining Awards. Q&A

CHEF MARIO FICO What is your food philosophy? At Zuma, the emphasis is on the quality of ingredients – combining these to compliment the individual flavours and textures; this is the key for me. What was the approach to creating the menu for the restaurant? All the Zuma locations internationally have a huge quantity of dishes that Rainer Becker, creator and co-founder, launched at the original Zuma London 15 years ago. Each restaurant has the same ethos when it comes to individual dish creation – our seasonal dishes reflect this. Seasonal dishes are generally unique to the individual locations and celebrate local products and the creativity of each of the teams. How do you keep up the worldwide reputation that Zuma has? By believing every single day in what we do and never becoming complacent in our achievements; we are always looking to improve from better to best. Why do you think Zuma is such a popular concept? Zuma is an authentic Japanese restaurant but not traditional. We focus not only on serving excellent food but also on delivering a fantastic service in a very relaxed yet sophisticated atmosphere. It’s a kind of restaurant that you can laugh out loud in and just enjoy. When Zuma first opened in 2002 in London, Rainer never thought it would be this successful or expand in other territories, as he always says, it’s all about “details, details, details”. What are your personal favorite dishes to cook at Zuma? There are so many to choose from. Perhaps the seabass with yuzu truffle dressing and salmon roe or tuna tataki with braised 82

fact magazine

onion and garlic chips. Both are Rainer’s original dishes. What do you love about working at Zuma? The hard work infused with the fun, the feeling of belonging to a “family” and the idea of always looking and searching for the best in all our products. What do you like to eat when you’re at home? Very simple food, soups and salads, though a pasta dish must be prepared to

keep my Italian blood in circulation. I’m also a big lover of cheese, especially when accompanied with a good wine. What are your other favourite restaurants in Abu Dhabi and why? Simplicity and honest taste are key factors when I am deciding where to dine. I find this good combination in Meylas (Al Muneera), a warm and welcoming setting with Emirati “old fashion” recipes – simple, fresh and tasty. ✤

FOODIE CORNER

F

rom its blue and white façade to its taverna-style décor inside, Acropolis Greek Restaurant reminds us of being on a sunny island in Greece where small cafes and local eateries line harbour fronts and beach sides, cooking up the most traditional and tasty Greek cuisine. You’ll find a slice of this unique dining atmosphere at Acropolis. From the moment we step in, the staff is friendly and attentive without being obtrusive. They’re knowledgeable on the menu and will even help you perfect how to say the names of the dishes in Greek – it’s a fun and casual setting, just like you’d expect to find in any Grecian home. Much like the homeland, fresh, seasonal ingredients are important to the menu at Acropolis, and many items come straight from Greece. Our table is laid out with a blue and white chequered cloth topped with a small vase of flowers, a candle and basic drinking glasses – THIS is what Greek dining is all about – unpretentious simplicity. After having a good look through the menu, which is made up of salads, mezze, mains, grills, and desserts, we’re spoilt for choice and super excited to devour the incoming convoy of Greek food. We begin with the humble Prasini, a bowl of green lettuce with grilled halloumi cheese and balsamic. Of course, fresh salads are a staple of Greek fare, so if a restaurant can get something as simple as this right, then it’s doing a good job. Not only does Acropolis nail it with crunchy greens and super tasty halloumi, we’re so impressed that this becomes our insta-worthy dish of the evening! Kolokithokeftedes (try saying that really fast) are up next. These heavenly zucchini patties are crispy indulgence, dipped in mint and yogurt – we literally fought for the last piece, it was THAT GOOD! Next came the one thing that can make or break your Greek cuisine experience; the famous Spanakopita. It took only one bite of the spinach and feta cheese stuffed filo for the biggest smiles to appear on everyone’s face – a fabulous mezze dish that even the most picky eaters won’t turn down – yummy. The mains were a whole different ball game. We went for the Ya ya’s Mousaka - eggplant prepared in the oven with mince meat, bechamel sauce and gratinated with cheese;

“ KOLOKITHOKEFTEDES (TRY SAYING THAT REALLY FAST) ARE UP NEXT. THESE HEAVENLY ZUCCHINI PATTIES ARE CRISPY INDULGENCE, DIPPED IN MINT AND YOGURT – WE LITERALLY FOUGHT FOR THE LAST PIECE, IT WAS THAT GOOD!”

the Pastitsio - Prepared in the oven with pippe pasta, fresh tomatoes, cream bechamel and gratinated with cheese; and the Gemista - stuffed peppers, tomatoes and zucchini with aromatic rice and vegetables. Not only is every dish a reminder of the hearty and rich ingredients that the Greeks love to use in their cooking, but they each play to the palates of everyone at the table. The first is a beautifully presented, filling main. The combination of meat and cheese is an indulgent affair for our taste buds. The second satisfies all the carb-cravings of the FACT team, and the latter of the three is perfection on a plate for our vegetarian friends – success. Dessert comes in two generous-sized portions; Karidopita – walnut pie served with pine tree icea cream, and Siropiasta – a selection of traditional Greek sweets with pistachio and vanilla ice cream. There’s one thing that stood out about each; individual flavours! If you want a break from the usual chocolate fondant-type sweet treat, these desserts will please. Acropolis not only gave us great food but it brought back memories of a loving, family atmosphere that is so special to Greece and its people. If that sounds like your kind of dining experience, Acropolis will deliver 100 per cent. ✤ GO: Visit Acropolis at Le Meridien Village Abu Dhabi. Open for dinner from 7pm to 11pm. ou might be tricked into believing that Hakkasan Abu Dhabi is for only the very top of society. The elegant, designer-wearing crowd that is all about crazy-cool mixology and the most exquisite food. You’d be right about the quality food and drinks, but don’t be fooled about the clientele. In fact, this was a misconception, admittedly, that we had formed about this stunning place. To our pleasant surprise, the evening we chose to dine at Hakkasan Abu Dhabi was not only busy with diners, there was a huge mix of guests from families with children, couples, both young and old, groups of friends, colleagues and business acquaintances, and even a few solo diners, all enjoying the lavish offerings. Unexpectedly, we felt a LOT more comfortable than imagined! Comprising a restaurant, bar and lounge as well as four private dining rooms, the 16,000sqft space is separated by carved wooden screens and latticing that echo the rich interiors of the London flagship restaurant. The space is designed with a modern ethnic ethos, adorned in embroidered furniture and marbled Chinese forms. The main dining area is crafted into a wooden cage surrounded by backlit blue glass and a stainless steel frame – with the right lighting; the venue will make an envious Facebook check-in photo! As soon as we manage to take our eyes off the beautiful interiors, we decide to take a seat in the outdoor area (dining al fresco is a must here). We’re welcomed with a hot towel and a quick but precise introduction to the menu. 90

To drink, we’d highly recommend the Shanghai Iced Tea – a lip-licking liquid concoction that lovers of iced tea will appreciate. We start with the Vegetarian Hakka fried dim sum platter, made up of mooli roll and box dumpling. It’s the presentation followed by the crispy freshness of each perfectly-parcelled dim sum that has us in awe. We’re only sorry that that we had to share the starter between two people – it’s SO delish. Our mains were mix of sensory dishes – each fulfilling a craving for meat, chicken and seafood. The Brasied Wagyu Beef Cheek Szechuan Style was MIND. BLOWING. Think tender pieces of meat enveloped in a beautifully garlic-peppersoy sauce – heaven on a plate. The Crispy Mango Chicken with Thai Chilli Sauce was a great option for those at the table who didn’t want to go completely exotic on their food choice. It was familiar yet packed amazing flavour! The dish of the night award goes to the Stir-Fry Chilean Sea Bass with baiyu mushroom and King soya sauce. Talk about tasty – paired with

a side of sticky rice, you’ve got a recipe of Michelin Star calibre. Desserts followed suit as the Chocolate Fondant with banana ice cream and the Coconut Semifreddo with coconut ice cream, both landed on our tables. After doing the mandatory snapchat posts, we tucked in. The first we are dead cert will impress every chocolate enthusiasts, whilst the second will leave you with all the happy feels from its refreshing and inventive presentation and superb taste – winner. Don’t let the dramatic exterior and its location at the breathtaking Emirates Palace put you off. here’s nothing better than a trip to the spa to rejuvenate yourself and to put a spring back in your step. If you’re looking for pure relaxation then a visit to Remède Spa is an absolute must. The Remède Spa brand is well known in New York, San Francisco and Singapore and the branch here certainly impresses. The stunning spa is a real sanctuary for guests looking to unwind in one of the 11 treatment rooms, the wet area (it features an amazing jacuzzi) or the relaxation lounge where a menu of exotic teas is offered. The rooms are beautiful and spacious, with lots of white marble and the interior follows the hotel’s Art Deco

theme. After we’ve slipped into a sumptuous robe we’re ushered to the Aloe treatment room by our lovely therapist, and choose the muscle relaxation oil for our Remède customised massage. This oil has a sharp clove and orange scent designed for tired muscles. Being a customised massage, the treatment allows for greater focus on individual needs. We ask for a deep tissue massage and our therapist works at our tired and knotted muscles using stretching techniques and strong strokes for thorough relaxation. A great deal of attention is paid to our very sore upper back and neck where there is a lot of deep-seated tension. The whole experience is blissful and we feel

SPA REVIEW soothed from the calming orange and clove oil. Then it’s time for our Remède Spa facial which is personalised to suit our dry skin, using products from the Remède brand which feel fresh and hydrating. Our lackluster skin is triple-cleansed, assessed and followed by a spot of microdermabrasion, a facial massage, foot massage and some extractions. A thick hydrating mask with an oxygen treatment to plump up the skin finish off the facial. We feel completely refreshed and our skin is glowing. We finish the treatment by reclining on a day bed in the relaxation room with lemongrass tea and fruit, looking out over the Corniche. The St. Regis Abu Dhabi is the perfect place to stay given its central location and amazing facilities. The thing that truly sets it apart though is the warm and genuinely staff. Nothing is too much trouble for them and you’ll feel well and truly looked after in the most magnificent surroundings. Heaven! ✤ GO: Visit Remede Spa at The St. Regis Abu Dhabi.
