Single? Taken? Always Hungry?

What the world really needs is more love and less paperwork. - Pearl Bailey

H

ey friends – those closest to me will tell you that those two words are my most expressive. If that’s how I greet you, I might as well be saying “I love you” – indirectly, but with a lot more enthusiasm. It turns out that, after an entire month of typing the word Valentine’s hundreds of times, I’m still no closer to figuring out how I really feel about this annual and very corporate celebration of love. On one hand, February 14 in all its candy, card and flowers glory is a commerciallydriven day, and on the other it’s when love-budding wild hearts, both young and old, get to do something special for one another. Who wants to get bitter about that? Not me. For all the right reasons, Valentine’s Day in Abu Dhabi can be your most memorable yet – and you know that this city doesn’t do things unless it’s all the way up to 100. Turn to p25 and check out Show Me Love where we bring you everything from dinner dates, sweet afternoon treats, spa indulgence, romantic revelry, and beautiful gifts to inspire your plans! If you’re really looking to impress, head straight to p54 and check out this month’s Staycation Spotlight at the instagramworthy and picturesque Jumeirah at Saadiyat Island Resort. A few days here and you’ll be in the good books for a very long time! My very own love affair, with the one thing that never lets me down in Abu Dhabi (or life) continues this month. You’ve guessed it: F.O.O.D. For all the palatepleasing pleasures in the city, we’ve tasted some of the most amazing cuisines and dishes in the capital this month. Our New in Town takes us to the seafood delicacies of Fishmarket, an iconic dining destination that stays true to its roots with a new lease of life (p83). In Sahha, all-day dining is elevated to show that it’s a serious contender in the food game (p87), and in the Culinary Spotlight, we stop by a restaurant that is timeless, romantic and the perfect spot for a guaranteed delicious date night – Hakkasan (p91). That’s what I call love; your favourite Netflix series on the TV and a table full of takeout to share with all your “hey friends” people. Plus, the only thing better than a Christmas playlist is a cheesy Valentine’s playlist – nothing better than a little Luther Vandross to annoy – I mean, motivate the whole office, right? Of course, a shiny diamond or a plane ticket to Paris wouldn’t hurt too... a girl can only dream. ☺

BUTCHER & STILL FOOD TRUCK Innovative restaurant experience brings the spirit of the iconic 1920’s Chicago Steakhouse to the UAE. BUTCHER & STILL’S FOOD truck brings the spirit of the iconic 1920’s Chicago Steakhouse at Four Seasons Hotel Abu Dhabi to the UAE. Premium yet approachable, the concept brings an innovative chef-driven concept to the country’s luxury restaurant and bar space. A true master of his craft, Director of Food and Beverage Carlo Laiso and his team always choose the road less taken when creating something for Four Seasons guests. “We are always eager to innovate in the market, to push the boundaries and create bold and unexpected concepts in a way that only Four Seasons can,” he said. “What guests see is the result of more than two years of collaboration and hard work. In the food truck space, we are first movers, offering an experience that will capture the imagination of our clients. What is most exciting however, is the paradox of creating something humble and seamlessly infusing our identity as a premium, 1920s Chicago Steakhouse.” The shell of the new Butcher & Still Food Truck is a nostalgiainvoking Airstream trailer, the stuff of legends in American touring culture. Rustic, yet elegant its silver patina is the definition of relaxed luxury. This sumptuous design is enhanced by cues taken from the restaurant’s most recognisable details including a rich leather chef’s table reminiscent of the plush banquettes clients have come to know and love, as well as the infamous AK-47 bullet print skirting the perimeter of the truck. However, one of the greatest details is the reinterpretation of the outlet’s signature show kitchen, which breaks down the barrier between 14

fact magazine

chefs and guests, allowing them to connect. Laiso reiterates: “Each detail is selected with purpose to convey what makes Butcher & Still truly extraordinary from the concept, the menu, and most importantly, the people.” Deeply comforting and supremely satisfying, the menu of Butcher & Still’s food truck is all about refining all-American classics, offering a premium experience while retaining the essence of those democratic and widely-loved dishes. A longheld ambition of American Restaurant Chef Marshall Roth, crafting this menu has been a passion project, as these dishes are a part of his identity and universally loved. He said: “Our job as chefs is to connect people, to conjure up memories of meals spent with friends and families, of life’s special occasions by sharing our passion. With each dish we are trying to get to the core of what we all love about these dishes and elevate them through the power of our products,” he added. “For example, our signature cheeseburger features a homemade toasted brioche bun, rich Creekstone Farms beef, a high-quality cheddar cheese, and fresh greens. It’s simple but it is exactly what you picture when that burger craving hits.” The food truck’s other signature dishes include the Chicago dog, a Kansas City burnt ends sandwich, chicken wings and truffle fries. ✤

THE LEGENDARY ADDRESS FOR many incredible parties and memorable steak dinners celebrates 25 years of its success in the capital’s hospitality sector with the launch of a new, bigger location. Moving across the road from its Al Diar Dana Hotel location, 49er’s has taken the Gold Rush over to Le Meridien Abu Dhabi in Tourist Club Area, where it now enjoys an increased seating capacity of 180 guests split between cosy booths, a variety of high tables and a lengthy bar. Bernald Vallely, General Manager of 49er’s Steakhouse and Club, said: “There aren’t many businesses in town that can share a success story like that of 49er’s. Ever since its launch in 1995, the venue at Al Diar Dana Hotel has been packed night after night. “We are honoured to call another historic property in the capital our new home,” he continued. “With our move to Le Meridien Abu Dhabi, we have a bigger location to accommodate our guests for the next 25 years and more, and also offer an extensive menu, a casual Friday brunch and many more exciting theme nights.” The new address transports guests to the setting of a classic Western, complete with swinging saloon doors at the entrance, saddles slung over railings, wooden benches and leather bar stools, mounted longhorns on the walls, and an entire team playing their part in costume. Birds of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn

WHAT’S IT ABOUT:

WHAT’S IT ABOUT?

Following the events of Suicide Squad, Harley Quinn splits with the Joker and joins superheroes Black Canary, Huntress and Renee Montoya. When a narcissistic crime lord known as Black Mask places a target on a young girl named Cassandra Cain, Harley and the superheroes protect the girl and defeat Sionis.

DIRECTOR: Cathy Yan CAST: Margot Robbie, Bryan Unkeless

WHY IT’S WORTH WATCHING?

Giving the amazing Harley Quinn the spotlight she deserves, Cathy Yan’s Birds of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn offers a quirky twist to the conventional superhero storyline. The eighth film in the DC Extended Universe and a follow-up spin-off to 2016’s Suicide Squad, Birds of Prey features Harley Quinn and her own team of female superheroes. Bringing Harley’s spunky energy front and centre, the world of Birds of Prey is very different to its predecessors in terms of the aesthetic and tone - but just as fascinating. Set after the events of Suicide Squad, Harley Quinn has split from the Joker and Batman has disappeared, leaving Gotham City vulnerable. As Cassandra Cain, a young girl, comes across a diamond belonging to crime lord Black Mask, Harley teams up with Black Canary, Huntress and Renee Montoya to help save her from the evil crime lord. What follows is Harley’s journey to start a whole new life as she overcomes her breakup with the Joker and leads an all-girl gang to take on a dangerous mob boss. Sounds like a whole lot of bad-a$$ fun!

Manic

By Halsey

With the release of her highly anticipated third album, Manic, Halsey is gearing up for a whole new era of music. Blessing us with the unexpected, the singer’s latest offering has us jumping in our seats with excitement. Moving away from the dystopian fantasy world genre, the album is more about Halsey’s current worldview. Sampling a mix of everything from hiphop and rock to country, the record gives her a chance to express herself like never before. A gorgeous pop and electropop composition, “Graveyard” is all about loving someone who is in a bad place and unknowingly following them into this bad place. A relatable and pleasing track, it has all the makings of a quintessential Halsey song. On the other hand, “Without Me”, a mid-tempo pop and R&B track interpolates Justin Timberlake’s “Cry Me a River”. Bringing the singer’s raw and honest side to the fore, her raspy vocals and unfiltered lyrics embolden the track and hold nothing back. Making us fall in love with her all over again, Halsey offers a soundtrack in which no song is similar to the other. Displaying a sense of duality, vulnerable lyrics and intoxicating vocals, Manic is all set to become another notch on Halsey’s musical belt.

POP/DANCE

Rare

By Selena Gomez

Making a comeback into the limelight with her newly enlightened self, Rare sees Selena Gomez returning to the musical scene at her assertive best. One of the best pop albums in recent times, Rare is a compilation of everything that the singer has overcome and experienced in her time away from the spotlight. A celestial ballad chronicling her journey to wellness and the drama surrounding her life, “Lose You to Love Me” is hands down one of the best songs on the album. The stripped back emotional track sees the singer laying her heart bare, surrounded with somber yet enthralling piano chords. Celebrating her newfound peace and clarity, the album sees Selena taking chances and getting out of her comfort zone. A fresh and upbeat danceable track, “Look at Her Now” is all about bouncing back from heartbreak. The empowering techno vibes are all we need to start this New Year off right! Offering a consistently unified sound across the tracks, Rare suggests tanatlising new directions for the singer.

When Julian Jessop, an eccentric, lonely artist leaves a green journal about his life in a local café, it brings together six strangers and leads to unexpected friendship, and even love. The novel’s quirky set of characters including a fabulous mommy Instagrammer and a charming addict make for a heartbreakingly sad and painfully true narrative. A story about being brave and putting your most authentic self forward is an uplifting novel.

BEAUTY IN DIVERSITY

Dubai-based Kristel Bechara is an award-winning contemporary artist from Lebanon, whose artwork illustrates the revolutionary creation of photographic imagery with oil, acrylic and giclée printmaking mediums to depict emotion. Having showcased her work in galleries worldwide; from Tokyo to Milan, Brussels and France, it was here at World Art Dubai 2018 that the mother-of-two received the UAE Resident Artist Award for her Beauty in Diversity collection. ARTS Q&A •

Hi Kristel! Tell us more about your journey into art - how did you get started and what inspires your work? I am influenced by my late father, who was a surrealist artist and sculptor. I must have gotten his gift and I have been encouraged to express myself and create art ever since I was a child. My transition from art hobbyist into a professional artist started about 12 years ago when I moved to Dubai and started experimenting with a new style that combines my fondness of artistic styles into one medium; combining my love of fabrics, graphic patterns and painting into a single dynamic and colourful artwork that expresses beauty in diversity of various topics. Your work is stunning. There is a sense of spirited freedom and vibrant use of colours. What is it about creating this unique form of art that grips you? Thank you! I generally select topics that move me and have an impact on my emotions during a period of time but generally both extremes of the happiness and sadness spectrum have the most lasting impact on me and on my art.

Describe your artistic style for someone who is viewing your work for the first time… I always wanted to have a signature style through which I could express myself. So, the whole idea was to have silhouettes in blacks, whites and greys with colour thrown in. It’s just my perspective on things. Is there a message that you’re trying to convey through your art? “Beauty in Diversity” is the statement that defines my art. Our world is beautiful because it is diverse and full of contrast. I try my hardest to highlight this aspect through my artwork and show that our differences are what makes us unique and divine; we should embrace theses diversities and develop and open our minds to tolerance and inclusion. What do you think about the art scene in the UAE - are there any challenges faced by contemporary artists and is there room for improvement? • ARTS Q&A significant growth year on year. People in Dubai specifically are culturally diverse and they love art. Because of the incredible economic opportunity that the city presents to majority of its residents, a lot of them can afford to collect art. Dubai represents an opportunity for uprising artists to interact with collectors and potentially serve as a launching pad into a successful career. The most challenging part is not UAE specific but rather a universal profession issue – developing your own style that is instantly attributed to the artist takes a lot of time and requires significant sacrifices without guaranteed successful outcome – artists need to transition from an amateur artist to a full-time professional artist by leaving behind an careers and taking a gamble that their art is going to be popular and commercially viable. Your artwork can be deemed revolutionary for its methods. Tell us about some of the materials, tools and techniques that you use and why these in particular…. I endeavor to make my art evoke a sense of joy and intense emotions. My methods involve characteristic stencil-like drawings and sketching combined with modern mixed media lines to form multi layered paintings. My art style is best identified by its dynamic patterns and expressive colours using oil, acrylic and giclée printmaking mediums to depict emotion. • ARTS Q&A that evoke some feelings and emotions. Every painting starts with an idea /statement / object that becomes at that moment in time important for me to express in an artwork. I then endlessly sketch and doodle until my emotions and thoughts about that particular topic crystallise in my mind and I finally figure out the best way to represent / express it on canvas. The final and longest step in the process is the selection and application of the color palette. Often, I work on more than one artwork at a time, each will be at a different stage of the process. How has social media affected you as an artist - has the impact been positive or otherwise? I first published my work through social media and received an order within the hour. Social media presence is assuring that there is greater attention to the work. I think it’s important in terms of reaching out to other artists and collectors. I, for one, have not done any advertising for my works but just put up images with hashtags and that has attracted a lot of followers, collectors and gallerists. Who are some of your biggest artistic influences and why? My absolute influence is Henri Matisse - the greatest color maestro to have ever lived - he is such an inspiration across culture that I sometimes feel he is not given enough credit. His color palettes are the baseline of what we now consider as beauty norms across many industries (from fashion to architecture). Some of my favourite artists are Andy Warhol, Miriam Shapiro and Frida Kahlo. What is your advice for young budding artists? WINTER AT

WAREHOUSE421 Warehouse421’s line-up for its Winter Programme presents a variety of exhibitions, workshops, short courses, and events designed to enable creative learning opportunities and encourage the exploration of regional themes.

D

uring the winter programme, which runs until March, Warehouse421 is set to work with a range of local, regional and international partners and collaborators to present diverse and involving artistic experiences for the local

community. Opening on March 7, The Cup and the Saucer explores individualism as part of the self in the wider whole, from a variety of disciplinary backgrounds, and evokes as its titular inspiration the metaphoric and momentary divorce that takes place when a cup parts from its saucer, and how, within that moment, a single item breaks into two. March will also see a workshop and a roundtable discussion that will offer further insight into the exhibition. Faisal Al Hassan, Manager of Warehouse421, said: “At Warehouse421, we have sought to develop an engaging and immersive series of public programing and exhibitions that work to bolster the emergent creative community in the UAE and the region. “Over the course of the next three months, we aim to emphasize the wide range of arts and design present in the UAE and the Middle East, in order to support the suffusion of creative practices, bringing art closer to the community and cultivating its positive impact on all of us,” he added. “This season, our programming presents a new exhibition, The Cup and the Saucer, with artist Hashel Al Lamki and the talented curator Munira Al Sayegh. The exhibition places an emphasis on engaging critically with materials and creative processes; and the opportunities to explore further arts and cultural frontiers in the UAE, in order to collectively provide new avenues for creative learning and immersion,” Faisal shared. Additionally, How to Maneuver: Shape-shifting texts and other publishing tactics, will run through to February 16. Featuring over 40 pieces of work from artists, architects and designers, the exhibition questions the boundaries separating Publishing from independent publishing, or mainstream from alternative cultural production, with an aim to understand the act of publishing, or making something public. The exhibition’s program will feature a Publishing Maneuvers Symposium that will take place on the February 7 and 8. Making its 2020 debut at Warehouse421 is a series of programmes designed to allow the creative community in the 48

Renowned locally based artists Ramin Haerizadeh, Rokni Haerizadeh & Hesam Rahmanian; Shaikha Al Mazrou; and Mohamed Ahmed Ibrahim will all lead sessions, taking place at different times over the winter season. The artists have devised the sessions uniquely to combine theory and practice. Additionally, Warehouse421 is collaborating with the GoetheInstitut for a workshop titled Site Specificity and the Director’s Eye, facilitated by award-winning director and producer, Stephan Koplowitz. The three-day workshop will provide insights on the production and creation of site-specific performances, which are inspired by design, history and the context of the space. A three-part workshop series will be led by Egyptian fashion designer, Engy Mahdy, on the process of creating garments, from the basics of sewing to completing a draped garment. Meanwhile, workshops on Palestinian embroidery, or Tatreez, will return to Warehouse421, led by UAE multidisciplinary artist, Joanna Barakat, along with the popular Contemporary Jewelry Making Series, teaching participants the processes of making leather and crochet jewellery. One of the most pleasant surprises, and a core value that makes the hotel stand out even more is their dedication to keeping with the location. The 293-room hotel values sustainable tourism with a plastic-free approach and no use of straws. So, when you check-in, you’ll be given a neon-coloured single-use plastics bottle which you can re-fill at different points around the hotel to stay hydrated. Genius! ISLAND LIFE The property’s 293 rooms include eight villas with private pools, 64 suites and six panoramic suites offering floor-to-ceiling glass walls which open up to take advantage of the far-reaching sea views. Guests can enjoy relaxing on their extended patios or huge balconies (depending on which floor your room is on), overlooking the pristine beach and serene waters. An Ocean Deluxe Room is our accommodation for two nights and we couldn’t be more in awe. The room is a super generous size, designed with a meticulous beach-vibes approach where space has been used practically and stylishly. Neautral creams and beiges are punctuated with bold cushions and elevated with thoughtful artwork. These lovely rooms feature a large bedroom with a huge king bed and sliding doors that lead out onto a balcony that offers fabulous views out to sea. We spend a considerable amount of time lounging on the comfy round relaxation bed here with a cup of coffee in hand. Featuring sweeping views of the Arabian Gulf, this

room type offers a sense of comfort and understated luxury. The storage is plenty and designed in a way that is accessible but not intrusive to your space. A lush seating area catches our attention as considerate welcome amenities including chocolates, sparkling date juice and a welcome note all greet us upon entering. The en-suite bathroom is one of those that you would dream of having in your own home; elegantly kitted out with a deepsoaking bathtub, a separate shower and great luxury amenities. The double vanity is ideal for couples and friends who need their own space for makeup or grooming. This is definitely in our top five rooms to experience in Abu Dhabi – everything just flows naturally and we could have easily spent an entire week hiding out here. On top of this, the capsule tea and coffee making facilities are of premium standard, whilst every other in-room amenity means that you literally have everything that you could need at the convenience of your fingertips. RELAXATION REFINED Just when we thought we’d experienced it all, we venture to the beachfront of Jumeirah at Saadiyat Island Resort. It’s a beautiful breezy day and we’re equipped with our very own complimentary Jumeirah beach bags filled with all the essentials. DARE TO LEAP In a time where the mobile phone market has become saturated with the latest tech and features, Realme is bringing more innovation and stylish design to the Middle East market. Created to deliver outstanding performance in a sleek package, Realme is stepping up its game with its latest offering – the 5 Pro – and FACT took a closer look.

M

aking a giant gadget leap in performance, Realme’s penchant for quality on a budget has made the 5 Pro the default choice in the value segment for smartphones. It’s easy to see that Realme is perfectly targeted towards the trendsetters of now – young people with an interest in breaking boundaries and those who want to enjoy the happy life brought by the beauty of technology – at an affordable price. Insisting in the philosophy of real design, Realme doesn’t compromise on aesthetic taste. With a motto of “Dare To Leap” – the Realme 5 Pro boasts a whole lot of firsts for the brand, the Full Speed Flagship phone comes equipped with a big 6.3-inch LCD screen on the front, claiming a 90.6 screen-to-body ratio. The pre-applied screen guard is also great for protection. Though the phone appears glossy – it is not slippery. We have a good grip on the phone and scrolling is as faster and smoother than ever, letting us enjoy a higher refresh rate. Even the 8.9mm thickness doesn’t pose any issues. One of the phone’s biggest unique selling points is its four rear cameras. When using the phone outdoors and at night, you’ll see that the screen can get quite bright. Photos are sharp and vibrant – especially as you get separate controls for HDR, Filters, and Chroma Boost, whilst video content is also decent and “social media worthy”. The Realme 5 Pro’s support of Widevine L1 DRM for high-res video streaming is another bonus for those who spend a lot of time watching content on their phone. The 48-megapixel Sony IMX586 sensor has an f/1.79 aperture and

supports PDAF, which is usually found in more expensive phones. This is next to an 8-megapixel wide-angle camera with an f/2.25 aperture, a 2-megapixel macro camera, and a 2-megapixel depth sensor. The front camera has a 16-megapixel sensor and f/2 aperture. It might take a few attempts to master the perfect selfie but once you’ve got the hang of it – prepare for Insta-ready pics, every single day. There’s also a fingerprint sensor on the rear, rather than embedded into the screen like other smartphones. Fingerprints and face recognition can be used to unlock not only the phone but also individual apps and a Private Safe which lets you store documents and photos away from prying eyes. For a phone in this price range, that’s a pretty nifty feature that we appreciate. Battery life is more than good for a phone in this segment. You’ll likely get a full day on single charge whilst using it for daily tasks like whatsapp messages, insta stories, internet browsing, and video streaming. Charging time is also reasonable, with the phone managing to reach up to 80 per cent in just over half an hour. For general day-to-day usage and multitasking between apps, the Realme 5 Pro is a true ally for users. For a low-cost device it looks and feels incredibly premium. The geometric pattern and metallic sheen achieve a lovely smooth finish. Crystal Green and Sparkling Blue add a distinct jewel-toned appearance that wouldn’t look out of place in any millennial’s hand. ✤ GO: VISIT WWW.REALME.COM FOR MORE INFORMATION. fact magazine

THE REIMAGINED CROSSOVER: ALL-NEW 2019 CHEVROLET BLAZER

n a segment dominated by big motoring names such as Ford, Jaguar, Toyota, Nissan, and BMW, the mid-size SUV has become the automotive equivalent of a tiny house. For families who plan to haul around five people – plus maybe a few suitcases – on a regularity, choosing the ideal crossover is a decision not to be made lightly. We’re here to tell you all about the 2019 Chevrolet Blazer and why it should make the cut. We’re helmed with the keys to a sleek and luscious red crossover that bares the iconic nameplate of the Blazer. This tale dates back to 1969. The first generation of the Blazer launched to rival the likes of the Ford Bronco and Jeep Cherokee with a sturdy frame of the pickup truck and the agility of a two-door sports machine – the result was the K5 Blazer - a four-wheel drive which included three different engines to choose from. What made it extra special? The first-gen Blazers also came from the factory without a roof and quickly proved to be a giant success with motorists. In 1973, the second-generation Blazer hit the scene, bolder and better than ever. It was 18 years later in 1991 when we got word of the third dose of a new Blazer hitting the streets. The S-10 Blazer arrived in 1992, trimming down in comparison to its bigger siblings but sticking to its off-road roots. A few years later, the full-size Blazer evolved into the Tahoe and in the early 00's, the line became widelyknown as Trailblazer after a special edition package, marking the nameplate’s off-road heritage, proved hugely popular with drivers. Having spawned various models that are now well and truly classics, the legendary Blazer makes a reimagined comeback 62

for modern times – and we are here for it! Attitude is what we see and feel in the 2019 Chevy Blazer. With a massive focus on design, the makers of this vehicle have not done things by halves. The car is bold and striking, standing its ground and turning heads whenever we pull up to any valet in the city. Style credentials are important here – and borrowed from some of the brand’s performance classics such as the famous Camaro – because this model is the foremost representation of the brand’s new design language – one that truly catapults the Blazer into the 21st century and a whole new decade. Imposing and finished in a honeycomb pattern, the front grille is punctuated by sleek headlights that feature menacing LED design details. The aggressive front end is complemented by a toned body, which features strong lines including a prominent character line that runs along the side of the vehicle and swoops up at the rear to merge with a stylish roof spoiler. The wheel arches are pronounced and house 18-inch standard alloy wheels on base model and 20-inch on all other trims with available 21inch designs on Premier and RS models. Chevrolet have taken their time with this one and the optional features are excellent. The all-new 2019 Blazer also offers unrivalled utility through five-passenger seating with up to 1,818 Litre of max cargo space with second-row seats folded flat. The adjustable sliding rear seats enhance practicality further along with a Chevroletfirst cargo management system including a rail system and cargo fence. For friends going on road trips or anyone who’s into mall sprees, you can basically lug around bulky luggage and shopping, comfortably. That’s something we can definitely appreciate living in the UAE and planning weekends away.

Furthermore, Traction Select comes standard on all model variants and allows the driver to make real-time adjustments to the vehicle’s driving mode to account for varying road conditions – something that is a definite advantage, especially in the current climate where stormy weather and heavy rains pose obstacles on the roads. On AWD models, it also allows the system to be completely disconnected from the rear axle, meaning drivers can opt to have their vehicle operate in FWD when AWD capability is not necessary. RS and Premier models offer a more sophisticated twin-clutch AWD technology that helps optimise traction for every condition. It provides excellent performance in wet conditions, while also providing enhanced stability in dry weather. It’s hard to fault the all-new 2019 Chevrolet Blazer. Fans of the classics may have a hard time adjusting to the braver and more sophisticated design – but in its most refined form, the vehicle’s presence is hard to ignore. Chevrolet has flawlessly teamed style, technology and performance with great attention to detail, and still allowing for versatility and optional customisation. It took just one drive to win us over, and we’re confident that every modernday crossover connoisseur will feel the same way after taking a seat in the impressive 2019 Chevrolet Blazer. ✤

REAL TALK: LES BENJAMINS SS20 Taking inspiration from feminine sophistication and urban staples, Les Benjamins is unveiling a new collection for the Spring/Summer 2020 season, one that is thoroughly rooted in the brand’s commitment to design real garments made for real people.

• FASHION FOCUS

This season, Les Benjamins explore new interpretations of ease and luxury through a cycling-wear influenced ready-to-wear collection. Inspired by The 4 Rivers Path, Korea’s most popular cross country bicycle trail from Seoul to Busan, the new collection offers a curated selection of easy-to- wear silhouettes complemented with timeless evening-wear pieces. In this context, the freedom of movement, and the abolishment of any physical restraints are primordial. The Spring/Summer 2020 collection, therefore, introduces dynamic styles that are emphasized by color-blocking styles and graphic mixed media prints. Silhouettes emphasise the theme and balance the contemporary spirit of Les Benjamins – one of arts, craftsmanship, and street-culture – rendering it as relevant as ever. The distinctive outfits incorporate casual and engineered looks directly drawn from cycling-wear. Each piece is thereby cut in a range of premium and hi-tech fabrics and enriched with a multitude of cycling details such as utilitarian pockets and protective coatings. Minimalist, active tailoring blends cycling elements into the brand’s archetypal urban styles. Fits suggest ease, first and foremost: cropped cycling tops and jackets, as well as form-fitting cycling shorts and high-waisted flared track-pants ensure absolute comfort and style. This season’s leading print, the Carpet Design jacquard, for its part, embellishes the surface of a variety of key pieces, such as maxi dresses, cropped jackets and asymmetric skirts. In addition, sequined racing tops and asymmetric styles add a sophisticated edge to the collection. The palette, for its part, is both tropical and urban: colorways of sundowner pink, sky blue, and fresh mint are celebrating the feeling of summer and put in stark contrast to urban shades, such as light grey, off-white and black. 68

AMAL SHINE With the award-winning and leading voice of fashion and lifestyle in the UAE capital, Amal Salameh RELAXING SPA DATE: IRIDIUM SPA AT THE ST. REGIS SAADIYAT ISLAND RESORT Let’s rewind to one lazy Saturday afternoon where me and the hubby head to the serene St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort for a couple’s massage appointment at the tranquil Iridium Spa. But first, let us start with some fun facts: Iridium literally translates to Rainbows. The word Iridium comes from the Greek mythological goddess Iris, and when she transcends sea and sky as a messenger, she manifests herself as a rainbow. Today, Iridium is one of the most precious and rare elements on earth and is part of The St. Regis DNA in providing guests with an exceptional spa experience which I am happy to report is very true to the luxe claims that the spa promises. In both ambience and quality, this place thrives. If you are wondering how to spend the upcoming love-filled occasion, this place is the perfect pampering spot for you and your partner on Valentine’s Day since it calls for an escape to calmer shores away from the city. While there are plenty of treatments on offer, we booked the Sense of Calm massage in the VIP couple’s room complete with a changing room and private jacuzzi catering to every need to leave you feeling completely rejuvenated from head to toe. Now, on to the treatment, you can choose 60 or 90 minutes of deep and soothing therapy targeted for weary bodies and racing minds to aid with relaxation and sleep. Here’s what to expect - a holistic experience based on the application of carefully-blended essential oils and the use of pressure point massage techniques to promote physical and spiritual well-being. After the treatment is done, some ginger tea, 15-minute jacuzzi time (and more ginger tea) in the relaxation room make the finishing touches to the experience exceptional. You are most likely going to forget the stresses of everyday life and leave the spa renewed enough to brave the big city again.

Yours fashionably, Amal 74

T

here’s a lot to be said about a restaurant that carries such a success story as Fishmarket. The legendary eatery has been around for so long that parents of teenagers have their own tales of visiting the venue back in their hay day. It’s the warmth and welcome of this place that has many loyal customers feeling like they are a part of a special foodie family. Staying true to the essence of its flagship status and bringing a new lease of life to its surroundings, Fishmarket is officially open again with a much-anticipated facelift. Make your way down a neon-lit walkway, which sets the tone for what’s to come. Upon entering the restaurant, you’ll instantly notice all the added maritime details; fish nets above the food stations, wood panels and thatch work reminiscent of ships from a time gone by, and sturdy ropes holding tall bamboo branches together, forming strong pillars around the spherical venue. The upholstery and finishings tie in aqua blues and subtle nautical-inspired tableware. Everything falls perfectly in place – calming, coherent design that makes us feel very comfortable in our cushy seats. We opt to sit on the verge of where indoors crosses over onto outdoors. From our table, it’s possible to admire the views of Abu Dhabi’s skyscrapers, the serene marina and at the same time witness the chefs cooking up a storm in the kitchens, just behind the vivacious displays of different ingredients. Fishmarket presents an entirely interactive experience. The restaurant boasts nothing short of a mini fish market itself. Laid on a bed of ice, you’ll find one of the largest varieties of seafood 84

that we’ve ever come face to face with outside of an actual supermarket. In fact, this may well give some supermarket set ups a run for their money too. We’re talking Canadian Lobster, Jumbo Shrimp, Tiger Prawns, King Fish, Tuna, Salmon, Scallop, Baby Squid, Clams, Jumbo Oysters, Local Crab, Mussels, Sea Bass, Sultan Ibrahim, Red Mullet, Silver Pomfret, Gulf Sole and that only covers half of the fresh catch counters. The idea is to start with a basket – similar to that which you get in many European grocery stores – which is lined with paper. Choose your desired crustacean and/or fish and place it in your basket. Up on a board, you’ll see cooking methods and condiments; pass your basket to a nearby server and let them know how you’d like your ingredients cooked – fried, baked, grilled, steamed or seared, followed by the sauce in which you want it cooked (the chilli and lime is the stuff of tangy dreams). Next up, a huge array of colour will make you double take. This is the table of greens, oranges, reds, purples and every shade under the rainbow. Bok choy, chillies, carrot, tomato, sweetcorn, asparagus, cauliflower, broccoli, onion, four types of mushroom, every kind of capsicum, and a whole lot more. Dive in! Pick up every ingredient that you would like to accompany your meal and, once more, a cooking method (stir fried is a good way to go) and your choice of sauce – we went for the oyster sauce and the soy sauce for different vegetables. That’s not all though; you can even have your veggies cooked tempura-style which is an excellent offering for those who may want these goods to be the stars of their dinner. Here, you can also choose from a list of rice and noodles to come

as a side with your main. There’s a fabulous range of appetisers including hummous, fattoush, baba ghanoush, tabbouleh and various crisp salads too. Is there anything they haven’t thought of? Traditionally, food at Fishmarket is cooked Thai style and, lo and behold, when our scallops, calamari and baby squid came cooked in a delicious lemon garlic sauce, the velvety texture and zesty flavours took us right back to the hawker stalls of Bangkok. Juicy jumbo shrimp is bathed in a spicier but delicate red curry sauce whilst the grilled sea bass with a side of vegetable fried rice and crunchy greens is pure joy. The noodles are a real treat, especially for those at the table who don’t usually gravitate towards this doughy indulgence. If by any chance you’re trying to rid a cold or sinus issues, the signature Tom Yum Soup is a bowl of tasty goodness that will open up your airways and any cumbersome blockages. Brilliant! It is evident why Fishmarket is so revered in Abu Dhabi; its strong reputation is a result of consistency. Fresh food, variety of ingredients, quality of cooking and flavour-packed taste – all alongside the most attentive service – this place is a true testament to what can be achieved when a concept is kept simple and authentic with a few refreshing updates to maintain a sense of excitement for diners to return time and again. ✤

SAVOUR THE SILK ROAD When it comes to all-day dining restaurants in luxury hotels, we often think of rigid surroundings and lacklustre vibes – a venue that’s been designed solely to serve mass food to patrons. ahha is a restaurant designed to depict an adventurous Eastern marketplace of authentic home country cuisine. We arrive at the venue for dinner to find a large space that has all the makings of a pleasant all-day dining restaurant; a range of seating options, indoors and outdoors, large windows looking out onto a lovely view, tall columns that add a regal touch to the setting and, most of all, the smell of fresh food floating in the air and guiding us towards a wellorganised and lively buffet/live cooking area. On first impressions, it’s the staff at Sahha that stand out. Warm, welcoming and well-versed in the culinary experience. Offering up an ambitious – and unique – concept, Sahha draws on authentic inspiration and home cooking representations with all dishes prepared by Chefs staying true to their heritage and roots. A celebration of harmonious living across nationalities, regional social and cultural diversity, bequeathed by the UAE Founding Fathers, the restaurant showcases rich flavours of the silk route. Freshly prepared, to individual guest tastes, Turkish, Moroccan, Thai, Indian, Lebanese, Indonesian and Malaysian foods are served from an extensive buffet and interactive open kitchen. We head straight for the salad station and the Arabic cold mezze. Standouts include the various cauliflower concoctions and a very tasty prawn and artichoke salad. You’ll find everything from sweet potato to roast pumpkin, crisp greens like lettuce, broccoli, spinach and more fresh vegetables to mix up your own choice of ingredients for a healthy start to the meal. We also stack up on muhammara which we scoop up in small pieces of bread – delicious. As we dive into an unparalleled gastronomic affair that masterfully blends an array of tastes, both loyal to authentic culture and re-imagined must-try twists – we walk towards the Indian corner. Here, a bowl full of hot dal tadka is just the winter warmer that we’ve been calling out for – hot, flavourful and cooked with love – we devour it like a soup in minutes. The made-to-order chicken tikka drizzled in chutney will surely please all the poultry fans who visit Sahha, however, it was the lamb biryani with a side of raita and poppadum that impressed us. We quickly realised the quality of the food at Sahha is what makes it stand out from other all-day dining restaurants in the city. The broccoli and potato gratin was another dish that took us by surprise; simple yet SO filling. Another memorable main was the mango fish curry – zesty and succulent, with a side of rice it was just the perfect combination to satisfy our cravings. We would visit again for this alone! Towards the Thai section, there was everything from prawn crackers to noodles, fried fish and curries galore. Word of advice: pace yourself – the last thing you want to feel here is food FOMO! There’s an extensive meat selection too with roast beef and more waiting to be sliced and put on your plate by the talented chefs in the kitchen. Though we quickly developed favourites, we were told that every visit to Sahha allows guests to discover something new as selections vary daily, depending on Chef profiles and seasonal ingredients. Even better! 88

Dessert is a whole different game. A large table is adorned with every fruit you can think of; watermelon, strawberry, bananas, grapes, pomegranate, and even the Malaysian mangosteen – which is juicy on every bite. For a more indulgent ending to the meal, we also opt for the crème brûlée and a variety of different flavoured cakes which are washed down with a side of green tea (balance is key). The name, ‘Sahha’ in Arabic means health and is reflected through the concept here. Traditional nutritious considerations and seasonal ingredients from territories covering The Silk Route are celebrated in a range of dishes to please all ages and palates. We’d highly recommend visiting with the whole family for a dinner that will leave you surprised and happily full. ✤

FOR THE LOVE OF FOOD Hakkasan Abu Dhabi at the magnificent Emirates Palace is often hailed as one of the most romantic restaurants in the city and guarantees to impress diners time and again thanks to a winning combination of service, food and atmosphere. ven on repeat visits to this finedining Cantonese spot we can’t help but be astounded. From the Palace, guests enter into a bustling dining room of electric blue hues, ornate wooden screens and glass-fronted show kitchen that is always buzzing with activity (pay attention and you may see your dim sum being prepared from scratch). Entering from the private elevator you arrive on the terrace, perched high upon the Palace walls the views over the gardens and across the cityscape provide one of the best vantage points in the city. The terrace with its illuminated pathways, spacious cabanas and separate bar is perfect for dining al fresco or for mixed drinks pre or post-dinner. Dining at Hakkasan often feels like eating within an upmarket nightclub, thanks to the modish lighting and amped-up soundtrack but with a well-stocked bar. A well-configured dining room means that privacy is easy to find for the upmarket clientele, pockets of darkness abound throughout the space and provides a sense of intimacy and seclusion that is so often difficult to find. Hakkasan works well for a romantic evening, a business meeting or a place to enjoy with friends, thanks to the combination of bar, lounge, restaurant and terrace. The result is a space for any occasion which adds to the appeal of a venue renowned for its exceptional food offering. While the menu prices vary greatly from the AED2,288 Japanese abalone clay pot with baby sea cucumber or the AED1,998 signature Peking duck with Beluga caviar. Diners should not be deterred by price point and value for money can easily be found. For groups of two or more, we would suggest either the dragon signature menu or taste of Hakkasan, both of which offer set menus that provide guests with the opportunity to sample a number of the restaurants signature dishes. On this occasion, we opt for the taste of Hakkasan menu available form 7pm to 8pm daily and priced at a very reasonable AED298 per person excluding beverages. The menu begins with a viscous hot and sour soup that boasts an unexpected depth of flavour and is laden with small pieces of tender chicken. As the name suggests there is a nice level of heat that comes through and the dish is comforting on the current chilly nights. Two ‘small bites’ are next to arrive and include the popular Hakka steamed dim sum platter comprising of a trio of picture-perfect steamed parcels. The abalone and chicken shui mai make for an interesting flavour profile, while the lighter sea bass transpires to be our favourite and it’s these luxurious ingredients supporting each other without the need for intervention that makes

dining at Hakkasan such a pleasure. The sweetcorn dumpling, however, is a little bland and unmemorable. Peking duck has become the signature dish at Hakkasan and is consistently excellent to the point that we cannot dine at Hakkasan without ordering it! Crisp skin and succulent meat combined with scallion and cucumber smothered in plum sauce and rolled within delicate pancakes. The dish is soon devoured and we instantly find ourselves craving more. Main courses bring stir-fry black pepper rib eye beef, crispy silver cod with XO sauce, sugar snaps with cloud ear mushrooms and ginger, and edamame

fried rice. The premium beef is generously coated in the black pepper sauce and successfully manages to enhance rather than overpower the flavours of the meat which is presented within an edible ‘nest.’ The silver cod is a delight with its crisp batter and sweet and salty sauce working together in perfect harmony. While multiple dishes are offered for the taste of Hakkasan menu, space must be saved for the dessert which is offered as a chef’s selection. We’re treated to the milk chocolate and hazelnut parfait. A rich sphere of chocolate that has the dual purpose of being both a pleasing dessert and a piece of dinner theatre, with warm chocolate sauce, poured upon the dessert to melt the exterior and reveal the hazelnut parfait within - like a giant Ferrero Rocher! Hakkasan remains the frontrunner for the best restaurant within the Emirates Palace, blending opulence with the distinct Asian ambience of a Chinese tea house while replicating the trendy design of the Michelinstarred London flagship in the process. With excellent service levels, a pleasing beverage list (don’t miss the Hakka) and arguably the best Cantonese food in the capital, Hakkasan Abu Dhabi should be on your list of dining destinations for 2020. ✤

• SPA & WELLNESS

ENRICH YOUR SOUL There is something rather tranquil about a wellness space draped in white interiors and neutral décor. Where natural day light and other well-considered lighting elements create an ethereal vibe; this is the entire mood at The EDITION Spa. FACT’s Shabana Adam takes a mid-week break and books into the award-winning wellness venue at The Abu Dhabi EDITION…

W

alking into the tranquil EDITION Spa, I’m greeted by the warmest smiles and friendly staff. Their tone is welcoming and calm, immediately putting me into a peaceful mind frame. The EDITION Spa feels balanced; each area has an inviting flow. In fact, my first treatment is in the salon and what I really love about this place is that, unlike many other hotels, the hair salon is located within the sprawling spa, adjacent to the relaxation lounge. You know what this means right? You don’t have to traipse through the hotel and pass people in between getting a hair treatment and a massage – it’s the small things, after all! My afternoon of pampering begins with a Detoxifying Exfoliant for the Scalp and Hair. Allistair is the hair artist and maestro who guides me through this muchneeded process. Firstly, getting to grips with my locks, we have a very honest chat about my lacklustre tresses. My hair just doesn’t retain that same lively bounce that it once did. My scalp is often dry, hot, itchy – no doubt a result of the coarse winter weather and a lack of attention – on my part. Allistair reassures me that this isn’t uncommon. Harsh desert environments and uninformed haircare choices can lead to breakage and dullness, but his mission on this day was to relieve my scalp irritation and restore some volume and shine back into my hair. Of course, Allistair has some great tips along the way on how to maintain the salon feeling at home. How often to shampoo, techniques on conditioning and general methods for upkeep – I make a vivid mental note of each, vowing to implement these small changes into may haircare routine. Allistair meticulously explains the treatment process to me and goes through the products he will use. It’s important to bear in mind that every client is different. When you book this specific treatment, based on your thorough consultation, Allistair will determine the right products for your unique requirements. For me, it was simple. Naturaltech’s Renewing Shampoo is used to wash the hair. It offers an invigorating effect that soothes and moisturises the scalp, encouraging healthy hair growth, regulating metabolism and balancing scalp condition. This is followed by an application of the Detoxifying Scrub Shampoo, which helps to tackle my second problem of weak roots and breakage. This product helps to eliminate frizz and promote a softer texture as well as helping to protect your hair from future environmental damages. The trick now was to leave the latter shampoo in my hair for maximum effect and head for the next part of my wellness escape; a 60-minute Pinda Sweda Herbal Poultice Massage. Every treatment at The EDITION Spa begins with a chakra balancing ritual. I am guided to step into a large golden Tibetan singing bowl and close my eyes. My therapist Rakesh then uses a smaller bowl and gong to create harmonising sound and vibrations around the body. There are many benefits to this ritual; reducing stress and anxiety, promoting deep relaxation, aiding the immune system, improving circulation and blood flow and, as in this case, an opportunity to balance the chakras and help me get in the zone. Talk about unique touches – The EDITION Spa has thought of it all. We then make our way to the serene en-suite treatment room. As if this place couldn’t get things more perfect, the treatment suite is a haven in which you’ll want someone to leave you and throw away the key (on purpose) for a little while at least. I change into a comfy robe and before the massage begins, Rakesh explains

that the herbal poultice is a warm compress filled with numerous herbs, steamed and applied directly to the body with a variety of specialised techniques. The heat, combined with the herbs are absorbed by the body and help to reduce aches and pains, increase lymphatic drainage and condition the skin. Used in some Asian and Far East cultures as a deep heat medicinal treatment, the body absorbs the heat and what makes the treatment so effective is that it affords the flexibility to be better tailored to specific joints and areas that need attention. Here, the technique is of the therapeutic ayurvedic massage and the herbal bags are dipped in herbal oil too. The therapist places the bags on various joints, muscles, tendons, ligaments and soft tissues for an intense relief of discomfort and pain. For me, it was the upper shoulders and neck that needed loosening – especially as most of my time is spent slouched over a computer screen. Rakesh is incredibly professional and well-versed in this treatment. His technique is what I can only describe as gentle vigour, with diverse strokes and kneading with the herbal bags to tackle different areas of the body. I find myself fall into a sweet slumber half way through – it helps that the beds are also heated. I wake up feeling completely rejuvenated and lighter. But, more importantly, I have a sense of inner calm that has been missing for a while. A cup of hot ginger tea is prepped and waiting to be sipped back at the salon. Allistair proceeds to wash the Detoxifying Scrub Shampoo out of my hair and uses Naturaltech’s Vegetarian Miracle Conditioner on the ends of my hair. This hydrating conditioner is perfect for fragile and dehydrated hair. Enriched with rice proteins to instantly strengthen and restore moisture to the hair and scalp. On damp, towel dried hair, Allistair then applies a tingling Energising Gel and massages it into the scalp and hair, followed by a beautiful, bouncy blow dry. My hair is smoother, sleeker and glossier than it has been for as long as I can remember. What makes this entire experience all the more personable is Allistair himself. A true hair enthusiast, he is a natural with tons of passion. Through great conversation, we soon discover that we share the same birthday and now everything makes sense… it’s that one-of-a-kind Gemini energy (no bias, promise!). The EDITION Spa prides itself on embracing the generous spirit of Abu Dhabi, where hospitality lies at the heart of its culture. Where tradition meets innovation and settings and experiences carefully combine warmth and personal comfort with a distinctly modern sensibility. This couldn’t be truer. A place where every sense is awakened with customised treatments featuring bespoke scent, sound, touch and premium products, I can’t recommend a visit here enough! ✤

What are some of your favourite cultural hotspots in Abu Dhabi and why? Abu Dhabi is a vibrant city bursting with culture and heritage. For a cultural morning, I recommend visiting Louvre Abu Dhabi that gleams with stunning architecture and provides direct access to first-class art and an interesting insight into cultural diversity. As the sun sets, I advocate a stopover at the iconic Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. Featuring marvellous interior design, it never fails to astonish visitors. Interestingly, our hotel was heavily influenced by the mosque and guests may notice that the acanthus flowers that decorate the mosque’s interiors adorn as well our resort’s own marble design. For unsurpassed views of the mosque, visit our property, particularly during the evening hours when the mosque illuminates beautifully as an icon over the sky.
