In many Islamic states, the time on the roads before breaking the daily fast is known as Ramadan Rush Hour!

Meaning ‘Fragrant Harbour’, Hong Kong has more Rolls Royce’s per person than any other city in the world!

According to WOW.Travel, by 2030 Abu Dhabi will have heavy and light railroads and unbeatable public transport.

DESTINATION ART What’s it about?

Abu Dhabi Art hub is an artist’s dream, a space for emerging and established artists from across the world. It’s a platform for interaction and cross-cultural artistic exchanges between national, regional and international artists. FACT’s Pallavi Ramesh takes a sneak peek into this unique arts paradise…

Abu Dhabi Art Hub lives up to its motto; ‘Live, Create, Exhibit!’ It’s where artists are given the space to create and display their work, on a local, regional and international platform. With the benefit of space, artists across the globe participate in residency programmes of two weeks to a month, which concludes with a public exhibition. In addition to residency programmes for foreign artists, through Friends of Art Hub and Adopt-an-Artist sponsorships, emerging Emirati artists are eligible to participate in residency programmes overseas. Innovative and cool, the art hub has fast become the pulse of Abu Dhabi’s creative scene. It’s the first live community in the UAE, dedicated exclusively to artists, providing state-ofthe-art facilities, thus making it a hive for artists to meet and interact with each other and those who appreciate art.

Art Hub: Facilities

The venue offers a laid-back and eclectic atmosphere to inspire and encourage creative spirits. The quiet surroundings of the location, and the resources provided by Abu Dhabi Art Hub, have the power to make artists truly fall in love with the place. The rooms in-house are fully furnished; each includes a partitioned work area providing ample space to create. There are Workshop facilities for art talks, presentations and lectures. Multiple galleries allow convenient exhibition opportunities and the large main hall is used for events and exhibits. Art hub provides dedicated parking space, and food lovers can relish the delicious menu at the Art Hub Café. Offices and studios are available on lease at affordable prices on a monthly or yearly basis. There are also many cool services that include custom framing, art supplies and books, and a rooftop Arabic tent and barbecue area. So, even visitors are guaranteed a memorable time!

Art Hub: Events

Engaging the art community at-large, Abu Dhabi Art Hub has an aggressive schedule of art related activities, events and creative projects lined up. Other than the residency programmes, workshops and exhibitions, Art Hub has a host of activities. The ‘Art by Country’ is a month long residency programme featuring artists and work of a particular nation, for example, June was Ireland Art Month and this month Art Hub is celebrating with pieces from the Philippines. Art hub also offers classes by experts in-house; which include drawing, painting, sculpturing, origami and graffiti. As part of its social

CHECK IT OUT

Fact Finds Discover more of Abu Dhabi with FACT Finds. Every month we’ll bring you a new hotspot, our favourite happening, eatery, activity or interesting find from around the city.

Hubbly Bubbly at Holiday Inn The Fifa World Cup has certainly sent the world into a sporting whirl, and Abu Dhabi is no exception. With that said, when looking for where to go, to catch the games, eat good food, and enjoy a lively atmosphere, we were spoilt for choice. That is until someone mentioned Hubbly Bubbly at Holiday Inn Abu Dhabi. It’s a warm and welcoming makeshift tent put up for the World Cup and Ramadan season that continuously attracts both the local community and the city’s expats. The tent is a large space with a casual ambience; velvet drapes hang on the sides and ceiling, comfy sofas are scattered around and the sweet smell of shisha fills the air. The atmosphere is a buzz with groups of friends chatting away and watching the World Cup on two big screens – a real social hangout, now we get why Hubbly Bubbly is full with people every evening! 10. fact magazine

The Arabic-theme leads into the simple yet fun menu and top of our list to try is the World Cup-inspired ‘Sepp Blatter Platter’. It’s a humongous (no exaggeration, it’s HUGE!) plate of carefully crafted burgers all joined together and each representing a different nation of the World Cup. The idea for the 12 tear and share sliders, with a mountain of skinny fries in the middle, is the brainchild of Holiday Inn’s resident food maestro, Chef Carl. He tells us that this was a culinary creation to depict the fun and buzz of the World Cup, and boy, it’s just that! We particulary loved the Australian Fried Egg slider; the French Cheese and onion; the Russian Beetroot; the English Mushroom and Cheese; and the Brazilian Corn Salsa slider. And that abundance of skinny fries was a fast food frenzy like no other. This could only be described as the food of champions!

GO: Visit Hubbly Bubbly at the Holiday Inn Abu Dhabi. Call +971 2657 4888 for more information.

Aside from the platter we also tucked into various Arabic appetisers, as well as the Arabic mixed seafood platter. All ingredients were fresh and cooked to yummy perfection. Chef Carl, who has been based in Abu Dhabi for five years, , has, along with his young team, truly taken the spirit of the World Cup and the appetite of Arabic culture, to produce a menu that keeps regulars returning and newcomers bragging!

GIFT OF GIVING

Lend a Helping Hand One of the most important aspects of Ramadan is to give alms to the less fortunate. Make a difference this Holy Month (and in the future) by supporting the various UAE charities who are helping to make a difference, and experience the joy of giving… Emirates Red Crescent campaign

Boxes have been placed by the Emirates Red Crescent (ERC) outside all UAE mosques with the aim to collect donations for the needy. People are welcome to donate all kinds of clothing, shoes and other durable items. In addition to this, ERC will provide Iftar meals to needy families across 123 locations in the UAE. In collaboration with the Abu Dhabi Cooperative Society, 50,000 packages of essential commodities will also be distributed. Items include rice, sugar, cooking oil, flour and drinks. Visit www.rcuae.ae for more information.

The Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Foundation The Khalifa Foundation in coordination with Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority (ADFCA) and health department (to ensure complete food safety) is providing

1.8 million Iftar meals, distributed throughout Ramadan in 110 regions across the country. The Iftar meals are prepared by more than 600 women. On its seventh year, the foundation aims to help underprivileged families and urges the government and corporate bodies to employ ladies to prepare meals for Iftar initiatives. Visit www.khalifafoundation.ae for more information.

Dubai Charity Association

The Dubai Charity Association launched its Ramadan charity campaign under which 15,000 food baskets worth AED2 million will be distributed to the needy families in the country. The campaign ‘Ramadan Al Khair’ which means welfare, includes distribution of Ramadan ration, Iftar meals, Zakat Al Fitr, Zakat in money and Eid gifts, which will be distributed among orphans and needy people. The

Iftar programme will be conducted in 25 mosques in the country, distributing 100,000 meals and 800 mosques across African, Asian and European countries will receive Iftar meals. Visit www.dubaicharity.org.ae for more information.

UAE WATERAID CAMPAIGN

A nationwide campaign to give more than five million people worldwide access to fresh drinking water was launched by His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. Coinciding with Ramadan, Emirates Red Crescent will implement the project in areas severely in need of water so people can have their own wells, water pumps, and water purification equipment. Companies across the Emirates have supported this campaign and the donations are pouring in for the national cause.

The choices are many; all you need to do is make your’s the right one! For a list of charity organisations in the UAE visit www.indexuae.com 12.

Getting there Cathay Pacific runs daily flights to Hong Kong from Dubai, which will get you there under 11 hours with no transfers. We had the pleasure of flying Cathay’s Business Class, which is certainly well worth the experience. Within minutes of boarding, all of the flight attendants had your name memorised and we were given a variety of useful amenities, from socks to a travel hygiene kit. The three-course meal was fresh and delectable. However, the real highlight of the journey was when the lights went out after dinner and you could snuggle into your flatbed seat and take a nap. Given that the flight to Hong Kong is an overnight flight, having a seat that reclined into a very comfortable flatbed allowed us to sleep soundly, and wake up in Hong Kong fresh as a daisy, and ready to start exploring. This definitely was a priceless advantage, if there ever was one.

Not that we spent much time in the room (what with our hectic social diary), but the efficient service provided by the hotel was more than adequate and made for the perfect stay during our entire time there. 34. fact magazine

On the Record Pop/Rock 1000 Forms of Fear By SIA

This talented lady has been putting her pop aspirations on hold to write hooks for stars like Katy Perry, Rihanna (Sia wrote Diamonds), Britney Spears, and Beyonce too. But, by now, we’ve all heard her stunning new solo single Chandelier, and it seems that Sia has been saving her best material for herself, material that is being packaged into the 11-track 1000 Forms of Fear, which we predict could be her most rewarding and innovative listen yet.

Dance/House/Garage

New Eyes

By Clean Bandit

Not your stereotypical popstars, Clean Bandit are changing the guidelines of music. The Cambridge quartet currently holds the top spot for the UK’s fastest selling single of 2014 so far, with their chart–topping hit Rather Be (we’ve had it on loop in the office!), so you can only imagine how excited we are for their 13-track debut album New Eyes. A mix of garage beats and modern electronics, this album is packed with the group’s Mozartmeets-deep house sound. Listen out for Extraordinary with its glowing mix of claps; and the steel drums on Come Over; as well as the 90s garage sounding Heart On Fire. We love that Clean Bandit aren’t your traditional band; they’re incorporating different textures and influences of the old and the new, proving that their sound does have a place in the future of chart music.

POP

A.K.A By JLO

The diva from the bronx is back with an album she says is dedicated to her first love; music. But, we’re more interested and eager to hear what her confirmed collabos are offering up on this 14-track record. There’s T.I., Iggy Azalea, Rick Ross, Pitbull, Nas, Chris Brown and French Montana, it’s almost like a takeover album with r’nb and hip hop’s finest passing through on the mic! Some of the standout tunes include Emotions, No Worries, Acting Like That, and Same Girl.

Fully Booked fiction

The Bridges Constantine By AHLEM MOSTEGHANEMI

If poetic language, complex situations and world cultures are what peaks your interest when looking for a good read, this is a book that will tick all those boxes. What started off as a prize-winning early 90s novel and was later adapted into a television series, has now been translated onto the pages of The Bridges Of Constantine. Khaled, now an artist, once a revolutionary in the Algerian war of liberation, grieves the loss of his love, Hayat, a love affair that is, much like the politics of the country, complex and unrealistic. This novel gives a remarkable insight into Algeria’s corrupt leadership as well as a window into the true meaning of undying love, proving that Ahlem Mosteghanemi has carved a place for herself as one of the most important writers of the Arab world.

CONTEMPORARY FICTION

Gold

By CHRIS CLEAVE

Gold is so much more than a story about sport, it’s that too, but the underlying focus is on love. It addresses a dilemma that many people may face; if your dreams pull you in one direction and your heart in another, which should you follow? In Gold, this is the question that haunts Kate Meadows, a world champion athlete whose eight-yearold daughter Sophie is battling a recurrence of childhood leukaemia, just as her mother is about to take her final shot at an Olympic gold medal. This is an emotional rollercoaster of strength, willpower, the unmatched love of a mother for her child, and the intense desire to achieve one’s dreams.

Big Screen

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes Director: Matt Reeves Cast: Andy Serkis, Gary Oldman, Keri Russell, Jason Clarke What’s it about: The tables are turned as a growing nation of evolved apes, led by Caesar, is threatened by a band of human survivors of the devastating virus unleashed a decade earlier. The two sides negotiate and reach a fragile peace that proves short-lived. Both sides are brought to the brink of a war that will determine who emerges as Earth’s dominant species. Oooh intense! Why it’s worth watching? It’s been sci-fi galore this summer with some huge-name franchises releasing their new big screen offerings, from Captain America and Spiderman, to X-Men and Transformers. So, it’s no surprise that we were a little hesitant about Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (especially as the last one was pretty darn good!). However, we were pleasantly amazed! Not only is this a story about survival and trying to find a way to master one’s nature and impulse, it’s clear that here there is no villain. In Dawn we’re seeing a story of two families; the apes, and the humans, and how each has its own struggle for survival. Then, of course, the two discover each other, yet nobody is the victim here. And though there’s conflict coming, the story is less about bad guys and more about the drama of whether the apes and humans can coexist. The star performance here goes straight to Andy Serkis (Caesar), and though we miss James Franco bringing the eye candy, the great visuals and impressive plot is definitely enough to go and watch.

Tammy

Director: Ben Falcone Cast: Melissa McCarthy, Susan Sarandon, Dan Aykroyd

What’s it about: Tammy loses her job and learns that her husband has been unfaithful, and in true denial fashion, she hits the road with her profane, harddrinking grandmother. There’s no denying that Melissa McCarthy is one of Hollywood’s most hilarious actresses, and we love that this is also her husband Ben Falcone’s directorial debut. Surprisingly, it’s Susan Sarandon as the loud grandmomma that caught our attention here. We couldn’t be more excited for this film to hit the big screen – we’re due a good laugh!

Hercules

Director: Brett Ratner Cast: Dwayne Johnson, John Hurt, Ian McShane What’s it about: Hercules, the Greek demigod, has endured his legendary 12 labours and is now living his life as a sword-for-hire. Hercules is tested when the King of Thrace and his daughter seek his aid in defeating a tyrannical warlord. We don’t know about you but we were huge fans of the Hercules TV show, so the film can only mean more epic warrior scenes, right? Let’s hope so. All we want to see is Dwayne Johnson leading an army that looks similar to Daenerys Targaryen’s. Done! fact magazine

Sony Cyber-Shot DSC QX100 Digital photography has one more innovative player in the market as Sony introduces the Cyber-Shot DSC QX100, with camera meets smartphone design and functionality. Let’s talk conventions; compact cameras and smartphones are not, traditionally, two tech gadgets that double as natural companions. The first takes higher quality pictures but lacks the capability to share images instantly. The latter, though not always capturing the most inspiring photos, serves a fast-paced purpose where you can share your snaps immediately (we’re talking to you, selfie fans). And if you’re indeed a social media addict who loves to instagram your lavish lunch, or tweet a picture of your new haircut, you’ll be pleased to learn that Sony is making quite the bold attempt to give the market what is, essentially, a cross between the quality of a compact camera and the capabilities of a smartphone. The Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-QX100 (the longer zoom version of the QX10) is a sensor/lens unit, designed exclusively for use with smartphones. The unit contains a lens, sensor and processor, with your smartphone providing the user interface. Sounds intriguing, right? Yes, for amateur snappers and even those who believe their Facebook photo albums would qualify them as budding photographers, this could be the answer to all your picture taking (and sharing) needs. It’s simple; the QX100 is a high-end model based around a 20MP 1-inch sensor and

fast Zeiss-branded zoom lens, meaning you’ll get excellent image quality. The added benefit is that, even though the QX-100 is able to operate as a standalone camera, it’s actually designed to work hand-inhand with a smartphone by way of Sony’s PlayMemories Mobile app. All you have to do is establish a connection between the devices, open the app, and voila! Your mobile acts as the camera’s LCD (each unit includes a mount that clamps to the backside of a smartphone). Sharing your next [high-quality] party pic has never been so inexpertly professional. Warning! If you want the QX100 to work for you, then you really have to be the type of user who cares enough about achieving the best image quality possible. The nice photos it guarantees come at the expense of having to deal with a slow and clunky system. The entire process of setting the lens up takes at least 30 seconds from start to finish with a several second delay in the camera capturing a photo and transferring it to your phone. However, if you’re sufficiently patient to deal with speed issues, the images captured are terrifically rich in colour and offer a shallow depth of field. The QX100 is a portable solution for frequent photo snappers and sharers; it was built to produce better pics and simplify sharing, all from one device. In that case, it gets a tick in the box from us.

Ferrari California T

MOTORING

A test drive in a Ferrari is always going to be enjoyable. However, add in the spectacular Tuscan countryside, and you have an experience that is almost life-changing! FACT’S MOTORING EDITOR, TONY SIDGWICK, heads to Italy to review Ferrari’s first turbo in over twenty years…

58. fact magazine

This new ‘user-friendly ’ Ferrari Cabrio claims to offer Ferrari

excitement alongside the practicality of boot-space, a two plus two seating configuration, and the added efficiency of a turbo. Does it deliver on all fronts? Ferrari has traditionally favoured big displacement in V8 and V12 naturallyaspirated engines, because the power delivery is instant and linear, and there’s no turbo-lag. However, global shifts in demand towards cars that are more efficient have prompted Ferrari to respond with this, the California T, where the ‘T’ is for turbo. With such a big change, there’s bound to be some nervousness on the part of Ferrari, as they endeavour to win over the purists. In the pre-drive technology briefing, they went to great pains to explain the technology that made this new turbo-charged engine just as good as the V8 in the outgoing

California, if not better. They needn’t have bothered. This new engine is, to put it quite simply, a masterpiece. Turbo-lag? You’d need to have some kind of electronic device to measure it, because it’s unnoticeable to the human brain. And indeed, Ferrari did have an electronic device, which measured it (and a graph to show the results), and it proved that the power delivery is only a few milliseconds slower than the old California’s V8 thanks to the twin-scroll turbo charger.

Driving along the Tuscan countryside in a Ferrari is a whole new, mind-blowing driving experience for any motoring enthusiast.

The new V8 also produces 560hp to the old one’s 490, and 755Nm compared to 505Nm. This means that the California T will accelerate to 100km per hour in 3.6 seconds as opposed to 3.8, and on to 200km per hour in 11.2 seconds compared to 13.8. Top speed is also up by four to 316km per hour. The point is that this new engine provides more power for 15 per cent less fuel, without compromising on performance and without noticeable turbo lag, which basically makes it better than the outgoing California, whatever anyone else says! I took the California T out for a two-hour spin on my own along some of the most beautiful winding country roads I’ve ever seen, and had something of a moment to myself. I’ve simply never enjoyed a drive quite so much in my life! fact magazine .59

MOTORING

“The racy growl of that new Ferrari V8 is just as delicious as you’d expect.”

60. fact magazine

This was only partly due to the stunning Tuscan scenery. The vast majority was down to the eminent driveability of this beautiful car. I’ve never driven a car so hard and so fast along unfamiliar winding roads, whilst still feeling completely at ease and relaxed. What little oversteer I experienced was corrected with a flick of opposite lock, and understeer… well, there was none! In comfort mode, the chassis soaks up the bumps and potholes of an uneven road with finesse, but in sport mode, the California T manages to tighten everything and produce more grip, without making the ride jarring to the point of discomfort. And the ESP interferes less in Sport, allowing for a tiny bit of sideways fun. Track mode I reluctantly left alone on these unfamiliar roads, as it turns the ESP off completely, and I don’t yet trust myself enough with someone else’s Ferrari! The racy growl of that new Ferrari V8 is just as delicious as you’d expect, and the slight scream of the turbo enhances rather than taints it.

So there you have it; the Ferrari California T delivers in practically every way I can think of. It’s comfortable and luxurious, and therefore perfect for driving around town or for road trips. It’s practical, because it has four usable seats and enough boot space for shopping or luggage. Despite all this, you still get that special Ferrari excitement with the adjustable chassis and that glorious turbocharged V8 for when you want to open her up and let loose. And, it’s absolutely beautiful! What more could you ask for? Ferrari has done it again with another exciting and flashingly fast model for drivers to enjoy.

CITY RIDES

The Toyota Land Cruiser

Whilst still the undisputed King of Off-Road, especially in the Gulf and UAE, this particular monarch is beginning to look a little long in the tooth. It’s about time it had an heir come along to claim the throne…

T

he Land Cruiser isn’t just a car in the Middle East. It’s an institution; a way of life; a highly effective tool that residents of the Gulf have been choosing to tackle the wild deserts and mountains of the region for decades now. The principle reasons for this are threefold: Reliability – Toyota has long been the byword for durable and reliable cars that are also relatively cheap to maintain; Performance – the Land Cruiser is an extremely capable off-roader that will get you just about anywhere; Luxury – it

62. fact magazine

will also get you there in extremely high levels of comfort. The mid-level spec GX-R we drove boasted Toyota’s 4.6-litre 1UR-FE V8. With 304hp and 439Nm, it made light work of the various terrains we tested it on. Sand was no problem as long as you kept your speed up, but a couple of times we were forced to use the differential lock to power out of a couple of softer spots when we tried it from standstill. However, at no point were we forced to resort to manual labour to dig the Cruiser out! There’s also an ECT button, which is

L The GX-R will appeal to off-road enthusiasts more, as it takes more involvement and skill from the driver to achieve results.

basically an overdrive switch that revs the engine higher to extract more power from it, which is useful when you’re shredding up the sand dunes. The GX-R does boast leather seats, and extremely easy-to-use fold-away seats in the second and third rows, making it a very practical family carrier. There was also a cooler underneath the centre armrests that’s connected to the AC system. However, I did feel that this spec level was more conspicuous by what it didn’t have. It didn’t have the meaty 5.7-litre V8. It didn’t have the multi-terrain select, the multi-terrain monitor, the crawl control with turn assist, the flashy multi-function touchscreen infotainment system, or the kinetic dynamic suspension system. All of these features come with the VX and VX-R models, which basically makes them a wholly superior experience. Having said that, I think perhaps the GX-R will appeal to off-road enthusiasts more, as it takes more involvement and skill from the driver to achieve results, whereas all these driver assistance systems in the VX models do a lot of the work for you. The Land Cruiser is still a luxurious,

comfortable and hugely capable SUV, but in the face of increasingly aggressive competition, its number one spot isn’t looking as secure as it once was. There are rumours of a new generation of the Land Cruiser that is slated for 2016, and if they’re true, you know that Toyota are going to come out guns blazing, defending their crown in the fiercest possible way. I look forward to seeing what they come up with!

Touch of Beauty

Summer

Scents Fresh, feminine and delightfully summery, here’s our pick of the best women’s fragrances of the season

Guess Girl Summer

Nina Ricci: La Tentation de Nina

GUESS Girl Summer with its juicy citrus notes blends irresistibly with blooming floral accents. This is a floral, citrus fragrance that is uplifting and carefully crafted with freshness. It opens with the zestiness of refreshing citrus notes that unfold into the soft sweetness of Neroli petals. Feel the seductive orange blossom in the middle tones with vibrant honeysuckle, beach flower and water lily. It ends with a hint of spicy teak wood, musk and exotic vanilla orchid.

A fresh, floral and utterly addictive fragrance. The Italian bergamot envelops its citrus facets, before a zest of grapefruit rounds off an incitement of desire. Then, raspberries, almonds, lemons and Bulgarian rose join together in a surprising macaroon accord, and finally, bourbon vanilla, white musk and sandalwood round off its sensual headiness.

Roberto Cavalli: Signature Saga

Bourjois:

Parisian Chic

Fig provides an original opening to this olfactory melody before giving into a rich and dense bouquet of flowers that is given nuance and warmth by sweet and enveloping sandalwood and vanilla. The stylish packaging with the blue midnight chic bow over a monochrome background is definitely classy.

68. fact magazine

Two perfumes, two cornerstones of an imaginary edifice, the Roberto Cavalli signature series is soft and sensual, directly inspired by the feminine silhouette. Roberto Cavalli Nero Assoluto is a musky floral fragrance that blends orchid flower with the deep sensuality of black vanilla. The second is the brand’s signature scent with an addictive balsamic floral, the power of pink pepper, and the seduction of the orange blossom.

Jennifer Lopez: JLOVE

JLove is a floral, fruity scent that evokes an exotic sensation. The fragrance opens with a raspberry cocktail, pink grapefruit and juice tangerine. The heart blooms into soft, textured, floral notes of coconut orchid, luxurious and smooth sheer vanilla sorbet and finally dries down to create a luscious base bursting with a sensual sparkle.

Summer

Scents ∞

Masculine, musky and refreshing, here’s our pick of the best men’s fragrances of the season

Azzaro Pour

24: Live Another Day

Homme

This summer version of Azzaro Pour Homme is a typical South American scent. The sparkling and lively Brazil orange adds energy to illuminate the fragrance lead. Cardamom makes the top notes vibrate and a woody, smoky note lends a charismatic dimension to the creation. Finally, tonka bean gives the almond-like gustatory touch.

ScentStory, in partnership with Twentieth Century Fox Consumer Products, has two new scents. Based on Jack Bauer’s steely inner nature and his unstoppable drive; a sharp surface tension is formed by citrus, ginger and mint. A hint of geranium offers a touch of intrigue, whilst the harsh woody depths of vetiver, sandalwood and oakmoss evoke his unmatched strength.

Paco Rabanne: 1 Million $

Antonio Banderas: Cocktail Seduction

The fragrance opens with a zesty, exotic combination of Italian bergamot and cassis, suffused with a dash of “mojito”. At the heart of the fragrance is an aquatic accord of melon and a transparent floral note, with a burst of spicy cardamom. Rich base notes of cedar and rosewood are sensually poised with smooth amber and musk to evoke a fresh, modern feel.

Paco Rabanne’s 1 Million $ carries a spicy, leather scent combining top notes of grapefruit, mint and blood mandarin to create a sparkling and luminous cocktail. Rose absolute and cinnamon deliver intensity and virility at the heart. Last but not least, the final accord of blond leather, white wood, amber and patchouli makes this fragrance a sensual and irresistible blend.

Cool Water Night Dive

Faithful to its core values, masculinity and authenticity, Davidoff Cool Water Night Dive opens with a clear and thrilling splash sensation brought by a blend of mint and fruits, assembled to enhance the green inflexions of lentisk. This striking prelude slowly gives way to modern oriental notes of cashmeran. Its musky and spicy intensity is faceted with captivating ambery balm notes heightening the woody force of lentisk. fact magazine .69

Arabic Desserts for Dummies Ramadan is the perfect time to tuck into delicious Arabic sweets, but most people may not actually know what all the different tasty treats are. FACT has rounded up some of the popular choices you’re likely to find for Iftar, around the city…

Kunafa

Qatayef

Maamoul

One of our absolute faves, Kunafa is the Middle Eastern version of Cheese Danish. It’s popular across the Levant region and Turkey, and especially favoured during Ramadan. Kunafa is prepared with wheat and topped with raisins, nuts and cream, though ingredients can be substituted with other dry nuts, spices and sometimes cheese, too. Sounds delicious, right? It is!

Filled with cheese or nuts, this delicious Ramadan dessert is relished almost daily during the Holy Month, so you’re likely to find it at the sweet station at most Iftar gatherings. This delectable confection consists of a delightful fried pastry covered with sugar syrup. Ricotta Cream filling and Poached apricot is our favourite and highly recommended for first-timers. Another yummy choice!

A traditional Lebanese sweet bound with butter, orange blossom water and rose water, which on the inside is packed with a saccharine-rich filling of either buttered dates or walnuts. Topped with a delicious crumbly crust, the sticky sweet centre is complemented well. Maamoul is one Arabic dessert that we’ll be tucking into, more, this Ramadan! So, if you spot it at dessert time, like us, don’t hold back.

Baklava

Basbousa

Muhallabia

The Turkish specialty, Baklava, is layers of phyllo dough filled with honey, walnuts and pistachios, and drenched in mouthwatering syrup (always a yummy choice!). Baklava is a Ramadan essential when it comes to dessert time during the Holy Month, and, with a variety of fillings, we are certainly not complaining, as it usually leaves you craving for more.

Egyptian Basbousa is a popular dessert specialty prepared with semolina flour flavoured with coconut, rose or lemon syrup, decorated with almonds, and cut in diamond shapes. After the baking is done, each piece is soaked in the chosen syrup (we’re drooling just thinking about it!). For the health conscious, there are many lowfat recipes for Basbousa too, winner!

Widely eaten in Morocco, and one of the region’s signature milk puddings, Muhallabia is usually made with ground rice and can be flavoured with everything from chocolate, orange, and apricot, and topped with crunchy nuts. If you love a creamy and silky-smooth texture to top off your palate following Iftar, this is the perfect Arabic dessert for you.

reservations@bentleybistro.com

Bentley Bistro & Bar is raising the standards of casual dining in Abu Dhabi with its elegant menu and eclectic vibe. We’d heard nothing but praise for this venue, so, FACT went along to see if one of The Galleria’s most popular eateries lives up to the hype.

76. fact magazine

If you’ve ever visited London or New York, you’ll be familiar with the trendy, industrialesque food joints popping up around the upcoming and coolest areas of the city. For Abu Dhabi, Bentley Bistro & Bar is just that. Where urban-chic décor meets a casual and inviting atmosphere, meets gastro-pub-style hearty grub, with a touch of elegant French-inspired haute comfort. Now, how’s that for evening dinner? You’ll feel a laid-back, social vibe from the moment you step into Bentley Bistro & Bar. Intimate lighting, exposed ceiling with wood panels, blackboards dotted around (listing the daily specials), and creative lighting fixtures hanging above freestanding tables, as well as diner-style and outdoor seating, the interior really sets the tone for a friendly dining experience.

The open kitchen and lively bar provide two central points within the bright and spacious venue. On top of that, the location of Bentley Bistro & Bar on Al Maryah Island, with views over the water, adds a certain city charm and sense of exclusivity to our visit. Adding to this, the menu is nothing short of exceptional. However, as you can imagine, the food served at a Frenchinspired bistro may not be familiar to those who are used to eating out at local cafes or small bars (that’s us!). Fear not though, as we experienced, when deciding what to order, staff members are incredibly welcoming and knowledgeable, and happy to make recommendations based on what we were craving of what our taste buds usually love. We try an array of dishes, including the

Seafood Chowder, which was surprisingly light and creamy, and the fish was not overpowering, making for a tasty starter. The standout appetiser, however, was the Roasted Pumpkin Salad with a deliciously sweet dressing that complemented the spinach and goat’s cheese beautifully. Above all else, for the first round, we highly recommend the Lamb Shank Pie filled with tender pieces of lamb topped off with a soft, crispy pastry and served with tasty hand-cut chips and fresh mixed greens. You will actually feel like you’re in foodie heaven. When it comes to mains the ultimate winner for meat-lovers everywhere (and our favourite dish of the night) is the juicy RibEye Steak cooked to medium perfection and plated with creamy paris mash, truffle butter and baked crab claws. Mouthwatering is an understatement! We slowly, and happily, move onto dessert. The final round consisted of Lemon Tart; Apple Tarte Tatin with caramel sauce and vanilla ice cream; and Chocolate Crumble Tart with lime caramel sauce and Pistachio Ice Cream. All we can say is, sweet dreams are made of this. Each dessert was bursting with flavour and provided the perfect ending to a palate-pleasing meal. Presentation of food could give any 5-star kitchen a worthy contest and portion size gives value-for-money (try the Garlic and Chilli Jumbo Prawns with tomato and Okra – huge, succulent pieces await for you to tuck in!). What was evident from the menu and the food we ate is that, here, chefs are producing comfort food reimagined, with an opportunity to apply their invention and creativity to the freshest seasonal ingredients, keeping every palate satisfied and regular patrons excited about returning to Bentley Bistro & Bar. Maybe this is why we’d heard such

great things about this venue. For us, however, it was not just the food, but also the warm hospitality of the staff and sincere enjoyment of diners around us, that made the evening such a pleasant experience. Our expectations were high, our bellies hungry, and our inner foodie anxiously alive. In one final sentence: we were completely and utterly impressed.

“You’ll feel a laid-back, social vibe from the moment you step into Bentley Bistro & Bar.”

Combining authentic Arabian décor with sophisticated regal touches, The St. Regis Abu Dhabi has a landmark address on the Corniche, offering guests the ultimate escape. FACT went to find out exactly what this luxurious hotel has in store for weekend visitors…

W

ith a vibrant location in the heart of Abu Dhabi, on the picturesque Corniche, St. Regis Abu Dhabi is a fairly new hotel that we had high expectations of (especially as its sister property on Saadiyat Island has built a highly regarded reputation). The 228-room, 55-grand suite hotel boasts some exceptional dining venues and bars, with a mix of suave and stylish outlets to choose from, as well as a range of room types from sea view to suites, giving guests lots of choice for comfort. We arrived via the St. Regis chauffeur service and our first impression of the hotel, walking into the foyer with its grand staircases and dazzling chandeliers, is of pure opulence. We receive personalised check-in for a Superior Sea View King room and head straight up to the 38th floor to start our stay…

Stay: Room with a View

If spectacular views are a must on your list, then you’ll be more than happy with a stay in the Superior Sea View King room. The décor and amenities capture the bedrock of St. Regis’ promise of uncompromised living. Floor to ceiling windows display iconic sea views of the Corniche, and beyond, while contemporary Arabic décor and plush furnishings, such as the use of Statuario Royal marble, hand-tufted wool carpeting, state-ofthe-art technology and huge lavish beds, all adds an elegant ambience to the room. You’ll find all the usual amenities such as complimentary tea and coffee, bottled water, a mini bar with snacks, an iron, hairdryer and toiletries in the bathroom, along with fast internet access too. We loved the added benefit of the signature Butler Service, on call 24/7, for guests who want that extra exclusive feel! One thing you must do during your stay is order in-room breakfast. You can choose exactly what you want off the menu, from eggs cooked your way to a selection of pastries, fruit and juices. It all arrives lavishly laid out, just a hop away from the bed. There’s nothing quite like enjoying a yummy breakfast with splendid views of the Corniche!

Eat: Dine in Style

The St. Regis Abu Dhabi has endless foodie options, but one of our favourite (and innovative!) venues was Villa Toscana. It’s casual, elegant and charming, serving up delicious Italian cuisine, in a restaurant that is modelled after a noble villa in the Tuscan countryside (we especially liked the Pietra Sienna fireplace). The menu is an epicurean story of tradition, reflecting various provenances from different areas of Italy. Cooked with the season’s finest and freshest ingredients, we would recommend a pasta dish for sure, and later this year (starting October) anything with white truffles, yummy! This restaurant is an absolute must for couples, groups of friends or anyone looking for really good food who doesn’t want to venture out of the hotel. 80. fact magazine

Relax: Nation Riviera Beach Club Let’s just start off by saying that we were simply impressed with the air-conditioned private tunnel leading from the hotel’s main building, underneath the Corniche, and out on the other side of the road where the stunning Nation Riviera Beach Club stands. The beach club has a 200-metre stretch of pristine sand, overlooking the turquoise waters of the Arabian Gulf. You can while away the hours comfortably laying on one of the sunbeds or you can take part in the many water activities or health and recreational services that the beach club offers. We would, of course, recommend lounging on a cabana by the beautiful pool and making the most of the swim up bar. Take strolls on the beach or a dip in the Jacuzzi for a welcomed respite from the heat, and if you get hungry, order food and drink from Cabana Bar & Grill to add to your optimum relaxation fix.

Experience: Tea Traditions

Of all the things to experience during your stay at St. Regis, Afternoon Tea is absolutely compulsory! The tradition dates back to the late 19th century for St. Regis, when Lady Astor inaugurated the ritual of inviting her grand acquaintances to Afternoon Tea at Club 400, in what is now The St. Regis New York. You can live like Lady Astor for a few indulgent hours by taking a seat in the hotel’s majestic Tea Lounge for an elegant Afternoon Tea. A friendly tea sommelier will help you choose your perfect brew from 25 loose-leaf teas, which are masterfully accompanied by a gourmet selection of cakes, finger sandwiches, scones and innovative hors d’oeuvres. An experience you’ll brag about to your nearest and dearest!

PEP TALK

Ramadan Health Tips

Avoid Fried Foods A lot of Ramadan food can be very rich. Try and avoid fried and spicy food as they may lead to heartburn and indigestion.

Do Not Overeat Drink Plenty of Water A whole day of fasting can lead to dehydration. Drink water throughout the evening, aiming for at least eight glasses by bedtime.

Break your fast with dates or small amount of nuts along with either milk, water or fruit juice. After an extended period of fasting you need to bring the fluids and blood sugar levels up slowly, without overdoing it.

Eat Sohour Although, it might be difficult to wake up early, try and eat Sohourr just prior to dawn. It’s the most important meal of the day and will keep you energised throughout the day. Keep it light and take in complex carbohydrates, protein, fruit or vegetables and water.

Do Light Exercise It’s good to do some light exercise like walking for 15-20 minutes, and best done in the evenings.

Stay Cool Eat Healthy Desserts As tempting as it may be to devour sugary desserts, go for a healthy option of fresh fruit and nuts, to help you stop putting on the pounds.

Quit Smoking

Rest Up Ramadan throws you off your regular schedule. Organise yourself and day in such a way that gets you plenty of rest and sleep.

Avoid Caffeine As much as possible try and resist drinking tea, coffee or aerated drinks as they dehydrate you further. Opt for a glass of water instead.

Ramadan is the best time to give up smoking. Change your habits by avoiding situations where you are used to smoking. Drink plenty of water and distract yourself by keeping busy with other activities or taking up a new hobby.

It is especially hot this Ramadan, so during the hottest part of the day, try and remain indoors or in shaded areas.

Tell us your three favourite family-friendly places in Abu Dhabi… My three family-friendly places are Dalma Mall, the Corniche and Circle Café at Al Raha Gardens Plaza. Dalma Mall has Fun City, Adventure World, an art station and a giant Toys R Us, with its own playroom inside. Dalma offers accommodations for children of all ages and some are FREE! Circle Café literally has a playground just outside its doors, which helps to pass time while waiting for orders, and the Corniche is perfect for free-style family fun. 90. fact magazine

One item that you never leave the house without and why? I never leave home without my iPhone. Abu Dhabi is a cultural wonderland; you never know what or who you will encounter moving around the Emirates. I want the ability to capture and communicate all of its splendour - immediately.

Describe your ideal day out in Abu Dhabi… My ideal day out in Abu Dhabi involves good food, scenic views and opulence. I love Fridays in Abu Dhabi so I would start with Friday brunch at the Fairmont Hotel. Then,

I would drive along Sheikh Khalifa highway, overlooking Saadiyat Beach, to make my way to Tips and Toes in Khalifa City A. It’s on the way home and the ultimate chill spot for me is a comfortable seat, in a serene environment, with my feet in a pedicure bowl.

Tell us a hidden gem you’ve found in the city and love… My ultimate hidden gem is Café Arabia. The ambience and decor make you feel as if you’re dining in an eclectic Arabian home. The food is great and well priced. Cafe Arabia is culture, excellent service and exquisite food all wrapped into one.
