There aren’t many things that make us say ‘wow!’ at first glance, but the newly opened Abu Dhabi Suite, suspended between the two Nation Towers, and part of the St. Regis Abu Dhabi, had us in awe from the minute we stepped of its very own private elevator. We just had to share this lavish find, because, let’s face it everyone likes a little escapism. Pure indulgence doesn’t even begin to cover the feeling of opulence you get once inside the two-storey, 1,120sqm labyrinth (yes, it’s THAT big!). This architectural feat houses a grand drawing room with an art deco glass dome and bronze crystal chandelier; three bedrooms, a nanny’s room, and four and a half bathrooms (even the half bathroom has two stalls!); a private spa with sauna, steam room, Jacuzzi and a two-bed treatment room; a majlis with floor to ceiling windows; and a majestic dining room with the biggest 10-seat round table that we’ve ever seen! If that wasn’t enough, for those lucky guests staying in the world’s highest suspended suite (it stands 200 metres above the ground), you can kick back and enjoy your favourite flicks in the five-seat private theatre, impressive enough to rival anything you might see on MTV cribs.

Extravagance aside, the Abu Dhabi Suite’s prime position on the 48th and 49th floors, means only one thing; incredible views. Panoramic scenery doesn’t get better than this; as well as the Corniche, you get an ample look over the stunning Emirates Palace and the surrounding area, not to mention that there’s pure peace and quiet in every room of the suite. Rest assured, that if you’re going to call this place home for a few days, it’s well equipped with a library, lounge, and private study, as well as having the added benefits of the signature St. Regis butler service and complimentary Bentleychauffeured transfers – right, when can we move in?! So, what’s the price for this abundant luxury living? Well, a cool AED100,000 will get you a night’s stay. Yes, the Abu Dhabi Suite is fit for royalty, A-list celebs and wealthy entrepreneurs... but, hey, now you have an insight into how extraordinary it is, there’s no harm in wishful thinking. Here’s to ‘maybe one day’… until then, it’s back to reality for us!

Around the world ...Doing the UAE Proud

Bringing you the latest news of fellow Emiratis around the world... tell us your news, or share your finds with us on twitter @FACTAbuDhabi!

Washington 25 Emirati artists will showcase their work in the USA over the next 18 months, making stops in Washington, Texas and California. The first leg of the exhibition went on display in Washington DC last month, as part of an initiative with the UAE Embassy in the US and the Meridian International Centre. Work by renowned artist Latifa Bint Maktoum, as well as pieces by some younger artists like Maitha Demithan, Zaineb Al Hashemi, and Khalid Mezaina will make up the exciting exhibition which aims to highlight the balance between the UAE’s rapid development as well as its deep heritage and traditional values.

New Jersey 12 Emiratis completed a charitable mission to New Jersey where they helped to rebuild a home that was destroyed by Hurricane Sandy. This eight-day mission to Sea Bright was part of the Emirates Foundation for Youth Development’s Takatof Programme. Local people supported the volunteers with building the house’s foundation, frame and scaffolding. It’s nice to see the younger generation getting involved with helping to rebuild communities through this great initiative, well done team!

UAE Buzz

Cannes The media and entertainment organisations in Abu Dhabi and Dubai united at the UAE Pavilion at Cannes, to promote the UAE’s emerging film industry. The delegates of twofour54 represented the Abu Dhabi Film Festival (ADFF), and along with the Abu Dhabi Film Commission (ADFC), they were able to raise awareness to build Abu Dhabi as a media hub and to support the city’s film and TV industry’s development by promoting the Emirates as a great choice for production location.

Pedestrian Accidents Increase

India 12-year-old Abdul Muqueet, from Abu Dhabi, was presented the NRI of the Year Award at a dazzling function in Mumbai, for his contribution in protecting the environment. Abdul makes paper bags and distributes them among local shopkeepers to discourage them from using plastic bags. He’s popularly known as the ‘Paper Bag Boy’ of Abu Dhabi and the bags even have a brand name, Mukku (cool, right?). The youngster shared the stage with legendary actor Amitabh Bacchan at the event which was organised by Indian channel, Times Now, and ICICI Bank.

Dubai cops have brought to attention the dangers of pedestrians jaywalking in the city, with 11 people losing their lives as a result. We’re shocked because most UAE cities have excellent pedestrian crossings. Police are now running campaigns to create awareness of how to cross the road safely, so we ask you all to be on alert and stay safe.

Dh1 Million Up For Grabs

When we heard that Dh1 Million was being offered as the prize for a video gamers’ battle, we were tempted to close up the office and go practice our couch potato talent. Up to 50,000 ‘armchair footballers’ will put their quick wits, and even quicker thumbs to the test in The Million Player video game tournament this month. They’ll play each other in the Fifa 14 game on PS4 – seriously, Dh1 Million? Where do we sign up?

FACT FOCUS

“I had never expected to have readers or this many followers. Nor do I keep that as a target. I have been lucky that my readers enjoy what I write...”

Sayana Rahiman My Mouth is Full www.mymouthisfull.com

Hi Sayana! Tell us a little bit about My Mouth is Full – what made you start the blog? This food blog is a project to chronicle all the great eats I’ve tried and tasted in the UAE and wherever we travel. It’s a personal record of recipes I’ve read and learnt from family and the fantastic community of food bloggers. When I’m too old to chew or remember and have lost my sense of taste, through this blog I’ll be able to relive my life with family and friends alongside our food. I have a sweet-tooth that is insatiable. This should explain why most of my posts will fall under the sickly sweet category. What are the pros and cons about being a blogger in Abu Dhabi? Pros: The food scene in the capital is really developing. As a foodie, this gives me a lot of choices to look forward to. Getting first access to exclusive dining opportunities. Cons: Most of the food events are in Dubai currently, and are held on weekdays, so I end up missing a lot of inaugurations, restaurant reviews and meet-the-chef events. Most restaurants in the capital are either fine dining or cheap-eats. Dining options to explore are currently limited, but restaurants are slowly sprouting all over town. Where do you find your foodie inspiration? I have always loved food and all my senses are eager to trying something new. My inspiration can come from anything – from something I taste, read or see. For me, it’s all about being open and exploring new things.

How did you build such a loyal following? I had never expected to have readers or this many followers. Nor do I keep that as a target. I have been lucky that my readers enjoy what I write and that my followers keep increasing with time. Describe the local dining scene… You’re spoiled for choice as far as Middle Eastern food is concerned. Breakfast and brunch options are plenty. And since the capital city is a small island, you will always find something interesting round the corner. Your favourite places to eat in the city… Lips Café in Marina Mall has a classic menu with soup, sandwiches and salads. Their shish taouk is consistently good. I would skip lunch any day for a slice of Magnolia Bakery’s Chocolate Cake, newly opened in Galleria Mall. The royal ambience and the extensive Indian menu has us returning to the Pepper Mill in Wahda Mall on special occasions. Don’t leave without trying the lamb Barrah Kababs.

What tips do you have for bloggers? Be true to yourself. You can get inspired by other blogs, but ultimately develop your own style and your readers will keep coming back for more. Don’t let statistics and number of posts be your motivation to blog. Enjoy what you do instead. What are some of the local hidden gems in the city? A nice little gourmet shawarma shop called Shish Shawarma, where the bread is baked fresh right in front of you. This shop is tucked away on an inside street in Khalidiyah; the queues here would rival an Apple store on an iPhone launch day. Where do you see your blog in 5 years? I don’t have a long-term plan. I hope to develop my photography and styling skills more and be able to attend more events. As of now, I’d like to take it one post at a time. fact magazine .25

FACT FOCUS

Hi girls! Tell us a little bit about TFH – what made you start the blog? Both: TFH is a style portal that enables the fashion forward community to gain an insight into our styles, and follow our journey within the fashion world. The whole idea of the blogosphere really interested us, as it became such a phenomenon, so we wanted to form our style into that, both locally and www.the-fashion-hub.com globally.

Parisa &Lydia The fashion Hub

What are the pros and cons about being a blogger in Abu Dhabi? Parisa: Cons being there’s a limited amount of boutiques and fashion events, however, the pros being its so diverse and up and coming, so to be a part of that, in a city like this, is amazing. Lydia: It’s always great to develop in such a new and up coming city, surrounded by multiculturalism, this constantly makes fashion events and meetings extremely fun. However, although Abu Dhabi is still emerging in the industry, a slight drawback would be that there aren’t enough events that we can cover for TFH on a regular basis. Describe your personal style… Parisa: I can never define my overall style because it’s constantly evolving with time, but I do tend to wear darker hues, a lot of blacks and greys. I love drape as well as structure, but most of all I love to accessorise. I tend to wear a lot of rings and heavy necklaces; I can’t really function without them. Lydia: It’s moderately androgynous in the sense that I love layering masculine garments on top of each other because I feel like the practicality of clothing is vital when it comes to my style, but I do consistently add a feminine aspect.

Where do you find your inspiration? Parisa: Everyday life, it can be anything art, music, even other people’s outfits; I love to deconstruct things, see how people have formed their outfits the way they have. Along with of course, catwalk looks, celebrity style etc. Lydia: My primary source of inspiration is on the Internet, finding nonchalant and interesting street style photographs from fashion week always inspires me to gain a deeper insight into the industry. How did you build such a loyal following? Both: We think that staying true to who we are has created our loyal readership both locally and globally. We rear away from generic trends, so forming a different adaption to particular fashions has gained us a lot of our readers. As well as just continuously informing our following of the latest news in fashion, and what we’ve been up to. We build a connection with them so that they have a platform to rely on for current happenings.

What tips do you have for bloggers? Both: Go for it, and don’t give up. Be patient as it does take time, but hard work definitely does pay off. And never change your style for anyone/ anything else, as that doesn’t differentiate you from anyone.

“Be patient as it does take time, but hard work definitely does pay off. And never change your style for anyone/ anything else...”

Name some local hidden gems in the city? Both: As of yet we haven’t found any, but one of our friends is opening a boutique ‘The Luxury Arcade’ soon, which is so exciting as she’s introducing a new level of fashion to the city. What fashion trends should we watch out for in Abu Dhabi, in 2014? Both: Pastel colours are coming back in, and we’ve seen them in lots of stores in Abu Dhabi, so definitely mixing different hues of pastels together, in an ensemble, is key. Where do you see your blog in 5 years? Parisa: International, as we’ll be sharing our time between Dubai and London as Lydia is moving there later this year for university. Lydia: Internationally known hopefully.

From the wondering wildlife to the saltdomed hilltops and distinctive desert landscape, Anantara Sir Bani Yas Island Al Sahel Villa Resort, very nearly feels like you’re in the heart of Africa. Shabana Adam visited the island to find out what it offers… Location and Leisure An Arabian Wildlife Park in the UAE? Yes, that’s right. Sir Bani Yas Island, Abu Dhabi boasts open plains encompassing a 4,100 hectare wildlife park, and the stunning resort of Anantara Al Saleh sits amid the island’s rugged surroundings with over 10,000 free-roaming animals. It’s an elegant oasis where you can relax by the pool to the gentle lull of a desert breeze, or head to the Anantara Spa for pure pampering. For the more adventurous, there’s a ton of activities to keep boredom at bay; from archery, kayaking, mountain biking, to snorkelling, horse riding, scenic seaplane flights and, more importantly, the nature and wildlife drives where you can get up close to

some of the most fascinating animals on, not just the island, but the planet. Afternoon with the giraffes anyone?

Luxury Accommodation

Why it’s worth visiting?

The resort is made up of 30 luxury villas, from where you can catch a rare glimpse of grazing gazelles and other island life. With traditional thatch-roofed design, each villa offers the best of luxury amenities with an authentic touch of elegance and comfort. We particularly love the rustic chic design, combined with local tones and materials, and being able to experience the wild wonders of savannah life from the comfort of a private sanctuary, that complements its natural surroundings with such sophistication. Having your own private hot tub or plunge pool (depending on which villa you choose) is also a huge bonus!

Anantara Sir Bani Yas Island Al Sahel Villa Resort, is one of the very few destinations in this region that truly offers something exclusive; it’s location is reminiscent of real world Africa, with cheetahs, giraffes, gazelles and Oryx, amongst its inhabitants. The service and welcoming hospitality we experienced, was above and beyond many other 5-star resorts in the region. And we love the fact that it’s one of the coolest eco-friendly travel options so close to Abu Dhabi. Couples, this has romance written all over it; singletons, you’ll be well-catered for too with so many exciting activities on offer. A HISTORY OF THE WORLD TCA Abu Dhabi has collaborated with the British Museum to present ‘A History of the World in 100 Objects’; an inspiring exhibition displaying some of the most beautiful, interesting, weird and unique objects that humans have invented and used. “One of my favourite objects is the Royal Game of Ur... one of the first big cities to spring up anywhere in the world, their focus was on leisure and game playing – I think that’s really a lovely human connection between now and then.”

istory buffs, fact finders and art connoisseurs are in for a real treat with ‘A History of the World’ (AHOW) expo; not only does it last for 100 days and have an array of incredible articles from all over the world, it’s offering a flavour of the eagerly anticipated Zayed National Museum set to open in 2016, in the heart of the Saadiyat Cultural District. Becky Allen, AHOW exhibition curator from the British Museum, explains: “The point of the exhibition is what can we learn from objects? Because objects are universal: we have many societies throughout history who didn’t leave us any text or any literature – but everybody makes and uses objects. They’re a very democratic way of looking at the past,” says Becky. The exhibition is split into eight main sections with big themes, such as, faith and Islam, people and heritage, and science and learning, as well as having an introduction and conclusion too. “One in the middle is all about trading and invading, so the Silk Road through the Indian Ocean, and the Vikings, all big stories about how people encountered one

another at this point in time,” adds Becky. A History of the World originally started as a radio series in the UK, but talking about such fascinating objects like the Chinese Jade Hair Ornament (dated c.3500 BCE), the Bird-Shaped Pestle from Papua New Guinea (dated 6000 – 2000 BCE), and the Mexican Huastec Sculpture (900 -1521 CE), to name but a few, and actually putting them on display, is a challenging task in itself. “Some of the objects at the museum are really fragile, some are very small,” says Becky. “So my big challenge was making replacements that would still tell dazzling stories.” For the local crowd, AHOW also explores several important objects from the Middle East. There’s an intriguing burnt bowl introducing early cattle farming in Northern Iraq (dated 5600 – 5200 BCE), beautiful gold coins demonstrating the spread of Islam in the 7th Century, and the famous Royal Game of Ur, inviting visitors into the cosmopolitan world of the Sumerians (dated 2500 BCE). fact magazine .35

excited about museum visiting and seeing exhibitions,” says Becky. “And to get people used to the idea of Saadiyat Island being the place to go to see these exhibitions is also really important.” FACT is excited for the last section of the exhibition which features a groundbreaking foot-controlled car, invented by Emirati student Ms. Reem Al Marzouqi from the United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) in 2013, which has the capacity to change the lives of disabled drivers. The exhibition perfectly captures the idea of the ‘world of our making’ and maintains a great global balance. It’s definitely worth a visit to marvel the ingenious, creative and thoughtful people and cultures, around the world, past and present.

Surround Sound

International sound artist Bill Fontana visited Abu Dhabi to present ‘Acoustic Visions’, a unique exhibition at Emirates Palace, during Abu Dhabi Festival. Two lucky students from ADMAF had the chance to accompany the talented composer to the desert and see him in action. FACT caught up with them all to find out more on this unusual art form…

GOING LOCAL

“I feel like this region is really trying to come to life in cultural ways and it’s really important that the young generation feel a certain confidence in themselves to be artists...”

Bill Fontana

He started out as a composer and his creative passion led Bill Fontana, a San Francisco-based sound sculptor to explore other areas of this unique practice. “I didn’t want to make only concerts and recordings,” he says. “It seemed more interesting to create something that was somewhat related to the way people really experience sounds in the world.” And that’s what he did for Abu Dhabi Art Festival’s ‘Acoustic Visions’; a pioneering exhibition in the UAE which allowed visitors to experience being in the desert through sound. “I was aware of the history in Abu Dhabi and all this amazing development in the region,” Bill says. “But, I got curious about what was here before all these structures, and this led us to the desert.” Using an intricate piece of equipment – an accelerometer (a tool normally used by structural engineers to measure vibrations in structures) – Bill was able to capture the beautiful desert sounds. 40. fact magazine

“My first visit to the desert, I had a hunch that if I put the accelerometer in the sand dunes I would hear something interesting,” Bill explains. “What I found was that the sound was remarkably like the sound of waves in the sea and the beach.” The accelerometer’s sensor picked up on motion and vibration of thousands of sand particles which made for the ‘acoustic’ part of the exhibition. The ‘vision’ came in the form of close up video providing a microscopic look into the sand, displayed on wall-size projections (it was quite incredible!). Working with young students was also something Bill appreciated “I feel like this region is really trying to come to life in cultural ways and it’s really important that the young generation feel a certain confidence in themselves to be artists and to be creative,” he says. He’s been working with sound for 40 years now and Bill is in no rush to throw in the towel anytime soon, telling us that he’ll be doing this “until I die”. With some big projects coming up this year, we’re sure that there are many more ground-breaking sound experiments on the way.

GOING LOCAL Fatima was surprised by Bill’s eagerness to share information about his work and his life.

Fatima Abdulla Al Hashm

She finds inspiration in music and different ways of life, “I love jazz and classic,” says Fatima. “And in the colours, designs and other cultures already out there.” So, when she was given the chance to meet Bill Fontana and venture into the desert for the sound sculpture project, Fatima, an art major, was intrigued. “I had never heard of making art through sound so it was a new experience for me,” she says. “It really wasn’t what I expected; Bill showed us the equipment he uses and how it all works,” she explains. “The most fun part for me was setting up

the camera to capture the sound – this is something I have experience in.” Fatima believes it’s very important for the Gulf region to involve young people in art and that having people like Bill Fontana visit, helps the young art community grow their personalities and confidence. “I talked to him about his life, the culture where he lives, we shared information, and he gave me advice,” says Fatima. She hopes to teach art to children whilst travelling the world, and we think Fatima shows real potential for doing wonderful things in the future.

Manuel Nivia Manuel enjoyed Bill’s visit becuase it gave him a furthe rinsight into different sound recording equipment, adding to his music knowledge.

“ I was searching for sand animation and how to draw it, but there were no lessons available. So, I watched the videos and learnt movements.”

For Manuel, meeting Bill Fontana was exciting because of his own personal love for sound. As a music major Manuel is interested in the equipment and the technology used for recording. “Seeing Bill record 8 channels at the same time with this accelerometer is something we all were interested to know more about,” says Manuel. Talking about the local music scene, he says, “In terms of music there’s a lot more than meets the eye. There’s a lot of talent that is not properly discovered or showcased because there aren’t enough platforms.” Manuel is currently working on AUHDIO, a personal project born out of hope to inspire other people to create art. AUHDIO involves putting on small music showcases, “there is no art without an audience,” he says. “We want the audience to see the importance of them participating and attending, and collaborating with the musician.” Manuel was 15 when he decided he wanted to be a musician, and the future is an exciting prospect. “I recognise that I will always do music independent of whether it is my main form of living or not,” he says. fact magazine

On the Record INDIE POP/ROCK

Ultraviolence By LANA DEL REY

How we’ve missed the moody music of Miss Lana Del Rey, and oh how we’re ready for another spellbinding journey of hypnotic tunes. The 14-track Ultraviolence is enshrouded in mystery, and you need only look to the cruising sound of West Coast, the lead single off this sophomore album, to get an indication for what’s in store. The singer is stepping away from the orchestral pop flair of her previous work and gracefully wondering into experimental territory. Get ready for a musical revolution of subversive sounds and lyrics.

POP/CONTEMPORARY R&B

In The Lonely Hour By Sam Smith

There’s no denying that Sam Smith has created somewhat of a musical riot with his unbelievable vocals, rocketing to the top of the music scene when he was featured vocalist on Disclosure’s big hit Latch, and awarded the Brit’s Critic Choice Award 2013. The soul-inspired, London-born artist brings fans the 10-track record In The Lonely Hour, and if it’s to follow suit of what we’ve heard off it so far, this could well be a serious contender for album of the year. It’s clear that the debut release is a real labour of love; his first solo effort, Lay Me Down, was a surprise of soulful and sweet vibes, whilst the infectious Money On My Mind, grabbed listeners with relaxed vocals and a frenetic beat. His list of collabos is somewhat impressive too; Disclosure, Naughty Boy, Zane Lowe and Fraser T Smith, to name but a few, but we’re looking most forward to Sam’s signature sound to shine through on this one!

FOLK/POP/GRIME

By Ed Sheeran

It doesn’t hurt that Ed’s BFF Taylor Swift has helped him to choose the songs for his muchanticipated second studio album, and rumours say that some of the biggest names in music… Pharell Williams, Lupe Fiasco, Labrinth and Macklemore… will likely feature on X. The 12-track album includes songs with the puzzling names; Tenerife, New York, Forever, and the equally mysterious Mess, Don’t, Nina and Afire Love. With the legendary Rick Rubin on production and an album about personal drama, Ed is likely onto a winner.

Flash Boys – A Wall Street Revolt By MICHAEL LEWIS

A gripping book, Flash Boys – A Wall Street Revolt, focuses on High Frequency Trading (HFT) in the US market. The book reveals the inside workings of a stock market; how it works, the kind of people working there and most importantly the current issue ‘finance’ is facing. Flash Boys is about a small group of Wall Street guys who figure out that the US stock market has been rigged for the benefit of the insiders and that, post–financial crisis, the markets have become not more free but less, and more controlled by the big Wall Street banks. For example, Lewis gives a great explanation of how large banks use “dark pools”, which were created to be a sort of refuge from HFTs, to rip off clients by selling them out to HFTs. This is definitely a riveting read as it explores the darkest corners of the financial world.

Look Who’s Back By TIMUR VERMES

We’re not sure if this book would amuse or horrify you! Berlin Summer 2011, Hitler wakes up on a piece of waste ground. He dusts himself up and cautiously explores the city, only to realise things have changed drastically. People around him assume he’s a Hitler look-alike and is dressed for a comedy show. His reaction to contemporary Germany is often hilarious. Both funny and frightening, this is a subtle, historical study of the commanding nature of the fanatic agitator, and a severe critique of contemporary western culture.

Transformers: Age of Extinction

What’s It About: Our favourite two officers are back and all set to go deep undercover at a local college. This time they deal with an aftermath when Jenko meets a similar spirited player on the football team, and Schmidt invades the bohemian art major scene. This situation questions their partnership and they must figure out if they can have a mature relationship and crack the case at the same time. Will college be the best thing that ever happened to them? Will they work things out? Get ready for another incredible joyride full of action, adventure and lots of laughs!

Director: Michael Bay Cast: Mark Wahlberg, Nicola Peltz, Jack Reynor, Stanley Tucci.

What’s It About: This plot revolves around a struggling inventor and single father, Cade, and his daughter Tessa. When Cade buys an old truck, he soon discovers that the worn-out vehicle is being used as a camouflage for the one and only Optimus Prime. Cade’s discovery sends the robot and human world into chaos as other Autobots, their villainous counterparts, Decepticons, and even a suspicious government team, are all on the lookout for Cade and his new pal. Why It’s Worth Watching: The cast has changed drastically, and, yes, this might not be a bad thing as Shia Lebouf has declared, “I am not famous anymore”, but we can’t help but miss his awkward character. The only promising component here is that Michael Bay is still at the helm of the film and Mark Wahlberg is a pretty good choice to play the lead. It’s the plot that we’re worried about; single father buys truck, truck turns into an intergalactic robot, bad guys chase his family, he helps the robot because, let’s face it, life is much more interesting now, and then we stop on a cliffhanger to make way for the sequel. We’re not saying that Transformers: Age of Extinction won’t be a great film; just that it has a lot to live up to. As long as we get a good dose of Optimus Prime we’ll give this one a chance.

The Fault in Our Stars

Director: Josh Boone Cast: Shailene Woodley, Ansel Elgort What’s It About: This is a love story that will sweep you off your feet and take you on an unforgettable romantic journey. Terminally ill 16-year-old Hazel reluctantly attends the Cancer Support Society where she meets Augustus, and eventually they fall in love. Their relationship is all the more miraculous given that Hazel’s other constant companion is an oxygen tank and Gus jokes about his prosthetic leg. They bond over their illness and their sharp wit. Canon G1 X Mark II It’s been described as the beast of the compact cameras boasting pro features for amateur photographers. To find out how true that is, Shabana Adam went to the UAE’s stunning Sir Bani Yas Island, to test Canon’s new line of products including this flagship model… Working on editorial for a magazine amounts to a fair bit of pressure when it comes to finding excellent hi-res images; from food to travel, arts and motoring, my monthly challenge is to make sure that the pictures, passed onto our talented design team, are nothing short of pixel perfect. That’s what spurred my interest in the Canon Summer Arabia media trip to Anantara Sir Bani Yas Island, Al Sahel Villa Resort, just off the shores of Abu Dhabi (a night in a beautiful villa was, of course, an added bonus!). Canon Middle East’s exclusive media trip involved a group of around 20 bloggers and writers from the region’s top print and online publications, invited for a one-night stay including various workshop type activities. The tech giant used this opportunity to introduce a whole new range of hero products; the EOS 1200D, the PowerShot SX700 HS, the IXUS 155, the Legria Mini X, and what we found to be the standout of them all, the PowerShot G1 X Mark II. Testing the PowerShot G1 X Mark II was a blast to say the least. Following the creative theme of ‘Perfect Pictures this Summer, Whatever Happens’ we embarked on a wildlife and nature safari drive

46. fact magazine

followed by a cookery class, to put this group of cameras through its paces. Immediately, the PowerShot GI X Mark II, made a great impact on everyone who handled the camera. Its DSLR-standard performance packed in a compact body helped to deliver pristine image quality. The ease of form and functions, for even an amateur photographer like myself, was hugely appealing – a result of features engineered using feedback from professional photographers. Taking pictures of giraffes on the move, cheetahs lazing in the wadi, and gazelles gliding through the trees, is a challenging task in itself. However, the PowerShot G1 X Mark II made it possible to capture a variety of images from a range of perspectives. Portraits appear with a professional touch and macro photography is made easier with a large 1.5-type Canon CMOS sensor, which delivers shallow depth of field, comparable to an APS-C size DSLR sensor. Aside from this, it features a new super-bright f/2.03.9 lens, which maintains a wide f/3.9 aperture even when fully zoomed, delivering excellent low-light performance and the ability to control depth of field.

TIPS Jason Rego, Retail Marketing Manager, Canon Middle East

KNOW your gear

Know what the minimum shutter speed is at which you can obtain a sharp image. The really great action-packed moments in wildlife photography last on average between 5 and 20 seconds.

WORK the light

03

02

Since photography is all about painting with light, you need to know how to use the light to your best advantage. If you adhere to tip #1 (Know your Gear) you can get some pretty interesting images from a less-than-ideal light position.

04

SHOOT WIDER shoot closer

03. Grazing gazelles look into the camera; 04. Giraffes take shade from the afternoon heat.

Challenge yourself to shoot at a wider angle to give a better idea of where you took the image and where your subject has to carve out a living in the wild. This applies to any species photographed. fact magazine .47

Nokia XL: bOLD, Bright and beautiful

Nokia has gone and done it again. The phone company has recently launched a range of affordable smartphones into the ‘X’ family tree. We take a look at the colourful Nokia XL model to see if this new device can hold its own in the fast-growing and competitive mobile market… Introduction Nokia is undoubtedly one of the forefathers of the modern phone industry, renowned for the sturdy build quality of its devices, yet it seems that the Finnish firm wasn’t quite prepared when the colossal wave of smartphones hit the market and demand for such devices surged to an all-time high. Thankfully, Nokia’s recent marriage with Microsoft seems to be having a positive influence as it has just launched not one, but three, Android devices into the ‘X’ family, and the Nokia XL is the daddy of them all. Design & Display Consistently recognised for its handset quality and design, the Nokia XL follows suit with a fresh, tilebased user interface inspired by the Lumia family. You might, however, expect a phone of phablet proportions (especially when it’s called the XL), but even though this is the largest version of the Nokia X line, it sports a 5-inch display – reasonable by today’s standards – measuring slightly wider than its family members, the

Nokia X and X+. It’s almost comfortable to operate in one hand, though you may have to stretch to punch certain controls. If aesthetics is less your concern, and image is what you’re after then the cool kids need to look no further. The XL comes in a range of colours including orange, cyan, yellow, green, black, and white. The phone benefits from a soft-touch coating giving it a smooth grip, with defined square corners and sides characterising the device’s blocky shape. Weighing in at 190g the phone is solid to hand and feels heavy, but Nokia has done a great job of keeping the buttons rising high above the surface phone. Features & Performance All the X family devices come with Fastlane, a screen which lets you switch between your favourite apps more efficiently. It’s easier to access curated, quality-tested apps from the Nokia Store, more than a dozen third-party app stores and by side loading. All devices are also pre-loaded with a variety of third-party apps and games. The XL specifically boasts a 2MP front-facing camera – ideal for Skype video calls – and a 5MP rear-facing, autofocus camera with flash. The entire Nokia X family is powered by the Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ dual core processor and supports Dual SIM, letting people switch SIM cards to get better tariffs. Although you may not get much juice out of the 1GHz, the low-powered XL might not be as resource-hungry. The RAM size is 768MB, but it also has 4GB internal storage which can be boosted by a microSD card if need be. The 2,000mAh battery promises up to 13 hours of talk time over 3G, pretty impressive, we think!

The Nokia XL is an affordable smartphone with an impressive range of specs.

Value for Money All of the X family devices are priced to capture the fast-growing affordable smartphone market. With an array of more than a few decent specs – a large-capacity battery, nice camera, and sophisticated Android platform – the Nokia XL may just be the new flagship smartphone for the company. fact magazine .49

The all-New Porsche Macan

fact magazine

.51

Porsche have gone to great lengths to present the Macan as ‘a grown up 911’ rather than a ‘baby Cayenne’. So, how successful have they been in the delivery? FACT heads off to scenic Ras Al Khaimah in the UAE to find out… From the outside, there’s no mistaking where the Macan gets its DNA from, however Porsche try to present it. From a distance, many would mistake it for the Cayenne, and even up close they’re very similar. While the Macan is visibly smaller when the two are parked next to each other, the main tell is the one-piece ‘clam shell’ bonnet the Macan features. Interestingly, this is the biggest single piece of aluminium ever used in a car’s bodywork, according to Porsche. The interior of the Macan is superb. Comfortable and cosy, it almost feels tailor made to the driver, with a figure-hugging sports seat holding you in place for fast cornering, and controls that are all literally 52. fact magazine

at your fingertips. It features the same large, raised centre console as the Cayenne and Panamera that makes you feel like you’re sitting in the cockpit of a jet, with all the Sport, Sport Plus and suspension settings conveniently featured. The Macan is currently being offered in just two specifications, the Macan S, with a 340hp 3.0l V6 biturbo engine, and the Macan Turbo, with a 400hp 3.6l V6 biturbo. Both feature a permanent all-wheel-drive system, and Porsche’s superb and lightning-quick PDK double-clutch transmission comes standard on all models, which is something the Cayenne has never featured thus far. To demonstrate the Macan’s abilities,

CITY RIDES

Porsche flew us out to the stunning Fairmont Ras Al Khaimah for two separate experiences. The first was a purpose built off-road course, including soft sand, axlebenders and steep inclines. The off-road setting raises the Macan by a considerable 40mm, giving it decent ground clearance and approach, and departure angles. The upshot of this is that, despite its diminutive size, the Macan can handle any low-to-medium difficulty off-road terrain with ease, but on the more rugged stuff you risk costly damage to your lovely Porsche bodywork and underside. The second experience was a breathtaking drive up the road to Jebel Jais, the UAE’s tallest mountain, which in our humble opinion pips Jebel Hafeet as the best driving road in the Gulf, and one of the best in the world. Why haven’t you heard of this road, you ask? Because it’s not actually finished – construction hasn’t reached the summit yet, so the road’s not officially open, but trust us, it’ll be famous soon enough! The Macan S and Turbo boast almost identical driving characteristics, especially with the Sports Chrono package as featured on the demo models we reviewed, though obviously the Turbo has noticeably more ‘oomph’ on acceleration. As with any Porsche, the Cayenne and Panamera included, a fanatical level of attention has been given to the driving experience of the Macan, and it shows. Whilst the Cayenne demonstrated almost supernatural levels of handling and performance for an SUV (the key words being ‘for an SUV’), the Macan demonstrates 54. fact magazine

comparable handling and performance to the Panamera and even the 911, thanks to the Porsche Active Suspension Management and Torque Vectoring. We know this is a bold statement, but in our opinion, the Macan is, without a doubt, the sportiest premium compact SUV in the world, by a long shot. Nothing else – not the BMW X3, not the Audi Q3, nor the Mercedes GLK – even comes close. A large reason for this is that, whereas its premium German rivals are something of a compromise (i.e. less costly versions of their larger brethren), Porsche have not compromised with the Macan at all. It’s not a cheaper version of the Cayenne, simply a smaller, sportier version.

“As with any Porsche, the Cayenne and Panamera included, a fanatical level of attention has been given to the driving experience of the Macan, and it shows.”

A Lady of Harley

We talk to Elsa Abi Nader, a woman paving the way for female motorcycle riders across the region. Female Harley-Davidson riders are no new thing, with famous female figures riding the iconic bikes as far back as the 1920s, when Bessie Stringfield, an African American woman, taught herself to ride, and crossed the United States eight times on her Harley during World War II as one of only a handful of female army couriers. She went on to own 27 Harley-Davidsons during her lifetime! Since then, famous women ranging from Bridget Bardot to Cher have been well-known for owning Harleys. In the Middle East, however, where motorcycle culture is still relatively new and traditional gender roles are much more entrenched, women riding Harley-Davidsons is a much rarer sight, and local

women even rarer still. Breaking those boundaries is Elsa Abi Nader, Marketing Manager for Harley Davidson MENA, who is encouraging women to saddle up across the Gulf. How long have you been a Harley rider? I’ve been a Harley rider for threeand-a-half years now. What is it about Harley-Davidson? What makes a Harley a Harley? It’s the way you can customise it however you want, so every bike is unique. You can make it your own, and it can represent who you are and what you like. As a result, you never see two similar bikes. What about the experience of actually riding a Harley? We always talk about the look, the sound and the feel. When you sit on the bike, you feel different, you feel

“It’s the way you can customise it however you want, so every bike is unique. You can make it your own...”

56. fact magazine

”When you’re riding the bike you don’t feel the weight of it. An experienced woman can ride even the biggest bikes we have...” alive, and sexy. Each person defines it in a different way, but the general feelings are the same. And the noise of the bikes, it’s unmistakeable. Everybody knows what a Harley sounds like! What about people who are intimidated by the size? When you’re riding the bike you don’t feel the weight of it. An experienced woman can ride even the biggest bikes we have, it’s more about skill and practice than strength, so anyone can ride a Harley. Do you do demonstrations and training? Yes, we do that everywhere. We also have a something called the ‘jumpstart’, for people without a licence who want to find out what it feels like. It’s a Harley-Davidson on a fixed platform, which we can put any bike on. The front wheel is fixed, and the rear

wheel runs, and you can sit on the bike, start it up, experience the sound and the feel, and learn how to change gears and so on. This is a very effective tool, as a lot of people are convinced to buy one that way! What do you say to women who want to ride in the Gulf? I say go for it! Biking in general the region is a very new culture, to everyone, it’s only really become widespread over the last ten years. I’ve been here three-and-a-half years, and me being here has encouraged a lot of women to give it a go, because they see that I can do it, so they know that they can too. So, go for it!

The W 2014 Nissan Patrol Nissan’s new behemoth has had a few changes over the previous model, although these are largely cosmetic. It’s still the expansive, luxurious and highly capable off-roader that’s bringing the fight to the Land Cruiser!

58. fact magazine

e Love The New Nissan Patrol. We loved it when

we first reviewed the latest generation back in 2012, and we still love it now that it has been re-launched for 2014. Changes for the latest model include a revised front end with a re-designed grille, new options in terms of alloy wheels and interior and exterior colours, and the third-generation 360-degree camera, among others. The first impression that the Patrol gives you is of its size. The Nissan Armada is supposed to be the biggest vehicle in the range, but we can tell you, when the two are parked next to each other on the showroom floor there’s really not much in it! Inside, that impression of space continues, with surfaces so vast you feel like you’re really reaching to touch all the controls. This might appeal to those with a love of the grandiose, but not to others who like cosiness, and having everything close to hand. The huge size might also

intimidate unconfident drivers, especially in complicated manoeuvres such as parking in tight spots. The good news in that regard is that the all-round parking cameras are extremely useful, and automatically flash on to the 8-inch touchscreen when the parking sensors detect objects nearby. This is also useful for off-roading, when you’re trying to avoid those tyre-shredding rocks in tricky spots, or that particularly steep approach angle, which the parking sensors will also pick up for you. Inside, the luxury abounds. Plush leather seats (standard with the SE model we reviewed) that resemble living room furniture more than car seats ensure sublime comfort on and off the road. And despite its size, off the road is where the Patrol really comes into its own. With four surface settings, three 4WD settings and differential lock, as well as Hill Descent Control, the Patrol is ready to handle pretty much anything.

CITY RIDES

“It has already broken its own sales records across the board, and has the Cruiser firmly in its sights.

The first impression that the Patrol gives you is of its vast size.

The excellent all-wheel-drive system makes climbing steep gravelly inclines look easy, and the meaty 5.6l V8, which puts out 317hp and 527Nm, will pull the Patrol through soft sand with little fuss. This was a particular focus for Nissan, for whom the GCC market is one of the biggest. The top-spec LE model comes with an uprated version of the same engine, putting out 400hp and a whopping 560Nm of torque, as well as hydraulic body motion control, which makes for a smoother and more comfortable ride both on and off the road. The new Patrol has the Land Cruiser nervously looking over its shoulder, and for good reason. It has already broken its own sales records across the board, and has the Cruiser firmly in its sights. We wait with baited breath to see how Toyota responds!

Lacoste is an iconic brand with a rich history and heritage, full of milestones and fashion feats. Its strong identity and unique aesthetic look has enabled Lacoste to remain at the forefront of the fashion scene.

Lacoste evolution

Aesthetic Elegance

Lacoste’s stylish fashion staple for men, the L. 12. 12 polo has become the cornerstone of the perfect leisure look. FACT’s Pallavi Ramesh takes a walk down memory lane all the way back to the 1920s, bringing you the fascinating journey of this famous brand, all the way up to modern day…

turn back time

The 1920’s French tennis star, Jean Rene Lacoste, was a trendsetter on and off the court. He entered the tennis hall of fame when he and his team-mates, “The Musketeers”, earned the Davis Cup in 1927 and again in 1928. Rene Lacoste also won three French Opens, two Wimbledons and two U.S Open titles. These were some of his eminent on court achievements, but he also scored some major off-court feats. He invented the firsts of many, including the tennis ball launching machine, antivibration string damper and the steel racket. He applied the cutting-edge codes for apparel and invented the Lacoste brand, with which came the trendy polo shirt. Now, what’s the story behind this popular shirt? Rene was quite uncomfortable playing in the long-sleeved and stiffcollared shirts, which made up the usual

L.12.12 polo shirt: L for LACOSTE, 1 for the unique fabric (cotton petit piqué), 2 for the short-sleeved version and 12 for the number of prototypes presented to René Lacoste.

tennis gear back then. His solution was the invention of the short-sleeved cotton piqué polo shirt. The first Lacoste shirt codenamed ‘1212’ was white, with a ribbed collar and short sleeves with three buttons down the front. Lacoste added the alligator emblem to his shirt because ‘Alligator’ was his nickname. After retiring in 1933, Rene established the famed ‘Lacoste Company’ in association with Andre Gillier, and marketed his shirts across Europe and the United States, and eventually, the world. In 1951, a wide colour range was added to the shirts and in less than a decade the first collection for children was launched. There was no looking back after that: Lacoste grew rapidly in popularity, and today, the Lacoste style continues to dominate the fashion scene with its authenticity, high quality, and sophistication.

The know how The Devanlay-Lacoste factory in Troyes brings together all the different steps that are involved in the aristocracy of Lacoste products. The procedure involves four steps of production, which leads to assembly and shipping of the finished product. Knitting Before the knitting process begins, the approved yarn goes for winding followed by paraffining. The knitted fabric is made with raw yarn for plain items and with dyed yarn for stripy or patterned pieces. Elements of the same garment are made of the same cotton batch, with the objective of knitting yarns to make interweaved loops. Dyeing The design office in Paris is where the colours are created, and the dyeing lab breaks down the sample colours with the help of a spectrophotometer (to get the right dye proportion that will best replicate the colours). The compliance is checked by smearing the dye on varied grammages of pique testers.

62. fact magazine

Craftmanship and the work that goes on behind the scenes to make all Lacoste products, especially the famed Polo shirt, is a meticulous process, with excellent results.

Cutting The extra threads are cut off the trims and stitched, after which the trims are checked and counted. The threads sticking out are pulled on and stitched, and pushed back. The ribbings of the sleeves are cut, the threads sticking out are pulled on and finally the ribbings are cut up using a template. Placing With the help of electronic equipment the best placement to cut are examined, in order to use as less material as possible. For striped knit, the placing is manual and done on needle-table so that the stripes match when gathering. Manufacturing and Packing The same manufacturing team gathers each piece and assembles them using various sewing machines. The pieces, finally, are ironed, the labels are stuck on and the final packing is done. The products are then sent to the warehouse where the quality department makes the final call.

Lacoste evolution

Fast Foward fashion To this day, Lacoste remains a reputable fashion brand all over the world. From its basic beginnings with the Polo shirt to now having successful lines of clothing, footwear and accessories.

R

ene Lacoste passed away in 1996. He lived to see the brand reach new heights and today Lacoste is a famous clothes brand with classic, trendy and modern-day choices. There are 90 variations of the Lacoste polo, with styles for men, women and children. Today, the classic tennis white comes in nearly 55 colours every season, with an assortment of solid and subtle colours within each collection. The company has extended its

range of products with high-end clothing, eyewear, footwear, fragrances and watches. Celebrating its 80th anniversary last year, the brand launched a special logo and a new collection, Baptista, combining vintage with contemporary chic t-shirts, eyewear, polo shirts and dresses, all featuring the iconic alligator logo as well as the anniversary logo. Lacoste is a brand with a rich history, and we’re sure, a longlasting, prosperous, and fashionable future.

Mena’s First Beachwear e-Boutique

Online shoppers get ready for the new fashion hotspot of the region, Maison du Maillot. The first beachwear e-boutique in the Middle East is the brainchild of two sisters, Leila and Fifi, who are bringing the latest swimsuits from designers such as Melissa Odabash, Tori Praver and Gypsy05, to name but a few, straight to your fingertips and your front door. Here, FACT chats to the siblings about their exciting business venture‌

68. fact magazine

Tell us a little bit about the vision and inspiration behind Maison du Maillot? We launched the Maison du Maillot e-boutique in early 2014. It offers contemporary swimwear from the most stylish international brands to the region whilst remaining affordable to our customers. The website is tailored for the Middle East consumer, which means it has next day GCC delivery, free returns and a lifestyle blog for the region. Both of us are sun-worshippers who love to travel, enjoy spending time at the beach and taking part in water sports (Leila is a keen surfer, while Fifi spends all her free time at the beach!) Why did you decide to offer beachwear as opposed to all fashion garments? We have really struggled to find swim and beachwear here in the GCC and with the nearly year round sun and beach lifestyle it made sense to source items that we all want in this part of the world; bikinis, one-piece swimsuits, beach bags, free flowing kaftans and floaty summer dresses. Did you face any challenges when setting up the business and how did you overcome them? It was really tough trying to select the pieces we wanted to initially stock, as there are so many gorgeous swimsuits and beachwear designs around the world, however after much debate we think we have selected some unique and stylish pieces for our customers. Tell us more about the exclusive designer

Describe the online shopping experience people can have with Maison du Maillot? As keen online shoppers ourselves, we understand the needs of our customers. The website is easy to navigate, full of interesting content and clear to shop from. Shoppers can create a wish list, save their basket items and can expect next day delivery in the GCC. We also have a stylist on hand that can answer any questions by email or phone.

labels you’ll be bringing to the region for the first time? We have sourced beachwear from the US, Columbia, France, the UK, and the Far East - a real diverse range of places! Some of the designer labels include California brand L*Space, an award-winning label that offers fashion-forward swimwear in chic styles. Saha Swimwear is a unique designer label from Columbia, which balances comfort and design and takes inspiration from nature and romanticism. From the UK we bring the ultimate luxury holiday lifestyle brand Melissa Odabash, a favourite amongst celebrities and stars, who love her exotic, must-have swimsuits.

“Fashionistas in this part of the world are style mavericks. They know what they like...”

Do you have any expectations, or how do you hope your e-boutique will be perceived in the region? E-commerce is growing exponentially in this part of the world and consumers in the MENA are demanding quality websites and technologies catered for their needs. As regional websites and e-commerce services become more tailored and refined, we think there will be a move away from the international shopping websites and a desire to shop more from local sites. Tell us about the regional fashion scene… what do you think is important to fashionistas in this part of the world? Fashionistas in this part of the world are style mavericks. They know what they like, are ahead of the fashion game and make choices based on what suits their lifestyles. We think the girls in this part of the world are beautifully groomed and intelligent dressers. Where do you see the business in a year’s time? We would love to keep growing and ensure that every woman and man has a swimsuit from Maison du Maillot in his or her beach wardrobes! We currently don’t have plans to open a physical boutique… but you never know, perhaps a pop up shop would be a next step. GO: Shop Maison du Maillot at www.maisonmaillot.com

Chef Sandro Gamba

Exquisite seafood and fine dining at its best, that’s what you’ll find in Sayad Restaurant at Emirates Palace. FACT went to meet Executive Chef, Sandro Gamba, to witness first-hand the culinary delights he and his team produce for guests…

fact magazine .75

After decades of experience working in the food and hospitality industry, if there’s one thing that Executive Chef Sandro Gamba knows about, it’s cooking grade-A cuisine to please every palate. We met with the man who is responsible for looking over all the food outlets in the stunning Emirates Palace, to sample some of the best at the award-winning Sayad restaurant. “The way I cook is more and more edging towards traditional,” says Chef Sandro. “It’s more important for me to go to a market, talk to the supplier, or talk to the farmer, and then buy my supplies.” His authentic approach to cooking is immediately illustrated with the first dish that is served up to us; Baked Chioggia Beets with pink grapefruit, orange brulee, and smoked-spiced yogurt made from creamy goats cheese. Presentation alone gets us excited (there’s a pop of colour everywhere you look on the plate!). The dish tastes healthy and light, and all the different components add to the delicious amalgamation of texture; from crispy to creamy – this is certainly a winning starter. Next up on the menu is UAE Raised Sturgeon Fish Vine Blanc, with young vegetables and Imperial Yasa Caviar. Chef Sandro advises that Abu Dhabi boasts a great Sturgeon farm where the fish is locally sourced. “The talent of my dishes is

always the produce,” he says proudly. Bursting with earthy, garden colours, this main is simply refreshing. The fish is beautifully cooked and well complemented by the caviar, with a subtle lemon flavour topping off the tasty mouthful. One of the standout components on the plate is the purple potatoes (yes, you heard!), and the veggies, including snow peas, baby fennel and fava beans, which are the perfect match for the Sturgeon fish.

CHEF’S TABLE

Chef Sandro has been cooking since his early teens and his culinary journey has taken him all over the world, from working with a two-star Michelin chef in the South of France, to opening restaurants for Park Hyatt Chicago and Four Seasons Los Angeles, and being responsible for all food outlets for the Sofitel hotel group. So, what keeps him excited about cooking? “People,” he says. “People, working with my team, working special events for clients, and meeting people.” With that said, we move on to dessert. Technique and knowledge of food comes naturally to Chef Sandro as driving does to a professional car racer. His flair for knowing which flavours to put together is brought to light when he hands each of us half a strawberry topped with a basil leaf, and says, “allow me to change your life!” And it did! The dessert is a Strawberry Fusion made up of Yuzu espuma, fresh strawberries and basil spigs in a chocolate shell. We end our visit with a dessert that is bursting with beautiful flavour – strawberry and basil – who would have thought? It’s fresh and sweet, and we can’t think of a better way to finish off the tasting! There’s no doubt that we will return for more.

Intimate and welcoming, 55&5th is St.Regis Saadiyat Island Resort’s signature food venue. FACT went along to see what an evening dinner at this exceptional grill and lounge has in store for guests...…

80. fact magazine

The St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort has many a wow-factor, from a stunning beachside location and picturesque sea views, to excellent guest accommodation. The resort’s dining options are no exception. Intimate, dim-lit, with elegant high ceilings and stylish chandeliers, 55&5th, The Grill is a classic grill and lounge venue serving a fabulous menu using fresh produce sourced from all over the world. We are led to one of the round (and very comfy!) private booths on the restaurant floor – an ideal choice for a romantic meal

out, or even for a group of close friends. 55&5th boasts a terrace area and a private dining room, which also doubles as a large rustic-style area where a huge selection of vino is stored. We’re handed our tailor-made tasting menu, which features elements of dishes that will soon be added to the venue’s upcoming menu. We brace ourselves when we learn that it’s going to be an eight-course dinner! On the menu is; Oyster Rockefeller (Fine de Claire oyster, creamed spinach

ON THE MENU

and Noilly Prat air); Egg Custard Royale (with sweet corn and duck ham); Classic Tartar (Tenderloin, gherkin, capers, shallots, anchovies and Dijon mustard); Dashi Broth (“Ichiban Dashi”, shaved wagyu, wakame, sous vide quail egg, dehydrated shallot and shimiji); Turbot (in brioche, scallop mousse, Japanese artichoke and Alba truffles); Squab Pigeon (Chamomile smoked breast, leg pastille, puffed barley and red cabbage); Wagyu Striploin Grade 9+ (Potato espuma, braised shallots and pomme berny); and last, but not at all the least, Soufflé (Chocolate, berries and salted caramel). How’s that for foodie frenzy? You too can enjoy a tailor-made tasting menu by arranging a ‘chef ’s table’ visit beforehand. Now, let’s talk food. If you’ve never had Oysters before, then this appetiser is the perfect intro to this seafood delicacy. It’s fresh, full of delicious herbs and topped off with Parmesan foam (much to our delight!). What we loved about dish number two is the innovative presentation and cooking techniques; the custard filling inside the egg had a similar texture to scrambled egg (without the smell!) but was in fact made from sweet corn and cream. The tartar is soft and well complemented by the Dijon mustard, followed by slow cooked quail egg on a bed of wagyu – the flavours here are quite impressive. The Turbot is light and fluffy, and for someone who isn’t a fan of the acquired truffle taste, here we didn’t mind it at all! The pigeon dish is an absolute standout with the camomile-cured sauce being the key component. Of course, we were eagerly awaiting the star of the food show and a staple of any good grill – the steak!

Might we say, it was well worth the wait with a beautiful smoky undertone and an exquisitely smooth potato puree, all creating a deep flavour. Dessert was, as expected, the cherry (or in this case, the chocolate and berries!) on top of a fabulous evening meal. It’s obvious that 55&5th is more than just your classic grill and lounge – it’s fine dining teamed with bespoke service, and incredibly friendly and knowledgeable staff (the sommelier was exceptionally helpful!). We left with big smiles, full bellies, and conversation about plans for our next visit!

relax: Beach Sunseeker’s Ground

What’s more perfect than a white sand beach and lush greenery to escape the bustle of the city? If you’re staying at the Shangri-La hotel for the weekend, and getting your fix of vitamin D is top of the agenda, look no further than the sprawling private beach dotted with comfy sunbeds. There are also a number of pools to choose from, all surrounded by beautiful palm trees and perfectly mowed green grass; in simple terms, a completely serene setting where you can unwind with a glass of something cold! You can hop on the hotel’s traditional Arabic boats, abras, transporting you around the winding waterway to the adjoining souk (how cool is that?). If you’ve already spent the day sightseeing or shopping, take a front row seat to an exotic sunset with magnificent views of Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque over the canal’s glittering waters – now, how’s that for a stunning end to the day?

Foodie Favourite

Shang Palace Restaurant 86. fact magazine

As far as food goes, the Shangri-La has much to offer to even the pickiest of foodies. Opt for the hotel’s signature restaurant, Shang Palace, and pamper your palate with authentic Chinese cuisine in a laid back, traditionally decorated venue. We order an absolute classic – duck in spicy chilli sauce with crunchy vegetables and XO seafood fried rice; perfectly cooked and infused with flavour and textures, this was a winning choice. It wasn’t long before the ‘masked dancer’ arrived – yes, you heard – dressed in traditional attire with a mask that flipped to something different, every time he did a complicated move, this unusual form of entertainment added real spark to the evening dinner. It’s safe to say that a stay at the Shangri-La would be incomplete without a meal at Shang Palace.

HOTEL HOTSPOT

CHI, The Spa Time to Unwind

On arrival at CHI, The Spa, you’re immediately overcome with a feeling of Zen; the neutral and deep-hued décor, low lighting, and aromatherapy smells give a calming illusion. On first impressions, you’ll see that Shangri-La has successfully managed to blend its signature Asian style with local Arabic influence and offer a Far East meets Middle East sanctuary. We experienced the glorious ancient therapy of the Hammam topped off with an Asian Blend full body massage, each lasting 60 minutes. The knowledgeable staff and therapists were attentive and informative throughout the treatments – did you know that black soap is fantastic to remove dead skin cells? (You do now!). All the spa treatments are based on authentic natural healing methods found in many Asian cultures. This was two hours of pure rejuvenation for the mind and body – highly recommended!

Stay: HORIZON CLUB Deluxe room

Home Comforts

They had us at ‘each of the 214 rooms feature a balcony or terrace with a breathtaking view of the canal’ – but then we walked into the Horizon Club Deluxe Room and were more than impressed with the elegant archways and Arabian architectural flare, from the sophisticated bathroom style to the comfortable bedroom, and the picturesque balcony. This room type is particularly great for a weekend break because it comes with homely features and added benefits. You get a personal concierge service, 24-hour butler service, and personalised in-room check-in and check-out. But, best of all, for us, was the complimentary afternoon tea and canapés in the Horizon Club lounge – a welcomed respite to snack and chill out from sunbathing! The furnishings are contemporary, the exclusive privileges abundant, and the staff incredibly helpful. If that wasn’t enough you have everything from a safe, a well-stocked mini bar, and even a stationery box (yes, there’s a stapler and sharpener too!). We’re not big on clichés but this room choice can only, rightly, be described as ‘a home away from home’. fact magazine .87

BODY BLISS

City life can take its toll on the best of us, and taking some me time is always great for a refreshing fix. This month, FACT’s Shabana Adam took a trip to ESPA at the RitzCarlton Abu Dhabi, Grand Canal to see if her relaxation needs could be fulfilled…

88. fact magazine

T

he Ritz-Carlton Abu Dhabi, Grand Canal is not just a destination for a luxury getaway – it also boasts an impressive spa, ESPA. After being ushered from the main (and simply stunning) lobby, down to the Venetian Village area, I entered the spa, where friendly staff awaited. The serene atmosphere is a warm welcome to the two-level labyrinth of luxury within. I’m soon treated to saffroninfused tea whilst filling out the pretreatment form. As of right now, feeling more than ready for the 120-minute ESPA Body Ritual, I whizz through the questions; any allergies? ‘no’ box ticked; main reason for treatment – ‘relaxation’

box ticked. Yes, that’s what I need. To unwind for a couple of hours! I make my way through the sophisticated archways and wide corridors towards the changing rooms. Everything from the hangings on the wall, to the use of natural materials such as limestone, iridescent glass and brown onyx, reflect local traditions, beautifully. In fact, my therapist, Amy, is quick to explain that inspiration for the décor comes from the Bedouin culture.

GO: ESPA Body Ritual 120 minutes – AED720. For more information, or to make a reservation, email abudhabi.spa@ ritzcarlton.com or call 2818 8051.

The ESPA also has an incredible hammam. Here are just some of the great benefits of visiting a hammam...

01.

The combination of heat, steam, and aromatherapy helps to relieve stress, relax muscles, ease respiratory problems, and stimulate circulation.

02.

A hammam treatment deeply cleanses the skin, improving its tone and texture.

03.

Visiting hammams increases the nutritional cleansing process, energy levels, and mental clarity. The holistic environment also boosts general well-being.

04.

The steam in a hammam helps to open the pores and as a result the experience aids the body to rid itself of toxins.

After being enveloped in a fluffy brown robe and padding though to the intimate treatment room, Amy runs through the products she’ll be using and asks about my problem areas – “back” is my reply. “If you can please work out the muscle tension in my back, that would be great!” e begin with a body exfoliation, where Amy uses an ESPA exfoliating brush and body polish, gently sweeping the skin neck-totoe. This refines, nourishes and smoothens the skin, cleaning away any dull cells (I definitely needed this!) and allowing the revitalised skin to peek through. Next up is a marine algae wrap, where I’m wrapped in thin plastic (literally!) and left to lie in a cocoon of relaxation, as Amy begins a gentle scalp massage using one of the best ESPA products – Pink Hair and Scalp Mud – trust me, it’s heavenly! After the wrap has worked it’s magic, I’m made to rinse off in the adjoining shower room (oh, did I mention, this treatment room is insanely large, yet perfectly private!). By this point I’m feeling refreshed and my skin is silky

W

smooth – all prepped for the tailor-made aromatherapy massage. Using ESPA’s Fitness Body Oil, I opted for the muscle relaxer massage with medium pressure. Amy begins the massage and instantly the pressure lifts, alleviating tension to melt away all problems. The massage is intensely healing and deeply relaxing (I did manage to fall into a light sleep!) but also leaves your muscles feeling renewed, and it’s impossible not to feel lighter on your feet. To top off the treatment I’m guided to the relaxation room and given cardamom tea, and time to gather my thoughts before heading back out into the city bustle. All in all a treatment that’s well-suited to any busy bodies who need to slow down and relax – don’t forget to enjoy the pristine beach, outdoor swimming pool, and other exclusive access to facilities such as the sauna and steam room too!

Antonio Fernandez Restaurant Manager at Holiday In Abu Dhabi

city insider

Tell us three things you enjoy the most about living in Abu Dhabi…

What has been your most exciting moment working with Holiday Inn Abu Dhabi?

The thing I love the most in Abu Dhabi is being given the chance to discover rich and delicious plates that enrich my palate! The second thing I love about Abu Dhabi is that it’s a city where there is a perfect balance between tradition and modern living. Finally, it is the chance to meet, share and work with people from different cultures.

I can recall many exciting moments from working in this wonderful IHG property but the most exciting part is when our guests tell us that they have enjoyed dinner at the Lemon Tree and continue to commend the hotel, saying that the Holiday Inn Abu Dhabi has been one of the best hotels to stay in.

90. fact magazine

Name your three favourite dining spots in the city?

Well of course the first one would be the Lemon Tree. I say this not because I work here but because I genuinely believe the food here is great and the guests say so too! A second nice spot is Cho Gao, at the Crowne Plaza Abu Dhabi. The Thai food is full of nice flavours. The third one is Barouk, at the Crown Plaza Yas Island, where it’s a complete Arabic fanfare.
