Founded by Abu Dhabi-based Fashion Designer Searina Abdel Kader, The Station was created to offer a completely unique fashion and lifestyle experience in the capital, through a well-balanced mix of designers, brands, and engaging spaces. Her dream was to create an event that didn’t have simply commercial objectives in mind, but rather to support up-and-coming talent by giving them a platform to sell and showcase their brands. The name reflects the concept as the word “station” refers to a place where a train would usually stop along a railway line, and reflects a temporary transition in one’s life, or it can also be interpreted as the experiential end destination.

80 days, 120 venues, 120 meals, zero added kilos – an epic foodie and charity challenge by FACT CEO Greg Hughes…

If you were a little confused by our cover this month, then perhaps this will clear it up for you. Last year’s inaugural FACT Dining Awards in Abu Dhabi was a lot of fun. Perhaps the most fun was the 120 Venue Selfie Challenge, which quite literally put the team in every nominated venue in a single day in one epic endurance 11-hour road trip the length and breadth of Abu Dhabi. To take things a step further this year, FACT CEO Greg Hughes is eating a meal at every single nominated venue before the awards ceremony on April 19. Now before you think Greg is just using this as an excuse to eat the finest food in the capital, you’ll be happy to know that for every venue he ticks off the list, he is donating AED100 to charity. He will also be asking every venue to match his donation. The charity involved is the Pink Caravan, a breast cancer awareness initiative, and you can find out more about on the following pages. Greg loves his food, but he is already suffering from post-Christmas kilos and doesn’t want to put on any weight during this challenge. So much so that he started the challenge with a weigh-in on January 25. If on the day of the Fact Dining Awards he weighs more than his starting weight of 86.5kg, Greg is personally donating a further AED5000 to a local charity. We talk to Greg below and find our how the 120 Venue Challenge experience is going so far. Greg updates everyone with images of every meal he eats on Twitter at @FactAwardsAD. Let the food odyssey commence! 44

FACT: So how challenging can it possibly be eating all of this awesome food? Massive hardship right? Greg: I detect a note of sarcasm there! Sure it is an amazing experience, but so far I have eaten at 42 restaurants in 26 days and have 78 more to go. Its’ relentless… relentlessly amazing, I guess! FACT: Part of the challenge is, of course, trying to finish weighing less than you started, or else pay an extra AED5000 to charity, so, how’s that working out for you? Greg: I’d rather not talk about it... One thing I will say is that digital scales are a farce; the discrepancies between different ones are ridiculous. Yesterday I weighed myself on one scale to find it reading 85.5kg, and I couldn’t believe it because my clothes are definitely tighter, I found another a few minutes later and it read 88.8kg! I think the latter is more accurate, I’m afraid. FACT: Would you like one of these cupcakes? Greg: Crazy thing is, all these meals have sent my appetite into overdrive, so don’t tempt me... FACT: How has the response been from the nominated venues you’ve visited? Greg: Incredible, in some cases I have been treated like royalty. To be honest though, these venues treat all their customers amazingly well. As I’ve been dining alone on most occasions, some standout members of staff (you know who you are!) have taken pity on me and kept me company - thanks so much. FACT: What are your impressions of the venues you’ve visited so far? Greg: Having spent so much time in Abu Dhabi I really felt I knew the scene and my overall impression was that it was similar to Bahrain or Doha where I have spent many years of my life. I was wrong, the amount of top class outlets in Abu Dhabi is higher and the number of dining districts has exploded over the last few years. FACT: Go on, have a cupcake! Greg: Go away! Leave me alone. ✤

Big Screen Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice What’s it about: We’re in Metropolis and the battle of the heroes is on as Batman takes on Superman, fearing that some actions are going unchecked. Whilst they’re busy fighting, Lex Luthor creates a new threat – Doomsday – and the two heroes are forced to work together to save the city.

Director: Zack Snyder cast: Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Amy Adams Why it’s worth watching? This film, or more so the concept, has been a long time coming. The project was first announced at San Diego Comic Con in 2013, and it has since been developed by a mega-talented team. You’ve got Man of Steel director, Zack Snyder at the helm and with the help of The Dark Knight and Argo screenwriters – David Goyer and Chris Terrio, respectively – it’s no wonder that Warner is nervous about the $400 million plus spend on the film. And we haven’t even got to the cast list yet. Money aside, the plot pits DC Comics’ three biggest heroes against each other, and the story is expected to lay groundwork for multiple DC films, including a Justice League movie. For us, if it lives up to the high standard of any DC Comics’ TV shows (hello, Arrow and The Flash fans) then Warner will be laughing all the way to the bank. If not, we’ll probably just like it for the beautiful cast parading in superhero outfits.

Highlights “For us, if it lives up to the high standard of any DC Comics’ TV shows (hello, Arrow and The Flash fans) then Warner will be laughing all the way to the bank.”

The Brothers Grimsby What’s it about: Two brothers are adopted by different families when they’re young – one turns out to be MI6’s greatest spy, whilst the other is a football frenzy doofus with nine children. When they’re reunited after 28 years, the super serious secret spy is forced to work with the soccerloving simpleton on a dangerous plot.

“Aaah, classic SBC comedy with just the right amount of crude one-liners and awkward, sarcastic moments.” – The Brothers Grimsby

Director: Louis Leterrier cast: Sacha Baron Cohen, Mark Strong, Rebel Wilson Why it’s worth watching? How much do you love Sacha Baron Cohen? He was Ali G, he was Borat, and now, he’s Nobby – a football mad dad with everything that a man from the poor English fishing town of Grimsby could want – nine children and the most attractive girlfriend in north England (Rebel Wilson). Imagine, that character positioned next to the world’s greatest spy, Agent Grim (Mark Strong) and the two of them working on a plan to save the world. The Rose of Tibet By Lionel Davidson

HIP-HOP

T.L.O.P THE LIFE OF PABLO By Kanye West

Even though it was pulled from being released on Apple Music, it’s SO worth getting your hands on Yeezy’s new record. Whether you love him, hate him, think he’s a little eccentric, or that he’s the biggest celebrity snob (let’s be honest, Kanye is his own biggest marketing tool, positive and negative) it’s undeniable that Kanye makes good music. His previous albums, Yeezus, gave this one plenty to live up to. Thankfully, T.L.O.P aka The Life of Pablo is a solid follow-up; Wolves is a bass-filled, chilledout track featuring vocals from Sia and Vic Mensa, whereas Fade is a complete 180 - upbeat and much more punchy. No More Parties in LA is a favourite from the album, taking us back to Yeezy’s original sound and showcasing his lyricism, perfectly. After much hype, and a Twitter spat with Wiz Khalifa (we have an inkling it was a publicity stunt), we’re happy to say that this album was entirely worth the long, long wait.

POP I Like It When You Sleep For You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware of It

After the disappearance of his brother during a filming expedition near Mount Everest, Charles Whittington takes a dangerous and illegal journey from India to Tibet in the hope of finding his sibling. Along the way he encounters a woman with a deadly secret which sees the novel take a thrilling turn. The Rose of Tibet is Lionel Davidson’s second novel, although you would never believe it; he writes with the experience of a seasoned novelist, yet keeps the flare and excitement that comes with a junior such as himself. This has to be one of the best thrillers we’ve encountered this year!

By The 1975 After a slightly confusing Twitter post last year instigating that the band were about to part ways (thankfully a huge misunderstanding!) The 1975 is back with a new album and a new sound. Yes, it’s the longest album name ever, and the music is just as catchy. Love Me and UGH! are firmly pop records, rather than the heavy guitar sounds that we were used to from the previous album, and has plenty of psychedelic elements throughout. Although, The

our favourite from the album as it’s full of guitar

If the name Shay Butler rings a bell, it’s probably because you’ve come across it on YouTube. By 30, Shay weighed 300lbs and decided to get in shape and document his 100lb weight loss on YouTube. In this book, he tackles the debate of whether a parent’s weight issue is mirrored in their children by documenting a 30-day weight-loss and fitness regime taken on by both him and his eldest son in order to maintain his new weight and help improve his son’s health. Both funny and compelling, this account shows it’s never too late to change your eating habits.

and familiar riffs taking us right back to The 1975 we know and love. With their new sound, this might be their make or break album, and although we’re fans, we have to say that we can’t help but wish they’d injected a little more of their original style back into their new work.

“Yes, it’s the longest album name ever, and the music is just as catchy.”

M

y first glimpse of Zanzibar was from the panoramic front window of the 12-seater Cessna I had boarded several hours prior in the Serengeti. I had dozed off while we were still flying low over the endless muted green plains dotted with wildlife, trying to ignore the fact that the pilot seemed more interested in eating the pizza he had brought along than commandeering the plane. As we neared the islands of Zanzibar, the utterly contrasting landscape shook me awake quickly as we circled over a glittering aquamarine ocean speckled by lush green islands and ringed by glowing white beaches. Shallow sandbars made the water seem translucent even from such a distance and it looked as though the hype was all true. This was a veritable paradise. But lest we not forget that we were indeed in the tropics, we emerged from the plane into a blazing afternoon sun and oppressive humidity, and were ushered into an unenclosed airport that did little to shelter us from the ruthless heat. Left to collect our bags from the tarmac and navigate a somewhat worryingly laissez faire passport check, we set off to find our transportation to Nungwi beach on the Northern tip of the island. Nungwi is famed for its pristine beaches and laid back vibe and we were certainly ready for some relaxation after an exhausting safari. We climbed into a comfortable, air conditioned van and began the one hour drive to our new temporary home, the Doubletree by Hilton Resort Zanzibar – Nungwi. From behind a wall of glass, we observed snapshots of life in Zanzibar. Despite an afternoon heat that should have paralysed the streets, they were filled with undulating energy. Indeed, as elsewhere in Africa, life takes place not behind the closed doors and isolated spaces that a person stakes out as their own, but on the streets, which belong to everyone. We passed teeming roadside villages and small fishing settlements, lush palm plantations, a frenzy of tropical growth spotted with wandering cows and goats and groups of barefoot children. ➝

Everywhere, people merge with cars in a dizzying and dangerous manoeuvring. Colourful open-air minibuses whiz by, limbs practically spilling out of the wooden slats. Traffic sways, car horns and shouting and music jumble together, roadside crowds bustle in and out of countless half crumbled shops, their wares spilling out into the road. Women walk by, swaying in colourful abayas with baskets and jugs balanced effortlessly on their heads and babies slung on their backs. Life here is rippling and never ceasing. We would later walk these streets and feel the pull of it, the sheer intoxication of being caught up and spun around in such an overwhelming of the senses. The Doubletree by Hilton Zanzibar - Nungwi The Doubletree by Hilton Zanzibar Nungwi provided the perfect base for both a heady and relaxing experience, located in the middle of a local fishing village and surrounded by lush greenery and a stunning beach. After such a stimulating drive, we were almost disappointed to reach the hotel, but as we walked into the grassy courtyard fringed with blooming bougainvillea and tall palm trees, we were struck by yet another contrasting sensation – serenity. The resort is styled with simple and traditional architecture, low slung white buildings with traditional makuti palm leaf roofs and interspersed with trails through abundant greenery. After a seamless and friendly check-in (complete with the signature and very delicious Doubletree cookies), we were taken to our beach front room, overlooking the Indian Ocean. The spacious room was decorated in Zanzibari fashion with lazily swirling handmade ceiling fans, and comfortable wooden furniture. The tide was in and dozens of traditional fisherman’s dhows bobbed gently in the water. An exotic fruit plate greeted us, which we enjoyed from the wicker chairs on our private balcony just meters away from the beach. It took only moments of settling in to realize that Zanzibar is a place where time stretches and melts without shape or tempo – where days drag on and you quickly lose perspective, where you can be free to do anything you want to do, when you want to do it.

62

fact magazine

And there is plenty to do at the resort – from enjoying the peaceful and breezy spa, to lounging by the spacious pool with lounge chair service and a well-stocked pool bar, to enjoying one of the two exceptional restaurants. But the leading attraction of the Doubletree by Hilton Zanzibar - Nungwi is its location, right on the endless Nugwi beach. This was undoubtedly a high point in our days, walking from the hotel along an infinite powdery white sand beach in either direction, passing small fishing villages, markets selling everything from seashells and fish to any useless trinket one could possibly imagine. Charming beach bars and guest houses line the beach, and you won’t see much in the way of modern architecture. You will pass by local women collecting shells, impromptu football matches, and youngsters darting in and out of the water. Here, you will mix with just about every type of person you can image, from tourists, to laid back locals, to the expats who came here looking for a simpler life. People are happy, approachable, and one is instantly at ease. It feels like a place where you belong. And indeed this is the highlight of the resort – it’s immersion with the surroundings, the chance to bump up against and mesh with the life of this island. Days at the Doubletree by Hilton Zanzibar - Nungwi are characterised by these long strolls, sun, lazy waves, endless beaches, bright smiles, and interspersed with the wide variety of activities on offer and arranged by the very helpful staff. Zanzibar offers world class diving and snorkelling, opportunities to swim with whale sharks, and just about every water sport you could imagine. We tried out two of the adventures on offer, a jet ski safari that skirted smaller islands in the archipelago for two hours, offering stunning scenery and nature untouched by human habitation. I also opted for a horse tour of the east coast of the island, which has fewer hotels and tourist establishments and is a wonderful way to observe rural life. On this ride, I also got the rare opportunity to swim in the sea with the horses, an unforgettable and exhilarating experience. Our perfect beach days were ended with delectable seafood dinners at the Doubltree by Hilton Zanzibar – Nungwi’s restaurants. ➻

Of special note was Fisherman Bar & Grill, the signature seafood venue located right on the beach and featuring a superb menu, and offering shisha on the beach to round off dinner. Nightlife options were a short walk down the beach, where you could find anything from laid back expat bars with live music from local musicians, to pulsing outdoor clubs playing Afrobeats. Doubletree by Hilton Zanzibar - Nungwi also holds true to the brand’s core values by supporting the local community. Although a poor country, tourism has bolstered Zanzibar’s economy and from all accounts, often positively affects locals in terms of job opportunities. Of course, as in many conservative societies, tourism has been controversial in terms of its effects on local culture and the exposure it creates to less traditional values and mores. It is nice to see the Hilton recognising this and making an effort by hosting local musicians, performers and artists weekly at the property alongside a beach BBQ.

fter a relaxing few days lounging in Nugwi, we moved on to Stone Town – the cultural capital of Zanzibar, an Arabic style city that seems sculpted out of white stone. Despite its bright exterior and sunny beach front setting, Stone Town has a dark, but intriguing past that has made it one of the most unique places in the world today. The city was first inhabited by only the indigenous peoples of the islands, but in the 7th century was settled by Muslim immigrants from Iran. Next came the Indian traders, the Portuguese colonists, and finally, the Arab conquerors from the Arabian Gulf who would rule Zanzibar for 260 years. They were joined by enterprising Europeans, who treated Zanzibar as a British protectorate and under whom the island ran a flourishing trade, in exotic spices, gold, and most troublingly, in slaves from the African interior. Later, after overthrowing the Sultan, Zanzibar became a part of Tanzania. For centuries, the archipelago has played host to foreigners stopping by to restock or relax. It was famously a starting point for excursions into the African mainland, and its streets inspired many notable poets and writers. 64

fact magazine

With so much history and varying influences over the years, we could not help but be overwhelmed by the heady mix of sights, sounds, smells, and languages as we wandered through Stone Town. The city is filled with what once must have been grand houses, now marked by peeling pastel paint and a decaying opulence that is somehow irresistibly charming. Stone Town is composed of a labyrinth of alleyways that twist and turn unexpectedly and are lined with a never ending procession of curio shops, people lazing in doorways, and elaborately carved wooden doors that were erected over centuries, each symbolising the people who tried to make this island their own. Somehow, these dizzying passageways all lead to a wide, palm fringed boulevard that opens onto the sea, and features somewhat unkempt, albeit impressive landmarks such as the old fort and the house of wonders, which was the first house in Africa to boast an elevator. The only way to see Stone Town is on foot, to wander and get lost in the magical disorder as you no doubt will. I think that each traveller here will have a different experience, see different things, but will nonetheless feel a mysterious pull drawing you down every alley and around every corner, tugging you inside countless shops filled with charming treasures and intriguing personalities The Doubletree by Hilton, Zanzibar Stone Town The Doubletree by Hilton, Zanzibar - Stone Town sits in the heart of this urban confusion, a restored historical building not reachable by car. After a brief wander through the maze of narrow streets, the warmly lit building suddenly looms in front of you. Everything in this place is surreal, almost enchanted. The hotel is beautiful, with tasteful touches and local décor, warm and serene and yet it feels as though you are right in the middle of the action. The building has kept its original carved wooden door and brass ceiling lamps. It is clean and modern, but not sterile, with outstanding service and a location that could not possible be beat in Stone Town. The absolute highlight of the hotel was the rooftop terrace. ➻

The building is slightly taller than most of the buildings in Stone Town, and the terrace offers panoramic views of colourful roofs and vibrant buildings, surrounded by the sea on both sides. The rooftop restaurant, Taarab, is one of the premier dining destinations in Stone Town, no easy feat, and should not be missed. The food, particularly the seafood, is incredibly fresh and beautifully seasoned, and Taarab also offers an impressive breakfast buffet and a prime spot for a sundowner and shisha with a view. Regrettably, after a trip that was both lively and peaceful, we made our way back to the UAE, thinking that although we may have only had a glimpse into the mosaic that is life in Zanzibar, here is a place where we felt we could truly grasp the genuine experience that we had travelled to Africa to find. We had wanted to feel the pulse of life, touch something raw, unrefined, unpackaged, reconnect to a simpler way. We wanted to get away from fast

food logos and sterilisation and shiny glass facades and we were tired of the cultural zoos and staged experiences on display in most places we travel to. Of course, it is presumptuous and perhaps controversial to say one wants an ‘authentic’ experience out of travel. What is authenticity anyway? Do us relatively well-off travellers just seek to go to a place that has yet to benefit from modernity, to gape at poverty and simplicity, and marvel at the ‘preservation of culture?’ Is it just snobbery, patronisation to romanticise a life of hardship when we don’t actually have to live it and likely never will? Perhaps, but in a world full of people with the means to travel, better transport networks and fewer political obstacles to cross borders, we have started to crave something out of the way, different. It seems that we all live in mass produced, homogenous societies and so maybe when we say we want authenticity, we just mean that we want to a new experience, a new perspective. That we don’t want to spend our vacations in an air conditioned

shopping mall or in an enclosed resort that might as well be in Dubai. In Zanzibar, it would certainly be easy to stay walled off in such a resort, lying comatose on a lounge chair in the sun all day, and you will no doubt find many tourists there doing just that. However, if you so wish, getting off the beaten track and experiencing the ‘real’ Zanzibar is incredibly easy and entirely safe, and importantly, you can do it on your own. And Zanzibar will teach you that perhaps there is no such thing as an authentic experience, with the blended and fused cultures of the world today, but that this entangling can creative a beautiful and unique experience of its own. It creates a place that is not as you think it should be, but exists as it chooses to be, unapologetically, soaking in everything and everyone that reaches its sandy shores. As has been said, Zanzibar is truly a place where you can meet half the world. ✤ GO: 12. Visit www.doubletree3.hilton.com for reservations and more information. fact magazine

This is below the Super Series, boasting the 650S and 675LT, and the Ultimate Series consisting solely of the mighty P1. Now, when we say ‘entry-level’, don’t take that to mean ‘cheap’ or ‘boring’. The biggest mistake you could make when looking at this car is to consider it a ‘baby McLaren’. We’re still talking about a AED750,000 vehicle here, with a mighty 3.8l twin-turbo V8 with 570PS (562hp) and 600Nm torque. You’re also looking at a 0-100km/h time of 3.2 seconds (only 0.2 slower than the 650S), a 0-200km/h time of 9.5 seconds, and a top speed of 328km/h. These figures put the 570S on a par with the likes of the Lamborghini Huracan, the Porsche

CITY RIDES

911 Turbo S or the Audi R8 V10. So as you can see, a ‘baby’ it is not… So what does one do when one is handed the keys to a McLaren in the UAE? Well, one takes a drive up one of the world’s best new roads, doesn’t one? So, off to Jebel Jais it was, and a glorious twisting mountain road that snakes its way up towards the country’s highest point on a rainy, misty day that lent some sense of drama to the occasion. Though a little more concentration was needed on the slightly damp road, in the 570S it felt truly enjoyable, and not at all scary. It doesn’t have the furious, blistering speed of the 650S, granted, but don’t for a second think it’s a soft touch either. The 570S is seriously fast, but in a way that is manageable. With the 650S, as capable as it was, with that kind of ferocious power, you kind of felt like you were hanging on for dear life. The 570S, on the other hand, is more accessible to the layman, with enough power to thrill, and take you to the outer limits of your comfort zone, but never beyond into the dark regions of terror! Amazingly, despite the fact that the 570S now features more conventional springs and roll-bar suspension rather than the interlinked hydraulic suspension as seen on the 650, it still has the almost supernatural agility, balance and precision of its elder sibling – it is still a McLaren, after all – and this allows you to really extract the utmost from the roaring V8. The difference comes in laying down the power on the exits. It only took a very short time for me to decide I wasn’t man enough for the 650S on track mode (no ESC). The 570S, on the other hand, was far more within my skill set, and flooring the throttle and correcting the power slides with a flick of the wheel became almost a routine, albeit a hugely exhilarating one. Like the 650S, it also features excellently weighted hydraulic steering with good feedback that gives you almost cerebral control over the car. It’s just awesome, awesome fun. ➻

CITY RIDES

Not every day involves a mountain drive, though, so how is the 570 on normal roads? In our humble opinion, the 570S is better as a daily driver than the 650S, as the interior is that little bit more accommodating, and they’ve cut a section out of the carbon tub to allow for easier ingress/egress. It’s also got a new ‘hanging’ centre console instead of the ‘flying’ one, which 72

fact magazine

has a gap in the middle so that you can access the cup holders more easily, rather than having to reach awkwardly around the back of the one in the 650S. The Iris infotainment system has been improved slightly, and works better than it ever has before, and the new completely digital instrument cluster looks superb, changing configuration depending which settings you have the car in.

Overall, the 570S feels more usable than the 650S in almost every way, even though it also feels less extreme in every way as well. If you’re looking for that vicious thrill that only a supercar can give you, the 650S is what you want. However, if you’re looking for an awesome sports car that can realistically function as a daily driver, then the 570S is small compromise! ✤

LISTEN UP

App-licious Today’s tech-savvy generation of smartphones and tablets means the world is at your fingertips, literally! FACT has three great apps to download for your device, keeping you plugged-in to all the best techie help for every area of life...

The Room 3 The third installment of this superb puzzle game, The Room 3 boasts the same intricate mind-bending puzzles, excellent animation, eerie ambiance and mysterious storyline as the first two. However, this time the developers have taken things a step further, with alternate storyline endings depending on certain choices you make throughout the game. For newbies, the premise is that you’re sucked into the magical world of the Craftsman, who has devised a series of diabolically complicated puzzle machines you must solve to progress and escape. If you’re hearing about this game for the first time, the best news is that there are three versions for you to get stuck into. The worst news is that you can kiss goodbye to any free moments you have in your life for the next month or so… Each one will cost you a few bucks, but the five-star reviews in each case should convince you that they’re worth the money.

Kitchen Stories A must for foodies, Kitchen Stories is an app that boasts everything you need to improve your cooking skills and general knowledge about food, cooking and cuisine around the world. It boasts a vast library of recipes with images and easy step-by-step instructions. The app also allows you to automatically generate shopping lists based on recipe choice to plan meals easily, and there are even how-to videos to watch as well. New content is added constantly, so you’ll never run out of things to try, and it includes vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free recipes, as well as themes such as Smoothies and Grill Specials. The culinary world is truly your oyster! And the best thing about it? It’s free…

SimCity BuildIt The hugely popular city-building game comes to handheld devices with SimCity BuildIt. Fans of the franchise can now play the game on the go whenever you have a few free moments, and much of the PC’s game features are there. However, the downside is that adapting this notoriously resource-heavy game for smaller processors also means that many of the features are not. And, even though it has been simplified for the app, it still absolutely rinses processors and battery life. Upsides of the app is that it’s constantly updated with real-world relevant features such as Valentine’s Day, for example, enriching the experience significantly. It is still a highly enjoyable game, so just make sure you always have a charger handy, and get building.

Slinky Slip On

Rainbow Clashes

It may just be Spring’s most sensual suggestion, taking lingerie out of the “underwear” category and onto the street as “outerwear” this season. That’s right, the slip dress is back and it’s slinkier, silkier and sultrier than ever. Some were trimmed and adorned with scalloped lace details, others carried a chiffon charm, while some designers went all-out with a layered look. This earthy elegant look was too good to sleep in, anyway. We welcome the slip on with open arms.

Vivid colours were all the fashion rage on the SS16 runways with sweet and sour shades being worked into a single look. Designers proposed their pantone hits in starburst and acid brights, some with graphic effects like patchwork details and others with the most revered design codes with clashing shards of fabrics to give a crash and repair attitude. Think dramatic fuchsia pinks, and deep oranges and purples!

Mirror Shine

Graphic Lines

SS16 fabrics are going to be shinier, brighter and cooler than ever before. Designers have tested the fashion waters with everything from embellished classic sweaters with broken mirror pieces, to futuristic ruched foil dresses, and grungy gowns. This look works best in the evening, when you can don the brightest sequins and full-on gem-stone shine for unapologetic glamour – go on, have your high-impact metallic moment.

The super stripe struck once more on the SS16 runways as a majority of designers went horizontal, vertical, thick and thin, experimenting with chopped, curled and scattered lines in many hues or monochromatic. The stripe proved to be oh so right as it emerged from the fray of Spring prints as a clear victor on the catwalks – this season, you’ll be hard-pressed to shop without seeing the sheer graphic appeal of a good striped design. Going Green

Oriental Influence

Bottle green, military green, paintbox brights, and shades of lime; in all its glory, green was all the rage on the men’s SS16 runway. There are no rules with this one – go delicately light, strongly bold, or mix and match layers of green for a trendy look. We’re thinking generously cut, well-tailored pieces like trousers, shirting and outerwear to nail the all-green style. Opt for pieces in sea and jade greens to keep your Spring wardrobe looking fresh.

This season saw designers looking eastward towards China and Japan for style influence, tapping into the rich aesthetic heritage of the two nations. Oriental prints and fabrics play an important role in relaxed styling, mixed with sportswear silhouettes like the bomber jacket in luxe fabrics and intricate embroidery. This is a unique and daring trend that, if worn right, could make you the showstopper in any fashion crowd.

Top Pockets

Psychedelic Style

For a more masculine military-inspired look, go for pocket detail this season. Pockets took centre stage and became the hallmark of function for Spring; you’ll find them on everything from the outside of coats and jackets, cargo pants, gilets and even tank suits, giving the illusion of an intrepid explorer while still actually being very practical. This is the fantastical man pocket - the perfect example of both style and substance.

Whether it’s prints, fabrics or colours, things got very vibrant on the men’s SS16 runways. Some designers referenced the 80s with bright “rave-ish” hues, while others went for straight up optical illusion prints and elegant botanical riffs. Wear this look head-to-toe for maximum impact or with either a smart waistcoat or tailored trousers for a high fashion look. For those who dare, try colour blocking with many tones for extra on-trend points. fact magazine

MEN Menswear moves forward in a boxy, utilitarian silhouette for Spring/Summer 2016 with H&M Studio. It’s about a refined sportiness for the urban explorer, with a fresh tailored mood that’s both smart and relaxed. The zip-up jacket is the new essential this season and utilitarian pockets are a crucial detail. Another staple is the resort shirt and double-pleat tailored pant, while the muted colour palette puts extra emphasis on the cut. Innovative fabrics look especially fresh when layered with classic cottons and linens, capturing the new take on classic menswear. Tailored trousers with deep double pleats are at the heart of the look. A wider leg and higher waist refresh the style and make them modern. Crisp woven t-shirts and sweatshirts are the perfect companion to the tailored trousers and technical shorts. Graphic architectural patterns are all the accents that are needed for the layered look. ✤ fact magazine

DUSIT THANI ABU DHABI: heaven on earth

fact magazine

95

The Dusit Thani Abu Dhabi, literally translated into “Heaven on Earth,” certainly has a lot to live up to with such a name, not to mention the high repute of Thai hospitality. fact went to stay at the hotel and was definitely impresed... Thailand has become a popular destination for Gulf residents, particularly in the last decade, no doubt due in large part to the friendly and welcoming spirit of the Thai people who take enormous pride in their culture of generosity. The Dusit Thani Abu Dhabi allows residents to experience some of this legendary Thai hospitality right in the heart of Abu Dhabi. Well aware of the company’s philosophy and Thai roots, our expectations were high as we prepared to spend a long weekend at the Dusit Thani Abu Dhabi. Upon entering the impressive lobby atrium (the third highest in the UAE), we were welcomed with a “wai” (the traditional Thai greeting)” and a warm smile, then served a refreshing beverage during a swift and personable check in. Making our way to the bullet lifts that lead to 402 luxury guest rooms, we were welcomed by name all around by staff with seemingly inexhaustible smiles. Although the lobby is impressive, it still manages to be warm and not intimidating, perhaps due to the traditional Thai touches and sounds scattered throughout the hotel, and put to particularly good use in the rooms. We spent the weekend in a Deluxe Room, however the Dusit Thani Abu Dhabi offers nine room types and apartments to suit any kind of traveller. The Deluxe Room is elegantly outfitted with floor to ceiling windows offering panoramic views of the city. There are tasteful hints of Thai décor throughout the room, which gave it distinctive character but was not overdone. The room offers complimentary internet, bottled water, and tea and coffee, and comes equipped with a work desk and ergonomic chair, satellite TV, a DVD player, in room safe, bed control panel, luxury bath amenities, and our personal favourite, a pillow menu for a perfect night’s sleep. ➻ 96

97

HOTEL HOTSPOT The bathroom is spacious and features both a tub and a rainforest shower, but the standout of the room is without a doubt the sweeping views and the abundant natural light, which left us feeling both as if we were in the middle of the action and yet profoundly relaxed. We were happy to find that with great dining options, a spa, and a beautiful rooftop pool, there was no need to step foot outside of the Dusit Thani Abu Dhabi, although it would make an ideal base for exploring the city. The hotel offers three main dining outlets, as well as a coffee shop, lounge, snack bar, and a poolside restaurant and bar offering up light and healthy options. Some of our faves: Benjarong, the chain’s signature restaurant serving authentic Thai food is largely regarded as one of the best Thai restaurants in the capital. It certainly never disappoints, and neither did the Capital Grill. It offers a sophisticated setting with a premium array of meat cuts, including a French cote de beouf not available elsewhere in the capital. One of the highlights of our stay was undoubtedly a visit to Namm Spa for a signature Thai massage. “Namm” is a Thai word that translated to “water,” embraced in ancient Thai medicine as the most essential element of life and a healing and rejuvenating force. Namm spa revolves around the concept of natural healing and wellbeing in a holistic manner, rather than just temporary stress relief, and this focus was evident in the treatment. The therapist was knowledgeable, highly skilled and delivered a personalised experience that was both relaxing and invigorating. A stay at the Dusit Thani Abu Dhabi wouldn’t be complete without relaxing by the rooftop pool, on the 23rd floor. The décor is chic and contemporary and the views of the city are breath taking, making it the perfect spot for a sundowner before facing the work week. All in all, we were most impressed with the service at the Dusit Thani Abu Dhabi, which truly exemplified the Thai roots. The Dusit Thani’s focus on the Siam Smile concept may seem arbitrary but it is truly amazing how a simple smile can brighten any experience and this was one of the hallmarks of the stay, plus luxury and impeccable service - not an easy combination to find executed, so well, in Abu Dhabi.✤ GO: Call (0)2 698 8888 or visit www.dusit.com for reservations and more information. 98

Flavours of Lebanon: A New Take on the Classics “From day one, we didn’t want to be just another Lebanese restaurant, competing with all the others in town. We wanted to take it to another level, and create a new concept in Lebanese cooking.”

– Executive Chef Danny Kattar fact magazine

CHEF’S TABLE

Byblos Sur Mer, at the InterContinental Abu Dhabi, offers something far beyond your standard Lebanese culinary experience, and it’s all thanks to Executive Chef Danny Kattar, who invited us to his dine at the restaurant for this month’s chef’s table…

Having lived in the Middle East for a significant number of years, we can say we’ve had our fair share of Lebanese food. With so many good Lebanese restaurants out there serving essentially the same food as each other, it takes something pretty special to make a particular one stand out in your mind as an excellent example of the cuisine. However, it takes something literally revolutionary to completely change the way you think about what Lebanese fine dining should be, and that is exactly what you will find at Byblos Sur Mer. “From day one, since the concept stage, we didn’t want to be just another Lebanese restaurant, competing with all the others in town. We wanted to take it to another level, and create a new concept in Lebanese cooking with our signature dishes,” Chef Danny explains. What this means, he says, is to take the much loved classics such as hummous, kibbeh, grilled meats, samke harra, and so on, and give them a whole new twist to offer something with familiar flavours, but a whole new experience. One example is the delicious Lebanese chutney that you’ll find adding a delicious sweetness to several of the signature dishes. “The flavours, like molasses, pomegranate, cherries and figs are wellknown in Lebanon, but what we’ve done is to create a chutney like one you’ll find in Asia, but in a Lebanese way.” Another example of a unique twist on a Lebanese classic is the delicious Open Kibbeh with Aleppo cherry, pine nuts and ground lamb, where you can simply just scoop out the filling if you like, or even the superb lobster kibbeh, which has to be tried for you to believe! 102 fact magazine

CHEF’S TABLE

Menu Open Kibbeh with Aleppo Cherry, Pine Nuts & ground Lamb. Samke Harra Traboulsi Mixed Grill Hummous

Then there’s a twist on another classic the Samke Harra Traboulsi. Samke Harra is more commonly found in the GCC with the Beiruti sauce, but the Traboulsi sauce is a more creamy type originating from Tripoli. Where Chef Danny makes it his own is when he bakes it in a pan sealed with a layer of plami bread dough, which traps in the flavours like the en papillote technique, and when it’s broken open on the table all the delicious scents burst out for the eager diners. It tastes spectacular. We could go on about everything else we tried, but there isn’t enough room here. We strongly encourage you to visit the restaurant yourselves, where you’ll find the venue bustling from patrons from across the GCC and beyond who are all in agreement: thus far, it has been an overwhelming success. “If you look at the menu you see all the classic dishes are there, but the majority of our customers so far never look at the regular menu anymore, they’ll only look at the signature menu,” Chef Danny says with a smile. And now we absolutely know why! ✤ GO: Byblos Sur Mer is located at InterContinental Abu Dhabi, open daily from 12noon for lunch and dinner. VENUE REVIEW

O

ne Saturday last month we were invited down to Fairmont Bab al Bahr for their newly launched Saturday Roast. The Roast used to take place in Marco Pierre White, but the hotel decided to move the event to CuiScene to broaden the selection and open things up to the outside terrace, and the effect has been to lighten the affair overall, and make it a bit more relaxed and casual. For those of you who are thinking that it’s simply a slightly scaled-down version of the Friday Brunch, well, you’re right to some extent. Gone are the pasta, foie gras and scallop stations, for example. It’s also a much more laid-back affair, without the well-lubricated revelry that usually accompanies a brunch. This is no bad thing, though, as on a Saturday you usually want to relax and prepare for the working week to come, and the chilledout vibe is perfect in that respect. And no-one is going to feel hard done-by with the spread that is still on offer – the selection is superb, with the sushi, the salads, the curries, the grills, the cheeses and the desserts all present, and there’s more of an emphasis placed on the carvery side of things with fantastic cuts of meat such as prime rib and lamb as well as meat pies in abundance. Worthy of particular mention was the truffle mushroom soup, which was, without a doubt, the best mushroom soup

I’d ever had. Also worthy of mention is the sushi, which is of a very high quality given that it’s not a particular specialty of the venue. They even come round and do a table service with the meat trolleys, where you get a perfect cut of premium beef delivered with a dash of mash and gravy right to your seat, and the prime rib was absolutely superb – melt-in-your-mouth tender and very tasty. And the best part of it all is the price,

which is AED155++ for the buffet only, and AED199++ with free flowing house beverages, which is frankly staggering value for money given the feast on offer! The brunch takes place from 12pm to 3.30pm in CuiScene every Saturday. Perfect for a casual Saturday out with friends! ✤ GO: Call (0)2 654 3238 for reservations and more information. fact magazine

Isael Goncalves Sommelier at La Cava, Rosewood Abu Dhabi

city insider WHEN YOU’RE NOT AT WORK, What do you like to do in YOUR SPARE TIME, IN Abu Dhabi? My favourite thing in Abu Dhabi is the outdoors. I’m Brazilian, so I love the beach; my favourite is Saadiyat Island. The scenery is fantastic and it reminds me of the untouched beaches in Brazil. I also cycle 30km per day before work. It’s a great way to clear the mind and also to get to know the city better. Of course, due to being a sommelier, I need to know what’s happening in the nightlife scene so I also enjoy going out, meeting new people and talking to the barmen to identify new trends in the market. 114 fact magazine

Your favourite things about life in the UAE… The cultural diversity. I can now say I have friends from every single continent! I have learnt so much about different cultures and traditions; it is really a unique experience. Something I respect and admire is the way the Emirati community welcomes us to their country and makes us feel at home without losing their heritage and values. I have close Emirati friends and I have learnt so much about the UAE and their way of life. I also love the location of the UAE. In Brazil travelling wasn’t as easy as it is here. Since I arrived in the UAE six years ago I have already filled my passport with 69 countries.

Your recommendation for a romantic evening out in Abu Dhabi… La Cava of course, not because it is my second home, but because it’s unique! We have a special experience prepared for one lucky couple that would like to have exclusive use of La Cava. All the details are tailor made! We had a request last year for a couple and we prepared a memorable experience with exclusive beverages. If you’re looking for another experience, try Sambusek. The view and fire pits make it a perfect location. The music, the atmosphere and the food make it intimate and refined.
