THE EDITOR

Picture Perfect “The world of reality has its limits; the world of imagination is boundless.” - Jean-Jacques Rousseau

N

ovember is always a bit of a crazy, fun-filled month in Abu Dhabi. There are concerts and music festivals, racing events, arts fairs and a huge boost of cultural activities. This is the month when you start to feel the buzz (and stress) of the festive season too. But, you won’t hear any complaints from me. This is my absolute favourite time of the year in the city; going out for long walks, sitting on a restaurant’s terrace for dinner, and dusting off the boots to up your wardrobe game - how can you not love the cool season? And what better event to get your outdoor fix than the 2016 Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix? Taking place on the last weekend of the month the F1 weekend is not only a time for track action but also for partying like a true rockstar. At the time of going to print, there was so much yet to be revealed (like the Beats on the Beach line up) for the busiest weekend of the year. But, we managed to get the lowdown on some awesome parties and F1 offers that are definitely worth checking out (p25). One of the standout features for me this month is Abu Dhabi Through Your Eyes; an awe-inspiring collection of images that were revealed as winners of the annual competition of the same name. Participants were encouraged to capture the spirit of Abu Dhabi from their perspective and these photographs are just stunning. Our favourite of the bunch made the cover story, you can see all the beautiful images starting p35. Arts, travel, fashion and dining also have something great to offer you this month. Check out what’s in store at Abu Dhabi Art 2016 (p41); read all about our magical trip to the Czech Republic with 24 Hours in Prague (p50); find something awesome to wear with the brand new Kenzo X H&M Collection (p71); and revel in the wonders of beachfront dining at BBQ Al Qasr (p85). Whatever you do, make sure it’s not all just binge-watching Netflix and getting Talabat orders in - get out there and enjoy the breeze before it’s gone in a hot flash!☺ Shabana Adam Editor-in-Chief shabana@fact-magazine.com 6

Image Nation Abu Dhabi’s latest feature film, The Worthy, had its world premiere at the prestigious BFI London Film Festival last month. Directed by pioneering Emirati filmmaker Ali Mostafa, The Worthy is set in a dystopian future. After the vast majority of the world’s water supply is lethally contaminated, a small group of survivors who have taken refuge near a rare clean water source are thrust into a deadly game of cat and mouse and must defend their lives from infiltrators who aren’t what they seem. The film marks Ali Mostafa’s first foray into the action genre and sees him re-team with several of his previous collaborators including actors Samer Al Masri (Bab Al Hara), Ali Suliman (Zinzana, Paradise Now) and Habib Ghuloom (City of Life), as well as regional producer Rami Yasin (Sea Shadow, Zinzana). Ali Mostafa said: “As I was born in London it makes this an important festival for me and it is one of the most forward-thinking events in the film calendar which champions films from the Middle East.” The picture is Mostafa’s third feature film and second collaboration with Image Nation, following his debut movie City of Life and the hit road trip drama, From A to B. The Worthy is slated to be released theatre-wide in early 2017, with a Middle Eastern premiere and further film festivals to be announced in the coming months. ✤

East Meets West In a celebration of Eastern and Western cultures and presented in association with Abu Dhabi Art, Cranleigh Abu Dhabi is embarking on an ambitious two-part performing and arts project inspired by a poem written by the late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan called Beautiful World. The unique production will bring together a professional creative team of four, two opera singers, a talented Emirati artist and over 80 Cranleigh Abu Dhabi students and members of staff, and will take place at the Cranleigh auditorium on November 14. Also, in collaboration with Zayed University, Narjes Noureddine - a gifted calligraphy artist - will showcase her work at Cranleigh Senior School in an exhibition, which will run from November 9 to 24. The exhibition will be opened by Dr Zaki Nusseibeh, Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and Cultural Advisor at the UAE Ministry of Presidential Affairs. Currently a fourth year student at Zayed University’s College of Arts and Creative Enterprises (CACE), Narjes uses Arabic poetry to create her paintings and 3D works in both traditional and abstract forms of calligraphy. At the centre of her exhibition, Narjes will be creating a new commission in response to the poem Beautiful World. Ann-Maree Reaney, Dean of the College of Arts and Creative Enterprises at Zayed University, says: “This project reflects the mission of CACE Zayed University to engage meaningfully with the professional art and design industry and community in the UAE, so that students may be exposed to real life experiences that challenge and develop their skills in a professional arena.” To bring this project to life, four dynamic professional opera educationalists; a director, composer, choreographer and designer will be working closely with more than 80 Cranleigh Abu Dhabi students (aged 12-16 years), over five days, to create an opera − a

contemporary piece of performance art taking inspiration from the same poem across the genres of drama, music, design, art and dance. Two professional operatic singers will help to lead and inspire the performance and Narjes will also work with the students, staff and the designer on creating the stage set, which will be the backdrop for the opera. The project will give the whole school community the opportunity to experience both Eastern and Western cultures and practices, and aims to pave the way for discussions with other educational and arts institutions, to explore ways to collaborate on similar projects in the future. BMI UAE HAPPENINGS November 4: BMI UAE presents Used + Abused with Loco Dice and Caleb Calloway. It’s time for Tribal House to take centre stage as the 10-year DC10 veteran, Loco Dice, brings the unique heart-thumping genre to the UAE shores. Loco Dice, famous for tracks like Menina Brasiliera, and Seeing Through Shadows, takes you on a cinematic journey through his North African and Middle Eastern folkloric musical influences. He’ll be joined by Caleb Calloway on that night, a DJ rooted from the tropical sounds of his native country Puerto Rico and influenced by the melting pot of music he encountered in Chicago, Texas, and New York. After having opened up for Loco Dice, Calloway sparked the interest of talent booker Louis Diaz from Club Space Miami. He was then presented with the amazing opportunity to tour with Loco Dice and become his supporting act. Now you have the chance to catch both artists and their infectious sounds at BMI UAE. November 11: Jackmaster will take to the decks along with Joseph Capriati. “I don’t think about music in terms of genre, I think about it in terms of energy levels,” he says – and as his star has risen over the past few years, this has been on perfect display at parties in places like Glasgow, Berlin and New York, and superclubs such as Berghain and Fabric to legendary underground warehouse parties. Now recognised as one of the principal profiles in techno, Joseph Capriati has established a reputation as a universally popular and in-demand talent. A naturally charismatic DJ with a back catalogue of standout productions, Joseph is an instinctive performer with a genuine enthusiasm for entertaining. November 18: Cocoon makes a return with Illario Alicante and Markus Fix on Friday. Ilario’s journey began with his regional DJ community, resulting in a long-running residency with Pachamama Club. After the success of his first hit track “Vacaciones En Chile” (Tenax Recordings), Ilario had an increasing number of invitations from clubs around Europe, further honing his DJ’s ear and fine-tuning his unique production sound. Markus Fix had a notable residency at U60311 where he was left free reign to his musical passion. He has played with top Djs like Tiefschwarz, Dominik Eulberg, Loco Dice, Tobi Neumann, Ewan Pearson and Martin Landsky amongst others. ✤

F1 HAPPENINGS

partY hard on f1 Weekend! Taking the meaning of lit to a whole new level, Blue Marlin Ibiza UAE has something special planned for F1 weekend; a huge Circoloco party and one of the venue’s most successful Saturday brunches, the Spiritual Brunch. The last weekend of the month presents the popular Circoloco party with Jamie Jones, Kerri Chandler and Art Department. The beginnings of Circoloco started at DC10 back in Ibiza 1999. The now-famous night shaped modern club culture and the Crazy Clown face went on to travel around the world as a beacon of the party ethos of Circoloco, becoming a symbol for the underground spirit of dance music culture. Making a return to Blue Marlin Ibiza UAE on Friday 25th November, Circoloco brings along Jamie Jones, who is renowned for his cross genre band, Hot Natured; his ground-breaking label, Hot Creations; and his worldrenowned event series, Paradise. In less than a decade, he has catapulted himself to stardom by shattering genres and breaking out of the confines of minimal techno. Kerri Chandler’s influences can be traced back to New Jersey growing up in a family of jazz musicians. His father, a respected deejay, provided Kerri with a rich background in the origins of soul, disco and the New York Underground Sound (known also as Garage music). The future is very bright for Kerri who is now signing and releasing 30

productions through his new record label imprints: Max Trax, Grei Matter and Lost Tribes of Ibadan. Last but not least, the returning Art Department has transcended scenes and broken down walls as underground artists as few others have, garnering accolades including number one track of the year at the Beatport Awards in 2011. They have been installed as Circoloco residents at arguably the most revered club on earth - DC10; upon request have taken their immersive live show to esteemed nightclubs like Fabric and Panorama Bar and have been invited to perform at trendsetting international events. On Saturday 26th November, the last brunch of the season welcomes Schooly and Dubai electronic music staple, Charl Chaka. With music in his blood and funk in his soul, he has championed a distinct deep, funky jackin’ house sound and to this day is credited as being the first DJ to introduce this sound to Dubai. He will be joined by Schooly’s soulful tunes, another Dubai favourite from Radio 1. flamBoYant impressions Swiss Art Gate UAE together with Emirates Palace and the German photographer, Andreas Denstorf present Flamboyant Impressions, a photo exhibition of new works at Mezzaluna restaurant.

a

ndreas Denstorf is a master of photography who not only takes pictures, but also transforms each image into a pop-art style with flashy colors and inventive compositions. Andreas works with multiple levels - reflections, separations and overlaps - and he creates an exciting mood with each of his art works. The viewer can see variously transformed segments in many bright colours. Born in 1969, in Rees on the Rhine, Germany, Andreas loved photography already as a young man and his career allowed him to look at the world from different angles. As reported in Interior Design magazine in 2015, Andreas titles his work PLATUX, derived from the philosopher Plato and Lux, which means light. He uses a blend of materials, colours, dimensions and forms to create something visual for the viewer. Andreas’ artwork is similar to pop-art but he tries to go one step further by separating the picture into more colourful segments. The multidimensional PLATUX Photo Art is based on special photographs that evoke numerous levels, colours and meanings. Artistic values include separations, reflections, overlays and bright shining colours full of light and energy. As the artist explains, PLATUX is a composite of the philosopher Plato and LUX, the Latin word for light. Behind all PLATUX artworks stands the photographer Andreas Denstorf. Michael Omumbwa, restaurant manager at Mezzaluna in Emirates Palace, notes that since 2009 Swiss Art Gate UAE has organised 14 exhibitions at the awardwinning restaurant, mostly with an Italian theme. Venetian murals and motifs create the perfect ambiance for a truly Italian sensation of rich Mediterranean culinary delights. He believes that Denstorf ’s delicious use of colour and texture in the works of art garnishing the walls forms a perfect pairing with the vibrant Italian cuisine created in Mezzaluna’s lively kitchen and feels honoured to be collaborating with Swiss Art Gate UAE on this exhibition. ✤ GO: Flamboyant Impressions runs until March 4, 2017 at Mezzaluna Restaurant in Emirates Palace. Big Screen Arrival What’s it about: When large alien vessels arrive on Earth, a US military Colonel (Forest Whitaker) calls on a world renowned linguist (Amy Adams) and a brilliant mathematician (Jeremy Renner). They’re tasked with forming communications with the species and understanding their intentions before the world erupts into chaos.

DIRECTOR: Denis Villeneuve CAST: Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner, Forest Whitaker, Michael Stuhlbarg

Highlights “A powerful and seasoned cast come together to tell the story of mankind’s first global and undeniable contact with an alien species.”

Lion What’s it about: In this Australian-American drama, a five-year-old Indian boy gets on the wrong train and is taken thousands of miles away from his country, home and family. Fast-forward 25 years later and he is still struggling with the memories of his past and begins to search for his origins through the use of Google Earth.

– Arrival

WHY IT’S WORTH WATCHING? Mankind has always wondered if it’s alone in the cosmos. Director Denis Villeneuve delivers a thought-provoking and creative movie which addresses this very possibility. It goes one step further in exploring what the result of such contact could mean for us as a race. In the end, will we prove to be a far worse enemy to ourselves than any other potential threat? A powerful and seasoned cast come together to tell the story of mankind’s first global and undeniable contact with an alien species. The visual effects are impressive and the acting performances, especially from Adams, are enjoyable. You’re left not only excited by the sheer scale of the story, but also moved by the plight of one person attempting to overcome her fears, to do what she must, to rescue humankind from destruction. Critics are generally praising the film and it’s already begun to receive awards and nominations on the film festival circuit. Another sci-fi must-see!

“As the story progresses, it’s plain to see how hugely Brierley’s experience as well as his loss have affected him...” – Lion

DIRECTOR: Garth Davis CAST: Dev Patel, Nicole Kidman, Rooney Mara, David Wenham WHY IT’S WORTH WATCHING? Oscar winner Nicole Kidman heads a talented cast in the delivering of this biopic, based on Saroo Brierley’s (Dev Patel) memoir A Long Way Home. Patel offers a touching performance filled with torment and determination. Kidman skillfully plays the part of his adopted mother, who suffers along with her son on his quest. As the story progresses, it’s plain to see how hugely Brierley’s experience as well as his loss have affected him and just how desperate he becomes to find not only his mother and brother, but himself. by Kings of Leon

Fans of the rock ‘n roll super group Kings of Leon have had to wait three years for the release of their 7th studio album. The Grammy award-winning rockers’ Walls (We Are Like Love Songs) has failed to impress critics in the manner that previous albums have; the band’s march towards total commercialism is all but complete. However, they haven’t been able to create a powerful album filled with amazing songs such as we saw in their 2008 offering, Only by the Night. Although their two following albums did not live up to previous highs, they still had more to offer than Walls. Very few of the ten tracks are chart toppers or even set to become driving anthems as time goes by. A high bar has been set by the Kings for themselves and their masses of fans expect great things from them. In our opinion, this album has not been able to deliver what everyone knows they are capable of. Perhaps their break with their long-time producer is partially to blame.

ELECTRO-POP/ DANCE

Author James Rebanks gives an observant and detailed account of his years as a sheep farmer in the north-eastern fells of the Lake District, England. His diary offers a clear insight into what it’s like to care for these animals from birth until death and the journey in between. He manages to draw insightful comparisons between these experiences and what we as people have to deal with in everyday life. His wit and imagination along with his wellgrounded assertion of value add layers to this original work. An intimate look into a life lived in a truly magical place.

Joanne

by Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga is set to release her 5th studio album after two years of patient waiting from her fans. Named after her father’s late sister, Joanne is set to please all the Little Monsters, with yet more interesting collaborations with famous artists and soul-baring lyrics from the world famous singer. Gaga described Joanne as “an Italian American girl, a city girl, venturing out into new territory.” She goes on to reveal that there will be a total of 11 songs on the main album and 14 songs on the deluxe edition. So far, only three of the included tracks have been premiered to the delight of fans present in Nashville. The album is set for full release on October 21st and we can’t wait to see the bizarre antics she is so famous for, captured in her upcoming music videos.

SUSPENSE/THRILLER

The Last Mile By David Baldacci

The extraordinary detective with a photographic memory, Amos Decker, is back. In his latest role as a newly hired FBI special task force member, he investigates a 20-year-old case with striking similarities to his own past. With only hours left before convicted murderer Melvin Mars’ execution, someone has come forward to admit to his crimes, leading to a reprieve for the convict. When one of Decker’s team members goes missing, it is clear that something bigger and far more ominous is afoot.

A medieval metropolis, the streets of Prague are not only filled with the most hauntingly beautiful Gothic architecture, but with arts, romance and heart-beating music. With every step, every building, and every small cobble stone, you’ll walk through its history, emptying your mind to take in all its beauty. Shabana Adam did just that and found some of the best things to do in the fairytale Czech capital if you’re visiting for a few days.

7:30 Am Enjoy a delightfully diverse breakfast at CottoCrudo in the Four Seasons Hotel. Get a seat by the window with views of Prague Castle over the River Vltava. Make sure you try the soft-as-cotton Czech donuts stuffed with either jam or chocolate, before setting off to explore the city.

moment to take in the sights and sounds of local culture. You can pick up everything from Bohemian crystal to homemade memorabilia along the charming walkway. Legend has it that touching the statue of St. John of Nepomuk, a Czech martyr, is supposed to bring good luck and ensure your return to Prague.

9.00 Am

2:00 pm

Hop on the 22 tram just around the corner from the Four Seasons Hotel, heading towards Prague Castle. Tip: get off at the second stop Kralovský - across the road is a small gate, through which you can enter the beautiful gardens surrounding Prague Castle. This entrance is a lot less busier than the main gate and also warrants a lovely stroll through the park with ample photo opps!

Burn off the fuel and stop for a traditional lunch at Staromestská restaurace, famous for its classic, home-style Czech cuisine with excellent options for meat eaters and vegetarians alike. Located just off Old Town Square (where stopping by the beautiful astronomical clock, on the hour, is a must), this place is pretty easy to find and offers a good taste of local fare at a decent price.

11:00 Am

3:30 pm

After exploring the many places within Prague Castle, including the stunning, Romanesque St. George’s Basilica and the famous Golden Lane, an ancient street of 11 historic houses now selling one-of-a-kind keepsakes, head down the hill via the cobbled steps at the exit and be sure to take a picture of the breathtaking terracotta rooftops and city views on the way!

A five-minute walk down from Old Town Square you’ll find Wenceslas Square market - a long row of sideto-side and back-to-back stalls selling Czech trinkets, vintage gifts, local choclate and little knick knacks. This place is considerably cheaper than the shops in Old Town, so wait to do your present-picking from here.

12:00 pm Stop for a local treat of Rotatoes (an ultimate frisbee-style stack of potates) or Trdelník (a sweet pastry of rolled dough wrapped around a stick, then grilled and topped with sugar and walnut mix). Eat while you casually walk towards Lesser Town, a beautiful Baroque quarter clustered around the foot of the castle. Here, you’ll find great deals on jewellery made from the famous Czech Garnet. Pay cash and avoid the tax!

1:00 pm From Lesser Town start making your way across the famous stone-Gothic Charles Bridge towards Old Town. Bustling with Czech artists, musicians, and souvenir vendors, stop for a

5.00 pm If you want shopping, the Palladium mall is the best place in Prague to find all the top high-street brands. A walk towards Námestí Republiky will get you there. On the way, stop by some of the city’s most beautiful buildings like Národní Muzeum and the Municipal House, a civic building that houses Smetana Hall, a celebrated concert venue.

8:00 pm End the day with a front row seat at the Neo-Renaissance Rudolfinum and watch the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra put on an impressive classical concert. The programme is made up of the best - Mozart, Vivaldi, Bach and more - making for the perfect, magical finish to your day. ✤ fact magazine

hen you’re going to a place like Prague, where modern-day scenery with skyscrapers and glass buildings are a rare sight, you’re in for a refreshing break from the giltzy towers of the Gulf. The Czech capital is an incredible mix of eras, all of which have been well-preserved through its colourful, cobbled streets and buildings. One place that is a fine example of this is the Four Seasons Hotel prague. The 5-star property blends four architectural styles with three historic structures and a newer main building made with a delicatelyhued ochre sandstone from a Czech quarry 54

HOTEL HOTSPOT

A RENAISSANCE REVELATION The 157 rooms and suites at this luxury hotel each offer an excellent amount of space, thanks to the unique layouts of the four buildings. We were to call the huge Renaissance Room home for a few days, and there was nothing but excitement upon entering. Firstly, this accommodation is the hotel’s largest guest room, being beaten only by the sprawling suites. You can tell that the room has been newly refurbished, however, what we loved about it was the fact that it still managed to reflect the architectural style of the Renaissance Building. High ceilings, tall, grand windows overlooking either the Monastery of the Knights of the Cross or the historic city centre streets, and traditional touches like Czechstyle panelling, hand-painted stencilling and a bohemian crystal chandelier, were all elements that kept us in good spirits every time we came back to the hotel after a day out discovering the city. Space is not the only thing that this room has. luxury Asprey amenities are abundant in the large marble bathroom with a lovely, deep bath tub, spacious shower, excellent make-up mirror (ladies, you’ll be impressed), whilst the room has a refrigerated private bar, all your usual hot and cold refreshments and minibar goodies, a plasma screen with a good channel selection, and a fabulous seating and working area. Oh, and let’s talk about the bed - the down duvet and pillows were simply heaven to slip into after a day of walking - we slept like babies! We’d highly recommend this room for couples, friends and small families who want a taste of the traditional mixed with modern comforts.

FOR THE LOVE OF FOOD There’s an overwhelming amount of italian restaurants in Prague. Why? Well, we soon learn that it’s simply because the Czech people just happen to love italian food. At the Four Seasons Hotel prague, it’s CottoCrudo, a modern italian restaurant, bar and lounge that flies the 5-star food flag. This is also the restaurant where you’re served breakfast. now, let us reveal something. We’re not always ones to wake up for breakfast when travelling - sometimes you just want a liein, right? But, here, we were so in awe of the food and service at breakfast that we made it down every morning. Firstly, breakfast is served until 11am from a lavish buffet of local and continental favourites alongside a delicious a la carte menu. Try the mind-blowing Belgian waffles or the mouthwatering egg white frittata. in the evening,

CottoCrudo is just as casually sophisticated. The menu is made up of italian and Mediterranean dishes including fresh seafood, homemade pasta, choice meat cuts and artisan products from the Piedmont and Tuscany regions of italy. let’s dive into some of our favourites; the creamy Burrata was a big win at the table as was the creative and tasty red prawns with cabbage salad, parmesan cheese and hazelnut. The absolute standout was the Saffron risotto with roasted seabass, buffalo mozzarella and green pea purée - packed with flavours, textures and colour, this dish really took our breath away. For dessert, test (and treat) your taste buds with the chilled strawberry and rhubarb soup with sorrel ice cream and chocolate ganache - it’s just as good as it sounds! We have to give a huge mention to all the staff at CottoCrudo, who served us with the utmost professionalism, patience and the biggest smiles. A special shout-out goes to Martin who really went that extra mile every time; for sharing his insider Prague stories and always being so friendly and observant to all our food requests. He made the start to our day much more positive and inspired! It’s definitely the people that make this place so special.

SPA CULTURE REFINED Ava Spa had just opened a little before our trip to Prague and we were intrigued to experience the spa culture that the Czech are so famous for. Based on water and mineral rich products, exclusive facial and body treatments with moor muds are enhanced with a state-of-the-art traditional Czech-inspired thermal baths menu. We tried the 50-minute La Boheme massage, a relaxing head-to-toe treatment inspired by the Czech national tree. Sylva the therapist tells us that the treatment uses detoxifying and regenerating linden blossom oil as part of a soft massage, decreasing cold symptoms and encouraging healthy sleep. it was, honestly, one of the best massages we’ve had. Unlike your standard aromatherapy massage, Sylva really listened to our areas of concern and worked out all the troublesome kinks to leave us feeling completely invigorated. The vitality pool with a wide variety of massage jets provided the ultimate hydrotherapy in a relaxing Central European spa ambience. ✤ GO: CALL +420 221 427 000 OR VISIT WWW. hen you think 4-star in the GCC, the standards and expectations can be a world of difference from one property to another. In general, the benchmark for 4 and 5-star hotels is a pretty high one in a city like Abu Dhabi. Here, things are mostly prim and proper and very rarely disappointing. So, with our hospitality radar on go, we checked into the trendy Southern Sun Abu Dhabi (part of the South African Tsogo Sun hotel chain). Located in the Tourist Club Area, we’d never have expected the hotel to be so bright and inviting on the inside. The lobby area is adorned in chic, homely décor; there are sinking sofas and chairs, cool lighting fixtures and very sleek, almost-geometriccum-floral design on the walls and high ceilings. All of this teamed with lots of natural light give it warmth – this is so much more than just your average tower block lobby - we’re impressed. Side note: the lobby lounge, Filaments, is a sophisticated space that serves up some of the yummiest macaroons, so make sure you stop by for a sweet treat and beverage at some point during your stay! 60

The hotel accommodation comprises of 353 luxurious en-suite rooms and suites over 27 floors. These include Deluxe and Executive Rooms, OneBedroom Suites and three very spacious Presidential Suites. We walked into a large Deluxe Room to be met with contemporary interiors that saw a perfect marriage of Middle Eastern touches with modern-day needs. Neutral tones and dark wood and leather really add to the generous size and help to create a comfortable vibe. A host of in-room amenities are offered, from free WiFi access, tea and coffee making facilities, electronic safe, a wellstocked mini bar, lovely bathroom amenities and an excellent desk area to separate your sleep area from your work area so if, like us, you just have to catch up on emails and little work, the Deluxe Room will provide a good balance of work and relaxation. For us, however, it was the huge, comfortable beds and the sunken bath tub that meant we had a truly relaxing break. When we returned from a good workout at the gym, the sense of wellbeing was enhanced after a long soak in the tub. The wi-fi was fast, the housekeeping was flawless and the inroom dining options were super tasty. In all honesty, you’ll find it difficult to leave the hotel (and even your room) much, because every want or need is catered to.

If there’s one thing that the Southern Sun Abu Dhabi does well, it’s food. Six restaurants and bars offer guests a massivelydiverse range of cuisines, settings and gathering opportunities. A sweet snack and pastries with freshly-brewed beverages can be enjoyed at Filaments, whilst Balcon Lounge & Terrace is the ideal choice for casual al fresco dining (t surrounds a crystal clear pool), with a menu packed with flavourful shisha, light bites, mezzes and refreshments. There’s also Hytes Bar, on the 27th floor, which provides magical expansive Abu Dhabi city views below. A variety of snacks and appetisers are available under an open sky and it’s become quite the social hangout for meeting up with friends. Blu Sky Lounge & Grill is the hotel’s newest addition to its foodie portfolio. The venue is designed to give you the best sporting experience possible. From state-of-the-art sound systems and HD viewing screens to a fresh new line-up of international and local dishes and a range of premium beverages, Blu Sky is the ultimate choice for any sports fans out there. The Foundry restaurant continues to be one of the best steakhouses in town. Here, breakfast is one of the tastiest in the city, as is the dinner menu with everything from a butter trolley to a choose your knife experience when you’re dining there. issan is a wellestablished brand who, after all these years, are still not short on new ideas and continue to improve on their already substantial offerings. Recently, the new 2017 Nissan Altima was launched and needless to say, the car did not fail to impress. The Altima has been upgraded to say the least. It comes complete with a fresh new look that includes the “Energetic Flow” exterior styling theme and “Gliding Wing” interior layout. Other impressive elements include “Class Leading Fuel Economy” as well as “Improved Driving Dynamics and Safety Technology.” So let us chat more about the changes adopted by the Altima. To start off, a dramatic transformation to the front end, which is the focal point of the entire vehicle. The design was created with energetic flow in mind incorporating a redesigned V-Motion grille and boomerang shaped headlights, similar to its close relative, the Maxima. This has created a more emotive and striking façade than its predecessor with a wide, deeply sculpted lower bumper, integrated fog lights and prominent chrome-trimmed grille. The reshaped headlights feature LED Daytime Running Lights that sweep into the wide raised hood, creating the perfect harmony between form and function. So the front is great! What about the back? The appearance of the rear of the car is equally expressive. Taking design cues from the front, the rear incorporates a new sculpted bumper with a dark lower accent, a new trunk lid, and lower, wider boomerang-shaped combination lights. This has helped create a car that has sleek lines and a silhouette that’s rejuvenated. Another valued added design feature is the standard Zero Gravity front seats which have been reshaped to increase comfort levels. This has been incorporated thanks to customer feedback, and clearly shows Nissan’s commitment to taking onboard customer sentiment and creating a driving environment that’s chock full of new technologies and upscale materials. So we’ve investigated the shape, what about the substance behind it? The X-Tronic D-Step CVT equipped in the new Nissan Altima is among the quietest in its segment and is the best in class with standard fuel economy of 13.2 KM/L. Technology has been amped up as well. The Altima comes

equipped with First in Class Predictive Forward Collision Warning (PFCW ), the Blind Spot Warning (BSW ), Forward Emergency Braking (FEB), and Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA). The new steering has also been reshaped and tuned to provide real time road input and precision. Impressive! Anything else to mention? Well, the interiors are refined and follows the new “Gliding Wing“ design language. Central to the new look is the revised C-stack with available 5.0-inch and 7.0-inch displays for Navigation with Mobile Apps. All finished with the Acoustic windshield that provides a new level of cabin isolation and quietness. The Nissan Altima 2017 is offered in five grade levels including 2.5 S, SV, SL and 3.5 SV and SL grades. A pretty impressive car to say the least. ✤ GO: For more details or to arrange a test drive, please visit any Al Masaood Automobiles showroom or go online at www.nissan-abudhabi.com for more information. fact magazine

HOME STYLE

COLOURFUL COLLECTIONS AT IKEA This season, the home sees a range of textiles with strong colours and bold patterns ranging from rugs to metre fabrics – here are just some of our favourites at IKEA…

RAVNSÖ Rug Striped in some warm autumn colours, RAVNSÖ rug breathes of traditional Scandinavian style and came about after designer Synnöve Mork visited a Swedish museum. Handwoven in wool, the rug is made in the IKEA initiative of handwoven rugs in India. The rug has the same pattern on both sides, so you can turn it over and it will withstand more wear and last even longer.

HALVED Rug Striped in twelve different colours, HALVED rug creates a colourful statement in connection to a sofa or dining table. With so many delightful tones, it’s bound to coor- dinate with the rest of the home interior. The wool rug is handwoven in an IKEA initiative of organised weaving centres in India with good working conditions and fair wages. The result is a unique rug that not only looks good, but a rug to feel good about too.

ROSENRIPS Quilt Cover Not only does ROSENRIPS quilt cover look beautiful with its traditional Swedish pattern, there’s some real history to it too. The designer Eva Lundgren created the 82

quilt cover with inspiration from a regional museum that houses a perma- nent collection of textiles dating all the way back to the 1600s from Sweden’s southernmost region. Back then women started at a young age to make pieces for their dowry that would become part of their new home once they were married. These traditional wool embroideries sparked the designer to create ROSENRIPS quilt cover.

DAGGSKÅL, DVÄRGBJÖRK, NATTGLIM, ORANGELILJA & PIPDÅN Metre Fabrics This month sees the launch of five new metre fabrics that can be used to personalise and add some punch to the home. Many of the patterns have been created with inspiration from food, for example ORANGELILJA metre fabric features bright pieces of oranges, while PIPDÅN metre fabric shows kitchen utensils and food in an eclectic monochrome mix. The metre fabrics can be used in many different ways, maybe as a long tablecloth, curtains, cushion covers, napkins or even clothes they’re just a great chance to get creative! ✤

BBQ ELEGANCE “There are beautiful views of the water as well as the Palace. We definitely take pride in the food we prepare and the ingredients we use, offering our guests the very best. - Chef Yann Lohez fact magazine

CHEF’S TABLE

THE NEXT TIME YOU’RE INVITED TO A BARBEQUE, SUGGEST SOMETHING DIFFERENT THAT EVERYONE WILL LOVE. AN EVENING OUT AT BBQ AL QASR, THE BEAUTIFUL AL FRESCO VENUE LOCATED ON THE BEACH AT EMIRATES PALACE. FACT WENT TO MEET THE MAN IN THE KITCHEN WHO’S BEEN MAKING TASTE BUDS AROUND THE CITY DO THE HAPPY DANCE, SENIOR CHEF DE CUISINE YANN LOHEZ. THIS IS HOW IT WENT DOWN… THERE’S JUST SOMETHING extra special about being able to eat outdoors, on the beach and by the sea. Maybe it’s good to feel the breeze (for once in Abu Dhabi) through your hair or maybe it’s the soothing sound of the water, whatever your reason for dining al fresco, now’s the time to do it. With the weather revealing it’s cool and much more outdoor-friendly side, lunch or dinner needn’t be a business of staying inside! Ditch the air-con and go for a more pleasant temperature with a seat at one of the capital’s most luxurious settings; the stunning BBQ Al Qasr at Emirates Palace. This place takes the meaning of al fresco to a whole new world; cabana-style seating, mood-lit walkways (after sunset), delicious aromas and BBQ dishes that are seasoned perfectly and cooked to preference – what’s not to love? When we visited BBQ Al Qasr to dine at the table of Senior Chef De Cuisine, Yann Lohez, we just weren’t prepared to experience what turned out to be some of the best steak, seafood, salad and even dessert, to have ever passed our lips! Firstly, we’re in good hands. Chef Yann is known to create the most original and inspiring charcoal-grilled indulgences using the freshest products, sourced for their quality and provenance. He brings a modern flair and exquisite skill to BBQ Al Qasr, unlike anything we’ve seen before at a restaurant where BBQ dominates the menu. Undoubtedly, the finesse in his cooking and presentation is definitely a result of his time spent in Michelin-star restaurants in Europe and under the guidance of notable chefs such as Paul Bocuse. The menu at BBQ Al Qasr has helpful headings to guide you; From The Land, From The Sea, On Charcoal, and many more useful temptations so you know exactly where to look to curb those food cravings. We begin with a wonderfullypresented Honeymoon Salad in a Flower Pot, Hand Dived Scallops From The Shell and the uniquely-displayed House Smoked Gravlax Organic Scottish Salmon. Not only does every dish have a touch of the outside in its presentation – the high quality of the ingredients can be tasted in every bite. The scallops are the faves - cooked to melt-in-yourmouth tenderness - this dish is an absolute must. 86

CHEF’S TABLE

Our mains consist of a mighty meat treat as well as succulent seafood; we go for the 160g Mrs. Filet of Australian Wagyu Beef Master Kobe Tenderloin and the 100g Atlantic Lobster, with Deluxe Truffle Potato, Kitchen Garden Steamed Vegetables and Garlic Spinach on the side. We’re salivating just at the thought of it all! So, we’re about to make a pretty bold statement – this is possibly (definitely) in the top three steaks we’ve had in Abu Dhabi, ever. Medium-cooked, seasoned just right and with a hint of smokiness, the Wagyu filet blows us away. The size of the lobster and the fact that it’s adorned in all of our favourite vegetables is something that makes this dish truly tasty. Chef Yann explains: “Simply grilled on charcoals, we use the best available ingredients,” he says. “Our focus is on authenticity, interactivity, and sharing and our ingredients are sourced from all corners of the globe, and all of our prime cuts are imported,” he adds. No meal would be complete without a sweet ending (even if you’re stuffed, have a break and make room for dessert because it’s totally worth it!). There was just no second guessing or taking time to choose involved when we

spotted the Chocolate Molten, Summer’s End Fig Marmalade, 60 Tonka Bean Ice Cream – THIS.HAD.TO.BE.IT! Of course, when it came out to the table, everyone around fell silence and we’re pretty sure that time came to a stop; at least it felt that way as we watched the gooey chocolate filling spill out of its light and fluffy chocolate coat, onto the spoon and straight into our mouth. It’s hard to not show your love for this dish – we were caught licking the spoon on more than one occasion (no regrets!). The thing about BBQ Al Qasr is that every dish draws on an element of BBQ and a little bit of nature, all brought together with Chef Yann’s meticulous and loving touch. Add to this a venue that will literally take your breath away and you’ve got an extraordinary recipe for al fresco success. It’s almost too good to be true! One thing that Chef Yann said that stuck with us is: “My promise to all the meat lovers is to find the best cuts in the world and simply grill them over charcoal.” He kept his promise with us, now it’s your turn to hold him to his words! ✤ GO: Call (0)2 690 7999 for reservations and more information. fact magazine

ON THE MENU

t

he opening of Marriott Downtown Abu Dhabi has brought with it an array of new dining venues including the brand’s signature JW Steakhouse. The restaurant is a contemporary take on the classic American steakhouse but with a high-end feel and sophisticated décor. We’re warmly greeted by the hostess and shown to our table. The venue is large but warm and creates an intimate feeling with separate booths and areas for more private dining. It has a very personal feel with masculine high back chairs, oversized menus and large wooden placemats with silver bull horns, all of which are unique to the JW Steakhouse name. We check over menu which is made up of tasty starters, a large selection of steak (no surprises there) and some delicious seafood options. To start you can choose from the First Flavours

“THERE ARE SEVERAL ENTICING STEAK OPTIONS INCLUDING EVERYTHING FROM USDA CERTIFIED PRIME BEEF, AUSTRALIAN WAGYU, AUSTRALIAN TENDERLOIN, MASTER KOBE AA9 AND MORE AMAZING CHOICES... We settle on two options from the First Flavours menu; Smoked Loch Fyne Salmon and Australian Wagyu Beef Carpaccio (because, why not?). The smoked salmon is beautifully presented with large pieces of the tasty fish served up with buttery rye bread, lemon, horseradish, capers and shallots. The carpaccio is equally good with thin slices of fresh beef alongside pine nuts, parmesan, rocket oil and smoked Fleur de Sel. These

dishes are full of flavour and make for the perfect starters as they’re not too heavy and you won’t risk ruining your appetite for the main event. There are several enticing steak options including everything from USDA Certified Prime Beef, Australian Wagyu, Australian Tenderloin, Master Kobe AA9 and more amazing choices. We choose a 200gm Australian Tenderloin and the 300gm Kettyle Northern Irish Grass Fed Angus Rib Eye which is dry aged for 28 days. We go for the Smokey Cheddar Cream Sauce and grilled Forrest Mushrooms to accompany the tenderloin and with the first bite we realise just how well this combo has worked out. The steak cuts like butter and we can’t get over how wonderfully-cheesy the cream sauce is. The Irish Grass Fed Angus Rib Eye is packed with a pleasant flavour that makes for a nice change from the more well-known steak cuts. With it, we opt for an Argentinean Chimichurri sauce and lobster tail – yes, surf ‘n’ turf all the way! We share a serving of the Smokey Fries so as not to overload on carbs too much (though you could probably devour one portion, quite easily, by yourself ). They’re super delicious with paprika, herbs and Gruyere cheese. You would think after all this quality food we couldn’t possibly squeeze in desert but we’re no amateurs here at FACT. We boldly tried the famous JW Cheesecake. Served up with strawberry sorbet, this cheesecake was one of the best we’d tried in a long time. We loved the buttery biscuit base with a rich but light, creamy centre. This is a restaurant that really prides itself on the quality of its meat, and from what we tried, it’s doing a pretty top-notch job of fulfilling that promise. Too add to the food, the staff are attentive and friendly and service is professional and efficient – what else could you ask for? ✤ GO: Visit JW Steakhouse at Marriott Downtown Abu Dhabi. en the Spa at Beach Rotana Abu Dhabi has long been a favourite with the wellness crowd and visitors to the hotel. The serene spa is tucked away down a gorgeous marble staircase and is so much about disconnecting from the outside that it doesn’t even have mobile reception – you know what this mean? Switching off completely and pure relaxation. The spa’s concept derives from holistic Asian philosophies with an added contemporary twist. The aim of the spa team is to provide each guest with me time to simply rebalance and rejuvenate, allowing you to be transported away from your busy life to a retreat of calm. The spa consists of 10 treatment rooms, two tranquility suites and a lovely relaxation area. The treatment menu is also varied with relaxation therapies, body scrubs, facials, hand and foot treatments and, of course,

We’re booked in for the Rasul Mud Treatment (one of the spa’s most popular treatments) and a 30-minute Back, Neck and Shoulder Massage. The aim of the Rasul Mud Treatment is to soften the skin, so the treatment starts with dry brushing to exfoliate and remove surface layers of dead cells. Once this is done, the whole body is coated with four different types of mud. White mud on the face, yellow mud on the body, green mud on the arms and a darker grey mud for on the legs. Each mud is suited to to different parts of the body based on which areas need more or less exfoliation. The mud is smeared on in thick layers and feels super hydrating! While the mud is working its magic, you’ll be left in the room to relax while it fills with steam and the mud begins to set. After around 30 minutes, a cool shower then comes on overhead and we rthe mud is rinsed off to reveal super smooth skin. It’s then time for the Back, Neck and Shoulder Massage so we change to a different treatment room and lay down on the comfy bed. It starts with the therapist asking you to take three deep breaths of some aromatic essential oils. She works on the back first with a deep pressure to get all the knots and kinks out, soothing the neck and shoulders. The massage is strong yet relaxing - just as preferred.
