FEEL THE BREEZE

The greatest adventure lies outside.

I

f you’ve been loving the temperature drop this month (I can’t imagine why not) then get ready to make major plans over the winter season. Every year, we like to bring you the best of Abu Dhabi’s outdoor dining scene, because, let’s face it - being able to go to a restaurant or lounge and actually sit outside (and not melt in five seconds) is a novelty that we need to take advantage of in the cooler months. And because we all know that food is a focal point here in the capital, what better way to enjoy the winter breeze than dinner on a terrace, ladies night at a rooftop lounge and more bearable beach and garden soirees, whether it is brunch, lunch or another themed night offering. Turn to p37 for Dine Out and get your calendars at the ready, we’ve got the only list of cool al fresco spots you need to know about right now. From hotel hopping to independent eateries - pick your faves, book a table and have a great time! This season is also ideal for leisurely weekend breaks - you can really enjoy the Emirates and your home away from home. So, with unique experiences in mind, this month’s Local Escapes comes courtesy of the forever mesmerising Anantara resorts on Sir Bani Yas Island (p45) and on the opposite end of the spectrum, pure city bliss at Marriott Hotel Downtown, Abu Dhabi (p52). If you’re taking a trip to the city of glitz and glam, forgo the busy beach resorts and opt for the beautiful Manzil Downtown Dubai (p58) - you won’t be disappointed. Celebrating our very first love, the love of food (of course), our monthly Culinary Spotlight takes place at a dining favourite, Cho Gao, Crowne Plaza Abu Dhabi (p89), whilst the Foodie Corner takes you on a journey to Italy at BiCe, Jumeirah at Etihad Towers (p93), plus you’ll find SO MANY great dining deals for November in our Listen Up pages. You’ll find everything from fashion, beauty, tech and motoring alongside the need-to-know on huge events like Taste of Abu Dhabi (p32) and the most-anticipated event of the year - F1 weekend (p28). Soon, we’ll be putting up the festive tree and playing Jingle Bell Rock, so until 2017’s very last issue, happy eating - outside! ☺

WINGS PROJECT WINNERS Four aspiring Emirati artists will have their creative interpretations of the Abu Dhabi Art ‘wings’ logo developed into design products for Abu Dhabi Art 2017. THE WINGS PROJECT IS A yearly competition that runs alongside the world-famous art fair, created with the aim to support emerging Emirati talent. Artists and designers aged 18 and above were invited to recreate the ‘Wing’ shape that forms part of the Abu Dhabi Art logo, with the four winning designs for this year’s edition having now been selected. The four artists will receive a prize of AED5,000 each and a VIP invitation to attend Abu Dhabi Art which runs from November 8 to 11 this year. The winning creations will be also used to create innovative and exciting merchandise sold through The Shop at Manarat Al Saadiyat, exposing the designs to more than 20,000 international visitors during Abu Dhabi Art. The winners of this year’s Wings Project competition are Shaikha Aysha Saqer Al-Qasemi, Lateefa Mohammed Al-Nuaimi, Nour Obaid Al-Hefeiti, and Shaima Abdulrahman Al-Marzouqi. The winning designs drew inspiration from Emirati culture whilst childhood memories and playful games were also a dominant theme. Dyala Nusseibeh, Director of Abu Dhabi Art, said: “As part of the ongoing Abu Dhabi Art community programme, the Wings Project gives emerging creatives the opportunity to express their inventiveness and showcase their designs to an international audience. We were delighted to see the number of original submissions rise this year and were all inspired by 18

the ingenuity of the submissions that were put forward.” Emirati artist, Shaikha Aysha Saqer Al-Qasemi’s design is inspired by the colours of Abu Dhabi’s official emblem, pinpointing both the capital as a host and extending an invitation for art lovers to visit the fair. Lateefa Mohammed Al-Nuaimi’s design is called Connect The Wing, inspired by the classic ‘Connect The Dots’ puzzle from her childhood. Al-Nuaimi broke down the Wing logo into a sequence of dots but with non-sequential numbers, to create a contemporary twist on the design. Architectural engineer Nour Obaid Al-Hefeiti’s design divided the wing into two parts that complete each other, inspired by Vincent Van Gogh’s quote: “There are colours which cause each other to shine brilliantly, which form a couple which complete each other like man and woman”. Self-taught artist, Shaima Abdulrahman Al-Marzouqi, designed her Wing logo drawing inspiration from traditional Emirati clothing and the memory of her grandmother’s black shayla. Congrats to the winners! ✤

WAREHOUSE421: IN THE MAKING In celebration of 2017 being the UK/UAE 2017 Year of Creative Collaboration, Warehouse421, a dedicated space showcasing art and design exhibitions in Abu Dhabi, is set to welcome the regional debut of a cool exhibition titled In the Making. CURATED BY AWARD-WINNING BRITISH designers Barber and Jay Osgerby, and presented by The Design Museum in London, the exhibition will open its doors to public in Abu Dhabi on November 8 and will run for three months until February 11, 2018. The exhibition captures objects in the mid-manufacture phase, and puts the aesthetic of the unfinished centre stage. This is the first time the touring exhibition will be presented outside of the UK and Ireland, and for the UAE edition of the exhibition, Barber and Osgerby, have sourced new objects mid-manufacture and local to the region; including an oud, lent by Abu Dhabi-based music institution Bait Al Oud, as well as an uncropped book from CPI Books. In curating the exhibition, a fascinating collection of incomplete objects has been chosen by Barber and Osgerby – from a cricket bat and a tennis ball to a MacBook Pro – enabling visitors to go on an experiential journey of the creative manufacturing process, as they witness objects from their original or conceptualisation stage through to their final, recognisable form. “We have always been fascinated by the making process as it is an integral part of our work,” said Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby – curators of In the making. “We have curated an exhibition that will provide a platform to capture and reveal a frozen moment in the manufacturing process and unveils an everyday object in its unfinished state. Often the object is as beautiful, if not more so, than the finished product! We are delighted to bring In the Making to the United Arab Emirates, our first exhibition in the Middle East,” they added. On the exhibition’s opening day, 8 November, visitors will have the opportunity to participate in a masterclass where Jay Osgerby will engage the audience in a discussion on decoding the design process while sharing personal insights into some of the designers’ most iconic projects such as the Loop Table, the Tip Ton Chair and the Torch for the London 2012 Olympic Games. An excellent educational platform for students – In the Making will provide young minds with an engaging way to explore the theme of the exhibition. While children aged five and above will have the opportunity to learn about the objects on display and the making process through fun activity sheets, students can spend time reflecting on the theme with a 22

fact magazine

collection of publications on design and manufacturing, and all guests can look forward to seeing the visual journey of the production process of some of the items on display through a series of videos. The touring exhibition was designed by Universal Design Studio, the architecture and interiors practice founded by Barber and Osgerby and co-directed by Jason Holley and Hannah Carter Owers. ✤

hough it’s not as secret as it once was, many people in the Gulf have still not heard about the island of Sir Bani Yas. From the wondering wildlife to the panoramic views and the saltdomed hilltops, it very nearly feels like you’re in the heart of Africa. But, that is the beauty of this place. Sir Bani Yas Island is, in fact, a little over a two-hour drive followed by a 25-minute ferry ride away from Abu Dhabi International Airport. The 87km² island was first established as a reserve by the late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan when he became the first president of the UAE in 1971. Sheikh Zayed chose this island as a retreat as part of his Greening of the Desert programme. To this day, the island bares beautiful traces of its past when it was first inhabited by the Bani Yas tribe. Natural geological forces created the “salt dome” – gigantic dune tops that still make up much of its distinctive desert landscape. And as a result of Sheikh Zayed’s forward-thinking vision, Sir Bani Yas is proof that the UAE desert can be made more habitable for human settlement and provide a sanctuary for Arabia’s endangered wildlife, all at the same time. Something that history buffs will love, is that one of the oldest sites on the island is the

With one and two-bedroom options, you needn’t worry about taking a family vacay or visiting with a group of friends – you’ll all have plenty of space to yourselves. With traditional thatchroofed design, each villa offers the best of luxury amenities with an authentic touch of elegance and comfort. We particularly

loved the rustic chic design, combined with neutral, safarai-inspired tones and materials. From the comfort of your gorgeous bedroom with its magical four-poster bed, or the cushy, spacious living area and even the inviting patio, you can experience the wild wonders of savannah life from your very own private sanctuary that complements its natural surroundings with such sophistication. The bathtub is serious hotel goals whilst the added bonus of a kitchen and a huge dining area means that you can bring snacks or preprepared food from home – hello, midnight munchies! Having your own private hot tub or plunge pool (depending on which villa you choose) is also a huge bonus for afternoon dips when you’re too chilled-out to get up and walk to the pool. But when you do get a chance, the pool is somewhere you’ll definitely want to go and check out – and take a hundred pictures for the ‘gram. It’s an elegant oasis where you can unwind to the gentle lull of a desert breeze and at the same time, catch a rare glimpse of grazing gazelles and other island wildlife. The same can be said for breakfast time – it’s a part of the day that you don’t want to miss. The resort puts out food for the animals in the early a.m so when you take a seat at the picturesque Savannah Grill & Lounge, expect a camera-ready view to go with your first meal of the day, where we’d highly recommend a freshly-prepared omelette or a selection of yummy pastries with your choice of beverage. This is also a place that you’ll want to experience for dinner as the menu boasts tempting flavours of the African continent. If you love to let your taste buds explore, try the Sauteed Peri Peri Chicken Livers and the South-African style Lamb Chops served with mash potato and vegetables – just delish! fact magazine

Off the reserve and we find ourselves by an impressive white-sand beach, this is Anantara Al Yamm Villa Resort. Here, you’ll also find 30 incredibly luxurious villas; 15 on the beach and 15 overlooking the lush mangroves. If a secluded setting is what you want – that’s what you’ll find here. Our two-bedroom mangrovefacing villa is what beach house dreams are made of. We learn that the entire Barasti-modelled resort has been inspired by traditional fishing and pearl diving villages of the UAE, featuring breezy interior and exterior designs that reflect its beachside location. The bedrooms, much like the other resort, are HUGE. The master is decked out with one of the comfiest beds we’ve ever slept on and the other boasts equally delightful twin beds. Both rooms have large patio doors that lead out to the private plunge pool and what immediately strikes us is the quiet – which is the same at the Al Sahel Villa Resort – complete and utter silence with the odd chirps of crickets. If only we could have that EVERY DAY! You need to dedicate an entire morning or afternoon (or even a full day) just to spend by the pool or on the beach. Remember us mentioning how good the service is here? One of the pool waiters literally carried two massive bean bags down the beach for us, in a bid to make us feel more comfy next to the sea shore - a thoughtful gesture that we greatly appreciated (tanning whilst lying on a bean bag is what the hashtag #HolidayOnFleek was made for!). Now, let’s talk about another surprise. There is actually one more property on Sir Bani Yas Island. Enter Desert Islands Resort & Spa by Anantara. A fullfledged hotel that caters very well to families and those who may still want some life and bustle around them unlike the pin-drop silence that the villa resorts offer. What this means is that when you stay at any of the villa resorts, you have the option of visiting the hotel for activities, use of the spa, and, of course, the dining options. Friendly drivers will pick and drop off guests who wish to experience it ALL!

With that said, make your evening dinner plans at Amwaj restaurant and dine amidst a warm breeze to the soothing sound of the sea lapping the shore. Meaning ‘waves’ in Arabic, Amwaj is a true seafood destination offering a contemporary, rustic beachside setting. The relaxed living room ambience invites you to cosy into oversised chairs on the outdoor terrace and unwind to chill out music. A lavish seafood menu showcases the freshest local catches and imported favourites, some grilled to perfection and others presented in gourmet salads, complemented by an impressive cellar selection. In the cooler months, a.k.a right now, a crackling bonfire is set up beside the beach to toast marshmallows on, yum! Choosing which resort to stay in is a pleasant dilemma to have. But, one thing that we’d really tell you not to skimp on is your choice of outdoor activities on the island. Where to begin? First, an early morning Nature Walk is a must. You’ll spend 1.5 hours on the east side enclosure getting up close and personal with animals like the Beisa Oryx, Axis deer, Urial sheep, and Red Deer. If, like us, luck is on your side, you may very well get the chance to see a tower of giraffes getting their morning fuel fix - so bring those cameras as well as good shoes, sunglasses and a hat. A sunset Nature & Wildlife Drive will take you on a 4x4 adventure where you will lay eyes on some of the beautiful free-roaming wildlife, which includes predators such as the fierce Cheetah, the peacefully elegant Flamingo and grand Reticulated Giraffe; just to name a few! On both excursions, it is the expert guides that really make your time amongst the wildlife, worthwhile. They are knowledgeable on everything from the flora and fauna like various plant and tree species to knowing all the tricks of the trade in locating the animals, so that you can have a wholesome, memorable experience. Aside from this, you’re spoiled with the option to go land sailing, horse riding, mountain biking, paddle boarding, snorkelling, kayaking, deep sea fishing, or to take a culture and history tour and to practice archery or falconry amongst other thrilling activities. Not only is Sir Bani Yas Island the coolest eco-friendly travel option for a staycation in the UAE, it’s also one of the most breathtaking. Couples, this is one with romance written all over it; singletons, you and your friends will be well catered for with so many exciting activities. A long weekend at this resort is just what you need for a quick relaxation fix minus the trip to the airport and getting on a plane. ✤

ome to 315 guestrooms including 32 suites, large, flexible meeting spaces including 21 conference rooms and a 522-sqm Grand Ballroom, alongside a fantastic variety of restaurants and bars, a stunning spa with six treatment rooms, fitness centre, health club AND a rooftop swimming pool, it’s hard to believe that all of this is found in a central hotel amidst the bustle of downtown Abu Dhabi. It’s the ideal destination for both business and leisure visitors and is very close (literally, across the road) to Al Wahda Mall and the Corniche. The 5-star guest rooms and suites are some of the largest in the city, and they’re complete with first-class amenities like plush bedding, a well-stocked mini-bar, flat-screen TV and more. We stayed in a Superior King room and the very first piece of furniture that caught our attention was the oversized cushy sofa-chair. It’s where we perched with our mid-morning coffee and when the need to check emails came calling. It’s also where we casually napped and enjoyed daytime TV – this huge couch was the one thing we’d liked to have taken home with us – alas, too big to fit in the suitcase! floor-to-ceiling windows boast far-reaching views of the local neighbourhoods. The room has simple yet very modern décor giving it a contemporary feel with feature lights and soft furnishings. The bathroom is also large with a mammoth bathtub, a walk-in rain shower and a separate rest room. We took a long soak in the tub with lush amenities and came out feeling refreshed and revived, ready for our dinner at the iconic JW Steakhouse. The restaurant is a contemporary take on a classic American steakhouse but with a high-end feel thanks to its sophisticated décor which creates a warm and intimate feeling. The venue has its own signature vibe with masculine, high chairs, leather upholstery and wooden placemats – we feel quite relaxed and ready. On this night, we’re trying the very special Chef’s Tasting Menu: a gastronomic journey of eight courses paired with a distinct beverage, all courtesy of Chef de Cuisine Stephan Benkendorff and his team. Word of warning: go hungry because this intersecting array of beautiful dishes teamed with a different, unique liquid concoction for each course will, simply, blow your mind. We start with an assortment of homemade breads, onion and cornbread, accompanied by three different kinds of butter — salted, smoked paprika, and chilli. Now, if there was ever a time in life that we decided to live off carby goodness, THIS is the bread and butter we’d want to satisfy our cravings with. Highlights of the meal included the Heirloom Tomato & Burrata, a beautifully vibrant presentation of different coloured tomato with a to-die-for creamy burrata cheese – the surprise here is a mysterious tomato sorbet disguised as a… we’re going to leave it a secret for you to find out. Indeed, the playful trickery and innovation continued into other dishes such as the flavourful Parsnip Puree and

Beef Cheek Tortellini, the lemon mint foam-infused Loch Fine Salmon and, of course, the succulent 28-day dry-aged Kettyle’s Northern Irish Grass Fed Aberdeen Angus. The drinks are just as impressive, with a Tomato Gin Fizz, Cucumber & Lime Spritzer, Carrot Ginger Beer and most elegant vinos accompanying the food. The standout has to be the Cedarwood Smoked Black Bramble, prepared tableside on a drinks’ trolley by an expert mixologist. SO good. Just when we thought it was over, out came a most unusual yet pretty dish – a simple red cabbage sorbet atop a block of ice to cleanse the palate before dessert. A bold choice of ingredient and the drink on the side is a Cranberry & Shiso Cosmo. We learn that it’s the deep purple Japanese shisho from which Chef Stephan was inspired to create this dish - genius! Next, we were invited to get up out of our seats and walk over to the exclusive cellar area where a stunning presentation of cheeses, fruits, nuts and lip-licking jam and chutneys awaited to be devoured with strung crisp bread. The idea of being invited into this whole new world – a venue wihin a venue – was simply the highlight of the evening. It didn’t end there. Back at the table and a large whiteboard had taken over the top and we soon learned why. This surface played background to the chef’s signature New York Cheesecake which he prepares live at your table, resulting in a canvas of delicious raspberry coulis, summer fruits, refreshing sorbet and a hazelnut crumble, all complementing the cheesecake with its Graham cracker crust and mouthwatering filling – can you say hashtag Dessert Goals? Of course, there are plenty of creative surprises in every dish too. This is a restaurant that really prides itself on the quality of its food but also on the friendly, fast and attentive service as well. Kuzbara, the hotel’s all-day-dining venue serves up an impressive breakfast along with varied lunch options and delicious dinners featuring the best of Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cuisine. Velocity Bar is also well worth a visit, a cool sports bar spread over two floors with large TV screens, a DJ and excellent upscale bar food like chicken wings, lobster and burgers. Be sure to visit the gorgeous Saray Spa for some indulgent me-time. D

ubai is well-known around the world for not doing things by halves. The world’s biggest mall? Check. The world’s tallest building? Check. Sometimes though, it’s nice to find places in this grand city that boast a more boutique and intimate feel. And when it’s quality, comfort and privacy that you want, the Manzil Downtown Dubai will deliver. Like its sister property, Vida Downtown Dubai, just around the corner, this gorgeous hotel blends together stylish interior with tasteful touches of Arabesque decor. Our check in is swift and although the hotel is very busy, the staff are polite and professional. What we’ve fallen in love with is the smell of

oud in the lobby; it gives a regal yet warm and inviting vibe (and we’re currently regretting not asking about the brand name of the mesmerising smell). The 197-room hotel is bustling with travellers, business people and local guests. Its pull of a diverse crowd is only testament to its perfect location, close to Business Bay and the main highways - giving excellent links to tourist hotspots and many office areas too. Eight floors up and we enter the Deluxe Room; a sleek and minimalist space which impresses straight away. You have a choice between booking a room with a view of the towering Burj Khalifa or the relaxed swimming pool - both great options. Ours is looking down

on the hotel’s pool as well as views of the surrounding Downtown area. It’s a peaceful sight and one that we’re sure every tourist or business traveller would be happy to wake up to! The colour scheme consists of neutral shades - brown, beige and white. There’s lots of bright light through the large windows and what we love most is the mural art work on the wall behind the bed. There’s a huge flat screen TV and gorgeous Moroccan-inspired lights hanging in the corner of the room. The bathroom is large and has both a rain shower and giant tub, so should you want a long, hot soak we definitely recommend it. The rooms also have a large desk with speedy, complimentary Wi-Fi which is a big plus. If you don’t want to be in your room the whole time though, the Tawasal desk is a contemporary business hub situated in the hotel lobby. It is available 24-hours-a-day, allowing guests to access a computer and enabling them to connect to the Internet and a wireless printer. It seems they’ve thought of everything! As mentioned, the hotel is in one of the best locations in Dubai on Mohammed Bin Rashid Boulevard, overlooking Souk Al Bahar, and is within walking distance to Burj Khalifa, The Dubai Mall and The Dubai Fountains - talk about options, we were spoiled. The Boulevard is impressive with wide footpaths (a rarity in the UAE) and is constantly buzzing, particularly at night when the hotel and many surrounding venues become extremely busy. An evening stroll here will take you past treelined streets dotted with fairy lights - it’s picturesque. If you don’t feel like walking, you’ll be happy to know that Manzil has just introduced vintage bicycles for guests to use during their stay. You can hop on and ride down the road to Vida Downtown or explore the area without the stress of the Dubai traffic. One of the best things about this boutique haven is the breakfast and we love that they have plenty of options for healthy eating. The presentation of the food alone is superb. Granola and berries are served up in cute Mason jars alongside small plates of cut fruit and baskets of baked goods. There are freshly squeezed green juices in large glass carafes on offer plus more hearty options such as whole wheat pancakes with almond butter and quinoa porridge with almonds and dates. Both of which taste delicious, making for great fuel to help you start your day. fact magazine

If you aren’t so worried about watching your waistline, then there are lots of full breakfast options such as tasty omelettes with oozing cheddar cheese and as many sides, to go with the eggs, as you can dream of. Manzil also features other excellent dining venues including Boulevard Kitchen, an all-day dining restaurant serving food from across the Middle East along with modern fare, freshly prepared in an open plan kitchen. We head here for dinner and dine on exceptional food including the creamy burrata salad, fresh grilled sea bass, and the tastiest kunafa we’ve eaten in a LONG time - what.a.winner! We wash this down with a cup of chai karak and continue to people watch - a beautiful winter diner setting. The first evening was SO good that we returned again for meal number two and, lo-and-behold, the food was just as delicious the second time around. A special shoutout has to go to our waitress on both nights, Masaa. Her friendly approach, warm demeanour and overall knowledge of the menu was superb. No ask was too big or too small for this lovely young lady - she showed equal positive attitude when we requested a phone charger and also when we went with her main course recommendations. Bravo! The Courtyard is also a great option for unwinding and offers shisha and an Arab-fusion beverage menu featuring regional teas and other specialties such as Arabic afternoon tea which can be enjoyed al fresco. Of course, it’s not a staycation unless you spend at least one entire afternoon by the pool, right? And Manzil Downtown has a stunning one. It fits right in with the hotel’s chilled-out vibe with comfy loungers and a few shaded cabanas too. Tanning is bliss whilst the pool itself will please those who like to swim lengths. The only dilemma you’ll face here is when you should leave - afternoon nap GOALS. Service was consistent throughout our entire stay and we loved the cosy feel of the property, the easy access to surrounding attractions and the utterly helpful staff. Our advice is simple: give the crowd-packed resorts of Dubai a rest and opt for a more classy and down-to-earth staycayion choice at Manzil Downtown. You’ll be pleasantly surprised at what you find! ✤

BIG SCREEN Justice League WHAT’S IT ABOUT?

Inspired by Superman’s selfless sacrifice for humanity, Bruce Wayne pairs up with his newfound ally, Diana Prince, to face an even greater enemy. Whilst Batman and Wonder Woman unite to recruit a team of metahumans to help fight against this newly awakened threat. Can the unprecedented league of heroes save the planet from catastrophe?

DIRECTOR: Zack Snyder CAST: Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Gal Gadot

WHY IT’S WORTH WATCHING?

Shaping up to be the biggest cinematic event in Warner Brother’s superhero history, Justice League is a direct sequel to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. The film witnesses the coming together of Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman, under the helm of the legendary Zack Snyder and Joss Whedon. With the world in imminent danger, it is up to Batman and Wonder Woman and their team of metahuman heroes, including The Flash, Cyborg and Aquaman to protect humanity as the Justice League. Featuring a much more mature Wonder Woman and a more hopeful Batman, Justice League is an interesting product of two directors. The film manages to shake things up on the superhero scene while staying true to the DC legacy. If anything, watch it for Jason Mamoa’s flawless portrayal of Aquaman - drool central.

Highlights

The film manages to shake things up on the superhero scene while staying true to the DC legacy.

Lady Bird WHAT’S IT ABOUT:

With her family struggling after the loss of her husband’s job, Marion McPherson, a California nurse, steps up to keep her family afloat. The film follows Marion as she tries to make ends meet while maintaining a turbulent relationship with her equally loving, strong-willed and deeply opinionated teenage daughter.

– Justice League

DIRECTOR: Greta Gerwig CAST: Saoirse Ronan, Laurie Metcalf

WHY IT’S WORTH WATCHING?

An incredibly raw and gritty tale of family, society and adolescence, Greta Gerwig’s directorial debut envelops you in genuine, deeply-felt emotion. Covering semi-autobiographical ground, Gerwig relates the story of a confused teenage girl in Sacramento, full to the brim with lofty aspirations of where she’ll be heading to college. Clashing frequently with mother Marion (Laurie Metcalf), Lady Bird (Saoirse Ronan) has a very different sense of the world than her mother. Exhibiting exceptional attention to detail and a jaunty pace, the soulbarring dramedy grants all of its characters equal respect while being downright frank and funny. 62

Scream Above the Sounds

By Stereophonics

While alternative rock has always been our go-to for impromptu jam sessions, there’s no denying that Stereophonics are truly slaying the game! Fortunately for us, the Welsh rock band is all set to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Word Gets Around with Scream Above the Sounds. The anthemic tenth studio album blends a number of different sounds to create a very contemporary record. All In One Night, an observational track, reflects the big, bold rock songwriting that made us fall in love with the band in the first place. While the track may sound a little lackluster when compared to their previous work, it still holds its own. Written from the people’s point of view on the changing climate of the world, all the songs on the album carry a sense of release. Beginning with a brave opening statement, Caught by the Wind brings together catchy lyricism and eager cheers for a definite crowd pleaser. A record that shows just how far the Welsh quartet has come.

COUNTRY/ POP

Glasshouse

Following the tragic demise of her husband after a grueling fight against pancreatic cancer, journalist and author Joyce Maynard recounts their relationship. Capturing their whirlwind romance, a marriage cut short by tragedy and Joyce’s return to singlehood on new terms, it’s a heartbreaking yet lifeaffirming take on true love.

By Jessie Ware The queen of lovelorn anthems and heartbreak elegance, Jessie Ware is back with her third studio album and it’s going to give you all the feels! Glasshouse is very close to the songstress’ heart. An increasingly personal record, it’s packed with stunning vocals and vivid storytelling. Floating over an undulating synth melody, the complex track Midnight beautifully captures the magic and terror that comes with falling in love. Reaching the upper limits of her range, the singer exhibits an explosiveness we have never heard from her before. Her subtle, steely and sensual voice documents a tumultuous relationship in the intriguing single, Selfish Love. Bridging the gap between R&B, soul and the sounds of British dance music, Jessie Ware’s style is a gift that just keeps on giving.

The 2018 X-TRAIL has an option of both advanced petrol and diesel engines. The 2.5-litre, four cylinder engine option delivers 170HP and 233 Nm or torque. This combined with the automatic transmission and four-wheel drive ensures impressive handling and cornering ability with one always feeling in complete control with plenty of power in reserve. With enthusiastic drivers all around us on the roads of Beirut, we were quietly thankful for this model’s impressive safety features. THE PROPERTY BROTHERS If you’re into DIY TV, you’ve definitely heard of the twins that make home dreams come true. FACT’s quick Q&A with the world-renowned design and décor gurus, the Property Brothers, will give you a taste of what’s coming up in Season 9 of the popular show airing on HGTV Arabia, this month. Meet Jonathan and Drew Scott…

PROPERTY BROTHERS The Property Brothers are determined to help couples find, buy and transform extreme fixer-uppers into the ultimate forever home, and since it’s hard to see beyond a dated property’s shortcomings, they’re using state-of-the-art CGI to reveal their vision of the future. Can they convince these hesitant homebuyers to take a radical risk? And can they complete their ambitious project on time and on budget? Hi guys! Your jobs take you to different cities all over the U.S., how does working in each location differ? JS: It’s fascinating doing construction in all these different cities because construction in LA is completely different than New Orleans and even different from New York. So you have to understand the local market, the climate, what people want in a home and that’s how you develop your plan. Where do you draw your design inspiration from? DS: We travel all over the world and we pull inspiration for our designs and our ideas from anywhere we go, whether it’s a castle in Scotland or an old cathedral or even an industrial park. I mean, we love the fact that we can pull from any aspect of our lives and our travel to put something into a design for our homeowners. JS: Design is always evolving. Some things come back which is 86

fact magazine

exciting to see, some things we never want to come back, because those things are gone for a purpose. But it’s nice to blend those things together and find something that works for the homeowners that we’re dealing with. It’s nice when Drew comes to me and says, “Hey you know what? I saw something when I was at some resort” or “I was at a hotel, what about doing something like this in a residential application?” And I’ll take that as a challenge and then I’ll find a way to make it work in a space. DS: We are always looking for ways to inspire ourselves and everything we do in our lives and in turn that’s going to inspire everybody to watch our shows. JS: Would you say that I inspire you? DS: You do. Kind of just a little bit (whispering). Many people around the world live in small abodes. What are some tips for maximising space and increasing efficiency when you don’t have the luxury of room? DS: You have to be really smart with design when you’re working with a small space. Multifunction pieces are a great way to maximise the use of your space. Even a small space can be stunning and it depends on what sort of features you put into it. It could be your light fixture, it could be the colour palette on your walls, and something simple can go a long way. JS: The smaller the space, the more cleaver the solutions you have to find. Lighter, brighter and you always want to make sure you’re looking for multi-functioning pieces. Bigger is not always better when it comes to your living space, it’s all about character and what you’re putting in for inspiration. ✤

ON THE MENU •

FOODIE FAVOURITE Cho Gao at the Crowne Plaza Abu Dhabi has become somewhat of an institution, having served up a menu of Pan-Asian classics for the best part of a decade now, enticing those looking for an authentic Asian dining experience. FACT sent Out & About UAE’s David Tapley to meet the team that keep the restaurant’s food game strong! fact magazine

• ON THE MENU

M

uch of Cho Gao’s lasting appeal lies in the restaurants charming space, capped in wood and featuring distinct Chineseinspired motifs that represent a successful hybrid of traditional tea house and ancient temple. The narrow entranceway opens out into an intimate dining room separated by wooden screens, while the rear of the restaurant is home to a small sushi bar and the ceiling is hung with traditional paper lanterns and wooden birdcages. Illumination is provided via small candles placed in hidden alcoves which highlight the artifacts throughout the room - temple gongs, Buddha statues, spice baskets and intricate wooden carvings. The menu comes to us from outlet Chef Areewan Larpnikornkul, a native of Thailand and one of the few women leading the kitchen of an awardwinning restaurant in the UAE. When asked to describe her approach to creating Cho Gao’s new menu, Chef Areewan informs us that she imagined herself as a guest and tried to construct a menu around what she would want to order. Offering a mix of Chinese, Vietnamese, Thai and Indonesian specialities, Cho Gao takes diners on a journey through the very best of South East Asian cuisine. Expect crispy spring rolls, skewered satay, soups (the Laksa especially shouldn’t be missed) and fresh salads. With the name Cho Gao literally translating as ‘rice market’ in Vietnamese, it does feel as though diners have the pick of the very best of Asia right at their fingertips. With the pronounced flavours of ginger, lemongrass and lime featuring prominently, Chef Areewan tells us that the plating has been purposefully kept clean and simplistic so that the flavours remain as the main focus. Appetisers are consistently good, with the Wasabi Prawns being the definite highlight; crispy fried gulf prawns, a coating of spicy Sriracha and a serving of tangy passion fruit salsa. The dim sum (which can be either fried or steamed upon request) represent thoroughly moorish parcels, delightful in both flavour and texture and with the recent addition of a new sushi menu, we can’t recommend the Caramel Maki enough! Topped with a crispy crab caramel that brings a subtle sweetness to the dish, this juxtaposition is a unique innovation for Abu Dhabi and is likely to be a big draw. Chef Areewan recommends the Spicy Papaya Salad as her favourite item on the menu due it’s

blend of salty crab and anchovy, but we much prefer the nuttiness of the Pad Thai, which is a generously portioned plate of noodles that offers particularly memorable flavours. Desserts are also a great showcase for the chef’s talents, providing a mix of traditional (Lychee Panacotta or Green Lime Cheesecake) and the signature Melting Chocolate Ball on Banana Cake – in which a hot chocolate sauce is poured onto a white chocolate sphere, causing it to open like the petals of a lotus flower and reveal the banana cake hidden within – y.u.m.m.y! Cho Gao at the Crowne Plaza Abu Dhabi continues to offer good value for money and some very appealing promotions, the next of which will be the Loi Krathong (full moon) festival running from November 3 to 15. With a legion of regular customers it would seem that Chef Areewan’s mantra is really beginning to ring true, stating that “I love when guests come to the restaurant then leave with smile.” We certainly did! ✤

W

e’re greeted by a friendly member of staff who brings over an impressive menu: it has been recently revamped to offer even more enticing food, including more creative, vibrant and tasty starters, entrees and mains. There’s something on this menu for everyone with lots of meat and fish options along with mouthwatering salads and pastas for vegetarians too. It’s a tough decision to make as there are simply TOO many things that sound good to devour. We settle on one of the antipasto plates to share while sipping a refreshing aperitif overlooking the pool. The antipasto plate is delicious and gorgeously presented, consisting of different cured meats, cherry tomatoes, grilled zucchini, olives and the tastiest bruschetta we’ve had in a while. This is the perfect dish for sharing and not too filling – great to begin with if you’re planning to order a heavy main. We can’t decide between a pasta and risotto for the main affair so we get both – when in doubt, order it all! We savour the crab, rocket and lemon risotto which is packed full of flavor and is surprisingly light. This dish is a must try and is served with a generous amount of crab which we LOVE. We then choose the spinach and ricotta ravioli and the lobster spaghettini. Both are sensational dishes; the first is served with a burnt butter and sage sauce which complements the pasta perfectly, whilst the latter is equally good served with fresh lobster and a shellfish sauce – ideal for seafood fans. It must be said that this is some of the best pasta we’ve tasted – fresh and super light. It’s evident that a lot of care and attention has gone into reparing the food. 94

The portions are generous but not too big, and after our main and entrée we were left feeling quite full. There are so many tempting dessert options on the menu but we opt for a scoop of raspberry sorbet which is presented neatly with strawberries and white chocolate. The food was some of the best Italian cuisine we have eaten, the presentation and service were excellent and we love the chic décor of this venue too. Custom Relaxation Looking for treatments suited exactly to your needs? Book a session at Remède Spa in The St. Regis Abu Dhabi to ease your mind, body and soul. Angela Beitz gets rejuvenated from her head down to her heels…

T

here’s nothing nicer than a great spa treatment and allowing yourself some well-earned “me time”, but sometimes you really want to tap into major concerns – be it muscle pain, de-stressing or dry skin – the customised treatments at Remède Spa are here to save the day. The beautiful spa is a real sanctuary for guests looking to unwind in one of the 11 treatment rooms, the wet area or the relaxation lounge. Think white marble, elements of gold and timber and large windows. It’s a luxurious space that you would expect from a brand like The St Regis. I’m trying the Remède Customised Massage and the Remède Customised Facial, both 60-minute treatments. After being greeted warmly and given a cold refresher towel and welcome drink, the gorgeous changing room is a sight for sore eyes. I slip into a robe and go through to the treatment room which is super spacious and serenely decorated. There are three different oils to choose from for the massage and since my body is very tight and stiff and I really need to unwind, it’s the muscle rub oil that makes the cut. Being a customised massage, this treatment allows for you to have your needs really focused on so you can tell the therapist beforehand where you want most attention and what areas are troubling you. I ask for

96

SPA & WELLNESS •

a deep tissue massage with lymphatic drainage focusing on the neck, shoulders and back. My therapist works hard on the tired and knotted muscles using stretching techniques and strong strokes to thoroughly help me to relax. With the lymphatic drainage, the therapist pushed hard on my lymph nodes (such as underarms) to release the blockages in my body. A great deal of attention is paid to the upper back and neck where there is a lot of deep-seated tension. By the end of the massage I feel completely perky and brand new again. It’s then time for the Remède customised facial which is personalised to suit my dry, tired and sensitive skin, using products from Elemis which feel fresh and hydrating. The face is triple-cleansed using a very rich creamy cleanser and then we move onto exfoliation using a papaya and pineapple enzyme scrub which kills dead skin cells. Once my skin is clean, a light steam using warm washcloths is done and then all the nasties are removed from my pores but the therapist is extra careful not to unsettle my skin while doing this. It works especially well and my complexion is already clearer. This is an important step to ask for in a facial as the environment can really dry skin out and build congestion on your pores. I’m then given an uplifting facial massage with a gorgeous serum before a thick hydrating mask is applied, and while this is doing its magic, my therapist massages my arms. To complete the treatment, the oxygen machine is used on my face and neck to plump up the skin. The facial has worked wonders for my skin, leaving it bright and glowing. I continue this state of bliss in the relaxation room with apricot tea looking out over the Corniche. Having a customised treatment is a real plus and at Remède Spa you can expect instant results. ✤

CITY INSIDER

David Tapley

Founder & Editor, Out & About UAE

Hi David! Tell us your three favourite cultural hotspots in the capital and why... Any visitor to Abu Dhabi should not miss out on the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, a stunning piece of architecture that’s as much a symbol of Abu Dhabi as the Emirates Palace or the beaches. I would highly recommend a visit at sunset to see the mosque as it transforms from day to night. Though not in the capital, I love escaping to Al Ain for the weekend. Affectionately referred to as the ‘garden city’, Al Ain is the cultural heartland of Abu Dhabi where you can visit the oasis, camel market or the peak of the second highest mountain in the UAE - Jebel Hafeet. Finally, I’m looking forward to the opening of the Louvre with great 98

fact magazine

anticipation. This new addition to the capital’s arts and culture scene is going to be spectacular. Describe Abu Dhabi’s dining scene and some of your standout venues... Abu Dhabi’s dining scene has really upped its game in recent years with plenty of exciting options, no matter your budget. Places like Al Maryah Island and The Hub at World Trade Centre are bringing lots of exciting new concepts for diners in the capital. If I had to choose some of the best, it would have to be the Indian-inspired cuisine at Tamba which also has some of THE BEST cocktails in the city. Catch offers beautiful seafood with a view and Chef Roudy’s food is immaculately plated like works of art. For

Pan-Latin you can’t go wrong with BU or the newly opened Toro Toro and for something a little more special it’s got to be 99 Sushi or Zuma. Share with us some of your personal and professional goals for 2018... 2017 has been a fantastic year for me and I really do hope for more of the same next year. My collaborations with both Fact Magazine and What’s Cooking UAE have really helped to showcase the worth of Out & About UAE as a brand and I hope to expand upon this in 2018. I want to keep sharing my experiences in the hope that it encourages others to do the same. I hope to work on that work/ blog/life balance and create some more time to spend with family and friends.
