Whether it’s a casual weekend game, an evening out on the green, or something you want to learn from scratch, golf can be a real stress-buster! Checklist
Level Out: The area you choose when you plan a party outdoors should be flat enough for tables and chairs, and the terrain should allow for guests to mingle comfortably without the fear of stumbling. The Theme: Decide on a theme, if you want one, then make, buy, or borrow any decorations you may need. Don’t forget to inform guests on your invitations. Line up any help you need: Consider hiring a professional, a part-time student, or anyone who can help with preor post-party cleaning, or to pass drinks or appetisers, replenish buffet food, tidy up, and generally take some weight off your shoulders. Create a playlist: Whether it’s the best of summer songs, DJ recommended chill-out tunes, or something relative to your guests’ personal tastes, music is key. Either set up speakers outside, or use a portable sound system to play your music. Protect your party from bugs: Though this isn’t really a problem in the Gulf, it’s best to be safe than sorry. You need to keep your food bug-free so set up a buffet table indoors, or use mesh plate covers if you plan to keep your food outside. You can also use citronella candles, or put bug-repellent fuel in torches, to provide ambient lighting and keep flying insects at bay.
Foodie Faves
Plan a casual menu. Serving food and drink that is appropriate for outdoor parties can really make or break the fun vibes. So, getting it right is essential.

Grilling: A bbq is the perfect choice because it allows for smoke to travel into open air, but also helps to lure all your hungry guests to the table. Meats, chicken, seafood and some veggies can all be cooked on a bbq, so even if you have fussy eaters – everyone will be catered to. Fresh fruits & salads: Bright and bold colours play into the garden theme and the aim here is to take advantage of the season by choosing ingredients that are most available and nutritious at this time of year. Though the Gulf doesn’t really
OUTDOORS have seasonal produce, imported autumnal products like nuts, beetroot, figs, mushrooms, sweetcorn, walnuts, pomegranate, pumpkin and cranberries, are just some of the foods at their best right now. Self-serve drink station: This is a party must and deserves a long table all to itself. Arrange a variety of beverage options with all the necessary accessories. Popular drinks for garden parties include fruit punch, iced tea and lemonade. Make sure all drinks are served at the temperature they’re supposed to be! Cold desserts: Remember, in the GCC, winter just means less hotter and humid than usual. So, ice creams, sorbets, milkshakes and homemade ice pops are still a must!
“ I G O T O N A T URE T O B E S OO T HE D A N D HE A LE D A N D T O H AVE M Y S EN S E S PU T I N T UNE ONC E MORE . ” The Décor
Whether it’s casual or a little more formal, having one table that’s specifically set up for dining is a must. This keeps eating time in one place, meaning more good conversation with your guests and less mess everywhere else. Centrepiece: This is your statement piece – think of it as jewellery to go with the main outfit. If you want elegance try an edible Crudité Centerpiece that recalls a vegetable patch filled with a rainbow of bitesized crudités. Or go for something simple and modern with a floral potted centerpiece. If you want trendy, try the easy, inexpensive solution of gathering clear apothecary bottles and filling them with lamp oil and wicks. Arrange the bottles, safely, in the centre, covered by a large hurricane vase. Shaded areas: It’s all about the lighting. You don’t want the sun to be making your guests squint all the time, nor do you want them to strain their eyes to see. Use hanging umbrellas for something different as a way
to create shade, or put up a canopy, tent, or even chose to host the party in a gazebo – it’s all about thinking out of the box to bring a sense of occasion. Outdoor furniture: We’re thinking rustic tables, wooden benches, foldout chairs, sunbeds, comfy cushions and everything in between. Having the right outdoor furniture can really add a comfort value that guests will appreciate. If there’s grass – perfect. Lay down large thick blankets with cooler sheets on top and decorate with garden pillows for comfort.
Product Picks Here are some bits and bobs that would be ideal to use at a garden party…
Accessories: We’re talking tableware, tree hangings, dessert stands, drink glasses, and anything used to decorate the surroundings. If your party is going on into the evening, use lots of cool lanterns with candles inside or string lighting, hung haphazardly on walls and branches, to create an inviting mood. Opt for the new milk bottle-style glasses for serving drinks, with funky straws.
Garden Games
When it comes down to it, there’s no outdoor party without a ton of awesome games. This is where you can really DIY and get creative! Use what you have: Assess the mood at your party and if guests are relaxing and prefer a chilled atmosphere, just whip out a deck of cards and gather around with drinks for some quick, fun games. If you want to play something that doesn’t require much effort yet still has an element of skill and competitiveness, try penny can, made famous by the hit TV show Cougar Town. And if everyone’s up and ready, get some washable marker pens and draw out large different coloured circles. What for? You guessed it – yard Twister! Larger than life: If you’ve got some cardboard boxes lying around, cut numerous large squares and write a letter on each one – voila, garden Scrabble anyone? Don’t forget, there are plenty of online websites that sell giant games like Connect 4 and Jenga, and if you fancy yourself a handy person, you can make your own through watching tutorials. Get into teams: Get absolutely everyone involved and go for the classics like charades, musical statues and musical chairs – these games get people energised and in a fun spirit – that’s what you want for a successful garden party. ✤

Originally plying their trade from the jetty at Dubai Creek Golf Club, taking tourists up on breathtaking aerial tours of Dubai, Seawings now flies the length and breadth of the Emirates, from Sir Bani Yas to Ras Al Khaimah and all the stunning landscape in between. “Seawings was founded in Dubai in 2007 by the company’s CEO, Stuart Wheeler,” explains Seawings’ Marketing Manager, Darren Brews. “He saw a potential for a new and unique way to showcase Dubai and its incredible progress from the air.” The company currently operates three Cessna Caravan 208 Amphibious aircraft. ARTS
“

relief but a permanent haunting too. The duality

”
your perceptions and feelings. And very alive.
As far back as she can remember, Mioara has had a strong sense of observation and a critical eye for aesthetics. “I started studying art in Romania under the communist era, when expressing yourself was conceptually very limited so, I was quickly disappointed,” she recalls. “But, I continued to be interested by the arts and studied it at a Masters level, for my own pleasure.” Mioara has come a long way with a perfected technique that has allowed for her work to be showcased in a number of exhibitions with the AD Arts Collective. As for her tools, Mioara’s choice of style is canvas-based. “I definitively love to work with oils for the quality of the colour, the brilliance and the texture,” she says. “But for the moment, I have to work more with acrylics and other mixed mediums because I’m working at home. I work on big size canvases, the smallest being one metre by one metre.” What strikes us is the positivity in Mioara’s work. Her use of colour and strokes produces elegant and attractive paintings – where does this energy come from? “The artist lives by perception so everything is about feeling,” Mioara says. “I love the manifestation of creation in anything around me and I’m listening to this reverberation into my soul, trying to give it a shape that I can share. “I am continuously amazed by life and very attentive to things that arrive by coincidence, taking each occurrence as a gift to learn something about the miracle of life,” she adds. “When I am painting,
I do it in an inner state of profound humility. I never force or impose myself to work, but when that energy comes, I don’t stop until the piece is finished,” Mioara says. Mioara moved to Abu Dhabi just last year and has since taken part in events and activities organised by AD Arts Collective – a group of enthusiastic people who love art and make the efforts to promote and exhibit the art work of expatriates in the capital. “I find that cultural life in Abu Dhabi is amazing it’s very effervescent,” Mioara says. Despite this, does Mioara face any challenges being an artist in the UAE? ““I live in a very cosmopolitan place so the challenges are like everywhere,” she expIains “I know that nothing is easy when you first start it, but there’s a place for everyone under the sun, I truly believe that. “Here, I feel a very strong presence of things being commercial, which is not a real target for me,” Mioara adds. “I prefer that someone is emotionally or intellectually interested in my work even if they’re not interested to buy it. “I think it’s important, for us, as artists, and it’s our role too, to educate the public,” she says. The life and work of many great artists have inspired Mioara from a young age. Some of them by the luxury of decorative details like that of Austrian painter Gustav Klimt’s work, and others by their minimalistic style like Romanian sculptor, painter and photographer Constantin Brâncuși (who Mioara describes as her national pride). ➻

ARTS
Then there’s the likes of Austrian painter Egon Schiele, whose pencil lines were straight out of an artist’s dream. Mioara says: “Behind the different styles and works, I get the courage to express myself, especially when I understand the essential of the freedom in art. Art is the place where you can be true to yourself.” Mioara first showcased her work in Chennai, India – a place that is very close to her heart. “In India, besides the fact it was the place where I found myself, spiritually, it was the very first time I exposed my work,” she recalls. “This is the place where my soul woke up and paintings turned from a hobby into a necessity.” This is also where she learned the art of mehndi (henna), which soon inspired her work. “I converted mehndi onto my paintings where this intricate repetition of patterns symbolie, for me, the mental and spiritual human complexity,” Mioara explains. Through her many exhibitions, Mioara has tried to showcase different works, including her symbolist or figurative pieces, however, more recently, her artistic direction has been towards abstract. Her first solo exhibition in Abu Dhabi was titled The Blue Silence at The Space Gallery. When we ask Mioara if she has any advice for upcoming artists, she humbly replies: “Who am I to give advice to anyone? Keeping your eyes wide open should be the way in life for anyone, young and old. It’s important to look inside and express your inner self,” she continues. “Everyone is unique so everyone has something unique to share with others.” Mioara’s artistic goals for the near future are to participate in more festivals and solo exhibitions. “I will take with serenity, whatever life has prepared for me,” she says. With that positive attitude and outlook, the only way for Mioara and her artwork is up! ✤

As an artist-led organisation we’ve found that art-lovers and collectors value being able to talk to the artists about their journeys, their inspiration and their technique.”

Emily’s startlingly modern and colorful work consists of multiple layers of acrylic paint, interlaced with paraffin, resin, gold and silver leaf. This contemporary art form achieves remarkable visual depth which has the simultaneous effect of mesmerising and thrilling the observer. Emily personally developed this unique style of art, a form of multi-media, which progressively evolved through years of extensive experimentation until she eventually found the final technique that she finds satisfying. Having lived in the Middle East for over 25 years, Emily admits a fascination for the sensual shapes, colours and designs of Arabic, Moorish and Byzantine architecture, and communicates this passion through her work. Director: Danny Boyle cast: Michael Fassbender, Kate Winslet, Seth Rogan, Sarah Snook, Jeff Daniels, Katherine Waterston. Why it’s worth watching? This is sort of a big deal. It’s one of the most anticipated films of the year, and rightly so. After all, the story is based on the late Apple CEO Steve Jobs, whose life has strangely become a massive obsession for the world’s media over the past few years. Just weeks after he passed, Walter Isaacson released Jobs’ biography, based on hundreds of interviews with his family members, friends, colleagues, competitors, and enemies. This was an honest and clear picture of a man who was an iconic visionary and someone who longed to be the Citizen Kane or Birdman of the tech world. The film shows exactly this. Writer Aaron Sorkin, director Danny Boyle, and lead star Michael Fassbender give their subject the incredible, wildly creative, and monumental show that he deserves, but all along the reality of a staggering ego, a volley of insults and ideas, and the monstrous silicon chip on the cold shoulder, helps to draw on the real life portrayals of Apple’s co-founder, and the legacy he’s left behind. If it’s entertainment you want, Steve Jobs will deliver.

Honeymoon
By Lana Del Ray
Last month saw the latest album release from sultry singer Lana Del Ray. Already known for her mournful, lovelorn vocal style, this album represents perhaps the purest distillation of the Lana Del Ray experience. The pop-friendly abandon of High by the Beach will have the song firmly stuck in your head, for better or worse, for the rest of the day, but the soulful ambiance of Music to Watch Boys To is the kind of thing you could drift away to in a cool breeze on a Californian beach – absolutely beautiful. The eponymous track, Honeymoon could be the opening track of a David Lynch movie – one in which the beautiful jilted lover kills her husband and his younger mistress. It defines the album well, being that bittersweet combination of romance and heartbreak. The whole album is a fine demonstration of the fact that even tragic love can be beautiful. Not the most uplifting album, it is most certainly soul-stirring.

Lee Child’s Jack Reacher series has been incredibly popular, inspiring a movie with Jack being played by non other than notorious adrenaline junkie Tom Cruise, so we were super excited to hear of a new, thrilling addition to the series. Make Me sees Jack at a loss with nowhere to go and endless amounts of time, but all this changes when he makes a stopover in a small town in which he uncovers endless tales of murder and mystery. In True Lee Child style, this book will have you short of breath from its numerous twists and turns, keeping you gripped until the very end.
Duran Duran are back, with their latest album, Paper Gods, featuring a raft of collaborations between the band and artists ranging from talented to questionable. It’s a combination of the 80’s rock synths that Duran Duran are famous for, and more current pop and disco beats. A surprising name included on the tracklist was Lindsay Lohan, who contributed to the upbeat but rather cheesy Danceophobia, which will ironically probably be the most popular dance track on the album. Less surprising was the lovely Keisza, who lends her vocals to the other dancefloor filler of the album, Last Night in the City. Another inclusion was guitarist

VW Scirocco R CITY RIDES - S3
fact magazine
61
CITY RIDES
Handsome, sleek, luxurious and fast; our much-anticipated first experience in VW’s impressive coupe was an enjoyable one. But would it be our VW hatch of choice? The Scirocco R is a hard car to quantify, as its position in the VW line-up is confusing. Though they share a platform and drivetrains, the Scirocco is presented as the sportier, more stylish coupe in comparison to the Golf family hatchback. In terms of style, the Scirocco R instantly impresses. The sleek lines, the low, wide stance, the big sports alloys and front air scoops really lend an air of performance to the car. The good news continues inside. As with any VW top-spec model, you get luxury that punches way up into premium 62
fact magazine
territory, with figure-hugging leather sports seats, a high-end stereo system and a very well built feel to everything. There are also subtle hints of performance everywhere, such as the R-badge on the steering wheel and seats, the DSG gearshifter, and most prominently, the three gauges on top of the dash showing turbo pressure, oil temperature and lap time. Driving the Scirocco R is a pleasure as well – it’s smooth, powerful and fast, with VW’s lovely turbocharged 2.0l FSI inline-four engine that delivers a hefty surge of power with a satisfying
growl when the turbo kicks in. However, when you start comparing the stats between the Scirocco R and the two performance Golfs, the GTI and the R, the picture becomes a lot more complicated. So, let’s break it down: In the Scirocco R the FSI engine puts out 276hp. The Golf GTI and the Golf R both use the slightly different TSI engine, though it is also a turbocharged 2.0l inline-four. On the Golf GTI it’s rated at 217hp, and on the Golf R, which is where things get surprising, the engine puts out the most, at 296hp. Of all three, the Golf R is the only one that offers all-wheel-drive, whereas the other two are both front-wheel-drive. On the Scirocco R this means understeer, and even more so than on the Golf GTI, which is a much lighter and more nimble car. However, the Scirocco, with its extra 50 horses, definitely feels faster than the Golf GTI, especially when that turbo kicks in. So, in terms of both performance and price
CITY RIDES
the Scirocco R sits between the two Golfs. If you’re on a budget the Golf GTI is the least expensive of the three by around thirty thousand dirhams, and provides excellent value in terms of enjoyment and quality. However, where decisions become really tough is between the Scirocco R and the Golf R, which are only separated by a few thousand dirhams. If you like the sleek and stylish coupe
look, then the Scirocco is the car for you. But that coupe design does come at a price. The smaller boot hatch, with a very raised lip, also means that access to the boot space is less practical than on a Golf. And then there is the split rear seating, which means you can only carry a maximum of four passengers, to the Golf’s five. So here’s the rub: Yes, the Scirocco R is a
stunning looking car, and yes the interior is stylish, cosy and well appointed. However, for just a few thousand dirhams more, you can get the Golf R, which is more practical, more powerful, and all-wheel-drive. So, ultimately, it comes down to preference. Do you want a Scirocco, or do you want a Golf? While we loved the Scirocco R, as petrol heads we’d have to go with the Golf R. ✤ fact magazine

The 86 Cup Car is a race-ready variant of the road-going Toyota TRD 86. The main differences include a stripped down interior, a roll-cage and race seat, a racing exhaust and slick tyres. The engine and drive train are the same as the TRD 86 you can buy in the showrooms. The engine is the 86’s 2.0l four-cylinder boxer engine producing 200hp and 205Nm of torque. In a stripped down, lightweight version on slick
tyres, we can tell you that it’s plenty of power! The car grips the road like it’s on rails, and throwing it around whilst powering through the manual gearbox is massive amounts of fun. The TRD 86 Cup Car is yours (as in, you own it – it belongs to you) for AED177,000, and this price includes application and training for your racing licence. This makes the TRD 86 Cup one of the most affordable race series to enter in the Gulf. They’re still accepting entries for the upcoming season, so log on to www.yasmarinacircuit.com for more information.

Th e D a w n o f a New Rolls Royce It’s not often that Rolls-Royce release an all-new model, so when they do, it’s kind of a big deal. Especially when it looks as beautiful as this, the all-new Rolls-Royce Dawn. While many might consider it simply a drophead Wraith, they’d be mistaken, as Rolls Royce have gone to great pains to make the Dawn a whole new entity in its own right. Yes, it is derived from the same platform, and uses the same engine and transmission, but the similarities pretty much end there, as the coachwork involved in creating the convertible model called for a whole new approach. As a result, the surfaces of the Dawn are 80% new compared to the Wraith, especially towards the back half of the car. And the interiors have also been redesigned from the ground up specifically with open-air motoring in mind. We think the results speak for themselves. It is absolutely stunning.
Th e B e n t l e y B e n tay g a S U V An extremely bold new step for the British luxury marque has seen them produce their first ever SUV, the Bentley Bentayga. It speaks of their determination to move into this segment when they released an SUV concept, the EXP 9 F, back in 2012, which took design cues from the Mulsanne, but was generally unpopular. So, back to the drawing board they went, and this, the Bentayga, is the result. Borrowing instead on design cues from the Continental and Flying Spur, the look is much more elegant and understated, but still distinctly Bentley. The Bentayga is powered by a colossal 6.0l W12 with an output of 600bhp and 900Nm, resulting in a top speed of 187mph and a 0-100km/h time of 4.1 seconds, making it the fastest and most powerful luxury SUV in the world. fact magazine

PLUGGED-IN
The Samsung NX M i n i As the selfie craze threatens to engulf us all, and public monuments everywhere have hit back with selfie stick bans to stop tourists poking each other’s eyes out, Samsung says it has the answer…
So this is it, the device that caters to the social media addict who is constantly looking for that perfect selfie in the quest for that perfect Facebook profile pic! As digicams lose ground year-on-year to smartphones, they’ve had to adapt to survive, and Samsung has pounced on the one big complaint with smartphone cameras; that is that the inwards facing camera is never as good in quality as the main one, usually being lower in pixels and without flash. This means that no matter how you bend, twist, and position it, unless the ambient lighting and setting is completely right, the picture just won’t get enough ‘likes’ to stoke your fragile Instagram-fuelled sense of self-esteem. Enter the Samsung NX Mini, the digicam boasting a flip-up screen that shows you exactly how your selfie is going to look, as you take it. And gone are the days where you end up with a cramp in your fingers as you attempt to hold the camera and press the ‘take’ button with the same hand, as the NX Mini now boasts the ‘Wink Shot’ function, which detects a wink and takes the picture two seconds later. It also only weights 158 grams, so you won’t get repetitive strain injury when your attempts at selfie perfection soar above 200 shots. 66
fact magazine
And the selfie-stick ban won’t stop the NX Mini either, as it features a wide angle and wide-screen display, allowing you to capture the perfect moment with all your friends at only arm’s length, without the need for a telescopic stranger-poker. And just in case the half-hour wait to reach a laptop, to upload your images, literally sends your ego into a downwards-spiral of depression and selfloathing, fear not, the NX Mini features Tag & Go, allowing it to pair with all NFC-enabled devices, which includes most current smartphones and tablets. You can send albums to devices via WiFi as well. ✤ VERDICT: It can be argued that selfies are for the terminally self-obsessed and insecure who probably depend on the approval of friends, family, loose acquaintances and complete strangers for their own sense of self worth, and are a major contributor to the increasingly shallow and vanity-driven society we are living in today. OR people just want to document how awesome their life is from a face-on angle! If you absolutely must, then this camera will make you look good pulling a duck face in front of the Eiffel Tower, or whatever selfie pose floats your boat!

The warm, ethereal and mesmerising fragrance has tasting notes of cardamom, mimosa and tonka bean. Mists of honeyed, golden mimosa float above the spiciness of freshly crushed cardamom. Creamy tonka and smooth sandalwood woven under powdery heliotrope and Damask rose picked at dawn.

If good, wholesome, grilled food is what gets your taste buds excited, you’ll want to pay attention to what we’re about to share. BBQ Al Qasr at Emirates Palace is one outdoor venue that takes al fresco dining to a whole new level. Think luxurious surroundings, tantalising aromas, and seasoned, cooked to preference bbq dishes including steaks and seafood like you’ve never tasted before. Chef Yann leads the team of worldclass chefs who will prepare your food at BBQ Al Qasr. He tells us what he believes makes the restaurant stand out from its competitors: “The main feature in most definitely the venue, this is definitely an unrivalled spot,” he says. “There are
beautiful views of the water as well as the Palace. We definitely take pride in the food we prepare and the ingredients we use, offering our guests the very best.” Out tasting menu began with two very different starters; Classic Caesar Salad with romaine lettuce, crispy veal bacon aged, all served in a parmesan basket. We loved the unique presentation in a parmesan basket, it was crispy, delicious and all the ingredients had a tasty freshness. Next came the Hand Dived Scallop with green pea mousseline. Being huge fans of scallop, this was an exquisite treat. They were cooked to melt-inyour-mouth perfection – this dish is an absolute must.
CHEF’S TABLE Chef Yann explains more about the menu at BBQ Al Qasr and shares some of the restaurant’s signature dishes. “Simply grilled on charcoals, we use the best available ingredients,” he says. “From Wagyu, Black Angus, John Stone, Maine lobster, hand dived Norwegian scallops, Alaskan king crab, Whole sea bass from the Britany coast, Gulf jumbo prawn, and Scottish salmon, to name but a few. “Our focus is on authenticity, interactivity, and sharing and our ingredients are sourced from all corners of the globe, and all of our prime cuts are imported,” he adds. We were eagerly waiting to try the mains, which were all presented in a fantastic way. The Oriental Spiced Arabic Meat Mixed Grill hung from different skewers, and each had a beautiful smoky taste that can only be achieved using quality bbq tools. The Jumbo U10 Prawns came sizzling with visible smoke rising from the dish, and served with saffron rouille and chimichurri sauce they were simply exquisite. We loved the tangy garlic kick from the chimichurri which was packed with flavour. The main attraction, which had us in awe the second we saw it, and even more so after taking our first bite, was the Grilled Australian Tomahawk Steak with smoked garlic and Portobello mushroom. This, is not for the faint hearted! It was tender and rich, and the sides complemented the dish very well. Like us, you’ve got to be a dedicated meat lover to enjoy this, and if you’re in the mood for excellent-quality, tummy-filing steak, this will absolutely do the trick. By now, we had noticed Chef Yann’s immense talent and creative flair for cooking – he was a natural. It no surprise, as Chef Yann has an extensive amount of both childhood and professional culinary experience. “My first memory of being in a kitchen was when I was six years old,” he recalls. “My mother was a chef in my first school and she put me in charge of collecting meal information from my classmates. “So I spent a significant part of my break time gathering meal preferences and in her huge kitchen, delighting in the aroma of favourites like pot au feu, gratin dauphinois, and hachis parmentier. ➻ fact magazine

CHEF’S TABLE “Her kitchen was where I peeled my first carrots and potatoes and what marked my debut into the world of cooking. Ten years later, I applied to culinary school and the rest as they say is history,” he says. In his professional career, Chef Yann has worked all over France, in multiple Michelin star restaurants including Normandy St. Michel, Rocamadour, and Alsace Stasbourg, before crossing to Geneva to work at La Chaumiere Restaurant, followed by the Mandarin Oriental, Geneva where he had the privilege of working with the likes of Franck Ferigutu in Le Sud, a concept restaurant by celebrity chef Paul Bocusse. It was during this time that he met James Norman who introduced Chef Yann to Kempinski and exposed him to the intricacies of five-star hospitality. He then worked at Le Grand Hotel Kempinski, Geneva for three years, before taking the leap from Europe to the UAE to become Chef de Cuisine at Emirates Palace. Chef Yann’s food philosophy is a great one. “My food philosophy is based on respect, authenticity, and emotion and sharing - these are the four pillars I believe in,” Chef Yann says. “Ultimately, I love food and will continue to seek knowledge and to explore the cuisines of the world.” he adds. We move onto dessert and find on the table; Grilled Pineapple with maple ice cream and vanilla pound cake, Chocolate Molten Cake, and Petit Fours made up of toasted marshmallow, rocky road and chocolate dip. Wow! Clearly, it’s not just the bbq that this venue does well, its sweet offerings are much to shout about too. Our favourite, hands down, was the chocolate molten cake with a liquid choco centre – yummy! When it comes to both taste and presentation, Chef Yann gets it right every time. “Both are very important for me and cannot be looked at independently because you enjoy a dish with all your five senses,” he explains. “First of all when the dish is placed on the table you should find it appealing. Then you should anticipate what combination of flavours and sensory notes you can expect,” he continues. “When you finally taste the food, there should be an emotional connection that makes the experience memorable. As Chefs, these 84

ai Pai Dong is deceptive. It looks like a high end Chinese restaurant, located as it is in the Galleria mall opposite Bentley Bistro, and boasting a stylish and modern take on classic Chinese décor. However, once you examine the menu, you’ll find that the restaurant is true to its street food theme, as the cuisine is a modern interpretation of classic Chinese dishes that are as reasonable as they are tempting. We kicked off with a round of dim sum (of course!). These included one of the restaurant’s signature dishes, Xiao Long Box, which is dumplings, filled with a thick chicken broth. Though you might be tempted to dive straight in, we’d advise that you let them cool a little first! We also tried the Pumpkin and Duck, which are interesting dumplings with a crispy outer shell of orange dough that actually resembles a dumpling. They taste as good as they look. We then opted for a very traditional Hong Kong starter, the Chilli Chicken. This is slices of chicken in a delicious and tangy sauce, though it has a real bite. One thing that might put off some diners, but will surely attract real foodies, is that this dish is actually served cold, just as it would be in Hong Kong. For mains, we tried the Cantonese Duck, which is slices of roasted duck with a lovely crispy skin and a very tasty sauce, and the Wok Fried Beef Tenderloin. The beef was nice, although the sauce was very peppery, and someone who isn’t keen on pepper wouldn’t enjoy it at all. We also ordered some Crispy Egg Noodles, and we were in for a surprise. This is because it’s actually a large bundle of dry noodles stacked upwards out of a bowl of seafood broth. The noodles soften at the bottom as you mix them into the broth, and

Eating it is a bit of an adventure, but the broth is very tasty, so it’s worth the effort! Overall, the experience in Dai Pai Dong is excellent, with tasty food that won’t break the bank, knowledgeable and friendly staff, and a great atmosphere. Be sure to book ahead on weekends, as though the place is new, the word is out and it gets very busy. The clientele boasts as many Chinese as anyone else, which is always a good sign! Whilst there, be sure to pop in to the restaurant’s ‘speakeasy’ for a post-meal beverage. It’s a cosy cocktail lounge adjacent to the venue that’s easily missed, as you enter through a nondescript door with a teapot on it, and through a hidden door in a ‘tea room’, in the style of the hidden bars of Hong Kong. It’s a must-see! ✤ GO: Dai Pai Dong is open for lunch from 12noon to 3pm, and dinner from 6pm to 11pm, which is extended to midnight on Thursday and Friday. The Bar is open from 4pm to 1am. he fresh flavours of tantalising tabouli to mouth-watering meat dishes, Li Beirut takes finedining to a whole new level. The restaurant is a subtle blend of tradition and innovation in both cuisine and aesthetic. From the famous tajines and kebbeh, to their grill and kebabs, as well as traditional sweets, every dish is a delight, and a potent fusion of authentic and western delights. The décor of the restaurant can be described as simple yet elegant, with chic and comfortable chairs and tables that compliment the style of the restaurant. The staff are knowledgeable and warm, quick to offer suggestions of the must-have dishes and exquisite vino. The real attraction, however, is the passion of Li Beirut’s chef and his team. Li Beirut’s vision is to revolutionise Arabic cuisine in Abu Dhabi, and this ambition is shown in every dish. From the foie gras kebbeh starter to the signature main course of zaatar crusted rack of lamb accompanied by sweet potato and truffle; everything on the menu is a masterpiece. The presentation of each dish is carefully considered and extremely unique. They say one eats with the eyes, and this is the perfect example of such an experience – the creativity and flair is unmatched. Everything we sampled at Li Beirut was simply out-of-this-world, but there were certainly a number of stand-out dishes that excited our tastebuds and, therefore, gained our recommendation. Our Recommendations Our dinner would be incomplete if we did not begin with Cold Mezzeh. We were served the delicious fattoush salad, the evergreen vine leaves and, of course, hummus with khaboos bread. The freshness of the khaboos bread made the dish standout and is easily the best I’ve ever tasted. The Executive Chef at Li Beirut has produced some deliciously unique dishes, one being the (foie gras dish name), consisting of walnut paste, deep fried kebbeh with a mouthwatering lamb stuffing and, of course, foie gras. The combination of flavours blended perfectly and the presentation was on another level; a real must have! For the main-course the mixed grill was our winner. Its selection of shish taouk, shish kebab, kofta kebab, lamb cutlets and lamb chops made it a delectable journey of flavours and
textures. It comes highly recommended due to the freshness the meat carries and the flavours infused in eat bite. For dessert we experienced the honey fudge; a deliciously sweet fusion of Arabian and Western flavours consisting of golden brown kunaffa decorated with a astha honey caramel cigar, accompanied by a zingy lemon olive oil sorbet on the side. This dish certainly gave a climactic end to an incredible dining experience at Li Beirut. ✤ GO: Li Beirut is a fine-dining Lebanese Restaurant located at Jumeirah at Etihad Towers. Tradition Meets Modern at
So Spa
Located on the Corniche is the beautiful Sofitel Abu Dhabi, with its striking towers standing tall. What most might not know is that, inside, there awaits a cosy labyrinth of relaxation in the form of So Spa. FACT’s Shabana Adam went to check it out before starting the day...
T
here’s a peaceful melody playing in So Spa – much like the soothing sounds you would expect in such a space; it instantly calms me. So Spa is not the biggest of spas that I’ve visited in Abu Dhabi, but it sure does a great job of being practical yet very inviting. One of the dilemmas of going to the spa, especially if you’re only there for an hour, is choosing the right treatment. Whether you’re looking to be revitalised, reenergised or relaxed, it’s essential that you make the perfect choice. In my case, the 60-minute Tonifying Indian Ayurvedic Massage was recommended due to its energy-restoring properties – something that everyone could do with at a morning appointment. As my therapist explains, So Spa brings together ancient traditions from around the world to meet the refinement and skill of the latest in French cosmetology. All treatments are designed to provide an exhilarating and rejuvenating experience. What I found most interesting is that So Spa’s treatment menu is inspired by gastronomy (this is definitely my kind of place). So SPA treatments are presented like the menu of a French gourmet restaurant, drawing on the French gastronomic expertise that Sofitel is renowned for. Guests can 96

choose from an “a la carte selection” 30-minute ‘starters’ for busy city dwellers seeking respite from a hectic schedule, or hour-long ‘main courses’ and ‘desserts,’ which include body massages, facials, hot stone treatments, and other worldwide or local traditional massages that nourish the body and soul. Sofitel designed the original menu concept to bring a touch of fantasy and an air of creativity to the typical spa list of treatments. My treatment, or, should I say, main course, begins with a foot rub and soak, which prepares your body for a state of relaxation. This traditional Indian massage ritual dates back to a thousand years ago. There is a strong focus on the muscles, using warm oils and tonics, and I notice this as my therapist uses the tips of her thumbs to work out every knot in my back. What I love most is that this treatment does exactly what it promises. All those tense muscles are loosened up and though I feel more ready than ever to tackle the day ahead, I’m also happily relaxed. I highly recommend it for all busy-bodies! ✤ GO: So Spa is located at Sofitel Abu Dhabi Corniche. Open daily, from 9am to 9pm. Call (0)2 813 7777 for reservations and more information. fact magazine

the hospitality industry. Our staff is skilled in understanding, being aware of, and, most importantly, being sensitive to the feelings, thoughts and requests of our guests.
Your fave ABU DHABI hotspots... There are some wonderful hidden treasures here, like a sunset swim at Saadiyat Beach or BBQ in the desert, but my favourite is to Kayak into the heart of the mangroves (especially during high tide when you get to do this under the canopy of the mangroves). I have seen amazing wildlife such as grey herons and schools of fish, and then completed the adventures with a picnic on an island.
your goals for Fairmont Bab Al Bahr over the next year... Over the next year Fairmont Bab Al Bahr will be focusing on continued growth in the MICE and leisure segments. Alongside this, the management will be looking at the hotel’s development from an infrastructure perspective as well as the guest experience. With Abu Dhabi becoming more accessible to an increasing number of countries, Fairmont Bab Al Bahr’ s convenient location at the gateway of the city makes it an extremely attractive proposition to our Corporate and MICE groups. We look forward to an increase in a variety of groups.
