Life is a combination of magic and pasta. - Federico Fellini
T
here's a famous quote by Julia Child: "People who love to eat are always the best people" - anyone who has spent even a few minutes around me will know this to ring true. I LOVE being around foodies - I'm talking about those who can turn up at the boujiest Japanese restaurant and order like a pro one day, and appreciate a good greasy burger and milkshake the next - if you like to gather around good food amid banter and genuine vibes, you're my kind of people, a.k.a the best kind of people. So, every year when we get back from the summer slumber and the weather starts showing signs of cooling down, one of our favourite things to check out is all the newest dining deals in town - and 2019 is bringing its A-game. With some of the world's best restaurants on our doorsteps, Abu Dhabi is really a culinary gem waiting to be discovered. Turn to p26 where we've rounded up 31 eats to get you through October. From an elegant afternoon tea to after-work hotspots and the livliest weekend brunches, there's no room for mediocre food this month only the best for our readers! Staying on the path to all things yummy, our pick of food features should give you all the hanger pangs as we take a seat at the sophisticated Marco Pierre White Steakhouse & Grill (p77) and the very cool Warehouse Wine & Tapas Bar (p81). Both were standouts when it came to good service, atmosphere and consistently high-quality food and drinks. For lovers of all things cool, we've got the latest programme highlights from The Arts Centre at NYUAD (p35) where arts, culture, performance and entertainment is ready to thrill visitors. The Louvre Abu Dhabi's newest exhibition takes us on a trip down memory lane to some of the art world's greatest legacies who once called France their home for a period of time (p40). Travel also plays a huge part in the October issue as our team brings you their experiences from faraway destinations. In Globetrotter, we fly off to the sunny shores of Koh Samui (p52) and our Travel Tales come from greener more palatial backdrops in Portugal (p59). And if that wasn't enough, you've got fashion, beauty, tech and the most prominent dining and society news. October is the gateway to cooler temperatures making their way into the Abu Dhabi air - we can't wait to finally visit a restaurant and sit outside on the terrace. Let your belly lead the way and we'll see you all in November for more hashtag food goals!☺

LET’S GO GREEK! Mazi, which means ‘together’ in Greek, is set to offer a memorable dining experience to its patrons thanks to a wide selection of unique and exquisite cuisine from Greece and its vibrant atmosphere. HAVING OPENED ITS FIRST branch in Notting Hill, in the west of London in 2012, MAZI is no ordinary Greek restaurant. With the vision of owners – dynamic husband and wife team Adrien Carré and Christina Mouratoglou – it rapidly became a popular restaurant by interpreting old-time classic recipes with a modern twist and sharing dishes. Located at The St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort, Abu Dhabi, the newest and first branch of MAZI to launch outside of London invites guests to enjoy a menu consisting of some bestsellers from home as well as a range of unique dishes that reflect the culinary culture of Greece. Christina and Adrien introduce authentic Greek flavours with their own innovative twist, while placing emphasis on sharing a feast of a variety of dishes. They introduce recipes that rely on classic techniques and contemporary presentation to achieve the best results in addition to the use of the finest, fresh ingredients – some sourced directly from Greece. “Our vision is to show the world how innovative, refined and creative Greek food can be. We derive our inspiration from childhood memories and the Mediterranean table, and we reinterpret them with a contemporary twist,” says Christina Mouratoglou, co-owner of MAZI. “The idea is to revive Greece’s sharing culinary tradition in what we like to call a ‘fine-casual’ atmosphere. Our guests can expect to find a fun place to enjoy some great food combined 16

with the intimate service of a fine-dining restaurant.” The main objective of MAZI as a brand is to connect people who are united in their passion for fresh and tasty food. An exciting new menu has been created for the Abu Dhabi restaurant, breathing new life, colour and flavour into the worn stereotypes of Greek cuisine. It is the concept of sharing fun moments together with friends and family in a casual and contemporary setting that will make each visit even more memorable. The design of the new restaurant takes a modern approach to the rustic architecture and décor of Greek towns. It is home to a beautiful interior replete with carefully chosen elements like a traditional fishing boat at the entrance and door handles made of olive branches. The venue also features a cozy bar area as well as a terrace that features tables spaciously distributed within a garden of olive trees. Reminiscent of some of Greece’s most beautiful cities, MAZI Abu Dhabi – which can house up to 120 guests – boasts a playful take on bright blue and mustard yellow furniture and wall décor, all carefully balanced in a sea of white. ✤

FRIENDS FOR LIFE After the sudden death of his school friend, Vosgan Arzoumanian is reaching out to the community to raise awareness of the importance pf installing automatic defibrillators in all public playgrounds. He talks to FACT’s Angela Beitz… Tell us a little bit about yourself? My name is Vosgan Arzoumanian, I’m a 16-year-old student at the Theodore Monod French school In Abu Dhabi. Can you tell us about what happened to encourage you to raise this awareness? Two years ago, while playing football with some friends, my classmate and childhood friend Zeyad had a sudden heart attack and very unfortunately passed away. Indeed, it was extremely sad, a young 14-year-old boy who passed away while playing football. Why did you decide to make this YouTube video to raise awareness of CPR? Well, for the first few months all of us (friends) were devastated. We couldn’t come to terms that our friend Zeyad passed away. It was extremely sad to lose a friend that you grew up with. Words can’t describe the feeling. But after a few months, I said I want to do something to “give a meaning” to his death, in other words this was my way to “beat the death”. I wanted to do something to try and save lives, to create awareness around us in order to prevent any further tragic losses. This was the idea. So, it didn’t take me long to decide to make a short movie about it. How did you go about making the short movie? I did everything by myself, from the story to the script to the shooting, editing, music, and lighting. It was extremely difficult, but I wanted to honour the memory of my friend Zeyad. 22
fact magazine
What is the message behind the video? His Highness Sheikh Nahyan Bin Mubarak Al Nahyan Minister of Tolerance was extremely kind to give His blessing to the project, and wanted to take the patronage of this project which had a great humanitarian message. I am so grateful for His kindness for supporting this project. The message of the movie was to make people aware of this rare type of heart condition and try to save people by spreading the message about the importance of first aid and CPR also. Who is the video aimed at? The media, schools and also reputable media publications. The movie is on YouTube, and will show in the schools in Abu Dhabi with the permission of ADEK. Also we want to teach CPR (first aid) to students in schools above grade six, also to install automatic defibrillators in all public playgrounds to provide basic life support in case any similar accident happens, until they transport the victim to the hospital. What is your personal message that would like people to know? I am doing everything to try to save other people’s lives, because what happened to Zeyad was devastating. No one should have to go through that pain, also by doing this movie and this campaign somewhere in my mind I am making my late friend Zeyad smile again. ✤

nspired by the Year of Tolerance, the coming season adopts the theme of Connection, which reflects the myriad ways The Arts Centre's connects people from diverse cultures and backgrounds through shared artistic experiences. The Arts Centre’s fifth season, which will run until June 2020, features inspiring local and global artists, who will present over 100 performances comprising six commissions, three World Premieres, 14 UAE Premieres and Debuts, and more than 90 Off the Stage audience engagement and educational events. This season will build on The Arts Centre’s mission, which aims to connect people, foster creativity, open cultural dialogue, and support emerging talent. Bill Bragin, Executive Artistic Director of The Arts Centre at NYUAD, said: “It’s thrilling to reach this milestone season as The Arts Center continues to grow and evolve. We’re grateful for the trust we’ve earned from enthusiastic audiences who come to us to discover inspiring new artistic experiences in a season filled with commissioned new works and regional premieres by groundbreaking artists. “As we deepen our relationship with the public, we’re equally grateful that some of the most respected members of the UAE’s business community, including Mubadala and ADCB, have invested in our continued success,” he continues. “We’re also thrilled that this year welcomes Mariët Westermann back to NYUAD in her new role as Vice Chancellor. As the former and inaugural provost at NYUAD, her early vision of public programmes as a core value of the University and its integration in the cultural and intellectual life of the UAE is reflected in the maturation of The Arts Centre.” Upcoming events and performances begin with an extraordinary double bill exploring Arab sounds of the African continent, from Egypt to Zanzibar, Fathy Salama with Sheikh Mahmoud Tohamy’s Sufism vs Modernism / and Dhow Countries Music Academy’s Zanzibari Taarab & Kidumbak. The artists will be selected through a collaborative process curated by NYUAD faculty and staff as well as members of the UAE artistic community including Bill Bragin, Deborah Williams, Deepak Unnikrishnan, Dorian Paul Rodgers, Mohamed Alhashimi, and Aathma Nirmala Dious. Other returning classics include the CinemaNA contemporary Arabic cinema series, a collaboration with NYUAD’s Film and New Media program and Paris-Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi on selected Monday nights; and the eighth season of the monthly Friday night open mic Rooftop Rhythms, presented with the support of the US Embassy. Opening the second half of the season in January is a World Premiere commissioned by The Arts Center: Al Raheel | Departure, a contemporary theatre work created by emerging Emirati writer Reem Almenhali and award-winning American director and NYUAD Professor Joanna Settle. That is followed by the fourth edition of Barzakh Festival re-
envisioned to present six live performances plus DJ sets on three stages all in the same night. Barzakh Festival creates a meeting place of musical streams that crosses diverse cultures, and features French-Algerian Rai star Sofiane Saidi & Mazalda; Tunisian electronic producer AMMAR 808; South Africa’s propulsive BCUC; Cuban rapper, singer and flutist Le Dame Blance; Bokante, a world-jazz spin-off of Grammy winners Snarky Puppy; and Dubai’s very own NOON, who will present the world premiere of reinventions of the music of Umm Kulthoum, commissioned by The Arts Centre. Newly announced in the season’s lineup are two inventive performances by composer/sound artist Sxip Shirey, which will turn the spotlight on artists from the UAE. On April 9, Shirey hosts Sxip’s Hour of Charm which will surprise and delight with an idiosyncratic lineup of UAE-based artists, which Shirey will curate with The Arts Centre’s Bill Bragin. On April 17, 2020, Shirey and choreographer Coco Karol will lead the immersive site specific choral and movement piece, The Gauntlet. In this piece, texts drawn from “movement interviews” with members of the Abu Dhabi community will form the basis of an intimate experience bathing audiences in waves of harmony, poetry, and gesture, as they are led through musical corridors of sonic architecture created by the human voice, with a choir drawn from the UAE. Building on NYUAD’s collaboration with the Special Olympics and the University’s ongoing commitment to awareness, The Arts Center will partner with the Special Olympics UAE and local schools throughout Abu Dhabi to launch a series of sensory friendly performances during the 2019-2020 season. These events tailor performances to support the needs of young people on the autism spectrum, and with intellectual disabilities, and other social and sensory sensitivities, and create more relaxed environments for them to experience the work. It is the hope that this series will help spark other performance venues across the UAE to provide similar opportunities for People of Determination. Apart from live performances, The Arts Centre organises Off The Stage events, which include an extensive lineup of workshops, masterclasses, talks, and Q&As as part of each artist's residency such as Techniques Workshop: Circus Techniques and Ethiopian Music; Creator's Workshop: Arabic Music Composition; and Techniques Workshop: Merce Cunningham Dance Techniques; and a series of Arts Chats organised with the University’s Career Development Center, among many more. ✤ - The Arts Centre offers membership packages which provide its members a season pass to experience each production in the 2019-20 season, plus exclusive early ticket bookings. eaturing some of the most notable names of the 20th century AvantGarde scene, Louvre Abu Dhabi’s new exhibition, Rendezvous in Paris: Picasso, Chagall, Modigliani & Co. (1900- 1939), includes more than 80 works by artists including Pablo Picasso, Amedeo Modigliani, Marc Chagall, Juan Gris, Chaïm Soutine, Constantin Brancusi and Tamara de Lempicka. Running until December 7, the exhibition traces the creative output of emigrant artists living and working in Paris throughout the first half of the 20th century. The first exhibition in Louvre Abu Dhabi’s new season, ‘Changing Societies’, Rendezvous in Paris: Picasso, Chagall, Modigliani & Co. (1900-1939) is held in partnership with Paris’ Centre Pompidou and organised with Agence France-Muséums. Through paintings, sculptures and photographs by some 50 avant-garde artists, the exhibition explores the Paris of the ‘Roaring Twenties’. Paris’ dynamism and cosmopolitan nature made it an attractive, Bohemian hub for artists from across Europe, many of whom left their home countries in the post- World War I years in search of a place where they could express themselves creatively. Gathering in cafés, salons, studios and galleries, this artistic community transformed the ‘City of Lights’ into the creative heart of Europe, with their experimentation with radical expressions of colour and form producing some of the most iconic artworks in history. Manuel Rabaté, Director of Louvre Abu Dhabi, said: “We are confident that Rendezvous in Paris: Picasso, Chagall, Modigliani & Co. (1900-1939) will be a blockbuster exhibition, a great start to our ambitious new 2019-20 season. “For the first time ever in Abu Dhabi, residents and visitors will be able to see works by Picasso, Chagall, Modigliani, Delaunay, Lipchitz and other masters in a show encompassing the key movements of 20th century modern art,” he added. “This gathering of the widest ever range of classical Modernists’ works in the UAE reflects our commitment to bringing art from all over the world to our diverse audience.” Visitors to Rendezvous in Paris can enjoy an immersive journey that embodies the artistic spirit so characteristic of Paris in early decades of the 1900s, exploring the diversity of the creative output during that time. Tracing the physical and psychological journeys of these iconic artists, the exhibition will examine the development of some of modern art’s most prominent styles and reflect on the unifying threads of displacement and multiculturalism that often shaped the experiences of the members of this diverse group. BIG SCREEN Joker
Highlights
WHAT’S IT ABOUT:
WHAT’S IT ABOUT?
While wandering the streets of Gotham City dressed as a clown, failed comedian Arthur Fleck runs into some violent thugs. Dismissed by the fractured society, Fleck is trapped between a cyclic existence between apathy and cruelty as he begins a slow dissent into madness. What follows is a number of escalating events that transform him into a criminal mastermind.
DIRECTOR: Todd Phillips CAST: Joaquin Phoenix
WHY IT’S WORTH WATCHING?
An unprecedented narrative of Batman’s arch nemesis, Joker provides a social commentary that is a true cinematic masterpiece. Touching ideas and intentions that are totally new and uncharted, the film’s premise will give you a lot to think about. Easily one of the best superhero movies ever made, Joker ups the ante by blurring the line between superhero universe and real life. The film centres on Arthur Fleck, who feels rejected and disregarded by society, and is struggling to find his way in Gotham. A clown-for-hire by day, he aspires to be a stand-up comic at night, but eventually realises the joke always seems to be on him. Abandoned by the world, Arthur makes one bad decision that leads to a chain reaction of escalating events, as he transforms into the criminal mastermind known as the Joker. Joaquin Phoenix’s excellent portrayal invites us to fall in love with the monster. Bold and heartbreakingly beautiful, Joker will captivate you as it takes you on a profoundly dark journey.

An ageing government assassin seeking to exit his career, Henry Brogan finds himself going up against a younger clone of himself named Junior. As he becomes the target of the mysterious operative who can seemingly predict his every move, Henry has no choice but to uncover the truth behind Junior’s creation and stopping him from going down the path he did.
– Joker
DIRECTOR: Ang Lee CAST: Will Smith, Mary Elizabeth Winstead
WHY IT’S WORTH WATCHING?
Bringing back the winning combination of Will Smith and nail-biting action sequences, Gemini Man tells an epic tale of battle between the past and present. An innovative action-thriller, Ang Lee’s Gemini Man has Will Smith against Will Smith. The first movie to use timeless VFX technology this year, Gemini Man sees Smith playing the role of Henry Brogan as well as his younger clone. Henry Brogan is an elite assassin who becomes the target of a mysterious agent who seems to be tracking his every move. To his horror, Brogan soon realises that the man who is trying to kill him is actually his faster, younger, cloned version of himself. Cementing Will Smith’s position as a box office star, Gemini Man’s gripping plot and amazing special effects make it one to watch out for! 44

A melodious tribute to some of the most influential black women, Rapsody’s newest album is music for your soul. The American rapper’s third studio album, Eve truly showcases her musical genius and creativity in all its glory. Bringing her black womanhood and ingenuity to the fore, the album pays a beautiful homage to strong female role models. A masterful tribute to Nina Simone, Nina includes an eerie cut of Strange Fruit. Featuring a collection of historical footnotes, the celebratory and uplifting track is the perfect tribute to the late singer. Featuring everyone from J. Cole to Queen Latifah, the album continues Rapsody’s exploration of female power. Cleo, a song about the unfairness of sexism, sees her sounding unstoppable and liberated. Dedicated to fictional bank robber Cleo Sims, the hardhitting banger is sprinkled with samples of the 1981 Phil Collins hit In The Air Tonight. The song sees the North Carolina native speaking to her critics and revealing she hasn’t always felt comfortable in the culture she so effortlessly carries. From the cascading album opener to the preceding proverbial masterpieces, the intricately woven details and heart touching lyrics make Eve a true triumph! 46

A raw and vulnerable celebration of relationships and emotions, Common’s latest offering will have you in your feelings. Having always worn his heart on his sleeve, the Chicago-hailing rapper, actor and activist goes all out on his newest album. Tackling the singer’s relationships with himself, his past romantic relationships as well as with his daughter, Let Love is all about embracing love in all forms. HER Love, featuring guest appearances from Daniel Caesar and Dwele is the rapper’s ode to HipHop history. Also featuring an unreleased beat from J Dilla, the song talks about the important women in Common’s life. Teaming up with Swizz Beatz, Hercules showcases the toughest cut on the album. Swizz is relatively calmer and more soulful than his usual hook work, while Common spins a complicated rhyme scheme that is reminiscent of his earlier work. Offering spiritual depth, soul and dimension, Common truly challenges himself and goes deeper than ever on Let Love.
Set against the backdrop of postwar Switzerland, the novel centres on a boarding school in the Appenzell. The narrator begins to describe the life of a remorseless young Eve, being a captive of the school, as well as her designs to win the affections of the apparently perfect new girl, Fréderique. As she broods over her intentions and the level and nature of control, the novel takes a suspended, unsettling energy. A beautifully worded read!

AN EVERLASTING DREAM There are few places on the planet that take your breath away in an instance, but Samujana Villas in Koh Samui is definitely one of them as FACT's Edward Smith finds out...
Where The Magic Started From Bangkok, we flew directly to Koh Samui island with Bangkok Airways. The trip was short and pleasant – even though it was only one hour, they still served us a lunch! I thought that was a nice touch. Koh Samui has long evolved from its hippy roots to become a chic destination for luxury travellers. It is a pretty large island and it took about an hour to go half way round by taxi.
Luxury Home Away From Home Staying at Samujana Villas was like an incredible dream that we never wanted to wake up from. We stayed four nights in one of 52

the beautiful five-bedroom villas perched on the hillside with our private rooftop complete with infinity pool overlooking the Gulf of Thailand – what more is there to paradise? Set in the northeast of the island and only 10 minutes away from the airport, Samujana’s charming villas offer modern Thai architecture and breath-taking views. Each of the 26 villas comes with its own private butler and 24-hour hotel services. Our days were spent in pure relaxation watching movies in our private cinema and tanning at our private pool while our choice of food was being prepared on site by the very friendly and efficient private butler. A service that we absolutely recommend

every traveller to experience when visiting Thailand and Samujana gets it just right. Ranging from three to eight bedrooms, with airconditioning throughout, fully-equipped kitchens and reception rooms with state-of-the art multimedia and sound systems, Samujana really provides an unparalleled luxury experience with one motto: “Your Place. Your Time.” True to these words, we felt like time had stood still and we were in a bubble of comfort taking things easy and REALLY relaxing, disconnected from the outside world and our digital devices. Many villas also include jacuzzis, private gyms, pool tables and private spas, making it the perfect place for friends and family to gather and have a great time. Those looking for the utmost privacy will appreciate the in-villa facilities, especially when all you want to do is take it easy and spend quality time with loved ones. The resort is just a short taxi ride to some exciting activities in the area…
Adventure-seekers Unite On Koh Samui there are numerous little city centres and they all have their own charm and vibe. With local markets to explore, plenty of restaurants to dine at (if you can tear yourself away from the private butler service), and even the beloved Starbucks. There is something to quell any travellers’ wanderlust on this island paradise: amazing viewpoints, beautiful beaches and tons of watersports. As for the activities involving water, we would recommend Ang Thong National Marine Park which is the perfect location for watersports fans. Many tourism agencies offer day trips to the park on which you can kayak, snorkel, hike to viewpoints and relax 54

Just a couple of miles away from Samujana Villas, you can also find one of Koh Samui’s most popular sandy strips, Chaweng beach. Chaweng stands out for several reasons, it is the most lively neighbourhood in Koh Samui; it is geared towards those who love to party and socialise. Once it gets dark, Chaweng has the liveliest party scene in Koh Samui which is also unique as most of the bars and clubs are along the beach. You can party all night and then leave the club and lay on the beach in the early a.m. - a set up that was appealing to droves of visitors. For the magical sundowner vistas of Chaweng we recommend the Jungle Club. This is a nice setting along a lush fact magazine

PALATIAL PORTUGAL
Conjuring up images of fresh seafood, custard tarts and long stretches of sandy beaches dotted with secluded coves, Portugal is a travel gem that FACT’s David Tapley visited this summer. isbon, known for its authenticity and mix of old customs and ancient history is remarkably safe, easy to navigate and where the temperature rarely drops below 15°C. The Portuguese capital is not only aesthetically beautiful but benefits from the majority of tourist attractions and points of interest being concentrated in a relatively compact area within the heart of the city. Follow the route of the yellow no. 28 tram into historic Alfama, a district wedged between the Sao Jorge Castle and the Tejo river and you’ll discover one of the oldest neighbourhoods. Characterised by winding passageways that lead to unsigned local tascas, centuries-old churches and Roman ruins, Alfama is the kind of place that is best explored on foot but be prepared to get lost in the labyrinth of streets, but fear not, it’s all part of the fun. Beneath Alfama lies the Avenida Liberdade, the place to see and be seen in Lisbon and home to the Tivoli Avenida Liberdade, 60

a five-star property boasting a timeless elegance that has been offering a unique style of Portuguese hospitality for over 80 years. The 1.5km thoroughfare is recognised as being one of the most expensive shopping boulevards in Europe where the likes of Luis Vuitton and Gucci are just moments walk from the hotel. Continue a little further and you’ll find the Estação de Rossio train Station, the touristic Elevador de Santa Justa and several excellent restaurants such as José Avillez’ Belcanto, which currently holds the no. 42 position on the world’s 50 best restaurants’ ranking. A recent €15 million refurbishment project has been undertaken to bring modern touches to this iconic property and ensure the utmost levels of comfort are maintained for guests checking-in to the Tivoli Avenida Liberdade. Passing through the glass sliding doors we are immediately enveloped by a sense of calm that offers a complete juxtaposition from the busy avenue outside. The reception area is engulfed in fresh floral blooms and an abundance
of soft furnishings which have been lovingly spaced throughout the large glass atrium. Turquoise curtains dangle seductively from the upper levels, while gold embellishment surrounds a small bar which is reflected in the elevators. Transporting guests into the upper reaches of the property where a collection of 285 rooms and suites await. Beautifully appointed, all room categories feature a classic design to enhance the feeling of urban luxury and are spacious and elegantly furnished with large comfortable double beds, a terrace or patio and a living area to relax and put your feet up after a day or exploration or shopping until you quite literally drop. Rooms and suites feature all of the expected modern comforts - flatscreen televisions, mini bar, electronic safe. It’s evident that a lot of thought has gone into the modernisation of the property and simple touches such as the inclusion of Bulgari and Hermès amenities in the suites help to elevate the Tivoli experience and cement the reputation of the landmark property. Outside of the room there’s plenty to explore with an outdoor swimming pool situated in a tropical garden at the rear of the property. This oasis of calm offers a small circular pool surrounded by vegetation and plenty of sun-loungers. Lower level guests will find a state-of-the-art fitness centre and the Anantara Spa, a first for the Portuguese capital and a serene environment that encourages introspection and a focus on wellbeing. Six treatment rooms act as a temporary haven and combine the far-eastern therapies for which the Anantara brand is renowned, with indigenous Portuguese rituals. If your stay only allows for one treatment, we’d suggest soothing those aching muscles with the Anantara Signature Massage, using natural oils, combined with purpose-designed movements, to stimulate circulation and promote deep relaxation, while restoring the flow of energy along the meridian lines. Living up to a reputation as one of the city’s most popular meeting places, Tivoli Avenida Liberdade offers several exciting dining options. The classical Cervejaria Liberdade is the hotels’ all-daydining option and while breakfast offers up a live egg station, charcuterie and a plethora of pastel de nata, it’s the al la carte service of Portuguese coastal seafood specialities that piqued our interest. Traditionally cervejarias are small bars that also sell

food items and here the idea has been upscaled and expanded into a fine dining setting where plates of cured meat compete with a resplendent Arraiolos Sheeps Milk Cheese that is buttery in flavour and accompanied by a sweet pumpkin jam. Cervejaria Liberdade is also the place to try the traditional pica pau, a dish of rich and flavorful chopped beef loin served with home-made French fries and the pots of aromatic seafood rice piled high with crawfish lobster, clams and mussels. For a livelier experience, head to the Sky Bar for sundowners overlooking Lisbon’s terracotta rooftops. Much like the lobby downstairs, it’s a popular meeting place with an energetic DJ and some of the best mixed-drinks you’re likely to find in the capital. Chefpreneur Olivier da Costa’s second Scene restaurant (following a successful opening in Sao Paulo, Brazil) is anchored around an art-deco inspired dining room featuring plenty of foliage and a tree raising from the central bar area. It’s an exciting space to frequent and a sense of frivolity overcomes the restaurant which serves up an exciting menu that fuses the best of Brazil and Portugal into an eclectic selection of dishes that also supports a Japanese sushi bar. There’s a freshness to the Alaskan King crab tacos that is hard to replicate, while the octopus carpaccio is alive with flavours thanks to a vibrant lemon vinaigrette, yet it’s the lesser-known Brazilian dishes that have us enraptured. From the simply moreish deep-fried tapioca with cured cheese through to a show-stopping dessert of dulce de leche soufflé with guava ice cream, that would have had us licking the bowl were it not for the high-end clientele perched on the tables in our vicinity. We split our trip and found ourselves in the sleepy mountain town of Sintra for the latter half of our Portuguese adventures. Forested mountainsides, elaborate villas and castles precariously perched on mountain tops are all part and parcel of a visit to UNESCO World Heritage Site, Sintra. The home of royalty, Sintra adopts a slower pace and feels more restrained than Lisbon and late afternoons (following the departure of tour buses and daytrippers) is the ideal time for culture vultures to strap on their walking boots and explore. Steeped in history our base during our all too short stay was an actual Palace! The Tivoli Palacio de Seteais is a rare find of a hotel having been built in the 18th century in a neoclassical style by the then Dutch Consul in Portugal. During the 19th century, several 62

distinguished Portuguese families lived in the Palace including the fifth Marquis of Marialva, who built the triumphal arch linking the two wings. Then in 1953 the Palace was converted into a hotel. With just 30 rooms, the experience of staying in a palace is one of refined luxury that features exemplary levels of service and rooms that have been tastefully modernised while still retaining their characteristic features and period furniture. Timberframed windows, deep bathtubs, rich tapestries and a collection of artworks provide the rooms with a sense of timelessness that exemplifies the properties natural charm. Our superior room overlooking orchards of lemon trees evokes a sense of venturing back in time with its creaky wooden floorboards, heavy-set curtains and a wooden bed that all add to the charm of feeling like pampered royalty. We spent many hours exploring the ballrooms and expansive grounds, home to hedge mazes, herb gardens and a beautiful outdoor swimming pool, cut into the mountainside and offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. Similar to Lisbon, the Anantara Spa Tivoli Palácio de Seteais is the place to unwind and features only two treatment rooms for an exclusive clientele. When guests enter the spa, it is given over in its entirety - something we’ve not experienced before. The spa is situated inside a circular pigeon-house that has been converted into a quaint and intimate space where treatments are more specialised and many of the products are made from natural ingredients hand-picked from the hotel grounds. With only one dining option on site, the Seteais Restaurant is regarded as one of Sintra’s very best and treats diners to a royal experience complete with pressed white table clothes, dainty
cutlery, gold crockery and a menu of Portuguese favourites that have been reinterpreted and elevated to match the palatial dining room. Roasted duck magret, braised codfish and octopus are all prevalent on the menu and bookings are essential. Lisbon and Sintra are ideal for a combined visit to Portugal and are more than likely to leave you yearning to return. Providing guests with unrestrained luxury, high levels of service, excellent food and beverage and discretion, Tivoli hotels also offer several luxury properties along the Portuguese Algarve as well as in hotels further afield. Tivoli is undeniably a brand with a unique sense of style that embodies the warmth of Portuguese hospitality with its eyes firmly set on expansion. ✤

AMAL SHINE With the award-winning and leading voice of fashion and lifestyle in the UAE capital, Amal Salameh RAW VEGAN LUNCH EXPERIENCE AT FOUR SEASONS HOTEL ABU DHABI AT AL MARYAH ISLAND The Vegan world has always intrigued me, what do the plant-based community eat? What are the options available to them? How satisfying are their meal plans? Tons of questions were on my mind and the search for an authentic vegan dining experience began. Luckily my curiosity coincided with the announcement of the new Raw Vegan Menu crafted by Executive Sous Chef Christian Buenrostro at the Four Seasons Hotel Abu Dhabi, which you can indulge - yes, you heard right - actually enjoy and devour - in the lobby lounge, Al Meylas. Fun Fact for my western readers: Al Meylas is an Arabic word that translates to “The Living Room”. Now back to the food, according to the kitchen rules of raw cooking, the food is heated or "cooked" at temperatures not greater than 115 to 118 Fahrenheit (47 Celsius) to preserve nutrients and enzymes, diminish the energy used for cooking, and keep food in its most natural form. Here's what to expect - nine innovative, raw vegan dishes including starters, main courses and desserts. Highlights of the raw vegan menu include mix field mushroom ceviche, baby gem tacos, raw kale Caesar salad, the classic raw vegan pizza and nachos, pad Thai, and a sweet-yet-healthy ending, the decadent banana pie, fudge chocolate cake and blueberries cheesecake. It all tastes as lush as it sounds - trust me on this one! After devouring all the above dishes that came in the most impressive and colourful presentation, I would have to say that this unique culinary healthy offering is a great addition to their menu. Now I don’t have to worry about where to go for lunch or dinner with my vegan friends and I wouldn’t mind ordering these dishes for myself as they were oozing flavour and were super filling. Kudos to the Four Seasons Abu Dhabi team for keeping things inclusive for all their clientele as I’m sure this menu offering will be here to stay.
Yours fashionably, Amal 74

hat is your recipe for a good steakhouse? Is it the quality of the meat, or maybe the variety of the sides - how about atmosphere? Whatever your ingredients may be, Marco Pierre White Steakhouse & Grill (MPW) is bringing its A-game and we are HERE FOR IT! The brainchild of awardwinning celebrity chef, Marco Pierre White, is one of Abu Dhabi’s most elegant dining destinations; dramatic interiors of dark wood meet with the subdued shades of pristine white tablecloths and large cushy seating. Mood lighting gives every table an intimate vibe - whether you’re dining as a couple, with family or a group of friends - there is a sense of exclusivity in the air. The hard-to-miss back lit “flame wall” will be a quick talking pointing. It adds a touch of warmth and softness to the setting. We are welcomed by a friendly waitress who shows the same enthusiasm to all other guests that walk in through the door at MPW. Our order is taken by Nonny, who is exemplary in her tasks. She is incredibly knowledgeable on the menu, advising us about everything from marbling of the meat to the best dishes for the sort of flavours we like to try. Most of all, she seems wellversed in all things MPW. When we’re hovering over Mr. Lamb’s Shepherd’s Pie on the menu. Nonny shares a little story about this comfort food classic. It’s Marco's take on the traditional British dish which was inspired by Mr. Lamb, a kitchen porter, who worked for him at his renowned Box Tree Restaurant, Ilkley. Mr. Lamb was tasked with cooking for the restaurant team every week and he would always serve up Shepherd's Pie - what a lovely little anecdote to get the evening started? The menu at MPW is an innovative combination of grill cuisine and muchloved English fare, accompanied by an extensive grape selection, all under the close supervision of the talented Chef de Cuisine. Split into a neat and manageable amount, you’ll find Hors D’oeuvres, Classic Salads, Soups and Potages, Finest Quality Steaks, Sides, Main Boards and Fresh Vegetarian Dishes. Sharing is made possible as portion sizes, we learn, are more than enough to go around at least three to four people. But before we get down to business, let’s talk about the bread. A warm, fluffy loaf cut into four pieces steals our sense of smell. Moreover, each piece tears away effortlessly and we devour it with the accompanying butter. There has never been a simpler more indulgent pleasure in life than this oh-so-good bread. Careful not to get addicted - leave space for what’s to come. We begin with a few different dishes; Wheeler’s Crispy Calamari, Mr White’s Fresh Crab, Salad of Goats’ Cheese and Beetroot, and the Heritage Tomato and Burrata Salad. Each dish is presented with a raw yet refined technique - the salads are super fresh with the creamy Burrata stealing the show alongside the juiciest tomatoes. The crab is not only presented as a superior dish, it tastes impeccable. Scoop it up and put it on a piece of the toast melba - here you have an hors d’oeuvre that lives up to our every expectation. For mains, we choose a 250g Prime US Beef Grilled Centre Cut Tenderloin alongside the 250g Masterkobe 9 Grilled 35-Day Aged Striploin. Both are cooked medium well and retain a mouthwatering juiciness that is often difficult to achieve with meat - here, the chefs did an outstanding job. Our sides consist of the smoothest mashed potatoes we’ve tried in a long time; baked macaroni cheese, triple cooked fries and a green salad with truffle dressing. Once more, presentation is homely - like the dishes served up at a typical Sunday dinner. The macaroni cheese draws all the “mmmhs” and we fall into a few moments of silence as each bite of meat is savoured with gusto.

We know what you’re thinking and the answer is: of course, we had dessert. Out came the delicate blueberry cheesecake and the mighty chocolate fondant. The first was a classic coming together of flavours that works so well together - cheesecake lovers, this is a must-try. The latter was oozing with chocolate greatness and we fought for every last spoonful! By the end of our meal, several cups of green tea and a very strong espresso were seen sitting on our table. Let the food coma ensue! What made the entire experience more personable was the consistent efforts of every staff member who approached our table; each of them were experts on the menu and also had wonderful personalities to match. This made a world of difference. MPW is taking it back to basics - stripping down theatrics and dishing up what the chef knows best - authentic, hearty food with quality ingredients. It’s a meal we won’t forget for a long time to come. ✤

#KHABIB #CROWNED #LIGHTWEIGHT #KING #AT #EPIC #UFC #242 #SHOWDOWN UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov underlined his standing as the division’s best-ever fighter with a dominant victory over interim lightweight champion Dustin Poirier at UFC 242. Held in front of a sold-out crowd of nearly 14,000 at The Arena, on Abu Dhabi’s Yas Island, as part of the emirate’s week-long Abu Dhabi Showdown Week, the Russian survived a Poirier submission attempt in the third round, before turning the tables to submit the American through a rear naked choke and extend his career record to 28-0. With the Khabib-Poirier super bout dominating much of the UFC 242 build-up, the Abu Dhabi Showdown Week finale proved a clash for the ages as the 13-strong fight card threw up a host of tense encounters between athletes from 13 countries and five continents.

nspired by Mediterranean-style dining, paired with warehouse-stimulated design and a grape selection to make any vino connoisseur full of envy, The Warehouse is all about wowing guests with delicious small plates - although we soon learn that the portions are anything but generous - and a vivacious roster of sips to tempt every palate that crosses paths with this industrial, hip destination. On the evening we visit, there is a healthy capacity - the crowd is made up of laid-back diners, visible ADNECgoers and groups of friends having lively catch ups. The music is good, the staff are their usual fun and welcoming selves and we are, simply, starving! Ready to tuck into their new menu items, we didn’t hold back. First up from the Jars & Pots section is the Crisps & Dips - a mammoth platter made up of an assortment of corn and wheat chips alongside smoked salmon dip, spicy tomato relish and avocado chickpea dip. It’s the perfect choice of sharing nibbles that you order for a group who are primarily there to blow off steam and indulge in their favourite drinks. Each dip is spot on and we hover between the two types of chips to scoop up each one as the conversation flows. The Super Food Salad with Crispy Chicken brings together kale, avocado, pomegranate, edamame, rocca, roasted beetroot and berry vinaigrette. If there was ever to be a salad with all of our favourite ingredients in it, this would be it. Fresh and packed with flavour, there’s enough to go around at least three people - sharing concept done right. What followed was the biggest surprise of the meal. We didn’t expect to love the Sujouk & Rocca flat bread as much as we did. In fact, it was the one dish that was cleared out in minutes. The bread is fluffy yet retains a lovely golden crisp whilst the toppings of lamb and chicken sujouk, red onions, pomegranate and rocca leaves can only be described as genius cooking. The meat is juicy and adds rich texture to each bite - we honestly couldn’t get enough of it and raved about the dish for days to come. If you’re a carnivore at heart and there’s one thing you order when visiting The Warehouse, make sure it’s this! We steer into vegetarian territory with the moreish Black Bean & Portobello Burger topped with provolone glaze, pickled gherkin, tomato and jalapeño relish. There is something to be said about the restaurant that can deliver veggie options that are just as incredible as their meaty counterparts. With melted cheese oozing out the side and succulent patties wedged in between fluffy, hearty buns, these sliders were an absolute treat and very filling to say the least. A side of battered parmesan fries adds more crunch to our meal and we savour every helping. To top that off, the drinks we order are flawless. From the zero alcohol selection, the Basil Blush with basil, strawberries, lime, honey water and orange is as refreshing as it gets. Whilst the range of different red grape is of high quality and definitely to our liking.

Don’t leave The Warehouse without trying dessert. The Strawberry Yum, dubbed the “posh” house ice cream sundae may be the largest sundae we’ve ever seen. With a side of poppin’ candy, it’s an interactive dish that brings back childhood nostalgia. Check out our instagram to see exactly what we came face to face with - and took a pretty good shot at finishing it all. The Jack D’ - elicious Split is made up of whiskey-soaked bananas, spiked caramel, ice cream and jack chaser. It. Was. Unreal. Presented in an actual bottle of Jack Daniel’s, it’s a creative dessert made for those who can appreciate the use of the Tennessee beverage combined with a sweet ending. And it makes for a worthy Snapchat story too! The Warehouse doesn’t do things by halves. There’s no compromise on food, drinks, atmosphere or service. All are in perfect synch thanks to a passionate team, which is also evident the evening that we visit. For its impeccable consistency, it remains one of our favourite hangouts in the city. ✤

Saving Face FACT’s Angela Beitz indulges in a facial and massage at one of the capital’s most popular wellness retreats, Zayna Spa at Grand Millennium Al Wahda…
T
he brutal summer has taken a toll on my skin and it's time to get it sorted. A com-bination of humidity, high temps and AC have left me with both dry and old skin and more breakouts than I care to admit. Grand Millennium Al Wahda is a long standing hotel in the capital and tucked away inside is their excellent spa - Zayna Spa. This is truly a great spa and a real favourite in Abu Dhabi for its consistency and for choice of treatments. The spa staff are super lovely and you'll feel the relaxation wash over as soon as you step indoors. The spa is large with over ten different treatment rooms for men and women and has everything from massages, facials and a host of other luxurious treatments to help you unwind. I'm here for a 90-minute facial and massage using Esse products. At Zayna Spa you get changed in the large treatment room which is a nice touch not having to mess around getting changed in the locker room - it feels more per-sonal. As mentioned, the rooms are spacious and modern with a rain shower, large bathtub, lounge chair, changing area and treatment table. The experience starts with a soothing foot scrub and then I move to the massage table. The facial, which is personalised to suit my troubled skin will resurface the skin and attack blackheads and breakouts. Using products from Esse which feel fresh and hydrating; my skin is already feeling happy. My face is triple-cleansed using a very soothing cleanser and then it’s exfoliated. My therapist is gentle but thorough with the exfoliation gently setting as my skin is very fine and sensitive. My skin is then steamed and then extractions are done to make sure all pores are clean. An uplift-ing facial massage is then performed on the face and neck with a serum before ap-plying a thick hydrating mask. To complete the treatment, a serum, eye cream and spf is applied. My skin is now hydrated, clear and balanced. I feel super relaxed and it’s so refreshing to have a great facial that will give you results instantly. I then head to the relaxation area to chill out for a tea and to relax further. This is genuine-ly a fabulous spa with an extensive menu and excellent staff and it's easy to see why it’s a firm favourite. ✤

SKIN SOLUTIONS Skin woes? Iridium Spa at The St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort has the perfect facial to really get your skin sorted as FACT’s Angela Beitz finds out…
T
his spa needs no introduction, it was a winner at our FACT Spa & Wellness Awards last year and continues to impress with its array of amazing treatments. As soon as you step into the venue you will feel tranquil and relaxed. The sound of water falling puts you in a zen mood almost instantly. I’m are ushered to the changing rooms and would be happy to even just spend the afternoon here with a sauna, steam room and whirlpool. The changing rooms are truly beautiful with art deco interiors and large black chandeliers that are stunning. Be sure to bring your bathers so that you can enjoy these facilities as they are super lovely and will get you in the right frame of mind for your spa treatment. As my skin has been problematic of late I am trying the Oxygen Facial. This is an effective treatment that deep-cleans and detoxifies skin while relieving stress that includes an innovative enzymatic detox and steam to open and purify pores as well as a meticulous extraction process, revealing extraordinarily soft and radiant skin. This triple enzymatic exfoliation system has a long lasting renewing and rejuvenating effect. I am shown to the tranquil treatment room and while my feet are being scrubbed, my therapist Ana suggests doing a full skin analysis to really get to the root of the problem. I lay on the lush treatment table and Ana uses a small hand held device which uses 3D imaging to show results for acne, pores, wrinkles, sun damage and texture. This then links back to a small iPad which shows the results to show the average of where you should be and where you actually are. My issues are my pores and sun damage which are both above average. I was a bit startled but Ana assures me that this is normal for people living here dry air, hot weather and sun exposure - but she tells me that the effects can be controlled and prevented. The facial starts with a double cleanse to remove any make- up or impurities and surface dirt. Ana then gives my skin a really good looking over. My face is then lightly exfoliated and a toner is applied. The main USP of this facial is the triple enzymatic exfoliation using Glycolic Acid. It starts with a glycolic acid applied to my face and neck which tingles slightly but is normal. This is left on for ten minutes and then a glycolic powder is applied over it which again slightly tingles. What it is doing is deeply cleaning and resurfacing your pores right down the the deepest layers of your skin. The final step is Glycolic Gel that is applied on top and is meant to bubble to really get down the the surface of pores. This feels weird but you know it's really deep cleaning - it has the same feeling of bicarb soda and vinegar mixed together. This is then all rubbed off to reveal very clean and smooth skin. The next step is staying off the face to then extract stubborn dirt in pores, and then a beautiful mask that is left on for 20 minutes while Ana massages my arms. After this is done, the face is applied with serum, moisturisers, eye cream and SPF. This facial gives immediate results and I cannot believe how much more balanced and hydrated my face looks. It's also such an amazing feeling to know you have very clean pores and I would definitely recommend doing this once a month. The Oxygen Facial really works to eliminate toxins, helps repair cellular damage and deeply hydrates, restoring your skin's radiance the results are evident for a good week afterwards too. ✤

HIT REFRESH In need of some serious pampering? We’ve got the answer. FACT’s Angela Beitz heads to Atarmia Spa at Park Hyatt Abu Dhabi Hotel & Villas to destress with a fabulous new treatments.
T
here are so many reasons that we love Park Hyatt Abu Dhabi but one of the main ones is their spa, Atarmia. Spread over two floors, the spa features nine spacious treatment rooms, including one VIP couple’s treatment room as well as indoor and outdoor relaxation zones with the privacy of separate areas for ladies and men. The wellness centre offers an outdoor 25-metre lap pool, an array of hydrotherapy facilities, a manicure and pedicure salon, a fitness room with the latest equipment, a sauna, steam room and whirlpool. When booking a treatment at Atarmia Spa, they give you the option of spending the whole day at the spa to use to facilities which is such a bonus and not done by a lot of other hotels. Whether you want to use the gym, relax in the hydro pool or spend your afternoon at the beautiful private swimming pool your day will be well spent. I arrive at the spa and I’m welcomed and given a refreshing green tea and homemade health
cookies while I wait for the therapist. Today, I'm trying the 90-minute Voyager Journey. I'm shown to the treatment room which is spacious and follows the same minimalist theme of the overall hotel. I change into a lovely robe and slippers and the therapist scrubs and cleanses my feet. The Voyager Journey is a complete top-to-toe relaxation journey, incorporating dry body brushing, scalp massage, stretching and body massage that replicates the movement of the sea combining both gentle and stimulating movements. It's the ultimate luxury treatment to relieve aches and pains tailored to your individual needs. I lay on the unbelievably soft massage table and the treatment starts with the dry body brushing. Then the blissful massage is done and I drift off to sleep. This treatment is utterly rejuvenating and so relaxing; it allows tension to drift away and for a new you to be uncovered. Needless to say, I left the spa feeling refreshed, ready to take on the Abu Dhabi bustle and rave about this perfect journey. ✤

Tell us more about your day-to-day role and what keeps it challenging and exciting... My day-to-day depends on if I need to work in Dubai or Abu Dhabi. As the Dubai branch is set to open soon, my day depends on those meetings. When in Abu Dhabi, I spend my mornings in the office until lunchtime. I go to 99 Sushi Bar & Restaurant Abu Dhabi for lunch as we always have new dishes to try. Sometimes I like to try those dishes that have been questioned or challenged by our guests, and investigate with our chef to see how we can improve them. After lunch, I sit with the chef and restaurant manager to go through dayto-day operations. 98

What are some of your favourite cultural hotspots in Abu Dhabi and why? Louvre Abu Dhabi is a masterpiece recognised worldwide. Just the architecture itself makes it worth a visit. It is without question my favourite spot in the UAE. I have to admit that I have not been in Qasr Al Watan yet, but it is in my to-do list for when summer ends.
Share with us some of your professional goals for the rest of the year... My first professional goal is always to do better than last year. This is what my shareholders expect and the first objective in every business. As of today I am satisfied as both the sales and GOP look better than last year, and this is very comforting. The second goal of this year was to make the 99 sushi Dubai project into a reality. In 2020, 99 sushi bar will open its doors for all those Dubai clients that always ask me when about Dubai.
