“
T
Endless effort, endless humility, endless modesty.” - Rain
his issue has been a long time coming. The conversation surrounding the rise of modest living has been at the forefront of society, in the Gulf and beyond, for the past few years. Modesty comes in many different forms and it’s certainly having its moment. From frugal-folk tribes living the #nospend life to fashion houses hiring uber-haute models, who happen be wearing a hijab, more than ever, there’s a basic desire to be modest in the way e live, shop and dress. Now, in 2018, we can firmly say that aspects like modest fashion and modern representations of Muslim women in the mainstream media are slowly starting to change for the better – and proving to be more than just a “trend” thanks to social media and other content-sharing tools. In a September special, we take a look at the rise of the modest lifestyle and how everything from the birth of bloggers and influencers to the images of hijab-wearing cover girls has contributed to the growth of all things modest. Turn to p27 and let our thought-provoking feature take you on the journey of modest to mainstream. When you’ve finished reading about how modest living has taken over the world, turn over and check out some of the most incredible women who have helped to propel it forward in our 16 Style Setters to follow on the gram (p35). Right here in the UAE, we met up with two Emirati sisters who are championing the modest fashion movement. Meet the ladies behind The Orphic for an insight into their newest collection and stunning embrace of faith and style (p40). Of course, a special issue deserves a beautiful cover – and we found just the right lady to give us one. Bahraini Digital Artist Hala AlAbbasi talks to us on p47 and shares her work, creative skills and modest lifestyle choices. Those looking for the perfect September staycation, needn’t look any further than the gorgeous Saadiyat Rotana Resort & Villas. From its beach house-inspired rooms to its next level restaurants, this month’s wanderlust envy is close to home on p54. It’s all about quality in our dining pages this month as we visit BU! Abu Dhabi’s La Familia Brunch (p83); whilst city favourite Market Kitchen makes our Culinary Spotlight (p87); and the Foodie Corner takes a pit-stop for a Japanese lunch at Kaizen (p91) – all of this and plenty more news on eating out, creative activities and all the best deals to keep your bellies full and boredom at bay! Welcome back to the sandpit – and the humidity – for those of you who have had a lovely summer away! Whatever you say, there’s no place like the Gulf – and we’re going to spend September enjoying (trying to, at least) all that UAE life has to offer. ☺

AFTERNOON TEA HAS LONG BEEN the tradition of ladies who lunch, brunch and spend leisurely days catching up with friends. It’s a foodie tradition that has taken over the world and in Abu Dhabi, especially; a good afternoon tea can be the high of someone’s week. Enter the exquisite Pearl Lounge at the Grand Hyatt Abu Dhabi Hotel and let the sophistication of this eclectic spot carry you to your table and cushy seat. Pearl Lounge is beautifully striking with contemporary design, colossal pearl chandeliers, and a culinary selection with something for every palate. The chic new venue welcomes guests with a daily a la carte savoury and sweet menu, as well as, interactive, live stations including an irresistible creperie and rich chocolate delights. Things are a little different here. You have lavish dessert stations to wander and pick out your kryptonite; there’s a chocolate table, and two varied Arabic sweets’ counters that boast everything from a variety of nuts to fresh Turkish delight, baklava, biscuits and more. You can select your favourites to satisfy your sweet tooth, including oven fresh crispy kunefe, akawi cheese and spiced kumquat compote from the live stations. Of course, we had to have it ALL! Our favourite, you ask. The classic French recipe that is the Crepe Suzette - you haven’t lived until you’ve tried it here! 8

Then there’s the a la carte menu too. It incorporates international flavours and dishes and gives them a Hyatt twist. We savoured the indulgent Crispy Glass Noodle and Shrimp Spring Rolls with the Spicy Fries coated in olive oil, pecorino and pepper flakes so, so addictive - and the Grilled Lamb Loin, Avocado, Toamtoes, and Shallot Salad with Green Chilli Lime dressing. The salad was so good that we re-created it at home the very next day! Afternoon Teas are served daily, with unique flavours specially designed for Pearl Lounge including the Smoky black pearl, a signature with a blend of Ceylon and China black tea. What makes this afternoon tea experience stand out? With dedication to ambience, Pearl Lounge’s resident artist Rié Furuse, singer-pianist, performs daily from 5pm until 9pm. A Parisian voice from Japan, guests can expect jazz, fusion, funk and jazz-pop compositions. Notoriously enchanting, the live music showcases will include debut new material and classics too. Sounds that are as idyllic as the surroundings you’re in. ✤

WAYS OF SEEING Ways of Seeing, curated by Sam Bardaouil and Till Fellrath, features works by 26 internationallyacclaimed artists and artist collectives from the region and beyond. NYU ABU DHABI ART GALLERY, the university’s academic museum, will open its fall exhibition titled Ways of Seeing on September 3. This international group exhibition is based on John Berger’s seminal 1972 text on visual culture, Ways of Seeing, in which he shifted the emphasis of art criticism away from the professional art-expert and relocated it within the grasp of the layperson. In taking its cue from Berger’s groundbreaking argument, this exhibition invites the viewer to actively engage with the artwork, and to explore the ways by which artists assign forms and concepts that seem familiar with renewed appearances and meanings. Curator Sam Bardaouil, said: “Artists use form and technique to express something about themselves and the world. Each of the artworks on display beckons us to take a second look, upon which the contours of a new reality begin to emerge.” Bringing together 26 artists and artist collectives with 41 works, the exhibition spans a variety of media from painting, sculpture, and photography to sound, film, and installation. In addition, historical artworks and objects punctuate the contemporary displays. Through these works, the curators present the various strategies that artists employ to re-configure our perception, as viewers, of the world around us. Curator Till Fellrath, said: “We encourage viewers to be active rather than passive in the way they look at the works in this exhibition. There is no one ‘correct’ way to look at art, and our wish is that our audiences should both be aware of and embrace their individual reactions and points of view, as these are borne of unique personal experiences.” Several artists in the exhibition, such as James Turrell, Hans-Peter Feldmann, and Fred Sandback, blur the boundaries between the artwork and the space in which it is displayed. Others, such 12

as James Webb, Vik Muniz, and Gustav Metzger, offer the viewer new ways of accessing the artwork. A few, like Shana Moulton, James Casebere, and Andreas Gursky, push the technical and formal possibilities of their genre. Works by Salvador Dali, Mona Hatoum, Alicja Kwade, or Hassan Sharif change our perception of familiar objects by altering their function. Finally, images of people engaged in the act of looking, in works by Thomas Struth and Lateefa bint Maktoum, make us ponder the way in which narratives are constructed through what we see. ✤
GO: WAYS OF SEEING WILL BE ACCOMPANIED BY A FULL PROGRAMME OF PUBLICS EVENTS, INCLUDING TALKS, WORKSHOPS, AND FAMILY-FRIENDLY ACTIVITIES. THE EXHIBITION WILL RUN UNTIL NOVEMBER 17. VISIT WWW. NYUAD-ARTGALLERY.ORG FOR MORE INFORMATION.

WAREHOUSE421 HAPPENINGS This month, Warehouse421 returns with another diverse program of engaging talks, workshops and exhibitions for the people of Abu Dhabi and the UAE.
OPENEING SEPTEMBER 8 Community & Critique: SEAF 2017/18 Cohort 5 Show This exhibition represents a culmination of a year-long engagement in the Salama bin Hamdan Emerging Artists program (SEAF). Bringing their works into Warehouse421 means stepping outside the intimacy of the SEAF studios, into the culture and community of the city. Presenting their work in a professional space provides an opportunity to share and speak about it with others; and thus becomes an important moment within their continuing process. The show will run until 4 November.
In this workshop, participants will learn the relaxing art of macramé, which involves tying knots to create beautiful items. After learning just three basic knots, participants will be able to create a modern plant hanger on Friday, including a terracotta pot and saucer. On Saturday, they will learn just a couple more knots in order to make their own Macramé Wall Hanging. All supplies are included, including black or white cotton rope. The final macramé wall hanging on Saturday will be approximately 50 cm x 80 cm. Takes place from 11am to 2pm, for ages 16+ and priced at AED380. Ran by Meredith Huston, Founder of Turquoise Boutique Studio.
SEPTEMBER 29 Redefining Space: Between Borders Cuadro Fine Art Gallery will present artworks by Camille Zakharia. While the photographic collage works carry a fluid abstract characteristic on the surface, upon close reflection, subtle patterns composed of specific signifiers and symbols begin to emerge on the surface, reflecting the artist’s itinerary journey away from his native land, and his attempt to find harmony within the boundaries of places he calls home. The collages are often intentionally unplanned, offering the artist a path for meditation and self-exploration. Visitors can view and purchase his artworks from 8 to 30 September. In partnership with Cuadro Fine Art Gallery
Introduction to 2D Portraiture Participants in this workshop will learn basic grayscale drawing and painting skills, incorporating shapes and values. Beginning with a black and white self-portrait, which will be gridded out into tiled blocks, participants will then use the blocks as a reference to begin drawing their portrait block-byblock, and assigning a value (from black to grey to white) to each shape. The final step will be to use acrylic paints to fill in the shapes in shades of black, grey, or white. Takes place from 11am to 3pm, for ages 16+ and priced at AED220. Ran by Fatima Albudoor, Visual Artist & SEAF Fellow. ✤

M IS FOR MODESTY Like any other device, modesty has become a tool for many women all over the world. It shows character and confidence where the heart and mind rule the body. In a time where traditional and modern meet in the middle, more and more women are accomplishing extraordinary things without compromising their style or their faith. FACT’s Shabana Adam explores the rise of the modest lifestyle in the Gulf and beyond, and why it has taken so long for a generations-aged concept to finally break into the mainstream‌

hat do Nura Afia, Amena Khan, and Ibtihaj Muhammad have in common? Clue: it’s not just their very evident Muslim names. These three women did what some would have believed unimaginable even a decade ago. They broke into the mainstream to become the first hijab-wearing representatives in industries that are traditionally targeted towards western aesthetics and features. Nura wowed makeup experts and became an official ambassador for CoverGirl in 2017, while Amena was cast in a major haircare campaign for L’Oréal Paris Elvive – though short-lived – earlier this year, and Ibtihaj is not only a bad-ass sabre fencer, she’s the first Muslim American woman to wear a hijab while competing for the United States in the 2016 Olympics. All women, all Muslim, all wearing the hijab. And all of these achievements were made just over the past couple of years. My question is, what took so long for the world to stand up and notice these strong, capable, beautiful women and the thousands more who embrace their passions and talents without compromising their creative wardrobes and their faith? The answer could very well lie in the rapid rise of the modest lifestyle. In order to appreciate the impact and growth of modesty into the mainstream, we need to understand who it effects, benefits, and whether we’re witnessing an evolution or a revolution. So, what is modest fashion? Interpretations can differ depending on who you ask, but a widely accepted definition would be: a sense of personal style while remaining relatively covered. That means, high collars, long sleeves and hemlines, or looser clothing, for example – formerly “uncool” wardrobe attire that has gone from drab to fab. Generally speaking, modest fashion is a personal choice which simply means wearing more conventional clothing inspired by everything from your cultural norms to the latest runway collections. “When I hear the words modest fashion, I think of my hijab and to me it means dressing while adhering to my faith,” says Yasmine, a British-Lebanese modest lifestyle blogger who goes by the instagram name @undercoverstyling. “I think it has taken time for modest fashion to break into the mainstream because there are examples that are set from fashion hubs like New York, Paris and London where modesty was not considered when designing,” Yasmine explains. “Now with the rise of social media as well as the rise of modest bloggers and celebrities, modest fashion is making headlines.” She’s right. MODEST CULTURE • fashion houses such as Dolce & Gabbana, DKNY and Oscar de la Renta, have caught on to the booming market with exclusive collections, shining a spotlight on modest-wear. In fact, it is estimated that the international Muslim clothing market is forecast to be worth $373 billion by 2022, according to the latest Global Islamic Economy report, produced by Reuters. We’re also seeing the likes of London and Dubai; two of the most stylish cities in the world, now host an annual Modest Fashion Week. Nike has launched the Pro Hijab for modest sportswear, whilst Japanese fashion chain Uniqlo introduced its Uniqlo x Hana Tajima Collection with a line of hijabs, and H&M has featured a Muslim model, Mariah Idrissi, wearing a headdress in one of their major campaigns. Plus, we all remember the time a 15-year-old Saudi teenager demanded a hijab-clad emoji – of course, WhatsApp made it happen. It is rare for a multi-billion dollar industry to fly under the radar for so long, as the modest fashion sector has. But, it sleeps no more.

For Yasmine, who loves combining fabrics, colours, prints and textures to make a bold statement, sharing the beauty of dressing modestly was one of the many reasons she decided to start @undercoverstyling on the gram. “I wanted to encourage other young women who don’t feel represented and they can be inspired by the colours, designs, and fabrics,” she says. “The use of social media has given Muslim women a voice and exposure that they never had before. We are able to communicate around the world and show people what the life of a modern, Muslim woman is really like,” Yasmine tells us. “It is the same for many communities around the world but especially for Muslim women because of the stereotypes that have been so prevalent previously. It means we can take back some control and show people a glimpse into our world.” As the western hemisphere takes note of how modest choices are, simply, a normal part of life for millions of Muslim women, it still remains a misconception in many parts of the world, that women who wear the hijab or more traditional clothing, are oppressed. “Many people in the west still lack knowledge and understanding of the history and the privilege of wearing a hijab,” says UAE-based British-Pakistani teacher Suneela Aslam. “Despite immigrants being an integral part of western life, some communities in places like America or the UK simply don’t invest enough time in learning about our differences.” Leading us to question whether the modest lifestyle is just another passing trend – one that blings cha-ching for profitmaking more so than a movement to break cultural boundaries. “I am all about breaking the stereotypes,” Yasmine says. “I wanted to create a platform that was positive and encouraging for modest women. The hijab for me is an honor and I wanted to show Muslim women that it is not limiting,” she continues. “I have travelled the world and my hijab has been a way for me to speak and deal with people and to tear down any misconceptions.”

who can highlight and express whatever message they have to offer with the support of various western companies. They are the reflection of modern-day society – one that is made up of a multitude of races and ethnicities, where certain folk adopt a survival strategy of embracing their duality to flow in between two cultures. Halima, for example, is Somali and American, a Muslim in a principally Christian country who inspires modesty whilst successfully walking the world’s biggest fashion weeks. “Hijabi models have an opportunity right now to change the conversation and show people how to embrace two worlds,” Suneela says. “Similarly, the fashion industry must help to educate the masses by normalising diversity instead of segregating it as a novelty or a trend.” It is important to note that whilst acceptance of modest icons has helped to
Let’s take a look at how western institutions have picked certain personalities to advocate for modesty. Take Halima Aden, the SomaliAmerican Miss Minnesota USA contestant, who competed wearing a hijab and a “burkini” – another first in the states. She was quickly signed to IMG Models, the agency that represents the Hadid sisters and went on to walk on the runway – wearing a hijab – for Yeezy, Max Mara and Alberta Ferretti. Is her success a fairy tale waiting to fade out or is her mainstream modest lifestyle an agent for change? It’s no secret that models like Halima Aden, Mariah Idrissi and supermodel Zara Mohamed Abdulmajid, widelyknown as Iman, were chosen for their gifted genes, but also as individuals 32

dispel some negative attitudes towards Muslim women, or any woman, who chooses to dress traditionally, there are still some damaging perspectives towards religion in some countries that have also deterred the growth of the modest lifestyle in selected markets. Restrictions like the burka ban in some parts of Europe or banned veils in some Chinese provinces means that even the most successful and far-reaching modest influencers, struggle to connect and relay their positive vibes and messages. Hold on, shouldn’t we leave it up to women to decide for themselves what they want to wear and how that crisp white Zara shirt or the patterned abaya and matching head scarf makes them feel? Tülin Meric, a Bahrain-based BritishTurkish modest fashion blogger running the platform @trestouline, says: “I would say that I’m freer than most women. Wearing modest clothing allows me to choose what I display or don’t display of my body. It allows me to express myself
through colour and design. “Dressing modestly also naturally gives off an indication on my religious stance,” Tülin explans. “I have a sense of liberation because there is an invisible barrier set between you and others – men – and that makes me feel safe and in control. I would say this is the ultimate freedom for any woman.” Choosing to live modestly in all or certain aspects of life is not a new concept. Generations of women, of many different faiths, have been covered whilst accomplishing great things and breaking that glass ceiling. Here’s hoping that this contemporary uprising and progression will not burn out anytime soon. For the moment, let us celebrate the Nura’s and Ibtihaj’s of the world, as they continue to remind people everywhere that you don’t need permission to be who you are and to go after what you want. ✤

ADVERTORIAL •
Hi ladies, what does the term “Modest Fashion” mean to you? Mariam: Modern comfortable wear for modern women; that is simpler in details and has less exposure of body parts. Amna: Definitely fashionable. Trendy pieces that are suitable for everyone with less exposure. The Orphic’s new Pre-Fall 2018 collection “has been designed with the modern Arab woman in mind” – describe her to us, who is the woman that buys your clothing? Mariam: Of course, the modern Arab woman is our main audience, but our collections are aimed at all women who choose to make a statement whether it be bold, smart or unique. Amna: Our customers are those women who are looking to stand out in a crowd, be unique and chic. Those women who are on the hunt for fashion at its highest quality. Tell us about your background and when you first decided that you wanted to become a source of support and celebration for women who choose to dress modestly… Mariam: I am a computer engineer with a master’s degree in engineering management. Amna and I decided to start this journey while we were in college. The idea and prospect of starting a fashion label popped up many times over the course of the last few years but it is only this year that we decided to take a leap of faith and move forward. Amna: I have a Bachelors in MIS. However, fashion has always been close to both our hearts, as we were on the constant lookout for modest wear that was stylish, classy, different and sometimes bold. Our search for this style led us to create The Orphic and helped us cater to a gap we have seen in the market as customers ourselves. fact magazine

in a pair of our trousers or buttons on high-waisted pants. We blend style and modesty together through choosing the right kind of quality fabric, rich in colour and texture, heavy with signature patterns presented in a traditional style but, keeping it modern. Providing mix-and-match pieces also helps us reach out to the right clientele as it offers options for a variety of people’s personal taste and style. How would you describe the connection between fashion, modesty, religion and art? Is there room for them all to exist side by side? Mariam: I believe there is definitely a relation between these four significant aspects of life and whether there is room for them to exist together depends solely on the individual, their beliefs and way of living. Amna: There is definitely a connection between all of them, but as Mariam said, it does depend on how a person decides to use these factors together and apply them into their lifestyle. Talk to us about the name of the brand – “The Orphic” – it’s original and memorable. Is there a story behind it? Mariam: Actually, that’s exactly why we choose it - we wanted a name that was original, memorable and reflects the way we would like our clients to feel when wearing our pieces. We kept searching for synonyms to the adjectives we aimed to find in our clientele. Amna: The Orphic is a name that could be used as an adjective and a noun. We wanted our brand name to be unique and catchy, and at the same time, reflecting our sense of style and unique pieces for every ‘orphic’ woman. The pieces by The Orphic are for “modest to vivacious dressers” – how do you blend style and modesty to reach the right clientele? Mariam and Amna: The key is to listen and survey what our potential clientele want and give them exactly that. We create cuts and styles that are internationally popular but have a touch of us, and our creative vision in them which could be as simple as lines 42

What do you think about the current state of modest fashion in relation to traditionally edgy or urban brands? Some big brands have had modest fashion specific campaigns and collections – is this a positive sign or just another drive for profit? Mariam and Amna: Definitely a mix of both. It’s a tactic a lot of brands are using to infiltrate undiscovered target markets and create conversation about collaborative styles. In the end, it works in the favour of building profit and makes for a bountiful push in changing the current fashion narrative too. Your designs are handmade locally within the UAE,
Q&A •
why was it important to keep the production side of The Orphic close to home? Mariam: To ensure the quality of work and production, it was very important that we had easy access to the groundwork of our designs going from paper to cloth. Amna: We are looking to provide people with the best quality of work and keeping the production local allows us to do that. There’s been a clear rise in modest fashion content in every aspect of life. Fashion, travel, and women’s empowerment - are Muslim women finally finding platforms for expression or is it more a response to what’s happening in the world right now? Mariam: Probably a bit of both but I believe mostly because Muslim women are finding their ground. There has been an increase in ad campaigns internationally where they have included Muslim women wearing the hijab, whether it’s fashion clothes or makeup campaigns. Not only ads but also in American TV shows, there is a noticeable rise in hijabi/Muslim women. Amna: I think Muslim women found their platform for expressing themselves through social media too. Given how big a platform Instagram can be, it has sparked a revolution of acceptance through the Muslim influencers and their take on society, life, beauty, basically everything that gets people to notice. Look at the Middle East itself; Muslim women are running successful campaigns, businesses and agendas. There is no limitation to how far we will go as a community. Share with us some quick style advice for girls who are keeping modest but want to show some flair? Mariam: Always look for something that will make you stand out. For me, I choose pieces with unique fabrics or unusual cuts. Maybe a unique pattern distributed in a modern or unusual way. Amna: Look for something that suits your sense of style and your body type. Not all body types are the same and not all cuts suit everyone. Finding the right fit and cut is imperative for all women who are looking to step their style game up. fact magazine

DARING, DREAMY AND DEFIANTLY DIGITAL Another strong young lady in all her vibrancy and talent – there;s a good reason why Hala AlAbbasi is our arts spotlight this month. FACT’s Shabana Adam talks to Bahraini Digital Artist and Calligraphist about creative spark, representations of modest life and the connection between fashion, religion and art… fact magazine

H
ala AlAbbasi’s instagram profile is a gallery of bold colours and strong images; portraits of women, depictions of summer in the Gulf, and plenty of iconic imagery that exudes an overwhelming sense of fun and positivity. “Beauty and nature inspires me,” she says. “When I start to draw, I allow myself to be guided by the work which is in the process of being born. I have confidence in it. I do not think about it. The hours on each artwork differs and depends on the style of the design, and the details which I dig into to create the final result. It took me years to get to where I am now by practicing art everyday,” Hala explains. It’s important to highlight that Hala’s creative side is a result of a type of art that has been around since the 1970s, and various names have been used to describe it. For the sake of modern day, we’ll go with Digital Art. This is where an image is predominantly computer generated, scanned or drawn using a tablet. Hala mostly uses her iPad Pro and Apple pencil as well as the Procreate App to produce her illustrations and portraits. She also utilises vector-drawing software with Adobe Illustrator by using the pin tool and shapes, which are outlined and can be filled with various colours and patterns. This tends to produce a harder edge or graphic look for her professional work. The process might be a cool and contemporary one, but the philosophy is still one of a traditional artist. “When it comes to the tools and techniques, I would say that art is not about the tools used to create it, but the vision, message, or emotion of the artist who can express their idea through lines, form, colour, pigmentation, composition and rhythm,” Hala says. “The artist can combine different features, effects, techniques and media to create their own unique vision.” If you’re new to the world of Digital Art, don’t let it intimidate you. The images are just as beautiful and daring, in some cases even more so, than a traditional pencil drawing or painting. Colour is more vivid, expression is deeper and there’s a whole new dimension added to something as simple as a portrait. “Digital art is like any other art,” Hala tells us. “It’s just created by using different tools than the more traditional arts. It took me years to draw everyday and experiment with different styles until I found what I love the most. “So I decided to focus on the digital side of my artworks, because that is what reflects me the most, and I also enjoy it so much,” she continues. “When it comes to the digital world, I feel like it is much less restricted than conventional mediums for artistic integration and manipulation. “Moreover, moving in between reality and the digital world gives me a push to do more and be more, it gives me hope and joy and all I want is to reflect this to others. It’s my gateway, and it’s my freedom,” she adds. Hala is not only challenging critics in the industry who believe that digital work has a lack of connection to an audience, she is also championing a form of art that is often overlooked by putting her own stamp on it, whilst living a free lifestyle driven by choice. She often draws portraits of women, random faces, (she even produced our incredible cover) as symbols of beauty 48

and strength. “Women in general, they inspire me the most,” Hala shares. “They reflect the real beauty and real power and strength in this world. I look for the depth in each woman, which can be found in all of us. Thriving women give meaning to life, and add hope to this world which reflects my purpose of creating artworks centered around them.” A refreshing perspective and one of the reasons why we chose Hala as our arts spotlight this month is, of course, to learn more about her opinions and experience of modest living as a young, Arab artist. It’s interesting to find that Hala, like hundreds of thousands of Muslim women everywhere, views modest fashion as a form of expression that boosts confidence. “Modest fashion gives me more options of clothing and to be creative in how I put together my outfits,” she says. “I now think outside the box and have developed an individual sense of style. It gives me the ability to dress in what I love but to add my own artistic twist to keep my outift elegant and simple, which in turn allows me freedom to express myself publicly.” When asked: how would you describe the connection between fashion, modesty, religion and art? Is there room for them all to exist side by side? Hala says: “If there is one thing that connects all four, in my opinion, it would be freedom. The freedom of choosing and matching colours, patterns, materials and styles and to be who you are as a woman. “Fashion and modesty reflect the world around it, and it could be for anyone which can be perceived and interpreted in a myriad of ways. Although, Muslim women who dress modestly are highly visible both on the streets of modern cities and in the media,” she adds. “When it comes to all four, it is important to reflect the beauty of modesty by being inspired by art, religion, and fashion.”

Back to Hala’s creative flair, her love of digital art began at an early stage in life, and even back then, it was something about the vivacity of the images that stirred her. “I remember as a kid, I would always pay attention to graphics,” Hala recalls. “They were a reflection of what I loved and my thoughts. The look, materials, quality, colours and feel were so desirable to me. I would observe and study the colours, patterns, design and illustrations and soon enough I wanted to discover the digital world to create what I love the most,” she says. Hala’s energy is becoming of her work. She is unapologetically a digital artist, a thinker, a celebrator of life and a staunch supporter of women in all their forms – fierce, vulnerable, outspoken or shy – and you get to see this through her dreamy and sometimes mysterious images. Alongside the modest lifestyle movement there’s a growing artistic revolution taking place – one that is challenging conventional art forms and garnering the attention of people in the Gulf and beyond. Hala is a part of this cool, unbound, selfdetermined 21st century crusade, and it’s time for the critics to sit up and take note! ✤

Q: Do you remember the very first piece of art or illustration that you created – what was it and how did it make you feel? A: During my childhood years at school, I remember when I first started to use the mouse on the computer to draw with Paint. I drew three girls and I loved how it made me feel, as it was a real hard challenge to put all of my focus and control on it. When I did the first one, I wanted to do more. Deep down I believed in my skills and abilities. I was always interested and I explored with different drawing applications and used adobe photoshop for the first time back then. I was obsessed to learn more and grow. I simply enjoyed every little process with every little detail I made. I knew then that I never wanted to stop. I wanted to embrace myself and let my passion and love for digital art drive me wherever it was going to take me. Q: What would you say to people who think that women who choose to dress modestly are not “free”? A: Modest fashion isn’t limited to Muslim women; it’s also popular internationally. Modest fashion shows love to women and speaks awareness and wisdom to others when it comes to covering up to feel comfortable and accepted within most communities. It feels great to be able to dress in a modern yet stylish and beautiful way that brings confidence to be more fashion-forward. The biggest brands and fashion companies
have started to launch hijab and abaya collections within their clothing lines in the last two years. Muslim women can now express themselves freely. Dressing modest for women shows self-respect and love of each one to others, and lets them get creative freely without being judged by others. Q: What advice would you give to up-and-coming, young, budding illustrators or Digital Artists? A: I believe that every artist has their own creative ‘truth’ which I think matters the most. It’s about taking many tiny baby steps to achieve and maintain quality and continuity. It’s about commitment and dedication. It has to do with inhaling and exhaling. Getting in depth, letting it be with no expectations. What I love about art as a form is that it has no limitations or restrictions; art is a total freedom. Any beginner illustrator or digital artist has to start from somewhere, experiment with drawing apps, electronic brushes and tools that help you to translate hand motions, cutting and pasting to create a new look and pose real challenge to those who explore these new digital avenues until they grow internally to be extraordinary.

ROCK
Raise Vibration
By Lenny Kravitz
Combining good old-fashioned rock with glam and soul has always been Lenny Kravitz’s magic formula. After ushering in the gritty rock music era of the 1980’s, the American singer-songwriter is back with another hit record. Promising to be one of Kravitz’s most eclectic; Raise Vibration features the singer playing most of the instruments himself with longtime guitarist Craig Ross as the only collaborator. A ruminative commentary on the current global state of affairs, Kravitz’s eleventh studio album is all about moving forward through higher understanding. Displaying his discontent with the sociopolitical climate, It’s Enough is a lengthy single featuring a distinct soulful groove. A socially-conscious gem, the track sums up the sentiment of the times while delivering an absolute banger. Known for always sticking to his own beat, Kravitz holds nothing back on his latest release. An atmospheric funk single, Low deals with the issue of preconceptions in the beginning of a relationship. Its multilayered vocals and guest appearance by Michael Jackson give it a musical edge. Staying true to his unique brand of rock, Kravitz transcends all musical boundaries while giving the world a lot to think about.

ade up of beach-inspired interiors and modern Arabic architecture, the luxury property is a breath of fresh air in a market that has its fair share of impressive 5-star hotels. It manages to perfectly blend relaxing resort vibes with contemporary style, providing a constant reminder that you’re on the ocean’s doorstep but also in close proximity to a lively city, giving travellers the best of both worlds. As with our previous stays at Rotana properties, it’s the warm welcome and hospitality of the staff that gets our attention right away. We’re happy to be greeted by a friendly and efficient member of the front desk team, proudly clad in the traditional Emirati kandora and ghutra – a sight that is rare at most hotels in the capital. He’s informative, quick and wishes us a lovely stay within minutes of walking through the hotel doors – check in couldn’t have been smoother than this. Off we go, down the hall and into our abode for the next two nights…
KEEP IT CLASSY
The Classic King Room is 40sqm of total comfort. With beautiful beige, earthy tones and wooden décor as well as intimate mood lighting, we’re in awe of the chic space which could easily resemble any cool beach house on the sandy shores of the Caribbean or Zanzibar, where breezy living is the way forward. The room is definitely unique in terms of its beachside design which is encapsulated through elements like the ceiling fan, the shutter partition screens, the open-plan bathroom with gorgeous tub and walk-in rain shower, and the artworks chosen for the walls, which just so happen to depict beachfront landscapes – all adding to the indoor-outdoor interiors in the most elegant way. There’s the spirit of being at home here and we fall into the accommodation like it’s been our residence for a long time – leaving reality at the door. Bonus: there are floor-to-ceiling glass sliding doors that lead to a balcony, so when the weather is finally pleasant enough, cooping up here with a cuppa or a good read will be one of the highlights of your stay (we did it anyway and lasted 10 minutes tops in the humidity). The room itself comes with all your usual amenities like a 49-inch flat-screen TV with satellite channels, complimentary high-speed internet, individually controlled air conditioning, IDD telephones, hairdryer, personal safety box, mini bar, tea and coffee-making facilities, and, probably the most important for us – and many travellers – there are plenty of plug sockets around to use for charging multiple devices at once – you needn’t worry if there’s two of you with a smartphone, tablet and laptop each – you’re covered (it’s all in the details!).

seven lovely dining options that promise fresh ingredients, authentic flavours and new culinary experiences, the hotel has been the talk of the town when people have searched for somewhere new to eat out. Take its Italian restaurant, Si Ristorante Italiano & Bar, for example, it’s not your run-of-the-mill venue serving up just pastas and pizzas (although it does both of these VERY well), the menu is packed with more inventive dishes that speak volumes about the thought and precision that has gone into making Si a game changer. Try the eggplant and burrata appetiser, sprinkled with chilli flakes it’s a simple yet fresh and tasty dish that had us raving about it to our foodie friends for days to follow. The messy prawns is another clear winner, with a rustic taste that washes down well with a sip of the basil blush mocktail. Salmon and herb potatoes are everything we need in a filling but lighter lunch, and we finish with a cup of green tea and lemon. Every dish is as “mmmh” inducing as the last, and the service throughout the meal is impeccable. We especially LOVED the specialised recommendations made for our gluten free preference – they’ve thought of it ALL.

There’s Turtle Bay Bar & Grill, offering a stunning rooftop bar, as well as Sim Sim where breakfast is served and more dining options to suit guests’ taste and mood. FIND YOUR ZEN
Recreation is not a difficult concept here. If the palm-tree lined stunning pool or the pristine white sand beach aren’t enough, let go of your stress at the Bodylines Fitness Club, a contemporary health and wellness hub with a fully-equipped gymnasium boasting sea views and male and female saunas. Kids are very much catered to at Aladdin’s Cave, where a lazy river, splash pool, cinema zone, water slide and much more will keep younger guests occupied throughout your stay. With two tennis courts and mini golf too, leisure and fun is at the forefront of Saadiyat Rotana Resort & Villas. That said, so is unwinding – and there’s no better place to do this than the solitude of Zen The Spa. Offering Turkish Hammam and 10 treatment rooms, get ready to fall into complete bliss when you enter the sprawling, serene space. We opted for the 90-minute Signature Massage Himalayan Pink Stone Healing which makes use of warmed Himalayan Pink Salt Stones that are made of rock crystals from salt found in the Himalayan region. These rock crystals are believed to be the purest salt to be found on earth, full of rich minerals that revitalise the body. The treatment combines the warmed Pink Himalayan Stones with a deep tissue massage, helping to remove toxins and eliminate negative energies from the body. The curative qualities in these stones are known to help reduce inflammation, stimulate circulation, calm the nervous system and restore balance of your mind, body and spirit. It’s certainly unlike any other treatment we’ve tried before – it’s a hot stone massage elevated to new heights and we especially adored the deep strokes using the stones. Tip: book a late evening appointment so you can sink into the cosy bed and fall right asleep straight after your treatment. It was great to see both families and business people at the hotel – all making the most of Rotana’s renowned facilities. With 327 rooms and suites and 13 beach villas, the choice of accommodation for any group size is abundant. To top that off, upgrade to Club Rotana executive rooms that come with added privileges and personalised service for a truly luxurious time. FEEL THE MAGIC: MINI JOHN COOPER WORKS COUNTRYMAN
fact magazine

• CITY RIDES
Described as “extremely athletic, extremely versatile” – the new John Cooper Works Countryman is definitely new territory for MINI. FACT tests the vehicle to see if it’s just another car that’s potent but pricey or if it’s really a game-changer for MINI, being the heaviest, roomiest and best-equipped car that the manufacturer has created to date.
S
tepping away from the classic MINI design of cool but compact, stylish yet affordable, the new MINI John Cooper Works Countryman is a walk (or should we say drive) in a whole new direction for the car manufacturer. The makers of this model want us to know that it’s a “natural athlete” of a car and that we can really vouch for. The car’s exterior is something to celebrate – especially when it helped us comfortably hit 140km on the highway between Dubai and Abu Dhabi on some of the windiest days – there was no shaking, or loss of steering – this hunk of steel is strong and sturdy to say the least. Immediately, you’ll find that the car’s true forte is handling. Its agility highlights the power of the MINI brand, and it’s impressive with a low centre of gravity, wide track and all the benefits of a tight, well-tuned suspension. The speed-sensitive steering provides excellent feel in the turns and at lower speeds, such as when turning onto narrow streets and manoeuvring into a parking space. Works Countryman expresses the model’s distinctive combination of extreme athleticism and exceptional versatility. It is unmistakably the biggest top athlete in the MINI family of John Cooper Works models – standing at a height of 1,557 mm and spanning a width of 1,822 mm. At first, we were unsure of MINI stepping into the realm of small SUV territory – though the John Cooper Works Countryman sits in the subcompact SUV category – but we soon changed opinion when it came around the corner boasting a bold yet modest silouhette. And let’s get one thing straight – it’s not trying to be your next offroad adventure car, but take it out for a spin between the Emirates in harsh weather conditions, or make it your choice of vehicle for running errands and going to important meetings – the MINI John Cooper Works Countryman is perfect for all of this, and then some. The typical proportions of a dynamic all-round sports car are further emphasised by model-specific features, in particular the John Cooper Works Aerodynamics Kit. Key elements of the car’s powerful appearance include the large cooling inlets in the front apron, which take up the space reserved for parking lights and fog lamps in the new MINI Countryman. The standard roof rails and the model-specific roof spoiler underscore both the height of the body and the fact that its design is geared towards optimum aerodynamic balance. The side turn indicator surrounds known as side scuttles bear a red accentuation line and the John Cooper Works logo, as does the hexagon radiator grille with characteristic honeycomb 62

pattern; the logo also appears on the tailgate. There are four non-metallic and six metallic variants to choose from for the body finish of the new MINI John Cooper Works Countryman. Here, the Chilli Red paint finish is accentuated by contrasting features in Black – a car that looks READY to perform. The second generation of the MINI Countryman is the biggest and most versatile model in the entire range of the tradition-steeped British brand. With an output of 170 kW/231 hp (combined fuel consumption: 7.4 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 169 g/km), it is the most powerful engine ever to be fitted in a MINI: in combination with the standard all-wheel drive system ALL4 and a robust vehicle concept, it ensures that the latest addition to the motoring world takes the MINI experience to a whole new level – in terms of both race track feeling on the road and extreme driving enjoyment over unsurfaced terrain (we dare you to take it all the way south and back up north just for fun – it’s an exhilarating drive). The new MINI John Cooper Works Countryman sprints from zero to 100 km/h in 6.5 seconds with both the standard 6-speed manual transmission and the optional 8-speed Steptronic sports transmission. In doing so it is 0.8 or 0.7 seconds faster than the MINI Cooper S Countryman ALL4. Its superior performance qualities are likewise reflected in its elasticity on interim sprints, cornering agility and deceleration performance. So, whether you’re planning to cruise down Sheikh Zayed Road or head into the city for shopping on the busy streets, rest-assured that this car can tackle every road and driving environment. These qualities are the product of an overall package that has been compiled based on John Cooper Works racing expertise, including not just the engine and all-wheel drive system but also a sports suspension with 18-inch John Cooper Works light alloy wheels and Brembo sports brake system, special body features to optimise aerodynamic properties and cooling air intake, and a model-specific cockpit with John Cooper Works sports seats.

The exceptional standing of the new MINI John Cooper Works Countryman within the premium compact segment is underscored by means of exclusive standard features including MINI Driving Modes, LED headlamps, Comfort Access and the Radio MINI Visual Boost. Cosmetically, the vehicle’s exterior body features highlight its jaunty credentials, as well as improving the crossover’s aerodynamic properties. The vehicle’s interior is just as pleasing. There’s a characteristic sports car atmosphere with the space and versatility of what you would expect in a full-sized SUV! In addition to John Cooper Works sports seats with integrated headrests, features such as the John Cooper Works sports steering wheel with multifunction buttons, the John Cooper Works gear or selector lever and the roof liner in anthracite, all contribute to the car’s intense feeling of racing flair. A distinctive cockpit design is combined with optimised space and a high degree of flexibility. Head, shoulder and leg room are significantly more generous than in the predecessor model, both at the front and the rear. The rear seats can be shifted longitudinally by up to 13 centimetres in a 60 : 40 split, while additional usefulness is provided by backrest elements that are tilt-adjustable and foldable. We were thrilled with just the standard features like cruise control with brake function and the Radio MINI Visual Boost including USB socket and operation via MINI Controller on the centre console, and there is a 6.5-inch screen in the central instrument that displays a start motif specific to John Cooper Works when the driver gets in the car – this means that you can personalise your driving experience, which is especially great if you’re sharing the car with family! Another great element of this vehicle is the driver assistance systems developed for the current model generation to enhance comfort and safety in the MINI John Cooper Works Countryman, too. The standard collision warning with city braking function can be extended to include the Driving Assistant system with camera-based active cruise control, pedestrian warning with initial brake function, high beam assistant and road sign detection. We can’t begin to tell you how useful this is when it’s peak
That’s one less problem to deal with on the roads! MINI has created an ideally-sized offering for drivers looking for a compact crossover with premium performance and features, well ahead of its predecessor – all whilst keeping that MINI magic that make its vehicles so popular. ✤

AMAL SHINE With the award-winning and leading voice of fashion and lifestyle in the UAE capital, Amal Salameh BRUNCH & STAY AT SHANGRI-LA ABU DHABI Raise your hand if you love a Friday brunch package that comes with an overnight stay and complimentary breakfast. In my books, the elements for an ideal staycation is award-winning food, a room with a view and a luxe ambience to make me unwind from a crazy week at work. Add a private beach and an infinity pool to the mix and I am a happy camper; and this gem of a deal is courtesy of the Shangri-La Hotel Qaryat Al Beri, Abu Dhabi. Situated on the bank of the Abu Dhabi Grand Canal and away from the bustling city’s business district and shopping malls, Shangri-La is the perfect weekend getaway for serenity with understated luxury. With its infamous Grand Mosque and beachfront views and inside its majestic arabesque lobby with marble floors and oversized chandeliers, everything is mesmerising and picture-perfect. Upon arrival, we head down their grand staircase for brunch at the award-winning Sofra Bld restaurant. Now I am not a first timer at Sofra Bld and actually, a regular as it is favored in our family during Eid and other occasions for its lavish buffet spread and opulent décor, and a very dear place as it was where we celebrated my engagement with hubby. Here is a fun fact for my non-Arabic speakers: Sofra Bld is an Arabic word, which means dining table and is a synonym for generosity and hospitality. The restaurant truly speaks for its name, as you will be surrounded by endless food stations, live cooking corners and cuisines to unleash your inner foodie. The dessert section is also a wonderland with not just one but three chocolate fountains amongst other mouthwatering sugar confectionary that would make Willy Wonka green with envy. After our delightful feast of the finest dishes from Arabia, Italy, India and Europe and declaring that I cannot fill my plate for more rounds, I was so glad that we had a room to check in to instead of trekking it back home. The highlight of our room was our private large balcony boasting the sea view ideal for a sunset panorama. With bliss, I do a quick refresh and head down to the abra boat awaiting us for a modern Arabian experience to take us to the Souk – not to be skipped and free of charge too. The following morning was spent by the gorgeous infinity pool, overlooking the iconic Grand Mosque as I soak up the sun with a book in hand and melting my worries away with a fresh coconut drink after a scrumptious brekkie. Next time you need an escape from your everyday routine, turn your brunch into an overnight stay at the Shangri-La Hotel Qaryat Al Beri, Abu Dhabi and pretend you’re on holiday in your own city!
Yours fashionably, Amal 80

PEEK-A-BU!
It’s so fitting that BU! Abu Dhabi’s Saturday afternoon offering is called the La Familia Brunch. Aptly-named, if you’re a regular at this venue, you know that every time you step through the doors at BU!, it feels like walking into your aunt’s house, where all the relatives have gathered for a feast of great magnitude. This is the very sensation the FACT team experienced on our latest visit to the Pan-Latin restaurant… fact magazine

e’ve said it before and we’ll say it again, there’s something really special about BU! Abu Dhabi; could it be its perfect blend of a sophisticated atmosphere with a social vibe or its elegant Latin American aura that emanates sensuality and style with the most tasteful touches in both its interior and what’s served up on its menu? The truth is, BU! is not just an urban eatery that also happens to dish up good food, it’s a feeling. Like coming home when school finishes for the semester and smelling the aromas of mum’s cooking – BU! remains familiar and friendly with just the right amount of excitement to keep diners coming back for more. One of the venue’s newest culinary conceptions is the belly-filling La Familia Brunch, taking place on Saturdays from 12.30pm to 4.30pm – so there’s no rush! This usually-energetic venue is quiet and sombre when we visit – some might see this as no ambience, but we like to think of it as “more for us to eat”. The La Familia Brunch is simple, a menu of modern, innovative cooking methods and all your much-loved BU! classics, beautifully-presented in the effortlessly chic and worn-in industrial surroundings. There’s also an extensive kids menu with all the little ones’ favourites, something for everyone. We began our epicurean adventure with fresh, generous helpings of guacamole and tortilla chips – in an instance, there was dipping and scooping, and “mmhs” and crunching from all around the table. If the guac is THIS good, what’s to follow must be divine, we thought. And it was. A platter of Maki rolls made its way out to the table – not hugely Latin American but all the ingredients are reminiscent of the continent’s cuisine. The standout had to be the Aguacate Roll – made up of shrimp tempura, cream cheese, avocado and teriyaki. There’s plenty to go around so take your time and relish each bite. Possibly our highlight of the whole set-up, the Ceviche Bar is a God send 84

for any avid ceviche eater. Create your own bowl of zesty flavours and be impressed with your skills. We go for a mix of the Camaron and Sea Bass then add our own garnishes, sauces and dressings for that extra oomph! Thinking of the explosive taste, our only regret is that we didn’t get up to make more. Next, plates of neatly packed Chicken Tacos and Grilled Beef Tacos grace our palates. The first is packed with more memorable flavours whilst the latter requires a plentiful squeeze of lime to add that magic taste touch. Thankfully, there are plenty of limes at the ready. It’s the intense smell and sizzling of the Anticuchos that sends our inner foodie into overdrive. One bite of the teriyaki-glazed chicken skewers and we’ve tipped over the edge – how can a sauce taste SO yummy?! There’s no skimping on the shrimp skewers either, which come with a little spicier kick. We haven’t even reached mains yet, of which there are four to choose from. By this time, we’re getting quite full and have to remind ourselves to take it easy and keep room for dessert. We opt for the Cazuela Trufada (sticky rice, shimaji, soy, truffle oil, asparagus) and the Lomo Saltado (tenderloin, lomo sauce, tomato, potato, red onion, rice). The first is an entirely vegetarian dish and a definite food awakening for anyone looking to satiate their appetite with simple, bold flavours. Of course, the meat dish is an instant win and systematically inhaled with everyone taking their fair share to clean up the plate. Dessert is the type of food display you want to show off on your insta stories. There’s lots of chocolate and pina colada love, however, it’s the mighty Churros dusted in sugar that steal the show. Gorgeously moreish and the most satisfying end to our meal. This is the thing about BU! – it’s all talk and ALL action. The type of place that follows through on what it says it will offer. Consistently reliable for efficient service, a relaxed setting and food for every liking, the La Familia Brunch is as affordable as it is delectable. We only wish that, like us, more people would take the chance to enjoy the Latin food fiesta and all-round good vibes at BU! and end their weekend the right way. ✤

hen arriving at Market Kitchen, a warmth and homeliness is evident. Market Kitchen is designed to give diners a sense of feeling like they’re at their grandma’s house and the comfort of feeling like you’re at a family dinner – and it works beautifully. The wooden flooring, warm lighting, bench-top counters and trinkets dotted around, plus a gorgeous olive tree in the middle of the room, combine to create a contemporary bistro feel. Simplicity is key here, from the logo and décor to the menus and the dishes. It’s modest in the stateliest of ways and feels cosy and intimate. There are loads of tasty options available and this restaurant will have you coming back for more due to their focus on simple but flavoursome and fresh food. From the starters, the crispy calamari is definitely one to try with its citrus chilli dip and the salmon tartare is also really impressive with a layer of creamy avocado that sits below the salmon and is surrounded by a pool of zingy soy and ginger dressing. Our favourite though is the tuna sashimi which comes on top of crispy sushi rice, scallion, and chipotle mayonnaise. It’s a very tasty bite and it’s the sort of moreish dish that you’ll keep coming back for again and again. Market Kitchen is also well known for its pizzas and before we know it, the truffle concoction with fontina cheese arrives. It’s thin, crispy, generous with the toppings and is absolutely sensational - this is a must order dish, it’s just so good with its oozing cheese and subtle truffle flavour. The other pizza to try is the beef carpaccio with shaved mushrooms, parmesan and arugula. Both pizzas are super simple but remain tasty! For the mains, we choose the Parmesan-crusted chicken and the Lobster Fettuccine. The Parmesancrusted chicken is the perfect dish with basil-lemon butter underneath the crispy chicken that is perfectly cooked and not too dry. The pasta is equally delicious with juicy lobster atop al dente fettuccine in a garlic and tomato based sauce. The sides of truffle mac and cheese, greens with parmesan and lime and enough mash and fries to feed a family are also spot on, and we are left feeling content and very full. You can’t go past dessert at Market Kitchen so we opt for the salted caramel ice cream sundae (which the restaurant is famous for) and the white chocolate pavlova. The first is an absolute knockout with a good amount of ice cream along with peanuts, popcorn and chocolate fudge sauce and stunning presentation. The pavlova is perfect with a yuzu sorbet and topped with basil to compliment the sweet flavours of the meringue. A winning meal that you should experience for yourself! ✤ 88

A JAPANESE JAUNT
Located at Abu Dhabi’s Venetian Village, Kaizen offers an upscale Japanese dining concept in a unique and interactive setting. he interactivity begins as soon as diners enter the lively space at Kaizen. A Japanese greeting is chanted by every member of the team (a faint vocal chant can also be heard from way back in the kitchen) welcoming us to the restaurant. An imposing samurai statue guards the entrance to a mid-sized venue, neatly divided into a number of dining spaces. Front and centre lies the robata grill where food is slow cooked in front of diners in a unique form of dinner theatre. Adjacent lies a small dining room with a ceiling made from hundreds of hanging glass sake bottles, and finally there’s the glass house; a conservatory-like space overlooking Abu Dhabi’s Grand Canal where the doors can be opened for al fresco dining (weather permitting). We take a seat at the robata grill in front of the humble yakikata (grill-masters). While the seating configuration may not be good for larger groups (sitting in a line is not the easiest way to partake in conversation), it proved perfect for our small party of two. Dining at Kaizen proves to be somewhat overwhelming. Not just in terms of providing an all-out assault on the senses, but also in the sheer variety of food available. Presented with the a la carte menu, a chefs specials menu, and an additional brunch menu, we struggle to make an informed selection. Eventually relying on management to recommend a number of Kaizen’s signature dishes in the hope of trying a little bit of everything. We began with mocktails which much like the staffs kimono-inspired uniforms, adopt the theme of geisha and samurai. The Sakura Blossom (lychees marinated in strawberry puree and hazelnut syrup) makes for a beguiling blend, while the Samurai Sour (green apple, lemon juice, mint) is a far more potent concoction of soured citrus, uplifted by a hint of sweet vanilla. Our favourite though, had to be the Geisha Breeze which subtly muddled together strawberry, green apple and passion fruit. With the grills heating up, we’re captivated by the yakikata as they began their robatayaki (fireside) cooking. The process involves the skewering and slow cooking of small morsels of vegetables and seafood, with little intervention and no additional seasoning, other than flaked sea salt. As each dish is prepared the staff again chant in unison, announcing the name of each dish in Japanese as they are presented to diners upon a 1.2m-long wooden paddle. This unique way of receiving your food certainly makes for a talking point and it’s pleasing to note 92

We begin with a seared salmon salad where the fish has been thinly sliced after being briefly seared and served on top of tomatoes and a selection of green leaves. The yellowtail carpaccio with its yuzu sauce and ponzu jelly offers a dish of textural complexity and bold flavours and transpires to be one of the (many) highlights of this particular meal. With the Kaizen concept revolving around small plates, as opposed to main courses, it’s advisable to order a number of dishes that cover the broad spectrum of Japanese cuisine. Our

recommendations include the giant prawn tempura featuring an addictively sweet wasabi mayonnaise and the expertly prepared sashimi platter. The trio of sashimi (sea bass, tuna and salmon) appears more thickly sliced when compared to other Japanese restaurants in the capital, allowing diners to get a real feel for the fish and their flavours. For the more adventurous palates, Kaizen’s menu features octopus tempura and dried stingray fin, with the former emanating a distinct aroma that hits you before the arrival of the plate. Is it even a Japanese restaurant if miso black cod doesn’t appear on the menu? The popularity of this particular seafood dish has ensured that black cod is a staple of seemingly every Asian menu in the Emirates. Thankfully, Kaizen’s iteration of the dish comes straight from the grill and is so delicate that we struggle to find fault! The caramelised exterior provides a hidden sweetness to this signature dish and it’s easy to see why it’s the restaurants most ordered item. Desserts are presented within an inscribed wooden box, piled with ice and surrounded by natural elements of stone, foliage and wood. Taking us on a brief journey to the mountainsides of Mount Fiji without having to leave the confines of Abu Dhabi. It’s just a little unfortunate they don’t quite live up to the savoury dishes. While the mochi is ok and somewhat unmemorable the yuzu cheesecake is far too dense and lacks the expected tartness from the yuzu fruit. A mild misstep in an otherwise impressive meal. The price point is reflective of the upscale location but for the interactivity of the dining experience and the quality of what you’re getting, we highly recommend a meal at Kaizen. ✤ fact magazine

aking care of our mind and bodies is very important and we love nothing better than relaxing with a spa treatment and some time in a wellness hub. Located at The RitzCarlton Abu Dhabi, Grand Canal, ESPA offers super soothing and relaxing treatments and carries its own ESPA range of products. I am trying the Radiance Restorer which is a deeply rejuvenating 150-minute treatment. This top-to-toe treatment combination revives skin and energy levels restoring vitality and radiance. A salt and oil body scrub smoothes skin and prepares it for the graceful, sweeping movements of the Balinese inspired massage with warm essential oils, before the radiance facial and relaxing scalp massage complete the experience. The spa offers a serene setting and is large and luxurious. The décor consists of muted sand and beige tones, high ceilings and traditional Arabic archways that give off a relaxing ambiance. This treatment came at the perfect time as my body was sore and tired and my skin was a little bit dehydrated. I’m shown to the changing rooms and slip into a plush robe and comfy slippers. I sit in the steam room and sauna for half an hour, as the therapist says this will help me to unwind before the massage and also to sweat out some of the toxins in the body. I am then shown to the serene treatment room and we start with a foot scrub while chatting about my needs for today’s treatment. The treatment starts with a full body sea salt scrub to boost circulation and to get rid of any dead skin cells. I hop into the shower to rinse it off and am left with super smooth and soft skin. The therapist then starts the Balinese Massage and I choose a

clove and lavender oil which is great for muscle pain and to detoxify sore muscles. The massage is wonderfully calming and leaves me floating on air. I’m then treated to the Radiance Facial which uses ESPA’s own brand of products. This facial works to target uneven pigmentation and skin-tone and to really breathe life back into dull skin. It also helps to refresh tired skin and to leave your complexion bright and glowing. My skin is a little on the dry side and a little bit sensitive so the therapist incorporates some soothing products into the treatment. After a calming double cleanse, the therapist goes over my skin with a special light to determine and skin issues and to idntify areas of dryness or oiliness. The skin is then steamed to open up the pores to get ready for exfoliation. Once this is done, I’m treated to an intense facial massage using hydrating oil to boost the complexion and to really get the skin prepped before the face mask. With the face mask applied, my hair is then coated in a beautiful treatment, again using ESPA’s own products and the scalp is massaged. Once both masks have done their job, serum, moisturiser and spf are then applied to the face, and the hair mask is better left on for a few hours for best results. My complexion is boosted and bright and I feel completely refreshed and both the massage and facial has worked wonders on my skin. Be sure to try the amenities which are wonderful, with a private beach and a plunge pool, both ideal for pre or post treatment relaxation. ✤
