Abu Dhabi certainly has a lot to offer over the next 31 days and we’re bringing you all the need-to-know happenings and info to pack up your social calendar, fast! With 2017 being such a monumental year for Abu Dhabi – we’re talking new hotels, some of the world’s top brands cementing themselves in the capital, and the biggest of them all - Louvre Abu Dhabi - I can’t help but think that 2018 has its work cut out to beat the past 12 months... but, this is the city of ambition, after all! Talking of the Louvre, we take a closer look at some of the collections that are coming from other world museums for Abu Dhabi visitors to admire (p46). Think history, culture and so many stories to learn about - we’re excited to explore! If you aren’t going for an Xmas brunch, an afternoon tea, a gala dinner or a full-on party this month, are you even doing life right? There’s no need to worry about making plans, because our BIG festive and NYE guide is here to take that stress away. Make yourself a cuppa, get comfy and starting from p23, have a read of all the great activities and happenings in Abu Dhabi. Pick one, send out the whatsapp group message, gather the names and BOOK your favourite today! Have you been to 99 Sushi yet? If you’re still contemplating, our resident food expert is at hand to give you the lowdown on p85. As always, food, fashion, tech and lots of Xmas inspo is waiting to be discovered - just make sure that you get plenty of time in for a festive film binge watch and eat lots of yummy gingerbread at every opportunity - I know I will #noregrets. CAFÉ CULTURE COFFEE HAS BEEN DOMINATING AS the hot beverage of choice in the middle east for some time and is showing no signs to be replaced from its top spot. Al Forsan Village Town Square has now created a destination for food and coffee enthusiasts with the opening of four different café’s; illy Café, Coffee Club, Street 9 Café and Oregano restaurant. The café industry was estimated to value around $375 million. The growth over the next five years is expected to be around 35 per cent. In a saturated F&B market, the issuance of thousands of new café licenses speaks towards the popularity of the food and beverages industry. It is not a coincidence that these new cafes and restaurants have opened up in Al Forsan Village Town Square. Mr. Rashed Al Qubaisi, General manager, Al Forsan Holding, said: “The rising food and coffee culture has well-penetrated parts of our city and is visible in our community of Al Forsan Village in Khalifa City. The presence and popularity of these restaurants in the Town Square is a standing testament to the fact,” he continued. “We are pleased to offer our food and coffee enthusiasts their daily requirements of beverages coupled with a selection of some great cuisine through these specialised avenues.” The Town Square hosts a range of upscale retail outlets as well as an exquisite collection of dining venues and pavement cafés. With its atmosphere reminiscent of a bustling Mediterranean town, it is designed to be the focal point of the Al Forsan Village community. ✤

Aspiring filmmaker Tommy Wiseau and best friend Greg Sestero try their hand at Hollywood stardom with the critically maligned film, The Room. As the movie attains its surprising cult status, it becomes very clear that there is more than one way to make it big in Hollywood. What follows is an unwavering will to succeed.
DIRECTOR: James Franco CAST: James Franco, Dave Franco, Seth Rogen, Alison Brie
WHY IT’S WORTH WATCHING?
Dubbed “The Citizen Kane of Bad Movies”, Tommy Wiseau’s The Room was quick to achieve cult status as one of the best worst movies ever made. Offering an insightful behind the scenes look at the troubled making of the film, James Franco presents Wiseau’s story with a touch of reverence and respect. Franco’s retelling of this unsuspecting cult classic is the comedic bromance biopic we never knew we needed! When best friends Tommy Wiseau (James Franco) and Greg Sestero (Dave Franco) decide to break into the movie scene with The Room back in 2003, they had no idea about the disaster-piece they were about to unleash. Increasingly fascinating viewers by being oh so bad, The Room’s surprising success effectively changed the best friends’ lives as they knew it. With James Franco’s killer acting chops as the centerpiece, the film depicts the saga of the bizarre pair of misfits, beautifully, in a heartwarming, fascinatingly hilarious underdog story.

Everyday Is Christmas
The Architect
By Sia
Your Christmas playlist just got a whole lot more festive; thanks to Sia’s first-ever holiday album! The follow-up to her 2016 album This Is Acting and her first album for Atlantic Records, Everyday Is Christmas features original holiday-themed songs composed with help from Greg Kurstin. Adding to this year’s crop of festive soundtracks, Sia aims to stand out with quirky and fun originals including Ho Ho Ho and Puppies Are Forever. Singing about the joys of Christmastime, Santa’s Coming for Us is the only Christmas jingle we need this season. Featuring sleigh bells and a jazzy guitar riff, Sia’s vocals truly shine through and lack a tinge of the usual darkness witnessed in her previous songs. Sia’s updated spin on old school songs comes as a breath of fresh air for a traditional genre like Christmas ballads. In stark contrast to the songstress’ anthemic pop hits, the new soundtrack is much more upbeat and playful and we are totally on board!
The process of having a productive conversation has certainly taken a backseat. We Need to Talk is all about bringing back to life the lost art of conversation. Headlee shares why it’s important to have effective and respectful conversations and also to listen for better relationships and growth opportunities. Lots to learn here!
By Paloma Faith Since making her mainstream debut with her theatrical image and retrosoul sound, Paloma Faith has been a permanent fixture on our playlists as well as our hearts. Steering away from the tried and tested course of love, Paloma’s fourth studio album is all about the socio-political world of our times. Showcasing a melodious marriage of the old with the new, The Architect is a social observation record from the perspective of the common people. Sticking close to the sound we’re used to, Crybaby is a super catchy and upbeat track, with more subdued and breezy vocals and vulnerable lyrics featuring a funky rhythm with a touch of disco. A dramatic and vivacious track showcasing Paloma’s deep and soulful vocals, Guilty exhibits a faultless chorus with a political edge. Delivering a mix of larger than life heartfelt ballads, The Architect has all the makings of a masterpiece.

t’s just as well we’ve got images to show you here, because it’s hard to describe perfection. Especially when you think everything has been covered, more magical surprises turn up. Anantara The Palm Dubai Resort, is your ultimate ‘out of this world’ escape. When you come to Dubai, you don’t automatically relax. There’s something about the pace of the daily grind that has you exhausted, even when you’re a spectator, so a bit of pause is essential when you live or venture to this cosmopolitan emirate. We arrived at the hotel which finds itself well into the iconic Palm, towards the end of the eastern crescent. You instantly feel perfectly secluded, despite being on a growing branch of the famous Palm, where hotels are sprouted left, right and centre. The elegant lobby sets the tone for the hotel’s public areas, with its ornate finishings and distinctly Thai touches. Check-in is met with a welcome drink – lemon grass infused, naturally – luggage is whisked off to the room, all formalities are taken care of without fuss and we’re set for three days of slow enjoyment.

WEEKEND ESCAPE •
Set amidst lush tropical landscaping and carefully designed to maximise privacy, 293 luxurious rooms and villas are characterised by Asian inspired luxury, tasteful furnishings and spectacular views of the lagoons or The Palm. The impressive choice of private villas includes Beach Pool Villas each with a personal infinity pool. Over Water Villas are poised over the Arabian Gulf with glass viewing panels, and are completely unique to the Middle East. Families and friends travelling together will find that the Two Bedroom Anantara Beach Pool Villa provides the epitome of luxury, privacy, space and style. Our room was perfectly ample in space, had everything we
needed and was a joy to spend time in. The Premier Lagoon View Room is a charming abode, surrounded by immaculately landscaped gardens and enticing lagoon pools. Spread over an area of 47 square metres, these rooms are accentuated by splendid furnishings dressed in the finest linens with large windows providing views over the surrounding lagoons and a large balcony to while away your time on. After a day on the beach or by the pool, retreat to your room for a refreshing rain shower, or a peaceful soak in the bathtub, before slipping into a dreamy night’s sleep in a plush king size or twin bed. Talking of beds, of all the hotel beds we’ve been lucky enough to get
our beauty sleep in, the bed at Anantara, was possibly the most butter-soft bed we’ve ever slept in – so much so, we called about five people to talk about how heaven-like the mattress was. No exaggeration! Lazy days can be spent enjoying the exotic pleasures of the resort’s private 400-metre beach, as well as the three winding lagoons and shoreline infinity pool which look out across the Palm. Infusing exotic elements from the beautiful country of Thailand, where Anantara is rooted, floating market style boats will glide across the lagoons (a massively fun and unique touch), serving perfectly concocted cocktails and other refreshing beverages and Thailand’s famous three-wheeler tuk-tuks will transport you around the tropical resort. But the novelty of walking will have you doing more exercise than you probably anticipated! Wellness takes pride of place at Anantara, as the hotel grounds make you feel at ease, are unobtrusive and have a calming effect – it must be the innate Thai influence. Stress slips as easily from your shoulders as a silky pashmina. Throughout our stay, we barely left the property (because we really didn’t have a reason to/didn’t want to) and we felt like we had sufficiently recharged our batteries by the end of the short (but felt twice as long) stay. Culinary experiences offer tantalising diversity for discerning palates. Crescendo, the all-day dining restaurant, serves a variety of international cuisine. You’ll definitely have a breakfast of champions there – pastries, noodles, sushi, gluten free bread, omelettes anyway you want, everything. It’s also a very big space so you never feel like you are squashed in. fact magazine

Dubai’s skyscrapers provide a twinkling backdrop to outdoor-seated diners. And of course, there’s the Asian themed specialty restaurant, Mekong, which takes you on a mouth-watering journey to complete your Thai experience. The Beach House expresses the rich simplicity of Mediterranean flavours in a breezy shoreline setting. Lotus Lounge, in the lobby, serves afternoon tea by day and cocktails at sunset. Mai Bar refreshes guests with an enticing beverage and snack menu in shady poolside bliss and at the swim-up bar. For the ultimate in tailored romance, Anantara’s signature Dining by Design concept includes a choice of fine-dining menus and intimate settings, a private chef and flawless service. And when you want to TRULY escape, book yourself into Anantara Spa. Melt into massages inspired by the heartfelt generosity of Bedouin desert culture. Replenishing scrubs and wraps reflect the life-giving qualities of Arabia’s date palm gardens. The Arabian Gulf’s seawater pearls offer illuminating beauty with radiant facials, while dynamic body treatments are cultivated from advanced western techniques to contour and redefine the silhouette. Rejuvenate with the spa’s holistic cocoon room and Ayurveda room or indulge in a private hammam experience – the choice is all yours! What we loved best was how, when sauntering around the leafy grounds, we literally felt like we were amongst temples. The architecture is such that you are transported to a zen-like space where you have uninterrupted views of the grounds and there’s no element of where you are – just pure bliss. ✤

T
he Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge has long been acknowledged as the leading international circuit for classic and vintage sailing yachts. Celebrating its 13th outing in 2017, the circuit spans 10 of the world’s most fascinating and maritime tradition-rich regattas on a calendar that has become a reference point for lovers of the stunning beauty, glorious history and absolute uniqueness of all classic craft. At the Tuscan round, it was the yachts Moonbeam of Fife (1903, Big Boats), Linnet (1905, Vintage Yachts), Ganbare (1973, Classic Yachts) and Raindrop (2014, Spirit of Tradition) that emerged as winners of the Panerai watches. In all, 47 boats from 10 different nations competed in the second Mediterranean stage of the Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge, which is being sponsored for the 13th consecutive year by the luxury sports watch-maker, Officine Panerai. For the first time in the event’s history, however, the fleet competed in four rather than the usual three races. The formidable racing arena in the Golfo di Talamone featured courses of between 15 and 20 miles in length. All of the races were successfully run thanks to good weather and sea conditions. Moonbeam of Fife, built by the legendary Fife yard of Scotland, won the Big Boats category in all four races, outdoing her Fife siblings, Hallowe’en (1926) and Cambria (1928), in the standings. The 25-metre gaff cutter, also known as Moonbeam III, has competed in all the leading classic sailing events of the last 20 years since undergoing major restoration work in England in 1998. Linnet swept the boards in the Vintage Yachts at Porto Santo Stefano. Luna Rossa boss and former America’s Cup challenger Patrizio Bertelli’s 13.2-metre gaff sloop is a New York Yacht Club 30, a one-design of which just 18 examples were ever built. Linnet beat all comers in her category, including illustrious racers of the likes of Spartan (1913) and Chinook (1916). All three yachts were launched by the Herreshoff yard of Bristol, which produced hundreds of boat designs that contributed to some of the most glorious pages in racing history. With three victories and a second position in her class, Ganbare, the 1973 One Tonner that secured Doug Peterson a place amongst the great designers, dominated the Classic Yachts standings. The 10.49-metre will, of course, be attempting to repeat the season victory she delivered in her class on the 2016 Panerai circuit. Her closest rival at Argentario was Ardi (1968) aboard which Italian sailing hero, Admiral Agostino Straulino, used to compete. As happened in 2016, the little gaff sloop Raindrop
won the Spirit of Tradition class, ahead of another Wianno, Wind & Wine, and Tabasco 5 (1981). Other notable victors in the sub-categories into which the Argentario Sailing Week fleet was divided included Rowdy (1916) in the Vintage Marconi A, the same category in which Officine Panerai’s 1936 ketch, Eilean, was competing, Skylark of 1937 in the Vintage Marconi B and Naïf (1973) in the Classic A. That fact that the placings were spread so widely between the various boats in the first round at Antibes in France and Porto Santo Stefano in Tuscany leaves the battle for end- of-season honours wide open in all the various categories of the 2017 Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge. As per tradition, the Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge rounds in France (Antibes, Cannes), Italy (Argentario) and Spain (Mahon on the island of Minorca) comprise the Mediterranean Circuit. The yachts participating in each of the events on the Circuit build up points which go towards winning the overall Trophy. In the run-up to the next round on the Mediterranean Circuit, at Mahon in Spain between August 29 and September 2, the next Panerai-sponsored event is set to take place at Cowes on ht Isle of Wight in England. The Cowes Panerai British Classic Week is a stand-alone regatta staged in one of the most iconic venues in international sailing history. ✤

99 Problems and Sushi Ain’t One 99 Sushi Bar is the latest dining destination to open at Abu Dhabi’s upmarket Galleria Mall, in a year when we’ve already been spoiled with the likes of Coya, Eat Greek, Loca and La Petite Maison. ailing from Spain, 99 Sushi has five branches in Madrid and one in Barcelona, with the popular sushi spot choosing Al Maryah Island for its first international location. Locating 99 Sushi is a little problematic due to a distinct lack of signage, but upon finding your way to the mezzanine level wedged between The Galleria and the Four Seasons Hotel, the reward is obvious. Waterfalls slide effortlessly down a golden glass facade, seductively inviting diners to discover what’s inside. Gold is most definitely on the agenda, like the palace of the mythological King Midas, embossed gold can be found everywhere – the walls, the menus, the uniforms and even the chopstick holders. This all-gold theme works surprisingly well, staying on the right side of gaudy and complemented by blown-glass and mirrored walls - 99 Sushi makes for one of the most appealing dining rooms in Abu Dhabi. Much of this appeal is drawn from the restaurant’s size which is limited to around 80 covers, inclusive of the covered deck offering waterside views and a small private dining room. For an establishment that’s less than a couple of months old, the experience is truly impressive. It’s rare to see a team so well-versed in the menu and fully prepared to receive guests. The menu is a collection of Japanese favourites with a specific focus on sushi. We begin with the Tuna Tataki, presenting thin slices of impeccable tuna from the small interactive sushi bar, lightly seared on the outside and drizzled with a soy sauce reduction, coriander and passion fruit. It’s a bold introduction to the world of 99 Sushi, creating a burst of flavour to the palate that resonates with us long after the meal is over. The quality of the seasonal ingredients is evident in each of the intricately constructed dishes that materialised from the kitchen and the use of natural slate as place mats brings an earthy feel to proceedings, as if taking diners back

to nature and the singular elements of each dish. The signature Tiger Prawn Tempura is 99 Sushi’s take on the everpopular dynamite shrimp and offers a plentiful portion of lightly battered prawns in a kimchi sauce. The success of this dish lies in the fact that it’s not slathered in sauce, allowing the prawns to retain a delicate crispiness, though we would’ve appreciated a little more heat from the kimchi. The Matsuri Maki Roll is an interesting choice that literally comes to life at the table. For the maki come topped with tuna flakes that react to the heat of a jalapeno sauce that is poured into the rolls. With the flakes dancing hypnotically like some kind of insectoid, it’s a dish that is likely to impress. Also of interest is the Grilled Foie Sushi, served with raspberry and tare (thick sweet dipping sauce) it’s an ambitious creation

that was perhaps a little too dense and rich for our liking. Aside from the sushi, there are a couple of main course options involving Wagyu in various forms (carpaccio, ribeye and short rib), corn-fed chicken and a selection of fish. We select the 99 Cod, 99 Sushi’s take on the Japanese black cod which has become an obligatory inclusion on Japanese menus in the UAE. Here, the cod is sweet and succulent having been cooked in the oven and finished under the salamander grill, and at AED199 it’s cheaper than any of its competitors in the capital. As a new concept for Abu Dhabi, 99 Sushi makes a bold impression and an integral addition to the dining options on Al Maryah Island, perfectly slotting into the high-end niche of the island. It’s a venue that secretes a luxury feel from the very fabric of the building, to the amber-lit bar through to the elegant lounge. With a no entertainer and no brunch policy, it will be very interesting to see how diners in the capital take to 99 Sushi, but for us, it’s definitely worth another visit. ✤

illed as the Village Brunch this casual Friday affair offers a buffet of international cuisine that draws inspiration from some of the Le Méridien’s favourite food and beverage outlets collectively known as the village. Set against a soundtrack of mellow pop music performed by a live duo, the backdrop for this particular Friday brunch is the colourful decor of Latest Recipe, a space bathed in natural light which offers a good mix of seating configurations. The restaurant may be large but the buffet is not. Unable to compete with some of Abu Dhabi’s bigger brunches, the team at Le Méridien have tactfully scaled back the offering under the guise of quality over quantity. We begin at the central bar, back-lit in hues of amber and offering a tantalising selection of cocktails, from 88

gin mixed with botanicals, to flavoured mojitos and the classic cosmopolitan. It’s a good start to the weekend and drinks are mixed extremely well without compromising on the flavours of the blended concoctions. Over on the buffet there’s a make-your-ownsalad station and a generous selection of seafood piled high upon glistening ice shards. Keeping with the seafood theme, guests are invited to try freshly-shucked oysters with a dash of tabasco or a spritz of lemon, before proceeding to the sushi. The hot buffet is where you can travel the globe and enjoy Italian pizzas and pastas, alongside a traditional British beef roast, and an ample selection of Arabic delights and cold mezze. It’s a crowd-pleasing selection of dishes, though at times it feels the flavours could be a little punchier. Trinkets from the Indian subcontinent are scattered throughout the Asian station

and the large copper pots are home to the curries and naan breads, which are replenished fresh from the tandoor oven. For us, the highlights of the brunch included the mushroom pasta which was extremely creamy without being overly heavy and the seafood paella packed full of mussels, shrimp and sliced calamari. Desserts run the gauntlet of the usual brunch favourites and include a moist red velvet cake, a fragrant Umm Ali and a number of decadent chocolate items. With Le Méridien being one of the oldest hotels in Abu Dhabi the brunch feels as though it could do with some minor updating too, but for now, it’s a good all-rounder and very ideal for families, catering well for small children. Service throughout remains prompt and friendly and although it appears the main clientele is made up of in-house guests, Latest Recipe proves to be a worthy choice for those in search of a more relaxed brunching experience. Boasting an outside terrace that’s perfect for the current cooler climate, the Friday Village Brunch should be given some serious consideration for your next al fresco dining spot with the family, especially considering its super pocketfriendly price of AED149 net per person. Value for money is excellent, especially for the choice of food and drinks available! ✤

here’s simply nothing better than expert Italian cuisine with knowledgeable staff and striking views. These are the key things you will notice upon entering Café Milano. This gorgeous Italian eatery, located below the lobby of the upscale Four Seasons Hotel Abu Dhabi at Al Maryah Island, offers a superb menu with the most breathtaking views across the glittering waters. The concept hails from Washington DC, opened by Franco Nuschese, and Abu Dhabi boasts its only other world venue. The décor is beautiful with lots of black, white and cream touches and everything you’d expect of a fine-dining restaurant including crisp white tablecloths and dapper staff. Most of them are Italian which is a nice surrpise and their friendly welcome makes us feel right at home. The staff are happy to offer suggestions from the menu which is a vast mix of everything from antipasto, to pasta and risotto, fish and meat. To start with, we decide on the Burrata and the Octopus Salad. Both dishes impress us with freshness and flavour, and it’s the perfect start to an excellent meal. The Burrata is imported from Puglia and is soft and creamy served up with crostini, cherry tomato confit and grilled vegetables - definitely one of the best burrata dishes we’ve tried. The octopus is beautifully roasted with potatoes, olives and tasty cherry tomatoes. Other dishes to try are the Tuscan onion soup and the terrine of Foie Gras – super Italian and incredibly palate-pleasing. For the mains there are so many mouth-watering options. The Arugula and Bresaola Pizza looks amazing as does the Breaded Veal Chops and the 92

t’s a rare occurrence to not be on our phone and anxiety kicks in as soon as your phone data or wifi drops out. This is where ESPA’s brand re-launch comes in. The well-known spa brand has introduced two new treatments designed to unwind a busy mind, escape the pace of everyday life and emerge feeling focused, with a sense of renewed positivity. Located at The Ritz-Carlton Abu Dhabi, Grand Canal, this gorgeous spa offers super soothing and relaxing treatments. The spa has a serene setting and is large and luxurious. The décor consists of muted sand and beige tones, high ceilings and traditional Arabic archways that give off a peaceful ambience. I’ll be trying the ESPA Mindful Massage which encourages deep relaxation and the art of being present in the moment. I change into a plush robe and comfy slippers, opting for half an hour in the steam room and sauna as my therapist says this will help to completely unwind before the massage and also to sweat out some of the toxins in the body. A gorgeous treatment room awaits and we start with the massage. When asked how I’m currently feeling, fact magazine

both emotionally and physically, I talk through areas that need special attention. This massage isn’t designed to be super strong like a deep tissue but more like an invigorating yet tranquil treatment. It’s a holistic and clarifying experience that works on the concept of mindfulness, focusing on both mind and body to help you reduce stress and ‘be more in the present’. The therapist firstly guides me through deep breathing and visualisation techniques to help relax the mind and release physical or emotional anxieties. I’m also asked to think of a colour and then to deeply breathe this colour in and out. The colour relates to your chakras and aura (so if you think of blue this is meant to mean you are having issues with your thyroid). The metamorphic zones on the feet are then massaged to help rebalance and ground you, before a soothing, deeply therapeutic massage is continued up through the body to promote positivity to the mind, finishing with a reenergising scalp massage using warm rose quartz crystals. This is a truly soothing massage perfect for anyone who is feeling stressed or tense. I leave feeling relaxed but energised. There is also a Mindful Facial that aims to rejuvenate your skin with naturally advanced formulas to cleanse, hydrate and calm your complexion and busy mind. The facial uses the same breathing and visualisation techniques as the massage with lifting strokes and warmed poultices to sculpt and tone the facial contours whilst nourishing the skin. I suitably impressed with the new range of treatments and would highly recommend them to anyone in need of some serious downtime. The amenities are also wonderful, with a private beach and a plunge pool, both perfect for pre or post treatment chilling out. ✤
