ow did this happen? Is it me or is time escaping us like it literally doesn’t exist? December 2019 is geared up to be packed with all kinds of lovely treats, but before you rush onto the next one, pause for a second and think about all the things you’ve been able to achieve and experience this year. If, like me, the year seems to be a blur, just scroll through the photo gallery on your phone (or instagram profile – guilty!) and remind yourself of all the amazing memories you’ve made. At FACT, it’s been a rollercoaster with awards seasons, lots of cool trips and events, and another successful year of publishing. This month is, hands down, the most lively and special in Abu Dhabi. We’ll be getting into the celebratory mood with many of you this holiday season. When I’m not in the office or at home playing all the Christmas songs on YouTube, you can find me at one of the many festive happenings around the city. Turn to p25 and start your merry journey with our pick of the ultimate Christmas Eve and Christmas Day gatherings that are worth looking into for your celebrations. Following on from this, you’ll find a list of our favourite NYE Hotspots (p42) in Abu Dhabi and what they’re all offering for the eve of December 31. Choose one, send out the whatsapp group message and BOOK your table, fast! We will begin December with a week-long break to mark the 48th UAE National Day alongside the talk of the town and possibly the most-anticipated event on the annual calendar - the Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix 2019. After parties galore, we'll help you unwind with a comforting dose of food, fashion, tech and lots of festive inspo waiting to be discovered throughout the issue - just make sure that you get plenty of time in for some carolling and gingerbread-making at every opportunity - I know I will - #noregrets. For me, family, food and travel were once again at the forefront of my 2019, and they’re all things that will continue into the next year! In fact, a new bucket list is due, so as I sit down with Lonely Planet at my disposal, 2020 doesn’t seem that scary after all! If the UAE’s entertainment calendar has anything to do with it, we’re looking at another incredible year ahead *coughs* Lauryn Hill… Dubai Jazz Festival, anyone?. The One Bedroom Suite is the stuff of hotelier dreams. Much like the other rooms, it embraces an organic theme, boasting a range of rich textures, employing the use of marble, walnut wood panelling and bamboo flower inspired soft furnishings. Accommodation in Abu Dhabi is second to none with guestrooms that provide in-room business facilities and high-speed Internet service, in addition to wellappointed bathrooms – this is no exception at Fairmont Bab Al Bahr. We love how much light comes in through the windows – excellent for anyone who wants to get a little work in during their stay. The views are quite, simply, UNREAL. You will reside overlooking the beach, the canal and the Grand Mosque in the distance – make sure to capture the sunsets (although a photo doesn’t do the real thing justice). One Bedroom Suites are elegantly appointed with a separate living space including sofas and a coffee table. Your welcome amenities will have you sprawled on the sofa with chocolates in hand and a cup of tea or coffee to sip on – it’s one of the most comfortable set ups we’ve ever experienced. There are two LCD televisions, a work desk, wardrobe space that causes serious envy – we wouldn’t mind having this arrangement in our own homes - and a luxurious five-piece bathroom that is designed through open-plan living. It’s definitely a romantic space that would make the ideal staycation booking for anniversaries, birthdays and occasions where you want to spoil someone special. There are enough sockets and ports around the room as well as two ring-light style mirrors which will have every makeup lover jumping with joy. However, as they say – the small things make a difference. Here, we found luxury bathroom amenities by Le Labo personalised with our name on the bottles, alongside rose petals on the bed and in the tub. Talk about a warm welcome – the Fairmont team absolutely nailed first impressions. 56

If you’re not tempted by the interiors, then you’ll certainly be hard pressed to argue with the menu – it’s fantastic. The ultra-modern concept exudes passion for Japanese cuisine, serving up a wide selection of sushi, salads and main course options. Adding to the menu, some special dishes include Black Cod Fish, Miso Marinade, and Sashimi Bowl. Those who would like to have a quick and healthy lunch may opt for a belt-style conveyor offering the variety of fresh and casual Japanese dishes. The Crispy Dynamite Shrimp, Prawn and Black Cod Dumplings and Faurmont Kappa Maki (asparagus, cucumber and avocado) were some of the highlights for us. Both the Grilled Sea Bass and Miso Marinated Hoba Black Cod are real crowd-pleasers. Packed with unique flavours and a freshness that is unreplaceable (and appreciated) – the whole dining experience at Café Sushi is a palate

awakening. For dessert, the Soft Japanese Cheesecake will hit the spot, whilst the service and friendliness throughout will leave you lingering at the restaurant for more.

LEISURE TIME

This is a hotel where boredom is not a word. An outdoor, Olympic length swimming pool with dedicated family and children areas, jacuzzi and a pristine beach offer a refreshing pace of life. Topping up the tan on a sandy beach is one of the best feelings and the health club is absolutely incredible – with a variety of equipment to suit any taste. All XT4 models are driven by an all-new Cadillac 2.0L Turbo engine, producing an SAE-certified output of 237 hp (177 kW). Coupled with a ninespeed automatic transmission with next-generation Electronic Precision Shift, the new engine features new efficiency-enhancing technologies including Active Fuel Management (cylinder deactivation). We drove a fair few times between Abu Dhabi and Dubai and were thoroughly impressed by the fuel efficiency – this is a car made with pocket-friendly spending in mind. The XT4 also sees the debut of Cadillac’s new global “Y” trim strategy, with specific content and styling cues featured on distinctive Premium Luxury and Sport trims, tailored to different customer tastes and preferences. XT4 Sport models feature a gloss black mesh grille inspired by Cadillac’s high-performance V-Series models, gloss black window moldings and specific Sport alloy wheel choices. Cadillac will roll out this new trim strategy beginning with the XT4 and the 2019 CT6 top-of-range sedan. XT4 Sport’s available Active Sport Suspension features Continuous Damping Control and takes driving dynamics and control to a higher threshold, using electronic sensors to monitor the road in real time and making damping adjustments every two milliseconds. The XT4 is also the first Cadillac to introduce electro-hydraulic braking assist, which supplants the traditional vacuum-assisted power braking system with an electro-hydraulic system that enhances fuel economy and takes up less space under the hood. AMAL SHINE With the award-winning and leading voice of fashion and lifestyle in the UAE capital, Amal Salameh HEALING SOUND THERAPY AT THE EDITION SPA, ABU DHABI Trending among millennials and probably spotted in at least once while skimming through your Instagram story feed, healing sound therapy is all the rage right now which peaked my interest (and never ending) curiosity to investigate what the hype is all about on this revolutionary route to mindfulness. Sound healing sessions can be practiced amongst a group of people, but my personal preference was a private session which led me to book a one on one sound therapy afternoon at the award-winning EDITION spa in Abu Dhabi. So, what is sound therapy and the claims around it? It is hard to cut through the noise of sound healing right now since science hasn’t quiet caught up with people’s hopes, but it alleges to aid with anxiety and insomnia and the beauty of these treatments is that they are not invasive and typically not expensive. Upon arrival to the spa, I had their welcome ritual called the Himalayan Sound Therapy which consisted of me standing on a ginormous bowl that omits vibrations aimed to cleanse the guest’s aura before any treatment of their choice at the EDITION spa. Then my lovely therapist Juny went on to ask which colour is on my mind right now and I responded with purple which she then explained is an emotion colour that restores balance for instant wellness. I guess at this point my chakras were feeling the vibes in this spa already. Now to the treatment – the healing sound therapy consisted of different sized Tibetan metal sound bowls used on various areas of the body that produce different tones of frequencies and vibrations to balance the mind, body and soul which I was skeptical about, but I insisted to keep an open mind from start to finish. I am happy to report that it was indeed a delightful session that transported me using sound only to a relaxing state of mind and gave me an energy boost once it was all over. Would I book this more often? Definitely! I personally felt it was a meditation session that made me pause everything else that is going on in life and just connect with myself on a deeper level, which needs to be done more often given that we all lead a busy lifestyle that needs a tranquil timeout session now and again.

Leading up to the entrance, a clash of colours set the street vibes with graffiti wrapped around the walls, welcoming you to a restaurant that brings together the delicate flavours of the Italian Amalfi coast, paired with the robust, familiar tastes of New York City. istrict by Amalfi’s brandnew menu has enticed us into visiting the restaurant for lunch on a warm Wednesday afternoon; we choose the rather cushy sofa-style seating where taking naps in between courses should definitely be allowed – it’s SO comfy! The menu is a one-page delight with a vigorous number of choices from antipasti to small bites and salads, pasta, pizza, soup and boards, mains and even a mozzarella bar. House Signatures are highlighted throughout, so anyone who wants to explore a little within their palate’s comfort zone knows exactly what the holy grail dishes are that keep diners coming back to District by Amalfi. The menu overhaul is an exciting one. The culinary team aims to showcase the tastes of Little Italy on the Upper East Side. The venue certainly carries the essence of this famous Lower Manhattan neighbourhood, and we were eager to see if the food followed suit. It’s imperative to mention, the menu boasts quite a fair number of dishes that cater to vegetarian and pescatarian diners too. We begin with Grilled Prawns Alla Diavola, a genius concoction of juicy jumbo prawns bathed in a sauce of lemon, chilli and garlic – some of the most poignant ingredients in Italian cooking. If you can handle your spice, request for the chef to turn the heat up and prepare the dish with some fiery flavours – really well worth it. Cheese lovers will be in their element – as we were. The new D.B.A Mozzarella Bar features everything from creamy stracciatella to a delicious caprese salad, but it was the Burrata that caught our attention. Sitting atop two pieces of sourdough bread, the burrata is accompanied by smashed avocado, sundried tomato, chilli and balsamic glaze. It’s a clever take on the breakfast favourite of scrambled egg and smashed avo – but here, the burrata is the talking point in all its creamy, tasty glory. A dish that we would easily order again! The Grilled Octopus with potatoes, celery, herb salad and mustard crumbs is a surprise to say the least. Octopus is delightful when it is cooked properly, but it can be devilish to cook, going from 84

tender to rubbery as it sits in the pot. Here, it makes the cut. The meat is tenderised and tasty, especially with the potatoes as an addition. The Pumpkin and Ricotta Open Lasagne is our dish of the day. Turning the notion of a traditional lasagne upside down – or inside out – an earthy mixture of Pumpkin, Sage and Parmigiana Reggiano sit neatly in between sheets of lasagne to be devoured by the mouthful. This is a great alternative to your usual order of arrabiata or risotto, especially if you’re looking to try something new. Another excellent vegetarian option is the Saffron Risotto with Wild Mushrooms, Herbs and Parmigiana Reggiano. It has all the familiar markings of flavours that you will recognise and adore but with even more depth than you can imagine. A truly delicious choice. If you’re visiting District by Amalfi for their fresh woodfired pizzas, you won’t be disappointed. The Pepperoni is a classic that pleases time and again. We applaud the consistency of how this pizza draws all the mmmhs and aaahs around the table, every single time. However, it is the Wagyu pizza that steals the show. Oh. Em. Gee. If you’re a meat eater, this pizza is going to change your life. For the better. Topped with marinated beef brisket, caramelised onion and béarnaise sauce, one bite is all it takes to get addicted. The meat is beautifully tender, highlighting the simple yet delectable flavours. If you order only one thing on the menu, make sure it’s this. It’ll be tough to do but saving room for dessert will turn out to be a great idea. Finish with a selection of new desserts that are oh-so delish! Be ready to tackle Italian American favourites whenever the craving hits, featuring Chocolate Tartufino, Nana’s Tiramisu,

Brulee Cheese Cake, Coffee Pana Cotta or Baba Au Strawberry soufflé. We must say that the tiramisu is as good as our taste buds could have imagined – flying the flag high for an all-time Italian classic. District by Amalfi is an unpretentious dining destination. he latest offering at Novotel Al Bustan is Waves, an appealing poolside spot located on the first floor of the hotel that offers sweeping city views from the appealing terrace. The multifaceted venue is an extension of the hotel's fitness centre and swimming pool area and works as a relaxed spot for a poolside lunch or a post-workout snack. As the sun sets though, things begin to change rather dramatically and the ambience in the venue changes with the arrival of night. Exposed filament light bulbs are strung between wooden cabanas replete with plump cushions that make for a comfortable spot to enjoy a sundowner or two, while the glass facade of the hotel rises above like a glistening waterfall. With the arrival of winter and al fresco dining season, it’s the terrace with its outdoor bar and bean bag seating that is likely to offer the most appeal at Waves. Inside there is a pleasant bar area where guests are invited to perch on one of the high stools and enjoy one of the many expertly mixed drinks while listening to the chilled-out tunes of the resident DJ who plays six nights a week. Settling into one of the cabanas, we’re surprised by the versatility of the menu that manages to bridge the gap between pub grub and comfort food with ease. A sturdy one-page menu is broken down into several sections that include classics, on bread and holy smokes. Upon the chef's recommendation, we begin with the tuna avocado tartare (AED48) which is generously portioned and presented upon a sleek black slate embedded within a wooden board. The attention to detail in the presentation is matched in flavour with the cool cubes of raw tuna complemented by slithers of avocado and a powerful hit of lemon. Similarly, the shrimp toast (AED45) arrives piled high with pieces of shellfish and the resulting dish is undeniably moreish. Waves' mac and cheese balls (AED36) are perhaps the venues 'must order' dish, with the cheese-laden pasta deep-fried until golden and served with a strong blue cheese dip. The food at Waves has been designed with sharing in mind and we’d suggest ordering a selection of dishes to share, meaning you can experience much more of the menu. The towering nachos platter (AED40) is a mammoth dish with a literal mountain of tortilla chips piled high with tomato salsa, green chilli, sour cream, guacamole, shredded parmesan and Cheddar cheese - this dish is more than enough for four people to share. Marked as ‘Waves Faves’ the signature dishes of the restaurant are a collection of Asian-inspired steamed baos that can be ordered in a variety of flavours. The large pillow-like buns are served in pairs and it was the crispy duck that had our heart. Served with pipettes of hoisin sauce that can be squeezed onto the brittle and flavoursome shards of duck meat, the interactivity of the dining experience brings an element of fun. When it comes to the bao’s, accessories are provided in the form of black gloves, to ensure that diners don’t get messy when devouring the succulent. These also come in handy with the pulled beef bao which has an unexpected spicy kick! Presentation is integral to the dining experience at Waves and helps to bring a unique visual appeal to the dishes prepared 88

by the kitchen. From thick quesadillas adorned with slices of chilli, through to a trio of coloured sliders accompanied by fries served inside a miniature shopping trolley, the food is elevated beyond poolside fare. The beverages are also not to be overlooked and the varied range of mocktails and cocktails are bound to please. Like the food, all beverages are very reasonably priced. From the ‘drivers choice’ of mocktails, the going coco not loco (AED42) offers berry-infused coconut water served within a coconut emblazoned with the Waves logo. As a venue, Waves has so much to offer from a chilled poolside vibe through to DJ-led nights with plenty of space for dancing and frivolity. Waves provides guests with a casual environment to relax and have fun and the newly expanded terrace is a delight. Much like the name suggests, this spot is bound to make Waves with residents and visitors alike. Go check it out. ✤

MEXICAN FEASTIN'

Amerigos Mexican Bar and Restaurant at Park Inn by Radisson Abu Dhabi has long been a favourite spot for residents and tourists to feast on Mexican cuisine. FACT’s David Tapley visits the colourful Latin American restaurant to sample its comfort food and casual dining environment. fact magazine

ccessible from the hotel lobby, the only Mexican restaurant in the Yas Island area is deceptively large and encompasses a dining room, an informal bar and a spacious al fresco terrace where guests are invited to dine on the finest tacos, quesadillas and ceviche. Overlooking the landscaped swimming pool with its vibrant illuminations and palm-fringed gardens, sitting outside you could easily mistake the location for Cancún rather than Abu Dhabi. The popular venue which has recently undergone a revamp has returned from the summer months with an exciting new look. Bold walls printed in vibrant reds and yellows are reflected in the leather upholstery, while colourful prints of Mexican painter Frida Kahlo hang proudly in pride of place at essential junctures throughout the dining room. The fun and playful vibe that Amerigos has established over the years remains in place and is enhanced by decorative touches such as sombreros and blackboards and a neon sign that reads “feed me tacos and tell me I’m pretty.” It’s all rather Instagrammable and even on a Sunday night, the venue is near to capacity. When it comes to drinks, Amerigos offers a pleasing variety of hops, grapes and mixed beverage. Many of which are as frivolous as the surroundings, incorporating marshmallows and chilli into the mix. The food menu has also been updated to complement the venues new look and is vastly improved from the restaurant's previous offering. Whether it’s authentic Mexican dishes or something more along the lines of Tex-Mex - call it nachos versus ceviche if you will - the culinary team at Amerigos have you covered. We kick things off with guacamole which is prepared tableside with avocado, tomato, onion, coriander and lime. The theatrics are undeniable and the resulting dip is smooth while providing a slight heat and a charming zestiness from the lime. Dishes have been designed with sharing in mind so we’d suggest ordering a selection of plates and the team are more than happy to assist with recommendations and highlights. We end up with a fresh and almost tropical salmon ceviche that has been beautifully citrus-cured alongside mango pieces, capers and a crunchy corn tostada for texture. The pollo quesadilla is also impressive thanks to a more than generous filling of chicken, caramelised onions, cheese and pico de gallo, all sandwiched within a flour tortilla. There is so much filling in fact, that much of it ends up escaping out onto the plate. The team seem aware though and we’re provided with Amerigos branded bibs to ensure no spillage upon our garms. It wouldn’t be Mexican without tacos and eight varieties available! These range from the vegetarian Jamaica with its plantain and hibiscus flower filling, through to our personal favourite the Carne - a trio of softshell tacos stuffed with skirt steak, salsa and onions. The menu offers more than just enchiladas and tacos though,

with main courses such as carne asada, barbacoa and ribeye offering appealing options for meat lovers. We delve into a medium-rare ribeye presented to the table upon a hot plate that allows the meat to cook for longer (if required). The resulting piece of meat is both tender and flavoursome and there is no need for the accompanying sauces, as the char and seasoning upon the meat is enough. Another recommendation, the seafood paella is spicier than its Spanish counterpart and comes piled high with mussels, calamari rings and plump shrimp. The portion is also enough for three or four to share. Desserts offer the usual suspects and while we found the tres leches to be lacking due to a firmer texture than we would’ve perhaps liked, the churros are a real winner. Crisp on the outside and gloriously fluffy within, the warm dough is sprinkled with sugar and perfectly complement the dark chocolate dipping sauce. Marking a memorable end to the meal. As has always been the case at Amerigos, the team are friendly and energetic, remembering us from previous visits and remaining attentive despite a sudden influx of customers throughout the night. With its new menu, new look, lively soundtrack and sports showing on the big screens, Amerigos offers something for everyone and in doing so has cemented its reputation as one of the top spots for Mexican cuisine in the capital. ✤

hen I first arrive at Twiink Studio, we tour the lovely venue and it honestly feels like I’m in one of the world’s leading beauty capitals: London, New York, Seoul or L.A., in fact, I’m surprised (and secretly pleased) that Twiink Studio chose the UAE capital to open its first venue – because this place would fit in so well just up the road in Dubai. The brand-new specialist space is the meeting of floral interiors and ethereal dreams. From the moment you step inside the pretty pink door, you will feel thoroughly relaxed and transported to an oasis of calm and sophistication with memorable touches and the classiest of décor and design. A lounge area is adorned with elegant teal sofa chairs, freshly-infused flavoured water to hydrate you before your treatment, towels and cute little frames, flowers and books. Turn the corner and get ready for the biggest surprise of all; a floor-to-ceiling passage of lights reminiscent of Japan’s Wisteria Flower Tunnel, only here it’s made of fairy lights and mirrors – the most instaworthy spot at the studio to take a picture. The attention to detail is second to none. We continue through a curtain to a line of very comfy posturepedic beds. Each has privacy partitions and little nooks to store your belongings. I’m comfortably lying down and ready for Miko Su, the owner of Twiink Studio, to start the process of revamping my lashes. For those who may not be familiar with lash treatments, Twiink Studio offers a range of different 96

brow and lash enhancements. From Yumi Lash Lifts – a keratin treatment that helps to lift and curl your natural lashes – to eyelash tinting, extensions, and refills alongside brow services for shaping, lifting, and tinting too. What sets Twiink Studio apart from other places is their bespoke service and approach to each treatment. The aim here is to create a customised lash look to suit every individual. They don’t count lashes or apply a fixed number of lashes. Instead, they examine every face for its uniqueness and simply apply as many lashes as required to achieve the desired result for each client. You can discuss everything including lash type, thickness, and curl shape to determine your ideal option to suit your eyes. As this is my very first experience with lash extensions, I was aiming for something very natural and long-lasting. An effortlesslooking curl and lift is what I hoped for. I opted for the Classic Set and fell into a sweet slumber as Miko Su geared up to transform my lashes. An hour – and a restful nap – later, I rise to find a beautiful vibrant fan of lashes draping my eyes and making me look more alert and livelier than when I first walked in. Next up was an Eyebrow Shaping and Tinting experience with Lena at the very cool makeup bar. Her skills are unreal. She waxes and threads my brows into a stunning shape, tints them to fill any gaps and voila, I’m left with precision brows that add to the whole look. Even without wearing a full face of makeup in the coming weeks, having these two simple treatments makes me look – and feel – wider awake. Who needs coffee when you’ve got lashes for days? Twiink Studio will also be bringing one of New Zealand’s premier brands, Martelli Goddess Mineral Make Up, to the UAE. Offering flawless, hydrated skin with a beautiful dewy finish, the mineral based make up is perfect for the warm UAE weather. General Manager at Marriott Hotel Al Forsan Abu Dhabi Looking back on 2019, what are your most memorable professional achievements? In 2019 I was fortunate enough to work on a project bringing all Marriott hotels in Abu Dhabi together, under Marriott Abu Dhabi Business Council, to sponsor the Special Olympics. Through this, as a company, we were able to provide 6,000 volunteer hours for the Special Olympics and host teams from across the globe in our Abu Dhabi hotels. This was something that went hand in hand with the culture of Marriott, whilst the support of the Special Olympics contributed to our companyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Server 360 impact goals. Prior to calling Marriott Hotel Al Forsan Abu Dhabi home, I led the team at Marriott Hotel and Marriott Executive Apartments Downtown to success by achieving growth in revenue per available room (RevPAR), exceeding budgeted gross operating profit (GOP) and acing the Marriott brand standard audit scores, three 98

huge achievements. At Marriott Hotel Al Forsan Abu Dhabi, a hotel that is already over-achieving its targets, I hope to continue similar accomplishments with the support of an exceptional team. Share with us your favourite cultural hotspots to visit in Abu Dhabi and why... My family and I enjoy Qasr Al Hosn, which has undergone a great restoration project recently, now transformed into a fantastic national monument. It is especially significant for the city as it was the location of Abu Dhabiâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first permanent building, essentially where the city started. Heritage Village is also on my list as it reminds me of a simpler and original way of life. Heritage Village also offers fantastic views back over the city skyline of Abu Dhabi, providing a great contrast to the traditions you experience in the village.

As we get ready to enter 2020, what are some of your goals for the near future? In 2020, we have a huge opportunity to continue the success of this year; promoting Abu Dhabi as a top tourist destination, focusing on the culture of the United Arab Emirates. Having just started my new role at Marriott Hotel Al Forsan Abu Dhabi, I would like to continue the hotelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s success and growth, in line with the capitals, and ensure that as a hotel we are aligned with the efforts the Department of Culture and Tourism. We will also, of course, be focused on supporting Expo 2020 and seeing how the hotel can utilise this event and the other key country-wide initiatives. 2020 is also an exciting year for Al Forsan International Sports Resort, who are of course connected to the hotel. The Sports Resort has a lot of exciting activities planned for the year ahead, including enhancements to the facilities which will be unveiled in early 2020.
