“
New year — a new chapter, new verse, or just the same old story? Ultimately we write it. The choice is ours.” – Alex Morritt
A
nother New Year’s letter means another chance to bring you an attemp at words of inspiration to kick-start your next 365 days. Now, anyone who knows me will tell you that I love a good motivational meme, uplifting quote or kick-up-the-perky peach words of wisdom - after all, isn’t that why we have Instagram? However, like every year, FACT focuses on helping you to enhance your lifestyle in the most positive way. No pressure. No judgement. Just good information. And this January is no different. If you’re someone who thinks that Abu Dhabi is lacking in choices to better your every day wellbeing - think again. There are a ton of organisations, brands, groups, classes, products and more that will cater to everything from helping you to save money, spend your time wisely and to take care of your body. With that in mind, we’ve put together 9 Resolutions for 2019 (p21) some big, some small, others fun, and maybe even life-changing – all things that you can enjoy doing in Abu Dhabi over the next 12 months. From picking up a new skill to getting involved with charity work, there’s at least one thing that each of you can commit to doing for a better 2019! This month, the FACT globetrotters have been on a series of great adventures around the world. We bring you the hidden gem of Asia with a very special trip to Taiwan (p46). If you’re a huge fan of trendy, creative and out-of-the-box hospitality, then check out our exclusive first-look at the recently-opened W Amman, a pioneering brand in the Jordanian capital (p53). Have you stayed at Park Rotana yet? Our latest staycation comes from the understated comfort and luxury of the 5-star hotspot near Khalifa Park (p41). The next few months are going to be busy in the FACT office as we plan the 5th annual FACT Dining Awards Abu Dhabi, ready to recognise all the amazing food and beverage outlets in the city – keep an eye out for the shortlist of nominees in our next issue and don’t forget to vote online for your favourites! The excitement for the new and final GoT season is REAL. I’m breaking all the rules this year and opting to live my best life away from resolutions and unrealistic expectations. My love for memes and Netflix continues.... Happy New Year everyone.☺

ART ATTACK AT ANDAZ The city’s newest boutique luxury lifestyle hotel welcomes travellers to unwind in a space that celebrates local arts and culture. ANDAZ CAPITAL GATE ABU DHABI recently opened its doors as the first foray of Hyatt’s luxury lifestyle brand. The brand, meaning ‘personal style’ in Hindi, has been well received by cultural hubs across the world such as London, New York and Tokyo, welcoming local art, music, and literature through an all encompassing experience that entices the senses. Inclining at 18° west, the luxury boutique hotel, also famed as the ‘leaning tower of Abu Dhabi’ is the focal point of the buzzing Capital centre. The ground floor is home to the newly opened 165 Below art gallery, in conjunction with International Artists Management (iAM). The permanent art gallery can accommodate for up to 70 works and serves as a platform for upcoming Emirati and GCC artists. Open to the public, 165 Below is set to host events throughout the year, such as meet and greet artist evenings, art mornings for the community, artist in residence programs in conjunction with schools, pop-up galleries, and ArtTalks. Nada Al Amerie, an local artist of note, whose works are featured in the gallery, said: “165 Below Art Gallery provides local talent with a wonderful platform upon which their work can be showcased. This has the added benefit of giving a voice to new members of the art community, whilst introducing exhibition goers to the rich culture of the UAE. “Through my works, I aim to depict key figures of the region such 12

as leaders, the natural fauna and other elements, in eye-catching hues that capture attention from onlookers.” Over and above this, the property introduces visitors to key local motifs, such as the iconic Date Palm, Mashrabiya, detailed wooden patterns and Al Sadu, traditional weaving of colourful fabric, making appearances in key cards, hotel stationary, luggage tags and other decorative elements. Khatt, or Islamic calligraphy, has been skillfully decaled on the property’s windows. “Elements of the hotel have been crafted to reflect the surrounding culture, bringing to life the Andaz vision, of arriving a tourist and leaving a local. A pinnacle part of this is the new 165 Below art gallery, open 24/7 and featuring a permanent installation of local emerging Arab artists. Guests are promised an immersive hospitality experience, and personalised service like no other - giving visitors a sense of a home away from home,” shares Stuart Deeson, General Manager of Andaz Capital Gate Abu Dhabi and Area Vice President of Abu Dhabi for Hyatt. ✤

ECO RESORT GOALS Jumeirah Group has opened its first luxury “eco-conscious” Resort, nestled on the pristine shores of Saadiyat Island. JUMEIRAH AT SAADIYAT ISLAND RESORT is a luxury beachfront resort that overlooks 400 metres of beautiful white sand on the Arabian Gulf and offers a front-row seat to breathtakingly beautiful scenery and undisturbed wildlife. Depending on the season, guests may catch a glimpse of Indopacific humpback and bottle nose dolphins, green or hawksbill turtles and dugongs, which live in the Saadiyat Mangroves. More inland, gazelles, socotra cormorants, grey herons and greater flamingos are known to visit too. General Manager, Linda Griffin, said: “This Resort is a place like no other. Located next to one of the most spectacular beaches in the Arabian Gulf, every aspect of the resort's design has been influenced by the beauty of this location. “Our commitment to protecting the natural sand dunes and sea around this hotel means that we are also continuously trying to minimise the impact that guests have on this environment by bringing in our own environmentally-friendly solutions and working with partners who are dedicated to employing sustainable, ethical practices in their businesses,” she added. Eco-conscious practices at the resort go beyond preserving the island's protected sand dunes - Jumeirah has partnered with Dubai-based water treatment company Trust Your Water to reduce single-use plastics. Guests are offered locally-sourced filtered still and sparkling water in their own personal reusable bottles that can be refilled at the resort’s water stations. The resort has also eliminated the use of plastic straws, favouring 14

straws made from recycled material. Just a 10-minute drive from Abu Dhabi city centre, guests can explore the island’s 9kms of mesmerising white beach and the crystal clear waters of the Arabian Gulf which provide a feeling of relaxation and harmony. 7 FOUNTS OF STRENGTH First Solo Exhibition by the Spanish-German sculptor Damián Valles Castro will be on display at Emirates Palace, Abu Dhabi. IN SEVEN LARGE-SIZED RELIEFS individual aspects are depicted which, in abstract form, symbolize sources (founts) from which the people in the United Arab Emirates draw their almost inexhaustible strength and motivation to accomplish the most difficult challenges and to achieve even the most ambitious goals. The artist, Damián Valles Castro, applied a wide range of manufacturing and processing techniques in this series. In addition to various, sometimes very filigree carving and grinding techniques, a highly sensitive sandblasting treatment, as an intermediate step, was also used for the first time in one of the works. Impressive light and shadow effects as well as the perceptible visual haptics contribute to the fascination that each individual exhibit evokes. The viewer is inspired to open up their space for creative interpretations and to mentally connect with the creator of the works. The overall aim of the exhibition is to widen the understanding of the many different cultures in and related to the United Arab Emirates and to further deepen the existing sincere friendships between them. Sculptor Damián Valles Castro is a master craftsman of filigree art and a virtuoso woodcarver. The artist experiments occasionally with different surface treatments such as sandblasting. He also uses pigments and other ornate coatings such as gold 16

leaf, silver or bronze, which at times completely hide the base material, wood. Unlike any other artist Damián Valles Castro embeds his work so harmoniously in its setting that the viewer gets the impression the room or areas surrounding his art were made only to frame it. ✤

ZIMOUN In Spring 2019, the NYU Abu Dhabi Art Gallery (NYUAD), will present the work of acclaimed Swiss artist Zimoun, featuring five immersive audio-visual installations. OPEN TO THE PUBLIC FROM February 26 to June 1, 2019, this exhibition will include a major new commission, an expansive room-sized installation that will be unveiled on the opening night. Zimoun constructs extraordinary, immersive sensory experiences using lo-fi, analogue motors connected to various functional objects, like wooden sticks, cardboard boxes, and foil. All of the sound in his installations comes from the movement of these simple objects. He creates chaos from underlying systems of order, exploring elements of biology, engineering, music, sound, and installation art. When a visitor walks into one of his minimalistic mechanised sculptures, they’re confronted with a unique and compelling visual soundscape, one that simultaneously evokes the urban experience while eliciting almost physical memories of natural sounds (rain, sandstorms, or wind). Zimoun says: "I explore simple systems which involve various complexities in sound and motion. Through primitive mechanical systems, I look to activate simple and raw materials which then start to develop a complex behaviour,” he explained. “The sounds my installations produce are generated immediately through the activation of the materials themselves. In fact, I like to refer to my work as 'Primitive Complexities'." The exhibition will also activate the Gallery’s reading room with
multi-channel compositions from a record label project that Zimoun co-founded, Leerraum, (translated meaning ‘empty space’) which produces experimental music projects on CD, DVD, print, and sound objects, with nearly 100 works from 50 international artists and designers, illustrating once more the immersive nature of Zimoun’s work. ✤

2 BREATHE LIGHTER This one goes out to all the smokers who really want to kick the habit but find it difficult to do so! Frankly, it’s time to quit smoking. To be fair, this should be on the top of everyone’s list all year round, but New Year does make for a perfect excuse. We know it’s easier said than done, but once you make that decision, it is truly not as hard as you may think! The toughest bit is breaking the habit and so it is a good idea to change up your routine by, for example, sitting somewhere you don’t usually smoke or taking up a new hobby that will keep you busy in free hours. Whether it’s binge-watching a new series on Netflix or sweating it out on the treadmill, trying out your cooking skills or even meditating – finding what makes you stop thinking about the nicotine rush is what’s important here. If you’re not up for going ‘cold turkey’, as they say, there is aid at hand. You could invest in some patches or gum, or head over to UAE Hypnosis which helps you to tackle the emotional reliance on smoking (www.uaehypnosis.com/stop-smoking/). We’d recommend visiting the I Quit Smoking website (www.iqs-uae. com) for auriculotherapy – a method derived from acupuncture. Or check the Ministry of Health website (www.mohap.gov.ae) to find out about possible smoking cessation clinics that offer free and effective methods for locals and expatriates to take advantage of.
3 DONATE
YOUR TIME
What better way to feed the soul and develop your character than by giving unselfishly to others? There are good causes aplenty to get involved with in Dubai. One that is fresh in everyone’s mind for their constant efforts is Abu Dhabi Animal Shelter (www.abudhabianimalshelter.com) which is committed to save the lives of animals through adoption and foster care. Then there’s K9 Friends (www.k9friends.com/) - it’s a fantastic animal shelter that rescues abandoned and stray dogs and is dedicated to providing a safe haven for them in the UAE until they can be placed in loving homes. There are a number of ways you can volunteer at K9 Friends, from working directly with the animals to helping out with events, admin and manning the office. One of our other favourites is the UAE Dolphin Project, a non-profit initiative dedicated to investigating the dolphin population along the UAE coastline, to provide scientific information and to support the conservation of these local marine species (www.uaedolphinproject. org/volunteering). If you want to go green this year and want some ecofriendly tips and tricks to better living in Abu Dhabi, keep up-to-date with the The Change Initiative (www.thechangeinitiative.com), the first shop in the UAE to sell only sustainable, environmentally-friendly products, where you can pop in and ask the staff on how you can make improvements to your home. Whether you want to look after children or would love to lend an ear to a cancer sufferer, there is a charity or group for everyone here. And if you can’t find what you’re looking for, why not start your own? fact magazine

4 BUILD SOME MAD SKILLS
We mean expand your talent repertoire by learning something new! A language, perhaps? Arabic should be a priority for all expats, and for this you can head to the long-standing The Arabic Language Centre (www.arabiclanguagecentre.com). But, there are plenty of other tongues to be mastered so check out what classes are available at Berlitz Language Centre (www.berlitz.ae) or the Pomegranate Institute (www.pomegranateinstitute.com) – to name a few. You could also learn traditional Arabic calligraphy in lessons at DUCTAC (www.ductac.org). But maybe arts is more your thing. There are so many activities to choose from, such as learning an instrument, singing, amateur dramatics or film and photography. Or, if you head to Manarat Al Saadiyat (www.manaratalsaadiyat. ae), there is plenty to get creative with including art clubs, classes and workshops including ceramics, design, acrylic painting, regular performances, exhibitions and more. If you like to cook, on the other hand, amazing chefs around the country offer cooking classes and tasting sessions. To name just a couple of the places where this is offered at certain times of the year, keep an eye on the Park Rotana Abu Dhabi (02 657 3333) and the Sheraton Abu Dhabi Hotel & Resort (02 677 3333) where chefs host group cooking classes with a sumptuous meal to follow. There is no end to the activities that are available to you in Abu Dhabi, so what are you waiting for?
5 TIGHTEN THE PURSE STRINGS Easier said than done in up-and-coming, pricey Abu Dhabi, but we promise it is doable! First of all, instead of going out and schmoozing all the time, why not have more soirees at home? Get a BBQ roaring and some music blasting, and you have a good night on the cards that doesn’t need to cost a week’s wage! Of course, one way to save lots of pennies is to stop eating out at lunch. Make it the night before and pack it up for tomorrow’s al-desko session. But, don’t let it be the end of your social life! There are many reasonably priced restaurants and bars to visit. For a cheap and cheerful dinner one of our favourites Art House Café (02 418 2466) with its simple dining set up and delicious array of indulgent fare. Fuel up at SoulFull with yummy healthy dishes for great prices (www.soulfull.ae). Another good place for tea and snacks is Bhavna which serves up some of the best masala tea with soda dosa for under AED10 (02 677 4288). Our favourite spots for a reasonable night out are McGettigan’s (02 652 4333), The Sportsman’s Arms in Zayed Sports City (02 447 1066), and Barfly by Buddha-Bar, The Venetian Village (02 404 1951). Don’t forget all the Happy Hours that run throughout the city every day - a fab way to save your faloos! 24

6 BANISH
THE BULGE
After a month of gorging, only the luckiest of souls will have little or no belly bulge. It’s inevitable, especially when you keep telling yourself ‘That’ll be my resolution!’ (every year). But it’s not a problem this time, as Dubai has plenty of options to get rid of that muffin top in no time. Firstly, you have to decide to adopt a new lifestyle, rather than going on a ‘diet’ for just a short amount of time. Just a dash of healthy eating and a dollop of good exercise will do the trick, and you’ll be amazed at how easy (and addictive) it is! You could join a gym or get involved with a team sport or, simply go for (at least) a half hour walk every evening. Then, make sure the pantry is guilt-free. If you’re not confident to take the plunge yourself at first, there are some places and people to help! VLCC Slimming Beauty Fitness (www.vlccwellness.com/ UAE), for example, will assess your BMI (Body Mass Index) and then explore customised weight loss options with you. Or, Right Bite Nutrition Centre (www.rightbite.com) consultations will deliver meals that have been created just for you, straight to your door. So, go on then... no excuses!

7 HEALING
FROM WITHIN
To those unfamiliar with Reiki, it is a practice, otherwise known as a healing art, that originated in Japan developed by Dr Mikao Usui and works to promote self- healing on all levels – physical, psychological, emotional and spiritual. So what happens during a Reiki session? Well, every individual reacts differently to a treatment. It works by channeling energy to the body which enables it to eliminate toxins. Your Reiki master will places their hands on the recipient’s body, and from the sensation they feel, they’re able to gauge the level of toxins within your body. Although some may argue the treatments make no personal difference, Reiki is not designed to give instant relief and over a course of treatments, significant changes can be seen inside and out. Reiki is a gentle healing therapy which compliments medical and other holistic therapies. There are plenty of reiki practioners in Abu Dhabi who can perform the life-changing therapy on you or even offer coaching: we’d recommend Reiki by Caroline McElwee (www.abudhabireikibycarolinemcelwee.com), Change Works (www.changeworksad.com), and Miracles (www. miraclesworldwide.com/miracles-in-abu-dhabi/), which all offer reliable and certified guidance.
8 INDULGE IN THE ORGANIC WORLD While many people are reluctant to change, perhaps it’s time to take a risk and try something new, so why not start with your food? Organic food and, more specifically, plant-based diets have become HUGE in the health world. Organic food is produced using methods that do not involve modern synthetic inputs such as synthetic pesticides and chemical fertilisers. Although the farming movement arose in the 1940s in response to the industrialisation of agriculture known as the Green Revolution, organic food production has recently reached a peak of popularity. On top of this, vegan lifestyles are being adopted more and more by people who come to realise that going green on their plates is ultimately great for their bodies. Luckily, many major supermarkets in Dubai offer up good organic food sections, whilst those looking for something super fresh and dependable, check out Greenheart Organic Farms (www.greenheartuae.com) or Kibsons (www. kibsons.com) who deliver delicious organic groceries to your door. One of our favourites is Farmbox (www.farmbox.ae), where you can customise your own weekly box of fresh fruit and vegetables to be delivered straight to your address in a timely manner. You’ll also get the added bonus of a recipe blog in collaboration with Oscar & Jemima’s for healthy, yummy meal ideas. Organic & Real (www.organicandreal.com) is one of the UAE’s newer fresh food delivery services and offers all sorts of goodies, including gifting hampers, sustainable products and even superfoods, sauces, and a host of vegan produce. Going organic or simply cutting out meat for more fresh fruit and veggies on your plate, has never been as easy as it is in 2019! 26

9 LIVE YOUR
BEST LIFE
This is probably the most important resolution to make – and one that you should be living up to every single day. If you don’t feel quite happy no matter what you do, it is perhaps time to make some serious changes in your life.
Reinventing yourself can give you a whole new perspective on life and take you in directions you may never have dreamed were possible. Maybe you find solace in travelling and experiencing new cultures – invest some time and effort into planning and going on more trips, even if it’s just a local or regional staycation to clear your mind and recharge. Learn how to be more self-reliant; yes, we’re guilty of the convenience apps like Deliveroo and Uber, and nowadays you can even book people to clean your home or someone to drop off your groceries from the supermarket on the same road – technology offers all manners of useful tools and these things have made us somewhat spoiled. Brush up on your survival skills with a tech-free digital detox and become more independent and self-reliant. Face your fears and insecurities; you’ll find this particular point masked beneath other New Year’s resolutions, but fear and insecurity are often the cause of several problems that we want to address. You need to think of it as surviving and controlling your fear rather than overcoming it, and it will enable you to shed off a lot of the insecurities that you have. Unleash your creativity to avoid mental fatigue. Read more about music, arts, anything that peaks your interest and notice how you’ll come up with fresh ideas and think outside the box. As with anything else, there are many resources that help you spark your creativity in a number of different ways. Most of all, stick to the good healthy habits you’ve developed: the last, and most important point to mention is that all the positive changes you make have to be permanent. You will need to work on sticking with the good habits you have adopted, until they just become a natural part of who you are – after all, that’s true self-improvement.

DNA
By Backstreet Boys Ushering in the next era of BSB, the fivepiece is back with their latest LP and it’s like all of our 90’s bo yband dreams have come true. Bringing together all of their different influences and styles into one coherent piece of work, the album is a great representation of who the band is as individuals and who they are as a group. Featuring synths and a piano-driven tune, Don’t Go Breaking My Heart is something else entirely from their previous releases. Staying true to who they are as a group, the sound is a modern update while keeping their classical harmonies intact. Major 90’s nostalgia here! A depiction of what crucial element each member represents in the group’s DNA, their new soundtrack may be sonically similar to their previous albums in some ways, but it definitely stands on its own. Chances, written by Shawn Mendes and Ryan Tedder tells the story of finding love in different situations. Offering a memorable chorus that is full of hope while still being emotionally provoking, the track features pop as well as some electronic touches. A single that highlights the strengths of BSB. With giving everyone a moment to shine and create some really good music, DNA is heading for chart success in the legendary boy band’s musical repertoire.

ICARUS FALLS By Zayn
After blessing us with some breathtaking and catchy singles throughout 2018, Zayn Malik has finally released his second studio album. With Timbaland as one of its producers, Zayn’s latest release is a collection of the singer’s most raw and vulnerable work yet. Putting his intoxicating vocals at centre stage, Entertainer is punctuated by laidback synths and a minimalist, plaintive tone. The mid-tempo ballad is definitely one of Zayn’s best works yet and our new favourite! Coming a long way since his One Direction days, Zayn has truly grown and evolved as a singer. Let Me, a pure and smooth R&B track designed to tug on your heartstrings will make you feel all warm and fuzzy. Matching up gentle guitar chords with a subtle baseline and persistent synths, the song definitely displays the singer’s growth as a solo star. With the release of back-to-back chart topping hits, this has definitely been a big year in music for Zayn Malik. It’s no wonder that Icarus Falls is a mammoth record of 27 songs that highlight every single thought his fans have had in the two years and nine months since his debut release – we didn’t ask for this much love, but we’ll take it.
With our fast-paced lives taking a toll on us every now and then, it’s always a good idea to slow down and take care of your mental wellbeing. This is a mental health guide that walks readers through the most commonly asked questions and the process of getting help. Explaining the difference between mental health and mental illness, Morton answers various important questions including how to make your first therapy appointment, the red flags of a mental health issue, which therapist is best for you and more.

iews from the Park Rotana are simply wonderful; Khalifa Park and its many walkways and corners, the stunning Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and Sheikh Zayed Bridge, are just some of the beautiful places you can see, subject to the room type you opt for. The hotel is also in good proximity to many of Abu Dhabi’s biggest sites, cultural attractions, leisure activities and other points of interest. We check in on a bright winter’s day to be welcomed by the friendly front-desk staff. We’re escorted up by a well-informed member of the concierge staff, who kindly brings our luggage with him – on first impressions, the service is so far, so great!
CLUB ROTANA LIFE
If you’re a traveller who enjoys the finer things and added touches in a hotel stay, then this is the room type for you! Just getting off the lift and onto the Club Level, we were immediately relaxed. The corridor had a very
regal and elegant charm, with sophisticated interiors and creative yet stylish design. The pleasant surprise continued as we entered the room. It’s a generous size with comfy chairs to sink into by the window and plump bedding to fall onto for a good night’s sleep. There’s a flat screen TV and all the usual inroom amenities like a fully-stocked minibar, snacks and fruits, and lots of storage space. The robes and slippers are super comfy, as is the zen layout of the bedroom and bathroom. There’s also a desk that’s perfect to perch at when catching up with emails and work. The design of the room is not only thoughtful and practical, it’s very homely and vibrant, giving a feeling of relaxation and ease – we loved it! And, when you’re staying in the Club Rotana room, you have the benefit of complimentary access to the Club Lounge on the 9th floor, where breakfast and evening cocktails are served, also complimentary (both have a good selection of food and drinks). You also enjoy complimentary internet, and we found that all the room amenities such as the walkin shower, fast Wi-Fi, tea and coffee making facilities, hair dryer, in-room safe, and much more, was all up to a high standard that we’ve come to expect from a Rotana hotel.
DYNAMIC DINING
There’s no room for boredom when it comes to food and satisfying different tastes at Park Rotana Abu Dhabi. For an excellent all-day dining option, head to Ginger for a sumptuous buffet spread of classic Arabic favourites and international specialties, as well as a good a la carte menu too. In the evening, change it up and head to the hotel’s signature restaurant, Teatro, for dinner; an exceptionally gorgeous venue adorned with
venetian masks, mood lighting, deep warm colours and beaded crystal features as well as hand blown glasses, all making for a laidback ambience and casual dining experience. Here, you can savour an extensive a la carte menu that creatively blends Thai, Chinese, Japanese, Indian and Italian cuisines. The bar area is fantastic for pre-dinner drinks or a catch up over nibbles, while diners can also watch the live cooking station and sushi bar as chefs prepare meals. There’s a good choice of outdoor and indoor seating areas and if you’re a foodie, like us, there’s SO much mouthwatering food to try. We’d recommend the delicious Tom Yum Soup, the gyoza dumplings and duck dim sum alongside the aromatic King Fish Curry. For dessert, it has to be the mochi ice cream – just divine! If you want straight up informal and fun, then the award-winning Cooper’s Bar & Restaurant is for you. This pub-style traditional British sports bar has a good menu of international classics with a wide range of beverages, and live sports coverage to keep the vibe social.
RECREATION GOALS
Though Rotana is known for its simple and comfortable facilities, Park Rotana Abu Dhabi takes this up a notch. The pool and garden area is substantial with plenty of sun loungers for lazy days. To top this off there’s a well-equipped, award-winning Bodylines Fitness & Wellness Club where the trainers are helpful and experienced if you want advice on your workout routine. As always, there are more surprises in store and this time it’s in the form of their spa. We expected more of a health club feeling with a clinical setting; however, this lovely spa is a completely laid-back space that could, again, fact magazine

For a hotel that isn’t in the centre of the city or even on a beach, Park Rotana does an impeccable job of making guests feel like they’re a world away from the worries of every day life. Every aspect of the hotel’s services is exceeded; including accommodation, food options, recreational facilities and the general ambience – all classy and welcoming. If you want a first-hand experience of great hospitality, the Park Rotana Abu Dhabi would be a fabulous place to get you well acquainted with one of the region’s most popular hotel brands, no to mention a hotel that will surely be amongst some of the best you’ve stayed in, in the capital. ✤

THE HISTORIAN The National Palace Museum Unleash your inner Indiana Jones at The National Palace Museum and explore an incredible selection of the finest Chinese art and artifacts. It’s a miracle to think that some of the most delicate porcelain, calligraphy and paintings made it to Taiwan from mainland China after surviving the ousting of the last Chinese emperor, an invasion by the Japanese and a cultural revolution! One of the most popular attractions is a tiny handcarved cabbage, specifically ‘bok choy’! It doesn't sound that exciting and it’s a little underwhelming, but props to the unknown sculptor - it took an incredible amount of skill to carve a tiny bok choy from one piece of jadeite, plus the story behind it has a little romance! Historians say that it was probably a gift for the emperor’s new wife symbolising purity and fertility. If using all that brain power has worked up an appetite there are some excellent choices for lunch; try Silks Palace for traditional Chinese cuisine with a modern touch and superb value for money. Liberty Square & Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall As you enter Liberty Square, the first thing that hits you is the magnitude of the Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall. Inside sits a gigantic statue of the man himself watched over by unflinching sentinels. One of the highlights of our visit was watching the changing of the guards, which happens on the hour, from 9am to 5pm. The former political and military leader of Taiwan, Chiang Kai-shek has a dedicated memorial that houses a museum documenting his life and career, offering a glimpse into the life of Taiwan’s longest serving leader. Mazu Temple There are a whopping 15,000 official temples in Taiwan, each of them is not only a local centre of faith but a living museum of folk art whose collections include exquisite stone carvings, colourful paintings and elaborate wood decorations. The Lugang Mazu Temple is an excellent example of this with some of the most exceptional artwork created by renowned masters. Dedicated to Chinese sea goddess Mazu, the temple is a national historic landmark, standing the test of time for over four hundred years! Visit during the daytime to observe worshippers peacefully going about their mantras and mudras amongst an aromatic haze of incense.
THE FOODIE Jiufen Old Street Tip #1: come hungry! Jiufen is known for its network of narrow alleyways, packed with teahouses, street food vendors and souvenir shops. The atmosphere is alive with droves of people politely shuffling up and down the crowded paths, dipping in and out of an eclectic variety of shops. It’s a sensory overload with smells, sights and sounds coming from all directions; most eateries showcase everything from food prep to cooking at the shop front, enticing passers by with curiosity and wafts of delicious fare. One of the most iconic Taiwanese treats that you’ll encounter are Tea Eggs. They taste a lot better than they look (picture partly cracked eggs in simmering brown water). The eggs are parboiled in strong tea and Chinese spices, giving the usually white egg a brown-marbled finish and unusual sweet and savoury taste. Feeling adventurous? How about snacking on some snails - not your regular garden variety - these slimey little suckers are as big as your fist! Wash it all down with your choice of savoury oolong tea or kitchy sweet bubble tea. Xing Yuan Tea Farm A true foodie not only loves the delight of eating but also appreciates the finer details of cultivation, food origin, and gastronomy. There are literally hundreds of tea farms in Taiwan, one of the best being the Xing Yuan Tea Farm in Yilan County. Enjoy harvesting, dehydrating, rolling and drying your very own Oolong tea. While your hand-picked leaves are crisping up in the industrial dryer, put your feet up and feast on a teainspired lunch. Lastly, learn how to make smooth homemade matcha ice cream in under 10 minutes! fact magazine

Formosa Aboriginal Culture Village & Theme Park Bump up your daily steps exploring the park, experience a rush of adrenaline on one of the many park rides and enjoy some cultural displays and colourful Aboriginal dance performances; there is something for everyone to enjoy at this diverse theme park. The grounds of the park have been landscaped beautifully, and, if you’re lucky enough to visit during the Sakura (cherry blossom) season between January and March, you’ll be in for a treat! Shifen Sky Lantern The age-old tradition of releasing lanterns into the sky was once used as a signaling system before modern day communications; today sky lanterns are used in festivities all over the world. Each year, between February and March, Taiwan celebrates this deep-rooted folk culture during the prestigious Taiwan Lantern Festival. Visitors are in for a sensory treat with high-tech lantern displays, traditional Aboriginal dance performances, music and art. If you want to experience this historic custom first hand, we recommend you head up to Shifen Old Street, located in Pingxi District of New Taipei. This is the only area of Taiwan where sky lanterns are allowed to be released due to its sparse population and high altitude. This small town has become a magnet for locals and tourists with its network of alleys around one of the old rail tracks lined with sky lantern sellers, souvenir shops and eateries. Pick up your very own sky lantern for about 20 dirhams, paint on a personalised message, wish or prayer and the vendor will help you to release it into the sky! ✤

Amman is the brand’s first property in Jordan. Developed by Eagle Hills Jordan, the 280-room hotel is located in the heart of Amman’s up and coming new downtown neighborhood, Abdali, and features design inspired by the energy of the Middle East and charm of Jordanian history, culture and tradition with a playfully modern twist. W Amman stands tall as a contemporary and unmistakable architectural statement, offering stunning views of the bustling city’s seven hills running across the Jordanian capital. Upon arrival, guests are greeted with the iconic W sign, inspired by Amman’s unique cityscape and cubic architecture, in the colors of Jordan’s distinctive sunset. Stepping into the Welcome area, the hotel’s façade invokes the unique and colossal beauty of Petra’s rock formations, reminiscent of the Nabatean city’s striking appearance, one of the new Seven Wonders of the World. Throughout the Canyon Walk, guests are enveloped in a modern design marvel, reinterpreting the natural beauty of Petra’s canyon with shard structures and natural tones that can also be seen throughout the hotel. LOBBY LIFE The hotel’s Living Room (the brand’s take on the traditional lobby) is a clubhouse for the modern traveller, showcasing a fusion of intimate and open areas, low seating and mood-setting lighting among architectural features that mirror Amman’s extraordinary cityscape. Elements of Bedouin weaving, flower pots, and locally designed pillows from the Jordan River Foundation (a non-profit focusing on child safety and community empowerment) provide modernised versions of common patterns, colors and shapes from the city. The space is complemented by modern art from Bahraini artist, Jamal A. Rahim that gives an edge of Middle Eastern influence and bright splashes of color alongside the work of Jordanian 54

Amman: There’s plenty in Amman to encourage you to linger a while before making it to Petra, the Dead Sea or Wadi Rum. The city holds many surprises for visitors. Discover its many art galleries and charming neighborhoods, spend your afternoon away and enjoy shisha on a chic cafe terrace, indulge your cravings on the region’s varied and delicious cuisine or enjoy a night out in one of its thriving local areas, pubs and live music venues. Modern shopping malls are increasingly abundant in Amman but open air souqs are what many travelers will remember the most. Amman enjoys great weather for much of the year and local people are very friendly. Wadi Rum: Don’t pass up an opportunity to stay at one of the many Bedouin guest camps, whose furnished tent accommodations are modest, clean, and comfortable. Feast on delicious grilled meats and vegetables. Don’t sleep in because a camel ride to watch the sunrise in Wadi Rum is an experience you’ll never forget. Petra: The magnificent and magical handcarved architecture of Petra is Jordan’s number one attraction. Today the Treasury (the Temple of the Sun in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade) is the best-known feature in Petra. Hike or climb to the muchlarger and equally impressive monastery. The Dead Sea: The lowest place on the face of earth, the Dead Sea (431m below sea level) brings together breathtaking natural beauty. And in case you are wondering, yes you really float on top! The minerals of the Dead Sea have healing qualities and many people book retreats to help with ailments. This calm destination with its translucent azure waters makes the Dead Sea a hauntingly beautiful spot and incredibly relaxing spa resort. Wadi Al Moujib: Splashing around in the waters of Wadi Mujib for a day in the warm waters of Jordan is a must try experience, beginning with a rappel down a waterfall into fast flowing water. Plunge down natural waterslides and slide through narrow gorges. It’ s amazing way to escape the heat and get your adventure on. GO: CALL +962 6 510 8888 FOR RESERVATIONS AND MORE INFORMATION.

DYNAMIC DRIVING: ALL-NEW BMW X5 The founding father of the X-model family, BMW has surpassed many motoring expectations with the all-new BMW X5. FACT takes the eye-catching SAV (Sports Activity Vehicle) out onto the UAE roads for a spin…
fact magazine

• CITY RIDES
S
till maintaining the core values and characteristics of what was the first-ever SAV (Sports Activity Vehicle), the 2019 BMW X5 appears to have really grown up. Eye-catching off-road attributes and assured performance on rough ground combined with the premium specifications and signature dynamics of a BMW - this was the blueprint with which BMW launched the all-new SAV two decades ago – and now, the boss is back with a vengeance, reclaiming its market-leading position in the premium all-wheel drive segment. From the moment we step into the car, one thing is for sure; it is larger in length, height and width, offering more space that is both practical and luxurious. The new wheelbase is 42mm longer than its predecessor’s (now 2975mm), a 36mm increase in vehicle length (to 4922mm), an extra 66mm of width (now 2004mm) and a 19mm increase in height (to 1745mm) give the new BMW X5 both an imposing appearance and generous levels of space for passengers and their luggage. Up to seven seats of family convenience but without sacrificing the driving feel that the X5 has always been known for, this car isn’t pretending to be an off-roader meets style – it IS just that in reality. The muscular, athletic stance the car takes, definitely turns heads – something that BMW X5 enthusiasts will appreciate, especially as many wanted something more aggressive and rugged to match up to its competitors, such as the Audi Q7, Mercedes-Benz GLE, and Volvo XC90. Evidently, the all-new BMW X5 is designed to be more robust and hold authority and assurance on the roads. A powerfully sculpted bonnet, a short front overhang, lightly hexagonal wheel arches and the dynamic sweep of the roofline add to the sporty yet strong character of the new X5. The most striking feature of the front end is the large BMW kidney grille with single-piece surround. LED adaptive headlights are standard, but you can have striking BMW Laserlights instead as an option. This system employs a BMW Laserlight spotlight with Selective Beam to optimise the high beam function, and as a result, even in the daytime you can spot them by virtue of a blue X-shaped trim inside the headlight clusters, in the range of the non-dazzling high beam has been increased to around 1,600 feet. Pretty impressive for when you’re tackling the long drives on UAE highways. The precise character line in the car's flanks, which rises up at the rear door, contributes to the modern appearance of the new X5. It defines the car’s powerful shoulders and feeds into the rear lights, which extend well into the flanks. All the lights feature LED technology in the rear too. The all-new BMW X5 also comes with a bevy of innovative features inside. The interior exudes a classy and modern aura thanks to sophisticated materials, harmonious design and an innovative control concept. The instrument panel is broken up by sweeping horizontal lines, which combine with classy electroplated trim elements to emphasise the width of the interior. The centre console rises up to the instrument panel so as to give easier access to the standard cubbyholes, while enhancing the feeling of space up front. The whole set up falls on the very handsome side of luxury. Most of all, the raised seating position, driver-focused cockpit and new design and arrangement of the controls offer the driver a more focused view of the road alongside ultimate control when driving – and we definitely need more of that here! 60

Inside, the BMW X5, the carefully selected materials in the interior include the new Vernasca variant for the standard leather upholstery, available in a variety of five colours. It is fitted as standard with electrically adjustable and heated sports seats. Customers can also specify optional multifunction seats with massage function and seat ventilation for the driver and front passenger – pure creature comforts that we’ve become accustomed to, even whilst driving, in the UAE. There’s a four-zone climate control, a panoramic glass roof now 30-percent larger than the old car, and standard ambient lighting with a pleasant “Welcome Light Carpet” that illuminates the entry areas when the doors are unlocked. The optional Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System – with its output of 1,500 watts spread across 20 speakers – is suitably loud and thoroughly crisp. This was a real treat for us as drivers who love to have our favourite playlist on loud. A rear-seat entertainment system with a pair of 10.2-inch touchscreen displays with USB ports, a DVD player, and an HDMI socket is optional, and almost certain to keep the kids (young and old) occupied on longer drives. Ok, let’s get to one of our favourite and most practical features, one that is perfect for anyone who likes to take road trips or weekend staycations. The two-section tailgate, for easier loading and unloading, is a real bonus; tick the options box for the Comfort Access feature, meanwhile, and you can open or close both sections of the tailgate without lifting a finger. Throw in the optional Luggage Compartment package, and the cargo area can even lower itself automatically into the floor. As standard you get seating for five, but if you opt for seven seats then the third row gets electric adjustment, too. It’s all up to you! The design principle underpinning the chassis – based on a double-wishbone front axle and a five-link rear axle – also ticks all the right boxes for supreme traction on rough terrain, coupled with excellent dynamic responses and ride comfort in road driving. The two-axle air suspension, underguard at the front and rear, plus specific displays in

the instrument cluster and control display, all aid in the driving experience. There’s a choice of four driving modes available at the touch of a button. Ride height and the responses of BMW xDrive, DSC, the transmission and the accelerator are adjusted to give an optimum set-up for driving on sand, rock, gravel or snow – equally excellent for trips into the desert and up the mountains. Under the hood, power comes courtesy of a 3.0-litre inline six cylinder turbocharged motor in the BMW X5 xDrive40i. It’s good for 335 horsepower and 330 lb-ft of torque, which arrives between 1,500 rpm and 5,200 rpm. As a result, the new X5 can sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 5.3 seconds. For those looking for more power from their SAV, the BMW X5 xDrive50i upgrades to a turbocharged 4.4-liter V8, complete with 456 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque. There’s enough rumble to tow a large trailer or a medium-sized boat – ideal for weekend holidaymakers. There is much to celebrate about the all-new BMW X5. As far as the premium sporty SUV market is concerend, BMW assures drivers that it well and truly is still in the game. Handling is smooth, there is minimal road noise in the cabin and there is a sturdiness and tenacity that gives the driver immediate confidence when getting behind the wheel of the all-new BMW X5. Its road capabilities and mechanical upgrades allow it to fulfil off-road duties as well as every day driving. This is a car made for urban settings, refined driving and anyone who appreciates the finer side of motoring. ✤

rom video stabalisation to great filming and amazing images, using a GoPro can be a whole lot of fun. While the GoPro might not have had the easiest time of late - the release of their new GoPro Hero 7 Black is the company getting back where it wants to be. The GoPro Hero 7 Black comes with the same kind of rugged and rubbered body as the Hero 6 Black. The new model is also more smartphone like in its operations, with simple directional swipes to access different modes, captured footage/images and more. While you can still alternate between shooting modes with a press of the Mode button on the side, but you can also swipe to do the same. The new HyperSmooth feature is a form of video stabilisation that GoPro ranks as being equivalent to using a gimbal. Developed in response to user feedback, it is ideal for anyone who finds using a gimbal inconvenient. Another great new option on the GoPro Hero7 Black is SuperPhoto, similar to a scene-intelligent auto option on a more conventional camera. It automates a handful of helpful features that you may not think to enable when taking pictures. For those who want a more
customised approach when getting creative, ProTune will give you freedom to adjust things like exposure compensation, white balance, ISO range, sharpness and so on. The GoPro Hero 7 Black is also the first Hero model that comes with the capability to live-stream built right into it. The device is compatible with the ios and Android GoPro and Quik apps, and this enables you to transfer images to your phone, capture portrait-orientation images and upload it straight to Instagram stories as well as add music, effects and stickers. Apart from these amazing new additions, the new TimeWarp feature is also a whole lot fun to play with and the image quality remains solid. With the inclusion of the very effective HyperSmooth stabilisation, the refreshed UI and portrait options make the GoPro Hero 7 Black one of the best action cameras you can buy right now! ✤

AMAL SHINE With the award-winning and leading voice of fashion and lifestyle in the UAE capital, Amal Salameh FLORAL WORKSHOPS: ESPOIR FLOWER BOUTIQUE Whether you are a millennial wanting a boho effect for your home, a busy mum looking for a sophisticated arrangement for a family gathering or perhaps you're looking for a team building activity? Look no further as flower workshops are the ideal place to start or refine your skills and are good for mental health too. I recently hosted a floral workshop with Espoir Flowers in their beautiful boutique at Rosewood Abu Dhabi and invited guests to an afternoon tea to create their very own bespoke flower box to take home. Besides the perks of learning the tricks of the trade from Espoir’s experienced florists, an added benefit to taking part in a hands-on floral event is that plant related activities have been proven to promote health and wellness. Spending time around flowers and working hands-on with them is a great way to get in some bonding time and reap the rewards of horticultural therapy. Much like yoga, or an obstacle course, flower design presents its own set of unique challenges and triumphs and you will be amazed at what you can accomplish by unlocking your own creativity on the skills demonstrated by the workshop leader. Combining fine aromas with uplifting colours and an abundance of texture, flower arranging is a beautifully-calm and creative hobby that challenges the mind. I believe that workshops and courses that teach and inspire anything can bring great value. The purpose of my workshop with Espoir Flower Boutique was very much a bonding and motivational event for my guests, after they had all completed their designs, I presented them with personalised tags which have their names engraved on them along with a motivational message – Flowers are colourful, just like we can all be if we let ourselves bloom. When you feel free and happy, just imagine the potential in you. When the timing is right and you have finally realised you are ready to blossom, how incredible life can be? We are fresh, we are colourful, and we are blooming. Believe you can be this decorative flower that rejuvenates itself and brings joy to others. Believe you are growing into a garden with empowering women and we are blooming together. We are all ready to peak and blossom in the right time with help from one another. So go, and grow your garden.
Yours fashionably, Amal 78

e arrive at Spaccanapoli when it’s lunchtime – around 1pm – and, honestly, we’re surprised (and delighted) to see that the restaurant is buzzing with diners having a leisurely lunch or business catch up. This is good to see. If the restaurant has a steady flow of guests for lunch, it must be doing something right. Well, we were about to find out. We head to a cosy nook and quickly sink into our seats, it’s so easy to feel right at home here, another trait of Italian eating; a comfortable atmosphere. The venue is pretty, simple and has a very rustic feel. There’s an elegant ambience with stone walls, intimate lighting, and beautiful dining tables, all resembling a rural, family-style trattoria. There’s even a fireplace, which helps to set the tone of feeling like you’re dining with family in what is undoubtedly one of the most charming restaurants we’ve had the pleasure of coming back to in Abu Dhabi. As we tuck into the first of the delicious signature dishes: Mozzarella di bufala al coccio (oven baked mozzarella in rich tomato sauce), which tastes exceptional, we begin to understand what makes Spacannapoli a winning formula on the Abu Dhabi culinary scene. The restaurant aims to create its take on traditional dishes and highlight Italian tastes with good, fresh ingredients and authentic condiments. Basically, if you want flavourful Italian fare, in the heart of the city, this is the place to find it. The Capesante alla piastra, purea di patate al tartufo, porro fritto croccante – try and say that all really fast – is a succulent dish of pan seared scallops, truffle mashed potato and crispy fried leeks. Scallops are a particular favourite of ours, and we’ve had so many great examples over the years that we’re something of a tough judge. Fortunately, we judged these to be excellent! Melt-in-your-mouth tender and extremely tasty. A beautiful combination of ingredients, each component on the plate holds its own. The scallops are cooked perfectly whilst the truffle mash and crispy leeks add a dynamic texture to every bite. Highly recommended! The Insalata di caprine, noci, mele, spinaci freschi (Goat cheese, walnuts, apple, fresh baby spinach, mix lettuce with balsamic dressing) is super fresh and each ingredient manages to shine through; the combo of earthy and zesty flavours takes our taste buds on a ride. If you’re looking to start your meal on something light yet satisfying – this is the dish that will do the trick. 82

It wouldn’t be lunch at an Italian restaurant without trying the Margherita pizza – one of the restaurant’s most popular menu items. Oozing with cheese on a base sent from the food Gods, this is the pizza of every dream. Just order it and taste for yourself. And finally, a homemade Tiramisu presented in a simple and classic way, but easily one of the best examples we’ve tried to date – rich, creamy and just enough, but not too much, kick from the coffee flavour. Just exquisite! We were thoroughly impressed by the quality of the dishes we sampled at Spaccanapoli – it’s no wonder that all of these are the restaurant’s signature offerings. As any lover of Italian food knows, the cuisine goes best with beverage pairings, and knowing this, it’d be hard not to order a glass of your chosen sip from the venue’s cellar – adding a sophisticated touch to your dining experience. ✤

MARKET FRESH Situated amidst verdant manicured gardens on a premium stretch of beachfront lies the Saadiyat Rotana Resort and Villas. aking on the brown, yellow and orange hues of the desert dunes as a colour palette for the property, guests are presented at the entrance of the hotel with sand from all seven Emirates, inlaid within glass panels in the floor. Saadiyat Rotana easily makes for the most impressive Rotana property in the UAE and marks a step into the luxury market for the brand. When the resort announced the launch of its Friday 'Market Brunch' at all-day-dining restaurant SimSim, we don't think Abu Dhabi diners were quite prepared for what was to transpire. The culinary team at the Saadiyat Rotana has clearly been watching the scene carefully, taking the idea of the international buffet and running with it, while also introducing some unique touches that result in one of the best new brunches to launch in the capital for some time. The market feel begins from the moment you enter, with wooden tressels and crates loaded with organic fruit and vegetables. This visual assault of colour is utilised for more than just thematics and the fresh produce can be purchased to take home, a novel idea and one that really appears to have resonated with diners. Inside the restaurant itself, an international buffet overwhelms guests with everything from the expected salads and cold cuts, through to a makeyour-own hummus station, sumptuous Indian corner and an Asian section featuring dim sum, spicy noodles and a Peking duck that is bound to delight. The carefully constructed sushi comes in a variety of flavours and is sure to please, as is the expansive boulangerie and bakery replete with freshly baked bread, burrata and a good selection of European cheeses. The brunch is too large to be contained within the confines of Sim Sim, spilling out into the gardens, where you'll find the majority of beverage stations and the BBQ. Arabic grills are tender and well seasoned, but it's the spinning metal disc, rotating hypnotically over the flame and containing the slow-cooked brisket that is the unique aspect of this particular brunch. The European market concept is executed well with the seafood market making for a popular choice where guests are invited to pick from the iced fish and live crustaceans before taking them outside to be grilled. Lobsters, crab and whole sea bass are available and while cooking takes a little longer than expected, it's worth the wait when the items do finally arrive at the table. Desserts are a visual treat displayed between vintage luggage and a gramophone. The pastry team impress with some masterful creations such as cakes shaped like Coca Cola bottles and giant 86

cheeseburgers. Fresh gelato, a chocolate fountain and a tiramisu cake are of note and should not be missed. A live-band brings energy to proceedings with a repertoire of popular hits that's bound to get the crowd moving and as expected from the Rotana brand, the Market Brunch is very family-friendly with a kids area provided by My First Gym on the grassy lawns. The Market Brunch is a brunch that covers a lot of bases and it’s easy to see why it’s creating such a stir in the capital. The price point is at the upper levels of Abu Dhabi brunching but is reflective of the quality and vast selection on offer. We would recommend springing for the premium package which not only elevates the beverages but also adds a touch of brunch decadence via oysters, caviar and craft hops, located in a shaded courtyard that can only be accessed by those with a premium wristband. Saadiyat Rotana can happily throw their hat into the ring as a contender for best buffet brunch in town; an impressive feat that marks another triumph for Rotana and this beautiful new beachfront property. ✤

T
he Abu Dhabi Edition opened with a bang towards the end of last year and brought with it an array of new restaurants. The fact that these restaurants were going to be signature venues by British Chef Tom Aikens was the icing on the cake for the already much-anticipated hotel. Aiken is known for being the youngest chef to achieve a Michelin Star and on this particular visit to the hotel we are visiting his Oak Room steakhouse. There is a lot to like about this restaurant before you’ve even sat down to eat. The hidden door reveals a sophisticated interior of dark timber accented by low lighting. The venue plays classic British rock n roll which is the perfect touch to give the restaurant a fun vibe. Large, split pictures of British rock n roll stars of days gone by adorn the walls; and tables are simple with small vases of red roses. But the main focus at the Oak Room is the meat, the restaurant has its own butcher and there is a butchery display in the restaurant behind a cool glass room. The menu offers up loads of great steak options as you would expect but there are lots of good seafood options also and some tasty sounding salads. To start, we order the scallops and the beetroot salad but before these arrive comes the bread; delicious, freshly made sourdough with marmite butter which is excellent. Both entrees were good, the scallops perfectly cooked with delicate cauliflower and a lovely dressing. The beetroot salad was also very good and totally unexpected, wafer thin slices of beetroot were flawlessly presented with goats curd and the flavours worked really nicely. We all know what we were here for though; the steak. The butcher ran us through the steak options, and one that really peaked our interest was the 400g Spanish Rubia Striploin. This cut comes from a retired dairy cow which is unusual but highly recommended. It comes served bone in for maximum flavour and is a rich and complex taste. We opted for sides of mustard and wagyu fat chips to accompany it. This meat really stands out on its own and we really enjoyed every bite. It is nice to see a steak restaurant offering

something different. We also tried the 250g Australian Black Onyx which was also extremely good and we tried it with creamed spinach and a red vino sauce. There are also loads of great desserts on offer, all classic British dishes such as apple pie, Eaton mess and sticky date pudding to end your meal. Be sure to sit at the bar for a welcome drink with its beautiful crystal glassware and clever bartenders. This restaurant is a welcome treat to the Abu Dhabi dining scene with friendly and knowledgeable staff, fantastic food and chic surroundings. ✤

JET-SET LIFE Reduce fatigue and stimulate circulation as you allow your body’s internal clock to adjust to its new time zone with Remède Spa’s Jet Leg Recovery treatment. Angela Beitz visits The St. Regis Abu Dhabi to discover the brand new addition…
T
here’s nothing nicer than a great spa treatment and allowing yourself some well-earned me time, but sometimes you need to go a step further with your treatment especially when you’ve come off a long haul flight and this is where the Jet Lag Recovery Treatment at Remède Spa comes in. The Remède Spa brand is well known in the capital and just recently picked up two accolades at our first FACT Spa & Wellness Awards in Abu Dhabi. The stunning spa is a real sanctuary for guests looking to unwind in one of the 11 treatment rooms, the wet area or the relaxation lounge. The 75-minute treatment is the ultimate in jet lag recovery and acts to boost your face and body to get you feeling fresh in your new time zone. This treatment package includes a 30-minute customised back massage, 30-minute hydrating facial - a refreshing boost for the skin, ideal for pre- and post-travel to deeply hydrate and revitalise - and a 15-minute foot massage. I sip a kiwi juice in the serene reception area and I’m then shown to the lovely changing room. The décor of the spa follows the same theme of the rest of hotel with lots of beautiful white marble along with gold and art deco touches. I slip into a robe and slippers and am shown to the treatment room which is beautifully-decorated and super spacious. There are three different oils to choose from for the massage and since the body is very tight and stiff, I really need to unwind and opt for the muscle relaxation oil. I ask for deep tissue and my back is worked on to release tension. A great deal of attention is paid to the very sore upper back and neck where there is a lot of pain. By the end of the massage, I feel totally relaxed and all the tension in my body has gone which is a huge relief. We move onto the facial which is personalised to suit my dry and tired skin, using products from Elemis which feel fresh and hydrating. My face skin is triple-cleansed using a very rich creamy cleanser and then we move onto exfoliation. The therapist uses a very gentle setting as my skin in very fine and sensitive. The therapist then performs some extractions to make sure all pores are clean and then gives me an uplifting facial massage before applying a thick hydrating mask. To complete the treatment, my feet are massaged for 15 minutes and I leave feeling uplifted, fresh and relaxed. i continue this state of bliss in the relaxation room with a cup of tea looking out over the Corniche. This treatment is perfect for jet lag but also if you generally need a boost and your skin and body will definitely thank you for it. ✤

HIT REFRESH Angela Beitz tries the perfect massage to rejuvenate the body at Sense Spa, Rosewood Abu Dhabi.
A
fter the festive activities of December, January is the perfect time to wind down with a quality massage and some much deserved down time. I’m trying the Signature Massage at Rosewood Abu Dhabi’s Sense Spa. It just won Best City Spa at our FACT Spa & Wellness Awards. Their collection of therapeutic massages offers a unique wellness treatment created just for each individual which I love. The Signature Massage uses a therapeutic blend of massage techniques while using smooth, heated rosewood sticks throughout the massage to increase the effectiveness of the experience. They use their own signature oil, infused with custom-blended Arabian botanicals of frankincense and oudh, which promises to instantly relax your muscles and promote your overall health and wellbeing. I love this spa as they’ve managed to create a space which is luxurious yet understated and is run by super professional staff. I sip on a welcome drink as I fill out a consultation form that will help the therapist to recognise my massage needs. I change into a robe and slippers and am ushered into the super chic treatment rooms that Sense Spa has to offer. I talk through my concerns with the therapist
and explain that I have some upper back and neck tension and she assures me that this massage will help me to unwind. The massage starts on my back by first relaxing me with a medium pressure using no oil then working up to a very deep pressure with the warmed oil to relieve pain and then continuing on. The frankincense and oudh oil that is used smells incredible and it’s a nice change from other massage oils. The thoughtful therapist has also worked shea butter into the massage as she notes I have dry skin. Particular attention is paid to my back and neck as requested and I’m already feeling super relaxed. My legs are then massaged and are also stretched to really try and release pain in the hips and other joints. The same is repeated on the calves which are also tight. The hot Rosewood stick is then rubbed all over me to further relieve tension, much like a Hot Stone Massage. Then the treatment moves onto the front of the body, focusing on the stomach region and then a deeply soothing head massage send me into a light slumber. This treatment is unbelievably relaxing and really works to help all my sore spots. It’s great to have a treatment that is specifically tailored to the individual and you’ll leave feeling refreshed and light. ✤

Charlie Grainger Meat Sommelier, The Abu Dhabi Edition
How did you become a Meat Sommelier? I started my career in butchery ten years ago, and I've progressed gradually to bring me to this special role I hold today. After experiencing butchery at school when I was thirteen, I found it struck a chord with me, and so went on to find myself a traditional English apprenticeship in whole animal butchery. From there, I excelled in the field and completed what was meant to be a two-year apprenticeship in six months due to my eagerness to learn. From then on, I gradually progressed from junior butcher to butchery manager, going on to train three apprentices of my own. British chef Tom Aikens became aware of my work, and contacted me with the opportunity to come and 98

join Oak Room, as Meat Sommelier, and the rest is history. Tell us three things that make Oak Room special... Firstly the concept of having myself, a southern UK butcher and my counterpart, Ryan Cook as our Chef de Cuisine, works really well. Having us both working in partnership creates a really different dining experience. Ryan is the youngest Four Rosette Chef in the UK, from Yorkshire. The combination of his skill in the kitchen, and my knowledge of butchery, makes Oak Room a truly unique experience. Secondly, the design of the restaurant is incredible, with the live Butchery Room and vintage rock ‘n' roll imagery, it's really atmospheric and a beautiful place for a meal. Thirdly, the staff is
what makes Oak Room stand out. The team is fantastic, all vibrant characters with fantastic knowledge of the menu. What would be the most interesting facts about your role? For me, the chance to educate guests is the most interesting fact. Living in a society where food has become more of a commodity than a luxury, I have been given this incredible opportunity to educate guests about why we should eat meat and how it will affect us as people, as well as our health. This interaction really is the best and most interesting part of my role. When you come to Oak Room you're not only going to enjoy a beautiful meal, you're going to learn something new and, most importantly, have fun!
