If you're brave enough to say goodbye, life will reward you with a new hello. - Paulo Coelho
A
s we enter another month of precautionary measures to tackle the global pandemic, Abu Dhabi is stepping up its digital game and helping people all over the city get their arts and culture fix online. For May, we celebrate the museums and institutions who have turned their galleries, exhibitions and entertainment offerings to digital platforms for you to enjoy from the comfort of your home. Turn to p21 and take your pick. We also caught up with the artist behind From A To Me to talk about creative expression through covid-19 (p32). This is followed by a beautiful round-up of some of the best art that we found on Instagram done by people across the globe, expressing themselves through quarantine days (p34). We’ve picked 20 podcasts to get through social distancing (p42) and we bring you some hopeful and light-hearted experiences of Life in Quarantine with UAE professionals whose lives have been turned into WFH routines like many of us. Check out what they have to say about living through corona, starting p46. To top that off, Abu Dhabi’s top hotels and restaurants have stepped up to the plate and created some of the most delicious delivery and takeaway menus for Iftar. Tuck into classics as well as more innovative choices and make your selection starting p14. We’ve got selfcare guides, wellness tips and your monthly fashion, beauty, tech and entertainment fix. May also brings with it a host of new beginnings. After seven incredible years at the helm of this fabulous lifestyle brand, I’ll be passing the reins onto a new editor. I would like to first and foremost thank each and every one of you who has picked up a copy of FACT magazine, followed us on social media, entered our competitions, voted in your thousands during our awards campaigns, and supported both myself and FACT throughout this wonderful journey. A quick look back through the years, I’d like to rewind and highlight some of my favourite moments… In 2014, I met and interviewed my high-school crush – the one and only Craig David himself; in 2015, a work trip to Amman allowed me to score my highest number of steps ever reached in a day – thanks to a visit to Petra; in 2016, I really lived the best life in Bahrain with pool days, cultural and food tours, family visits – this is a country that will always have my heart; in 2017, things really started to take off for us regionally and we launched the Dubai edition; with 2018 came more travel opportunities and the once-in-alifetime trip to the Maldives, and by 2019, I had moved to this beautiful city only to have some of life’s most memorable experiences with the most amazing people. 2020? Well, it has a lot to live up to. But, I leave my role with tons of memories and an Apple Cloud account filled with thousands of photos that will make me smile every time I scroll through them. Get ready, because the new team is taking things to a whole new level. For one last time, it’s been the best ride, friends. Wishing you all a more hopeful, healthy and happy 2020 going ahead. ☺

HORNS OF HOPE The world’s maritime sector is standing in solidarity with communities around the world battling the coronavirus pandemic by joining Abu Dhabi Ports’ initiative “Horns of Hope”.

IN A WORLD-FIRST CAMPAIGN, all ships in harbours around the world will sound their horns in 15-second bursts each evening in recognition and support of the maritime, healthcare, and critical sector personnel who continue to work in mission-critical roles to address the impact of covid-19. The initiative which was launched at the end of March received a welcome boost when both the International Maritime Organisation – the 174-member-state-strong United Nations specialised agency with responsibility for the safety and security of shipping – and the Arab Sea Ports Federation formally committed their members to the cause. Captain Mohamed Juma Al Shamisi, Abu Dhabi Ports Group CEO, said: “It is deeply humbling and touching to witness the wide regional and global response to our call to sound the Horns of Hope. This initiative spreads hope around the world and highlights the vital importance of our maritime and logistics lifelines at a time of crisis,” he continues. “We are proud of all essential critical infrastructure workers – administrative and core operations employees who are still working on ground, and around the clock, to drive business continuity, both in Abu Dhabi’s ports as well as all teams working in all ports across the world. We highly appreciate all the government efforts to face the Covid-19 consequences, and its strong commitment to support all business sectors.” In the short time since covid-19 was declared a global pandemic, cases continue to soar. More than half the world’s student population is not attending school, offices are working remotely when possible, borders have been closed, airlines have been grounded, and lives disrupted. However, port workers, mariners, equipment operators and administration staff are continuing to maintain the steady movement of cargo in the face of emergency. Their hard work and dedication help guarantee that supply lines remain open, ensuring that shelves remain stocked and hospitals secure needed medical supplies. Abdulla Al Muharrami, Head of the Regional Office of Arab Sea Ports Federation, said: “Arab sea ports are the region’s lifeline to the world; they are the single greatest source of our supplies, both raw materials and finished goods, from Cairo to Fujairah and Kuwait City to Jeddah. “Across all Arab sea ports, we are honoured to sound our horns of hope in unison to show our genuine thanks for the efforts of so many, in so many different areas of service, who continue to overcome the daily challenges presented by covid-19 to fully undertake their professional roles, so that the rest of us may remain safely at home,” he added. The Horns of Hope campaign expects to see vessels within the world’s port harbours signalling solidarity by sounding their horns each day at 6.30 for the remainder of the ongoing global battle against covid-19. ✤

FROM A TO ME IN LIGHT OF THE NEW LIFESTYLE WE’VE ALL HAD TO ADOPT, MANY ARTISTS AROUND THE WORLD ARE BRINGING SOME POSITIVITY INTO OUR DAILY SCROLLING. FACT CAUGHT UP WITH ALAA ODEH, A.K.A FROM A TO ME, AN ILLUSTRATOR WHO TRULY BELIEVES THAT A UNITED FRONT WILL GET US THROUGH THIS TESTING TIME.
Hi Alaa! Tell us more about your journey into art… Hello! I started “from a to me” with pretty much a diary and a pencil. At first, I felt the need to vent, and although I have been practicing art in general for at least half of my life, it still wasn’t serving its purpose for me. Throughout my life, I think I always searched for the deeper meaning of things, to try to make sense of the events that happen in life. I am still learning how to find peace amidst it all and I believe this is the key for happiness; finding your inner peace. Years ago, I bought a notebook, which I thought looked distinct because there is a funny senseless doodle on its cover with the quote “things are never as bad as they seem, so dream, dream, dream”, and I started filling it with doodles and writings of pretty much anything or everything on a daily basis, which became a habit. I believe my diary helped me keep my emotions in check. Then month after month, the notebooks started piling up, and whenever I felt overwhelmed, I would take a self-reflection break, look at my stack of notebooks, and re-evaluate my thoughts and choices through time. That technique helped me to keep going and growing, it kept my emotions in check, and stimulated my creativity. and so, it happened! I have to point out that I only realised my flow or what those diaries meant to me a year and half into practice. I think that can be interpreted in many ways, but I’ll just say, that’s how it worked for me. That’s why “from a to me” means more to me than a slogan or a logo, it’s a symbol of my journey, a play on words from a to z and how art kind of got to me. What is it about creating and viewing art that grips you? Well, my mother, God bless her, studied graphic design in the 80s and she has been an art teacher for more than 25 years. So, I grew up with art. I grew up with libraries lined in art books and supplies wall to wall, hearing stories of artists and styles and schools and techniques. I believe that art is culture. Its value is tremendous in its impact over our lifestyle, behavior, perspective and understanding of the world. And besides the general aesthetical contribution to society, it’s also therapeutic. It’s simply essential. We all express ourselves and contribute to our communities one way or another, this is my way of self-expression. 32
fact magazine
A few of your current pieces are drawn in relation to the current global covid-19 pandemic. Why was it important for you to make something creative during this uncertain time? I felt obligated to raise awareness regarding the seriousness of the situation through my art, now more than ever, especially since a lot of people were still taking the subject so lightly! Living in the Middle East, we have been exposed to news about the wars in Palestine, Iraq, Syria, the infinitely escalating political and economic crisis in Lebanon, and Egypt, the constant battles of women’s rights in Saudi Arabia, and everything in between. Not to mention the drama in other parts of the world, it has kept the region on this constant disrupted dysfunctional rollercoaster and everyone was fending for themselves. However, now it is exceptional how, for the first time, the fight is not about power or borders, it’s about the survival of humanity. And although we are practicing social distancing, the world has never felt more tightly knit, it’s extraordinary. I understand how everyone is feeling, for once I think we are a united front globally, and it’s time that we practice conscious veracious habits and mental awareness. We will get through this eventually, I know we will, but we still need to learn – as cheesy as it sounds – how to dance in the rain!
ARTS Q&A •
may reflect a certain emotion or personal situation. I don’t usually linger on the reasons behind an illustration because my intentions and perspectives change. And something that meant one thing to me today could mean something else, or even nothing, to me tomorrow. Also, people relate differently, each person can interpret a piece differently, reflecting their own experiences and thoughts at the time. How has social media affected you as an artist - has the impact been positive or otherwise? Mostly positive. Yes, it can be overwhelming, but I find inspiration, I gain valuable friendships, and I put myself out there. The encouragement and love I receive is empowering and motivating. What is your advice for young budding artists? I would like to share the same kind of reminders I keep telling myself: never compare yourself or your work with others, don’t put yourself down - perfect does not exist, art blocks are just a phase, no matter how long it takes let it pass on its own. And, finally, change is part of growth so have courage and faith, always.✤
GO: FOLLOW @FROMATOME ON INSTAGRAM TO KEEP UP WITH ALL THE LATEST FROM ALAA.
What has your experience of social distancing taught you? I have to say, I am not a stranger to social distancing; I’m an introvert, I love working at home and I meditate on my own a lot. I take time to reflect on myself as often as I can, and I try to do my “spring cleaning” from the inside out on a regular basis. But this time, external forces are making me do it, and although I miss my family and friends terribly, I am definitely making the best of this situation. Tell us about some of the materials, tools and techniques that you use in your artwork… I have experimented with all sorts of art mediums throughout the years, I enjoy arts and crafts in general and acrylic on canvas occasionally when I miss the mess. but I particularly enjoy working on the iPad pro. I think the undo button is a revelation, and the fact that I can apply an unlimited amount of artwork and store them on a cloud and never have to worry about space is a blessing! Is there a message or feeling that you’re trying to convey through your art? Some illustrations I create for a specific cause or event. Others fact magazine

• LIFE IN QUARANTINE
MY LIFE IN QUARANTINE… As we step into another month of staying safe and social distancing, FACT asked some of the UAE’s very own residents to share their experience of living through a global pandemic in 2020… NATASHA HATHERALL Founder & CEO, TishTash I can only describe covid-19 as an emotional rollercoaster. I had sleepless nights worrying about losing my business. I suffered anxiety stepping foot out of my door and touching everything with my elbow fearing for my health. I wondered if I’d ever see my family again. But I also watched the sunset every day from my terrace with newfound awe and amazement. I wore no make-up and my skin glowed. We were all so much kinder to each other. I treasured my daily Zoom calls with my family in locations across the world and I looked at everything with new eyes and appreciation.
RANIA KFOURY Director of Communication, The Qode Despite the undeniable impact and repercussions that many of us will have to face post the global pandemic, I choose to focus on the positive. On a professional level, it has definitely propelled my team and I to become more resourceful and further explore technology as part of the effective work solutions post-covid. It also contributed to accelerating the digital transformation in communication for our region and forced brands to think in digital terms more than ever, definitely a learning opportunity. On a personal level, social distancing has presented me with the much-desired time to spend with my teenage son, soon to go away to university. It forced me to slow down, get out of the race and look at what really matters. Despite the chaos and uncertainty that we are all facing at the moment, I am at peace knowing that having no control over the situation, the universe is allowing me to recharge, do what I enjoy most besides my work. I read, listen to music and dance more. I work out with my family, go through old photos, cook better food, meditate, things I otherwise don’t have the time to enjoy much of. Once this is over, and it will be over, I will resume life with a recharged tank, a different perspective and renewed gratitude for things we take for granted. 46

SARAH CURTIS Co-founder, POP Communications Life during social distancing and the lockdown has certainly been different. Myself, my husband, my brother and our dog have been practicing social distancing and working from home for over four weeks now, which is crazy to think it’s been that long. Being in the UAE I would say is probably one of the best places to be during this time because they implemented this early and I feel safe. Positive impacts I’ve experienced personally during this time include learning to slow down a bit and not feel guilty for it. Being the co-founder of a busy communications agency, I am so used to juggling a lot all at once and work never ending. So, I am using this time to relax if I want to relax, read if I want to, spend several hours wasted looking at the internet if I want and not worrying about it. Professionally, work has naturally slowed during this time, we have experienced it across all our clients, however we are using this time to do a lot of business admin that usually gets pushed aside during business season, such as; re-working our company profile and company processes, and implementing a new social media strategy for our own pages - to name a few things that are keeping us and the team busy! Things that are currently helping me get through this time personally are; making sure I still wake up early during the week days, and getting ‘ready’ for the day. I make my bed every morning, which I feel helps kick-off the day right! I make sure I take coffee and lunch breaks as I normally would, and do a work out daily – this has actually been a real-life saver, even if it’s just a 20-minute gentle stretch class found on YouTube. Doing some form of exercise daily (during the week) has really helped keep me mentally on track. Business wise, I am so thankful to have an amazing business partner and an amazing team. The support we have had from our team during this time has really made me so thankful for them and I can see their commitment and loyalty – it makes me so excited for the future! Tips for work - I think it’s so important to have someone who understands what you do to talk to daily, vent out any frustrations as well as guide and support each other. I recommend checking in with your colleagues/friends/ business partners daily. What I’ve learnt is we are all in this together and we need to support each other and it’s ok to have off days. fact magazine

BHOOMIKA GHAGHADA Co-Founder and Lead Copywriter, STREET FZC Typically, I’m a hurricane on a weekday, blowing through my todo list. Quarantine has made many people and businesses — including my ad agency — slow down. Settling into this quiet has driven home how critical community is. These are members of your family or chosen family, who make you more self-aware and explore with you: swapping recipes, turning an acquaintance into a friend, or having virtual plant-potting parties. They contribute to your happiness and revive your creativity. So, for the rest of this quarantine, I’ll be cocooned in here, with my people.
SAMAH ELWAGIE Co-Director, MVM & Co. When going through any major change in life, it’s going to be difficult to adapt. We’re currently living in unprecedented times and it’s crucial to try to make the most of it in any positive way. Quarantine for me, as for any other individual, has been quite challenging, however, I’ve been trying to utilise this time to really reflect. On a personal level, I’ve actually had the time to work on my art which I was extremely passionate about when I was younger and have been yearning to get back into for a long time. I find it very therapeutic particularly when I’ve had a rough day. Not being with family and friends is also hard. For some strange reason, I find myself connecting with them even more I now find us constantly catching up and being there for each other more than ever. Having the right support system makes a world of a difference and I’m truly blessed to have incredible friends who have been there for me when I’ve felt overwhelmed. In terms of business, as with any start-up, it’s natural to feel a huge shift there. My business partner and I have been utilizing this time not only to support our current clients as much as we can but also focusing on new business strategies. We also find that during times like this, being able to give back to the community is crucial and trying to provide other businesses that may be struggling with the support they need. Although this pandemic has had an extremely negative impact on the economy across many industries, as a business owner you must learn to change with the current and find new ways to adapt your business model. In the past, life was so fastpaced and time was truly a luxury. Being able to find some form of downtime though has been somewhat of a blessing in order to allow me to really reflect and try to look at where I see myself in the next few years. 48

SHIMAA ELSAYED Communications Director, The Qode I think that the Covid 19 crisis has taught me the art of accepting difficult situations as opposed to my natural response which has always been resistance. It was Eckart Tole, in his book A New Earth, who first introduced me to the concept of making peace with ‘what is’. Personally, it has been about learning to surrender to the global situation and making peace with the fact that there isn’t much we can do about this pandemic - except stay home in the hope that it is contained. It is about acknowledging that the current situation is not unique to me and definitely not a personal challenge. Shifting my perception from ‘my’ situation to ‘our’ situation has been key in diluting the stress of it all. Time spent worrying about something that we have very little control over is simply time and energy wasted. Working from home has been a blessing in disguise as it has given me the opportunity to spend time doing a lot of the simple things that long hours in the office often prevented me from doing. It has given me the chance to better connect with family and loved ones and also a time to plan for the future, without the constant noise that was once associated with our lives before Corona. Ironically, this time has been peaceful for me and a time when I have excelled spiritually in many ways. I have been careful not to be too hard on myself with productivity and work out targets, instead gave myself the chance to slow down for once.
KELLY LUNDBERG Style Expert & Business Mentor Whilst this has been a far from ideal situation for anyone, the “one day when I have time,” has become a reality and I am embracing it with ‘no excuses’. My day still starts the same, I wake up at the same time – 6am, meditate then work out. There is less pressure to rush to emails first thing, so I spend time on my balcony writing in my journal. I am upskilling and doing a great online course, plus my work mentoring is also all online so I am still able to service my clients. I did think by now I would be climbing the walls, but knowing that everyone else is in the same position– keeps me going. fact magazine

LEE RYAN Captain, Adidas Runners Dubai & Abu Dhabi Where to start, this time has been testing for sure, my wife and I both work full time and we have two little girls aged three and five. As you can imagine, it has been a stressful juggling act, with my wife being a teacher and my girls needing to stick to a virtual learning schedule. We are making it work as a team, our little #hometeam. We have always been an active family, this is one mantra we are trying to maintain during this time for everyone’s wellbeing; adapting to new challenges in new spaces and ensuring we keep it fun, always! We are also clearly focused on using this time to upskill. Through the adidas #hometeam initiative, I took on my most mentally and physically challenging runs to date over the weekend by running 100km in my garden, a space that is only 30m end-to-end in 13hrs 50mins 42secs. Stay strong, we are all in this together!
VIX MACHIN Account Manager, Q Communications Well, to say life has been a little different would be an understatement, but honestly, I think the first few weeks WFH were mainly spent adjusting to the new #StayHome lifestyle. Now, a month in, I definitely feel like I've got myself into a good routine, which is definitely important. I was missing my classes at UnderdogBoxn but they were amazing and posted classes for free on social, so I get up in the morning and do that, coffee, breakfast and to the work station to crack on with the day. I think there is an expectation for everyone to learn something new during this time, but personally I believe it’s a gift of time to reconnect with the things that you've always loved, for me, that's been art and I've really enjoyed and embraced having more time to paint.
DR. FIONA COWIE GP Injector, Dermalase Clinic (Al Wasl) Covid-19 has made a massive impact on all our lives in the past few weeks but not all of it has been bad. For me, it has given me time to spend with my daughter which as a busy doctor I don’t usually have. We chat more, cook together, and watch movies as well as keeping in touch with all of our family in the UK on Zoom. I have also had time to undertake online medical education courses which is hard to fit in usually. Colleagues from work keep morale up by keeping in touch daily via group WhatsApp and we also have group online meetings scheduled to chat about what we have been doing in quarantine and new ideas for the business. Our supervisors also keep us updated regularly on work issues. Quarantine has its challenges if you enjoy being outdoors but can equally be seen as a positive time to bond with family and colleagues and to all work together towards a better future. 50

MIMI NICKLIN Author & Empathetic Influencer It feels like we have been inside forever, yet the days themselves fly by. As an author, I have found far more time to write and to create than I ever have before, although the inspiration you so often find in humanity, in all its mundane glory, is certainly missing. Creativity has always been known to flourish in adverse scenarios and I have found the power of contagious storytelling amongst the fear of a contagion outside our walls. For that I am grateful. When the doors finally open again, I wonder often whether we will find the same world that we left behind?
MICHE WHITEHOUSE Regional Brand Manager MENA, Lush Cosmetics Am I allowed to say I am loving quarantine? Working in retail our business came to a screeching halt overnight, aside from our online business which skyrocketed, our saving grace. I am now working part-time from home, at first, I was terrified and now I am using my extra time to get back to doing things that make me feel whole. It’s rare these days you see me without a facemask or a hair mask on, sitting on my balcony and enjoying my time, having zero commitments and slowing down. Personally, and professionally, if we can survive quarantine, we can survive anything!
RACHAEL LYNN Author I’ve had time to define my values – family, friendship, personal growth – and weigh my plans. Are they aligned or am I trying to prove myself to strangers? I’ve shifted how I show up on social media, how my assistant views the business, and my next project (a journaling course) which feels so expansive. Time connecting with family is more precious than ever and each call I aim to talk about how we’re feeling, not just quick check ins. It’s like we’re all growing up together, and when we see each other, we’ll be even more bonded because of all this. fact magazine

It Is What It Is
By Thundercat
By Dua Lipa
She made her mark in the pop game with her debut in 2017. Three years on, Dua Lipa is not showing any signs of slowing down. With her second album Future Nostalgia she is bringing bold, irresistible hits that bring out your funky side! And even though we are now living in a post-nightclub world, the fusion of disco and ruthlessly efficient contemporary pop is just perfect to dance away your worries in your living room. Highlights include pre-album bangers Don’t Start Now and Physical — songs that tackle empowerment at its finest. The grandiose Boys Will Be Boys is a funk-free flip that tells about what it’s like to be a girl and having to avoid confrontation from men. With lyrics like “…but girls will be women” she empowers again and stands against stereotypical “boy-behaviour”. Giving us feel-good vibes and dance tracks when we need them the most, Future Nostalgia is absolutely the strongest album thus far in Dua Lipa’s musical repertoire.
Bassist extraordinaire Thundercat aka Stephen Bruner returns with more fleet-fingered jams and abstracted musings. With a perfectly matching title It Is What It Is, is about love, loss, and the ups and downs that come with life. Album hit Fair Chance comes close, with its weightless keyboards, gentle drums, and heartbroken hook about loving someone even though they’re not around — and Ty Dolla $ign’s guest spot just adds more feels. How I Feel provides a subtle bass melody, lovely bell plinks, and a magnetic synth line and Funny Thing details the intimate joys of partying with your special one. Sparkling with inventive songwriting, chunky production and pervasive good vibes, but also embracing difference and accepting life’s highs and lows — It Is What It Is is all the melodic joy that we need right now.
A decade ago, five “chosen” teenage heroes defeated an evil villain, known as the Dark One, and saved the human race. Now, the no-longer-teenagers are famous celebrities, but unlike the rest of the world they still recall the days of endless fear and struggle coping with the reality of what it means to be a hero. A new trauma hits the Chosen Ones when they discover that the Dark One never really left.

FOR A SMART & STYLISH LIFESTYLE
The Fitbit Versa 2 Special Edition is not only a perfect fitness tracker, but also comes with some crazy-good smartwatch perks. FACT tests it out…
F
itbit has refined its best-selling smartwatch, Fitbit Versa, into a much-improved Versa 2, and here is the difference: while health and activity tracking takes centre stage, the next generation-wearable comes with some amazing extra perks. One important feature Fitbit has added to the Versa 2 is an always-on display option — now you can just glance to see what you need during workouts or when your hands are full. Talking about the screen, another major improvement worth mentioning is the new Amoled touchscreen, which is protected by Gorilla Glass 3. The Amoled screen is designed to increase the function of brightness contrast on the interface, making it easier to navigate. Fitbit also enables an excellent battery life, up to five days with standard use, extending your enjoyment to the fullest. We’ve been using ours during quarantine to keep track of at-home fitness, and all of these incredible features have been a real bonus. An improved lightweight design is another perk. The smartwatch feels solid, lightweight, and well-crafted, while the silicone band that is included hugs the wrist too, making the Versa 2 really comfortable to wear. For next-level convenience, Fitbit’s new model debuts an on-device microphone, which enables voiceto-text. Get on-screen answers to your questions and more with Amazon’s Alexa. Built-in Spotify also elevates your day and allows you to listen to your favourite playlists and podcasts while you’re on a run or working out. Talking about workouts, another noticeable upgrade is the new precision-crafted swimproof design— water-resistant up to 50 meters, so you can wear the Versa 2 in the shower, pool and any body of water – let’s hope we can make use of that feature in the summer! Furthermore, the Versa 2 includes innovative sleep features like Sleep Score and Smart Wake. Based on your heart rate, time asleep, and restlessness, Sleep Score helps you to understand your sleep quality each night. Smart Wake on the other hand tracks the quality of your sleep and determines the best time for you to wake up. If you’re someone who wants to tidy up your daily routine and sleeping pattern, the Fitbit Versa 2 can help you do just that. From navigating between pages to launching and closing apps, thanks to a new processor under the hood, the Versa 2 is coupled with even faster performance than its predecessor. Another perk we want to mention is the smartwatch’s Fitbit Pay option. After adding up to six credit or debit cards on your Versa 2 watch, you can simply purchase from your wrist. Tap and pay at millions of stores around the globe — no phone or wallet needed. When it comes to design, at first glance, the next generationwearable looks strikingly similar to its forerunner, but a closer

look reveals the differences. The “squircle” design that resembles the original Versa is something Fitbit has carried on to its Versa 2, but contrary to the original version, the new watch comes with a larger display area and a premium aluminium finish. Where the original Versa had three buttons on the chassis (two on the left and one on the right), the Versa 2 has just a single button on the left, which serves as both the select and the back button. That being said, you’re never more than a press or two away from the feature you want to access, while any other navigation you need to perform is done via the touchscreen. Fitbit’s new Versa 2 is available in black with a carbon case, petal with a copper rose aluminum case, and stone with a mist grey case. Packed with advanced health, fitness and smart features to elevate your entire lifestyle, Versa 2 is the 24/7 go-to and helping hand that we all need! ✤

ince 1997, Mercedes-Benz has been building premium SUVs in the USA, the main market for these vehicles worldwide. In 2006 the GL full-size seven-seater was launched. The next major change came in 2015, with a face lift that emphasised the luxury character of second-generation large SUV’s and changed the name to GLS. On top of that, it is the market leader in its segment - just like the S-Class Saloon. As a leading SUV motoring brand, Mercedes offers an even more comfortable lead with the new GLS. A truly luxurious vehicle with seating for seven adults as standard, this is the car we’ve been waiting for. With a longer wheelbase for more legroom and an even smoother ride, the GLS lets you live large without the bulky driving experience. It's chiseled and muscular, yet polished and agile. The confident presence of its exterior stems from its impressive dimensions, which are even larger than those of its predecessor (length +77 mm, width +22 mm). One of the benefits of the 60mm longer wheelbase is interior spaciousness, especially in the second row. The three fully electrically adjustable seat rows offer all passengers a generous amount of space and outstanding seating comfort. The seats in the third row can be lowered into the floor to increase the boot space (up to 2400 litres), while the seats in the second-row fold flat. This is an excellent feature for those who like to lug around baggage as a result of shopping sprees or if you’re someone who likes to pack up for weekend road trips. in the GLS 580 4MATIC is an electrified V8 engine featuring EQ Boost - a 48-volt system with integrated starter-generator. The front section of the new GLS exudes presence and power: this is ensured by the upright radiator grille in an octagonal SUV interpretation, the prominent, chrome-plated underguard in the front apron with the bone-shaped air inlet grille, and the bonnet with two powerdomes. This striking appearance is emphasised by the distinctive headlamp design by day and night. The Multibeam LED headlamps are equipped with a total of 112 LEDs per headlamp, the maximum light intensity permitted by law. The daytime running lights with three LED segments underline the status of the GLS as the S-Class of SUVs. The GLS cuts an imposing figure from the rear, as well, particularly with the powerful shoulder muscle extending from the rear doors to the tail lights. The two-piece tail lamps are based on LED technology, and their high-calibre, threedimensional look conveys depth and solidity. The reflectors are relocated lower down, giving the tail lamps a flatter appearance. They are crowned by a slender, continuous chrome trim strip. If the GLS is equipped with the five-zone automatic climate control, the third row has its own zone with climate control vents in the roof. This zone is supplied by its own, electrically powered heater and air conditioner. A push of a button is all that is required to stow away the comfortable seats and make full use of the 2400-litre boot space in the GLS. The carpet-trimmed backs of the backrests form part of a flat, practical load area. Another push of a button lowers the boot sill by approx. 50 mm to make it easier to load heavy items. The E-Active Body Control active suspension on 48-volt basis offers outstanding suspension comfort, agile handling and a high degree of off-road capability. Like the GLE, the GLS features the latest generation of Mercedes- Benz driving assistance systems giving cooperative support to the driver. The new 4MATIC ensures great agility on the road and strong performance off the beaten track. The new GLS has impressive aerodynamics in its segment, with a Cd figure of 0.32. It has a new Carwash function, which enables the car to be prepared for entry into a carwash with a single press of a button. Luxury in the new GLS is shared generously among all passengers, particularly if the Rear Comfort package Plus is ordered. It includes a 7-inch Android tablet in its own docking station in the second row's larger luxury centre armrest. The tablet allows control of all the MBUX comfort and entertainment functions (see next section) from the rear seat rows, such as access to radio, TV, media, phone and web browser. It can also be used to control the Rear Seat Comfort package and the five-zone automatic climate control for the rear seats. The driver can assume control of all options and features from his or her seat at any time, of course. The centre console also offers a wireless-charging compartment for smartphones and additional USB ports. Rear passengers are indulged further still thanks to luxury head restraints with additional cushions and the rearward-extended centre console between the front seats with cup holders. The GLS is equipped with the latest generation of the infotainment system MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience). Upgrades include two large 12.3-inch/31.2 cm screens. The information on the instrument cluster and media display is easily legible on the large, high-resolution screens. An emotive presentation with brilliant graphics underlines the comprehensibility of the intuitive control structure. The high aspirations of the new Mercedes-Benz GLS are likewise clearly apparent in its engine line-up. Powerful six and eight-cylinder engines deliver the motoring comfort and effortlessly superior power that suit the characteristics of this luxurious car. In all variants of the new GLS, power is transmitted by the 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission. The broad ratio spread of gears one to nine allows a clearly perceptible reduction in engine speed and is a decisive factor behind the high level of energy efficiency and ride comfort. A transfer case with electronically controlled multi-plate clutch is likewise fitted as standard. This allows a variable transfer of drive torque from 0-100 percent (torque on demand) between the axles. The new GLS is the S-Class of premium SUVs. AMAL SHINE With the award-winning and leading voice of fashion and lifestyle in the UAE capital, Amal Salameh INTRODUCING MY NEW BEAUTY BLOG After six years in the social media industry and on one quiet quarantined-at-home afternoon, my beauty blog was launched. Technically, it wasn’t really planned and more of a spur-of-the-moment decision, however, the inspiration behind it was not boredom, quite the opposite. Tons of passion was poured into it behind the scenes which ultimately made me stop procrastinating and finally press the publish button. I found that the industry was lacking in unfiltered reviews and with the rise of influencers – products are shown for a mere 24 hours on IG stories to then just disappear the next day, and viewers have no reference to go back and read about the item. I wanted to fill this gap and provide my subscribers with this. My aim is to create an online space with full disclosure on all products, whether the post is sponsored, gifted or purchased myself. This is where you will find full transparency re: skincare and make up by breaking the stigma in our region when it comes to reviews. I will just bluntly share my experiences on both drugstore and luxury beauty products and say it how it really is. All of what people really want to know, like if it works or not, which is what you will find on my blog. Another inspiration behind the blog is my passion for writing and storytelling but with my own voice – the witty and not-so-serious side of me. Blogging has given me an outlet to just be myself with the ability for me to be me in a way I was never able to before. To share, connect and build an online community with unfiltered reviews. Are you ready to subscribe and shine together? ✤
Yours fashionably, Amal

• QUARANTINE WELLNESS
WELLBEING AT HOME Practicing social-distancing to remain protected from covid-19 is part of a daily routine for all of us across the globe right now. To help us all through these unusual days, Anantara Spa experts from across the world offer advice on how to practice self-care at home, and we’re sharing their wisdom with you.
1. Practice Overall Wellbeing from Galina Antoniuk Spa Director, Anantara the Palm Dubai Resort, UAE. Try to stay in a routine even while working from home or if you’re not able to spend a lot of time outside. Wake up at your usual time and use any saved commute time to get into a home fitness regime. It’s also good to get into the habit of squeezing half a lemon into a glass of warm water and drink first thing in the morning – this helps to boost the immune system and is rich with vitamin C. Eat as much fresh fruit and vegetables as possible. Berries are known to have a lot of antioxidants, helping you fight colds and flus. A relaxing 20-minute warm bath before bed will calm the body, soul and mind. 2. The Beauty of Sleep from Dr Serge Landrieu Master of Wellness, Anantara Bophut Koh Samui Resort, Thailand. For a fully restorative sleep, it is best to stop eating after lunch and then break this fast with breakfast. If you can, try to keep a window of 16 or 18 hours without eating over 24 hours. This is a form of intermittent fasting. Do not eat food before going to sleep, if you are hungry take a little sip of oil. Going to bed and falling asleep early is essential as the hours of sleep sustained before midnight count the most for reviving the whole immune system. To wind down for sleep, establish an evening ritual before you go to bed. This can include meditating, practicing gratitude, praying, or slowing down your breath with Pranayama (breathing exercises). To ensure that you sleep through the night, stop drinking around 5pm to 6pm, and drink just half a glass of water before bed to avoid waking in the middle of the night to use the bathroom. Jump start your day by planning something you enjoy for when you wake up so that you wake up with a purpose. 3. Meditating from Dr. Eranga Kaushal Ayurveda Doctor, Anantara Kalutara Resort, Sri Lanka. Meditation helps to calm the mind and centre your chakras. Promoting reduced blood pressure, better daily functioning, and improved focus, regular practice of mindful meditation at home can help the mind send the 78

right messages to the body and act accordingly. It also helps to lower the stress levels, which helps boost your immune system. We can recommend the Pranayama breathing meditation, also called breath control. Take a steady breath in through both nostrils. Inhale until you reach your lung capacity while maintaining a tall spine. Hold your breath for a second, then constrict some of the breath at the back of your throat, as if you were about to whisper a secret, and exhale slowly through both nostrils. The slow, calming rhythm brings natural rest to the mind and releases tension from the stressed-out parts of the body. 4. Follow a light meal plan from Dr. Gopal Govindasamy Master of Wellness, Anantara Rasananda, Koh Phangan Villas,Thailand. Naturopathic doctor and yoga expert Dr. Gopal Govindasamy, originally from India specializes in Ayurveda, wellness, and nutrition and lifestyle at Anantara Rasananda Koh Phangan Villas. He has been a leading wellness expert for over 16 years, and his record for relieving and correcting persistent physical problems has resulted in an international reputation as "Dr. Magic Hands”. His top tips to maintain optimum wellness during self-isolation or lockdown include following a light meal plan with healthy foods, plenty of fluids, regular exercise, and maintaining a routine. Eating light simple food is recommend due to lower levels of activity when staying inside a house or apartment almost all day as eating heaving foods will add too much pressure to cleansing system, which pulls down your immunity. Stay hydrated, drinking between two and three litres of mineral water daily, room temperature or lukewarm water is best for the system and avoid carbonated beverages and energy drinks. Exercise. Keep your daily routine balanced with mild exercise, yoga or Tai-Chi for 45-60 minutes every day. Stay home. Most important of all, stay at home and be healthy. ✤
