The City That Speaks...
“
If we are to preserve culture we must continue to create it. - Johan Huizinga
L
ike many of you who have come to call Abu Dhabi home, I feel a special connection with this city unlike anywhere else in the world. It’s not just that it has the perfect location for long weekend jaunts to Africa or Asia, or that you can literally order petrol to your car (although, that does really help sometimes), and it’s not even the year-round sunshine - what Abu Dhabi has to offer is an amalgamation of traditions and modernity. In many ways, it is a city of balance; on one hand, plenty is done to preserve and celebrate Emirati culture, and on the other hand, there is a constant spike in skyscrapers and contemporary landmarks but also in the very openness of accepting and welcoming people from all walks of life to live in this thriving city. And, yes, the sunshine does help. :P For our annual big September issue, we take a look at how one Emirati is bringing his love for the city into 2019. Holding onto Abu Dhabi’s nostalgic past whilst celebrating its growth and transformation, Sultan Al Ramahi is an Urban Planner by day and a digital artist when time allows. Turn to p27 and read all about his cool and culturally relevant work, created and shared on the instagram page: @vectorsandstuff. We also dive into the food scene here in Abu Dhabi. Starting p37, we explore the many types of dining joints, concepts and trends that make up the city’s eclectic gastronomy game - it’s definitely not one to disappoint. This is followed by some of the best culinary promos on offer for the month of September; from Italian to grills, Asian food and brunch, plus many more amazing (and tasty) deals to check out, there’s absolutely no need to be staying in this month. If that's not enough, we've got the official nominee list for the second annual FACT Spa & Wellness Awards Abu Dhabi 2019 (p56). With the city's pamper stars vying to walk away with an award, there's lots of favourites as well as newbies and some first-timers who made the cut. Visit www.fact-magazine.com to cast your vote today. The ceremony will be held in late October, where we'll recognise and celebrate the nominees and the winners. This summer has been filled with lots of fresh air and family time, and if there's one thing I've learned, it's that there is literally nowhere in the world like Abu Dhabi. It took me all of two weeks to start missing the constant rays of sunshine, beach days and diverse mix of shoppers in malls! Especially as it rained most days where I was, you can only imagine the weather FOMO. Now, the real question is, how can I deal with this humidity? Tips and tricks are welcomed... ☺

PARK HYATT’S YOUNG CHEF FINALIST Martim Maita, the Chef of Park Grill at Park Hyatt Abu Dhabi Hotel and Villas is one step closer to being named the best in the world at the S.Pellegrino Young Chef Competition 2019-2020. CHEF MARTIM IS ONE among 135 candidates from 12 regions, representing 50 countries who will display their culinary skills on a global stage. It was announced earlier this month that more than 2,400 applicants entered the world-famous competition with just Chef Martim making it from the UAE. The 28-year old rising culinary star with over a decade of experience has been merited to being the force behind the game changing concepts that has put the Park Grill at the centre of Abu Dhabi’s food map. Chef Martim’s passion for the culinary arts began in his family kitchen nestled in São Paulo, Brazil. He learned the secrets to perfecting Syrian, Lebanese and French cuisines from his maternal grandparents who doled out everything from Lebanese Shish Barak to Gnocchi, Brazilian rice, Beans and Cassava flour for their weekly Sunday lunch. His real education in gastronomy was in 2008 when he graduated from SENAC University in Brazil with a degree in Culinary Arts and later completed a specialization course in avant-garde culinary techniques, from the Basque Culinary Center, San Sebastian, Spain, otherwise recognized as the epicentre of contemporary gastronomic research. Chef Martim joined the Hyatt family in 2010 and has since redefined the boundaries of contemporary cuisine. Come October, Chef Martim will vie for the S.Pellegrino title by recreating his signature dish - onion, veal offal, salsify, garden weeds. He revealed how the potentially award-winning dish came into being, the inspirations that went behind its creation 10
fact magazine
and how it defines him as a chef. Chef Martim said: “This dish is a representation of me as a chef. Its origin comes from a reflection. In the restaurant where I used to work, it was difficult to get good quality products. One day I purchased an onion for which the value was almost three times higher than the usual price. “People looked at me like I was a lunatic for spending all that money on an onion,” he explained. “This made me contemplate the value of a product such as an onion, which is not only the flavour base of many preparations, but is also a complex and versatile ingredient. “One day I chanced upon a parody verse from a famous poem by Gertrud Stein (A rose is a rose is a rose): An onion is an onion is an onion. This was the beginning of my dish, a tribute to the technical possibilities of this humble and often neglected ingredient. I reversed the common order of vegetables as secondary to animal protein in the development of a dish,” Chef Martim added. Chef Martim Maita will be joined by his mentor, Executive Chef Ivan Musoni of Park Hyatt Abu Dhabi Hotel and Villas at the S.Pellegrino Young Chef Grand Finale, which will be held in South Africa in October. ✤

OMAKASE TRADITIONS 99 Sushi Bar & Restaurant will continue to run its popular Omakase business lunch until December 31 in response to growing customer demand. ‘OMAKASE’ IS A JAPANESE dining tradition which literally means “I’ll leave it up to you”. This encourages guests to entrust their entire dining experience in the hands of a chef, who prepares a seasonal, elegant and artistic meal. Jaime Castaneda, general manager at 99 Sushi Bar & Restaurant, said: “Our weekday lunch guests are usually here to talk business over a meal. We help them save time by taking away the hassle of placing orders with a meticulously crafted menu that shows off our chefs’ skills.” Priced at AED149 per person, the Omakase business lunch is available from Sunday through Thursday and is served from 12pm until 3.30pm. Featuring nine courses, the menu kicks off with a selection of starters like edamame and the signature ‘Capumiso soup’ – the 99 Sushi version of miso soup presented like a cappuccino. Plates of spicy tuna tartar and salmon flambé nigiri reflect the restaurant’s 12

core value of using only the finest ingredients for their dishes. The chefs continue to let the ingredients do the talking with more favourites like the Wagyu flambé nigiri and baby lamb gyozas. Those with room are encouraged to try the homemade mochi ice-cream and complete the experience with a cup of coffee or tea. Floor-to-ceiling windows provide a striking panoramic view of the Arabian Gulf, while the stunning interior sets the mood for some subtly complex modern Japanese cooking. For a more intimate setting, the venue also boasts a private dining room that often needs to be reserved in advance. ✤

RAW VEGAN CULINARY OFFERINGS Four Seasons Hotel Abu Dhabi has launched a unique culinary offering in its lobby lounge Al Meylas, often referred to as “the living room of Abu Dhabi.” CRAFTED BY CELEBRATED Executive Sous Chef Christian Buenrostro, the new raw vegan menu items are inspired by a commitment to fresh, local ingredients and a desire to cater to an array of healthy lifestyles. The Forbes Five Star hotel is elevating its vegan dining with the addition of nine innovative, raw vegan dishes including starters, main courses and desserts. “Through our newly-introduced raw vegan dishes, we are setting a new standard in healthy hotel dining with elevated vegan offerings in our popular Al Meylas lounge,” says Chef Christian Buenrostro. “Working alongside our team of culinary experts, we have created raw vegan lunch and dinner items that are both nourishing and delicious, infused with flavours and ingredients authentic to the diverse cuisine of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.” According to the kitchen rules of raw cooking, the food is heated or "cooked" at temperatures not greater than 115 to 118 Fahrenheit (47 Celsius) to preserve nutrients and enzymes, diminish the energy used for cooking, and keep food in its most natural form. Based on fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds and sprouted/ soaked grains and legumes, the health-inspired raw vegan dishes created by Chef Christian are available at the Hotel’s signature lobby lounge Al Meylas during lunch and dinner time, and through in-room dining around the clock. Highlights of the raw vegan menu include mix field mushroom ceviche, baby gem tacos, raw kale Caesar salad, the classic raw vegan pizza and nachos, pad Thai, and as sweet-yet-healthy ending, the decadent banana pie, fudge “choco” cake and blueberries cheesecake. Illustrating (literally) his love for Abu Dhabi and the childhood memories the city gave to him, 29-year-old Sultan Al Ramahi has turned his professional skills into a personal passion project, one that showcases the UAE capital in all its architectural glory, past and present. few small roundabouts, the Corniche, and the now-demolished but ever-famous Volcano Fountain all dominate Sultan Al Ramahi’s childhood memories of growing up in Abu Dhabi. The 29-yearold Urban Planner left the city at the age of eight but still has vivid images of life in the UAE capital at a time when the Tourist Club Area was the most happening place to hang out in town. That was a time when Sultan would drag someone to Hamed Centre at least once a week to see which new video games had come in stock. Then there’s the Burger King at Hamdan Centre, which he fondly remembers as the location of every single one of his birthday parties. “Many who were here back then will tell you that life was easier and simpler,” Sultan recalls. “It is a shared collective memory of the city. Everyone went to the same places, the same parks, and same shopping centres, so those buildings hold a special place in many people’s hearts. That’s why they are so nostalgic — they remind people of a certain time and place,” he adds. The Corniche beach is another place he often frequented: “It used to have only two lanes of traffic and was a few steps away from our apartment

building entrance,” Sultan explains. “This was before the massive two dredging projects in the 90s and 00s. I remember the crystal clear water and collecting bucket loads of hermit crabs. I also grew up exploring the marine life close to shore with my swimming goggles — I would see huge lobsters, stingrays, jellyfish, and colourful fish depending on the season.” Sultan spent 10 years living between Singapore and Dubai before heading over to the U.S in 2008 to study Architecture and Fine Art at Washington State University. In 2013, he returned to Abu Dhabi and started work at the Urban Planning Council, a time when he also came face to face with how much the city had transformed. “I realised the city had changed a lot when I moved back to the UAE after university in 2013,” Sultan tells us. "It felt unfamiliar all of a sudden. Abu Dhabi really started to change after the passing of the late Sheikh Zayed (God rest his soul). At that point, around 2004, the government started selling islands and huge plots of land to development companies, and projects you see now like Yas, Saadiyat and Reem Island were all announced in that year.” Sultan has been drawing since he could hold a pencil; constantly sketching on any bare surface near him. “Ask my wife about our napkins,” he smiles. “I naively thought that there would be no realistic career in the arts at the time I left for university in 2008, so I studied the next best creative thing, architecture.” This led Sultan back to Abu Dhabi and in short a project at work where he had to produce building vectors, which soon turned into a personal project of passion and leisure with the creation of Vectors and Stuff - an instagram page dedicated to mapping Abu Dhabi’s architectural heritage, past and present. For those of you who may not be familiar with this term - vectors are digitally-created 2D images that are made up of lines, points and geometric shapes. They stay in proportion no matter their size.

“I posted a few of my designs on my personal IG page at the beginning of 2017,” Sultan says. “It got such a nice response that I ended up dedicating a whole IG account to just vectors, with my first series being the architecture of Abu Dhabi.” Sultan’s motto of “from the nostalgic to the unnecessary” not only tugs on the heartstrings of those who have called this city home for a long time, but also illustrates to visitors and new communities just how deeply-rooted and fast-changing the architectural landscape in Abu Dhabi, is an important part of its everyday culture and timeless heritage. From the modern-day architectural phenomena like Louvre Abu Dhabi and Cleveland Clinic to the classic lines of Madinat Zayed and even a water tank in Khalidiya, there is no building too big, too small, too important or too insignificant for Sultan. It’s all about making the local connection. “The first vector of the Abu Dhabi Architecture series was the Bainuna Tower — the blue building on the Corniche with the golf ball on top,” he points out. “One of my childhood best friends used to live there. It’s distinct. I think we’re one of the only countries with golf balls on their skyscrapers. The golf balls are actually where they put telecommunication relay towers for the surrounding area,” he adds. “After I found that out, I knew I had to do that building first.” Of course, when you dedicate your time to illustrating the buildings in a city, you’re bound to come across some interesting finds, right? “There are a bunch of hidden gems here, you just have to look,” Sultan says. “Sector E9 is one example — it’s the area with the Russian Embassy and the Mariah Cinema. It’s entirely walkable and every building is built to a human scale (meaning it’s built with proportions that humans find easier to look at, use and interact with). “It’s got so many diverse, amazing food options. We've been so conditioned to only go out to enjoy ourselves in hotels and malls that we tend to forget the city that’s right here,” he reveals. Sultan has no real criteria for which building is chosen to be the next vector drawing. He has a rough list and even 32

personal requests, but it tends to be whichever is the easiest building to complete at the time. With that said, there are some structures that do excite him as he powers up the computer. “I’d love to interpret every ‘unique’ villa in Madinat Khalifa/Madinat Shakhbout,” he says. “Those areas have a huge amount of bizarre, extravagant villas. Look for the Cinderella castle villa the next time you're in Khalifa City.” Noted! Aside from this, some of his favourite buildings in the city include: Al Ibrahimi Building, which he describes as a classic example of the modern architecture of the Gulf from the 1960s to the 1990s; the Pineapple Slide located in Airport Park, which is also a prominent feature in every childhood photograph; and Cultural Foundation, built in 1981, which Sultan can’t wait to explore further when it’s fully reopened later this year. “When this closed down in 2005, you really felt the void in this city's art and culture world,” he says. In terms of technicality and tools, Sultan loves to experiment. He finds the ease of digital design appealing as virtual space gives the artist more breathing room to make mistakes, create as many versions of one drawing as you want to, and let your imagination run wild along the way. “I started messing around with Adobe Illustrator in 2015,” Sultan explains. “It’s a programme that’s really useful working in urban planning design and architecture because it’s easy to draw things with clean
straight lines and a variety of illustrations in minimal time. “On a personal note, I’m an illustrator and have a habit of sketching or doodling on any surface that’s closest to me. I always have a pen and notebook with me. So Illustrator was the logical next step to take my illustrations into the digital space, not just in my notebooks. It’s a totally different medium and way to create but I fell in love with the simplicity and ability to experiment, make mistakes and create a million versions of one drawing,” he says. Sultan recognises exactly why Vectors and Stuff has been a hit with his followers. When he first started the account, it was just a way to have some fun and share his personal documentation of the city's architecture. Today, he’s hoping that the page can be seen as complementary to the current academic research that’s currently being done across various governmental entities like the Department of Culture and Tourism (DCT), and the Ministry of Culture. Furthermore, it’s all about the personal connections. “The feedback has been absolutely amazing and positive,” he shares. “Most of the followers are from Abu Dhabi or have spent most of their lives here, so they have a really strong connection to what is written and posted. I think that’s why people are drawn to it — no matter what the building is, it has some sort of nostalgic memory or certain experience attached to it for people who have lived here for decades and have seen the city transform.”

Digital art is a contemporaray, fairly unusual yet very attractive form of creativity through which Sultan has been able to bring together his personal interests with his love for the city. Along the way, he’s utilised all the free videos on YouTube to help him keep up with trends and learn new skills. His advice for other budding digital artists is, first and foremost, to not be afraid of being themselves and sharing their personal style of work. “Don’t be scared about putting the art out there that makes you really happy and that’s fun to you,” Sultan advises. “You’ll be surprised to see the response from people when you share things that are authentically you. Also, don’t be afraid to reach out to established designers you love, just to tell them you admire their work or if you have a question on how they do something. You might make some great connections and friendships that way,” he says. Sultan often jokes to himself that Vectors and Stuff will end once he’s digitally carved 34

every building in Abu Dhabi. In reality, he understands that there is room for it to evolve and develop into another series, for which he’d love to partner with local cultural organisations as well as continue to make more vectors through commissions, to sell prints and more (merchandise heaven!). "I’d also love to take this to other cities around the Middle East,” Sultan says. “Jerusalem, Baghdad, Kuwait; our entire region has such an amazing catalogue of modern architectural heritage. Right now, I’m really grateful and excited for the future.” Preserving and showcasing Abu Dhabi’s eclectic architecture through Vectors and Stuff has definitely illustrated one thing: you can take the boy out of the city, but you can’t take the city out of the boy. ✤

Food for the Soul You can’t talk about the culture in Abu Dhabi without giving a worthy mention to all the world cuisines that make up the literal melting pot of the city’s culinary landscape. From cafe culture to hole-in-the-walls, fine dining and even delivery options, the UAE capital is a force to be reckoned with when it comes to gastronomy. et us set the scene: maybe you're on holiday, or maybe you’re a resident, in one of the world’s most intriguing capitals, Abu Dhabi: you’ve been on the world’s fastest rollercoaster, you’ve spent many an afternoon instagramming the gold-clad halls of a bona fide palace, and you’ve taken a sunset kayak through the winding mangroves. At the end of every activity-filled day, all that’s left to do is try some local food. But, where do you even begin? “I would definitely recommend a walk through the downtown area of the city for the famous Arabic shawarma,” says Youssef El Habbal, CEO of Serenity Hospitali-ty, Abu Dhabi. Shawarma joints have been around for almost as long as the UAE has existed. A simple sandwich creation of bread stuffed with thin slices of lamb, chicken, doner or even the chickpea favourite, falafel; the shawarma is a staple of the Abu Dhabi food landscape that often triggers strong opinions. Youssef’s recommendation for the perfect indulgent shawarma that a) won’t break the bank and b) will give you a taste of authenticity, is the home-grown, Arabic street food concept called Meshwari. “Meshwari does things a little bit different,” he explains. “Sometimes, when peo-ple think of Arabic street food, the assumption might be that it is junk food. That it may not be fresh, the preparation may not be hygienic, or that the place itself may not be as clean as a wellestablished restaurant,” Youssef explains. “But, Meshwari is unique.” If you’re not as adventurous as those who will gladly walk up to

a hole-in-the-wall with revolving lamb and chicken spits, then Meshwari is the happy medium. This place has heavily invested in white surfaces, clinical surroundings, fresh produce and healthy ingredients all the while keeping prices street-level afford-able. One thing is for sure, if you want good Arabic grub, you need to experience where the locals go, and Meshwari has been widely accepted by the Emirati community for it’s quickness, quality, taste and top-notch service. It doesn’t stop there. In a city where the food and beverage sector generated a staggering revenue of £408 billion in 2017, according to the Department of Cul-ture and Tourism Abu Dhabi’s Annual Report, you can eat eggs benedict for breakfast, seafood dim sum for lunch, a juicy steak for dinner, and stop off for some more unusual snacks in between. From food trucks to family meals, fresh fish market finds to farm-grown produce, there’s no shortage of tradition, trendy or convenience. “In Downtown, you can find authentic Filipino food, Indian joints serving up the real deal, Ethiopian eateries, Afghani and Iraqi kebab, all of it,” Youssef shares. “It is the best place to showcase the richness in the different types of cuisine that Abu Dhabi has to offer.” A seasoned food and beverage industry professional, Youssef is one of a small team that is responsible for bringing over Dunkin’ Donuts from the States to the Middle East, back in the 90s. Youssef is incredibly excited by the growth of Abu Dhabi’s culinary trends. “Right now, there is a demand for whatever can be de-livered,” he tells us. “Abu Dhabi is seeing a continuous growth with new devel-opments and attractions that require more labour and more middle and entry level staff, so the trends are geared towards more affordable, good quality res-taurants and, of course, healthy foods. The awareness for good health is very high right now,” he adds. A huge part of Abu Dhabi’s epicurean setting is fine dining, especially licensed venues that exist within the walls of a 5-star hotel or an independent, luxury de-velopment. But, as trends continue to change and the appetite for something newer and better creeps up, Youssef recognises that innovation is one of the top demands when it comes to eating out in the UAE capital. “I believe that Abu Dhabi will always have key fine dining locations and I’m sure that these will change over time to suit different trends,” Youssef explains. “The-se venues cannot only rely on tourism but also must cater to local residents who tend to get bored easily. After all, food is like fashion; it’s a trend, it’s entertainment, it’s a luxury. fact magazine

• FOOD & CULTURE You go for brands but when that brand doesn’t keep things exciting and innovative, you get bored and the excitement will fade,” he contin-ues. “This is what’s happening to fine dining, it must keep evolving to stay rele-vant.” The great thing is that anyone who does want to spend their evenings eating out in lavish locations or even if you’re looking for a family treat, celebrating a spe-cial occasion or wanting to go all out for date night, there are some outstanding restaurants in the likes of Coya, Zuma, Dai Pai Dong, Nusr-Et, 99 Sushi Bar, Café Milano and more on Al Maryah Island as well as 5-star hotels including The Ritz-Carlton Abu Dhabi, Grand Canal, Shangri-La Hotel Qaryat Al Beri, Jumeirah at Etihad Towers and others that offer up world-class cuisine. Where Abu Dhabi seems to be thriving the most is in its ability to fill gaps in the food market and give the people exactly what they want. In-mall outlets, home-grown eateries, and world-famous franchises are opening in droves for a crowd that is thirsty for individuality. Youssef says: “With the development of places like Yas Island, demands have changed. The footfall in this city, as far as tourism goes has sky rocketed and there is a greater need for fast casual, family-friendly dining.” Youssef and his team at Serenity Hospitality have worked tirelessly over the past year to fill the gap for an affordable, edgy barbeque joint. Dickey’s, one of the world’s biggest family-owned Texas barbeque chains, opened at Yas Mall earlier this year. “This is a meat loving country,” Youssef says. “Dickey’s gives diners something affordable with a completely different process of barbeque; the meat is smoked in a pit so everything about this restaurant is new for Abu Dhabi.” Food and beverage demand in Abu Dhabi is robust. Consumers are generally going out more to eat and although business for operators can be challenging, the run up to big annual events like the Formula One Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, and the much-awaited Expo 2020, alongside the opening of more entertainment attractions, will continue to strengthen the city’s gastronomic industry. For Youssef, there is one crucial factor that stands out in Abu Dhabi. “Service,” he smiles. “We have good food here, but what we also have is really good service. You are given the whole experience, from the moment you make a reservation, to pulling up at the valet and until the time you leave, you’re always guaranteed a winning customer service experience in Abu Dhabi,” he continues. “Whether you are talking about QSR or fine dining, experience is just as important as innovation, the set up, marketing and all the other fine-tuning elements.” So, whether you’ve spent a day getting up close with the superheroes at Warner Bros. World, or it’s last minute plans for a meal out, settle on a craving and rest-assured that Abu Dhabi will satisfy on all culinary fronts. This is one city with a foodie soul that’s culturally diverse and very, very delicious. ✤ 40

WHAT’S IT ABOUT?
Led by an ageing dancer and an ambitious single mother, a group of strippers lie, steal and hustle dozens of wealthy men when the industry reaches its lowest point during the late-2000s financial crisis. What follows is Elizabeth, a journalist, covering the story for a magazine and interviewing one of the ringleaders as she tries to figure out what went wrong.
DIRECTOR: Lorene Scafaria CAST: Jennifer Lopez, Cardi B, Lili Reinhart
WHY IT’S WORTH WATCHING?
Bringing together Jennifer Lopez, Constance Wu, Lili Reinhart, Keke Palmer and Cardi B, Hustlers has got to be one of the biggest releases of the year. Based on New York magazine’s 2015 article The Hustlers at Scores by Jessica Pressler, the film is girl power at its finest as a group of strippers turn the tables on their customers. A real-life revenge tale, the plot follows a determined single mother and an ageing dancer, that lead a crew of savvy former strip club employees who come together to get back at their Wall Street clients. As Lopez teaches Wu’s newbie character her moves on the pole, the women decide to take advantage of a few of their clients and ultimately take it too far. Unlike earlier stripper-centric movies, Hustlers is adapted and directed by a woman, Lorene Scafaria. Offering an empathetic narrative on men and women as well as our gender roles, the film will give you something to think about, while having you perched on the edge of your seat.

Showcasing an exuberant pop sound, the Lover era ushers in self-reflection as well as raw emotions. Continuing to spread self-love and positivity, “You Need to Calm Down” takes on the internet trolls and haters. No Man’s Land
A beautifully melodious ode to women in history, Frank Turner’s No Man’s Land is a true work of art. Incorporating a traditional folk approach, Turner shares stories that are not being told right now but need to be heard. The eighth studio album by the English singer-songwriter tells the tales of important, inspirational women throughout history who don’t receive the recognition they deserve. One of the most influential musicians in American history, “Sister Rosetta” talks about the unparalleled Sister Rosetta Tharpe. Using some guitar parts from her own back catalog, the heartfelt single is unlike anything we have ever heard before. Encapsulating her work and spirit in a stunningly respectful manner, Turner is treading uncharted territory. Combining his love for history and songwriting, Frank Turner is colliding two worlds that have always been separate from each other. Bringing to life history’s forgotten women, No Man’s Land shifts away popular culture and gives his music a whole new edge. We’re in awe.
The Greenwich Village church they belong to connects two very different couples, Charles and Lily, and Nan and James. Set against the backdrop of a changing New York City, the story follows these two couples through decades of love and friendship, jealousy and understanding, forgiveness and commitment. Surrounded by turbulent times, the couples forge unimaginable paths through their evolving relationships, each struggling with uncertainty, heartbreak, and happiness. A total page-turner!

T
his fall, NYU Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) Art Gallery, the University’s academic museum-gallery, invites viewers into the imagined worlds of four UAE-based artists who have each emerged in the Gulf, and are rising internationally. Open to the public from September 16 – December 7, 2019, the exhibition is curated by Chief Curator at NYU Abu Dhabi and Executive Director of the NYUAD Art Gallery, Maya Allison. Through close study of their surroundings in the UAE, each of the artists here reflect on our shared futures: Areej Kaoud, Ayman Zedani, Jumairy, and Raja’a Khalid. Speculative Landscapes presents a series of new installations through which each artist explores the very concept of environment (natural, artificial, virtual). Each raises a question: how do organisms – whether human or other – create, survive, and inhabit our natural, artificial, and virtual worlds? The four artists in this exhibition have developed their practice in the UAE, establishing a strong regional track record, as well as an emerging international presence. They share a speculative practice, extrapolating imagined worlds within existing ones. Allison says: “For me, these artists capture something unique in their perspectives, both in how they respond to our surroundings, and how they connect to the unusual art scene here. There has been an apparently fast rise of contemporary art in the UAE that matches the increasingly cosmopolitan nature of the country since its founding in 1971. “The art community, of course, has always existed, but began to create a very proactive community starting in the 1980s and 90s,” she adds. “That grass-roots scene was largely invisible to their international peers until around 2012, when the nowacclaimed Hassan Sharif came to the attention of major international curators. By then, the UAE’s Sharjah Art Biennial had long since become a highly-influential leader, while Dubai saw the growth of the commercial gallery sector with the pivotal Art Dubai fair, followed by the launch of a series of international museum projects in Abu Dhabi.”
Each installation offers an imaginary journey derived from the artists’ realworld observations of everyday life. In Khalid’s performative installation, she invites viewers to embrace personal well-being as a commodifiable trend, while Kaoud’s playground keeps visitors on high alert to ever-present risk. In two very different landscape installations, Zedani and Jumairy each propose worlds in which our natural bodies and the landscape around us manifest biological or artificial intelligence. “These three emirates (Sharjah, Dubai, and Abu Dhabi) host what has evolved into a diverse art ecology,” Allison continues. “Still, few know about the later generation of artists now based in the UAE. The community today, as much as ever, come from a mix of international backgrounds, and very often their work is in dialogue with both where we are, and the many cultures that converge in the UAE. Now, a host of organisations support the emerging artists, but other ‘emerged’ artists occupy a midpoint as they branch out into international museum shows and prestigious residencies. This exhibition offers a rare lens onto one specific recurring theme that I’ve observed in this emergent scene, a theme that these four artists in particular express through their distinctly arch, speculative, conceptual practice,” she explains. ✤

POP CULTURE & THE CITY Displaying European, American and Middle Eastern Pop Art, Popular Culture & the City is a new exhibition that reveals the intriguing layers of the ‘city’ and how they contribute to our narrative of dominant and circulated culture, through collage, sculpture, painting and installation works.
T
he Department of Culture and Tourism Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) is is presenting a selection of artworks from its own collection, which embody the meaning of popular culture and its synchronistic relationship with the ‘city’, in a cool exhibition running at Manarat Al Saadiyat until October 6. The artists in this exhibition have used the ‘city’ as their main inspiration, being complex urban places, fuelled by money, cars, oil, technology and, most importantly, societies. They are regarded as the ultimate manifestation of modernity but also the cradle of popular culture which gathers together sound, imagery and movement, whether it’s advertising, mass production of consumer goods, music, art, literature, food or technology. Alia Al Qassimi, Head of Manarat Al Saadiyat, said: “In line with Manarat Al Saadiyat’s vision of bringing contemporary culture to the forefront, we are very excited about the upcoming ‘Popular Culture & the City’ exhibition, which will present exceptional works that reflect the collective language and identity of our time. We look forward to showcasing the inspiring artwork created by this series of innovative artists,

whose vision will certainly appeal to the exhibition’s visitors.” DCT Abu Dhabi will be showcasing its own collection during the exhibition, which will also feature artists including Jeff Koons and Hassan Sharif, whose works focus on the mechanics of mass consumerism and critique, challenge and celebrate popular culture. Palestinian Wafa Hourani will also be participating and will be exhibiting photographs from his “Qalandia 2047” collection, which visualises everyday life in a Palestinian camp adjacent to the most important checkpoint that controls access to Ramallah. Wafa Hourani said: “One image is not enough to understand the social and the political complexity taking place daily in Palestine, but I hope that my contribution in some small way can contribute to the rich tapestry of our city, and share the burden of maintaining a collective national identity that future proofs our beautiful history for generations to come.” Also participating will be Jacques Villeglé, who collected advertising posters from the streets of Paris to create his signature affiches lacérées (torn posters), works of art created from commonplace materials. By removing these materials from their urban context and using fragments from them, he manages to reference the politics of the day. Also exhibiting will be American artist Keith Haring, who much like Villeglé, took to the streets to create his work. Haring’s signature style grew out of the New York street and graffiti culture of the 1980s and he became a key figure in the American Pop Art movement. Palestinian artist Taysir Batniji, who lives in Paris, has created a neon artwork in which two words in Arabic, tharwa thawra, are intertwined to read ‘wealth revolution’, side by side. These words provide a multilayered commentary on the realities of cities and their convulsions in the Arab world and beyond. Explaining the work Imperfect Lovers, 2008 Batniji said: “The two words with very different meanings appear to be nonidentical twins in Arabic calligraphy: they only differ in one letter’s positioning, a tiny nuance that the eye struggles to catch. The piece does not evoke romance, but on the contrary presents an unnatural couple. This pair of words attracts each other but remains imperfect as the lovers can never touch, except in our minds.” ✤ GO: VISIT WWW.MANARATALSAADIYAT.AE FOR MORE INFORMATION. 54

alking through the very doors that the likes of Winston Churchill, the Queen of England and many other prominent world figures have stepped through really feels like a journey of discovery. This is the iconic Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park, London; a building that speaks to the very fabric of the English capital’s architecture, history and deep heritage. It is where traditionally-dressed bellman in red coats and top hats greet you with warm smiles and sincere wishes for the day - reminding guests of the oldworld, classic English charm that so many visitors are looking for in London. In fact, pleasantries are plenty and welcoming as the staff at Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park, London all carry this same graceful approach to dealing with guests. In a bustling city during peak summer season, this is a first impression that we applaud. Housed in a 117-year-old landmark building, Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park, London reopened its doors in April 2019 after a restoration of its guest rooms and suites, including two newly created expansive penthouse suites. Conveying signature Mandarin touches, the London property boasts distinctive design and a strong sense of place, with both local elements and oriental flair meeting to create intuitive service that is as reflective of its British roots as it is synonymous with the brand’s oriental charisma.
Walk into the lobby and admire the understated elegance of a reception area that feels so much like walking into an old friend’s home. At check-in, we’re a little early and are shown to the very sophisticated Mandarin Bar for complimentary mocktails - a nice gesture by the MO team to start off our stay. SUITE TEMPTATIONS Instantly, you will recognise that the Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park, London is not doing things by halves – all 181 guest rooms and suites are now more luxurious and comfortable than ever before, with art deco-inspired features including carefully curated artworks and custom-designed furniture. There are too many nooks and details for us to capture for the ‘gram and we’re completely in zen mode when lounging in our Knightsbridge Suite. It’s no wonder that the space feels so inviting and effortless as the interior is a result of internationally renowned designer, Joyce Wang’s meticulous skills. She has overseen the redesign of all guest rooms and suites, along with the creation of the hotel’s new Penthouses, taking inspiration from the peaceful parkside location, as well as the glamour of the early 20th century’s Golden Age of travel. The suite is the size of a luxury apartment, designed with an airy, creative approach where space has been used practically and stylishly. Thoughtful touches with iconic
decor like innovative lighting, are used to remind guests of the unique themes. These beautiful suites feature a generous living room with a velvet sofa, a reading chair and a mirrored coffee table. The striking glass chandelier, gilded mirror artwork and hand tufted carpets and rugs reflect the beauty of nearby leafy Hyde Park. With a design inspired by the 20th century’s Golden Age of travel, these spacious suites provide a high level of luxury. Each lavish suite has a curated library of books by Mayfair publishers, Heywood Hill for guests to enjoy (we found a few by one of our favourite travel writers, Bill Bryson). Featuring views of buzzing Knightsbridge, this suite offers a sense of comfort and understated luxury. The en-suite bathroom is one of those that you would dream of having in your own home; elegantly fashioned from Volakas marble with a frieze made from Palisandro Bleu marble and twin vanity units as well as a huge rainforest shower. More than ideal for a group of friends, a couple or even a young family, who need their own space and mirror for makeup or grooming. Space is no issue here. A separate walk-in wardrobe is situated next to the living room whilst cupboard and closet space is abundant in the bedroom and living room too. However, it was in the details that we found the true essence of the Mandarin Oriental brand’s excelled service shine through. Plug sockets are neatly tucked away near both sides of the bed so there’s no arguing over who gets to charge their devices; in every suite, guests will find a host of special additions ranging from yoga mats for private practice, GHD hair straighteners, Nespresso coffee makers, his and her Miller Harris bathroom amenities and Jo Hansford hair products. We even receive complimentary amenities in the form of chocolate covered strawberries and a bottle of bubbly during the stay - it’s all about the small added touches. WORLD-CLASS DINING If food is your forte, the Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park, London has it all to make your stay the most exciting for every palate. All eyes are on the eclectic dining destinations which include the only London venue by Michelin-starred chef Daniel Boulud, Bar Boulud, the inspirational gastronomy of Heston Blumenthal at Dinner by Heston Blumenthal, and quintessentially British, fact magazine

The Roseberry for all-day dining and afternoon tea, alongside the magnificent Mandarin Bar. As far as food goes, Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park, London is bringing its A-game to the city’s luxury culinary scene. Start your day with a sumptuous breakfast where an extensive (and very delicious) menu includes everything from eggs benedict to fresh juices, fluffy French toast, pastries galore and even weekly changing specials plus Chinese and Japanese breakfast menus including cantonese dim sum and miso soup amongst other delicacies. Healthy options are aplenty with granola parfait, porridge and oats, egg whites and more to choose from. We’d highly recommend going down for breakfast between 9.30am-10.30am and either sitting on the gorgeous patio outside or indoors by the window. Why? Because these are the best spots from where to view the liveried royal guards trotting by in formation with Hyde park as a background a truly British experience. For dinner, we head to the acclaimed Bar Boulud and are very impressed with the mid-week crowd. The atmosphere is abuzz with diners when we visit – somebody celebrating a birthday, colleagues grabbing drinks after work, couples enjoying an intimate meal and families letting their taste buds explore new dishes for the evening. Our waiter for the evening, Jon Luca, is one of the reasons why the whole dining experience was an exceptional one. Friendly, accommodating of our dietary requirements and very knowledgeable on the menu, his forthcoming nature was appreciated. Bar Boulud is a stylish bistro and wine bar specialising in seasonal, rustic French cooking. Its relaxed ambience and fabulous cuisine has won plaudits from critics and diners alike. Incorporating two large connecting rooms, the restaurant features stunning design points such as an impressive zinc topped bar and a sleek open kitchen. Classic materials such as wood, leather and cork add a contemporary touch. As well as the main restaurant, guests have the option of dining at the charcuterie counter where they can watch the chefs at work. It’s simple dishes like the burrata cheese, cherry tomatoes and rocket pesto that remind us why freshness and flavour don’t have to be over-indulgent ingredients but rather quality is what matters. This is indeed a creamy burrata that we devour in minutes - Jon Luca’s recommendation of course (and a little of his Italian roots). The mezze is a great mix of baba ganoush, hummus, tzatziki lavash and socca chips - the perfect sharing dish to get conversation going. The Lobster Roll: Cornish lobster, confit lemon tarragon mayonnaise and brioche bun is a little bit of a revelation and a dish that seafood lovers should absolutely order. Next, the grilled sea bass, harrisa marinated peach Freekeh rice, spring onion is a dish that will please even the most discerning palate with its different textures and tastes. The restaurant is famed for its meat offerings with the pan-seared 12oz ribeye, 6oz hanger steak and range of juicy burgers taking centre stage. fact magazine

We love that the menu is a good manageable size with enough options to please all dietary requirements without straying too far from the original dish. For those who would love to savour a glass of their finest liquid concoctions, ask for the head sommelier for his recommendations or let the talented barman whip up something flavourful for Service is at the level of what’s to be expected at a venue that belongs to a Michelin-Starred chef – everyone is clued up on the food and eager to make recommendations. Professional yet personable - Bar Boulud epitomises everything we love about London, and everything we love about good food. TIME TO RELAX New York designer Adam D. Tihany, has overseen the redesign of the next-generation Spa. In keeping with the fresh new look, the extensive spa menu has also been enhanced to include exclusive partnerships with some of the most sought-after health and wellness experts in the world. The new spa features 13 individual treatments rooms, an Oriental Suite with two massage beds and a Rasul water temple, a room designed for traditional ASANTE Chinese Medicine consultations and treatments and a Bastien Gonzalez Pedi:Mani:Cure Studio – the first of its kind in the UK. Their is also a well-equipped gym and a lovely indoor pool to while away the hours. If walls could talk, this established hotel would have many stories to tell. The building was commissioned in the late 1880s however construction was initially delayed due to fears that its height would cast a shadow over the Serpentine. It finally opened in 1889 as an exclusive block of apartments for affluent bachelors, before opening as a hotel, with its own private Royal Entrance, in 1902. Since then, many honoured guests have passed through the hotel, and for several years after the Second World War it was the headquarters of the SAS. Glamorous parties and dance classes by the venerable Madame Vacani – who taught HRH Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Margaret to dance – have been held in the ballroom. Sir Winston Churchill lived in the hotel for a while and was known to offer room service waiters two cigars in return for the delivery of an early breakfast. Many of these momentous past events can be viewed in more detail in the newly created Historical Journey Exhibition on permanent display in the hotel. There is nothing we love more than hospitality that so flawlessly exceeds our expectations. The Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park, London did just that and then some - luxury living at its peak. ✤

AMAL SHINE With the award-winning and leading voice of fashion and lifestyle in the UAE capital, Amal Salameh LUXE ISLAND ESCAPE: ANANTARA LAYAN PHUKET RESORT First thing’s first. I fell in love with Phuket almost three years ago when we chose it as our honeymoon destination and, now, we wanted to come back to the land of smiles for a much-needed holiday this year which was kicked off at the Sala Pool Villa, number 26, at Anantara Layan Phuket Resort. If you’re wondering what made villa number 26 special and memorable, think serene lush gardens with birds chirping and a private pool in a luxury tropical ambience to wake up to everyday and scream holi-yay! The contemporary design of the resort is inspired by Thailand’s indigenous charms which blends into hillsides of lush, exotic landscapes and towering coconut trees. The resort itself is essentially self-sufficient as guests at Anantara Layan are spoilt with choice to relax, connect, refresh or discover with their extensive and detailed programme of Layan Signature Activities offered in their luxury beachfront resort overlooking the Andaman Sea – which is ideal for dreamy sunset sessions. From yoga at the hillside, to coconut leaf folding, flower garland making, and water sports – the list goes on and a section for activities to do on rainy days is also available. These small details show you that the resort goes above and beyond about their guest experience under all circumstances and don’t worry about finding space for your yoga mat in your suitcase, expect to find one in your dressing room, ready to use.

Each day began at the beachside restaurant with a breakfast buffet offering endless eastern and western favourites that didn’t disappoint. From live stations, to the healthy conscious stations and they even have a halal station. When it comes to dining, their signature restaurant Dee Plee offers authentic Thai cuisine that takes you on a culinary journey and they also offer a Spice Spoon cooking class with Chef Hong which was one of the highlight of our activities during our stay as I now proudly hold a certificate on how to make authentic Thai coconut soup, curry and the ultimate Thai favourite dessert – mango sticky rice. Another interactive and must do activity at Anantara Layan is their Muay Thai boxing class, with a boxing ring placed overlooking a serene waterfront and an instructor to take you through the basics of Muay Thai – it was a fun activity to take with my better half during our stay. And for an escape within an escape, the Anantara Spa offers rejuvenating wellness and pampering treatments accompanied by post treatment relaxation rooms and they even have a hair dressing salon to fix your locks. If this isn’t the epitome of a perfect summer holiday escape, I don’t know what is!

PAN-LATIN TEMPTATION VaKaVa , the new Pan-Latin restaurant concept that replaces Toro Toro at Jumeirah at Etihad Towers , comes to us from the same celebrity chef, Richard Sandoval. Set apart from the hotel

aKaVa’s interiors immediately capture the attention thanks to a visual assault of colours and textures! Similar in spirit to Coya, VaKaVa’s design offers vibrant textiles and elaborate chandeliers. We traverse a long corridor punctuated with skulls and a glass case housing an open fire, where all of the meat is prepared and cuts of succulent picanha twist above the open fire. Video screens shoot flames up the walls, pre-empting the frivolity and Latin flare of the evening ahead. We have some concerns, considering this very space has previously been home to three restaurant concepts (including one from celebrity Chef Michael Caines) in as many years. Call it opening hype, a strong marketing campaign, or sheer word of mouth but VaKaVa was very busy during our dinner on a Monday evening. This in itself is refreshing for Abu Dhabi, where it’s not uncommon to dine in a near-empty restaurant unless it’s a brunch. It takes some time to settle on a cocktail we like, as we plough our way through smoking theatrics and a roaming Caipirinha trolley (don’t miss the passion fruit version of the popular Brazilian cocktail). We find our groove with the exemplary Brazilian Breeze. a cocktail combining three kinds of rum and a cherry liqueur that’s set alight at the table. It should be noted that many of VaKaVa’s cocktails pack a punch when it comes to strength and ultimately add to the fun vibe of the space, complemented by the atmospheric soundtrack. The food menu follows suits and we do appreciate a concise offering that’s easily broken down into small sections. We begin with the sea bass coconut ceviche (AED75) a dish that we thoroughly enjoyed during the venues opening party a number of weeks earlier. Offering a fine blend of coriander, coconut milk and chilli, the flavour balance between sweet and heat is inspired. As a staple of Peruvian cuisine, ceviche is always a good measure of the quality of a South American restaurant and despite lacking a variation in texture, the flavours are certainly pleasing. The smoked guacamole (AED60) is another dish that shouldn’t be missed, despite the significant price increase from the Toro Toro menu. The mashed Mexican avocado smoked inside an elaborate bell jar is quite frankly the stuff of dreams. Our favourite dish from its predecessor, the short rib coca flatbread (AED80) also makes it onto this menu and presents shredded short rib beef on top of crispy flatbread and topped with a manchego cheese sour cream. The contrasting flavours are rich and would be our recommended order when paired with the thinly sliced beef tiradito (AED100) served with truffle tartare, chipotle ponzu sauce and shimeji mushroom. Fully embracing the sharing concept of the menu (it just works so well with these small plates and allows diners to try a little bit of everything) we share the Wagyu Grade 8-9 Ribeye (AED375). A reasonably priced cut of meat that is an absolute pleasure to eat. Tender, full of flavour and served with cinnamon sprinkled sweet potato fries. The Peruvian style grilled octopus (AED145) is just as good and balances the protein against a hard to pin sweetness that left

us wanting more. Never ones to miss dessert, we enjoyed both the chocolate fondant (AED55) complete with glorious ooze and the churros (AED55). Having been subjected to some rather poor churros over the years, VaKaVa’s are arguably one of the best in the city. Offering a dough that is crisp on the outside but almost fluffy within and served with a dulce de leche sauce. The only misstep is a goats cheese ice cream which just didn’t work for us, but we’re sure others may beg to differ. With an overwhelming positivity towards the food, we’re ecstatic

to note that the service has been vastly improved since its former food persona, even though some of the team members remain the same. Staff are now fully versed in the menu and display a friendliness towards guests which was missing before. The launch of VaKaVa is a welcome return for Pan-Latin food at Jumeirah at Etihad Towers and a triumphant return for Richard Sandoval to the capital. It’s a shame that with many of the items on the menu remaining unchanged, there has still been a significant price increase across the board - however, the quality is at its peak. With the recent closure of South American concept BU! it will be interesting to see how Abu Dhabi’s appetite for Pan-Latin cuisine stacks up in the coming months. ✤

TALES FROM INDIA
The opening of a new restaurant at Emirates Palace is a huge deal. The iconic hotel has become synonymous with unrestrained luxury since its opening 15 years ago and has in that time garnered a reputation for fine-dining, unparalleled levels of service and food adorned with edible gold. ringing ‘contemporary classic’ Indian cuisine to the five-star hotel thanks to acclaimed Chef Hemant Oberoi, Martabaan has been a project of passion. A man who is recognised as much for his innovative cuisine as his humanity and heroism, having helped dozens of guests to safety during the 2008 terror attacks at the Taj Hotel in Mumbai, Chef Oberoi’s illustrious career has seen him raise the bar as the Grand Chef of the legendary Taj Group of Hotels and his enviable guest list includes Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, Margaret Thatcher and the Duke of Edinburgh. The restaurant space begins with a corridor of ornate archways, on which the left side is flanked by a fully-licensed bar. Mixology forms an integral part of the Martabaan experience and the team of cocktail maestros are happy to concoct some of the most innovative beverages in the capital. Think toffee based mixtures adorned with popcorn and served inside coffee cups, or beguiling mocktails presented in coconut shells branded with the restaurant's simple logo. Being Emirates Palace, Martabaan’s dining room feels particularly regal. Decor is kept to a minimum with accents of gold and simple furnishing which are brought to life via vivid textiles and vibrant artworks. A terrace boasting spectacular views of the Arabian Gulf will likely be in demand once the weather cools down but we’re happy with our comfortable booth-style table in the centre of the dining room, from which we have a good view of the open kitchen.

Martabaan’s menu offers up a number of intriguing dishes which are showcased via striking presentation devices that have been all the rage on the Dubai dining scene for some time but are only just beginning to debut here in the capital. Some work better than others, with the kursi chaat (AED60) of particular note. Presented on small chairs, crispy papadi, yogurt, mango chutney and fruit leather jostle for attention upon the dollhouse furniture but ultimately pack quite a flavoursome punch to the palate. Another strong dish, the can can chicken (AED95) offers a tender chicken tikka in a beautiful butter sauce, yet the presentation within a tin can (which is opened table-side) works against the allure that the restaurant is so intent on achieving. Oberoi's penchant for strong flavours and his innovative recipes have impacted the Indian culinary world and take centre-stage in dishes such as the snow mushrooms (AED85). Presenting thinly chopped mushrooms, mixed with Indian spices and served with a mushroom soil in the shape of a mushroom. It’s a visual treat and one where the interplay between theatrics and flavour marry perfectly. Having mastered his craft over the past four decades, Chef Oberoi is clearly having fun with his cuisine and Martabaan affords him the opportunity of free-reign over a menu that is at times audacious. Paying tribute to the Middle Eastern location, his hummus Martabaan (AED65) makes for an exciting choice that perfectly balances the flavours of the Levant and India thanks to cumin chickpeas, pickled hummus and truffle. The humus is an impressive dish but one that could be excelled

by providing diners with more of the accompanying mini naan breads - bite sized morsels which are particularly moreish. As the name suggests the signature Martabaan is not to be missed! Referring to the large glazed jars traditionally used for food storage, the Martabaan ka meat (AED115) houses a piquant lamb that is undeniably tender and pleasantly appetising. Paired with a glass deg biryani in which the rice is served inside a glass bowl, makes for a visual treat through which we can see the distinct colourful layers. The main course feels aromatic, nostalgic and all at once homely, as Chef Oberoi weaves his culinary magic upon long-forgotten recipes, while updating them for the modern diner. Dessert leaves us feeling somewhat torn as we instantly fall in love with the depth and sweetness of the Masala chai creme brulee (AED45) and the Gulab jamun tiramisu (AED65). The latter offers an interesting take on the traditional Italian dessert by replacing the ladyfingers with soft gulab jamun that harmonises perfectly with the creamy layers. Martabaan certainly offers something new for the Palace and brings an exciting interpretation of Indian cuisine to the capital that has the potential to rival the likes of the already popular Tamba and Namak. As expected, the prices are reflective of not only the stellar service, but the ingredients and of course the location. Martabaan is definitely one to check out and brings an additional touch of luxury and excitement to the culinary canvas at Emirates Palace. ✤

this - focaccia and a flatbread with roasted garlic and baba ganoush. Declious. We also order the mixed olives which are perfect. There are so many good starters to choose from. They have an octopus carpaccio which is a favourite of ours that we've ordered before and the calamari with black ink tempura batter and garlic aioli is also amazing. We opt to try something different this time and go for the beef carpaccio and artichoke salad to share. The beef carpaccio is a real hit, wafer thin slices of fresh beef served up with roasted tomatoes and wartercress. We also love the salad with shaved artichoke, shaved almonds, dill and cucumber. Both were a perfect start to our meal, boosting the offering of revolutionary, tasty Greek food. There are so many great options for mains and we settle on the lamb

cutlets and the beef ragu pasta. The lamb cutlets come served beautifully on a wooden chopping board and are cooked nice and rare and pink. The cutlets are marinated in yoghurt and rosemary and have a light crumbing on them. The beef ragu pasta would have to be our favourite dish at Alba Terrace - al dente fettuccini cooked in butter and light cream is the base for melt-in-your-mouth beef ragu topped off with sautéed spinach and truffle. A must order dish. We are too full to indulge in dessert but the Sicilian cheesecake and rosewater pavlova would be our choice for sweets. Alba Terrace also have a fabulous Rose Brunch every Friday and they've slightly changed the menu and added a few more dishes in so be sure not to miss it, especially when the weather is good and you can sit outside. ✤

J
ades Concept Beauty Lounge is a relatively new salon in Abu Dhabi in Al Mamoura and has already proved very popular with both expats and local ladies. The concept of the salon is to build bridges between the art of science and the brilliance of beauty. The salon is a collaborative project with Aveda and the partnership strives to set an example for environmental leadership and responsibility in the world of beauty. With a unique vision of creating a boundary-less space of science, beauty, art and retail, Jades promotes modern day self care. Apart from being experts in hair, they also offer hair treatments, facials, waxing and nail care and they provide one-on-one consultations for each client ensuring all their beauty needs are met. On my visit, I am having a hair treatment and a blow-dry. If you’re not familiar with the Aveda concept, this brand is all about using plant-based products and pure essential oils with a commitment to the environment. Based on Ayurvedic principles, all treatments are ritual-based and designed to promote complete holistic beauty. My visit started with an Aveda tea ritual – a soothing cup of caffeine free tea created to calm and relax you. 96

You then get to choose an Aveda oil for your head and scalp massage (its a tough choice between Stress-Fix and Shampure but I go for Stress-Fix). My neck and scalp is massaged and this the perfect prelude to the hair treatment. For my hair treatment it’s recommended that I have Damage Remedy which is one of Aveda's most popular products and treatments. This will help to soften restore and brighten our hair and get it back in good condition. I move to the sink which is very comfortable with a lovely blanket and first my hair is washed before the treatment is applied. The treatment is then massaged in and I'm left to leave it to sink in and get to work. Once it’s washed out it's time for my blow-dry. Dragana who is the stylist is truly amazing and knows hair very well. Even though my hair is still wet I can see how much better it looks already from the treatment. Dragana starts by applying some of the Aveda products that will help with our blow dry including Volume Tonic. She expertly blow-dries by locks and then runs the GHD iron over the difficult bits to ensure it won't frizz. My hair looks healthy, shiny and vibrant. The blow-dry is brilliant and I’m extremely happy with the results. The salon also offers Essie polishes for nail services along with massage, waxing and lash and brow tinting. Adding elevation to the customer experience, the concept boutique supports regional and local designers such as Manal Hammadi, The Moroccans, Nohma Design and more with a range of abayas, shoes, jewellery - all of which represent a new level of style to the region. As well as a workshop space that allows people to come together and get inspired, with its work friendly, interactive atmosphere and cool interior accents of style guides and art books, encouraging creativity.
