Singletons, and anyone who sees February 14 as nothing more than a commercial

Now, let’s talk about the main man of the moment – Mr. Cristiano Ronaldo. He’s

just been announced as the world ambassador for fashion brand Sacoor Brothers, and we caught up with the Portuguese footballer to talk 2014 highlights, style musts and future goals (p19).

This month we meet Lindsay Mackenzie, the founder of Everyday Middle East.

Berber Women of Morocco

Q a l’at A l B a h ra i n T h r ou g h T he A g e s If you haven’t already been down to check out this cool interactive installation project then make sure it’s one for the diary this month. Qal’at Al Bahrain through the Ages is conceived by French artist Marie-Françoise Rouy and French composer and sound designer Luc Martinez, with Guest Japanese artist Chiharu Shiota. The artistic scenography aims to enhance the visitors’ experience of Qal’at Al Bahrain site and raise awareness about its historical significance. The project consists of six engraved-glass steles and three art installations. The steles, placed in the lower courtyard of the fort, introduce the visitors to the history of the site and its historical development. Three installations (Enki’s Well, Madbasa and Threads of Memory), placed in different rooms of the fort, represent an artistic interpretation of the site using cutting-edge technologies. GO: Visit the interactive installation at the Qal’t Al Bahrain Site from 8am to 8pm. The exhibition runs until April. 12

As part of the 2015 “Year of Heritage” festivities, which will run throughout the year across Bahrain, a fantastic new exhibition dubbed “Berber Women of Morocco” is currently running at the Bahrain National Museum, in collaboration with Pierre Bergé, Yves Saint Laurent Foundation, the Jardin Majorelle and the Musée du Quai Branly. The Berber (Amazigh) identity developed thousands of years ago on a vast territory that stretches from Morocco’s Atlantic coast to the borders of the eastern Maghreb. Over the millennia it has proven as remarkably resilient to cultural mixing with other Mediterranean civilisations as to various conquests. Throughout history, women have been the guardians of traditions and language, ensuring the preservation of the tribes’ cultural heritage. Transmission has been guaranteed by many symbols that can be found in weaving (the exclusive province of Berber women), jewellery, wickerwork, pottery, tattoos, and henna body painting. An invitation to travel into the heart of Morocco and Berber culture, this exhibition presents the beautiful objects, such as carpets, capes, woven belts, necklaces of amber and coral, and silver fibulae, predominantly from the sumptuous collection of the Jardin Majorelle’s Musée Berbère in Marrakech and Musée du Quai Branly in Paris. Together with stunning archival photographs, it is a tribute to the women who have never ceased transmitting the Berber culture’s singular identity. GO: Visit the Berber Women of Morocco exhibition at Bahrain National Museum from 8am to 8pm. Runs until April 15.

“I’ve had a lot of happy years with my performance, both individually and as a team player. I’ve had lots of brilliant moments with regards to goals, and titles too, so it’s not easy to choose just one. So, what I usually say is that the most important goal is always the last one. ”

There are names that mark an era that stand out for their talent, their achievements, or the legacy they leave to future generations. But there are also those who, while doing all this, still manage to write their names in the history books, where they will be remembered and celebrated for many years to come. Cristiano Ronaldo is one of those people. With his exceptional talent, allied to uncommon persistence and dedication, Cristiano Ronaldo will bring creative and aspirational values to Sacoor Brothers that only a personality with such a strong identity, and with one of the highest levels of world recognition, can give.

Established for 25 years, Sacoor Brothers has grown by defining trends and innovating services and products. With a personality that consumers identify with, the brand represents elegance and sophistication and has a distinctive code that has made it a premium, across-the-board brand.

H

i Cristiano! You recently won the Golden Shoe and the Ballon d’Or. Would you say that 2014 was the best year for your individual career? Possibly, yes. Both individually and as a team player, it was probably my best year. But I think I’ve had similar years in Manchester

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

and even in Real Madrid. That’s why I always make a positive assessment, both as a team player and individually. Maybe a bit more positive this year because we won the Champions League, the Super Copa... this may well be the best year in my career. What does the Ballon d’Or mean to you? It’s an individual trophy that every player dreams of winning one day. As you know, I won two awards and that makes it the culmination of a strong year, with a lot of hard work. In fact, it’s the seventh year that I’ve been in the top three in the world. And that makes me feel very proud. It’s a sign that I’ve had an extraordinary career and that

makes me very happy. You’ve experienced many important moments in football. Which of your scored goals was the most special? That’s a tough question. I’ve had a lot of happy years with my performance, both individually and as a team player. I’ve had lots of brilliant moments with regards to goals, and titles too, so it’s not easy to choose just one. So, what I usually say is that the most important goal is always the last one. How do you balance your personal and professional demands? Every day, I try to do whatever will benefit my performance. Obviously, it’s hard to reconcile some aspects, but I’ve learned to live with that constraint. I’m sure that in a few years’ time, I’ll be able to enjoy everything I’ve achieved over time. What do you do in your free time? It depends on the time, on the day, on the situation. It’s very relative. I have time to be with my family, my friends, my son. Having time for myself, my recuperation is important too. Especially for doing the things I like most, like swimming, doing stretching exercises. At night, I like being with friends, going out, and going to restaurants. Do you cook? No. I have people at home who cook better than me so I let them have the “opportunity”. What do you find really relaxing? Being able to feel at peace, at home with friends and with my family. I like it when I don’t have to get up early to go training or to play a match. And going to Madeira, back to your roots, is that always a good holiday? Madeira brings back a lot of memories. It’s where my family is. Should men take care of their appearance? Not as much as women, but I think a little is important. Do you follow fashion trends or do you prefer your own style? I prefer my own style, but I’m not so obtuse as not to listen to other opinions. What’s you favourite place to shop? On the Internet. What accessory can’t you live without? Watch, trainers, blazer, belt… a lot of things! Do you see yourself in the values of Sacoor Brothers? Of course I do. I’m happy that we’re starting this grand adventure together.

Commitment, dedication, family, success, always wanting more, excelling yourself... Are these the values you see in yourself ? Yes, definitely. I think we have to be part of the good things in life like family, friends, etc. You like taking part in charitable events whenever you can. Is that what being a star means? I think we can take advantage of the fact that we are public figures, loved by our fans. But, I hope they understand that you just can’t help everyone. In recent years, we’ve tried to help a lot of institutions. But, my opinion is that people who help don’t have to broadcast

“I think we can take advantage of the fact that we are public figures, loved by our fans. But, I hope they understand that you just can’t help everyone... as the saying goes: he who helps others is paid back twofold.”

it. Showing solidarity makes me feel good and, as the saying goes: he who helps others is paid back twofold. And that has happened in my life. In career terms, how would you like to be remembered in 30 years time? I want to be remembered as the best ever. I want to be up there with the best ever. That’s my aim and that’s what I’m building. Every year, I try to go further than before – and I’m not just talking about goals. In recent years, I’ve always improved. I’ve excelled myself and I want to keep doing that in the coming years. That’s why I’m convinced that I will be considered one of the best ever. GO: Visit www.sacoor.com to locate your nearest store in Bahrain fact magazine

Foodie Dates

foodi e l o v e Whether you want a lunch or dinner date, we tried out two of the best V-Day foodie offerings in Bahrain. Here’s what the FACT team found to make your dining date just perfect… Business Lunch Date Business lunch? Really? Though this might sound like a formal or even simple option to many of you, this is actually a fabulous option for busy bodies or those couples who want to try something a little romantic in the day. The Primavera business lunch is our recommended choice here. As a venue it’s absolutely gorgeous with stunning views out onto the Ritz-Carlton hotel’s gardens and surrounding water, whilst inside there are plenty of comfy seating options with large tables, and even a glass window looking into the kitchen area where the chef ’s prepare delicious food. The business menu at Primavera includes a choice of Starter or First course, a Main Course, Cheese or Dessert from the trolley and Espresso. We went for the starters and tried the Grilled Chicken and thyme salad, which was healthy and tasty, and the Beef Bresaola, which, accompanied by a side of juicy melon was absolute heaven. For Main Course the ‘catch of the day’ was our first choice; sea bass (yay) cooked to perfection, and the second dish we tried was the flavourful Linguine, tuna

and puttanesca sauce. A surprise awaited us; two special dishes prepared by the Michelin Starred Chef Oliver Glowig. One was a mix platter, with Fried arancini, ricotta and beef bacon calzone, ravioli capresi and potato croquettes; simply WOW, and Aubergine parmigiana, zucchini and cauliflower; unique and full of flavour (these will be additions to the new menu starting in March!). Dessert

was out of this world, as we went for the vanilla panacotta and the tiramisu. Couples will revel in the romantic atmosphere, which is made all the more special with superfriendly and attentive staff. If you’ve got tight work schedules but still want to spend some quality time for Valentine’s, business lunch at Primavera will deliver a quick loved-up escape.

Fondue for Two An intimate themed-dinner, perfect to use as an ice-breaker, the Swiss Fondue night at Mövenpick Hotel is a delightful experience. So, if Valentine’s Day is going to be a first date for you, we’d highly recommend this! Break-free from the traditional (and very expected) candle-lit dinner, and indulge in this amazing DIY foodie concept at Silk’s. The Swiss fondue night offers guests three varieties of fondue options, from which they can select what suits their taste buds. We were pleasantly surprised by the whole evening! The Cheese Fondue includes melted Appenzeller, Grueyere, Tomme de Savoy, white vino and French baguette to dip; it was an absolute joy, especially if you’re a

cheese lover. The Fondue Bourguignonne includes cubes of beef tenderloin dipped in hot oil served with Zucchini, Eggplant, Peppers and Mushrooms; pick up the pieces in your mini deep fry strainer and cook your food in front of your eyes! The French fries and fried rice made for delicious sides! The Fondue Chinoise includes Beef tenderloin, Chicken breast, Tiger prawns, Salmon fillet, which we dipped in rich broth Cabbage and bean sprouts; full of flavours and perfectly cooked. The Swiss Fondue Night is perfect for couples getting to know each other, or those who want to do something unusual for Valentine’s Day.

F u n F ac t s & Superstitions We read so many cool, and some rather bizarre, facts and superstitions about Valentine’s Day so we thought to share some of the most interesting and let you decide if they’re true or too far-fetched…

Secret Message Symbols associated with Valentine’s Day include: lace; love knots; lovebirds and doves; hearts, hands and “X”s. So, if you want to gesture the person you love, use these traditional symbols of love (or, try emojis!).

FLOWER POWER

The Language

of Flowers

Flower meanings and symbolisation were a key element to flower choice many years ago. The flower type and colour all represent different feelings dating back to old-school traditions, so if you’re planning on buying a lovedone a beautiful bunch of flowers this V-Day, take a look at which stem will help you convey the right message…

Orchid

The orchid is a mature flower and like its elegant appearance, the flower signifies exotic beauty, refinement and glorious femininity. This doesn’t mean that only older couples buy orchids, for the flower can be used to greet a beautiful lady, to show love, thoughtfulness, and if you’re using it in Chinese terms, it stands for ‘many children.’

Hyacinth

A flower made of tiny flowers, just as a hyacinth is an intriguing and pleasant flower, its meanings are also quite enjoyable. This flower symbolises playfulness, haste and downright attitude. The blue hyacinth shows loyalty; the purple is for sorrow, red or pink for play, white for loveliness and yellow for jealousy.

Rose

Definitely the most popular choice of flower to buy on Valentine’s Day, the Rose comes in a variety of colours, each representing different meanings. The red rose conveys romantic love as the colour red is associated with stimulating brain wave activity, increasing heart rate, respirations and blood pressure – this is basically for the flower to say ‘I love you!’ purple roses signify that the giver has fallen in love with the recipient at first sight. Coral and orange roses signal desire. Yellow roses stand for joy and friendship, whereas Pink roses express appreciation and White roses are a sign of humility. 30

fact magazine

Chrysanthemum

Iris

Not only is it the emblem of France, but the Iris embodies eloquence. The purple Iris is symbolic of wisdom and compliments; the blue one stands for faith and hope, while the yellow means passion and the white iris is for purity. This is the flower you gift to show wisdom, valour and compliments.

It’s a mouthful to say, but Chrysanthemum is a pretty flower, that usually takes a back seat to the Carnation. This flower often stands for joy, optimism and perfection. You would give the Chrysanthemum to show loyalty, happiness and to wish long life. A red chrysanthemum conveys love; a white chrysanthemum symbolises truth and faithful love, while a yellow chrysanthemum depicts slighted love (let’s hope you don’t have to give any of those).

FLOWER POWER

Tulip

This is not only the flower emblem of Holland, but the Tulip carries much significance. In general, tulips stand for fame and a perfect love. If you get a bunch of red tulips this Valentine’s Day then be pleasantly surprised, because this flower is a declaration of love, straight up. If your bouquet is multicoloured tulips, then the sender is complementing your beautiful eyes, whereas yellow tulips say you have a sunshine in your smile, or that you are the object of a hopeless love.

Gerbera

Just one Gerbera in a bouquet of flowers can make someone smile, that’s right, this flower very specifically conveys cheerfulness. It belongs to the daisy family, so also shares meanings of innocence, purity, love and loyalty.

Peony

Let’s get the bad out of the way – a peony has been long-known to symbolise shame, HOWEVER, this flower also doubles as positive meanings too. The peony represents compassion, happy life, happy marriage, good health and prosperity. We’re sure that adding a few pretty pink ones won’t mess up the bouquet.

Sunflower

Big and beautiful, the sunflower and its bright yellow petals can liven up any floral gift. It represents pure thoughts, adoration and dedication to love - great choice for a close friend.

Carnation

Like the Rose, the Carnation flower comes in a number of colours and definitely covers many emotions and feelings. Generally, Carnations were given as a sign of fascination, pride and beauty. Give a pink Carnation and you’re telling the receiver that you’ll never forget them; a red one and you’ll be showing your admiration for someone; a white Carnation has a number of meanings attached to it including, sweet and lovely, innocence, pure love, and good luck. On the opposite end is the yellow Carnation which, traditionally, signifies rejection or disappointment (you don’t want to be receiving a bunch of those!).

PANSY

Typically a garden flower, the Pansy is a small and pretty choice that signifies loving thoughts. A modest flower, it’s often called ‘viola’ or ‘violet’ and portrays your faithfulness to the recipient.

Lily

Have you noticed that a big bunch of flowers always needs a lily or two to make it complete? Well, this beautiful flower can bring a number of meanings to your floral message. It generally applauds purity and refined beauty. The white lily shows modesty, the orange lily stands for passion, while Lily of the Valley symbolises sweetness and purity of heart. This one’s great for both lovers and friends.

Anti-Valentine’s

L e t ’ s scop e it u p How many of you believe in horoscopes? At FACT we’re a divided bunch, and as it’s the month of love, we thought it would be fun to bring you a relationship outlook from both sides the believers and the sceptics – find out what your zodiac sign has planned for 2015…

Aries ♥ Lovescope

Get set for a year of serious passion potential, Aries! 2015 provides a once-in-twelve-years opportunity to meet and fall in love with someone who melts your heart.Singles, this is your year to find love..

☹ Horror-scope

Taurus ♥Lovescope

Get ready to unlock your heart and experience a fairytale kinda love. If you’re partnered up, your relationship lessons will focus more on creating a solid financial future with your love.

☹ Horror-scope

Leo

♥Lovescope

2015 will be a delightful year with plenty of romance to look forward to! Leos in committed relationships will spend quality time with their soul mates. Don’t be surprised if old lovers return for a reworking.

☹ Horror-scope

Romance is in the air this year, just over Southern Italy. If you don’t happen to be there, like, all the time, then chances are that you won’t be meeting anyone special in 2015. Singletons, forget love, it ain’t for you!

We see the colour orange in your stars, now whether that’s marmalade, beans (yes, it could be beans), or a fluffy toy, remember, your love life will never be a dreamy story. Oh, couples, you’ll be broke this year.

We see a light. It’s coming closer. Soon, you will see exactly what love holds for you. The light is blinding, so you might want to turn and run, because it’s bringing drama from your past. We think it’s a light, anyway.

Gemini

Cancer

Virgo

Gemini’s already in love, you’re being tested on your commitment level and ability to define boundaries. You like to keep it light! Singles, if you haven’t already landed your dream twin, you will.

Your love life continues to be crazy passionate and transformational, but thankfully this year some of the darker drama should be lighting up a bit. Love predictions will bring mixed fortunes, so be picky.

The first half of the year promises secretive yet incredibly glamourous opportunities for love and adventure. Most notably, September and October prove to be extremely busy in the love department.

♥Lovescope

☹ Horror-scope

There’s no problem when it comes to getting your own way with love, sometimes you have to be a bit evil. Thing is - you’re a natural at that. You’ll commit only if it involves diamonds. Lower your expectations, or you’ll be lucky to get even a plastic spoon. 36

fact magazine

♥Lovescope

☹ Horror-scope

S**t is about to get real. Heaven knows what kinds of things are going to happen in your love life this year. All we’re able to tell you is that it’s going to be hectic and possibly traumatic. Hold up, that could just be what’s going down on a TV show you’re watching.

♥Lovescope

☹ Horror-scope

From Jan to June, you’ll continue daydreaming about the perfect love whilst sat on the loo. Cheating will occur in 2015, but we’re unsure who’s at fault – it could, actually, just be in a game of cards. In laments term, this is not your year for love.

Anti-Valentine’s

Libra ♥Lovescope

Look for reliable mates who are sincere in love partnerships. Remember to build on your relationships with extra love, care, trust and romance. If you’re single, there is a strong likelihood of you meeting an old school friend through a coincidence.

☹ Horror-scope

Love is a wonderful thing that can truly change your life for the better. However, the chances of this happening to you anytime before 2016 are so remote that you might as well quit looking, go home and eat ice cream until your brain freezes.

Sagitarius Aquarius ♥Lovescope

Patience and tolerance is the key word for you to achieve success in relationships this year. Do spend ample time with your partner even if your spirit is weighed down heavily. A lot of socialising will help single sags bag a potential relationship.

☹ Horror-scope

Love sucks. Admit it. All that waiting, the getting to know each other, the sharing – ain’t nobody got time for that. It’s 2015, if you want to be a free spirit then spread your wings and say bye-bye to the person holding you down. Singles, do one thing, stay single.

♥Lovescope

Get your romance on before June because Saturn will steal your time away and push back into hardhitting career mode until September. There is no lack of opportunities for passion, the only question is, are you ready to let go of your fierce independence?

☹ Horror-scope

Love comes in all shapes and sizes. By the time you come to yours, all the good shapes and sizes will have gone. You may find love in unexpected places; however, it is equally likely that you’ll find love on ebay, for sale, at very low, low prices. Chin up.

“The vast majority, who believe in astrology and think that the planets have nothing better to do than form a code that will tell them whether tomorrow is a good day to close a business deal or not, become all the more excited and enthusiastic about the bilge when a group of astronomers denounces it.” - Isaac Asimov.

Scorpio Capricorn ♥Lovescope

In 2015, you will become more romantic, and filled with compassion and understanding towards your beloved. You will probably begin to make more sacrifices for the person you love, but the problem is that you will offer up too much for little in return.

☹ Horror-scope

When you think it’s true love it’ll turn right round to break your heart. You’ll be spending time drowning your sorrows by eating all your favourite foods. Remember, only love can break your heart... but trans-fatty acids will also have a damn good try.

♥Lovescope

This will be the year you finally have committed relationships with people you trust. The months of April and May are suitable for chasing and making new romantic alliances. Singles, it’s a good time to settle down for life.

☹ Horror-scope

You’re commitment phobia gets stronger this year. You’ll find yourself pining for romance, but in the end there’s only one love to satisfy your cravings – your love of food. Don’t get married; spending an entire lifetime with the same person is, actually, very boring.

Pisces ♥Lovescope

2015 is auspicious in matters of love and romance. After August, planets favour formation of relationships without much effort. Those in a confused situation will finally make the right decision in love. Singles, this is the ideal time to find your soul mate in a friend.

☹ Horror-scope

This is probably, actually, definitely, going to be your unluckiest year of love, ever. Alienate yourself from friends and family, because your quest for love will only become annoying. Singletons, it looks like another year of buying yourself birthday gifts. fact magazine

Representations of the Middle East are still, in large, a one-sided portrayal in the mainstream media. There’s an instagram page out to change that. FACT’s Shabana Adam chats to Lindsay Mackenzie, the founder of Everyday Middle East, a platform used for sharing images that redefine photographic representation of life in this region…

We all tend to use instagram to show off a delicious plate of food, our latest shopping buys, and, of course, endless selfies. But, for Lindsay Mackenzie, this social media outlet presented a whole new world of opportunities. Lindsay set up an account called @everydaymiddleeast in March 2014, in a bid to help dispell negative visual representations of the Middle East, and show followers what it’s really like to live in this part of the world, through the eyes of local photojournalists. The account, which has around 50,000 followers, has gained much recognition and is currently displaying 90 images from its Instagram feed, in a public exhibition, at the Gulf Photo Plus gallery space, in Alserkal Avenue, Dubai. The idea to have the exhibition came from the owner of Gulf Photo Plus, Mohamed Somji, who also happens to be one of the contributing photographers for Everyday Middle East. “The idea of Everyday Middle East is to create a space for photojournalists to publish ‘everyday’ images from the region,” Lindsay explains. “It’s a way to push back against the visual representation in the Western mainstream media of the Middle East and North Africa. “As working photographers, we’re often assigned to take images of the most extreme or exotic people, or circumstances, but we rarely have a chance to publish day-to-day images,” she continues. “So the Instagram feed - and exhibitions like this one - are a way to show more than just the worst cases, more than just the stereotypes, 40

But I think that is what makes the project interesting. It’s not one perspective or agenda but instead 25 different perspectives,” she says. The network of Everyday Projects, which includes Everyday Africa, Everyday Asia and Everyday USA, inspired Lindsay to start a platform for the Middle East. I ask why Instagram over all other social media channels? “Instagram is visual – it’s all about images – so it’s a natural fit for what we are trying to do,” Lindsay says. “We’re also showing that there is great work being done by photographers all across the Middle East and North Africa.

And that new technology and new media platforms like Instagram mean that it’s possible to re-imagine the representation of the region - and that anyone with a phone and an internet connection can be a part of that,” she adds. The efforts of Everyday Middle East are being appreciated the worldover, as Lindsay recalls: “The responses have been quite positive. One of the first comments we received from someone in the United States said, ‘We who live in the U.S. seem not to have a true picture of Middle Eastern life. This photo gallery of Everyday Middle East is helpful, interesting and fascinating. Thank you for creating it.’ We get comments like that from time to time.” The main challenge that Lindsay sees Everyday Middle East facing is one of funding, as to maintain the momentum of this project beyond social media will require some kind of monetary input. Up until now everyone involved in the project has participated without any kind of compensation. When it comes to future vision, Lindsay has a number of goals. “We’d like to continue to be part of a conversation about visual representation of the Middle East in the mainstream media,” she says. “One of my short-term goals is to get mobile phone cameras in the hands of people who can’t afford one themselves so that we can include their perspectives and show more of the ‘everyday’ beyond the affluent and urban. 42

“I’d love to give a mobile camera phone and provide internet access to a student in rural Yemen, or to a farmer in a small town in Algeria, for example, to broaden the everyday perspectives that we can show.” With such a beautiful aim and the determination to show a more realistic side of the Middle East, I’m sure that this is only the beginning of an exciting journey, for Lindsay, the contributing photographers, and Everyday Middle East.

Its narrow entwining streets and beautiful buildings and bridges make walking through Venice simply captivating. Get close to your loved one on an intimate gondola ride, and if you can, head to the Bridge of Sighs, which passes over Rio di Palazzo. Local legend says that any two people who kiss on a gondola at sunset, under the bridge, will be granted eternal love. Enjoy the unspoiled artworks by famous Renaissance artists or take in the sights of St. Mark’s Basilica, the Doge’s Palace and Rialto Bridge. Foodies

couples should head straight for Rialto Market where local tastes come alive!

Make your way to the heart of the city, the one spot where Marrakech is truly alive, Djemma el Fna Square. 1. Zagreb, Croatia Zagreb won’t be the first European city that pops to mind when you think of a romantic break, but if you and your other half, or if you’re single and travelling solo or with friends, this could very well be right up your street. Zagreb is very similar to the more popular cities of Budapest and Prague, but for those with alternative interests, Zagreb has the Museum of Broken Relationships up its sleeve. The museum has a simple concept. People who have recently left a relationship donate a sentimental item to the museum, with a short description of their break up story. The museum has collected hundreds of pieces and has received very positive media attention since its opening in 2010. With stories ranging from comical to heartbreaking, a museum tour can be a whirlwind of emotions and would provide a loved up couple a sure fire alternative for a romantic date.

2. Guangzhou, China While the main downtown districts of China’s third major city aren’t particularly romantic, you can appreciate your loved one in the city’s major wedding photography spot, Shamian Island. In Chinese tradition, wedding photos are taken before the actual wedding and presented as an album on the day. This beautiful and small island is where the majority of local nearly-weds take their snaps. The island has a selection of posh restaurants and cafes and would be perfect for a nice stroll. A visit to Xiaozhou Village will provide both a romantic and cultural experience, as you wander through the small winding paths and drop in and out of trinket shops. The village also has ancient ruins and historical buildings to enjoy. Xiaouzhou is still an active home for many local Chinese families, but some parts are a little rundown. Don’t be put off though, the village is certainly safe and this is simply a way of life.

3. Bruges, Belgium It’s common knowledge that chocolate is an aphrodisiac and the Belgians produce some the finest in the world. Bruges has the charms that most people look for in a European city, with architecture and museums galore. Choco Story, Bruges’ chocolate museum, couldn’t be any more central in the city and is great fun for 52

those looking for something a little quirkier. Belgium is also famous for its traditional chips and mayonnaise dish, so maybe this time you can swap the romantic lavish dinner for good ol’ street grub? Bruges fits that perfect fairytale medieval town picture with its cobbled lanes, winding canals, market squares, historic churches and whitewashed almshouses; what’s not to love? It might just become your favourite alternative romantic destination.

4. Baku, Azerbaijan If we’re talking about the tide changing then let us tell you this – there are few cities in the world that are changing as quickly and chaotically than Baku. It’s an amalgamation of cosmopolitan with shiny glass towers and flashy SUVs on the roads, mirrored by illuminated stone mansions and old Soviet apartments. So why go for a romantic getaway? Well, the real question is, why not? Baku is still scarcely touched by tourism so money-wise as well as when it comes to crowds, this would be the ideal time to visit. Couples can stroll through the fascinating UNESCOcertified Old City, hemmed in by an exotically cracked arc of fortress wall. Although Azerbaijan is an Islamic country, couples are often seen handholding and canoodling their way around the leafy parks and the Caspian-from bulvar (promenade).

5. Bellagio City, Lake Como Bellagio City is a dream location. It floats on clear waters at an intersection of the y-shaped Lake Como and is abundant with scenic views that could proudly stand as a strong fairy tale backdrop for any fantasy film. Its beautiful narrow streets, cute cafes and restaurants, and elegant shops, make this place ideal for escaping the strain and stresses of life at home. For couples, singletons or groups who want to experience something completely different, this place, which deserves its reputation as a playground for the wealthy can bring you the feeling of ultimate serenity that is so difficult to come by in the GCC!

6. Zanzibar, Africa

Who would have thought that an archipelago area off Africa’s coast could be one of the most

stunning and, still, quite untouched by tourism? Enter Zanzibar. The influence in this country will transport you through ancient Persia, the caliphates and sultans of the Arab world, and the aromas of India. Many of the stone town’s alleyways are dotted with Arabic-style buildings with beautiful wooden doors whilst along the coast you’ll find every type of landscape – from the tide, the hills, mangroves, farm plots, and breathtaking white-sand coves. Zanzibar has all the makings of a genuine romantic destination, as

couples can spend lazy days on the beach, getting pampered, and enjoying sunset dinners. Overdevelopment in some areas of Zanzibar have made its allure ever more elusive, so it’s best to visit now whilst the magic of this place remains. Big Screen

From A to B

Director: Ali F. Mostafa Cast: Fahad Albutairi, Shadi Alfons, Fadi Al-Rifai,

“ Now, Westerners won’t get all the chatter, but will definitely appreciate that the screenplay and writing strongly flirts with a number of subjects that are considered taboo in this region.”

Why it’s worth watching?

From A to B

What’s it about:

Young basketball hero Hady was killed five years earlier during air raids in Lebanon, a tragedy and trauma that his best friends can’t forget. The three estranged childhood pals (Omar, Ramy and DJ Yousef) set off on a four-day road trip from Abu Dhabi to Beirut, to visit Hady’s grave and work out their past. En-route the three share stories and laughter that may just bring them closer – or drive them crazy.

We’re so excited to see a UAE-produced film make headlines at a number of film festivals worldwide – we’re certainly showing some adoration for British-Emirati director Ali Mostafa (he also gave us City of Life) If anything, From A to B presents familiarity. That is, the everyday culture of the GCC where what is classed as “other” is discreetly (or not so discreetly) seeped in local life. Though audiences will walk away with their own perceptions, what stands out for us is the jokes, the spicy language, the gender gags, and, especially, the two hot female tourists! All of this, while the high school buddies travel through the exotic and perilous deserts of the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Syria. Now, Westerners won’t get all the chatter, but will definitely appreciate that the screenplay and writing strongly flirts with a number of subjects that are considered taboo in this region. Whereas, local audiences will connect to the film’s still safe and prudent plot lines. It is currently showing in a number of local cinemas. From A to B’s regional run is looking pretty rosy.

Director: Glenn Ficarra, John Requa Cast: Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Rodrigo Santoro Why it’s worth watching? Will Smith and Margot Robbie? *swoon Well, the film nailed it when it comes to the main cinematic ingredients of a romcom – two super attractive leads. And if you’re not going to watch Focus because both of the main characters are easy on the eye, then you’ll be pleased to hear that the storyline is pretty entertaining too. We really didn’t expect to see either Will Smith or Margot Robbie in these roles, anytime soon (or ever), but, hey, he does look dapper in a suit, and she’s got a rockin’ bod. Add in some slick action and romance scenes and voila! You have a mediocre film that will pull in the big bucks simply because of its attractive cast.

If This Is A Woman: Inside Ravensbruck By Sarah Helm

HIP-HOP/RAPPER ALTERNATIVE/ROCK

Smoke + Mirrors

By Imagine Dragons

It’s going to be pretty tough to follow

a debut album that made Imagine Dragons the biggest breakthrough band in early 2010, but the Las Vegas quartet is back with another musical offering. This sophmore release is a pretty special one; written and produced by the band, with help from Alex Da Kid in their self-built home studio. We’ve already heard the foot-stomping, hand-clapping I Bet My Life and the infectious Latin influence on Gold, and one thing’s for sure, the Dragons are changing it up a bit. Though there’s still that blend of modern rock energy, pop hooks and R&B-influenced production, the main momentum here is to push forward. Some of the standout tracks include the forceful I’m So Sorry with its hard-rock riffs, and the gentle piano sound of Dream (we can’t help but melt at the sound of frontman Dan Reynolds soulful crooning). You’ll have the ghostly-sounding The Fall on repeat, for sure. To simply put it, Smoke + Mirrors is a great effort from a band that doesn’t want to be pigeonholed.

Tetsuo & Youth

By Lupe Fiasco We’re going into this review as level-headed as possible – no huge expectations, no hate. The album opens with Summer, you hear the sound of children playing over a string piece, and one thought comes to mind, ‘this is going to be some real deep stuff.’ Yes, Lupe Fiasco has a talent for making you feel like you’re on a journey, and his musical repertoire like you’re getting a whole movie, and in this case, we’re all in! Lupe’s making some brave moves on this one. For instance, the nine-minute-long Mural is a beautiful instrumental with Lupe’s voice kicking in four minutes into the song; then there’s the banjobanging Dots & Lines, a love song with some bounce; also worth playing on repeat is the pace-changing, hard-rocking No Scratches featuring Nikki Jean; and Delivery featuring Ty Dolla $ign, both are straight up Fiasco joints. This is the Lupe you want to spend hours and hours listening to, getting sucked in and addicted to his wordplay, and commitment, to make complex music that is so easy to listen to. Thumbs up!

“This is the Lupe you want to spend hours and hours listening to, getting sucked in and addicted to his wordplay…”

For decades the story of Ravensbruck was hidden behind the Iron Curtain and today is still little known. It was on a spring morning in May 1939 when a company of 800 women from all walks of life – doctors, teachers, singers, housewives, politicians, prostitutes – were marched through woods, driven past lakes and herded through the giant gates of Ravensbruck, a concentration camp designed specifically for women by Heinrich Himmler, prime architect of the Nazi genocide. Using testimonies that back to the Cold War, and survivor interviews, Sarah Helm has infiltrated deep into the heart of this camp, one that makes for a riveting read.

KARAOKE IDOL

Drop the mic! Karaoke Idol 2014 proved to be another successful year for singing in Bahrain. FACT caught up with the newly-crowned winner Shanel Yammine to learn more about her idol experience…

Hi Shanel! What inspired you to enter Karaoke Idol 2014? I’ve always wanted to be on stage singing my heart out , and to express my feelings through songs. I saw the announcement for the Karaoke Idol competition, and thought I had what it takes to win it. Plus, it was a great opportunity to show my talent. Lately, I’ve been watching so many auditions for talent shows, and one, especially, took my breath away. That audition inspired and motivated me to take this step… It was Alexandra Burke’s audition from the X Factor UK. Tell us a little bit about your Karaoke Idol experience… The contestants on Karaoke Idol this year were so good. I couldn’t imagine me winning this competition so I was shocked when I did. It was amazing being on that stage performing. Which songs did you sing throughout the competition and do any of them hold special meaning for you? I participated a week before the finals. The song that I sang that night was “My Way” by the legend Frank Sinatra. For the finals I chose a different style and that song was “Call me when you’re sober” by Evanescence. After qualifying to the final three, I sang “Hurt” by Christina Aguilera. Among all of them the one that touches me very deep is “My Way”. This song reflects who I am because I like doing things in life in my own way! Even more than that, I translated my emotions into the song itself by singing half of it in high notes, more like opera, than performing it the traditional way. 58

fact magazine

Describe the atmosphere during the Karaoke Idol competition… Maybe the best moment of my whole entire life was performing to such a beautiful, respectful, and cheerful crowd who made me feel like being at home, and giving my best. I was comfortable! As well as the support of my husband for the last minutes and standing next to me, this made me feel so happy. He enjoyed watching me getting closer to what I’ve always wanted and my dream coming true!

Was Karaoke Idol something you did spontaneously or have you always had an interest in music and singing? I’ve always had an interest in music, singing, and acting. It’s the only thing that I wanted for so long. As you can tell, it’s my passion! How has winning Karaoke Idol changed your everyday life? My life has changed 360 degrees. It turned my thoughts upside down and I’ve proved to myself that I can be a STAR and achieve what I want if I work hard! Why do you think competitions like Karaoke Idol are good for Bahrain? These kind of activities are so good for Bahrain because it shows that this country is not just a beautiful touristic place, but it’s a country where you can show your talents and achieve your dreams. That’s why it attracts people from all over the world to live the best moments of their lives in an entertaining, joyful atmosphere. What is your advice for other Karaoke Idol hopefuls? Don’t let anything pull you down, practice, practice, practice... It’s the only way to make it, and most importantly, enjoy it... enjoy what you’re doing!

CITY RIDES

We take a drive in the 7th generation of Volkswagen’s iconic, and what many would call quintessential, hot hatch, to find out whether or not it lives up to its namesake. Although one of the very earliest, the Golf GTI wasn’t the first hot hatch. However, it was the huge success of the Golf GTI that defined the genre, and forever turned the diminutive family hatchback into something that every teenager in Europe wanted to drive. Hatches became racing cars, touring cars, and rally cars, surprising everyone with their agile performance, largely thanks to their low weight, squat stance and short overhangs. So, every new generation of the GTI has some enormously big shoes to fill to remain one of the genre defining models, especially in the face of some fierce 62

competition from the likes of Ford, Renault, and even Audi and Mercedes. But that’s one thing about Volkswagen – you can count on it to deliver, especially with the GTI. This generation of the Golf was awarded World Car of the Year at the New York Auto Show, and the Golf GTI itself won 2015 Motor Trend Car of the Year, and the 2015 Yahoo Motors Car of the Year. and sporty, and inside it’s spacious, comfortable and well-appointed. The GTI takes all this, and elevates it to another level. It takes a fully-optioned Golf, with leather seats, rear-parking camera, cruise control, excellent stereo with Bluetooth connectivity, steering wheel-mounted audio controls and more, and adds the extra spice of that GTI pedigree. This means VW’s 220hp 350Nm turbocharged direct-injection TSI petrol engine which will hit 100km/h in 6.5 seconds and reach a top speed of 244 km/h. This engine is superb, delivering impressive amounts of acceleration at both low and high speeds, with a satisfying growl that epitomises that GTI spirit. It also means VW’s excellent sixspeed automatic DSG gearbox, which works excellently in both normal and

sport modes, selecting gears with perfect accuracy, and keeping the revs high when you want to have some fun. It can also, of course, be controlled manually via steering wheel-mounted paddles, and the shifts are smooth and lightning quick. It means that agile Golf GTI handling, with an incredible amount of turn-in accuracy and balance, with surprisingly little understeer for a front-wheel drive car, and excessive

oversteer reigned in with its excellent stability control systems. And finally, it means GTI-exclusive badges, colours, alloy wheels and interior finish that all give subtle clues as to the car’s 38-year heritage. There was simply nothing to criticise about this car. Everything about it worked perfectly, and it was extremely enjoyable to drive. Many would argue that the Golf R is better, but they’d be wrong. Yes, it’s faster, but it’s also heavier, more expensive, and uses more fuel, and it really doesn’t translate into more enjoyment. I’ve compared the previous generation of both on a circuit in Bahrain, and the GTI felt more agile and nimble, and honestly, more fun to drive. For me, it’s the GTI every time!

Camera 3 A new rival to the GoPro comes in the shape of… well, a cube. v The Polaroid Cube presents a quirky new take on the action camera craze spearheaded by the GoPro. Does it compete? In a digital age where film cameras are almost completely obsolete, brands like Polaroid have had to adapt to survive. Polaroid’s USP in the past was cameras that produced instant hard copies of your pictures, but that was about it. The pictures weren’t that good, they were too small, and replacing the film was extortionately expensive. So what have they presented us with here? Well, immediate points go to them for form – the Polaroid Cube is instantly impressive with its shape and size. It’s tiny, at only 35mm on each side, and looks really funky in a variety of colours and the Polaroid rainbow stripe. It records 1080p HD video, with a 124-degree wide-angle lens and a battery life of up to 90 minutes, or 32GBworth of video, which is the maximum amount of Micro SD storage you can plug into it. Like the GoPro, it comes with a wide variety of accessories, like waterproof casings, mounts and magnets. However, it is still splash resistant without the casing, enough for watersports-type image capturing, but not scuba diving. It should be noted that the only thing that comes with the camera is a magnet. You’ll have to buy any other mounts and the Micro SD car yourself, but that’s pretty much the case with a GoPro. So, does it compete with the GoPro? No, not really – it only records five-minute clips and video quality is no way near as good. It is, on the other hand, very compact, user-friendly and much, MUCH cheaper than the GoPro, so it’s really horses for courses. Verdict: The Cube is for kicks, but the GoPro’s for the pros!

If there’s one trend making a mark for Spring/ Summer 2015, it’s the sugary sweet shades! We love these bright yet sophisticated bursts of colour which are awesome for a pretty and polished style.

Denim is certainly making a comeback for the Spring/Summer season in 2015. More importantly, we’re seeing more and more head-to-toe denim looks, with a pair of jeans and denim shirt being one of the hottest looks to strut in. The great thing about denim is that you can put your own stamp on it with all-blue accessories and footwear too, plus it’s still known as “everyman’s favourite fabric” with some of the strongest stitch-work in fashion.

Whether it’s vivid floral prints or a soft touch of floral, allow flowery prints to take over your entire look this Spring/Summer season. Pair flawy dresses with a funky floral bag, a chunky necklace and even some cool sunnies to complete the ultimate flower power style. The crotchet, the flares, the vibrant prints, the eye-popping accessories and the neon-bright makeup – it’s all about one big time warp with this look. The coolest thing about this retro style is that it can be pretty effortless and work well with items like a billowing boho dress, flared trousers, clashing prints and blinding gold, silver and bronze accessories.

Things are getting jazzy and going on the bend for Spring/Summer 2015 with asymmetric cuts and patterns. Spliced fabrics, bias cut forms, uneven hemlines, zig-zag patterns, and unexpected layers, all play a part in this trend. You can add a touch of this look to your everyday outfit with funky accessories or a killer pair of cutout heels. If you’re brave enough, go all-out with a dizzying tumble of fabrics, patterns and shapes.

FASHION ON TOP

Rewind twenty years and we’re in a decade when fashion was all about having fun. Fluorescent colours, flashy accessories, baggy garms, light-up trainers, combat boots, oversized printed tees and sweatshirts, and of course, those comic slogans and side caps. The 90s really was a decade for forbidden fashion! This no-brainer attitude of the 90s is bringing back a youthful spin this season, allowing all the men to get a little cheeky with their style.

Nothing beats a good, bold black, white or grey combo, especially when it plays with prints. Stripes and Aztec-symmetry is holding its ground in the fashion world, appearing on a number of runways including Xander Zhou, E. Tautz and Emporio Armani to name but a few. This look seems to help keep things sleek in our sometimes chaotic world, making it perfect for the day and for the evening. The trend can be nailed with just one simple striped shirt!

Although, usually, it’s the all-white look that never goes out of style, this upcoming season it’s the more humble shade of cream that graced the men’s runway. We always knew that cream was an understated colour, but it took just a few attention-grabbing designs (and models) to rock the look at fashion week, and boom! Cream is the new white, basically. This colour proves its staying power when a full headto-toe ensemble is carried off.

SHADE IT UP

Taking the tailoring trend to a whole new (and much more casual) level, there were more than just roped shoulders and slim trousers on the Spring/Summer 2015 runways. This comfortable style is a welcomed change, especially for the guys who have trouble with the heat during the season ahead. Go out and get yourself a pair of extra roomy bottoms, a loose top and some cool shoes. You can literally flex this look any time, it’s as easy, breezy as that.

One colour kits and mixed colour ensembles were given pride of place on the Spring/ Summer 2015 runways. If you thought combining contrast colours was a big no, think again. We’re talking lime greens, sunny yellows, electric pinks, sky blues, vivid violets, and rosy reds, all in bright, bold shades, and all worn together in one look. The key to getting this right is simple; you need to deck yourself out crayola crayon style and don’t hold back.

Whether it’s double denim, a slick suit for the office, a pair of trendy jeans or a nice t-shirt, blue clothing and accessories are a must this season. This is a hue that comes in so many quality fabrics for a multitude of looks. Simply team your plain trousers with a well-fitted royal blue tee; throw on a navy blazer over a white shirt; or keep it low-key with some sky blue loafers, getting the blues on has never been easier. It’s all about experimenting with blue!

Touch of beauty For all you beauty queens out there… FACT has your makeup needs covered this season from top to toe.

Get Party Ready

Love Therapy We totally heart the Sephora’s ‘Love Box’, which is a box full of passionate declaration of love. To make this collection both romantic and fun, Sephora has chosen the addictive Blue Lilac fragrance, and introduced a bubble bath and shower gel, along with a perfume to complete the gift box. Use the stickers to write a personalized love message on the shower gel bottle. We loved the word ‘Love’ suspended inside the fragrance bottle. Love is in the air this February.

Singles, who are heading to a glitterati party this valentine, must try the Bourjois Smoky Story Palette, which is available in six shades. Pick your dress, choose the palette that matches your outfit and be rest assured for perfect smoky eyes. In addition to three harmonious eye shadow shades, comes the Light Touch, an integrated transparent top coat; containing coordinated glitter, giving the smoky a little shine. Do the happy dance with Essie’s Winter collection and the ‘jump in my jumpsuit’ is our favourite. The jubilant juicy red is sure to kick up the heat of your look, this valentine. Doll up with a beautiful red dress, add some makeup and finally swipe the Essie polish on and you’re good to go! With six colours in the collection, the shades are lovely!

Jo Malone introduces the ‘Struck of Love’; the gift of Red Roses on Valentine’s Day. It is the essence of modern romance, captured in a blend inspired by seven of the world’s most exquisite roses, with crushed violet leaves and a hint of lemon. “My mum was very supportive and she tasted all the dishes I prepared” – Chef Anthony Gomes

Evolutionary Arabic Cooking Bayti restaurant has fast become a foodie favourite with diners who love Middle Eastern flavours and innovative dishes. The venue is cool and chic, and the man behind the menu, Sous chef Anthony Gomes, is breaking culinary boundaries with his team. FACT learns more…

CHEF’S TABLE

“My logic behind this is that when we present the dish to the guest, the appearance makes a first impression, and so, yes, it looks good. But, when they take a bite and if it doesn’t taste good, then the whole creation of the dish is not worth it”

T

he second we found out that one of the menu items we’ll be trying at Bayti is Chocolate Shawarma (yes, you heard right!) we were excited, intrigued, and really hyped up to be eating at the table of Chef Anthony Gomes and his team. We had barely sat down with our glass of Arabic Champagne (it’s exquisite), and the question popped up – “So, Chef, what is Chocolate Shawarma?” “It was the GM’s idea,” Chef Anthony smiles. “He loves desserts and he always wants us to be innovative and make what 84

fact magazine

you might think is impossible, possible. “He’ll have an idea, and he’ll support us through it. With the Chocolate Shawarma, you just really have to try it to know exactly what it is and how it tastes,” he says. Bayti as a venue is beautiful with a trendy and super chic ambience, successfully achieved through pop-art-style décor and quirky interiors like mismatched chairs and colourful wall murals. Chef Anthony brings to Bayti a wealth of experience. His professional cooking career started at the Taj Goa hotel, in India, where three years gained him knowledge and

practical experience in world cuisines such as Mediterranean, Italian, French, Indian and Lebanese. His multi-cuisine skills then took Chef Anthony to work onboard a Florida cruise line for six years. But, before all of this came to pass, Chef Anthony admits that his passion for cooking was alive since he childhood. “I loved watching cooking shows when I was young and I used to experiment at home,” he recalls. “My mum was very supportive and she tasted all the dishes I prepared. “She always said ‘just go for it! Do what you heart feels like.’ She always had my back and is definitely my biggest inspiration.” We notice Chef Anthony’s passion for Middle Eastern cuisine when the food starts coming out to the table. First up is Baba Ganoush – the eggplant is fresh and tasty, served with thin Arabic bread, this is actually a delightfully light starter. Next up is Chicken Liver, which is traditionally eaten for breakfast in Bahrain. The dish is deliciously tangy, and we can taste

the mix of onions, garlic and lemon juice, which makes our taste buds pop with joy. Up until now, both presentation and taste has been great. So, which is more important for Chef Anthony? “For me the taste of the food is most important,” he says. “My logic behind this is that when we present the dish to the guest, the appearance makes a first impression, and so, yes, it looks good. But, when they take a bite and if it doesn’t taste good, then the whole creation of the dish is not worth it,” he explains.

We move onto Gourmet Shawarma – a concept dish where diners can choose everything from their desired bread, choice of meat, and flavour of sauce. It’s presented on a wooden serving dish with pickles and tahine sauce, and let us tell you, it definitely tastes as good as it looks! Our favourite dish that Chef Anthony prepared was Pan-Seared Safi with sweet caramelised rice. The fish was tender and the taste of cardamom was a welcome delight. For dessert we opted for the crunchy Baklava and (*drum roll please), the elusive Chocolate Shawarma. Ok, imagine… every component on this dish was a replacement of what we were served on the Gourmet Shawarma – there was the wrap filled with Oreo and ice-cream, and on the sides it was pineapple chips and chocolate sauce. This was all dusted with cinnamon. One word: YUMMY. Chef Anthony’s right, you’ve got to try it for yourself. What we loved about Bayti is the creative approach to Arabic food. It’s fun, full of flavour and very tasty.

GO: Call Bayti on 1722 9778 for reservations and more information.

The Orangery •

Tea rooms and patisseries have long-become a dining favourite in may parts of the world. It was only a matter of time before Bahrain got its very own elegant offering. Shabana Adam heads to The Orangery, to see if this traditional tea room and patisserie has something different to entice diners‌

VENUE REVIEW

A quintessential tea room, combining English traditions with Middle Eastern tastes, where both the expat community and local people can indulge in a dreamy setting and exceptionally good food.

T

ea rooms have been immensely popular since the 20th century, when they were seen as fashionable places for women to meet their friends in small towns, big cities and suburbs alike. Back then, tea rooms popularised eating outdoors under colourful umbrellas, had peculiar animal-themed names (Blue Horse, Red Squirrel, Brown Owl and so on), served up beverages and light snacks, and boasted a cool and calm atmosphere. Enter The Orangery. Taking its name from the conservatories built in fashionable European residences, from the 17th to 19th centuries (historical reference gets a huge tick), this beautiful tea room and patisserie is tucked away on the grounds of the Palace Boutique Hotel. Walk around to the back of the building and your met with a façade that you could easily place in any European city. As far as first impressions go, this is quite special; you’ll feel like you’ve been transported to a pretty English park on a summer’s day, as a landscaped garden, complete with gazebo-terraced dining area, a courtyard, water features, stone statues, and umbrella-sheltered tables, greet you on arrival. Yes, this is really in Bahrain! Inside, the venue is, simply, magnificent. Borrowing décor and design elements of a traditional English tea room, there are oversized and super comfy arm chairs, mural88

VENUE REVIEW

style wall art, hanging frames, big plant pots, and a refreshingly airy feel with neutral colours and plenty of natural light beaming in through the windows. But, of course, we are in the Middle East, and that means there will be a twist! This comes in the form of an extensive a la carte menu, developed to perfectly balance the classic English concept with local Arabic flavours. For example, you can choose from artisan breads, delicious cakes, tarts, macaroons, and viennoiserie, all of which represent the sweet side of classic Europe, whilst Syrian chef Yousef, and his team, bring savoury options for breakfast, lunch and dinner, infused with delectable Syrian and Lebanese flavours.

If you want to satisfy your morning cravings, go for the aptly-named The Orangery Breakfast. It’s got croissants, danish, sweet roll, toast, eggs coked your way, cheese, fruit, homemade condiments, and hot or cold beverages of your choice. One of the FACT team’s absolute favourite dishes was the Syrian Frittata; possibly the best baked omelette we’ve ever tasted. It was packed with Middle Eastern herbs and spices and topped with labneh – SO SO tasty. If you’ve got more of a sweet tooth then tuck into the Traditional Afternoon Tea, complete with a selection of sandwiches, scones with cream and jam, cakes and pastries, and a pot of tea for two, all for a cool BD13.5!

The menu at The Orangery won’t disappoint; there are salads, sandwiches, sharing plates, healthy juices, and even a huge selection of world teas and other hot beverages. Who’d have thought this for Bahrain? None other than the team behind Masso, that’s who! The Orangery works because there’s really nothing like it on the island. It stays true to tea room origins with its interiors and menu, and just like a hundred years ago, this tea room will surely bring together friends, families and foodies alike.

ice is a unique venue, overlooking the beautiful Arabian Gulf, with a great location amidst designer boutique and department stores in Moda Mall. To compliment the lavish location, the restaurant is impeccably designed with modern and subtle coloured interiors. There’s a luxurious staircase leading to the elegant and cosy restaurant/lounge, and once you’re there, it’s a world away from the Manama bustle of shoppers. Welcomed by the friendly team at Bice, including the lovely owner himself, we were extremely excited to see what culinary creations the menu had to offer. The first thing that caught our attention was the interior of the venue; huge floor to ceiling windows, large tables with super comfy seating in stylish chairs, and the neutral, earthy colours earned this place major foodie points.

Foodie corner

“The first thing that caught our attention was the interior of the venue; huge floor to ceiling windows, large tables with super comfy seating...”

Bice’s sophisticated and delicious food filled us up to the brim. Though it’s hard to select favourites from everything we tried, we’ll highlight some standouts that you MUST order on your next visit there. Feeling right at home, we got down to the food tasting!

OUR RECOMMENDATIONS First came the appetisers, which included the beautifully-presented and equally tasty Parmigiana di Melazane (a signature dish); baked eggplant with layers of mozzarella in tomato and basil sauce. This was literally melt-in-the-mouth; the flavours were alive with each component of the dish nicely complemented the other. But, the real food pleasure came in the form of what we like to call the champion of all cheese – the Burrata Campana; organic fresh Burrata cheese form Puglia with Roman

Puntarelle salad and anchovy sauce; it was creamy, soft, and absolutely mouthwatering (hardcore cheese lovers, this one’s for you!). With big smiles on our face, we await the main courses. First up is the Branzino all’Isolana; superb in presentation, and even more so is taste. This dish is; Mediterranean sea bass with black olives, potatoes, cherry tomatoes and thyme. It was crispy on the outside and tender on inside – can we get a mmmh? Up next was the Costoletta di Vitello alla Milanese; pounded and breaded veal chop served with arugula salad and cherry tomatoes. This crispy fried veal was a one-of-a-kind main for us; it was so perfectly cooked and full of lingering flavours. Moving onto dessert - always our favourite part of a meal and this was no exception. The Italian speciality – Tiramisu – stole our little foodie hearts. It was so rich with flavour and every mouthful was a treat for the taste buds. The apple strudel with vanilla ice-cream and raspberry sauce was, to put it simply, divine (you’ll be craving for the raspberry sauce recipe, it’s SO good!). The owner insisted that we try the trio of sorbets, and what a good decision we made to say yes! There was mandarin, mango and lemon sorbet, a colourful and flavourful cold treat. If you want to play it safe but still want something yummy, go for the panna cotta with raspberry sauce. Our dining experience at Bice was simply amazing. This restaurant and its staff make each moment special with their personal attention to detail and their attentive nature. We were happily full and walked out of the restaurant with big smiles and satisfied taste buds. And that, everyone, is how a really decent dining experience should be. Pallavi Ramesh heads to Dessange in Adliya for a pamper session… Also, a big shout-out to men; this escapade is an amazing gift for your lady on Valentine’s Day!

N

uzzled in the busy area of Adliya, Dessange caters to women with the need for relaxation. It’s spa treatments are extremely effective and appealing for busy bodies who need to slow down a little, de-stress, and rejuvenate. There’s also a fabulous salon that can cater for your beauty needs, head-to-toe. The package especially designed for me to try, combined the best of both these worlds with Hydro-therapy, Moroccan Bath, Manicure, Pedicure and Blow Dry. Without wasting any time, I headed to the locker room to secure my belongings and get spa-ready for my treatments.

HEALTH & WELLBEING

Hydro Therapy - Detox Ocean Bath (30 minutes)

This 30-minute bliss begins with water jets shooting along for an underwater massage - great for pain relief. Absolutely therapeutic - the temperature and pressure stimulates blood circulation (you will be thirsty, so fill up on water beforehand or down a few glasses afterwards to re-hydrate). This treatment is the perfect start to a spa retreat, as it relives you from stress and puts you in relaxation mode for an enjoyable spa experience.

Moroccan Bath – Scrub only (30 minutes)

First time for me, so the thrill of coming clean (pun intended) made me happy! Moroccan bath is a fantastic way to exfoliate even the driest dullest skin using an exclusive range of Moroccan oils, herbs, and black soap. This is a luxury you cannot afford to go without! Begins with exfoliation after which were few minutes in the steam room, for the pores to open up. Now comes the scrub-a-dub-dub! The

attendant put on her Kassa glove (you can bring your own) and sloughed of dead cells by scrubbing the whole body, to reveal baby soft new skin. You feel the difference that very minute! After a quick shower I was off to beautify myself.

Manicure and Pedicure (30 minutes)

Hands and feet are ignored and overused parts of the body (at least by me). They need to be pampered and taken care off, so what better than the gift of manicure and pedicure to them! Sipping a freshly made pineapple juice, I enjoyed this session (thank you team Dessange). The therapists began with filing, shaping and clipping my nails. Soaked my hands in water for a few minutes and sorted out my cuticles leaving my nails smooth and shiny. Then came moisturisation, and prepping for nail

polish. After swooping the base coat, they gently applied my choice of black polish and voila! Beautiful nails once again!

Hair wash and Blow Dry (30 minutes)

After the Moroccan bath, my hair was damp and needed a hair wash. After a soothing hair wash, the stylist was up to give me a darn good look, for which I was excited. “You’re hair needs volume” she said! She applied hair mousse for volume and styled my hair beautifully. I loved it, and wished it could be the same always. The entire session at Dessange was an amazing experience. It’s affordable and the perfect escape from busy Bahrain life. I highly recommend each and every woman to head to Dessange and enjoy this pamper session for yourself. PEP TALK

H ealth Tal k : D epression By Dr. Gardenia Al Saffar: Consultant – Psychiatry

Depression affects three hundred and fifty million people in the world. It is twice as common in women as in men, with many factors contributing to the uneven gender distribution. On the biological level, a stronger genetic predisposition and hormone fluctuations, especially at times of childbirth and menopause, make women more likely to become depressed. Psychologically, they prioritise relationships more than men, and relationship difficulties are one of the primary precipitating factors for depression. Women also tend to overthink things and ruminate over difficult issues leading them to become depressed more than men. On the social level, women nowadays deal with more stressors than men since not only are they responsible for managing their homes and children and caring for their older relatives, they are subject to the demands of the workplace and careers that are equally as important. The word “depression” is commonly misused. People being in a bad mood because of a bad hair day, or sadness because of an argument as being “depressed”. Depression is not a fleeting state of mind. It is a disorder that can only be professionally diagnosed when its symptoms are present most of the time for a minimum of two weeks. It affects all aspects of your life making it difficult to function on a personal, social and occupational level. It consists of overwhelming fatigue, low mood, and tearfulness or irritability that are associated with 96

fact magazine

loss of interest and enjoyment in activities that you usually find pleasurable. It impacts your biological functioning including your appetite, sleep, which are either significantly decreased or increased, and sexual function. It colours your perspective with unshakeable guilt and feelings of hopelessness and helplessness. It interferes with your cognitive functioning, resulting in poor concentration and feeling that your memory is impaired. In its most severe forms it manifests with death wishes and suicidal ideas. Depression is not a weakness or a personality flaw. It is a disease that when recognised and treated can fully remit with complete recovery. Its treatment includes antidepressants and psychosocial support such as cognitive behavioural therapy, interpersonal therapy, and problem solving. It is a proven fact that majority of patients treated for depression with antidepressants improve. Yet, in spite of that, most people with depression don’t manage to get the treatment they need. In our part of the world, many people avoid reaching out and seeking help due to the stigma associated with mental illness. Nowadays information and help are easily accessible, so a common disorder like depression should not be left untreated. Each of us has a responsibility to educate ourselves and others about depression so we don’t suffer alone and in silence. THE ENCHANTED ONE

Georgina Jennsen Georgina Jennsen is the blogger behind the popular lifestyle blog, Blonde in Bahrain. Georgina loves all things beautiful and luxurious. What are you doing for Valentine’s Day this year? My wish for you, is that you’ll be doing something more romantic than me. I’ll be spending mine on that never-ending 13hour flight from Melbourne to Abu Dhabi. Surrounded by a few hundred people, but very much alone. Boooo! If however, you are on terra firma, and have someone to lavish some loving on, why not make the most of it. Here are a few ideas to suit all budgets that will help you do just that. Big spender? Celebrate your love with an evening (or three) in one of Bahrain’s 5 star hotels. How about the brand-new and very beautiful ART Rotana with its super-sophisticated cocktail lounge. Mr. Sensible? Book in for a couples massage followed by dinner. Short arms and deep pockets? Think flowers. Roses, red, and more than just one. I know it’s a cliché, but she’ll love you for it. Happy Valentine’s Day lovers!

Realistic Goals

Love Is In The Air

Yvonne Cole, Personal Trainer, believes that when you eat clean, train hard and trust the process, your consistency and patience pays off…

Christal Dennis is a Personal Performance Coach and Hypnotherapist. She is dedicated to helping people overcome life’s hurdles and tapping into their deepest potential...

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again “SET REALISTIC GOALS”. If you’re 25kg over weight don’t expect to lose that weight in three months because you bought a dress that you were hoping to fit into then you discovered that the wishing and hoping diet doesn’t work. It’s a combination of good nutrition and exercise, which equals a life style change. Time and time again I come across people who have over reaching goals; they set goals that sound really good but they are just not attainable in the time frame they have given themselves. If you know there is an event coming up in 6 months don’t wait until 8 weeks before the event to get ready for it take the whole 6 months as setting unrealistic goal will just hurt you far more in the end than they will help you. Shrink your goals to things that are attainable and realistic like taking out

With Valentine’s Day around the corner we have a good excuse to do something romantic with our loved ones. Now if you are someone that does not need Valentine’s Day to be romantic then hats off to you. For those of you who are unsure about what you will be doing on Valentine’s Day and think that you will just do the default bunch of flowers and dinner, here are a few ideas that could help you create a unique and special day. When planning to do something special for someone, it’s easy to ask yourself: “What would I find special and romantic?” Maybe in the past you may have noticed that going about things this way does not always leave your special person overwhelmed with appreciation for all the effort you’ve done. The reason for this is that you could ask yourself a better question. “What would my partner find special and romantic?” Having asked yourself this question, you can then go about answering this question in a very conscious way. You can do

the junk food from your diet, increasing the intensity of your workouts change your breakfast to a more filling one or just taking on more water. Remember on the journey to your end goal you need to build a solid foundation not a rocky one. So pick a plan that will actually fit into your lifestyle and will add things to your life to make it a better one. GO: Email ymcfitness@gmail.com or call 3935 9105 for more information.

this by listening carefully to what your partner says. Ask your partner questions that will get them day dreaming about what they would really enjoy. If your partner mentions something that sounds strange, silly or insignificant, don’t reject what they’ve mentioned as something that could not possibly be important to them, because in all likelihood if you make one of these little dreams come true your partner could very possibly be deeply touched. Having done all this, you will not only have created a very special moment but you partner will feel heard, appreciated and loved. No small feat! Recommend some hidden gems in Bahrain for Visitors? I think visitors cannot come and leave Bahrain without going for Go-karting at the BIC. Camping in Sakhir is during winters is a must; with the barbecue, music, friends and family, as well as boating around the whole island is one of the things I would recommend for visitors.

Recommend three Foodie Hotspots in Bahrain? I like the Amwaj Restaurants as they have a variety of Oriental, European and Fareast cuisines. I love the Egyptian 106 fact magazine

or spa for some pampering is always been my ideal relaxation time.

Describe your ideal day off?

Tell us three things you enjoy the most about living in Bahrain?

I spend the whole time with my family and sometimes with close friends. It is the best thing and the way to spend a day off.

Where/ Which places would you go for Rest & Relaxation in Bahrain? Amwaj Lagoon is one of my family’s favourite spot to relax during the weekend; a morning walk with the children is usual. Alone time at the salon

Bahrain has lots of hidden places to explore like Arad sea side. Bahraini people are very kind and are welcoming to expats. I feel secured and safe and I can go out alone without worrying. Bahrain has a variety of places which suit all ages and all nationalities with pretty affordable costs, gives the country a very big advantage than other countries in the region.
