Fun In The Sun

“Everything good, everything magical happens between the months of June and August.” – Jenny Han

I

t’s summer in the city and though it’s hot, hot, hot, I can’t help but smile as I see social media posts from back home in the UK and Europe as friends, having spent the winter complaining about the cold wet weather, are now complaining about the heat. And, yes, I know that we’re better prepared here with 24/7 air conditioning from our cars to our homes and entertainment

venues, but sometimes I can’t help but think it’s a case of ‘be careful what you wish for, folks’. Speaking of being prepared for summer, if you’re a parent who’s staying on the island for summer, we’ve got you covered with a comprehensive round-up of summer camps to keep the kids busy during the blistering August days. We’ve checked out several restaurants to give you our verdict on some of the best food around and I was particularly excited to see this month’s Island Rides, the new BMW Z4 – there’s a little nostalgia there for me and it looks as if the new version is a great improvement while staying true to the nifty little roadster I fell in love with all those years ago. I also enjoyed reading our travel feature on the Czech Republic – which brought forth a little bit more nostalgia as I’ve visited several times over the years and can highly recommend it. Elsewhere, you’ll find our usual round-ups of news from the worlds of motoring, tech, fashion, beauty and more as well as a sneak peek at what’s on offer at the new Hilton Bahrain, which is opening its doors this month. Happy summer reading all.

If you’re one of those who thinks Bahrain doesn’t have good enough beaches, think again! The Bahrain Beach Festival was inaugurated by the Minister of Tourism, HE Fatima bint Jafar Al Sairafi, at Bilaj Al Jazayer. This is the first event of its kind organised by the Bahrain Tourism and Exhibition Authority (BTEA) as part of its efforts to enrich the summer season in the Kingdom. It features several fun activities and events to attract tourists and visitors, in addition to encouraging internal tourism for citizens and residents. The festival started at Bilaj Al Jazayer, in collaboration with other distinctive beaches such as Marassi Beach and Water Garden City Beach. It will continue until August 27, incorporating a full programme of events such as live music acts, children's activities and games, a variety of food trucks and vendors and plenty of photo opportunities. Bilaj Al Jazayer has a BD2 entrance fee. The Minister said: “This festival comes within the framework of the BTEA’s programme, which includes various activities that attract tourists, citizens and residents throughout the year. We aim to activate the potential of Bahraini beaches as a mainstay of tourist attractions in the Kingdom, and we invite everyone to go to the festival.” She also pointed out that this festival comes to support the private tourism sector’s facilities in the Kingdom. Culture. This gorgeous venue has a high ceiling designed to look like a starry sky. With an extensive international menu and grape list, you’re guaranteed palate pleasers at breakfast, lunch and dinner. In the evening, take a trip to Cocoluna, the uber-chic hubbly bubbly lounge where you’ll find gorgeous views, chilled music and genius mixology… what more could you want? 3. Furry friends are welcome! This one is a big plus point for us here at FACT. We’re delighted to tell you that Hilton Bahrain welcomes the WHOLE family – yes, even your pets. 4. The interiors are gorgeous. Let’s face it, when you book into a hotel, you want to feel a bit spoiled and the décor and design at Hilton Bahrain go a long way to achieving that. The interior design took inspiration from the beautiful history of Bahrain with elements of black gold, aquamarine for its surrounding seas and the exotic shades of pearls. Local touches are in sharp contrast to a modern edge that gives an overall classy feel that tells you you’re visiting somewhere special. 5. Another one that definitely gets FACT’s vote – they take sustainability seriously. Hilton Bahrain is a big supporter of Hilton’s Travel with Purpose, the company’s environmental, social and governance strategy to drive responsible travel and tourism. The hotel is committed to 0% single-use plastic, there are sustainable amenities, renewable energy and even some of the team members’ uniforms and footwear are made of recycled materials! Now that’s what we call sustainable! 6. The views, oh the views. Did we mention that the hotel is 45-storeys high? That guarantees you fabulous views of the surrounding sea whether you’re in your room, the restaurant or even in the meeting rooms. 7. Location, location, location. Hilton Bahrain is found in the heart of the country’s entertainment district, Juffair. Surrounded by restaurants, malls and other must-see places, whether you’re staying for a few days or planning to make this your home, you’re sure to have easy access to all your necessities any time of the day. 8. Stay and earn. We love that you can earn redeemable points for every stay! Talk about a win-win situation. Hilton Bahrain is part of the world-famous loyalty programme, Hilton Honors. This means that while you’re enjoying your experiences at the hotel, you’re also racking up points for your next Hilton vacation. What’s not to like? 9. Digital check-in. Keep losing your keycard? Well, if that’s you, there’s no need to worry. Hilton Bahrain offers digital check-in technology that allows you to use your own mobile to access your room. Smart, eh? They believe staycations are too short to be searching for keys and we couldn’t agree more. 10. The warm hospitality of Hilton Bahrain’s team. With all the perks many hotels offer, at the end of the day what sets a hotel apart is the quality of service and hospitality they provide. Hilton Bahrain promises a genuine welcome to each and every guest with team members’ warm smiles and tailored experiences. Intrigued? Check it out and experience Hilton Bahrain yourself, it’s open in Juffair in August. ✤

I

t’s hard to believe it’s been 20 years since automobile giants, BMW, released their very first generation Z4. From day one, this stylish two-seater proved to be an exceedingly popular German roadster, with its sporty good looks and highperformance capabilities. Fast forward to 2022 and BMW have just released their much anticipated, fourth-generation BMW Z4. This month, FACT magazine received the honour of test-driving the latest BMW Z4 sDrive30i, compliments of the team at BMW Bahrain. Exterior: The exceptionally stylish exterior of the new Z4 exudes confidence and sporty prowess. This legendary car is everything we’ve come to know and love about the Z4, except it now boasts several upgrades including an even more impressive external design. Despite all the improvements, there is no mistaking what model car this is, especially from the front end. The elongated clamshell bonnet that is synonymous with the Z4 features arrow-shaped contour lines that draw the eye towards the front grille. The broad, new-look mesh design, BMW kidney grille combines a track-inspired honeycomb pattern with a three-dimensional structure, giving the Z4 an ultra-modern appearance. This novel grille design is underscored by a powerfully sculptured front apron, complete with large air intakes. LED headlights are fitted as standard, with the two light sources located one above the other, for the first time. The clean-cut nature of the Z4’s surface doesn’t stop at the hood. The joints at the bonnet’s sides merge seamlessly into the upper character line of the flanks, running all the way to the car’s back end. A second character line glides from the large air breathers, effortlessly connecting with the rear wheel arches. Seventeeninch, light-alloy wheels are fitted as standard, along with the black soft-top roof. Able to open or close in 10 seconds, the fully electric soft-top can be operated at speeds of up to 50km/h. At the tail end, the boot’s lid sports a harmoniously integrated spoiler as well as horizontally arranged, L-shaped light assemblies. The robust looking rear apron is complemented by the side surrounds, whilst the trapezoidal exhaust tailpipes sit proudly at the edges of the prominent diffuser. Interior: The exclusive nature of the Z4 sDrive30i is further enhanced by the interior. We were greeted by a first-class cabin complete with a driver-focused cockpit design. Supportive and uber-comfy sports seats are fitted as standard and feature integral head restraints. From this commanding position, the driver orientated setup becomes even more obvious. The structured arrangement of the controls, along with the shift paddles on the adjustable sport steering wheel, have all been designed for an optimal driving experience. With the soft-top up, there is still plenty of room on offer for both driver and passenger. The roominess of the 2022 Z4 is complemented by the use of premium materials throughout the vehicle. One of our favourite features of the interior design was the way in which the door panel contours echo some of the exterior graphic elements. This accentuates the harmony of the external and internal designs. The boot capacity has been increased by 50%, now offering a 36

convenient 281 litres of storage space. This makes the latest generation Z4 far more practical for everyday use. Infotainment & Technology: The new Z4 includes the BMW Live Cockpit Professional; a superb package offering a fresh display and operating system which provides the ultimate in connectivity and is powered by the new BMW operating system 7.0. This system is controlled through a high-resolution instrument cluster behind the steering wheel, along with the Control Display, located in the centre console. Both screens measure an impressive 10.25 inches (diagonal) and offer crystal clear graphics. The voicecontrol system has also been upgraded and contributes greatly to the user-friendly and convenient nature of the new Z4. This setup also includes an adaptive navigation system and a hard-based multimedia system. Thanks to Remote Software Upgrades, your Z4 will always feature the latest software. We found this setup in its entirety to be very intuitive, easy to navigate and exceptionally helpful when attempting to access all manner of features and information. Performance: The highlight of our day was engaging the ignition, as the roar of the 2.0-litre, four-cylinder, TwinPower, turbocharged petrol engine was exactly what we had wanted to hear. The powerful engine of the Z4 sDrive30i delivers a maximum output of 258hp and produces a peak torque of 400Nm. This combined with the standard eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission with optimised efficiency, allows the sDrive30i to surge from 0-100km/h in 5.4 seconds, and to reach an electronically capped top speed of 250km/h.

With excellent cornering capabilities, finely tuned suspension, and a very effective braking system, the responsive Z4 is a pleasure to drive. An added bonus is the fuel-efficient nature of the car, consuming only 6.0 - 6.1 litres per 100km. CO2 emissions are also low at 139 - 137 grams per kilometre. Safety: It's no surprise that BMW have included a wide range of both safety and cutting-edge driver assistance features in the new Z4. Included as standard are front, side and head airbags for both occupants, three-point inertia-reel seatbelts, crash sensors, a rollover protection system, a tyre pressure indicator and Electric Power Steering (EPS) amongst many others. Optional extras include Active Cruise Control, Lane Change & Lane Departure Warning systems, Parking and Reverse Assistant, BMW Head-Up Display and much more. ✤

CELESTIALLY ELECTRIC Cadillac has unveiled the CELESTIQ show car, a model that previews the brand’s future handcrafted, all-electric flagship sedan.

Conceived to lead Cadillac’s electric future and inspired by the brand’s 120-year heritage, CELESTIQ serves as a touchstone for the Cadillac design and engineering teams, who continue to develop the model as it moves closer to production. “The CELESTIQ show car is the purest expression of Cadillac,” said Magalie Debellis, manager, Cadillac Advanced Design. “It brings to life the most integrated expressions of design and innovation in the brand’s history, coalescing in a defining statement of a true Cadillac flagship.” In developing the show car, the design and engineering teams immersed themselves in the artisanship and customisation that defined early Cadillac sedans such as the bespoke V-16 powered coaches of the pre-war era, and the hand-built 1957 Eldorado Brougham. The CELESTIQ is the culmination of that heritage, brought to life with innovative production methods and new technologies. Designers drew further inspiration from classic architecture such as the mid-century masterpieces of architect Eero Saarinen, along with other iconic American designs, which made era-defining statements when introduced and endured with distinctive timelessness. Realising and infusing those influences within an Ultium-based EV architecture resulted in a clean-sheet expression for the CELESTIQ show car that considers the entirety of travel as a 40

curated experience — one intended to evoke an emotional response. The show car previews some of the materials, innovative technologies and hand-crafted attention to detail harnessed to express Cadillac’s vision for the future. Highlights include five high-definition, advanced LED interactive displays, including a 55-inch-diagonal advanced LED display, along with many industry firsts such as a variable-transmission Smart Glass Roof and Ultra Cruise1, General Motors’ next evolution of available hands-free driver assistance technology. The Smart Glass Roof features Suspended Particle Device (SPD) technology that allows for four zones of variable lighting, allowing passengers to fine-tune their cabin experience for completely personalised comfort and visibility. Additionally, the 55-inchdiagonal advanced LED display introduces a passenger display with electronic digital blinds, an active privacy technology, which is designed to allow passengers to enjoy video content while blocking it from the view of the driver. While they’re previewed on the show car, these technologies and more will make the CELESTIQ the most advanced vehicle ever from Cadillac. Availability for the production version of CELESTIQ will be announced at a later date. ✤ GO: VISIT WWW.CADILLAC.COM FOR FURTHER INFORMATION.

In Conversation with… Mehdi Hanayen The Cluster General Manager, Sofitel Bahrain Zallaq Thalassa Sea & Spa, talks challenges and triumphs.

Hospitality is known to be a career of long and unpredictable hours and frequent moves. What initially drew you to this sector? The passion for hospitality came from an early age from my home country, Tunisia, where the tourism industry is one of the most important sectors of the economy. This is what influenced my decision to pursue an international career. In 2003, I started my Bachelor's degree in Hospitality, Finance and Revenue Management, from the Glion Institute of Higher Education, in Bulle, Switzerland, and, after that, I completed my education with the Master's degree in Hospitality Management from Cornell University. What are the greatest challenges you have faced at Sofitel Bahrain? How have you overcome these? The pandemic confronted the hospitality business with several new challenges and we quickly had to implement drastic responses to reduce the impact of the virus and mitigate the corresponding loss in business. We understood that business would mainly come from within the country. Staycation offers gained popularity due to the restrictions and risks involved in long-distance travel. At Sofitel Bahrain Zallaq Thalassa Sea & Spa, we invested all our efforts in attracting this segment during the lockdown. In a highly competitive hospitality environment, hotels need to find ways to differentiate themselves in order to attract different 50

segments. Creating a strong hotel branding is about defining your target audience and adapting your offerings to them. We wanted to position the resort as an idyllic family destination. With the support of our owning company, we managed to adapt the resort and fully prepared it with a range of outstanding children’s facilities such as a Kids’ Club, a Teens’ Club, outdoor Kids’ Pool and an array of services and activities to help parents relax and unwind. Nowadays, we can proudly say that Sofitel Bahrain is the best family hotel in the country. The food and beverage offerings at a hotel can be a great tool to attract locals looking for a completely unique dining experience. However, attracting the local community to our restaurants and bars was not an easy task for us being located far from the city. Having this in mind, at Sofitel Bahrain we created an outstanding variety of outdoor and indoor restaurants and bars to satisfy the most exquisite palates of the Kingdom. Thirteen exciting dining options and nightlife are on the menu, from award-winning seafood, Italian, Southeast Asian and Lebanese restaurants to the luxury of seasonal menus and al fresco and all-day dining. Any new business has its challenges, but spas and salons bring a whole new level of complexity. Our main challenge was our location and, in order to overcome this, we thought of offering our guests and the local community a space that would stand out and have that added value that would make it unique. For

this reason, and with the full support of our owning company, we created Thalassa Sea & Spa, the first Thalassa centre in the GCC, offering a vast array of seawater-based treatments, including hydrotherapy, massage, wellness and rehabilitation. Since the opening in 2011, our main focus has been to offer a well-trained staff capable of anticipating customer needs, offering effective treatments in a wonderful ambiance in order to earn the loyalty of all our clients, enabling us to have an extensive database of repeat guests nowadays. Similarly, what do you consider your greatest achievements in your role at Sofitel Bahrain? Since I joined Sofitel Bahrain back in 2018, I have been fortunate enough to have accomplished numerous goals. I have had the pleasure of watching the company grow exponentially and being awarded several times. Some of our achievements include our popular Friday Brunch, an extravagant event considered the best brunch of the Kingdom for the last years. We managed to enhance our culinary offering to attract guests from all nationalities. However, I would highlight the opening of Rivaaj, the best Indian restaurant for those who want to experience an unforgettable gastronomic journey tasting authentic flavours of India. Lastly, being able to position Sofitel Bahrain as a leading family destination mastering the art of family holidaying has become one of our most successful achievements. Our hotel has been the most idyllic escape for families in search of a relaxing holiday with their loved ones for the past years.

How do you see the future of the hospitality industry in Bahrain, both short-term post-pandemic and in the longer term? From my point of view, I feel deeply confident and see a bright future for the tourism sector in Bahrain. The hospitality industry here is set to grow exponentially with all the new hotels joining the market as well as the opening of spaces such as the new Bahrain International Exhibition and Convention Centre, the largest venue of its kind in the Middle East. Marking a new era for the Kingdom’s aviation sector, the addition of the new airport will be a significant support to the growth not only of the economy of the country but also of the tourism industry. Thanks to Bahrain's development plan, including these projects as well as new luxury hotels and public and private beaches, our country will reinforce its position as one of the best beach destinations in the Middle East. From our side, thanks to the continuous support of our owning company and aiming to expand our offering, we are currently working on the addition of four new villas next year, a milestone that will elevate our room inventory inviting guests to spend quality time with friends and family in a private setting here in the magical south of the Kingdom. How do you like to enjoy Bahrain when you are not working? I strongly believe that spending our free time properly can actually help us in our success in the professional world and, in my case, I enjoy spending it with my family. ✤ fact magazine

THE SCIENCE OF FOOD Sumeet Kurmi, Executive Chef at Al Areen Palace and Spa by Accor, talks experimentation, inspiration and falling in love.

VOICE FROM THE KITCHEN •

It has previously been mentioned that food science is what inspired you to be a chef. How did you become aware of this? Were you inspired from an early age? I was in high school watching an episode of Kitchen Chemistry by Heston Blumenthal, where he was doing blindfolded experiments. This concentrated on the powers of each sensory [experience]. Each of our senses plays such an important role in our perception of our favourite foods and builds memories. Recipes are important to follow, however at times they need to be adjusted. For example: what happens when you have very high humidity in a kitchen? Or the beef short rib you received is not becoming tender, even after overnight braising? Or the potatoes are not starchy enough while making gnocchi? This is when Food Science comes in. Who have been your mentors along the way and what is the most important lesson you have learned? Throughout my culinary Journey, of 17 years, I have worked with some of the toughest and most humble chefs and general managers. Chef Jeremy Touzelet, in Grand Cayman, inspired me to be patient and calm through any tense situations in the kitchen; Chef Michael Scott, in Bermuda, made me repeat some recipes more than 15 times! And my most influential mentor, Marie B Chapoton, [Al Areen GM] whose inclusive leadership and passion

for perfection are my biggest motivators. I am as good as my team. What three ingredients do you always have in your kitchens and why? Roasted garlic – which is widely used in dressings, sauces, marinations, dips etc. Seasoning salt – a blend of eight types of salts and spices; a wonder spice that can be used for any veg, meat, poultry or seafood. Fresh limes – king of acidity and freshness which brings out flavours and improves the palate. What is your signature dish? How was it developed and what makes it popular? Eight-hour Sous Vide Octopus. It’s cooked with a modern French technique, charred and crispy from the outside, drizzled with Canena extra virgin olive oil and served with caper crushed baby potatoes and locally sourced red pepper persillade. It's one of the trickiest types of seafood to cook; after multiple trials with various techniques, we achieved the texture we wanted through sous vide. When a guest tries octopus for the first time in their life with hesitation and finally falls in love with this dish – my goal is accomplished! ✤ fact magazine

CULINARY SPOTLIGHT •

J

ashan is the Hindi or Urdu word for celebration. Located in Wyndham Garden Manama, which is adjacent to Oasis Mall in Juffair, this restaurant hosts a celebration of flavours and I head there with my companions on a Thursday afternoon. On entering the lobby, we’re welcomed by the friendly staff and guided to the restaurant, which is on the seventh floor. Mandalas (geometric configurations of symbols popular in Asian cultures), paisley prints and floral motifs adorn the upholstery, carpet and table runners. The colour palette features earthy tones. Gold accents and woodwork are seen throughout; wood carved chairs, patterned wood columns and panels, wood flooring… A glass dome in the ceiling allows natural light into an otherwise moderately lit space. There is regular and booth-style seating and we settle down at one of the long family-style tables. While we wait for our food, we’re served roasted poppadoms, mint chutney and pickled shallots and lemons. Serenaded by instrumental Indian music, we whet our appetites with these piquant sides while watching our food being prepared through the glass enclosed show kitchen. Our feast commences with Jashan Non-Veg Platter and Jashan Veg Platter. Each comes with a selection of mouth-watering kebabs served with lime wedges and sliced raw onions. The former includes Murgh Malai Kebab: chicken marinaded with yoghurt, aromatics, spices and nut meal and cooked in a tandoor; Mulayam Seekh Kebab: skewer-style minced lamb blended with aromatics and spices; Tandoori Manpuri Jhinga: shrimp marinated with yoghurt and mustard and then cooked in a clay oven; and Mahi Nizami Tikka: fish tikka seasoned with a tasty herby marinade. Each of the elements is bursting with flavour. The chicken is succulent and has a richness to it from the nutty marinade. It’s my fact magazine

favourite, followed by the sweet, bouncy shrimp. The vegetarian counterpart features Lahori Paneer Tikka: tandoor roasted cottage cheese marinaded with yoghurt and spices; Bhutte Aur Methi Ki Seekh: skewer-style kebabs made with corn, fenugreek leaves, potatoes and spices; Dahi Ke Kebab: yoghurt kebabs; and Tandoori Sarson Ki Phool: roasted and spiced cauliflower florets. It’s my first time trying the yoghurt kebabs and I’m excited. They’re like croquettes, breaded and fried. The crunchy exterior complements the creamy, tart yoghurt filling. An extensive main course follows. We’re served an assorted bread basket: naan, kulcha and paratha, each having their own varieties. We ask for garlic naan, for instance, but you could do plain or buttered. They’re all cooked in a tandoor oven. The difference usually lies in whether they’re made from wheat flour or all-purpose flour, whether or not the dough is fermented, etc. Our server also recommends Murthal Ke Parathe, onion and potato stuffed bread served with homemade white butter (unprocessed butter) and pickle. We strongly recommend this rustic creation. Gravies include Hyderabadi Nihari, lamb shank simmered on low heat and cooked overnight with ginger and turmeric. The gravy has an earthy taste and is buttery, the marrow juices having seeped into it. The lamb, the star of the dish, is tender and falls off the bone, and the marrow easily slides out. Dum Ka Murgh is chicken doused in a slightly tangy sauce. Coconut and almonds lend this dish its rich texture. The chicken is tender and juicy. The meat gravies are accompanied by Dal Jashan, slow cooked black lentil enriched with butter and cream. We recommend it regardless of your protein preference. The lentils have a slight bite, a contrast to the velvety gravy. 56

We’re really full by this time but make space for Murgh Dum Nawabi Biryani. Cooked dum style, sealing the flavours within the pot. Aromatic long grain Basmati rice infused with a chef’s special Lakhnavi ground spice mix and fortified with flavour from the chicken. Jashan showcases Lakhnavi, from the city of Lucknow, Awadhi, from the modern-day state of Uttar Pradesh, and Hyderabadi cuisine. It also specialises in regional desserts and chaat (street food), so, no matter your preference, you will find something to suit. We wash down our feast with a selection of mocktails: Lemon With Mint, Orange Delight and Berry Cooler. Fruity and fresh, they offer respite from the rich fare. We also try New Age Jal Jeera, the twist being pineapple juice. Traditionally, it’s made with only lime juice and a mix of spices including cumin and black salt. Our desserts include Rabdi Jam, which is the infamous gulab jamun steeped in saffron infused reduced milk. It’s a tantalising combination – warm, spongy dumplings doused in thick, cold milk. We also eat Kulfi Falooda, a saffron and pistachio kulfi ice cream served with glass noodles and an infused syrup. Fully replete, I conclude that Jashan is a great place to celebrate and dine with family and friends and it also has live entertainment performances every Thursday and Friday from 7pm onwards. ✤

FROM ITALY, WITH LOVE Tanushree Mathur discovered the new menu at Mondo Taste of Italy, at The Diplomat Radisson Blu Hotel Residence & Spa, offers an elaborate old country-style feast.

DINING DELIGHT •

E

xuding the kind of atmospheric comfort that is reminiscent of Italy, Mondo’s welcoming interiors are accentuated with soothing colours, wooden flooring and brick walls. Expressing a modern yet cosy and family-driven atmosphere, we were seated right in front of the star of the place – a Neapolitan brick oven that travelled all the way from Italy. Based on a sharing concept typically served in Italy’s Osterias, the menu recommends ordering several of their medium-sized dishes to make the most of the dining experience and we quickly learned that the ingredients used in the kitchen, from the organic olive oil to the original imported tomato sauce and flour, are all sourced from a small Italian farm. Our server, Himanshu, soon brought our drinks to the table – a zesty, refreshing, elderflower apple spritz and an authentic Italian drink topped with an orange peel. Thirst considerably quenched, our much-awaited Italian feast began with a selection of appetisers. Out came the favourite starter from my last visit, the Frittura del Golfa. A traditional street food dish comprising fried squid and prawns paired with a well-balanced tartar sauce. Every bite felt like the taste of the ocean, and we couldn’t hold ourselves from indulging.

• DINING DELIGHT The Octopus Salad was composed of thin tender fresh octopus slices, crispy capers, green leaves, cherry tomatoes, olives, orange slices, EVOO (when olives are crushed into a pulp without any chemicals) and lemon dressing. The Carpaccio of Angus Beef melted beautifully in my mouth and is made from extremely lean Angus beef that is magically enlivened with a blend of peppery rocket leaves, capers, generous shavings of Parmigiano and a touch of precious truffle oil, which adds to its distinct flavour. As we made our way through the starters, I found myself being drawn by the smell of freshly baked dough and within minutes out came the first main – the Carpricciosa pizza! An Italian classic made with tomato sauce, mozzarella, olives, beef ham, bell peppers, mushrooms and artichokes. The dough is exactly what you expect. It has that charred flavour from the oven, perfect puffed-up crust and precise texture without being too chewy. The Tagliata Prime Rib-Eye with blistered tomatoes and chimichurri sauce did justice to this fine cut, starring the meat’s tenderness. This was quickly followed by a dish that got an ovation from the entire table and is a ‘must-try’ when dining at Mondo – the Lobster spaghetti. The consistency of the pasta was mastered to perfection - not too al dente and far from being too soft. Every strand was covered with the perfect amount of tomato sauce so as to not overpower the sweet delicate flesh of the lobster. The dish was subtly uplifted by the fresh cherry tomatoes, spinach and lemon. Of course, we could not miss the Risotto ai Porcini which was just the comfort food we needed. Packed with nuttiness from the Arborio rice and rich earthy flavour from the Porcini mushrooms, coated in the super creamy texture of Parmesan cheese and butter, the risotto truly was a gift to our palates. To end this gastronomic journey, we delved into the dessert selection. I must be honest; I am not a big fan of chocolate, but as soon as the Molten Chocolate Cake made its way to the table, the very aroma had me in a trance. I eagerly waited with childlike excitement, wanting to be the first one to cut through the soft cake and reveal the gooey, warm, dark chocolate centre. My oh my, I was pleasantly surprised. The decadent chocolate, topped with a crunchy wafer-thin biscuit and dollop of vanilla ice cream, took me straight to chocolate heaven! I selfishly cleaned up the entire plate without sharing a single morsel! And, last but not least came a creamy Semifreddo al Limone, a semi-frozen lemon cake, with almond and pistachio crust, refreshing summer berries and berry coulis. It was the perfect combination of sweet and sharp, just the zesty dessert we needed to end the meal. Authentic Italian cuisine is something many try and fail to replicate. However, Mondo manages to seamlessly deliver an exceptional experience in every single way. From the relaxing atmosphere to the attentive staff, the quality ingredients and outstanding food, this chic restaurant is one I will continue to rave about! ✤

A LEGACY OF FLAVOURS Dining at Persian restaurant Homa, Melissa Nazareth discovered the truth of the owner's saying 'we are ourselves, unique and simple' with dishes created from outstanding family recipes.

T

he first thing you notice at Homa is the wall art; life-sized, in rich colours, depicting vibrant Persian culture: its women, stoic and glorious amid the chaos; regal, feminine warriors. Qajar dynasty royalty, the phoenix, ‘homa’ in Farsi. A golden sculpture of this ‘bird of blessing’ adorns the wall by the staircase. “It’s said to bring good fortune when it flies above you,” says Hanieh Mirbaha, Co-owner and Head Chef. She, along with her husband Ebrahim Ali, started this concept two years ago. Hanieh credits her husband as the ‘courage’ behind their start-up. A hands-on entrepreneur, he has thrown himself into the dayto-day operations of the business since the start. “All the dishes are what I cook at home,” says Hanieh, adding that they’re family favourites, handed down by her grandmother and parents. “The kebabs are my father’s creations,” she adds. The restaurant is even named after her mother. We decide to sit at the long, family-style table on the ground floor; the loft has two main dining areas adjoining an outdoor space. “What would you like to have?” asks Hanieh, displaying generous Persian hospitality. We entrust ourselves into the hands of our charming hostess who recommends an eclectic selection of dishes. As we wait for our food to arrive, our friendly servers ensure we’re comfortable. “Our staff has been with us since we began,” says Hanieh, who is full of praise for her dynamic frontof-house team. Soon, the salad and appetisers appear; Shirazi Special, like everything else in the restaurant, has a backstory – a testament to the culinary legacy of this restaurant and the creativity of our hostess. For our hot appetisers, we have Mirza Ghasemi, smoked eggplant with a tomato and garlic base topped with a fried egg, fact magazine

and Khashk E Badamjan, which is fried eggplant dip garnished with fried onion bits. Both are creamy and silken, eaten with oven baked bread. The rustic flavours of the eggplant and salty yoghurt pair well. Our cold appetiser is a cucumber and yoghurt dish, Mast O Khiar, the perfect accompaniment to our meatheavy main course. We’re joined by Hanieh and it’s almost as if we’re dining at her home. We discuss food and culture with yesteryear Persian music serenading us in the background – a playlist that Hanieh has curated herself; everything at Homa has a personal touch. She offers to serve us and tells us what sauce goes with which protein and that we must eat our meat with butter to fully enjoy the flavours…our hearts are already full. Our main course begins with Khoresh E Gheimeh, meat and split pea balls doused in tomato gravy garnished with fried potato straws. The gravy, imbued with the intense flavours of the meat, is well complemented by the light, saffron-infused long grain rice. Khoresh E Ghormeh Sabzi, a meat stew with a mixture of herbs has an earthy flavour from the greens. We learn that all ingredients are sourced daily and cooked to order; for instance, the meat and herbs are cooked to perfection despite having different cooking times and everything arrives at the table superfresh and piping hot. Throughout our dining experience, we taste simple, extraordinary flavours and this is something that’s highlighted by Hanieh. “We listen to our customers and we can adapt, for example if something needs more heat, but really, our recipes are truly our 64

own. Others may imitate, but what’s important is being yourself, keeping it simple and staying unique.” This is the secret to the restaurant’s success. We try Tachin, rice with a crispy crust cooked with meat and chicken. It is excellent and so tasty. The show stopper, so to speak, of our main course is the Homa platter. It can easily feed six to eight guests and consists of five different proteins each served with a side of rice. I start off with the kebabs – lamb, steak and chicken served with butter and grilled tomatoes. Steamy and succulent, right off the skewers, they melt in my mouth. The meat is top-notch, complementing the light saffron and barberry rice. Next on the platter is the sea bass with a side of herb infused rice and a sweet, nutty fenugreek sauce; the bass is perfectly cooked with a crispy skin. After this, I try the lamb shank served with dill infused rice and an onion gravy. The meat falls off the bone and the flavours are basic but on point. Likewise, the chicken. We finish our lunch with the traditional doogh, a cooling yoghurt drink – the much-needed ending to our generous feast. Dining at Homa is truly an educational journey, discovering authentic Persian flavours in an atmosphere of easygoing elegance where guests are welcomed as family. We would highly recommend you try it for yourself. ✤

U

nless you’ve been living under a rock, you must have spotted Hilton Garden Inn Bahrain Bay (HGI). Located on the same plot as The Avenues mall, it just celebrated its first anniversary and is one of the most successful hotels in the Kingdom in terms of occupancy. On a Sunday morning, I learned that a staycation at HGI Bahrain Bay was in order – a weekend after a weekend? Lucky me! You take the same route as you would to go to the mall. Once you enter the premises, keep going straight down. There are signs to guide you, so it’s easy. When you reach the end, there’s an uphill ramp leading to the hotel’s entrance. We decided to opt for the valet parking service, which is complimentary. The lobby is long and well-lit with sunshine streaming in through a series of French windows. As we waited to be checked in, I explored a little discovering a minimalist, classy interior punctuated with wood detail, abstract paintings and knit wall hangings with plenty of space dedicated to sofa-style seating. A shop, located in the lobby, displayed essential items from edibles to washing detergent. Such facilities are a brand standard across all HGI properties worldwide and, in Bahrain, the store is presented as a tuk-tuk, which adds a touch of character to the space. Further down the lobby is Together & Co. Cafe, which serves hot and cold beverages such as coffee, tea and juices. 74

A glass display tempted with delicious looking cakes and pastries. There’s an outdoor seating area, ideal for the cooler months. You get an uninterrupted view of Manama’s skyline and Bahrain Bay from here. A hassle-free check-in later, we headed to our room on the sixth floor. The hotel has 192 rooms, including 35 suites. Every room has either a sea or bay view; 70% of the rooms offer both and mine was in this category. Accentuated with earthy tones, ocean-inspired design notes and neutral colour palettes, the turquoise accents felt like an extension of the blue expanse that lay right behind the silky golden drapes. A bed dressed in crisp white linen sheets beckoned. On a small table, was a box of Bateel dates and date cookies – a nice little local welcome snack to tide us over until dinner. Our room had all the facilities such as a mini refrigerator, a 48-inch LED screen airing local and international movies and shows, and complimentary Wi-Fi. The bathroom had an enclosed shower area and was stocked with body care utilities and fresh white bath and face towels. All I wanted to do was put my feet up and enjoy a cup of coffee while enjoying the view. However, in the interests of research, I decided to explore further. The hotel is strategically located close to the commercial district and major shopping destinations. Some key cultural destinations and iconic tourism landmarks nearby include Bahrain National Theatre, Bahrain National Museum and Manama Souq. HGI Bahrain Bay is directly connected to The Avenues mall. You can enjoy easy access from the lobby. A lift takes fact magazine

you to the food court and cinema area. There are two meeting rooms and a 70-seater ballroom on the first floor and an integrated gym and an infinity pool on the second floor. First, we checked out the gym, which was moderately sized and had an attached bathroom. As we entered, we were greeted by the quote ‘Eat. Sleep. Gym. Repeat.’, which was framed and hung on the wall. It didn’t motivate me enough to work out. It did, however, nudge my husband to throw some punches at the punching bag. There were exercise machines such as treadmills, steppers and cycles and weight training tools such as dumbbells and kettlebells, as well as exercise balls. A mini refrigerator was stocked with water bottles to keep guests hydrated throughout their workout. A cabinet was arranged with neatly piled face towels. There was a TV, which I presume is installed for the likes of me who are not hardcore gym heads but don’t mind a walk or jog on the treadmill. There’s also a laundry room right next to the gym. This is a brand standard across all HGI properties worldwide. While laundry service is available for an additional charge, you can do your own washing too. After a quick exploration of the fitness centre, we went to the poolside located outdoors on the same level. You can enjoy breath-taking views of Bahrain Bay from here too. The humidity was dampening, quite literally. However, we saw many guests splashing around so, clearly, once you get into the pool, it gets better. A Jacuzzi adjoined the infinity pool which is surrounded by recliners for those who want 76

to unwind with a beverage or hubble-bubble. After our exploration and an early mall supper, I finally got to put my feet up with that much-anticipated coffee before sinking into the uber-comfy bed for a perfect night’s sleep. The next morning, we headed to Together & Co. for breakfast. A casual bistro located on the first floor, it serves a good selection of food and beverages for all occasions, appetites and budgets. Both local and international specialities are available. I learned from the friendly staff at the bistro that lunch and dinner are à la carte and breakfast is buffet style. We settled at a table by the window – breakfast with a view! Our generous server offered orange juice, which we readily accepted. There were other options such as coffee and tea as well. A selection of Bahraini staples and international favourites awaited us. Balaleet or sweet vermicelli topped with an omelette, shakshuka or tomato eggs, foul medames or fava beans, bacon and eggs, hash browns, a variety of cheese and cold cuts, yoghurt parfait and fresh fruit, a range of breads and pastries… we tried most of it. While my husband enjoyed the creamy scrambled eggs, I had an omelette from the omelette station. There was a pancake station too, which was presented as a kids’ corner but attracted plenty of adults enjoying the chance to select their own toppings. Long story short, breakfast was a hearty affair after which, we headed to our room where we binge watched YouTube for a bit before checking out. All in all, it was a day well spent and a lovely bonus break. We strongly recommend a weekend at this four-star hotel and don’t forget to register for Hilton Honors, an award-winning guest-loyalty programme, which entitles you to a 20% discount. ✤

SUMMER HOLIDAY – CZECH. Experience glorious historical architecture, a picturesque ancient spa city and scenic hiking trails in Czechia, a popular European destination.

TRAVEL •

T

he Czech Republic, or Czechia as it’s also known, is an ideal place to visit this time of the year. During the day, the temperature generally doesn’t exceed 25 degrees Celsius and nights are cooler. In this article, we will explore interesting things to see and do in two major cities, each offering starkly different experiences, as well as some popular hiking routes.

Prague The capital city, Prague, is said to have the one of the best public transportation systems in Europe so, getting around is easy. The architecture here is particularly noteworthy. You can spot a wide range of styles such as Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and more modern ones such as Art Nouveau and Neo-Classical. Prague Castle is a major attraction. It’s a complex comprising many structures exhibiting different styles such as the Gothic St. Vitus Cathedral and the Romanesque St. George’s Basilica. The latter is the oldest surviving church building within this complex, which also includes a monastery and several palaces, gardens and defence towers. Most of the areas are open to tourists. Further, it houses many museums including the National Gallery Prague. The permanent exhibition here is dedicated to Czech history. In addition to being a historical hub, Prague has much for arts enthusiast. The Lennon Wall, inspired by the late former Beatle, offers the perfect backdrop for a memorable photograph with John Lennon-inspired graffiti; lyrics of the band’s songs feature in addition to designs relating to local and global causes. Lovers of literature must visit the Franz Kafka Museum, which exhibits first edition books and original letters, diaries and drawings – an absolute treat for fans!

Make a pitstop for a lunch cruise on the Vltava river and enjoy amazing views of the Old Town Bridge Tower and Charles Bridge. Czech gastronomy features hearty stews and meaty mains. Svíćková, which gets its name from the popular local sauce made of root vegetables and heavy cream, is a steak dish. The meat is cooked with vegetables and spices and doused in the velvety sauce. It’s served with knedlíky, which are the traditional dumplings. They are boiled, which gives them their distinct spongy texture. Whipped cream and cranberry sauce are typically served as part of the dish. The Czech goulash, a robust beef stew typically served with bread or potato knedlíky, is another staple. If you’re looking for something lighter, we recommend the ubiquitous chlebíćek – open-faced sandwich. If you’re on the go, get a Czech-style hot dog or párek v rohlíku. The local sausages have a thicker casing, offering a good bite. Czech brews are also popular and you could book one of the brew tours. Plus there’s much to appease the sweet toothed; trdelník, a hollow cylinder of dough dusted with cinnamon, sugar and nuts, is popular with locals and tourists alike. Or enjoy the spirit of the holiday season in summer with the immaculately decorated perníćky or gingerbread cookies and vánoćní cukroví, which are a selection of Christmas cookies; they’re sold all year round. Prague’s Old Town has many interesting offerings. The Prague Orloj, a medieval astronomical clock attached to the Old Town Hall, features interesting components; it indicates the position of the sun and moon in the sky and has a calendar dial and figures of Catholic saints. The architectural extravaganza continues here and in New Town, which is home to the famed Dancing House. The original building, which was destroyed during the war has been restored in a way that part of it appears slanted. fact magazine

Karlovy Vary Spa treatments are a great way to relax, especially on a holiday. Head to Karlovy Vary or Carlsbad, one of Europe’s best spa towns. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it’s home to numerous natural hot springs teaming with minerals, which are said to have cured illnesses for centuries. There are five main colonnades, flaunting beautiful architectural styles where the springs’ waters seep: Mill Colonnade, Park Colonnade, Market Colonnade, Castle Colonnade and Hot Spring Colonnade – which houses the biggest and hottest spring. You can collect the water at a fountain-like structure in the colonnade and sip on it. A caveat: drinking large quantities could give you a stomach ache. We recommend you check into one of the many spa hotels in the area. They offer a range of wellness treatments in addition to a prescribed [spring water] drinking programmes tailored to suit your medical condition. Even if you don’t have a health issue, simply unwind at the pool or get a massage. Some spa hotels offer thermal baths with water from the springs. You could even take a bottle of the hot spring salts home as a souvenir. Don’t forget to try the spa wafers or lázećské oplatky. Back in the day, they were sprinkled with sugar and served to spa guests. Spring water and salt are said to give this melt-inyour-mouth traditional snack its unique flavour. You can buy them fresh from street vendors or packaged at shops. These days, different flavours including hazelnut, almond, chocolate and vanilla are available. was first sold in 1807 as ‘English Bitter’, a remedy for stomach illnesses. Having the flavours of ginger and cinnamon, it’s consumed as a digestive or appetiser. Cheese lovers must take home some abertam, a traditional Czech variety from Karlovy Vary. A picturesque town, Carlsbad is also sprinkled with parks and gardens that are beautifully landscaped. Relax under a gazebo or head to an observation tower on the hills to enjoy breath-taking views of the city.

Nature Trails If you’re the outdoorsy type or simply want to escape the hustle and bustle of the city, you’ll be pleased to know that the Czech Republic is home to numerous hiking trails. Bohemian Switzerland National Park has many well-marked routes. Most of them permit hiking and cycling – you can rent a bike or bring your own. Some areas are best accessed via boat, which is a paid service. Whether you’re a beginner or an expert, there’s a trail for every traveller. Located about two hours from Prague by road, the park contains the Elbe Sandstone Mountains, dense forests and deep gorges. If you are driving, parking areas are available for a fee. Or you could board a train from Prague. Bohemian Switzerland National Park is part of the larger Bohemian Switzerland, a picturesque landscape. While day tours are available, you need more time to fully experience this natural wonder. There are hotels in the surrounding area and campgrounds too. Some major landmarks to watch out for include Pravćická Brána or Pravćická Gate. Reaching a height of about 16 metres, it’s a rock formation in the shape of an archway. Tiské Stćny, meaning Tisa Walls, which also go by the name of Tisa Rocks, are sculpted sandstone pillars reaching a height of 30 metres. This attraction is popular with rock climbing enthusiasts and offers stunning views from the top. The gorges of the Kamenice River are another beauty to behold. The cliff walls tower at up to 150 metres. Another trekkers’ paradise, Lužnice Valley Hiking Trail’s 55-kilometre route is touted as one of Europe’s best. It leads through several nature reserves, forests, valleys, rocks, tunnels and historical and cultural sights. Mumlavský Vodopád or Mumlava Waterfall is a beautiful spot in Krkonoše National Park. It’s said to look different each time you see it, depending on the volume of water in the river. In winter, it’s frozen, in spring, the stream is strongest and in summer, water just trickles down. You can even enjoy a swim in the river at this time of the year. Due to the water’s force, the rocks at the foot of the waterfall are sculpted into deep bowl-like shapes where the water is collected; the deepest of these giant pots is three metres. Mumlava Waterfall is a destination in itself but also a starting point for hiking and biking trails. A UNESCO Biosphere Reserve site, Krkonoše National Park offers many. The park is nestled in the Krkonoše Mountains, which is the highest range in the country. Cable car riding is a popular summer activity, offering beautiful views of the rocky expanse. It’s mesmerising to witness the sunrise from atop the Snćžka – the tallest mountain in the range. You could hike your way to the summit or ride the cableway. Many plan their adventures before dawn so they can catch the first rays shooting across the horizon. ✤ fact magazine

BIG SCREEN Persuasion Need to Know:

The film is an adaptation of Jane Austen’s novel published in 1817 under the same name. The romance revolves around Anne Elliot, a 27-year-old Englishwoman who, unlike other women of her age, isn’t married yet. She was once in love but was ‘persuaded’ by family and friends to end the relationship because her love interest was not a rich man. However, she deeply loves him and regrets her decision.

Director: Carrie Cracknell Cast: Dakota Johnson, Cosmo Jarvis, Henry Golding, Richard E. Grant, Nikki Amuka-Bird

The film is a way to travel to the Amalfi Coast without leaving your sofa. The main attraction is undoubtedly the beautiful scenario where the story develops.

Under the Amalfi Sun Need to Know:

The film is an Italian romantic comedy and a sequel to Under the Riccione Sun. The story follows the young romance of Vicenzo and Camilla. However, just like its predecessor, the main character is the destination itself. The young couple put their love to the test on the picturesque Amalfi Coast in Italy while staying in Vincenzo's father’s incredible holiday house.

Director: Martina Pastori Cast: Lorenzo Zurzolo, Ludovica Martino, Davide Calgaro, Isabella Ferrari

Why Is It Worth Watching?

Despite being a centuries-old story, Persuasion is about love, a theme that never gets old. Anne Elliot (Dakota Johnson) was once madly in love with Frederick Wentworth (Cosmo Jarvis), but her family wouldn’t accept his humble origins and she decided to end the relationship. Eight years later, Captain Wentworth enters Anne’s life again, now in a much better position as a captain in the English Navy. However, though they are both still single, things between them are not clear and more complicated than expected. The story is lighthearted and full of unexpected twists. Fans of Austen’s work are not pleased with the adaptation, but they can’t deny that the movie is nicely produced with beautiful and well-researched costumes and the cast is spot on. Even the secondary characters’ performances make it worth a watch. If you enjoy romances with beautiful filmography and great actors, this is a good option for an easy watch with friends, family or, why not, in the company of your significant other.

Why Is It Worth Watching?

The film is a way to travel to the Amalfi Coast without leaving your sofa. The main attraction is undoubtedly the beautiful scenario where the story develops. With impressive takes of Amalfi town, it will make you add this destination to your mustvisit places list. The story itself tells how young and mature adults navigate their love life. Vicenzo (Lorenzo Zurzolo) is a visually impaired young man who is ready to fully commit to his girlfriend Camilla (Ludovica Martino). However, after living apart for a year while she was studying in Canada, she is not so sure of her future with him. Meanwhile, their group of friends and Vicenzo’s parents are having their own doubts regarding their love lives. The story is very bland, but the secondary characters steal the scene and give some interesting insights to the plot. Extra attention goes to Vicenzo’s best friend Furio (Davide Calgaro) and his lack of love experience. The story itself is not exciting, but the cinematography takes you to this little piece of paradise and shows a taste of the life in this touristic destination during the summer months. A must-watch if you are not travelling this summer and want to virtually experience a sunny holiday on the Amalfi Coast.

AUTOBIOGRAPHY

The Sound Of The Machine – My Life in Kraftwerk and Beyond

ALTERNATIVE/INDIE

POP ROCK

Entering Heaven Alive By Jack White

Emotional Creature By Beach Bunny

Released through Third Man Records, Entering Heaven Alive is American super star Jack White’s fifth studio album. It has an easy-going vibe, gentle and more acoustic. A contrast to Fear Of The Dawn that preceded it, which was primarily electric, more metallic. This one’s something you’d get if you were not to over-engineer. The album underscores White’s talent for roots-rock. I’ve Got You Surrounded (With My Love) has distinct jazz elements executed by pianist Quincy McCrary, which transform this centrepiece into a mini masterpiece. There are moments when the album exudes an early ‘70s energy. All Along The Way, which is one of a handful of numbers in which White is his own DIY one-man band, evokes a Paul McCartney feel as does the more surreal, guitar-less A Tree On Fire From Within in which White essentially plays lead bass through the whole tune. Olivia Jean, his newly wed wife and singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist joins him on the former. Love is a recurring theme throughout with tracks such as Queen Of The Bees or even Love Is Selfish, which deals with introspection. In If I Die Tomorrow, White muses on his early death. The album has a confessional rock feel with themes such as forgiveness as in Help Me Along. Or Please God, Don’t Tell Anyone, which is a plea to the deity for wrongs done in the past.

In October last year, Beach Bunny dropped the single Oxygen, followed by Fire Escape in March this year. It’s been a bit of a wait but Emotional Creature, the American rock band’s second album for Mom + Pop Music is worth it. Covering the full spectrum of emotions experienced in high school love stories, this sophomore album by Lili Trifilio and crew strikes a chord with most if not all. In the opener Entropy Trifilio wishes she didn’t have to hide a secret relationship. “Yeah, somebody's gonna figure us out And I hope they do 'cause I'm falling for you, whoa.” The album ends with the downtempo rock cut Love Song in which she is finally self-assured about her partner for what feels like the first time. While Karaoke captures the intoxicating beginnings of a new relationship, Weeds underscores a newfound emotional maturity in the way Trifilio realises how she deserves to be treated. All highlighting self-growth as both a person and songwriter. Whether one sees these puppy love anthems, so to speak, as borderline cringe or not, you can’t deny that everyone’s been there at some point. With lyrics that hit the nail on the head or, might we say, heart, and punchy, guitar-powered pop-rock music to complement, this album is one to watch out for.

By Karl Bartos If you are of a certain age, you may well have grown up with Kraftwerk – the German musical trio who introduced the world, or at least western Europe, to electronic music in the early ‘80s. Spawned by the incredibly fertile musical scene of late 1970s Dusseldorf, Kraftwerk gave us hits such as The Model, Tour De France and The Robots during an early career that has seen them dubbed one of the most important bands in modern music. Now Bartos lifts the lid of what it was like to be part of the scene unfolding at the famed Kling Klang studios during those heady days. Whether you’re a music lover, interested in the origins of today’s electronic sounds or just feeling a little nostalgic for the ‘good old days’, The Sound Of The Machine, officially due out in September, will be a captivating read.

The It Girl

By Ruth Ware A new book from the number one New York Times bestselling author of the “claustrophobic spinetingler” (People) One by One is cause for celebration. April Clarke-Cliveden was the first person Hannah Jones met at Oxford. Vivacious, bright, occasionally vicious, and the ultimate ‘It Girl’, she quickly pulled Hannah into her dazzling orbit. Together, they developed a group of devoted and inseparable friends—Will, Hugh, Ryan, and Emily—during their first term. By the end of the year, April was dead. Now, a decade later, Hannah and Will are expecting their first child, and Neville, the man convicted of killing April, has died in prison. Hannah’s world is rocked when a young journalist presents evidence that Neville may have been innocent. As Hannah delves deeper into the mystery of April’s death, she realises the friends she thought she knew all have something to hide…including a murder.

REACHING THE FINISH LINE Gods, mother-tongues, poetry, and the bravery of truthful expression.

A

la Ghawas, accomplished Bahraini singersongwriter, tells all about his latest album and his newfound sense of peace. The artist, who put out his first Arabiclanguage album late last year with the eminent Bahraini composer and musician Isa Najem after eight consecutive English-language releases, feels that he finally found a way to express himself with a complete sense of honesty and vulnerability. When asked about his refrain from the language with his previous eight albums, he says: “If you asked me this question 10 years ago, I don’t think I would have had an answer for you. But right now, me turning 40 and moving on with my life, I think that answer is very, very clear. I think what made me run away to the English language is because English gave me that free zone to express myself without me being necessarily questioned by people in my society. “I don't write about the simple romantic stuff. My songs are very daring, they can be very bold, they can sometimes be offensive, because they touch on several aspects of life including religious, social, even intimate matters. If you don't get personal, in any form of art, your art means 92

nothing. People want to know what you've gone through.” Despite feeling proud of his earlier work, Ala says he always felt there was a ‘mask’: “No matter how hard I tried to be sincere, it took me time to be brave enough to openly discuss such poetry in Arabic and be proud of it. “Bob Dylan once said that if you want to examine your honesty and your openness by writing a song, you need to feel as if you were naked walking in the streets. With this one, I felt that. It's scary expressing yourself in Arabic. I never managed to get to the finish line with my earlier albums. But with this one, I feel like I did.” The album, Brouvat Mout, translating to ‘Death Rehearsal’ (‘Brouvat’ being inherited from the Italian ‘Prova’ meaning ‘rehearsal’) was prompted by the passing of his grandmother as well as a close family friend, respected novelist and screenwriter Fareed Ramadan, in 2020. “It just made me reflect on the whole idea of losing someone for good. When you have your grandparents around, you feel you’re still young and so far away from death. But when they go, you look behind you and suddenly you only see your parents, no one else.” Singing in classical Arabic for the first seven tracks and

• ARTS & CULTURE in the colloquial Bahraini Arabic in the last, dubbed Mashmoom, Ala “flirts with the theme of death and its many faces”. One of the songs, named Alihat Al Muharraq or ‘The Gods of Muharraq’, was inspired by the only three visits Ala ever made to the Muharraq cemetery, the first being in 2011 to bury Ali Bahar, a prominent Bahraini singer known as the ‘Bob Marley of the Gulf’, and the second and third being in 2020, to bury both Salman Zayman, also a famous singer, and ‘Uncle Fareed’—“three very influential figures in the art community in Bahrain; all from Muharraq and buried in Muharraq. I wrote the song as a tribute to them, the legends of Muharraq, and those that are still around as well.” Another track, Khalf Quthban Al Jana translating to ‘Behind the Bars of Heaven’, is a satirical imagined future where Ala and his friends go to heaven and realise they prefer life. Additionally, Dam Al Ruman or ‘The Blood of Pomegranates’, is an invitation to his wife Fatema to ‘die with him,’ so as to say that life alone is not enough time to spend with her. The song that has hit the charts, however, is Mashmoom, named after the basil plant locals adorn graves with, and which in the past was used as a fragrant accessory at weddings, braided into the hair of the bride as well as showered on newlywed couples. Not being a big fan of modern technology and digitalised music and having produced the album as an ode to his Bahraini roots, Ala chose to release the album as a cassette, wanting to revive the old-fashioned way of listening to music—much like he did as a child in the eighties and nineties—hoping that listeners will appreciate its nostalgic quality. With his chin resting on weaved fingers, Ala recounts his earliest memory with music, playing the accordion at eight or nine years of age, encouraged by his music teacher, Mr. Maani Abdulaziz, who was the first to instil in him a love for the craft, and who Ala is still in touch with till this day. Being from a family that is quite artistic, with a poet for a mum and the renowned painter Abbas Al Mosawi for an uncle, his creative talent was continuously nurtured. Unbeknownst to most, Ala thinks of himself more as a poet sometimes, with a strong belief in the power of words and the cathartic gusto of literary flair. “If you don't have that good sense of poetry, your music becomes very thin. If you're a good guitar player, but you don't read, you can jam but you can never write a song. I don’t think I would ever have released a single record if I had no poetry coming out of me.” Speaking of the written word, Ala hopes to release a book next discussing his experience with identity and the questions he has grappled and struggled with. He expresses his gratitude towards his parents for giving him the freedom to flourish as he wanted, to his wife for always being by his side, and to his friends for their encouragement, especially Isa Najem, who he thinks of as “the most gifted musician I've ever met and who could steer the music scene in Bahrain for the coming decades.” ✤ 94

What We’re (Still) Talking About Not So Friendly Tech

Plastic Not Fantastic

Up The Ladies

So, Google has apparently fired the engineer who contended that its AI had become sentient. We must admit, when that little gem of a claim first became public, it was a bit of a shocker. It’s all very well having machines that will do everything for us, from chatting to the elderly to deflecting enemy rockets, but do we really want them developing into thinking, feeling beings? Wouldn’t we then have to give them far more consideration than we currently do? There are some who argue that a

Social media erupted in fury after a plastic surgeon shared a Tik Tok video of procedures she would recommend for actress Natalia Dyer. Not surprisingly, fans told ‘expert’ Maranda Wilson that she must be crazy since the Stranger Things star is ‘drop-dead gorgeous’. One user even commented: “I could never be a celebrity because if someone made a video like this about me, I would get violent!” Having looked at the potential before and after, we have to agree that the suggested modifications would look

With all the excitement about the FIFA World Cup 2022, we’re sure it hasn’t escaped your notice that there was a rather significant footballing competition taking place in Europe during July – the women’s Euros. Hosted in England, stadia witnessed record turnouts for the later stage matches and, as we went to press, the English Lionesses were set to face either Germany or France in the finals at Wembley. Many have said how great it is to see the women’s teams getting the

machine will only ever be as good – read effective and efficient – as its programming. And those of us who are wary of the ever-greater advancement of AI can take some solace from this. However, when you look at stories of driverless cars crashing into people, the Tay chatbot, which quickly transformed into a deeply unpleasant persona, and the latest tale from Moscow in which a chess-playing robot grabbed and broke the finger of its seven-year-old opponent, you have to wonder if the rise of the machines is already here.

weird. But there’s a bigger question here. Where does a, supposed, professional get off in going after a complete stranger like this? It’s not as if the actress had asked for advice but Wilson just decided to air her views on how the actress’s face could be improved. Is this something that’s professionally acceptable in the Tik Tok age? All we can say is the plastic surgery business mustn’t be going very well if a practitioner has to come up with a gimmick like this for publicity – and we honestly hope Natalia Dyer never takes any of this person’s suggestions.

recognition they deserve and even David Beckham went on record wishing the Lionesses luck and saying how they have inspired his daughter, Harper. However, let’s not forget that though the teams playing their hearts out during the Euros are becoming little girls’ heroes, there are other women’s teams, particularly on the African continent, which has just hosted the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, where players are working two or three jobs to make a living while representing their countries.
