HEADBANGERS’ DELIGHT
Metal Fest Bahrain is back with another high-octane night packed with sonic brutality!
Get ready to unleash your inner metalhead as Metal Fest Bahrain returns, promising a night of relentless headbanging and exhilarating performances from some of the best international and local acts.
A unique opportunity to witness a world-class metal concert, the show takes place on August 9 at Diggers Pub in the Delmon Hotel. Making their long-awaited Middle East debut will be San Francisco Bay Area Thrash legends ‘Heathen’ and Belgian Extreme Metal frontrunners ‘Schizophrenia’. Renowned for their precision riffing and harmony sections, coupled with melodic singing, Heathen is often credited alongside Exodus, Testament Death Angel and Violence as one of the pioneers of the Bay Area Thrash Metal scene of the mid to late 1980s. To date, the band has released four studio albums
– Breaking the Silence (1987), Victims of Deception (1991), The Evolution of Chaos (2009) and their last project Empire of the Blind (2020) – which critics have hailed as a testament to their enduring influence and raw thrash energy.
Joining them on this explosive bill are Belgian Extreme Metal trailblazers, Schizophrenia. Emerging from the depths of the underground, Schizophrenia’s savage blend of death and thrash metal has earned them acclaim for their relentless intensity and uncompromising sound. The band’s sound is a heady mix and unique interpretation of Morbid Angel, Demolition Hammer, Slayer,
early Sepultura, Dissection, Death, At The Gates, and others. Fresh off their 2022 album Recollections of the Insane that followed their five-song debut EP Voices in 2020, Schizophrenia will deliver a set that’s sure to sear itself into the memory of every attendee.
But the revelry doesn’t stop there, as local heroes Motor Militia, Bahrain’s veteran thrash metal warriors since 2001, will ignite the stage with their own brand of high-octane aggression. Opening the night with a furious onslaught of riffs and pounding drums, Motor Militia will set the perfect tone for the chaos to follow.
Closing out the festivities will be Rock United, Diggers Pub’s house band, ensuring the night ends on an unforgettable high. Their repertoire of metal classics will resonate with every headbanger in attendance.
The tickets for the event are priced at BD5 for regular advance and BD15 for VIP advance, which includes meet and greet with Heathen and Schizophrenia, where guests can also take pictures with the bands and get a free signed event poster. On the day of the event, tickets will be priced at BD7.5 at the door.
Doors open at 8pm and the metal mayhem kicks off promptly at 8.30pm. Guests need to be over the age of 21 to attend. ✤

HANDMADE
Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities (BACA) has joined hands with publisher Assouline on a project showcasing Bahraini culture to the world.
Assouline, a publishing house based in New York, has collaborated with BACA and launched a thoughtful and informative book spotlighting the fascinating story of traditional Bahraini crafts.
Released in English and titled Bahrain Crafts, the book offers interesting insight on the importance of preserving cultural heritage and also highlights the efforts towards reviving traditional crafts in the Kingdom.
The book is the result of a collaboration between Shaikha Mariam bint Hisham Al Khalifa, a cultural researcher specialising in traditional fashion and textiles with 10 years of experience in studying and collecting objects, and French photographer Harald Gottschalk, who has extensive experience in the field of photography with participations in more than 60 solo and collective exhibitions throughout his career.
The publication recounts the story of traditional Bahraini crafts through four main chapters comprising: crafts related to the sea, those practised on land, ornamental crafts and crafts for ceremonies and celebrations.
It also contains an engaging collection of historical photos, along with newly taken pictures, creating a distinctive blend and capturing the story of the crafts between past and present.
The creation of this collaborative environment favourably brings together craft, art and design, and further contributes towards more opportunities for creativity and development.
Regarding the importance of the book, His Excellency Shaikh Khalifa bin Ahmed bin Abdullah Al Khalifa, BACA President, emphasised that the publication of Bahrain Crafts underscores the growing interest in preserving our cultural heritage and traditional crafts, which are an essential part of the Kingdom’s national identity and intangible cultural heritage.
He said: “There is a certain beauty that can be found in all handmade objects, as they serve as a testament to a people’s culture and history as experienced today.”
His Excellency also stated that through the authority’s cooperation in publishing the book, they aim to highlight the inherent beauty in each craft and convey the stories of the artisans who have contributed to preserving these traditions. He pointed out that the collaboration with Assouline enhances these efforts to bring the message of Bahraini culture to the world.
The book is available at the gift shops of the Bahrain National Museum and the Qal’at Al Bahrain Site Museum, as well as at the Made in Bahrain shops at Al Jasra Crafts Centre and Bab Al Bahrain. It is also available at the official Assouline website and in its stores worldwide. ✤
POOCH PERFECT!
Calling all pet lovers and their fashionable furry companions to strut their stuff on the runway.
Get ready to be dazzled and charmed like never before as the inimitable dog fashion show, Pawject Runway, returns for its second season. Watch your favourite furry friends strut down the catwalk and showcase their best tricks for a chance to win the grand prize!
The event takes place on August 10 at the Hilton Bahrain from 5pm.
Although this eagerly awaited event is based around fun and fashion, more importantly, it serves as a noble endeavour that’s aimed towards supporting Bahrain Animal Rescue Centre (BARC). Every participant and attendee will be contributing directly to the welfare of animals in need, as all proceeds from the event will go to BARC and benefit its tireless efforts.
The eligibility requirements to participate are as follows: entries will be based on a first-come-first-served basis; pets six months and below cannot register; only dogs with updated vaccinations will be allowed to join and participating owners are required to bring vaccination cards as proof of current shots given by a licensed
veterinarian; exhibitors are required to provide their own collar, leash, costumes, water dish, pet carriers, props and any other equipment they may need to best showcase their pet. Also, all the equipment must be neatly stored in the holding area that will be provided to exhibitors.
The judging will be carried out by a panel of judges whose decisions are final and binding. The finalists will be selected on the following criteria: 25% for the creativity of the costume; 25% for the pet’s fun personality; 40% for the overall memorable impression of the dog (and guardian if they both dress alike); and 10% for the audience impact.
The tickets for this exciting evening are priced at BD5 net, making it accessible for everyone to join in the festivities and support a worthy cause. ✤
BAHRAIN CALLS FOR VISIONARY DESIGNS
The Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities (BACA) is calling for participation in designing its national pavilion at the Venice Biennale, with a focus on climate change and urban sustainability.
Holding an open call for visionary designs, BACA is inviting architects, designers and creatives to submit proposals for the Kingdom's national pavilion at the prestigious Venice Biennale. The 19th International Architecture Exhibition, running from May until November 2025, is a globally recognised platform that showcases innovative architectural responses to today’s pressing challenges.
The Bahrain Pavilion, themed Heat Wave, will explore the effects of climate change on urban environments, focusing on sustainable architectural solutions for adaptation. The authority is inviting architects, designers and creative professionals worldwide to submit concepts that blend urban development, sustainability and the preservation of local environments. This call aligns with the Biennale's overarching theme, ‘Intelligens. Natural. Artificial. Collective.’, which highlights the importance of integrating natural, artificial and collective intelligence to address climate change and propose innovative architectural solutions for related social, humanitarian and technological challenges of our time.
H E Shaikh Khalifa bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, President of the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities, emphasised the importance of Bahrain's participation in the Biennale.
"The International Architecture Exhibition at La Biennale di Venezia is a global platform, where we proudly showcase Bahrain's rich architectural and urban heritage, as well as our commitment to sustainability and innovation in the face of environmental challenges," he said. "Our participation is a testament to our dedication to enriching the global architectural landscape with inspiring and practical solutions."
To bring the pavilion's vision to life, the call for proposals seeks to assemble a multidisciplinary team of up to five members, including at least one Bahraini national or resident, who will collaborate to bring the pavilion's vision to life. The initiative aims to support the growth of Bahrain’s architecture and design sector, while fostering international cultural exchange.
Interested participants are encouraged to submit their proposals by the deadline of August 15. ✤

The summer heat is truly upon us and if, like me, you've got the post-holiday blues or are simply looking to treat yourself to some rest and relaxation, then look no further than a staycation at Conrad Bahrain Financial Harbour, located on the Manama seafront.
I recently had the pleasure of taking a mid-week break at this swanky hotel and experiencing its superb hospitality first-hand.
A Welcoming Retreat
Coming through the revolving doors of the property, we stepped straight into the main lobby where the lovely Adilya Ryspayeva, Food and Beverage Sales Manager, warmly greeted us with bottled water, a welcome respite on a scorching hot day. As we were being swiftly checked in, the friendly Front Office Manager, Mrudu Nair, graciously insisted on a late check out so we could experience the hotel’s comforts at leisure, which we happily accepted.
The reception area, featuring a striking black marble desk and gleaming lighting fixtures, blended modern sophistication with subtle elegance. Contemporary art hung proudly on the walls and throughout the hotel, adding a stylish and cosmopolitan feel to the property. With a great first impression, the porter escorted us to the button-less, smart lifts that whisked us off to our room.
Room With a View
Our King Two Bedroom Residential Suite was high up on
the 22nd floor of the 25-storeyed hotel.
As soon as we entered the room, the electric curtains parted, with the large floor-to-ceiling windows flooding the space with natural light to reveal sprawling 180-degree views of Bahrain Bay and the city. This was one of the highlights of our stay – we just couldn’t get enough of the breathtaking vistas throughout the suite.
We discovered a welcome plate of beautifully decorated chocolate and petit fours – a lovely touch and a delicious start to our staycation.
The thoughtfully designed interior exuded elegance and boasted sleek lines and a sophisticated neutral colour palette of grey, brown and brass with bursts of teal green.
A large sofa bed anchored the living room, complemented by a contemporary coffee table, an accent chair, a plush carpet, decorative pillows and modern art – an inviting arrangement ideal for relaxation and social gatherings. A sleek entertainment centre, with a large 65-inch HDTV, separated the living area from a small conversation nook with comfortable seating.
The airy, open-plan design flowed seamlessly into the dining area, which featured a curved six-seater table, paired with teal upholstered chairs and a minimalist chandelier hanging above. Meanwhile, the functional kitchenette, with dark wood cabinetry and essential appliances, included tea and coffee making facilities, microwave, oven, dishwasher, washing machine and dryer and even pots, pans, plates and cutlery.
Our suite had two bedrooms, both with en suite bathrooms
and a separate guest washroom. The master bedroom provided stunning panoramic views of the cityscape and was beautifully decorated with swan-shaped towel art and rose petals, creating a romantic setting. The centrepiece was the luxurious king-sized bed, which had a circular decorative panel above the headboard and a cushioned, teal footboard bench.
The room was furnished with sleek nightstands with brass, pendulum-like bedside lamps and a small work desk. A plush, curved sofa by the window provided a cosy spot to relax and enjoy the splendid view. The fitted wardrobes, with ample space, housed bathrobes, slippers, a hairdryer and a small safe.
The modern bathrooms were tastefully designed with both a hand and rain shower, along with a bathtub in the master en suite. I loved the lavish amenities from the European luxury brand, BYREDO, which had a lovely mild fragrance that lingered on my skin for hours.
The meticulously equipped suite, which sleeps five, is ideal for a family staycation or an indulgent couple’s retreat for a special occasion.
Café Tomo
After a tour of the room, we headed down to Café Tomo for a quick pick-me-up. This open-plan coffee shop on the lobby level, surrounded by high ceilings and a grand staircase, continued the chic design found throughout the hotel. A stylish and cosy spot, the café offers tea, coffee and fresh juices, along with a selection of over-the-counter cakes, pastries and cookies. We opted for zataar and chocolate croissants and the lemon, pecan and chocolate chip cookies, all of which went down a treat with our rich and perfectly blended Americanos.
Recreation and Leisure
During our stay, we had the opportunity to try the 24hour, fully equipped fitness room, located on the 24th floor, featuring state-of-the-art exercise equipment. Usually, I’m not overly eager to jump on a treadmill but I have to admit there was something very uplifting and motivating about working out with the stunning skyline outside.
With separate facilities for men and women, we relaxed our sore muscles, post-workout, by unwinding in the peaceful steam and sauna rooms, which again offered incredible city views, for a truly meditative experience. Finally, we headed to the rooftop on the 25th floor, adjacent to SUSHISAMBA. This spot is famous for its prominent flame orange-coloured tree by the pool. Standing tall and visible from the highway below, it’s like a beacon beckoning diners to the lively world of SUSHISAMBA.
The outdoor pool, with its 360-degree views of downtown Manama, was a sight to behold and looked especially spectacular at sunset – truly Instagram-worthy and not to be missed!
SUSHISAMBA
For dinner, we eagerly ventured to SUSHISAMBA to experience its unique culinary concept. With excellence
at its heart, this international brand is a tri-cultural restaurant and bar offering dishes from Japanese, Brazilian and Peruvian cuisine.
Entering the venue, the soulful and energetic vibe was immediately apparent. The courteous Restaurant Manager, Mina Mishelle, gave us a quick tour – the Amazonianinspired décor, with its lush foliage, green and terracotta colour scheme and lively South American music, was ideal for dinner. The sophisticated yet cosy fine dining setting featured an impressive open kitchen, dim lighting and intimate table arrangements that offered spectacular nighttime views. I don’t think I’ve ever been to a restaurant that balances food, music and ambience so well. I absolutely loved its unique vibe – it certainly ticked all my boxes for a great night out!
The friendly and enthusiastic Executive Chef, Sergio Medina, greeted us at our table, briefed us about the cuisine and gave us his recommendations. We tried a variety of expertly prepared dishes, with the standouts being Salmon Ceviche, Vegetable Taquitos, Black Cod with Aji Rice and Samba Veggie, all paired deliciously with Sambatini mocktails. We finished our meal on a sweet note with assorted mochi – our stomachs and souls perfectly satiated. Truly one of the major highlights of our stay, the restaurant delivered exactly what it promised, exceptional food, creative drinks and service to match.
Trade Room
After our sumptuous feast, we briefly stopped by the Trade Room on the mezzanine floor. A classy bar-lounge, its bank theme featured mock safes and unique ornamental pieces. As soon as we entered, we were greeted by a large gold vault, which can be used to store guests’ precious belongings. The entrance had sliding smoke doors that ensured privacy for guests and prevented smoke from escaping the bar. The mood lighting, thick maroon curtains and soft background music created an intimate ambience, perfect for a nightcap or a quiet evening with friends.
The lounge offers light bites and a wide variety of drinks, including spirits, cocktails and mocktails. We opted for Coco and Berry Garden, delightful mocktails that were a fitting end to a very enjoyable evening.
Breakfast
The next morning, we returned to SUSHISAMBA for breakfast and enjoyed a lavish spread featuring a variety of croissants, pastries and bagels, continental delicacies, made-to-order eggs, fresh cheeses, breakfast tacos and Arabic dishes, as well as other delicious accompaniments. The welcoming staff also offered us a fresh ginger and kale concoction to kick-start our morning, along with a map of Bahrain with a QR code for top places to visit – a nice touch, especially for newcomers.
All too quickly, our staycation came to an end. From luxuriously elegant suites with stunning views to exceptional dining and impeccable hospitality, every detail ensured we had an enjoyable and memorable experience. Thank you, Conrad Bahrain Financial Harbour, we’ll be back! ✤
FACT spent the day in the new Audi S8, a high-end luxury saloon with all the right parts in all the right places. ELEGANTLY ENHANCED
The Audi A8 has been a symbol of status and prestige for the brand since 1994. The fourth generation of this luxury saloon was released in 2017, raising the bar to a new level concerning power, look and equipment. As an initial design model, many enthusiasts agree that the A8 revealed the future design language of this world-renowned German car manufacturer, consequently becoming the progressive face of the brand until the present day.
Audi recently launched the new A8, an enhanced version of this iconic motor vehicle. This month we had the good fortune of test-driving the latest generation (2024) Audi S8, compliments of the team at Audi Centre Bahrain. This sporty version of the A8 proved to be nothing less than a user-centred symbiosis of masterful comfort and dynamic handling, jam-packed with high-value technology and intelligent functions.
Distinguished Exterior Design
Despite the Brilliant Black colour of our S8 endowing our test drive model with an understated yet classy appearance, once we started inspecting the model, we were taken by the reworked exterior design, one that exudes a sense of both confidence and athleticism.
The singleframe grille of Audi’s flagship vehicle is now wider, adorned with chrome angles that increase in size from bottom to top. We also noticed that the side intakes are now freshly styled and in a more upright position. The HD Matrix LED headlamps are another noticeable update, further accentuating the car’s refreshed appearance.
From side-on, we found the luxury saloon’s progressive character particularly eye-catching. We immediately appreciated the stretched lines of the body that emphasise the model’s extended wheelbase, along with the wide wheel arches that hint at the standard quattro drive system. Enhancing the dynamic look of the S8 is the rocker panel area with its concave shape, ending in a blade pointing towards the road. The aluminium-look side mirrors add yet another touch of class to the striking exterior. Once at the rear, we were captivated by the wide chrome clasps, the customisable taillight signature with digital OLEDs and the continuous, segmented light strip. We found the diffusor insert in the bumper to be delicately accentuated, now redesigned with horizontal bars. One of the characteristic sporty design details exclusive to the S8 is the four flow-optimised pipes under a circumferential contour.
Refined Interior
Slipping inside the S8, we were instantly taken by the spacious and tailored feel of the cabin. This area is accentuated by the abundance of natural light from the glass panoramic sunroof. At night, this open and welcoming space is enhanced by the Ambient Light Package Plus that elegantly stages the interior. We found the seating in both front and back to be of exceptional quality, providing the perfect balance of support and comfort. Black with red trim, these classy-looking seats feature Valetta leather upholstery, velvety leather headrests and precise perforations in the seat covers. The power-adjustable front
seating proved particularly impressive with its memory function and ventilation features.
The cockpit offers a near-perfect layout, with a well-designed centre console and all controls located in practical positions. The leather-wrapped, multi-function steering wheel has been masterfully designed and feels great in hand. No matter where we looked, our eyes were greeted by high-end materials, firstclass trimmings and upscale finishes.
Adding to the day-to-day convenience of the vehicle is an electronically opening and closing luggage compartment lid and effective four-zone climate control.
High-end Tech & Infotainment
Once able to tear our eyes away from the intricacies of the interior design, our attention settled on the exceptional tech.
The new S8 features the brand’s MMI touch response operating concept, accessed through two displays (10.1-inch and 8.6-inch) and natural voice operation. All we had to do to engage this system was to say the words ‘Hey Audi’!
Further accentuating the tech-savvy nature of the S8 is the completely digital Audi virtual cockpit, with the optional head-up display. This user-friendly feature displays important information directly in the driver’s line of sight, thereby removing the need for eyes to be taken off the road.
But wait, it doesn’t stop there. We were soon captivated by the standard MMI Navigation Plus, supported by the third-generation modular infotainment toolkit, MIB3. The likewise standard online services from Audi Connect augment the navigation system, ensuring a practical and efficient setup.
We soon discovered a rear seat remote mounted in the centre armrest via which we could control many infotainment functions. This control unit features an OLED display and is about as big as a modern smartphone.
Another must-mention feature is the exceptional Bang & Olufsen Advanced Sound System. A 1,920-watt amplifier drives 23 speakers, delivering cinema-quality sound that helped to deliver the perfect soundtrack for our on-road testing.
This sporty version of the A8 proved to be nothing less than a user-centred symbiosis of masterful comfort and dynamic handling, jampacked with highvalue technology and intelligent functions.”
Imposing Power & Performance
Despite how beautiful this car is inside and out; it was engaging the ignition that was our highlight of the day. The new S8 makes all the right noises with sound flaps in the exhaust system ready to sharpen the roars when desired.
Our test drive model was powered by the Audi S8 TFSI quattro drive system, featuring a 4.0-litre, twin-turbo V8 mild-hybrid technology (MHEV) engine that delivers an impressive 571hp and 800Nm of torque and it’s connected to a fast and gently toggling eight-step Tiptronic transmission.
As soon as pressure was applied to the right pedal, we were hard-pressed against our seats as the luxury saloon raced from 0-100km/h in just 3.8 seconds! Add an electronically capped top speed of 250km/h to the equation and you have one capable car.
With the abundance of power on offer, we were grateful for the inclusion of the predictive active suspension, sport differential, dynamic all-wheel steering and an anti-lock braking system that helped to keep this mechanical beast in check.
Throughout our day, we thoroughly enjoyed the smooth and powerful drivetrain of the S8 that provided a responsive yet serene driving experience, over which we always had full control. An extensive range of driver assistance systems and safety features added to our complete confidence in the vehicle.
Our Verdict
In the new S8, Audi has achieved a level of comfort, performance and technology that is sure to stand out in the full-size luxury saloon segment.

STAY FRESH
Extend the shelf life of fruit and vegetables in the fridge with this handy device.
Shelfy by Vitesy is an innovative fridge purifier that combines a compact design with practical utility.
The device uses an innovative and sustainable nanomaterialbased photocatalytic technology which eliminates pollutants within the filter. Photocatalysis is a safe chemical reaction that absorbs air pollutants and turns them into harmless elements. By removing ethylene molecules (the main offender responsible for the ripening of fruits and vegetables) from the air, Shelfy promotes the slowing of the ripening process minimising the spoilage of fruit and vegetables by removing bacteria, microorganisms and odours from the fridge. This in turn extends the shelf life of food by up to around 12 days. Moreover, Shelfy doesn’t work continuously while inside the refrigerator, it instead operates by maintaining purification cycles that alternate between periods when it is active and when it is inactive on an hourly basis. This functionality allows Shelfy to efficiently conserve battery power without compromising its effectiveness.
The device can switch between three efficient energy modes comprising: Eco – which optimises battery consumption for as long as possible; Crisper – specifically used when placing the device in the crisper drawer; and Performance – when using Shelfy’s purifying power to its fullest capabilities. The gadget is crafted from high-quality materials and, more
importantly, it includes a washable and reusable filter. Also, the Vitesy Hub app offers additional Shelfy features, such as monitoring the status of the refrigerator through various parameters; toggling between modes; receiving useful information on Shelfy's filter and refrigerator maintenance; and more. ✤

The General Manager of First Motors shares his family passion for cars and talks about his impressive career, the Korean automotive market and his many hobbies!
Your new role at First Motors is an exciting opportunity. How do you plan to tackle the challenges of keeping the dealership competitive in today's fast-changing market?
I've been in the automotive industry for almost 27 years. My career started in America, then I moved to the UK in 2005 and to Bahrain in 2011. My passion has always been automotive. I'm an automotive and heavy equipment engineer by profession and I also hold an MBA.
At First Motors, dealing with Hyundai and Genesis has been a learning experience. The Korean market is growing rapidly and their cars are well-engineered and offer great comfort at a good price. I see Hyundai as a premium product and Genesis as a luxury product with plenty of growth opportunity. The key to staying competitive is leveraging Korean technology, which is taking over the world with its user-friendly gadgets and wellengineered, comfortable cars. Additionally, focusing on excellent customer service and building long-term relationships with customers is crucial. We aim to sell not just a car but a lifetime of value and satisfaction to our customers.
With an impressive career of more than 20 years in the automotive field, what drives your passion for the industry?
My passion for cars also comes from my family; my grandfather and dad were in the car business, so it runs in my blood. The automotive industry is dynamic and ever-evolving, which keeps me motivated and passionate. Every day brings new challenges and opportunities to innovate and improve. I love meeting people and networking, so dealing with manufacturers, negotiating and providing excellent customer service are very fulfilling aspects of my job.
If you could take any car on a cross-country road trip, which model would you choose and why?
All Hyundai and Genesis models are exceptionally exciting to drive, each with unique features. However, for a cross-country road trip, I would choose the Santa Fe. It is ideal for different terrains and has a lifetime warranty and a five-year service package, making it a great choice for such a journey. The Santa Fe's advanced safety features, comfortable interior and powerful performance make it perfect for long drives across diverse landscapes.
What are you driving at the moment and what is your favourite feature about the car?
I don't personally own a car but I drive different Hyundai and Genesis models every three months. The most exciting cars for me are the G90 Genesis and the GV80 Coupe. They’ve got tons of features, are very user-friendly and offer an unbelievable driving experience. Rotating between these models allows me to experience the best of both worlds in terms of performance and luxury.
Shifting gears, what's your ideal weekend getaway or favourite hobby to relax outside of work?
I'm passionate about singing and have performed in some concerts with female playback singers, even though I'm not formally trained. I also enjoy boating, fishing and travelling. In Bahrain, my top hobby is networking and interacting with the community, which aligns with my passion for meeting people and building connections. ✤

SIMPLE FLAVOURS, JOYFUL FOOD
From learning music to opening his own restaurant, L’ORTO’s new Executive Chef Antonio Camilli has come a long way in his culinary endeavours. He talks about his passion for food and the creative process behind his signature dish.
Raised in Italy, you were in London studying music when you decided to become a chef. What drew you to a life in the kitchen?
I must admit that I didn’t really understand the chef’s life at first, too much work, too little money. An entire life of sacrifices, for what?
It was only when I worked for the renowned Chef Joel Robuchon that I realised how powerful this job could be. It was an open view kitchen and I would take a look at people enjoying their food. Their faces and smiles when those pieces of art reached the dining table made me forget my tiredness and stress.
I remember, this particular couple sitting at the counter enjoying their meal, saw me having a bad day and getting stick from the chef as usual. They left me a note: “Don’t give up! What you guys do is pure gold. Thanks for the amazing evening.” That note made my day, they were having a beautiful evening and I felt that I had played a role in it.
After that night, my life changed forever. I have a mission to fulfil, to make people happy whenever they eat my food.
You’ve since worked all over the world gaining experience with some of the biggest names in the business from Angela Hartnett to the late, great Joel Robuchon. What would you
say were the most important things you learned during this period?
The three ‘F’s – to be firm, fair and friendly. You need more than cooking skills in order to be a great chef.
In 2023, you opened your own restaurant, Santavoglia, in Lecce, Italy. What has inspired you to now come to Bahrain to work with L’ORTO?
Ambition. I want to create an international project, a bridge between my restaurant in Puglia and Bahrain. I want to be able to give my team a chance to grow within the two restaurants. I also truly loved L’ORTO’s idea of fun dining.
What is your signature dish, how was it developed and what makes it popular?
Tagliolino, smoked butter, chives and bottarga. I always work on a three-ingredient rule to create my dishes – three flavours that work alongside each other in order to find the right balance. For this particular dish, you have the smokiness of butter, the sweetness of bottarga and the tanginess of chives, all perfectly conveyed by the simplicity of fresh pasta. ✤
A DAZZLING DEBUT
Kaya is to be found on the rooftop of the GEO building next to the Gulf Hotel and offers what it describes as modern fusion of Mediterransian cuisine.
A swift ride up 40-plus floors in the elevator took us to the entranceway, which is decorated with gold coated sparkling bottles, their crystal stoppers reflecting the ambient lighting. More crystal is suspended from the dark-hued ceilings in eye-catching, sculpted mobiles, while, inside, there’s a very art deco feel with elegant geometric arches, plush velvet seating and more dark tones, offset by walls of windows.
We were introduced to Head Chef Ahmad Zaki and Jeffrey Santillan, Head Sushi Chef, who have experience with the likes of Nobu and Zuma in Dubai and have brought their highly experienced team with them. Both were delightfully welcoming and happy to chat about their signature dishes, which we were soon to try.
We started with Stracciatella (don’t be fooled, it’s on the menu as burrata but Chef Ahmad explained that stracciatella works better and the burrata supply here is not stable enough), an amazing combo, creamy but not too rich and totally benefitted by the addition of caramelised walnuts, which I’ve never had before but am now completely smitten by for the smoky sweetness they brought to the dish overall. This was a joint favourite with both myself and my dining companion, to which we kept returning throughout our meal. It’s served with lots of greens in mildly citrusy sisho pesto and yuzu miso which give a unique umami hint of both salt and savoury.
Our next starter was the steam bun burger – proudly emblazoned with Kaya, like a brand, across the top of the bread. The burger was juicy and the accompaniments made for an interesting mouthful. A platter of sushi, sashimi and nigiri came next. The chefs explained that the tuna sashimi – which tasted beautifully fresh –comes from Spain and they have installed a minus-160º freezer to keep it that way. Both the sushi and nigiri sported a range of delicious toppings with Chef Jeffrey explaining that, at Kaya, they like to do things a little differently. The rice is served slightly warm, to offset the coldness of the fish, and the toppings are used to tease out the flavours.
Of the tuna nigiri topped with yuzu koshō, my dining companion declared “that felt like fun on my tongue”. I absolutely adored the sushi with scallop, which felt like the very best kind of comfort food, rich, but not too rich, tasty and with the sweetness of the shellfish beautifully complemented by the flavourful topping of spicy mayo and spring onions.
For mains, we chose the Lamb Rack from the Robata menu and Black Cod with Spicy Yuzu Miso. The lamb was tender, succulent and delicately pink inside with a gentle but flavoursome kick from the marinade of Gochujan (chilli) teriyaki.
The black cod, which has long been a favourite of mine, didn’t disappoint. It’s marinated for two days with spicy yuzu miso and then oven roasted. The delicate flesh literally separated under our chop sticks and the misu coating gave an almost floral, sweet and utterly satisfying tang. The dish comes with a dipping sauce but I was more than happy to just tuck into the cod (with a little bit of the aforementioned Strachiatella).
After the mains we took a break, to fully familiarise ourselves with the surroundings of the venue. Sophisticated and clublike in feel, Kaya boasts stages and podiums on which an everchanging roster of artists perform. From dancers to musicians, we were lucky enough to witness an unexpectedly wonderful operatic rendition of Andrea Boccelli’s famed Con Te Partiro – two favourites in one afternoon for me.
And, one important thing to know about Kaya is that, come the cooler weather, the whole roof retracts guaranteeing stunning views from the venue’s rooftop setting. Can’t wait to experience that. Returning to our table, it was time for dessert and to say ‘impressive’ would be a huge understatement.
First to arrive was one of the Kaya signatures, the Cigar Surprise. What can I tell you about this without giving away the surprise?
Suffice to say, there is smoke and chocolate, it’s very impressive and if you’re a fan of wasabi with fruit, you should definitely go for this. OK, you’ll see the picture, so I can tell you, this is a perfectly recreated stogie made of chocolate with a nutty raspberry centre accompanied by a raspberry-wasabi sorbet. The quality and depth of flavour of the chocolate is really evident and its pairing with raspberry offers just the right sweet yet tart note to cut through the richness.
But the star of the show, and the deserved favourite of Chef Jeffrey’s clearly very discerning wife, was the Fromage Brulee with Red Fruits & Sakura. This is like a cheesecake but better, if that’s possible. The brulee itself is remarkably light and delicately flavoured but also creamy giving a textural treat, while the red berries provide a deliciously acidic contrast which explodes on
the tongue and the Sakura – cherry blossom cream – imparted a subtly sweet, slightly almond-like flavour (not at all cherry tasting as you might expect). Spoonfuls of this left both my dining companion and myself in absolute bliss, which is quite some achievement when you consider the excellence of what had gone before.
I’m told, I missed out by not trying the Warm Matcha Pistachio Pudding – however, by this stage, there really was no further stomach space, which, happily, leaves me with a great reason to return.
I can safely say, an evening at Kaya promises a treat for both foodies and those who want to enjoy great entertainment, not to mention a really interesting bar selection. But, don’t take my word for it, go see for yourself. ✤ GO: CALL 1717 1722
A BRUNCH THAT DELIVERS
Liz O’Reilly discovered an eternal favourite just got better with a visit to the
I’ve been in Bahrain for more years than I care to mention and, in my time, I’ve tried an awful lot of brunches –some good, some not so much. But, taste buds and sense of fun at the ready, I’m always up for sampling a new Friday offering and the latest launch at Trader Vic’s at The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain did not disappoint.
Running on the first Friday of each month and offering excellent value for money, it was no surprise to find the car park and lobby area very busy when we arrived – a tip, the brunch starts at 1pm but if you want to avoid the crowds, I’d suggest arriving a little early or a bit late.
We were seated in the large open area where the stage is situated – the better to enjoy the live entertainment, of which more later. The food was set up in the outer area, no smoke to contend with there.
For those who don’t know Trader’s, the décor is Polynesian influenced with lots of bamboo and wood panelling, as well as the iconic tiki masks, all offset by an abundance of greenery and fresh flowers.
And, even though it’s brunch, there’s no lowering of standards, the tablecloths are still starched and pristine white, the tableware classy alongside crystal glasses and each space is decorated with a fresh flower.
We settled into our comfortable seats and were soon served with glasses of sparkling – much gratitude to our waiter, who kept us seamlessly topped up throughout the afternoon.
After a quick catch up on the week’s happenings with my dining companion, we headed to the food section to see what was on offer and I can honestly say, there was something for everyone to enjoy from pasta, potstickers and Asian live cooking stations to roast meats, sushi and a huge salad bar, as well as an impressive dessert selection.
I have always been rather partial to Traders’ Island Tidbits, so was delighted to see all the elements of the best-selling pupu platter available – crispy prawns, crab Rangoon, jalapeño cheese balls and chicken wings – alongside an array of dipping sauces.
My all-time favourites, jalapeño cheese balls, were crunchy on the outside giving way to a warm gooey, melting centre, decadently delicious. The crispy prawns were chunky and moreish, their sweet flesh enveloped in a tasty, crumbly coating. The chicken wings had a delicate whisper of fennel or five spice imparting a boost of flavour. And the crab Rangoon with its flaky, fried wanton outer and cheesy crab filling was perfection, an adorable starter to whet our appetites.
Billed as an Afro-Latin Brunch, we were delighted when the entertainment started with a Cuban band banging out great Latino beats. I could hardly stay in my seat, I’m a great fan of South American rhythms and the urge to move my feet was almost irresistible.
However, before taking to the dance floor, we decided it was time for some more food. After picking a selection from the extensive sushi section, my dining companion headed to the Potstickers Station where she found chicken and duck versions of the everpopular dumplings, their delicately seasoned fillings perfectly complemented by garlic or soy-chilli dipping sauces, as well as sriracha mayo for a kick of heat.
I made a beeline for the Carving Station for a healthy portion of roasted US beef striploin and watched in mouth-watering anticipation as a new joint was brought out and carved, the juices pouring generously from the succulent meat. I added seasonal vegetables and a side of mushroom sauce but, to be honest, the sauce went untouched. Such was the robust depth of flavour from the beef that no accompaniment was necessary.
Executive Chef Marwan Slim soon came to say hello and, with a little bit of food envy going on, he escorted my dining companion for her very own serving of striploin, which was eaten in silent but obvious enjoyment.
Though almost full, I paid a visit to the pasta station and was very pleased to see plenty of veggie options in the toppings. I must say I was sorely tempted as I watched the steaming bowls of creamy goodness leaving the chef’s hands but I, sensibly, decided to save some space for dessert and, instead, headed back to our table to enjoy the amazing entertainment.
Bringing the Afro-Latin theme vividly to life, performers from La Vida Dance Studio put on a show for us with fabulous costumes and slick footwork ensuring just about everyone in the place wanted to join in. From choreographed set pieces to leading guests in an impromptu conga, they were undoubtedly the stars of the afternoon getting everyone involved and, alongside the band, really giving us a carnival feeling.
In true brunch style, we danced and sang along – this, I promise, is a great way to make new friends and highly recommended for staving off the almost inevitable Friday food coma. And, when the dancing stopped, it was time for a prize draw – we’d all been
given numbered tickets – with winners heading to the stage accompanied by disco beats and prizes adding to the excitement. Now, you would be forgiven for thinking I’ve forgotten about the desserts. If you know me at all, you’ll be aware this is not something that will ever happen! However, with plenty of great food accompanied by bubbles and dancing, I have to admit, I really only visited the sweet station to look. From brownies and sorbet to panna cotta, rice pudding and an abundance of cake and fresh fruit, I decided this section would have to wait until next time. I want to do it proper justice.
I can honestly say the new brunch at Trader Vic’s is one of the best I’ve been to in a long time, from service and food to top-notch entertainment, it delivers all the way and I’m already planning to return for the next one. Hope to see you there. ✤
HEALTHY EATING WITH CLEAN FLAVOURS
Nirvana’s new vegan menu was a delightful experience for Fernanda Langhammer as she tried some authentic plant-based versions of Indian dishes.
The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain, is always an excellent destination for exquisite food options. There are 16 eateries (with exciting pop-up concepts) offering an array of cuisines, such as Mexican, French, Thai, Italian, a fine-dining steakhouse and much more. But I went there this time to try the new vegan menu at Nirvana, the well-established Indian restaurant. As a former vegan, I was super excited to investigate their take on the concept. I brought along a connoisseur of vegetarian Indian food as my dining companion for an in-depth experience and the hotel’s Food and Beverage Director, William Fily, also joined us.
The entrance to the eatery sets the tone: an intricate wooden structure with two bronze elephants welcoming you into a portal that transports you to India. With decadent décor inspired by the country’s palaces – many of the panels and elegant arches carved in wood take their influence from the Rajasthan region – there is a royal vibe in the air with a lot of deep-red accents. The seating area displays black chairs with golden details and sofas in paisley prints with fringed cushions. The kitchen is behind glass framed by the same wooden structure, and in front of it is a duo of musicians playing traditional folk music with a mix of Bollywood instrumental tunes. The live music performed with the conventional instruments, tabla and sitar, creates a pleasant visual and sonorous atmosphere, adding an extra touch to this impressive dining room.
The menu has a lot of recipes originally from the north of India, where Executive Indian Chef Mahipal Singh comes from, as well as many of the smiley staff. Mohamed Mohsen, the Restaurant
Manager, and Manoj, our waiter for the night, were responsible for delivering the food to our table and explaining each item with enthusiasm. Chef Mahipal has been the maestro of Nirvana for the past 21 years, so he knows exactly what his guests are looking for; the demand for vegan options influenced the creation of the special menu. Some signature dishes will also be added to the carte during summer, offering sensational new options to the well-established selection of dishes.
In this ambience of good music, fantastic company and excellent service, the dishes started to reach our table. Instead of the traditional bread and butter from Western restaurants, at Indian eateries, you get poppadom (a crispy, deep-fried or cooked with dry heat dough) plain and with black pepper, accompanied by mint and mango chutney that I couldn’t stop returning to throughout the dinner.
The cold appetiser was the Kachoomber Salad, made with diced carrots, cucumber, avocado and bell pepper and dressed in lemon juice, olive oil and chaat masala. According to my dining companion, kachoomber means small pieces and the dish reminded me of a ‘garden’ tartare – it was crunchy and refreshing with a subtle spicy kick. The warm appetiser was Chowk Ki Tikki, a pan-fried potato and pea patty served with tamarind, mint and raspberry chutney. Per my connoisseur companion, this dish is a popular street food that, at Nirvana, got an extra layer of flavour with the addition of the raspberry chutney. This was one of my favourite dishes; it was warm, the shredded pieces of potato gave a delightful texture to the small patties and the spices were spot on. I could eat this every day!
It was time to explore the mains. Chef Mahipal explained that the menu is available à la carte, so each dish is served separately but, for us that night, he prepared a sample of them all so we could taste everything. The star dish of the night for my friend was the Pindi Choley, a traditional Punjabi chickpea curry that is not too creamy but more on the dry side. The addition of dry mango powder gives a delightful tanginess to the recipe. My favourite main followed, Bhindi do Pyaaza, which is okra cut into small pieces and cooked with lots of onions and Indian spices. The okra was crunchy and the sweetness of the onions contrasted beautifully with the earthy flavour of this vegetable, which I really enjoy when cooked well. For a potato spree, we had Aloo Gobi, potato and cauliflower with spices and herbs, and Jeera Aloo, potatoes prepared with cumin seeds. Of course, a dal (a typical dish made with split pulses) was mandatory and we were served Dal Tadka, composed of yellow and black lentils cooked with herbs and spices, garnished with cumin, garlic and coriander seeds. It was creamy and the particularity of this dal is that the spices are tempered separately and added when the pulses are cooked. The spread was accompanied by Jeera Rice, which was very fluffy and aromatic, and a selection of flatbreads: Missi Roti (a gluten-free option) and regular Roti. To end our journey into this spectacular plant-based menu was a fruit platter with strawberries, blueberries, melon, watermelon and dragon fruit. But Chef Mahipal had one last card in his sleeve, a vegan version of Sabudana Kheer, a creamy and thick pudding made with tapioca pearls, almond milk, sugar and cardamom. The saffron drizzle, raspberry and roasted hazelnut made each spoonful of this version of a rice pudding even more delightful. Nirvana means achieving a state of enlightenment and I can say that the vegan feast was full of flavour, delicate and well-balanced with the right amount of spiciness that took our tummies into a state of peace and happiness. If you are a regular guest, stay tuned for the new additions to the menu – if you are not, don’t miss out on dining like a Maharaja! ✤

IN THE CLUB
Membership of an exclusive club, defined by the excellence of the yarns and the mastery of the workmanship, is the inspiration for Malo Cashmere’s SS24 collection
Seaside notes and holiday horizons are rendered with timeless elegance and effortlessly chic style invoking places where the evening breezes refresh tanned skin, calling for a light stole or sweater.
Born in Portofino, Italy, in the 1970s, Malo’s light, elegant, colourful cashmere remains the blend of choice for cooler summer evenings by the coast.
With notes of dusty blues and light sands, the collection’s nuances recall waves and endless skies coupled with warm browns, fresh whites, the green of Mediterranean scrub and the lilac of summer flowers.
Sweaters boast inlays, net wefts and sailor ropes creating interwoven effects and pieces in light cashmere and incredibly soft cotton are made with open and grainy weaves like beach mats. Pullovers are designed with irregular yacht stripes that recall the rippling of the waves on the horizon.
For him, the sea wolf jacket in double cashmere carries the button with the 'à la marinière' theme which also enriches the deconstructed double-breasted women's jacket. Also, for men, the pea coat in superfine suede, lined with cotton, becomes the comfortable go-to for any occasion.
A slightly oversized, light cashmere garment and cotton trousers with cuffs at the ankle to protect from the sea are ideal whilst travelling. But once you've reached your destination, an unstructured jacket or a cashmere-silk sweater worn around the neck complete the more formal day look. Polo shirts with vertical stripes recall the deckchairs of the iconic ‘Le Club 55’ in
Saint Tropez. And there’s lots of linen, from jackets to trousers, from Bermuda shorts and garment dyed pieces, to shirts with cold dyeing for an aged effect.
For her, garments boast a holiday allure but with an everyday comfort, totally Made in Italy artisanal quality and a timeless style, with an Italian-French flavour. The collection offers a dressing gown coat in superfine double cashmere, in marine colours. A very light suede constructs a shirt-jacket and palazzo trousers. A sarong dress and large kaftans in garment-dyed habotai silk offer a super chic look. And knitwear develops as cashmere garments with a relaxed fit or a more feminine fit that follows the silhouette.
The sweaters and dresses feature side or shoulder openings, boat necklines on feminine and multifunctional fits, details that reveal the shoulders to the sun's rays. Super feminine polo shirts, dresses and bomber jackets with contrasting cuffs have been created in cablè cotton and there’s an abundance of linen and mulberry silk too. ✤

Need to Know:
Dark days are ahead as Victoria Neuman finds herself edging closer to reaching the Oval Office. And Homelander continues to build influence among the general public appealing to their worst instincts. The stakes are higher than ever for Butcher and the crew to save the world before it’s too late.
Creators: Eric Kripke
Cast: Karl Urban, Jack Quaid, Antony Starr, Erin Moriarty, Dominique McElligott, Jessie T. Usher, Laz Alonso, Chace Crawford, Tomer Capone, Karen Fukuhara
Why Is It Worth Watching?
The Boys are well and truly back in town! As the fourth season of the show continues, the absolute rollercoaster of a plot picks right back up where it left us at the end of last season. Having begrudgingly worked together to handle the greater threat that was Soldier Boy, archenemies Butcher (Karl Urban) and Homelander (Antony Starr) are back to bitterly hating each other. But this time, the drama gets even more shocking with Homelander realising that his current team, The Seven, aren’t half as good as they used to be. That’s when he unexpectedly recruits Sister Sage (known for being the smartest person on the planet) to join them. Things then start to take a sinister turn as her nefarious ideas are put into action.
Meanwhile, despite being on the verge of his demise due to abusing Compound V, Butcher finds himself even more determined to permanently take down Homelander and the rest of the Supes even if it’s the last thing he does. Buckle up as things are about to get even more weird!
The Bear Season 3 serves up another heaping plate of kitchen drama with a generous side of family dysfunction and several splashes of intensely joyful and distressing moments.”
Need to Know:
The Bear is a multiple Emmy-award winning American comedy-drama series. Carmen ‘Carmy’ Anthony Berzatto along with chef Sydney Adamu and the accidentality talented crew at The Beef have somehow managed to transform their hole-in-the-wall restaurant into a fine-dining establishment. But things are far from staying on track as they find themselves facing numerous new challenges.
Creator: Christopher Storer
Cast : Jeremy Allen White, Ayo Edebiri, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Lionel Boyce, Liza ColónZayas, Abby Elliott, Matty Matheson
Why Is It Worth Watching?
Returning after the outstanding Season 2 (which I personally consider among the best seasons of a TV show I’ve had the pleasure of viewing), The Bear Season 3 serves up another heaping plate of kitchen drama with a generous side of family dysfunction and several splashes of intensely joyful and distressing moments.
Carmy (Jeremy Allen White) is doing his best to keep his fancy new joint afloat but seems to be slowly unravelling under the immense pressure to keep things running smoothly. Then, on the other hand, his scruffy crew attempt to do their best while fumbling through fine dining like a bunch of bulls in a china shop.
On the surface the show does quite well building up the anxiety with the exceedingly tense scenes that do their best to portray the insanity that occurs behind the doors of a tightly run Michelin-star level restaurant.
But where the show truly shines is its nuance and the raw authentic feel with which it portrays the humanity of its characters, while handling topics like past traumas, personal demons, regrets, hope, love and more.
ON THE RECORD
RAP R&B ROCK
Bando Stone and the New World
By Childish Gambino
The multifaceted talents of Donald Glover range from standup to acting and writing (30 Rock, Community, Atlanta and the recent Mr. & Mrs. Smith series) and then prominent music projects (most notably 2013’s Because the Internet and 2016’s Awaken, My Love!). All of which make his contributions in the art and entertainment realms nothing short of remarkable! And now with Bando Stone and the New World, he releases his fifth and final studio album under his Childish Gambino moniker.
The album opens with a maddening Yeezus-style industrial hip-hop number on H3@RT$ W3RE M3@NT T0 F7¥. He then steps outside his comfort zone and tries his hand at a mini rock opera on the strikingly theatrical Lithonia Survive is equal parts electro and smooth jazz in the best ways and fades out with a pleasing saxophone outro. While Steps Beach exemplifies a calm dreaminess with Donald’s swooning falsetto. Real Love and Yoshinoya are two other favourites but sound nothing alike in any way.
Also, the album doubles as the soundtrack to an upcoming dystopian survival movie of the same name, that’s written and acted in by Donald.
POP
by Clario
Charm is the captivating third studio album by Clairo. It marks her debut as an independent artist following her previous releases with Fader and Republic. She teams up with Leon Michels on production for this project, crafting a collection of sincere and heartfelt songs.
The journey begins with Nomad, a contemplative track that reflects on the complexities of relationships. Next, Sexy To Some dives into the allure of new encounters, exploring the dynamics of desire and being desired with a mix of mystery and longing.
In Slow Dance, Clairo's ethereal vocals float effortlessly, creating a dreamy, carefree atmosphere. On Juna, a personal favourite, Clario is at her best, her delivery here is intimate and soft as if whispering right into your ear. Her recent live rendition on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, is worth watching if only to just see her imitate a trumpet on that beautiful outro!
Echo offers a psychedelic twist with its spacey synths and Clairo’s hypnotic, droning vocals. The album concludes with Glory Of The Snow, a wintry homage to the support and love she’s received, rounding out the album with a touch of warmth and gratitude.

What We’re (Still) Talking About
Feline Frenzy
We really didn’t want to do it. We promised ourselves, no commenting on the US election – it’s too painful! And we figured the social media post declaring ‘The rest of the world is watching America like America watched Tiger King’, pretty much said it all as we looked on in dumbfounded horror.
But then came JD Vance and his tonedeaf, derogatory comments about childless cat ladies running (and ruining) America. The presumptive Republican Vice Presidential candidate had been named only a matter of hours when his comments from a 2021 interview resurfaced and boy has he put the cat
among the pigeons.
A study by The Boston Globe calculated that America currently has 46 million, single-person, cat-owning households. And the memes, oh the social media memes over recent days have been absolutely joyous. Many of them feature the ultimate cat lady herself, Taylor Swift – single, childless cat owner with 283 million Instagram followers, along with another 32.8 million on TikTok and 95 million on X (formerly Twitter).
Sheesh, is that the sound of back pedalling we hear?
A Doggy Tale
We’re big fans of Marvel here in the FACT office. Particularly Deadpool and Wolverine – the characters, not the movie. Shockingly, we weren’t invited to the premiere, so we haven’t seen it yet. But what’s not to love about Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman ribbing each other mercilessly at every opportunity? And now we have even more reason to love this pair – enter stage left, Dogpool, AKA Mary Puppins. The new film is set to make a star (or should that be an even bigger star?) of a tiny, mixed-breed mutt who captures Deadpool’s heart and joins him on a journey through the multiverse.
Aside from Ryan and Hugh, we’re also big fans of all things canine and have long been a little disturbed at the idea of Britain’s Ugliest Dog contest. But, it seems Dogpool, or Peggy as she is otherwise known, came to director Shwan Levy’s attention having triumphed in the competition and, after a little on-set training, proved to be a natural.
The little pooch has really taken to the star treatment and even walked the red carpet like a pro at the film’s world premiere in New York. Seems it’s a dog’s life.
Pound of Flesh
Like many others around the region, the FACT team is made up of relentless F1 enthusiasts. We all have our favourite drivers and race days bring a certain frisson to the office. But, we have to admit, the sport has lost some of its sparkle in recent years with young Verstappen seemingly having it all his own way – nice for him but somewhat boring for the rest of us. So, this season’s cut and thrust has been refreshing with Mercedes AMG Petronas, McLaren, Ferrari and others piling on the pressure – and somewhat exposing the Red Bull champion’s temper tantrums along the way.
There was jubilation last weekend as
Mercedes seemingly took the one-two spots at Spa with George Russell in first and Sir Lewis Hamilton in second (though there were some who wondered if Lewis might be regretting his decision to don the iconic red suit of Ferrari next year).
That quickly turned to heartbreak for young Englishman George with news of his disqualification. It turned out his car was underweight at the conclusion of the race. It was only 1.5kg but, of course, in a high-stakes, big-money sport like F1, rules are rules. But, we couldn’t help thinking, we could gain that with just one good old English breakfast!
