Aleph IN MANY LETTERS Driven by a passionate interest in calligraphy, Lebanese artist Samir Al Sayegh has become a pioneer of modernism in the Arab world. ARTS INTERVIEW

“ART IS NOT TAUGHT OR LEARNED, AND THERE ARE ART STYLES AS MUCH AS THERE ARE ARTISTS. WE MUST NOT LEARN ART BUT CONTEMPLATE ART, WATCH IT, READ IT, LISTEN TO IT, ANALYSE IT, DISCUSS IT, AND HAVE A CONVERSATION WITH IT.” 90

fact magazine

SAMIR AL SAYEGH, considered as one of the most avant-garde Arab master calligraphers of his generation, seeks to liberate Arabic letters from the restrictions imposed by language and meaning. As an artist, poet, writer, art critic and historian, Samir is more than well equipped with the expertise and experience to do this. He has dedicated himself completely to the art of Arabic calligraphy, focusing on the purely aesthetic properties of the written word, over literal meaning, in order to create a universal visual language. His interest in traditional calligraphy as well as art and design led him to create new calligraphic typefaces and collaborations with numerous publications and fashion designers in Paris and Beirut. Samir’s drive to show calligraphy as not just a heritage art, but also a modern one, is something that began in his early childhood after his first encounter with a writing tool. “I remember the first time I discovered the pen in my father’s office,” he recalls. “I was amazed but also scared. When I tried to write, I was bewitched. I felt wings growing

ARTS INTERVIEW

on my body and the white papers were the wide blue sky.” Samir isn’t sure what it was, exactly, about poetry, prose or calligraphy that stopped him in his tracks from such a young age, but as life went on, his journey and relationship with these creative forms only grew stronger. Now, Samir believes that art, in its many forms, does not always hold a meaning of its own that we can name or describe. Instead, its meaning is complete when contemplated by the viewer. “Art is not taught or learned, and there are art styles as much as there are artists,” he says. “We must not learn art but contemplate art, watch it, read it, listen to it, analyse it, discuss it, and have a conversation with it. “It is not a set of rules or techniques and does not have fixed styles to apply. Art is life. It is also a vision, a language, knowledge, truth and a science,” Samir adds. Often uniting ornamentation with calligraphic script, Samir has developed a distinctive practice. Through the formal elements of line and space, he abstracts Arabic letters and words into dynamic geometric compositions, which often cover the entire surface of the artwork. Visually engaged with the modern art movement and geometric minimalism, Samir’s works bridge two artistic traditions to forge a unique contribution to the history of modernism.

“ W H AT IS IMP O RTAN T IS N OT W HAT YO U AS AN AU D IE N C E S E E , B U T H OW YO U S E E I T. T H E S U B J E C T I S N OT IMP O RTA N T, B U T H OW YOU AP P R OAC H IT.” So, what is it about calligraphy that has such a hold on Samir? “I like that it first existed on pages of the book but did not transfer into a sacred art,” he says. “I like that it grew, developed and shined in palaces but did not contribute in favour of rulers. I also like that it is an absolute art that is present in every time and place without being associated to a specific time and place. “And I, finally, like it because it is the way to the eye and the mirror to the soul. What I love about practicing calligraphy is this new horizon where it seems like it is the art of the future,” Samir explains. The exhibition, Aleph in Many Letters is based on Samir’s book of the same name. The texts and the artworks both strive to free the art of Arabic calligraphy from Arabic language in order to transcend it to its highest spheres as an art to read what cannot be read, and hear what cannot be heard, and see what cannot be seen. The exhibition presents a selection of recent artworks on canvas and paper. “What is important is not what you as an audience see, but how you see it,” he says. “The subject is not important, but how you approach it. I wish the viewer stands in front of my work as if standing in front of a tree, or as if listening to the wind. fact magazine

ARTS INTERVIEW

“I wish they would listen to what the straight lines are saying and what it feels like when they incline. What happens when lines meet or intersect and how connection and parallelism happen, and how the lines embrace one another,” Samir adds. To create the huge artworks of calligraphy, Samir makes and uses giant pens where the biggest one is 35cm wide, and which allows him to have wide lines with acrylic or ink on paper or fabric. In doing so, Samir is able to give the art of calligraphy strength, dynamic, speed and big shapes that can compete with fine art paintings. This means having equal participation in galleries and museums, too. For Samir, art also presents hope and promise, especially in a region that has become strife with war. “Exhibitions and art events are not only a positive phenomenon but rather a miracle that excites the mind and heart,” he tells us. “How can art exist in the heart of war, distraction, death, pain and this general deterioration that surrounds all our cities? “Logic and art critics say there cannot be art when there is no stability or normal life; there cannot be art activities when the daily social and cultural life is broken,” Samir continues. 94

fact magazine

“LOGIC AND ART CRITICS SAY THERE CANNOT BE ART WHEN THERE IS NO STABILITY OR NORMAL LIFE... BUT, REALITY SAYS OTHERWISE…” “But, reality says otherwise, there are art exhibitions and festivals despite all the darkness. Personally, in a moment of peace, I look at such events and I see a light, hope, and a promise.” Indeed, there is still hope that art could very well be one of the ways to salvation. At least, as long as positive people like Samir Al Sayegh believe it, practice it and share it. ARTS EXHIBITION that are intended to be striking, making a statement, just like the women and surroundings I see here in Bahrain.

SUNANDA DOCHERTY is an artist who has been designing and painting in various media for over 30 years. She is an MA (Hons) graduate in fashion design from the prestigious Central St. Martins College of Art, London. Her latest collection of work takes a fresh, dynamic perspective on the female form, inspired by her time in Bahrain. For most women, black clothing is a dominant colour throughout the region and can be seen by many as restrictive and limiting - Sunanda has observed the opposite. By reflecting their individualism, she has captured the essence and soul of the women of Bahrain in a powerful and dramatic way. Sunanda’s latest exhibition will feature a collection of large-scale, black-themed watercolours and a range of smaller paintings. The colour and tones are inspired by the environment of the region - from the country’s rich culture and natural resources – to the modern angular landscape of glass and steel. Here, we chat with Sunanda to learn more…

Do you face any challenges being an artist in the Middle East?

I haven’t faced any difficult challenges yet so far in Bahrain, if anything I’ve been supported by everyone that I’ve met. Most challenges I usually face are from where I’m from, the UK. Some people only make judgements on what the international media feed them and some of it isn’t good and rarely positive. The use of black and the strong women in my paintings may scare a typical western audience; they may be oblivious to the hidden beauty I’m trying to portray in them.

As an artist, who or what inspires you to continue producing art?

Bahrain has a wealth of culture and I’ve only scratched the surface but I have been greatly influenced already. I recently began work on my next collection, which is inspired by the patterns and fabric of motherhood that I see on a daily basis.

Tell us about your journey into art…

My journey into art started when I was very young, nothing else mattered to me apart from drawing. I always had a pencil and sketchbook in my hands. On completing my BA hons at Edinburgh college of art in fashion design, I was accepted into St Martins School of Art, London (now central St Martins) where I studied for my MA in fashion design. During the course it enabled me to work with the best in the design world. I lived and worked in London for six years, before moving back to Scotland to start a family. During this time I worked as a designer for a large M&S supplier. Subsequently, I started lecturing at Duncan of Jordanstone college of art at the university of Dundee, where I worked for 10 years as a lecturer in fashion and printed textiles.

Describe your artistic style…

My work is varied and I use as many materials as I can. But for this exhibition I have used watercolour, only black. I use this medium the most as I find it so flexible. Normally, people associate watercolour with landscapes, but I like 98

fact magazine

What’s your advice for budding artists?

“My work is stylised, I believe that imperfection is beautiful and this features in my work.” to push it in a different direction, it can be subtle but I’ve used it to show its strength, it can give so much more depth to a painting, adding so many layers.

Tell us about some of the tools and techniques used in your artwork…

My work is stylised, I believe that imperfection is beautiful and this features in my work. The main part of this exhibition are the large A1 paintings

Everyday is an inspiration and I believe that is all how artists are. We think and see things differently; I picture scenarios in my mind and set them into my sketchbook as soon as I can. I’m not one for computers and don’t use them in my work. It’s a fantastic tool but you cannot get the same satisfaction when you feel the weight of the brush or pencil on paper, knowing how much pressure to give. I’ve had students who have only used a computer and find difficulty in actually drawing. It’s fundamental for the new budding artist to go back to basics and get a feel for the pencil. I also believe in moving with the times, everything is available now, but simplicity, starting with the basics, can be the most effective. Learn from others, but preferably - get a good teacher! GO: Power Through Expression was curated by Stafford and Sharabi and will be on display at InTouch Gallery until December 31. Visit www.sunandadochertyartist.com for more about the artist.

The Hateful Eight What’s it about: Tarantino brings vengeance back onto the big screen and this time we’re going to post-Civil War Wyoming where a fiery bunch of bounty hunters take up refuge in the same cabin, to escape a blizzard. Their mysterious connection might prevent them from getting home safe.

DIRECTOR: Quentin Tarantino CAST: Samuel L. Jackson, Kurt Russell, Jennifer Jason Leigh WHY IT’S WORTH WATCHING? Quentin Tarantino has hardly ever (in our humble opinion, never) been accused of making a bad film, because, let’s face it, he’s pretty darn amazing at the whole movie-making thing. As Tarantino has grown throughout his career, so have the length of the films he’s directed, and The Hateful Eight is set to run over the three-hour mark. Though this might polarise some audiences, it also gives Tarantino breathing room to execute some awesome dialogue scenes, which is perfect for a film that is centred around eight strangers taking shelter in a single cabin. Tarantino described it as the “funniest snow Western ever made,” of course, with bloody implications. The trailer’s intense music really highlights the dark comedic moments between the characters, now, all you have to decide is are you a true cinephile who can tolerate such a lengthy running time, or are you a casual movie-goer who merely wants to see an entertaining film?

DIRECTOR: Nicholas Hytner CAST: Maggie Smith, Alex Jennings, Dominic Cooper WHY IT’S WORTH WATCHING? Three words to describe why we adore this film – Dame Maggie Smith! She is the glory of this simple yet wonderful piece of cinema in which she plays the part of Miss Shepherd with such a great poker-face and offers major laughs, even though we quickly learn that her character’s now vagrant life is the consequence of regret and tragedy. Witty and heart-wrenching at the same time, The Lady in the Van will definitely bring out all the good motives behind human kindness, and if that’s not enough, Maggie Smith’s kick-ass van will have you giving the film a thumbs up!

Well, there’s been only one name stirring up the music world this past month, and it’s the princess of Tottenham and conqueror of pop charts – Adele. Her newest musical offering sold somewhere in the range of 2.3 million copies in its first three days of release (wowzer!) so it’s safe to say that Adele’s fans have been waiting patiently for her new material. But, what is the new sound like? Well, at its best, 25 is powerful and progressive in a non-musical but more personal way. This is Adele all grown-up; she’s married, she’s a mother, and she’s not afraid to show the romanticism of her new life. The production on 25 is immaculate, and the vocal delivery is absolutely stunning. We love the high belts in Sweetest Devotion and the rich lower notes in River Lea, not to mention the piercing sounds of All I Ask and Million Years Ago. This is classic Adele with a more mature flair for lyrics, and though there’s little challenge in 25, her listeners will find the familiarity and comfort that is so associated with Adele. 102 fact magazine

Cupid’s Rage is the third book by Bahraini author Laala Kashef Alghata. Her first two books, Friendship in Knots (2003) and Behind the Mask: A Folded Heart (2006) were a children’s novel and a poetry collection respectively. Cupid’s Rage is collection of poetry on life and love, the shields we create to battle Cupid’s furious arsenal of arrows and finding ways to heal when our cracks are discovered. The collection is on life and love, written over a time span of three years between Bahrain and the UK. The publication of Friendship in Knots made Laala the first Bahraini to publish a book in English and the youngest author at the time.

With BIG-name guests including Beyonce, Noel Gallagher, Tove Lo and even a small recording from President Barack Obama, Coldpaly’s newest release has more than the usual rock sound that fans know and love. The “goodbye old Coldplay” comments will be out in full force as Chris Martin & Co are putting out a completely different beast of its own, unlike anything else they’ve released before. With elements reminiscent of X&Y, their teaser single, Adventure Of A Lifetime is a total disco banger with a mix of psychedelic, funk, and pop. The album shows that Coldplay

Bringing to life an era that still intrigues the world, Abdulaziz Al-Mahmoud’s deep and dedicated research into a time that is so significant for the world’s history, definitely pays off in The Holy Sail which brings to life love, honour and nobility as well as taking readers into the medieval world of Lisbon, Cairo, Jeddah and Istanbul. Oblivious to the invasions, massacres and religious fanaticism that characterise the 15th century, a young girl falls in love with a noble Arabian tribal leader. But all eyes are on the Portuguese fleets in the Arabian Gulf, intent on securing the profitable spice trade. The Holy Sail brings to life a neglected episode of history that impacted the world.

the band is taking a risk, but props to them for exploring new sonic possibilities with each new era. So, there’s a good chance that we’ll be hearing more danceable tracks and a much happier album!

CITY RIDES

FACT TAKES A DRIVE IN THE SUCCESSOR TO THE GALLARDO – THE NEW LAMBORGHINI V10 OFFERING, THE MIGHTY HURACÁN LP 610-4.

L

amborghini like to keep things simple with their product range, offering two base models in the line up at any given time, one boasting a naturally-aspirated V12 engine, and one a naturallyaspirated V10, with several editions derived from each one during the course of its life. The Lamborghini Huracán, named after a famous Spanish fighting bull in keeping with Lamborghini tradition, replaces the outgoing Gallardo as the marque’s V10 offering. As a result, it obviously has to up the game over its predecessor. Therefore, Lamborghini have made quite a few changes to the exterior, interior and performance figures. The Huracán still features the same 5.2l V10 as the Gallardo, but this time round it has been uprated to produce 610PS (602hp) to the Gallardo’s 560PS (552hp). This means a 0-100km/h time of 3.2 seconds, and a top speed of 325km/h. It also features a raft of new technology, such as Stop & Start fuel saving, and MagneRide electromagnetic damper control. Inside, the Italian sense of drama comes courtesy of the 3-mode switch on the steering wheel for Strada (Street), Sport, and Corsa (Track), and the bright red fighter jet-style cover over the ignition, which you’ll have to flip up to fire up that big V10. It all just appeals to the man-child inside! We collected the car from the Lamborghini showroom in Deira, and familiarised ourselves with the car’s immense power, blistering speed and unforgettable V10 bellow on the long drive home to Abu Dhabi. We were somewhat nervous about navigating Deira’s extremely busy streets in a Lamborghini, but needn’t have been. Despite being a V10 supercar, the Huracán is manageable and easy to manoeuvre, and feels positively sedate at low speeds in Strada mode. Some rear visibility is obviously sacrificed to that low seating position and the mid-engine layout that places the big V10 right behind you, but it’s a small price to pay for such a rousing symphony The Huracán is just as comfortable cruising on a highway as it is on city streets with a smooth ride in Strada mode. 112 fact magazine

CITY RIDES

THE HURACÁN BOASTS A HIGHLY INTELLIGENT ALL-WHEEL-DRIVE TRANSMISSION WITH A 70/30 FRONT-REAR TORQUE RATIO, BUT CAN SEND 100% OF THE POWER TO THE REAR AND 50% TO THE FRONT DEPENDING ON REQUIREMENTS. Cruise control is optional in the Huracán, but unfortunately our model didn’t have that option, so the biggest challenge was avoiding a speeding ticket. 114 fact magazine

However, a highway isn’t where you want to be in a Lamborghini, so the next day we went to find a more challenging route for some entertainment. Switching to Sport mode tightens up the car overall, opening up the exhaust for a more aggressive note and more power, improving throttle and steering response, and stiffening the chassis for better grip. The Huracán boasts a highly intelligent all-wheel-drive transmission with a 70/30 front-rear torque ratio, but can send 100% of the power to the rear and 50% to the front depending on requirements. It works together with the Pattaforma Inerziale, which is an array of motion sensors that adjust the ESP and gearbox to suit driving conditions. It’s a marked difference over the Gallardo, and results in a car that makes the immense power of the car’s 602hp V10 very manageable, and insane amounts of fun to drive! Overall, the Huracán is absolutely superb, offering Italian supercar exotica and performance figures in a highly usable package. We’re completely sold!

PLUGGED-IN

THE HUAWEI Honor 7 VERDICT: Overall, we found the experience of the Honor 7 a positive one. While we’ve not been tempted to give up our Galaxy S6 by any means, in terms of value for money the Honor 7 is extremely tough to beat – a presentable smartphone with clever features and some great innovations, albeit with a sometimesimperfect delivery.

The Honor 7 was launched in the Gulf last month in Dubai with much fanfare and a direct appeal to “the youth,” including parkour shows, a guest appearance from a daredevil stuntman, and an extensive product presentation. However, does it live up to the hype?

HONOR IS THE PREMIUM sub-brand of Chinese electronics manufacturer Huawei that has enjoyed considerable success by offering premium-level features at lower prices than its Android competitors. However, that isn’t the entire story, because the Honor 7 also boasts a raft of innovative new features that really set it apart in the market. Combine this with a very competitive price tag, and you have a serious contender in the Great Smartphone Race! Let’s start off with first impressions. Visually, the Honor 7 doesn’t impress. While it’s not a bad-looking phone, in relation to very good-looking recent releases like the Samsung Galaxy S6, it’s left wanting. However, a nice hefty feel from the brushed-aluminium case does redeem it somewhat. However, in terms of horsepower, the Honor 7 does impress, with an octa-core processor, a choice between 16GB and 64GB of storage, and 3GB of RAM. As a result, the operations of all the apps we tried were smooth and seamless, with only the occasional pause in loading certain things. The camera also impresses, with a 20MP rear-facing camera, and an 8MP front facing one, both of which take 118 fact magazine

very decent images with plenty of detail. There are also some good image editing apps that make things even better. On the back of the phone is the biometric fingerprint scanner. Just below the camera lens, you press your finger to the scanner, which makes for really easy use with one hand – bonus! It’s also supposed to be able to scan your finger from any direction, although this is a bit hit and miss. It doesn’t always work first time, and sometimes requires multiple tries to unlock the phone. The Honor 7 runs on Android 5.0 Lollipop, but with extra features courtesy of Huawei’s Emotion UI on

top, which adds things like the knuckle tap and drag to perform screen capture and selecting certain parts of the screen, and the button on the side, that can be easily programmed to access favourite apps like Facebook or Whatsapp. It works smoothly and the graphics are crisp, so anyone who is a fan of Android will be more than happy with it. Voice Activation is also a big feature of the Honor 7. On setting up the phone you have to repeat the phrase “Dear Honor” three times, and it will learn your voice. You can then use it to wake up the phone when it’s in standby, or find it if you’ve misplaced it. For example, saying “Dear Honor, where are you?” will make it play a tune, vibrate, light up the camera flash and say “I’m here” until you find it, which could prove handy. However, we found the command “Dear Honor” a bit corny, and didn’t particularly want to have to walk around saying it. Thankfully, different custom commands can also be entered!

In fact it’s sometimes harrowing, but it draws you in like a black hole! At just over six dollars it’s one of the more expensive apps out there, but in terms of game depth, playability and immersiveness, it is well worth the money.

This highly customisable app is all your need for podcast managing and playing. CHEF’S TABLE

IT JUST WON THE TITLE OF BEST NEWCOMER IN BAHRAIN AT THE CITI FACT DINING AWARDS, SO WHEN WE HEARD THAT MY CAFÉ WAS LAUNCHING A NEW A LA CARTE MENU; WE HAD TO MEET THE MAN BEHIND THE DELICIOUS FOOD, EXECUTIVE CHEF HERVE PRONZATO, FOR A SNEAK PEEK (AND TASTE) OF WHAT HE’S PLATING UP…

IF YOU’RE THE TYPE OF PERSON who, simply, loves great food and hanging out with family and friends in a welcoming and sociable environment, My Café should be right up your foodie alley. This boutique restaurant, serving gourmet-style food, has fast-become a lunchtime hotspot and an al fresco favourite since opening earlier this year. What appealed to us most about My Café is the concept and philosophy of the venue… “created by and for The Bon Vivant – the type of person who loves life, relishes food, enjoys being with others and thrives on art and culture. It was made for people who simply love food, to them (and us) food is happiness,” their website reads. What a fantastic outlook. Creative, original, and, most of all, all about celebrating good food – we were sold! The venue itself is fabulous, and we’re told that it is somewhat an extension of the owner’s home. It’s bright, airy, contemporary and comfortable, and natural light pours into every area from the many cleverly placed windows. The tasteful interiors spans two floors high as well as out through some conservatorystyle doors onto a secluded garden area, decked out in quality outdoor seating furniture like cosy cushions and large tables and chairs – we feel a world away from the Bahrain bustle! There’s even a substantial book-lined shelf which adds to that positive, creative and down-toearth setting that foodies crave so much. Chef Herve has only been in Bahrain for one month now, but he’s been busy with planning and launching a fabulous new A la Carte menu. He explains a little bit about the international fare served here. “The menu of My Café has Mediterranean and Eastern influences and I try to source as much local 146 fact magazine

ingredients as possible, and, of course, some things are imported, but always the freshest possible,” he says. Talking of fresh, out come our two starters; the Amberjack tiradito and the King fish Ceviche. The first is a beautifully flavourful dish due to a marinade of spicy Aji Amarillo – it’s incredibly tasty with a subtle spicy kick and we absolutely adore the crunch from the compressed sweet potato. The latter dish really shows the creative cooking by Chef Herve and his team. We love the use of peeled, slowroasted cherry tomatoes and the addition

of truffle oil. Again, the freshness and flavours are on point! Chef Herve’s culinary philosophy is “Always respect the true taste of your basic ingredient.” Staying true to his own words, Chef Herve sends out two fantastic main course dishes; the Roasted Hammour and the Prawn Salad. The first is served with wild fennel, baby marrow cream and slow roasted tomato. It tastes exquisite – perfectly crisp on the outside and deliciously tender inside. There’s a lovely sweet and tangy flavour that, pleasantly, lingers a while on your

CHEF’S TABLE

taste buds. The Prawn Salad had THE most vibrant and colourful presentation. Every component on the plate was super fresh, and we all agreed that the taste and textures really made this a fusion dish. There was a mouthwatering use of garlic, and a little Asian or Thai element from the nuts, mint and baby asparagus – amazing! Chef Herve started cooking at a young age with his grandmother and went onto culinary school. His professional career has seen him work all over the world including Paris, Turkey, China, Greece, Thailand, Malaysia and now Bahrain.

MENU Amberjack tiradito king fish Ceviche roasted Hammour prawn salad strawberry Cheescake Chocolate peanut Butter

The desserts are created by My Café’s extraordinary Pastry Chef, Jolyon D’Angibau. He prepares, for us, Strawberry Cheescake

with Rose ice cream and a Chocolate Peanut Butter dish. The rose ice cream has us all saying ‘wow!’ The second dessert was a winner too – completely indulgent and a huge treat for peanut butter lovers, like us! If you haven’t tried the food at My Café, you’re missing out! Though a little pricey, the quality is seriously impeccable and the venue will make you feel at home - totally worth it. he former Boulevard Lounge, located just around the corner from the hotel’s plush reception area, now takes the name of Café Venissa. The café is so steeped in history; it’s inspired by the famous Italian coffee shop, Caffe Florian, which was opened by Floriano Francesconi in 1720 – the oldest coffee house in Europe. The significance of this concept is the chic and elegant Italian décor, combined with mouthwatering creations – the perfect place for a spot of afternoon tea and chats. The moment you step into this charming space, you get a sense that you’re in the enchanting era of yesteryear’s Venice as you’re immersed in classical music and surrounded by the 18th century dramatic atmosphere in the form of artful details on the walls. And of course the legendary service is yet another nod to that time period of grace and elegance. The finesse of Café Venissa is unbeatable. Staying true to its historical legacy, the menu reflects a selection of the most irresistible items of the original coffee house. Starting off on a light note, we tucked into a leafy Insalata Venissa made up of shrimps, cucumber, bresaola, cherry tomatoes and buffalo mozzarella – a perfect way to break into the café’s offering, with a light crunch

Going into the deeper end of the menu, a classic was in order: the Club Sandwich Venissa. It does exactly what it says on the tin: it fills you up in just the right way, with layers of loaded flavour. You’ve got cheese, egg, radicchio (leaf chicory, mushroom cream (mmmh so smooth), smoked turkey, all packed between tomato bread. When spoilt for choice, pick a club, we say! VENUE REVIEW

e

nter Kontiki through the grand doors and you’ll be greeted by a stylish venue, reminiscent of a five-star beach restaurant on some faraway paradise island in Thailand or Bali, or an equally serene setting. Kontiki is a great-sized venue with tall ceilings and large tables and chairs, fit for anyone who is visiting for a foodie feast. The interiors boasts soft light and warm shades of red and brown with the roof and walls adorned in bamboo-style wood panels. In fact, the venue does have some Polynesian flair too. Here, guests can tuck into dishes from China, Thailand, Japan, Vietnam and the Pacific Islands. The bar serves expertly prepared drinks designed to accompany Asian cuisine. The menu has just the right amount of dishes with starters, salads, soups, vegetarian dishes, main course with curry and sizzling platters and a good selection of side dishes as well as yummy desserts (but, we’ll get to that later!). Begin your oriental feast with a selection of starters. We went for the Mixed Satay (grilled beef, prawn and chicken skewers, served with peanut sauce); Crispy duck Poh Piah served with silky peanut sauce; Samoan Crab Cake, served with mango and avocado relish and Kontiki tangy dips; and a plate of assorted sushi and sashimi. One thing that we all agree on, immediately, is that the portions are generous and the different sauces with each dish are perfectly paired to enhance flavours. The relish with the crab cakes is what made the dish so spectacular, and the peanut sauce with the satay was excellent. The sushi and sashimi was some of the freshest we’ve tried, and though we wished there was a little less duck filling in the rolls, the incredible crispiness made them our favourite starter. Next up was Warm Tuna Tataki, Soy Flavoured Ginger Salmon, Rack of Lamb “Tahiti Fashion” and Stir Fried Prawns. The tuna was exquisite and was made even tastier with the flavours of capers, beans, potatoes, and cherry tomatoes, all drizzled in lemon vinaigrette dressing. The standard fail-safe option of the salmon was livened up by the likes of pok choy and shitake, as well as a subtle ginger kick. The lamb chops remind us of a more Western cooking 154 fact magazine

technique, however, the mint, garlic and coriander crust, alongside the wasabi mash gives the dish a lovely, exotic twist. The prawns were simply divine – packed with flavour and the right amount of zing from the onion and garlic – a definite must-try! For dessert we went for a mix of modern and oriental. The Chocolate Fondant with vanilla ice cream was heavenly. The cake was soft and spongy in the middle and we polished off the plate in blissful silence! The Sesame Crusted Mango Spring Rolls, though a little heavy, are an absolute delight in terms of flavours and textures, making for a flawless finish to our meal. Kontiki offers good food in a beautiful setting with five-star service, right in the heart of Manama. As a foodie, what more could you ask for?

“WE’RE TOLD THAT THE AIM OF THE RENOVATION WAS TO PUT A MORE FEMININE FEEL TO THE PLACE, VIA ITS COLOUR SCHEME (DEEP PINKS, CORALS AND LIGHT REDS) AND SOPHISTICATED SEATING...”

S

aar’s Najibi Centre has always been the heartbeat of expat life. Whether on a Sunday morning or Thursday afternoon, there’s always a convivial buzz in and around Al Osra supermarket, where you’d be hard pressed to not bump into someone you know! And one of the main reasons for that is Delilah’s, opposite the popular supermarket. Formerly the Great Deli Café, the new bistro style “is not just a café” says Spanish Chef Juan Gomez, it’s a “destination place rather than a convenience place,” he tells us. What used to be an open and clinical space has been transformed into a friendly, elegant and Provence inspired set up, with much more privacy courtesy of the various little nooks and corners available for customers, the French style windows and princely pillars punctuated in the small but roomy arrangement. We’re told that the aim of the renovation was to put a more feminine feel to the place, via its colour scheme (deep pinks, corals and light reds) and sophisticated seating – the calligraphic ‘D’ from the logo is etched into the backs of every seat – a really authentic touch. Walk into Delilah’s and you’ll be surrounded by animated chatter. It’s THE go-to place for a morning coffee but better still, a proper sit-down.

FOODIE CORNER

Our Recommendations The menu brims with crowd-pleasing dishes. Their all-day breakfast offering has all the hallmarks of a hearty feast. First up, the Eggs Benedict. The creamy hollandaise sauce and part crispy, part soft bread bun underneath the poached egg was a superb mouthful with so many flavourful layers. That runny yolk is something else – the best part of the experience. And for ladies who lunch you’ve got to try their Australian Angus Beef Rib Eye Organic Salad. Packed with tender slices of beef on a bed of fresh spinach, dressed with their signature Pomme vinaigrette cucumber, soya sprouts and fresh green apple julienne. The beef was top quality, easy to chew and balanced nicely with the tang of the apple strips. It’s light enough to keep energy levels up and filling enough to not feel hungry right after. Up next were some more signature dishes: Slow Roasted Lamb Shank served with mashed potatoes and gravy. With the change in weather, this is a sure-fire dish to keep cosy and warm. We could cut into the

lamb with no issue; it was tender and not stringy like lamb tends to be. The mashed potato was smooth and stodgy – just the way you like it. Adding a Middle Eastern element to it, Chef Gomez adds: “there’s a real lemony coriander zest to it.” Now we love risotto as much as the next person and Delilah’s Roasted Pumpkin and Truffle Risotto is heaven in a deep bowl. Creamy Arborio rice cooked with roasted pumpkin, diced zucchini and black truffle essence, crowned with shavings of Parmesan, this dish has a luxurious taste and a fusion of light and dense flavours. As for desserts, Delilah’s is on trend with their gluten-free options. We got a glutenfree (made with rice flour) brownie which, for any chocolate enthusiast, is basically a golden treat. The super fun and stylishly dressed staff warmed it up and all that gooey goodness flowed out after we cut into it. It’s the perfect, guilt-free, way to end a meal, we say. Family First for the Festivities

and I’m not quite sure how I feel about that. I know it’s supposed to be a time of festivity and fun, but with my family 12,102 kilometres away, and zero chance of getting home to spend the day with them, I definitely have mixed feelings about welcoming in the festive season this year. You see, my grandfather died last week. And sometimes it takes something like the death of someone really special in your life, to a make you realise how important it is to spend as much time as you can with those you love. And for a long-term expat like myself, this realisation can hit you hard. Particularly during times that traditionally bring families together. I’ve always enjoyed spending Christmas in Bahrain, and I love that it’s been embraced by so many who wouldn’t normally celebrate it. Gift-giving, decadent dinners and decorations abound. In fact I almost got lost in a jungle of Christmas trees while wandering around in a large suburban hardware store last week. But Christmas is so much more than just Santa hats and plastic trees. And for me this year, knowing that there’ll be one less setting at the Christmas table, and one less present under the tree, all those 12,102 kilometres away, Christmas just won’t be the same.
