Glamour at Gatsby EVERY GIRL NEEDS SOME ME-TIME AND PAMPERING NOW AND AGAIN, RIGHT? THERE’S A NEW PL ACE IN TOWN THAT’S READY TO TAKE CARE OF ALL YOUR BEAUT Y SERVICES. ENTER GATSBY BEAUT Y LOUNGE AT THE WALK, RIFFA…

UNLIKE MANY OTHER FRANCHISED NAMES, Gatsby Beauty Lounge is the love affair of one Bahrain-based mama who has a passion for providing ladies with the best in beauty care. From hair to nails, face and body treatments, Gatsby has it all and you’ll need a whole afternoon to really experience its offerings – festive treat anyone? We went along for a haircut, mani-pedi, massage and threading – all professional services made to help you wind down and relax. Gatsby Beauty Lounge is the first Med Beauty Spa in the Kingdom of Bahrain and it provides all aesthetic enhancement including Body Contouring and Skin Rejuvenation, Laser Hair Removal and Hair and Beauty services. There’s a whole side dedicated to being a luxury nail salon with all certified staff. On our visit, it’s the friendliness of the staff and the efficiency of the services that really stand out. One chat with the hairdresser and she gets to work; what is really awesome is that unlike many other places we’ve visited, this lady actually LISTENS to what you want and does just that. And we all know how hard it is to find a good hairdresser – Gatsby has just introduced us to ours! Moving onto the massage, the room is beautiful and the therapist really knows her stuff. The pressure is just right and the knots in the back (a result of everyday stress) were worked out with deep strokes for total relaxation. One small downfall is that you still get a tiny bit of noise from the other side of the door – but is it enough to stop you from enjoying the massage? Definitely not! 8

fact magazine

Next up were the nails. In particular, it’s the pedicure that has us in total bliss. The therapist rids our soles of dead skin, followed by a mini scrub and lotion, all whilst cleaning, shaping and polishing the nails to leave you with envious tootsies. For the manicure, we chose a neutral shade which was applied meticulously once the nails had been groomed – our hands felt fresher and lighter than when we’d walked in. To finish off, the face threading – a service that can in some instances be very painful if done without the right skill and expertise. However, at Gatsby, threading was fast and precise with the aid of rose water to cool the skin afterwards. You’ll be offered a plate of yummy biscuits and a choice of hot or cold beverage during your time there – a gesture that really made us feel at home! And when you’re not eyes closed and cosy, you can admire the beautiful 1920’s inspired décor with glitzy chandeliers, funky mirrors, black and white tiling and a party-esque interior that will make you feel enveloped in pure luxury from start to finish. Ladies, it’s time to book your next day of indulgence and Gatsby Beauty Lounge is ready to welcome you! ✤

SHAKE SHACK STRIKES AGAIN Straight from NYC to Bahrain’s newest shopping destination! Take a peek into the world of burgers at the new Shake Shack store at The Avenues - Bahrain, the brand’s second outlet in the country. Inspired by Shake Shack’s desire to incorporate the essence of the local community and culture into the store, the new venue depicts an artistically playful take on the location, heritage, sights and sounds of Bahrain. The newly opened Shack highlights the first collaboration of its kind in the Middle East, featuring creations from regionallybased artists from The Art Painting Lab - Melvin San Miguel, Sam Saliba and Max Laurence. Adding a new dimension to the look and feel of the Shack, these artworks portray Bahrain’s modern day society alongside surreal images of food, brought to life in vivid and abstract colours. The new location also features touches of rustic wood in the architecture to tie in with the traditional side of Bahrain. Inspired by the clean lines of modern Manama and The Avenues – Bahrain, the new restaurant has string lighting across high ceilings, as well as local Arabic lamps for a traditional touch. ✤

Being a pioneering country in the field of visual arts, Bahraini women were no strangers to this field, marking successes locally, regionally and internationally. In this exhibition, the works show the diversity of styles and concepts and also shows the evolvement of the artists’ works.

TOP 3: CULTURAL HAPPENINGS Check out our pick of the best events and activities organised and hosted by the Bahrain Authority for Culture & Antiquities. The Stamp Seal: Hallmark of Dilmun and its Hidden Art DATE: ONGOING - 20 SEPTEMBER 2018 TIME: 8AM - 8PM VENUE: BAHRAIN NATIONAL MUSEUM GENRE: EXHIBITION Seals were a main administrative tool used to regulate trade and organise society. Hardly bigger than few centimetres, they were used on official documents, tags attached to goods and on buildings gates to certify authenticity and ownership. In addition to their main administrative function, the seals might have had some metaphysical connotations. With a shape and iconography unusual to the Near East, the Dilmun seals illustrate more than any other category of artefacts, the most original material representation of the Dilmun culture and its only surviving art. 'The Stamp Seals: Hallmark of Dilmun and its Hidden Art’ draws on the permanent collection of the Bahrain National Museum and some highlights from the National Museum of Kuwait. The display illustrates an exceptional selection of seals spanning the 3rd and 2nd millennia BCE and examines the use, techniques, diversity and splendour of the Dilmun seals. 12

or those of you who had the pleasure of visiting Areej Rajab;s latest art exhibition: Limitless, there’s no doubt that you’ll have left feeling a little lighter and brighter. Stating her one core artistic inspiration as, simply, “colour”, Areej’s latest body of work is a testament to her unobtrusive approach with a candid look at how the subtleties of her surroundings inspire her. Unlike many of her peers, Areej stands out in the world of art for her unapologetic boldness; she is unusually and quite utterly, unbound by the forces of genre and style. And, to put it quite simply and quite uncompromisingly, it is emotion that drives her hand. “My work comes from emotion,” Areej tells us. “I use colour as my primary means of expressing that. To me each colour has a unique character and I feel as if emotion flows through me as I apply these colours to my canvas,” she adds. For Areej, the job of art is to inspire, not to imply. Her audience is her meaning maker and her work is characterised by 60

dynamic brush strokes, shifting planes of colour and pulsating forms. This is also the reason why her pieces remain untitled – because every person has the will and freedom to form their own significance from each of her paintings. Being a mixed media artist, Areej enjoys using all sorts of mediums and material like oils, inks, acrylics, and pastels to master the balance of movement, space and colour. Her paintings are a window into the mind of an artist who has sought order in a chaotic world, she somehow manages to find pattern in the abstract works she creates. “I create my own unique textures which contain an almost three dimensionality,” Areej explains. “These textures create visual patterns through conveyed shadows and depth which invites viewers to explore each piece much more closely.” It’s no surprises that Areej has a deep connection with art, and especially with painting. She was exposed to this medium at a very young age and recalls watching with wonder as her aunt, the traditional Islamic water-colourist Sameeha Rajab, worked away at the canvas.

• ARTS INTERVIEW

At three-years-old, with her aunt as both inspiration and tutor, Areej began to learn about colour, materials, techniques and application. Whilst growing up, her obsession with colour and painting grew stronger. “I realised that I wanted to take it a step further so I started spending long hours studying, practicing and reading about different art aspects,” she says. “At first I was self taught, but then I pursued this passion by taking up two degrees from London Art College. One in painting and the other one in Art History.” Through her latest collection “Limitless” – Areej tried to convey that obejects are not solids, and that they don’t end where we think they do. “I also explore the subtle character of colour as well as the fleeting nature of light,” she shares. “Ultimately, the work should challenge our preconceptions of colour itself and Limitless offers both an advancement and refinement of my work to date.” With a mix of pieces – some paintings that are intoxicatingly stained and layered, reworked over and over several visits to the same canvas – and others that see Areej return to a more suggestive style with paintings that bring about a feeling of surveying something, through a particularly hazy, soft-focus lens. Bahrain born-and-raised, Areej is proud of her home country’s dedication to art. “Bahrain is unquestionably one of the most promising, passionate cultural hubs of the Middle East,” she says. “Its 62

flourishing art scene has affored the island an enviable reputation as one of the region's most prolific creative voices and we have a community of artists that are at the forefront of this development.” Areej’s advise for young budding artists is to spend continuous hours in their studios as it’s the only way to develop a focused line of work, and to be original and creative! Stand before this artist’s work and everything you think you need to know about an artwork will melt away. All of a sudden your drive to imply structure and genre will seem like an unnecessary distraction from the sight of these pure, beautiful works. It’s unequivocally right to say that Areej Rajab is an artist who began a love affair with colour in childhood and, as an adult, this passion shows no signs of waning. ✤

Everyday Is Christmas

The Architect

By Sia

Your Christmas playlist just got a whole lot more festive; thanks to Sia’s first-ever holiday album! The follow-up to her 2016 album This Is Acting and her first album for Atlantic Records, Everyday Is Christmas features original holiday-themed songs composed with help from Greg Kurstin. Adding to this year’s crop of festive soundtracks, Sia aims to stand out with quirky and fun originals including Ho Ho Ho and Puppies Are Forever. Singing about the joys of Christmastime, Santa’s Coming for Us is the only Christmas jingle we need this season. Featuring sleigh bells and a jazzy guitar riff, Sia’s vocals truly shine through and lack a tinge of the usual darkness witnessed in her previous songs. Sia’s updated spin on old school songs comes as a breath of fresh air for a traditional genre like Christmas ballads. In stark contrast to the songstress’ anthemic pop hits, the new soundtrack is much more upbeat and playful and we are totally on board!

The process of having a productive conversation has certainly taken a backseat. We Need to Talk is all about bringing back to life the lost art of conversation. Headlee shares why it’s important to have effective and respectful conversations and also to listen for better relationships and growth opportunities. Lots to learn here!

By Paloma Faith Since making her mainstream debut with her theatrical image and retrosoul sound, Paloma Faith has been a permanent fixture on our playlists as well as our hearts. Steering away from the tried and tested course of love, Paloma’s fourth studio album is all about the socio-political world of our times. Showcasing a melodious marriage of the old with the new, The Architect is a social observation record from the perspective of the common people. Sticking close to the sound we’re used to, Crybaby is a super catchy and upbeat track, with more subdued and breezy vocals and vulnerable lyrics featuring a funky rhythm with a touch of disco. A dramatic and vivacious track showcasing Paloma’s deep and soulful vocals, Guilty exhibits a faultless chorus with a political edge. Delivering a mix of larger than life heartfelt ballads, The Architect has all the makings of a masterpiece.

acting Operations Manager within a year. I came in to Middles East as Director of Operations and moved as a Resident Manager to Intercontinental Doha before moving to Bahrain as the General Manager. The experience gained over the years in handling different operational aspects has helped me look at challenges and day to day operations with a different eye. In a hotel of this calibre where standards have to be high, how do you keep yourself challenged and continuously ahead in the hospitality game? Well, being in the industry for so many years it is automatically ingrained in our system to be the best in everything you do. It also helps in being part of a global chain that sets its standards very high which keeps you on top of your game. Especially in the hospitality industry, you have no choice but to be always about 10 steps ahead of your guests. I set my standards high but realistic. I know and understand the strengths and inspirations of my team well and set my targets accordingly.

NEW BEGINNINGS FACT caught up with Gilles Nicolas, General Manager at the Crowne Plaza Bahrain, to talk new hotel plans, the Crowne Plaza brand and just what it takes to be a successful GM…

Hi Nicolas! Being the General Manager of a 5-star hotel is a huge role. Tell us more about your experience over the years that have helped you prepare for this job? I have 20 years’ experience in the hospitality industry, having worked across six different countries in three continents with a degree in hotel management from a Hospitality School in Paris and a MBA from the University of Liverpool. I started my career with IHG at the Holiday Inn London Regent’s Park in England as Food and Beverage Manager and moved to 68

Who would you say is the clientele of the Crowne Plaza Bahrain – describe the person who walks in through the hotel doors… That’s an easy one, we predominantly cater to corporate clients. Globally we are positioned to cater to the modern business traveller. Hence, the Crowne Plaza brand has its unique hallmarks like sleep advantage and Crowne Meetings manager. Our brand hallmarks differentiate us from the competition and ensure a consistent guest experience from property to property. The Crowne Plaza brand focuses on the needs of people who are on their way up and see business travel as an essential part of advancing their careers. The Crowne Plaza brand is the only choice that helps guests be successful by Empowering Business Productivity. For our guests, travel is not the goal, success is the goal—and their success is our success. Through our research, they’ve told us to: “Provide me with an environment where I am able to work productively, get things done, perform at my best and achieve my goals.” The responsibilities of General Manager could get overwhelming at times. How do you manage your time, expectations and the need for attention to detail? Actually it more so on maintaining relationships than running the hotel itself. It is ensuring that you maintain a good balance between managing the owners, the corporate office and the hotel team. But I am lucky to have a great team that helps run the hotel very efficiently so that I can focus on managing relationships that have impact on our business. Tell us some of your goals with the hotel – things you want to make a mark with over the next year… My dream is for Crowne Plaza Bahrain to become the best and busiest conference center in the island and achieve our “Magic number” target. We are ideally placed to facilitate MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions) and have a 1,200 square meter ballroom which, subject to the clients’ needs, can be divided into smaller units.

Are you the type of GM who does things from his office, or is your working style more interactive where you walk around the hotel often? Oh I love walking around, can’t you tell from looking at me?? Jokes apart I enjoy walking around as it gives me the opportunity to interact with both guests and my team. It also gives them an opportunity to address challenges on the spot and be able to resolve them immediately. But I must be honest and admit that certain days I do spend too much time in the office. Can you tell us more about any changes and new innovations that are coming up at Crowne Plaza Bahrain? One of the key highlights of this year is that we are on a full renovation in some of our rooms in the hotel. The hotel’s goal is to excel at exceeding our guests’ expectations and deliver a truly differentiated brand experience. The renovation project started in June 2017 and is progressing quite well and will include a refreshed new look for 138 number of

rooms with “new modern” design style. I am, in particular, quite excited about the Club lounge in the lobby as it is a brand new addition to the hotel and it will definitely bring a sense of personality, quality and energy to the space with its modern lines and state-of the art amenities. It will also give our club members their special benefits that they truly deserve. Tell us three goals you want to fulfil both professionally and personally in 2018… • Achieve the “Magic Number” • Successful opening of the new rooms and club lounge • Keep increasing our market share •Maintain best possible work life balance ✤

MARKETING MAESTRO It’s no secret that every brand’s strengths lie in its people – and a little bit of good promotion, of course! The same goes for the 5-star beauty that is the Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay, where Eslam Fouad brings knowledge, expertise and passion to an important role for this hospitality giant. With the best team, the right tools and all the support available to grow the business, this newly-appointed Director of Marketing has over a decade of experience under his belt. FACT sat down with the man of the moment to discuss hotel potential, his love for Bahrain and what makes the Four Seasons a company that really cares for its people…

Hi Eslam! Congratulations on your new role as Director of Marketing at the Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay. Let’s get straight to it – how many more responsibilities are you going to have now? Definitely much more! I joined the hotel as part of the preopening team in May 2014 as the Director of Sales, so I’ve been taking care of one department. Now, I have to take care of four departments. It’s a different scope of work – before I was taking care of the sales and going out to sell the rooms, and now the main focus will be about marketing and the positioning of the hotel – taking the hotel to the next level. The guys have been doing a great job and I was a part of it, 70

fact magazine

so I’m really happy with what we’ve achieved in the hotel. But, we definitely need to keep improving and moving forwards – there is always an area to improve and that’s what I’m looking forward to at the moment. You’re quoted as saying “It’s not about sealing the deal, it’s about crafting the experience” – this is quite a refreshing attitude to the sales and marketing world in hospitality. Can you tell us more about your approach to this role in a luxury 5-star hotel? Staying in a hotel is not only about checking in, coming to your room and then leaving. It’s all about experience and the memories you will go away with. Our job is to make sure that the guest has the best experience ever. When you ask about luxury, for many people it’s about the fancy product, the fancy room, the fancy glass and bathroom amenities – but, for us, luxury is all about personalised experience. So, how the guest will interact with the employees and what are their first impressions? Maybe their journey starts at check in, and sometimes it might start at the sales department – so how is the sales team’s response, how is their efficiency and are they accommodating and understanding of the guests’ needs to provide the experience that each guest is expecting? Every person coming to stay has a different purpose; whether it’s business, leisure, celebrating an anniversary or coming to have an important meeting – each experience should be tailored to fit individual requirements. That, for me, is the right approach from sales to marketing in our luxury hotel. Tell us three qualities that are needed for your new role? Vision: you have to have vision for the hotel, and where you want it to go – where you want it to be positioned. Leadership: I’m blessed to work with such a great team, and making sure that this team is happy and performing at their best and getting the support they need, is another quality you need to fulfill. Passion: the passion of the product, the people and of the country, it’s another amazing quality that really helps in this role.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW •

How do you plan to grow and sustain the success of the Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay? This property for me has a special place in my heart. I feel like I belong to it and it belongs to me. I’m so proud of the product and for 2018 we’ve got some exciting constructions in the pipeline which will add a new dimension to our guests’ stay at the hotel – all will be revealed soon! We’ve also got the shopping mall, The Avenues, just across the hotel which adds an amazing experience for our guests. We are working now on the water taxi so our guests don’t have to drive around to the mall but instead can float on over there from our jetty and return by boat when they’re done shopping and enjoying themselves. The leisure business from Europe and from Russia is another area that we’d like to tap into. The government is putting a lot of effort into that and we as a hotel, along with others, are doing our best in promoting Bahrain. So, 2018 will have a great focus on increasing the leisure business in light of what Bahrain has to offer. In an industry that remains ever-so unpredictable, how do you prepare and deal with unexpected challenges? We had a discussion earlier this year about the challenges that come around – whether it’s financial or anything else. The best answer is – there are things in your control and things out of your control. So, what you must focus on when facing every challenge is the things that are in your control, doing what you can do, and doing it to the best of your ability. Making sure that you deliver the service and experience that every and each individual is looking for, is the best thing to focus on. We’ve seen countries that have suffered a lot but managed to pick up and come back. The reason for this is the people who love that country, who’ve visited before – they will keep coming back again for the experiences. We have to keep doing our best in delivering the things that we promise.

Making sure that you deliver the service and experience that every and each individual is looking for, is the best thing to focus on. You’ve been doing the grind for over a decade now, what keeps you excited and motivated about working in hospitality? Coming from a sales background, definitely it’s the achievement and the sense of accomplishment that is the biggest motivation. Again, it’s not always about achieving numbers, but achieving the satisfaction that guests who come to the Four Seasons are looking for. When the guest leaves with a smile and happiness from having a memorable stay – this is a

great achievement for us. So it’s a balance of making sure that the guest is given the best experience and at the same time making sure that the hotel is performing well, financially, as is desired. So, achievement is definitely the main drive. Personally, what is it about the Four Seasons brand that has kept you around and loyal to it for so long? The day when you step into this company, you learn the golden rule “treat others how you wish to be treated” – how I’ve been treated as an employee over the last 11 years, how I’ve been taken care of by the management and my colleagues, and the amount of respect that you see around, along with the transparency that you see in the company, it’s really unique. I’ve worked in other industries, other hotel companies, and I assure you that the difference is there. It’s a company that really believes in its people and their development and growth. Plus, there is a genuine satisfaction when you work for a brand like the Four Seasons, which is recognised worldwide. Not only for me, but even for my family; my wife is so proud that I work for the Four Seasons. It’s a great company to be a part of and the empowerment you get is also a very positive aspect. What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned in your career? I’ve learned so many lessons but the biggest has to be the commitment. Whether you commit to quality, or consistency, to the brand, and to its success, once you’ve committed to deliver to the guest and meet their expectations, then it’s likely that they will leave satisfied and happy. So, commitment for me is the biggest lesson learned. What are some of your predictions for the hospitality industry in Bahrain, for 2018… On the country level – there’s a lot of potential. When you get to Bahrain, you feel such positive energy. The location is amazing and the weather is great – the people of Bahrain are the country’s best asset. Our goal is to introduce Bahrain to the rest of the world. Bahrain has been very successful on regional tourism – we have a lot of visitors from the GCC. However, Bahrain has a lot of potential for going beyond that and targeting other markets. For example, this year we had our first destination wedding on a large scale – it was a beautiful experience for everyone and a good start to tapping into this side of business. We also had FAM Trips from Germany, UK, China, India and many other places. These people came to see the country and left with great experiences and stories – they are the representatives for Bahrain now. I’m sure that 2018 will see harvest on all those efforts and should be a positive year for the country. ✤

Kia Motors demand attention with their latest offering, solidifying themselves as contenders in the premium sedan segment.

A

lthough it may seem like Kia Motors have only been around for a relatively short period of time, in truth, the South Korean based automobile manufacturers have been producing cars since 1973. Their offerings may have begun as simple, safe and value packed vehicles, however they have advanced their creations to a standard that can comfortably compete with other premium sedans in their segment. The all-new 2018 Kia Stinger is a prime example of just how far Kia’s ingenuity and style have evolved. Designed in Frankfurt and developed on the Nürburgring, the precision German influence on the Stinger is obvious in both appearance and performance. This GT 4 Dr Sedan with a lift back feature claims to have high performance abilities on the road and comes complete with extraordinary safety features. With all that in mind, we at fact were most excited to see what

this new brand of automobile had to offer. Upon our initial outer body inspection, it was immediately obvious this car’s design is performance orientated and out right stylish. From front on, the corporate Kia tiger nose grille demands attention as its broad shoulders hint at the power hidden underneath its shapely hood. The design and positioning of the attractive LED headlights add to its authoritative appearance, whilst functional front vents not only contribute towards its sporty presence, but add value through the cooling of the breaks, forming an air curtain. Shifting our attention to the sides, the existence of further functional air vents confirmed the intentions of the designers to ensure this car is equipped for maximum performance. The sweeping lines of the body flow effortlessly from front to back highlighting the length of the vehicle. It is noticeably longer than its closest competitors such as the BMW 4 Series and Audi A5. The Stinger comes with 18” wheels complete with Brembo dual calliper disc brakes, providing both safety and control. The rear boasts an integrated spoiler, adding to the sportiness of the car and we were most impressed by the design of the quad outlet exhaust system. Slipping inside the cabin revealed to us just how low the Stinger sits. It was immediately obvious the cabin is both driver focussed and stylish. The materials used all appeared to be high quality and expensive. GT badges embroidered in the headrests add a touch of class and it was obvious the imminent drive was to be a comfortable one. The layout is one of functionality and convenience, with everything seeming to sit exactly where it is most accessible. There is enough storage space to satisfy everyday requirements and cup holders are present for your convenience. The infotainment system is not overly complicated and we had no problem navigating through its features which include a simple backup camera and parking assist. Due to the extra length of the vehicle, there is ample leg room in the back for three adults to sit comfortably. The boot offers 23 cubic feet of space, expanding to 40 cubic feet when the back seats are laid down. fact magazine

“THE 8-SPEED STEPTRONIC GEARBOX PERFORMED ITS DUTIES PERFECTLY, SEEMLESSLY FLOWING THROUGH

But how does she drive? As we pulled out of the parking area onto the tarmac, it was immediately obvious we were in for a treat. The meaty sounding 3.3-liter twin-turbo V6 Lambda II engine was begging to be set free, promising a ride of wonders if we would only press down on the accelerator. The steering wheel felt perfect as we began to unleash the Stinger‘s 356 horsepower on the tarmac. Our bodies were pinned to the seats which seemed to hug us in a comforting embrace as we tested the ability of the car to go from 0 -100 kph in just 4.9 seconds. It was not a flase boast as we quickly found ourselves tapping at the breaks to reduce our speed. The autonomous breaking system proved very responsive and gave us the assurance of complete control over the experience. The 8-speed Steptronic Gearbox performed its duties perfectly, seemlessly flowing through the gears. The handling felt precise and the grip on offer was ample to ensure a smooth and exciting drive. By the time we arrived back at Bin Hindi Motors, we had no doubt Kia are now solid competitors in the premium sedan market and are set to surprise many avid car enthusiast looking for a novel driving experience. ✤

Italian Indulgence Hot off its win as Favourite Fine-Dining Italian Restaurant at the 2017 Citi FACT Dining Awards, Fiamma at Sofitel Bahrain Zallaq Thalassa Sea & Spa is further upping its culinary game with a brand new Executive Sous Chef taking the reigns. • CHEF’S TABLE

Ingredients are the powerhouse of each and every dish,” says Chef Marco Terranova. “The quality of products used is the most important part of the cooking process.” Hailing from the alluring Mediterranean island of Sicily, Chef Marco incorporates his homeland’s vibrant culture and history into his effortless cooking. Immersed with culinary influences from all over the globe, he uses his Southern Italian roots to create his carefully curated foodie masterpieces. With over 16 years of extensive culinary experience under his belt, Chef Marco’s appointment as the new Executive Sous Chef at Sofitel Bahrain Zallaq Thalassa Sea & Spa’s beautiful Italian restaurant, Fiamma, was nothing short of a happy surprise. Overlooking the mesemerising Arabian Gulf, Fiamma has always been a go-to when in search of bona fide Italian cuisine in Bahrain. As soon as we stepped inside the trendy venue, we were immediately greeted by their super friendly staff and some really gorgeous views. Decked up in soothing tones of turquoise, beige and neutral shades, the restaurant offers a grand yet intimate ambience to dine and socialise. Offering guests an array of classic Italian delicacies including homemade pasta, cheesy pizzas freshly baked in a wood-fire oven as well as a selection of luscious desserts, Fiamma caters to your every whim and fancy. Delivering the freshest ingredients in an opulent environment, the restaurant is all about giving its diners the authentic Italian experience. We couldn’t wait to dig in! Our Italian culinary expedition began with a classic: Focaccia with Bresaola and Parmesan. flavour. Super light and fulfilling, we definitely couldn’t stop at just one piece! Inspired by Pellegrino Artusi’s culinary wisdom, Chef Marco believes in using only the finest and most authentic ingredients for his creations. Our next dish of Sicilian Stuffed Pizza with Feta Cheese, Pesto and Fresh Tomato truly reinforced that belief. Giving the good old traditional pizza a run for its money, this Sicilian speciality had us smitten from the very first bite. A medley of melt-in-yourmouth feta cheese, zesty pesto and juicy tomatoes enveloped in rustic artisan bread – it’s a fuss-free concoction that every carb-lover will devour, fast. A self-confessed lover of all things seafood, Chef Marco’s final dish of White Cod Fish with Beets and Potato Puree is the ultimate indulgence. Incredibly fresh and flavoursome, the straight from the sea Cod Fish is exceptionally tender and cooked to perfection, while the hearty assortment of vegetables truly make the dish a winning formula for the palate and the eye. An unparalleled combination of versatile ingredients, an arsenal of exquisite regional dishes as well as a whole lot of love is what makes the Italian food at Fiamma so AH-MAZING! The restaurant brings to the forefront everything that Italian cuisine has to offer and leaves your taste buds wanting for more. With Chef Marco’s aim of enhancing and expanding Fiamma’s culinary offerings in the near future, we can certainly expect some great new dishes coming our way. Drooling yet? We don’t blame you! ✤

For a lot of people this has been a year full of stress and surprises and most people can’t wait to see the back of it; so a little more alcohol and one or two extra mince pies will be a welcome break. Now saying that, it doesn’t mean you should go mad and throw away all the hard work you’ve put in throughout the year. Stop shouting “SCROOGE” as you can still have fun over the Christmas season without completely over indulging. Put a little more thought into what you’re going to eat. Nowadays you can find healthy versions of your favourite foods and if you’re eating out many more restaurants are offering vegan and vegetarian options. When you’re watching those Christmas movies, try healthy snacks like nuts, white corn chips with hummus or guacamole dips, date power balls, carrot and cucumber sticks; and don’t forget to drink plenty of water. Try and get as much exercise in as you possibly can before the Christmas period, the more intense the better. Now that the weather is much better get off the treadmill and go outside and walk or run. Join a class that does HITT training or one of the many boot camps that are now doing there sessions outside. After Christmas dinner go for a nice long walk with the family. Get your party clothes on and welcome the 2018 in style! Happy New Year Everyone. ✤

Christmas really is the most magical time. Last year I was lucky enough to spend it in a teeny-tiny town (population 160) in rural Germany, and experience a wonderfully traditional Christmas. And this year I’m super excited to be heading to the hustle and bustle of London. One of the things I’m really looking forward to is seeing the Christmas lights around the city. I hear that the ones on Regent Street are the most beautiful (stay tuned to my Insta Stories to catch them), but I’m also keen to see the sparklers on Oxford Street. This year they’re inspired by falling snowflakes, and feature 750,000 led light bulbs, so even if we don't have a white Christmas I’m sure these will be almost as pretty. I’m also pretty tickled about tucking into a big fat juicy turkey, with all the trimmings and boatloads of gravy and cranberry sauce. But before lunch, we’ll be breaking open the Christmas crackers, because in case you hadn’t noticed, turkey tastes even better when you’ve got a silly paper hat perched on top of your head. And of course, Christmas is special because of the company you keep, so I can’t wait to spend the day with my loved ones, including family and friends. Fingers and toes crossed that everyone behaves! Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. xx ✤

“Live in each season as it passes; breathe the air, drink the drink, taste the fruit, and resign yourself to the influences of each.” – Henry David Thoreau. There’s something truly magical about this time of the year. The majestic Christmas tree displays, decadent lattes to get you in the holiday spirit as well as the unbeatable sweater weather! With the season of warm sunshine and leather jackets well and truly upon us, it’s time to make the most of it before the “New Year New Me” grind comes back in full swing. A time of rest, peace, comfort eating and reflection, the colder weather also marks the opportunity to start from scratch all over again. Winters in our beloved archipelago may be relatively subtle and pleasant; the moderate dip in temperatures is still a good enough reason to rejoice. While snowmen and skiing may not be a part of the island’s winter package, there’s still a ton of winter fun to be had! When you’re done indulging in a lot of unapologetic binge eating and self-imposed hibernation, fill your days and evenings with a number of epic events, fine dining as well as some magnificent Christmas and New Year bashes. So, if the winter blues come knocking at your door, Bahrain’s vibrant culture and diverse food scene definitely have you sorted. Here’s hoping winter 2K17 is full of love, food and a whole lotta memories. See you next year! ✤
