At the FACT office, the proverbial mist and magic of the holiday season usually descends a month earlier as we prep the festive issue. Our cover story this month features local charities and social

FEEL THE BEAT Black Coffee, renowned Afro house superstar DJ and Drake collaborator, is coming to Bahrain.

G

et ready to dance the night away as Grammy Award-winning South African DJ and producer Black Coffee performs for the first time in the Kingdom. The electrifying event will take place on December 17 at Azul Beach Bahrain. Born Nkosinathi Maphumulo, in Durban, he grew up in Mthatha in the Eastern Cape. On the day of Nelson Mandela’s release from Robben Island, he was among the dozens of people that were run down by a taxi driver in a politically motivated attack, which led to him losing the use of his left arm. Not one to let that hold him back, Maphumulo focused his efforts heavily on music and moved back to Durban to study jazz. He dropped out before completing his course, but, along with two of his friends, became a backing singer for acclaimed folk blues guitarist, Madala Kunene, before going on to form the soul pop trio Shana. At the same time, he continued learning electronic music production and DJing with one hand. In 2003, he was accepted 12

fact magazine

into the Red Bull Music Academy, which jump-started his career. In 2005, Black Coffee released his selftitled debut album that paired smooth deep house music with gently swinging drums. Over the next decade, he released four more albums – Have Another One (2007), Home Brewed (2009), the epic three-disc Africa Rising (2012) and Pieces of Me (2015). Each showcasing his developing production style and musical sophistication. Over the last two decades, Black Coffee has established himself as one of the most prominent global names in electronic music, bringing his South African roots to the world stage, with a blend of heavily traditional African percussion and distinctively metropolitan techno, dubbed by many as ‘Afropolitan House’. In 2022, he won a Grammy Award for Best Dance/Electronic Album for Subconsciously (2021), and then went on to perform two incredible sets on Coachella’s Sahara stage. Most recently, Black Coffee executive produced Drake’s seventh studio album Honestly, Nevermind. In recent years, Bahrain has seen a rise in the number of top-class event venues, from the exhibition centre and amphitheatre to beachside spaces. Azul Beach Bahrain, where the Black Coffee concert will be hosted this month, is a popular hub for the island’s most happening events. Now that the weather has cooled down, it’s the ideal location to spend a weekend, unwinding at the cabanas or relaxing on the shores. A bar with spacious, shack-style seating is also available so you can elevate your beachside escapades with bites and drinks. Azul Beach Bahrain boasts beautiful views of the Kingdom’s skyline. During the day, the blue skies blend with the Arabian Sea, offering a breathtaking ambience and at night, star-lit skies and an illuminated skyline, along with a mood-lit bar, ensure the vibe remains the same – upbeat and fun! ✤

HOME AWAY FROM HOME Michelle D’costa, a former Bahrain resident, is set to release her debut novel in the New Year. The book is a tribute to migrants in the Gulf, who eventually must leave to go back to their homeland. It also highlights their dreams and struggles, with a closer look at the construction industry and the fragility of South Asian careers in the Middle East. Michelle says: “My novel, You Envy the Coutinhos and other migrants in the Middle East, pivots around the Coutinhos, a Mangalorean Catholic family who navigate their identity as migrants amidst uncertainty, anxiety and homesickness. Cousins back home envy them for their picture-perfect lives, and dream to migrate someday. “Set in the backdrop of India and Bahrain, through the lives of the Coutinhos and those around them, the novel probes issues of migration, identity and belonging over four decades.” Growing up on the island, Michelle’s poems found space in youth magazines. The books she borrowed from The Indian School’s library, where she studied, made her fall in love with stories and write her own. Winning writing contests spurred her on to pursue the craft seriously. Even though she’s self-taught and hasn’t 20

fact magazine

studied literature formally, Michelle has been published in more than 70 magazines. In 2021, she released a poetry chapbook, Gulf, and currently makes a living teaching creative writing, and editing in Mumbai, India. Speaking about her inspiration for the novel and why she chose the theme that she did, Michelle says: “In the books I read, I didn’t come across stories about South Asian migrants in the Middle East. I wanted to document what they experience in the Gulf.” You Envy the Coutinhos and other migrants in the Middle East will be published by Westland Books (Tranquebar) and will be available on Amazon and other platforms in the New Year. Gulf, published by Yavanika Press, can be found online too. Michelle is also working on a couple more manuscripts. ✤

As part of his Mathematics Tour, the English singer and songwriter will enthral audiences as he performs live at the Kingdom’s popular entertainment hub. In 2019, the Official Charts Company named him artist of the decade, with the most combined success in the UK album and singles charts in the 2010s. As of April 2022, Sheeran was the most followed artist on Spotify. The artist’s debut album Plus (+) topped the UK Album chart and his second, Multiply (x) topped charts around the world and even won Album of the Year at the 2015 Brit Awards. Divide (÷) appeared on the list of best-selling albums worldwide in 2017. It featured the hit single Shape of You and Castle on the Hill, which 22

broke records in a number of countries. The Mathematics Tour (written as +–=÷× Tour) is the artist’s fourth concert tour. The name is an amalgamation of Sheeran’s albums: + (Plus), x (Multiply), ÷ (Divide), = (Equals) and – (Subtract). However, it is promoting Equals (2021) and the more recent Subtract (2023). Prepare to be mesmerised as Sheeran makes his debut performance in Bahrain. Creating music since the age of 11, he released his seventh studio album Autumn Variations in September this year, through his own record label Gingerbread Man Records. W • ISLAND RIDES

e first caught a sneak peek of the Tonale back in 2019 when, displayed to the public as a concept vehicle, it was greeted with great enthusiasm by car connoisseurs. Fast forward to 2023 and, thanks to the team at Behbehani Brothers, we found ourselves staring at a vehicle that proved even more impressive in the flesh or, should we say, in the paint.

Unmistakable Exterior Design What stood out to us most about this all-new Alfa was its exuberant curves, complemented by the brand’s customary flair. An aggressive-looking bonnet culminates in the brand’s unmistakable scudetto – finished in black – with the classic Alfa Romeo emblem sitting front and centre like a badge of honour. Further emphasising the car’s contemporary design are sleek, triple-barrelled, sinecurve headlights with new full-LED adaptive matrix. As we moved to the sides, we appreciated the smooth transition of the car’s bodyline that accentuates the all-round athletic stance of this SUV. Our must-mention features of the flanks include the striking five-hole wheel rims, along with the model’s standard 19inch, diamond-cut alloy wheels, underscored by red-painted Brembo brake callipers. Ornamentation is delivered through elegant Veloce model badges located on the fenders. We also appreciated the gloss black painted window surrounds that underscore the privacy glass – perfect to enjoy a moment to yourself and avoid the summer sun. At the back end we found the three-plus-three taillights to ensure a balanced overall look to the exterior, with the familiar Alfa Romeo emblem sitting proudly above the elegant Tonale badge. Delivering a subtle promise of superior performance are two separate tailpipes located on each side of the diffuser.

Convenient Cockpit Once inside, we were initially taken by the abundance of space on offer as well as the comfort provided by the perforated Alcantara and leatherette seats. We discovered a roomy and driver-friendly cockpit that provides a relaxed and convenient environment from which to operate this tidy and trendy SUV. It was, however, in the little details that the Tonale’s interior truly began to shine. A beefy gear selector complete with a little tricolore flag, allows for effortless selection between the Park, Reverse, Neutral and Drive options. Alfa Romeo have also provided additional traditional touches in their new SUV, with all perfectly placed gauges reverting to the brand’s historic twin-portal design, albeit now in digital format. We collectively agreed that the three-spoke sports steering wheel felt perfect in hand and combined with the aluminium pedals, door sills and shift paddles, imbued the Tonale’s interior with a sense of high expense.

New Age Tech And Infotainment After fiddling with the Tonale’s all-new infotainment system for a day, we now understand why this SUV’s fast and efficient interface – perfect for multitasking – is considered best-in-class in its segment. 42

fact magazine

This customisable Android operating system, featuring 4G connectivity and over-the-air updates, includes a fully digital 12.3inch screen, in addition to the primary 10.25-inch touchscreen unit. We established that amongst the main drawing cards of this system are its easily discernible screen layouts, along with the built-in Amazon Alexa voice assistant features, both allowing hands to be kept on the steering wheel as much as possible. Moreover, we found the traditional USB and USB-C ports in the front and back of the car, along with the wireless charging pad up front, to add to the convenient nature of the Tonale’s distinguished interior. Perhaps the most impressive feature of the new Tonale is the inclusion of industry-first technology. The brand has debuted non-fungible token (NFT) technology that links the car with an NFT digital certificate. In a nutshell, this groundbreaking tech, based on the blockchain card concept, records the main stages in the life of an individual vehicle. With the customer’s consent, the NFT will record vehicle data, generating a certificate that can be used as a guarantee that the car has been properly maintained, thereby providing a positive impact on its residual value.

Imposing Power And Performance Powered by a turbo-charged GDI (gasoline direct injection), four-cylinder, fuel injection system, the all-new Tonale proved more than capable when out on the tarmac. Coupled with a nine-speed automatic transmission, this sprightly SUV produces 268hp and 400Nm of power at 3000rpm. After putting it through its paces, we concluded that the Tonale’s power is complemented by its best-in-class driving dynamics. Thanks to its optimised weight distribution, suspension system and direct steering, it delivers impeccable dynamic behaviour that endows the SUV with the feel of a high-performance sports car. We must say, we had a thoroughly enjoyable on-road experience in this most capable vehicle.

The inclusion of Level 2 autonomous driving with new advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) added to the feeling of complete control and comfort provided by this exceptional Alfa Romeo specimen. This superior system includes intelligent adaptive cruise control (IACC), lane centring (LC) and traffic jam assist – which automatically adjusts speed and trajectory, keeping the car in the middle of the lane and at a distance from the vehicle in front.

Our Verdict The all-new Alfa Romeo Tonale is a classy and capable sports SUV, offering an abundance of cutting-edge tech and a safe and comfortable travelling environment. ✤

iNaturalist

Cloaked

iNaturalist is a social network for sharing biodiversity information to help each other learn about nature. The app’s primary goal is to connect people to nature and secondary, is to generate scientifically valuable biodiversity data from these personal encounters. iNaturalist helps users identify plants and animals with visually similar suggestions, verified by dedicated contributors. Users can take or import a photo, view the top-10 matches of the most similar species and tap through them to get more information. Moreover, subscribers can create an account to share their observations and connect with a community of experts and naturalists to learn more. By recording and sharing their observations, users can create research-quality data that could help scientists working to better understand and protect nature. iNaturalist has been translated into dozens of languages thanks to multilingual enthusiasts who want to see the community grow.

As the number of applications we access daily keeps increasing, the risk of our sensitive data being breached is an everpresent concern. Cloaked lets users take control of their data by providing them a personalised, fully-encrypted server that generates unlimited, secure identities in place of personal info. Cloaked believes that users have the right to privacy and produces unlimited emails, phone numbers, passwords and usernames. Traditional password managers make saving repeat information for different accounts the norm, which leaves holes in users’ privacy and security that can then grant easy access to hackers. But Cloaked saves users’ identities with unique information, so logins are easy but the information is diverse and virtually impossible to identify. The app’s zero access architecture means that users’ data is encrypted on their side using an encryption key that even Cloaked does not have access to.

Captain Waleed Abdulhameed Al Alawi The Chairman of Bahrain International Golf Course Company and the Royal Golf Club, Captain Waleed Abdulhameed Al Alawi, reminisces about the year gone by and shares interesting developments at the Club.

What are your thoughts as you look back at 2023? As Chairman of Bahrain International Golf Course Company and the Royal Golf Club (RGC), reflecting on 2023 fills me with immense pride and excitement. Our team has undertaken a major project of renovation of the golf course, aligning it with international standards and ensuring it is primed for the prestigious DP World Tour in February. This renovation not only enhances the playing experience but also positions RGC as a key player in Bahrain's burgeoning tourism sector. 58

fact magazine

As you mentioned, the highly-anticipated DP World Tour is returning to the Kingdom after 13 years. How was this milestone achieved and how is RGC preparing to host this mega event? The return of the DP World Tour to the Kingdom after 13 years is a historic moment for RGC and Bahrain as a whole. Achieving this milestone required meticulous planning, collaboration and a dedicated team. We have worked closely with BOC (Bahrain Olympic Committee), event organisers and local authorities to ensure a seamless experience for players and spectators alike.

5 OVER 5 •

Operationally, RGC has invested in state-of-the-art facilities and services to meet the demands of such a mega event, including major course enhancements. Tell us more about the recent golf course renovation? The RGC team has spent endless hours over the summer renovating the golf course. The biggest enhancement project got underway in July with a number of greens on the front and back nine being redesigned along with all the bunkers. The changes are aimed at creating larger, less undulating playing surfaces which will enable more pin positions to be available. With less undulation there will also be an opportunity to increase the firmness of the greens, which will lead to tour-standard green speeds. The exciting journey that the renovations have brought to the club aims to challenge the best golfers in the world whilst also providing the highest quality experience for those that play the course throughout the year. Golf enthusiasts from all over the region, along with members and visitors to the Royal Golf Club, will witness a showcase of golf at its finest. Apart from the DP World Tour, are there any other events, developments or plans for RGC in the coming months? Absolutely! To cater to the growing interest in golf, we are collaborating with local schools and universities in Bahrain to

promote junior golf and nurture young talent. Creating pathways for future golf champions is a core belief. Overall, we are dedicated to continuously improving the RGC, providing an unparalleled experience for all, from beginners to seasoned professionals. These exciting plans will strengthen our position as a premier golfing destination. What is your long-term strategic vision for the RGC? The long-term strategic vision focuses on establishing the club as a premier destination for golf enthusiasts around the world. It will undergo several positive changes to achieve this vision, starting with the course enhancement and redesign that took place this year. The enhancement project focused on implementing advanced sustainability practices such as water conservation, organic maintenance techniques and other sustainability initiatives. To encourage player development, we will introduce comprehensive programmes tailored to different age groups and skill levels, including coaching clinics, junior golf camps and beginner-friendly initiatives. Delivering exceptional family-friendly experiences will be our focus by offering personalised services, exclusive programmes and an array of social activities. We aspire to become a beacon of excellence, fostering a love for the sport and enriching the lives of our members and the wider community. ✤ fact magazine

The combination of family influence, cherished memories and culinary exploration fuelled my career choice. reece is the country that I have visited the most. The proximity to Bahrain and diverse scenarios such as paradisiac islands and magical mountainous areas make this country a place to explore over many trips. However, if you want to taste Greece without leaving Bahrain, the newly opened Yamaz restaurant at Sofitel Bahrain Zallaq Thalassa Sea & Spa will take you there. Chef Nikolaos Koulousias is the maestro of the culinary experience at this authentic Mediterranean-Greek cuisine destination. In his words, what makes his menu so special is that he uses fresh local ingredients and makes them authentically Greek. Yamaz is located below Maison Sushi and underwent a major transformation to resemble a laid-back restaurant by the Mediterranean Sea. In this case, the vast Arabian Gulf is what you see from your table. The décor is full of natural elements in tones of blue and sand that take over cushions, chairs and lamps – tastefully designed to make you feel welcomed. The ample space is covered by retractable glass doors and ceilings that can be closed in summer or left open during nice weather for a delightful dinner under the stars, with the sound of the ocean and Greek tunes – most definitely the place to be during sunset. The restaurant is gorgeous, but we went there with one mission: to eat! The first dishes to reach our table were various cold and hot starters prepared with multiple techniques. In the hands of Chef Nikolaos, the Greek Salad comes with compressed tomato juice and capers (traditionally added in his hometown in Leros), organic feta cheese and oregano. The Yamaz salad is one of the

signature dishes and comes with crunchy mixed leaves, honey dressing, sweet fresh figs and smoked halloumi (smoked inhouse for 48 hours), a combination of flavours that takes you to Greece with a twist. There is a section on the menu called Crudos (raw). From that, we had the Ceviche Tsipoyra, thinly sliced seabream marinated in lemon, stacked with mango carpaccio and adorned with passion fruit – an unexpected mix which was super refreshing with an exotic touch – and the Lepto Mosxari, thinly sliced beef, truffle paste, rocket leaves and kefalotyri cheese. The presentation is crucial, as the ingredients are layered so you get them all in one spoonful. The hot starters arrived. Perfectly fried calamari, baby squid and seaweed accompanied by garlic and lemon aioli, a favourite of the table, as we kept chatting and returning for more. The Arni Crochetta, two pieces of slow-braised lamb croquette with feta fondue, pecorino cheese and smoked paprika. A clever addition to this dish is the subtle tanginess of lemon and orange zest in the breadcrumbs encasing the soft interior; a small detail can transform a dish. However, the best was the Troyfopita, a phyllo pastry stuffed with organic feta cheese, black truffle and honey glaze. This dish combines Greek staples that I adore: flaky pastry, high-quality feta, delicate sweetness from honey and the earthiness of truffles – love at first bite! After a show-stopping start, it was time for mains. We tried Xtapodi, octopus cooked to perfection, accompanied by white beans, celeriac purée and lemon potato, which was set on fire in front of us to add a grilled and smoked flavour, divine! For meat lovers, Filetto Mosxari was a succulent piece of beef tenderloin that went very well with fried polenta sticks, olives and tomato confit. The traditional Mussaka, the Greek ‘lasagna’, prepared with

layers of minced meat, zucchini, potatoes and eggplant topped with a smooth bechamel sauce is a comforting dish for many and was done to perfection. From the mains, my highlight goes to Kritharotto made with orzo and seasonal seafood that’s saffronand orange scented. Chef Nikolaos said this is a recipe from his grandmother, a one pot dish created with love. It is very creamy with hints of tomato and mint, with each seafood element cooked at its best and a beautiful citrus flavour. The desserts were made not only for our stomachs but also for our eyes. The Portokalopita is a traditional orange semolina cake topped with frozen Greek yoghurt Chantilly and orange jelly; very dense with a robust orange flavour, perfect to be eaten with a cup of coffee. The Mykonos Karavi is a fun-looking chocolate concoction – a chocolate boat filled with all sorts of chocolate recipes, from mousses to sponges balanced with hazelnut. And the last and everyone’s favourite, The Athens Castle, a reinterpretation of one of the simplest and yummiest desserts in the world: Greek yoghurt and honey. At Yamaz, it comes as a Greek frozen yoghurt with honey and a surprise interior of poached apple – an ingenious dessert and the perfect end to this Greek feast. I can say that Chef Nikolaos' creations took me to Greece, with flavours I recognised in a heartbeat. However, they were so wellreinterpreted that they became something completely new and unique. I am already craving some dishes and will need many more visits to satisfy that yearning! ✤

B

ahrain is home to people from all over the world, which might be why we have so many restaurants offering diverse cuisines – we are incredibly lucky! And if you are looking for a culinary journey under the same roof, The Gulf Hotel Bahrain Convention & Spa is the place to go; you will find options from Japanese and Thai to Italian, Mexican and much more. I have been to The Gulf Hotel many times, but it was my first time dining at Takht Jamsheed, the traditional Iranian restaurant. I have to say that this is a cuisine I am unfamiliar with, and I was curious to explore its dishes – just like travelling somewhere new, how exciting is that? When entering the restaurant, the décor and Iranian tunes transport you to a Persian palace, somewhere grand where royalty feast on marvellous dishes. Grand columns and intricate tiles embrace the palatial feeling with Persian symbols adorning the walls; swords, shields, draped fabric on the ceilings and many small details such as vases and sculptures. A visual reception that we were happy to take in. To add to the atmosphere, a singer performs Iranian songs most evenings. Yasmeen, the restaurant manager, welcomed us with a big smile and helped us throughout the dinner by teaching us all about the food and how to pronounce the names of the dishes. We really appreciated her attentiveness. We started our dining voyage feasting on simple but delicious hors-d'oeuvres composed of small pots with green leaves, walnuts and feta cheese accompanied by a thin flat 70

bread. I spread the feta cheese on my bread and filled it with arugula, mint and kurrat (a cross between spring onion and leek); what a fantastic combination of textures and flavours! Sometimes, less is more. After this effortless start, it was time for appetisers. In my opinion, they don't get the attention they deserve and, at Takht Jamsheed, they are worth an entire review. We had the Pish Ghazaye Mitra, a combination of two cold and three hot starters. The cold ones were Salad Shirazi, a mix of small pieces of chopped cucumber, tomatoes and onions bathed in lime juice and olive oil, a very refreshing combination and my dining companion's favourite of them all, and Mast Khiyar, creamy yoghurt and cucumber mixed with selected Iranian herbs that resembled the Greek tzatziki, in terms of texture. The hot options were Kashk Bademjan, fried eggplants and onions topped with yoghurt, olive oil and mint, this was my favourite for its smokiness and incredible combination of crunchy onions and soft yoghurt. Mirza Ghasemi is composed of eggplant puree, tomatoes and eggs with turmeric and garlic, something I would happily have for breakfast for the comforting memories its flavours triggered in me. And, last but not least, Nargesi, made with fried spinach in butter topped with crispy onions and cream. I am not the biggest fan of this green leaf because of its strong taste but, in this dish, it was mild and not overpowering – delicious. Before moving to the entrées, we met the man behind these authentic recipes, Mahmoud Jalali, Head Chef at Takht Jamsheed, and thanked him for the delicious meal we were enjoying. For the mains, we had Khoresht Sabzijat as a vegetarian option. This traditional Iranian stew is made with vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, carrots and baby okra in a soothing green sauce and topped with fried onions. The Iranian herbs give the final touch, adding complex flavours, in my opinion, it is an excellent choice during winter months. The veggie dishes were full of flavour, but if you are a meat lover, you will truly enjoy dining at Takht Jamsheed. The grilled kababs are the real stars on the menu. We had a selection of lamb and chicken, and they were all cooked to perfection. The Chelo Kabab Soltani is a combination of minced and fillet lamb, Kabab Dandeh, marinated grilled lamb chops with French fries and grilled vegetables and Joojeh Kabab Bedone Ostekhan, char-grilled boneless chicken with a touch of yoghurt and saffron. The meat feast was served with two options of rice: saffron, coming in two layers, a white base with bright yellow grains on top, beautifully decorated with zereshk (dried barberries), and the traditional, mixed with broad beans and dill, considered the best pairing for lamb dishes. The saffron rice was my favourite; the flavours were well-balanced, adding a nice touch to the whole meal. It was dessert time, and we had Faloodeh, a rice vermicelli granita flavoured with lime, cherry syrup and rose water and a scoop of saffron ice cream. The Faloodeh reminded me of a sorbet, but its texture and taste were something that I had never tried before. It was a very unusual combination that my palate was a bit confused about at first, but it was an enjoyable way to end this fantastic meal accompanied by traditional Persian tea (black tea with mint) served in a hand-painted teapot inspired by Iranian art. ✤

live carving station, an assortment of seafood, a variety of cheeses, fresh salads and decadent desserts are now part of the new brunch setup at JJ’s Irish Restaurant. The mains are still made to order so you can enjoy them fresh and hot. And they’re unlimited, meaning you can order any number of dishes from the menu. We sat in the well-lit outdoor area with a retractable roof. Barrels repurposed for the buffet setup and indoor foliage added to the rustic charm of the space, reminiscent of a traditional Irish inn. My dining companions and I ordered a selection of nine dishes, featuring breakfast and lunch options, which arrived in no time. A breakfast girl, I tucked into the vibrant plate of Lox & Eggs. The salmon is served on the side so I could combine every bite to my preference. It was the creamiest scramble I’ve ever eaten. The salty coral ribbons of home-cured lox added an umami element to the dish, which came with a dollop of creamy guac and crispy hashbrowns. My companion went for Chicken & Waffles, which also featured JJ’s creamy scrambled eggs. The tangy buffalo sauce had a slight kick that complemented the juicy, chargrilled protein but the butter milk sauce and avocado balanced it out. The subtle sweetness of homemade Belgian waffles, with crispy edges and soft insides, mingled well with the savoury chicken juices. Chorizo on Toast was next in the line of digestive fire for me. Bringing together two of my favourites, spicy chorizo and rye bread, this one was a winner all the way. The smoked flavour of the sausage elevated every bite and the sweet relish complemented it well. The poached egg concealing a river of sunshine and the silken Hollandaise sauce sealing the deal. JJ’s offers both, regular and beef bacon. This staple breakfast item features in many of their dishes including Bacon & Sausages, which layers these meaty marvels on a homemade toasted brioche bun; Bacon Wrapped Sausage, a salty protein parcel served on comforting mash and a pool of rich onion gravy, and French Toast & Bacon, a symphony of sweet and salty flavours that tantalised my taste buds – I highly recommend it. I took a break to tour the buffet with my glass of hops. The salads beckoned and I went in for the classic Caesar but you could choose other options such as Cod & Potato, Goat Cheese & Kale and more. The crunchy lettuce offered respite from the meaty goodness that had gone before (and that which was to follow!). The dressings were all freshly prepared. In fact, everything at JJ’s, from the jams and preserves to the varieties of bread are homemade – you can taste it in every bite! While I stacked my plate with cheeses, from Edam to Gouda and Brie to manchego, my companion explored the oceanic wonders of the Seafood Station. Oysters, crayfish, shrimp, tuna, smoked salmon… she was spoiled for choice. Each came with an accompanying sauce. Savoury tuna with pungent Horseradish sauce, shrimp with the zingy tomato-caper one… We both had to make a pit stop for the roast beef striploin at the Live Carving Station. If you’re in the mood for a good ol’ roast, this one’s a must-try. The meat was buttery and juicy, its flavours intensified by a shiny gravy. You could opt for barbecue sauce too. The Yorkshire pudding had the perfect texture, crispy on the outside 74

and soft and fluffy on the inside. Along with the side of veggies, it complemented the hero of this dish. I must recommend the Corned Beef & Veggies from the menu. Brined for 10 days and slow braised for three hours, the protein had the perfect pink hue and melted in my mouth. My companion was all praises for the Irish Mac ‘n’ Cheese. It was folded in with a creamy sauce and topped with crumbled blue cheese, mildly sweet fried leek slivers and that moreish home-cured corned beef. Seafood lovers will enjoy the light yet flavourful Cider Braised Mussels & Clams, with Irish mussels and local clams sautéed with silken olive oil, garlic and shallots, and then, steamed in apple cider sauce. The shellfish were fresh, I could tell, and being such a delicate protein, ideally cooked in this simple medley of aromatics. We did eat a lot but since the brunch runs from 12pm to 5pm, we could take breaks and pace ourselves. The music, classics, offered the perfect backdrop. As we enjoyed our dessert – a selection of different types of cakes, crème brûlée, mousse and more, we browsed through the menu. There are two brunch packages – Premium and Regular – with selected beverages. The difference lies in the drinks included in the offer. If you’re looking for a hearty feast of comforting brunch classics, JJ’s is just the one! ✤

• FACT DINING AWARDS The cream of the Kingdom’s food and beverage (F&B) and hospitality sectors, VIP guests and our partners turned out as we gathered to celebrate the Fact Dining Awards Bahrain 2023. Now in its 14th edition, this year’s gala ceremony attracted a record 452 guests and was held at The Art Hotel & Resort, Amwaj. A great deal of hard work and planning went into the event which was made possible with the support of our generous partners: The Art Hotel & Resort, Audi Centre Bahrain, BMMI, the Ahlan app, Bidfood, Vatel Bahrain – International Hospitality School, Anorris Events, HSP Marketing and Asgharali. There were several new categories, including the much-anticipated Chef of the Year, which was awarded purely through public votes to the very deserving Roaya Saleh of Villa Mamas. As always, two winners were chosen in

each of the other 54 categories – the Favourites, selected by a public on-line vote, and the Best, chosen by industry experts and the FACT editorial team. This year’s awards saw more than 800 nominations across categories ranging

from family-friendly and brunch to speciality offerings, regional cuisines and newcomers. And, on top of all these, came the awards for Overall Favourite Restaurant, which was won by Fiamma at Sofitel Bahrain Zallaq Thalassa Sea & Spa, and Overall Best Restaurant, which was won by CUT by Wolfgang Puck at Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay. Approximately 65,000 people cast individual votes and, for the second year running, there was an uptick in performance by individual operators, a sure indicator of the health of the sector. FACT Magazines Group Publisher, Rami Khalil, said: “With every awards, I am always amazed and grateful at the support we receive from both the industry and our readers and voters. It was our great pleasure to host the Fact Dining Awards 2023 which I believe was one of our best events to date, and we look forward to welcoming everybody back again next year.” ✤

hey say all roads lead to Rome and what would be a trip to Italy without a visit to the ‘Eternal City’? For us though, a stay at Anantara Palazzo Naiadi was the cherry on the cake of a short but sweet sojourn in this amazing metropolis. Our arrival was as smooth as can be, but a note of warning for anyone heading to Palazzo Naiadi – it is literally three minutes’ walk from Roma Termini, the main train station. We wondered why the taxi driver gave us a bit of an odd look! The hotel takes its name from the Fountain of the Naiads, which is right out front in Piazza della Repubblica, its elegant, ancient statuary pouring forth streams of water that glitter in the early morning sun. After a swift check in, we headed to our room and found our window looked out over this 1888 masterpiece.

Upstairs Downstairs We were treated to a Duplex Suite – the living area and bathroom on one level and the superbly comfortable bed up a set of stairs on an eye-catching mezzanine. On entering the room, I was blown away by the aforementioned window, reaching right up to the double-height ceiling and lending the space an immense sense of grandeur and light. Thick carpeting and an elegant and comfortable threepiece suite invited us to relax and pore over an artistic coffee table book or simply chill with a drink from the well-stocked mini bar or the Italian essential, a professional looking coffee machine. My breath was taken again by the bathroom. Clad in marble the intoxicating shade of warm honey, we were greeted by a deep soaking tub alongside an enclosed rain shower and double sinks surrounded by toiletries from Aqua Di Parma. I didn’t steal them… but I was sorely tempted! After a quick spruce up, we headed back downstairs to explore the lobby, which is very definitely the focal point in a property that’s abundant in amazing spaces. Intricately moulded ceilings house interesting lighting installations including an impressive Murano glass chandelier. And the contemporary art dotted around is both thought provoking and pleasing to the eye.

Dining Extraordinaire Our first experience of the exceptional culinary offerings available at Anantara Palazzo Naiadi was in a quiet room off the Lobby Bar – which, by the way, is beautiful and put me in mind of something out of The Great Gatsby, elegant and refined with the feeling that you could easily encounter Rome’s great and good in evening dress, en route to the theatre or a swanky dinner. For a late lunch after our arrival, I chose a club sandwich which could easily have fed both myself and my travelling companion (and probably a few more besides). The portion was enormous, the sandwich tasty and satisfying. The property is home to several outstanding dining outlets, 104 fact magazine

but premier amongst them must be Ineo, where Chef Heros De Agostinis, who formerly worked in Bahrain, combines his experiences as a world traveller with his strong Italian, Abruzzesi roots. Small, with eclectically designed, subdued lighting and plush velvet seating, this space speaks intimacy in a reverent whisper from the stunning entrance bar to the attentive and knowledgeable staff. We were lucky enough to sample a tasting menu with grape pairing – Ineo’s Journey – which began with a delightful glass of bubbles and progressed through decadent sea scallops with gazpacho of carrots and Philippine lime followed by marinated Sicilian prawns with passion fruit and chilli and coriander oil. A char-grilled Amalfi lemon filled with sweetbreads, courgettes and black lime sauce felt like a journey to the gorgeously picturesque coast below Naples, where we spotted the biggest lemons I’ve ever seen, and ravioli with muhammara filling, seafood and Chef Heros’ Baharat (Middle Eastern spice mix) was an incredible taste of home. I could wax lyrical at length about this experience. Seven courses, each more intriguing than the last, with thoughtful, curated cellar pairings to perfectly complement the wonderful flavours. But the overall impression was that Chef Heros is not just a charming and welcoming host but also a culinary master whose ability to combine the most unexpected ingredients – textures, tastes, herbs and spices – results in a true journey for the senses. We also headed to SEEN by Olivier, the gorgeous rooftop bar and restaurant, for another chance to take in the

spectacular views. Recently opened and rapidly establishing a reputation as the place to see and be seen, this hotspot abuts the pool, where, by day, you’ll find guests enjoying a haven of tranquillity in the heart of the buzzing city. But by night, its laid-back mix of great music and a selection of mixed drinks, snacks and an eclectic menu mean it’s drawing in a fun crowd. Our last foodie spot to try was La Fontana Ristorante where we started our days with the most amazing breakfast spread. From eggs and bacon to the wonderful hams and cheeses for which Italy is rightly famed, a huge selection of cakes – those Italians sure do wake up with a sweet tooth – plus cereals and fruit for the more health conscious, there wasn’t any brekkie ‘must have’ I didn’t spot.

Historically Speaking Luxury travel these days is about so much more than highthread-count sheets and fabulous bathroom amenities – though these are, of course, very welcome. Anantara is a brand that’s well acquainted with the concept of the experiential. Thus, after a brief chat with our host, my companion and I found ourselves booked on the Vespa Sidecar Tour of Rome. And yes, it was every bit as much fun as it sounds. With one of us seated behind the driver/guide, Allessi, and the other tucked safely into the sidecar, we, and two other intrepid couples, set off on a guided tour of the Eternal City which Allessi rightly described as “the world’s biggest open-air museum”. Aside from the envious glances 106 fact magazine

and amused waves from the people we passed, which was pretty cool, this really is the ideal way to visit lots of busy spots in a city tightly packed with absolute must-sees. From the Trevi Fountain to the Pantheon – where we went inside and learned loads of interesting facts from Allessi – to the top of Gianicolo Hill, where we stopped to enjoy the panoramic view of the capital spread below, and then down into Trastevere and the Jewish Ghetto, we covered so much more ground in a few hours than we could have managed on foot or via conventional transport – not to mention gaining pretty impressive bragging rights and some awesome pictures to remember it by. And, speaking of the experiential, Anantara Palazzo Naiadi can also arrange off-the-books-style Vatican tours, including a Christmas Eve mass – something anyone would love, regardless of their faith. Back at base and it was time for a tour taking in a range of rooms from the regular Deluxe to the Presidential Suite – totally fit for royalty and more than a few VIPs have made this their Roman base. The hotel itself is a 19th century marble palace built on top of the famous Diocletian thermal baths that date from AD298 to AD306. In another of those one-of-a-kind encounters, we headed to the lower ground floor where meeting rooms have been constructed in vaulted areas surrounding the excavated foundations, pools and mosaics of the baths, which can be seen under glass. It’s fabulous to view but I’m not sure I’d get much work done in a meeting there!

And So, To Spa And, last but not least, no visit to an Anantara property would be complete without a trip to the spa, which is at the heart of the brand’s Asian beginnings. Also known for incorporating local ingredients and traditions, I got to enjoy the Diocletian Ritual featuring olive oil, honey, sea salt, salt-pan mud, St. John’s wort, laurel, sage and lavender all fused together to detox, purify, enrich and heal. Spa Manager Luccio explained that all the plants are grown and harvested in Italy, giving that wonderful, fresh, local feel and, after a scrub, wrap and massage designed along the lines of those carried out back in the days of the original thermal baths, my skin felt amazing and even my soul revived.

Arrivederci Roma All too soon it was time to say goodbye and we headed to the airport secure in the knowledge that we’ll be back – after all, as instructed, we’d turned our backs and tossed coins over our shoulders into the Trevi Fountain, so it’s only a matter of time, right? ✤

Director: Ridley Scott Cast: Joaquin Phoenix, Vanessa Kirby, Tahar Rahim, Ben Miles, Youssef Kerkour, Matthew Needham

The movie masterfully captures Bonaparte’s relentless journey to power while also highlighting his visionary military and political tactics"

The Killer Need to Know:

An assassin, after botching an important hit, finds himself part of an international manhunt and is on the run. But an unexpected incident involving his partner propels him into a vendetta that causes him to break his one rule of never making things personal.

Director: David Fincher Cast: Michael Fassbender, Arliss Howard, Tilda Swinton, Charles Parnell, Kerry O'Malley, Sophie Charlotte

Why Is It Worth Watching?

With his distinct approach to cinema and an undeniable expertise in combining visual effects and incredible storytelling, Ridley Scott is one of the best filmmakers of our generation. By no means a stranger to crafting breathtaking historical epics, with the likes of Gladiator and, more recently, The Last Duel under his belt, the veteran director now takes on the life of famed French military commander Napoleon Bonaparte, portrayed by Joaquin Phoenix. Phoenix will be reuniting with the director on screen for the first time in 23 years. He last played the main antagonist Commodus in Gladiator, a role that won him an Academy Award Nomination for Best Supporting Actor. Napoleon is a spectacle-filled, action epic that details the riveting rise and fall of the iconic French Emperor, but simultaneously also shines a light on his fascinating but rocky relationship with Empress Joséphine. Shot against a stunning backdrop of large-scale filmmaking brilliance and elevated by phenomenal performances from the cast, the movie masterfully captures Bonaparte’s relentless journey to power while also highlighting his visionary military and political tactics, that are showcased in some of the most astonishing battle sequences seen on screen.

Why Is It Worth Watching?

Director David Fincher and screenwriter Andrew Kevin Walker reunite after their masterpiece Se7en. Based on a French graphic novel series by Alexis Nolent, the movie’s plot follows the chaos that ensues after an assassin with a perfect record finally misses. A lot is conveyed in narration, as we listen to the thoughts of the cold, calculated and emotionally detached assassin that Michael Fassbender effortlessly portrays. An attack on his girlfriend sees him turning the tables and realising that the only defence he’s left with is an offence. Though seemingly a fast-paced thriller on the surface, the movie doesn’t shy away from taking its sweet time unravelling specific plot points. In those moments, the assassin’s personality traits such as his dollar-store, philosophical takes on himself, his job and life, and his reliance on listening to The Smiths to calm his nerves as he carries out murders, unexpectedly give the movie a comedic and borderline silly twist making it less serious and more of a fun watch than expected.

ON THE RECORD

FULLY BOOKED

NON-FICTION HISTORY MILITARY

The Book At War

By Andrew Pettegree

FOLK ROCK

POP/R&B

Hadsel By Beirut

Good People By Majid Jordan

Following recurring health issues and career-threatening throat problems that led to a cancelled tour in 2019, Beirut’s Zach Condon took himself to a cabin in Hadsel, in northern Norway, to rest and recover. With minimal daylight and living in a secluded cabin, he took inspiration from the beauty of the region and the local Hadsel kirke (church) organ, that eventually bore fruit as the sixth Beirut album – Hadsel. Dealing with a difficult personal period, one would expect the music to reflect a sullen and sombre tone, but Condon, through the cathartic creation process, manifests an adeptly crafted album that’s melancholic, hopeful and uplifting. Opening with the title track, Condon’s voice basks in the beautiful orchestral backdrop that keeps building throughout the record. On Arctic Forest and several other songs, the aforementioned organ accompanied with his rich baritone harmonies brings an almost hymnal and heightened quality to the arrangements. While the impassioned So Many Plans, sonically and lyrically expresses a range of emotions from distress to acceptance. The splendid use of trumpets, lowpitched ukulele tunes, old drum machines and modular synthesisers on the album especially on tracks such as Spillhaugen, January 18th and The Tern are riveting.

Good People is the fourth studio album from Majid Jordan, an alternative R&B duo from Toronto, Canada, consisting of singer Majid Al Maskati (originally from Bahrain) and producer Jordan Ullman. Signed to OVO Sound label, they first gained exposure for writing and coproducing Drake's Hold On, We're Going Home – Majid’s backing vocals are a clear highlight of the track. Recorded in the Kingdom and Toronto, the tight nine-track album’s production incorporates soul, synthpop, new wave and neo soul elements reminiscent of their roots. While vocally and lyrically still doing what they’ve consistently done best – evoking emotions of love. The album opens with Tears In Your Eyes a heartfelt declaration of devotion to a lover. Followed by the smooth sounding Waiting For You (feat. Naomi Sharon) which is a standout. Hands Tied, a moody atmospheric bop, offers the grooviest bassline moving masterfully through the track with Majid’s vocals gently floating over it. While the gratifyingly synth-driven Violet could easily fit in alongside songs from Daft Punk’s Random Access Memories. On the closer Sunset, Majid tenderly croons as the song gracefully encapsulates the relaxed listening mood of the album. An undoubtedly good creation!

We tend not to talk about books and war in the same breath—one ranks among humanity’s greatest inventions, the other among its most terrible. But as esteemed literary historian Andrew Pettegree demonstrates, the two are deeply intertwined. The Book at War explores the various roles that books have played in conflicts throughout the globe. Winston Churchill used a travel guide to plan the invasion of Norway and, during the Cold War, both sides used books to spread propaganda. With precise historical analysis and sparkling prose, The Book at War accounts for the power – and the ambivalence – of words at war.

What We’re (Still) Talking About Breaking The Cycle

A ‘Fine’ Solution

Jokes Apart…

Gordon Ramsay is now a proud dad to six. The latest addition to the 'Ramsay Bunch' came as a surprise to fans. It might be because his oldest is 25! Moreover, it seems like only yesterday that Oscar Ramsay came long. That being said, we have no doubt that the Michelin-starred, celebrity chef is going to be a wonderful father – not perfect (but then, who is!) but wonderful; and quite a hands-on one

The festive season is upon us and that means we will see a surge in food waste in the weeks to come. According to a recent news report, the UAE is considering imposing fines on household food waste. The mechanism will be similar to how you pay for water or electricity. The head of Ne'ma, National Food Loss and Waste Initiative, believes that's

Mathew Perry’s death has shocked and saddened fans word wide. Famous for his role as Chandler Bing in the TV series Friends, the actor was known for his sense of humour, both on and off set. While many have their reasons for not approving of his jokes featured on the show, you can’t deny that ‘being funny was Mathew’s thing’.

at that. After all, his public interactions with his children are endearing to say the least. It's amazing when a person manages to break generational trauma cycles. Despite having a dysfunctional relationship with his own father, which he has discussed openly, especially in his 2006 autobiography Humble Pie, Gordon, it seems, has always tried his best to be the dad he never had – anyone who thinks otherwise is just an 'idiot sandwich'!

the only way people will be more conscious. This isn't the first move of its kind. Remember in 2018 when Saudi announced a draft law that would fine restaurant goers 20% of the bill for leftovers? Given the staggering figures for global food waste and malnutrition, it's about time these proposals were put into action. The world, after all, has enough for our need and not for our greed!

Funnily enough, the actor was told off by a teacher who said that he would never amount to anything if he kept joking around all the time. When Perry appeared on the cover of People magazine, he sent that teacher a copy (burn!). It’s a great lesson for all of us to own who we really are and never give up on it. As Dr. Seuss said, ‘there’s no one alive who is youer than you’.
