Editor’s Letter
The last month of 2024 is here. I can't believe that I am actually writing these words. If you could do a quick recap, what are the memorable moments that pop into your mind? I can say that we have had more pages and more words than ever, since I joined the team four years ago, so I guess that's something worth mentioning – I am quite proud of all the articles, awesome interviews and beautiful pages we put together – well done us!
We were also super pampered and well-fed, thanks to the wonderful partners we had this year. We have tried and tested so many spa treatments in town and on our trips and have eaten in an array of restaurants – yes, we might have one of the best jobs in the world. I hope you enjoyed reading us as much as we had the pleasure of writing our findings for you.
This month, you will find a selection of festive looks to end the year in style. Talking about fashion, we were invited to attend the Fashion Trust Arabia event in Morocco for a fabulous Red Carpet night, supporting new talents from the MENA region.
We delve again into Van Cleef & Arpels watches' universe with an exclusive interview with Pascal Narbeburu, the brand's Timepieces Director, and offer an insight into the Lady Arpels Heures Florales collection.
We visited two spas, Raffles Spa & Wellness at Raffles Doha and Anjana Spa at Rixos Gulf Hotel Doha, for some serious pampering time.
And, if you want to explore a unique staycation, read all about one of the newest properties in Qatar: Our Habitas Ras Abrouq.
But if you are looking for a winter escape, we’ve selected a few must-visit places for this time of the year.
Happy festive days and a marvellous New Year!

Push PLUSH
On December 21, we officially welcome the winter season. There’s nothing better than choosing a luxurious fabric to celebrate the occasion – we settled on velvet!
The textile is not only spotted in clothing pieces. Aquazzura chose it to cover shoes and handbags for an eyecatching detail. Velvet's ability to reflect light gives this royal green piece a rich and everchanging colour effect.
Looking for a traditional way to add velvet to your wardrobe? Opt for a tailored blazer such as this Sportmax black creation. The broad shoulders and cinched waist add a feminine twist to this wellknown menswear piece.
When it comes to footwear, the fabric covers high heels and flats, giving them sophisticated flair. Hermès ballerinas are a cute way to embrace the trend and elevate your casual looks.
The cold season brings winter hats and we at OHLALA, absolutely love them! We have an eye on this retro-inspired velvet hat from Prada that looks like a rosebud – would you wear it?

A TOUCH OF LIGHT
One of the most sophisticated colour combos in the fashion world is gold and black. The metallic shade works as a shiny element to intensify the dark tone, creating an elegant outfit for any special event. Think of fabulous nights and memorable moments.
WINTER FLORALS
Flowers might not bloom during winter in most countries in the Northern Hemisphere (for us living in the Middle East, it is actually when they blossom – we have a special relationship with the weather here), but they are still a go-to pattern in the fashion world during this time of the year. They are extra vivid and stamped on a dark background for that wow, almost 3D, effect.
LET IT SNOW…
…in your wardrobe. In this part of the world, the anticipated white winter will only be seen in outfits. Invest in pieces painted in this shade from head to toe for sophisticated end-of-the-year looks. In some cultures, it’s a popular shade to step into the New Year with an extra dose of luck.

100 Years of Mastery
To mark its centenary, Loro Piana has released Master of Fibres, a book by historian and journalist Nicholas Foulkes, published by Assouline. This commemorative book plunges into the maison’s evolution from a wool trading company in the 1800s to a brand globally renowned for its cashmere. Using archival materials, interviews with the Loro Piana family, and historic photographs, Nicholas brings to life the history behind the brand. The book highlights milestones such as the founding of a wool mill in Piedmont’s Valsesia Valley by Pietro Loro Piana in 1924 and the launch of iconic products like the Grande Unità scarf in the 1980s. The 196-page volume, featuring 150 illustrations, is hand-bound and housed in a clamshell case crafted from Loro Piana’s Tela Sergio, a cotton-linen blend fabric. Part of Assouline’s Ultimate Collection, it stands as a tribute to the maison’s legacy of excellence in textiles and design.
Fashion For A Cause
Jil Sander has collaborated with the Only the Brave (OTB) Foundation to launch a limitededition T-shirt for charity, with 50% of its sales supporting the first public orphanage for girls in Kapisa, Afghanistan. This comes after the successful reopening of the province’s boys orphanage in 2022, also backed by OTB and Nove Caring Humans (one of the few Italian NGOs still operating in Afghanistan). The Kapisa orphanage provides 50 girls with shelter, education, healthcare and emotional support, offering a safe space amid widespread poverty, violence and early marriage. The orphanage also supports families in crisis, maintaining connections between children and their relatives. The T-shirt, featuring a heart motif and the slogan ‘for the children of the world’, is available worldwide in Jil Sander stores and online. Proceeds aim to empower vulnerable Afghan girls and break cycles of poverty.
Playful Fusion
Adidas Originals teams up with avant-garde fashion house Avavav for a debut collaborative collection, unveiled during Milan Fashion Week’s Spring and Summer 2025 presentation. Known for its subversive and provocative designs, Avavav, under Creative Director Beate Skonare Karlsson, brings its signature wit and internet-age aesthetic to this unique partnership. The Autumn and Winter 2024 collection, titled ‘The Worst Game You’ve Ever Seen’, explores the intersection of sports and fashion through exaggerated designs and playful irony. The campaign features a satirical take on a football match, with models portraying comically unathletic players, mishaps on a concrete pitch and a disengaged audience. The collection includes reimagined adidas classics, such as the Superstar sneaker adorned with Avavav’s iconic four-finger motifs. Garments have inflated silhouettes: cropped track tops, lengthened track robes and oversized puffer jackets. Accessories include finger-shaped hats and gloves to complete this unusual re-interpretation of sporting heritage.
For The Love Of Art
Parfums de Marly partners with the musée du Louvre to restore and enhance the Decorative Arts department’s 18th-century Cressent rooms in the Richelieu Wing. This collaboration, which began in September 2024, aims to revitalise these spaces, which are renowned for showcasing masterpieces of furniture, tapestries, paintings and objects from the royal collections and leading manufactures of the period. The project includes updating scenography, improving lighting, reorganising displays and implementing protective measures to safeguard these fragile works. Notably, pieces by Charles Cressent, a prominent Rococo artist, will undergo detailed study and potential restoration. Scheduled in three phases, the renovations will pause in early 2025 for a fashion exhibition before resuming and culminating in a grand reopening in 2026. The brand’s support highlights its dedication to French cultural heritage, with regular project updates shared on its platforms.
A Decade In The Folds
Purificación García’s Origami bag celebrates a decade since its introduction. The bag is inspired by the Japanese art of origami and is characterised by its geometric design, 3D structure and craftsmanship. It has become a key feature across the brand’s collections for men, women and accessories. For the anniversary, the brand collaborated with four plastic artists – Alba Galocha, Clara Cebrián, Sara Uriarte and Sophie Agullo, who offered their interpretations of the bag. Every artist had their own approach to the project, reflecting themes such as structure, simplicity and nature. The bag is made of high-quality Nappa leather for its flexibility and ability to hold folds. The production process mirrors origami techniques, with precise folds and triangular supports integrated to create its distinctive shape. This celebration reinforces the bag’s connection to craftsmanship and the creativity behind its design.

AS PRECIOUS AS TIME
Van Cleef & Arpels’ watches are made of beautiful stories that are transformed into intricate creations – art to wear on your wrist. This month, we spoke to Pascal Narbeburu, Director of Timepieces, to understand more about the maison’s timekeeping universe.
OHLALA – Back when you were studying engineering, did you imagine that your professional life would go towards timepieces? How did you enter this universe?
Pascal Narbeburu - I started my career in a car company as a project manager for gearbox prototypes in which you have wheels, maybe a foretaste of watchmaking. Being an engineer means being a lover of all techniques, regardless of the field. From the infinitely small to the infinitely large, attention to detail and rigour are essential to the success of any project. Curious about everything, I can’t help thinking about all kinds of improvements in every area. Van Cleef & Arpels’ creations always begin with a story and our work is in the service of these. The movement of an arm, a very precise gradation, requires indepth research to finally combine technical and aesthetic solutions to serve the story the maison wishes to tell.
OHLALA – Life is better with a touch of magic. Can you please explain the concept behind Van Cleef & Arpels’ Poetry of Time?
Pascal – Van Cleef & Arpels bears a unique vision of watchmaking that inspires dreams and wonderment. Poetry of Time is a rather abstract concept somehow, but it’s the idea that the maison wants to look at watchmaking, not from the perspective of technical and traditional watchmaking but from the idea of what is the nature of time that we want to express. Instead of starting with movements, cases, products or design, we start with an inspiration and that makes sense in the world of Van Cleef & Arpels. The maison’s timepieces are the result of a true collective work where jewellery know-how meets watchmaking expertise but also traditional crafts, from Paris’ Place Vendôme to Van Cleef & Arpels’ Watchmaking Workshops in Geneva. In keeping with the maison’s unique Poetry of Time, the craftsmen deploy the nobility of their expertise, transforming challenges into innovations and enchanting scenes.
OHLALA – We understand that each VC&A timepiece tells a story. However, they are not only about creative storytelling. How do you connect the beauty of the watches with the technical aspect? How important are the right technical details for each model?
Pascal – Van Cleef & Arpels’ timepieces are created using the sources of inspiration and history of the maison, and imbued with an expert savoir-faire. We try to blend fine watchmaking, jewellery and craftsmanship perfectly. In order to highlight the story the maison wishes to tell, along with our expertise in craftsmanship, such as enamelling or miniature painting, the technical elements of the watch remain in the background. We nevertheless use highly sophisticated tools to develop the extremely complicated animation modules of our Poetic Complications, for example. This ensures that we push back the limits of what is feasible, thanks to the collaboration of our watchmakers’ ingenuity and our engineers, using new technologies and innovation to further research and achieve our prowess. We also collaborate with engineering schools to develop highly specific machines, due to the unique character of our stories, which enable us to precisely control the quality with no compromise on the aesthetic and technical characteristics of our watches.
OHLALA – Time is such a precious commodity. In your opinion, why does wearing a unique watch to keep track of life make it more meaningful?
Pascal – What could be more poetic than to have the feeling of being able to suspend the passing of time for a moment? Van Cleef & Arpels’ creations are miniature artworks to be worn on the wrist, offering the wearer a timeless moment of escape. The excellence of our savoir-faire and expertise gives rise to enchanting creations: these métiers d’art and the delicacy of these skills, mastered in-house by our craftsmen, are as precious and rare as our timepieces and reflect our vision of time: the maison takes the time to create its timepieces.
OHLALA – Do you have a favourite timepiece?
Pascal – Answering this question is always difficult. But if I had to choose two among them, it would be the Pont des Amoureux for the symbol of love, an inspiration dear to the maison since its creation, and the Heures Florales, which displays a poetic vision of time, with an animation mechanism developed in-house, and the beauty of the métiers d’art used in the dial.
POETIC COMPLICATIONS
Van Cleef & Arpels has a different approach to creating timepieces. The Poetic Complications collection brings a distinct vision of the passing hours where enchantment and storytelling walk hand in hand with technical prowess and skilled enamelling techniques. Precious materials and the brand’s unique savoir-faire bring a captivating story to life on the dial. Retrograde movements, flower opening modules and minute windows enable time to be measured via a stroll in a flower garden or the movements of a ballerina. These marvellous creations provide invaluable moments of emotion, reflecting the astonishing imagination of the luxurious brand.
BLOSSOMING TIME
“When we work on watchmaking projects, our goal is to use mechanisms to capture the poetry of the passage of time. And what could be more poetic than measuring time with the opening and closing of a flower?” –Nicolas Bos, President and CEO of Van Cleef & Arpels
Nature is one of the main sources of inspiration for the jewellery and watches universe, and this theme has been fascinating to VC&A since 1906. The Heures Florales project was born after the floral clock concept (Horologium Florae) developed by Swedish botanist Carl Von Linné. The idea, featured in his 1751 book Philosophia Botanica, showcases a hypothetical garden plan with a wide variety of plants, where flowers open and close at specific moments of the day to show the time.
The Lady Arpels Heures Florales and Lady Arpels Heures Florales Ceresier watches mix art and science with their three-dimensional dials, offering a poetic rendition of timekeeping. Thanks to the opening and closing of 12 corollas, watching the time becomes a spectacle as the flowers blossom and close, renewing the dial’s scenery every 60 minutes.
WATCHMAKING EXCELLENCE
Up to 166 elements are set in motion to bring the dial to life, thanks to a module entirely developed by the artisans of the maison’s Watchmaking Workshops in Geneva. Each of this garden’s petals is articulated and connected to the watch’s mechanism. The technical challenge of combining so many elements is supplemented by ensuring a flower opening process with three different sequences. With each passing hour, the open flowers close to make way for a new combination. The next day, the sequence of the bouquets that succeed one another from hour to hour will be different. The eye is entertained by new surprises as it seeks out the measure of time between buds and corollas. Telling the time is completed by a minute display, visible in a window on the side of the case.
BEJEWELED GARDEN
The scenery is presented inside a 38mm case in white or rose gold. The Lady Arpels Heures Florales evokes summer in gentle blue and green shades, with leaves and flowers offering a delicate contrast with the background in white mother-of-pearl. The Lady Arpels Heures Florales Ceresier revisits the same design in a springlike tableau. Ethereal blue butterflies – emblematic of Van Cleef & Arpels – flutter between the pink and red corollas, accentuating the dial’s relief effects. On each dial, 226 elements or more are intricately brought together at the Watchmaking Workshops in Geneva. Petals and butterflies in miniature painting, branches in sculpted gold and clouds in sculpted mother-of-pearl are enhanced by flawless stone setting, with white and yellow diamonds sparkling alongside one another. The gold back of the case is engraved to echo the dial, while the movement’s oscillating weight – in guilloché gold and miniature painting – is visible beneath a sapphire glass, itself engraved and enamelled with a winged creature, a dragonfly or butterfly. Time thus flows to the rhythm of nature in the garden of Van Cleef & Arpels.

HUES OF BLUES
Embracing the essence of blue and leather, Hermès Beauty’s latest collection brings together lipsticks, eyeshadows and nail enamels for the first time.
The Autumn and Winter 2024 Limited Edition Collection from Hermès Beauty brings together Rouge Hermès lipsticks, Ombres d’Hermès eyeshadows and Les Mains Hermès nail enamels, unified by a striking theme of blue and leather-inspired hues. This marks the first time the brand has interwoven these product lines into a single story, capturing the mood of late autumn transitioning to winter through a sensory exploration of intense, varied blues.
The Rouge Hermès lipstick trio, designed by Pierre Hardy, features cases in subtle natural and botanical colours, each accented by a distinct shade of blue – Bleu Lagon, Bleu Abysse or Bleu Tempête. This season’s collection also introduces an ultra-matte finish, lending a leather-like texture to the lipsticks. The shades range from Beige Glacé, a soft, coppery beige, to Beige Doblis, a warm, clay-inspired tone and Rouge Nappa, a red that leaves a delicate, sheer tint. Creative Director Gregoris Pyrpylis explains that the
varied finishes of transparent, matte and sheer matte are intended to create different intensities for a versatile transition between seasons.
For the eyes, the Ombres d’Hermès palette combines matte, satin and shimmer eyeshadows in a refined permabrass (a gold-coloured metal that has a matte finish) case with the emblematic design of Hermès ex-libris. The palette, named Ombres Minérales, includes a striking cobalt blue alongside soft khaki and sun-kissed brown with a glimmer of gold. This composition draws on the depths of the ocean and natural earth tones, aligning with the brand’s signature materials and colours.
Les Mains Hermès nail enamels come in two shades: Bleu Agate, a deep, mineral blue, and Vert Bronze, a muted khaki. Both shades are inspired by the maison’s leather colours and are crafted with a formula of 71% natural ingredients. The lipsticks and eyeshadows are refillable with any other colours from their respective permanent collections.

HCROWNING GLORY
Hair in crisis? Bushra Hakim uncovers expert tips for turning things around.
air is one of the most defining features of our appearance. It’s not just strands of keratin growing from our head, but a huge part of who we are. And when hair starts to lose its shine, strength or volume, it can take a toll on our confidence. Be it persistent dryness, thinning or breakage, these concerns often need professional aid. To help us learn how to look after our crowning glory, we sought the advice of trichologist Daiane Alves Dos Santos, who specialises in scalp and hair health.
THE ROOT CAUSE
“Think of the scalp as an extension of the skin on your face,” Daiane explains. Much like the facial skin, the scalp requires cleansing, hydration and nourishment. Neglecting it can lead to dryness, oiliness or conditions like dandruff and hair thinning. Scalp health directly influences the quality of hair growth; if the follicles are malnourished, the hair strands are likely to be brittle and break easily. To ensure your scalp gets the care it needs, she suggests regular exfoliation to clear build-up from styling products,
dead skin and environmental pollutants. Massaging your head with natural oils like rosemary or jojoba not only hydrates but also stimulates blood circulation, which is essential for healthy follicles. She also suggests using shampoo and treatments formulated to address particular scalp issues, whether it be dandruff, sensitivity or an overproduction of sebum.
INGREDIENTS MATTER
Navigating the world of hair care products can be overwhelming, but knowing which ingredients to embrace and avoid is crucial. According to Daiane, certain component ingredients can do more harm than good. Sulphates can strip the hair of natural oils, leaving it dry and vulnerable to damage. Parabens, often used as preservatives, may disrupt hormones, while silicones create a coating on the hair shaft that leads to build-up over time. Other ingredients to avoid are mineral oil, which can suffocate the scalp, and formaldehyde (a preservative) found in some treatments, a common irritant. Instead, she suggests looking for products enriched with nourishing components like natural oils such as argan oil, shea butter and panthenol (vitamin B5), which hydrate and repair hair. Aloe vera and chamomile soothe the scalp, while proteins strengthen damaged fibres. Hydrators like vegetable glycerine and hyaluronic acid help retain moisture, adding shine and softness to the hair.
WEATHER WOES
Living in the Middle East comes with its own set of challenges. High humidity, intense sun exposure and desalinated water can wreak havoc on hair, making it frizzy, brittle and prone to breakage. It’s important to adapt your hair care routine to suit these conditions. “UV rays don’t just damage the skin; they also degrade the protein in your hair, causing it to lose strength and shine,” Daiane explains. She recommends using leave-in products with UV protection, as well as hats or scarves for added shielding. For combating humidity, anti-frizz serums and hydrating masks are lifesavers, helping to seal the hair cuticle and lock in moisture. Water quality also plays a major role in hair health. The heavy minerals in desalinated or hard water can dry out your hair and leave it feeling rough. Installing a shower filter or using clarifying treatments once a week can help minimise the damage.
NEW FRENCH YOUR
IN THE HEART OF WEST BAY!
Indulge in the signature Entrecôte Steak, expertly prepared and paired with golden fries and a fresh salad, or savor the casual delight of the Baguette de L’Entrecôte, a Parisian-inspired treat that’s perfect for any occasion.
SALON SOLUTIONS
Salon treatments like keratin smoothing, hair botox and sealing promise sleek, frizz-free locks, but Daiane warns against over-relying on these quick fixes. “These treatments often use chemicals that alter the hair’s natural structure, leaving it more vulnerable in the long term,” she warns. For instance, keratin smoothing requires high temperatures and formaldehydereleasing agents that can weaken bonds in the hair. Similarly, hair botox treatments, while marketed as restorative, often rely on straightening chemicals that can be damaging with repeated use.
SEEKING PROFESSIONAL HELP
Knowing when to seek professional advice is vital for maintaining healthy hair. Daiane points to signs like excessive hair loss, persistent dryness, brittle strands and scalp irritation. If home remedies fail to deliver results, it’s time to consult a specialist. “Hair loss and thinning are often caused by factors such as genetics, nutritional deficiencies or environmental stress,” she explains. Specialists can provide accurate diagnoses and tailored solutions to address these issues effectively. Treatments like mesotherapy and microneedling improve blood flow and nutrient absorption in the scalp, promoting stronger, healthier hair. Similarly, low-level laser therapy stimulates follicles to encourage regrowth, making it an effective option for chronic or genetic hair loss. She also emphasises personalised nutrition plans that correct deficiencies in essential nutrients such as iron, zinc and biotin. These approaches, combined with scalp detoxification and regular professional monitoring, ensure long-term success, especially in challenging climates.
“The earlier the intervention, the faster and more effective the treatment will be, allowing you to recover the health of your hair and scalp,” Daiane concludes.

Elements Of BLISS
A journey to renewal was what Liz O’Reilly discovered on a visit to Anjana Spa at Rixos Gulf Hotel Doha.
After 48 frantic hours filled with meetings and events, I was more than ready to relax and be pampered when I arrived at Anjana Spa. And, right from the start, I knew I had come to the right place. Spa Director Sarah immediately put me at ease with a refreshing antioxidant rich hibiscus juice to help reduce blood pressure and blood sugar levels and a very welcome moist towel provided welcome relief from the heat of the day.
Sarah introduced the therapists for my personalised journey – Octavia, who would perform a traditional Balinese massage, and Yulia, for the specialised Hammam ritual and facial – before conducting a detailed questionnaire to assess my needs and help tailor my journey. Her astute questions gave me a feeling of confidence and assurance that I would be in very professional hands.
The spa area itself is geared to luxurious tranquillity with grounding circles in the décor alongside muted pale hues, natural textures, serene music and subdued lighting inviting visitors to ‘leave your world behind’. Indeed, Sarah told me that the Hammam, my first treatment of the day, was designed to fly me to Morocco, her beloved home country.
BLACK SOAP AND HEAT
My consultation finished, smiling Yulia led me to the impressive Hammam where the traditional large marble slab awaited surrounded by wall seating and a sink where water was running constantly. Red and pink lights add atmosphere and the room is heated to around 60-70º Celsius, which is initially a bit of a shock to the system. But Yulia offered the option for the door to stay open as I acclimatised before dousing me with warm water
and getting to work with the traditional Moroccan black soap. With firm but gentle strokes, she lathered my skin to clean off any surface impurities before applying a henna scrub for deep cleaning and skin softening. She then asked me to lie on the heated marble slab and used a Kessa mitt for a vigorous scrub to exfoliate, removing the dead skin cells accumulated over a summer of, perhaps, too much sun and sea salt.
Next came a full-body mask of Ghassoul clay, which is known for drawing out deep-seated dirt and toxins and while this set, Yulia turned her attention to my hair, gently massaging my scalp before shampooing and applying an olive hair mask.
After rinsing off the body mask, she applied a final wash of Ghassoul mixed with coffee and lemon to moisturise and seal my skin leaving my whole body feeling deeply cleansed and my skin silky soft and glowing, which is, amazingly, still the case several days later.
Throughout this treatment, Yulia constantly checked that I was OK with the heat, she encouraged me to drink water and afterwards suggested that I should take advantage of the relaxation area for some refreshing ginger tea before moving on to the massage.
HEALING HANDS
Soon, it was time to head to one of the treatment rooms, passing numerous air purifying salt lamps along the way. The pale colours and candlelight of the massage room were definitely conducive to relaxation and Octa, as my therapist is known, began by ringing a sound bowl, the deep, resonant vibration reaching my inner sound sensors and triggering a feeling of immense calmness.
Outside in the reception area, I had noticed a beautiful display of all the elements used in the massage oils and, when given the choice, I selected lemongrass from Morocco, which Octa explained would be beneficial for muscle stiffness – the perfect complement to the traditional Balinese massage which is a full-body, deep-tissue treatment using a combination of acupressure, reflexology, gentle stretches and aromatherapy.
Octa’s expert hands kneaded, rolled, stroked and pressed across my body until I honestly felt ready to dissolve. Her strokes were assured and the nagging ache in my neck soon took a back seat to a sense of total, and very grateful, release.
Part of me wished this massage could go on indefinitely but I was also ready for the next experience, the express facial, which ended up being my favourite aspect of the afternoon.
FACE VALUE
Yulia returned and introduced me to the product range she would be using – the iconic French brand Biologique Recherche, which is known for its personalised approach to skincare often using pure, raw active ingredients. In my case, after a close examination with a bright light, I was very happy to hear she would be opting for anti-ageing benefits to regenerate my tired complexion.
First, my minimal make-up was removed and my face thoroughly cleansed using the Lait VIP O2, a very gentle, protective milk with oxygenating complex that was effective without being drying. This was followed by a soothing micellar lotion to tone – in both these options, Yulia had taken account of the dryness and sensitivity of my skin, ensuring I didn’t experience any of the tightness often associated with this stage of facial treatments.
Then came the science part. My face was first covered in the ISO – Placenta Sérum Authentique with its unique formula and the active ingredient Biomimetic placenta, which mimics the composition of human placenta to provide the skin with all the elements it needs to regenerate.
Yulia gently massaged the serum into my skin with incredibly soothing, butterfly-like movements giving it time to be fully absorbed before applying the next step, Extraits Tissulaires Sérum Authentique, a protective instant moisturiser designed to strengthen the hydrolipidic barrier, which prevents moisture loss. Another gentle massage encouraged full absorption and I could feel my skin drinking in the goodness as if regenerating beneath Yulia’s expert touch.
The final step was a liberal application of cool, rich Crème VIP O2, an oxygenating and anti-pollution cream formatted to capture polluting agents on the epidermis and protect from oxidative stress restoring radiance and brightness.
I must admit that, written down, these claims do seem somewhat fantastic but I can only speak to the evidence in the mirror. At the end of my facial, my skin looked and felt better than it has in a long, long time and I have become an enthusiastic Biologique Recherche convert.
IN THE END
At the end of a full afternoon of treatments, I can honestly say I felt renewed and had found my bliss. A few hours of ‘leaving the world behind’ coupled with the tranquillity of Anjana Spa and the talent and professionalism of the therapists was exactly what I needed and I can’t wait to return.

TALENT COMBINE
Extreme indulgence and some wonderful sweet treats were on the menu when Liz O’Reilly paid a visit to Raffles Spa & Wellness.
Arriving at Raffles Doha, if you haven’t visited before, is quite an experience. You enter through one of the most extraordinary hotel lobby areas I’ve ever seen. Marble floors abut intricately carved arches while above, a dazzling kaleidoscope, comprised of 974 screens mesmerises, creating an atmosphere of elegance and sophistication.
No surprise then that Raffles Spa & Wellness is also something else, a really incredibly special space. Dark wooden floors are flanked by textured off-white walls with subtle gold accents. The reception area invites you to experience tranquillity with its cream leather seating and tasteful displays of the top-of-the-range products used in the treatments, such as Dr Burgener Switzerland, marocMaroc, Subtle Energies and Bastien Gonzalez. Raffles Spa & Wellness brings an innovative and unique spa-within-spa concept where treatments are carried out in the privacy of individual suites. There are five spa suites, each with its own outdoor pool, Jacuzzi, steam room, Hammam, sauna, and dedicated treatment and relaxation spaces. Complementing these are four fitness suites, equipped with private amenities including a sauna, steam room and fitness area.
Before long, my therapist, Made, led me to my own private suite complete
with personal gym, Jacuzzi pool, steam room and sauna as well as a luxurious treatment room and, of course, comfortable relaxation beds –true to the opulence of this place, nothing is done by halves.
After a quick tour, I changed into a Raffles robe and, as I enjoyed a welcome drink that combined the delicious flavours of rose, mint and apple vinegar and refreshed myself with a cool towel bearing orange essence, Made prepared me for the foot ritual – which begins every treatment at Raffles Spa. Immersing my tired feet in a brass bowl of warm water with floating rose petals, she began with the Subtle Energies Rasayana Detox Scrub, which contains wild turmeric and Tulasi (a potent active that is a known detox agent, antioxidant and adaptogen) to remove impurities, along with peppermint, eucalyptus and clove.
My feet were then wrapped in a soft, fluffy towel and treated to Rasanaya Detox Body Lotion which left them feeling soft and refreshed and me feeling thoroughly spoilt.
It was time for my Total Bliss Massage and I gladly settled myself onto the comfortable treatment bed as Made explained that she would be using a Subtle Energies Blissful Sleep Massage Blend containing Mogra Queen of Jasmine oil along with frankincense and kewda.
Kewda is known as the dream oil for its relaxing properties and is also antioxidant and anti-inflammatory while both mogra and frankincense are recognised for their anti-ageing benefits, so this was the perfect blend for me.
Made applied a thin layer of the oil beginning at my feet with long, assured strokes upwards towards my heart, then moved to my arms rubbing downwards, again towards my heart. Her studied movements were the work of a true professional without any unnecessary chatter allowing me to fully submit to the wonderful scents of the oils and the overall feeling of total relaxation.
She had previously inquired if there were any areas requiring particular attention and, as always, with a job that involves a lot of screen and phone time, I highlighted my neck and shoulders. Here, her pressure increased slightly but without ever losing the gentle touch for which this massage style is known. With circular movements and soft probing, I was amazed at how she managed to relieve so much pressure without any of the usual pain!
Honestly, an hour passed all too quickly, I could easily have laid there for much longer drifting into a gentle slumber (and, true to the oils’ promise, I did indeed sleep like a baby later that night). But all good things must come to an end and, with my skin smelling fabulous and feeling lusciously soft and not at all greasy thanks to the easy absorption of the oil, it was time to don my robe once again and head to the relaxation area. I had just stretched out on the amazingly spacious bed, thinking ‘things really don’t get much better than this’ and intending a moment of quiet reflection, when Made and her colleague returned bearing a magnificent afternoon tea, served on a stand-shaped like the two swords of the iconic Katara Towers, in which Raffles Doha is situated.
Finding myself immediately rather hungry (pampering is hard work, you know), I tucked in beginning with delicate mini salmon mousse sandwiches, complete with thinly sliced cucumber, of course, and followed these with traditional Qatari bites, which were extremely flavoursome. I must admit though that my eyes lit up at the sight of the dessert selection, which boasted everything from chocolate cake to delicately iced choux pastries and even a delightful rose-flavoured milk pudding, presented in the shape of a rose, which was every bit as good as it looked.
I almost didn’t have space for the fruit scones, served with the traditional clotted cream and jam – but to leave them untouched would have been sinful and they were a true taste of home in every mouthful, fluffy and light, a testimony to the pastry chef’s art.
And then, it really was time to leave and I bid my farewells with a promise to return. Raffles Spa & Wellness is everything you could want in a retreat, a tranquil but super luxurious space in which to pass a few hours indulging in some of the best treatments around performed by staff who are as welcoming as they are talented.

MADE FOR TAKING A CHANCE ON THE UNEXPECTED
WHIMSICAL JEWELS
Roberto Coin pays homage to love and nature in delicate and feminine creations.
The Roberto Coin brand was born in 1996 and named after its designer. The founder, driven by his love for the world of art and fashion, left behind his hotelier career to embrace the jewellery universe. The creations reflect Roberto Coin’s imagination, creativity and aesthetic sensitivity, which take shape through the skilled hands of renowned Italian jewellery artisans. They bring to life the brand’s romantic and borderless designs that Roberto Coin is widely known for.
Love Story
The elegant Love in Verona collection is part of an ongoing thread that connects Roberto Coin’s jewellery to Italy’s most iconic cities. The various pieces display a minimal and contemporary look yet hold a soul as ancient as eternal love. Verona has long been regarded as the city of lovers, especially as it set the stage for one of literature’s most famous love stories, Romeo and Juliet
The jewels in the collection are made with three colours of gold, in polished and satin finishes, to wear together. The design reintroduces the four-petal diamond flower that has been the centre of other lines. The constant repetition of the flower over the entire surface of the jewels is an aesthetic evocation of the architectural structure of the Arena of Verona, one of the city’s emblems. In a collection rich in symbols, Roberto Coin has chosen to express his craftsmanship with a strongly contemporary, minimal look. The gold is worked to obtain an ultra-glossy effect, and a special alloy is used to make it highly resistant.
Flower Power
The Princess Flower line belongs to the creative bouquet of the Princess family of collections. The flower made of small diamonds that decorate other Princess jewels is the focal point of each piece – a natural evolution for the ornamental flower to grow until it bloomed. The corolla displays all its nuances, which are made of gold and precious stones. The characteristic twisted wire detail is used in the internal structure of the pieces to create a three-dimensional frame that holds the flower. The external part of the flower and the internal structure are created with 3D technology to guarantee the perfect proportions of the elements. Then, skilled craftsmen assemble the jewels, one by one, flower after flower. This special production process makes every flower in the collection the perfect result of balance and care, just like flowers in nature. @roberto_coin

WHEN TALENT MEETS SUPPORT
This year’s FTA (Fashion Trust Arabia) 2024 Prize happened in Marrakech and the OHLALA team was there to cover the event, which celebrates fashion and talent in the region.
atar and the fashion universe have a close relationship. The country has become a reference for the field in the region in recent years, with many high-end brands landing on its shores, exclusive collections available only here and exhibitions centred around the theme.
However, one initiative that stands out is Fashion Trust Arabia (FTA), a non-profit organisation focused on scouting, funding and nurturing design talent across the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) region. Launched in 2018, following the success of Fashion Trust UK, it is under the patronage of HH Sheikha Moza bint Nasser as honorary chair, with co-chairs HE Sheikha Al-Mayassa bint Hamad Al-Thani and Tania Fares. One of the main missions of this enterprise is to bring global awareness to the region’s fast-growing creative industry and give a platform for its talents. FTA provides financial awards and strategic, world-class industry mentorship opportunities for MENA region design talents who are ready for the international market.
This year, the sixth annual edition of the FTA 2024 Prize (at which the winners are announced), happened at the iconic El Badi Palace in Marrakech, Morocco, as part of the Qatar-Morocco 2024 Year of Culture. This partnership is a way of nurturing lasting connections between diverse communities through cultural exchanges and collaborations. OHLALA was invited to be part of this exciting event and was there to witness this gala night.
The stylish affair brought together international and regional celebrities, press and industry leaders. HE Sheikha Al-Mayassa and Tania Fares welcomed guests, expressing their commitment to supporting the next generation of designers. The evening was hosted by American actress Angela Bassett and Egyptian actor Ahmad Helmy. Some of the names attending were Alton Mason, Aya Nakamura, Balqees Fathi, Carla Bruni Sarkozy, Da’vine Joy Randolph, Evan Ross, Farida Khelfa, Halima Haden, Hande Erçel, Helena Christensen, Imaan Ammam, Jameela Jamil, James Blake, Jodie Turner-Smith, Isabelle Huppert, Lucien Laviscount, Nadine Njeim, Natalia Vodianova, Nicky Hilton, Paloma Elssesser, Paris Jackson, Precious Lee, Richard E. Grant, Taraji P Henson and Yasmine Sabri. The leading entertainment was the British singer and songwriter Sophie EllisBextor performing her biggest hits.
The seven winners were chosen by the FTA Jury, consisting of industry experts, from the 24 designer finalists. They showcased their collections and competed in the following categories: Ready-to-Wear, Eveningwear, Accessories, Jewelry, the Franca Sozzani Debut Talent Award, the Guest Country Award (in partnership with Spain), and the newly launched Fashion Tech Award. Each winner received a cash prize ranging from USD100,000 to USD200,000, as well as a personalised, one-year mentorship programme provided by FTA’s Retail Partners and a global network of industry professionals. This comprehensive support covers vital topics in fashion business development, including sustainability, through mentorship from Maison De Mode. Additionally, the winners of the Ready-to-Wear, Eveningwear, Accessories and Jewelry categories will have their collections carried at Harrods internationally and Ounass in the MENA region.
Egyptian designer Nadine Mosallam clinched the Ready-to-Wear category with her innovative, playful, culturally inspired designs.
Qatar’s Yasmin Mansour took the Evening Wear Prize with her elegant, original concept and said at the event: “This is my first time visiting Marrakech as part of the Qatar-Morocco 2024 Year of Culture events, and it was an honour to receive the award from Princess Lalla Hasnaa – it was a special moment. Everything in this city is special. I want to thank Qatar and Her Excellency Sheikha Al Mayassa for their constant support and encouragement, not just for me but for all creatives in Qatar and the Arab world. I’m also happy to show the public my work that I completed in Doha, this was a message I’ve been working on for a while, and finally we see ‘Made in Qatar’ within this fashion category.”
Meanwhile, Egyptian designer Reem Hamed’s footwear brand RAMLA won in the Accessories category with a delightful mix of traditional and modern design.
Saudi brand A Piece Of Art (APOA), led by Noura Abdulaziz Al Saud, Sara Naif Al Saud and Mashael Khalid Al Saud, claimed pride of place in the jewellery category.
The Franca Sozzani Debut Talent Award went to Palestinian-Jordanian designer Sylwia Nazzal, of Nazzal Studio, for her remarkable designs rooted in Palestinian heritage. At the event, she told us: “I am so grateful to win the Debut Talent prize. It’s such an honour, especially that it’s been a year since October [2023] (when the tensions in the Palestine region started), and we owe [it to Palestine] to do more and this is just a step closer to where we need to go.”
The Fashion in Tech Award was clinched by Jordanian multidisciplinary designer and digital fabricator Batoul Al-Rashdan of Studio B.O.R for her creative use of technology and bio-based materials.
Finally, Spanish label Acromatyx, run by Francisco Barroso and Javier Garcia, received the Guest Country Award for their innovative creations.
SPECIAL CREATIONS
A collection commissioned by Qatar’s Years of Culture initiative from jewellery designer Miryam Labiad, founder of Mimia LeBlanc Jewelry, was showcased during the FTA 2024 Prize. She was asked to design a bespoke collection to celebrate the Qatar-Morocco 2024 Year of Culture. Miryam took inspiration from the jewellery created by the Amazigh (also known as Berber), indigenous populations of the Maghreb region of North Africa, as well as used some Andalusian influences to develop the commissioned pieces.
The capsule is now featured at Qatar Museums’ Museum of Islamic Art alongside the exhibition Splendours of the Atlas: A Voyage Through Morocco’s Heritage, available until March 8, 2025.
One of the pieces is a statement pendant with natural lapis lazuli, grey diamonds, cabochon rubies and a mother-of-pearl inlay, which draws inspiration from Morocco’s Royal Silver Jewelry Collection. Another displays the Amazigh’s tradition of using coins as adornment and features a rare Moroccan coin depicting his late Majesty Mohamed V, the grandfather of the current King Mohammed VI. A third piece resembles an ancient Moroccan necklace (a Serdouk), with a phoenix with rubies, emeralds, diamonds and white mother-of-pearl, set in frosted yellow gold.
“It has been an enormous honour to spend time with peerless examples of Amazigh and traditional Moroccan jewellery and to be inspired by them to design these one-of-a-kind pieces that revel in the rich history of Moroccan jewellery-making. I look forward to seeing my works displayed among the objects that inspired them,” said the designer.
It is important to mention that Qatar’s Years of Culture initiative is a driving force to promote cultural partnerships between Qatar and other nations. It fosters respect and understanding among diverse cultures and brings people together.

‘TIS THE SEASON
For those who love winter but want a side of adventure – these escapes blend lazy mornings with unexpected thrills, all wrapped in magic.
Let’s be honest: winter is for unapologetic lounging, where pyjamas are practically a uniform and hot chocolate becomes a meal. But there’s also that nagging itch to explore something new – without leaving behind the plush robes and lazy mornings. Imagine a getaway where you can roll out of bed straight into a world that’s both snug and spectacular. Picture icy forests just begging for an easy wander, outdoor hot tubs where you can soak while the snow falls and places where the most strenuous activity is choosing between the best of warm drinks. This is winter adventuring but on your terms – relaxed, magical and with just enough excitement to keep you feeling alive.
COURCHEVEL, FRANCE
High up in the Alps, Courchevel is the crème de la crème of ski destinations, but there’s much more to it than pristine slopes. For those craving an elevated alpine retreat, Aman Le Mélézin promises an enchanting getaway with its ski-in, ski-out access to the Bellecôte piste. This luxurious haven combines the charm of a French château with Aman’s Asian-inspired elegance and newly renovated rooms, some with private terraces, make it feel like an intimate winter cocoon. Foodies will fall for Nama, the Japanese restaurant serving sashimi on a terrace overlooking the piste and an après-ski treat at the Fireside Delights Party, featuring homemade melted chocolate and caviar-topped waffles. Beyond the culinary adventures, the two-story spa offers rejuvenation through classic massages, tai chi and special wellness therapies, letting you bask in mountainous tranquillity.
HARBIN, CHINA
Harbin may not be as famous as other Asian cities, but come the frigid temperatures and it transforms into a dazzling icy wonderland that rivals the best of them. Known for its annual Ice and Snow Festival, this is where the cold season gets an artistic makeover. You will find yourself walking amongst massive sculptures of dragons, palaces and mythical creatures, all carved out of ice and illuminated in neon colours. This festival is a celebration of both Chinese culture and the art of ice sculpting, with artists from around the globe contributing to the magical displays. Besides the festival, the city’s Russian-influenced architecture and fabulous cuisine make it a fascinating place to explore. Warm up with bowls of hearty dongbei dishes, sip on hot drinks or try the famous ice pops, enjoyed even in sub-zero temperatures. There’s something about the city’s brisk cold air and shimmering ice sculptures that turn the season into a spellbinding frosty fantasy.
HOKKAIDO, JAPAN
For a winter experience rooted in both adventure and relaxation, Hokkaido is Japan’s snow-laden paradise. Known for its powdery snow, this northern island is a dream for skiers and snowboarders alike, but it has lots of other things one can do. The town of Otaru, with its lantern-lit canals and charming old streets, becomes a beautiful winter wonderland, while the Sapporo Snow Festival astounds with intricate ice sculptures and lively events. After a day on the slopes or exploring Hokkaido’s snowy landscapes, head to one of the island’s famous onsen or hot spring baths, to soak away the cold. Imagine the contrast of steaming water against the cool, snowy air – Hokkaido has truly mastered the art of relaxation. Don’t miss a chance to try their delicacies, from fresh seafood to the local favourite, miso ramen. It’s an escape that balances the thrill of the outdoors with moments of pure, warm bliss.
ROVANIEMI, FINLAND
Welcome to the official home of Santa Claus! In Rovaniemi, Finland, December takes on a festive, almost magical quality that’s perfect for both kids and adults who still believe in a little festive magic. Visit Santa’s Village to send postcards with a special North Pole postmark, meet reindeer and even go dog sledding with a team of huskies eager to show you the beauty of Lapland. But Rovaniemi isn’t just for festive fans – it’s also a prime spot to witness the Northern Lights. With luck, you’ll catch this natural phenomenon dancing across the sky in hues of green and purple, lighting up the snowy forests in an ethereal glow. Warm up in a glass igloo or traditional Finnish cabin after a day exploring snowy trails and let the stillness of the Arctic night wrap around you.
VIENNA, AUSTRIA
Vienna, in the colder months, is a city dressed to impress. With festive markets, candle-lit cafés and streets strung with twinkling lights, you feel like you’re in a holiday rom-com. The season kicks off with a glow as Vienna’s iconic festive markets open, filling the air with the scent of mulled grape, roasted chestnuts and freshly baked gingerbread. From the Art Advent on Karlsplatz to the cosy festive setting at the University Campus, each market has its own charm that blends local crafts, festive foods and live entertainment. The city’s UNESCO-recognised coffee culture is perfect, where cosy cafés offer steaming cups of coffee alongside decadent pastries like the Sachertorte. And for those who enjoy skating, rinks pop up around the city, including the expansive Eislaufverein and the Vienna Ice Dream at Rathausplatz. For a once-in-a-lifetime experience, attend one of the winter balls and waltz the night away in historic settings like the Vienna State Opera.
DAMARALAND, NAMIBIA
Swap snow for sand dunes, and you’ll find yourself in Namibia’s Damaraland, an otherworldly winter destination unlike any other. As the end of the year brings milder weather, it’s the perfect time to explore Namibia’s stunning landscapes, rich wildlife and ancient rock art. Imagine standing at the base of massive red rock formations or watching elephants wander through the desert, their tracks fading into the vast, open terrain. With its warm days and crisp nights, it’s ideal for trekking, stargazing and soaking in some of Africa’s most spectacular sunsets. Stay in eco-lodges that blend seamlessly into the landscape, and let local guides introduce you to the flora and fauna that have adapted to this extraordinary environment. It’s a reminder of how winter can be a season of discovery, even in the warmth of the African desert.
A FUSION OF EXCEPTIONAL FLAVOURS
The best of East and West was in store for Liz O’Reilly on a recent visit to Novikov.
Walking into Novikov Restaurant & Beach Club, at The St. Regis Doha, I was immediately struck by the abundance of greenery, giving the place an outsidein feel, with plants arranged around the walls and cascading from the ceiling. The lighting is also a distinct feature with cocoon-like, mesh lanterns casting a subdued but welcoming glow as they hang from an interesting wagon wheel-like structure above.
With the return of balmy desert evenings, we chose, like many others, to enjoy the buzzing al fresco dining area where laughter drifted from neighbouring tables and contemporary music added to the atmosphere.
On the outside terrace, a bamboo-panelled, pagoda-style roof, decked with round wicker lights, spoke of Novikov’s origins and General Manager Alessandro Zavarise explained how the concept was born in London’s Mayfair, in 2011. The brainchild of Russian hospitality veteran Arkady Novikov, whose vision was to have two restaurants in a single venue – one serving Mediterranean cuisine, the other focussing on a pan-Asian menu. Over time, guests in one would request items from the other and Novikov’s international outlets now offer the best of both worlds – which we discovered in Qatar with a menu boasting the likes of beef carpaccio with rocket and truffle alongside yellowtail coriander, from the Raw Bar, or classic Caesar Salad alongside a selection of dim sum and more.
CULINARY COMBINATIONS
We began our feast with Wagyu tacos served with guacamole and chipotle. The shells of the crispy, mini tacos perfectly complemented the melting beef within, the creaminess of the avocado and the smoky heat of the chipotle drawing out the excellent succulence and flavour of the meat.
Next to the table was burrata with ripe tomatoes, the quintessential Italian flavour of oregano and baby basil leaves all coated in super-high-quality extra virgin olive oil with a sprinkling of Maldon salt. Breaking through the solid outer casing of the cheese, I watched in delight as the creamy inner ran onto the plate before plunging my fork into one of the sweet, pepper-flecked tomatoes and scooping up the velvety goodness. Superb.
As we waited for our next delicious morsel, Alessandro served us one of Novikov’s signature mocktails containing passionfruit, dragon fruit, coconut water and alcohol-free gin. Pretty, pink and decidedly moreish, it was a very welcome taste break between courses.
Arancini are a popular Italian street food and a great favourite of mine, so I was delighted to see these bite-sized breaded risotto spheres heading towards us. But, like with so much else on the menu, these are not just any arancini, they’re Novikov arancini, which means they come with truffle and wasabi mayonnaise to draw out the crunchiness of the outer coating and the creamy, oozing centre. The truffle lent a sweet smokiness to the cheese adding that certain something to an already fabulous dish.
The rare fungi made another appearance in the Hamachi Yuzu Truffle Roll, a sushi roll with soya mayo, avocado, spring onions and truffle dressing. I’d requested minimal rice, the better to fully appreciate the superbly tasty filling combination which, with the tiniest dab of wasabi to accompany the rich, slightly sour fish, made for the perfect mix.
The Seared Salmon Avocado Roll that arrived alongside was equally impressive, though we decided to take the fish raw rather than cooked to make the most of the creaminess that comes from its high fat content. Served with soya, mirin, avocado and sesame seeds, the sweetness of the mirin played on the nuttiness of the seeds to truly bring out the best in this luxurious, slightly citrusy fish.
SWEET SENSATIONS
Having seen the dessert menu, we decided to forego a proper main course so we could do full justice to the sweet offerings. And what a good decision this turned out to be.
Swathed in a cloud of seriously Instagrammable dry ice, a tray of goodies arrived at the table and we couldn’t wait to dive in.
The chocolate fondant cake, oozing and indulgent, and the sticky toffee pudding, with lush, sweet dates giving a nod to regional mores, were immediate hits at our table. I was also intrigued by the Macha Brûlée, which is something I’ve not tried before. The addition of green tea gives a pleasant, earthy bite to cut through the rich smoothness of the brûlée. Served alongside a generous helping of fresh fruit and indulgent, creamy dollops of vanilla and homemade Nutella ice cream, each sweet offering was a triumph. I have to say though, for me, the Mango Tiramisu was the star of the show. Since I don’t like coffee, I often feel slightly deprived when my friends are gleefully tucking into the traditional version. So, I took full advantage of the coffee-free option with its light but creamy mix of ladyfingers, mascarpone and deeply satisfying mango purée. A total triumph that I’d be happy to repeat.
Not surprisingly, we lingered over dessert with our teas and coffees as the terrace slowly emptied around us. Then, as we were ready to leave, Alessandro was back offering to show us the newly opened beach part of the beach club, which looks stunning – sun loungers, blue waters and amazing food, what more could you want?
It was the icing on the cake of our visit to an extraordinary venue where East meets West and offers the best of both worlds.

SPORTY AND SPACIOUS
OHLALA TEST-DROVE THE SECOND-GENERATION AUDI Q3, A COMFORTABLE COMPACT FAMILY SUV WITH PLENTY TO OFFER.
Tracing its roots back as far as 1899, the German automotive manufacturer Audi AG is a world-renowned brand loved for its high-performance vehicles, innovative approach to design and unwavering dedication to improving on previous offerings.
At OHLALA, we have had the privilege of test-driving numerous models from this beloved brand over the years. This month, thanks to the team at Audi Qatar, we got the opportunity to thoroughly inspect the new Audi Q3, a compact family SUV we took great pleasure in putting through its paces.
ATHLETIC EXTERIOR
As we approached the second-generation Q3, we were immediately struck by its sportier appearance. This model’s athletic prowess is partially due to the striking SingleFrame grille with an octagon design divided up by vertical bars. Further adding to the front end are the trapezoidal outer air inlets and the horizontal line running below the headlights across the front.
We appreciated the makeup of the narrow LED headlights that taper inwards in a wedge shape, along with the strong shoulder line that formally connects the symmetrical lighting graphics of the headlights to those at the rear.
The muscular wheel wells with contrasting wheel arch trims, housing 18inch aluminium wheels, emphasised the vehicle’s robust look. We admired the low roofline that ends in strong, evenly raked D pillars, endowing the Q3 with a sense of forward thrust even on the showroom floor.
Moving to the back end, we took in the attractive L-shaped taillights as well as the wide roof spoiler that flanks the rear window on either side. We liked how the diffuser inserts, with four ribs, round off the rear at the bottom, smartly integrating with the tailpipe design trim.
DYNAMIC INTERIOR
Once inside the cabin, we were instantly impressed by the internal architecture of the brand’s latest creation. A large panoramic sunroof allows for plenty of natural light, making it all the easier for us to complete our inspection. Audi has managed to merge the beauty of the materials and layout with the functionality of the in-car tech. A great example is how the dashboard effortlessly harmonises with the digital operating concept.
We loved the discreet manner in which the central MMI display is inserted in the high-gloss black surround. Sporting an octagonal shape, it echoes the motif of the SingleFrame and is bordered by a classy chrome strip. We also appreciated the manner in which all displays, buttons and controls are ergonomically positioned, with everything designed with the driver in mind.
“Audi has managed to merge the beauty of the materials and layout with the functionality of the in-car tech.”
The distinctly horizontal lines of the instrument panel give the interior an open and airy feel, whilst the robust look of the door panel reflects the strong SUV character of the new Q3.
Along with plenty of head, shoulder and leg room for all occupants, this family SUV houses the largest in-segment luggage compartment with a capacity of 530 litres, making it ideal for day-to-day use. This area can be increased up to 1,525 litres with adjustments to the rear seating and backrests.
OUTSTANDING TECH AND INFOTAINMENT
Audi has overhauled the operating and display concept in the secondgeneration Q3, eliminating all analogue instruments. These had been replaced in our standard model, featuring MMI radio plus, by a digital instrument cluster with a 10.25-inch screen diagonal, which we could operate via the multifunctional steering wheel.
The team at Audi Qatar informed us that MMI Radio Plus can be upgraded to the Audi virtual cockpit. This allows the customer to configure the operating system in many areas. In addition to the usual data, such as road and engine speed, it also displays information on music tracks and Audi Connect services.
Other great features of this digital instrument are the free-text search and voice control capabilities. We entered a navigation destination using free text on a virtual keypad when the vehicle was stationary, and we also used handwriting recognition. This resulted in a list of restaurant options appearing after entering just a few letters.
What proved even more useful was the new natural language voice control option that allowed us to use freely structured wording to locate a desired destination. After voicing a sentence like “I am hungry,” the system
responded by suggesting restaurants nearby. The dialogue manager can also ask questions, when necessary, allow for corrections, offer choices and defer to the speaker when interrupted. We have to admit we had a lot of fun with this feature.
We also discovered the Audi smartphone interface, which integrates the AMI, to establish contact with our iOS and Android mobile phones. This brought our Apple CarPlay and Android Auto environment onto the MMI display. We must also mention the Bang & Olufsen Premium Sound System with virtual 3D sound. It provided a fantastic audio experience. Its 15-speaker setup produces a total output of 680 watts. Four additional speakers in the dashboard, which use the reflections of the windshield, and one speaker per D pillar generate the 3D sound.
SATISFYING POWER AND PERFORMANCE
Once able to tear ourselves away from all the trimmings and tech of the interior, it was time to head to our performance testing site. En route, we acknowledged the smooth ride, feeling the responsive nature of the steering and braking systems.
The new Q3 comes with a range of TFSI engine choices. Our test-drive model was powered by the entry-level, 1.5-litre 35 TFSI petrol engine. Coupled with a manual six-speed transmission, this capable motor generated up to 150hp and 250Nm of torque. We were informed that this option is exclusively available with front-wheel drive.
Accelerating from 0-100km/h in a respectable 9.6 seconds and reaching a top speed of 211km/h, we found this more than adequate for a day-today family SUV. There are, however, more powerful options available if desired, all of which are refined and efficient four-cylinder turbo engines.
FIRST-CLASS DRIVER ASSISTANCE AND SAFETY
It came as no surprise that the Q3 is top of its class when it comes to safety and driver assistance features.
Amongst these are adaptive cruise control, traffic jam assist, active lane assist, park assist, cross traffic assist rear, emergency brake assist and active lane assist.
Audi has bundled the most important systems in the assistance package. Along with the adaptive cruise assist, it comprises camera-based traffic sign recognition, the parking system plus, the high-beam assist and the emergency assist. The latter detects, within system limits, whether the driver is inactive and accordingly provides a visual, acoustic and haptic warning. If this does not prompt a reaction from the driver, the system takes control of the Audi Q3 and automatically stops it in its own lane.
OUR VERDICT
Audi’s second-generation Q3 is an innovative, compact SUV that looks good, drives well and takes care of you and your loved ones when on the go.
For more information or to book a test drive of your own, please call Audi Qatar on 4445 2375.

BREAKING THE CYCLE
Ever wondered why you make New Year's resolutions and never follow them through? Here's how to tackle them without the drama.
As the clock strikes midnight on New Year's Eve, we are filled with hope, determination and often a list of resolutions. Whether it's getting fitter, eating healthier or learning a new skill, the beginning of the year feels like a fresh opportunity for change. But by January 2, that motivation can start to waver, especially when we make one misstep. Enter the ‘what-the-hell’ effect – a sneaky little trick our minds play on us. It starts innocently enough. You plan to hit the gym at 8am, but by 8.05am, you're still in bed. In a moment of frustration, you think, ‘Well, I missed my chance for today. I'll just try again tomorrow’, or worse, ‘I'll start next week’. The ‘what-the-hell’
effect leads us to believe that if we don't start at the perfect time, it's no longer worth starting at all.
But here's the thing: missing a deadline doesn't mean the entire day or goal is ruined. In fact, the opposite is true. The key to long-term success is consistency, not perfection. A missed morning workout doesn't mean the day is lost – it just indicates it's time to reset, take a deep breath and go for it in the next available moment.
So, let's ditch the all-or-nothing mentality. Instead of falling into the trap of giving up because of one hiccup, focus on progress, not perfection. When life throws you off track this year, don't let anything derail you. Get back up, refocus and keep going.
RESET, RELAX and REJUVENATE
As the heat of summer rises, we welcome guests to cool down in the most luxurious of surroundings, in our Fairmont Spa and Pillar.
Discover a range of blissful experiences designed to cool body, mind and spirit, plus enjoy a refreshing cold towel with every treatment booked.
