In celebration of the Lunar New Year, BIRKENSTOCK 1774 released a new collection for the Year of the Snake, a symbol of wisdom, elegance and transformation in Chinese culture. Reflecting these values, the collection features new variations of three iconic BIRKENSTOCK styles: Arizona, Florida and Tokio. Each design is reimagined with luxurious Italian leather and python embossing, with the Tokio model further enhanced by contrasting suede and python-embossed leather details, all lined in soft Nappa leather. The colour palette combines beige and red to highlight the snake’s patterns, while the signature anatomically shaped footbed is covered in black leather. Gold or silver buckles complete the design, with each pair crafted at BIRKENSTOCK’s German workshop.

THE BEAUTY OF COLD
Pasquale Bruni’s autumn and winter collections highlight the interplay of light and shadow with designs inspired by the beauty of the colder months.
Jewellery is often inspired by nature, and winter proves to be an outstanding muse. From the glow of moonlight on frost to the dark stillness of long nights, Pasquale Bruni’s second chapter in its autumn and winter collections reflects these contrasts with a blend of craftsmanship and thoughtful design. Using materials like moonstones, black onyx and diamonds, the pieces embody the serenity and strength of the season.
Petit Joli Lunaire
This capsule draws inspiration from the calmness of cold, with moonstones in shades of white and grey symbolising frost-kissed petals and black onyx reflecting the stillness of long nights. The Petit Joli Lunaire Sautoir, a versatile long necklace, features floral motifs crafted from these stones and can be styled to suit both casual and formal looks. The Petit Joli Lunaire Ring, with its single diamond leaf set in moonstone or onyx, is an ode to winter’s quiet elegance. The collection also includes bracelets and earrings that pair well for dayto-night transitions.
Petit Joli Bouquet Lunaire
Designed for those who love bold and dramatic jewellery, this highjewellery collection combines adularia moonstones, black onyx and diamonds with 18-carat rose gold. The Petit Joli Bouquet Lunaire Collier, a multi-tiered necklace, features cascading floral motifs that make it a striking choice for evening occasions. The Petit Joli Bouquet Lunaire Manchette, a bold cuff bracelet, mirrors the grandeur of the collier with its intricate design. Completing this celestial collection are Double-Layer Earrings with two rows of dropping floral motifs.
Giardini Segreti
Inspired by Milan’s hidden gardens, this collection offers a more subtle approach. Crafted in 18-carat rose gold and adorned with white and warm yellow-brown diamonds, the designs capture the delicate transformation of nature in winter. The Giardini Segreti Pinky Ring and Three Leaves Ring feature intricate details that evoke frosted foliage, making them ideal for everyday wear or layering with other collections. These subtle pieces are also perfect for pairing with larger statement jewellery.

MINIMALISM, MASTERED
Repossi shares its New Year vision with Serti Sur Vide’s floating diamonds and Antifer’s bold architectural lines.
Repossi’s New Year Campaign celebrates two of its iconic collections: Serti Sur Vide and Antifer. Known for their clean lines and architectural influences, these collections showcase the maison’s ability to combine contemporary design with expert craftsmanship. They also encapsulate its enduring vision of creating jewellery that is not only timeless but also forward-thinking.
The Serti Sur Vide collection is a testament to technical ingenuity and artistry. Translating to ‘set on the void’, this line features the maison’s iconic pear-shaped diamonds that appear to float, suspended in a near-invisible setting. The minimalist designs strip away the excess to focus solely on the purity and brilliance of the stones. Utilising Repossi’s unique Eiffel Tower setting, the stones – predominantly emeralds and white diamonds of exceptional quality – are positioned as if levitating, creating an almost ethereal effect. This technique not only enhances the gems' natural allure but also speaks volumes of the years of craftsmanship. The collection reinterprets classic jewellery pieces, such as the solitaire ring, with a modern twist.
Equally striking, the Antifer collection draws inspiration from contemporary art and architecture, two pillars of the brand’s design philosophy. Characterised by its sharp, angular lines and contrasting full and empty spaces, Antifer pieces exude harmony through simplicity. The collection’s minimalist aesthetic is underpinned by a rigorous dedication to traditional jewellery-making techniques. Each piece in the line is handcrafted in Italy, using the lost wax casting method, a process that allows for unmatched precision and finesse. The bold geometry of the designs is balanced by the delicate craftsmanship, with gold pins and flame welding ensuring the integrity of the sharp angles. The result is jewellery that is as daring as it is refined, proving that beauty often lies in simplicity.
Repossi collections are available at Saks Fifth Avenue. @saksme @repossi

FLOWERS OF THE NIGHT
Through Les Fleurs de Nuit, Chloé celebrates the hidden facets of familiar florals, revealing their enigmatic beauty in the quiet hours of the dark.
Chloé’s Atelier des Fleurs collection has always celebrated nature, bringing to life florals that are both unique and unexpected.
In the latest release, Les Fleurs de Nuit, the maison turns its attention to flowers that thrive under the cloak of darkness.
Housed in striking cobalt-blue bottles inspired by the night sky, this trio of fragrances captures the transformative beauty of orchid, orange blossom and tuberose as they bloom under moonlight. The bottle itself retains the iconic Atelier des Fleurs silhouette with its wavy glass design and beige detailed lid, hinting at Chloé’s heritage and founder Gaby Aghion’s Egyptian roots.
NUIT D’ORANGER
Drawing inspiration from Gaby Aghion’s Mediterranean heritage, in Nuit d’Oranger, perfumer Alex Lee highlights the duality of orange blossom. During the day, its fragrance is light and airy, but at night, it reveals a deeper, more sensual character. The composition begins with fresh, green notes of petitgrain and bergamot, leading to the honeyed opulence of orange blossom absolute. A woody accord of yerba mate and patchouli evokes the earthiness of the orange grove at nightfall, bringing a bold touch to the composition.
ORCHIDÉE DE MINUIT
Made by perfumers Mathieu Nardin and Cécile Matton, this fragrance explores the mysterious nature of the white orchid. It blooms once in its lifetime at night before retreating into the shadows and attracting pollinators that help vanilla pods grow. Capturing this rare moment, the scent opens with the flower’s soft floral notes that blend with the richness of clove. At its heart, jasmine and resin add depth, leading to a rich base of vanilla absolute, musk and patchouli. The vanilla transforms into something darker and more textured, reminiscent of its pod rather than its blossom.
TUBÉREUSE LAZULI
Rightly known as rajanigandha, ‘the fragrant one of the night’ in Hindi, this tuberose finds its most intoxicating expression in Tubéreuse Lazuli. Jean-Christophe Hérault captures the moment when twilight enhances the flower’s heady sweetness. With bergamot and pink pepper, Indian tuberose, paired with jasmine and osmanthus, forms a luminous bouquet, while white oud and creamy sandalwood add depth. The result is a fragrance as intoxicating and enchanting as a lapis-lazuli sky above a field of flowers.

Healthy LOOKING SKIN
Harnessing the power of high longevity science, the new Life Matrix Haute Rejuvenation Cream from La Prairie works on cellular information.
Back in 1931, at Clinique La Prairie, Dr Niehans, a long-time believer that longevity science was the key to unlocking the secret of eternal youth, made a breakthrough discovery: cellular therapy. With astonishing results, he worked on extending the healthspan of patients in a holistic way and elevated science to a unique art of living at full potential.
La Prairie’s new Life Matrix Haute Rejuvenation Cream encapsulates the alliance of expertise in longevity of Clinique La Prairie, the legendary Swiss longevity clinic, and La Prairie, the expert Swiss skincare house. The cream contains the new Exclusive Matrix Complex, a multidimensional molecular array of actives built by a highly concentrated Exclusive Cellular Complex and extracts of peony roots and calendula flowers. The components of this complex modulate the essential set of cellular information biomolecules to optimise cellular functionality and healthspan. Infused with this highly potent complex, Life Matrix Haute Rejuvenation resets cellular information to a younger state while supporting critical youth longevity pathways identified by the scientists of La Prairie.
The structure of the skin is supposed to be strengthened with an increased collagen content and the skin tissue becomes denser. Firmness, elasticity and skin volume improve, creating a measurable and perceivable replumping benefit. Life Matrix Haute Rejuvenation Cream intends to revitalise and resurface the skin with an increased rate of skin epidermal renewal, and skin resilience is boosted thanks to an elevated water content and a strengthened barrier. It also refines skin texture and reduces the appearance of wrinkles, giving a smooth, healthy-looking complexion. Over time, the result is revitalising skin from within, increasing collagen production, improving skin firmness and elasticity and amplifying skin youth longevity.

A PINCH OF BEAUTY
Salt, a kitchen essential, is now making its mark in skincare. Bushra Hakim finds out why this humble ingredient is getting so much love.
Salt has quietly made its way from the kitchen shelf to the beauty cabinet and for good reasons. Known for its mineralrich composition and versatile benefits, salt is no longer just a seasoning – it's a skincare saviour. Whether it's scrubbing away dullness, soothing sensitive skin or creating spa-like moments at home, this humble mineral is taking centre stage in beauty routines. To uncover the secrets of this versatile ingredient, we spoke to Fasi Deen, Director of Operations at Solty, a brand dedicated to high-quality salt-based products for a healthier lifestyle.
THE MANY FACES OF SALT
Salt isn't a one-size-fits-all ingredient; its type significantly impacts its benefits and applications. Each variety is known to offer unique properties that cater to different skincare needs:
Epsom Salt: “Epsom salt is renowned for its anti-inflammatory properties and relaxation-inducing capabilities,” explains Fasi. It hydrates the skin while potentially aiding in barrier repair, making it a favourite for therapeutic baths and body scrubs. Its soothing properties make it ideal for those seeking relaxation after a long day.
Dead Sea Salt: From the mineral-rich waters of the Dead Sea, this salt is prized for its ability to deeply hydrate and fortify the skin barrier. It reduces roughness and calms irritation, making it a go-to for dry or sensitive skin. It's often incorporated into therapeutic baths and skincare for its exceptional moisturising and soothing qualities.
Sea Salt: This is a natural exfoliant that helps slough off dead cells, revealing smoother, more radiant skin. Rich in minerals, it acts as a humectant, drawing moisture into the epidermis while also soothing conditions like psoriasis and eczema. Often found in scrubs, bath soaks and even hair products, sea salt is a versatile addition to regimes.
Himalayan Pink Salt: “Himalayan pink salt stands out among other natural salts due to its exceptional purity and mineral-rich composition, sourced from the pristine Khewra Salt Mine in Pakistan,” says Fasi. Rich in magnesium, potassium and calcium, it offers exfoliating, detoxifying and balancing properties. It helps maintain hydration and strengthens the natural skin barrier, making it a favourite in scrubs, bath products and facial treatments. Beyond exfoliation, its mineral richness promotes a radiant complexion, making it more than just a passing trend. Unlike harsher exfoliants, its fine granules ensure a smooth exfoliation process without irritation. Its detoxifying qualities also help draw out impurities, leaving the skin refreshed and balanced. With its growing popularity, it's no surprise that many beauty enthusiasts turn to Himalayan salt for luxury and effectiveness.
ADDRESSING DRYNESS AND SENSITIVITY
While products based on this hero ingredient offer incredible benefits, concerns about their potential to dry out the epidermis are valid, especially for those with conditions like eczema or psoriasis. “Incorporating ingredients known for their hydrating and moisturising properties, helps lock in moisture and prevent dryness,” suggests Fasi. For instance, combining the mineral with moisturising elements like shea butter or essential oils ensures that moisture is retained while benefitting from gentle exfoliation. Additionally, using saltbased treatments in moderation and following up with a rich moisturiser can help maintain the skin's hydration levels. Opting for products specifically designed for sensitive skin further reduces the risk of irritation.
THE SCIENCE BEHIND SALT THERAPIES
Salt scrubs and soaks do more than just exfoliate. When applied to the skin, they release minerals that are absorbed, providing nourishment and promoting skin renewal. This process not only improves texture but also supports the overall health of your largest organ. Salt’s natural purifying properties make it an excellent choice for unclogging pores and detoxification. “Therapies such as salt baths and halotherapy (salt therapy) have been gaining popularity due to their potential benefits for respiratory health and skin conditions,” says Fasi. In salt baths, the minerals dissolve into the water, allowing the body to absorb them through the skin. This replenishes mineral levels and provides a sense of relaxation. Halotherapy, where salt particles are inhaled in controlled environments, is believed to support respiratory health and improve derma conditions through its antiinflammatory properties.
SALT CONSUMPTION AND SKIN HEALTH
While topical applications are widely celebrated, its role in diet shouldn't be overlooked. “Consuming the right kind of salt in moderation can actually have positive effects on your health. Salt is essential for maintaining proper fluid balance in the body, nerve function and muscle contraction,” explains Fasi. Unrefined salts like sea salt or Himalayan contain trace minerals that help maintain fluid balance and support vital functions. However, excessive consumption – particularly the processed kind, which is hidden in many foods – can lead to health concerns like high blood pressure and organ damage.
A BEGINNER'S GUIDE TO SALT-BASED TREATMENTS
“The best way to start your salt treatment journey is with a foot bath salt,” suggests Fasi. Solty's innovative foot bath salt pouches, designed like tea bags, make this experience mess-free and convenient. Available in 10 different fragrances, including ginger, rose petal, sandalwood and jasmine, each pouch is enriched with essential oils and packed with 84 trace minerals. Simply dip the bag in water and soak your feet for five to six minutes to enjoy a rejuvenating, muscle-relaxing experience before branching out to different explorations with the miracle mineral.
TO NEW BEGINNINGS!
For a complete reset, Bushra Hakim began the new year with a self-indulgent day at Rimal Spa, Mövenpick Hotel Bahrain.
Sometimes, you just know when it’s time to hit the pause button on life. For me, it was one of those rare moments of selfrealisation after months of juggling work deadlines, settling into a new home and embracing the chaos of newlywed life. I needed a break – a proper one – and what better way to reset than with a spa day? So, when I was invited to experience Rimal Spa at Mövenpick, I was, to say the least, ecstatic.
Walking into Rimal Spa itself felt like stepping away from the daily grind. The soft, earthy tones of the décor, plush seating, purple and gold mosaic tiles, raindrop crystals and warm wooden accents instantly put me at ease. Add to that the subtle aroma of lemongrass wafting through the air, and I could already feel the tension starting to leave my body. At the reception, I was greeted by Yanthie, the Spa Manager, whose calm and friendly demeanour set the tone for the experience ahead. She handed me a consultation form to fill out – detailing preferences, skin sensitivities, concern areas and anything else to tailor my treatments to perfection.
The first stop on my spa journey was the Royal Hammam. My therapist, Manal, welcomed me with a smile and led me to the changing room, where I slipped into a fluffy white robe and slippers provided by the spa. The Hammam room itself was stunning, with its glistening wet bed, steam chamber and shower area – a private oasis that promised an hour of cleansing bliss.
Manal began by rinsing me down with warm water that was adjusted to the temperature of my liking. She then applied Moroccan black soap (or beldi soap) made from olive oil – a slippery, slightly sticky texture that somehow felt luxurious. She guided me to the steam room, where I spent a good 10 minutes basking in the warmth that opened my pores and loosened dead skin.
Once I signalled (using a convenient call button) that I was ready, Manal gently guided me back to the wet bed for a quick wash and an invigorating scrub using a kessa glove. It wasn’t harsh, but it was thorough – she worked her way across every inch of my body, removing layers of dead skin I didn’t even know were there. The visible rolls of exfoliated skin were proof of her expert touch. For an extra layer of cleansing, she reapplied the black soap, scrubbing it in for good measure.
The next phase of the treatment was arguably my favourite: the rhassoul clay application. Rich in minerals and detoxifying properties, the clay felt cool and refreshing on my freshly exfoliated skin. Once it dried and hardened, Manal rinsed it off with warm water before giving my hair a quick wash using shampoo and conditioner. This wasn’t just a shower; it felt like a regal cleansing ritual as if I were a queen being pampered in a palace. She then escorted me to a separate room to dry off and prepare for the next stage of my spa journey – The Asian Blend Massage, a mix of Thai and Balinese massage techniques. My second therapist, Ika, introduced herself with a warm smile and a reassuring presence. She took the time to ask about my preferred pressure and focus areas. I mentioned the knots in my back and shoulders from long hours of desk work but left the rest in her capable hands. Ika began at my feet and legs, working her way upwards in a rhythmic flow. Using almond oil (perfect to keep the body warm during the cold months), her strokes alternated between firm kneading and soothing glides. Her pressure was precise – firm enough to tackle the tension without veering into discomfort. When she reached my back and shoulders, she paid extra attention and used a combination of deep tissue techniques and stretching motions that eased away my stiffness. The session ended with a heavenly scalp massage that sent me into a near-meditative state.
Hoping that this would go on forever, I moved on to my final treatment of the day: an express facial from Elemis. Helen, my facialist, had a calming energy that perfectly matched the vibe of the day. She began by doublecleansing my skin with the Superfood AHA Glow Cleansing Butter, massaging it in with soft, circular motions and followed this with the Elemis Dynamic Resurfacing Facial Wash – a foamy, gentle cleanser that left my skin feeling squeaky clean.
The warm towels she used to remove each product had a delicate lime essence, adding an aromatic touch to the ritual. Helen then applied the Papaya Enzyme Peel, warning me of a slight tingling sensation that subsided quickly, leaving my skin feeling smooth and refreshed. She followed this with the Rehydrating Ginseng Toner, which cooled and balanced my skin, before layering on the Pro-Collagen Rose Micro Serum, which added hydration and a subtle plumpness. She continued with the Pro-Collagen Rose Facial Oil to lock in moisture and, just as I was about to drift into a deep sleep, she applied a cooling Peel-
Off Face Mask. While waiting for the mask to set – a typically dull part of facials – Helen surprised me by massaging the Japanese Camellia Body Oil Blend into my hands and shoulders. This thoughtful touch elevated the experience, making every moment enjoyable.
Once the mask was removed, the facial was completed with the ProCollagen Marine Cream, SPF 30, and a Pro-Collagen Neck & Décolleté Cream. She even addressed my concerns about dark circles with an eye cream and finished with a hydrating lip balm. My skin was glowing, replenished from the effects of winter dryness and radiating health.
As I sipped a steaming cup of ginger tea in the relaxation area, I reflected on the sheer indulgence of the day. The Hammam, massage and facial weren’t just luxurious – they were transformative. Taking time for myself reminded me how essential self-care is, not just for the body but also for the mind. Feeling rejuvenated and prepared to take on the new year, I found myself already planning my next visit – perhaps on a Wednesday to enjoy the ladies’ day discount.

ART IS LIFE
OHLALA spoke to Dr Nesrine El Abed, Assistant Professor Fine Arts at the University of Bahrain on her career and how art makes us more human.
OHLALA – How did art enter your life? When did you know you wanted to work in this field?
Dr Nesrine El Abed – My artistic journey reflects an innate connection to creation. From an early age, art felt like a natural language to me. The encouragement of my parents, who gave me blank sheets to draw on, and the inspiration I found in my brother’s talent highlight the crucial role of a supportive family environment in awakening my artistic sensibility. My exploration of various art forms, such as dance and theatre, reflects a multidimensional creative spirit. I never confined myself to a single discipline
but sought to channel my inner energy through diverse mediums. Each artistic activity I pursued enriched my overall perspective on art and life. The idea that ‘art makes me feel alive’ reveals a profound philosophy: art is far more than a hobby or a career, it is a way of being, a lens through which I understand the world and myself.
OHLALA – You acquired a PhD at the Paris 1: Panthéon-Sorbonne University. Can you tell us about your career and this experience?
Dr Nesrine – I have an academic and professional background in Fine Arts,
with substantial experience in both teaching and research. I have a solid foundation in a wide range of topics within the arts, including history, aesthetics, Islamic art, contemporary art and art criticism. My experience at renowned institutions like the Paris 1: Panthéon-Sorbonne University, where I earned my PhD with the highest distinction, speaks to my strong academic foundation and my ability to engage in sophisticated research. My experience in Paris, particularly at La Sorbonne Paris 1, was incredibly enriching. I had the opportunity to fully embrace student life while balancing work, which provided me with a unique and formative experience. Holding a PhD in Fine Arts: Fundamental and Applied Research places me in a unique position, offering me the chance to create art while conducting in-depth research on creative concepts and processes.
OHLALA– What is art for you?
Dr Nesrine – Art is a universal language that transcends words. It allows humanity to communicate, dream and live fully. It serves as a mirror of the human soul, a way to create parallel worlds, sometimes ephemeral but always meaningful. Art is far more than a mere act of creation: it is therapy, an escape, an exploration of oneself and the world. It gives everyone the opportunity to transcend their limits and find a space of freedom to express, dream and move forward. Life without art is unimaginable; art is life itself. In this sense, art is inseparable from life. It is everywhere: in dance, theatre, cinema, painting, sculpture, music and even in the daily gestures of decorating or organising our surroundings. It brings colour, beauty and meaning to our existence, fulfilling a fundamental need to express, understand and be understood.
OHLALA– How important is it to understand Art History and Theory to create a path for the future of art?
Dr Nesrine – Understanding ancient civilisations, such as those of Mesopotamia, Persia or Ancient Egypt, allows us to see how art reflects humanity’s concerns, beliefs and developments over time. This understanding provides a solid foundation for contemplating contemporary creation. Art is, indeed, a progression, a perpetual evolution, much like medicine or science. Each era and each artistic movement emerges from a specific context, philosophical reflection, need or response to social or cultural events. Just as medicine relies on the accumulation of knowledge to innovate, art draws upon a theoretical and practical tradition to push its boundaries. Whether analysing an artwork, creating one or imagining new forms, this historical and theoretical understanding is indispensable. This critical approach, combined with artistic poetics, equips you with the tools to envision a rich artistic future aligned with contemporary challenges, whether in conceptual art, installations or other emerging forms.
OHLALA– What do you think art represents in people’s lives?
Dr Nesrine – The essence of art is a universal and timeless force that transcends linguistic, cultural and geographical barriers. Since the dawn of humanity, art has been a means of communication, a way to explore emotions, tell stories and connect with others. Today, with the advent of digital technologies, art continues to evolve, offering new ways to journey inwardly and outwardly, to interact and to express oneself. Digital art, for instance, is not merely an extension of traditional art but a reconfiguration of the boundaries of creativity, space and time. One crucial aspect is art
“Art is a universal language that transcends words. It allows humanity to communicate, dream and live fully.”
– Dr Nesrine El Abed
as a reflection of identity and culture. It is an ongoing exploration where every work and every creative gesture carries traces of our past, present and aspirations. This quest for identity lies at the heart of many artistic endeavours, whether personal or collective. Finally, art as therapy and a source of joy is a universal truth. It allows us to liberate ourselves, transform negative energies into beauty and reconnect with ourselves and others. In a world that is increasingly interconnected yet often alienating, art remains a cornerstone of our well-being and mutual understanding. I would say my vision is that of an artist – one who sees beyond material creation, delving into the human and social depths of art.
OHLALA – You have a prominent academic career, but do you like to create your own art?
Dr Nesrine – I have a balanced approach to theory and practice. My role as an Assistant Professor in Fine Arts reflects my commitment to supporting and enriching the artistic world while continuing to explore my own creativity. Teaching young artists is equally rewarding. Guiding students to discover their artistic voice, helping them develop their ideas and witnessing their growth is like nurturing a garden of creativity. While I actively create my own art, I see these two activities as deeply interconnected. My personal artistic practice inspires my teaching, and mentoring enriches my perspective as an artist. Together, they shape both my artistic and academic journey.
OHLALA– On a different note, what do you like most about Bahrain?
Dr Nesrine – My connection to Bahrain runs deep, fuelled by an enduring admiration for its unique blend of human and cultural richness. This ‘little country of love’ holds an irresistible charm, where diversity is not merely a characteristic but a profound strength – a vibrant tapestry that brings together people from all walks of life. Living here has offered me an extraordinary opportunity to witness how this diversity fosters creativity, collaboration and understanding. The Kingdom’s openness to different cultures and perspectives creates an environment where everyone can contribute to a shared sense of belonging while retaining their individuality. It is a place that inspires connection, a sense of community and mutual respect. For me, Bahrain is more than a country; it is a sanctuary of peace and a beacon of inspiration. It embodies the essence of unity in diversity, a haven where cultures meet, exchange and grow, fostering both personal and collective enrichment.

Immersed in the
Healing ELEMENTS of NATURE
Looking for a holistic approach to treating body and mind, Fernanda Langhammer visited Layan Life by Anantara and discovered much more than she expected.
Thailand is a popular destination amongst Middle Eastern residents. It’s not a very long flight away and the country offers stunning beaches, super green nature and delectable cuisine – the perfect combination of paradise for a girl like me. However, my visit to Phuket this time (I went there 10 years ago) was to embrace a different experience – a wellness retreat called Layan Life by Anantara at Anantara Layan Phuket Resort.
The brand is well-known in the region for offering five-star properties with that special touch of making you feel at home. But in Phuket, they elevate the experience with a well-being concept that embraces the ‘Life Method’ with four primary pillars: Longevity Medicine Diagnostics, Traditional Thai Medicine, Complementary Medicine (with holistic therapies) and Lifestyle Medicine Practices.
The trip was planned right after sending the magazines to the press, and I was looking forward to some days of relaxation and mostly connecting with myself. Everyday life and busy routine make us forget something important: ourselves!
We arrived at the reception and the check-in was smooth between refreshing drinks and cold towels – a nice treat as the weather was warm. I was then given my Deluxe Pool Villa key card to get changed and head to the Layan Life building for my initial consultation. Before my arrival, I received a wellness consultation form to fill in and a request for a video call to further personalise my treatments. Unfortunately, I had no time to book a session, but I highly recommend you do it. This will allow them to understand your goals and preferences (but also limitations; I am a bit claustrophobic, which would have been helpful for them to know in advance).
But before I talk about my experience at Layan Life, I need to tell you about my room. The villa has a pre-entrance, a very comfy bed with a welcome sign ‘written’ with leaves placed in the middle of the room and a washroom area on the right. Everything is extremely spacious, yet still cosy. But the crème de la crème is the private pool with views of the greenery and an outdoor bathtub for a bathing experience under the stars. I absolutely loved it! Back in the room, fresh coconut water, a basket with exotic Thai fruits, coconut cookies, homemade chips and spiced nuts made me smile – I felt a bit hungry, so it was a wonderful welcome. The Thai guava was especially delicious, with intense guava flavours but a pear-like texture.
Wellness Journey
To reach the incredible building of Layan Life by Anantara, you can take a buggy or walk. I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to walk between trees and native foliage, so that was my favourite way to get there every time. My first consultation was with Dr A, who analysed my skin and chose the best IV infusion treatment to start my wellness journey. These treatments are quite trendy and, according to specialists, are the fastest way to deliver beneficial minerals, vitamins and antioxidants straight into the bloodstream. Oral supplements have to travel through the digestive system and are not so effective. We went for an immune boost with vitamin A, C, E and B complexes. I received a tailored programme with a series of treatments covering various areas for a holistic approach. I had a super stretching session with Tas; he knew exactly how far he could push and I felt really good after it. I am in general good health, however, I have really bad knots in my upper back and shoulder area where I keep all my tension. To treat that, I went for Pain Management. The physiotherapist, Pat, worked her magic utilising a machine called Winback that uses radiofrequency current that accelerates the body’s natural healing process. She worked on the critical areas and I felt really relieved after the session. Still working on my upper back situation, the Sweet Herbal Dreams massage (which was very misleading as I had the impression that I would sleep during the treatment, but it was quite the opposite) was performed by Earnt, who used Thai Traditional Medicine (TTM) that combines herbal medicine, bodywork practices and
spiritual healing. She applied a pressure point massage and when I say pressure point, it means really deep pressure, which was extremely painful but definitely needed. I did, indeed, get a good night’s sleep that night. Under TTM, I also had the Pao Ya Heated Herbal Therapy and Goy Mod Look Therapy, both massages targeting the abdomen area. The first one helps to support healthy digestion and reduce fluid retention. It uses herbs heated by fire to relax the gut and balance the region. The second is more specific to the female reproductive organs to improve circulation and symptoms of PMS and menopause. They were both done by the lovely therapist, Tai. But the therapies that I liked most were the Acupressure and Energy Balancing, which work in areas that I usually don’t pay much attention to: my inner self. I frequently go for massages and facials, but I don’t really participate in therapies that promote mindfulness. Kedar, an energy medicine practitioner, used techniques to help me find my balance. He mentioned that we are always taking care of our hardware (our body) and forget to work on the software (which would be our mind and energy), and that definitely applied to me. It was an intense experience, and I left Layan Life reflecting on this aspect of my life that I have been neglecting for a while.
They also offer an array of activities, such as Thai Boxing, Archery and Ziplining at Layan Active Zone, that will keep you busy. I went for my regular runs. I couldn’t miss the opportunity to do so amongst nature and with incredible views.
Body Nourishment
But Anantara Layan Phuket Resort offers much more. Breeze restaurant (the all-day-dining option) has a wellness menu that will help you keep a balanced diet. The highlights of this menu for me were the Life Som Tam, a twist on the traditional papaya salad with crispy tempeh (you can also opt for chicken if you prefer), the Dal made with black lentil, azuki beans and coconut yoghurt, that was absolutely filling and full of flavour, and the smoothies, with the Autoinflammatory one prepared with papaya, lime, turmeric, ginger, cayenne, chia and coconut water being my favourite pick. But if you don’t want healthier options, you can choose from a selection of pasta, seafood and beef dishes.
AGE is a restaurant focused on steak. Boasting an ageing cellar with an impressive variety of all sorts of cured meats and cheeses, it is orchestrated by Italian Chef Nicola. We had an amazing selection of starters, such as Pan-roasted Hokkaido Scallops that were cooked to perfection and seasoned with XO sauce, accompanied by crispy tapioca chips, and AGE’s Parmigiana, a delicious chargrilled eggplant, parmesan sauce and smoked ricotta that was beautifully presented with thin, crunchy slices of aubergine. For my main, as I am not a big fan of meat but a gnocchi enthusiast, I chose AGE’s Pan-seared Potato Gnocchi with truffle sauce and a unique touch, a 64-degree egg on top (when the yolk has fully set but is soft and custardy). It was a comforting dish yet quite daring.
The most memorable dining experience for me was at Dara. I love Thai cuisine and that’s what the restaurant offers. Inspired by the Thai word for star, Dara captures the flavours and mystique of the Andaman coast. Chef Supakarn sent us a selection of dishes to try, and each was as delicious as the last. These are my highlights: Kaeng Ka Ree Taohoo, a beautifully presented yellow curry with tofu and vegetable chips where the softness of the tofu contrasted with the crispness of the chips, all bathed in an aromatic sauce. Krajeab Phad Hed, wok-fried okra, mushrooms, garlic, soy sauce and wolffia (a type of algae). I love okra, and this dish presented this vegetable in a firm and flavourful way. Pla Yang Bai Thong, marinated black cod in burnt banana leaf, turmeric, galangal and lemongrass. The fish was flaky and delicately seasoned. It was a stunning meal!
I must also mention the breakfast, one of the most comprehensive offerings I have ever seen: a wide variety that mixed Western and Eastern staples, plus a selection of flavoursome fresh fruits. The best way to start the day was to stay for long hours eating with a view of the pool and sea.
Finding Peace
I believe that when you visit a wellness retreat, at the end of the journey, you want to feel relaxed, rested and most of all, understand what you need to do to improve your body and mind. Not only did the treatments at Layan Life by Anantara make me feel that, but also the fresh coconut water offered at Breeze, the beauty of the place, the re-energising sea swim, the greenery, the rain, the lovely company I had during my stay and the attentive staff, especially smiley Mai who would leave my room impeccable and bring a mosquito repellent every night. They all contributed to a fantastic experience. You can embark on your own path to lifelong wellness with customised three-, five-, seven- and 10-night packages.
I have to say that I can’t wait to go back.

REACH FOR THE STARS
A Greek culinary journey at Astéria took Fernanda Langhammer on a flavourfilled visit to this idyllic country where fresh ingredients meet the art of cooking.
Astéria means stars in Greek and the outlet does shoot to them when it comes to delivering amazing ambience and delectable cuisine. The brand new restaurant, or we can say a very bright star landing in Bahrain’s culinary scene, has found its place in the heart of Block 338, where Attic was previously located. Offering a fine dining experience with Greek and Mediterranean staples, it is an eatery that is here to stay and illuminate our evenings with impressive dishes and an elevated atmosphere. Get ready to be taken on an Odyssey of flavours.
My dining companion and I reached Astéria and, after a quick elevator ride up, the doors opened to this entirely renovated and enchanting venue. Greeted with ‘Kalispera’ (which means good evening in Greek), we were taken to our table. The space is divided into three areas: an indoor lounge with a DJ booth and smoking and non-smoking dining rooms. The décor is done in soft tones of beige and white with Greek columns, clay vases and mosaics on the wall, giving an Ancient Greece vibe without overdoing it.
The predominant warm white shade reminded me of the soft sunlight that kisses this country known for its many islands and blissful beaches.
A fish counter made of marble is placed near the open kitchen, from which you can choose the freshest catch of the day. If you want, you can peek at the spotless kitchen where Chef Antonio (the Greek chef who landed in Bahrain three months ago to conceptualise Astéria’s menu) and his team bring the dishes to life.
I am a huge enthusiast of Greek cuisine. I have visited the country many times, including several cities in the Peloponnese and a few islands. The expansive menu at Astéria shows that Chef Antonio is bringing authentic dishes from various regions, adding his personal touch to them. I couldn’t wait to start tasting them. We had a lot of dishes, but I will highlight a few as I, unfortunately, have a limited word count.
We chose our drinks. Philia, made with passion fruit, vanilla, pomegranate and grapefruit soda, was super refreshing, while Lalia was an interesting mix of orange, coconut cream, honeycomb and lime. Also from Greece, Mike, the man behind the bar creations, explained that he likes to play with ingredients and create drinks that play with the palate and imagination. The presentation is an essential part of the experience and, if you like to try drinks with unexpected flavours, you must visit Astéria’s bar and chat with Mike. A selection of dips reached our table: Tzatziki, the iconic Greek yoghurt with cucumber, garlic and fresh herbs; Melitzanosalata, smoked eggplant pureé, peppers, pickled baby aubergine, pecan and fresh herbs; Tirokafteri, Greek feta pureé with fresh red chilli, paprika and pine nuts; and Taramosalata, creamy fish paste with olive oil, salmon roe and dill – served with fresh bread. They were all absolutely delicious and my companion’s favourite part of the meal, but for me, the Tirokafteri is a must-try, super creamy feta cheese seasoned with a hint of smoke and a spicy kick, a flavour that is impossible to forget.
From the Fresh and Raw part of the menu, we tried two types of carpaccio, tomato and zucchini. Both were served theatrically by one of our brilliant waiters, Joy De Palash, who rolled them skillfully at our table. The thin slices of fresh heirloom tomato and zucchini mixed with their unique seasonings were a veggie’s heaven in a mouthful. The Seabass Tartare was beautifully composed of small cubes of fish accompanied by diced tomatoes, cucumber, shallot, olives, capers, basil and orange gel with a tangy citrus dressing. It was really refreshing mixing tender pieces of seabass with crunchy elements and zesty flavours. The Lamb Tonnato was quite a surprise, slow-cooked lamb sliced thinly and bathed in creamy tuna sauce, it was super soft and aromatic with a lovely sweet tone. It was time to move to the hot appetisers, usually my favourite part of any meal, and Astéria delivered them with mastery! We had the Grilled Baby Squid Skewers, which were spectacular – charcoal grilled and served with squid ink tarama (a creamy mixture of fish roe, lemon and bread, painted grey with the ink). Our other super attentive waiter, Abdulatif, prepared the dish in front of our eyes, removing the squid from the skewers and mixing
it with the tarama, olive oil and lemon before serving. Think of flawlessness in a spoonful. I am not a big fan of squid, but this one was perfectly cooked with a smoky hint, and the smooth texture of tarama made it just a superb bite. We also had the Grilled Octopus, which was just as amazing, and one of my favourite hot appetisers when in Greece: Fried Cheese Pie (also known as Tiropitaki). Thin filo pastry stuffed with Greek feta mousse accompanied by Manouri cheese, drizzled with thyme honey and sesame seeds. Not every place does it right, but guess what? The one at Astéria is worth the visit.
Moving to mains, we had a beautifully presented Greek Lobster Pasta, tender pieces of lobster placed in a bed of basil-tomato linguine, basil oil, lemon zest and herbs. The plate resembled a lobster (with a head and tail made of ceramic), and the recipe was placed in the centre. The pasta was al-dente and the tomato sauce paired really well with the tender pieces of lobster – yum! The other main was the Gemista Risotto, a reinterpretation of the traditional stuffed capsicum. A creamy risotto with elevated flavours composed of peppers, semi-dried tomato, zucchini, mint, dill and kefalograviera cheese – comforting flavours and delicious texture. The desserts have their own dedicated menu, and we chose the Yoghurt Gelato and Chocolate Soufflé. I had only one spoon of the first one; my dining companion was not keen on sharing it. It was truly delicious and very light, with a tangy yet sweet hint from the Greek yoghurt. I actually didn’t care much that she was not sharing the gelato because the Chocolate Soufflé was my favourite! Baked dark chocolate with a super light cake-like texture oozing with a melted chocolate centre and a scoop of vanilla on top – it was like a warm hug – absolutely delicious.
After a meal that gave us a refined fine-dining feel with authentic yet creative dishes, superb attention from the entire staff and a unique serving style, it was time to say goodbye, leaving a taste of see you really soon!

As far back as 1979, Mercedes-Benz rolled its first G-Class model off the line and onto the off-road SUV market. Now, more than 45 years later, the company has released the latest generation that features the mighty G63 AMG.
This all-new G-Class SUV is packing some serious power, cutting-edge technology and unmistakable performance-orientated design details both inside and out. Thanks to the team at Al Haddad Motors, we spent time inspecting this beautiful machine.
ON THE LOOKOUT
We have never hidden the fact that we are huge fans of all things MercedesBenz. After all, what’s not to love about this visionary, award-winning, market conquering and all-round fabulous global super brand?
We were especially interested in discovering the new inclusions in the latest generation.
DISTINGUISHED EXTERIOR
As the classic cube shape of the iconic AMG entered our vision, we caught site of subtle styling upgrades.
Firstly, the AMG crest is now featured on the bonnet and exterior mirror projections. The AMG fuel filler cap is crafted in silver chrome with black design elements whilst the radiator grille and A-pillars have also been
modified. We also noticed the positioning of the windows has also been slightly refined.
There is now a new AMG-specific bumper with three vertical louvres in front of the air inlets, as well as stainless-steel inserts. Standard adaptive MULTIBEAM LED headlights that illuminate the road according to the driving situation, with 84 individually controllable high-performance LEDs, have also been included.
When ordering the optional AMG Exterior Carbon Fibre Package, several additional exterior design elements are upgraded. At the front end, this will include a dark chrome grille, bumper inserts, darkened headlight housings, carbon design mirror housings and a visual underride guard finished in carbon fibre.
Shifting our attention to the fancy flanks, we noted the 20-inch AMG alloy wheels with their five-twin-spoke design, along with red-painted brake callipers and perforated brake disks. Various other rim options are available.
When one orders the optional AMG Exterior Carbon Fibre Package, the body will also showcase new inserts in the exterior protective trim. The spare wheel cover is finished in carbon fibre and will include a wheel ring of black Magno/metallic. The backend will feature a carbon fibre-finished visual underride guard and darkened indicators. There is an extensive range of exterior colour options available.

SWANKY INTERIOR
When examining a luxury SUV, our main criteria include an abundance of space, comfort, class and natural light. The new G63 AMG confidently ticks all these boxes.
To enter any of the models in the new G-Class range, Mercedes-Benz has now included the convenience of keyless entry.
Once inside, the daylight entering through the eight windows and sliding sunroof meant we could easily pick up the vehicle’s finer internal details. As evening arrived, the ambient lighting took over, providing a soothing environment.
The cabin featured high-end materials, brushed metal accents and unique details throughout. These touches included an instrument panel in twotone Nappa leather.
We were captivated by the round AMG DRIVE UNIT steering wheel buttons with brilliant displays and intuitive operation. When out and about, we were able to control AMG-specific driving functions and all drive programmes without the need to remove our hands from the multifunction steering wheel.
Space-wise, even those on the tall side will experience ample head, shoulder and leg room no matter where they are seated. And all seating is both supportive and comfortable.
For those needing to move cargo, the vehicle offers more than 1,000 litres in the luggage area, a space easily increased to almost 2,000 litres with the 60/40 split rear seating folded. Adding to the practical nature is a stainlesssteel rear loading sill protection strip.
As with the exterior, the interior colour range for new G-class models features more shade options than ever before.
OUTSTANDING TECH
Mercedes-Benz has ensured its latest SUV is jam-packed with leadingedge technology, including the updated MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience) infotainment system and a fully digital instrument cluster. We gained access through the 12.3-inch driver and multimedia displays
featuring touch control and voice activation. The 360° camera is now situated in the front brush guard, an improved position, enabling it to provide better imagery to the display.
Certain actions can now be triggered without the ‘Hey Mercedes’ keyword and around 20 new voice commands were created exclusively for the new G-Class.
Thanks to the smartphone integration, we connected to the system via Android Auto Wireless and Apple CarPlay. There are USB ports that also enable connections to other mobile devices. Another great inclusion is the wireless charging system for mobile devices in the front.
Later, we were impressed by the MBUX Augmented Reality for Navigation, also fitted as standard in this new model. This system superimposes graphical navigation and traffic information onto live images on the central multimedia display to help drivers find their way even in complex traffic situations. At traffic lights it displays the current light colour to assist the driver when visibility of the signal is restricted.
Amongst the many other fantastic features of the AMG is the standard Burmester 3D Surround Sound System. It features the immersive Dolby Atmos audio experience, which gives music more space, clarity and depth, turning the G63 into a state-of-the-art concert hall on wheels. We noticed an additional illuminated speaker integrated into the headliner. The amplifier features six other channels that enable better frequency separation and sound positioning. A truly phenomenal sound experience.
IMPOSING POWER & PERFORMANCE
Mercedes-Benz has ensured that new generation G-Class owners have a little more power to play with. As we started the engine and applied pressure to the accelerator, we knew we were handling a serious piece of automotive equipment.
The new AMG G63 is powered by the tried and tested Handcrafted AMG 4.0L V8 biturbo engine. The monster motor produces 577hp and 627lb-ft of torque. The hand-built engine is electrified with a 48-volt onboard electrical system and an integrated starter generator (ISG), which provides support at
lower engine speeds with an additional 20hp and 148lb-ft.
Once at our test site, we achieved a 0–100 km/h in 4.4 seconds! This time would challenge many sports cars on the market today. To tame this beautiful beast, Mercedes-Benz has enforced an electronically capped top speed of 220km/h. Probably a wise decision.
Another impressive aspect of the G63’s driving performance is the noise reduction. Thanks to the redesigned windows and upgraded seal, not only are the aerodynamics of this luxury SUV improved, but we enjoyed a far quieter ride.
We must mention the vehicle’s hydraulic active suspension system that is variable between comfort and sport along with the and overall stability control. Despite the G63 being a top-heavy vehicle, we felt glued to the road surface, even when cornering at decent speeds. It was, however, the off-road experience that impressed us the most.
Along with the five AMG DYNAMIC SELECT programmes for onroad use – Slippery, Comfort, Sport, Sport+ and Individual – three offroad drive programmes are also available, namely Sand, Trail and Rock. Two additional off-road driving modes come as part of the optional AMG Offroad Package PRO. AMG Traction PRO generates maximum traction in the Rock and Sand programmes using wheel-selective braking torque control depending on the road surface, whilst AMG Active Balance Control supplements the functions of the AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL suspension in all three off-road drive options.
SUPERIOR SAFETY SYSTEMS
It was no surprise that Mercedes-Benz has included a full suite of driver assistance and safety systems. These include Active Lane Keeping Assist, Blind Spot Assist, Active Distance Assist, Active Steering Assist, Parking Assist, a Parking Package with a 360° camera, an Exit Warning Function, a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System and multiple airbags, to name but a few.
OUR VERDICT
If at all possible, go and try this SUV!
