‘Tis The Season…

“It’s not what’s under the Christmas tree that matters, it’s who’s around it.” – Charlie Brown.

Where has the year gone?!? As my hairdresser said the other day, “I’ve barely finished taking down my Christmas tree and it’s time to put it up again!” This is, however, my favourite month because I absolutely LOVE this time of year, especially now that the weather has finally turned and it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas (sorry, couldn’t resist!).

In our biggest issue yet, we’re talking all things Crimbo, with a cover story jam packed with seasonal joy. From Christmas tree lightings and gingerbread house decorating to scrumptious festive feasts and the chicest venues to ring in the New Year, we’ve got you covered! Plus, don’t miss our mega 25-day Festive Giveaways contest, with fabulous prizes and winners announced every day – so head to our Insta page and get liking!

We’re equally thrilled to celebrate Bahrain’s 53rd National Day, as our beloved island comes alive with dazzling fireworks, concerts, festivals and delicious fare. With so much happening, don’t forget to mark your calendars for other exciting events, including the Manama Theatre Club’s panto at the British Club, the return of the Bahrain Jazz Fest and Farmers’ Market and an art exhibit by renowned Spanish artist, Juan Garaizabal. It’s truly a beautiful time to explore the island!

Speaking of food, the Fact Dining Awards turned 15 this year and we’re incredibly grateful to you – our readers and friends – for making it all possible. If you haven’t already, check out the winners to see if your favourites made the list. This month, we also explored some new (Zooba), quirky (The Tavern) and quaint (LaRocca) eateries around town and I experienced my first Arabic Afternoon Tea at Cinnamon In the Souq.

Our motoring pages rev up with the MG RX9 Premium, a luxurious full-sized SUV and the latest motoring news. Meanwhile, the travel section highlights some of the best Christmas markets to add to your bucket list and our beauty and fashion segments focus on the season’s trendiest products and collections.

And, as usual, we bring you the latest in gadgets and entertainment to keep you on trend. As we bid this year farewell, I wish you all a joyous festive season and Happy Holidays! Bye for now…

FARMERS’ MARKET RETURNS!

Bringing fresh flavours and innovative creations from local farmers, artisans and entrepreneurs, the Farmers’ Market is back in all its glory.

The much-anticipated 12th edition of the market is set to make its return to the picturesque Budaiya Botanical Gardens this winter, running every Saturday from December 7 to February 22, 2025, from 7am to 2pm.

Organised by the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Agriculture in collaboration with the National Initiative for Agricultural Development and STC Bahrain, this annual event champions the Kingdom’s agriculture sector and encourages sustainable food practices. Since its launch in 2012, the Farmers' Market has grown to become a cherished tradition, fostering connections between local farmers, entrepreneurs and the community.

Visitors can look forward to a delightful showcase of fresh produce, handmade Bahraini crafts and innovative products from talented local brands. The market features stalls from agricultural enterprises, restaurants, cafes and date shops, alongside entrepreneurs and productive families offering

unique, locally sourced items. It’s a platform where visitors can meet the Kingdom’s agricultural pioneers and explore a variety of locally grown products, reflecting the market’s role in promoting sustainable production and innovation in agriculture.

Last year’s Farmers' Market drew more than 230,000 visitors, underlining its popularity among locals, expats and tourists alike. This year, the market will offer an enriching experience with the organising committee curating an exciting lineup of programmes and events.

Whether you’re a fan of seasonal produce, a supporter of local craftsmanship or simply looking for a relaxing day out in nature, the market has something for everyone. ✤

TIMELESS SCULPTURES

The Bahrain National Museum invites audiences to experience the architectural and artistic mastery of Juan Garaizabal, with pieces inspired by the ancient city of Dilmun.

Art enthusiasts, feast your eyes on a remarkable exhibition by acclaimed Spanish artist Juan Garaizabal, right here in Bahrain.

The ongoing exhibit, Memories Carved in Steel: Echoes from Dilmun and Beyond, will be held at the Bahrain National Museum until May 23, 2025. It is organised in collaboration with the RAK Art Foundation and the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities (BACA).

Interweaving architecture, memory and sculpture into powerful works that bring the past to life, Juan presents his artistry through a unique collection of pieces that explore the dimensions of time, space and human history. The display features 12 large-scale outdoor sculptures, two of which are specially commissioned for Manama, along with 10 intricate works on paper and five smaller sculptures displayed inside the museum.

At the heart of the exhibition is The Door of Dilmun, a stunning piece inspired by the ancient civilisation of Dilmun, renowned for its association with purity and eternal life.

Composed of stainless steel and concrete, the sculpture evokes an ethereal quality, embodying a timeless sketch

of the past. “It stands as a monument to the fleeting nature of human greatness, reminding us that even the most splendid civilisations are destined to fade,” says Juan.

The outdoor installations, designed to harmonise with Bahrain’s landscape, offer visitors a unique interaction between art and environment. The indoor segment extends the narrative with smaller works and detailed drawings that invite guests into a reflective journey bridging history and modernity.

Juan’s sculptures have been exhibited at famous art venues globally, including a recent landmark installation at Art Basel, Switzerland, and the celebrated Urban Memory Miami Havana's Balcony. Currently, he is developing the International Center for Nature and Contemporary Sculpture near Madrid, an ambitious project he envisions as his legacy for future generations. ✤

JAZZ IT UP

Music fans are in for a treat as ÖDN restaurant presents live performances by two renowned artists for an electrifying evening of great melodies and smooth tunes.

Touted as one of the top destinations for jazz music on the island, ÖDN is gearing up to bring two musical sensations to the Kingdom this month – Banah and Chady Nachef.

A unique Oriental fusion Arab artist, Banah will take the stage on December 13, showcasing a new style of music that differentiates her from others in her genre. Signed by Universal Music MENA and with 12 singles in the music charts, her tunes have trended on digital platforms, as well as TV and radio stations in the Arab World. With a strong social media following, she has garnered a total of 11 million YouTube views and 1.6 million audio streams, through her original music.

Banah has worked with some of the top names in the Arabic music industry, from songwriters to producers. Her ability to perform in both English and Arabic, as well as her love for jazz and electronic music led her to create her own unique music concepts – Elektroniyat and Jazziyat. Combining eastern and western music, Banah has staged these show concepts at several festivals regionally and internationally. Another renowned blues artist, Chady Nachef, will enthral ÖDN audiences with his soulful tunes on December 27. A celebrated Lebanese musician and vocalist, his mastery

of blues, jazz and soul has earned him the title of ‘King of Blues’ in the Middle East. With a career spanning over three decades, he has become a prominent figure on the region’s music scene, captivating audiences with his electrifying guitar skills and heartfelt performances.

Chady has performed at prestigious festivals and venues across the Middle East, including Beirut Speaks Jazz and Saudi Arabia’s first jazz festival in Riyadh. His performances have not only entertained but also fostered a deeper appreciation for jazz and blues in the region. His music speaks to those who appreciate authenticity and emotion in every note. Whether you’re a fan of classic blues, smooth jazz or soul-stirring ballads, his performances are a must-see.

There will be an entertainment charge of BD7 for Banah’s event and BD10 for Chady’s, with both performances starting at 9.30pm. ✤

A PANTOMIME ADVENTURE!

Get ready for an unforgettable evening as the Manama Theatre Club (MTC) brings the theatrics of Pantoland to Bahrain, filled with laughter, music and mayhem.

Cheer, laugh and sing along as MTC brings pantomime back to the island after a five-year hiatus. This December, Help! I'm A Celebrity Pantomime Dame – Get Me Out Of Here! will take the stage at The British Club, with performances scheduled for December 5, 6 and 7.

Adapted from Ian Hornby’s beloved pantomime, this entertaining stage production whisks audiences to Pantoland, where iconic characters like Aladdin, Cinderella and Prince Charming unite to face the nefarious Evil Queen and her quirky ally, the Wicked Stepmother. When the villains banish the heroes to a jungle filled with challenges, hilarity and chaos ensue, making this a mustwatch for families.

Pantomime, a cherished British family tradition performed usually during the festive season, blends musical comedy with classic fairy tales, inviting audiences to laugh, sing and even join in the action. From cheering the goodies to booing the baddies and warning the Dame ‘it’s behind you!' when the monster makes an appearance, viewers

can expect plenty of interactive fun, slapstick comedy and gags, as well as song and dance.

Production Director Hannah Turner shared her enthusiasm, saying: "With a cast and crew of more than 70 people coming together to put on this show, we're excited to see the magic happen."

Various performances will be held throughout the three days, the first starting at 7.30pm on December 5. There will be two performances on December 6, the first starting at 3pm and the second at 7pm and the last one on December 7 at 3pm.

Tickets can be purchased online from manama.platinumlist. net and are priced at BD8.5 for British Club members and BD10 for general admission (all ages). ✤

A JAZZY CELEBRATION

Mark your calendars as the eighth edition of BNP Paribas Bahrain Jazz Fest returns, featuring world-class performers and family-friendly vibes.

The highly anticipated event will be held on December 6, bringing an unforgettable day of world-class jazz to the Royal Golf Club. Supported by the Bahrain Tourism and Exhibitions Authority, this annual festival has become increasingly popular on Bahrain’s cultural calendar, attracting over 45,000 music enthusiasts in its six-year journey. This year’s theme, Together in Jazz, celebrates the global diversity of this music genre, one that unites people across cultures and generations. The event is the only festival in the Middle East recognised by the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz/UNESCO as a Global Organizational Partner of International Jazz Day. Expect a stellar lineup featuring local gems and international stars. Headliners include Andrea Motis, the Spanish jazz prodigy who’s collaborated with the likes of Quincy Jones and Wynton Marsalis; MaMoGi featuring Mohini Dey, whose bass wizardry is breaking barriers for women in jazz; and Laurent Coulondre, the award-winning French pianist renowned for his electrifying performances. Other global sensations to take the stage include Cabo Cuba Jazz and

The New York Collective featuring AQ, alongside Bahrain’s very own Hotboxgroove and The Relocators. Young musicians from local school bands will add an exciting touch to the festival's diverse performances.

The event will also feature market vendors selling a variety of products, including arts and crafts, toys and other gift items, as well as food and drinks. Championing sustainability, the festival will offer free drinking water in partnership with Drink Responsibly and InterContinental Bahrain. Attendees are encouraged to bring reusable bottles or use 100% biodegradable cups.

THE LAST LAP

Are you ready for the final race of the F1 season that’s taking place in Abu Dhabi on December 8?

With the Drivers’ Championship already decided, after Max Verstappen came home in fifth place at Las Vegas to clinch his fourth title, it’s still all to drive for in the Constructors’ battle, with Bahrain owned McLaren in the lead with 608 points and Ferrari coming a close second with 584.

The Red Bulls could still come up from third place but, as we went to press, just before the Qatar race, it was looking increasingly unlikely. So, we could still be in for a good old, Gulf-style celebration in Abu Dhabi.

Taking place over 58 laps at the Yas Marina Circuit on Yas Island, the big race kicks off at 4pm local time on Sunday, December 8, with qualifying on December 7 and three practice sessions running over December 6 and 7. It’s reasonable to expect another good performance from Max Verstappen, who holds the track’s race lap record at 1:26.103, set during the very contentious 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, during which the Dutchman pipped Lewis Hamilton to that year’s Championship title, which would have been a record-breaking eighth championship for the Brit.

However, Britain’s Lando Norris, who has been chasing Max in the latter part of the season, also has a good record at Yas, having taken the second fast lap at 1:28.391 in the 2022 race. And this year’s cars are averaging around a second

faster, so it’s possible the track record could be broken. The Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix weekend will also include the season finales of the Formula 2 and F1 Academy series, which both promise exciting on-track action. And, for fans of two-wheeled racing, Thursday December 5 will see the Etihad Arena hosting the adrenaline-fuelled season finale of the FIM World Supercross Championship. If that wasn’t enough, there’s some seriously impressive off-track entertainment in store with Teddy Swims and South Korean DJ Peggy Gou taking to the stage in the Yasalam After-Race Concert at Etihad Park on December 5, Maroon 5 on December 6, Eminem on December 7 and Muse on December 8.

Elsewhere the Yasalam Official After-Party – Afterlife is making its Abu Dhabi debut on December 6 at Yas Gateway Park, promising a unique show with Tale Of Us featuring Layla Benitez, Rebūke and Cassian, as well as special performances.

And you can expect a spectacular fireworks display to round out the race weekend.

PREMIUM CLASS AND COMFORT

FACT spent the day in MG’s all-new RX9 Premium, a luxurious full-sized SUV that proved as capable off-road as it is on the tarmac.

MG Motors is celebrating its 100th anniversary this December.

This popular British-born, Chinese-owned brand has developed an almost cult-like following amongst many sports car enthusiasts, experiencing a broader revival of interest in recent years. With this in mind, we could not think of a better time to be invited by the team at Zayani Motors to test drive the marque’s latest offering, the RX9 Premium.

Striking Exterior

Renowned for its zippy sports cars, we were fascinated to uncover what this well-established brand could accomplish in the premium SUV segment.

Our first impression was that it exuded a powerful yet elegant presence. From head-on, the car’s 1,967mm width was apparent, emphasised by the vehicle’s prominent Starburst Wing Grille. We were highly impressed by how smoothly the sleek headlights have been integrated into the design, along with the 245 laserengraved LED light units, further enhancing the SUV’s eyecatching front profile.

Following the RX9’s sleek lines to the flanks, we appreciated the car’s contours, taking note of the stylish 21-inch, dual-tone alloy wheels that not only amplify the vehicle's visual appeal but also ensure stability and top performance both on and off the tarmac. Pop-out flush door handles add yet another touch of class to an already impressive exterior.

Once at the rear, we took in the sturdy-looking diffuser, the modish dual exhaust décor and the tastefully designed rear headlight display running the full width of the vehicle. The RX9 is offered in six exterior colours, all of which are inspired by nature.

Spacious Interior

The all-new RX9 Premium is available in three trim levels that include the entry-level STD 2.0 Turbo and the mid-tier COM 2.0 Turbo. Fortunate enough to be experiencing the top-of-therange LUX 2.0 Turbo trim, we were greeted by a lavish interior. On inspection of the thoughtfully designed cockpit, we noticed the high-quality wood grain trim of the dashboard, bestowing the vehicle with an air of elegance. We also admired the overall tasteful design of the layout, complete with perfectly positioned controls for maximum functionality.

We were pleasantly surprised by the generous amount of space on offer. The three-row, seven-seater layout provides ample leg, shoulder, knee and foot room for all occupants, with the third row boasting the largest seating space in its class.

Adding to the practical and roomy nature of the RX9 is the large luggage compartment, an area that can be expanded to 1,026 litres of storage space in the five-seat configuration. A power tailgate accentuates the car’s practical personality.

The designers at MG have ensured the interior of this highend vehicle is extremely comfortable, with the eight-way, electronically adjustable driver’s seat, with memory function, providing a commanding view of the terrain ahead. The front passenger need not be too jealous, however, as they also get

the royal treatment with a four-way electronically adjustable seat offering personalised comfort.

Hopping into the back seating, we discovered the 140° reclining second-row seats to offer flight-like comfort, with the third row providing up to 35° of reclining relief.

All seats in the LUX trim mode feature premium leather and are available in black or two-tone beige and brown.

After our thorough inspection of the luxurious interior, we concluded that the RX9’s cabin maintains a sophisticated yet practical design for both day-to-day use and longer journeys.

Functional Tech & Infotainment

Having experienced a multitude of infotainment setups over the years, we always save our highest praise for those we find to be fast and user-friendly. With the RX9 Premium, MG has delivered on both counts.

Dual, high-quality 12.3-inch touch screens have been installed in the brand’s latest creation, ensuring entertainment was always at our fingertips. We were able to effortlessly navigate through the system’s information, locating whatever we needed within a few seconds.

Adding to the convenient and high-end feel of the SUV were features including the hidden intelligent air-conditioning controls. MG has ensured that no matter how hot the weather conditions become outside, all those inside the vehicle remain as cool and comfortable as can be.

Amplifying our experience and providing the soundtrack to our day was the advanced 12-speaker premium Bose audio setup, with its cinema-quality sound. We listened to several of our favourite albums throughout the day, as we could not get enough of this superb stereo system.

Further must-mentions include wireless phone charging and smartphone integration with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

Capable Power & Performance

As is always the case, our favourite part of the day was heading out onto the roads.

What must be said is the all-new MG RX9 Premium has been designed to deliver exceptional performance across all terrains. With five adaptive driving modes – Auto, Eco, Sport, Snow and Off-road, negotiating the busy city streets of Manama during rush hour, flying along the highway or taking a sharp turn off the tarmac onto the sands was a pleasure. We found this rugged, yet refined vehicle fully equipped to tackle any terrain we directed under it with relative ease. Powered by a new Net Blue 2.0 Turbo super-efficient engine, paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission, we had all the power and control we needed at hand. At higher speeds we felt the vehicle to be stable and responsive, providing the desired acceleration, speed, handling and braking capacity to always feel in complete control of the driving experience.

Safety First

MG has placed the safety of you and your loved ones at the forefront of the RX9’s design.

The vehicle’s robust structure incorporates over 81% high-strength

steel, with ultra-high strength thermoformed steel used in key areas of the passenger compartment for enhanced protection. This premium SUV also meets the latest C-NCAP crash safety standards, ensuring the highest level of occupant safety. Equipped with Bosch’s third generation Intelligent Front View Camera and fifth generation Millimetre Wave Radar, the RX9 offers advanced driver-assistance systems for all-around protection. With side and curtain airbags and advanced driver assistance systems that include Lane Departure Warning, Blind Spot Monitoring, Lane Keep Assist, Emergency Lane Keeping, Intelligent High Beam Control, Adaptive Cruise Control and a Blind Spot Monitoring System, this SUV provides peace of mind whenever and wherever you choose to travel.

Our Verdict

MG has shown itself to be more than a one-trick pony, delivering a classy, capable and well-equipped SUV, superbly designed to deliver both on and off the roads. ✤

The new all-electric MINI Countryman is bigger than its predecessors, being 13cm longer and 8cm taller. It stays true to MINI’s signature sporty style, displaying rounded headlights, minimalistic clean and sleek lines, short overhangs and a long wheelbase contrasted with large wheels. But the new SUV has amped up its looks with bolder alloy wheels and a sleeker and more aerodynamic body.

The minimalistic circular design flows into the interior as well. In a world-first design concept, the instrument cluster is a rounded 240mm diameter OLED screen. The MINI Operating System 9 enables all vehicle functions to be accessed via touch or voice command.

The battery-powered Countryman is flexible on the inside. A five-seater, it can be compressed into three- and two-seater configurations. Adding to its sustainability factor, the upholstery is made of recycled polyester and comes in a range of three colours – with tan adding a touch of class. What’s on the smartphone agenda for December?

NORAD Tracks Santa Elfster

Never mind the guy on the shelf, this Elfster is much better behaved and is all about the gifting. Founded by software engineer Peter Imburg on discovering the difficulty his wife and sister were having trying to organise a Secret Santa for their family, it provides social networking features related to gift exchanges. Options include a universal wish-list, personalised gift recommendations, activity updates, an anonymous Q&A section (for when it’s all getting a bit crazy) and even forum discussions. Users can manage gift exchanges by creating a group, inviting friends and family, setting spending limits and swapping ideas. The curated gift guides by budget will ensure your presents always have presence. And, a bit like dogs, it’s not just for the festive season – though, it’s certainly very useful at this time of the year.

Elfster is available free of charge, as software as a service, via a website and via mobile apps for iOS and Android.

This one’s great for the kids as the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) gets into the spirit of the season with its Santa tracking app. Follow along as the big guy in red leaves the North Pole on his mission to deliver presents to children around the world.

In a community initiative from NORAD, that’s been running since 1955, the programme launches each year on December 1, but the actual Santa-tracking simulation starts at midnight annually on December 24. Apparently, the idea originated in December 1948 when the United States Air Force claimed an early warning radar had detected an unidentified sleigh and eight reindeer in the skies of the far north. And, ever since then, various arms of the US establishment have been involved in continuing the tradition. So, if your kids (or you) are looking for something fun to do in the lead up to the big day, this could be just the ticket.

In Conversation with… Adil Souate

With a deep passion for the hospitality industry, the General Manager of Onyx Rotana and Onyx Residences by Rotana shares his leadership style, what makes his job a rewarding profession and his favourite relaxing spot!

In managing both Onyx Rotana and Residences, how do you balance the high standards in both hospitality and residential services and ensure customer satisfaction across such diverse offerings?

Hospitality encompasses many definitions but, at its core, it is about making people feel welcome and at home through comfort and thoughtful service. At Onyx Residences, we have brought this concept into the residential real estate sector, offering an unparalleled living experience for both locals and expatriates seeking luxurious properties. Our approach focusses on creating a ‘wow’ factor for residents,

offering facilities and services typically found in high-end hotels and resorts. From the moment they arrive via a private driveway with a porte-cochère, residents are greeted by a grand lobby, front desk services and a lobby attendant. Valet parking, concierge services, housekeeping, maintenance and comprehensive facility management are all part of the lifestyle package we provide.

Both our hotel guests and residents benefit from the exceptional quality of amenities at Onyx Rotana & Residences, enjoying the same high standards of care and attention. Our mission is to create an environment where every moment feels indulgent and memorable.

Leadership is key in your role. How do you build a strong, motivated team? Are there any particular practices or values you emphasise to encourage high performance and exceptional guest service?

I prioritise building strong, collaborative relationships with my team by being fair, transparent, reliable and consistent – qualities that are especially important in a multicultural work environment. At Onyx Rotana & Residences, my focus is on developing and managing an efficient team by actively investing in their training, professional growth, safety and well-being. I also emphasise coaching to enhance the overall performance and success of the property. Throughout my career, I have been fortunate to benefit from the guidance and support of mentors who have shaped my professional and personal development. Now, I aim to give back by mentoring my colleagues, sharing my experiences and passing on the knowledge and lessons I’ve gained. My goal is to inspire and empower others to realise their full potential, fostering a more dynamic and skilled workforce that continues to elevate our flagship property’s standards.

What’s one surprising thing most people don’t know about running a hotel? Any myths you’d love to debunk?

Managing a hotel is both a rewarding lifestyle and a series of ongoing business decisions, but it’s not a path for everyone. While this industry is incredibly fulfilling, it comes with its challenges. Being on call 24/7, managing guest expectations, handling daily operations, adapting to changes and staying ahead of an ever-growing task list can create significant pressure. Success

in hospitality requires specific personality traits, unwavering motivation and a strong work ethic – and I absolutely thrive on it! There’s often a misconception about hospitality being an industry to avoid due to its long, irregular hours. While it’s true that hospitality operates 24/7, 365 days a year, we’re not so different from industries like healthcare, aviation or emergency services. Those of us in this field do it out of passion; we genuinely love taking care of others. That said, hospitality also offers roles with better work-life balance, such as back-of-house positions, managerial roles and administrative functions.

What’s your go-to ‘comfort food’ after a long day managing the properties? Do you have a favourite dish from the hotel’s menu?

Pizza is my ultimate comfort food – whether I’m having a tough day or just need something quick and satisfying for dinner, a fresh, hot pizza always hits the spot. As for my favourite dish on our menu, it’s the grilled lamb rack served with vegetable ratatouille – a perfect blend of flavours and sophistication!

Managing two properties can be a demanding job. When you do get some downtime, where’s your favourite getaway spot to relax and recharge?

For me, downtime comes when the job is done and our guests are genuinely satisfied – that’s my greatest sense of accomplishment. When I’m off, I enjoy escaping to the beach, when the weather allows, and indulging in cooking my favourite Moroccan Tagine, which is both relaxing and fulfilling. ✤

Ameera Mudhaffar

Marketing Manager, Global Catering Services Bahrain

Looking back at your journey from those early call centre days, what advice would you give your younger self?

If I could give advice to my younger self, it would be to embrace every opportunity to learn, even in roles that may not seem like part of the ‘big picture’. Working in the call centre taught me patience, resilience and how to communicate effectively with different types of people – skills that became foundational as I advanced in my career. I’d also tell myself not to rush the journey. Sometimes, we’re so focussed on where we’re going that we miss out on what we can learn along the way. Each role, no matter how small it seems, contributes to who you become professionally and personally.

What’s one skill you think has been the most unexpected asset on your career path?

One skill that’s surprised me with its value is adaptability. The ability to shift between industries – from airlines to banking, event management and now marketing – has been crucial.

I’ve learned to view change as an opportunity, not a challenge, and I believe that has allowed me to bring fresh perspectives and innovative ideas into each role. The adaptability I developed early on has helped me navigate different organisational cultures, work styles and market demands and it’s also made me a quicker learner, which is essential in the fastpaced marketing world.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time? Any hidden talents that might surprise us?

In my spare time, I love reading to my toddler and getting into pretend roleplaying with him. There’s something really special about seeing his imagination come to life and creating little stories together. It’s a chance for me to unwind and connect with him in such a meaningful way. It also reminds me of the importance of creativity and playfulness – qualities that I bring into my work as well, especially in crafting engaging marketing campaigns.

CREATING CULINARY ART

Having started young at the age of 15, Royal Golf Club’s Executive Chef Walid Akl talks about his impressive 20-year career, his passion for food carving and what makes his signature dish a standout!

You’ve worked in a variety of exclusive hotels and restaurants around the world. How does the experience of working at a luxury sport facility, such as the Royal Golf Club (RGC), differ from that of a traditional hotel kitchen? What unique challenges or opportunities does it bring?

The main difference is the diversity of our clientele. At the RGC, we cater to members, golfers and guests who may have varying schedules, needs and preferences. This creates an exciting challenge to provide exceptional quality while being flexible and responsive. Unlike hotels, where menus can be more fixed and centred around specific dining experiences, at the Royal Golf Club we have the opportunity to experiment with seasonal menus, themed events and special promotions like our weekly Steak Night, Levantine Night or Iconic Weekend Roast. There’s a strong focus on creating unique, event-driven experiences that align with the club’s atmosphere.

Additionally, the pace can be more unpredictable here. It’s all about staying agile and being able to deliver high-quality dishes no matter the demand, which requires strong organisational skills and a well-coordinated kitchen team.

Ultimately, the opportunity to work in this environment allows for more creative freedom. It’s incredibly rewarding to adapt our culinary offerings to enhance members’ experiences.

You’ve competed in several prestigious cooking competitions, including your memorable win at a Rotary Club event. How do these competitions push you as a chef?

I once participated in a hotel competition organised by the Rotary Club and was thrilled to win first place. The challenge was to create dishes inspired by a specific theme, which in this case

was ‘Picasso’. I developed a full range of vibrant, modern dishes that captured the theme’s artistic spirit. Winning this competition brought me immense joy and personal satisfaction – a moment that I will always cherish. It was a testament to how creative challenges like this push me to explore new ideas, refine my skills and deliver something truly unique.

Having been a part of Bahrain’s culinary scene for over two decades, how has your time here shaped your cooking style and the way you approach new culinary innovations?

My cooking philosophy revolves around constant innovation and introducing fresh ideas to the gastronomic world. Being in Bahrain for so many years has allowed me to embrace the region’s rich culinary heritage, while continuously evolving my techniques. One of my greatest passions is the art of food carving – it’s a world of endless creativity that allows me to express myself in diverse, imaginative ways. This blend of tradition and creativity keeps me inspired to craft unique dishes that both honour local flavours and push the boundaries of gastronomy.

What would you say is your signature dish at the Royal Golf Club? Could you share some insights into its flavour profile and what makes it a standout on your menu?

My signature dish is the Black Burrata Cheese with organic quinoa – a true celebration of flavour and creativity. It’s a modern twist on a classic favourite, with the creamy richness of burrata beautifully complemented by a bold, smoky flavour infused into its black outer layer. This dish reflects my passion for combining traditional techniques with contemporary flair, using fresh, highquality ingredients to create a memorable sensory experience. ✤

A TASTE OF HOME

To relish authentic Egyptian flavours with a hint of nostalgia, Amira Ragab headed to the hottest new foodie sensation on the island, Zooba.

My heart pounded with joy the moment I stepped inside Zooba in Al Liwan. Hearing Wegz's music playing brought a smile to my face; it perfectly embodies Zooba's modern, energetic and authentic vibe. The colourful and funky décor, with collaterals and packaging displayed like art, reminded me of a Roy Lichtenstein painting, bursting with primary colours, bold outlines and Ben-Day dots. Modern interpretations of pharaonic gods blended seamlessly with glimpses of everyday Egyptian life. The high ceilings evoked memories of my grandfather's house, a place filled with cherished memories. The bread corner, reminiscent of those found in every Egyptian neighbourhood, and the feteer (flaky layered pastry) maker skillfully kneading the dough, further enhanced the feeling of home. It was as if I had truly stepped back into Egypt. Chef Mohamed Sobhy warmly welcomed us and enthusiastically guided us through the menu and specials. He then introduced us to Islam, our host for the day.

As we awaited our food, we were offered a refreshing hibiscus lemon drink, which my friend thoroughly enjoyed and ordered again. Feeling nostalgic, I opted for fakhfakhina, a traditional Egyptian mixed fruit drink. It tasted like a fruit fiesta, reminiscent of those from local juice shops, but with Zooba's unique twist. We were then presented with Zooba's famous award-winning Falafel, also known as Taameya, which surpassed any I've tasted in Bahrain. We tried both the classic and spicy versions and were

so impressed that we ordered some to take away. Accompanying the falafel was the impressive Mazzat Tray, a delightful assortment of eggplant, pickled tomatoes, harissa cauliflower (my favourite, as I love a spicy kick), om ganoush (baba ganoush with beetroot, giving it a beautiful blush) and bessara (a creamy dip of split fava beans, onions, garlic, herbs and spices). It also included white cheese and tomato, olive labna, spiced sausage, beef liver and baladi bread chips. This platter is perfect for sharing, catering to both vegetarian and non-vegetarian preferences.

As we enjoyed our starters, humming and tapping our feet, Islam began plating our first main course: Cairene Molokheyya. It featured half a roasted chicken atop vermicelli rice, pickled eggplant and tomato, served with a mug (yes, a mug!) of garlicky molokhia (jute mallow stew). As Islam poured this vibrant green sauce over the dish, I was transported back to Friday gatherings at my grandmother's house, surrounded by family. Each bite brought back a flood of memories. I hadn't experienced such food-induced joy since leaving Egypt for Bahrain. This dish truly moved me to tears.

My dining companion’s dish, braised lamb shank, was a culinary masterpiece. The slow-cooked lamb, nestled in a rich cinnamon tomato sauce with peppers, onions, potatoes, lemon zest, parsley and raisins, was served over a bed of vermicelli rice. I simply had to try a bite. The lamb was incredibly flaky and tender, and the combination of cinnamon and raisins introduced a subtle sweetness that elevated the flavour profile to new heights. It was a truly heavenly bite. I must pause here to commend the vermicelli rice. It was perfectly

cooked and very tasty, complementing the main dishes without overpowering them. I even enjoyed it on its own.

Our final main course was the Hot Sausage Macarona Bechamel: baked penne pasta with spicy ground sausage, harissa and bechamel. As a spice lover, I was delighted. The chef's addition of Romi cheese elevated the dish to another level.

For dessert, we indulged in Zooba Rice pudding, a delightful combination of angel hair halwa, clover honey, crushed mixed nuts and orange zest. We also savoured Boghasha, a date-filled pastry dusted with powdered sugar. Islam enhanced the experience by pouring hot milk over the dish, creating a perfect blend of sweet, tender and crunchy textures. Boghasha is a type of Feteer Meshaltet, a flaky Egyptian layered pastry made with numerous thin layers of dough and ghee. While it can be enjoyed plain with various accompaniments or filled with sweet or savoury ingredients, Chef Mohamed recommended the classic version. Served with a choice of two toppings (molasses, white honey, aged cheese or tahini molasses), I opted for the traditional Egyptian combination of aged cheese and tahini molasses. The result was, as anticipated, exquisite! The hospitality, attention to detail in the preparation, presentation and serving of each dish was impeccable. If you crave fresh, authentic, affordable Egyptian cuisine made with local ingredients that evokes a cosy, home-cooked feeling, Zooba should be your next dining destination. ✤

RUSTIC ITALIAN CHARM

A cheerful Italian gastronomic escape was on the cards for Apple Sharma, as she relished a festive menu full of seasonal delights and an unforgettable dining experience at LaRocca.

Tucked away in the heart of Saar, LaRocca is a quintessential Italian eatery inspired by the iconic 16th century Italian fortress. This hidden gem offers a modern interpretation of authentic Italian cuisine, showcasing a passion for simple yet timeless recipes.

As you walk along cobbled pathways to LaRocca’s alcove entrance, it feels like you’ve stepped into a quaint Italian village. At the back of the restaurant, a cosy pizzeria comes to life with chefs preparing pizza and fresh pasta – a lovely, rustic scene straight out of a picture book.

With both indoor and outdoor seating, LaRocca is a sight to behold. The outside terrace features wooden beams with overhanging Edison bulbs and wooden shutter windows. For the festive season, this cosy space is beautifully decorated, complete with a Christmas tree, baubles on surrounding trees and tables decked with holly. The inside is as impressive – an intimate glass house with an electric overhead canopy that opens in the evening, offering a view of the starlit skies above. Just inside the entrance is a gingerbread house adorned with the staff names, a heartwarming touch.

From the moment we arrived, the service at LaRocca was exceptional. Greeted by Restaurant Manager Mahesh Mohanan and his friendly team, we felt like treasured guests. The pristine table settings and silver service, delivered with genuine smiles, elevated our experience to fine-dining level.

Taking our seats overlooking the terrace, we started with a shot of refreshing virgin limoncello. A basket of freshly baked bread soon arrived, accompanied by Italian extra virgin olive oil and balsamic vinegar.

As we waited for the starters, we got into the festive spirit by popping Christmas crackers, donning paper crowns and sharing ‘dad jokes’, staying true to tradition!

Complementing the festive ambience, we were treated to a variety of lovely drinks, including our favourite Oh Mia Passione – a delightful concoction of passion fruit, raspberry and lemon –expertly crafted by bartender Jerus Baluma.

LaRocca’s delightful list of Italian classics from its regular menu and seasonal specials from its festive menu, had us salivating and we were eager to try them all.

We started with Nero al Tartufo – truffle-infused black risotto balls with truffle cheese, parmesan and mozzarella, served with bittersweet chocolate sauce and a unique truffle twist on cacio e pepe (cheese and pepper). Topped with crispy vermicelli for a delicate crunch and subtle truffle notes, this was my absolute favourite and I vowed to return for this dish alone.

Next, we tried the freshly baked Neapolitana pizza. Combining mozzarella, marinara, pesto drops and basil, it was a definite crowd pleaser. Soft melted cheese fell apart as we took our individual slices and the dollop of pesto and basil leaves brought out the freshness of the ingredients – a nod to authentic Italian cuisine. From the sea, the Puttanesca Hammour was a Mediterranean fusion delight. The tender, oven-baked and grilled fish paired beautifully with zesty and tangy puttanesca sauce, roasted baby potatoes and dill, while the fluffy saffron risotto made for a light, fragrant accompaniment.

Of course, we had to sample LaRocca's pasta (made fresh inhouse by Chef Maricel Baliguat), and the Gamberoni Al Limone didn’t disappoint. The capellini pasta, tossed in a creamy lemon sauce with pan-seared prawns, lemon and orange zest and parmigiano was refreshingly light, leaving a pleasant citrus taste lingering on the palate.

While we relished these amazing dishes, Executive Chef Ishara Dilipu Anuradha joined us to talk about LaRocca’s festive specials. The Ravioli Blueberry, with gorgonzola and parmesan, was wonderfully unique and reminded me of one of my own favourite holiday creations, Brie and cranberry pastry parcels. Meanwhile, the Anatra delle Feste, a sous vide duck breast glazed in a rich balsamic berry reduction, was a standout. Served with creamy mashed potatoes, the fruity festive flavours paired beautifully with the subtle, earthy duck, making this a dish to savour.

A surprising twist came in the form of Fettuccine al Mirtillo Rosso, a simple dish of homemade pasta tossed in a sweet pomodoro sauce with tangy cranberry notes. Following that, we were excited to try the Frutti Filet Mignon – a seared steak cooked to perfection, accompanied by sautéed spinach, vegetables and a smoky fig and cranberry sauce. Juicy, tender, fruity and utterly unique, it was a perfect centrepiece for a holiday feast.

For dessert, LaRocca’s offerings were as divine as the previous courses. The classic Tiramisu, with airy mascarpone and espressosoaked savoiardi biscuits, was a unanimous favourite – so good it disappeared within moments. The Sorrento, a zesty lemon mousse with a mirror glaze, lemon curd, white chocolate shell and berries was equally memorable with its smooth, citrusy flavours. From the festive menu, the Torta di Formaggio – a blueberry cheesecake with a crumbly biscuit base – delighted us with

its stunning presentation and creamy texture. We ended our feast with Festa in Tavola, a soft, fluffy Christmas fruit cake with blackcurrants, raisins and mixed spices, accompanied by a round of coffees and a delicious hot chocolate, aptly named La Bella Vita (beautiful life), also part of the festive menu.

As we wrapped up the evening, La Rocca left us with a lovely parting gesture – a handwritten postcard featuring a quaint Italian scene, with a personal message. It was a thoughtful touch that epitomises the restaurant’s hospitality.

LaRocca offers a charming dining experience that feels like a warm embrace. With authentic Italian dishes, festive cheer and impeccable service, it’s a must-visit for anyone craving the flavours of Italy. ✤

A FUSION OF FLAVOURS AND FANTASY

The Tavern Eatery & Hobbies offers an immersive experience of a fantasy world with its creative food and whimsical ambience. Charishma Thankappan had an enthralling day out waving wands and chewing meaty chunks.

Entering The Tavern Eatery & Hobbies is like walking through Platform 9¾. Once inside, poof! There’s no sign of the city, as you’re transported into a mediaeval fantasy setting.

Located in Block 338 in Adliya, The Tavern is a space for dining and gathering over popular tabletop games. It has a fantasy game-themed setting, where you can play your favourite games as you dine.

The dimly lit, wood-and-stone décor creates a cosy, rustic feel. A witch’s broom, alcoves with candles and a wand on top of a book (of spells?) recreate the setting from Harry Potter. A room to the left of the entrance is dedicated to Dungeons & Dragons. It has a long table with a digital screen, inviting a large group to sit, where you can dine as you play. Shelves stacked with card and board games like Bloodborne, Codenames and Thunder & Lightning will make any gamer squeal with delight. And there’s a Vikingthemed bar and dining area on the upper level.

The staff, outfitted in mediaeval garb with tunics and leather arm bracers, complete the dramatic setting. And in true Viking chieftain style, they guide you to the most suitable seating space. If you get lost navigating the Gothic-style menu – which perfectly matches the atmosphere – allow the knowledgeable crew to suggest the ideal dishes.

Avid fans of fantasy stories and games, Mirna Almaz and Sadeq Albaharna are the owners and brains behind The Tavern. They wear their hearts on their sleeves, as the eatery reflects their passion in every little detail. The gaming concept extends to the dining experience.

While we waited for the starters, my mates and I were given fun escape-room-like clue-box puzzles to keep us busy. Designed to make any puzzle enthusiast pull their hair out, these well-made, intricate metal boxes made the waiting time a breeze. We began our culinary quest with the starters – Cornbread & Chestnut, Elf Ears and The No Name. We enjoyed hearty slices of cornbread, with roasted chestnuts and grilled grapes, alongside a warm and thick chestnut sauce. The Elf Ears were buttery palmiers. They had a flaky, crunchy texture and a zing of za'atar. We relished them with a pesto dip. The No Name was a platter of generous goodness, comprising baked camembert cheese with garlic, toasted bread, grilled tomatoes and grapes. Warm and gooey, the baked cheese was perfect for dipping with the crunchy toasted bread. The glossy cherry tomatoes added a tangy twist. Getting into the thick of the action, next arrived the mains. The Steak and Ale Pie was a sumptuous slice of well-seasoned moist steak bites and chilli, encased in a fluffy crust. It came over a bed of garlic butter-glazed carrots and peas that provided a colourful contrast. The Clucking Roast was quite a table hogger. As a whole roasted chicken with potatoes and lemon, it is meant for sharing. The knife felt no pressure as it carved the tender meat. Juicy on the inside, with crisped outer skin; its flavours were enhanced by meticulously incorporated herbs and spices. Each of the dishes was served with wooden cutlery, vibing with the theme of the place. The Dragon Stew was a Kraken, so be warned that you will need a navy to demolish it. A huge beef stew with potatoes, carrots, corn, peas and mushrooms; we cruised through the thick broth with oars of rustic bread. Ginormous chunks of beef felt firm to

the bite yet melted in the mouth. The dense, tasty broth seeped into the vegetables, giving them a tangy, spicy flavour. It even converted a corn-hater like my companion into a drooling fan.

To wash these monsters down, we enjoyed a virgin mojito called The Coven, ideal for three people. To add a touch of whimsy, it came served in a cauldron that appeared to be bubbling over, thanks to the magic of dry ice. Frostmourne, named after a weapon in World of Warcraft, is not for the faint-hearted. A blend of pineapple, passionfruit and lime; this was a striking turquoise potion that energised us.

It’s not all fantasy and adventure for thrill-seekers alone. The Tavern has something for the lovebirds as well. Its signature drink, The Red Wedding, is a must-try. It's a romantic cooler for couples. Served in matching glasses bound to each other with a red string (did we say drama?), it was a sweet symphony of vibrant fruits. A daring card game accompanied the drinks, adding a fun twist. We ended on a sweet note with pies. The Apple Pie was pure perfection, with a warm and moist filling and the right amount of sweetness. The puff pastry received great applause from my company for being fresh and flaky and perfectly complementing the soft filling. It was accompanied by a dollop of vanilla ice cream sitting atop toasted nuts, that lent a hint of salt. The Pumpkin Pie was a visual stunner. Laden with a glob of whipped cream on top, it was adorned with marshmallows and toasted pecans, offering an array of textures with every bite.

A haven for gamers and foodies alike, The Tavern is a place to visit with friends and family. This unique place serves hearty and wholesome dishes, and you’ll always find yourself surrounded by good cheer and a merry vibe. ✤

A relaxing day out was enjoyed by Lawson Misquitta during his recent visit to Cinnamon In the Souq.

The Manama Souq, with its colourful past and rich history, is part of a vibrant tapestry woven from centuries of trade that has served both the Kingdom and the wider Gulf region. Fast forward to today, this remarkable journey is both remembered and celebrated at Cinnamon In the Souq, a café that pays homage to the legacy of this marketplace by honouring not only its rich heritage but also its spirit of hospitality. As we walked into the heart of the souq, only a minute away from the Manama Post Office, we passed an intriguing mix of market stalls still lively as ever, plying their trade, before finally arriving at our destination. Stepping into the stylish café, my dining partners and I were immediately taken by its distinctive décor with calm and elegant details. The space was intricately adorned with motifs from Bahrain’s past, such as exposed wooden framework on sections of the ceiling, reminiscent of buildings from decades ago, and photo frames highlighting actual scenes of the souq from its heyday in black and white. But standing out were the two massive, floor-to-ceiling tiled walls, each adorned with intricate murals painted in striking shades of cobalt blue, depicting scenes from the souq’s history, inviting guests to lose themselves in its stories. The café boasts a wonderful outdoor seating area, a spacious indoor section and the place where we chose to sit – an elegant first-floor nook that resembles a luxurious study, complete with cosy bookshelves, soft lighting and plush seating, making it an ideal retreat for relaxation or conversation. Whichever of the three you

choose, you’re sure to enjoy a vibrant and laid-back atmosphere. As we explored the menu, we were warmly greeted by the gracious host, who introduced us to several offerings, helping us make our selections, and also checked in on us throughout our visit. We kicked off our meal with a variety of cold mezze comprising creamy hummus, mutabel and babaganoush, served with warm Arabic bread – simple and satisfying. I must note that the babaganoush was the first bowl to be scooped clean, a clear favourite on the table.

As we finalised our selections for the main course, a round of refreshing, citrusy concoctions of lemon, strawberry and peach graced our table and provided a zing to our taste buds. I particularly enjoyed the Lemon and Basil Iced Tea, a playful mix of sweet and sour, and the Strawberry Mojito, which was delightfully satisfying.

The first round of main course included the Lamb Kofta – a preparation that combined ground lamb with a variety of fragrant spices, sautéed onions, garlic and parsley. Chargrilled to perfection, every bite was tender, succulent and bursting with garlicky goodness. Also, the subtle heat of chillies in every bite added a nice kick. It was served along with warm Arabic bread and two dips, a mint chutney and a creamy, spicy harara. Next, we tried the Butter Chicken, a tasty tomato-based gravy slow-cooked to create a sweet, creamy and buttery preparation. We savoured its comforting depth of flavours, alongside a serving of rice and freshly made parathas.

Finally, we couldn’t resist the Tavuk Skewer – tender, marinated chicken with grilled capsicum and onions, served on flatbread with baby spinach, cherry tomatoes, hummus and a delicious garlicky pepper sauce. A dish bursting with flavour, it was the perfect way to round off our mains.

Approaching the end of our meal, we found ourselves engrossed in conversation and decided to linger a little longer. In an ambience as comforting as this, it felt only natural. We ordered a round of coffees, expertly brewed and paired it with a selection of desserts.

The wonderfully decadent Chocolate and Dates Cake was perfectly moist with just the right amount of sweetness and the lovely Baklava, light and crispy, offered a delightful contrast of textures.

As we were leaving, the Afternoon Tea menu on the board outside caught our attention and we knew we had to come back to try it – and that’s exactly what we did!

The Afternoon Tea is a delightful experience with an Arabic twist. Served on a two-tiered decorative golden tray, the savoury treats included Cheese Sambosa, Halloumi Sandwich, Chicken Shawarma

Roll and freshly baked Chicken Puff, all paired with the same garlic pepper sauce we had enjoyed earlier. The top tier offered sweet indulgences, such as light and crispy assorted Baklawa, dark and white chocolate-coated dates, Sweet Khamfroush (a saffron sponge cake-like dessert) and the same lovely Chocolate Date Cake from our last tasting. The Afternoon Tea is served with a choice of tea or coffee. We paired ours with Americano and traditional Gahwa, which complemented the treats beautifully.

Cinnamon In the Souq offers a charming blend of delicious food, cosy interiors and a welcoming atmosphere. Whether you're exploring the bustling souq or catching up with friends, this café promises a memorable visit worth repeating. ✤

Where taste meets artistry.

After months of meticulous planning, VIP guests and our partners joined the elite of the island’s hospitality and food and beverage (F&B) sector for an event at which we handed out more than 110 of our coveted awards.

We gathered in the fabulous surroundings of the Sofitel Bahrain Zallaq Thalassa Sea & Spa to recognise the Best and Favourite venues across categories ranging from newcomers to value-for-money and traditional to speciality offerings and regional cuisines. This record-breaking 15th edition attracted 550 guests and gave us the chance to pay tribute to those who help make the Kingdom’s dining scene both vibrant and entertaining, with well-thought-out new concepts continually emerging to excite healthy competition alongside our many much-loved stalwarts.

After the success of 2023’s inaugural Chef of the Year Award, presented purely on the basis of public online votes, it was no surprise that this category was, once again, extremely tightly contested with the honour, by a small margin, going to Chef Tala Bashmi, formerly of Fusions at The Gulf Hotel Bahrain Convention & Spa. As the voting closed, it emerged that Chef Tala has been designated by United Nations Tourism as a Special Ambassador for Gastronomy Tourism. We wish her all

the very best for the future and can’t wait to see what she does next.

As always, with the Fact Dining Awards, two winners were chosen in each of the other 56 categories – the Favourites, selected by a public on-line vote, and the Best, chosen by industry experts and the FACT editorial team.

And, like the Kingdom’s dining sector, we too are growing, with almost 900 nominations considered in the 2024 awards, many of which were suggested by our readership. No surprise then that voting was also at an all-time high, with 68,000-plus individual voters going online to support their favourites!

The plaque for Overall Favourite Restaurant of the year went to Salero, at The Westin City Centre Bahrain, a very popular spot and worthy winner. And the Overall Best Restaurant was, once again, won by CUT by Wolfgang Puck at Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay, which never fails to impress with its consistency of both quality and service.

FACT Magazines Group Publisher, Rami Khalil, said: “Every year, when we start out on this journey, I always ask myself, how can we make it better? How can we better serve the industry which is such an important part of who we are and what we do? The answer is always the same, this industry is what makes FACT magazine and these awards possible. The support from the dining sector and our readers and voters never fails to amaze and humble our whole team and we are, as always, so very thankful.”

A great deal of hard work and planning went into the event which was made possible with the support of our generous partners: Sofitel Bahrain Zallaq Thalassa Sea & Spa, Porsche Centre Bahrain, BMMI Shops, Vatel Hotel & Tourism Business School, Bidfood, Annoris Events, Asgharali, AQS De Parfum and HSP Marketing. We look forward to doing it all again in 2025. ✤

THE MAGIC OF FESTIVE MARKETS

Explore some of the world's best festive markets, from London to Germany, where Noel traditions, seasonal treats and holiday cheer come to life.

As the festive season unfolds, there’s nothing quite like the charm of a traditional Christmas market to ignite the holiday spirit. Strolling through these twinkling, snow-dusted havens, you’re transported into a world of handmade crafts, indulgent treats and heartwarming traditions. From the bustling streets of New York to the historic alleys of Prague, here’s a guide to some of the most enchanting festive markets to visit this season.

Germany

Renowned worldwide, Germany’s Christmas market tradition began in the late Middle Ages. Bathed in history and charm, each town and city has its own unique take on festive celebrations.

The Nuremberg Christkindlesmarkt, one of Germany’s oldest and most famous markets, is a bucket-list destination. Located in the city’s Hauptmarkt Square, it features traditional wooden stalls with red-and-white striped awnings, handcrafted gifts, decorations and sweets. Visitors can sample authentic Nuremberg lebkuchen (gingerbread), Spekulatius almond cookies and mulled grape. Don’t forget to pick up a handmade Rauschgoldengel (gold-foil angel) as a keepsake. It runs until December 24 and opens daily from 10am to 9pm, closing at 8pm on Christmas Eve. Frankfurt Christmas market is another popular favourite, celebrated for its festive decorations and live musical performances. Set against the backdrop of Römerberg and St. Paul's Square, it offers a variety of handcrafted ornaments, wooden toys and seasonal treats like Bethmännchen marzipan cookies. A towering Christmas tree and performances by local choirs and orchestras add to the magical holiday atmosphere. The market runs until December 22, from 10am to 9pm on weekdays and 11am to 10pm on weekends.

For a more intimate experience, visit the Reiterlesmarkt, set in Rothenburg ob der Tauber in northern Bavaria. Take a stroll through the winding cobblestoned streets of this mediaeval town, which transforms into a fairytale illuminated with festive lights. Enjoy traditional performances, storytelling and candle-lit walking tours. This market has been celebrated for over 500 years, making it a timeless favourite. It runs until December 23, from 11am to 7pm daily.

Prague

Prague’s Christmas markets are among the most picturesque in Europe, where Gothic architecture meets the sparkle of holiday lights. The Christmas market at Old Town Square transports you into a fairytale setting with the Church of Our Lady before Týn as its backdrop. At its centre stands a huge Christmas tree, adorned with thousands of lights, attracting crowds for a festive atmosphere of carols, music and dance. The stalls here are a treasure trove of Bohemian glass, ceramics, lace embroidery, wooden toys and hand-painted ornaments. Foodies can also savour

traditional Czech treats, such as rybí polévka (Christmas fish soup), trdelník (sweet chimney cakes) and perníčky (spicy gingerbread). Wash these down with a cup of delicious horká čokoláda (hot chocolate) or svařák, the local mulled grape.

Another must-visit is the Wenceslas Square market, a short walk from Old Town Square. While smaller, it offers a cosier atmosphere and a wide array of locally crafted goods. The market’s proximity to luxury boutiques makes it a convenient stop for those looking to mix traditional holiday shopping with high-end finds.

For a quieter yet equally magical experience, head to the Castle Hill near Prague Castle. This market not only offers stunning views over the city but also provides a peaceful retreat from the main tourist spots, with a selection of unique festive items and artisan crafts. The Christmas markets run until January 6, 2025.

London

London comes alive during the Christmas season, with markets scattered across the city. The Southbank Centre Winter Market is a must-visit, offering a stunning riverside setting by the Thames. Wooden chalets brim with handmade gifts, festive food and steaming mulled beverages. The aroma of roasted chestnuts fills the air, as you stroll past vendors selling cosy woollen scarves and quirky holiday ornaments. It runs until December 26. Another sprawling spectacle that draws visitors from near and far is Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park. Beyond the market, enjoy a festive extravaganza with live performances, a giant Ferris wheel and the UK's largest outdoor ice-skating rink. From Bavarian Fun House and Magical Ice Kingdom to Santaland Express Train, there’s something for everyone – it’s the perfect spot to have some fun and soak in the holiday cheer. It runs until January 5. If you’re seeking something off the beaten path, the Greenwich Christmas Market offers a charming, historic ambience. With its cobblestone streets and maritime backdrop, this market is perfect for finding one-of-a-kind gifts from local artisans. It runs daily from 10.30am to 5.30pm and you can enjoy Christmas carolling throughout December.

New York City

New York City may be famous for its towering Rockefeller Christmas tree but its festive markets are just as iconic. At the heart of Manhattan, the Union Square Holiday Market is a quintessential stop for locals and tourists alike. With over 180 vendors, the market offers everything from handcrafted jewellery and artisanal candles to speciality food items and holiday decorations. Each stall bursts with festive cheer and live performances add a musical touch to the crisp winter air. The market runs until December 24. For a more European-inspired market, head to Bryant Park’s Winter Village, set under the shadow of the New York Public Library. This market runs until January 5 and offers over 170 boutique-style stalls situated around a

picturesque ice-skating rink. Warm up with festive mulled drinks or indulge in international bites like Swiss raclette or Argentine empanadas. As evening falls, the illuminated skyline adds a magical backdrop to your shopping spree. And don’t miss the Grand Central Holiday Fair, a smaller but equally charming market located inside the iconic Grand Central Terminal. Running until December 24, it’s an ideal option for avoiding the biting winter wind while perusing luxury gifts, artisan foods and unique souvenirs. ✤

BIG SCREEN Gladiator II Dune: Prophecy

Need to Know:

Gladiator II is an epic historical action film directed by Ridley Scott. Taking place around 20 years after the original movie, the film’s events are set in an era marked by brutal tyranny and the corruption of a deceitful Roman Empire that’s calling out for a new hero.

Director: Ridley Scott

Cast: Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal, Denzel Washington, Joseph Quinn, Fred Hechinger, Derek Jacobi, Lior Raz, Connie Nielsen

Why Is It Worth Watching?

Gladiator II marks the long-awaited return to Ridley Scott’s monumental world of Rome, since the exhilarating fivetime Academy Award-winning epic – Gladiator (2000). At first, a sequel to the movie simply sounds like a terrible idea. But with Ridley leading the charge once again, there’s hope the film’s been handled with the same level of care and vision as the original.

Picking up around two decades after the events of the last movie, the Roman Empire is still reeling from the consequences of Commodus’ death and now finds itself in even worse shape under the rule of tyrannical twin emperors.

Exiled to the rugged coast of Numidia, Lucius (Paul Mescal), the son of Lucilla, has found some peace, leading troops alongside his skilled archer wife, Arishat (Yuval Gonen). But their lives are shattered by a brutal invasion from a Roman naval fleet, commanded by General Acacius (Pedro Pascal). In the attack, Arishat is killed and Lucius is captured and sold into slavery. Delivering an epic narrative pulsing with action, emotional intensity and visceral visuals, this gripping new chapter is a triumph in transporting viewers back to ancient Rome’s chaotic power struggles.

But with Ridley Scott leading the charge once again, there’s hope the film’s been handled with the same level of care and vision as the original.”

Creators: Diane Ademu-John, Alison Schapker

Cast: Emily Watson, Olivia Williams, Mark Strong, Travis Fimmel, Jade Anouka, Chris Mason, Jodhi May, Josh Heuston, Tabu

Why Is It Worth Watching?

As audiences eagerly anticipate Denis Villeneuve’s third Dune film (which currently seems a long way away), HBO in the meantime looks to appease fans with the intriguing prequel TV series to the Dune (2021) movie.

Dune: Prophecy, based on the 2012 novel Sisterhood of Dune by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson, manages to transport viewers back to the vast and complex world of Frank Herbert’s iconic science fiction saga.

Set thousands of years in the past and a far cry from the familiar storylines of Paul Atreides and the desert planet Arrakis. The series uncovers the untold stories of the galaxy’s formative battles and the figures who shaped its destiny, as the foundations of the great houses and their bitter rivalries are still being laid.

It mainly highlights the mysterious Bene Gesserit – a secretive matriarchal sisterhood with extraordinary mental and physical abilities that allow them to control and manipulate the politics of the universe from behind the scenes. The plot follows two fierce Harkonnen sisters, who become key players in the creation of the Bene Gesserit order and how they intertwine with the Atreides’ bloodline to influence the fate of the family and the galaxy at large.

ROCK

Songs of a Lost World

By The Cure POP

That’s So True

In a much-awaited resurrection, the British rock band The Cure marked their comeback with the release of the latest studio album, Songs of A Lost World. This 14th album comes after a palpable gap of 16 years and has eight tracks, totalling just over 49 minutes.

It seems to pick up where the band left off almost two decades ago. The songs evoke the same music and emotions that fans connect with, giving them a seamless experience and taking them back to the good ol’ days. Co-founder, lead vocalist and guitarist, Robert Smith, has written all the songs, which infuse the band's themes of melancholy, existentialism and mortality, but in a more lived and experienced form. The first track, Alone, is a perfect example of how rock music can age well and stands out as the model of quality some music is lacking today. Warsong and All I Ever Am are pensive and sober, exemplifying the band’s preoccupation with life’s realities without ever sounding weary. This is shown to the hilt with And Nothing Is Forever, A Fragile Thing and I Can Never Say Goodbye, which grapple with ageing and death, especially about Smith's personal experiences.

Smith’s vocals and guitar strumming have remained steady, a testament to the singer’s true talent. The album is a moody ode that stands true to the band’s musical style and essence. Its songs, while being realistically morose, could also be seen as a harbinger of the band’s impending retirement.

That's So True is the latest single from Gracie Abrams' second album, The Secret of Us . The song debuted when she performed it live with Audrey Hobert during her album tour.

The track, which has become an unexpected hit, much to the surprise of the singer herself, is an exploration of heartbreak and all the feels that come with it. It goes through all the motions of grief, jealousy at seeing the new girl, vengeance towards her ex, a brief moment of sympathy, selfrealisation and finally acceptance. That’s So True is an acoustic melody that is easy to vibe with and is relatable with its lyrics and rough guitar strumming. Gracie wears her heart on her sleeve with her lyrics as she makes no effort to hide her agony. With lyrics like: “Made it out alive, but I think I lost it. Said that I was fine, said it from the coffin. Remember how I died when you started walking? That's my life, that's my life,” the song brims with raw emotion. It has been praised for its bridge, which has powerful imagery.

The album's first single, That's So True , gives a positive sneak peek, making fans hopeful for the rest of the tracks.

What We’re (Still) Talking About

It’s A Dog’s Life

Here at FACT, we love our canine pals just as much as the next person. Some of us, even more so. But, we’ve spotted a couple of news bites (pun totally intended) this month that have had us wondering if we’re actually neglectful dog parents. First, there was the fashion PR from one of our favourite luxe brands, Malo, the Italian cashmere people, telling us that their line of ultrasoft sweaters and blankets for our four-legged friends has added a range of new colours, such as aqua green and sunny yellow – with a donation going to Animal Park – the shelter of the Municipality

of Florence, the brand’s home. Then we spotted another doggy treat (sorry). Coming in November 2025, the ship Margaritaville at Sea Islander will play host to a sailing, organised by Cruise Tails and Expedia Cruises of West Orlando, on which an expected 250 pooches and their humans will set sail from Tampa on, what’s thought to be, the world’s first dog-friendly cruise. There’ll be gifts and samples from top vendors, dog shows and training, guest speakers, costume contests and parades and pet butlers (read poop scoopers) for each cabin.

Now, our dogs want to know what they’re doing wrong!

Out Of Touch

So, apparently, the word ‘demure’ has been announced as the 2024 Word of the Year, having topped dictionary.com’s annual list, courtesy of TiKToker Jools Lebron, who went viral after she posted a video using the phrase ‘very demure, very mindful’ when describing suitable looks for the office. Her vid clocked up more than 54 million views leading to a 1,002% increase in the use of the word online. Reading this made us feel a little out of touch. Could we possibly be the only people alive who didn’t know this video even existed? Cue extensive

investigation, AKA a Google search, to discover other Words of the Year. 2016 was ‘dumpster fire’ and 2017 ‘fake news’ – no big surprise there and no further explanation needed. And there have been some other crackers that definitely evoke a particular historical moment, such as World Wide Web, in 1995, and weapons of mass destruction, in 2002.

But our favourite has to be last year’s offering coined by writer Cory Doctorow –it’s a wee bit rude, so if you want to know, you’ll have to do your own research.

That’s Bananas!

We could hardly write a column that highlights the ridiculous without mentioning Comedian, the ‘artwork’ by Italian, Maurizio Cattelan. A simple banana duct taped to a wall, it excited much discussion and controversy when it was first revealed in 2019. And it hit the headlines again this month with the news that a collector has paid almost USD6 million for the piece! Yes, you read that right. Now, that got us to thinking ‘what really constitutes art?’ Many discussion pieces on this work have suggested it’s the artist’s way of poking fun at the high-brow

art establishment and making people question just what they’re looking at. We like that idea, since it makes the display seem a bit fun and a little less totally bonkers.

However, the USD6 million price tag did make us think that perhaps the ‘artist’ is having the last laugh, particularly with a certificate of authenticity that includes instructions for changing both banana and duct tape, after all, the original fiveyear-old versions would surely not be pleasant by now. We can’t help asking if that doesn’t mean the ‘owner’ will actually be creating a new artwork themselves as each fruit, unavoidably, goes rotten?
