There's No One Butter Than You

As you wish" – The Princess Bride

E

very year when Valentine’s Day edges closer, it gets me thinking about what this one day in the calendar that’s “designed” to celebrate love, means to different people. Is it spending time with your special someone, is it a reminder about all the important people in their lives, or is it simply a chance to exchange gifts and see which one of you put a bigger price tag on love? In a recent podcast episode by This American Life, the theme was apt for February listening – it looked at the unfolding of rom-com film plot lines: there’s a meet-cute (characters meet in an appealing way), then come obstacles (things stopping them from being together), there’s a “run towards love” where one character literally sprints through the streets to declare their feelings to the other, and finally there’s the end of the film which is usually the beginning of the relationship. And voila, you have yourself a rom-com. The podcast questioned how realistic this depiction of love is - how many of you have ran at marathon speed to the other side of town and proclaimed their love? (I mean, good for you if that’s how things went down!) – but I’m guessing that the majority of people have had less “Hollywood” versions of a love story. So, much like rom-coms, Valentine’s Day could well be seen as another commercial fad – but just like you fall for the story and invest in the protagonists of an on-screen romance, chances are that the hype around V-Day has also captured your heart (and pockets). And, when in Bahrain, you don’t do Valentine’s Day by halves. It’s all or nothing. To show you that we do indeed Love You A Latte, turn to p28 and read about some of the most romantic, cute, delicious, and extravagant offers to book this Valentine’s Day. There are dinner dates, spa escapes, luxury gifts, and so much more – there’s no shortage of ways to impress this month. This month, the FACT globetrotters have been on a series of great adventures around the world. We bring you the hidden gem of Asia with a very special trip to Taiwan (p46). Expect a healthy dose of fashion, beauty, food and wellness too. Also, the biggest news this month for the entertainment scene; British boyband Blue will be right here in Bahrain at the end of the month and, in all honesty, I'm just a little too excited to belt out all the songs at the top of my voice (p26). Sending love to all the couples out there. Singles, there’s nothing better than Netflix and Talabat. Until next time…☺

MASTER OF ART Transcending fine dining into high art, Yann Bernard Lejard has been named as the new Executive Chef of The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain luxury beachfront resort. DARING, UNIQUE, PLAYFUL, JUST A few words that come to mind when experiencing one of Chef Yann Lejard’s signature dishes. Like a modern-day disruptor turning the simplicities of food into plated works of our art, his talents have taken him across Europe, into major Michelin Star restaurants, before arriving to the region, first in Saudi and then to the Kingdom of Bahrain in 2014 where he assumed the role of Chef de Cuisine for the award-winning Plums restaurant. Proving his leadership with a promotion to Executive Sous Chef in 2016, in his new role as Executive Chef of the five-star Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain, Lejard will oversee a culinary team of 130 chefs, along with the menu creation and kitchen operations of the resort’s 11 restaurants, in-room dining and banquet catering divisions. Born in Paris, France, Lejard began expressing himself through street art, taking inspiration from the likes of modern art legend Jackson Pollock (1912-1956). Eventually becoming a chef by the age of 16, it was then where he found food to be a catalyst for artistic expression and where his signature, abstract style of “splattering” sauce on a plate was born. Fast forward to the era of social media, Lejard’s accounts @YBLinc have since amassed a foodie cultist following of 120k fans, and those who can’t wait to see what he does next. Bernard de Villèle, General Manager of The Ritz-Carlton, 12

fact magazine

Bahrain, said: “He is a master of art and a disruptor in the food scene with a following of admirers on social media to back it up. “He, as well, has the creativity and mastery to take our large dining portfolio to pure excellence. His hands on leadership and mentorship of the entire Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain kitchen brigade has been superb, so it was a natural choice to promote him to the next level,” he added. Before joining The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company L.L.C, Lejard held culinary positions in major Michelin Star restaurants, including working as a Chef Saucier for notable names like Heinz Winkler in Germany and Peter Knogl in Switzerland, as well as leading international hotels across 20 countries. After stints across Europe, his career eventually lead him to Jeddah where he served as the Executive Chef for Glow restaurant and where he became the first chef ever in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to become ranked by the award-winning luxury lifestyle and food magazine, FOUR UK. ✤

Isn’t It Romantic WHAT’S IT ABOUT:

WHAT’S IT ABOUT?

After losing her entire family in a plane crash, Stephanie Patrick decides to uncover the truth behind the tragic accident that changed her life. When she discovers the crash was not accidental, she makes it her mission to track down those responsible by assuming the identity of an assassin.

DIRECTOR: Reed Morano CAST: Blake Lively, Jude Law

WHY IT’S WORTH WATCHING?

An exhilarating thriller starring Blake Lively and Jude Law, The Rhythm Section explores the idiosyncrasies of life, love, family and identity. A story about justice and rediscovery, the film offers an addictive storyline as well as plenty of action and twists along the way to keep you hooked. After losing her entire family in a plane crash, Stephanie Patrick’s world is completely destroyed. Falling into a downward spiral of prostitution, drugs and drink, she discovers that it was a bomb that caused the crash. After being trained by the intelligence agency that recruits her, Stephanie adopts the identity of an assassin to get to the bottom of her family’s death. As she plays a number of different roles, she begins to fall in love for the first time with Frank White and is submerged in a catastrophic crisis of identity. Based on Mark Burnell’s novel of the same name, the grimly realistic and raw storyline will take you on a deep exploration of emotions.

Natalie, an Australian architect living in New York City has also believed that what she had seen in rom-coms is all fantasy. An accident leads her to wake up in a “PG-13 Universe” and she must escape every cliché to finally achieve her happily ever after and come back to reality.

–The Rhythm Section DIRECTOR: Todd Strauss-Schulson CAST: Rebel Wilson, Liam Hemsworth, Priyanka Chopra

WHY IT’S WORTH WATCHING?

A rom-com with a twist, Isn’t It Romantic gives the age-old concept of “happily ever after” an edgy makeover. Featuring a number of extravagant moments, an intriguing plot as well as an incredible star cast, the movie is a breath of fresh air when it comes to your usual romantic comedies. After being raised to believe that she’ll never have a romantic comedy experience, a near-tragic experience changes Natalie’s perspective and transports her to an alternate, romcom-esque reality. It’s now up to her to finally achieve her happily ever after and then make her way back to reality. What gives the film its cinematic edge is Natalie’s (Rebel Wilson) foul-mouthed character and her new PG-13 existence. The perfect V-Day flick! fact magazine

SOUL/R&B

Village

By Jacob Banks A musical narrative featuring daring fusions and intoxicating vocals, Jacob Banks’ first album is here and we couldn’t be more excited! Packed with stories from all the experiences Banks had growing up, the album pays homage to all the things that make him the musician that he is. A stunning blend of his love for soul, gospel and jazz, Village features influences from his African side to British youth culture. Pushing his stunning vocals to impassioned new heights, Banks’ gritty new track Chainsmoking talks about an irresistible love that is detrimental but addicting. A soothing mixture of old and new vibes, the mesmerising song is all about the sacrifices we make in love. Enriching the R&B, soul and hip-hop landscape, the album sees Banks venturing out of his comfort zone and showcasing his talent in ways he never has before. Kumbaya, the album’s first duet, borrows vocals from GermanAmerican singer Bibi Bourelly. Opening with a repetitive acoustic guitar, the song presents a rapturous harmonisation by the two singers. Halfway between a love ballad and campfire song, it delivers a message of love and unity. Showcasing a transformative vibe throughout the album, Jacob Banks is definitely showing a musical side we have never witnessed before.

Treat Myself

By Meghan Trainor

Exuding positivity and the importance of self-love, Meghan Trainor’s Treat Myself sets out to empower fans with its messages. Bringing her daring personality into the entire new soundtrack, Trainor sticks to her female empowerment ideals in her music. The title track, Treat Myself, inspires her listeners to give themselves a round of applause. Incorporating piano, bass and rhythm guitar, the track is definitely one of the bests on the album. Featuring one upbeat happy anthem after another, the album is definitely her best work yet. Featuring a groovy beat that drives the whole song, Let You Be Right carries a serious yet vibrant vibe. Its disco-inspired beats will have you wanting to throw on some roller skates and hit up a skate rink! The All About That Bass singer has surely grown since her debut and has injected a more mature sound to her delivery. With the release of her newest soundtrack, Meghan Trainor is ready to prove herself as a real pop contender.

A fiercely imaginative novel about a subject that rings so true today, Lost Children Archive talks about a family’s summer road trip across America. A mother and father set out with their kids from New York to Arizona on a journey that turns out to be so much more than just a road trip. Told through the voices of the mother and her son, as well as a number of collected texts and images, the novel sheds light on the nature of justice and equality in America today.

THE NATURE LOVER Taroko Gorge Taiwan is a geologically active island, with Taroko Gorge being one of the most magnificent examples of a tempestuous mother nature at work! Over the last few million years, the Liwu River has cut through metamorphic rock creating a spectacular canyon accessible via safe, man made walkways. The Shakadang Trail snakes along the gorge with a gentle ascent, allowing breathtaking views of marble cliffs, tropical vegetation and the crystal clear river below. The entire trail is around 4km, taking roughly two hours round trip and passing through a Truku aboriginal village where you’ll have opportunity to pick up a souvenir. Qingshui Cliff En route to Taroko Gorge, take a quick pit stop at the spectacular Qingshui Cliff. This area has been designated as one of the Eight Wonders of Taiwan - so you know it’s pretty special! Take a leisurely stroll up to the observation deck, take your time to enjoy awe-inspiring views of the surrounding mountains and allow the fresh air to clear your mind; the best bit is yet to come! The anticipation grows as you approach the Qingshui Cliff observation deck, the walk is worth it; the vistas can only be described as monumental! The contrasting colours of dense tropical vegetation clinging to the metamorphic rock is reflected along the seashore in tones of blue and green. Needless to say the photo opportunities here are EPIC! The Promised Land Resort Escape to The Promised Land, a Mediterranean-style resort nestled within the unspoiled beauty of Hualien. The layout of the resort has been structured around a novel 2.2km freshwater lagoon, along which each guest room has a balcony view. The lagoon is not just for show, visitors and guests can hitch a ride to different parts of the resort via electric boat and enjoy silently gliding along under uniquely designed bridges surrounded by lush greenery, waterfalls and local wildlife. The resort’s activity programme has a host of traditional pastimes to keep you engaged including; aboriginal boat rafting tour, nature walking tours and multiple culinary classes.

THE CITY SLICKER Taipei 101 This impressive landmark is impossible to miss, towering above the city like a giant bamboo stalk! At 509m-high, Taipei 101 is one of the top 10 tallest buildings in the world. Take a ride in the high speed elevator up to the 89th floor where you can enjoy panoramic, unobstructed views of the city in all directions. Venture up to the outdoor observation deck to experience the al fresco thrill of 392m above the metropolis below. This outdoor observation deck is actually the third highest of its kind in the world, after Burj Khalifa and Canton Tower! Taipei 101 is also known as one of the city’s swankiest malls, with five floors of high-end retail indulgence. Ximending If you’re feeling more high-street than high-end, head over to the Ximending shopping district. Founded during the Japanese colonisation, this funky mecca for youth culture is known as the Harajuku of Taipei; it’s basically where all the cool kids go! THE HISTORIAN The National Palace Museum Unleash your inner Indiana Jones at The National Palace Museum and explore an incredible selection of the finest Chinese art and artifacts. It’s a miracle to think that some of the most delicate porcelain, calligraphy and paintings made it to Taiwan from mainland China after surviving the ousting of the last Chinese emperor, an invasion by the Japanese and a cultural revolution! One of the most popular attractions is a tiny handcarved cabbage, specifically ‘bok choy’! It doesn't sound that exciting and it’s a little underwhelming, but props to the unknown sculptor - it took an incredible amount of skill to carve a tiny bok choy from one piece of jadeite, plus the story behind it has a little romance! Historians say that it was probably a gift for the emperor’s new wife symbolising purity and fertility. If using all that brain power has worked up an appetite there are some excellent choices for lunch; try Silks Palace for traditional Chinese cuisine with a modern touch and superb value for money. Liberty Square & Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall As you enter Liberty Square, the first thing that hits you is the magnitude of the Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall. Inside sits a gigantic statue of the man himself watched over by unflinching sentinels. One of the highlights of our visit was watching the changing of the guards, which happens on the hour, from 9am to 5pm. The former political and military leader of Taiwan, Chiang Kai-shek has a dedicated memorial that houses a museum documenting his life and career, offering a glimpse into the life of Taiwan’s longest serving leader. Mazu Temple There are a whopping 15,000 official temples in Taiwan, each of them is not only a local centre of faith but a living museum of folk art whose collections include exquisite stone carvings, colourful paintings and elaborate wood decorations. The Lugang Mazu Temple is an excellent example of this with some of the most exceptional artwork created by renowned masters. Dedicated to Chinese sea goddess Mazu, the temple is a national historic landmark, standing the test of time for over four hundred years! Visit during the daytime to observe worshippers peacefully going about their mantras and mudras amongst an aromatic haze of incense.

THE FOODIE Jiufen Old Street Tip #1: come hungry! Jiufen is known for its network of narrow alleyways, packed with teahouses, street food vendors and souvenir shops. The atmosphere is alive with droves of people politely shuffling up and down the crowded paths, dipping in and out of an eclectic variety of shops. It’s a sensory overload with smells, sights and sounds coming from all directions; most eateries showcase everything from food prep to cooking at the shop front, enticing passers by with curiosity and wafts of delicious fare. One of the most iconic Taiwanese treats that you’ll encounter are Tea Eggs. They taste a lot better than they look (picture partly cracked eggs in simmering brown water). The eggs are parboiled in strong tea and Chinese spices, giving the usually white egg a brown-marbled finish and unusual sweet and savoury taste. Feeling adventurous? How about snacking on some snails - not your regular garden variety - these slimey little suckers are as big as your fist! Wash it all down with your choice of savoury oolong tea or kitchy sweet bubble tea. Xing Yuan Tea Farm A true foodie not only loves the delight of eating but also appreciates the finer details of cultivation, food origin, and gastronomy. There are literally hundreds of tea farms in Taiwan, one of the best being the Xing Yuan Tea Farm in Yilan County. Enjoy harvesting, dehydrating, rolling and drying your very own Oolong tea. While your hand-picked leaves are crisping up in the industrial dryer, put your feet up and feast on a teainspired lunch. Lastly, learn how to make smooth homemade matcha ice cream in under 10 minutes! fact magazine

THE EXPLORER Sun Moon Lake Imagine calm blue water, tropical trees, dense green undergrowth and a backdrop of interminable mountains; Sun Moon Lake resembles the perfect postcard picture. Take a short boat ride to Syuenguang Harbour where you can enjoy scenic trails beside the lake, and venture up to a higher vantage point for stunning photo opportunities. For the best views you’ll need to hop back on a boat and head to the Sun Moon Lake ‘Ropeway’ - this scenic gondola cable car ride glides smoothly over the treetops allowing for magnificent aerial views of Sun Moon Lake and the surrounding forest. Formosa Aboriginal Culture Village & Theme Park Bump up your daily steps exploring the park, experience a rush of adrenaline on one of the many park rides and enjoy some cultural displays and colourful Aboriginal dance performances; there is something for everyone to enjoy at this diverse theme park. The grounds of the park have been landscaped beautifully, and, if you’re lucky enough to visit during the Sakura (cherry blossom) season between January and March, you’ll be in for a treat! Shifen Sky Lantern The age-old tradition of releasing lanterns into the sky was once used as a signaling system before modern day communications; today sky lanterns are used in festivities all over the world. Each year, between February and March, Taiwan celebrates this deep-rooted folk culture during the prestigious Taiwan Lantern Festival. Visitors are in for a sensory treat with high-tech lantern displays, traditional Aboriginal dance performances, music and art. If you want to experience this historic custom first hand, we recommend you head up to Shifen Old Street, located in Pingxi District of New Taipei. This is the only area of Taiwan where sky lanterns are allowed to be released due to its sparse population and high altitude. This small town has become a magnet for locals and tourists with its network of alleys around one of the old rail tracks lined with sky lantern sellers, souvenir shops and eateries. Pick up your very own sky lantern for about 20 dirhams, paint on a personalised message, wish or prayer and the vendor will help you to release it into the sky! ✤

MERCEDES-BENZ GLS 400 MERCEDES-BENZ GETS IT RIGHT ONCE AGAIN WITH THE GLS 400. FACT TAKES THE CAR OUT FOR A SPIN...

• ISLAND RIDES

M

ercedes Benz has been producing vehicles for over a hundred years and in that time has managed to create some truly impressive offerings, including delightful models within the SUV segment. When we were invited by Al Haddad Motors to test drive the new GLS 400, we were most excited to thoroughly inspect Mercedes’s latest creation as well as to put it through its paces. Upon our initial exterior inspection of the GLS, we noticed that the front end has being redesigned, emphasising the dynamic character of the SUV. The rear too has been modernised with special attention given to the bumper and taillight features. With a length of just over five meters and both a width and height of almost two meters, the dimensions of the GLS ensure the best possible basis for providing seven passengers with ample space. Attractive highlights on the vehicle include the chrome roof rails and under guard that finish off the exterior with a touch of class. Inside the vehicle, the revised interior emphasises the first-class standards of the GLS. Attention-grabbing features include the newly designed instrument panel with semi-integrated 8” media display, a modified centre console with touchpad, as well as the new 3-spoke multifunction steering wheel that felt extremely comfortable in hand. Newly employed colours and trim elements add to the extravagant nature of this premium SUV. All three rows of seats allow for sufficient head, shoulder, elbow and leg room, ensuring a comfortable experience for all vehicle occupants. The diverse adjustment options allow for a high degree of interior flexibility, including a position especially for optimum usage of the luggage compartment. The volume of this compartment can be increased from 680 litres to 2300 litres, outdoing any and all of its European competitors. Luggage space will certainly not be an issue with this model. Thoroughly impressed with the aesthetics, fabulous features and attention to detail of the vehicle’s general design, we turned our attention to power and performance. The sound of the V6 biturbo engine is enough to excite even the most seasoned of test drivers and as we pulled off onto the roads, a small amount of pressure on the accelerator revealed the direct injection feature of the engine. This beauty has a beast under the hood that can produce 333hp (245 kW) and 480 N-m of torque from 1600 rpm. At the same time, the GLS 400 4MATIC boasts an environmentally conscious design, producing only 8.9 1/100 km (206 g CO2/km) and features an ECO start/stop function. In current times it’s important to know your car is producing the lowest amount of emissions as possible. The GLS comes complete with a nine-speed 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission, allowing for a smooth and efficient driving experience. With six transmission modes namely Comfort, Slippery, Sport, Individual and two Off-road modes, this SUV is more than equipped to handle any weather or terrain. moment that we didn’t feel in complete control. It is however, the safety features that make one feel completely comfortable in any vehicle. The driver assistance systems that have been fitted as standard include Collision Prevention Assist Plus, Crosswind Assist and Attention Assist. Other safety features include the Pre-Safe System, Brake Assist, an electronic all-wheel drive traction system with Curve Dynamic Assist, Cruise Control and Steer Control. The designers of this magnificent vehicle have gone to extra lengths to ensure safe travels for you and your family. After what can only be described as a wonderful day on the roads, we reluctantly returned the GLS to its rightful owners. AUDIO REVIVAL Your summer barbeques and pool parties are about to get a whole lot louder with Bang & Olufsen’s coolest new addition – meet the Beosound Edge…

T

he most insane sound quality and an amazing minimalist design in a conveniently compact speaker – this is what Bang & Olufsen is bringing to the table. The tech giant presented a new powerful wireless speaker that completely reimagines how we live with and experience sound. Created in collaboration with globally acclaimed designer Michael Anastassiades, Beosound Edge is yet another thoughtful design from the Danish luxury audio brand. Transforming everyday mundane to musical mastery, the Beosound Edge is surprisingly powerful despite its compact footprint. To deliver a commanding sound experience at high volume, Beosound Edge debuts a ground-breaking acoustical technology named the Active Bass Port. The Active Bass Port unites two classical concepts of loudspeaker design, the so-called “closed-box” design and the “ported design”. Apart from an incredible sensory experience, the Beosound Edge brings forward a timeless design masterpiece that has never been seen before in home audio. Adding an element of magic, Bang & Olufsen has built the physical touch interface into the aluminium frame by lasering microscopic holes invisible to the eye, just allowing light to shine through. To contrast the polished aluminium body, Beosound Edge comes with a matte black fabric cover, easily exchangeable, as Bang

& Olufsen will introduce new on-trend fabric colours over time. The Beosound Edge also comes with 360-degree room filling sound from both sides of the speaker, and the new Directional Sound Control allows the user to define the direction that the sound radiates creating two acoustic fronts. This ensures that a room can be divided into an active listening area and a more passive listening area. Controlling the directional sound is made easy through the Bang & Olufsen app. Allowing you freedom of connectivity, Beosound Edge comes with the major industry standard technologies to provide the best streaming experience. Enjoy the streaming service of your choice including AirPlay 2, Chromecast and Bluetooth. Ushering in a new generation of audio, clarity, precision and design, the Beosound Edge is a total game changer. Letting you skip, start and stop tracks with a simple tap on the touch sensitive aluminium surface, the speaker makes listening to music so much easier and gratifying. In the words of talent show judges everywhere: “It’s a yes from us!” ✤

For the Spring/Summer 2019 collections for men and women, Kenzo invites you to celebrate summer ceremonies, gatherings of all sorts and the jubilation of rituals. Occasions where new-romantic hedonists meet British wedding goers and all the in-betweens.

WOMEN For women, Kenzo goes high summer with aplomb. They adore effortless deconstruction and the delicately disordered. They match classic fine fabrics such as a flocked twill with georgette or create an effort in contrasts by matching saturated colours of acid yellow, cobalt or fuchsia with vivid prints of roses or checks. The archive dot prints on layered twill offers extra scope to a traditional summer dress. Coats are embossed with python prints or in pink vinyl. Cocoon bombers play against strict tailored jackets. Voluminous technical nylon dresses with covered buttons in lilac or orange offer ample opportunity for fluid movement. Guipure embroideries appear in Victorian tops or overlaid dresses. For women’s accessories, Kenzo introduces two new styles: the dot and the goody, infused in both the bags and footwear of rubberised chunky platforms and contrast kitten heels. Geometric earrings compliment the more ornate embroidered jewellery. ✤

TROUSSEAU IS AN ANCIENT CONCEPT FROM AROUND THE WORLD, A PERSONAL DOWRY OF THINGS A WOMAN WOULD BRING TO HER MARRIAGE. WE HAVE OUR OWN KEEPSAKE SITUATED ON THE FIRST FLOOR OF AL A’ALI COMPLEX GRACING US WITH ONE OF ENGLAND’S OLDEST PERFUME HOUSES, GROSSMITH. 68

BEAUTY Q&A •

How did you become a perfumer, and did you always knew you would become one? It may sound odd but I am not a perfumer! I discovered my perfume heritage in about 2006 through research into my family history as no-one in my family had ever mentioned the business. Having made this discovery in my fifties time was too short for me to learn to become a perfumer. We had to use the existing business experience and skills that my wife Amanda and I already had to revive the business and call on experts where necessary such as the team of perfumers at fragrance house Robertet, who specialise in the highest quality natural materials. Please tell us more about GROSSMITH and your collaboration with TROUSSEAU. We have learnt it was an idea on the side with friends. We had met Nancy Al Zain, founder and owner of Trousseau, as a retail customer at Fortnum & Mason in London. She had discovered our fragrances there and loved them as well as our story and asked us if we would consider working with her as our retail partner in Bahrain. What's the story behind GROSSMITH and how did this perfume house develop? Grossmith was founded in the City of London in 1835 by my great great grandfather John Grossmith. He farmed herbs such as peppermint and lavender and supplied perfume oils to other houses, as well as finding time to support the Reform movement

SELLING THE GROSSMITH PERFUMES AT TROUSSEAU IS JUST ANOTHER WAY FOR US AS A BRAND TO EXPRESS AND SHARE WHAT IS UNIQUE IN THE MARKET WITH OUR CLIENTS. WE LOVE PRODUCTS WITH QUALITY AND A STORY, AND THE GROSSMITH PERFUMES DO JUST THAT.” NANCY, TROUSSEAU

• BEAUTY Q&A and writing a book on the subject, ‘Government Upon First Principles’. His son John Lipscomb Grossmith who was trained as a perfumer in Grasse, in the south of France, created a range of fragrances evoking travel to exotic places, three of which, Hasu-no-Hana, Phul-Nana and Shem-el-Nessim, we have recreated in our Classic Collection. These fragrances established Grossmith as a titan in the world of perfume in the early 1900s with sales all over the world and warrants from a Queen of England, a King of Spain and the Royal Court of Greece. The second and third generation of family perfumers died in the 1920s and after 50 years without family members being actively involved in the business the company’s fortunes failed in the 1970s. The company was sold and became dormant in 1980. I discovered the dormant company in 2006 and with my family decided to buy the company back and revive it and, as they say, the rest is history! Every year there are so many new fragrances coming out, isn't it difficult to let your fragrance to be noticed amidst this vast selection of fragrances? How do you promote your fragrance? We rely on our perfumes speaking for themselves – their exceptional quality and authenticity mean that we now have a loyal customer base. Brands in the niche and ‘haute parfumerie’ sectors tend not to advertise but rely on word of mouth and social media as well as editorial. We post news of our activities and pieces about our fragrances on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter and our ‘fans’ and customers, as well as bloggers and other influencers, support and spread this news. It looks like you have to be creative not only in the craft of perfume making but the things around it as well, like the promoting of your perfumes. Did you create the labels of the fragrances by yourself as well? And how about the filling of the bottles and samples, is that all being done by your own hands? We have a wealth of heritage designs to inspire all aspects of our modern design and presentation. The form of our modern bottles and packaging makes reference to Grossmith’s Baccarat crystal, originally commissioned in the early 1900s, as well as to its beautiful Victorian presentations. A horizontal section cut through our Baccarat flacons makes a square shape with

chamfered corners – a shape which you will see in our labels, the lozenges on our caps and for our blotters. You will also note the oval shape of our Victorian bottles echoed in the shapes of our elegant, reeded, modern bottles. Our perfumes are bottled and packed by hand by a wonderful team in a studio in the picturesque village of Bourton-on-the-Water in the Cotswolds. Your fragrance BETROTHAL is one of our favourite scents, can you tell us about the story behind it and was it difficult to create? This fragrance was inspired by Grossmith’s ‘The Betrothal’ created to celebrate the engagement and marriage in 1893 of Princess May to the Duke of York. They later became King George V and Queen Mary. We had been working on a modern version when the engagement of Prince William and Miss Catherine Middleton was announced so we worked hard to enable a launch of the fragrance on the afternoon of their wedding. The voluptuous floral bouquet featuring rare and consequently expensive rose de mai and jasmine from Grasse dries down to a wonderfully silky, sensuous base of vanilla and woods. What do you find the most frustrating about the craft of perfume making? Genuine creativity takes time and the market is constantly demanding newness. Back in 1897 my ancestor John Lipscomb Grossmith said of a new fragrance ‘A new perfume is a rarity, and the perfumer who produces it may be likened to the astronomer “when a new planet sweeps into his [view]”’. We still share his opinion today and resist pressure to produce new fragrances every few months. Each new fragrance we launch has to be very special indeed. ✤

• FOODIE Q&A

Hello Necla! Tell us about Mama Istanbul and how it conceptualised in Bahrain... Mama Istanbul Cafe came about after I relocated to Bahrain to be with my daughter and my grandchildren - family always comes first! I’ve had Turkish businesses in the past, and soon realised that there was a gap in the market for a simple yet affordable Turkish cafe - and so Mama Istanbul Cafe was born. I come from a country where franchises are not really common place as people care more about familiarity and the feeling of being welcomed like a family member when they go to a cafe a place where all families can afford to dine at. Bahrain needed that. My cafe is local and I’ve always supported local businesses, so, I’m truly appreciative that Bahrain has opened its arms and enjoyed having a family-friendly Turkish cafe that they can keep coming back to. Why did you decide to pursue a career in the restaurant business? My entire life I have either had my own Turkish Cafe & Restaurant in Sydney, Australia or managed other Turkish dining outlets. It wasn’t a career that I decided to pursue, it was just what I naturally fell into when I immigrated to Sydney at such a young age. Luckily, I was also an amazing cook thanks to my mother who taught me everything I know. Talent passed down throughout the generations is important to me as the love is authentic and clear to see - which now shows through every dimension of Mama Istanbul. Tell us about your career path. How did you get your start? How and why did you open Mama Istanbul? 78

fact magazine

Basically my career began in Sydney, when I first immigrated from Turkey after getting married. My first job was at a Turkish Kebab shop and this initiated my thirst for exploring other areas within the hospitality sector. Later I opened my Turkish Cafe in Sydney, and a few years later I found myself expanding and purchasing a Turkish Restaurant that I also used to manage. After years of long hours I made the decision to semi-retire, and once my daughter and her husband started a family in Bahrain, I decided to move here. I am very passionate about my work so once my path changed and I began my new life in Bahrain - Well, I couldn’t sit still and I needed another business venture. With my daughter’s assistance we opened Mama Istanbul Cafe. We work as a great team together, and without her help I couldn’t have put my vision to life. Again, family is key.

FOODIE Q&A •

What's your secret to keeping customers coming in? You cannot beat kindness and a smile. People like to feel like family and have familiarity when they eat out - it makes them feel at home. If you can’t give this to customers, it’s hard for them to remember your cafe and have a memorable dining experience. We are insatiably in love with your homemade Baklava served with Ice Cream amongst others. What have been some of your most successful dishes, and where did they originate? My homemade Baklava served with Ice Cream is a huge success with my customers! My mother actually taught this to me from a very young age and without her I wouldn’t have the dedication and love that I have now that goes into making my Turkish dishes. The simplicity of Simit with a freshly brewed Turkish Tea or Turkish Coffee is also a favourite with my clientele. It’s just the perfect homely treat and fills the spot after a long day of shopping. Come and visit and see for yourself! The contemporary design showcased at your premise in Dragon City is beautiful and we’re thankful that we were able to grab a seat amidst your customers. What inspired this particular aesthetic? We just wanted to create a space that’s simple and not over the top, a modern twist with the raw treated wood and industrial lights against an Istanbul backdrop image just creates a warm welcoming atmosphere that’s not intimidating. ✤

ere’s the fact; there’s no shortage of fast food joints in Bahrain. But, what we do lack is hearty food made from quality ingredients. The kind that packs super indulgent recipes with zero regrets later. Enter Jack’s in Riffa and you’ll find the answer to your next moreish meal – a pretty tasty one too. Jack’s is a Bahrain based chain founded in 2016 under the umbrella of Alghalia Hospitality. It serves up delicious burgers, pizzas, and pastas. Decked out in a cool palette of black and yellow, Jack’s has immediate street cred from the moment you walk in. With words like “Chicken Crispy & Spiced” and “Classic Crust Loaded Pizza” inscribed on the walls, alongside the most important message, in our opinion: “Food Makes Me Feel Happy ☺” – Jack’s effortlessly nails the casual, neighbourhood feel that you want from your local go-to fast food eatery. The best thing? It’s crazy affordable! With a bold motto of “We Know What You Want” – Jack’s prides itself on providing diners with fresh, halal, high quality ingredients that are both yummy and easy on the pocket. Their menu is packed with variety and their portion sizes are more than generous. If you’re going for a hot handful of beef and bun, I insist that you try the oozing Jack’s Special Burger. Packed with juicy meat, turkey bacon and melting cheddar, plus a very lip-licking sauce – this is the type of burger to satisfy all your cravings. If you’re more of a poultry person, you’ll also be well taken care of. In fact, I really enjoyed the Fried Chicken Burger – it was hot, crispy, and crunchy, and ticked all the boxes for a good beef alternative. Up next was the dish of the day; Chicken Bites. Now, fellow food lovers, these are not your regular, run-of-the-mill, breaded excuses for nuggets or wings. Instead, what you’ll be faced with is a box of 14 – that’s right, FOURTEEN – pieces of hot, flavourful chicken coated in the most delectable maple sriracha sauce, resulting in the perfect balance of sweet and spicy. This might not be a combo you’re familiar with, but who’d have thought it – maple plus sriracha and you’ve got yourself a dazzling dish. Oh, and did I tell you the price? BD1.8 – I couldn’t be more in love with this place if I tried. Get ready for the ultimate in pasta dishes. with Jack’s patrons – and I see why after the first bite. There’s an excellent mix of sauce, the pasta is cooked beautifully and lovely light pieces of broccoli add a dynamic texture and taste to every spoonful. If you aren’t ordering this, you’re doing life wrong. Just try it! The Mac ‘n’ Cheese is a classic pleaser and I can imagine that kids – even those young at heart – will appreciate this cheesy goodness. A surprise for us had to be the Vegetarian Pizza. I know what you’re thinking. Pizza, and not even the one with meat? How about you take our word for it – the base is fresh and crisp and the serious zip of spice is just the kick you need from a decent veggie pizza. Jack’s delivers one that’s worth raving about. The sides are made up of all kinds of goodies like onion rings, loaded fries, cheese fries and much more. The boss move is to grab your sauce of choice and mix yourself up some dipping magic. So, so good. ITALIAN ELEGANCE

Precious stones never get old, rusty, or out of fashion, and in Bahrain’s hospitality scene, The Gulf Hotel Bahrain Convention & Spa is that charming jewel. The famous Italian restaurant, La Pergola by Giancarlo Perbellini is a similar story. FACT’s Layal Al Mahmoud re-visits the lovely venue to reminisce the indulgent taste of real Italian cuisine. fact magazine

ahrain is never short on new and existing restaurants and pizzerias serving the comforting Italian cuisine. But for a fine dining experience in a classic elegant ambiance, La Pergola at The Gulf Hotel is definitely one of the best. A flowering plant embellishes the crisp white table covers that shine bright against the Bleu Gitane of the leather armchairs. The windows that invade the majority of the back wall, fill your eyes with green from the hotel’s garden, while the wall on the other side brings the influence of the Mediterranean Sea with its wave effect. Finally, gentle music in the background wraps up what I consider a soft classy atmosphere. A welcoming chat with the restaurant’s manager and with his recommendations we settled for an array of dishes that should satisfy your cravings for the day. Soon after, the plates started to flow in a steady pace perfectly timed so that you get ready for the next one but not waiting for too long. Amuse Bouche lands first preparing our palates for what lies ahead; and the cute little crispy polenta is an explosion of flavours. Now, if you’re a bread lover like me you do not want to ask the waiter to hold the bread because you are on a low carb diet, life is just too short to miss on that perfect crunchy from the outside, soft from the inside white Tuscan bread served with black olive paste and salted butter next to squares of Focaccia and bread sticks. The first Antipasti to come our way is earthy and such a perfect mixture of textures and flavours with potatoes, mushrooms, and black lentils, a light puff pastry shell and an exquisite white sauce. The Vitello Tonnato is veal Carpaccio served with tuna sauce and boiled eggs, my partner thinks it’s the best in town. From the Primi piatti, the Burrata cheese is straight forward delicious with a drizzle of olive oil, freshly cracked black peppers, and mini cubes of fresh tomato... what a treat! When it comes to main course, the menu is full with many options ranging from Pasta and Risotto to fish and meat ending with a little section for pizza as well. From the homemade pasta creations, we opted for the ricotta stuffed Ravioli with spinach and Parmesan sauce; amazing if you are looking for a light main course. And if you like Salmon tartar, the Spaghettini platter is what you should ask for with lemon, chives and squid ink caviar. The slowcooked Veal Cheek served on a cloud of creamy mash potato and rich gravy is out of this world good and not very meaty, it is just right... perfect if you want to try braised red meat dishes for the first

time. And finally, since a great Italian restaurant must offer a real Italian pizza, we requested the Pomodoro Confit and Olives e Basilico; it was fantastic, just like each and every dish we dug into on this fine winter day. Time flies undetected and we are soon screening the dessert menu but being coffee lovers, the traditional Tiramisu sounded about right and of course a Panacotta is not to be missed, flawless texture with the crunchiest biscuit and drops of apricot jam along a spoon of creamy vanilla ice cream. This day cannot get any better! I am honestly struggling to find a down side to my visit, but none! Great food, friendly informative team, and a peaceful atmosphere; the next time you fancy Italian think La Pergola by Giancarlo Perbellini. Call to find out about their Valentine’s Day specials for a truly memorable evening. ✤

G

reat news for all lovers of Friday brunches on the island, LVB has decided to duplicate their famous Saturday brunch and offer it on Fridays too! The restaurant has refreshed its indoor space for a cosier, more intimate atmosphere. The new entrance into the venue is fresh and welcoming, and leads you into the outdoor space, called The Garden. It’s an inviting sight, dominated by beautiful olive trees, climbing greens, Spanish inspired tiles for flooring, and seating that includes cosy vino barrel shaped booths. Indoors, you’ll find dominant burgundy colours that pair perfectly with the dark brown of the tables and chairs, as well as more deconstructed vino barrels forming the perfect stage for an intimate dining experience. The bright yellow brunch menu offers a dazzling range of dishes that enable diners to savour Spanish and South American favourites, whilst also incorporating the best of other cuisines such as Mediterranean. Being a table service brunch, the freshness of every dish is guaranteed and those of us who are watching their figure will not have to summon a lot of will power to fight the great temptations you face in open buffet brunches. Each guest is entitled to a choice of five diverse tapas, one main course and one dessert. Oh wow, you will be spoilt for choice! So many good options but thank goodness we were four diners which means we almost tasted the whole menu. This is the beauty of coming in a group and we all know food is always yummier when shared with loved ones. I can recommend few of my favourites such as the baby spinach salad with ripened avocado cubes, crispy calamari with its delicious dip, chicken or beef skewers, zesty seafood ceviche, and the list goes on. All of them were presented artistically in rustic cookware, skillets and slate platters mixing the traditional with the modern. Egg dishes such as the eggs Florentine bring a brunch feel to a varied yet harmonised spread. The main courses were served to the backdrop of charming Latin beats provided by a live band and each dish looks more and more inviting. Black ink or traditional, the paella is a must, charred sirloin steak and spatchcock chicken; they were absolutely tantalising too! The modern presentation mirrors the measured approach to seasoning, which allows the ingredients and flavours to truly shine. The steak was seared perfectly and each bite was mouth-wateringly satisfying. The catch of the day proved to be a brilliant catch indeed next to a bouquet of summer vegetables and the perfect golden yellow sauce. When it was the time to select a sweet finale - and with four of us and five choices - we decided to skip on the caramel

crepe and vanilla ice cream. Traditionalists opting for the Crema Catalana will be wowed and if you were fortunate to visit the region of Catalonia in Spain, memories will come flying to the fore. The chocolate brownie is perfectly chewy and as rich as you expect it to be. The Banana and Nutella Fritoroll is a sumptuous combination of warm bananas oozing from the crispy crepe - like wrap. And the French toast is airy and light yet totally fulfilling. Not to mention that the range of drinks available to choose from was also a crowd-pleaser. What more could anyone wish for in a brunch? Quality ingredients cooked freshly and with the outmost perfection served in simplicity and elegance! Buena Vida - or ‘the good life’ – indeed! ✤

adjust strokes and pressure to suit the individual. Sticking to the traditional ways, we move onto the really cool step - the foam. My therapist uses a pillow case style cloth to produce incredibly huge volumes of lather (like at a foam party) and soaks the whole body with it. This is followed by unbelievably smooth soap being massaged into the skin (now the dead cells are gone, the fresh layer of skin will absorb all the soapy goodness like a sponge). To finish off I had a real Usain Bolt moment - you’ve got to go and plunge into the 12-degree pool. The trick is to do it quickly. I have never moved so fast in my life. I’m given ginger and honey tea, cookies and cucumber water in the relaxation lounge following the hammam treatment. All I want to do is have a nap. So, I guess this is why the ancient Ottomans and even the Romans bathed this way: the hammam offers a cocoon of warmth and well-deserved indulgence for busy people looking for an alternative to just a simple body scrub! Couples will be pleased to learn that Heavenly Spa is offering a beautiful array of Valentine’s Day offers to help you choose the right gift for your loved one. But they also have a Couples Turkish Hammam experience as well as a Couple’s Moroccan Bath treatment – both of which we would highly recommend if you want to spend quality time together whilst being pampered by a professional team in luxury surroundings. You’ll leave feeling refreshed and rejuvenated with supple skin – and bragging rights for visiting the biggest hammam in the country! ✤

H

ow often do you have a good scrub? I don’t just mean hopping in the shower and covering yourself in any old fruit-scented body wash but a really good scrub, one where, afterwards, your skin glows as shiny as jewels in the sun (or at least it feels that way). The answer is, probably not as often as you should. That can all change now with a visit to the biggest hammam experience in town - the Turkish Bath at Heavenly Spa. FACT was invited to try out the traditional hammam package which, as my tellak (personal hammam therapist) explained, “removes the layer of dead skin from all over your body”. I was shown to the iliklik - the transition area where you begin with adjusting to the heat. Feeling brave, I took a dip in the 38-degree plunge pool for a few minutes – it feels like a huge warm hug from head-to-toe – before being led into the gigantic hararet (hammam hot room). My therapist checks if I have any heart or blood pressure conditions that she should be aware of, a professional ask that makes me feel even more comfortable about letting a stranger scrub me down. I’m lying on the huge heated marble bed and she begins the allimportant neck-to- toe exfoliation with a loofah glove. It feels strangely relaxing and a few minutes in I can literally hear the layer blocked by all the dead skin gasping for air - out with the old and in with the baby-soft new – I couldn’t wait to see the results. The scrub down is very meticulous – I don’t feel like a single inch of my body was missed. If you have any sensitivity issues, be sure to mention them to the therapist who will be more than happy to

Time To Focus Yvonne Cole is a Personal Trainer and believes that when you eat clean, train hard and trust the process, your consistency and patience pays off.

By now the New Year’s resolutions rush to hit the gym should be over and only the real focused people will be left to give you more space to workout. But getting that summer body isn’t just about the gym life, nutrition plays a very important part and if you don’t sort out your nutrition don’t expect to have the beach body you’re hoping for. With all the information that is out there, what to eat for the body you want can be a little overwhelming, but what you should do is just find something that suits you and stick to it. Not jump from fad diet to fad diet and then complain that nothing works when you only gave it two weeks. Sit down and make a plan, this will include making a shopping list so when you go to get groceries you won’t be walking around like a headless chicken not knowing what to buy and then end up putting processed junk in your trolley. Once you have all the good stuff at home, meal prep if time is an issue for you. Meal prep is making your meals ahead of time in tupperware, these can range from smoothie bags to dinners. There is no right or wrong way to meal prep, it’s up to you. You can cook complete meals and then heat them up or you can just put all the ingredients together and cook once you get home. Happy eating! ✤

Romantic Revelry Georgina Jennsen is the lady behind the popular lifestyle blog, blonde in bahrain. a social media influencer who loves all things luxurious.

Valentine’s Day is a little bit different in our house. This comes from having a hubby who was born the day prior, on February 13. We like to celebrate his birthday with a slap-up dinner in his favourite restaurant, and being the day before Valentine’s Day, are often surrounded by empty tables. It must look like we’re getting our romantic dinner date in early, to avoid the rush. This year will be even more different, as we’ll be holidaying in my hometown of Melbourne. If you’re celebrating Valentine’s Day in Bahrain however, I can think of a few fabulously romantic restaurants that would be just perfect. The magical Mahonia tucked away in Adliya is numero uno on my Valentine’s Day list. The space is divided into a cigar lounge & a restaurant with the most deliciously detailed food and divine decor with oversized candles, gorgeous glassware, and original artwork on every wall. And if that’s not romantic enough for you, the service is similarly wonderful, with wait staff who are attentive, knowledgeable and engaging. But you need to be quick with making a booking, as this intimate space includes only seven tables. Masso is another restaurant that I’d recommend for a romantic night out, with its soft lighting, cosy corners and consistently delicious food. Whatever way you choose to celebrate Valentine’s Day this year, may it be filled with much love. Xx ✤

daughters and telling them how successful my day was. They look up to it. What are some of your favourite cultural hotspots in Bahrain and why? Bahrain is very diverse when it comes to hotspots. There are the heritage and historical spots like Aali Mounds, Khamis Mosque, Beit Al Quran and the many forts. Also, I am always excited about new events where I can meet new people (pop up markets, workshops and public beaches). Such places are the rich source of inspiration, real people with real stories that we can all relate to.

Share with us some of your professional goals 2019? As a member of the White Nights team, I believe in simplicity. But it requires a lot to find simple solutions. One of the goals is to introduce simple, minimal and functional designs and solutions to the businesses. Also, working in the industry and region for the past 20+ years, we are keen to introduce the local flavour and identity to our clients. Bahrain is small and very diverse and our mission is to make Bahrain visible in this busy scene. Ultimately, I aim, with White Nights, to work on a product for a client from early stages, from positioning, naming, to packaging and POS and visual merchandising.
