ongratulations. If you're reading this, it means you've done the one thing we collectively hoped for: survive 2020. Even the New Year’s Eve celebrations at Times Square saw Gloria Gaynor befittingly perform “I Will Survive” alongside the usual festivities. Coincidence? Of course not.
The coming months will be unpredictable, to say the least. Our resolutions are likely to evolve beyond 'eat less, exercise more' as a result of a complicated 2020, a topic that forms part of our fascinating conversation with the beloved Bohemian Fatema, who talks self-love and holistic wellness in the latest instalment of Health Matters (p36). And as we continue to ask questions that not many can answer, our cover story (p14) attempts to paint a picture of life in 2020. It delves into the dietary preferences, dress codes, colour combinations, wellness practices, and travel trends that will likely be prevalent across the months ahead. Elsewhere in the issue, we prematurely break our New Year's resolutions to cook more often by making pitstops at a new Spanish eatery (p58) and one of Bahrain's oldest Mexican restaurants (p50) before indulging in Our favourite tradition of Friday brunch (p54) – all in the name of research, of course. But would this issue even be complete without the FACT team taking a ride around the island? This time around, we get behind the wheel of a Porsche Cayenne GTS for an adrenaline-packed test drive (p40). You'll want to fasten your seatbelts for this one.

SCENT STORY Join us as we explore a line of fine fragrances created from a rather unexpected ingredient: Japanese wood.
S
ushi, tea ceremonies, forest bathing, kawaii culture – the world is truly obsessed with anything that comes out of Japan, and for good reason. There's something fascinating about a tiny archipelago made up of almost 7,000 islands that manages to dominate the worlds of fashion, pop culture, technology, automobiles, and more. What we never expected, however, was to discover a Japanese fragrance brand available right here in Bahrain during a mindless scroll through Instagram, but we're glad we did. Named Kitowa, it was founded in 2018 and develops its products using natural oils extracted from precious Japanese woods. It is centred around incense manufacturing as Japan has a 450-year-old incense heritage that the company is perpetuating, and utilises the essence of naturally grown wood to create the likes of incense sticks, perfumes, and even bath essences. And if the appearance of bath essences in its portfolio feels odd, it's because onsen is not only the Japanese name for a hot spring, but also a term that covers the bathing facilities and traditional inns frequently situated around a hot spring. As

a country with no shortage of volcanic activity, Japan is known for its countless hot springs that contain healing properties. At Kitowa, there are three different bath essences to choose from: Hiba (aomori cypress), Hinoki (Japanese cypress), and Kusunoki (camphor tree). The brand turns to these tree varieties for their excellent durability – they've long been used for the construction of wooden buildings. We're told that these trees are very rarely introduced abroad, and are therefore unfamiliar to people who do not live in Japan. Sharing the same names are Kitowa's luxe, unique fragrances that are housed in sleek and minimalist bottles topped with – you guessed it – wooden caps. The scents of these comforting, woody formulas have a noble presence and are deeply rooted in the life of the Japanese. And with Kitowa now offering same-day delivery in Bahrain, what are you waiting for? ✤

ROLL WITH IT It's official – contemporary Japanese cuisine has a new address on the island. The opening of a swanky new eatery is always cause for celebration, and this is only heightened when Sofitel Bahrain Zallaq Thalassa Sea & Spa plays host. The hotel has announced the addition of a brand new dining destination, Maison Sushi, to its gastronomic carousel. Rooted in contemporary Japanese cuisine, it pairs reimagined traditional dishes with French elegance and a splendid backdrop of the Arabian Gulf. And the man behind the magic? The newly appointed Chef de Cuisine Myo Zaw Khine, a veteran of Japanese cuisine who boasts over 20 years of culinary experience. His vision is to take traditional ingredients and techniques from Japan, and integrate them with local ingredients and palates to offer a truly imaginative experience. Maison Sushi has perfectly encapsulated the East-Asian essence of delectable dining by focusing on locally sourced ingredients, intuitive service, and a rich ambience that together bind the culture, flavours, and vibrancy of Nihon – with a hint of French art de vivre, of course. As its name suggests, the new fine-dining destination features a sushi-inspired menu boasting exclusive creations bursting with innovation – whether it is the special torched-and-seared Otoro sushi (made with the coveted bluefin tuna) or the signature sushi platter, an exceptional dining affair is guaranteed every time. 10

And if you're the type to snap before you savour, the venue also promises Insta-worthy plating to boot. Chef Myo’s deep-rooted ideology dictates striking a fine balance between flavours and textures as an essential component, with a relentless “no-compromise” code on spectacular presentations to win over guests, so even the most discerning diners are in for a treat. For a front-row seat to all the action, make a beeline for the ultra-modern conveyor sushi belt and enjoy the freshest assortment of East-Asian fare that is not only prepared live, but also follows the full set of ALL SAFE measures. But regardless of where you end up, you can soak up the opulent interiors that bring together oak floors, wall art from the Yayoi period, and a super stylish bar. Meanwhile, floor-to-ceiling glass encircles the restaurant and overlooks the turquoise waters of the Arabian Gulf, streaming sunlight in during the day. Come sunset, the dimly lit venue radiates with rich tones of gold and royal blue, creating a regal ambience that's perfect for your next night out. ✤

FOOD FOR THOUGHT Having recently opened up in the heart of Muharraq, Cinnamon & Pretzels is the snack central we never knew we needed. Cinnamon & Pretzels doesn't beat around the bush. Cosy and casual, it brings together both sweet and salty nibbles under one roof – just as its name suggests. Its owners are passionate about creating new recipes, working hard to create a local concept that is not only affordable, but also meets world-class standards when it comes to quality. Start with one of the savoury pretzels; it might just become one of your favourite midday munchies once you get your hands on one. With options ranging from garlic and parmesan cheese to jalapeño, sea salt, and even pepperoni, all the pretzels here are freshly baked, prepared to perfection, and served hot. Plus, Cinnamon & Pretzels makes its own homemade sauces (think: honey mustard, ranch, and pizza) that perfectly complement the pretzels and kick them up a notch. On the opposite end of the taste spectrum is the wide selection of sweet treats. Ever had a cinnamon roll reminiscent of a hug? The soft, warm, and chewy cinnamon rolls at Cinnamon & Pretzels come straight out of the oven and onto your table. Even 12

their scent is intoxicating. A must-try? It's a toss-up between the Signature Cinnamon Pecan Nuts and Pistachio Cinnamon varieties. But it gets better. Because we don’t always have time to ‘stop and smell the roses’, the café has created both bite-size versions of its various pretzels and the ingenious Cinnamon On The Go that's convenient to carry. And washing it all down is everything from milkshakes and mocktails to tea, cold coffee drinks, and a whole host of beverages for those on a health kick, which feature lesserseen ingredients such as hibiscus and beetroot juice. The Zero Express deserves a special mention as far we're concerned. If you think iced coffee can’t be paired with cinnamon, pineapple juice, and sparkling water, think again. ✤

olour is a visual language that people process without being consciously aware of it, allowing different hues the power to alter our moods, impact how an item is perceived, and even brand our own identity. They shape a place or support a visual with warmth, coolness, darkness, brightness, similarity, or contrast. Colours add emotions to your objects and, once again, Pantone is setting the emotional tone for the coming months with its colours of the year: Ultimate Grey and Illuminating, which has been described as a “cheerful yellow”. This is the second time in Pantone’s history that it has broken tradition by presenting us with not one, but two colours. This marriage of hues conveys a message of vigour and optimism that is both enduring and enriching. We think we speak for most of our readers when we say that we couldn’t wait for 2020 to end and, while there’s no guarantee that 2021 will be any brighter, it’s imperative to hold onto hope for a better future. "Practical and rock-solid but at the same time warming and optimistic, this is a colour combination that gives us resilience and hope," is how Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Colour Institute, explains the union of grey and yellow.
exact feeling this illuminating yellow aims to evoke – happiness – so keep looking for that ray of sunshine as you incorporate this lively colour into your everyday life, knowing there’s always light at the end of the tunnel.
This or That “As society continues to recognise colour as a critical form of communication, and a way to symbolise thoughts and ideas, many designers and brands are embracing the language of colour to engage and connect,” adds Laurie Pressman, Vice President of the Pantone Colour Institute. There are countless ways to incorporate these trending colours into your life. Add a bright-yellow sweater to your wardrobe, add an industrial-chic accent in shades of grey to your home, or simply change your phone cover. The two colours don’t always have to be used in unison, and one can always be favoured over the other depending on your mood. ✤
17-5104 Ultimate Grey This subtle grey hue heeds caution as we enter the new year. It was elected for its qualities of fortitude and reliability. It’s strong, sturdy, and neutral – just like the average pebble. It’s not exactly fancy, but it’s also not modest. The colour is usually linked to demise, sadness, and gloom, and this shade of grey isn’t too far off. 2020 was an ongoing series of unexpected events, economic downfall, and a near-collapse of the global healthcare system, and Ultimate Grey reminds us to be grateful for what we have. Simple and a little reminiscent of a clean slate, it can also be characterised as the calm after the storm, emphasising peace and balance – something we’re all seeking in the 2021.
13-0647 Illuminating If you’re looking for an easy way to cheer yourself up this year, look no further than the colour yellow. It evokes feelings of joy, positivity, and enthusiasm. If you want a visual representation of those emotions just think back to the Minions, those goofy yellow cylindrical characters that dominate the Despicable Me series. Didn’t just thinking of them put a smile on your face? This is the fact magazine

2020 was a year that called for athleisure – and lots of it – alongside DIY beauty treatments, dressing from the waist up, and focusing on eye makeup as lipsticks everywhere sat neglected for obvious reasons. But between the prevalence of working remotely and seemingly endless days of wearing face masks in our future, don't expect 2021 to look drastically different when it comes to fashion and beauty. Here's a peek into what's ahead. 18
fact magazine
COVER STORY •
All by Myself A collective cheer was heard across the country when salons reopened, but the likes of DIY waxing and at-home hair colour will continue to prevail across the globe. The reason? People are still cautious about exposing themselves to situations where getting up close and personal is required. That means (even) more views for DIY beauty tutorials on YouTube and TikTok – using socks for soft hair curls is surprisingly effective. And along those same lines, spending more time at home will translate to wearing less makeup, and focusing on skincare instead. Heavy coverage, overcontouring, and permanent eyebrow tattoos will be replaced with lightweight foundation and more natural beauty looks.
Easy Does It But first, comfort – there, you've just discovered the dress code of 2021. Athleisure will continue to dominate fashion as several parts of the world continue to live in partial or complete lockdowns circa now. But we're unlikely to spend the months ahead in sweatpants. Instead, a relaxed sensibility will take over, so expect to see the likes of quality loungewear, sweater vests, less structured suits, and wide-leg trousers on the runways and in high-street stores. Our sartorial choices will be more practical, too. No one knows when life will return to normal – if ever – so think classics, wardrobe staples, and seasonless items that you won't regret later.
Him, Her, Them Unsurprisingly, unisex jewellery will continue to gain traction in 2021, as celebrities like Shawn Mendes and Harry Styles prove that restrictive mindsets towards gender are changing. And major fashion labels are keeping up. Bvlgari’s B.Zero1 Rock collection is edgy, cool, and glamorous, while Louis Vuitton's LV Volt pieces feature sharp lines contrasted by soft, smooth contours in order to
offer infinite combinations for seamless mixing and matching. The key to pulling off gender-fluid jewellery? Keep it simple. This is not the time nor place to pile it on, and a slightly industrial finish works best.
Nip/Tuck Just like maskne, covidiot, and quaranteam entered our everyday vernacular in 2020, so did 'Zoom face' – or an acute awareness of all the little imperfections on our faces that we were previously oblivious to, courtesy of all those video-conference calls. But it wasn't just women opting for cosmetic procedures like Botox, fillers, neck liposuctions, and tightening facelifts. Men got on the bandwagon, too. Experts predict that the trend will carry over into 2021 as not only will meetings and social celebrations continue to occur virtually, but Zoom face sufferers will also want to exploit the downtime to recover at home without having to disclose what they've had done.
Opposites Attract "Of course," is how jaded people responded when Pantone announced grey – Ultimate Grey 17-1504 to be exact – as 2021's colour of the year. After all, a colour associated with gloom and doom felt like an apt choice after the year we've just survived. However, it has paired grey with Illuminating 13-0647, a shade of yellow selected as the two together represent "strength and positivity". What this means for your wardrobe is that more appearances by these hues as the fashion industry looks to Pantone as the global authority on colour trend forecasting. In fact, some fashion houses are way ahead of the curve. Several shades of grey were spotted on Balmain's Spring 2021 runway, while Prada's Spring 2021 collection was set against an allyellow backdrop. ✤ fact magazine

Food
The pandemic has transformed our relationship with food in more ways than one. Who could’ve predicted that we would spend 2020 learning how to cook, stress-baking, and making dalgona coffee instead of running to Starbucks? homebodies now find comfort in recreating their favourite dishes at home – and what better way to do that than with a virtual cooking class? Even fine dining and celebrity chefs are evolving, embracing the likes of Zoom and Instagram in order to connect with foodies on a more personal level.
Spice Makes Nice According to annual trend forecast Pinterest Predicts, “bland is banned”. Professional and home chefs are bringing the heat to the kitchen with spiced-up recipes and zesty creations because salt and pepper are just not enough anymore. Last year was full of spicy noodle challenges and the growing popularity of YouTube web series Hot Ones, and it looks like we’re not satiated yet. Adding a sense to adventure to our everyday meals with be the likes of habanero, chipotle, pasilla, and jalapeño – and the Carolina Reaper if you’re truly daring. Can you handle the heat?
Veggie Vibes Global lockdowns gave Mother Nature a much-needed breather – carbon emissions plunged, the waters of Venice were clearer than ever, and nitrogen dioxide air pollution dropped in China. But the ongoing climate crisis is not to be ignored in 2021. More people will see the need to think sustainably in their eating habits as a way to bring the planet to its former glory, especially as meat alternatives such as tofu and soy milk become more accessible to the masses. Fast food chains are also jumping on the bandwagon, so expect to dine on the McPlant Burger and Beyond Italian Sausage Pizza in the months ahead. ✤
Get On Board The term “charcuterie board” may not roll right off the tongue, but households around the world have developed a palate for it – and they’re only getting hungrier. Customarily hosting an assortment of meats and cheeses, these boards are getting an upgrade. In 2021, you’ll see everything from breakfast items, chocolates, fruits, and fast food transformed into charcuterie platters as it’s a fun, easy, and easily customisable way to serve a small group of people.
Middle Ground Put 'flexible' and 'vegetarian' together, and you have one of 2021's most popular diets: flexitarian. The idea behind this way of life is to take a less rigid approach to eating, focusing on plantbased meals, but not giving up animal products entirely. Easy to maintain, a flexitarian diet advocates reducing one's consumption of meat through global movements like Meatless Monday and adding more plant-based ingredients when cooking. Good for your health, good for the environment.
Press Play So it seems cook-along classes are here to stay. While everyone was getting acquainted with their kitchens in quarantine, chefs around the world were getting acquainted with technology. The notion of dining out has changed immensely, and a lot of fact magazine

Interior Design
Being stuck indoors for most of 2020 has made us realise the importance of having a home that is equal parts fashion and function. Our homes have become our sanctuaries, and it seems this will be case for millions of people in the months ahead, influencing the following interior design trends.
22
fact magazine
COVER STORY •
Au Naturel Speaking of inserting a slice of nature into your home, 2021 will see the rise of natural elements in furniture as well – rattan and cane pieces have skyrocketed in demand and continue to be the anchor of many brands' new collections. “Modern whites and shimmering silvers have a become a thing of the past. Now, it’s all about bringing in earthy textures with bio design furniture,” says interior designer Manahil Mirza. Bio design, to put it simply, is furniture made out of living materials such as fungi, algae, or yeast. Furniture or this sort, teak wood end tables and rustic dining tables included, layers beautifully and is only enhanced by the addition of indoor plants. Incorporating wooden elements also fosters a connection with nature whilst promoting sustainability.
Change of Scenery A home needs to be able to adapt as the family changes and grows, and new homes will now be designed with this in mind. Making the most out of spaces can be done through non-permanent walls that can be shifted or rooms that can be opened up and shut off as needed. “Not everyone has the space to convert areas into fullblown offices or playrooms in their homes, so most clients want multifunctional spaces as a solution,” adds Manahil. These trends can also be seen in shows like Tiny House Nation through the use of sectionals and carpets, both simple and comfortable ways to divide a space into two without comprising on the look and feel of the room. Other options include adding loft beds or placing a small office desk in the corner.
Go Green Those of us who made it through lockdown without a garden have come to appreciate the value of all things green. Outdoor areas are becoming increasingly popular, and people are making sure to make any backyard or balcony into a liveable environment, especially as connecting with nature can help one’s mental health. And if you’re an urban dweller living in small apartment, then there’s always options such as indoor plants, growing your own
herbs, and design elements like large windows to connect your home with the outside world.
Think Rural The Cottagecore aesthetic – think: doilies, floral prints, and leather-bound books – will continue to gain popularity in 2021. It’s essentially the design trend equivalent of your grandma’s living room. Brought about by nostalgia and a need for comfort, this style pairs printed wallpapers and quaint throw pillows with touches of glamour, like statement gold accessories, to create a lavish living space. Looking for add a touch of cottagecore to your home? Invest in an antique or two, drape your dining table with a patterned tablecloth, and pretend that you’re out foraging with a wicker basket in tow.
Work and Play Working from home became the norm in 2020, and it looks like this lifestyle will follow us in 2021. Many companies have already announced permanent remote working situations, and ping-pong tables and second family rooms are now being converted into home offices of sorts. We discussed the proper way to feng shui your workspace in our November issue, so be sure to look to those tips as we enter the new year. Not only will a dedicated workspace promote higher productivity, but it will also allow you to separate your work life from your personal life, making sure one doesn’t overpower the other. ✤ fact magazine

Travel
Not-so-breaking news: the travel industry suffered tremendously due to the pandemic so, naturally, most of 2021's travel trends have been shaped accordingly. While many of us are still debating how far we'll go to board a flight – to vaccinate or not to vaccinate? – we say now is the time to keep hope alive and start planning your next adventure.
24
fact magazine
COVER STORY •
High Time Countless people found themselves frustrated in their attempts to change or cancel their travel plans without incurring fees in 2020, giving rise to a whole new trend for 2021. With uncertainty still very much a part of our everyday lives, hotels and airlines have no choice but to offer a lot more flexibility – something expected to (thankfully) continue in a post-pandemic world. Customerfriendly practices like clear cancellation policies and refundable accommodation will inevitably give travellers the confidence to book last-minute trips, so expect to be more spontaneous in the months ahead.
Home Sweet Home Staycations and domestic travel soared in popularity across the globe in 2020 as borders were closed, flights were cancelled, and travel bans were implemented. These restrictions gave us a newfound appreciation for our immediate surroundings, and experts predict the trend will continue into 2021 as international travel will take time to rebound. This 'think local' mindset will benefit not only local economies, but also the environment. Sure, the beaches of Bali, Phuket, and the Maldives are postcardperfect, but compare the carbon footprint if you visit your local beach instead.
Keep It Quiet When it comes to travelling in 2021, think rural – not urban. Nature tourism will be big in the coming months as most of us will bypass big cities (read: crowds of people) in favour of hiking, camping, stargazing, fishing, and even forest bathing. Cabin
rentals will be popular, as will beaches and ski spots in remote areas. People worldwide connected with nature in order to cope with the stresses of 2020, so it's no surprise that our appreciation for the great outdoors is only set to increase.
Safety First Not one day goes by without updates on 'that' vaccine, but the one that got frequent flyers talking was a recent move by Qantas – international air travellers will need to prove they've been vaccinated against coronavirus in order to board its flights, and other major airlines are expected to follow suit, making vaccine passports a reality in 2021. Travel will become (even) more complicated as a result of new health screenings and safety measures – think: temperature checks and pre-departure Covid-19 testing leading to longer wait times at airports. The upside of all this? More hygienic conditions in hotels, airports, and airplanes.
Slow But Sure With travel – like life itself – becoming more complicated, holidaymakers will want their escapades to be more meaningful. This means that we'll seek travel experiences that entail giving back in some way, be it through doing volunteer work or choosing sustainable accommodation and/or activities. Slow travel will also continue to dominate. Instead of rushing from one destination to another in a desperate scramble to update our bucket lists, we'll take the time to really connect with the culture, food, music, nature, and people of one. This, again, will translate to longer and fewer trips per year, thereby reducing our carbon footprint. ✤

Wellness
Yoga, spa visits, spiritual retreats, weight loss – the term 'wellness' is a broad one, with different people defining it differently. But one thing's certain: as the pandemic continues to wreak havoc across the globe, our desire – and need – for all wellness tools, techniques, and practices is higher than ever before. Hence the following trends. 26
fact magazine
COVER STORY •
Back to Basics Life may have gotten more complicated thanks to a little thing called coronavirus, but wellness is headed in a refreshingly simple direction. In 2021, we'll continue to find joys in the simple things like baking, bubble baths, and DIY skincare – just about anything that can be executed at home. More of us will also do less. That means bootcamp sessions will be replaced with yin yoga sessions, flexitarian diets will overtake restrictive diets, and we'll turn our homes into our wellness sanctuaries as opposed to shelling out for pricey vacations and retreats. Long story short, wellness won't feel as elitist as it did before.
Digital Detox The pandemic practically wiped out any hope for work-life balance, with many reporting that they were not only working longer hours at home, but also attending more (virtual) meetings and logging in at odd hours. Pair that with extended periods in the company of Netflix – yes, I'm still watching – out of sheer boredom, and we collectively suffered from dry eyes, prematurely ageing skin, headaches, and insomnia. The year ahead, however, will see us be more savvy about screen fatigue, setting healthy boundaries with technology in order to reduce screen time. But you don't have to go in search of fancy wellness retreats that enforce tech detox days. Start small by turning your cell phone off at the dinner table and ask your family to do the same.
Small Picture Gone are the days when all we tracked was our steps. In 2021 and beyond, we'll be micro-tracking, keeping a closer eye on things like pulse oximetry, heart rate variability, skin temperature, glucose monitoring, body composition, and more as technology in this area advances. It's no surprise that the latest generation of wearables will track stress and anxiety levels. Case in point? The Apple Watch Series 6. Not only does this nifty timepiece monitor your blood oxygen level, but with the help of the ECG app, it's capable of generating an ECG similar to a single-lead electrocardiogram. Cove, meanwhile, is a neckband that activates the part of your brain that regulates anxiety by using gentle vibrations behind the ears to trigger your body’s response to affective touch. What will they think of next?
Mind Over Matter Talking about mental health is no longer taboo as a result of the pandemic – high time, too. In fact, it now ranks high on our list of priorities as people worldwide have tackled stress and anxiety caused by unemployment, financial issues, loneliness, and ailing loved ones. As a result, awareness around practices such as meditation and journaling will rise, support groups and mindfulness apps will gain popularity, and turning to therapy will become the norm. And speaking of which: expect an upward trend in the likes of virtual therapy as the pandemic has proved that you no longer need to lie on a couch in a therapist's office to seek help.
The Great Outdoors Whether due to government-imposed lockdowns or just plain caution, we spent most of 2020 indoors, giving us a greater appreciation of the great outdoors. Fitness enthusiasts turned to al fresco sweat sessions, many skipping online exercise classes in favour of cycling, walking, running, and even stretching outside. And because necessity is not the mother of invention, gyms and other fitness studios will continue to offer socially distanced activities like yoga sessions on the beach or HIIT workouts in the park in 2021, thereby expanding their operations and keeping their clients safe in the open air. Win-win. ✤

A tale across the Arctic to warn a group of astronauts from returning home to a world amidst a mysterious post-apocalyptic catastrophe.
Creator: George Clooney Cast: George Clooney, Ethan Peck, Felicity Jones, David Oyelowo
Why Is It Worth Watching?
George Clooney directs himself as a leading man, as the world is silenced in this post-apocalyptic tale. The Midnight Sky follows Augustine, probably the last man on earth, in a mission to send a message across to a space shuttle in orbit and warn them not to return home. Seen wallowing with regret, he gains the courage to make the journey towards a stronger transmitter upon the appearance of a small but silent and mysterious girl. Based on the book by Lily Brooks-Dalton, this movie is more than a flashy apocalyptic thriller. It’s a redemptive note of hope and faith as the characters race through the Arctic Circle, overcoming horrific natural obstacles. The storyline piles on crisis upon crisis, from a fire in the observatory kitchen to spectacular restoration efforts in space – you’ll be left holding on to the edge of your seat. Although the film fails to follow through on some plotlines, the set design alone makes it worth watching. The glistening beauty of space is intoxicating, while the vast snowy terrains will give you chills.

A history lesson riddled with drama, scandal, and politics as we follow Lady Diana’s foray into public life.
Director: Peter Morgan Cast: Olivia Colman, Tobias Menzies, Helena
Bonham Carter, Gillian Anderson
Why Is It Worth Watching?
The highly awaited fourth season of Netflix's historical drama is all we can talk about – after all, this is where history gets interesting. The British royal family needs no introduction; they’ve lived in the public eye for as long as we can remember and, at this point, countless shows and films have documented life within the walls of Buckingham Palace. The Crown started off with season one in November 2016 and, like the series itself, its cast and storylines get better with time. Season four is a tale of three powerful women: Queen Elizabeth II, Margaret Thatcher, and Princess Diana. The Queen takes the backseat as these new additions rise to their platforms, with Princess Diana (played by up-and-comer Emma Corrin) remaining front and centre of both the season and history itself. Audiences journey from her 1981 engagement to Prince Charles to their whirlwind romance and an extravagant wedding that ends in marital misery. However, we’d be remiss not to commend Gillian Anderson’s role as prime minister Margaret Thatcher. Her voice, those mannerisms, that trademark bouffant – the depiction is spot on.

The app hosts over a million products, all categorised into sub-sections for easy browsing. Can’t find what you’re looking for? Simply submit your product on the app and the creators will get back to you with a rating and description. Admittedly, the accuracy of Think Dirty’s insights has been questioned lately, but it’s a start for those of us new to the clean skincare game.
Create a timeline of your life, starting with 1 Second Everyday. We’re serious – this is literally how the app works. It’s a great way to create timelines of the important moments in your life such as pregnancies, new homes, and baby’s first year to make sure that you capture each and every moment. You become the star of your movie, but without the stress of editing and complicated equipment. This app's beauty lies in its simplicity. It’s fun and it only takes – you guessed it – one second.

GOOD CALL So you’re in the market for a new smartphone, but with so many brands and models to choose from, where do you even start? Hint: here.
W
hen selecting a new device, you have to balance all of the features you desire from a smartphone with the limitations of your budget. We at FACT were recently introduced to the new OPPO Reno4 and felt the need to share our findings in order to hopefully enlighten you on what this impressive smartphone has to offer. The new design-led OPPO Reno4 series includes three variants: Reno4, Reno Pro, and the top-of-the-range Reno Pro 5G. For this review, we went with Reno4 to see what this smartphone delivers, even at an accessible level. Upon opening the box, you will find the Quick Start Guide, a Safety Guide (including warranty card), a transparent protective case, and a tool to eject the sim card. One layer of packaging down and you’ll find the phone itself, along with a USB Type-C Data cable and earphones. Priced at BD 149.9, the Reno4 smartphone comes in a choice of two colours: a Galactic Blue (that was developed together with Pantone Color Institute) and Space Black (with a specially designed OPPO monogram that appears translucent under light). The one we have for review in Galactic Blue colour. The front of the phone is made from Corning Gorilla Glass 5, ensuring its 6.4-inch AMOLED screen is well-protected. The back is made of plastic, while the frame is made from metal. With a height of 160.3mm, a width of 73.9mm, a thickness of 7.7mm, and a weight of 165g, this lightweight device is not on the small side, but feels comfortable in hand. Also noteworthy is the size of its screen, which is perfect for scrolling through social media, watching videos, or playing games. Now for the technical stuff. This classy piece has a display resolution of 1080x2400 pixels, with a pixel density of 409ppi. The 34

screen-to-body ratio is 90.7 percent, and the aspect ratio is 20:9. As for the Dual Punch Hole display features? OPPO is introducing on Reno4 an AI-enhanced Smart Sensor, located at the top left of the screen, which helps users on privacy protection and provides innovative and touch-free ways for users to control their devices. Platform-wise, the operating system is Android 10 and the user interface is Colour OS 7.2. Other features include a 2.3 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 720G processor and a RAM storage of 8 GB plus 128 GB ROM. An expandable storage of up to 256 GB is available via a Micro SD Card. As far as the camera is concerned, this phone boasts truly unique features thanks to its 48MP High-definition Quad Camera that includes a 48MP main camera, an 8MP ultra-wide camera, a 2MP mono camera, and a 2MP macro camera. The front camera is a 32 MP primary camera. We’d be remiss not to mention the following feature: with just one tap, AI Color Portrait on Reno4 makes the person in the shot highlighted in natural colour, and mutes the background colours into black and white. With additional features including Smart Spying Prevention and Gesture Control amongst others, we were thoroughly impressed after only a few days spent with the OPPO Reno4. With a decent 4015mAh battery that takes 20 minutes for a half charge – thanks to OPPO’s 30W VOOC 4.0 flash charging technology – and a price tag that won’t break the bank, you simply can’t go wrong with this one. ✤

t’s hardly news that the Swedes are renowned for their ingenuity, practicality, and mechanical prowess. Responsible for brands such as IKEA and Volvo, Sweden is also the birthplace of Electrolux. This multinational appliance manufacturer’s mission has been to shape a better living for people as well as to reinvent the taste, care, and well-being experiences for millions across the planet. Did we mention it has been around for over 100 years? The new Pure A9 Air Purifier is one of Electrolux’s latest offerings – and its purpose? Ensure your home is a healthy living environment. It has been designed to provide perfect air purification for any household, creating a powerful yet smooth spiral movement of air that effectively circulates and cleans the air content in every corner. Its PureSense system continuously measures the indoor pollution levels and responds to any changes in air quality by adjusting the air flow accordingly, ensuring you always return to a healthy indoor setting. With a five-stage purification solution, up to 99.99 percent of all bacteria and viruses are removed from the home or office. The Pure A9 releases silver nanoparticles that eliminate bacteria,
providing an antibacterial coating that protects all inhabitants. In fact, the ioniser releases 4.5 million ions in every cubic centimetre of air to deactivate bacteria and viruses. The Pure A9 is not only equipped with a touchscreen display, child lock function, and filter life indicator, but also boasts a WiFi module that enables remote control, as well as access to the full functionality of the system, via the Pure A9 smartphone app. The purifier offers two modes – Manual and Smart – and you can select your preference by simply tapping the Mode button. In Manual mode, the fan speed can be changed by touching the fan speed slider, whilst in Smart mode, the appliance will automatically adjust the fan speed based on the air quality level. Adding to the home-friendly nature of this device is how exceptionally quiet it is, producing such little noise that you’ll practically forget it’s there. ✤

W
elcome to a January like no other. Our New Year's resolutions have evolved beyond exercising more and eating less, courtesy of 2020, a complicated year that took a toll on the mental health of millions worldwide. One Boston-based clinical psychologist even referred to escalating mental health issues as a “fourth wave” of the pandemic. And with the likes of uncertainty, anxiety, and depression (rightfully) dominating conversations lately, it only felt apt to kickstart 2021 with a conversation with Fatema Majdi – a.k.a. Bohemian Fatema. "Like everyone else, I fell into an abyss," says the founder of yoga studio Bohemian Being, revealing the struggles she faced last year. "Teaching yoga was a form of therapy for me, and when the lockdown happened, so did my therapy. It was a hard phase for me emotionally – more than financially – as I launched my studio a week before the lockdown. My body got used to the energy boosts that my classes provided and, slowly, that energy decreased as the days passed by. Fortunately, I am blessed with very supportive students who pushed and helped me to start my online classes – that's when I saw the light at the end of the tunnel. I feel 2020 drastically challenged me to be more creative. It also taught me to not relay my therapy onto others, so I upped my practice of yoga and meditation." We're instantly curious about her yoga journey. After all, every yogi has a unique story about what led to their lifelong love affair with yoga, so we ask about hers. Fate, as it turns out, had something to do with it. "Discovering yoga came to me as a gift for going with the flow. I always used to have a five-year plan, but my first backpacking experience was entirely spontaneous, and I have never had that much fun in my whole life. That was the start of unlocking that go-with-the flow phase," she explains. "With the support of Tamkeen, I was given the opportunity to enter a portal of jobs all around the world in 2015. People find it very shocking that despite being given the opportunity to take a six-month job in any country, even the UK or USA, I chose India." Or did India choose her? "I applied for a job in the city of Vadodara, interviewed the day after, and arranged my visa the day after that. Five days later, I was in India. I worked there for six months before spending the following six months backpacking." Fatema recalls her first ever yoga class, which she attended during her fourth month in India. "One of my 13 flatmates in the twobedroom apartment noticed a yoga studio near our building, and she booked a private class at 6am for us all. It was very hard for me," she confesses. "I was out of breath, I was inflexible, and my mind was constantly wandering mid-meditation. However, I felt a sensation I couldn't describe, and I ended up being the only one who went every day at 6am until I left the city.” Visa issues meant she had to stay put. “If I left the country, I wouldn't be able to go back to India, so I had to settle in. I was very down during that time. The only thing I was doing was going to my morning yoga sessions until two of my flatmates wanted to cheer me up and get me off the bed, so they made me teach them yoga every day. That was the start of my love story. Teaching yoga was the blessing I wanted to share with the world. It felt like this is it – this is my purpose. Now, years later, I have had my 200-hour fact magazine

Vinyasa and Meditation Yoga Teacher Training from Indonesia and 300-hour Ashtanga, Vinyasa, and Pranayama Yoga Teacher Training from Spain. I’ve taught and been approached by royals, universities, and even athletes." Clearly, Fatema is a woman moulded by her travels. And at a time when most future travel plans are put on hold, we discuss her past travel experiences – especially those that have played a role in who she is today. "Apart from India and the gift of yoga that it gave me, my first proper solo backpacking trip was to Boracay, Philippines, in 2015." Candid about her innermost thoughts, Fatema explains how this trip abroad gave her a new lease of life. "Not many know this, but I grew up with a feeling, like I'm going to pass away on my last day in university. I know it may seem like a very dark thing to think about, but I'd always looked at it positively – like I truly have to live life.” That prompted her to purchase a 7am flight ticket to Boracay after submitting her final thesis online at midnight. “It all happened really quickly, too. I flew out without doing any research into what I could do there nor arranging any accommodation. When I arrived, I felt like I had been given a second chance in life, so I faced all my fears." She jumped off cliffs into the ocean, she ziplined between mountains. "That trip made me the fierce person I am today." It's no wonder that ‘self-love activist’ is one of Fatema’s many roles today. But does she ever encounter quiet moments of shaky confidence or self-doubt like the rest of us?
38
fact magazine
"Of course," she asserts, much to our relief. "Personally, I find it unrealistic to be on a high of self-love. I would break down several times and make sure I document it on social media, so people don't have this false image that I am constantly happy. I don't want them to idolise that naive state. I have bad days like anyone else. Some days, I'm not feeling my body. Other days, I'm not happy with my yoga progress. I live in that moment, I notice how I'm feeling, and I let that thought take the time it requires to leave my mind in order to love myself even more. It takes strength to deal with those emotions, and it's important to acknowledge that." As the conversation turns to social media, we'd be remiss not to mention her Instagram account. One glance at hers, and it's easy to see that she's creating a safe space in an often-unhealthy environment for her over 7,000 followers. And Fatema has some very practical tips for those who fall victim to the 'comparison culture' bred by social media. "Definitely start by unfollowing toxic accounts, people, and environments – both on and off screen," she advises. “Choose not only how you spend your time, but also your thoughts wisely. Another thing that has really helped me is journalling. I can't express enough how much writing your emotions down can help. I also encourage my students to notice three things they love about themselves – physically, emotionally, mentally – on a daily basis without any judgement." Unfortunately, Fatema is no stranger to facing social stereotypes around her body type. "I encourage normalising bodies because I can tell you this from firsthand experience: hearing that someone didn't expect me to be this flexible or strong because of my plussize body or being told that I seem fit in comparison to my weight is not a compliment. I want all body shapes to be viewed as one. At the same time, I also want people to fall in love with their bodies as it carries the whole universe," she says. Addressing all that confusion around the term 'body positivity', she explains, "Body positive is not about being plus-size and proud. It is being at any size and loving every inch of it with its perfect imperfections – whether it's weight, scars, rolls, moles, and everything in between." Scars, rolls, and moles – we couldn't agree more. ✤

e’re always up for a test drive here at FACT, but every now and then, we’re gifted with the opportunity to get behind the wheel of an exceptional brand. This month, compliments of the great team at Porsche Centre Bahrain, we were handed the keys to the new Cayenne Coupé GTS. Having already experienced Porsche offerings in the past – the Panamera, the Macan, and the 718 Boxster included – we knew we were in for a real treat. When taking in the front of the new Cayenne Coupé GTS, you can see it is characterised by its standard Sport Design front apron with black air-intake grilles. The standard dark-tinted LED headlights with Porsche Dynamic Light System are also in black and blend effortlessly into the car’s front end. At the flanks, Sport Design side skirts in high-gloss black are painted to match the rest of the exterior, as are the side window trims. The GTS logo – also in black – is present on the front door sills, whilst the 21-inch RS Spyder Design wheels in satin-gloss black add to the car’s powerful appearance, complemented by the red callipers of the standard braking system. The sharply slanting roofline with flow-through rear spoiler highlights the refined nature of the exterior design. This model features an adaptively extending roof spoiler, complete with spoiler lip that adds to its sporty nature. At the rear, the Porsche darktinted light bar runs across the width of the car and the model logo on the boot lid is finished in matt black. A unique Sport Design rear apron and diffuser add to this Cayenne’s muscular appearance, as do the black tailpipes of the new sport exhaust system. To finish off this impressive exterior, the roof of this Coupé is made from carbon fibre. Turning our attention to the interior, it was obvious that the same care put into the exterior design continued inside the cabin. The model’s black logo is featured on the stainless-steel door entry sills whilst the standard black-brushed aluminium package provides a black leather and Alcantara-trimmed interior that gives the GTS an exclusive feel. The eight-way adjustable front seats are comfortable, deliver the perfect driving position, and offer optimal lateral support during cornering thanks to the additionally raised height of the side bolsters. The multifunction sports steering wheel is rather large, but comfortable in hand, and comes complete with shift paddles. The analogue rev counter is also in black and features the GTS logo. Also sporting this logo are the headrests on the outer rear seats, where there’s plenty of leg, head, and shoulder room on offer for all those travelling in the back. The boot, meanwhile, provides 22 cubic feet of cargo volume that can be increased to 54.3 cubic feet with the rear seats folded flat. The Coupé GTS houses an intuitive display and operating concept called the Porsche Advanced Cockpit. The instrument cluster features the central counter flanked by two seven-inch HD displays. All key functions can be controlled by the driver via three core components, namely the 12.3-inch HD touchscreen of the Porsche Communication Management system, the touch-sensitive Direct Touch Control function in the centre console to interact with selected functions, and the multifunction steering wheel to control the onboard computer. There are plenty of Type-C USB 42

sockets located in the front that are illuminated to ensure you can easily find them at night. Wireless use of Apple CarPlay is also available. Performance-wise, we were thoroughly impressed with the 2021 Coupé GTS. This beast of a motor vehicle boasts a 4.0 litre, biturbo V8 engine that produces 453hp and 620Nm of torque. This, coupled with a Tiptronic eight-speed automatic transmission, translates to a machine capable of surging from 0-100km/h in just 4.5 seconds and 0-200km/h in 17.6 seconds. Thanks to the Coupé coming standard with the Sport Chrono Package, it has an impressive top speed of 270km/h. We spent the day effortlessly tearing up the tarmac and were struck by the excellent handling, cornering, braking, and sheer responsiveness of this superior vehicle. And, yes, it wasn’t easy when we had to hand back the keys. ✤

I came into a well-established hotel with a great team, but needed to build relationships and gain trust fast. Experience, like everywhere, was quite unique due to the pandemic and we all had to reset our way of thinking to get through – be it in the way of communication with our guests, clients, and our team or being creative in terms of our offering. It was a constantly evolving process. What was your single biggest takeaway at the end of 2020, both from a personal and professional perspective? It was an interesting year to say the least and, surely, one that none of us were expecting when we were setting our goals in 2019. With COVID-19 turning 2020 on its head, it’s safe to say that most of us learned a number of lessons. As we have moved on and found a semblance of ‘new normal’, here are the key takeaways that I value most: ♦ Our team is our most valuable asset. This was especially driven home as many of us faced the difficult challenge of letting dedicated employees go or sending them home and collaborating with them remotely. There’s a lot you can easily do on your own, but running and scaling a hospitality business is hardly one of them. Your team is worth their weight in gold and, after 2020, you likely won’t forget it. ♦ Being firm, but flexible. Flexibility is in the nature of a crisis that is constantly evolving, especially being part of the service industry. We need to be prepared to adapt and pivot our operations according to the latest updates. With that said, staying firm and true to our IHG corporate values is what keeps the wheels turning, whether we’re in a crisis situation or not. ♦ Prior to the pandemic, the simple blessing in life was often overlooked in favour of the hustle. However, postpandemic, the silver lining – time to relax, refresh, and recharge with family – became clear. 48

I don't usually make resolutions. I believe you need to make adjustment or changes as and when needed.
Out of adversity comes opportunity, if Benjamin Franklin is to be believed. After leading your team at Crowne Plaza through a highly complicated couple of months, did you find that to be true? Benjamin Franklin was definitely not thinking of COVID-19 when he said this, but our response to this significant disruption is our ability to share ideas, convey best practices, and develop and nurture relationships. We’re learning to solve problems faster, quickly using new ways of working and engaging our teams in high bandwidth collaborative thinking. One of highlights of this pandemic was the birth of our new outdoor venue The Backyard, which is an extension of the Harvesters Pub & Terrace. It’s an exciting new venue with great food, good music, interesting drinks, and openair seating – and it definitely seems to have grabbed the attention of local pub-hoppers. We also took this time to do soft refurbishments in some of our restaurants. Vaccine or not, travel and hospitality will look different in 2021 as a result of the events of 2020. What key industry trends do you predict? Health and safety is first on everyone’s mind, so if we keep that our priority, the trends would be: ♦ One of the biggest challenges for the hospitality industry in 2021 will definitely be restoring guests’ confidence. IHG’s 5-Step Program, IHG Way of Clean, supports IHG hotels with creating a culture of clean, so we’re enhancing the experience of our guests by redefining cleanliness and supporting well-being throughout their stay. Our IHG
Clean Promise is to ensure that our hotels provide a safe and clean environment. And with our exclusive brand service behaviour, Dare to Connect, we connect with guests and each other in more personal and thoughtful ways, which is crucial at a time like this. ♦ We’ll definitely see more tech-savvy travellers in the future. During successive lockdowns, most people took to technology to stay in touch with their loved ones, for entertainment, and even to order basic supplies. When travel is restored, our guests will show more openness towards technology, and will probably be more comfortable using it too. ♦ A lot of people will prefer al fresco dining and outdoor venues in a bid to avoid crowded and closed areas. ♦ Local and domestic staycations became increasingly popular last year due to border closures, with people looking for hotels within their own city or neighbouring countries to escape to. ♦ Lastly, there’s one thing we must never forget: people crave experiences. Whether they wear a mask or are separated by an acrylic sheet, the hospitality industry must provide unforgettable experiences – only with a heightened demand for safety now. New Year’s resolutions are meant to be broken – agree or disagree? What are yours? I don't usually make resolutions. I believe you need to keep moving forward positively and make adjustment or changes as and when needed, and not wait for a specific date or time. ✤ fact magazine

• CULINARY SPOTLIGHT speaking of: Dolly, who incidentally hails from Columbia, gave us all the attention while we waited for our mains. It made us feel at home. With a phenomenal voice and even more stunning aura, she briefly spoke about her experience as a Latina in Bahrain. “Working at Casa Mexicana has been one of my favourite experiences," she said. "Me and the owner go way back, and ever since she had me come join her in Bahrain, I've felt like I was a part of a family – from the entire staff to those loyal guests who continue to return on the days I'm on stage. Once I step into these doors? It’s like being back in Columbia!” And right on cue, out came sizzling our fajitas. We even got a chance to try the vegetarian option, Fajita de la Verdura, which was almost as good as the others. True to tradition, our fajitas came straight off the grill and right onto our table, accompanied by the likes of refried beans, rice, guacamole, and sour cream. One of the oldest Mexican restaurants in Bahrain, Casa Mexicana has steadily built a reputation for its authentic cuisine, live entertainment, and an incredible team that continues to maintain the quality of this beloved establishment. Whether you're out for a quick meal, an intimate gathering, or a carefree night out with friends, Casa Mexicana is the definitive host. As the saying goes: mi casa es su casa. ✤
C
onfession: Casa Mexicana threw us off from the moment we entered. From the chatter to the guests to the harmony of Spanish music in the background and the big smiles that welcomed us, we made our way into the main dining hall of this hole in the wall with zero expectations – only an appetite. Sitting directly opposite Casa Mexicana’s resident performer, Dolly, I needed to take a moment to soak in the surroundings and remind myself that I was in the heart of Adliya, not Mexico! With dim lights, rustic brick walls, and vibrant paintings depicting different aspects of Mexican culture, this restaurant's ambiance was the ideal mood-setter. I immediately knew that my friends and I were bound to have a good night. We let the hosts make all the choices for us on this night. After all, they were the professionals, and we were ready to dive into the full experience. The beverages were brought out first, and a special shout-out goes to the sweet-salty-citrusy taste of Guadalajara in a glass. And sombreros off to the strawberry flavour! You’ll need to definitely try it yourself to understand what we mean. Thirst quenched, we delved into the Platter Santiago to start us off. It brings together a selection of Casa Mexicana’s best appetisers, and you can opt for either the half or full portion, the latter feeding up to four people. I couldn't help but notice that the quesadillas were generously filled – a rarity – and made of the freshest flour tortillas. They're topped with pico de gallo and, let me tell you, even the first bite was bursting with flavours. I devoured mine in a matter of seconds. At this point, Casa Mexicana had all five of my senses on high alert – and we hadn't even reached the main course yet. And

y the time you read this, we'll be well into 2021, reflecting on how we managed to survive 2020 and asking questions about what the future holds. But today, I'm welcomed by an abundance of festive flowers in cheerful silver-coloured pots at the revolving doors of InterContinental Regency Hotel. My eyes dart around the lobby until I spot the beautifully decorated Christmas tree and, paired with the sound of Yuletide tunes wafting through the air, it sets the tone for what's ahead: a carefree feast with family. A mere steps up the stairs later, I find myself at the award-winning Legendz Steakhouse. Greetings are exchanged, all the necessary safety protocols are carried out, my reservation is quickly confirmed – and the enjoyment begins! As the dining area of this restaurant is cosy and intimate in nature, adding a sense of exclusivity, the team has set up stands for the main courses, side dishes, and desserts in the adjacent corridor. Alongside these are other mains such as short ribs and pulled beef lasagne, both equally appealing for the carnivores amongst us. But don't let the name of this eatery fool you. While Legendz has built a reputation for its downright succulent steaks, everyone's welcome, kids included. There's a dedicated stand where the likes of chicken nuggets, fries, and mini beef burgers are served. Struggling with a picky palate? Not here.Inside, a live pasta cooking station neighbours the cheese table, and the phrase 'match made in heaven' comes to mind. The bar is to the left side of the entrance, while the sushi selection occupies the area in front of the open kitchen alongside the display stand of this show's stars: premium cuts of meat, lamb chops, salmon fillet, and even Gulf prawns. I can't help but notice they're all safely shielded behind glass and served by hospitable staff whose smiles I sense, even behind all those face masks. My dining companions and I sit down and take in the surroundings, the dark wood tables, understated beige furnishings, and contemporary light fixtures contrasted by Christmassy tabletop arrangements. Somewhere between the elegant ambience and festive accents, I feel the stress of the week melting away. A whopping six different kinds of salad – one more interesting than the last – are served to our table. My favourite? It's a toss-up between the beef salad and the potato salad. When it comes to sushi, what you want is a selection that is achingly fresh. And that's precisely what you'll get, proving this brunch is a great choice from the get-go. It only whets our appetites further, so we order our steaks, opting for filet mignon and angus ribeye from New Zealand. Only minutes later, we receive our cuts of choice done exactly to our liking. They're juicy, they're tender, and they're 56

just as flavourful as you'd expect of this address. A few steps away, we find their perfect accompaniments: fluffy truffleinfused mashed potato, hearty roasted root vegetables, and caponata. The latter is a Sicilian dish, as I learn, consisting of grilled vegetables such as eggplant and zucchini. Pair it with a couple of pasta dishes, and you'll be reminded of why brunch is the best meal of the week. But is brunch even complete without dessert tipping you into unbutton-those-jeans territory? Hint: no. The extensive array of delicately prepared sweet creations here is incredibly hard to bypass. The chef, however, has other plans for us and a special surprise – molten chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream and fresh berries – appears out of nowhere. It ends the afternoon on a truly high note, and that's exactly why InterContinental Regency Hotel stands in a league of its own. The hospitality industry continues to face unprecedented challenges as a result of the pandemic, but this property rises to the occasion. Every time. ✤

larger-than-life mural of a bright blue bull at the entrance of a restaurant isn't exactly subtle, and it's exactly what we're seeking – an escape. The scent of tradition fills the air from the get-go at Salero, reminding diners that a wonderful alternative to boarding a flight to Spain awaits right here in Bahrain. Sure, nothing tops dining on classic Catalan dishes at a hidden little garden restaurant in Barcelona, but in the absence of any concrete travel plans, this recently opened restaurant is just the ticket. Located at The Westin City Centre Bahrain in Seef – no, not Adliya for a change – Salero is a culinary jewel that will take you one step closer to Spain through its extensive selection of tapas, authentic Spanish beverages, traditional tunes, and décor accents that add a sense of place. The split-level dining area isn't particularly spacious, but that's precisely what makes it so lively and inviting. It's hard to take your eyes off the statement wall here, so expect to see it splashed across Instagram accounts in the coming months, and for good reason. Brimming with primary colours, this cultural representation of Spain perfectly captures that passion that is so often associated with this Mediterranean country. Prefer to observe how your dishes come together? Ask to be seated by the open kitchen for a front-row view of the action. They say "too many cooks spoil the broth", but this couldn't be further from the truth at Salero. One of the few places serving 60

the likes of paella and patatas bravas, it is rooted in tradition and authenticity. Chef Jordi Bataller, who hails from Andalusia and delved deep into his mother's recipes and grandmother's cooking techniques as a child, spearheaded the menu. And executing his creations is Chef Juan Luis Pérez Moeremans, who also refers to the south of Spain as home. To say Juan has gastronomy in his DNA would be an understatement. Born to a Spanish father and Belgian mother, he spent his childhood in the kitchens of his family's restaurants, alternating between Marbella and Brussels – and learning plenty along the way. What their collective talents translate to is a menu boasting the likes of Paella de Pollo, Gazpacho Andaluz, Gambas al Ajillo, and Pimientos de Padrón. We took a cue from the Japanese and went down the omakase route, surrendering to Chef Juan and enjoying the element of surprise. Both the Croquetas de Setas y Trufas (or wild mushrooms and truffle croquettes) and Patatas Bravas (cubes of fried potatoes with aioli and chili sauce) are vegetarian-friendly and a musttry as far as tapas are concerned. The Ensaladilla Rusa Con Atún – Salero's take on a Russian salad – is a great choice for pescatarians as it pairs house-made preserved tuna with love and premium olive oil. And if you're a fan of the intense umami flavour of anchovies, the Boquerones en Vinagre, or white anchovies marinated in vinegar, are quite a treat. Paella is arguably Spain’s most well-known export and, let's face it, you can't really go wrong with this one, regardless of what type you order. Admittedly, a big reason behind our return to Salero is the sizzling Paella de Marisco, or seafood paella, which entails a decadent spread of prawns, cuttlefish, clams, mussels, and more, all tossed in perfectly seasoned bomba rice. Curious to try something a little more unexpected, we also order the tender Carrillada de Ternera. A true delicacy, these beef cheeks are slow-cooked over a whopping 36 hours – and not to be missed. Dessert turns out to be the most educational course yet as Chef Juan shares an anecdote about his childhood in Cádiz. Long before Nutella became a household name, kids across Spain were treated to pan con chocolate, an afternoon snack of chocolate sandwiched between two pieces of buttered bread. Healthy? No. Nostalgia-ridden? Definitely yes. At Salero, you'll dine on a delicious, elevated version called Pa Amb Xocolata. Brioche bread is toasted with a blowtorch then topped with dark chocolate ganache, olive oil, a touch of saffron cream, Ibiza salt flakes, and a sprig of mint – et voilà. An adult take on a childhood favourite. But why stop there? Our second dessert is the Flaó Mallorquín, a minty cheesecake that originated on the island of Mallorca – hence its name. It's so light that we didn't even realise it's made with goat cheese. At the time of writing, Salero is gearing up for its formal opening, and there's a lot to look forward to. Not only do we spot a DJ booth, but we're also told that flamenco dance performances are on the horizon. Spain – like most of Europe – is grappling with a second wave of the pandemic as we speak, making us even more grateful for Salero's arrival. It stands as a reminder of a carefree past and hope for a less complicated future. ✤

atthew Williams was a name that came up time and time again in 2020 – first for replacing Clare Waight Keller as Creative Director of Givenchy in June, then for presenting his first collection for the Parisian house in September. But it didn't end there. Just as the complicated year was drawing to a close, Givenchy dropped a ‘Teaser’ capsule collection at the start of December, making a slice of its Spring/Summer 2021 collection – the designer's first for the label – shoppable. “You find the pieces of the puzzle for a collection, building it from symbols and signs, but never forgetting the reality of the person who will wear it and bring it to life,” he said. At his version of Givenchy, hardware is key, uniting men and women and eschewing gendered notions of jewellery and accessories in the process. The Lover’s Lock, for example, is a unisex object of utility, decoration, commitment, and emotion. It's a sincere yet playful symbol of Paris, a nod to the lost locks of Le Pont des Arts. It's an object punctuated throughout this initial collection as both decoration and fastenings. Elsewhere, detailing continues to take centre stage amongst the playful, slightly subversive pieces for both genders. From the Tryp-Toe shoe and stockings to the Horn heel and a further examination of the Antigona bag, each is a play on – and development of – existing objects in the archive. These are joined by the new unisex Cut-Out bag in its many iterations, as well as the G chains, objects that are destined to add to the maison's history and interspersed throughout the new Creative Director's signature experimentation with technical materials. And balancing them? The traditional, the natural, the opulent. From the use of a cotton Ottoman in outerwear, technical taffeta in tailoring, and structured Punto di Milano jersey to evoke more pure forms in dressmaking, tradition is respected yet recontextualized. At the same time, an experiment in different densities of injected foam leads to an evolution of the slide – the ultra-comfortable Marshmallow slide is the footwear that underpins much of the collection, quite literally providing a casual foundation for many of the more formal looks. The study of casual archetypes continues throughout the SS21 collection, including new technical coatings of denim in both paint and resin, work that is as labour-intensive as the collection’s more traditional embroideries. It is a sign of Matthew Williams' Californian sensibility transplanted to Europe, him approaching the two sides with equal aplomb and rigour. ✤ fact magazine

What We’re (Still) Talking About Halima Aden
The Crown
Vaccine Passports
Somali-American model Halima Aden has made headlines for countless reasons over the years. She was the first hijab-wearing model to grace the cover of British Vogue, sign with IMG Models, and compete in the Miss Minnesota USA pageant. She also made history as the first Muslim model to wear a hijab and burkini in Sports Illustrated Swimsuit and has walked for the likes of Max Mara, Alberta Ferretti, and Yeezy. It's no wonder then that her recent decision to step away from the fashion industry has led to more eyes on her than ever before. The 23-year-old took to
The Crown is hardly new on the pop culture scene, but its fourth season has prompted all kinds of questions, conversations, and controversies. Opinions were fast formed about the miscasting of actress Erin Doherty (who plays Princess Anne as a bit of a tomboy), while the royal family is reportedly not pleased with the show's depiction of Princess Margaret's distant cousins – Katherine and Nerissa Bowes-Lyon – being abandoned by their family. Also making the news? UK culture secretary Oliver Dowden suggested that Netflix should add a disclaimer that the historical drama is a
A few months ago, Qantas divided opinions by launching a decently pricey "flight to nowhere" – which incidentally sold out in 10 minutes – and it's doing it again. Alan Joyce, CEO of the Australia airline, recently revealed that international air travellers will soon need to prove they have been vaccinated against Covid-19 in order to board Qantas flights, referring to the move as a "necessity". While Qantas is currently the only airline to require its passengers to be vaccinated before travel, industry insiders predict that others will follow suit. "I think that's going to be a
her Instagram account to reveal that the pandemic gave her time to reflect on her values as a Muslim woman – and how modelling often clashed with them. “I can only blame myself for caring more about the opportunity than what was actually at stake,” she said. “I blame myself for being naive and rebellious. What I do blame the industry for is the lack of muslim women stylists.” What the model will do next is anyone's guess, but we predict that the UNICEF Ambassador will focus more on her humanitarian efforts.
work of fiction. And the streaming giant's response? "We have always presented The Crown as a drama, and we have every confidence our members understand it's a work of fiction that's broadly based on historical events. As a result, we have no plans – and see no need – to add a disclaimer." However, the biggest question at this point remains: will Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's story be told? The two recently signed a massive deal with Netflix, and some reports suggest their contract demands that the show end before Megxit is depicted.
common thing talking to my colleagues in other airlines around the globe," he said. The decision has led to the term 'vaccine passport' entering our everyday vernacular. According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), a digital health pass – which will likely include vaccine information alongside details about Covid-19 travel requirements and restrictions – is the key to opening borders. The IATA Travel Pass is currently in the final phase of development, and is set to launch in the first quarter of 2021.

ISLAND INSIDER
Mahmood Qannati
Head of Marketing & Communications, Al Salam Bank January is usually a month associated with new beginnings, making and breaking resolutions, and making travel plans for the months ahead – but this is no ordinary time. What sort of headspace are you in as 2021 kicks off? I am going into 2021 knowing it's not going to be much different. The external challenges will remain and might even get tougher. Having said that, I have stopped looking at 2020 as an odd year – this is the turning point as far as new norms are concerned. In my mind, I'm adjusting to this being the new ordinary. Once you do that, you will be able to act upon it in your social and work life. Between virtual schooling, working remotely, and e-commerce more indispensable than ever before, a lot of industries recently experienced drastic 82

changes that are likely to be permanent. What can you tell us about how the banking industry evolved? I believe banks adapted extremely fast. This is because they realised the importance of digital years ago, and 2020 only helped accelerate the adoption. The other positive outcome of 2020 is that it helped those banking customers who weren’t comfortable with online banking to embrace it. The pace of banking digitisation will only increase from now on. The new challenge will be information security and scope of services. As banks all stack the same digital services to their arsenal, the competitive edge may become tactical offerings, such as interest rates and promotional campaigns. In my view, the winning bank will be the one that clearly identifies and establishes its
differentiated brand promise. Digital alone will not do that. 2020 was a year that forced us to spend a lot more time here on the island as leisure travel practically became non-existent. Did you discover anything new or interesting here in Bahrain as a result? Yes, absolutely. We never realised how amazing our hospitality industry is because we were never its primary target market, but in the last eight months, my family and I booked four staycations in four different hotels. The guest experiences, food, and facilities are exceptionally great. What’s even greater is not having to struggle in airports and face jetlag in order to enjoy a relaxing time with family. I encourage everyone to give it a shot and see for themselves.
