In a first of its kind, a speed-dating style networking event, SME Majlis (meet the big boys), between small and large companies, took place at the Bahrain Chamber of Commerce last month. Within two hours, 320 introductions were made between large companies and smaller suppliers discussing business opportunities. Each corporate was assigned its own Majlis, in a semi-formal arrangement, wherein the SME’s had 10 minutes to pitch their product or service and try to build new working relationships. Mr. Mohammed Almoayyed, Chairman of the SME Committee, said: “We decided that we wanted to do something different and beneficial for small and medium companies instead of bombarding them with lectures and training courses as per the norm. This event is our reaction to what the SME’s have been demanding of us: more access to the market, and more business. I would like to thank the entire committee, and especially Hamed Fakhro for his hard work in making this event a success.” Vice Chairman, Hamed Fakhro, added: “Due to the event’s success, this will be the first of an annual tradition, where large companies can give back to the community by doing more business with local firms, as well as explore what new innovations are out there.” The large companies who participated were: Viva, Zain, BDB (Bahrain Development Bank), GPIC, ASRY, Mohammed Fakhroo & Bros, YK Almoayyed, KPMG, Bahrain Duty Free, BAC (Bahrain Airport Company), Crowne Plaza Hotel, Gulf Hotel, Yusuf Bin Ahmed Kanoo WLL. ✤

Ladies Christmas Scramble Success

The Autumn Fair 2016, one of Bahrain’s largest and most popular annual consumer products exhibitions, is returning to the Bahrain International Exhibition and Convention Centre from January 26 to February 4. Held under the patronage of the Bahrain Ministry of Industry and Commerce, the show will cover a massive 15,400 square metres of space this year, where visitors can look forward to more choice, new exhibitors, unique products and thousands of potential bargains at this shopping extravaganza. Due to popular demand, the show’s duration has also increased from nine to 10 days, giving visitors an extra day of shopping fun. Over 750 exhibitors from 21 countries will showcase products from across the globe at the Autumn Fair 2016. A huge variety of goods will go on sale, ranging from specialty food, fashion and furniture, to technology, toys, textiles and much more. An outdoor children’s play area, a live band and costume characters also form part of the entertainment. ✤

Christmas came early this year for Sara Axtell, Jan Watson, Anne Kesterton and Sanne Smith when they won the Royal Golf Club’s ladies section annual Christmas Golf Tournament. The team achieved a nett score of 58.4. The dubious honour of having played the most golf went to Lady Captain Anne Quintino and team mates Jenny McDonald and Araceli Deakin who achieved a team nett score of 74.8. The ladies, most of whom wore Christmasthemed outfits, started off their festive activities with a putting contest using a chocolate egg at the Club’s practice putting green. This was followed by an 18 hole Texas Scramble golf tournament featuring a number of fun side contests including a best FootGolf shot of the day, most golf balls lost and shortest drive. The day was rounded off with a prize giving ceremony and traditional Christmas lunch in the Club’s Repartee Lounge with festive music, Christmas crackers and a Secret Santa gift presentation. Outgoing 2015 Lady Captain Anne Quintino thanked Sohail Singh, the Royal Golf Club’s Golf Events Manager, for putting on such a great day for the ladies. ✤

ARTS INTERVIEW

“My grandmother is a big influence behind my artistic journey; she always supported and nurtured the creative force that lived inside me from a young age.” Budour Al Ali, an Emirati artist who is known for her portraits of the Abu Dhabi royal family, is to have her work on display at Jannah Burj Al Sarab. The artist’s yearlong exhibition will be based in the lobby of the hotel located in the Al Zahiya/Mina area of the UAE Capital. The exclusive art display will showcase the spirit of the UAE through four collections, updated in each quarter over the year. This is a rare opportunity for guests, residents and tourists to discover the rich culture, heritage and folklore of the UAE through her artwork. The collection includes different elements of desert life, including falcons, Oryx and gazelles. The works will also give visitors a glimpse of cultural buildings and local handicraft. Additionally, three sketches of the Abu Dhabi royal family, which have been specially commissioned by Jannah Burj Al Sarab management, will be housed permanently in the hotel’s lobby. Here, Budour tells us more about her artistic tools, techniques and inspirations… Tell us about your journey into art… Before this path with canvas, colours and brushes began, I had jumbo crayons and scrap sheets of newspaper that my grandmother would collect for me to release my creativity. My grandmother is a big influence behind my artistic journey; she always supported and nurtured the creative force that lived inside me from a young age. It was later on that my loved ones saw that I viewed the world with a different perspective – that of an artist. Being creative and painting came naturally to me. ➻

ARTS INTERVIEW

“I develop my style throughout my journey as an artist; it is everevolving. In addition to realist movements, I fell in love with the idea of naturalism and realism...” It was my grandmother’s love that motivated and challenged me to continue improving; I always wanted to impress her with new paintings. She noticed how my interpretations of the world would trickle in every aspect of my life – from my bedroom to schoolbooks. From there, I continued to experiment with different mediums and forms of art.

GO: Prints, cards and accessories, such as bags and cushion covers, all featuring Budour’s art will be available for sale during the exhibition. The starting rate for the main artworks is AED1,700. Some of the proceeds will go to The Aounk Ya Yaman charity to support the health and education of poor and needy children in Yemen. Call (0)2 652 6777 or 800-JANNAH (800-526624) for more information.

44

fact magazine

Describe your artistic style for someone who views your work for the first time… I develop my style throughout my journey as an artist; it is ever-evolving. In addition to realist movements, I fell in love with the idea of naturalism and realism as a depiction of ordinary, everyday subjects. I have an identifiable and unique style which distinguishes my paintings from those of others, regardless of the subject of the painting. I’ve been told that this distinctive factor is the positive energy that my paintings exude. This can be immediately sensed in the colours I use, as well as the simplicity in my work. Tell us about some of the tools and techniques that you use in your work and why? I work with different mediums; I’ve even tried sculpting! Although I love it, I found it a bit difficult to continuously work on sculptures in the long term. I’m more comfortable with canvas, brushes and paint, preferably oil and watercolours. I can also work with other mediums like acrylic, ink and pencil. What are some of your favourite pieces that you’ve produced and why are they particularly special to you? Every painting has a piece of me, a part of my soul, whether it has a sweet thought,

feeling or memory behind it. My all-time favourites are the polo paintings as I admire the sport and horses. As one of the only artists in the UAE to have specialised in painting oryx and gazelles, those paintings are quite important to me as well.

ARTS INTERVIEW

I particularly cherish every painting I have worked on with the public as part of the art initiative, Be an Artist for a Minute, which I started in 2014.

“The best thing about being an artist is how I get to make a difference in people’s lives. I’ve helped people bring a trail of optimism in the way they think. Influencing people in a positive way has to be my favourite part of being who I am.”

What’s the best and worst thing about being an artist? I think the best and worst are the same in my case. As an established artist in the region, people always want to talk to me about my works, which takes up a lot of time. The best thing about being an artist is how I get to make a difference in people’s lives. I’ve helped people bring a trail of optimism in the way they think. Influencing people in a positive way has to be my favourite part of being who I am. What’s your advice for young budding artists? Practice, practice, practice! Get out of your comfort zones and trust your intuition. Take every opportunity that comes your way; make the best out of it. Your hard work will pay off, even if it may be after several years. Don’t be shy to ask questions. To develop your skill and to grow as an artist, you need to explore, experiment and experience. ✤ fact magazine

Big Screen

The Revenant What’s it about: We’re in the 1820s when frontiersman Hugh Glass faces the almost unimaginable ordeal of being mauled by a bear and left for dead by his men in the frozen American wilderness. Glass survives the attack and is out to seek revenge against those who left him to die.

Director: Alejandro González Iñárritu cast: Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hardy, Will Poulter Why it’s worth watching? Inspired by true events and Michael Punke’s novel of the same name, The Revenant is Oscar winner Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s follow-up to Birdman, and chronicles a revenge saga starring Leonardo DiCaprio as the real-life 19th century fur trapper Hugh Glass. Audiences are taken on a long, gripping journey through an arduous and unforgiving landscape, as this story of brutal survival is brought to the big screen. It’s Glass’ gruff character and his vengeance-filled mission to kick some serious butt, as well as the incredible cinematography, which won’t require you to put on 3D glasses, that will drop film fans into the cold and bloody thick of the action. There will be moments that will leave you clenched into a whimpering ball, and THAT is the effect of the brilliant moviemaking of Alejandro G. Iñárritu. Considering that the plotline is one of power, fear, rage and human duplicity, the film itself is a beautiful western thriller with extraordinary scenes and, in case you hadn’t noticed, a MEGA cast!

Highlights “There will be moments that will leave you clenched into a whimpering ball, and THAT is the effect of the brilliant moviemaking of Alejandro G. Iñárritu.”

13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi What’s it about: An attack on American diplomats, soldiers, and citizens, at a U.S. compound in Libya, kills the American Ambassador, and as the security team struggles to make sense of the chaos, six men had the courage to do what’s right.

Email answers to editorial@factlive.com

Director: Michael Bay cast: John Krasinski, Max Martini Why it’s worth watching? The marketing around this film has been, somewhat, underwhelming, and though it might not be the biggest blockbuster of the year, it’s sure going to be one of the most controversial. Unlike the popcorn movies of his past (Transformers, Bad Boys etc) Michael Bay tackles a more serious theme; the 2012 attack on two U.S. compounds in Benghazi that led to the deaths of four Americans, including Ambassador Christopher Stevens. Critics are divided – either you’ll come out the cinema thinking this was a neat and emotionally-satisfying narrative, or you’ll actually see beyond the narrative to recognise the painful events of this historical day.

Victoria: A Life By A.N. Wilson

ALT-POP/ROCK R&B/Hip-Hop

The Buffet By R. Kelly

He recently declared to Rolling Stone magazine: “I’m not in no lane. I’m music and I just want people to know me as music. Not some R&B guy.” Well, we’ve got news for you Kells, that just isn’t true. Everyone who was into R&B in the singer’s 90s heyday has a story about an R.Kelly song *cough Bump’n’Grind cough* - so, why would he want to stray from that? The Buffet, apart from being one of the laughably worst titles ever (much like 2013’s Black Panties) is R.Kelly’s 14th studio album, for which he penned 462 songs, and spent over two years recording in Chicago. Kells’ new musical offering is simply an 18-track record with plenty of R&B-esque themes and sensual food-based metaphors. In The Poem, the singer promises to “toast” lady listeners “juices all night” and indulge his “bad eating habits” before making a five-second long slurping noise – classy. Then there’s the slinky slow jams and acrobatic vocals of Marching Band; and the emotional apex of the album, Be There, a duet with his once-estranged teenage daughter, who goes by Arriraye. If Kells is looking to step away from his reign as the king of R&B, The Buffet doesn’t really help. Sometimes, it’s just better for everyone if you do stay in your lane.

This is Acting By SIA

She’s undoubtedly one of the best musical

If you’re one of those people who has been ever-curious and intrigued by the lavish life of the British Royal Family – this is the book for you. When Queen Victoria died in 1901, she had ruled for nearly 64 years. She was the mother of nine and grandmother of 42, not to mention the matriarch of royal Europe through her children’s marriages. To many, Queen Victoria is a ruler shrouded in myth and mystique, an aging, stiff widow paraded as the figurehead to an all-male imperial enterprise. But in truth, one of Britain’s longest-reigning monarchs was one of the most passionate, expressive, humorous, and unconventional women who ever lived, and this is the shimmering and wonderful story of her life.

minds of our time and although she’s been in high-demand as a guest vocalist and for her quirky songwriting abilities, we’re over the moon that SIA has been writing for herself AND singing her own songs. This is Acting reminds us of the vulnerability in her songwriting, as some of the songs featured on this 12-track record were written for, and rejected by, big-name artists like Adele, Katy Perry and Rihanna - a decision that has now worked in SIA’s favour. The first track off the album Alive is an empowering song that recaptures the big chorus of Chandelier, with a great chord progression. Bird Set Free is an intimate

FICTION

Ten Thousand Skies Above You

anthem, of which SIA is a master, giving

By Claudia Gray

strength to listeners. This is Acting shows that,

This is the second book in the popular Firebird trilogy, and one that will grip you from the get-go. Ever since she used the Firebird, her parents’ invention, to cross into alternate dimensions, Marguerite has caught the attention of enemies who will do anything to force her into helping them dominate the multiverse - even hurting the people she loves. She resists until her boyfriend, Paul, is attacked and his consciousness scattered across multiple dimensions. With each trial in her hunt for Paul’s soul, she begins to question the destiny she thought they shared. This one’s filled with lush, romantic language and smart, exciting action!

for SIA, it IS possible to create a “commercial” pop record yet still retain some of the indie charm that made her music so appealing.

“This is Acting reminds us of the vulnerability in her songwriting...”

Journey to Jordan Panoramic views, pretty streets and plenty of mansaf, these are just some of the great things you’ll find in Amman. Beirut, Dubai, Damascus, Jeddah, - for one reason or another, I’ve heard (and even visited some) of these vibrant Middle East cities, but when it comes to Amman, not so much. Jordan’s capital city is not one that has really ever been on the radar, and certainly wasn’t even in the top 10 on my travel bucket list. However, when soaring above the beautiful desert and mountainous landscape, scattered with greenery, into Queen Alia International Airport, I quickly learned that this was going to be an interesting introduction to Jordan. In all my time spent in the Middle East, I have never quite seen a city that looks like this. Aptly called The White City, Amman is dotted with mostly whitewashed buildings, interspersed with a few brown ones here and there. The skyline is, very obviously, missing the modern skyscrapers that you might be used to seeing elsewhere in the region – this is a refreshing and welcomed scene. “This is because you were not allowed to build more than seven floors high until recently,” explains Mohammed, our local taxi driver. There’s something beautiful about the uniformity in such skylines, and with Amman being a city with many steep streets and twisting walkways, not to mention that it has 56 mountains, you’re always guaranteed a spectacular view. When in Amman, get stuck in! Start at the citadel, the site of the ancient RabbathAmmon, home to striking historical structures like the Roman Temple of Hercules and the Ummayad Palace. The citadel sits on Jebel al-Qala’a, the highest hill in Amman, so expect some pretty magnificent views. Head to the lively downtown for an experience of chaos and culture; there’s a shop for everything. Fresh fruit and veg markets, souvenir stores, traditional Jordanian dress boutiques, thrift shops with vintage trinkets, weird and wacky accessories, furniture, and, literally, everything in between. Most Jordanian women in downtown Amman are wearing 56

the hijab, and though Western women are not expected to cover up at the same level, there will be a few stares if you’re in a dress, but no more than what you’d expect in, say, Manama Souq. It’s the most traditional part of the city, and the most overwhelming. But, locals are incredibly friendly, you can pick up a bargain, and the street food and juice stalls are some of the best I’ve encountered. THIS is the Middle East – and I love it! Jordan’s location is an interesting one. To the north is the strife torn Syria as well as Lebanon. To the west is Egypt and Israel, whilst Saudi Arabia lies south and to the east is Iraq. Jordanians are very much aware of what’s happening in their neighboring nations, unafraid to talk about and acknowledge the different situations. However, one thing that was surprising and heart-warming is just how friendly and peaceful the Jordanian people and their country is. Five days travelling there, meeting the locals and experiencing true Arabian hospitality with real traditions, I can confidently say that I felt completely safe during this magical journey in Jordan. ✤

Where to eat Travel Tips FLIGHT OPTIONS

Gulf Air operates direct daily flights from Bahrain to Amman. For the best fare, try and book in as much advance as possible. Visit www.gulfair.com for more info.

GETTING AROUND

Amman isn’t difficult to navigate as it’s set around eight roundabouts, called ‘circles’, which act as the spine of the city. For example, most hotels are located centrally next to 4th and 5th circle, and downtown is near 8th circle.

TAXIS & ON FOOT

Taxis are relatively inexpensive, but make sure you ask the driver to turn on the metre or agree on a fare before you get in. We’d recommend exploring areas like Downtown on foot in order to get a true cultural experience.

SUFRA RESTAURANT Located on Amman’s busy and happening Rainbow Street, Sufra is a beautiful white stone building decorated it colourful flowers and plants. For a taste of real Jordanian cuisine, this is the place to eat. All dishes are inspired by the Bedouin kitchen, and you’ve got the choice of indoor and alfresco dining with spectacular views from the rooftop. A must-try is the mezze menu with silky smooth hummus, fresh fatoush, mutabbal, falafel and more. This is the ideal place to try a traditional favourite – mansaf (a rice dish served with Jameed sauce and lamb chunks) – delicious!

FOOD TRUCKS A pleasant surprise was that Amman is home to a number of great food trucks which offer amazing food at super affordable prices. Try Mr. Koshary on Wasfi Al Tal Street, serving up yummy kushari – an Egyptian dish made of rice, macaroni and lentils mixed together. If you’ve got midnight munchies, head to 2nd Circle for shawarma at Reem. More of a food stall, people from all over Amman come here for the most mouthwatering meat! fact magazine

“...the sensation is that of something so different that you’ll feel like you’ve wandered into another world.”

My first real insight into Petra was the British television programme An Idiot Abroad. Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant decided to send their good friend - and typical “little Englander” - Karl Pilkington to visit the Seven Wonders of the World, albeit with a few surprises of local culture thrown in. The episode in Jordan was the first time I saw more of Petra, more than it being just a location used for films like Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade, The Mummy Returns, and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, to name but a few. Karl spent the night in a cave, under the stars, and, surprisingly, enjoyed it! No matter how many times I’d watched this episode, or Google searched Petra before our weekend trip to Jordan, nothing really prepares you for this monumental place. The second you enter the site and 58

fact magazine

stroll down the winding walkways, cloaked by huge wild rocks, and when you first lay eyes on the Treasury through the Siq, there really are no words to describe what’s in front of you. I remember trying to think of as many hashtags as possible for a photo of our day trip – #beautiful #amazing #stunning #magical – there was just no word strong enough to do justice to the beauty of this site. Petra is rich in history and tradition. From its archaeological importance as the capital city of the Nabataeans, to its biblical significance that dates back to 7000BC, you can learn all about its intriguing past at the brand new renovated museum located at the site’s entrance. The track into Petra sprawls downhill from the little village of Wadi Musa. First impressions are strange yet spectacular. Weathered rocks, in deep reds and browns tower above you like domes; occasionally you’ll pass the façade of an old tomb in a side valley or come across caves built into the rocks – the sensation is that of something so different that you’ll feel like you’ve wandered into another world. You absolutely need one whole day to take in every corner of Petra. Hike up the cliff to the monastery; stop by a Bedouin

camp for bread and tea; ask a local Bedouin to show you the springs and river, along which they have little vegetable gardens, or get them to put some traditional eyeliner on you – made by collecting the ashes of a burnt tree and mixing these with olive oil this eyeliner humidifies your eyes and has a soothing effect, allowing Bedouins to protect their eyes from the sun without the need for sunglasses (the makeup industry really should catch onto that one!). Like most tourist destinations, be prepared for a little bit of heckling from young children selling postcards and trinkets, as well as people trying to give you the “best price” for a horse, camel or donkey ride. A polite “no thank you” will suffice and you’ll be left alone. The best way to explore Petra is on foot, so make sure you’re dressed appropriately – fitness wear or loose-fitted trousers and a shirt, with walking boots or sturdy trainers will do the trick. Keep a bottle of water at hand too (there are plenty of little shops and Bedouin-style cafes inside Petra that sell hot and cold refreshments). If you’re going in the warmer months, take sunscreen and a hat to protect your face, and, of course, don’t forget your camera! I’d recommend doing plenty of research on Petra before you arrive - it’s an enormous place with plenty to see and do, and you’ll definitely want to make the most of stepping back in time, if only for one day. ✤ GO: Petra is a 3.5 hour drive from Amman. Entrance fee into Petra is JD50. Creative Tours provides return transfers from your hotel in Amman, with professional and qualified drivers. Visit www.creative-tour.com for more information.

CITY LUXURY: four seasons hotel amman

HOTEL HOTSPOT

SUITE LIVING

The five-star Four Seasons Hotel Amman takes prime position between the prestigious Al Sweifiyah residential area and the Shmeisani financial district, in the heart of Jordan’s vibrant capital. It’s a stunning property that offers all the comforts of a homeaway-from-home but with so many welcomed added touches. We tell you why it’s the perfect accommodation choice when visiting Amman… 62

fact magazine

Expect nothing short of a royal treatment at the Four Seasons Hotel Amman. Check-in is as smooth a process as can be and first impressions of the staff show how incredibly friendly and welcoming they all are – we feel at home! The hotel itself is stunning – with a lobby that boasts a grand staircase, a beautiful chandelier and marble finishings. THIS, is what true Arabian hospitality is about! Our accommodation for the next four nights was going to be an Executive King Suite – a lavish room located on the 5th to 14th floors (we were on 11!) with a huge and comfortable king bed, a separate living area with plush sofas, a walk-in closet, and a massive bathroom with a heavenly tub and shower. The city views from the suite were spectacular, plus we were blown away by just how spacious these living quarters were. From the soft bedding, to the luxury amenities and the different areas of the suite, everything was perfect, but, for us, it was the added touches that made the stay all that more special. Every day, there were foodie treats waiting in the living room – from dry fruits to delicious cold mezze, an array of drinks, and the tastiest chocolate truffles we’ve ever tried. Add to this the nespresso machine and generously stocked mini bar, and you’ve got little extras that add to the high level of comfort and service that we experienced. Our most favourite thing was the innovative lighting in the room – especially the bedside lamps which had a multitude of dim to bright light options – and when you’re in Amman for work or leisure, it’s important to get a good night’s sleep – with these fixtures plus the amazing beds, we had the best night’s sleep!

DIVINE DINING Let us start with one of our favourite parts of the stay – breakfast at Olea restaurant. Number one – we love that breaky is served until 11am, number two – the hot and cold offerings are delicious, especially the fresh fruit and the yummy pastries, and number three – the staff provide the most efficient service which will have you start your day on a positive note. If you’re staying over the weekend, the

Friday Brunch in Olea is a massive must. The array of food and drinks in exquisite; meat-eaters will love the juicy bbqstyle steaks and chicken and lamb on skewers; whilst starters provide refreshing salads and a mix of mouthwatering mezze; and desserts are a whole other delight – we recommend the chocolate lava cake! Every week, the brunch adopts a new theme and the food and drinks are designed to reflect this. Olea also has an outdoor terrace where guests can dine, enjoy their choice of shisha, and admire the herb garden. If you really want to feel the real hustle and bustle of an evening in Amman, head to Five Grill & Lounge – a brand new terrace that is frequented by the city’s cool crowd and those who want a relaxed evening with friends, in a stylish and modern atmosphere. This lovely venue had the most incredible beet salad that we’ve ever tasted. Plus drinks are delicious, service is fast and you can enjoy an aromatic shisha as well as Amman’s gorgeous weather too.

Spa secrets There’s your regular luxury spa, then there’s the breathtaking spa at the Four Seasons Hotel Amman. Inspired by the restorative and relaxing benefits of the Dead Sea, this spa boasts a huge indoor pool, a sprawling changing area (men and women separate), great treatment rooms with ➻ fact magazine

mood lighting and music, and a nice relaxation area for aftertreatment. We’d highly recommend either the Spa Signature treatment which starts with the delicate removal of dead skin cells followed by a warm Dead Sea mud wrap to help cleanse and detoxify the skin, finishing with the Oriental relaxing massage; or the Nabatean treatment – a luxurious local treatment which starts with a full body scrub using a unique mixture of olive seeds and Dead Sea salt crystals, followed by a full body olive oil massage. The treatment continues with a scalp massage using special Argan oil. The first of the two is great for clearing toxins, and relaxing the body, whilst the latter gives you glowing skin and eases muscle tension. With both treatments, the therapists were extremely knowledgeable and professional. We recommend that you arrive 30 minutes prior to your treatment and make use of the spa facilities, such as the sauna and steam room. You’ll feel transported to a whole different world at this spa – and, like us, you won’t want to leave. Four Seasons Hotel Amman is truly a special place. The décor, the design, the amenities and facilities, every single guest comfort has been carefully thought about and created. What we loved most, however, was the warm nature of the staff, for whom nothing was too much of an ask. If you’re planning a trip to other Jordania sites like the Citadel, the dead sea or even Petra, the lovely people at the concierge desk will be happy to help. We’ll be returning to Amman soon, and the Four Seasons will definitely be the place to stay! ✤

2016 Nissan Maxima CITY RIDES - S3

fact magazine

73

ISLAND RIDES

With the new Maxima, Nissan builds on an already excellent model with even higher levels of luxury, features and performance. When the previous generation Maxima, the seventh overall, was unveiled back in 2008, it blew everyone away with its style, performance, luxury and sheer presence. The Gulf hadn’t seen a new Maxima in around a decade, as the sixth generation Maxima was simply an Altima rebadged as a Maxima for the US markets. 74

fact magazine

The seventh gen Maxima was such a leap forward for the brand’s flagship sedan that it was going to take some beating. However, for the 2016, eighth generation Maxima, Nissan have pulled out all the stops and come up with the goods. Externally, the design of the Maxima has undergone a significant overhaul, making it look more futuristic and bold than its predecessor. However, the biggest change has come from within. The model we drove was the Maxima SR, one step below the top end Platinum spec, and yet still absolutely packed with options. For example, you have keyless entry and start, heated AND air-conditioned seats, a big touchscreen that can be controlled either by touch or by the rotating dial on the centre console, adaptive cruise control, advance collision warning, flappy paddle gear shifters, to name but a few. Little touches, like the seats moving back when you turn the car off to make

getting out easier, are what make the Maxima punch above its weight in the segment. It’s the design, though, that really stands out with the interior. It’s stylish and modern, with a distinctly premium feel to everything thanks to lots of padded black leather surfaces with white stitching, and white leather seats with quilted stitching on the seat backs really adding a classy touch. The centre console, which is angled slightly towards the driver for that nice cockpit feel, is well laid out and looks great. The interface on the touchscreen, while not the most eye catching we’ve seen, is intuitive and easy to use. The highly competent adaptive cruise control works extremely well, with smooth braking when approaching a car ahead, and it’s much less ham fisted with the braking as versions of the technology we’ve seen in other brands. Nissan’s tried and tested powertrain,

ISLAND RIDES

the muscular 3.5l V6 with CVT, returns in the 2016 model, only this time it has been beefed up to produce 300hp and 354Nm of torque. We love the fact that, while everyone else seems to be switching to smaller, turbo-charged four-pot engines, Nissan is sticking to its guns with its beefy V6. The CVT transmission is excellent too, with smooth and rapid shifts, and a constant and impressive power delivery right the way through the ratios. It avoids that awful drone that other CVTs can be prone to, as the acceleration struggles to keep up with the engine speed. In addition, the chassis is almost 40kg lighter, and 25% stiffer, thanks to tougher lightweight materials. All of this amounts to a car that is fast, agile and engaging to drive. Following on from the previous generation, there were big expectations with the new 2016 Maxima, but Nissan have not disappointed. It’s a superb flagship for the brand. ✤ fact magazine

When it comes to clean eating, Mediterranean cuisine is your failsafe, first-thing-that-comes-to-mind option. Being January, and generally a month where we’re feeling a little sorry for ourselves/beating ourselves up for being too indulgent, healthy food is the onwards and upwards right now. And as far as authenticity is concerned, Nicole’s “have started going straight to the source,” according to Chef Christopher. “If I go meet the farmers and fisherman then I know that I will get the fresh product,” he adds. Having trained at the Cambridge School of Culinary Arts in Boston, Chef Christopher has amounted a vast

repertoire of experience, including working under CMC Joseph Leonardi “to really hone my skills”. This multicultural background in his culinary career stems from his American-Lebanese heritage: “I was brought up in the US, but with Lebanese food and tradition also being a major part of my upbringing. At eight years-old I started to make little things like spaghetti and French toast, hoping to wow everyone with my selfimposed creative genius. And then as I got older I started to take over all of the household cooking, whenever I had the time. I was later trained in formalised French cuisine and then took courses in Italian cuisine. I love all of it. If I had to

CHEF’S TABLE pick something it wouldn’t be a cuisine but more a style of cooking. I really enjoy taking a gastronomical approach to Mediterranean cuisine.” From appetisers to desserts, the emphasis on clean, minimal and artful presentation is akin to Chef Christopher’s philosophy that “taste is first and foremost the most important, but it starts with presentation. People eat with all of their senses. If something looks and smells beautiful you are already half way there. It has to be a blend of both. If a plate looks terrible and tastes great or looks amazing and tastes bad then you are not doing your job.” His delicate hand at composing a plate takes some serious skill – especially where fragile food is concerned. The Almond-Citrus Crusted Sea Scallops were particularly engaging on the plate and were remarkably soft to chew. The menu itself has had somewhat of a change, an upgrade. Having sampled the menu before and after Chef Christopher’s arrival, we can definitely say the offerings have stepped up on the quality ladder. The small plate/tapas of Gambas al Ajillo, which sees a tasty marriage of sautéed shrimp with spicy garlic tomato sauce and coriander pesto, is the perfect bite size entry into a cuisine so beautifully complex of flavour. The sauce had a richness to it in a way that didn’t killed off our taste buds, but energised them further. Citrus is a key ingredient that binds most of Chef Christopher’s dishes together. “I am rather fond of the Variation of Cucumber and Crab Salad. To me this dish screams freshness. Citrus notes bounce around your palate, it is so refreshing,” explains the Chef. The aforementioned Cucumber and Crab Salad is a duo of cucumber, crispy crab cake, citrus crab salad, red pepper mousse, petite greens and citrus vinaigrette – it’s tart and crisp in all the right places. Another feat of presentation was the Deconstructed Tiramisu – all elements of the much-loved dessert were separated on the plate, in their own light if you will – very gourmet, and a great opportunity for Tiramisu enthusiasts to mix and match the ingredients differently. ➻ fact magazine

Authentic Italian Simplicity OLIVETO BAHRAIN HAS BECOME POPULAR fOR ITS DELECTABLE DINING OPTIONS AND ITS STUNNING VENUE. FOR THOSE Of YOU WHO LOVE ITALIAN CUISINE AT ITS BEST, YOU’LL BE PLEASED TO KNOW THAT OLIVETO HAS TWO AMAZING fOODIE HAPPENINGS TO LOOK fORWARD TO THIS MONTH; A BRAND NEW MENU AND A TUSCANY PROMOTION. WE LEARN MORE ABOUT BOTH…

New Menu Both Executive Chef Giuseppe Zanotti and Chef de Cuisine Gianmaria Le Mura, worked over a period of three months to perfect the brand new dishes on the Oliveto menu, available to diners from January. Taking classic Italian recipes, the new dishes attain a delicious simplicity, yet with a modern twist. Take one of the new appetisers - Vitello tonnato, capperi croccanti, salsa tonnata scomposta cristalli di basilica – or to simply put it – Poached Veal, Tuna Caper Sauce. Usually, this dish consists of sliced meat with the sauce poured over it. But, at Oliveto, it’s been given a new lease of life. Chef Gianmaria tells us: “This is a 100 fact magazine

very traditional appetiser in Italy which is normally served cold in the summer time. Ours is different. Now we are in the winter so we will be serving it warmer, not hot, just warm, and instead of pouring the sauce over the top, we put it on the bottom of the plate.” The chef duo is definitely bringing their own contemporary spin to traditional Italian dishes. “Stick to the traditions, stick to the basics, stick to the taste, but give it a modern twist,” says Chef Giuseppe. Another dish that guests should try off the new menu, especially if you love seafood, is Gnocchi ai frutti di mare, zafferano, zest di limone, pomodorini Homemade Gnocchi, Saffron, Seafood. Interestingly, the use of Saffron here is

DINING

not only to give locals a taste that they love, but, as Chef Gianmaria explains, it’s about the essence of the ingredient. “Saffron is great for its colour, for its flavour, especially with seafood, and for the presentation,” he says. For the chefs, the strongest component of the new menu is the flavour and taste of every dish, some of which are a result of great feedback from customers who enjoyed the dishes during special dining promotions at Oliveto. And that’s what the restaurant and its new menu is all about – putting an innovative touch on real Italian cuisine – to give diners a homely food experience that Italy is so famous for, as well as catering to the diverse palates of Bahrain’s foodie community.

Tuscany Promotion From January 15 to 24, Oliveto will be running a fantastic dining promotion that promises to take diners to the beautiful landscapes of Tuscany. Dishes will be incredibly authentic, showcasing the best ingredients from the Tuscany region. “The purpose of any dining promotion is to create an atmosphere and an experience in this part of the world,” says Chef Giuseppe. “So for this promotion we could have music from Tuscany, maybe the waiters will be dressed in traditional Tuscan wear, we want the guest to feel like they are in Tuscany just for that little while.” Not only is Tuscany famous for its artistic treasures like Leonardo Da Vinci and

Michelangelo, it’s also renowned for a multitude of ingredients like virgin olive oil, the fiorentina meat and, for Chef Gianmaria, the beautiful bread. “Tuscan cooking is very traditional with many old recipes,” says Chef Gianmaria. “We repurpose these for contemporary life. One famous ingredient is the flour for the bread. Tuscan food, for me, is the most important food in the whole of Italy.” The Tuscany promotion will have a few appetisers, mains and desserts for guests to choose from, so if you fancy an excellent dining experience without travelling too far, check out this great celebration of Italian food at Oliveto Bahrain. ✤ GO: Visit www.oliveto.net for more information. fact magazine

hat comes to mind when you think of Americanstyle food? Burgers? Super melted cheese? Slatherings of sauce? Crunchy fries? Reliably stodgy and feelgood, Bennigan’s makes up the dream scenario of not only American cuisine, but a fusion of Irish too. Bennigan’s has held a pub fare identity of historic proportions on the island for over a decade. Since it opened in Bahrain in 2001, Bennigan’s has always been the place where people have gone to enjoy great meatcentric American cuisine with a special brand of Irish hospitality. The vibe can be described as downtown casual, relaxed and inviting – very much your hang out environment on a Friday night. As soon as you enter the restaurant 104 fact magazine

you’ve got a wall of pinned photos showing 1kg steak-eating successes – there and then you know this is the real deal – with perhaps a feeling of slight queasiness at the thought of attempting the same challenge! The wood based décor gives an air of Wild West as well as homely familiarity. The booths are reminiscent of old school American diners with extra padded seats, flanked by framed memorabilia from yesteryear and the music played is a mix of now and then. In all, there’s rustic appeal. Now, time to get down and greasy. We start off with a Country Clare Sampler Platter, perfectly filled with nachos, Hogan’s egg rolls and Dubliner quesadillas – with a heart-warming dressing of thick sour cream and guacamole. It’s so easy to dive into the goods and not pace. But a word of warning: s-l-o-w-l-y. The rest is too good to miss!

And for all you buffalo chicken enthusiasts, there’s the biggest salad you’ve ever seen coming your way. The Ultimate Buffalo Chicken Salad (new on the menu) is a choice meal – but in true ‘eat heavy’ style, it’s merely a starter! Its rainbow composition of tender greens, carrots, celery, blue cheese pico de gallon and seasoned chicken breast on a huge crispy tortilla bowl is a real performance. It is simply spectacular to look at and even better to (literally) dig in to. Onto the legendary favourites. The Stacked Chicken & Shrimp is a more modest offering, this dish is definitely the lightest of them all. The Cajun grilled chicken and shrimp bedded on a rice pilaf with a side of extremely juicy broccoli, is Grandma’s recipe delicious. But nothing can quite prepare you for the World Famous Monte Cristo. Words fail us. So here goes: it’s honey wheat bread layered with tender turkey ham, roasted turkey, Swiss and American cheeses – batter dipped, gently fried and coated with powdered sugar. It’s served with red raspberry preserve for dipping as well as fries. Filling doesn’t even cover the feels on this one! Every bite is so dense with flavour – especially when you add jam into

the mix. It’s gooey, crispy and takes you to a happy place. Winner. And if you’ve got space (there were four of us sharing these dishes so there was some leeway) try their desserts: House Made Bread Pudding With Praline Sauce or the Brownie Bottom Pie. The former is a melting marvel and the latter a chocolate sensation. Enjoy it to the max, because we certainly did! ✤

f there’s one thing there’s plenty of in Bahrain, it’s Italian restaurants. The cuisine is one of the most popular in the country with everything from pizza, pasta, risotto, tiramisu and so much more being consumed with gusto. But, far from the fast-food offerings, there are only a handful of excellent fine dining restaurants that serve up hearty food from different regions of Italy. Medzo, at the InterContinental Regency Bahrain, just happens to be one of those. Located on the mezzanine floor of the five-star hotel, Medzo draws guests from the more discerning side of the dining demographic. The venue boasts contemporary décor with the perfect lighting for an intimate setting. The open-kitchen style set up adds a touch of showmanship and authenticity to the dining experience – we like it! At Medzo, it’s flavour that counts above all the rest. The chef and his team strive to deliver real Italian cuisine with their own modern twist. We’re intrigued, and can’t wait to tuck in! To begin with, we go for two antipasti options; the Parmigiana made up of grilled eggplant with tomato sauce and mixed cheese; and the Crostone al pomodoro, toasted bread topped with fresh tomatoes, garlic, black olives and buffalo mozzarella. We LOVE the big white plates that the food is served on. The presentation is clean, simple and very appealing. The parmigiana is as tasty as you’d expect, with just the right amount of sauce and cheese – delicious. The latter appetiser has everyone saying ‘mmmh’ – it’s fresh, light and all the components of the dish together, make for an exquisite bite! We also shared the Caciucco from the Zuppe 108 fact magazine

section. This traditional Italian mixed seafood soup is the perfect winter warmer dish on a chilly day (we’ve had a few of those recently). The main courses triggered just as much praise and surprise! The Caserecce allo scoglio – casarecce pasta with mixed fresh seafood sauce – was simply the epitome of Italian cuisine on a plate. Though it’s a little heavy, which we didn’t mind at all, the portion is generously packed with a variety of seafood including our favourites, shrimp and clams. We devoured it in minutes! Next up were two meaty mains; the Lasagna aperta and the Scottadito in crosta di mandorle, which is almond crusted lamb chop served with mash potato,

Foodie corner

spinach and cherry tomato. Both were equally impressive in presentation and taste. The first was, hands down, one of the best lasagnas we’ve tasted in Bahrain, and the second was spectacularly rich and juicy, though needed a little sprinkle of salt and pepper to taste. When it came to dessert, and as many at the table have a real sweet tooth, we were thrilled to try the Tiramisu del bosco and the Torta di nocciole. The first of the two wasn’t your usual tiramisu, and we were pleasantly surprised. Crispy wafer-like

pastry, cream and mixed berries made up this delightful dessert – it was SO good. The last one is definitely one for cake lovers – hazelnut in this case – served with cream and vanilla ice cream. A failsafe crowd pleaser! Yes, Bahrain has many Italian restaurants, and yes, many of them do good food. However, Medzo manages to combine the striking aromas and essence of Italian culture and heritage, with great service, a beautiful modern eatery and a five-star location. Now, when you’re looking for a fine-dining lunch or dinner that won’t disappoint, this place should definitely be at the top of your list! ✤ GO: Visit Medzo at InterContinental Regency Bahrain. New Year’s Resolutions

Keeping the Love

Yvonne Cole, Personal Trainer, believes that when you eat clean, train hard and trust the process, your consistency and patience pays off…

Christal Dennis, Personal Performance Coach and Hypnotherapist, is dedicated to helping people overcome life’s hurdles and tapping into their deepest potential...

The New Year parties are over and for those that made New Year’s resolutions it’s time to put those plans into action. Unfortunately, most people only last three months before they fall back into their same old ways and say to themselves “next year”. Everyone has different reasons for wanting to make a change in their life and taking that first step is the hardest but, once you do, the rewards will be worth it; think of it as a change of life, and with the rise of diabetes and obesity for some people it may even save their life. Health and fitness isn’t a one size fits all and will not be the same for everyone but it’s worth fighting for. Get yourself prepared, do research with regards to nutrition and plan your meals for the week. Schedule in your workouts, be it with a personal trainer, a friend or by yourself, and stick to them. Make sure you only have good food in your house, and start a food diary as once you start writing things down, they become real. Remember, fruit and vegetables are your friends, as is water. Move your body and get a sweat on! Get plenty of sleep, prepare your meals in advance, kill your workouts, stop making excuses, love life and, remember, small changes eventually add up to huge results. Have a Happy 2016! ✤

It’s a new year, bursting with possibilities. 2016 is just waiting for you to make of it what you want. I must admit that, for me, personally, when I have loved ones around everything seems so much brighter and it feels like I could scale mountains. So much is possible with love on your side. Now for many people in Bahrain, loved ones are not around. It could be that your spouse or loved ones are in another country. For some, this might not be a big deal but for others it could have an effect on different parts of their lives. You could find that missing loved ones affects your performance at work. When having loved ones close by is just simply not an option, it is important that you create an environment for yourself that can be nurturing and supportive. You can do several things to achieve this. The first most important thing is to have good friends. People who are in a similar situation as you, who have similar interests and values can become lifelong friends. You can create a relationship built up slowly over time that has the same love and trust that you have with your loved ones. Secondly, by joining communities like churches, mosques, or spiritual groups, you can meet new people and have sense of belonging to a community. Thirdly, creativity from a hobby or interest can help keep your energy high. For this 2016 remember the power of love and keep it with you! ✤

But in many ways, 2015 was better than most for me. I spent the most zen week ever, at a yoga retreat in Turkey. I bought a beautiful apartment in sunny Brisbane. And, the most life-changing of all, I added to my furry family with a precious shihtzu called April. So what’s in store for 2016? Well if it’s anything like the year that’s just gone, it’s going to be amazing. And here’s my resolution for 2016. Spend more time on the yoga mat, and enjoy as much time with my doggies as possible. Oh, and to remember my resolution. Happy New Year beautiful people! ✤ GO: Keep up with Georgina at www.blondeinbahrain.com and on instagram @blondeinbahrain.
