2.0.1.8 Let’s Talk Resolutions

Write it on your heart that every day is the best day in the year.” - Ralph Waldo Emerson

S

omething that you might not know about the magazine industry is that, in all its glamorous glory, it really never sleeps! Being in the media, especially in the Gulf, is somewhat of a 24/7 dedication – from research and writing to picture sourcing, interviewing and mingling at meetings and events – this is one challenging and super demanding sector. So, when the holiday season and the New Year come around, it’s an absolute heaven-send that after all the chaos comes the calm and some well-deserved time to relax (just a little though). I have to confess, until now I’ve never really made or written down New Year’s resolutions – ever. Of course, like many of you out there, I have goals and a hundred to-do lists, both in my head and written on odd scraps of paper, that I often refer to for a quick reminder or guidance. But, for 2018, I did something new – I wrote down some resolutions (mainly something about eat clean, train dirty, less tech, more travel) and I’m hoping that putting pen to paper means that I’ll be able to make them stick – a girl can dream. With that in mind, we came up with 8 Resolutions Worth Keeping for 2018 (p21) – some big, some small, others fun, and maybe even life-changing – all things that you can enjoy doing in Bahrain over the next 12 months. From picking up a new skill to saving money, there’s at least one thing that each of you can commit to doing for a better 2018! And if more travel is in fact on the agenda for you, what better way to begin the New Year than with plenty of inspo for your next trip? Regional escapes call out from the shores of The Chedi Muscat (p47), whilst more exciting, interesting and thrilling firsts are waiting to be discovered in Dubai (p35) – take your pick! The next few months are going to be busy in the FACT office as we plan our annual regional awards ceremonies, and keep our eyes and ears on the ground in Bahrain to bring you all the noteworthy events and activities to visit. I’m not sure how I’m going to survive an entire year without a new season of Game of Thrones, but it’s all the more reason for re-watch weekends and GoT gatherings – who’s in? In the meantime, I’ll just be over here on meme watch from the comfort of the couch. Happy New Year everyone.☺

This was a competition that focused on promoting excellence in coffee and the barista profession. Mr Abdulrahman Almoayed and Mr Ali Mudara flagged off the event at Seef Mall, encouraging entrants to bring their A-game to the table. Mr Abdulrahman Almaoyed, said: “We are very glad to see this amazing response in the very first season of the Bahrain Coffee Championship and hope this will improve every year.” Attracting the best talent from across the island, the event was professionally organised and executed. This was the right platform for all the baristas for whom coffee making is not merely a profession - it’s a passion. Mr Ali Mudara added: “The spirit and talent of participant baristas is truly remarkable. We are pleased to have the best baristas on the island on board the Bahrain Coffee Championship.” The competition uses the best coffee machines from Nuova Simonelli and beans from Illy. CULTURAL EVENTS: JANUARY Al Fann, Art from the Islamic Civilization from the al-Sabah Collection, Kuwait Date: JANUARY 18 – JUNE 30 Venue: BAHRAIN NATIONAL MUSEUM The exhibition introduces the public to the great and multifaceted nature of Islamic culture through the spectacular al-Sabah collection of Islamic Art. Broadly divided into two parts, the display illustrates a chronological progression broken into four stages (from the very beginnings of the Islamic period up to and including the three great empires of the sixteenth century) and tackles themes that run transversely through Islamic art; mainly, calligraphy, geometric decoration, arabesque and figurative art and Jewellery.

The Stamp Seal: Hallmark of Dilmun and its Hidden Art Date: ONGOING – SEPTEMBER 20 Time: 8AM – 8PM Venue: BAHRAIN NATIONAL MUSEUM Genre: EXHIBITION Seals were a main administrative tool used to regulate trade and organise society. Hardly bigger than few centimetres, they were used on official documents; tags attached to goods and on buildings gates to certify authenticity and ownership. In addition to their main administrative function, the seals might have had some metaphysical connotations. With a shape and iconography unusual to the Near East, the Dilmun seals illustrate more than any other category of artefacts, the most original material representation of the Dilmun culture and its only surviving art.

HOUE’ 2010 ‫وه‬ Date: Ongoing until February 28 Time: Opening 7pm; Daily 8am – 8pm Venue: Bahrain National Theatre Genre: Exhibition The Bahrain National Theatre is hosting the “HOUE” installation by French-Iraqi artist Mehdi Moutashar. The HOUE installation is exhibited at the Theatre’s foyer, allowing the visitors to directly interact with it. Houé’s calligraphic form, written from right to left using a qalam, a sharpened dried reed filled with ink, starts with a thick, intense, black line and narrows towards the end like a hair. 16

Food is Culture III JANUARY 22 TO 25 BAHRAIN NATIONAL MUSEUM Food is Culture is a creative experimental project that aims to bridge together the mediums of art and food. Running in parallel with the Bahrain Annual Fine Arts Exhibition, this experiment sheds light on creative processes that take place when two individuals (from different creative disciplines) collaborate. Every year five artists and five chefs get together and work to produce a creative product; be it a painting, installation, video, cake, drink, all or something completely different. The result of their two months’ work, which is documented in a short film and a publication, will be presented during the course of the week, where they share and display their collective creations. ✤

2 BREATHE LIGHTER This one goes out to all the smokers who really want to quit but find it difficult to do so! Frankly, it’s time to give up smoking. To be fair, this should be on the top of everyone’s list all year round, but New Year does make for a perfect excuse. We know it’s easier said than done, but once you make that decision, it is truly not as hard as you thought! The toughest bit is breaking the habit and so it is a good idea to change up your routine by, for example, sitting somewhere you don’t usually smoke or taking up a new hobby that will keep you busy in free hours. Whether it’s binge-watching a new series on Netflix or sweating it out on the treadmill, trying out your cooking skills or even meditating – finding what makes you stop thinking about the nicotine rush is what’s important here. If you’re not up for going ‘cold turkey’, as they say, there is aid at hand. You could invest in some patches or gum, or head over to IQS Bahrain - I Quit Smoking – at Dana Mall (www.iquitsmoking.bh) or any other dedicated tobacco cessation clinic including Bahrain Specialist Hospital Riffa (1338 1338) and Juffair (1781 2000) as well as selected health centres in Hidd and Hoora to name but a few.

3 DONATE YOUR TIME

What better way to feed the soul and develop your character than by giving unselfishly to others? There are good causes aplenty to get involved with in Bahrain. One that is always fresh in everyone’s mind after the festive period is Bahrain Red Crescent Society (www.rcsbahrain.org) which is a fantastic volunteer charity that supports a number of great humanitarian causes. There’s also The Palm Association which was created to help people with the most basic of needs. The cornerstone of the association is their Feed-a-Family Programme. Sponsorship of the Feed-a-Family programme permits them to provide and distribute approximately 155 food parcels to the value of BD20 every month to impoverished Bahraini families (www. thepalmassociation.com). And if animals are more your thing, then there are numerous other groups helping our domestic friends around the country, too. Some of the best include Tony The Dogfather's Animal Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre in Saar (www.tonythedogfather) and the Bahrain Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (BSPCA) which is a committed and passionate humane, non-profit organisation dedicated 24

fact magazine

to the welfare of animals (www.bspca.org). Other every day organisations to check out include Feed the Need (www. feedtheneedbahrain.com) an incredible initiative offering food to the local communities through fridges and shelves placed in different areas of the country; and A Box of Goodness (www. facebook.com/aboxofgoodness), encouraging children and adults to collect items in an empty box, adding one item a day for one month. At the end of the month, you have a box full of goodness to share with someone in need. Whether you want to look after children or would love to lend an ear to a cancer sufferer, there is a charity or group for everyone here. And if you can’t find what you’re looking for, why not start your own?

4 BUILD SOME MAD SKILLS

We mean expand your talent repertoire by learning something new! A language, perhaps? Arabic should be a priority for all expats, and for this you can head to the Lingoease Centre (www. facebook.com/BilingualBahrain). But, there are plenty of other tongues to be mastered so check out what classes are available at Berlitz (www.berlitz-bahrain.com) or the British Language Centre (www.britishlanguagecentre.co.uk) – to name a few. But maybe arts is more your thing. Check out Namaste Bahrain (www.namastebh.com) who offer everything from portrait to fine art, still life drawing and art therapy classes too. There are so many activities to choose from, such as learning an instrument, singing, amateur dramatics or film and photography. Or, if you head to one of the many art galleries around town, you’ll surely hear about workshops and classes being run by local and visiting artists for a minimal spend and in most cases, completely free! If you like to cook, on the other hand, amazing chefs around the country offer cooking classes and tasting sessions. One of the places where this often takes place is the 5-star Gulf Hotel Bahrain Convention & Spa (1771 3000) where chefs host group cooking classes with a sumptuous meal to follow. Of course, you could also take the outdoor-sy route and pick up diving, kitesurfing or even spear fishing. Go horse riding, play golf, learn to parasail or keep it simple and on dry land with outdoor yoga or even swimming. There is no end to the activities that are available to you in Bahrain, so what are you waiting for?

THE GULF HOTEL BAHRAIN CONVENTION & SPA THE ART OF COOKING: Designed for all the amateur cooks out there who love to be in the kitchen but find themselves too busy – THIS is just the treat and skill-refining activity you need. Perfect for home cooks and those with a passion for food who want to spend some time with the pros, every Saturday, The Gulf Hotel Bahrain Convention & Spa offers intimate hands-on demonstration classes, from the building blocks of cooking to delicious and exclusive mouthwatering menus, led by the team of amazing chefs. BD18 net with lunch – seats are limited. Clases take place on January 13 (Mexican); January 20 (Pastry); and January 26 (Japanese Sushi), from 10.30am to 12noon. GO: Call 1771 3000 for reservations and more information.

5 BANISH

THE BULGE

After (at least) one month of gorging, only the luckiest of souls will have little or no belly bulge. It’s inevitable, especially when you keep telling yourself ‘That’ll be my resolution!’ (every year). But it’s not a problem this time, as Bahrainhas plenty of options to get rid of that muffin top in no time. Firstly, you have to decide to adopt a new lifestyle, rather than going on a ‘diet’, which are always doomed to failure. Just a dash of healthy eating and a dollop of good exercise will do the trick, and you’ll be amazed at how easy (and addictive) it is! You could join a gym or get involved with a team sport or, simply go for (at least) a half hour walk every evening. Then, make sure the pantry is guilt-free. If you’re not confident to take the plunge yourself at first, there are some places and people to help! VLCC Wellness (www. vlccwellness.com/bahrain), for example, will assess your BMI (Body Mass Index) and then explore customised weight loss options with you. Or, Carlton Nutrition Centre (www.carlton-nutrition-center. com) where professional dietitians help you lose, gain, or maintain your weight and improve your athletic performance, and nutrition consultations that will deliver meals created just for you, straight to your door. So, go on then... no excuses!

6 TIGHTEN THE PURSE STRINGS Easier said than done in a place that’s becoming pricey, but we promise it is doable! First of all, instead of going out and schmoozing all the time, why not have more soirees at home? Get a BBQ roaring and some music blasting, and you have a good night on the cards that doesn’t need to cost a week’s wage! Of course, one way to save lots of pennies is to stop eating out at lunch. Make it the night before and pack it up for tomorrow’s al-desko session. But, don’t let it be the end of your social life! There are many reasonably priced restaurants and bars to visit. For a cheap and cheerful dinner one of our favourites is Foods at Home (1700 0888) with its cosy living room setting and delicious authentic fare. A whole meal for two here comes to around BD10-15 – that’s starters, mains and dessert. Another good eatery is Coco’s in Adliya where portions are big and prices are small – expect to get a hearty meal here for under BD5 per person! Our favourite spots for a reasonable evening or night out are Harvesters Pub & Terrace at Crowne Plaza Bahrain (1753 1122) and Downtown Bar at InterContinental Regency Bahrain (1722 7777). Don’t forget all the amazing Happy Hours at all the bars, lounges and even upscale venues in the country. 28

7 HEALING

FROM WITHIN

To those unfamiliar with Reiki,it is a practice, otherwise known as a healing art, that originatedin Japan developed by Dr Mikao Usui and works to promote self- healing on all levels – physical, psychological, emotional and spiritual. So what happens during a Reiki session? Well, every individual reacts differently to a treatment. It works by channeling energy to the body which enables it to eliminate toxins. Your Reiki master will places their hands onthe recipient’s body, and from the sensation they feel, they’re able to gauge the level of toxins within your body. Although some may argue the treatments make no personal difference, Reiki is not designed to give instant relief and over a course of treatments, significant changes can be seen inside and out. Reiki is a gentle healing therapy which compliments medical and other holistic therapies. Melanie Sarginson is one of the best Reiki teachers and practitioners in Bahrain who can perform the life-changing therapy on you or even offer coaching and counselling (www.reikibahrain. com) while Serenity Meditation, Yoga and Reiki Centre (www. serenity.bh) also offers healing classes and therapies.

8 INDULGE IN THE ORGANIC WORLD While many people are reluctant to change, perhaps it’s time to take a risk and try something new, so why not start with your food? Organic food and, more specifically, plant-based diets have become HUGE in the health world. Organic food is produced using methods that do not involve modern synthetic inputs such as synthetic pesticides and chemical fertilisers. Although the farming movement arose in the 1940s in response to the industrialisation of agriculture known as the Green Revolution, organic food production has recently reached a peak of popularity. On top of this, vegan lifestyles are being adopted more and more by people who come to realise that going green on their plates is ultimately great for their bodies. Luckily, many major supermarkets in Bahrain offer up good organic food sections – this includes Al Osra, Lulu Hypermarket, and even Carrefour. Those looking for something a little more traditional should check out Live Well, founded in 2003 as a way to encourage a healthy, organic lifestyle in Bahrain. There’s a shop in Zinj’s Al Jazira supermarket, and another in Bahrain Mall called Bio Natural Nutrition, and sells everything from quinoa flour to soy products and even organic body and hair care items. Of course, the annual Bahrain Farmers’ Market is a fabulous place to start with stocking up on farm-grown, fresh produce too. Going organic or simply cutting out meat for more vibrant fruit and veggies on your plate, has never been as easy as it is in 2018! ✤ 30

ON DEPARTURE: Spend less of your time at the airport – you’ll have priority services on the ground in both Bahrain and at Dubai International’s Terminal 2, providing a speedy path through check-in and security. Once through immigration, if there’s time to spare, flydubai Business Class passengers can enjoy complimentary refreshments at the airport lounges. And then when it’s time to board, you’ll enjoy priority boarding too.

TAKE A SEAT: The business class seats are exceptionally comfortable and spacious. With built-in lumbar support, generous recline and extendable legrests, they provide the perfect opportunity to relax. With a seat pitch of 42 inches, the 12 business class seats in the cabin provide the perfect environment to work, rest or catch an episode of your favourite TV show on the short flight over. Passengers can sit back and enjoy one of more than 200 movies on their personal 12.1-inch touchscreen TV or plug in a laptop to their seat’s individual power supply and get down to work.

A LIGHT BITE On shorter flights, lighter cold meals are served. There are also sweet and savoury snacks available on demand throughout the flight.

ON ARRIVAL: After a comfortable and relaxing flight, on arrival in Dubai, a dedicated shuttle bus takes our business class passengers straight from the aircraft to arrivals where they’ll be fast-tracked through immigration. You also get priority baggage collection which means that business class passengers are soon out of the airport and on their way.

SERVICE WITH A SMILE:

HOW TO GET THERE? One of the best and most value-for-money ways to get from Bahrain to Dubai is with flydubai. The low-cost carrier is one of the most reliable for departure times and service, and it often runs promotional deals where you can pay as little as BD60 return in economy with the full baggage allowance included – how GOOD is that? On our trip to Dubai, we experience the plane’s business class cabin, which may seem like an unnecessary luxury on a less than one-hour flight, but for those who want the ultimate comfort and convenience, it’s well worth the purchase. 36

Passengers in business enjoy a personal, professional and friendly service from a member of crew that’s dedicated to the business class cabin. La Mer Dubai You might have seen its uber trendy fairy lights or colourful beach huts all over instagram lately, and rightly so. La Mer Dubai is the city’s newest laidback and eclectic outdoor space that brings major chilled-out vibes to the shores of Jumeirah. If you want to caption your next social media post with “wind in my hair and sand between my toes” – La Mer Dubai can give you ALL that and then some! The alluring beachfront is located in the affluent Jumeira 1 district and is definitely, in our opinion, the coolest space to have opened up to the public in recent months. Developed by Meraas, the breathtaking destination is nothing short of an inspiring environment, with the most instagrammable street art, graffiti, mottos, and incredibly cool seating, dining, shopping and leisure offerings that you’ll find in the city. La Mer also integrates minimalist and contemporary design elements. The existing beaches have been redeveloped to include showers, toilets with baby changing and disabled access, free wifi, information hubs, mobile charging, prayer rooms, four children’s playground areas and over 1,000 parking spaces are among the other amenities. Surrounded by almost 2.5 kilometres of relaxing sandy beaches, phase one of La Mer opened to the public in October 2017. The first phase comprises La Mer North and La Mer South, which has over 130 shops, cafés, restaurants, and beach activities, that act as a meeting point for people to enjoy a great time, whether they’re visiting La Mer to eat, play or unwind. The second phase of La Mer, The Wharf, incorporates rusty steelworks and an industrial aesthetic, with a waterpark featuring a surf park that is a first-of-its kind in the region; a cinema, additional shops, cafés and restaurants. These additions, are scheduled to open at the start of 2018. At a later stage, there will also be a hotel and residential community located on two man-made peninsulas. Several food and beverage concepts will make their first appearance in the region, including a number of distinguished licensed restaurants. You’ll find a natural playground created for children to play safely next to the warm gentle waves. Day rooms and cabanas will allow residents and visitors to enjoy a carefree day by the sea from dawn until dusk, without straying too far from the convenience of the city. La Mer is also the perfect place for a walk along the beach or a swim in the sea. In a first outside of East Asia, La Mer will also be home to ‘Hawa Hawa’, a new air-filled trampoline concept that was first created and installed in public parks in Japan – YES!

• ARTS FOCUS

OPEN DOORS BY JAMES DOMINÉ GALLERY ONE CREATIVE DIRECTOR AND PHOTOGRAPHER, JAMES DOMINÉ, HAS RELEASED A NEW SERIES OF OPEN DOORS LIMITED EDITION ARTWORKS. A TRUE REFLECTION OF HIS GLOBAL TRAVELS, THE COLLECTION DRAWS PARTICULAR INSPIRATION FROM DOMINÉ’S OBSERVATIONS IN EUROPE AND THE FAR EAST. Dominé applied everyday urban scenes, as the photographic foundation for his Open Doors compositions, transforming the seemingly mundane sights surrounding us, into striking metaphorical reflections. He developed the artworks from multiple sources and juxtaposing images to create beautifully constructed montages. On a trip to Tunis, North Africa, Dominé explained that he became fascinated by the architecture within the historical Medina area, a world heritage site where generations of stories have unfolded down the narrow lanes and alleyways. “The ancient doors scattering the streets are vast and impressive and I became increasingly curious about what was behind these imposing structures,” he said. Today, Dominé photographs inspiringly unique doors throughout the Middle East and North Africa; including Tunisia, Turkey, Oman, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain. The composition often being led by each unique location explains Dominé. “In some towns, for example Sidi Bou Said in Tunisia, the vast majority of homes have blue doors, so it is often the location that dictates the colour choice of compositions,” he explained. “I am naturally curious, when I am immersed in a photo-shoot I find myself contemplating the lives and customs of the people that surround me. I imagine glancing through open doors into the homes of people to experience a part of their culture. In the MENA region I have learned that people are warm and inviting, hence there is always one open door in my artworks.” His artistic endeavors and graphic style combined with an innate understanding of how to use natural light to create exquisite results sees the fourth series of Open Doors sold in the eclectic retail spaces of Gallery One. ✤

Revival

By Eminem

Make way for the real Slim Shady as the most prolific rapper of ALL time has just dropped a fire new album! After months of teasing, we were finally able to get our hands on Eminem’s ninth studio album and it has more than met our expectations. Featuring big names including Ed Sheeran, Beyonce, Pink and Alicia Keys, Em’s star-studded new record has been hyped up for a long while now – no doubt due to his stealth marketing strategies. Opening to mixed reviews, Walk on Water, an emotional power ballad has Eminem fretting about his own obsolescence. Featuring Queen Bey herself, the track pairs a softly crooned hook with fuming, escalating verses, reminiscent of his Love the Way You Lie era. A far cry from his previous controversial content, Marshall Mathers seems to be exploring a newfound wisdom. That being said, Revival has a high bar to climb to compete with the Detroit rapper’s past chart successes. As for us, we’re definitely stanning for life!

No_One Ever Really Dies By N.E.R.D

If there’s anything better than Pharrel Williams solo, it is Pharrel Williams rocking it out with his mates as part of the hip hop collective, N.E.R.D. Luckily for us, the American funk rock band is back with another glorious record! Featuring an impressive roster of guest artists including Rihanna, Kendrick Lamar, Gucci Mane and Future, this is the trio’s first full-length album in seven years. Bidding adieu to the warm, live-instrument feel of its early work, N.E.R.D. is all set to dive into a much harsher digital realm. Lemon featuring Rihanna trades live instrumentation for a rock hard beat and drum machine kicks. Armed with RiRi’s usual swagger, the track is a surefire banger! 1000 featuring Future keeps with the signature N.E.R.D. production. After continuously transcending genres and bringing new sounds to hip hop, it seems the band can do no wrong.

If you thought healthy eating was flavourless and boring, Bobby Flay has some news for you! The chef shares his secret to eating right without compromising taste. Using an arsenal of low-calorie flavour bombs including rubs, relishes and marinades, Flay transforms lean proteins, whole grains and fresh produce into crave-worthy meals with 200+ recipes.

ould The Chedi be Muscat’s best-kept secret? An ultraexclusive hideaway targeting a clientele of worldwide jetsetters. It certainly appears to be the case when team FACT visited for a recent weekend stay. Unrestrained grandeur and high levels of service begin from the moment we touch down in Oman, as we’re transported via private limousine into the very heart of luxury. We didn’t expect The Chedi to be situated in such close proximity to the city centre but upon passing through the white-washed perimeter walls, it feels as though we’re miles from civilisation. The hotel lobby greets us with Omani charm as the scent of oud drifts out into the starscattered sky, while a collection of rainbowcoloured glass lanterns are suspended overhead painting a picture straight out of the stories of 1001 Arabian Nights. The Chedi’s architecture is Moorish in style emanating a sense of zen-like serenity and it’s this hybrid of Arabian and Asian that provides much of the property’s appeal. We’re gifted a handy map to help us navigate the expansive grounds and as our hands brush against door handles inlaid with mother of pearl, we know we’re in for a real treat...

(replenished daily) complete with glass decanters of liquor for an additional touch of class. Each Club Suite sports a small outside terrace with reclining sun-loungers from which you can glimpse the sea through natural sand dunes and meadows of pampas grass. Booking the Club Suite also provides access to the Chedi Club where afternoon tea and pre-dinner cocktails and canapés are provided.

RELAXATION GOALS

SUITE LIVING

With 158 guest rooms and suites available we had the privilege of staying in one of the 38 Chedi Club Suites. These standalone units sleep a maximum of four guests and offer the feeling of a private villa, generously-sized and tastefully-decorated in traditional Omani furnishings. Taking a minimalistic approach, the living area features majlis seating that easily converts into divan-style beds. The bedroom juxtaposes dark mahogany against the ample natural light streaming through the shuttered windows, while a king-size bed provides the utmost comfort, superseded by a silver dome housing a large Arabic lantern. It’s not all traditional though as modern

touches heighten the experience and can be found in the technological aspects - a Nespresso machine and two 42-inch flat screen televisions. The bathrooms are literally the stuff of dreams (#TubEnvy), with double vanities, separate rainfall shower and a sunken tub big enough to fit an entire family! Acqua Di Parma toiletries add to the pampering nature of the property and are almost as comforting as the slippers and robes which forgo the usual ‘fluffy’ texture in favour of a more kimono-like approach. The benefits of the Club Suite also entitle guests to complimentary limousine transfers, laundry service and a mini bar

Many guests select The Chedi as a hideaway from the world, if only for a day or two. With discreet levels of service and a respect for privacy, guests are valued in a way shown by few properties in the region. Set amidst tranquil water gardens inspired by the oasis falaj system, perfectly shaped hedgerows and curved archways, The Chedi is flanked by a 370-metre stretch of private beach and it’s refreshing to see a natural coastline in the Gulf unencumbered by the construction that blights other GCC cities. With three swimming pools on site, the Long Pool is a symbol of The Chedi used in magazines and on postcards for the best part of a decade. At 103 meters in length, the body of water is recognised as the longest swimming pool in the Middle East. Lined by slender palm trees mapping out the trajectory of the water, a polished black-tile finish adds an uber-cool vibe to the monochromatic stylings of cabanas and lounge furniture. Two of the temperaturecontrolled swimming pools are reserved for the use of adults only (the Long and Chedi pools) but the Serai pool, situated close to the beach is conveniently shaded for families with young children. fact magazine

The health club and spa (the largest in Muscat) present a state-of-the-art gymnasium and a selection of treatment rooms (two of which are conveniently set up for couples). Continuing the Zen approach, the treatment rooms are home to jacuzzi baths and steam rooms, meaning all your wellness needs are taken care of in one place.

UNRIVALLED DINING

Those in search of fine dining have six restaurants, two lounges and a myriad of cuisines to choose from. Breakfast is served in The Restaurant and offers both buffet and a la carte dining beneath Omani arches and crystal chandeliers. The Restaurant is also home to The Chedi’s popular Friday Champagne Brunch, a more sophisticated and restrained affair than the ritualistic party-orientated brunches of the region. For something a little special guests can opt to dine al fresco on freshly grilled seafood at the Beach Restaurant, which is one of THE places to dine in Muscat while taking in sunset views over the Indian Ocean. The Long Pool serves up distinctive Asian fare and represents our personal favourite of The Chedi’s dining options with the pool area taking on an ethereal quality after dark.

A SERENE STAY

The beauty of a resort like this is in its proximity to Muscat’s main sights and attractions - Mutrah Souq, Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, and the opportunity for dolphin watching while promoting a feeling of complete isolation. At almost 15-years-old The Chedi, is beginning to show minor signs of wear and tear BUT with such exclusivity and Arabian hospitality on display, you’ll barely notice. Maserati have taken on the big players in the SUV segment and are already establishing a firm foothold.

M

aserati, a brand so legendary the name itself is often enough to sell the vehicle. With over 102 years of car manufacturing experience to its name, this company knows how to produce premium products. For proof, look no further than the Maserati Levante. The SUV market is not the first thought that comes to mind when considering the Maserati brand. This however has not stopped their master craftsmen from designing a premium offering for the segment. Set to rival established competitors such as the Porsche Cayenne and the Range Rover Sport, the Levante is a testament to Maserati’s first-class design mentality. Measuring in at just over five meters long and almost two meters wide, this 2.2 tonne vehicle is the largest in its class, slightly bigger than the BMW X5 and the Range Rover. Its 54

smooth bodylines and sloping roofline ensures its presence is not too bulky. The imposing grille is a dominant feature, whilst the muscular rear shoulders ensure its distinctive and attractive Italian style. The positioning of the shapely LED headlights next to the grille give the car a menacing expression, as if it is staring you down. The side profile is defined by a swaged line that runs the entire length of the car, defining the muscular shape and emphasizing its underlying power. Alloy wheels finish off the profile with style, complete with the famous Trident design neatly integrated into the spokes. The silhouette of the Levante moves from the headlights to the characteristic Maserati rear pillar, resulting in a coupĂŠ look that is enhanced by the frameless doors. Slipping inside the vehicle, the quality of the interior was immediately obvious. A lot of time and attention to detail has

gone into its creation. Every material used is of the highest quality and the cabin feels spacious and extremely comfortable, whilst the driving position ensures one has a commanding view of the road. The instrument panel follows the classic Quattroporte layout and is backlit with white light that contrasts nicely with the warm cabin lighting. It comes complete with a high resolution 8.4” capacitive touch screen, operated by a rotary control in the central console. This allows for user-friendly navigation of the new Infotainment system. The rear seats can easily accommodate three adults and the headroom is the best in its class thanks to the ergonomic configuration of the seats. The luggage compartment capacity is 580 litres and is opened and closed automatically. Once on the open road, it became obvious why this car was given the name, Levante. The car is named after a warm wind which blows over the Mediterranean and this is representative of the smooth handling this SUV has to offer. This mechanical beast is powered by a petrol V6, twin-turbo - direct injection (GDI) engine. With 430 break horse power and 600 newton meters of Torque, acceleration is aggressive, making effective handling and good grip all the more important. Fortunately, the designers made sure this vehicle has an abundance of both.

A NEARLY VIBRATION FREE RIDE, THIS CAR IS BLESSED WITH GREAT BREAKING ABILITY, A VERY

One of the best features of this automobile is it’s consideration for the environment. Producing only 189 grams of CO2 per kilometre, one need not feel guilty about driving a massive SUV. The size of this heavy vehicle is hidden in its decent turn of pace and smooth gripping on the corners. A nearly vibration free ride, this car is blessed with great breaking ability, a very important feature of a heavy vehicle. The makers at Maserati fit, as standard, a limited slip diff, and the Torque vectoring eases away at the breaks during hard cornering to help with intense turning. This car possesses the lowest center of gravity in its segment and is perfectly poised with a 50/50 weight distribution. With new electric steering and sound actuators in the exhaust, the kilometres roll silently by in this relaxing driving environment. We found the 4x4 system to be impressive. During normal driving conditions, the vehicle shifts all power to the rear wheels and only shifts power to the front when required. This proved to be endless fun on windy roads. So what more can we say? If you are looking for a luxury SUV with high performance ability, that is environmentally friendly and looks like a million dollars, the Maserati Levante is definitely worth your consideration. ✤

FERRARI PORTOFINO PREVIEW Euro Motors, Bahrain’s official Ferrari importer-dealer, staged a preview of the latest GT – Ferrari Portofino. The chic event, held at the new Ferrari showroom in Bahrain, welcomed VIP clientele to take a closer look at the latest edition of the Italian stable.

Ferrari has chosen a particularly evocative name for this exceptionally versatile drop-top car. Portofino is renowned for its charming tourist port and, over the years, has become internationally synonymous with elegance, sportiness and understated luxury. The launch colour of the new Ferrari has also been dedicated to this marvellous town: Rosso Portofino. Capable of unleashing a massive 600 cv and sprinting from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.5 seconds, the Ferrari Portofino is the most powerful convertible to combine the advantages of a retractable hard top, a roomy boot and generous cockpit space plus two rear seats suitable for short trips. The Ferrari Portofino’s all-new chassis features a significant weight saving over the California T it replaces. Thanks to the extensive use of modern production technologies, all the chassis and body-inwhite components have been redesigned with a consequent reduction in weight

despite an increase in torsional rigidity. The Portofino is a Ferrari designed to be driven every day that also effortlessly converts from an authentic ‘berlinetta’ coupé to a drop-top capable of delivering a unique Ferrari soundtrack and superb driving pleasure even in day-to-day situations. The retractable hard top (RHT) has been completely redesigned and can now be opened or closed in just 14 seconds on the move at lower speeds, making the car

even more practical. Careful modelling of the RHT housing now allows the luggage compartment to hold two cabin trolleys with the roof down and three with the roof up. Ideal for any occasion, the Ferrari Portofino represents the perfect combination of design, performance and technology. ✤

AW17

UNDERSTATED AND ELEGANT, THIS SEASON’S COLLECTION FROM COS PRESENTS NEW PROPORTIONS AND SOFT TAILORING INSPIRED BY ARCHITECTURAL LINES AND THE EXPERIMENTATION OF GEOMETRIC DRAPES AND RICH TEXTURES – OFFERING A NEW TAKE ON CLASSIC PIECES.

fact magazine

63

HER The influence of tailoring is evident in the collection, garments are reimagined with a modern twist; a wool blend suit in burgundy features menswear-inspired voluminous slacks that drape at the feet, a tailored wool blend top with zip detail is paired with a silk ivory shirt and a long deconstructed sleeveless waistcoat feels effortless in a relaxed, unstructured material. Taking its inspiration from the lines of architecture and industrial references, the collection experiments with the proportion of silhouettes and details – featuring exaggerated lapels, cuffs and vents, sharp pleats inspired by press folds and the use of geometric shapes. Bold forms are complemented by innovative and technical materials inspired by experimental art and design. Fabrics are clean and compact, whilst draped and cut in interesting ways. Accessories are inventive and forward-thinking: deep red square toed lace-up shoes with a geometric heel take centre stage alongside a structured leather shoulder bag and belt with exaggerated buckle – in the same distinctive red hue. ✤

64

fact magazine

HIM The focus on reinventing classics continues in menswear, taking a fresh and casual approach. A wool blend grey melange coat is given an effortless twist with rounded shoulders whilst a relaxed cotton poplin shirt in oatmeal is tucked into flat-front wide-legged wool trousers, revealing an updated and modern silhouette that accentuates the waist and shoulders. The urban theme is exemplified in an oversized cotton utility shirt jacket in midnight green, paired alongside wide cropped trousers with a dropped crotch in the same deep shade. A long quilted technical parka highlights the focus on new materials and the significance of bold shapes in the collection. The nod to architecture is referenced in the collection’s industrial palette of slate blue, charcoal grey, midnight green and cream. The tones are offset by a strong presence of red, inspired by the Italian architecture studio Pedevilla’s use of red-pigmented concrete at a Tyrolean fire station. Outfits are styled together with tonal colour blocking and dark shades that create undefined border lines. ✤

CULINARY SPOTLIGHT •

DIAMOND in the Kitchen La Vinoteca Barcelona has had a makeover and we are officially in love with their recent renovation, alongside their unique culinary and oenological experience that they have introduced to the Kingdom.

fact magazine

85

• CULINARY SPOTLIGHT

N

estled on the outer-edge of Block 338 lies the recently refurbished La Vinoteca Barcelona, waiting to showcase its sleek new look prior to the official opening that will be held on 6th December. I must say when we were exclusively invited prior to this date I let out a genuine squeal of excitement, La Vinoteca Barcelona is part of Bayader which hosts other luxurious brands under its belt such as Alto, Cafe Amsterdam and Delilah’s. This restaurant is already acclaimed, yet, as any strong woman will tell you, constructive criticism is key to evolving. This is where renowned architect George Karam has clearly worked his magic alongside the Torres brand, to come up with their new concept ready for the festive season and we are extremely grateful. As we walked into the premises we were greeted by a contemporary setting of earthy embellishments that draw you into the atmospheric blend of mediterranean undertones. The bar is showcases a more industrialised vibe with an option of eating at the bar, however, this only heightens the unassuming guests eating preference with no sign of pretentiousness in the air. There are royal blue wooden slats that adorn the ceiling overhead and grand wooden booths, that play homage to the barrels that wine is aged in, where you can enjoy a level of intimacy that is unparalleled in such a location. Their menu is designed to offer authentic Mediterranean gastronomy with a heavy Spanish influence that stimulates the senses and Executive Chef Joan Gomez executes this perfectly. He orchestrates a sensory journey encompassing local ingredients, unique flavours and contemporary techniques, whilst still remaining true to their traditional origins and this is paramount throughout all of their dishes. Gomez’s passion for all things food is utterly infectious and it’s a pleasure to be in his company. We were on tenterhooks as we listened to his roadmap of culinary creations and understandably we were mindlessly salivating, eager to explore the exemplary presented food. Celebrating their partnership with Bodegas Torres, their beverage menu features a large range of the finest Torres wines including a pocket-friendly range of “wine flights”, perfect for those who wish to sample different grapes to accompany your dishes. We had the privilege of our knowledgeable venezuelan host providing us with an informative drinking overview, which proved to be extremely interesting. The overall experience allowed our tastebuds to welcome the acceleration of flavours and provide a further appreciation of the recipes before us. Straight from the kitchen we were presented with

freshly baked bread that came with a trio of sauces, including my personal favourite romesco sauce, consisting of a blend of roasted pepper, garlic, roasted tomato and bread crumbs. Our journey commenced with a selection of cold starters, the Manchego and Cegina Pillows were a welcome start! These nuggets of happiness came in the form of bread pockets stuffed with manchego cheese and wrapped in smoked Spanish cured beef cecina. The presentation on this particular dish was one of cute, but, oh-so-kitsch design, perfect for that instagram upload. Trust me, you will find it hard to narrow down your snapshots on account of the impeccable presentation of each dish that leaves the kitchen, which is nothing short of impressive in this particular day-and-age. The House Smoked Salmon was thinly sliced and came with an accompaniment of pickles, red onion and homemade red fruits caviar, whereas, the Octopus Terrine pleasantly surprised everyone at the table with its melt-in-your-mouth properties leaving a subtle taste of Spanish paprika behind. My partner isn’t usually a big fan of seafood, but, he lapped up all that was put in front of us making audible sounds of appreciation along the way. My new craving in life, without a shadow of a doubt, is the phenomenal vermicelli paella called fideuá that was infused with wild mushrooms and green asparagus. This crowd pleasing favourite showcases the flavours of the raw and fresh hautecuisine ingredient that is truffle, flown in from Alba, Italy. A little fact that Joan Gomez shared with us is that truffle is a kind of mushroom that grows at approximately half a meter under the surface and is found by dogs specifically trained to do so - one of the main reasons that the price is so high, apart from its unique flavour of course! The resounding agreement of it’s grandeur taste was evident from the swift timeframe it took to demolish such beauty. For all you chocoholics I admonish you to soak up the gooeyness of their multi-layered dessert laced with toffee sauce and orange jelly, the Chocolate Hazelnut Indulgence will not disappoint. Regardless of the occasion or excuse you’ve manifested to be wined and dined, you owe it to yourself to indulge your palate and enjoy affordable luxury in these intimate surroundings. Muchas gracias La Vinoteca Barcelona! ✤

New Year, New You

Turning A New Leaf?

Yvonne Cole is a Personal Trainer and believes that when you eat clean, train hard and trust the process, your consistency and patience pays off.

Georgina Jennsen is the lady behind the popular lifestyle blog, blonde in bahrain. a social media influencer who loves all things luxurious.

2017 is over; did you achieve everything you wanted? If the answer is yes, well done to you - that’s fabulous. If not, don’t beat yourself up about it, as I know things that you weren’t expecting always come up and can displace the best-laid plans. At the start of 2017 one of my clients was planning to climb Mount Kilimanjaro but ended up getting married instead; 2018 is here and you can put those plans back into action. For those of you that did achieve all your goals it’s time to set yourself new ones. One of my clients has already set out what she wants to do once she’s had her baby, which includes the Ironman Championship as nothing is going to stop her in 2018. For all of you that didn’t manage to achieve your goals just press the reset button and start again. Think about the things you really want and put them at the top of your list. There might be a new fitness class you want to take; or take on a new personal trainer. Make sure you get enough sleep, make sure your nutrition is on point and make sure you stay hydrated. There’s a big old world out there so make sure your fit enough to enjoy it. Go to bed early, wake up early and be ready for all the challenges that may come your way.Happy 2018! ✤

It’s that time of the year again sweet peas, when we ditch our bad habits of the past, and turn over a new leaf. Hmmm…maybe not. Did you know that only eight per cent of people stick to their New Year’s resolutions? Of course there are no prizes for guessing what the two most popular resolutions are – getting fit and healthy, closely followed by losing weight. And while it’s great to make your goals health-related, most people fail to achieve them because they tend to be too restrictive and ambitious. Added to the fact that they’re often set in the wee small hours of New Year’s Eve, is there really any wonder so few of us succeed? So instead of making massive life-changing goals, ensure that they’re small and incremental, perhaps building on some good habits you’ve already established. And remember that everyday signals a new start, so if you fail to stick to your goal on New Year’s Day, there’s always tomorrow. Here are MY resolutions for 2018. 1. Intermittent fasting - for at least 14 hours from the end of my last evening meal on. It’s the easiest way to reduce calorie intake, and therefore lose weight. No calorie-counting, no complicated recipes, it really is a no-brainer. 2. Yoga every damn day - even if it’s just me, in my living room. 3. As much horse riding as possible, because it makes me happier than anything else in the world. Wish me luck, and Happy New Year! xx ✤

Hello, 2k18! Aanchal Duggal is an avid bibliophile and fashion enthusiast trying to make a living out of doing what she loves. Aanchal is new to Bahrain & exploring!

“A journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step.” – Lao Tzu. It’s that time of the year again, folks! As we usher in another year of fresh new beginnings and hopeful resolutions, the pressure to become your best possible self is at an all time high. In comes a barrage of impulsive gym memberships, hollow promises and a cabinet full of untouched vegan supplies. Sound familiar? Despite being armed with the “New Year, New Me” attitude and an arsenal of tips and tricks, you are bound to go off course. But the good news is, it is not your fault! As the saying goes, Old habits die hard. No matter how determined we are at the start of the year, the chances of our resolutions holding up past January 31st are incredibly slim. This New Year, take it a little easy on yourself. Reflect on the past year and take stock of what made your life better and what didn’t. Instead of piling on a whole new round of goals and resolutions, try to stick to the ones you’ve been working on. If it doesn’t stick the first time, don’t beat yourself up. Dust yourself off and try again! Get your priorities straight and go easy on your body and mind. Be grateful for how far you’ve come and everything that you have achieved in the past year and then continue in the same vein. Focus on the journey rather than the end goal and you’re halfway there! Here’s to a productive and amazing 2k18! ✤
