ell, the new year’s finally here but, with the current news on covid, I’m not really sure it’s something to celebrate. I’ve been OK throughout the pandemic up to now. Walking the dog, visiting a small group of friends and the occasional restaurant review trip – but early, when there’re few people

around. Now somehow, coming to the end of 2021 and entering 2022 with the situation seemingly little improved, both I and the dog are getting a bit bored.

SALES MANAGER RACHEL NAFEH ART DIRECTOR SYED MUHAMMED RAIHAN GRAPHIC DESIGNER OMNIA ELAMIR

I really feel for people who have had to home school and look after families, in sometimes very difficult circumstances, over the last couple of years – at least the dog just needs a ball throwing and a treat to chew on. Still, all this time for reflection did give me the idea for this month’s cover story in which we’ve put together a mini bucket list, some from the FACT team, others from readers and friends. I wonder if you can guess which were mine and hope they all offer some inspiration for when life gets back to normal,

PHOTOGRAPHY SACHAN CHANDRAN CONTRIBUTORS AMAL SARHAN CECILIA LERMEN GARETH WOODS LAYAL EL MAHMOOD

With the start of the year, we’ve gone a bit car crazy with two test drives as well as our regular motoring news. And, in the dining section, as always, the team got to visit some very splendid eateries – you can find out what we thought starting on page 54. We also spoke to an inspiring chef and our new team member, Amal, caught up with the artist known as Conference of Birds. Elsewhere in the magazine you’ll find lots of local news in the Listen Up section, as well as the latest in fashion, books, films and music and plenty more besides. I want to take this opportunity to wish a very Happy New Year from Team FACT to all our readers and friends, however it may turn out.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT? A distinguished local chef is championing an end to world hunger through a new campaign.

R

enowned chef, restauranteur and culinary business consultant Faisal Aldeleigan has just launched an initiative to encourage an altruistic effort towards relieving world hunger. The Bahrain-based culinary campaigner brought together 11 Michelin-starred chefs from across the globe to each contribute one of their exclusive recipes, which he put together with his own special recipe to form a cookbook as a way to raise awareness about the state of hunger in the world and encourage an active role in reducing it. The #CookingforWorldPeace project, which was presented to the United Nations, was then approved and included as part of the UN World Food Programme ‘Share the Meal’ initiative, which was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2020. “Our goal is to raise enough funds to provide 10,000 meals for children in Jordan, which is now suffering a significant economic upheaval. So far, we have achieved 3%,” said the Saudi-Arabian chef who made Bahrain his home 22 years ago. The chefs who contributed to the project include David Toutain and Claude Bosi from France, Atul Kochhar from India, Franck Giovannini from Switzerland, and Jan Hendrick van der Westhuizen from South Africa. Recipes include Vegetable Masala, Poke Dolomites, Scarpariello Spaghetti, and Faisal’s very own and very special Choco Beef Burger. Each meal costs just 800 fils, and people can donate as much as they like. “The recipes are freely available to download and enjoy. Donations come from the heart. The opportunity is there for anyone who wants to give a little to the world, say a small thank you, and 10

contribute to providing even one meal to a child,” he adds. “Every contribution goes directly to the UN, we just get the joy of knowing that there are kids being fed and whose lives are just a bit better than they were,” says the chef. “I’m humbled by the outpouring of support for a cause so close to my heart. Ultimately, it is about lending a helping hand to children, one of the most vulnerable groups of citizens, who have no access to even a basic meal.” Chef Faisal, once a banker, left the corporate world on a quest to forge a new path for himself in the culinary realm. Through challenging times, countless obstacles, and years of study in the UK and Italy, he emerged as a respected chef in Bahrain. After having success as a restaurant owner, he became a restaurant consultant in 2018, providing services under his company Chef Faisal Consultancy. Over the past 11 years he has mentored and tutored various restaurants around the island and region, as well as other businesses in the food and beverage industry. His plans going forward include initiating similar projects to relieve economic distress, as well as a local initiative to tackle food wastage in restaurants and homes, both in terms of reduction and transforming waste into usable material, such as compost. Anyone interested in donating towards the cause can do so through the #CookingforWorldPeace website or through the UN’s Share the Meal app. ✤

TREATS FOR GOOD BOYS & GIRLS Zilia Monteiro, one half of the team behind new pet bakery, Bubbles & Miche, tells us about doggy inspiration and very willing testers. When we (pet-parents) met back in June 2019 while walking our dogs, Bubbles & Michelada, on the beach, we had no clue that two years on we would be opening and running a pet barkery! Bubbles & Miche is the island’s first bakery for pets (a ‘barkery’) started by Carolina Jimenez Woolrich and me, Zilia Monteiro, with the unique concept of creating and selling human-grade gourmet treats, bakes and meals. The barkery is located at Shaharzad complex, just off Budaiya road, and launched just last month. It all started off when we began experimenting with homemade treats for our dogs as we were both unhappy with what was on offer in the Bahrain market. Many pet foods and treats are highly processed imports – and we believe that our pets deserve better. This made us realise that we needed to bring fresher options to the pet palate here in Bahrain. Compare it to a human eating dry food out of a bag every day, with no natural and fresh ingredients to give you optimal nutrition – how would that make you feel? Our vision is to change the food habits for pets in Bahrain by offering fresh, clean, healthy ingredients with total transparency – which are delicious and fun too! There’s something very assuring when you are able to read and understand all the ingredients on your pet’s food label. Bubbles & Miche produces freshly baked customised cakes for all occasions and tastes. For instance, the B&M Signature Cake is a carob flavoured speciality, the Happy Pupday Cake has peanut butter and carrots, and the Spoiled Doggy cake is for the meat-lovers. Our bestselling treats are Bubbles Crunchy Chicken, Mooolala (dried beef), Bone-a-petites (beef biscuits), Barkies (apple 12

fact magazine

and oat biscuits) and Zoomies (dried fish). We, of course, had a lot of fun working on the names! We will soon launch our new line of vet-approved cooked meals following strict guidelines from the Association of American Feed Control (AAFCO), to ensure that each meal is prepared at the highest international standards. The human-grade concept may still be something that is under scrutiny internationally, but with pet-parents making more conscious food choices, the changing trend may well exceed the current pet food standard (aka some dry food). Each of our products are sampled by our pets – Bubbles is an adopted Bahraini desert dog and Michelada is a purebred Jack Russell. Bubbles is a fussy eater, but Michelada will have just about anything that is food. Everything we make is dog-friendly, some are cat-friendly, and all our products are well-researched to suit all tastes and breeds, however we always recommend that pet-parents are aware of their pet’s allergies and dietary requirements before they place an order. We’re excited to kick off this unique barkery in Bahrain and we believe that the sky is the limit - our bigger dream is to grow our brand into a full-fledged ‘Pet Barkery’ and store in future. Visit our the barkery in Budaiya to buy some treats or place an order on Instagram @bubblesmiche today. Going from home-kitchen to the real deal has been a bit of a nightmare with the ending being the paw-fect dream come true! ✤

CONTINUED COMMITMENT TO COEXISTENCE Bahrain’s new Catholic Cathedral serves as a symbol of a constant pursuit of religious inclusivity and liberality. The new Catholic church, the Cathedral of Our Lady of Arabia, which was recently inaugurated, has gathered worldwide attention from the international Catholic community and has seen locals and expats flocking to the new national landmark. The building was completed almost nine years after 9,000sq/m of land was donated by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa for the initiative. Bahrain, known in the Middle East for being one of the most inclusive nations in terms of religious faith, has been hailed once again for its tolerance and commitment to peaceful coexistence and caring for the Christian community in providing a dedicated space for them to worship. The church, which has a capacity for 2,300 people, includes a residence for the bishop and a courtyard which can accommodate up to 6,000 visitors. It was designed by an Italian architect named Mattia Del Prete, who expressed his delight at the completion of the project saying he felt joyous and full of emotion and drawing attention to how the light changes the colour and atmosphere throughout the day. Shaikh Abdulla bin Hamad Al Khalifa was chosen by his father, His Majesty King Hamad, to inaugurate the complex in the presence of Bishop Paul Hinder and Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, Prefect of the Congregation of the Evangelisation of Peoples and representative of Pope Francis, as well as other senior officials. The Bishop stressed the success of the inauguration, intimating his joy and gratitude to have such a wonderful and extraordinary building that he is sure will be a highlight in the Kingdom. 16

The church, located at Awali, resembles a tent as described in the Old Testament in which the prophet Moses welcomed his people. The walls are made with a special stone called Pietra Serena, a type of sandstone solely crafted in Florence and frequently used in Florentine renaissance architecture. An octagonal dome serves as a canopy for the cathedral, a new congregational haven for the 80,000 Catholic residents of the island. Dr. Shaikh Khalid bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the King Hamad Global Centre for Peaceful Coexistence, applauded the country’s efforts towards diversity and inclusivity during the opening ceremony. He emphasised the event as evidence of Bahrain’s keenness on tolerance and peaceful coexistence between differing faiths and praised the achievement as an encouraging and welcoming gesture. Father Xavier Marian D’Souza, Parish Priest at Manama’s Sacred Heart Church, further acknowledged the kingdom’s leap forward as an event that has deepened its pioneering and distinguished role regionally and globally in terms of coexistence. He highlighted the fact that the Catholics residing in Bahrain as well as people of other faiths, including Hinduism, Buddhism and Judaism, find a refuge in Bahrain amid the acceptance and embrace of the peace-loving Bahraini people. ✤

The album is a refreshing new sound with regional talent combining music from their own cultures and songs that’re constantly playing on our radios these days. CREAM OF THE CROP Renowned Bahraini chef Tala Bashmi has won an illustrious culinary award. Tala Bashmi, often referred to as the voice of modern Bahraini cuisine, has been named as the winner of the Best Female Chef award in the first edition of Middle East & North Africa’s 50 Best Restaurants 2022. The renowned chef and patron of Fusions by Tala at The Gulf Hotel, Convention & Spa, will be presented with the inaugural award at the debut edition of MENA’s 50 Best Restaurants, set to take place in Abu Dhabi in February 2022. The award forms part of the organisation’s mission to honour female role models within the culinary industry and represents the first pre-announced award of the 2022 programme. Chef Tala says she knew she wanted to be a chef when she “fed someone a single bite and saw that pure joy on their face.” Adding: “Nothing can replace that.” The Bahraini-born, Swiss-trained chef has a passion for creating nostalgic culinary experiences for her guests. Her father served as an inspiration to her at an early age as they explored ingredients and local markets in Bahrain. She started a home venture called Baked by T and her delicious desserts gained local momentum. She 20

then went to the Culinary Arts Academy in Switzerland, where she gained a Master's in International Business in Culinary Management. Returning to the Middle East, she competed in the acclaimed MBC show Top Chef becoming a finalist. She took over Fusions in September 2017 and displayed a modernisation of the Bahraini cuisine she is now famous for. “It is an absolute honour to be recognised with the first ever Best Female Chef award as part of the inaugural MENA’s 50 Best Restaurants 2022,” says Tala. “It has always been a dream to put my culinary heritage on the global map, highlighting it not only within the MENA region but around the world. One of my main goals as a chef is to bridge the gap between high-end gastronomy and simple food, making each meal a journey.” ✤

FOLLOW YOUR DREAMS Over the past couple of years, we’ve all had more than enough of restrictions, staying home and being just that little bit (or possibly a lot) worried about the pandemic. During that time, many of us have escaped our everyday reality with imagining the things we would most love to do or achieve in our lives when the world gets back to normal. We certainly have! We’re sharing with you some of the items on our carefully considered Bucket List, you might find them inspirational. fact magazine

TAKE TO THE WAVES Boating, in this part of the world, tends to conjure up images of motor-powered yachts, from small to immense, slicing their way through the waves. Even the traditional dhows have engines these days. But the lure of the sailing boat is what’s captured our hearts. Gliding gently and silently into the sunset as the wind ruffles the sails. A pretty picture, no? However, for our bucket list, gently gliding could not be further from our minds. We’re all about action and one of life’s really big adventures, in the form of the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race. A biennial race that takes paying amateur crews on one or more legs of a circumnavigation of the globe. Eleven specially-designed identical yachts take part with professional skippers and other qualified people, alongside the volunteers, on a 10-month journey. The beauty of this race is that you don’t have to be an experience sailor to take part. There’s a four-week training period for volunteers carried out aboard the yachts they’ll be crewing and the vessels carry a double crew including the professionals. A great way to get started is to check out www. clipperroundtheworld.com and maybe think about booking some lessons in our somewhat milder waters to get a taste for sailing sans motor – it’s actually a great fitness activity and a good way to meet new friends. So, this year, we’ll be heading to Bahrain Yacht Club, clutching our motion sickness pills and taking a step towards the adventure of a lifetime.

GET SCRIBBLING Did you spend your childhood with your head in a book or engrossed in an electronic reading device? Did you make up stories, probably never sharing them with anyone? All common things for kids, right? But, did that obsession with storytelling carry on into later life? Always scribbling story ideas on scraps of preciously preserved paper or, more likely these days, making notes on your phone that you keep meaning to develop? Then you, my friend, are a frustrated writer! Now, we may make our living writing the words you see each month but that doesn’t stop us dreaming of becoming published authors – you know, the next J.K. Rowling or E.L. James (only better written, of course). But seriously, never mind the book tours, celebrity and multi-million-dollar publishing deals; for us, the candle of that childhood dream still burns bright after all these years and we would love to see our names on the cover of a bona fide book. And it turns out that, these days, there’s an alternative to the traditional hunt for an agent and publisher. Options such as self-publishing on Amazon and other websites is now both common and, potentially, quite lucrative. If you share our dream start out by joining a writers’ group to instill discipline and get feedback. Carve out some time each day to write. Even if it’s only 20 minutes, it’s a start and will become a good habit. And never, ever stop scribbling down those ideas – you just never know what might become the next blockbuster. Meanwhile, we’re scanning lists of publishers and promising to get that already half written book out of the note pad and onto our screen.

BAILA FLAMENCO EN MADRID Hands up all those who’ve ever watched a dance movie or performance and wished they could move like that. Whether it be the suppressed energy and forbidden ambition of the ballet in Billy Elliot, the classic disco moves of Saturday Night Fever or watching Kpop heroes Omega taking on super-hard dance challenges on Tik Tok, there’s a dance (and a dance video) for absolutely everyone. For us, it’s the passion of Flamenco. The drama and sinuous rhythm of the music matched to the stamping and tapping of the dancers’ feet, the women’s dresses, the castanets, guitars and eloquent reminiscence of times almost past. In 2010 flamenco was recognised by Unesco as part of the World’s Intangible Cultural Heritage and references to the music date back to 1774. It originated among the Gypsy people of southern Spain and went on to become a worldwide phenomenon. These days, the Spanish capital, Madrid, is recognised as the home of the world’s best flamenco and we’d love nothing better than to visit and experience this musical art form ourselves. But we know that this inspiring but technical dance style is not one to be emulated without significant study and practise. Of course, the obvious step is to take classes but if, like us, you can’t find a flamenco class locally or simply can’t fit regular sessions into a busy schedule, we suggest beginning with any form of dance to get your body moving from following flamenco videos online to joining in a salsa class at your local bar or even just shaking your booty around the kitchen at home. Before you know it, restrictions allowing, you’ll be booking your flights and getting immersed in the world of Spanish dance.

BEST FOOT FORWARD We have to admit that this one’s smacks of ‘New Year, New You’ but it’s honestly been a long-held ambition to compete in a triathlon. Yes, we’re desk jockeys who can raise a sweat just coming up the stairs to the office but this is something that’s been on the radar for several years. We simply love the idea of being among the wetsuit-clad hoards throwing themselves en masse into the region’s somewhat chilly winter waters to complete the swim part of the challenge then exiting the water to bike or run the next stage. However, there’s the small inconvenience of our current fitness levels, or lack thereof, to consider. So, how to begin? Well, first things first, if you’re a non-swimmer, then you need to learn. The distance for a mini or super sprint triathlon can be as low as 400km for the swim but, trust us, that can feel like an awfully long way if you’re not a particularly strong swimmer. So, learn and then swim regularly building up your distance. Most of us have ridden a bike at some stage but how many could set out cold and take on a 10km ride in the morning? Yeah, but no! Get yourself a comfortable bike, join a cycling club to make sure you have regular sessions and get pedaling. Not a runner? Then we recommend the Couch to 5k running programme which was developed by the UK’s National Health Service and has been taken up by would-be runners all over the world. You can find details at www.nhs.uk and there are loads of apps you can download to help. It’s also a good idea to join a local running group such as Bahrain Road Runners Club for regular meets and details of events. Put them all together and get ready for the run, ride and swim of your life. 26

A WALK ON THE WILD SIDE If you’ve ever watched TV or online documentaries of African wildlife, from the big five – elephants, lions, leopards, rhino and buffalo – to their slightly less famous but still wonderful counterparts, such as giraffe and impala, you can’t help but be enthralled by these amazing creatures. And, if you’re anything like us, at least one item on your bucket list involves getting up close and personal with some of them. Of course, you could go on a safari, which are available with varying levels of comfort and luxury and daily or twice-daily game drives. But, if you really want to get to know these incredible animals, then imagine volunteering at a sanctuary or game reserve where you are sure to get a once-in-a-lifetime experience while learning more about these creatures, their habitats and the people who live alongside them. Harnas Wildlife Foundation, in Namibia, has a great backstory and a good reputation. Or check out wildlifeact.com for ethical projects across the African continent. To get involved closer to home, you could begin by sponsoring an animal on any of the volunteer projects which will usually get you updates on your refuge resident as well as species-specific info. Or try volunteering at a local animal sanctuary such as Bahrain Animal Rescue Centre or the BSPCA to get a feel for what it’s like to actually be around animals. You can find information for both on social media.

GOING GREEN This one might be the most important to achieve. Because it’s about giving back to Mother Earth. The Emissions Gap Report 2021 indicated a global rise of 2.7 degrees in temperature by the end of the century, which is well above the goals of the Paris climate agreement and is expected to lead to catastrophic changes in Earth’s temperature. So why not play your own little part in making a change. Your carbon footprint is the amount of greenhouse gases you produce as you live your life. You can use an online website carbonfootprint.com to find out how much you’re doing and what happens if you take some steps. Calculating carbon footprint includes approximately how many kilometres you travel by car, bus, train and plane, the energy usage in your home, your spending on shopping and the composition of your diet. Some of our suggestions to reduce your carbon footprint? For starters eat low on the food chain. This means eating fruits, veggies, greens and beans. Opt for organic and local products that are in season. This will reduce transporting food from places far away — reducing the emissions caused by trucks, ships or rail. Avoiding buying fast fashion and instead opting for recycled, sustainable clothing is also a step forward. To directly impact the environment positively, you can also pledge to planting trees, two trees every week. This would result in you planting 104 trees in one year alone.

ADVENTURE AT ALTITUDE If adventure is one of your pursuits, then hiking Mount Kilimanjaro should definitely be on your list. It’s tough, long and challenges you to the core in the most beautiful way. You’ll get to experience so many different backdrops in one hit. The journey from the base to the peak is quite similar to travelling from the equator to Antarctica in a matter of a few days as the path spans over five distinct ecological zones, from rain forest to the frozen zones, with temperatures almost below freezing. Layering up and layering down is just a part of it whilst trekking through it. Just when you start thinking it’s getting cold, the weather will change tremendously encouraging you to strip down to shorts. This is the beauty of this place. Navigating slowly through the steep and treacherous mudslides — rock by rock and step by step. We’d be lying to you if we said hiking ‘Kili’ is easy. Because it’s not. You’ll have to be prepared for at least three to eight hours of hiking a day for five to 11 days straight, so you will definitely need to get in shape. On your feet and let’s go!

BRING ON THE BAND It’s time to stop pretending to pin a favourite guitar solo in the shower. Step up and take the lead. Whether you dream of swaying crowds of people or playing something for your own self enjoyment and peace, a musical instrument can for sure help you express your thoughts in a way better way. All it’ll require of you is a little patience and voila! You’ll find the hidden artist in you. Start with online courses first and get familiar with the type of instrument and its levels before joining a class physically. With online courses you’ll start with the basics, going from learning how to hold the instrument and then to playing easy scales and chords. It’s always a good idea to begin by producing or reproducing simple rhythms to get familiar with keys and which string makes which voice when struck with a specific force or pressure. If you master that quickly, then this is just the first level of many different advanced-level journeys. Also, don’t just practise solo. Whatever you learn, play it for others, in front of others — so they can give you honest feedback and root for you to do even better. It is totally okay if you have no prior knowledge of music notes. You only need to practise for half an hour each day to see major improvements. So, are you set to surprise your friends with a little performance the next time you all gather?

HEAD TO THE HIMALAYAS Meditation and retreat together is a proven process for training your mind to focus, directing your thoughts, increasing awareness of yourself and your surroundings and connecting with your higher self. What better than sitting, breathing and going for inner and outer adventure that could lead to a lifetransforming experience of growth and self-discovery. The best way to maximise relaxation is by getting closer to nature. Breathing in and out in a fertile valley that provides isolation from the rest of the world in an idyllic, utopian environment of sorts. Biting organic apricots, cherries, grapes, plums and peaches while absorbing the breathtaking yearround scenery is something you need to start your year. Offgrid destination for American and European backpackers since the 1990s, Hunza, located in the Himalayas (northern part of Pakistan) is a place to be this year. Even arriving there requires you to slow down. Rough passages and steep ridges will excite you to forego the Jeep and trek through on your own two feet. Serena Hotel in Hunza offers detoxifying hydrotherapy spa treatments overlooking the valley for a perfect getaway. There are several meditation sessions offered there as well, on an open-air terrace that works really well to help connect your energies. It’s a proven thing: all the stress and negativity that you take with you will be washed away effortlessly, leaving you with a feeling of just being. No wonder, the Hunza tribe, one of the most mysterious tribes on Earth, lead the happiest and healthiest life with an average life span of 100 years.

PICK UP A PAINTBRUSH Do you think of yourself as a creative person? Even if you don’t, give it a chance. Try your hand at canvas and pursuing painting as it has massive potential to promote positive mental health. Painting helps to let it all out and express yourself and your emotions. Such creative activity can enable a person to process the stress and strain more successfully, whilst also giving a creative, calm perspective to situations. So where to start? When it comes to paints, there are many different types you can choose from. However, three main options to consider are watercolours, oils and acrylics. It’s all about flexibility and looking for what works for you. However, if you’re new at it — try oil paints. A little expensive and they take time to dry out but once dried you can always repaint and add layering. So, there’s room for mistakes and redoing everything all over again. But also, there’s nothing that’s a mistake in art — art is just art. Once you’ve got all the relevant materials, putting everything on canvas might still be a task you can’t quite get a hang of. You can draw inspiration from your surroundings. From a vase of flowers on your credenza to the outside view you see. Something simple could make such a stunning minimalistic piece of art. Don’t strive for perfection at once, but just try to explore your colour palette and what you like to make out of it.

• ISLAND RIDES

I

n 2006 Audi launched its first SUV, the Q7. It was greeted with great enthusiasm by the general public and motorcar aficionados alike. Audi went on to expand the ‘Q’ range to five dedicated ‘Q’ models, including the launch of the Q5 in 2009, the Q3 in 2012, the Q2 in 2016 and the Q8 in 2019. Subsequently, this German-based super brand went on to launch further generations of each model, including their very latest version of the Q5. This month, compliments of the outstanding team at Audi Centre Bahrain, FACT magazine got behind the wheel of the 2022 Audi Q5 45 TFSI Sportback Quattro, an experience we won’t be forgetting anytime soon. The Q5 Sportback is instantly impressive to the eye, exuding the powerful yet refined presence that is now synonymous with the ever popular ‘Q’ range. At the front, the LED headlights, with their signature daytime running light feature, are fitted as standard, whilst the flawlessly designed honeycomb octagonal Singleframe grille contributes greatly to the vehicle’s robust appearance. At the flanks, elegant lines flow effortlessly from front to rear, emphasising the stylish five-double-spoke alloy wheels as well as the subtle roof spoiler. The body of the Q5 tapers acutely at the back end, leading the eye to the wellcrafted LED rear combination lamps. Four chrome-plated oval tailpipe trims sit under the tail end bumper, yet another striking feature highlighting the sporty intent of the new Q5. Slipping inside the Sportback, we were greeted by uber comfortable, electrically adjustable sport seats with four-way lumbar support and memory function, alongside a host of other driver friendly features. The dark colours of the interior are complemented by contrasting stitching located on both the steering wheel and seating. The three-spoke, flat bottomed, sports contour, leather wrapped, multifunctional steering wheel, complete with electromechanical power steering and electric adjustment capabilities, is so impressive, it deserves a paragraph of its very own. As we carefully inspected every inch of the vehicle, we noted that all the materials, trimmings and finishes throughout were of a premium quality, as expected from a prestigious brand such as Audi. Space wise, there is ample head, shoulder and leg room for all passengers, with the adjustable rear bench able to comfortably fit up to three adults. The sense of spaciousness inside the vehicle is enhanced through the presence of a panoramic glass sunroof. Optimum comfort levels are maintained with the aid of the threezone climate control system. The luggage compartment has a capacity of 510-litres, a volume that can be increased up to 1,480-litres with the rear seats folded flat. A power tailgate has been included as standard for everyday convenience. As far as displays, controls and infotainment are concerned, the Q5 Sportback features the MIB 3, a third-generation modular infotainment system. When installed, the Audi virtual cockpit plus exhibits a 12.3-inch display as well as a practical head-up display. The MMI navigation plus infotainment system is also paired with a 10.1-inch touch display and can be activated via voice control using the phrase ‘Hey Audi’. We also connected our smartphones to this user-friendly system which allowed us access to an array of additional features. For added safety and convenience, the most important displays and functions can be effortlessly 36

accessed through the multifunction steering wheel. Performance wise, our 2022 all-wheel-drive Audi Q5 boasts a 2.0 TFSI, inline four-cylinder petrol engine that produces a displacement of 1,984cc, a max power output of 265hp and 370Nm of torque. The crisp sound of this capable engine is testament to the design quality of the Q5 and even the smallest exertion of pressure on the accelerator delivers an immediate and impressive response. Combined with a seven-speed S tronic transmission, a 12V mild hybrid engine, sports suspension and the quattro drive with ultra-technology, the new Q5 is able to accelerate from 0-100km/h in 6.1 seconds and has an electrically capped top speed of 240km/h. All of this coupled with a dual circuit braking system with hydraulic assist, enabled us to be in complete control of the driving experience and we can honestly say we had an extremely enjoyable day manoeuvring this finely tuned machine around the city streets. Additionally, the latest generation Q5 has been fitted with multiple driver assist systems. These include adaptive cruise control, lane change assist, turn assist, swerve assist, cross-traffic assist, exit warning assist, parking assist, a tyre pressure monitoring system, a pre-sense city system to help avoid collisions, multiple airbags and so much more. ✤

BEHIND THE WHEEL •

A

t FACT, we always love trying something new, especially when that something is the fabulous 2022 Toyota Land Cruiser GX-R. We were most excited when presented with the keys by the outstanding team at Toyota Bahrain. Toyota is a massively successful Japanese brand, that has been developing and producing these beloved SUVs for over 70 years, and in the process has established the Land Cruiser as a household name. Upon first inspection we were taken by the robust and powerful presence of the GX-R. Available in 10 distinct exterior colours, this fully-fledged off-roader really looks the part with its bulky frame and array of functional features. At the front end, the radiator grille, along with the three-bulb LED headlamps, have been positioned higher to reduce the risk of damage during off-road adventuring. Constantly illuminated clearance lamps are connected to the grille ensuring you don’t bump the vehicle’s large frame at any time. At the flanks, the powerful silhouette of the vehicle is defined by sharply contrasting lines, whilst roof rails and 20inch alloy wheels add to the rugged nature of the vehicle. The completely flat bonnet joins a vertical grille at a near

90-degree angle, a design element matched by the roof and back doors. The contemporary design of the rear is defined by its modern shape that mirrors the straight lines of the rest of the vehicle and underscores the SUV’s solid stance. LED rear combination lamps are fitted as standard, while the wide rear bumper doubles as a step to assist with entering the vehicle. Once seated in the two-tone, synthetic leather, power adjustable front seats, we found the all-new interior of the 2022 model to be a sophisticated, practical and comfortable space. All materials used are of a high quality and everything has been positioned to maximise convenience. All the controls and switches have been cleverly grouped and are simple to operate, even while tackling challenging terrain. The cabin itself offers a multitude of advanced features including fourzone climate control and wireless charging for smartphones. The cluster gauge features a seven-inch, colour, multifunction display along with a 12.3-inch multimedia display. This smartly designed and user-friendly system supports both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Optional features include a 14-speaker JBL sound system, a Rear Seat Entertainment (RSE) system with 11.6-inch, dual touch-screen displays as well as smart entry and start systems, amongst others. • BEHIND THE WHEEL wise, this vehicle comfortably accommodates seven adults in its three rows of seating, with plenty of head, shoulder and leg room on offer. The luggage compartment also offers ample space to pack for long off-road adventures, especially with the third row of seats folded flat. Performance wise, the 2022 GX-R is powered by a newly developed 3.5-litre, V6 twin-turbo petrol engine that surpasses the performance of a conventional V8. It produces 409hp and up to 650Nm of torque. This capable engine is coupled with a 10-speed automatic transmission, a unit that assists in the reduction of fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by up to 10% compared to the outgoing generation. This setup allows the GX-R to accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in a respectable 6.7 seconds, pretty impressive for a vehicle of this weight and size. The drivability factor of this car is where it really begins to shine. The 2022 GX-R offers three driving modes, namely Eco, Normal and Sports. The full-time 4WD System with 50Mode Multi-terrain Select, along with Active Traction Control, CRAWL Control and Turn Assist Function ensure you are able to conquer any terrain this vehicle encounters. We found the handling of this SUV to be spot on and along with its effective braking system, superb traction control and superior cornering abilities, this is one of the most enjoyable vehicles we have ever had the privilege of test driving. We can only imagine everything the Land Cruiser VX-R and GR Sport versions, also available in the 2022 range, have to offer. Safety wise, the designers at Toyota have included a range of safety and assistance features to ensure the wellbeing of you and your loved ones. These include 10 SRS airbags including side-curtain airbags for all three rows, Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Traction Control (TRC), Anti-lock Brake System (ABS), Brake Assist (BA), Parking Support Brake (PKSB) Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA), Downhill Assist Control (DAC), Tyre Pressure Warning System (TPWS), a clearance sonar featuring eight sensors located on both front and rear bumpers, and so much more. ✤

Why did you decide to go into the hospitality industry? Did you always know this was what you wanted to do? All the best things that happened to me in life are those that happened unexpectedly and entering the hospitality industry is one of them. When I was 18 years old, I was looking for a summer job to save some money to travel to Greece. I found a job in one of the hotels in my home town Milan, Italy, as a night auditor where I worked for two months and then flew to Greece for my dream vacation. Since that time, and because I enjoyed working for the hotel, I knew that hospitality was what I wanted to continue my career in. What is the best thing about your job? I have a long, exciting history of working for hotels in different regions of the world. One of the benefits of working in the hotel industry is the opportunity to have new experiences and witness different cultures. While the benefits to your general well-being from vacations have long been reported, the same can be said for experiencing new cultures which gives you the chance to learn new skills and learn more about yourself.

How have you found the changeover to coming under the umbrella of Accor? Being part of the world's biggest multi-brand hospitality group is a major success with limitless opportunities. Accor has equipped us from every angle and provided us with a solid foundation of tools and resources that made the transition very smooth and allows us to achieve our true potential. Not to mention, the great support extended to us by our Accor colleagues. Where has been your favourite city to work throughout your career and why? To be fair, they all are different and all are unique! Each destination had something special that touched my heart. In fact, the unique traits, social codes and traditions of each country inspire me. I am truly grateful to have had the opportunity to work in and explore many countries around the globe, as I always say: we, who work in the hospitality field, are lucky to be getting paid to be tourists and travel the world! What do you like to do when you are not working? In my free time I enjoy socialising with friends and visiting new restaurants and places in Bahrain. ✤ fact magazine

• VOICE FROM THE KITCHEN

A JOURNEY IN FLAVOURS Kevin De Guzman, Head Chef at Sato Japanese Restaurant, The Gulf Hotel Bahrain, Convention & Spa, tells us about what excites his kitchen practice and his love of granny cooking.

When and why did you first become interested in Japanese cuisine? It definitely wasn’t love at first sight. I grew up around food and bar. My parents and many other family members worked in the industry. Also, my grandma used to cook a lot. She wasn’t the warmest granny, and cooking was her way of showing love. But a real fascination started with the work itself. Getting paid to light stuff on fire and play with knives really worked for me in my 20s. When I got better at it, I found that the combination of adrenaline and repetitive movement was almost like a drug. Not uncommonly, I’d spend some portion of my day in a sort of trance state. Eventually your body just knows what to do. I just remember many times being very happy and amazed for several hours. Scientific food got kind of trendy for a while and, for me, that triggered an interest in the how and why and all of the weird 52

techniques. I read everything I could find about food. That’s when the sheer fun and the bro-iness of the kitchen started to turn more intellectual. Japanese Cuisine has had a huge impact on me. I became curious and really interested in the cuisine so I studied about it. The way that Japanese food is prepared, with great care and beautiful simplicity, says a lot about Japanese culture and the way Japanese people treat all of their work. Many ingredients are selected based on their season so they are served at their best and recipes have been passed down from generation to generation so each aspiring chef benefits from years of wisdom. I became obsessed with the traditional Japanese cuisine, or ‘Washoku’. It revolves around the concept of seasonality. Presentation is also key. Different dishes are served on or in complementary types of tableware, varying in shape, size, colour and pattern. Washoku is more than just a type of cuisine, it’s an art form.

VOICE FROM THE KITCHEN •

Have you had any particularly important mentors along the way? I first met Chef Naotaka Tokuhisa when I was a commissary chef as part of the opening team for an outlet in Bahrain in 2012. He was in charge of training the kitchen team. I was told that I would not last more than a month given his strict standards. However, I ended up working with him for more than four years. One of Chef Naotaka’s phrases in the kitchen is “Do not succumb to the human nature of being lazy”. He is rigorous and has high expectations for the quality of food and service. One of my deepest memories is of him casting a strict eye on the food. One needs to consider the three tenets of cooking in Japanese cuisine— the balance of taste, technique and timing. He would not show us a dish’s recipe or tell us how it is cooked directly, but he expected us to experiment and perfect the recipes on our own. He always had an eye for the small details. It was only through trying that we could experience it for ourselves and perfect our dishes. Following his style, I will get two of my staff to cook the same dish and let my staff try the two versions and share their thoughts on why each version turned out differently. Then, I will explain the differences between how these two dishes turned out. Kazuo Takagi, a two-star Michelin Chef, was also a mentor in terms of shaping my perception of what food can achieve. He is someone who dares to break expectations of what food can be, by being inventive and taking risks. He taught me that, with rigour, there are no real boundaries to our expression as chefs. Our talent lies in our tradition, our taste buds, and our ability to translate these heartful lessons from our childhood and past

into every dish we serve. Takagi-san is one of the most important chefs in gastronomic history. For him to acknowledge and recognise that all clients are equally important is a learning I hold to my heart and the reason why I want Sato to be a place that welcomes everyone like family with open arms. Is there one chef you would really love to share a kitchen with and, if yes, why? Not a chef, but with my late grandma. Granny cooking is taken for granted, and it’s somehow not considered ‘proper cooking,’ though of course it is. There’s something about grandma energy that commands instant respect and keeps young cooks in line. With the señoras, everyone is on their best behaviour—the language, everything—just by having them in the room. Overall, my grandmother proved dedication, time and love are the three essential qualities that make anyone the best cook. What is your signature dish and what makes it popular or special? Nigiri Sushi. I insist on using only the freshest seafood imported or caught daily from our suppliers. The key to my signature dish is not the fish, but the rice. Fish on its own does not produce the best taste; only by combining it with rice can the full spectrum of flavours be achieved. The sushi rice is dressed in a secret blend of vinegars before and it is draped over with a slice of fish. I depend on my years of expertise to prepare the best rice and pair it with the most ideal fish – that's what makes my sushi special. ✤ fact magazine

he interiors have been given an upgrade. The open kitchen offers a great view of the chefs as they go about creating their fabulous dishes. There is a long table directly in front of the kitchen where special-event cooking demonstrations can be held as well as a private dining room. The interiors are warm and welcoming and, during the current cooler weather, there’s the option to eat on the terrace overlooking the pool and the pretty gardens. That’s what we did and I highly recommend it. It was a pleasure to meet the property’s new Executive Sous Chef, Heros de Agostinis from Rome, who is currently working to train Primavera’s staff on the new menu he has created. We were lucky enough to have him join us at our table to explain the dishes we were about to try and make his own personal recommendations. Since autumn is truffle season, and, since I am slightly obsessed with the flavoursome fungi, I simply had to try some dishes from the truffle tasting menu. I started with Carpaccio di Manzo Croccante – crispy beef carpaccio with dry-aged parmesan, rocket leaves and Umbria black truffle. The thinly sliced, seasoned beef lies on a flat disc of crunchy baked parmesan. Add in a generous topping of shaved truffles and both myself and my dining companion were in taste-sensory heaven! She had grilled scallops with cucumber gazpacho which, in a pleasing show, was poured at the table. A dedicated foodie, she declared the scallops to be some of the best she’s ever tasted on the island. I tried a mouthful and was seriously impressed

• CULINARY SPOTLIGHT with both the texture – soft and yielding – and the flavour – delicate and sweet. For this dish, the gazpacho was the perfect accompaniment to avoid drowning out the seafood. Next came Spaghetti di Gragnano Cacio e Pepe with raw Sicilian red prawns and Amalfi lemon. The prawns are served raw, about which I was slightly concerned, but Chef Heros explained the process by which they are harvested in southern Italian waters and immediately frozen on board the boats as they need to be eaten really fresh. The fishermen only sell the unfrozen ones to local restaurants as they can become tainted really quickly. Immediate freezing means the exquisite flavour is retained. They are juicy and slightly sweet, making a flavoursome addition to the cheesy, chunky pasta. My dining companion had Bottoni di Pappa al Pomodoro – tomato ravioli with baked herb ricotta. It sounds like such a simple dish but ended up being one of the standouts of the night. The warm tomato sauce with sprigs of Italian thyme perfectly complemented the al dente pasta packets of softly melting cheese – I think I ate almost as much of her dish as I did my own. We followed with pumpkin risotto and both opted for a generous topping of Alba truffles, grated at our table. As you would expect, this the perfect comfort food dish. The rich scent and taste of the cheese welcomed the pumpkin to form a perfect flavour combination and the topping of truffles, deep and slightly gamey in taste, along with a hint of star anise, presented the ideal foil adding a touch of flamboyance.

Last up for the savouries was Filleto di Manzo Black Angus with aubergine parmigiana and basil oil for me. And lamb chops with stuffed baby artichokes alla Romana for my friend. Both were fabulous. The beef was perfectly cooked, lightly charred on the outside and temptingly yielding and deep red inside. The aubergine and parmesan combination added the exact level of carby comfort required but without being overblown. The lamb chops were expertly rendered. Pink on the inside, tender rather than chewy and with a delightful piquancy. For dessert, I tried the Tiramisu which has a rich coffee taste and perfectly creamy texture. My dining companion went for the chef ’s special, Heros’ Sunday Cake, which was the second outright triumph of the evening and comes with its own story of when chef’s grandmother would collect him from school in his native Italy and would make something similar as a snack that clearly left a big impression. A combination of sweet flakey pastry with milk ice cream and chocolate sauce, this dish is a great indication of the childhood that inspired Chef Heros. It’s sweet but not overly so and the homemade ice cream is fabulously creamy. Granny sure knew what she was doing. At the end of the evening, we were convinced that everyone should try out the new menu at Primavera. Do it, it’s delicious! ✤

THE BRUNCH

FOR FOOD AND FUN Liz O’Reilly headed to LNT in Adliya to check out a brunch menu that serves up nonstop entertainment alongside a great variety of food. Weekend venue sorted!

DINING DELIGHT •

A

rriving at Lanterns is always a relief to see the reserved parking area in this hugely popular part of Block 338. And, heading into the restaurant itself, I was again impressed to discover that LNT is actually an over 21s space – perfect for a really enjoyable brunch with grown-up friends. The atmosphere here is welcoming with a retro feel. A plethora of metal signs and artworks adorns the walls, seating is comfortable and there’s an impressively well-stocked bar to take care of all your beverage needs. Entertainment from a live band, which changes weekly, and DJ Lina Colada, runs throughout both the brunch itself, which is from 12pm to 4pm on Friday and Saturday, but also into the after-brunch party, a one-of-a-kind buzzing, fun affair. LNT is also smoker-friendly (phew). There's a neat, pretty terrace which will appeal to nature lovers with its abundant greenery. Temperature controlled for comfort, it's a great spot to dine or enjoy sundowners without missing out on the music and atmosphere. Or, if brunchers prefer, they can partake of the feast downstairs in the ever-popular Lanterns garden. Two menus are available for brunch, one which offers exclusively LNT fare, the other boasting favourite dishes from both LNT and Lanterns. We began with starters to share. Sizzling Wagyu Beef Skewers; Baked Mushrooms filled with cheddar cheese, onions and leeks; Thai-style Chicken Satay with peanut sauce; and Jalapeno Cheese Balls – breaded cheddar and Emmental with parsley, coriander and jalapenos. What a treat. The sauce on the Wagyu skewers, though a simple, spicy soy sauce and beef reduction, perfectly hit the spot in terms of flavour and really brought out the very best in the bite-sized chunks of high-quality meat. And the crunchy vegetables made

for an interesting texture combination alongside the tender juiciness of the flesh. The satay chicken, which, of course, needs no introduction, was exactly as we had anticipated, the sweet/ salty sauce enveloping the chicken nibbles in a way that played to the very familiarity of the dish. Cheese balls were hot and crunchy on the outside, the interior melting delightfully for an intense cheesy flavour hit made all the more special with the herbs and the startling bite of the jalapenos. The mushrooms were, for me, the star on this occasion. The firm, almost meaty flesh of the fungi hiding a delicious combination of creamy cheese, onions and leeks – flavours I would never have thought to put together but which worked so very well that I kept coming back for more, eventually getting my fingers slapped away to give someone else a chance! I think I may actually return to LNT on a quiet afternoon for a double portion of these with a good book and a glass of hops to indulge in some people watching from that terrace. Next, we enjoyed a trio of hummus – avocado, regular and beetroot – an opportunity for the chefs to really show off, since hummus is the simplest dish but one that can be the hardest to perfect. They certainly had no problem whatsoever. I was intrigued by the avocado version, which tasted strongly of the fruit and had an almost mousse-like texture. The bright pink of the beetroot one was beautiful to look at and sweet to taste. But, as usual, the original, for me, was the favourite. Perfectly textured with not too much olive oil and just the right hint of garlic. Served with crunchy bread and corn chips, we really could not ask for more. Almost replete from the starters, we chose to share a main course and went with my dining companion’s recommendation of Stuffed Cheesy Cannelloni – pasta filled with spinach, chicken, ricotta and mozzarella. What a great choice this was. Super

flavourful with melting cheeses, teasing hints of herbs and an amazing texture thanks to the perfectly rendered pasta, which had just enough bite to make it interesting without presenting a challenge to get to the delicious interior. I must admit, pasta would usually be my last choice from a menu. But this changed my mind. It was a dish of such completeness that I found myself falling a little bit in love. By this point, we were absolutely full to bursting point and truly could not manage dessert. But I am told LNT serves a mean apple crumble with cream. Might just have to come back for that too. Throughout our meal we were served Virgin Mojitos, a refreshing long drink for a warm day. And, since we had decided to forego dessert, we decided to retreat to the terrace to relax as the sun went down. ✤

WHOLEHEARTEDLY WHOLESOME At Mezza House, Sara Waddah found herself agreeing with the saying that "There is no sincerer love than the love of food!" 62

FOODIE CORNER •

T

ucked away on the first floor of Atrium Mall, we headed over to Janabiyah to visit Mezza House Bahrain. Looking up from the outside, you're not really able to judge, but once you arrive inside, you'll realise this establishment is far larger than you expected. Fit for all the different types of outings you may find yourself a part of, Mezza House Bahrain consists of a large outdoor area, a special family area, and a separate indoor smoking area – making it perfect for catch-ups with friends, family lunches, or even those solo trips when you want to unwind. It is well-lit during the day, thanks to the large windows that surround the entire venue, and the blue and white décor goes in line with the brand's identity. We made ourselves comfortable on the lush seats and were handed iPads to flick through the digital menu to see what we had in store for the afternoon. With a broad menu that contains a ton of variety and options, Mezza House Bahrain serves up a delectable array of Arabic, Lebanese and international dishes that exhibit simple, fresh and homemade techniques at their best. Radiating Middle Eastern culture around the venue, the staff were not only the sweetest but also extremely accommodating to all our requests and questions. Making sure that our experience was wholesome from the start to the end. So lovely. Starting us off with a Mixed Mezza Platter that gave us the best of both worlds, out came six different sample-sized portions of some of their best hot and cold mezze. Consisting of all our favourites, hummus, tabouleh, fattoush, falafel and kibbeh, the assortment of finger food was freshly prepared, perfectly seasoned and just the right amount for our starting dishes.

• FOODIE CORNER Trying something a little different, we were beyond curious about getting our hands on their best-selling Nacho Salad. Trust that all our curiosities were put to rest when it arrived though! Who knew that a combination of fresh parsley, nacho chips and ranch dressing could automatically become one of our favourite salads? Thoroughly impressed by the dish, it was easy to note that the key takeaways we agreed on were that the simplicity, as well as the freshness of the ingredients, played major roles in making it what it was. Switching it up with a definite shocker to our taste palates, we delved into the Knock Out Shrimp starter, which definitely shook us to our core. Seasoned to precision, then deep-fried before being coated with a generous amount of spicy mayo, this dish was completely different to all the others we've had so far, reinforcing the versatility of the restaurant, as well as their capability to bring out different cuisines and tastes. Making sure we saved some space for the main courses, out came one of our favourite Lebanese delicacies, the Ouzi Lamb. Consisting of baked lamb and rice that was prepared with a blend of different spices, the well-marinated and prepared dish hit the nail on the head. From the tenderness of the meat to the aromas of all the spices, the Ouzi Lamb made my heart feel warm and nostalgic. As waves of reminiscence crashed over me, not only was I beyond satisfied by but I felt a smile creep over my face as I enjoyed what felt like a good, wholesome, homemade meal. Adding Lamb Chops to the mix, our dining table began to look like the best place for a carnivore (more lamb the merrier, right?). Served with a side of green salad and brought out aesthetically, you could immediately recognise the thoughtful plating that went into the creation of this dish! Grilled to a perfect medium-well, the chops were flavourful, juicy and tender from the first bite. Delicious! Excusing ourselves from the dining area and heading over to the smoking area to unwind (and digest) from our magnificent afternoon lunch, Mezza House Bahrain also had a separate menu for the various hubbly bubbly on offer, alongside some pretty cool chill-out corners with their private televisions for your use during the downtime. Walking out feeling beyond satisfied, and our heads on just right, this was an afternoon that we could definitely see ourselves doing again sometime soon. ✤

once-in-a-lifetime trip began at the new stateof-the-art Bahrain International Airport. With an impressive space turned into a labyrinth of duty-free stores, dining choices and comfortable waiting areas, our trip began at the Gulf Air counter with a surprise upgrade to business class; a treat from the national carrier. With warm, welcoming smiles, Gulf Air staff swiftly finished our boarding process despite the many procedures related to Covid-19. After four-and-a-half hours of deluxe flying, we landed at Velana International Airport in Malé to meet Adam. He’s a kind and helpful young Maldivian who assisted us with our transfer. A short drive later, we arrived at the seaplane lounge, and waited to board the tiny plane with a hot cup of jasmine tea in hand. A summer rain shower passed by and we boarded the seaplane, which is not ideal for claustrophobic travellers – but is incredibly safe and comfortable. Forty minutes of ocean views and we were landing in the middle of the water. A floating platform was our next step, moving from plane to boat. As we disembarked on the jetty at Amilla Maldives Resort & Residence on Baa Atoll, we finally breathed in the beautiful air and ambience. We were greeted by the sound of local drums mixed with the crashing of waves and the smiles of hospitable faces. With no check-in required, Elena, our amazing butler, escorted us to our new temporary home. A spacious, newly renovated and luxurious over-water villa adorned in white and blue decor. Two bicycles were parked by the door. Inside we cast our eyes over a giant counter that held everything you need, from a coffee machine to a minibar. • TRAVEL your private infinity pool to the shallow sapphire water and the deeper azure ocean that looks as though it’s kissing the cloudy sky. There was an urge to jump right in, and everywhere we turned felt like a scene from a dream. Back inside, behind the bed, which was utterly comfortable, there was a big space with a dresser on one side and a wide floor-to-ceiling cabinet that can accommodate a whole family’s luggage. Two smooth white seats offered comfort while getting dressed. A bathtub sat at the far end, hidden away in the corner, with a rain shower ready to wash the sand away. A narrow path connected this side of the villa to the entrance. To the left side, a bathroom. To the right, another cabinet. You’ll want to take it all in and store it in your memory. Once you’ve done that, it’s easier to relax. We took a seat at the desk and listened to Elena while she explained our well-planned itinerary. First things first, two gentlemen from the clinic arrived to perform Covid-19 tests via swabs. We stayed in our room for an hour until the results were confirmed negative (and we didn’t mind the down time). With a confirmed negative result, we rushed out to EBC (Emperor Beach Club) Restaurant. Here, the delicious Sri-Lankan Chilli Crab satisfied our palates in a way that we feel we’ll never experience again. The halloumi brown rice salad was light and delicious, making lunch a success. The dining options at Amilla are widely diverse with a deep understanding and commitment to the concepts of sustainability and self-sufficiency. Amilla plans for more vegetables to be grown on the island soil for maximum freshness. The garden currently produces

basil and mint. Eggs also come from the resort’s chickens. All drinking water is purified in a special facility, and a special nonalcoholic Kombucha is prepared in the resort’s kitchen, using fruit leftovers and local herbs. The resort is also committed to the minimum use of plastic. Throughout our three-night stay, every meal was as satiating as its predecessor, if not better. For breakfast, a buffet offered a great range of bread and pastries, and yoghurt and jams that are prepared in house. There was fruit, porridge, cold cuts and cheese, and an extensive hot food offering (sausages and hash browns, pancakes, waffles and more). You can get made-toorder eggs and anything off the à la carte menu. We ordered our favourite Maldivian tuna dish, Massuni, which is canned tuna prepared with freshly ground coconut, chilli, onion, and lime juice… so, so good! If you wish to try the Instagram-worthy floating breakfast in the privacy of your pool, all you need to do is book it the day before. The Japanese restaurant, WOK (taste of Asia), was exceptional. Amazing octopus salad, sushi, and catch of the day fish fillet all passed the taste bud test, In the evening, you can chill out and enjoy a shisha if you wish, surrounded by beach vibes with your toes in the sand. Rainy days put a halt to our water activity plans, but unwinding by the pool was just perfect. Youngsters also have plenty of activities to choose from at the kids’ club. We tried recycled paper making at the Art Studio, which was fun! Entertainment was alive in the evenings. The resort organises culture-inspired shows as often as possible, and we had the pleasure of watching the talented fire show on our third night. Javvu Spa offered us a long-anticipated treatment, a 60-minute aromatherapy body massage. From a variety of essential oils, we chose coconut; it smelled divine and was deeply moisturising! We felt completely Zen afterwards. Visiting the Maldives was a dream come true, and Amilla Maldives Resort & Residences certainly made it the picturesque and memorable escape that you imagine. As far as safety, seclusion, and luxury goes – this is the destination where you’ll find it all. ✤

BIG SCREEN Arcane Need to Know:

Arcane is a 2021 animated series based on the League of Legends online multiplayer video game by Riot games. In it we follow two orphaned sisters as they navigate the treacherous and dangerous world they live in, as the series progresses more characters are introduced creating an intricate and exquisite story.

Creators: Christian Linke and Alex Yee Cast: Hailee Steinfeld, Ella Purnell, Katie Leung, Kevin Alejandro, Jason Spisak

Why Is It Worth Watching?

In this series we follow Vi (Hailee Steinfeld) and her sister Jinx (Ella Purnell) as they navigate the growing unrest between the utopian and rich upper city of Piltover and the poor undercity of Zaun. With different ideologies and views of the future, each character has a unique perspective, and we are shown the points of view of various characters throughout the show. This gives the audience a deep and unique insight into the root of this story and this world's various issues. The character development is also marvellous, from the well thought out designs to the complex personalities. Not to mention the absolute masterpiece that is the animation and art style of the show. From the incredible use of colour and form to the absolutely mesmerising backgrounds, you are truly immersed in the show as you watch the fluid and dazzling movements of each character. The soundtrack is also excellent, with each song truly encapsulating the intense moments and successfully making the audience feel the passionate emotions displayed on screen. It is the ultimate binge show, after starting it you’ll surely be unable to stop watching.

The Power of the Dog Need to Know:

Set in 1925, The Power of the Dog is a Western drama that follows a ranch owner, his brother and his new wife. And the cruelty and jealousy that festers due to repressed emotions and loneliness. This is a truly fascinating movie with complex themes and characters.

Creators: Jane Campion Cast: Benedict Cumberbatch, Jesse Plemons, Kirsten Dunst, Kodi Smit-McPhee

Why Is It Worth Watching?

The series follows Phil Burbank (Benedict Cumberbatch), a cruel and rough ranch owner, and his brother George Burbank (Jesse Plemons). After George’s marriage to widow Rose (Kirsten Dunst), Phil directs much of his aggression towards her and her awkward and stiff son, Peter (Kodi Smit-McPhee). This is not the easiest movie to watch, it is not as digestible and simple as many current movies. However, this is what makes it so incredible, you must read between the lines and the actions of each character to truly understand each person's intentions and thoughts. The eeriness and unsettling nature of the movie sets it up as a thriller without the classic parts of the genre. The incredible cinematography of vast empty land as well as awkward angles and silences are all perfectly placed to further the plot. This is a visually stunning movie as well as very interesting, as the audience tries to carefully complete the puzzle of the story. The perfect watch for deep thinkers who enjoy analysing deeper meanings in their films. It is most definitely worth a watch if not for deeper meanings, then certainly for the spectacular acting and visuals.

FOLK ROCK

ROCK COUNTRY

Brightside By The Lumineers

Barn By Neil Young & Crazy Horse

It’s hard to believe these guys have been going 17 years since founding members Wesley Schultz and Jeremiah Fraites began performing together in Ramsey, New Jersey, USA. They have a massive fanbase but, surprisingly, some people still haven’t heard of them. So, here’s a tip for you. Before you dig into Brightside, which is due for release on January 14, take a listen to 2012’s Ho Hey, it’s a track almost everyone will know, a real catchy tune that featured in the film Silver Linings Playbook. The title track of the new album, Brightside, starts with the question “What does love mean to you?” and there are certainly some cute answers. Wesley’s voice is beautiful and pure but despite the seemingly upbeat message, there is still a hint of hopeless melancholy borne out in lyrics such as: “You were tired of Tacoma, I was tired of believing we were right.” A standout is Birthday which is clearly a message for our current troubled times. It’s about carrying on and recognising that there are still people being kind to each other, still people wishing each other a Happy Birthday. And pandemic still in mind, of Big Shot Wesley told themusicuniverse.com that we’re all big shots in our own story and, now, we’ve all been humbled. The Lumineers, for all their popularity, remain humble indeed and true to their folky roots, though their music does seem to have taken a darker turn on both this and their last album III. But Brightside is definitely a grower the more you listen to it.

Announced in October 2021 and released in December, Barn is the follow-up to 2019’s Colorado and it distinctly illustrates the waning of the veteran rocker’s voice. That said, the choice of songs and the reliable backup from the skilled musicians of Crazy Horse, work well to both support and emphasis strengths. The opener, Song Of The Seasons, features the familiar harmonica gently leading into a beautifully lyrical tale of time passing and love as natural as nature “We’re so together in the way that we feel, that we could end up anywhere.” Elsewhere, Neil Young, ever the activist, takes some not some not so subtle digs at some of his fellow Americans. Change Ain’t Never Gonna calls out climate change deniers. Canerican is a short and sweet tale of changes coming to America “I am all colours, all colours is what I am, stand beside my brother for freedom in this land.” And Human Race is back to climate change “Where are all the children going to run and hide? The children of the fires and floods?” An apocalyptic siren call accompanied by screaming guitar. But there are also love songs and nostalgia aplenty. And overall, this album, is decidedly easy listening. Even with the political messages, it sounds like a group of old friends who know each other very, very well getting together to jam. And more power to them for that.

By Sarah Moss Sharply observed and bleakly comic, The Fell is a departure by Sarah Moss from Summerwater and Ghost Wall into a zone of relatedness and present times. She narrates the story of Kate, a woman in 2020 who slips out of her garden and turns up the hill, tired of pandemic gloom and breaking quarantine rules. Sarah explains beautifully how Kate cannot take it anymore. The story takes a turn when she falls and slips and what begins as a furtive walk of breathing air, turns into a mountain rescue operation. The novel is a story about kindness and compassion, what the place has become post Covid and what one must do to survive and live. This is a novel to be gulped in one sitting. The characters she chooses are easy to empathise with. Their small hardships can be a little overwhelming.

TRAVEL LITERATURE

The Greeks: A Global History

By Robert Beaton If you’re an avid ancient history fan, this is for you. The Emeritus Professor at King’s College London pens an extensive history of the Greeks from antiquity to present day. The book covers a lot of topics and territories with clarity, managing to focus on Greek identity throughout. He explains how the Greek language serves as a guardian for the accomplishments of Greek people. Robert mentions Greek philosophies and their lifestyle and draws a parallel between current times and the past. “In April 1821, for the first time in centuries, Greeks were ready to seize their political destiny and take their future in their own hands,” he writes as he expands on the Danubian principalities. He also touches on the reason men from all over Europe were drawn to fight for Greece. This is an interesting book to keep you engrossed with facts, figures and realities of the past in detail. fact magazine

LISTEN TO THE BIRDS Fawaz Al Shaikh – the artist known as Conference of Birds – tells Amal Sarhan about his songs and his process.

U

p-and-coming musical artist Fawaz Al Shaikh is setting the scene in Bahrain with his magical melodies and is gearing up for a return to the stage in the coming months. Under the name ‘Conference of Birds’, the Bahraini singer and piano player found the courage to showcase his talent last year with his first solo album and a live session covering three of his original tracks, both released in 2021. His album, also named Conference of Birds, has five tracks on it, namely Fly, Jasmine, Two Lost Boys on the Run, Wild Heart at Sea, and Dire Choir, the third of which is especially personal to the singer: “It has to do with a best friend that I once had. We parted ways a decade ago, and all I wanted to say in this song was “I miss him.” Dire Choir, the fifth song on the EP, is centred around togetherness – an extremely important theme to Fawaz – and was inspired by John Lennon and his campaign for peace and anti-war. Conference of Birds: The Live Session is his latest achievement. Released in November, it features a group performance with four instrumentalists and five vocalists, all of whom are close acquaintances. Fawaz found his love of music at the early age of seven, when he received an unexpected present from his parents. 78

“Do you know when parents randomly go to a toy store and buy you something quite out of the ordinary? One of those items for me was a tiny keyboard. I spent a lot of time playing that keyboard, without even knowing how to read music. “I gradually learned to play by ear, listening to songs on television and playing the melodies onto the keyboard, making many mistakes on the way, of course! That keyboard is the reason I have achieved the feats I have today. It was an accidental gift from my parents that helped me nurture my hidden passion for music.” Fawaz henceforth always made certain music played a part in his life, joining music clubs at school and university, and participating in national events. Prioritising his career, he graduated as an accountant and joined the audit banking industry at 22, with music still by his side. It was only when he turned 31 that he decided to pay some more attention to his passion, forming a band called BG Harmony with his best friend, Sameh, and starting to perform covers of their favourite tunes across the country. They also released two original tracks on YouTube and SoundCloud, namely Chapter One in 2018 and See You Soon in 2019. The duo are still going strong and have performed more than 100 gigs over the past seven years. Fawaz has also performed with local artist Ala Ghawas as

ARTS & CULTURE •

his pianist and back-up vocalist in Kuwait and Bahrain for his album Tryst. The artist argues that life does not need to work on a prescribed schedule and going at one’s own pace is better than going at anyone else’s. “I don’t regret starting at a late stage because I felt the time was right. I had to initially put my career first and music second until I felt mature enough artistically to advance my craft,” he says. When the pandemic struck and social isolation became the new normal, it gave Fawaz a chance to work on his music. He approached local sound engineer Abdulla Jamal, who owns SoundMan studio in Isa Town, and local musicians and artists to help him record his EP, which was released last February on streaming platforms and sold in local stores, such as Virgin Megastore. When asked how he would describe his music, Fawaz responds with: “One word: universal. I like to create songs that connect to all ages, ethnicities and other demographic categories.” “I love it when kids could listen to the same songs that grandparents would listen to. That, to me, is the beauty of music.” Fawaz’s stage name was inspired by The Conference of the Birds, a poem written in the 12th century by Persian poet and philosopher Attar of Nishapur. It inspired the global artist Chris Martin of Coldplay, who spoke about the poem and included its title in his song A Head Full of Dreams. “I actually heard the lyrics before hearing about the poem,” says Fawaz. “Conference of Birds doesn’t reflect me as a solo artist, but I intentionally chose this title because I knew I wasn’t going to be able to complete my album without a little help from my friends and the support of my family.” He is especially thankful for his wife, Fatema, whom he calls his biggest supporter. A visual artist herself, she continually encourages Fawaz to reach for new heights. She also created the artwork for his debut EP, a silhouette of Fawaz himself, with the Virgo constellation enclosed in the shadow and a flutter of nine birds emerging above (representing the month of Fawaz’s birthday, September). Recalling his friend Sameh, he describes their friendship and the inspiration he has been to him through the years: “Sameh is my backbone, my music partner, and my lifelong friend.” Some artists search for songs and ideas but, for Fawaz, the opposite is true. He says: “Most songs just come to me. There are constant melodies and words running through my mind, and when something catches my attention, I pull out my phone and start humming the melody or writing down the words. “Sometimes, when I create a song, I end up finding the song requiring more from me. Once a song is initially created, it has a heartbeat, it breathes, and you have to cherish it and take good care of it.”

Lyrics are the biggest challenge to the singer, who struggles with transforming ideas and feelings into concrete words. Nevertheless, these obstacles only motivate him more, for “what are achievements without barriers? “Once the songs start materialising at my home studio where I record them as demos, I share them with other artists and ask for their feedback from a production point of view,” says the singer. “After several rehearsals and sessions at the piano, a demo is finalised and I can then head to the studio, where I work with the producer to create the final piece.” Fawaz believes that: “Bahrain is a country rich with talented artists of all kinds: poets, songwriters, DJs and others. Nobody can deny that.” When asked about advice he would give to upcoming artists on the island, he replies: “Don’t ignore your passion – work on it, create something that will live forever. When you do, remember to add discipline, commitment and hard work into it. Art requires that.” Future plans for Fawaz include live performances of his tracks as well as a new album, but with all these goals in mind, his primary hope is to 'bring joy to people.' “When I hear that people have enjoyed listening to my songs, I can’t ask for more,” he says. “In the end, I’m just a guy who loves to sit in front of a piano and a microphone.” ✤

Often copied, better than ever! JJ’s Irish Restaurant is possibly the most iconic place of its kind on our fair island. Born in Ireland in 1999, the décor package was made to order, deconstructed, shipped across the seas and reassembled in Bahrain, piece by piece. That’s how much care and attention to detail that went into this now legendary haunt. Unlike many F&B establishments in Bahrain, JJ’s has survived the ebbs and flows of market changes and evolved through the years, always remaining relevant, classic and yet ground breaking in its offerings. 22 years rolled by and JJ’s remained faithful to its reputation for outstanding service, great food, a generous variety of beverages and an industry leading entertainment program. So, what’s the big news? Well, change is inevitable and comes in all shapes and sizes. In the case of JJ’s, it’s a new move to an even greater purpose-built venue, a stone’s throw from the current location to 338 in Adliya. “We studied our options and felt that we needed a new push, a new evolution,” explained Akram Miknas, Chairman of Promoseven Holdings, the mother company of the restaurant. He added that, “I could see the benefits of being in 338 but at the same time I didn’t want the classic styling and character of JJ’s to be compromised. My son and partner Karim stepped into the picture and convinced me of a new way forward that incorporates all that is JJ’s as we know it today plus a whole lot more. The plan is to eventually create a franchise out of this iconic Bahraini brand, born in Ireland but very much evolved here and to take it even further.” We asked Karim to elaborate further and he explained that, “The team behind the big move are working tirelessly to ensure we get everything right. We’ve analyzed all our weaknesses in the current location and have done our best to address each and every aspect. So, you can expect a much-improved JJ’s for sure. We also incorporated many technological improvements into the new location as well as state of the art sound, lights, video; all of the elements and tools that will allow us to present a better version of who we are. We’re looking forward to welcoming our loyal regulars as well as new guests we hope to surprise and excite with this amazing place. I think the temporary revision of our age-old tag-line ‘Often Copied, Never Bettered’, says it all, we’re really Better Than Ever!” JJ’s Irish Restaurant will close on January 1st in its current location and reopen in the new Adliya 338 location in February 2022. What We’re (Still) Talking About Farewell to ‘The Arch’

Climate Crisis

RIP Eko

Last month saw the passing of a vital social activist and emblem of freedom in South Africa. Archbishop Desmond Tutu, hailed as a national hero, relentlessly fought for human rights in a tumultuous era both in the southern state and internationally. He helped repeal apartheid and was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1984 for his efforts to achieve restorative justice for the black community. The much-loved cleric, known affectionately as The Arch, was diagnosed with prostate cancer in the 1990s but never lost his smile and

Typhoon Rai has been marked as one of the most fatal natural disasters seen in the past year, but is it really all that natural? Many experts blame the climate crisis for the catastrophe and see it as a sign of a turning tide. With the continuing discussions on the climate, from COP26 and the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) reports on irreversible damage, deteriorating habitats, evaporating lakes and melting glaciers, this typhoon comes at the pinnacle of a year of disaster after disaster, sign after sign that governments and politicians are falling behind.

In the last week or so an endangered Malayan tiger named Eko died at Naples Zoo, Florida. At just eight, he was not old. Nor was he sick. No, he died of stupidity. That of a man who worked for a cleaning company, and should not have been anywhere near the tiger, who stuck his arm through the bars allowing Eko to grab him. Eko was shot dead. The man is in a critical condition but his victim, and, yes, we use that term advisedly, is dead! Sadly, this sort of event is becoming more frequent. In 2016, gorilla Harambe was killed after a child fell into his

infectious sense of fun. South Africa held a week of commemorative events to celebrate his life with joy, colour, music and reflection. For us, his passing feels like almost the end of an era personified by Archbishop Tutu, Nelson Mandela and their ilk. We can’t help but wonder what they would make of the confused and often embattled nation South Africa has become.

Despite all this, there is still much corruption and under-the-table deals that disregard the negative effects they might have on global warming. It feels as though despite all the international debates and cries for substantial action, we are still stuck with unchanged habits and a lack of care. Our only hope is that disasters like Typhoon Rai and many others in 2021 might ignite 2022 as a year of the much-needed turnaround to get ahead of the climate crisis.

enclosure. The primate seemed to be protecting the toddler, but he was shot anyway. And in March 2021 a man was arrested after sneaking his two-yearold into the elephant enclosure at San Diego Zoo just managing to escape as a giant beast charged at them. The ethics of zoos aside, when will people realise these are wild and, potentially, dangerous animals and leave their stupidity at the gate?!
