THE EDITOR
Ramadan Kareem “Fasting of the Body is Food for the Soul.”
I
t always knocks me off guard how fast life goes by in the publishing industry – you live from issue to issue and the entire year is broken up into seasonal occasions and regional events. So, when it’s time to do the Ramadan editorial, I’m equally excited (for the spiritual and homely vibes) and anxious (because time is flying by), and because there are just TOO many amazing Iftar and Ghabga set-ups to experience. In Bahrain, we’re lucky that we get a genuine insight into Ramadan celebrations through so many beautiful offerings all around town. Check out what’s in store for 2017 starting p23. All your favourite 5-star hotels and venues are transforming to bring you something extra special for the Holy Month. Whether you’re fasting or just joining in, we’ve also got all the do’s and don’ts, health tips, and majlis and gift guides to help you prep ahead. If you picked up this issue because of the stunning artwork on the cover then you need to rush to p51 and read all about the talented lady who created it. We found Zahraa Al-Saffar on instagram and thought it was time for her to share the abundance of creativity she harbours with our readers, and what better way to do that than on the front cover?! In line with exploring all things cultural, the FACT team went on a trip to the Moroccan city of Casablanca, where a mix of modern and traditional brings the Atlantic oceanfront destination alive. Read all about our globetrotting escape starting p60. If you haven’t already, go and check out the modern Greek eatery that is Helios and have a read of our exquisite Chef ’s Table for an insight on what to expect (p99). If you’re a meat-lover, Crowne Plaza Bahrain’s new Steak Night is sure to please (p103) whilst two of our favourite dining hotspots called us over to taste some of their upcoming foodie offerings - Hévéa Café (p106) and Cavalli Caffè (p108) - there’s something for everyone to enjoy! Until Ramadan starts, you’ve got plenty of time to enjoy every daydining and events – highlights of which you’ll find throughout the magazine along with new fashion, tech, motoring, home style and more. Wishing you all a fabulous month ahead!☺

Asian Curries and More! MEISEI HAS ANOTHER IMPRESSIVE SEASONAL MENU TO TANTALISE YOUR TASTE BUDS INTO THE SUMMER MONTHS…
Chef Michael ’s new seasonal menu - Asian Curries and More is Meisei’s take on classics inspired by flavours from Japan, Korea and Thailand with spices from the Orient. Created to suit every palate, from the seasoned spice lover to the conventional food connoisseur, you’re going to be left with too many new favourite dishes to come back for. Start with the simple and delicious Japanese Pakora – julienned vegetable tempura, cucumber kimchee yogurt raita. A creative take on India’s popular appetiser – the pakora – this dish will set the tone for what’s to come. The raita as Chef Michael explains is influenced by the Korean flavours of Kimchee – a traditional banchan (side dish) made from salted and fermented vegetables with a variety of seasonings. It makes for the perfect dip with the crispy tempura. Kalbi Ribs are up next; beautifully-glazed soy ginger beef short rib marinate, golden curry sauce. Think juicy fall-offthe-bone meat. This is the kind of dish you have to dig into with your hands – SO good. We move onto the main show and first up is the Japanese Golden Vegetarian Curry with Korean Somen Noodles – an excellent, flavourful option for any non meat-eaters at the table. For us, there were two huge standouts; the Crispy 8
fact magazine
Chicken Katsu, made up of crisp, fried free-range chicken, vegetable black fried rice, Japanese curry. Firstly, we’ve never seen or tasted anything like it – the textures are on point – it’s light, crunchy, chewy and sizzling with flavour – by far the best dish to come to the table. The addition of black rice is a welcomed change from the usual servings of plain white rice. The second mind-blowing choice was the Crispy Panko Crusted Sea Bass Curry with roasted vegetable, dill cumin marinate. Not only is the portion generous to share, we’ve never tasted Sea Bass so perfectly coated in herbs and spices and still keep its fresh bite – seafood lovers, you’ll rejoice. There’s a Green Thai Miso Cashew Chicken Curry with steamed basmati edamame rice and grilled lime as well as a Red Spicy Thai Coconut Tiger Prawn Curry; and Red Spicy Thai Coconut Schezwan Beef Curry, both served with steamed black rice and grilled lime – simply exquisite. Meisei continues to wow on the dining scene with its pure and wholesome approach to cooking – the Asian Curries and More menu is tasty proof of that. ✤ GO: Visit Meisei in Adliya. Transcend Modern Road Art Show will present its first exhibition with work by international artist Taline Temizian at La Fontaine Centre of Contemporary Art. A curated art show featuring series of new and recent works as well as the unique The Cardiac works by London based artist Taline Temizian will open at La Fontaine on May 2. In this show, 52 works will be presented that range from paper, multi-media pieces and sculpture to projection and canvases, all of which talk about the transcendental state of the heart and it’s relationship to the brain in a complex world of stories and networks – hence endless possibilities and consequences that surround us. Rethinking these boundaries and possibilities to expand the horizon into new, hopeful and happier realities. Showcasing The Cardiac series – Stage 1, this body of work is made up of conceptual pieces and more minimalist post-conceptual works that draw inspiration from a long autobiographical journey that tells the story of the Middle East from the artist’s looking glass, immigrating these stories and imagery to the West and to a New World. The pieces examine Memory in the New World Order through a super-connected planet and networks but lonelier and more somber. Taline explains: “The Cardiac theme (the anatomical heart) has travelled years through my artistic experimentations and entered a rather algorithmic terrain, a new network and a new universe with unpredictable set of processes and systems, autobiographic and academic inputs and numerous destinations with happier and darker tones simultaneously, celebrating and embracing a Transhumanist future that comprises of science, nature and technology – having love on top of this agenda!” The show aims to take the viewer on a journey that transcends the daily perception into the deeper levels of the brain, soul and imagination, explaining reality from a completely new perspective, offering new insights and therefore new possibilities. ✤ GO: Visit www.modernroad.com for more information. 12

Golfers can double their points for scores better than a net birdie, when going for the PowerPlay flag. The entry fee for each competition is BD3 for Club members and BD23 for non-members, inclusive of green fee. GO: Call 1775 0777 for reservations and more information.

RAMADAN 101
RAMADAN DO’S AND DON’TS A LITTLE FRIENDLY ADVICE FOR THE HOLY MONTH AHEAD…
DO
DON’T
DRESS APPROPRIATELY
SHOW AFFECTION IN PUBLIC
Both men and women should dress modestly. Avoid going to public places in shorts, mini skirts, sleeveless tops and anything that displays too much skin - cover shoulders and upper arms, keep the neckline decent and make sure dresses are down to the knee. Loose-fitted garms are best to avoid offence (but also for the heat!).
The Holy Month is a period of humility, respect and restraint; therefore it’s best to avoid demonstrating any kind of affection (kissing and hugging your partner) in public, because it will be considered offensive.
GET INTO THE CAHRITABLE SPIRIT
Between sunrise and sunset, refrain from eating, drinking and smoking in malls, hotels, and outside in the open. Although fasting is only compulsory for Muslims, foreigners and non-Muslims should respect this rule, at least in public, as a sign of respect. Remember you could be penalised if caught!
An important element of the Holy Month is to be generous and give back to those less fortunate. Whether it’s by donating food, clothes or money to individuals or organisations, there’s plenty of ways for you to get involved.
EAT, DRINK, SMOKE OR CHEW GUM IN PUBLIC
EXPERIENCE TRADITION & CULTURE
PLAY LOUD MUSIC
Check out all the Iftars and Sohours around town and soak up the spiritual culture and traditions of this beautiful month. The fabulous atmosphere of Ramadan tents and buffets is not to be missed, or even have a go at holding your own majlis.
Ramadan is a time for prayer, peace and spiritual reflection so make sure you’re not disrupting neighbours and/or other cars on the road, and people on the street by blasting loud music at home or in the car. As log as it’s not audible to others, it should be fine – but respect the peace.
GREET & ACCEPT INVITATIONS Wish your fellow colleagues, friends and Muslim community, who are celebrating the Holy Month with “Ramadan Kareem” and do go along to break fast when you’re invited – it shows a willingness to be a part of something important to them. Don’t go empty handed – flowers, Arabic desserts, dates or oud is a great gift for your host.
BE PATIENT & CONSIDERATE Going without food and water for 12 hours (or more) straight is a physically and mentally challenging task. Many people’s sleeping habits are also affected – so try to be sympathetic and understanding of those who are observing fast. 36
fact magazine
DRIVE AT SUNSET If you need to be out on the roads close to sunset then take extra caution. As the fast comes to a close, the roads fill with people heading to Iftar celebrations. They haven’t eaten, or had a drink for 12 or more hours and may get a little hasty behind the wheel. To be safe, wait an hour or so until after Iftar. ✤

RAMADAN 101
RAM ADAN: TOP HEALTH TIPS FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO WILL BE FASTING IN RAMADAN AND ANY ONE WHO WISHES TO JOIN IN AND EXPERIENCE THE HOLY MONTH, IT’S IMPORTANT TO MAINTAIN HEALTHY, NUTRITIOUS EATING HABITS ALONGSIDE FITNESS TO KEEP THE FATIGUE AWAY AND YOUR ENERGY LEVELS HIGH.
- NEVER SKIP SOHOUR Just as breakfast is the most important meal of the day, Suhour (the meal eaten before dawn) is equally important during Ramadan. The pre-dawn meal helps your body stay hydrated and fuelled up on energy and nutrients until your next meal at Iftar. It also helps you avoid overeating when you break your fast at sunset.
- CUT DOWN ON SUGAR AND PROCESSED FOODS Avoid heavily processed, fast-burning foods that contain refined carbohydrates such as sugar and white flour, as well as fatty foods like Ramadan desserts. They are high in fat and low in nutrients and will slow your energy levels whilst making you feel hungry quicker and more tired throughout the day.
- DON’T OVER INDULGE While it’s tempting to gorge at Iftar after a day of food deprivation, remember that you should slow things down. Start with a few dates and water and then wait before starting your main meal. Dates are a great source of energy, helping the body to produce digestive enzymes in preparation for the upcoming meal. Begin with warm soup and avoid heavy oils and fats in your meal. Make sure you consume plenty of vegetables and a good portion of protein and enough carbs, with a little fat. Remember to eat slowly and give time for your body to digest the food.
- STAY HYDRATED Probably the most important and simplest tip – yet one that many people forget to keep up in Ramadan. Drink at least eight to 12 cups of water between sunset and sunrise and add vitamin fluids for hydration from the period of Iftar to the time of Suhour. 38
fact magazine
Beware of consuming a lot of popular sugary Ramadan drinks such as Tamarind and Vimto. Juices, milk and soup are sources of fluids, but water is the best choice.
- AVOID CAFFEINE AND DEEP FRYING A big no go for Ramadan is caffeine which stimulates faster water loss, leading to dehydration. It is best to avoid caffeinated drinks such as strong tea, coffee and some fizzy drinks, or consume them in moderation. Try to avoid fried foods or those prepared with large quantities of oil – they make you bloated and thirsty. If frying cannot be avoided, one tip would be to reduce the quantity of oil used.
- WORK OUT AFTER IFTAR To avoid dehydration, it’s best to postpone working out until after fasting hours. Allow at least two to three hours after eating to begin your exercise routine, to give your body enough time to digest properly. Maintain hydration throughout your workout and don’t forget to drink plenty of water afterwards to replenish mineral losses due to sweating.
- GET INTO A ROUTINE One of the best ways to make fasting an enjoyable, cleansing and spiritual experience is to be disciplined in your routine – prep fruit and veg for smoothies and salads beforehand, get your required hours of sleep and recognise how much your body can handle when it comes to food and exercise. Most importantly – STICK WITH IT. ✤
WHAT TO EAT? At Suhour, go for protein-rich, high-fibre and complex carbs! Oats, wheat, lentils, grains and other complex carbohydrates (like fava beans) are slowreleasing carbs, helping keep your blood sugar steady and giving you a feeling of fullness for a longer part of the day. It’s likely that you’ll feel less of a need to binge when it comes to Iftar as well. Fibre-rich foods are digested slowly and include cereals, dates, figs, bran, whole wheat, grains, seeds, potatoes, vegetables and almost all fruit especially apricots and prunes. Bananas are a good source of potassium and other essential nutrients that help keep your body hydrated, so try and incorporate one into your morning smoothie or fresh juice with berries or almonds – get creative and enjoy! High protein foods like eggs, cheese, yoghurt or meat are also recommended as they can help replenish your energy throughout the day. Though, avoid things like sandwiches which have a higher proportion of bread, which makes you feel thirstier and sluggish throughout the day.

HOW TO: MAJLIS GOALS THERE’S NO BETTER WAY TO GET INTO THE SPIRIT OF RAMADAN THAN HAVING YOUR FAMILY, FRIENDS OR COLLEAGUES OVER FOR A LOVELY EVENING GATHERING. ONE OF THE BEST WAYS TO ENTERTAIN YOUR GUESTS THROUGHOUT THE HOLY MONTH IS TO CREATE A MAJLIS AT YOUR HOME. FACT HAS A FEW TIPS TO GET YOU STARTED...
WHAT IS A MAJLIS? A comfortable seating area in a local family’s home created especially for important occasions and frequent gatherings to receive visitors, mainly relatives and friends, but also colleagues and other respected members of the community. It’s not usually a permanent fixture in the house, but instead an area allocated for the purpose, and then furnished and decorated suitably. During the cooler months, a large tent or temporary atrium can be built for use, but in the summer heat, Majlis get-togethers are kept indoors. It is also, often, used as a recreation and relaxation area with male and female Majlis set-ups being kept separate.
tea blends – it’s all about being unique and memorable. A sure winner is serving some authentic Moroccan tea in ornate teapots. And, from what we’ve heard, the drink Vimto plays a big part – if you’ve got Vimto on tap all evening, then you’re really celebrating Ramadan! Or how about setting up your own shisha at home? This will surely impress your guests!
HOSPITALITY A very strong aspect of Arabian culture is hospitality, and this is especially relevant in a Majlis. You will be expected to serve traditional tea, coffee, and delicious desserts when you receive guests, and many families use this as an opportunity to demonstrate their hosting prowess! Of course, you can change it up and put your own personal spin on it – like organic sweet treats or beautiful 40
fact magazine
It’s important to set the mood and ambience with all the little touches expected at a Majlis. It can be as simple as having some candles with calligraphy, decorating your shelves with ceramic plates and cups, or even dotting the area with handcrafted ornaments like Arabian- style lamps and lanterns or mosaic- decorated show pieces. Incense is key to getting the aroma of the setting right. Oud is the most popular and can really help to create an oriental atmosphere.
TASTY TREATS
FIND A SPACE A Majlis doesn’t have to take up a whole room. A corner of a large living room or the empty space in an entrance hall will do. You can either buy yourself some of the comfortable patterned Arabic couches or take existing furniture you already have and decorate it with accessories and cushions to give it that Arabian feel. Floor cushions are also a very popular and traditional alternative, and make for very relaxed seating. Check out the homewares section on www.littlemajlis. com for everything from soft furnishings, to tea towels, quirky accessories, lighting and so much more.
ACCESSORIES
CULTURAL ACTIVITIES If the gathering is one with close family and friends, why not take it in turns to tell some fables and stories? Put a modern-day twist on the pastimes at your Majlis with a good supply of fun board games. Everything from Monopoly to Guess Who? and Operation! Go old-school and get everyone involved for a game of Dawama (spinners!) or Kairam (wooden game board with four corner pockets), the options are plenty. A deck of cards to hand is always good to keep boredom at bay.
Tajines are Moroccan cooking implements that are already popular as household ornaments around the world. Colourful and pretty to look at, they make great decorations for tables and unused corner arrangements. However, they can be functional too – fill them with different sweets and arrange them artfully around your Majlis. Serve up a good variety of traditional desserts like basbousa, kunafa, baklava, maamool, halva, luqaimat, and dates with various fillings, and even a mix of nuts. Try your hand at makig Umm Ali, a favourite in Ramadan, and serve it in separate bowls or pots, like desserts at a buffet. This way, guests can pick and choose what they like. Savoury food options can also be served.
GET CREATIVE If you’ve got a big space and a group of friends with different talents – why not hold an Arabian pop-up market at your Majlis? Ask them to bring a few of their products and arrange an area to have these on display for others to discover and potentially buy. You can also make little Suhour or Iftar kits in little ornate treasure chest boxes with a mix of one small sample product from each person to make a nice gift for favours on the way out. ✤

Strength of a Woman
While disease is certainly no funny business, Jennifer Wright manages to fuse humor and history together to understand various outbreaks and their impact. Reading a book on plagues may not sound ideal, but Wright’s humorous take on the gruesome subject matter certainly makes it intriguing and informative. Wright uses pithy comments and commentary to talk about the outbreaks, their cures and how they were handled at the time. The writing style is amusing, light-hearted and scathing and is presented as a fascinating monologue. Who knew reading about plagues could be fun?
By Mary J Blige
Mary J Blige is back and she’s not here to play! The Grammy-winning singer is making a comeback with her latest album, Strength of a Woman and she’s holding nothing back. The soundtrack is personal and especially close to the songstress’s heart as this is her first fulllength album since her heartbreaking divorce. Love Yourself featuring Yeezy, is a song all about self love, an open canvas of mellow piano keys and a brass heavy beat. Blige’s exquisite vocals powers are as obvious as ever on this nostalgia-inducing ballad. Thick of It, a beautiful rendition of Blige’s devastation is backed by cascading wind chimes, drums and an ethereal choir- a return to form for the queen of hip-hop soul. Feeling lovesick? U+Me is the therapeutic anthem you need! The sultry breakup ballad is a stunning slow jam- reminiscent of the signature Mary J Blige sound. Featuring raw and honest lyrics, the album is certainly Blige’s most powerful work yet and we just can’t get enough. All hail queen MJB!

“WITH THE EXCEPTION OF A FEW OF MY P I E C E S, I L I K E TO THINK THAT MOST OF MY WORK HAS EMOTIONAL UNDERTONES”
Z
ahraa Al-Saffar’s love of art was first ignited on a trip to Barcelona. Like many who visit the stunning Spanish city, she was in awe of the incredible architectural works by Gaudi. So much so that his infamous Sagrada Familia went on to inspire Zahraa’s theme for a practice GCSE Art Project. “I chose Catalan Modernism and painted the Sagrada Familila whilst also incorporating the use of mosaics,” she recalls. “I definitely wouldn’t say it was a masterpiece. But, being given the freedom to run with my own ideas and not follow any rules was a game changer for me and that’s when I really grew to love creating art.” It’s in that very sentiment that Zahraa’s interest and passion for producing art comes alive. She’s captivated by Arabic and Islamic art – Iraqi in particular. “I love the strong use of colour, the intrinsic patterns and the use of characters to tell a story,” Zahraa explains. “I take a lot of inspiration from Iraqi Artists like Muayad Muhsin and Wassma Al-Agha.” From the sounds of things, you might be deceived into believing that Zahraa is a full-fledged, round-theclock artist – this is not the case. When we discovered her work through our favourite way of searching for hidden local talents – instagram hashtags (of course!), Zahraa humbly admitted that she’s always looked at art as a personal love and hobby – as something alongside her day job that gives her fulfillment as a creative outlet. She also hadn’t shared a lot of her pieces on social media - just with family and friends. In fact, when we (very quickly) decided to feature 52

Zahraa as the arts interview for our annual Ramadan issue, we learned that this talented lady is still spotlight shy when it comes to showcasing a lot of her work. Well, let’s crack that shell! For someone viewing Zahraa’s work for the first time, you’ll see that her pieces embody contemporary visuals, lots of colour and are open for interpretation. “With the exception of a few of my pieces, I like to think that most of my work has emotional undertones,” Zahraa shares. “I love painting characters with their eyes closed and letting the viewer decide the feeling themselves. Are her eyes closed because she’s sad? Thoughtful? In love? You choose. “I’ve had my friends look at my work and argue between themselves on how the characters in my paintings are feeling. My answer is always the same – it’s subjective,” she adds.

Many artists, both in a professional capacity and those who paint for fun or as a pastime, may refer to cultural references or at least a specific idea, person, tradition – anything – as their muse. We’re intrigued to learn about the different social influences in Zahraa’s work. She tells us: “My work is full of Middle Eastern cultural elements. From the ladies draped in the traditional abaya from head to toe, to the jewellery and use of colour – a lot of my friends joke about the the “voluptuous female form” and I incorporate this into a lot of my pieces – again, that all goes back to how a fuller figure is celebrated in the Arabic culture. I also paint a lot of palm trees, dates, and domes, and love to experiment with calligraphy,” she smiles Zahraa paints with acrylics because she loves the thick, textured brush strokes on a canvas. A lot of the time, she takes it further and thickens the paint with a medium, something that will allow her audience to really see and feel the texture of the paint. In terms of tools, aside from bushes, she also uses sponge, paint knives and what she calls the “most magical tool” – her fingers. “There are so many different ways you can use your hands to blend, smudge

and create interesting patterns and I love experimenting with my fingers,” she says. “I’d say most of my paintings have involved an element of finger work. Even my charcoal and pencil pieces heavily rely on blending using my hands to get the effect of shadows and shades.” Zahraa instinctively gravitates towards brighter colours, and when she’s looking
for inspiration, she finds herself searching for Arabic and Islamic history and traditions. “With everything that’s going on in the world today, I like to think that my work brings a sense of positivity and optimism by combining the two,” she says. Living in Dubai, Zahraa is surrounded by a wealth of artistic knowledge, talent and events. She believes the UAE is definitely a place with great opportunities for the creative community. “It seems like there’s an art event or festival every week - I love it,” she exclaims. “There are so many opportunities here for artists and I definitely think the UAE is championing artistic talents in a huge way at the moment. In addition to the galleries and artistic hubs like DIFC and Al Serkal Avenue, there are countless cafés, hotels and restaurants that allow artists to showcase their pieces and I love how budding artists’ works are increasingly being used to shape the décor for all these wonderful venues,” Zahraa says. “In my opinion, there’s no better way to decorate.” Probably one of the most challenging things to encounter as an artist is knowing when to stop, when to put down the brush or the pencil and say “it’s done” – what’s this process like for Zahraa? fact magazine

“That’s a tough one,” she admits. “A while ago I finished one of my pieces, hung it up on the wall and then six months later I took it down and added a few elements to it before hanging it back up. I think it’s done now, but ask me again in six months – you never know! “When I get immersed in a project, I’ll often dream of the brush strokes and colours I’m using then wake up with a new idea or direction to take the piece,” Zahraa explains. “I always give myself that window for a few months at least before I officially declare a piece as ready to add to my website.” The ultimate dream for Zahraa is for her art to become such a priority where she could leave her day job and unleash the creativity full time. Her most important piece of advice for young budding artists is “consistence is key” – even if you only paint for your own pleasure, Zahraa encourages you to keep at it as that’s how you improve. She says: “Go to art galleries, get inspired, get out of your comfort zone and don’t be hard on yourself – the beauty of art is that there are no rules.” On that note, look out for the name Zahraa Al-Saffar at an exhibition near you. ✤ GO: Follow Zahraa Al-Saffar on instagram @zahraadxb for more information.

elipe Urteaga’s early childhood was spent living in Bahrain – he left at the age of five and moved back to Peru with his family. But, his love for painting started much earlier. “My mum tells me that I started when I was around two-years-old and I haven’t stopped since,” he tells us. “I was writing on the walls, her friend’s couches, getting in trouble. I would just take my colouring books everywhere I went, so I don’t remember when I actually started,” he smiles. “To me, I’ve just always been drawing.” Felipe’s talent led to the creation of Sickindividual – his brand new t-shirt collection donning unbelievably cool images of everyone from Tupac Shakur to Muhammed Ali, John Lennon, Albert Einstein and many more iconic figures. “It all started when I was in Los Angeles, and I was listening to Natural Mystic by Bob Marley,” Felipe recalls. “I was thinking ‘this is so good, I’m going to draw Bob Marley’ and I just started drawing him and I thought – I’m going to do something different – instead of his dreadlocks I drew trees, instead of a beard I made it marijuana plants – and I realised, ‘this is really cool’,” he says. In the following days, a documentary inspired Felipe to draw Mahatma Gandhi in the same style as he did the Bob Marley portrait, these along with another earlier drawing of Bob Dylan were kept in his room, until his roommate at the time saw them and said “dude, you should put those on t-shirts” and that’s when the whole idea for Sickindividual came about. The brand is available exclusively at Shoeciti at City Centre Bahrain where customers can take their pick from an array of posters and t-shirts. Each piece of Sickindividual art is painstakingly created after thorough research to effectively capture personalities, lifestyles and ideologies of some of the most prolific icons of our time; translating their legacies into one-of-akind, colourful and intricate designs. The Sickindividual line caters to all personalities and interests – the hardest part is choosing just one! There’s something we notice immediately - Felipe isn’t the type of artist to sit in one place and draw a bowl of fruit. Alongside Sickindividual, he’s also produced some EPIC works of art, depicting different messages of historical and modern-day events, cultures and society itself. After all, he did graduate with honours in Animation from the School of Visual Arts, New York and went onto work for prestigious animation studios in Hollywood, quickly moving up the ladder as a Storyboard Artist. Felipe’s ultimate goal with Sickindividual is for it to keep expanding and become available, globally. “I want to rock into a mall and see people wearing my t-shirt,” he laughs. “And I would just love to keep painting.” With a high demand for cool art and clothing like Sickindividual, the only way is UP! ✤ GO: Shop Sickindividual at Shoeciti, City Centre Bahrain. he Four Seasons Hotel Casablanca will have you saying “wow” at every turn. On approach to the 5-star property, you’ll pass by the calm of the greenery, through streets that easily resemble any Hollywood neighbourhood in Beverly Hills, and miles of beautiful shoreline, before arriving at the sand-coloured building. If it’s fresh air and sea views galore that you’re after, this place will please down to a tee (and offer you the opportunity to post a thousand different insta and snapchat shots – yay!). At only five-storeys-high, the Four Seasons Hotel Casablanca is an intimate hotel made up of 186 super spacious rooms, including 29 suites which come with private balconies overlooking the deep blue ocean or the lush gardens. Three restaurants, a picturesque outdoor pool and a fabulous spa all add to the allure of this beachfront hotel. French, Arabic and English are just three of the main languages spoken by the multinational team here. Every one from the doorman to the bellboy, the front desk staff and the waiters are polite, efficient and beyond welcoming. To top that off, we’re served a delicious plate of traditional Moroccan sweet treats along with a cup of the famous Moroccan mint tea upon check-in. Talk about a “sense of local” – you’ll get a mix of authenticity from local customs as well as a hint of modernity with the stylish décor and luxury setting – the best of both worlds. BREEZY LIVING Our Superior Room is located on the top floor, just down the hall from the lobby. Not only is this super convenient, it’s also a pleasant surprise to find how peaceful it is just a few minutes from the chic entrance. Again, if you want lively, it’s just seconds away from the room, and when you want to relax, rest assured that this room is a quiet sanctuary. One of the reasons why we love the Four Seasons brand SO much is because each property stays true to its roots – that’s no exception in Casablanca. The room we’ll call home for the next few days is BIG. It’s beautifully-bright with cool, neutral interiors that boast elements 64

of both Moroccan design and contemporary flair. Tailormade lamps inspired by the typical brass work found in Moroccan moucharabieh and Berber tradition come together to create the most spacious and luxurious guest rooms, complete with floor-to-ceiling windows that let in an abundance of natural light. Soft beige marble floors cover the room, providing excellent contrast with the dark brown timber and colourful décor. There’s mesmerising art on the walls, a fully-stocked refrigerated personal bar with delicious teas, a nespresso machine, and a variety of snacks and beverages, alongside the best part of the accommodation – the customisable Four Seasons bed, with your choice of mattress topper – hello, Signature Plush! The bathroom is an impressive set-up too. Adorned in marble with a deep soaking tub and glass-walled shower, an excellent make up mirror and thick terry bathrobes, it’s a one-stop hotspot for ultimate rest. RECOMMENDED EXPERIENCE: TASTE OF PLACE Many of you will know Casablanca from the 1942 film with the same moniker. Starring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman, the film Casablanca has become a cinematic classic, though many viewers are unaware that it was shot entirely in Los Angeles. You can get up close and personal with the film’s other big star; Rick’s Café, where much of the action took place. While the original café sat on a Hollywood soundstage, a duplicate Rick’s Café was opened on the edge of Casablanca’s Old Medina in 2004. Faithfully modelled after its celluloid twin, Rick’s is a combination bar, lounge, jazz club and restaurant known for its stellar Negroni cocktails, Sunday jam sessions and resident piano player, who plays out the film’s theme song, As Time Goes By. When staying at the Four Seasons Hotel Casablanca, you can take advantage of a truly one-of-a-kind experience. Relive the romance of the iconic-motion picture, exclusively with the Taste of Place evening. Bask in the surroundings of the legendary Rick’s Café, designed after the bar that was made famous in the film, with an exceptional four-course dinner and live entertainment. Head to the restaurant in one of the Hotel’s luxury cars, where you’ll be greeted upon arrival by Rick’s Café owner Kathy Kriger. With bubbly in hand, Kathy will lead a private restaurant tour while sharing the incredible story behind the film that inspired it. Enjoy a delicious four-course dinner that has been specially orchestrated through a collaboration with the chefs at Four Seasons Hotel Casablanca and Rick’s Café. The Moroccan-inspired dinner will feature local ingredients paired with carefully selected vino. Enjoy jazz tunes throughout the evening, played by the restaurant’s resident pianist. During our visit, the restaurant was a lively affair. Packed with diners enjoying plates of homely cooking alongside the finest drinks and entertainment. Kathy is an absolute joy; she takes us through her journey of how the idea for Rick’s Café came to her, and the process that followed to make it come alive. The food is nothing short of exquisite – especially the Dates Carpaccio and the Spiced Sea Bass. We’d highly recommend ordering a la carte too – the lamb chops are particularly tasty! From start to finish, you’ll be made to feel like a VIP with every detail take care of – another great culinary and beverage experience orchestrated by the Four Seasons team where travellers and locals with an appetite for exploration can enjoy this unforgettable evening. here are some cars that are just exciting to experience. Cars which are designed to help you express the adventurer within. Land Rover have been producing top quality off-road SUVs for several decades and the Discovery range for 27 years. This has ensured their continued solid footing in the world SUV market. When we discovered we were to test drive the brand new Land Rover, compliments of Euro Motors, we knew we were in for an exhilarating journey. At first glance, the change in the overall design of the new Land Rover’s exterior shape is obvious. Gone is the box shape of precious models, replaced by a far more aesthetically pleasing design, with sleek lines and smoother contours. Despite the drastic change, this vehicle is still all Land Rover and pays homage to previous models with its slopping roofline and stadium styled seating within. We have to say the design is an improvement, not just in looks, but it

also ensures less wind resistance, allowing for better aerodynamics and a quieter ride. Slipping into the cabin, the feeling of space and comfort were immediately prominent. The leg room in all three rows of seating is ample as well as the headspace. Quality materials have been used in the creation of the interior and there is storage space everywhere! Although the layout could be considered minimalistic, it is very practical and we found the entertainment system easy to operate. The second row of seating has a flat floor in front of it, allowing for three people to sit comfortably abreast. These seats can recline and slide backwards and forwards to ensure your comfort. To enter the final row of two seats, one merely has to press a button on the second row seat and it will fold forward automatically. One must then slide the seat forward to gain access. We can say without doubt, this SUV was well designed to seat seven adults comfortably. Features
include storage space, charging points and electrically heated seats, which are all found throughout the vehicle. The boot boasts a huge amount of space as the option to automatically lower either the last row or both back rows of seats is on offer. All seats are equipped with weight sensors, so they will not fold down if someone is sitting on them. This massive loading bay is fully flat allowing for the efficient and stable packing of goods. A thin sitting shelf folds out of the boot, allowing for one to sit and admire the view. This shelf can hold up to 300kgs of weight, so don’t be scared of breaking it. The fact the new Land Rover is 450kgs lighter than the previous model is obvious as soon as you get on the road. This is partially due to the chassis and body of the car being one unit as opposed to previous generations fitting two separate parts together. It is also due to much of the body now being constructed from lightweight aluminium.

The height and position of the driver’s seat makes one feel like they are driving on a thrown, surveying the surrounding kingdom as it quietly rolls by. The electro powered assisted steering is responsive and combined with the vehicle’s surefootedness, one always feels in complete control. The new Land Rover comes with air suspension as standard which contributes greatly to a smooth ride. The overall drivability is a marked improvement on the previous model. This high performance SUV is powered by Jaguar Land Rover’s efficient range of six cylinder engines, all paired with a smooth and responsive ZF eight-speed automatic gearbox. The Discovery consists of a comprehensive suite of off-road driving technologies that ensures the vehicle’s supreme allterrain capability is easy to access for even inexperienced drivers. Land Rover’s multimode Terrain Response 2 system optimizes a range of settings, from throttle sensitivity to gear change characteristics, to suit the driving conditions at the turn of a rotary controller. We found the overall experience of the new Discovery to be relaxing and comfortable. It is an absolute pleasure to drive a responsive vehicle capable of handling any terrain or conditions. The fact it is very easy on the eye does not hurt either. ✤ GO: Call 1773 4734 or visit www.euromotors.com.bh for more information or to book a test drive. 74

NEW INFINITI Q60 SPORTS COUPE
T
he INFINITI Q60 is a premium sports coupe that combines a completely all-new design with exhilarating performance and dynamics. The taut, muscular lines of the exterior underline the Q60’s considerable performance potential – reinforced by an advanced all-new 3.0-liter V6 twin-turbo engine. The high performance 3.0-liter V6 twin-turbo engine from the new and exclusive ‘VR’ powertrain family is born out of the brand’s extensive in-house experience in six-cylinder powertrain development. The new engine available with 400hp in the Q60 Red Sport 400 – has been designed to offer increased power and torque while maintaining high levels of efficiency. A four-cylinder 2.0-liter engine, turbocharged to produce 208 hp, is also available. As standard, power is channeled through the Q60’s rear wheels for immediate dynamic responses. The Q60 is characterized by flowing sculptural lines and strong, muscular proportions. Its sinewy athleticism confidently projects a sense of motion and power, coupled with an effortless, almost weightless stance. Unifying features such as the double-arch grille and the crescent-cut C-pillars – which arc forward and emphasize the car’s dynamic quality – ensure that the sports coupe is instantly recognizable as an INFINITI. LED headlights, employing ‘light guide technology’ to spread light evenly on the road ahead, are designed to emulate the shape of the human eye, providing an alluring ‘face’ to the car. The Q60 features newly-designed 19-inch aluminum alloy wheels as standard. The ‘Red Sport 400’ models – more performance-oriented versions of the car – have wider wheels and tires at the rear, contributing to a more aggressive stance while also improving handling and grip with a higher capacity for lateral G-forces. The wheel gaps – the spaces between tires and wheel arches – are tighter than ever, further lowering the visual volume of the car and giving it a low, powerful stance. The Q60 embodies INFINITI’s dedication to developing new and innovative driving technologies that deliver a confidence-inspiring and personalized experience behind the wheel.
The second-generation of INFINITI’s world-first Direct Adaptive Steering (DAS) is an advanced ‘steer-by-wire’ system that has undergone significant re-tuning to enhance steering feel and feedback without compromising comfort. The Q60 driver can choose from seven personalized modes to customise steering performance according to their preferred driving style. Developed to work in tandem with DAS, an all-new electronic suspension system, Dynamic Digital Suspension (DDS), monitors the vehicle’s body roll, pitch and bounce rate to deliver a secure ride by further reducing unwanted steering feel and vibrations. The Q60 includes safety technologies that actively protect people in and around the car. A Modern Greek Surprise
THERE ARE NO GRAPEVINES, NO MEDITERRANEAN SEA VIEWS AND DEFINITELY NO FLORAL-APRONED GREEK MOTHERS BUSTLING AWAY IN THE KITCHEN AND YET HELIOS IS THE REAL THING SENT BY THE GREEK GODS TO BAHRAIN. FACT’S ALLY MAC WENT ALONG FOR A VERY SPECIAL CHEF’S TABLE EXPERIENCE AT THE CHIC RESTAURANT, LOCATED AT ARGAN VILLAGE. fact magazine

CHEF’S TABLE
HELIOS wants you to understand that its food has a higher form than that knocked out by the myriad Greek tavernas. Greek food, as Head Chef Roussos Thanasis says, CAN be sophisticated and exciting. Being the huge foodies we are (and myself half Greek), we just couldn’t wait to taste the old recipes modernised. Upon arriving you notice a stylish, sleek restaurant with a very inviting atmosphere. Greek music is playing which transported us to blue skies and sunshine. The ceiling is decorated with old Greek maps and the walls adorned in elegant and classic Greek memorabilia. The staff are extremely friendly and attentive from the get-go – bonus! We start with a welcome dish, something that comes out with the compliments of the chef and is different every day! Today, it’s infused with butternut squash and pine nuts – so flavourful and a real party in the mouth before the BIG show. First up is an appetiser of tortellini shaped soft cheese mini pies, aromatic herbs and orange sauce with rose petals. Saying that we loved this tangy traditional Cretan pastry delight is an understatement – it was mind-blowing. With just the right amount of texture and a hint of rose 100 fact magazine
flavour to it – we were in awe. We were in our element when the seafood dishes arrived. The first artistic plate was sautéed Sea Bass with crispy salami, green peas and a lemon leaf sauce… truly sublime! The Sea Bass was wonderfully fresh and flavoursome, with a pea-popping crunch and a tangy salami finish to each mouthful. A lovely Mediterranean dish which clearly demonstrates the creative ethos of Helios. I was on a fish roll and couldn’t wait to taste my favourite fish - Red Mullet sandwiched between aubergine which was served in a juicy sauce and wild greens. WHAT A PAIRING of veg and fish, it was just teleio (perfect!). Next up was a palate cleansing green salad with cherry tomatoes, walnuts and aromatic honey vinaigrette. All the ripe ingredients certainly made this salad sing. Sometimes you just can’t go wrong with fresh greens and a good dressing – Helios understands this, completely. This is followed by a dish that takes time and for all the right reasons; Slow-Cooked Beef with baby potatoes, asparagus and butternut squash coulis. The beef was presented in a glass dome filled with smoke, which imparts a rich, smoky
CHEF’S TABLE
flavour to the meat, and it certainly added an artful touch to the dish. The beef just fell apart in strands, melting in our mouth with every bite. To honestly put it – we didn’t want it to end! This is the type of main that you won’t want to share because it’s just THAT GOOD. To complete the evening, we were presented with a show-stopping dessert! A plate that looked so skilfully artistic but thankfully edible; the Trilogy - chocolate presented at its best in three different forms. Each had its own unique explosion of choco heaven. Crunchy, smooth, intense and delicious all on a plate. Could this meal get any better? Chef Thanasis cooks with passion and joy
and we surely did savour the more refined Hellenistic pleasures. We love that he often came out of the kitchen to interact with guests – really adding a personalised touch for every visitor. Helios’ menu is injected with a refreshing approach to Greek cuisine and it’s safe to say that there’s nowhere else like it in Bahrain. A big BRAVO to Helios for a truly memorable dining experience from start to finish. Efxaristo from Ally Mac (the half Greek girl who wholeheartedly approves of this amazing food!). ✤ GO: Visit www.heliosbahrain.com or call 3362 4108 for reservations and more information. fact magazine

omething all of us at FACT can appreciate is a tender, juicy, sizzling cut of good meat. Nothing beats quality and cooking perfection – this is what you’ll find at Crowne Plaza Bahrain’s Steak Night. Enter La Mosaique restaurant on a Wednesday night, and meet the mother of all meaty dining deals. Located just off the lobby, La Mosaique welcomes you to a selection of steak, beef fajita, kebab, and similar poultry choices displayed in beautifullydecorated plates on a bed of ice, where the chefs are in a continuous buzz to prepare guests’ orders. Next, there’s a corner dedicated to beef chilli con carne. Delicious ground beef cooked in tomato sauce and seasoned just right, resting on banana leaves in a huge wok that sits atop low flames to keep the con carne nice and hot. Alongside this mouth-watering concoction is a host of all the toppings that you could every dream of; salsa, guacamole, onions, tomatoes, lettuce, jalapeno pickle, and sour cream. This was a corner we hungrily visited, twice. From sirloin to T-bone and fillet, there are plenty of cuts to take your pick. We chose one of each and asked for them to be cooked medium-well – that’s exactly how they were done! We had to try the beef fajita, which was nicely presented alongside a duet of guacamole and sour cream on tortilla bread – a great choice for those who are less enthusiastic about steaks. The mix grill of our choice had chicken tikka, chicken shish-tawook, and kebab – all equally delicious. The buffet complements the concept of the night with soup and an array of cold mezze and salads, a cheese corner and all the hot dishes that nicely accompany your steak; steamed vegetables, mash potatoe, rice, corn, sautéed mushroom, onion rings, mushroom sauce and gravy.

Garlic Caramel Shrimps “Tom Rim” infused ginger and chilli garlic caramel, roasted shrimps was a taste bud-pleasing dish. We’re massive seafood lovers and just the 106 fact magazine
thought of how good this caramelised garlic shrimp tasted is making us drool! Each mouthful was packed with sweet flavours… result! Lastly, coming to the desserts. Nothing on this planet is better than Sticky Rice and Hévéa, hands down, has one of the best desserts we’ve ever tried. Served in a black tin can, it looks mysterious yet super intriguing. Layers of sticky rice, peach and the base of crispy chocolate was just to-diefor! The flavours totally awakened all of our senses. Before finishing this incredible dessert, we had already made our announcement: “one to take away please.” The best part of the meal was that we left the restaurant so satisfied and not bloated meaning the dishes are all beautifully light. TASTE THE SEASON AS IS ALWAYS THE CASE WITH CAVALLI CAFFÈ, THE MUCH-LOVED LADIES-WHOLUNCH HANGOUT BREATHES NEW LIFE INTO ITS MENU ON A SEASONAL BASIS. FACT’S GEORGIE BRADLEY TRIES OUT THEIR NEW DELISH ITEMS.
B
y now you’ve probably guessed that Cavalli Caffè is our local, our regular, our go-to, our firm favourite. Not only is it super close to FACT’s headquarters, it’s in a bang central location in Al Aali Shopping Complex and the food is everything we want in a good hearty meal. So, here we are again to taste something new on the updated seasonal menu. While we love our constants, we also love change. Before we delve into the best thing on the new menu, we had some crowd-pleasers first. Starting off with a unique Cavalli Hummus alongside a basket of piping hot Arabic bread, the thick and pasty dip is all love. It’s homemade and infused with sundried tomatoes and a dash of paprika – there’s a strong tangy aftertaste (enough to make your hairs stand on end) and is nothing like any other variation on the traditional Arabic dip. Hummus can easily be forgotten after so many restaurants have added it on their menu, but Cavalli stands out with its sharp number. Up next was a Goat Cheese in Bresaola. If you like beef and cheese (especially together) this is your pick. It’s basically cured beef wrapped around goat cheese on a bed of melon tartar and cheese foam, and it’s insanely delicious. The goat cheese is very strong in flavour, as is the beef, but the melon softens the whole dish into an absolute dream. The sweet vs savoury game is something else with this dish – and to think, this is only an appetiser! 108 fact magazine
Our Pumpkin Symphony Soup won in the presentation department. The Instagramready composition saw several spoons framing the bowl of soup where each had crushed nuts and herby seasoning for us to sprinkle on top. A great way to jazz up pedestrian soup. But now, the main pull of the seasonal menu. The Prawns and Fresh Spinach Risotto. Oh, all the cream! Seasoned with select spices and pan seared prawns, we scooped up every last smear left on the plate. The prawns in particular had this succulent-charredcrunchy taste and feel with each bite and was more addictive than the next dish we always rave about (and have in bulk, when we can!) The Mela Kunafa on the dessert menu is to-die-for, you guys! It’s baked apple kunafa with homemade ice cream which went down a treat with us, as you can imagine. Best of all, the profits from this dessert will be contributed to the Royal Charity Organisation – there’s never been a better reason to eat dessert (all day, every day!). Until next season, enjoy! ✤ GO: Call 7778 8877 for more information.

BABY TALK BAHRAIN-BASED MAMA-OF-ONE ALLY MAC IS A CERTIFIED NUTRITIONIST RAISING HER BABY GIRL BELLA TO BECOME A HAPPY, HEALTHY AND STRONG CHILD. THIS MONTH, SHE TALKS ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF NUTRITION AND WHY IT’S A GOOD IDEA TO START EARLY FOR THE LONG RUN.
W
e all want our little people to grow up strong, healthy and happy and by helping them to eat well and enjoy lots of activity, we can aid our children to learn clean eating and good habits that will last a lifetime. Fetal life, infancy, and childhood are a time of rapid growth and development that requires the right energy and nutrition. This is the time in a young life when nutrition can have an impact that lasts a long time, if not, forever. Early life nourishment has a significant role on the brain and immune system as well as how the body’s metabolism reacts to foods or nutrients, that in turn may influence the likelihood of developing conditions such as obesity, allergy, heart disease and diabetes in later life… yikes! As a foodie and nutritionist, it’s super important for me to kick start my baby’s life in the right direction. The relationship between health and learning is undeniably strong: nutrition is one of the three major factors that impact a child’s growth. As genes and environment are the other two factors, eating a certain food cannot guarantee that your child will be smarter, although my mother did successfully teach (trick?) me to eat fish when I was little for that very reason. Nevertheless, research shows that nutrition in a child’s early years is linked to their health and academic performance in
later years – so starting good habits young is beneficial in the long term. Better-nourished children have an enhanced natural ability to fight infection. Under-nutrition has been proven to decrease a child’s activity levels, social interactions, curiosity and cognitive functioning. Although parents everywhere probably harbour the wish that their child wasn’t quite so hyperactively singing and jumping in their bed at 6am (thank you Bella!!), good nutrition remains a must. When there’s work to go to, bills to pay and dishes to wash, getting your child to eat what they don’t want to (especially when doing so might cause a much-dreaded tantrum) is often the least of your worries. But it’s critically important. I found that following my own nutritional guidelines was relatively straightforward during pregnancy, as well as at the start of my baby’s life. When your child starts to form likes and dislikes, my advice to you is to accept preferences but continue to introduce new foods by making silly faces and playing peek-a-boo until you hear that giggle and see your baby happily putting the spoon into their mouth themselves. Persevere. I promise they will thank you one day. ✤ Keep up with Ally on instagram @allyskitchenstories and online at www.allyskitchenstories.com. fact magazine

Do You Really Want It?
Get Ramadan Ready?
YVONNE COLE IS A PERSONAL TRAINER AND BELIEVES THAT WHEN YOU EAT CLEAN, TRAIN HARD AND TRUST THE PROCESS, YOUR CONSISTENCY AND PATIENCE PAYS OFF.
GEORGINA JENNSEN IS THE LADY BEHIND THE POPULAR LIFESTYLE BLOG, BLONDE IN BAHRAIN. A SOCIAL MEDIA INFLUENCER WHO LOVES ALL THINGS LUXURIOUS.
PEOPLE BEGIN THEIR WEIGHT LOSS and fitness journey for different reasons; some people join a gym and partake in classes, others join a cross fit box, some do martial arts and some take on a Personal Trainer; but the one thing they must all be is committed to what they are doing, as without commitment the journey is pointless. Recently I was finishing a session with one of my clients when I noticed her face changed as she looked out of the window at the gym on her compound. I then turned to see what she was looking at and saw a woman approaching the gym, smoking a cigarette; she stopped outside, I presume to finish it, and then entered the gym, walked over to her trainer with as much enthusiasm as a cow going to slaughter. My client looked at me and shook her head, saying “what is the point?” I must admit this is the first time I’ve ever seen anything like this as I know none of my clients would do anything like this, but her trainer seemed to be unfazed by her actions. It was clear to me that this woman was not mentally ready for a lifestyle change. Success on this journey requires a level of personal commitment from you as well. Commencing a course in Personal Training or any kind of workout is not simply an option to transfer personal responsibility for your health onto someone else. ✤
BEING RAMADAN READY – is this even a thing? Yes! I say. And here’s the why, and more importantly, the how. First of all, you need to get your wardrobe in shape. I’m always surprised by the amount of social events at this time of the year, whether they be earlier Iftars that take place just after sunset, or the later Ghabgas that start around 9pm and can continue until the wee hours of the following day. And Ramadan fashion is quite unlike any other, with long flowing abayas and jalabiyas in bold and beautifully rich jewel tones. This is the time of year to embrace your inner diva, and enjoy sumptuous styles that may at other times look a little OTT. Ghabga makeup up is similarly glam, with hair preferably worn down. Apart from the fabulous fashions, Ramadan offers many opportunities to spend time with family and friends, so be prepared to be seriously sociable. Make sure you get plenty of sleep during the day to allow you to be your bright and bubbly self long into the night. And then there’s the food. Minimise your intake during the day even if you’re not fasting, because oddly enough, Ramadan seems to be a time of furious feasting once the sun goes down. Always try to pace yourself once you arrive at the Iftar or Ghabga. I find sticking to a single cuisine per buffet is best, whether it be Moroccan, Indian or seafood. And for those of you who are observing the Holy Month, Ramadan Kareem! xx ✤
