Checklist
Level Out: The area you choose when you plan a party outdoors should be flat enough for tables and chairs, and the terrain should allow for guests to mingle comfortably without the fear of stumbling. The Theme: Decide on a theme, if you want one, then make, buy, or borrow any decorations you may need. Don’t forget to inform guests on your invitations. Line up any help you need: Consider hiring a professional, a part-time student, or anyone who can help with preor post-party cleaning, or to pass drinks or appetisers, replenish buffet food, tidy up, and generally take some weight off your shoulders. Create a playlist: Whether it’s the best of summer songs, DJ recommended chill-out tunes, or something relative to your guests’ personal tastes, music is key. Either set up speakers outside, or use a portable sound system to play your music. Protect your party from bugs: Though this isn’t really a problem in the Gulf, it’s best to be safe than sorry. You need to keep your food bug-free so set up a buffet table indoors, or use mesh plate covers if you plan to keep your food outside. You can also use citronella candles, or put bug-repellent fuel in torches, to provide ambient lighting and keep flying insects at bay.
Foodie Faves
Plan a casual menu. Serving food and drink that is appropriate for outdoor parties can really make or break the fun vibes. So, getting it right is essential.

Grilling: A bbq is the perfect choice because it allows for smoke to travel into open air, but also helps to lure all your hungry guests to the table. Meats, chicken, seafood and some veggies can all be cooked on a bbq, so even if you have fussy eaters – everyone will be catered to. Fresh fruits & salads: Bright and bold colours play into the garden theme and the aim here is to take advantage of the season by choosing ingredients that are most available and nutritious at this time of year. OUTDOORS have seasonal produce, imported autumnal products like nuts, beetroot, figs, mushrooms, sweetcorn, walnuts, pomegranate, pumpkin and cranberries, are just some of the foods at their best right now. Self-serve drink station: This is a party must and deserves a long table all to itself. Arrange a variety of beverage options with all the necessary accessories. Popular drinks for garden parties include fruit punch, iced tea and lemonade. Make sure all drinks are served at the temperature they’re supposed to be! Cold desserts: Remember, in the GCC, winter just means less hotter and humid than usual. So, ice creams, sorbets, milkshakes and homemade ice pops are still a must!
“I GO TO NATURE T O B E S OO T H E D AND HEALED A N D T O H AVE M Y SENSES P U T I N T U NE ONCE MORE.” The Décor
Whether it’s casual or a little more formal, having one table that’s specifically set up for dining is a must. This keeps eating time in one place, meaning more good conversation with your guests and less mess everywhere else. Centrepiece: This is your statement piece – think of it as jewellery to go with the main outfit. If you want elegance try an edible Crudité Centerpiece that recalls a vegetable patch filled with a rainbow of bitesized crudités. Or go for something simple and modern with a floral potted centerpiece. If you want trendy, try the easy, inexpensive solution of gathering clear apothecary bottles and filling them with lamp oil and wicks. Arrange the bottles, safely, in the centre, covered by a large hurricane vase. Shaded areas: It’s all about the lighting. You don’t want the sun to be making your guests squint all the time, nor do you want them to strain their eyes to see. Use hanging umbrellas for something different as a way 32

to create shade, or put up a canopy, tent, or even chose to host the party in a gazebo – it’s all about thinking out of the box to bring a sense of occasion. Outdoor furniture: We’re thinking rustic tables, wooden benches, foldout chairs, sunbeds, comfy cushions and everything in between. Having the right outdoor furniture can really add a comfort value that guests will appreciate. If there’s grass – perfect. Lay down large thick blankets with cooler sheets on top and decorate with garden pillows for comfort.
Product Picks Here are some bits and bobs that would be ideal to use at a garden party…
Accessories: We’re talking tableware, tree hangings, dessert stands, drink glasses, and anything used to decorate the surroundings. If your party is going on into the evening, use lots of cool lanterns with candles inside or string lighting, hung haphazardly on walls and branches, to create an inviting mood. Opt for the new milk bottle-style glasses for serving drinks, with funky straws.
Garden Games
When it comes down to it, there’s no outdoor party without a ton of awesome games. This is where you can really DIY and get creative! Use what you have: Assess the mood at your party and if guests are relaxing and prefer a chilled atmosphere, just whip out a deck of cards and gather around with drinks for some quick, fun games. If you want to play something that doesn’t require much effort yet still has an element of skill and competitiveness, try penny can, made famous by the hit TV show Cougar Town. And if everyone’s up and ready, get some washable marker pens and draw out large different coloured circles. What for? You guessed it – yard Twister! Larger than life: If you’ve got some cardboard boxes lying around, cut numerous large squares and write a letter on each one – voila, garden Scrabble anyone? Don’t forget, there are plenty of online websites that sell giant games like Connect 4 and Jenga, and if you fancy yourself a handy person, you can make your own through watching tutorials. Get into teams: Get absolutely everyone involved and go for the classics like charades, musical statues and musical chairs – these games get people energised and in a fun spirit – that’s what you want for a successful garden party. ✤

ARTS
Hi Kaneka! Tell us more about how the idea for ArtBahrain started… ArtBahrain has been my dream and vision ever since I arrived on the Island. I experienced the wealth of culture that Bahrain has to offer while hosting a number of exhibitions since I moved here in 2008 with my company Art Select. I came up with the idea of doing ArtBahrain as a way to be the conduit for local Bahraini artists and the international art community. What is ArtBahrain’s vision? The vision for ArtBahrain is to establish a forward thinking platform to further promote the growth of art in the country, and to bring local artists to an international audience. Describe the local arts scene in Bahrain – is there any room for development? Bahrain has had an interesting, independent artistic spirit. In 1983, 34 Bahraini artists approached the government to establish the Bahrain Arts Society, a non-government organisation aimed at supporting Bahrain cultural arts and sharing it regionally. The only thing that local artists are missing is international exposure. What do you hope to achieve through the ArtBahrain fair? I hope to create a common space for galleries and artists from around the globe to connect with collectors and art aficionados, whilst hoping that neighbouring Arab States will be more proactive in investing in and promoting their contemporary artists to the world. Tell us more about the process by which the fair has been organised… I have been in touch with artists and galleries over the years in connection with Art Select, an art advisory organisation. I believe that outreach is a key factor in sharing and spreading the word about this major initiative. I focused on working with media across the world ranging from the Middle East to the UK, as a crucial step towards attracting the right people to the fair. Why do you think it’s taken so long for something like the ArtBahrain fair to take place in the country? Art fairs are quite a new phenomenon in the Middle East. ➻ 38

Even Art Dubai is barely 10 years old. This must be seen in the context of other art fairs across the world. Just as an example, the Venice Biennale in Europe was inaugurated way back in 1895. I think it was just a matter of time before something like ArtBahrain took place. Did you face any challenges with setting up ArtBahrain? Of course, it is inevitable that there were challenges galore! As an art investment expert, I had to learn to wear different hats. But I am glad there is a wonderfully motivated, highly trained professional team that is working with me to make this happen. How can people get involved – artists and collectors/art fans? By attending the event! Apart from the art on display, we will also have forums, panel discussions, skill-enhancing workshops and other interactive activities. You can also keep updated via our social media channels too.We are happy to assist with even primary logistics like accommodation and beneficial rates for shipping etc. We have worked out bulk prices to pass on the benefits to the actual users as we want people in and not to alienate people by 40

making it expensive. Why is ArtBahrain so special to you? I want people to experience the wonderful island as I have. I came to Bahrain in 2008 and had a number of art shows across the country – this is the culmination of my work in Bahrain, and one that I hope will make a big impact in the region. What’s your advice for budding artists in Bahrain? I think exposure is crucial – I would advise them to see as much art as they can, to visit exhibitions and expose themselves to the art scene more. All of this will encourage them to engage in learning new mediums, methods, styles, and techniques and to develop themselves. Most importantly – they should express issues or facets of Bahrain and the Middle East in their art, and not lose their focus and blend in with the works of artists from the west. What does the future hold for ArtBahrain after the fair is over? We are planning to host ArtBahrain annually, with the aim of making Bahrain a focal point for art in the Middle East. ✤ GO: ArtBahrain will run from October 13 to 16. Director: Danny Boyle cast: Michael Fassbender, Kate Winslet, Seth Rogan, Sarah Snook, Jeff Daniels, Katherine Waterston. Why it’s worth watching? This is sort of a big deal. It’s one of the most anticipated films of the year, and rightly so. After all, the story is based on the late Apple CEO Steve Jobs, whose life has strangely become a massive obsession for the world’s media over the past few years. Just weeks after he passed, Walter Isaacson released Jobs’ biography, based on hundreds of interviews with his family members, friends, colleagues, competitors, and enemies. This was an honest and clear picture of a man who was an iconic visionary and someone who longed to be the Citizen Kane or Birdman of the tech world. The film shows exactly this. Writer Aaron Sorkin, director Danny Boyle, and lead star Michael Fassbender give their subject the incredible, wildly creative, and monumental show that he deserves, but all along the reality of a staggering ego, a volley of insults and ideas, and the monstrous silicon chip on the cold shoulder, helps to draw on the real life portrayals of Apple’s co-founder, and the legacy he’s left behind. If it’s entertainment you want, Steve Jobs will deliver.

Director: Sarah Gavron cast: Carey Mulligan, Helena Bonham Carter, Meryl Streep. Why it’s worth watching? The all-too familiar story of the Suffragette movement is brought to life with one woman’s story who joins the foot soldiers of the early feminist movement – women who were forced underground to pursue a dangerous game of cat and mouse with an increasingly brutal State. It’s taken way too long for such a telling cinematic release which deals with the misogyny of a century ago. By Lana Del Ray
Last month saw the latest album release from sultry singer Lana Del Ray. Already known for her mournful, lovelorn vocal style, this album represents perhaps the purest distillation of the Lana Del Ray experience. The pop-friendly abandon of High by the Beach will have the song firmly stuck in your head, for better or worse, for the rest of the day, but the soulful ambiance of Music to Watch Boys To is the kind of thing you could drift away to in a cool breeze on a Californian beach – absolutely beautiful. The eponymous track, Honeymoon could be the opening track of a David Lynch movie – one in which the beautiful jilted lover kills her husband and his younger mistress. It defines the album well, being that bittersweet combination of romance and heartbreak. The whole album is a fine demonstration of the fact that even tragic love can be beautiful. Not the most uplifting album, it is most certainly soul-stirring. 58

Duran Duran are back, with their latest album, Paper Gods, featuring a raft of collaborations between the band and artists ranging from talented to questionable. It’s a combination of the 80’s rock synths that Duran Duran are famous for, and more current pop and disco beats. A surprising name included on the tracklist was Lindsay Lohan, who contributed to the upbeat but rather cheesy Danceophobia, which will ironically probably be the most popular dance track on the album. Less surprising was the lovely Keisza, who lends her vocals to the other dancefloor filler of the album, Last Night in the City. Another inclusion was guitarist

FACT caught up with the Olympic champion to talk training routine, eating habits and inspirations… PUMA’s take on training is that it’s not an end goal but rather a means to a more positive self and a stronger game. The more energy you put in, the more you get back. PUMA Training swaps excuses for endorphins and aims to be faster, stronger, and fiercer. No matter what. Bringing PUMA’s second major Forever Faster campaign to life are the unique training stories documented on film by PUMA’s elite ambassadors – World’s Fastest Man Usain Bolt, multi-platinum recording artist Rihanna, star striker Sergio Agüero, Arsenal Football Club, the Cuban National Boxing team, and more. Shot over the course of four weeks, the film series offers a sneak peak into the training regimen these individuals undergo to make sure they are on top of their game. It intimately captures their motivations and tactics to constantly improve and elevate every game they play with energy, excellence, and enthusiasm. Supporting them is PUMA’s latest in its IGNITE franchise: the IGNITE XT. This high intensity training shoe’s responsive design maximises energy and movement throughout the campaign. We got a glimpse of the campaign in an exclusive chat with Usain Bolt…
How often do you train in a year? UB: I train for 11 months of the year, six days a week. Normally in the morning and then again in the afternoon. It’s a lot of work. What does training do for you other than the physical abilities? UB: Training gives you confidence and this helps your state of mind. I know if I’m in good shape, it’s going to be very hard to beat me, this confidence is very important in performing well. What kind of obstacles have you faced and overcome to achieve your goals? UB: In elite sports injury is always the thing that can slow you down. We push our bodies to the max and sometimes we get a sore or injured muscle or joint. I have several injuries in my career but fortunately I have a good coach and team to help me get back to the top. ➻
How do you train for speed? Any specific tips for training to become faster? UB: There are many things that help someone run faster – conditioning, strength, speed, power, technique etc. It is not just one factor. You have to train in a variety of ways and cover all the aspects. What’s a typical training session for you? UB: There isn’t really a typical session – training for me is either on the track or in the gym. It depends on the time of year and what we are working on. On the track it can be working on everything from endurance to any technical aspect of my race – the start, the drive phase, the transition for both the 100m and 200m. In the gym it’s general conditioning, strength and power. 62

exclusive Interview
Any particular food and drink that help you when you’re training? UB: I have a good diet now; I have a chef who helps me eat well. A lot of chicken, rice, vegetables. Good Jamaican food. It is also important to be well hydrated. What’s your advice for someone who’s struggling to find motivation to reach their goals? UB: You have to find that one thing that you know is going to motivate you. You might not enjoy training for example but you have to love competing and winning. If you want these things you have to be determined and train hard. Has training changed a lot for you in the past few years? UB: When I started running as a kid, it was fun – I was good at it so I just did it. I didn’t really have to train that much to win races. As I got older I realised that I have to take better care of my body. Now diet, rest, recovery etc is more important than a few years ago. What’s your single-most greatest goal ever? UB: Well, my single greatest goal is to become the greatest, pretty much. That’s what I work towards. I 64

want to be remembered as a great sportsman, to have a place in history. Which other athlete inspires you to become better? UB: I have always admired Kevin Garnett as he is a player that whether winning or losing he gives his all and inspires those around him to raise their game. Also my mentor and coach Glen Mills. He used to tell me, “Everybody on the circuit, everybody at the Championships are talented athletes already. It’s the work you put in that makes you a champion, or better than the other talented person.” ✤
Part of this integrated training campaign is the new PUMA PACT, a consumer engagement platform available through the PUMATRAC running app and puma.com/training, shareable through social media. It drives the brand’s rally cry, #NoMatterWhat, and guides consumers with the tools and motivation they would need in their commitment to make themselves faster, stronger and fiercer. The PACT will see PUMA’s elite ambassadors leading and inspiring consumers to train harder like them, #NoMatterWhat. If you’re emotions are running high and your stress levels are up, art therapy might just be the perfect way to release the tension by spilling out your feelings onto a canvas. After all, creatively expressing yourself has more benefits than you could imagine. Art therapy can help be an expressive outlet for all manners of health, mental, and in some cases, physical, disturbances. Carla Amaral offers Draw it Out sessions for anyone who is interested in finding a new channel to voice, vent or convey their mood and thoughts in a balanced and effective way. What is Art Therapy? Art therapy is a mental health field in which clients, facilitated by the art therapist, use art media, the creative process and the resulting artwork, to help with a number of life issues. This practice helps clients to explore their feelings, reconcile emotional conflicts, foster self-awareness, manage behaviour and addictions, develop social skills, improve reality orientation, reduce anxiety and increase self-esteem. Who is art therapy designed to help? Art therapy is aimed at anyone and everyone. It is an effective means of intervention for all ages: children,
Punctuality and involvement are very important steps for the development of a positive personal process. adolescents, adults and seniors. There is no need for special artistic skills, no need to know how to draw or paint. The important thing in an art therapy session is not to produce beautiful pictures, but it’s about the final creation, the process that leads to the final output, and the interpretation of the created object. Art therapy sessions can be individual (one hour sessions) or group sessions where duration varies depending on the number and age of the participants. 68

What kinds of materials are used in art therapy? There are many types of materials that can be used in an art therapy session. The Art Therapist: Carla Amaral Carla is from Lisbon, Portugal and is a qualified Art Psychotherapist who holds a BA in Design and a Postgraduate in Art Therapy/Psychotherapy from the Portuguese Society for Art Therapy. VW Scirocco R CITY RIDES - S3
fact magazine
71
ISLAND RIDES
Handsome, sleek, luxurious and fast; our much-anticipated first experience in VW’s impressive coupe was an enjoyable one. But would it be our VW hatch of choice? The Scirocco R is a hard car to quantify, as its position in the VW line-up is confusing. Though they share a platform and drivetrains, the Scirocco is presented as the sportier, more stylish coupe in comparison to the Golf family hatchback. In terms of style, the Scirocco R instantly impresses. The sleek lines, the low, wide stance, the big sports alloys and front air scoops really lend an air of performance to the car. The good news continues inside. As with any VW top-spec model, you get luxury that punches way up into premium territory, with 72
fact magazine
figure-hugging leather sports seats, a highend stereo system and a very well built feel to everything. There are also subtle hints of performance everywhere, such as the R-badge on the steering wheel and seats, the DSG gearshifter, and most prominently, the three gauges on top of the dash showing turbo pressure, oil temperature and lap time. Driving the Scirocco R is a pleasure as well – it’s smooth, powerful and fast, with VW’s lovely turbocharged 2.0l FSI inline-four engine that delivers a hefty surge of power with a satisfying growl when the turbo kicks
in. However, when you start comparing the stats between the Scirocco R and the two performance Golfs, the GTI and the R, the picture becomes a lot more complicated. So, let’s break it down: In the Scirocco R the FSI engine puts out 276hp. The Golf GTI and the Golf R both use the slightly different TSI engine, though it is also a turbocharged 2.0l inline-four. On the Golf GTI it’s rated at 217hp, and on the Golf R, which is where things get surprising, the engine puts out the most, at 296hp. Of all three, the Golf R is the only one that offers all-wheel-drive, whereas the other two are both front-wheel-drive. On the Scirocco R this means understeer, and even more so than on the Golf GTI, which is a much lighter and more nimble car. However, the Scirocco, with its extra 50 horses, definitely feels faster than the Golf GTI, especially when that turbo kicks in. So, in terms of both performance and price the Scirocco R sits between the two
ISLAND RIDES
Golfs. If you’re on a budget the Golf GTI is the least expensive of the three by a few thousand dinars, and provides excellent value in terms of enjoyment and quality. However, where decisions become really tough is between the Scirocco R and the Golf R, which are only separated by a few hundred dinars. If you like the sleek and stylish coupe look, then the Scirocco is the
car for you. But that coupe design does come at a price. The smaller boot hatch, with a very raised lip, also means that access to the boot space is less practical than on a Golf. And then there is the split rear seating, which means you can only carry a maximum of four passengers, to the Golf ’s five. So here’s the rub: Yes, the Scirocco R is a stunning looking car, and yes the interior is
stylish, cosy and well appointed. However, for just a few hundred dinars more, you can get the Golf R, which is more practical, more powerful, and all-wheel-drive. So, ultimately, it comes down to preference. Do you want a Scirocco, or do you want a Golf? While we loved the Scirocco R, as petrol heads we’d have to go with the Golf R. ✤ fact magazine

Busy Month for Jaguar Land Rover The British automaker has had an extremely busy time of it recently, first off with the unveiling of their fleet of cars to feature in the latest movie in the ‘007’ franchise, [ITALS] Spectre. The three vehicles were a special edition of

significant because it represents Jaguar’s first foray into the SUV market, with the Jaguar F-Pace, which they THEN used to break a Guinness world record for the fastest loop-de-loop ever! All very impressive…

Th e D a w n o f a New Rolls Royce It’s not often that Rolls-Royce release an all-new model, so when they do, it’s kind of a big deal. Especially when it looks as beautiful as this, the all-new Rolls-Royce Dawn. While many might consider it simply a drophead Wraith, they’d be mistaken, as Rolls Royce have gone to great pains to make the Dawn a whole new entity in its own right. Yes, it is derived from the same platform, and uses the same engine and transmission, but the similarities pretty much end there, as the coachwork involved in creating the convertible model called for a whole new approach. As a result, the surfaces of the Dawn are 80% new compared to the Wraith, especially towards the back half of the car. And the interiors have also been redesigned from the ground up specifically with open-air motoring in mind. We think the results speak for themselves. It is absolutely stunning.
Th e B e n t l e y B e n tay g a S U V An extremely bold new step for the British luxury marque has seen them produce their first ever SUV, the Bentley Bentayga. It speaks of their determination to move into this segment when they released an SUV concept, the EXP 9 F, back in 2012, which took design cues from the Mulsanne, but was generally unpopular. So, back to the drawing board they went, and this, the Bentayga, is the result. Borrowing instead on design cues from the Continental and Flying Spur, the look is much more elegant and understated, but still distinctly Bentley. The Bentayga is powered by a colossal 6.0l W12 with an output of 600bhp and 900Nm, resulting in a top speed of 187mph and a 0-100km/h time of 4.1 seconds, making it the fastest and most powerful luxury SUV in the world. fact magazine

The Samsung NX M i n i As the selfie craze threatens to engulf us all, and public monuments everywhere have hit back with selfie stick bans to stop tourists poking each other’s eyes out, Samsung says it has the answer…
So this is it, the device that caters to the social media addict who is constantly looking for that perfect selfie in the quest for that perfect Facebook profile pic! As digicams lose ground year-on-year to smartphones, they’ve had to adapt to survive, and Samsung has pounced on the one big complaint with smartphone cameras; that is that the inwards facing camera is never as good in quality as the main one, usually being lower in pixels and without flash. This means that no matter how you bend, twist, and position it, unless the ambient lighting and setting is completely right, the picture just won’t get enough ‘likes’ to stoke your fragile Instagram-fuelled sense of self-esteem. Enter the Samsung NX Mini, the digicam boasting a flip-up screen that shows you exactly how your selfie is going to look, as you take it. And gone are the days where you end up with a cramp in your fingers as you attempt to hold the camera and press the ‘take’ button with the same hand, as the NX Mini now boasts the ‘Wink Shot’ function, which detects a wink and takes the picture two seconds later. It also only weights 158 grams, so you won’t get repetitive strain injury when your attempts at selfie perfection soar above 200 shots. And the selfie-stick ban won’t stop the NX Mini
either, as it features a wide angle and wide-screen display, allowing you to capture the perfect moment with all your friends at only arm’s length, without the need for a telescopic stranger-poker. And just in case the half-hour wait to reach a laptop, to upload your images, literally sends your ego into a downwards-spiral of depression and selfloathing, fear not, the NX Mini features Tag & Go, allowing it to pair with all NFC-enabled devices, which includes most current smartphones and tablets. You can send albums to devices via WiFi as well. ✤
VERDICT: It can be argued that selfies are for the terminally self-obsessed and insecure who probably depend on the approval of friends, family, loose acquaintances and complete strangers for their own sense of self worth, and are a major contributor to the increasingly shallow and vanity-driven society we are living in today. OR people just want to document how awesome their life is from a face-on angle! If you absolutely must, then this camera will make you look good pulling a duck face in front of the Eiffel Tower, or whatever selfie pose floats your boat! fact magazine

Simply Italian “The first dish I prepared was at the age of five with my mum, we made pasta sheets together and that’s still etched in my memory.” – Chef Giuseppe Zanotti.

CHEF’S TABLE
Italian fare is known for its simplicity and quality of ingredients, and that is something that we at FACT love about the cuisine. The use of yummy cheese, succulent sauces and crunchy thin crusts – it’s every foodie’s dream. When we met Oliveto’s Executive Chef, Giuseppe Zanotti, his passion for the cuisine and love of good quality ingredients was a breath of fresh air. He prepared, for us, a delicious tasting menu that made us fall head over heels for Italian fare all over again… 110 fact magazine
Juicy tomatoes in a mozzarella salad topped with freshly made pesto sauce – just the sound of it is so tempting. But Chef Giuseppe had something unique in store for us when it came to this Italian staple. “We love to give our guests a special and unique experience at Oliveto,” he says. “Today, we’ll serve you some authentic Italian food including some of our signature dishes.” We were excited to see a chef go beyond pizza and pasta (though we do love those too!) and create some truly scrumptious delights. Oliveto is a beautiful fine dining restaurant located in Adliya. As chef prepared the primo, Restaurant Manager, Carlton, takes us around. “We want to give our guests an experience unique from the rest,” he says. “This will not only enhance Oliveto as a restaurant but also match the quality of food
we provide.” The restaurant has three areas; terrace, lounge and main dining. Guests can have a formal dining atmosphere, or indulge in an al fresco experience, or get together for expertly blended drinks in the lovely bar/ lounge area. Chef Giuseppe attended a famous hospitality school in Parma, Italy, as well as working under a number of good Italian chefs. This allowed him to acquire a greater understanding and base for regional Italian cuisines. He believes that learning and evolving is a process that never ends, but the foundation needs to be strong. He says: “Once you have a solid base for cooking you can experiment with the presentation, food pairing, food matching – which are things one keeps learning throughout their life. It’s a study I have still not finished.”
CHEF’S TABLE
As we browse through the menu, Chef Giuseppe explains more about the food served at Oliveto. “Our menu is a combination of dishes from various regions of Italy,” he says. “Working with a few Michelin Starred chefs in the past, I learned the fine-dining style, which I combine with the authenticity of Italy to present these dishes to our guests,” he explains. Our starters come out to the table, the cubo di tonno scottato and Breasola. The first of the two is a cube-seared tuna, crusted with sesame seeds which give a fabulous crunchiness to the dish. This helps to balance out the raw tuna taste, which we love. A standout here is also the anchovy sauce which complements the tuna very well - a rare and delicious combination. Moving onto the breasola – we’ve had this dish on many occasions, but never has it been presented quite like this. This is breasola stuffed with goat cheese mousse, and wild rocket honey, then it’s rolled and served on a bed of rocket leaves and Parmesan cheese chips – we were definitely impressed. There was a welcomed sweetness to the usually savoury dish, and this made it refreshingly unique. So, where are the ingredients for Oliveto sourced? “Certain ingredients are from Italy,
and some of them are sourced locally,” chef tells us. “I like to give importance to local products because the products will be fresh, and rich in vitamins and minerals.” Chef Giuseppe believes that quality is the essence of Italian cuisine. When we ask him which is more important, taste or presentation, he says: “The taste definitely comes first, but I do take a lot of time to bring about some uniqueness in the look of a dish. I actually take a pen and paper to visualise the look of the plate,” he adds. “Everything served on the plate should be edible.” For the mains, Chef Giuseppe serves us a veal favourite followed by a delectable Sea Bass dish. Both are exquisite; packed with flavour, every ingredient jumped off the plate
Menu Cubo Di Tonno Scottato Fagottini Di Bresaola Ripieni Di Mousse Al Caprino Sandwich Di Branzino Guancette Di Vitello Cotte In Vuoto Panacotta All’ Amaretto Tortino Soffice Al Lime
and pleased our taste buds. The guancette di vitello (veal) is slow cooked veal cheek, sautéed with delicious celery root puree and served with sautéed vegetables. The veal is beautifully tender and the puree tastes divine! An absolute must-try for anyone who wants something different and delicious on their visit to Oliveto. The sandwich di branzino (Sea Bass) is potato crusted Sea bass filled with prawn tartar, red onion jam, and smoked eggplant caviar. The flavours of red onion, caramel and the tartar are simply enticing – if you like the sweet and salty combination in a dish, this one’s for you. It was time for dessert - almond flavoured Panacotta and Lime cake with fennel gelatin, marinated orange and salty chocolate crumble. Exquisite - those with a sweet tooth will appreciate the difference of both desserts. We love the experience at Oliveto, and can’t wait for their Friday Brunch to begin. FACT will keep you updated about that soon! Book your table at Oliveto and be rest assured for a pleasant time there with great food and a lovely ambience! ✤ GO: Oliveto is located in Adliya. L
inks is all about quality food and an unforgettable experience, with unrivalled service and hospitality. Being a fan of their original buffet style brunch, I was curious to know how the big change would be. The A La Carte Brunch concept is taking over, with chefs exploring the art of cuisine with complexity and panache, serving classic and innovative dishes, brought to the table fresh, piping hot and in accordance to the diner’s tastes. Executive Chef Paul Gindra pays a visit to the table to highlight the delights his new brunch brings. “The Friday Brunch at Links has always been very popular, we wanted to offer guests something new by moving away from the buffet and offering an A La Carte menu,” he says. Links, located on the mezzanine floor of the club, is a large restaurant with a lounge space open to all visitors to the Royal Golf Club. The restaurant also features a cocktail bar where you can relax with your favourite beverage; there’s an outdoor terrace to enjoy the cooler season, and floor to ceiling windows offering spectacular views across the golf course. Make sure to book your table facing the beautiful views, to make the most of your time there. The Brunch menu is filled with traditional and unique breakfast, brunch and lunch items allowing guests to indulge in an expansive dining experience. If you’re in the mood for breakfast, we highly recommend you to try the Poached Eggs with Egg Muffins and Bacon or the classic French Toast. Sausage lovers simply must indulge in the Grilled Sausages, their taste and texture being out of this world. Cleanse your palate with the fruity Blueberry Flapjacks drenched in maple syrup, topped with Chantilly cream; a real treat for those with a sweet tooth. The cold offerings come from the Mezze Buffet, where you can choose from a selection of marinated vegetables, dips, garden leaves and breads. From On the Table, what’s more 114 fact magazine

delicious than the Baked Oysters topped with garlic butter and breadcrumbs; it had the perfect balance of texture and taste. The Deep-fried Sushi with avocado, cucumber and crab salad was a twist we just couldn’t get enough of. Now, onto the mains! There is a huge selection of meat and fish dishes on offer and the small portion sizes of the brunch enables you to try all the dishes on the menu, something I was very appreciative of. The Poached Hamour with zucchini skin and leek ragu is perfect for those who love nonspicy dishes, and the Pecking Duck Wraps get full marks from me for the tenderness of the duck. The Grilled Beef Tenderloin with Beetroot Puree is a meat lovers go-to dish and you can request that the chef cook your meat exactly how you like it. The House Favourites section certainly found a new fan in me as it served up some of the most delicious snacks I’ve tasted. You cannot go wrong with the Tempura Prawns, dip them in soy sauce and feel the flavours of this dish enhance with each bite. The Chicken Pankora was another firm favourite
with its crispy wings and spiced honey dip. Finally, my favourite part of a meal; the desserts. The Carrot Cake was first on the list and it didn’t disappoint! Light and creamy, it made for the perfect sweet treat. The Chococlate Eclair was enough to put any chocolate lover in their own idea of heaven, packed with a rich chocolate filling and light, fluffy cream. For those who are calorie counting, the Fruit Custard Tart is packed with strawberries and berries allowing you to keep trim whilst indulging a little. For the coffee lovers, the Espresso Panna Cotta is a must try and for those who want something different and tasty, make sure to add the Cheesecake and Creme Brûlée to your list. Unbelievably, this is just a small selection on offer at the Links A La Carte Brunch but we can firmly say that whatever you choose to indulge in, you’ll enjoy every single bite. ✤ GO: The Links A La Carte Brunch is available every Friday with unlimited soft drinks and unlimited selected alcoholic drinks at BD27 net per person, from 12 noon to 3.30pm. nspired by the philosophy of wabisabi, an Asian aesthetic value centered on the profound appreciation of the beauty and fragility of transience, Meisei offers contemporary Japanese fusion cuisine in a fine-dining setting. Meisei’s use of deep-shaded wood with the coolness of stone features, as well as its practical design and play on light and colour, sets the perfect back drop to savour the alluring and seductive tastes of the East. Widely known to serve culinary creations to its guests through a tantalising South East Asian brunch menu, Meisei doesn’t disappoint on the food front. Thought the a la carte offerings are not all-you-can-eat style, there is a fresh concept of choosing one dish from each category on the menu. Freshly prepared with fantastic flavours that will linger for a while, we wished that the menu was in fact unlimited. This could only make the brunch even better than it is now. The portion sizes are tapas style, so perfect to fill one person, at most two. By the end of the brunch you will be happily full, having eaten a number of dishes from different food sections. It was a tough decision to choose just one dish from each set, but we managed to do pretty well. For the starters take one pick from each of the following categories; Beginning, Sarada (Salad), Asian Tapas, Nigiri, and Kim Bap (Maki). The main course offerings include; Rice Selection, From the Sea, From the Land and Raw Minced. Make sure to leave space for the dessert, as the options really are scrumptious. Here we have what you absolutely must try at the Meisei Friday Brunch. 118 fact magazine
Our recommendations From the Beginning section, the crunchy shrimp popcorn was a crowd pleaser. It’s super tasty and even more delicious with the red paste-like sauce that comes with it. Try the colourful crispy salmon dim sum with a crunchy crust and a soft minced salmon stuffing – it’s definitely nothing like we’ve had before, and we were craving second helpings after our last bite! Sarada; the salads, have only two choices one veg and the other a crispy duck salad. Veggie fans can go for the Meisei Salad, but we recommend the latter, which is an explosion of flavours and textures that

everyone at the table loved. The Asian Tapas offers two kinds of pizza, one veggie and the other, beef (Kalbi Gim). The vegetarian delight pizza has a deliciously crunchy thin crust and is loaded with fresh ingredients, as well as goat cheese. The Kalbi Gim pizza also has a nice thin crust and is topped with mozzarella and tender shredded beef. Both got positive reactions at the table for having such unique flavours, so we suggest you go for whichever sounds more tempting to your palate. If you like raw fish, the Nigiri section offers crab, salmon and shrimp. We are diehard sushi fans, so picking from the Maki section took a few minutes. We decided to go for the crunchy salmon maki stuffed with cucumber, spicy mayo, spring onion
and tempura – WOW! It had the punch of South East Asia and the freshness of any good seafood – highly recommended. We knew exactly what we wanted for mains. From the Sea; we chose the Cantonese crispy seafood noodles with shrimp, squid, mussels, vegetables and sesame sauce. The dish was as mouthwatering as it sounds From the Land has two options, and we tried both. Lotus Chicken is marinated sliced chicken with oyster sauce, lotus root and capsicum – yummy! Each component of the dish was cooked perfectly, with tasty contrasting textures. The Crispy Aromatic Duck is a roll with crunchy shredded duck mixed in tangy sauces paired with onion and cucumber. This is more for those who want something a little out of the box and usually love duck pancakes. Both these dishes stood out in their own way. Last but by no means the least it’s dessert time. We have a clear winner here and it’s the Cherry Bomb. A chocolate mousse, with dark chocolate sauce, cherry puree and butter crisp. This is one of the best desserts you’ll try in a long time. Every last bite was polished off with a big smile! ✤ GO: The Meisei Friday Brunch is priced at BD25++, including selected alcoholic beverages, and BD18++ including selected non-alcoholic beverages. ADVERTORIAL
Cryolipolysis at Royal Bahrain Hospital COOLPLAS coolsculpting system is a new technology for body slimming. The whole treatment course is cool and comfortable, safe, painless and non-invasive with no recovery time.
How does it work?
This technology utilises the sensitivity of fat cells to cold injury and selectively eliminates fat tissue without affecting the skin. Termed Cryolipolysis, this is an effective noninvasive alternative for subcutaneous fat reduction through cellular death (apoptosis). Cellular apoptosis is a normally occurring biological process whereby cells are eliminated as part of normal cell turnover. When injurious external stimuli (such as cold) are applied to a target cell, the apoptotic process may be triggered. If triggered, the injured cell consequently enters an orderly, regulated process of gradual degradation into smaller bodies which are absorbed by the body’s immune system over time. The cold treatment algorithm implemented by the Coolplas technology is designed to trigger apoptosis, eliminating fat cells without generating a wound healing reaction.
How is it done?
Precisely controlled cooling is applied through the skin to the fat layer. Cooling is maintained for a pre-determined time to damage the fat cells. Fat cells begin a natural removal process that continues for several months. The natural removal of fat cells overtime results in gradual fat layer reduction (around 2-3 months).
Advantages:
1. Most popular way of losing fat that is available on the market! 2. Specially designed handpiece, no feeling of any pain when the treatment is finished. 3. No surgery, no anesthesia, no needles, no scarring, no downtime. 4. Single treatment can reduce 20-30% reduction in the fat layer. 5. The Coolipo Procedure is comfortable for most patients; they can read, work on their laptop; listen to music during the procedure. ✤ GO: Contact the Royal Aesthetic Centre at Royal Bahrain Hospital on 1724 6857/ 1724 6939 or 1724 6938 for more information.

Spa review
Blissful Beautification Dessange always provides an exquisite pamper session and this time FACT’s Pallavi Ramesh was in for a real treat! After her massage and makeover, she tells all about her relaxing experience at the island-famous spa.
H
ands down, Dessange has been my go-to place for beauty fixes and relaxation therapy. Both staff and environment provide a very warm and welcoming ambience. Their affordable and fantastic spa and salon menu leave every woman spoilt for choice. Badia, the Spa Manager escorts me to the Salon where I meet the incredible Olga; she is the heart of the Dessange Salon and someone who can enhance any woman’s natural beauty with a range of treatments. Olga had big plans for me, claiming, “it’s a makeover for you” as I sat down. I couldn’t wait to see her magic get to work! Olga suggested a chic new haircut as well as some highlights, something I had always wanted but had never pursued as I hadn’t been brave enough to take the plunge. However, I trusted Olga and her vision
and so I let her get to work, eager to see the finished product. This two-hour session began with a hair wash to get rid of the excess oil in the hair. After trimming the length a little, I was given a smooth layered cut, which added the bounce and volume back into the hair. We selected a honey brown shade from the L’Oreal DIA Richesse shade card, which is a Demi-Permanent, ammonia free colour. The technique used is the Californian Balayage – which means the look will have lighter ends and darker roots for a very natural finish. Thirty minutes after the colour application, the hair is rinsed and washed once again. We recommend you take advantage of the express treatment after the hair wash as it smooths hair and increases the durability of the hair colour. When I look at my reflection, I cannot help but love the finished product! It’s refreshing and adds the
glam-injection that I needed. Olga and her team are masters of their craft, so make sure to book in with them and let them give you the transformation you deserve. After my makeover, I headed for a massage. This is a massage I have been wanting to try for a long time; the Silhoutte Massage with Sculpting Balm. Starting with a body scrub, it then goes onto a rigorous body massage that firms the skin. This signature 90 minute massage is a combination of draining-encouraging movements that smooth the skin texture and refines your figure. It’s a unique procedure that increases your metabolism and aids the function of your digestion, making you feel revitalised in both body and mind. ✤ GO: Our experience at Dessange included a Haircut, Highlights and a Massage. Reasons to eat Breakfast
A Dose of the Great Outdoors
Yvonne Cole, Personal Trainer, believes that when you eat clean, train hard and trust the process, your consistency and patience pays off…
Christal Dennis, Personal Performance Coach and Hypnotherapist, is dedicated to helping people overcome life’s hurdles and tapping into their deepest potential...
There are two schools of thought about whether you should eat before or after a morning training session. For me, the answer is both. If you’re an early morning trainer you should try and take on some carbohydrate before you start training, ideally a couple of hours beforehand. This might be impractical if you’re getting up and going straight to the gym; if this is the case, have an energy drink before you start working out, as this will help, and then drink another one throughout your session. If you find it hard to tolerate food in the mornings, try fresh fruit juice or make a nice energy packed smoothie like banana, dates and almond milk. Ideally whatever you eat or drink should have a high GI (glycemic index) because at this point you want to get glucose into your bloodstream, quickly, to sustain your training session. If you’ve had a good night’s sleep (hopefully eight hours) your liver glycogen will have been depleted and if you do not refuel, this will have an adverse effect on your training performance. Unfortunately I have personal experience of this when a client nearly passed out during a session and then confessed she hadn’t eaten anything since the night before. Once you have finished your training session, you have two hours to refuel. This time is critical in order to replenish muscle glycogen which was used while you trained. The word breakfast means just what it says – ‘Break the Fast’. So make sure you do.
Being outdoors in nature has the ability to really help you feel more human. Studies have shown that being in nature helps lift depression, improve energy levels, and boost overall wellbeing and mental health. After all, at some point in our history as humans we lived in, and with, nature. There are a lucky few who are able to make nature a regular part of their lives like people who go hiking in the mountains or forest or live in a place that is green and beautiful. I’m sure most of you can recall a place like this and how good it can be to be there. So how do we get a daily dose of the outdoors in Bahrain? With a great desire and some creativity, we can find ways to be in nature, even if it is not on as grand a scale as we would like it to be. Here are a few tips to get a dose of green. If you have a garden, make a point of sitting in it on a daily basis. Find a way to make it comfortable when it is as hot as it has been these days; have a shade and outdoor fan. If you don’t have your own garden, make regular dates with friends who do. Make use of the public parks and walkways which have been beautified or have an ocean view. Visit neighborhoods that have a touch of nature. You’ll be surprised how some of them can actually make you feel like you’ve just travelled to somewhere else. Here’s to the Great Outdoors!

Get Ready for Cooler Climes Georgina Jennsen is the blogger behind the popular lifestyle blog, Blonde in Bahrain. Georgina loves all things beautiful and luxurious.
If you’re wondering what the word on the street is, the country’s own Blonde in Bahrain, Georgina Jennsen, has her finger on the pulse. This month she’s discussing art in public spaces…
Our tiny island of Bahrain really is the perfect place to be right now, with the sweaty days of summer slowly leaving our shores, and the cooler nights finally upon us. It’s time to switch off the a/c, throw open the windows, and head out into the great outdoors. One of my favourite things to do this time of year is to go for a walk, usually accompanied by my precious pair of matching shihtzus, April and Mai. Their legs are only little however, and their coats aren’t the coolest, so our walks often end up with at least one of them tucked under my arm. Another outdoor activity that really floats my boat is eating. At night, under the stars, with a hot meal and a cold drink – you just can’t go wrong with that scenario. There’s really nothing better. And we’re lucky enough to have a multitude of choices when it comes to alfresco dining in Bahrain, from gardens, to rooftops, and courtyards. One of my firm favourites has to be Cafe Amsterdam, with it’s fabulously flattering floor lighting, it’s just so pretty. So, as the cooler weather approaches, make the most of it and enjoy to the max!

Mohammad Ali Khan Director of Sales & Marketing, Al Areen Palace & Spa
Give us a snapshot of your career and how you got to this role in Bahrain‌ I started my career with Hyatt in Front office and later moved to Dubai with Taj Hotels followed by InterContinental and Radisson. I started my sales career in Dubai and spent a good 10 years there before I moved to Mumbai to open the first Sofitel in India. As Middle East is my area of expertise, I wanted to come back here after spending over three years with Sofitel. I came across this brilliant opportunity as Director of Sales & Marketing at Al Areen Palace and I found 130 fact magazine

this to be a perfect gateway to return back to the Middle East.
What do you hope to achieve with Al Areen Hotel & Spa in the next year? My vision is to position Al Areen as the most chosen and elite destination not only among leisure travellers but also a preferred location for corporate partners to do their events, conferences, and trainings. I am creating very unique meeting and conference packages to differentiate us from other city hotels. We have plans
to attract medical tourism and to add features to our spa which will help us to enhance this segment, which is also very unique. Al Areen has immense potential to attract a good mix of both leisure and corporate businesses and my goal is to achieve a healthy mix of both segments in next 12 months.
Three things that make al areen hotel & spa special... One, it’s the only desert resort in the country. Two, it is has the largest and most awarded spa in the region. And three, it offers the most unique private pool villas.
