’ve only got one word for you this month: FOOD! And so much of it. We’re back to that time of year when everyone in the FACT office goes on a culinary overdrive. We’re constantly out, going to try the newest venues in town and revisiting old favourites to see how they’re getting on. After all the eating, we’ve narrowed it down to the best of the best, based on a strict criteria of concept, quality, service and popularity, to bring you all the nominees of the 7th Citi FACT Dining Awards. Turn to p41 and check out over 200 dining destinations that made the cut. Are your favourites nominated? You can help them to win by going online and casting your vote at www.fact-magazine.com. It’s not only food that takes centre stage this month, Bahrain is hitting peak season for awesome arts, culture and music events as well as a great number of parties. A few happenings to highlight for October would be the awesome IGN Convention (p9), Bushido’s Day of the Dead Halloween Bash (p10), Oktoberfest Outings (p14), the best Think Pink activities (p16), and the biggest programme of all, Bahrain International Music Festival (p31). There’s absolutely no excuse to stay in and get bored; mark your diaries and have some fun! We also came across a super interesting heritage story after meeting musician and filmmaker Jason Carter who has been working to bring the enigmatic tales of pearl diving past to a modern day audience (p89). This is also the month where your style change can really shine. Our fashion pages are packed with new collections to inspire your autumn looks and there’s something for everyone. Begin your wardrobe overhaul starting p109. We’re about to eat our body weight in food again, so we’ll see you on the other side… of the scales. Have a great month y’all!☺

fact magazine
THE ENTERTAINMENT DJ RAVIN DJ Ravin is the mastermind music producer behind the Buddha-Bar compilation albums. In 1997, he played his first sets at Buddha-Bar Paris and greatly contributed to the concept’s unique musical signature, constantly expanding his horizons, before imprinting his unique fusion style on several compilations released by George V Records; including Bushido in Bahrain’s very own compilation album, Geisha, released in 2013. Much like Bushido’s Resident DJ Albert Mauri, DJ Ravin grew up in Mauritius. He later moved to France as a teenager and rapidly focused on his long time passion music, mixing, playing, and producing, thus creating his own imprint. DJ Ravin’s fame rapidly grew within the Parisian nightlife scene and he began to play in famous celebrity haunts such as the Rex or Les Bains Douches.
ALBERT MAURI Creative and enthusiastic, with years of experience in the international club scene, Alberto was born and raised in the paradise island of Mauritius. The Mauritian 2007 finalist of the infamous DMC DJ Championship was spotted during one of his trips by Buddha-Bar Paris’ resident djs, the very own DJ Ravin. Alberto is also well known for adding a sensual yet ethnic vibe to his energetic tunes. Having performed for Bushido’s biggest events alongside famous djs such as Lost Frequencies, Dj Pantelis, Bob Sinclar and more, plus with over 10 years experience djing for international clubs and radios across Mauritius, Paris, Dubai and Doha the lively vibes of Bushido’s resident DJ will get your body moving every time. ✤

Key to the Cure at SAKS
SAKS Fifth Avenue has again joined forces with Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C) and the Entertainment Industry Foundation for the 2016 Key To The Cure campaign. Now in its 18th year, Key To The Cure is Saks Fifth Avenue’s annual fundraising and charitable initiative to fight cancer. This year, Academy-Award winning actress Halle Berry will act as the official campaign ambassador, wearing an exclusive, limited edition t-shirt designed by Christian Louboutin. The 2016 Key To The Cure campaign officially launches on October 1 at all Saks Fifth Avenue locations in the US and Canada as well as on saks.com and saksoff5th.com. As campaign ambassador, actress Halle Berry will appear in a Saks Fifth Avenue-sponsored national public service announcement in fashion and lifestyle media outlets throughout September and October sporting the Christian Louboutin-designed t-shirt. Past ambassadors have included Jennifer Aniston, Gwyneth Paltrow, Charlize Theron, Hillary Swank, and Nicole Kidman. Halle Berry, said: “I, like so many others, have been touched by cancer, which is why I’m proud to continue to lend my support to the Entertainment Industry Foundation and Stand Up To Cancer in serving as this year’s Key To The Cure ambassador. I hope everyone will join me in supporting this critical cause by purchasing a Key To The Cure t-shirt.” Stand Up To Cancer, a programme of the Entertainment Industry Foundation, was created in 2008 to accelerate innovative cancer research through collaboration among leading scientists from different institutions and disciplines who work together to deliver new therapies to patients quickly. By galvanising the support of the entertainment indus¬try, Stand Up To Cancer creates awareness and generates widespread public sup¬port for this effort to combat all types of cancers. Marc Metrick, President, Saks Fifth Avenue, said: “Key To The Cure is one of the most important and valuable fundraising and charitable initiatives that Saks undertakes. We are committed to supporting the causes we believe in, and at almost two decades old, this annual campaign has raised close to $40 million for cancer research and treatment organisations throughout the United States. “This year, we are thrilled to collaborate with SU2C for the second year in a row, as well as have the support of Halle Berry and Christian Louboutin on our extraordinary campaign to fund cancer research and treatment,” he added. ✤ GO: Saks Fifth Avenue’s annual charity shopping weekend will kick off on October 27th at Saks Fifth Avenue locations in U.S. and Canada as well as on saks. com and saksoff5th.com. 100% of sales from the $35 t-shirt will be donated to charity.

Inspire: Developing Bahrain’s Talents for Performing Arts Inspire was founded in 2014 essentially as an arts and events organization with the aim of providing both Bahraini nationals and expatriates of all ages with opportunities to improve their individual and team performance across a broad spectrum of activities, courses and events. It’s Inspire’s aim to empower this generation and the next to step outside their circumstances and into their destiny. Students are from all walks of life and represent a wonderful cross cultural mix of the melting pot of nationalities that is Bahrain. At Inspire students and clients are given that extra ingredient that sets them apart and puts them one step ahead of the competition. This extra ingredient is the ability to perform. Director and Founder of Inspire, Lydia Martin, a composer and musician from the UK, arrived in Bahrain in 2002 with a desire to set up a programme that puts socially and financially disadvantaged youngsters on an equal footing with those from more privileged backgrounds. After a successful career in teaching at both St Christopher’s and the British School of Bahrain, Lydia was 22
fact magazine
able to develop her own theatre company MASK (Music And Stage for Kids) before eventually setting up Inspire which successfully combined arts entrepreneurship and community spirit. Through the Inspire project Lydia has been able to live out her original dream by pioneering a scholarship scheme, which selects students based on financial need and individual potential, giving each scholar the kind of opportunity that would never have been available to them otherwise. This year, Inspire was blessed by a generous donation from the US Embassy, which has been involved since the outset. The programme relies entirely on donations with the cost being around BD700 for each student that Inspire supports. This includes the cost of subsidised examination entry fees as well as a fully comprehensive performance training programme including speech and drama, voice coaching, singing, choir training, learning an instrument, tribal drumming, team building skills and playing in a band. Developing musical and theatrical performance skills is proven to
enhance learning and create high levels of self-esteem. Inspire prides itself on a family atmosphere fostering a safe, supportive and fun environment where students feel part of a team and an extended family. Inspire believes that bringing out the best in people also brings out the best in yourselves, so with this in mind, the organisation never holds back in how much time and energy is invested into young people. When you go looking for gold you will find it! It is their hope that this generation of Inspire scholars will become positive role models within the society in which they live and work because performing arts bridges the cultural divide, crosses boundaries, both social, organisational and cultural. Individuals, corporations and patrons can donate to make the change in these young peoples lives that will bring together the next generation of leaders and team players in Bahrain. ✤ GO: Visit www.inspirebahrain.com for more information.

Maki: Innovation in Presentation Terrarium Matcha (Green Tea) Tiramisu! You utter these words to any food lover in the City of London, and you’re more than likely to end up being pointed in the direction of Oliver Maki Restaurant in Soho, which is a sister restaurant of Maki Bahrain. “Why?” You ask. Because Oliver Maki London opened in February 2016 to tremendous acclaim from both media and gourmands looking for an extraordinary contemporary Japanese cuisine meal. On a single culinary website, the Terrarium Matcha Tiramisu alone achieved two million likes! One of the star dishes on Oliver Maki’s menu is simply a rendering of Matcha Tiramisu which is presented in a spherical terrarium glass container, thus making this dessert look so much like a plant to the naked eye. Lift the top of this container and dig your spoon into the soft layers of green tea powder, mascarpone cheese, Savoirdi Lady Finger cookies, and yet more mascarpone cheese infused with fresh coffee, and you’re quickly transported to cloud nine of culinary heaven! Don’t ignore the chocolate stone on the surface, and the mint leaf springing from the same surface, which intensify both the aesthetics and the flavour of this wonderful dessert. This sixth Maki installment in London served as the launch pad for a series of new presentations to dishes that were originally created in sister Maki restaurants in Kuwait and Bahrain. The Terrarium Matcha Tiramisu is but one of several dishes that would take on a whole new, sophisticated look. Other 24
fact magazine
dishes include the Oliver Maki, an eight piece Maki which was quickly dubbed tasting menu on a plate representative of eight distinct maki rolls donning different, delectable, secret house-made toppings. The Wagyu Burger Maki would follow, with an elegant circular presentation of this eight piece roll, topped with a glass cover in the shape of a dome. Mount Fuji Maki, Caviaroli Maki, and Dr. Samer Maki, would be some of the other dishes to follow. The presentation of the aforementioned dishes, and many more would soon be adopted in the Kuwait and Bahrain markets, thus adding even more beauty to the appearance of these tasty dishes. “We constantly strive to perfect our dishes, not just from a flavors perspective, but also from an aesthetic perspective,” explains co-founder and managing partner, Amer Zeitoun. ✤

HomeCare is the future of healthcare, and technology will be instrumental in exponential growth of HomeCare services. Already, home monitoring is becoming so widely accessible. Mobiles can accurately track your heart rate and blood pressure. Plenty of wearable devices are available which can track various vital signs. All these gadgets can be linked to Hospital Information Management systems. In many cases, you don’t even need to go to the hospital. Video chats with doctors may soon be a reality. A G r a i n of S and Life in the Gulf was once dominated by the Jewels of the Sea, but what many people may not know is that alongside the wealth from Pearl Diving there was also great hardship, and one of the main things to get people through the days at sea was music. Now, Bahrain-based British guitarist, Jason Carter, is on a mission to tell the story of these unknown voices in a documentary and multi-media concert. FACT’s Shabana Adam learns more‌

id you know that pearl divers of the Gulf had a song for everything? The women and children of men, who went out to sea, also had their own songs about the pursuit. In fact, music played a pivotal role in the lives of the pearl divers of the Arabian Gulf. But, it’s something that is rarely, or never, mentioned in conversation about the pearl diving industry. One man has set out to change that. Meet British guitarist and filmmaker Jason Carter, who moved to Bahrain just over a month ago and is currently working on two projects to showcase the forgotten voices of the pearl diving era. “Everyone knows that pearl diving existed but less is known about the music and that fascinates me,” Jason tells us. “The women had songs, the men had songs, and the children had songs too. All were sang as the pearl divers were preparing the boats, set to leave and go out to sea for up to 12 weeks at a time. If you talk to some old Gulf Arabs, they will often recall as children, standing on the beaches and watching the pearl divers go out to sea and still being able to hear the songs,” he says. It’s a magical notion that even the toughest labour of that time was so highly influenced by such a simple and grounding thing as music. “The role of music in this situation 90
fact magazine
Jason’s very first experience of this music was actually in Bahrain, back in 2000, when he was invited by the British Council to perform with local pearl divers. “Those concerts in 2000 and 2001 changed my whole perspective of what music can be, because I was interacting with a group of old men from a totally different culture, and they were so generous and excited, and wanted to share their stories and heritage with me,” he recalls. After the concert, the Minister of Culture approached Jason and told him “you have no idea what happened tonight,” to which he responded, “what do you mean?” One look around and Jason immediately realised that this performance had brought together Bahraini men who wouldn’t usually mix, but because of music, and specifically pearl diving music, they had come together.
is multi-faceted,” Jason says. “It kept them going. It was powerful; it gave them freedom and it kept the morale high – especially singing, it’s very personal.” Songs of longing, hope and survival were part of the divers’ every day life at sea. “I think, on the whole it was something to get them through the time at sea, but, also, the songs had beat,” Jason explains. “For example, when they were rowing they had songs that were very rhythmic; the captain would be calling and singing out to motivate them, and they would repeat the words as they rowed. “There were songs for pulling the ropes, pulling the divers, there were comical songs, very melancholic songs, and even songs for when nothing was going on,” he adds.

HERITAGE “That really changed my perception and something clicked in my brain,” Jason says. “And from that moment it’s sent me off on a more conscious voyage around the world in regards to the importance of music as a platform for intercultural dialogue.” All of Jason’s connections with the Gulf and love for music led him to pursue A Grain of Sand. It was originally set to be a documentary-style film about the last remaining pearl divers in the UAE and Jason travelled the breadth of the Emirates to find pearl divers willing to share their story. It was mainly in Ras Al Khaimah where people opened up and Jason was able to gather some truly deep and moving footage. The project has now been turned into a full-fledged multimedia concert that Jason is hoping to present in a one-hour show of original interviews, old photos, videos and original music with loops and samples - dedicated to the music of the UAE’s pearl divers. “What we found in the UAE was a story of real hardship, in that the Emirates was the poorest country in the Gulf at one time,” Jason shares. “In all honesty a lot of pearl divers were slaves from Africa or India and it was a tough life and a tough industry. It was quite common that people would die at sea and when the boats came into the harbour, if there was a black flag flying it meant they had lost somebody,” he continues. “The UAE

story is important and I will tell that story through mixed media.” For the film, the focus is now Bahrain and Jason admits that it’s a lot easier to find the magic that he had originally set out to capture, as Bahraini pearl divers are a lot more open about the activity. “I’ve never had a creative project that I let go of, especially when I know it’s a good idea,” he says. Jason’s commitment to intertwining the past with the present through A Grain of Sand (did you know that a pearl begins its life as a grain of sand?) and now the upcoming film in Bahrain, are both a massive celebration of the Gulf region’s cultural identity, something we hope will always stay strong and true to its roots. ✤ GO: Visit www.grainofsand.tv and www.jasoncarter.net for more information.

Big Screen Inferno What’s it about: Robert Langdon’s morals are called into question when he becomes a suspect in a deadly plot that promises to end in global disaster. He must fight against the clock to solve his most intricate riddle yet in order to save millions and guarantee his freedom. Director: Ron Howard cast: Tom Hanks, Felicity Jones, Ben Foster, Irrfan Khan Why it’s worth watching? Tom Hanks is back in the role of one of his most loved characters, Robert Langdon, after a seven-year hiatus. As always, his performance is somewhat in the range of near perfect, something we’ve come to expect from the actor – especially after his other current hit Sully – but, here, it’s the addition of Felicity Jones as Dr Sienna Brooks that has us excited. Her brilliance shone through in The Theory of Everything and her performance in Inferno has shown she isn’t just a one trick pony, pulling our every sense into the role and taking us along for the ride. The storyline, although similar to the previous films, is still just as thrilling and moving. The element of uncertainty throughout keeps you right on the edge of your seat and the vast historical references will keep any keen learner occupied and enlightened. The European scenery doesn’t disappoint either, beautifully captured throughout. This film really is one for all tastes, whether you love the tension of a fast-paced thriller, or you enjoy a good brain teaser, you’re guaranteed to be left wide-eyed and mentally enriched.

Director: Tyler Perry cast: Bella Thorne, Brock O’Hurn, Tyler Perry, Jimmy Tatro Why it’s worth watching? Halloween breeds plenty of classic horror, so it’s refreshing when something a little different comes along. Humour is the hook of this movie and there’s plenty of LOL moments that will have you curled over. Yes, it’s silly but that’s exactly what it wants to be; the typically ridiculous storyline, the intentionally unrealistic costumes and the unrelenting satire all make this film addictively enjoyable. We’ve seen this formula before and without Tyler Perry’s performances, this film would be comparable to them all. His characters make this film what it is; a childishly good Halloween comedy. fact magazine

BIOGRAPHY
The Gratitude Diaries By Janice Kaplan
GARAGE/DANCE INDIE/POP
Gameshow By Two Door Cinema Club
The third album from the Irish indie band takes the best of their earlier music and throws in influences from some of the greatest musicians of this century. Before its release, Alex Trimble said that this album took inspiration from the likes of Prince and Bowie, and from what we’ve heard of the album, that claim has come to fruition. There’s plenty of pop, but it’s obvious that the band has broken all barriers to go outside a number od different genres in the most unusual way doing what they feel to be right, creatively. The high-pitched vocals, teamed with upbeat guitar riffs make this album undeniably catchy, whereas the psychedelic vibes give the tracks a dreamy feel that resembles the best of the Bowie era. We can’t help but think that the record missed out on becoming a summer anthem with its Fall release, but nonetheless, it’s bound to propel Two Door Cinema Club to new musical heights.
In our modern society, gratuity can be sparse and often at times we forget how effective it can be, in all aspects of our lives. This is the notion that Janice Kaplan decided to explore one New Year’s Eve after promising herself she would live gratuitously for a year to see if it had any lasting effects. This beautifully witty diary follows her journey, seeking advice and gaining insight from the most unlikely places and allowing us to be encouraged and empowered to go and live our best life.
Following My Intuition By Craig David
Craig David has become the unlikely comeback star of the year, rebranding himself and giving us some hard-hitting performances. Given that he was one of the biggest stars of the noughties, this new album has a lot to be beat. He’s moved away from the R&B and sunk into Garage and Dance, keeping his classic melodies but combining them with MCing and elements of Rap, something that has been well-received, even by longtime fans. The new album hosts a number of collaborations from some huge Grime names, ensuring that these new tracks will be massive across the dance scene and will no doubt fill the airwaves upon release. Craig David seems to have achieved the impossible, reboot a successful music career and still be as relevant now as he was back then; this is one album to be seriously excited about.

The all-new Nissan Altima has had new life breathed into the series as the mid-size sedan adopts Nissan’s latest design language.

In August, Almoayyed & Sons, who are the sole dealers for Nissan in the Kingdom, held a stylish event to launch the new 2017 Nissan Altima, at the Nissan showroom in Arad. Mona Almoayyed, Managing Director, Y.K. Almoayyed & Sons, and Mohammed Almoayyed, Director, Y.K. Almoayyed & Sons, were the senior management members to attend, along with invited media. Needless to say, neither the event nor the revealed motor vehicle failed to impress. The Altima has been upgraded to say the least. It comes complete with a fresh new look that includes the “Energetic Flow” exterior styling theme and “Gliding Wing” interior layout. Other impressive elements include “Class Leading Fuel Economy” as well as “Improved Driving Dynamics and Safety Technology.” So let us chat more about the changes adopted by the Altima. To start off, a dramatic transformation to the front end, which is the focal point of the entire vehicle. The design was created with energetic flow in mind incorporating a redesigned V-Motion grille and boomerang shaped headlights, similar to its close relative, the Maxima. This has created a more emotive and striking façade than its predecessor with a wide, deeply sculpted lower bumper, integrated fog lights and prominent chrome-trimmed grille. The reshaped headlights feature LED Daytime Running Lights that sweep into the wide raised hood, creating the perfect harmony between form and function. So the front is great! What about the back? The appearance of the rear of the car is equally expressive. Taking design cues from the front, the rear incorporates a new sculpted bumper with a dark lower accent, a new trunk lid, and lower, wider boomerang-shaped combination lights. This has helped create a car that has sleek lines and a silhouette that’s rejuvenated. Let’s hear from the Marketing Manager again. “Another valued added design feature is the standard Zero Gravity front seats which have been reshaped to increase comfort levels. This has been incorporated thanks to customer feedback, and clearly shows Nissan’s commitment to taking on-board customer sentiment and creating a driving environment that’s chock full of new technologies and upscale materials.” So we’ve investigated the shape, what about the substance behind it? The X-Tronic D-Step CVT equipped in the new Nissan Altima is among the quietest in its segment and is the best in class with

standard fuel economy of 13.2 KM/L. Technology has been amped up as well. The Altima comes equipped with First in Class Predictive Forward Collision Warning (PFCW), the Blind Spot Warning (BSW), Forward Emergency Braking (FEB), and Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA). The new steering has also been reshaped and tuned to provide real time road input and precision. Impressive! Anything else to mention? Well, the interiors are refined and follows the new “Gliding Wing“ design language. Central to the new look is the revised C-stack with available 5.0-inch and 7.0-inch displays for Navigation with Mobile Apps. All finished with the Acoustic windshield that provides a new level of cabin isolation and quietness. The Nissan Altima 2017 is offered in five grade levels including 2.5 S, SV, SL and 3.5 SV and SL grades. A pretty impressive car to say the least. ✤ GO: For more details or to arrange a test drive, please visit the Nissan showroom in Sitra, Arad or Exhibition Road or call 17 732732/ 17 221555/ 17 332232. fact magazine

Nissan launched its new 2017 Patrol V6 which made its global debut in the Middle East last month, in complement to the current Patrol V8 lineup while offering the same levels of prestige to a broader customer base in the market. Samir Cherfan, Managing Director of Nissan Middle East, said: “The new Patrol V6
complements the legendary Patrol V8 which is considered one of the most powerful, spacious and popular SUVs in the Middle East. “Specifically designed and built for the demands of the region while taking into account increasing consumer appeal for more fuel efficient, practical, full-sized SUVs, the Patrol V6 still retains the high levels of power and prestige that the legendary Patrol is famous for and has earned it the title hero of all terrains in life,” he added. The new Patrol 4L V6 was designed for and tested in the region to meet all types of terrain and temperature conditions while delivering the same legendary off-road and on-road capability. It delivers best in class power in the V6 category. With 275 horsepower and 394 Nm, the Patrol V6 offers 12 per cent more torque in the driving range than the competition while retaining the same towing capacity as the Patrol V8. The Patrol V6 weighs less and enjoys lower ownership costs, making it the ideal choice as a practical, everyday family vehicle while retaining its goanywhere readiness for any kind of adventure. And on the more active side, with parkas, reversible down coats, neoprene, acetate, maxi zips and thermo-taping. Expressed in hues which are powdery rather than full, with a vintage feel. On a more glamorous side, tailoring is reviewed towards a definition of new casual – smarter, urban, and more relaxed. HER It’s all about volumes, fabric mixes and luxury processes, marking out the oscillations between glam sport and urban biker, boho and sartorial androgyny, smart athleisure and galaxy projections. According to the tenets of sport luxury, active-wear shapes and designs are matched with glamorous materials and processes. Thus sweatshirts, t-shirts and maxi dresses are combined with lace, matelassé faux leather patches, sequins, maxi zips, fringes, lurex and passementerie. Fabrics are lightweight and semi-transparent, while faux leather is seen in jogging and basketball trousers. The heritage biker is synonymous with leather, laser-cut denim and aggressive tees. A more bohemian spirit is seen in faux-sheepskin outerwear, woollen ponchos, long fringes and jacquard alpaca knitwear. Meanwhile the appeal of androgynous tailoring shows in low-crotch chinos, overcoats, dresses and shirts in light fabrics, while not forgetting the heritage check proposed in overcoats, maxi skirts, dresses and blouses: from crêpe to wool. T-shirts play on pleating and processing: leather effects, lamination, sequins and precious iridescent caviar beads. Vintage rock prints, slogans, galaxy motifs, mathematical formulae, micro polka dots and arrows. The colour palette speaks of blacks, blues, greys, rust, camel, military green, touches of pink, fluo green, red and fuchsia – take your pick! ✤ GO: Shop Replay’s AW16 collection at www.replayjeans.com. fact magazine

CHEF’S TABLE
With over two decades of professional culinary experience, Iain Joyce is the man who’s been tasked with the role of Executive Chef at the Movenpick Hotel Bahrain. FACT sat down for a chat, and a special tasting, to see what he’s bringing to the table.
It’s no secret that when you inject new blood into something that’s constantly evolving and growing, there’s going to be a lot of ideas and welcomed change. For the Movenpick Hotel Bahrain, where food is at the forefront of many great evenings out as well as most special and social occasions, having a fresh outlook on its culinary offerings is a reason to rejoice. In this case, it’s the appointment of their new Executive Chef, Iain Joyce, that’s both exciting and intriguing. He’s worked all over the world, from New Zealand to Djibouti, China, Jordan, Bermuda and England, so if there’s one chef who understands, and appreciates, different cultures and their foods, it’s Chef Iain. “My main food philosophy, having travelled a lot, is to focus on local ingredients, local specialities and local knowledge, and build from there,” Chef Iain tells us. “It’s my first time with Movenpick and I really get the feeling that this hotel is not being arrogant. It’s not saying “we’re going to do this, and we’re going to teach the Bahrainis how to eat” – it’s more like – “we want to be where people want to come, whether they’re from Australia, England, Bahrain, Saudi or anywhere” - the Movenpick really tries to capture that and I really want to incorporate the local into our dishes on the menu, as much as we can,” he adds. With that said, Chef Iain’s aim is to always find a good balance between the local and the innovative, something that is clearly illustrated through the two starters that come out to our table; Tequila Cured Salmon with avocado and coriander, and Chilled Watermelon with goat cheese panna cotta and lime basil oil. There’s much to be said about a chef who can pair together the most unexpected flavours, like these, so flawlessly. We practically fight to fork the 130 fact magazine
first dish and once it’s passed our lips there are nothing but happy shrieks of delight at how beautifully light and tasty the salmon is. Equally great is the watermelon dish, which stands out for its freshness. “I’m more of a flavours person,” Chef Iain says. “The great thing and also the most challenging thing about a hotel environment is that you have a lot of different nationalities and people coming in. And they all have their own opinion; everyone is a critic as well as a guest, so you have to try to find a happy medium and tailor certain flavours,” he admits. Our mains are not only visually appealing, but they, again, have our knives and forks at the ready. Norwegian Salmon with braised fennel and smoked paprika cream; Prime New Zealand Beef Fillet with spiced tomatoes, candied soy and creamed potato; and Seared Local Sherry with prawn tortellini, olive oil pumpkin puree and shellfish cream. How’s that for the very first tasting he’s done in Bahrain? We were definitely impressed! “I love seafood, which is another reason why I’m so happy to be in Bahrain,” Chef Iain smiles. It’s no wonder then that the

salmon was a big winner; cooked to tender perfection, it melted in the mouth and was seasoned exceptionally well. The beef was rich and delicious, and the key to eating this dish was to make sure that you got a little piece of every ingredient on your fork – exquisite. It was the delicate pumpkin puree that really made the tortellini pop – another flavour-packed dish that we loved. When it came to dessert, we were thrilled to learn that Chef Iain had brought with him, from his previous role in China, a few kilos of the newest fruit fad – the Goji Berry. It’s one of the most “in” foods that carries great benefits like healthy skin, boost to the immune system and eye protection, amongst other things. We get a taste with the utterly divine Swiss Chocolate and Goji Berry Torte with bursts of green tea and orange. THERE. ARE.NO.WORDS. Every bite of this intricate dessert is eaten with gusto, and only our constant spoon-to-slate action occasionally breaking the silence. Next up is what was, hands down, the biggest ‘wow’ puller of all the dishes we tried; Black Cherry and Yoghurt Cremeux with a crisp meringue, cassis and vanilla sauce. It’s not even that the presentation was spectacular (which, by the way, it really was), it’s more to do with the fact that this dessert, single-handedly, converted everyone at the table who didn’t really like meringue, into die-hard meringue lovers. We later learn that Chef Iain’s trick is to not cook the meringue in the oven and let it settle instead, which gives it a gorgeous, crumbly-soft texture – simply, love at first bite. With Movenpick Hotel Bahrain’s numerous buffet and themed nights, expect to see and taste superb flavours through live cooking stations and a la carte dishes. If what we tried is anything to go by, Chef Iain Joyce is going to be making some serious foodie movements in Bahrain. ✤ GO: Visit www.movenpick.com/en/middleeast/bahrain or call 1746 0000 for reservations and more information on dining offers at the hotel. fact magazine

F
or the past eight years, one name, above all, has been tightly associated with authentic Turkish cuisine – Köşebaşı. Not only is the food something that guests constantly rave about, but the friendly, fast service is a consistent pull for many regular customers, like us. So, when the FACT team heard that Köşebaşı was set to add some new dishes to its already mighty menu, we jumped at the chance to go and be the first to try them out. The beautiful venue, located on City Centre Bahrain’s top floor (there’s a second branch in Seef Mall Muharraq too) is adorned in intricate mosaic tiles, artistic plates, suave lighting fixtures and ample seating options. An exposed wood-fired oven adds a genuine touch of Turkish flair to the ambience and the clever, practical use of space lends itself to in-mall dining. We walk into the restaurant and are immediately in good spirits – the venue is airy and inviting and many diners have gathered there for lunch; people, yes! That’s always a great sign, and indeed, we were hardly prepared for the banquet of food to come. Our culinary journey began with a variety of mezze and appetisers; hummus drizzled with chilli oil, Pembe Sultan which is homemade yoghurt mixed with beetroot and garlic, Hellimli Salata with a variety of veg and halloumi, the Ilık Piliçli Salata made up of barbecued chicken in orange mayo dressing, lettuce, cherry tomatoes and green olives, and last, but not least, the Turkish staple, Dolma. First, let’s talk about the presentation; everything is so neat on the plate, we almost don’t want to eat and ruin it – it looks THAT good! Second, portion size is excellent for sharing and great value for money – bonus! What stands out in the first round of dishes is the freshness of the ingredients – the lettuce is crunchy, the hummus is as smooth as butter and the dolma stuffing of rice and vegetables is one of the best we’ve every tried in Bahrain. Round two was just as exhilarating and also the first introduction to some of the new menu dishes. Out came the Köşebaşı Signature Mixed Grill – a HUGE wooden platter of literally every kind of grill that you can think of (and want to eat!). There’s lamb, beef and chicken, all with varying cuts 134 fact magazine
like slices, cubes, chops, tenderloin, kebaps and wings, alongside grilled mushroom, cherry tomato, French fries and bulgur (a famous Turkish ingredient of dried cracked wheat). The term “meat feast” has never been so fitting. It helps that every piece of the platter we bite into is incredibly succulent and pleasantly flavoured. For us, this dish is foodie gold for sharing!
FOODIE CORNER made of seasoned ground lamb with onion, wrapped in a homemade dough, boiled until soft and topped with garlic yogurt sauce, melted butter and Turkish spices). If we weren’t convinced about the authenticity of South Anatolia-inspired recipes and flavours before, we were, instantly, after trying each of these exquisite dishes. Dessert was a whole different ball game. Peynirli Irmik Helvasi (hot semolina with cheese, vanilla ice cream and cinnamon) and the homemade traditional Turkish Kunefe were absolute winners at the table; as was the Meghli (rice pudding spiced with cinnamon and caraway), and the Karamelize Elma Muhallebi (milk custard with caramelised apple, walnut and pine seed). A sweet ending to a fantastic meal! All we can advise is that you come to Köşebaşı on an empty stomach, because REAL Turkish cuisine just doesn’t get any better than this! ✤ GO: Visit Köşebaşı at City Centre Bahrain or Seef Mall Muharraq to try out the brand new dishes. Go to www.kosebasi.com for more information.
Two other dishes that got us all talking were the Köşebaşı Signature Seafood Platter and the Izgara Karides – yes, you heard right. The new items will satisfy long-awaited seafood cravings. The former is grilled jumbo shrimps seasoned with Turkish spices and tender squid flour then deep fried to be eaten light and crispy with grilled tomato and mushroom, special lemon dressing, and homemade Turkish tarator (walnut) sauce. The latter consists of grilled jumbo shrimps seasoned with Turkish spices, laid on a bed of sautéed spinach and mushroom, with baked potato and special lemon dressing. It’s the shrimps that are, clearly, the stars of both. Gigantic and juicy, not only do these options mix classic with creative; you’re guaranteed to enjoy a delicious and filling main if you order any one of them! We also try the Karides Sac Tava (sautéed jumbo shrimps in a traditional copper plate with a variety of veggies, topped with slightly melted cheese and served over light flames, with fresh pita bread); the Kalamar Tava (a generous portion of tender squid floured then deep fried light and crisp, served with lemon wedges and homemade Turkish tarator sauce); and Manti (little dumplings fact magazine

B
y the end of the French colonisation, Southeast Asian countries had already adopted aspects of French culture, namely in their cuisine. So when you enter Hévéa Café, you’re instantly at a cross between Parisian sophistication and Indochine authenticity. And this is also reflected in the menu items which Chef Guy Gateau says is: “Always the intention, to add a mix of both cuisines and cultures together.” With that, we dive into a heavenly selection of food from the menu. First up, a promising segue into Indochine cuisine: Shrimp Rolls packed with a hefty kick of mint, deliciously soft shrimp, lettuce and creamy avocado. The paper roll allows it to be a very light introduction and a healthy option too. From paper rolls to more heavy duty Heur de Lotus: shrimp tempura served with cabbage salad and gingered lime sweet chilli sauce. We can’t help but gorge on these as they’re incredibly moreish and the most unstoppable starter there ever was. The crunch is faultless and the sweet and sourness of the dipping sauce is beyond a perfect pairing with the shrimp. As the ultimate crowd-pleaser – we’ve never had any reason to doubt it anyway – a handsome plate of “always welcomed from Italy” Burrata is presented with depths of greenery including asparagus while generous cuts of aubergine circle the plate with tomatoes. The uncanny tastiness of Burrata has always given us the happy feels, and this serving practically gets us dancing atop the tables. Two words: rich and creamy. We’ll leave it there (or leave you to go and sink into its softness!). The mains we’re given have polar opposite meaning but are wonderfully varied. “So here’s the thing about Hévéa Café: whatever dish you pick, there’s always a lot of digging involved - by which we mean there’s one awesome surprise after the next.” French fries, this dish has the ability to set you off into a food coma. It’s also a dish which we cannot stop eating even though we are creeping towards the ‘almost full’ territory. Next up is a swimming-pool-sized bowl of the Pearl Lamb Shank which has a golden crusted cheese corn puff and is accompanied with Asian rice and cured tomato chilli sauce. A very dense dish indeed, with explosions of textures and flavours to keep you going – a fun and alternative take on a local favourite. So here’s the thing about Hévéa Café: whatever dish you pick, there’s always a lot of digging involved - by which we mean there’s one awesome surprise after the next. So as our frozen Pavlova with espresso sabayon and generous amounts
of mistika ice cream filled inside, comes our way, we are left jaw-to-the-floor. The mistika gets the top prize for its subtly silky taste and, hooray for us, its health food properties. It’s said to restore digestive problems and has been adopted as a home remedy for 3000 years stemming from a natural resin from the Pistacia Lentiscus tree. To finish us off we have a solid Date Cake with oozing caramel sauce which is a lot thicker than you’d normally get and therefore fills you right up with gooey goodness. And finally, a Pista Colada – a piña colada inspired crepe with a tropical touch that is possibly the most unique dessert at Hévéa Café. And now that we are entering the kinder weather months, we are very pumped at the idea of taking our lunches and dinners outside. Hévéa Café is the perfect venue for a spot of al fresco dining, we say! ✤ GO: Visit Hevea Café at Al Aali Shopping Complex. Call 1700 4588 for reservations and more infomration. fact magazine

FOODIE gem
An Ora Of Excellence We’ll be the first to admit there is a saturation of Japanese cuisine on the island. But let us also admit this: Ora at the DIVA HOTEL, is Bahrain’s best-kept secret. And as much as we want it to stay that way, it’s too good not to share.
I
f you don’t know about Japanese restaurant, Ora, through word of mouth, it’s unlikely you’ll just stumble across it on the off chance. You’ll find Ora in Juffair’s Diva Hotel, among other towering buildings – but on the ground floor. When you walk in, you’re not overwhelmed with décor. The restaurant plays to minimal and simple clean lines. It also has a formal air to it as well – a place for an effective business lunch. There’s a visible, obligatory sushi bar where you see the chefs whacking away on a series of chopping boards in full prestidigitation. As always, it’s very entertaining to see their physical dexterity in head spinning motion. To begin with, an Ora Salad filled with avocado, asparagus, cherry tomatoes, green leaves and herb dressing. As expected, based on looks alone, it was fresh, zingy and a great way to begin what we were told would be an epic fusion feast. The Gyoza, packed tightly with creamy, soft chicken, wrapped in rice flour paper had a good balance of grill and steamy textures, with a tinge of spice. If you want to abate some low-level peckishness, this dish is ideal, for it doesn’t impose too much, but still satisfies hunger. Now, we don’t know anyone who doesn’t always make room for a portion of Shrimp Popcorn, no matter how painfully full they are. These perfect bite-sized, super cute 144 fact magazine
nuggets are drippy and crispy – and again, with a prick of natural spiciness that has even more character when you dip into the special spicy sauce. You could go on for several rounds of Shrimp Popcorn; we feel it’s our duty to assign them as a dinner table essential (a constant conveyor belt, to be honest!) to keep everyone happy. The Sake Tartar is the most poised dish of them all. With chopped salmon, spring onion and a light sweet miso yuzu all stacked up and precisely layered, this redefines tartar as you or we know it. We can attribute the winning taste to the sweet miso yuzu but it would be criminal not to commend the baby soft salmon too. We were told that this dish combined with the Ora Salad is all you need to accomplish a light dinner – too right.
foodie gem And then, for what we came for and what excited us the most: sushi! The chef brought out princely platters of impressive maki rolls that needed next-level deciphering. First up, the Ora Tempura Maki: a hot mix of tuna, salmon, prawn, cucumber and special sauce. There’s a very strong prawn taste here, but without being overly fishy. The sweet glaze that coats it, gives it a complete taste. Next in line, the Fuji Maki: scallop (always a great variant to your humble tuna and salmon), ebi tempura, kani, mayo and the ultimate unagi sauce. This was an absolute explosion of sauce. Both the presentation and the taste were very dynamic and gave credence to the name itself. A Crunchy Prawn Maki with prawn, kani, cream cheese, spicy mayo and tobiko offers a rainbow of sweet and savoury elements with a surprise wedge of avocado that complements the Philadelphia creaminess too. And finally, for extra measure, the Tori Kara Age Chili. This dish involves flour coated fried chicken, babycorn, bell peppers, carrots, leeks, onions and garlic chili sauce. Effectively, this is sweet and sour chicken with a medley of goody greens. Like we said, this is Bahrain’s most unassuming Japanese eatery, but it’s fast becoming a firm favourite of ours, on the grounds of being a hidden gem. ✤ GO: Call 1310 0133 for reservations and more information.

There’s No Place Like Dome If it’s variety, hearty portions and good quality ingredients that you crave, Dome Café is the answer. FACT revisited this much-loved eatery to see what the menu had to offer…
T
here are only a handful of restaurants in Bahrain that can truly be recognised as an institution; Dome Café is definitely one of them. With its distinct casual charm and homely menu, the foodie haven has been welcoming diners for many years now. We thought it only fitting to give the Juffair branch a visit, in a bid to see if the name still lives up to the hype. This venue is one of Dome’s biggest and possibly busiest (attracting the navy crowd, expat workers and residents and the local community too, all in one place. With authentic wooden interior that nicely brings together large tables, big booths, comfy sofas and an attractive bar, the décor is reminiscent of a classical European coffeehouse. We take a seat in one of the comfy booths and a friendly waiter comes over right away! Now the hard bit – what to eat? Dome Café’s menu is choices galore. From an array of all-day breakfast items to fresh salads, filling soups, sandwiches, sharing platters, café classics, seafood, meaty mains, delectable desserts and an extensive drinks menu, this place has you covered for every food course and every meal of the day. Our food feat begins with a yummy Chai Chiller from the popular Espreski beverage section. A cold alternative to a smoothie or milkshake (there’s an excellent range of those too), this drink has just the right amount of caffeine kick we needed, thanks to the chai tea extracts – ideal for the morning! 146 fact magazine
First up is the crispy hot Strawberry Waffles. This is a strawberry dream on a plate; the waffles are drizzled in a beautifully delicate strawberry sauce with fresh cut strawberries on the side. It’s aptly placed in the Nice ‘N’ Light offerings because there’s nothing heavy about these waffles – they’re fluffy, like air, and we finish off the dish with hunger and haste. A brand new Quinoa Avocado Salad and classic Fish & Chips are next out to the table.
VENUE REVIEW
Everyone is immediately in awe of how fresh the ingredients are. But, it’s the balsamic vinegar and the generous helping of avocado that really make this salad a special one. The beautiful brown and crunchy batter around the fish fillet brings back memories of visiting small towns in Northern England where fish and chips is the real deal – this came very, very close! Another huge standout for us was the Tasty Snacks Sharing Platter. Made up of the most succulent chicken tenders, mouthwateringly crisp crumbed prawns and fall-off-the-bone chicken wings; we were down right impressed with the quality of each item. What made it even better is the amazing sauces that came on the side and the fact that the platter was more than enough for two or three people to share (depending on how hungry everyone is!). If you’re after something more substantial, go for the Mushroom Chicken Piccata – a super homely dish that’s so on point for winter. You’ll be spooning up the creamy lemon, caper and mushroom sauce SO fast – it’s that good! For dessert we’d highly recommend the Caramel Date Tart – from the biscuit base to the date spread and the crushed walnuts on top – everything was sweet perfection. Of course, old favourites like The Big Breakfast, Pancake Stacks, Beef Stroganoff and Chocolate Fondant, are always palate pleasing choices too. It’s safe to say that this Australian food export has successfully blended a menu of much-loved classics with some truly fresh and yummy newer options. Let it be known, that the Dome Café‘s food legacy continues, on a high! ✤ GO: Visit www.domecoffees.com or call 1781 0180 for more information.

Dining RauchiStyle We’ve been inundated with openings of new venues in Bahrain and one of the latest places to catch our attention is Rauchi at Ramee Rose Hotel. Let’s take a trip to see what it’s all about…

hen you’re in Juffair, the one thing you don’t have to worry about is food. There’s every type of cuisine for every budget available. From street food, to fast food, fine dining, and mid-range options, some of Bahrain’s best restaurants, lounges, franchises and more food choices are located there. Juffair really is your foodie oyster! One thing that is lacking, however, is the option for Asian Fusion cuisine. That’s where Rauchi comes in. The beautiful mood-lit venue has a long open kitchen where live cooking can be witnessed. The interior blends dark browns and deep reds with gold accents on he ceiling and cool hanging light fixtures. It’s a simple yet thoughtful set up that is super inviting. We walk in on a weekday evening to find groups of friends and families gathered at the tables to savour the restaurant’s popular Asian-themed buffet. Immediately, we’re up and about, taking a walk around the spread, letting our nose guide us (the aromas and 148 fact magazine
smells of different flavours is overwhelming – in a really good way!). The Asian fusion menu at Rauchi will cater to the most evolved palate, as the chefs turn their ever-inventive hands to serve up an impressive dining experience. This buffet night is a very good glimpse and taste of that. It features tasty starters like mini samosas and spring rolls; hearty mains like coconut cream-infused curries, rice and noodles; and a dessert station made up of fresh fruit and other small sweet treats. We were treated to dishes off the a la carte menu too. First up we dig into the flavourful starters; Wok-Tossed Squid Rings; Salt and Pepper Prawns; and Chicken Satay. The squid rings are beautifully-crisp and make for a great sharing starter. It’s the fresh, giant prawns that have us in awe, especially as the bed of chopped vegetables hey come on, elevates every bite of the juicy seafood. The chicken is enveloped with a delightful peanut butter taste – we love it! From the mains, the biggest standouts had to be the Stir Fried Crispy Duck; the Singapore Laksa and the Snow Peas and

Bean Sprout with Cashew Nut in Chilli Bean Sauce. Let’s talk about the duck – it’s perfectly crisp and super tasty, especially with the liplicking sauce. The laksa is like a bowl of all the things that we love about Asian food. There’s a hint of soy, coconut, lime and some spices – it’s easily one of the best dishes we’ve tried in a long time. Chinese flavours shine through in the Snow Peas and Bean Sprout dish, with the Chinese cupboard essential of Chilli Bean really packing a punch with every bite. Dessert is also a fantastic fusion mix. The Ruby Water Chestnut in Coconut Milk as well as the Banana Toffee with fried Spinach Ice Cream is unlike anything we’ve ever tasted before, and probably two dishes for more adventurous eaters. We loved the textures and, surprisingly, the spinach ice cream was not only innovative, but also tasted amazing! If all else fails, go for the Death by Chocolate – it is what it says and is reliably chocolatey – bringing our Asian fusion feast to a sweet end. Lush Lebanese Food When the craving for Lebanese cuisine strikes, we’re spoilt for choice in Bahrain. However, one name is synonymous with consistently good mezze, mains and more, and you only have to visit Abd El Wahab at any given time to see how fast its seats fill up with hungry diners. On this particular day, that was the FACT team…
W
e’re sure that many of you may have been taken to restaurants by Lebanese friends or colleagues who claim that this will be the best Lebanese food you’ll try outside of Lebanon. And all too often, that won’t always be the case. However, occasionally, you’ll wander into a place that’ll leave you surprised, and our moment of revelation came at Abd El Wahab. The Beirut-based chain, located in the World Trade Centre (on the opposite wing to Maki) is a two-storey venue that’s not only much bigger than we’d imagined it to be on the inside, but is also a beautiful blend of casually-palatial with modern fine-dining. Arabic-style fixtures adorn the walls and ceiling, yet the atmosphere is lively and super contemporary. Though the menu is not extensive, it’s to-the-point and well crafted. There are hot and cold starters, grills, mains and

desserts. Everything is familiar and the taste test is not about innovation but rather how well Lebanese food favourites are executed in flavour and presentation. First up is a tasty Raheb Salad which is made up of eggplant mixed with tomatoes and green onions. The portion is spot on – enough for two to three people to share. It’s the creamy hummus and the smoky baba ghanoush with deliciously hot bread that keeps us going inbetween the appetisers. Next up was a dish that some of us wouldn’t have immediately gone for, but someone at the table was craving adventure. Shanklish, made up of aged pungent goat cheese and served with chopped onions, pepper, parsley and tomato, was a delightful surprise – we scooped up large helpings with bread and finished the dish in mere minutes. Another standout was the Mixed Grill Skewers; juicy fall-off-the-bone meat was fought over as we all wanted the biggest piece! When it came to dessert, we were up for something with a little traditional flair and modern touch, all in one. Out of everything we tried, it was the Coupe Ghazl El Banet that had everyone licking their spoons and digging for more. What is it, we hear you say? Angel hair with sahlab ice cream , nuts and honey – it tasted as good as it sounds. We were excited to learn that the culinary team behind the scenes is currently working on more new food items to shake up the menu – including getting their very own pastry chef to make Lebanese favourites like Cheese Kunafa. The whole time we were at Abd El Wahab, customers were flocking in – businessmen, friends, local families – all had come to savour the excellent food at what has now become one of Bahrain’s top Lebanese food venues. You’ll only know if you go and try it for yourself... ✤ GO: Visit Abd El Wahab in the west tower of Bahrain World Trade Centre. Call 1713 1111 for reservations and more information.

his month there was only one thing I was looking for when it came to the spa visit; I wanted an indulgent massage with a twist – something different with a little vigour to alleviate stress. Instantly, the Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay came to mind. The last time I visited the The Spa at this property, I fell in awe of how the hotel was able to blend such grandeur with an impressive range of treatments, flawlessly. the end of November, six traditionally Thai treatments are on The Spa menu for visitors to indulge in. What makes this even more authentic is that two therapists from the Chiang Mai property have been brought over to Bahrain to add a genuine Thai touch during your chosen treatment. Having heard so much about traditional Thai therapy and healing, I was yet to experience the invigorating effects of these world-famous treatments. After much research about the philosophy behind Thai wellness, I was convinced

that this had to be the place for my first Thai-inspired treatment. All I required now was the skillful touch of a well-trained therapist to erase the stress of modern life and rejuvenate the body and senses. And so, I opted for the Oriental Blend Massage. This pressurepoint massage based on the oriental theories of energy meridians uses a soothing blend of aromatic oils and gentle bodywork techniques to relieve tension and pains, for complete rejuvenation and refreshment. Upon arrival, a friendly therapist shows me to the spacious changing area that also leads onto a palatial facilities area with stunning Jacuzzi-style whirlpool, sauna, steam room, showers, and other areas for pure pampering – it’s a labyrinth made for a much-needed wellness boost.

My therapist, Khun Tree, a super friendly lady who’s come from the Four Seasons Chiang Mai, tells me that the Oriental Blend Massage can be tailored to redefine your inner balance and outer beauty – I like the sound of that. I head into a lovely, large treatment room that has its own shower too. There’s a reason that I was particularly excited about the Thai element of this treatment – the basis and techniques for which date back thousands of years. Traditional Thai doctors within the Thai Royal family created authentic therapies and herbal medicines more than 2000 years ago, and for generations now, Thai therapy is a belief that illness stems from energy imbalance. When the energy pathways are blocked, sickness takes place. Hence why traditional Thai medicine 158 fact magazine

I was hoping that this 120-minute massage was going to give me a taster of just that – bringing the body and mind into equilibrium. The treatment began with a foot ritual in a large bowl of rose petals and lemon, followed by the selection of your chosen essential oil. I went for the lavendar as it’s the most versatile of all essential oils but is most commonly known for its relaxing effects on the body. Plus, it smells divine! When the treatment begins, expect the therapist to be up on the huge and comfortable bed. This is, after all, the Thai way; every part of the body is used to massage different areas based on

strength and pressure. Khun made this task seem like a breeze – she was quiet, discreet, very professional, and checked with me several times if the pressure was ok (it was perfect!). My neck and shoulders are full of knots and I’d given Khun permission to go for it and help to ease out the muscle tension. She tells me that in Thai medicine it is believed that energy flows through the body along ten major channels, or sen lines. If an obstruction occurs in any of these channels it is believed that pain or disease results. In this sense, traditional Thai medicine is similar to many other ancient healing systems, which believe that illnesses are caused by an imbalance within the person, or by an imbalance between an individual and their environment – mine is definitely the everyday relationship between my body and my desktop computer! This all-over-the-body, pressurepoint massage is exactly what I needed. It allowed me to relax in the moment, yet feel completely energised with a circulation boost afterwards. The summer madness is over and the sun is coming down early. I for one had a great summer in London and Bahrain which ended with a little sadness as two of my friends left to go back to London. Now back to reality. All those good intentions of keeping up with your fitness routine while on holiday may have gone out the window the moment you sat on the plane, so it’s now time to get back into the routine. If you have a Personal Trainer all you need to do is make that call to see if they have any slots available, and if you don’t have a trainer what to do? Here are some tips: First, set yourself a nutrition plan, make a list and go shopping. Make sure you have plenty of water on that list. Second, if your Personal Trainer is fully booked look for another one or find some exercise classes that will push you. Set aside time to workout and put it in your diary so you’ll stick to it. Third, set yourself realistic goals, you’re not going to be ripped in two weeks even though there are magazines out there that tell you otherwise. Finally, don’t feel guilty if you over indulged this summer, you were on holiday and that’s what you’re meant to do. Once you get your motivation back your body will reap the rewards! ✤
Some of us love the lives we lead and some of us experience so many difficult things that we can’t really say we love our lives. Sometimes we can look around at our lives and say “well, I really do have a lot to be thankful for, but I just can’t say that I love my life.” Whichever category you fall into, there is one thing for sure. We can’t wait for our lives to be perfect before we start enjoying being alive. Instead, we have to start inside of ourselves. So, if you are dealing with a difficult situation, feeling anxious or stressed out, a few simple things can set you on the path to feeling good. Whenever something unpleasant is happening, we feel bad. The first thing to do is to welcome whatever you are feeling. Say to yourself “Ah! I notice that I feel bad.” Then welcome that emotion in and be with it. Notice how it changes. Being in the present moment is also an important ingredient for happiness. You can enter the present moment by becoming aware of your breathe. As you breathe in, say in your mind: “I know I am breathing in.” As you breathe out say in your mind: ”I know I am breathing out.” You’ll be pleasantly surprised with how good you can feel! ✤

It’s also the month to celebrate great food and ale, in the form of Oktoberfest. Originating in Munich in 1810 to celebrate the marriage between Crown Prince Ludwig (who later became King Ludwig I) to Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen, Oktoberfest has become the largest public festival in the world. Guests chug pale ale out of enormous glasses served by traditionally attired ladies while dining on good ole hearty German fare. The entertainment is of the oompah-variety, provided by middle-aged men in tights and lederhosen. Some countries even hold dachshund races, in which the adorable short-legged German pooches are dressed as wieners. I mean seriously, what’s not to love about that? Oktoberfest in Bahrain is slightly lower-key, at least at the start of the night. You’ll find celebrations at most of the 5-star hotels, usually over a few nights. The food is rich and Germanic, the entertainment spirited, and most-importantly the ale free-flowing.
