INTERWOVEN RHYTHMS

Art lovers are in for a treat as celebrated Bahraini artist Areej Rajab’s newest collection is due to be showcased in Dubai, this month.

The exhibition, titled Interwoven, invites viewers to experience an artistic and therapeutic play of colours and emotions, where the intricate patterns of human behaviour are delicately overlapped with the rhythms of nature. It runs from October 17 to November 10, daily from 10am to 7pm, at Mestaria Gallery, Alserkal Avenue, Dubai.

Born and raised in Bahrain, Areej Rajab was drawn to the world of art from a young age. While her academic path initially led her to study business and general management at the University of Bahrain, her passion for art eventually steered her to the London College of Art, where her creative talents fully flourished.

Areej’s work has since resonated with collectors and enthusiasts across the Middle East and the UK, where she has exhibited extensively.

Interwoven is Areej’s expression of the deep connection between nature and human behaviour. Through her artwork, she reveals the intricate beauty of natural forms and how they mirror the complexities of human emotions. By layering colours, Areej symbolically reflects how human emotions and experiences intertwine, much like patterns in nature, echoing the masterfully harmonious designs found in nature.

“I find inspiration in nature as it is the purest source of colour,” Areej explained. “My focus is on colour combinations and how they blend and overlap rather than just colour itself,

much like how human behaviour and emotions often intertwine and influence one another.

“Different cultures can interpret colour in various ways, which adds another layer of meaning to my work.”

Her paintings, with their fluid layers of paint, brushstrokes and intentional lines, evoke a sense of movement and freedom, reflecting the rhythms and patterns found in both nature and human emotions.

Unlike artists who capture and document present moments to reflect the current experiences and complexities they navigate, Areej’s paintings reflect a place where she aspires to be – expressing an optimistic and hopeful vision of the world. Through her translation of nature, she shifts perspectives to convey joy and optimism, using a carefully chosen colour palette, weaving a spectrum of colours, with each hue and shade meticulously chosen to inspire specific emotions and moods.

She leaves her paintings untitled, believing that each viewer should have the freedom to interpret and connect with the artwork in their own way.

Don’t miss being an added story to those brushstrokes of beauty. ✤

THE STORY OF A DESIGN

Admire the works of talented designers from ‘Majal’, Al Riwaq Art Space’s design incubation programme, as they showcase their pieces at the gallery’s latest exhibition.

A skilled designer is not just a creator but also a storyteller who activates our imagination by bringing histories, traditions and practices back to our contemporary landscape. When narratives are carefully utilised within a multidisciplinary design practice, they open up diverse interpretations and an innovative problem-solving approach, all carefully embedded in the designed objects, tools and activities.

Following the conclusion of the second edition of Majal, the works of the participating designers are being showcased in an exhibition titled, Majal: Design as Storytelling, which will run until October 31 at the Al Riwaq Art Space in Gufool. The designers’ creations are rooted in storytelling practices and focus on collecting narratives and preservation of oral histories, related to land, identity, culture and heritage.

At the recent Majal 2 Design Incubator, participants embarked on a journey to unearth local narratives, reflecting on their significance for both individual and collective history, while addressing the needs of their dearest community members and co-habitants. The issues faced by local communities are echoed across the globe and in this design thinking journey, participants questioned, interviewed, investigated, prototyped and tested numerous ideations to get closer to understanding

these issues of social and environmental concern.

Strategic collaborations were formed with generations –old Bahraini craftsmen, including boat makers, textile and basket weavers and local clay potters – with the aim of reviving these valuable community techniques

Each participating designer in the exhibition poses critical questions that challenge our perspectives. Ultimately, the message of Majal is clear– design is not merely about aesthetics or functionality, it is a medium for storytelling that connects us to our roots, while guiding us towards a preferable future. It manages all this, while still honouring the history so deeply contained within us.

Curated by Yana Dimitrova and Maryam Khaled Al Khalifa, the exhibition showcases the work of talented artists, including Waleed Alfadhel, Deema Al Tharman, Saryeh Al Rumaihi, Sumana Buhasan, Aysha Abdulqader, Fatema Yusuf, Yasmeen Al Rumaidh, Hasan Albasri, Maryam Humood Al Khalifa and Huda Aldaqaq.✤

WINTER-PROOF YOUR GARDEN!

While Bahrain’s winters are mild, preparing your garden for the cooler months can help keep your outdoor space looking vibrant and healthy. With a few adjustments, you can ensure your garden thrives all season. October is the perfect month to get your garden ready and make sure it’s in top shape for the change in weather. We bring you some practical tips and tricks and hear from the experts on how to get your garden winter ready. So, put on your gardening gloves and let’s get to work!

PREPPING YOUR GARDEN FOR WINTER

Check out some essential tips to get your garden looking fresh and healthy and the envy of your neighbours.

Top Tips & Tricks

● Prepping the Beds: Start by cleaning up – remove any weeds and dead plants, making space for new growth. Then, turn the soil to loosen it, which helps with root aeration and drainage during cooler, damper weather. Add a layer of mulch to keep the soil moist and protect the roots.

● Pruning and Fertilising: Prune overgrown shrubs and trees to promote healthy growth during the cooler season. However, avoid heavy pruning, as that can stress the plants. Fertilising is key to feeding your soil and encouraging strong plant development. Opt for slow-release organic fertilisers for sustained nutrition throughout the season.

● Sustainable Ways to Prep: Adopt sustainable practices like composting your garden waste. Gather fallen leaves and kitchen scraps to create nutrient-rich compost that will feed your plants throughout the season. For watering, install a drip irrigation system, which delivers water directly to the roots, minimising evaporation and reducing water waste.

Ways To Brighten Your Garden

Winter doesn’t mean your garden has to lose its charm. With a few creative touches, you can enjoy a bright, beautiful garden and keep it cosy and welcoming all season long.

● Warm Lighting: Drape colourful fairy lights over your shrubs, around trees or use solar-powered tiki torches along garden pathways to create a warm and inviting atmosphere. Choose energy-efficient, eco-friendly options to keep your garden both beautiful and sustainable.

● Revamp Your Garden Furniture: Brighten your seating area with vibrant outdoor cushions. Choose colours like coral, teal or mustard to add warmth and cheer to the space. Don’t be afraid to mix patterns or textures – this adds a playful vibe to your garden.

● Incorporate Winter Flowers: Certain plants, such as calendulas, pansies and petunias can flourish in cooler temperatures, adding vibrant hues throughout your garden. Consider planting them in colourful pots to enhance the visual appeal even further.

● Decorative Garden Features: Garden ornaments like bright bird feeders, outdoor sculptures or wind chimes can add visual interest. You can also paint your fences or garden pots in cheerful shades to create a lively look during the cooler months.

HEAR FROM THE EXPERTS

The Bahrain Garden Club, the first and only one of its kind on the island, has been run since 1965 by a group of passionate local and expatriate gardeners. Chairwoman and Horticulturist, Zahra Abdul Malik, and avid gardener and club member, Irina Averinos, share their tips on gardening in Bahrain and making your own fertilisers.

In today’s fast-paced world, gardening should not be a source of stress or demand too much of your time. With a little know-how and practice, even a small plot can yield impressive results with minimal effort.

Essential Garden Tools

● Spade, fork, rake, trowel and hoe.

● Stainless steel tools are best because they don’t rust.

● Powered hedge trimmers and chainsaws can also be useful.

Growing Flowers & Veggies

● More than 30 varieties grow successfully in Bahrain’s climate.

● Flower beds must be cleared of fallen leaves, debris and compost and organic manure added.

● Flower and vegetable seeds, seedlings and bulbs can be purchased from local garden centres.

● Container gardening is ideal for those whose gardening activities are restricted to balconies, small spaces or even vertical units on walls. Many herbs, vegetables, flowers and small shrubs can be grown in these settings.

● The best flowers and bulbs for winter include salvia, lobelia, alyssum, stock, zinnia, marigolds, impatiens, coleus, anthuriums, petunias, gladiolus, tulips, iris and hyacinths. Sow flower seeds now and plant bulbs in November.

● Vegetables are best grown from seedlings, including tomatoes, beans, cucumber, eggplant, onions, turnip, beet and leafy veggies.

Quick and Easy Home Fertilisers

Both indoor and outdoor garden spaces will benefit from these easy-to-make home fertilisers.

Banana Peel is one of the highest organic sources of potassium (42%), which straightens the stems, helps plants flower and improves the quality of the fruit.

Dried Banana Peel Fertiliser

Collect banana peels and sun-dry them until they become black and crispy. Grind the peels into a fine powder. Add one tablespoon of the powder to your plant soil and water the plant as usual. Repeat after two weeks.

Liquid Banana Tea Fertiliser

Fill a glass jar with banana peels, add water and let stand for two to three days. Remove banana skins and pour the tea into a bigger vessel. Dilute with water (1:5 ratio) for watering your plants. It can also be used as a plant shower for diseased plants.

The Bahrain Garden Club has various gardening workshops and events throughout the year. It also holds educational programmes on Tuesdays. It is free for club members and BD2 for guests. New members are welcome! ✤

BLENDING LUXURY AND TECHNOLOGY

FACT spent the day in the new Geely Preface, a stylish and spacious saloon, full of modern tech that is more than capable of delivering an efficient on-road performance.

In recent years, China has established itself as a real contender in the global automotive industry. During this time, we have had the privilege of test-driving an array of these new offerings emerging from the Far East and, we have to say, many of them have proved rather impressive. Recently, thanks to the team at Aloula Motors, FACT got the chance to spend time with the new Geely Preface. This impressive mid-sized saloon merges an attractive exterior, a luxurious interior, high-end tech and satisfying on-road performance capabilities.

Eye-catching Exterior

First impressions matter, a fact Geely has taken to heart with the exterior design of the new Preface.

We found the vehicle’s bold and sophisticated exterior greatly enhanced by the superb composition of the sculpted bonnet. The attractive design continues into the front face, featuring a cascading waterfall-shaped, bold front grille, inspired by the picturesque Iguazu Falls in South America. Its horizontal slits draw the eye to the perfectly placed Geely crest located in the centre, while sleek daytime running lights further add to the appeal.

As we made our way around the car, we noticed the strong lines running from tip to boot, effortlessly merging the beauty of the front end with that of the back.

At the rear, we appreciated the striking, integrated LED tail lights that stretch the width of the back end in a graceful line. We also found the inclusion of quad exhaust tailpipes a great touch, adding to the sporty appeal of this finely constructed vehicle.

Luxurious Interior

The moment we entered the Preface, we were taken by the roomy and luxurious nature of the cabin. This alluring space is illuminated by natural light shining through the class-leading 0.5sq/m panoramic sunroof.

As we carefully surveyed the interior of this spacious five-seater, we felt enveloped in an environment where every detail has been crafted for comfort, safety and aesthetic pleasure.

The six-way power driver’s seat with four-way electric lumbar support proved exceptionally comfortable and provided a cool ride in the summer heat with its effective ventilation functionality – a feature shared by the front passenger seat. The effective Dual Zone Auto AC further enhanced our comfort throughout the stifling day. Two of our favourite internal inclusions were the beautifully crafted, multi-functional steering wheel that felt great in hand while delivering electrical power steering (EPS), along with the perfect placement of all touchpoints.

High-end Tech & Infotainment

Delivering a harmonious blend of technology and luxury, the Preface showcases a range of impressive modern features. These include the best-in-class 13.2-inch floating centre console and a high-definition infotainment screen. This convenient and intuitive interface provided us with first-class connectivity and entertainment while stationary and when on the move. One of our must-mention features of this new saloon is the outstanding 12-speaker auditory experience it provides.

Elevated by a Harman Infinity deluxe headrest audio system, we felt this set-up delivers nothing less than an immersive soundstage for all occupants.

We were further impressed by the class-leading 10.2-inch, full-colour LCD dashboard that acts as an interface and as a proverbial window into the car’s soul. This high-end inclusion offers seamless integration of both functionality and elegance.

Lastly, the advanced CN95 antiviral, high-efficiency filter and air quality management system ensures an experience that is comfortable, clean and safe, no matter the exterior environment.

Satisfying Power & Performance

As soon as we took to the streets, we were taken by the stable and responsive nature of the drive.

The new Preface houses an impressive 2.0TD engine paired with a seven-speed Dual-Clutch Transmission that can generate a maximum horsepower of 215hp and 325Nm of torque.

Throughout the day, we discovered this car to be a beautiful blend of power, high performance and dynamic handling.

Enhanced by the intelligent Drive-E technology, we appreciated the various driving modes on offer. These included ECO, Comfort, Sport and Intelligence – one to suit every preference. Both ECO and Comfort modes proved perfect for city street cruising, while Sport mode provided extra verve, resulting in a more exhilarating experience. The effective braking system ensured we felt in complete control at all times.

When testing the acceleration capabilities of this spritely saloon, we sped from 0-100km/h in a respectable 6.9 seconds without the car seeming to take any strain.

We were informed by the team at Aloula Motors that the superior performance is further enhanced by an exemplary 98% transmission efficiency.

Extensive Safety Features

Geely has equipped the top-of-the-range GF trim Preface model with a full suite of intelligent driver assistance and safety features designed to keep you and your loved ones as safe as can be. Included in this setup are the pioneering L2 ADAS (advanced driver-

assistance systems) and Bosch ESP 9.3 edition. This state-of-the-art technology, combined with six airbags, delivers a cocoon of safety.

Assistance features include Hill-Start Assist Control (HAC), Cruise Control, an Electronic Stability Program (ESP), a Traction Control system (TCS), an Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS), a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB), Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Lane Keeping Assist (LKA), Highway Assist (HWA) and Emergency Lane Keeping Assist (ELKA), amongst others.

In Conversation with… Darren Darwin

A visionary leader with a wealth of experience in the luxury hotel industry, the Cluster General Manager of Swiss-Belhotel Seef Bahrain and Swiss-Belsuites Admiral Juffair, shares a memorable story, his passion and his favourite perk of the job!

When managing multiple hotel properties simultaneously, how do you maintain brand consistency and seamless flow of service?

I think whether it's one hotel or 10, it's all about good communication and empowerment. I don't like to micro-manage. The team members are responsible for their own departments. I'm there to advise, support and encourage. I really believe that you can't manage a business without knowledge so everybody knows what they're doing, whether it's market dynamics in commercial or SOPs in the operation. And then just making sure that the message is consistently discussed and updated. For me, the biggest thing is communication. I think that's most

important, when you have more than one property, making sure that everyone's on the same page and we have conformity. The two hotels have their own identities, yes; different business models, yes, but conformity with a lot of things, in terms of leadership, in terms of culture, is the same.

Having worked for several premium hotel complexes throughout your career, how has your leadership style evolved over the years?

My passion's still there. I’ve always said, the day my passion goes away, I'll retire. My energy is still there; I’m quite amazed,

I've got more energy now than when I was younger. I think my leadership style has evolved because I've got more experience. I've got more knowledge. I always say to the guys, part of success is failing. So, I've learned, through some of the difficult times I've had, how to manage people in a better way. I think culture is also very important. Different cultures manage in different ways and you also need to get to know your team, because each person needs managing differently. I think over the years, I would say I've adapted because I've learned more myself and, as I've learned more, I’ve been able to pass that on to my managers and their teams.

Can you share a particularly amusing or memorable incident in your time managing international luxury resorts?

When I was in Oman, I looked after this beautiful resort on the mountain and we had a distinguished VIP staying with us for three nights. On the last night, his manager called me at 11pm and said, Darren, can you do me a favour? I said, yes, of course. He said His Highness would like 2,000 pomegranates for the morning to take back. I thought, where am I going to get 2,000 pomegranates at this time of night? I was running around, calling my team and, thankfully, they all answered and we all helped. My security manager, who was ex Omani military, must have gone around five or six farms with a truck finding these pomegranates.

We finally got them and, in the morning, the manager said that His Highness would like to say goodbye and give me a gift. So, I'm running down thinking, Rolex. Rolex, Rolex. But I got there and the gift was two goats – well they were actually oryxes. Apparently, they were very well-bred and expensive, but, well, you can’t put one on your wrist.

What's your favourite perk or benefit of working in the luxury hotel industry?

Oh, that's simple, the team, the people. There are many reasons I went into hospitality – to travel, to experience different cultures. I always believe you don't really experience a culture on vacation. But for me, it's the different teams I've met around the world.

What aspect of Bahraini culture or lifestyle has caught your interest so far?

Well, I’ve only been here two weeks but I've been very impressed with the friendliness and warmth of the Bahraini people and also the expats I've met here. I was in Oman for six years and I've been to Dubai hundreds of times. Bahrain reminds me of Oman a little bit, with the values of family, community and environment, whereas Dubai is very fast paced and competitive. Don’t get me wrong, it’s competitive here, but I think in a humbler way. So that's what's really, really stuck in my mind. ✤

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

Having owned and managed multiple dining brands, Mateo Ramos, CEO of Foodvest Holding, has had an illustrious career over the years. He talks about future plans, food industry trends and his mantra for life!

Foodvest Holding has made significant strides under your leadership over the past six years. How have your brands fared this year and what sets them apart from the competition?

Over the past six years, our brands have consistently excelled and this year is no exception. Our success is anchored in our commitment to two core pillars: food and OUR people. We prioritise nurturing ambitious talents who embrace change, fostering a culture of innovation and continuous improvement. On the food side, we take pride in preparing everything from scratch in our own commissary. By avoiding pre-packaged mixes and processed foods, we focus on using fresh, locally sourced ingredients. This approach not only provides exceptional value but also builds strong brand loyalty and lasting connections with our customers.

Can you share any upcoming projects or expansions that you're particularly excited about?

We are currently focussed on expanding our operations both locally and regionally. This July, we began construction on Caribou Coffee in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, transitioning to a fresh food concept that entirely eliminates pre-packaged sandwiches and salads. We're also excited to introduce freshly squeezed juices to our menu, alongside our signature Caribou coffee drinks. Our commitment to sourcing ingredients locally, with an emphasis on organic options whenever feasible, aligns seamlessly with our long-term vision of becoming the region's premier purveyor of brands that prioritise quality and community engagement. We are also developing a new, upscale café concept that will offer a global dining experience, taking guests on a culinary journey around the world.

What cutting-edge food technologies or trends do you believe will redefine the food industry in the coming years and how is Foodvest positioning itself to be at the forefront of these changes?

I believe that the future of the food industry lies in sustainability and transparency. Technologies that enable a more organic and verticalised supply chain [in which a company or group of companies controls multiple stages of the food supply chain, from farm to final product] will be game changers. At Foodvest, we're committed to adopting these innovations to ensure that we not only meet consumer expectations but also lead the way in providing fresh, high-quality food that connects with our community's values.

What is your advice to young entrepreneurs who want to enter this industry?

To young entrepreneurs, I would say focus on building genuine relationships with your team and your customers. Embrace change and be ready to innovate. Understand the importance of quality ingredients and the value they bring to your brand. Stay connected with your local community, as building a loyal customer base is essential for long-term success.

Among other things, you're also a motivational speaker. How did you get into this field and what's your mantra for leading a successful and fulfilling life?

I got into motivational speaking as a way to share my experiences and inspire others in the industry. My mantra is simple: Lead a purpose-driven life – be authentic, pursue excellence and make an impact. Success is about creating something meaningful with your own hands and motivating others to do the same. It's about embracing challenges, fostering a positive mindset and building a community around shared values. That’s what leads to a fulfilling life, both personally and professionally. ✤

MAKING WAVES

With the announcement of a brand new, international standard leisure facility for Bahrain, FACT caught up with Victoria Williams, General Manager of Bahrain Surf Park, to find out what’s in store.

Please tell us as much as you can about the new Bahrain Surf Park.

We’re building the first Wavegarden Cove Surf Park in the Middle East at the heart of Bilaj Al Jazayer, which will be a key tourism attraction. We expect to open early 2026.

This is going to be a world-class visitor attraction – not just a surf destination. It will be a hub for enjoying waves and water for all ages and all backgrounds.

The lake is the size of four football pitches and, incredibly, holds over a million cubic feet of fresh water! The waves, of all sizes, are made by the state-of-the-art Wavegarden Cove technology – which can accommodate around 90 surfers per hour at once. And it’s not just about surfing – even if you just want to come and enjoy the waves, we will have lots of different types of sessions to participate in. We’ll also have places to eat, drink, play. With a large restaurant, a rooftop bar, kiosks, cabanas and our beachside area, visitors can watch the action whilst eating, drinking and relaxing.

There’ll be temperature-controlled pools, a splash area, a kids’ club, play areas and seating areas.

There’ll be a fully stocked surf shop and we’ll be running lots of different kinds of events, with spaces for corporate use and corporate team building.

What was the vision and reasoning behind bringing a surf park to Bahrain?

This project has the full backing of the Bahrain Government and has been several years in development.

We wanted to create an attraction for Bahrain to be proud of. We want everyone to experience the unique joy of harnessing nature’s rolling energy and learn to command the waves.

We will have something for everyone, including children and adults who can’t swim. Beginners will be able to safely enjoy and build their confidence in and around the water, with lifeguard supervision and monitored water quality.

How will the required wave levels be achieved and what sort of activities will be available?

We have a huge inland lake and we are using state-of-the-art technology, which generates a variety of perfectly consistent waves at every level, from gentle waves for our ‘Play in the Surf’ sessions to powerful, barrelling waves and peeling perfection for experienced surfers. Inexperienced beginners and the skilled pros alike will leave the water with the biggest smiles.

If you want to learn how to swim or go bodyboarding for the first time, our popular Play in the Surf experience features our smallest waves and is suitable for the whole family to enjoy.

Is it intended as an international facility – could there be the potential for competition surfing?

Absolutely – with waves as good as you find in some of the world’s top surf spots such as Hawaii and Indonesia, competitive surfing is definitely in the plan. We already intend to host a major international surfing competition at Bahrain Surf Park in 2026.

What will your local target market be and how do you plan to get the Bahraini people and local residents involved?

Obviously, we’d like to appeal to the very broadest demographic but, that said, we’ve a specific target market in mind defined largely by transportation and ease of access to Bahrain. And with the new airport and Gulf Air’s collaboration, our message ‘Waves for All’ should resonate from Kuwait to Oman and Saudi to Sudan. There are already plenty of Bahrainis and local residents who enjoy water sports and some are already surfers who will no longer need to go farther afield to get the perfect wave. We will have numerous offers, promotions and packages, which should appeal to all skill levels and budgets.

The really important thing is to sign up on our website for the latest news and developments. We’ll be going out with early bird offers, vouchers to buy and memberships well before we open.

Tell us a bit about your team – who’s on board to bring the project to fruition in terms of expert input?

I am working with the very best! The project is being developed by a team of experts, run by Craig Stoddart, who was behind the very first Wavegarden Cove project in the world. I am privileged to work with this team, who are leading the project and collaborating with Edamah and GFH, who are the partners supporting me on a daily basis. ✤

Congratulations on your new position. What has been the most rewarding aspect of stepping into this new leadership role and how do you hope to inspire other young Bahrainis in the hospitality industry? CRAFTING FLAVOURS

Having trained in classic French cuisine at a Michelin-starred restaurant, Yassine Boulaabar, Head Chef at Clay Bahrain, has honed his culinary expertise to include various other styles. He shares his early experiences, cooking influences and penchant for Nikkei cuisine.

Your early culinary influences came from your mother. Can you describe the first dish you ever made by yourself and what was her reaction to it?

Certainly! The first dish I ever made by myself was a meatball tagine with tomato sauce. I remember being excited and a bit nervous as I prepared the ingredients, carefully blending spices like cumin, coriander and paprika to give the meatballs a rich flavour. I simmered the meatballs in a savoury tomato sauce, infused with aromatic garlic and onions, and let it all cook slowly to meld the flavours together. When I served it, my mum’s reaction was priceless. She was impressed not only by the taste but also by how well I had managed to capture the essence of a dish that was both comforting and flavourful. Her pride was evident as she took a bite and complimented the seasoning and texture. Her encouragement was incredibly motivating and made me feel that I was on the right path to exploring my culinary interests.

You trained in French cuisine at a Michelin-starred restaurant in Morocco. How has it influenced your cooking style today?

It has had a profound influence on my cooking style today. The meticulous attention to detail, technique and presentation I learnt in that setting has shaped my approach to not only flavour combinations but also the aesthetics of each dish. The experience taught me the importance of sourcing highquality ingredients and respecting their natural flavours, which I incorporate into every cuisine I explore now. Additionally, the fusion of French techniques with the rich, bold spices of Moroccan cuisine has encouraged me to embrace creativity and innovation in my cooking, inspiring me to experiment with different flavour profiles and cultural influences, such as in my current work with Nikkei cuisine. Overall, that training instilled in me a commitment to excellence and a passion for crafting memorable culinary experiences.

Clay Bahrain offers Nikkei cuisine, a blend of Japanese and Peruvian flavours. What drew you to this particular fusion and how do you ensure authenticity in your dishes?

My attraction to Nikkei cuisine stems from its vibrant and complex flavours that beautifully merge Japanese precision with Peruvian zest. This fusion not only showcases the unique ingredients from both cultures but also tells a rich story of culinary exchange and evolution. I was drawn to the idea of combining the delicate techniques of Japanese cooking, such as sushi making and fermentation, with the bold, robust flavours of Peruvian dishes, creating a dynamic dining experience that is both familiar and innovative.

To ensure authenticity in my dishes, I prioritise thorough research into traditional methods and ingredients used in both Japanese and Peruvian cuisines. I collaborate with local purveyors to source high-quality, authentic ingredients, whether it's fresh fish for sushi or traditional Peruvian spices. I’m committed to ongoing learning, seeking out mentorship from experts in both cuisines and constantly refining my techniques. By respecting the essence of each culture while allowing my creativity to shine through, I strive to deliver dishes that honour the authenticity of Nikkei cuisine, offering a unique take that resonates with our guests.

If you had to choose one signature dish from your current menu at Clay Bahrain that represents your culinary philosophy, what would it be and why?

I would select the Black Cod with Quinoa. This dish embodies a fusion of high-quality ingredients with refined technique, marrying Japanese and Western influences in a harmonious way. The miso kosho glaze represents a deep appreciation for umami and traditional Japanese flavours, while the black cod underscores a commitment to exceptional quality and texture. The mixed quinoa with vegetables and lime reflects a modern twist and a focus on comfort and indulgence. Overall, this dish captures the essence of blending diverse culinary traditions with a contemporary approach, showcasing both sophistication and a passion for flavour. ✤

IT’S BRUNCH TIME!

Enjoying a lively Friday afternoon about town, Apple Sharma headed over to InterContinental Bahrain’s Legendz Steakhouse to experience one of the longest, most leisurely brunches on the island.

When we think of brunches, it’s usually a rushed frenzy where diners race against the clock to cram in as much as possible in the short time. But at Legendz Steakhouse, that’s not the case – it’s one of the longest brunches on the island. The ‘Brunch for Food Lovers’ stretches over five hours, from 11am to 4pm, offering a more leisurely pace to savour each moment.

Upon arrival, my dining companion and I headed up to the mezzanine floor where Legendz sits, excited to experience an early brunch for a change. We were warmly greeted by the restaurant staff, all of whom looked after us brilliantly and always served with a smile.

The restaurant’s low ceiling, elegant décor and cosy ambience immediately set the tone for a relaxed afternoon, with no pressure to dive into the offerings. Instead, we took our time, sipping on refreshing bubbly and soaking in the atmosphere. What I loved most about the brunch was that although the selection was vast, it never felt overwhelming thanks to the many small, continuously replenished stations. We began our feast at the breakfast station. As much as brunch is often about hearty, mid-day meals, there's something comforting about starting with breakfast classics. Taking in the spread, I was thoroughly impressed with the selection. From eggs-to-order to sausages, beans and grilled tomatoes, the choices did not disappoint. An enticing cheese selection lined the counter, which also boasted pancakes, waffles, croissants, cereals and even a donut stand!

My companion, a lover of all things breakfast, was particularly taken with the Eggs Benedict, their yolks gloriously runny and accompanied with creamy, lemony hollandaise sauce. I was quite happy with my bowl of cereal, a delicious fruit and nut muesli pot and golden, crisp hash browns (my favourite!). We were served a basket of assorted croissants and muffins and as we finished, a lovely stack of pancakes arrived – soft, fluffy and drizzled in maple syrup – they were devoured in no time. With breakfast complete, our next stop was the salad station and Legendz presented an array that was hard to resist. From fresh pasta, seafood and chicken salads to a vibrant Caprese with tomato and mozzarella, each dish was bursting with freshness and flavour. My companion enjoyed the Japanese potato and Thai beef salads, while I particularly enjoyed the spiced pumpkin confit with feta cheese. But it was the charcuterie and terrine bar that really stood out for me. French classics like Foie Gras flavoured with French grape, Old-Fashioned Poultry and Seafood Terrine, served with compote and brioche, brought a touch of refinement to the brunch.

Moving on, my wandering eye settled on the colourful sushi and ceviche stations. I opted for veggie sushi, dipping each perfectly rolled morsel into soy and wasabi, topped with red ginger for a burst of fresh flavours. My companion felt more adventurous and went for the salmon ceviche (other choices included tuna, shrimp and red snapper). The preparation was a delightfully theatrical affair – the chef expertly mixed chopped salmon and cubed veggies with tomato, lemon and fish sauce in a cocktail shaker, before serving it in a martini glass. It looked vibrant and tasted

deliciously fresh, with just the right amount of acidity.

One of the more fun and interactive stations was the nacho bar, where we could build our own nachos from a selection of toppings. Choices ranged from Cajun chicken and pulled beef to teriyaki salmon and chili con carne, with veggie options like grilled vegetables, refried beans and zesty tomato and roasted pineapple salsas. For something a little more substantial, the live pasta station nearby offered a variety of pasta with sauces to match. I opted for tagliatelle in a creamy white sauce with mixed vegetables – a simple, yet rich and satisfying dish.

Overlooking the glass-enclosed kitchen, there was also a diverse range of international dishes, from creamy mushroom soup and lasagna Bolognese cake to herb-crusted hammour, chicken roulade and Indian butter chicken. The Thai chicken curry stood out, which the chef kindly prepared as a vegetarian version for me. We sampled a bit of everything, but the lasagna and the curries were our top picks.

Another highlight was a station offering fresh fish, seafood and marinated meats, ready to be grilled to perfection. Guests could choose from shish taouk, beef kofta and shish kebab or select from ribeye steaks and South African tenderloin, cooked to their liking. While we were tempted by everything, we chose to save room for the true star of the afternoon – the smoked beef brisket.

Served with dramatic flair, the brisket arrived under a cloche that, when lifted, released a cloud of aromatic smoke, revealing the beautifully cooked meat. The brisket, slow-cooked for 16 hours

and served with a rich, sweet barbecue sauce and dressed with cherry tomato and rosemary, was melt-in-your-mouth tender and bursting with flavour.

Just when we thought we couldn’t eat another bite, the dessert station beckoned with its enticing display of sweet treats. The mango coconut cake was a light, tropical bite, while the chocolate Rocher cake, my personal favourite, offered a rich finish to an indulgent afternoon.

With an upbeat yet relaxed atmosphere, enhanced by the DJ’s lively music, this brunch provides a perfect setting for relaxed conversations, excellent food and friendly service. For a truly leisurely brunch experience – Legendz Steakhouse is a must-try! ✤

A FOODIE HAVEN

A culinary journey of passionate creations and delightful flavours was on the cards for Apple Sharma as she savoured the delectable dishes at KYRO Lounge & Restaurant.

Tucked away in a quiet corner of Adliya is a hidden gem of an eatery, KYRO Lounge & Restaurant. Many frequent this popular haunt for its stylish and exclusive hookahs but some may not be aware that its food and drinks are equally as impressive. Having passed it many times but never stepped in, I was excited to finally experience all it had to offer.

We were warmly greeted by Executive Chef Amer Alhawaj, who took us on a tour of the multi-storeyed restaurant. We were pleasantly surprised by its spaciousness – each floor has a lounge, dining area and a bar, tastefully designed with modern and elegant aesthetics. We were soon joined by CEO and Founder, Peter John Elkhair, who enlightened us about KYRO’s extra-exclusive hookah selections. Our jaws nearly hit the floor when we learnt about the 79 unique flavours, special apparatuses (and prices!) – some even offering theatrical laser projections – apparently, a sight to behold!

The modern décor exudes a luxurious yet laid-back lounge vibe with a striking hexagon honeycomb pattern and a rich colour palette of midnight blue, teal, gold and black. These elements flow seamlessly from the plush velvety sofas to the sleek tables and artwork, while special lighting and sound systems on each floor set the perfect mood for everything from relaxing gettogethers to big nights out.

Both the ground floor and the second-floor rooftop offer al fresco dining and lounge areas, ideal for outdoor entertainment as temperatures cool down. The top floor also has an intimate

private area, housing a few select tables for private gatherings. As we were escorted to the first floor to be seated, Chef Amer introduced KYRO's innovative menu and spoke of the restaurant's collaboration with local farmers to grow its own produce. This ensures that all the dishes feature the highest quality ingredients, delivering distinct flavours and freshness, which we were all too eager to taste. We began with one of KYRO’s popular appetisers, Artichoke Dip. This dish featured a rich blend of five- and two-year aged parmesan, Gruyère and mascarpone, combined with artichokes, spinach and sun-dried tomatoes and served with crispy homemade focaccia. Creamy, gooey and not overpowering, it was a fantastic start to the meal and an ideal accompaniment to drinks – mine a refreshing non-alcoholic passion fruit mojito. Next up was Steak & Cheese – grilled steak strips, goat cheese, onion and fig jam and smoked bell peppers on a crispy baguette. Beautifully presented on a green leaf resting on a bed of raw mixed beans, this dish was a hit at the table, offering layers of flavours. The jam's sweetness balanced the intense goat cheese, perfectly complementing the tender steak strips and smoky bell peppers – a fabulously complex dish, best savoured in one bite. Moving on to the mains, the Prawn Risotto was a true showcase of KYRO’s commitment to high-quality ingredients. Made with premium Carnaroli rice, known as the ‘King of Risotto Rice’ and used by many top chefs, the dish was creamy, silky and cooked to al dente. The grilled prawns were juicy and tender, marinated to perfection and balanced beautifully with tangy tomato sauce and fresh peas. The ever-attentive team at KYRO made a point to check on us after

each course and excitedly introduced us to one of the restaurant’s signature dishes, Mushroom & Truffle Agnolotti – hand-rolled pasta, mushrooms and a black truffle sauce. A simple creation with elevated flavours, the luscious sauce almost shone as it draped the fluffy mushroom-filled pillows of pasta. Topped with one of my favourite ingredients, truffle – this dish was a real standout!

All of KYRO’s dishes tell a story of exquisite flavours and the next signature creation, Ribs with Bahraini BBQ sauce, paid tribute to the Kingdom’s culinary heritage. Sous vide for three days, the succulent meat had a melt-in-your-mouth tenderness and was served with an excellent barbecue sauce – a skilful blend of local spices – rich and flavourful. Accompanied with grilled seasonal baby vegetables and buttery mashed potatoes, this dish tasted as exceptionally delicious as it sounds.

Superbly satisfied, we anxiously awaited the three desserts we were told about earlier. First up was Panna Cotta, topped with raspberry and passion fruit purée. Inspired by raspberry ice cream, the vibrantly colourful panna cotta had the perfect wobble and a silky, creamy texture. Dressed in fresh berries, it offered a medley of sweet and slightly tart flavours.

Next came the Tiramisu. Presented in a bowl, this classic Italian dessert was given a new look. Topped with gelatinous balls of coffee and dark chocolate caviar sitting atop decadent layers of mascarpone and savoiardi biscuits, this beautiful dessert had a playful twist: a delicious cappuccino ice cream lolly!

The grand finale, The Coconut, was a sublime dessert of coconut ice cream, coconut water jelly and diced macerated pineapple, all topped with pineapple sorbet and elegantly presented in a coconut shell. Combining nature and molecular gastronomy, it captured the essence of coconut in all its forms, with a piña colada-like taste – a true standout and a stunning finish!

KYRO might be wildly popular for its speciality hookahs but its culinary creations are just as remarkable. From the carefully sourced ingredients to the intricate balance of flavours and genuine passion for food, KYRO offers a dining experience that’s as memorable as it is delicious. Whether you come for the hookahs or the food, you’ll be sure to leave with a newfound appreciation! ✤

A TASTE OF TURKEY

Liz O’Reilly discovered elegantly rendered flavours in atmospheric surroundings on a visit to Bosporus.

Bosporus Turkish restaurant is a large space upstairs in Marassi Galleria. But, despite being in a mall, one must bear in mind that this is Bahrain’s newest and most elegant and upmarket shopping destination and on the way to the eatery, you will pass some seriously impressive names. Once inside the bright and airy dining area, the seating is comfortable with plush velvet-upholstered chairs inviting diners to linger over small glasses of traditional mint tea, while mosaicked columns with a blue background call to mind the classic blue and white colours of the Turkish capital.

One full wall is taken up with a tile motif of traditional Turkish boats on the Bosphorus, the famous strait that splits Istanbul between Asia and Europe. Another wall features old black-andwhite images of the waterway from many years ago evoking an air of gentle nostalgia.

Muted colours on the walls and furnishings give a restful feel and, on one side, a window wall looks out onto a pretty terrace, which boasts stunning ocean views and will be an amazing place to dine or enjoy hookah, once the weather cools.

The staff made us feel welcome and, in no time at all, our dishes started to arrive. The signature starter was delicious and visually enticing presented on a silver coloured, crescent-shaped serving dish with an attached breadbasket. A selection of cold mezzes with a big puffy Turkish bread featured salad with Turkish green olives, tomato and parsley; silken hummus and moutabel; aci ezme – a new one for me – spicy pepper paste with tomato; cacik, creamy yoghurt with cucumber, mint and garlic; muhammara and, my all-time favourite, babaganush – smoky, sweet and utterly fabulous.

Each and every dip proved to be a perfect representation of its kind, flavourful, rich and offering a wonderful combination of textures and tastes. The bread was fluffy and light, topped with toasted seeds, and its presentation in a perfectly puffedup oval, its top crispy and base fluffy, made for a great start to our experience.

Next came the Bosporus Signature Salad with salty Tulum cheese, chopped walnuts, mixed leaves, tomatoes, pomegranate seeds and sultanas. This was joyous, like a taste of country freshness with its mixed leaves, the sharp, salty taste of the traditional goat milk cheese, that’s ripened in a goatskin casing, cutting through the sweetness of the sultanas and perfectly complemented by the smokiness of the walnuts.

Our final starter was the Mini Lahmacun – small oven-baked Turkish flatbreads topped with minced lamb, tomatoes and peppers. I must admit that I’m not a huge fan of minced meats but the addition of raw onion and a generous squeeze of lovely sharp lemon gave this a wonderful depth of flavour, bringing out the juiciness of the meat and the herbs and spices used in its preparation.

For mains, we started with the mixed grill – which was the perfect size for one or two diners, so I didn’t feel overwhelmed with meat, as is frequently the case.

Boasting skewers of chicken breast and lamb shish alongside two types of kebab, Adana and Urfa (spicy and regular), and a melting lamb chop, every bite was flavourful, the meat soft and

yielding. The Adana kebab was a particular favourite at our table, its blend of spices imparting a delicious heat that danced across the palate, perfectly complementing the tender meat, while the chicken was delightfully moist.

Alongside the grill, we enjoyed a serving of bulgur which came in a lightly spiced tomato and herb sauce with roasted chickpeas mixed in. The difference between this and regular rice was really distinct both in terms of texture and the amount of flavour it absorbs from the cooking process. The earthy, nutty piquancy provided the perfect foil to the rich meats.

The Beef Iskender Kebab, which followed, comprised slowly roasted beef doner meat served with Iskender and white sauce – described to us as being like a beef shawarma. The meat was flavourful, the fat content giving a greasy succulence and the sauces drawing forth a slightly gamey elegance.

Our final main course was the Testi Kebab, which made a show-style appearance at the table. Cooked in a clay pot topped with bread, this comforting stew of beef tenderloin with plentiful colourful vegetables in Iskender sauce was served amid billowing smoke as the pot was upended onto a hot skillet, leaving us to dig happily into the contents. The meat was mouth-wateringly rich and the vegetables had absorbed all the flavour of the aromatic tomato sauce. We also had some kibbeh alongside, which were delicious, their crispy coating and yielding tasty centre absolutely perfect.

To finish, we had a selection of traditional Turkish sweets, including Sarma Baklava, handmade phyllo pastry with sugar syrup and pistachio, walnut baklava and Sobiet Baklava and a traditional slice with Turkish ice cream. I loved the heavy sweetness of these desserts but you can only eat a tiny bit, which is no bad thing. Alongside, we were served a selection of drinks, including homemade Ayran – yoghurt, salt and water served in a

traditional metal tankard – and several fresh juices. My favourite was an amazing strawberry slushy concoction, which definitely shouldn’t be missed.

As our visit came to an end, we promised to return to try the rest of the extensive menu and I will certainly be going back for another helping of the delicious mixed appetisers. I highly recommend you give them a try. ✤

OPT FOR AUTUMN

As we leave behind the summer heat and slowly transition into autumn, various destinations start to transform into the ideal spot for a dream holiday.

Autumn easily makes a strong argument for being the perfect time to vacation - whether it’s the sight of landscapes shimmering in pleasing colours, the cooler temperatures making exploring more comfortable, hiking, biking or sightseeing.

Also, fewer crowds in popular destinations allow for a more relaxed experience, making it a bit easier to enjoy attractions and local culture.

Check out these stunning locations for the perfect autumn holiday!

The Berkshires (Western Massachusetts), USA

The Berkshires offer an unforgettable getaway in autumn, when the region’s scenic beauty comes alive as the leaves transform into brilliant shades of orange, red and gold. The crisp air invites visitors to get lost in New England’s autumn foliage and explore a wide variety of outdoor activities. The adventurous ones can head out on some of the most wonderful hiking trails, such as those in Natural Bridge State Park, home to the only natural white marble arch in North America created from glacial erosion, The Cascades Trail, boasting a pretty cascading waterfall at the end, and Mount Greylock, its summit stands at an elevation of 1,064 metres – the highest point in Massachusetts,

offering stunning views. And don’t forget to visit the highest waterfall in Massachusetts at Bash Bish Falls or just drive around quaint roads with picturesque views and well-marked scenic vistas along the way. Art lovers can visit the Norman Rockwell Museum and enjoy his large collection of original art. This is also the perfect time to catch entertaining performances at the Berkshire Theatre Group or attend an exciting concert at Tanglewood, where music fills the air amidst the autumn colours. Take this opportunity to enjoy local farmers’ markets that showcase seasonal produce and provide a taste of the harvest, as well as savour regional specialities or experience the great farm-to-table food scene.

Montréal, Canada

Montréal is a year-round destination but some might say it’s at its charming best during the autumn months. Visiting here during this time is a truly enchanting experience, as the city transforms into a canvas of stunning yellow, crimson and orange. Immerse yourself in the beautiful cobblestone streets of Old Montréal that are lined with historic buildings and then continue strolling along the banks of the St. Lawrence River. Make sure to spend time at Mount Royal Park, a beautiful green space in the heart of the city, offering stunning panoramic views of the city’s skyline that’s especially beautiful when the autumn foliage is at its peak. Plan a hike here or take a leisurely walk along its many trails that allow for a perfect escape from the urban bustle. Visit the Notre-Dame Basilica, a masterpiece

of Gothic Revival architecture (famous for its stunning stained-glass windows). Then enjoy sipping on a warm beverage at a cosy café along Place Jacques-Cartier or tasting local specialities like poutine or tourtière, especially at the many food festivals that pop up during this time of the year. For those who appreciate art and culture, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts hosts various exhibitions that attract visitors year-round. Autumn also features cultural events at the Montreal Science Centre that offers interactive experiences for all ages. Lastly, attending an outdoor market, such as the Jean-Talon Market, is a fantastic way to try and experience the local life.

Seoul, South Korea

The pleasant and refreshingly cooler weather coupled with clear blue skies and the alluring tapestry of autumn colours make spending this season in Seoul a truly magical experience. One of the best activities during this time is visiting Namsan Park, the largest park in Seoul, which offers an awe-inspiring combination of scenic trails, cultural attractions and stunning panoramic views of the city. Those that don’t want to hike can also take the bus or cable car directly to the top of the mountain. Another must-visit location is the Changdeokgung Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which is one of the most well-preserved royal palaces from the Joseon Dynasty.

Also, the Biwon (or Secret Garden) to the rear of the palace complex is a true highlight owing to its serene atmosphere and exquisite landscaping. Guided tours here offer deeper insights into the rich history of the site. Additionally, the city’s numerous parks, such as Seoul Forest and Hangang Park, are absolutely worth the visit in autumn, as they transform into ideal spots for picnics, bike rides or just simply soaking in the mesmerising atmosphere. A day trip to Nami Island (an iconic setting for many famous K-Dramas) is a must do! Also, make sure to try seasonal treats like hotteok (sweet pancakes) from street vendors, enjoy a warm bowl of tteokguk (rice cake soup) at a cosy restaurant or visit the bustling Gwangjang Market, where you can savour delicious seasonal street food.

The Highlands, Scotland

The Scottish Highlands are a mountainous region encompassing northwest Scotland and make an ideal vacation destination in autumn. For those seeking relaxation, charming bed-and-breakfasts and cosy inns offer inviting retreats. But in all honesty, one of the best activities during this season here is hiking. The arduous trails, such as the West Highland Way and the routes around Glencoe, offer sufficient challenge, along with breathtaking scenic views of the changing foliage and rugged mountains. These locations provide hikes which are perfect for both seasoned hikers and casual walkers. Wildlife watching is another highlight, as autumn is an excellent time to spot the red deer during the rutting season, particularly in places like Cairngorms National Park. For cultural experiences, the Highlands are rich in history with ancient castles like Eilean Donan and Urquhart Castle providing a glimpse into Scotland’s storied past. Local festivals offer plenty of fun activities, such as the Loch & Land Festival 2024, adding to the seasonal charm. Autumn is also the ideal time to sample hearty dishes made from local ingredients at cosy pubs and restaurants.

Whether you’re hiking through picturesque locations, exploring markets and indulging in local delights or simply enjoying the serene beauty that embraces cities during this season, autumn most definitely offers a unique and enchanting backdrop for a truly memorable vacation. ✤

A HOME AWAY FROM HOME

A warm welcome, great facilities and an enviable view awaited Apple Sharma as she experienced an enjoyable weekend stay at the

Onyx Rotana.

The island’s newest five-star property, Onyx Rotana, which opened its doors in July 2024, has taken Bahrain’s burgeoning hospitality scene to another level. Standing proud in the Bahrain Bay area with incredible waterfront views, the hotel’s shiny new façade beckons visitors from near and far and is fast becoming a popular luxury destination, especially with our neighbouring GCC residents. With my bags packed and excitement building, I headed off to this stunning new property, eager to experience its many offerings.

The Welcome

As we stepped into the hotel, the large lobby was buzzing with activity as we waited to check-in. Among the things that instantly impressed us about the expansive space were the polished marbled surfaces and high ceilings, which exude an air of modern yet serene elegance. The entire lobby is adorned with large ornamental olive trees and lush green plants, complemented by neutral tones and brushed gold accents. Sunlight streams through the vast windows and a central seating area with plush, curved green sofas and beige armchairs offers a comfortable spot for relaxation. The overall design is a tasteful blend of contemporary chic with subtle opulence, creating a welcoming and refined atmosphere. After a seamless check-in, we made our way to our room on the 28th floor. As we passed the lobby corridor, I noticed glass window displays with a selection of gorgeous heels, handbags and accessories from Saks Fifth Avenue – a perfect little enticement for a shopping spree at City Centre Bahrain mall, which is within minutes’ reach from the hotel. That’s another plus for the property; its close proximity to both the financial district and the shopping malls makes it an ideal destination for business and leisure travellers alike.

The Suite

Our room, aptly named Panoramic Bay View Suite, was a slice of contemporary elegance spread over 54sq/m. Walking into the space felt like entering a luxury city apartment rather than a hotel room – an ambience that was both chic and homely. Soft beige and green tones decorated the living area, which featured a sleek kitchenette, complete with a refrigerator, microwave, coffee machine and cooking hobs. Whether you’re staying for a night or an extended visit, this space offers everything you need for comfort and convenience. A curved beige sofa bed invited us to sink in, while a large flat-screen TV separated the living area from the bedroom, a clever touch that enhanced the suite’s sense of space and privacy. The bedroom itself was nothing short of tranquil, centred around a plush king-size bed adorned with crisp white linens that called out for a good night’s sleep. Above the bed hung an abstract green art piece, while in the corner was a handy dressing table and large mirror. The real showstopper, however, was the private balcony with its breathtaking panoramic view of Bahrain Bay – easily one of

the best vantage points in the city.

The bathroom continued the theme of refined luxury, with beige marble finishes, a spacious rain shower and ambient lighting from minimalist pendant lamps on either side of the mirror. Premium L'Occitane toiletries, neatly arranged towels and small touches like flower arrangements added to the sense of comfort and sophistication.

No sooner had we settled in than there was a knock on the door – room service had arrived with a beautiful fruit basket and a delicate assortment of petits fours, the perfect welcome gift.

Exploring The Facilities

After freshening up, we met with Marcel Kaouk, the Front Office Manager, who offered us a tour of the hotel’s facilities. Our first stop was the GY floor (sixth floor), which is home to the shared amenities for both hotel guests and residents of the Onyx Residences by Rotana.

Next, we headed to the Citrine Lounge, an inviting space with plush seating and an indoor garden theme. The eatery’s cosy atmosphere makes it the perfect spot to enjoy afternoon tea or a light snack. Just beyond the lounge is the outdoor pool area, which, to my surprise, featured an artificial beach complete with soft sand. This unique setup added a resort-like feel, with an infinity pool that seemed to stretch right into the sea. I couldn’t wait to return later to unwind with a quick swim!

We also explored the temperature-controlled indoor pool,

sauna and steam rooms. I was thrilled to learn that the hotel’s full-service spa will open early next year on the 37th floor. Next up was the Health Club, a must for fitness enthusiasts. The state-of-the-art equipment, including modern machines and free weights, ensures there’s something for everyone. For those seeking privacy, a female-only area upstairs is equally impressive.

Before concluding our tour, we visited the Entertainment Zone. This lively space is perfect for families or groups of friends, with gaming rooms, billiards, a kids’ play area and even a karaoke room. For those on business, the co-working spaces and well-equipped meeting rooms provide everything needed for a productive stay.

Gym & Pool

Following our tour, I swiftly returned to the Health Club for a quick workout. I couldn’t help but admire how thoughtfully the gym is designed. Floor-to-ceiling windows allow natural light to pour in, while greenery hanging from the ceiling adds a touch of nature. With the spectacular view of the infinity pool and the sea, my treadmill session was a joy and I spent a good hour there.

With the sun setting, it was the perfect time to have a dip in the inviting pool outside. The peaceful ambience, framed by palm trees and modern cabanas, was just what I needed to rejuvenate. The infinity pool offers stunning vistas of the

sea and the city skyline and the pool bar, located in a quiet corner, serves signature mocktails and light bites.

Exceptional Dining

As evening approached, we eagerly made our way to Garnet Restaurant for dinner. This Mediterranean-inspired outlet, on the lobby level, combines earthy tones and soft lighting for an intimate dining experience. I was particularly taken by its design – one area features an illuminated marble bar that caught my eye, while a smaller, cosier section is centred around a beautiful ornamental tree.

The service was impeccable, with our friendly waitress, Juvil, making sure we were well looked after. Starting with mocktails, the Rosemary Blueberry Smash stood out, a delicious blend of blueberry purée, honey and lemon juice.

For starters, we tried the Burrata, accompanied with a lovely combination of Heirloom tomatoes, pea purée and truffle crisps, as well as the Barley and Baby Spinach Salad, a refreshing dish with semi-dried tomatoes, beetroot pesto, chargrilled courgettes and toasted pumpkin seeds. We also couldn’t resist the hearty Soupe A L'Oignon (French onion soup), flavoured with beef jus and served with cheese croutons.

For mains, the Baby Chicken Freekeh was a standout – tender, pan-seared chicken was served on a bed of fluffy freekeh and garnished with toasted almonds. We also enjoyed the Roasted Salmon Filet, accompanied by parsley carnaroli risotto and crispy fennel shavings. As a veggie option, we sampled saffron risotto with asparagus, which was rich, creamy and perfectly cooked. We ended the meal on a sweet note, with a warm Apple Crumble and a decadent Chocolate Fondant, the perfect conclusion to a lovely evening.

A Delightful Start

The next morning, we returned to Garnet Restaurant for breakfast, eager to see what the buffet had in store. The wide selection catered to every possible preference, from a live waffle and pancake station to made-to-order eggs and freshly baked pastries. There were also plenty of Arabic breakfast staples like balaleet and foul medames, as well as healthy options such as fresh fruit and a makeyour-own salad station. The attention to detail was evident throughout, with special cute crockery for children adding a thoughtful touch.

After a hearty breakfast, I felt ready to take on the day, albeit a little sad that our stay was coming to an end.

Onyx Rotana had exceeded every expectation. From the sophisticated yet relaxed ambience of the suite to the impressive facilities and dining options, every detail of this hotel makes it a destination worth visiting again – be it for business, leisure or a little of both. ✤

COOL, REBELLIOUS VIBES

Capturing the unique energy of one of the world’s chicest cities, the latest collection from Philippe Model Paris is a study in funky, eclectic style.

Tremblez bourgeois! (an exhortation that the middle class should tremble or fear) is spelled out in bold red spray paint on a pristine Parisian wall – an image indicative of the unique energy of a city that luxuriates in true multiculturalism and multiple contrasts over a solid mantle of classicism. It’s a new beginning for the brand led by the creative vision of Tuomas Merikoski. The Finn has long been adopted by Paris, as part of the global creative community that renders the city vibrant and pulsating, an energy he is injecting at Philippe Model Paris. The French capital is the beating heart of this new interpretation of the Philippe Model ethos. An open and inclusive Paris: one of artists, breakdancers, skaters and classy passersby. The way they dress and the pieces they wear, are the expression of their personality, the language they speak.

A postmodern take on classicism, with bold new Big MODEL trainers to match, tailoring, shirting and knitwear unite men’s and womenswear. Regular seeming shapes are exaggerated with bold volumes and interesting surfaces and finishes. Sustainable credentials are introduced with dirt treatments on some of the fabrics and a taste for imperfection adds a zest life.

The expression is urban, unfazed, direct, undiluted and with a tongue-in-cheek twist. The word model recurs in bold capitals as a statement, coupled with fabric patterns that impart an almost retro feel when coupled with the thick-framed glasses, scarves and oversized jewellery featured in this season’s campaign. Far from being formulaic, the new identity is playful, energetic and easy, giving the individual the tools to shine. ✤

HOLLYWOOD CALLS!

Flying the flag for Bahrain on the international stage, writer producer and director, Mohamed Fareed, makes his directorial debut with Convoluted, due to be premiered this month at the 2024 Screamfest Horror Film Festival in Los Angeles, California, US.

Just in time for Halloween, Mohamed talks cinema with Apple Sharma and shares his inspiration behind the film, his passion for the industry and his favourite directors!

Could you share your film journey and tell us what drew you to this industry?

My filmmaking journey ignited through my love for movies, which I shared on Instagram and YouTube. That passion connected me with Bahraini filmmaker, Ahmed Akbar, and from the moment we met, I knew I wanted to be part of something bigger. I told him, "If you're making a film, I need to be there." Together, we co-wrote my first short, Window, for the Bahraini film festival ‘Made with Passion’. That spark led me to Mohamed Fakhro and Blu Steel Films, where I took the leap, leaving my job to dive fully into filmmaking. I produced seven shorts, directed one and found my true calling – telling stories that reflect my soul.

Congratulations on your film Convoluted being selected for the Screamfest Horror Film Festival in LA. When is the screening and how does it feel to represent Bahrain on the global stage?

Thank you! It feels absolutely surreal – never did I imagine being accepted, especially with such fierce competition. I’m beyond thrilled to have my film selected for an international festival of this calibre. It’s an honour and I’m proud to represent Bahrain, showing that we have talented horror and genre filmmakers. The festival runs from October 8 to 17 and my film will screen on October 13. I can't wait to share this journey and put Bahraini cinema on the map!

What was the inspiration behind Convoluted and what drew you to the horror genre?

In August 2021, I had COVID and was seriously ill. Fear

took over and, one night, I had a nightmare that stayed with me. Once I recovered, I wrote it down and that nightmare became the foundation for my film. Convoluted represents my deepest fear – my absolute worst nightmare. What draws me to horror films is that fear reminds me I’m alive. In those terrifying moments, you feel a raw instinct to survive, to feel safe. It may sound strange but that’s my personal connection to horror – it’s a reminder of life itself.

Who's your favourite director and why?

That’s a tough one but I’d choose Denis Villeneuve and Robert Eggers. Denis has an incredible ability to craft slow-burn stories that draw you in completely. His versatility spans drama, sci-fi, action and psychological thrillers and his work on Blade Runner 2049 – one of my all-time favourites – shows his mastery. Robert Eggers, on the other hand, is a genius in horror folktales. He creates haunting, immersive atmospheres, like in The Witch, which terrified me, or The Lighthouse, which left me questioning everything. And The Northman is simply epic. Both directors deeply inspire me with their storytelling craft.

You also do film reviews on your Instagram account (@ movie.convo). How did you get started and how do you choose which films to review?

I started back in 2017, pushed by my cousin to open a page and share my passion for movies. Everyone who knows me will tell you – I love movies and they’re always my go-to conversation starter. Every week, I review new releases and dive into classic films that have shaped my love for

Ebrahim

cinema. I also create top 10 lists across different genres, hoping to inspire my followers to explore older films and broaden their cinematic horizons. Sharing my passion for film has been an incredible journey and I love connecting with others through it.

What's in the pipeline? Are you working on anything special?

I have a couple of short films in the works but after directing Convoluted, I'm ready for a bigger challenge. I’m planning to direct my first feature film, which is currently in development. I know it won’t be easy – getting funding for a short film is tough, let alone a feature – but I’m ready to push beyond those obstacles. I live by the motto, ‘Don’t limit your challenges, challenge your limits’. That’s what keeps me moving forward, always striving for more, no matter how difficult the path.

What do you think of the film industry in Bahrain and where do you see it heading in the future?

The film industry in Bahrain is still in its early stages but it's showing promising growth. There’s a lot of talent and passion among local filmmakers and we're starting to see more diverse stories being told. With continued support and investment in the arts, I believe the industry has great potential to expand. It’s important to foster collaboration, provide resources and create more platforms for filmmakers to showcase their work. If we continue on this path, I see a bright future where Bahraini films gain greater recognition on the regional and international stage. ✤

Costing a whopping BD28,275, Convoluted is Bahrain’s most expensive short film!

Short Synopsis: After a horrific accident, a troubled drifter seeks shelter within the confines of a hedge maze. Unbeknownst to him, the worst is yet to come.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power The Penguin

Need to Know:

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is a fantasy television series based on J. R. R. Tolkien’s The History of Middle-Earth, primarily with material from the appendices of the novel The Lord of the Rings. The second season of the show depicts the rise of the Dark Lord Sauron and the subsequent creation of more Rings of Power.

Creators: J.D. Payne, Patrick McKay

Cast: Morfydd Clark, Robert Aramayo, Markella Kavenagh, Charlie Vickers, Maxim Baldry, Benjamin Walker, Ismael Cruz Córdova

Why Is It Worth Watching?

The series takes place thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. It takes viewers back to major events of MiddleEarth’s fabled Second Age, during which great powers were forged, kingdoms rose and fell, unlikely heroes were tested and the most malignant villain came into power. Even after Amazon shelled out a budget of over USD1 billion to bring this epic drama to life, season one received a mixed reception due to the showrunners’ choice to abandon a few of Tolkien’s lore points and make reckless changes to the storyline in the process. They only somewhat managed to stick the landing in the finale with Halbrand’s reveal as Sauron. The story continues as Halbrand travels to Mordor to forge the One Ring but finds himself in a dreadful situation as he’s captured and enslaved by orcs. Elsewhere, Elrond absconds with the three elven rings, leaving Galadriel and Gil-Galad to hunt him down before it’s too late for all the elves. Things are only just kicking off!

The Penguin is not just a story about power but an intriguing journey that raises questions about loyalty, betrayal and the price of ambition.”

Need to Know:

The Penguin is an American miniseries based on the DC Comics character, Penguin. The show is a spin-off from the hugely successful 2022 film, The Batman, and now explores the Penguin’s rise to power in the criminal underworld of the infamous Gotham City.

Creator: Lauren LeFranc

Cast: Colin Farrell, Cristin Milioti, Rhenzy Feliz, Deirdre O’Connell, Clancy Brown, James Madio, Joshua Bitton, Jayme Lawson, Michael Kelly

Why Is It Worth Watching?

Continuing the epic crime saga that filmmaker Matt Reeves kicked off with the global Add comma after blockbuster, The Batman, this eight-episode HBO Original limited series is now centred around Oswald 'Oz' Cobb (aka The Penguin), a character brought to life with remarkable depth by Colin Farrell.

The Penguin is set one week after the final events of the movie, which on the one hand saw the Riddler’s final scheme to partly destroy Gotham city and, on the other, saw him shake up Gotham’s criminal network by killing mob boss Carmine Falcone, leaving behind a massive power vacuum in the city’s underworld that’s now up for grabs.

The series explores Oswald’s rise within Gotham’s crime syndicate and delves into his transformation from a low-level gangster into a formidable player in the city’s dark underbelly. The story is not just about power but truly an intriguing journey that raises questions about loyalty, betrayal and the price of ambition. Penguin’s character, traditionally seen as a caricature, is given new life and showcases rare complexity in Matt’s vision that capably allows viewers to witness his struggles and motivations. This one’s most definitely worth tuning in for!

ON THE RECORD

ALTERNATIVE POP

Imaginal Disk

Imaginal Disk is the second studio album by Los Angeles-based duo, Magdalena Bay. The pair comprises Mica Tenenbaum and Matthew Lewin, who write and produce together. Since breaking onto the scene with their first album, 2021’s Mercurial World , the duo steadily became fast favourites in the underground pop circuit.

The album begins on She Looked At Me , with Mica sweetly crooning over a bed of twinkling keys that gradually goes on to burst with booming synths, making way for a dazzling chorus. Moving on to Killing Time , this sharp and contemplative synth-pop bop with lush keys boasts one of the grooviest basslines of the year.

On True Blue Interlude , Mica, in an almost hypnotising manner, introduces the idea of reaching one’s true potential through a therapeutic procedure of unknown origins, known as the ‘True Blue’ process.

This leads on perfectly to the follow-up track, Image , which unmistakably sounds like a flawless piece of pop music.

On Death & Romance , Vampire in the Corner and Watching T.V ., you gently drift from one fever dream into another. Without a doubt, this album is truly special.

ALTERNATIVE ROCK

Romance

After the major success of their 2022 album, Skinty Fia, Dublin band Fontaines D.C. achieve an adventurous, frantic and sentimental triumph on their fourth outing, Romance, that strikes an even balance between tough and tender.

Opener and title track, Romance, begins with an ominous bass and xylophone melody, accompanying lead singer Grian Chatten’s almost sullen vocals that guide you through a feeling of impending doom on the verses to a necessary respite on the choruses.

The pace then picks up on Starburster, with Grian once again delivering a compelling sing/talk performance over the track’s engaging instrumentation, an easy favourite. On follow-up, Here’s The Thing, the heavy riffs and great grooves make it instantly catchy.

The gentle strings and intricate arrangement on Desire combine with potent lyrics, “Deep they've designed you, From cradle to pyre”, to paint intriguing, vivid imagery.

In The Modern World starts off steady and then dramatically grows into a massive wall of sound that’s audaciously gripping and anthemic, another favourite. From Bug to Motorcycle Boy and even on closer Favourite, the album surprises and impresses effortlessly across its tight 37-minute runtime. An undeniably satisfying listen.

FULLY BOOKED

AUTOBIOGRAPHY

Cher: The Memoir, Part One

This is one story that really had to be written by the protagonist and, clearly, it’s too good a tale for just one volume.

What We’re (Still) Talking About

Dog's Dinner of a Debate

Ah, the great American political debate (Yes, we’ve tried to restrain ourselves about commenting on it but who’re we kidding – this stuff is too good to let go!). A place for dignified discourse, right? Well, not quite. The Trump-Harris face-off last month spiralled into the surreal with a bizarre detour into the dietary habits of immigrants – according to Trump, they’re eating “cats and dogs.” Yes, you read that correctly! As expected, it didn’t take long for the internet to pounce, with memes exploding faster than you can say “pet-friendly policies.” The social media

backlash has been nothing short of epic, with AI-generated images of cats and dogs supporting Trump and hashtag #PetsForTrump trending. Even The Kiffness, the viral musician known for his hilarious parodies (we love him), joined in the fun with a catchy tune about Fluffy and Fido becoming dinner. But while the internet laughed, the bigger issue was how quickly rumours morph into fact on some corners of the web. It’s a wild reminder that we live in an age where misinformation spreads faster than your uncle’s conspiracy theories. So, next time you hear something outrageous, maybe fact-check before starting a pet rescue mission.

Once in a Blue (Second) Moon The AI Diet Craze

Just when you thought 2024 couldn’t get any weirder, Earth’s got a new sidekick – well, sort of. In September, astronomers announced that our planet is getting a temporary second moon. Yep, that’s right, but don’t go expecting lunar eclipses with a plus-one anytime soon. Affectionately named, 2024 PT5, the so-called ‘mini-moon’ is a small asteroid temporarily caught in Earth’s orbit, kind of like a cosmic hitchhiker just passing through.

Naturally, the internet is having a field day. Some claimed it to be a sign from

above and a symbol of good luck, while others joked that Mercury in retrograde was calling in reinforcements. Astrologers, of course, were quick to weigh in, predicting everything from double the emotional baggage to an extra dose of moon-fuelled chaos in our daily lives.

As cool as it is to have a second moon, we’re holding out for one thing: if this new moon could influence the tides, can it also wipe out our work emails or at least tack on a few extra days to the weekend?

Once upon a time, we thought AI would be all about flying cars and robot butlers. But it turns out the robots are starting with our dinner plates. The latest diet trend sweeping social media isn’t a keto reboot or intermittent fasting 2.0, but AI-generated meal plans. Yep, folks are now asking ChatGPT what they should eat to shed those extra pounds. And you thought your fitness app was judgmental. A recent experiment had a food writer for The Guardian test out AI-generated recipes, and let’s just say, the results were… questionable. The menu included

culinary gems like shepherd’s pie sushi, an audacious Thai green curry lasagna and the ever-popular Sri Lankan currywurst curry. The highlight?

A Japanese hotpot that the writer labelled one of the most disgusting meals he’s ever eaten. “My children barely touch it, and I can see betrayal in their eyes,” he lamented. While we’re all for trying new things, letting a chatbot decide what’s for dinner feels like a disaster waiting to happen. One supermarket AI meal planner even suggested a recipe that would create chlorine gas – yikes! Our suggestion? Embrace your inner chef and leave the algorithms out of the kitchen!
