LISTEN UP
The colourful and charming country of India is portrayed through the contrasting works of four photographers in a new exhibition at Bahrain National Museum. Organised in collaboration with the TASVEER foundation, India Through The Lens opened in mid-September to the general public and features photographs by Jyotti Bhatt, T.S. Saytan, Maimouna Guerresi and Karen Knorr. The 20th century work of Jyotti Batt and TS Satyan communicates the life of the Indian populous post independence - from street scenes to historic events, from the common man to portraits of prominent figures. The 21st century work of Karen Knorr and Maimouna Guerresi delves deeper than this documentary representation of the country, by using staged events, manipulations and constructions to explore the religious, cultural and visual heritage of India. This exhibition is not only for those into photography, but for those who would like an insight into this diverse nation’s rich history and unique cultural and aesthetic identity.

Turkey The Bahraini-based Junaid perfumes took part in the Beauty Eurasia Exhibition in Istanbul. Spread across three days, they displayed fragrances, oils and incense burners. This event is held every year from the past ten years and is one of the largest perfumes and cosmetics fair with almost 500 companies taking part from across the globe. The range of products displayed in this exhibition varies from hair care, facial care and body care to chemical cure such as skin whitening agents, sunscreens, fitness gears and equipments.
Shop owners keep on alert! Three thugs disguised as customers robbed a cold store in Hoora. Entering and asking for help, as the cashier moved towards the fridge to assist them, the three carried out the pre-meditated offence and stole a cash box with BD200 in it, and BD800 worth of phone cards, before fleeing in a grey Nissan. We hate these crimes that can turn dangerous very quickly and affect someone’s livelihood, so let’s hope the culprits are caught and justice is served!

Almost any car in Moscow will stop and take you to your destination for the right price. You can get on the street, hail down a car and name your price, these taxis are known as ‘gypsy cabs’. There are official taxis too that hotels can help arrange for you.
The metro is the quickest, easiest, and cheapest way of getting around Moscow; you’ll rarely wait three minutes for the next train and a multi-ride ticket will save the hassle of queuing at ticket booths. As a bonus, Moscow’s metro stations are grand attractions in themselves!
If you’re staying in a central location close to Red Square, it might serve you well to put on some comfy walking shoes and head for sightseeing on foot – you might just find some hidden gems on the way!

above two seas
He’s a seasoned photographer who has called Bahrain home for many years; so it’s only fitting that Andrew Weaver’s career, naturally, led to producing a book showcasing the country’s beauty and diversity. FACT’s Shabana Adam sat down with the man behind the lens to learn more about his latest project, his camera skills, and the thrilling experience of capturing Bahrain from a helicopter…
fact magazine .69
ARTS
W 70. fact magazine
hen it comes to photography talk, I am definitely no expert; my point-and-shoot friend is the good old iPhone and I happen to be particularly skilled in selecting the perfect instagram effect. However, being somewhat of an avid shutterbug, I was looking forward to sitting down with photographer-extraordinaire Andrew Weaver, in the hopes of picking up a few pointers and learning more about his beautiful new book Above Two Seas. I meet Andrew at what can quite rightly be called his local, CafĂŠ Lilou in Adliya, close to both his home and studio in the thriving Block 338 area (an apt neighbourhood for his creative talent). Handing me a copy of Above Two Seas, a project that was two years
in-the-making, I’m surprised to see how thick the book is and the stunning variety of photographs inside – really, this is all Bahrain?! Andrew explains: “With it being such a small country, I think most people would wonder if there’s enough subject matter to actually shoot and put in a rather large book – actually there is. It’s just that you have to be lucky enough to get up in a helicopter! “I think, generally, in Bahrain, there’s a lot more going on than people realise,” he says. “But also in terms of geography – it’s made up of more than 50 islands and interesting wildlife areas, so this is all part of surprising people with what there is here.” The book itself is divided up into four sections; Above the Skyline, which includes images of Bahrain’s architecture, infrastructure, city, streets, and neighbourhoods; Over the Sea, with photographs of fishing, islands, watersports, and marine life; Beyond The City, a collection of pictures showing Bahrain’s communities, villages, landscapes, industry, and coastline; and lastly, Out of the
Sand, celebrating the desert, and wildlife of Bahrain. How’s that for plenty of subject matter? I find out that Andrew uses a pretty standard SLR – the Nikon D3X – for his photography, yet the images in ‘Above Two Seas’ carry the pristine qualities of a much complex camera. His secret? Being harnessed to the side of a helicopter. “I would hang out on the edge of the aircraft and after that it was all point and shoot,” Andrew says. “I don’t change lens very much at all and I don’t manipulate my images. The hardest part of it all was actually getting up in the air! “Of course, every picture in any book is edited to some respect,” he admits. “I edit to brightness, contrast areas in a picture where if fact magazine

Not only does he remember – he still has both! “My first decent camera was a Praktica,” he tells me. “It was about £50, big and chunky, and I really thought that was cool. Photo wise, I remember taking a shot in my teens of a red rose in a milk bottle, and it had snowed, so there was snow on the rose. I took it for my mum and that was the first picture I put in a frame. I didn’t think then that I could make a career of it, but I thought the shot was quite good,” he laughs. He’s come a long way from shooting with a Praktika and Above Two Seas has clearly been a labour of love for Andrew. Not only does this book represent the mesmerising landscape of Bahrain, but it also celebrates a photographer whose daring and dedicated approach to photography has well and truly paid off. 74.

Foxcatcher What’s it about: Based on the true story of Olympic gold-medalist wrestler Mark Schultz, this is an insight into the wrestler’s relationship with his eccentric multi-millionaire sponsor John du Pont and celebrated wrestling brother Dave Schultz, and the unlikely circumstances surrounding their desperation for greatness. Director: Bennett Miller Cast: Steve Carell, Channing Tatum, Mark Ruffalo
Highlights “What Bennett Miller (who gave us Moneyball) has created here is a psychological drama of doubt, depression and destruction. ”
Dracula Untold What’s it about: It’s the origin story of the man who becomes Dracula (played by the uber-handsome Luke Evans) and we just can’t wait to see what some might call a ‘flawed hero’ – a man on a mission to save his family from his enemies. He’s driven to darkness in a bid to keep his loved-ones safe, and soon a monster is born. And, as we know all too well, every choice has its consequences and we’re about to find out what Dracula’s are…
Foxcatcher
Why it’s worth watching? In an ordinary world, having Channing Tatum, Mark Ruffalo and Steve Carell co-starring in a wrestling film would have been something akin to a boisterous college comedy packed with frat-humour and guest appearances from the likes of Seth Rogan, Jonah Hill and Dave Franco. This couldn’t be further from that. Enters Foxcatcher, an incredibly poignant and positively harrowing story about two men desperate for greatness that they’ll possibly never achieve. The Oscar buzz surrounding the Foxcatcher has gone from muffled whispers to damn near deafening in the last few weeks, thanks to hugely positive reviews from critics and audiences at film festivals in Toronto, Cannes and Telluride. What Bennett Miller (who gave us Moneyball) has created here is a psychological drama of doubt, depression and destruction. And it’s not just this gut-wrenching story that’s winning fans – it’s the three astounding on-screen performances from the jaw-clenching Channing Tatum, the dead-eyed Steve Carell and the tough-faced Mark Ruffalo. The trailer gives us a serious case of the heebie-jeebies. It’s a definite Oscar player!

“When it comes to cinematic experience, think the ferocity of Braveheart meets the epic world of Gladiator and the heroics of 300” Director: Gary Shore Cast: Luke Evans, Dominic Cooper, Samantha Barks, Sarah Gadon Why it’s worth watching? Firstly, how awesome is it that Luke Evans is playing the lead? His string of starring roles and reliable performances in popcorn films like Clash of the Titans and Fast & Furious 6, make him a great choice for this vampire reboot. The chilling tagline ‘Every Bloodline has a Beginning’ really embodies the story telling in Dracula Untold. When it comes to cinematic experience, think the ferocity of Braveheart meets the epic world of Gladiator and the heroics of 300. Teamed with great dramatic music and an already existing legion of the vampiregenre fans, Dracula Untold has a lot to live up to, but shows huge potential for success.

Sucker
By Charli XCX
We LOVE young stars who, when it comes
to musicality, break all the rules! Meet Charli XCX, the English singer-songwriter who’s played an important part in some major hits. Did you know that she penned and featured on Icona Pop’s I Love It and currently holds two chart-positions with a feature on Iggy Azalea’s inescapable hit Fancy, and her very own single Boom Clap (from The Fault in Our Stars?). Oh, and did we mention, the Hertfordshire-born beauty is finally dropping her sophomore studio album Sucker this month! It features pop gems like the aptly titled Break The Rules, a song with a snappy synth melody and well-crafted hooks to make you lock the bedroom door and dance around in your underwear! Watch out for the catchy beats on Need Your Love featuring Vampire Weekend’s Rostam Batmanglij, and the punk-sounds of London Queen. Charli (real name Charlotte Emma Aitchison) has been described as having a moody yet catchy neon goth sound (whatever that means!). With heavyweight producers like StarGate pitching in for this 13-track album, we’re convinced, that combined with Charli’s rabble-rousing voice, it’s going to have bags of personality.

EXPERIMENTAL HIPHOP/ELECTRONIC
You’re Dead By Flying Lotus
When an artist goes to such great lengths as to have an original illustration by Shintaro Kago for each track on their album, that’s when you know their creative process is a serious, and rather special, one. Meet Flying Lotus (aka Steven Ellison), one of the most innovative and exciting producers in hip-hop today, and believe it or not, You’re Dead is his fifth album, BUT what makes this one different is the big-league guest appearances; Kendrick Lamar, Snoop Dogg, Herbie Hancock and Captain Murphy (aka Flying Lotus’ rapping alter ego). The 19-track record opens with a jazz workout that sets the pace for a rollercoaster ride through hip-hop at its most fluid and inventive form. Don’t forget the fixation with death in tracks like Cold Dead, Eyes Above, Descent into Madeness, and Your Potential/The Beyond to name but a few of the bold song titles. Still, in all its morbidity is going to surprise the loyal underground fans, and probably entertain new ones.

The new C Class boasts levels of gadgetry unparalleled in its class, with new suspension technology and a raft of new safety features as standard. The new styling of the C Class combines streamlined elegance with muscular lines to create a presence that’s both beautiful and commanding. There are three trim variants to choose from, but the AMG Line’s exterior is, in our opinion, the handsomest of the bunch, but then it would be to petrol heads. A special AMG front apron with a chrome accented splitter and the AMG diffuser-look rear apron really make the C Class look like it means business. Mercedes interiors currently have a much more organic feel to them than those of BMW or Audi, who have both gone for a more modern, technological look to their interiors. The Mercedes is all flowing curves, natural surfaces and classic shapes to things
like the AC vents and switches. Combined with ambient lighting that boasts a selection of three different colours – blue, white or amber – and you have a very cosy interior that feels like being wrapped in a warm cocoon. The AMG trim variant features figure hugging sports seats upholstered in ARTICO leather and brushed stainless steel sports pedals to round off the sporting feel. Having said all that, the interior does take some getting used to for those who aren’t familiar with Mercedes-Benz vehicles, as they seem to do everything differently from everyone else. For example, you’ll look for the gearshift for a while until you find it’s the right-hand side steering wheel stalk. This also means that the windscreen wipers, indicators and high-beam controls are all on the left hand stalk, which can be confusing at first. And then there is the touch pad/ rotating knob combination user interface
control. It’s not the most intuitive we’ve ever seen, and can be quite fiddly until you’ve figured it out. We recommend you do this before you set off! As for the driving experience, it is every bit as good as you’d expect from a Merc. The 2.0l inline-four cylinder engine puts out an impressive amount of power for its size, with an output of 184hp and 300Nm of torque. It doesn’t sound like a great deal, but a sprightly 0-100km/h time of 7.3 seconds and a smooth and constant power delivery through the 7G-Tronic Plus automatic transmission makes the C 200 punch well above its weight in terms of engine size. You won’t be complaining about the pace at any point! Ride comfort is, is you’d expect, absolutely sublime. There is almost zero road noise transmitted into the passenger cabin, and the ride is smooth and refined. Despite this, the C Class AMG Line
also manages superb levels of agility and handling thanks to the lowered sports suspension and sports Direct-Steer system. The ride stiffness and engine response can all be calibrated through the vehicle’s settings according to your mood, ranging from relaxed to mentalist! But what always makes a Mercedes stand out is the technology, and the C Class is no exception. From the head-up display to the AIRMATIC suspension (an optional extra, but worth it), Adaptive Highbeam Assist (to avoid blinding other drivers), Attention Assist, Active Lane Keeping/Blind Spot/Collision Prevention Assi… basically, a whole bunch of ‘Assists’ make the 2015 C Class the safest it has ever been by a long shot. It’s all these incredible technologies that really set the C Class apart in a highly competitive segment. Take it for a drive and see for yourself!

The Beetle A more athletic profile and stance and a raft of standard performance features have totally changed the attitude of the Beetle we all knew. It’s less hippy, more hip urban retro chic…
84. fact magazine
Perhaps the two most telling aspects of where VW are going with the new Beetle are the 2.0l TSi turbo-charged engine complete with a turbo pressure gauge on the dashboard and the six-speed DSG gearbox which come as standard. And then there is the more streamlined shape, the standard spoiler and the 19-inch low-profile alloys (standard on the SEL spec). And finally, there’s the fact that they’ve done away with the flower vase on the dashboard, all of which point to VW moving the Beetle away from its hippy flower-power associations and more into a young, urban sport identity. A very retro interior vibe comes courtesy of exterior body colour panels that hark back to the days when patches of the exterior body shell were visible inside the car. Having said that, you still get that high-quality modern VW feel courtesy of the leather-wrapped steering wheel with phone and stereo controls and the multi-function display with CD, Mp3 and USB connectivity, which puts sound out through Fender speakers (yes, the guitar company, they now make in-car audio apparently). Another nice touch is the cruise control which comes as standard on all models.
Strangely, even though the Beetle has become more athletic, the steering wheel is still quite large and round, harking back to Beetles of yore, which again creates a weird clash of modern and retro. To drive, the new Beetle is a whole lot of fun. The superb 210hp 2.0l turbo-charged four-pot is an absolute blast, propelling the Beetle along with a racy growl that’ll leave you smiling as you hit 100km/h in a decent 7.3 seconds. And the handling, as you’d expect from a VW, is also fantastic, staying flat and poised during quick cornering with superb levels of grip. All this combined with the lightning fast changes from the DSG gearbox make for a truly compelling driving experience. One area the Beetle is surprisingly let down in is interior cabin noise, and it isn’t the road noise that’s the problem. At highway speeds the wind noise from the sunroof becomes a real annoyance after a while, which is a design flaw you shouldn’t expect from a VW. Thankfully, we were able to drown it out with the excellent sound quality from the Fender audio system!
VW have totally repositioned the new 2015 Beetle, but we just can’t quite seem to pinpoint exactly which position they were going for! On one hand, you have the fun-loving retro hippy vibe of the Beetle styling, and on the other you have a sportier profile, the growling beast of an engine, DSG gearbox and lively handling. While this blending of retro chic and modern sportiness has led to a mildly confused identity for the new Beetle, no one can deny that this is a truly fun car – a Beetle for the iPhone generation, no doubt about it!

Traditional Dress Bedouin Men
Bedouin women
The traditional basic dress for Bedouin men is a thobe, now commonly known as Kandura or Dishdash. Made of white cotton to the ankle, with long sleeves, and a collar that varies by region but usually included a button or tassel, or both.
Bedouin Outerwear Over the tob a striped kibr open down front with belt and/or shoulder straps is worn. For nonmanual workers a redan is worn, reinforcing their leisure status. Beduoin men would frequently carry knives, rifles and ammunition.
Bisht Arabs usually wore a Bisht over their robe in order to add glamour to special occasions. Bisht is a loose floor length or sometimes a little shorter coat, with embroidered edges. It signifies religious position, social status or wealth.
96. fact magazine
The basic dress for Bedouin women was an over-sized Abaya. This loose-fitted cloak-dress came in different colours, with embroidery along the seams, the hem, and the neck. Brightly coloured and patterned dresses (fustan) were worn underneath.
Bedouin Headwear Headwear for most Bedouin men is a keffiyah, more commonly known as a Guthra, and held in place with an egal of camel wool. Some men wore the Amamah, a tightly wrapped turban that represented religious seniority.
Bedouin Jewellery Women wear a range of jewellery including, necklaces, rings, anklets and bracelets, often hollow and filled with stones.
Gafaaz Gafaaz is a literal translation of gloves. Women wear Gafaaz to ensure that their hand is completely covered. Gafaaz was predominant in olden days; very few conventional women still wear it.
Bedouin Burqa The Bedouin Burqa varies from place to place with Bedouin women. In the north the veils came in a range of masks, whilst in the Levant they are dark blue or black using a shambar, a tube that encloses the head and neck. In the Sinai desert the burqas are formed by rows of coins!
Contemporary Dress Modern Men
modern women
Arab men have blended traditional wear with modern trends, still staying true to the culture of their homelands. Now, high-end Thobes are available. They are exclusively tailormade, and contain delicate embellishments, normally at the bottom of the sleeves.
Guthra This is the headscarf worn by men to cover their head. Putting a trendy touch to it, they style it differently to suit the occasion. Some wearers wrap the Guthra into a turban, while others wear it loosely draped around the back and shoulders. It’s usually made of white cotton and used differently in accordance with the wearer’s home country.
Arab women have gone contemporary with their traditional dress. In terms of the design, colour and style, they have taken it up a notch adding glam. With more fitted Abayas and hijab’s, they have welcomed more modern, western style with open arms.
Bisht Modern Arab men are not afraid of wearing better-fitted Thobes and many put on an embellished Bisht, which adds colour and style to their look. The colour of the Bisht depends on the colour of the thobe and is generally chosen for contrast.
Abaya The loose style black abayas have almost been replaced with modern-style ones. There is an enormous choice, which includes embellished, lacestyle, animal print, belted-sequin and jacket style abayas (to name a few). These chic styles are made by highend designers who experiment to bring out uber-trendy products to please.
Hijab Breaking the stereotypical designs and drapes of an ethnic hijab, Arab women have established newer styles and replacements for hijab. The cool knots on the head with a scarf is trendy and adds a style statement to the look with western outfits as well.

Occasional bursts of the bold shade popped up on various runways and though a full look in the colour was rare, our favourite way to wear it this season would be either a pair of amber-orange chinos with a smart blazer or bright, pumpkinorange polo with smart trousers – perfect for adding some warmth to your fall getups and everyday attire. Seen on the runway: DSquared2, Hardy Amies, Etro, Topman Design.
Sharp Indigos
Another primary colour dominating the runways was the cool blue shade of indigo. Razor-sharp tailoring and classic blazer suits were employed by a number of designers who opted for a head-totoe look in the grown-up shade, layering traditional suit jackets over lightweight 102. fact magazine

Nothing says autumn quite like thick oversized layers! Stock up on fur-collared coats, big-hooded jackets and anything that’s exaggerated at the neckline. Green Street
No matter what your style is, green is a shade that is ludicrously easy to wear! And in the absence of greenery outdoors, this is your chance to step in. Though most designers opted for a full on green look mixing a variety of shades, it’s easy to carry off this trend with one staple, standout item like a casual bomber jacket or a suave blazer. An Artistic Love Affair
Sibling duo, Nada and Noora Alawi ventured into the world of fashion three years ago with the sole motive of - Celebrating Art through Fashion. Trying to reinvent a classic accessory, they created the brand ‘Annada’; where beautiful art pieces are replicated on a scarf and stocked at Saks Fifth Avenue. Pallavi Ramesh had a quick tête-à-tête with the gorgeous ladies behind the brand. “Curating art for Annada scarves is one
of the most enjoyable part” says Nada Alawi who is the Founder and Creative Director of the brand. Nada has the tough job of selecting the art pieces which go on the scarf and the selection process is a tedious affair, “ I sit with my creative team and select a palette, based on that we select the art pieces which we receive from renowned local artists” explains Nada. She finds the collaboration with these artists a complete pleasure and honour. Renowned local artist Abbas Almosawi was the artist of Annada’s very first scarf, titled ‘The Secret Garden’. “The Secret Garden is a timeless piece which depicts floral patterns of the 17th Century Persian carpet, it shows the withering of the carpet due to age,” explains Noor. co-founder of the brand she is in charge of the operational and production side of the business. “Annada believes in the best quality, so we make sure that all our scarves are 100 per cent silk, there is hand hemming at all the ends and the signature of the artist is always on the scarf, because the concept is wearable art,” Noor tells us. With the launch of Annada’s Volume 5.1, they introduce new elements into the collection: “We are presenting a new fabric into our collection, which is cashmere and to follow after will be wool and cotton,” reveals Nada. The duo believes that the fabric should be such, that it beautifies the skin and is extremely comfortable. Making the conversation a little witty, we popped a fun question to both

Nada and Noor. If you were a pattern on a scarf what would you be? Intrigued and put on the spot, Nada went first: “I feel I interchange or rather switch a lot, today I want to be a flower but tomorrow I may feel like words or something more contemporary.” Noor excitedly says: “I love colours! As long as the colours are attractive and vibrant, I would like to be a pattern created by a group of colours.” Nada and Noor have displayed their brand ‘Annada’ at Jewellery Arabia, Paris fashion week and many other luxury exhibitions. They are very well-established in the GCC, Germany, Czech Republic and are next venturing in to China. We here think fashion world domination and we couldn’t be more excited for what the future holds for these ladies – good luck!

Chef raman udas
When it comes to Japanese cuisine, Bahrain is well catered for, and with high competition, it takes something special for restaurants in this food genre to garner interest from local diners. This month’s chef ’s table took us up to Ramee Grand Hotel & Spa where FACT went to meet Chef Raman Udas, whose flavourful food at Ruka is fast-becoming the talk of the town…
fact magazine .113
We enter the luxury Japanese restaurant and lounge, Ruka,
straight off the speedy lift and there’s an air of tranquillity that sets in. Inside, Ruka is trendy and spacious with opulent décor, an extensive bar, a lounge area, and big round tables and comfy chairs for diners. The sliding doors lead to a balcony-style seating area where food and drinks can be enjoyed with stunning views overlooking Bahrain and its blue coastline. But we weren’t here to admire the views, we were here to meet the man in the kitchen, Chef Raman Udas, and sample a special tasting menu! Chef Raman hails from Nepal and was brought up in Singapore. “It was my hobby to cook,” he says. “Just so that I could experience a professional kitchen, I joined Sheraton in my country for a couple of months, after completing high school. “Here’s where I understood that becoming an outstanding leader is no different than becoming a chef. Both roles require passion, discipline, faithfulness and an experimental attitude. I then decided to pursue my interest, love and respect towards food and be a chef,” he explains. His strong work ethic and approach to cooking soon begins to show as one-byone Chef Raman sends out the dishes he’s prepared for us (a mix of veg and non-veg
options). First out is the edamame (steamed soya beans with rock salt); miso soup with tofu, wakame and spring onion; crab and langoustine soup with spicy miso and soybeans; and sashimi chu toro which is pickled daikon, garlic ponzu and sesame oil. The edamame is as good as can be; the crab and langoustine soup has a zingy kick of authentic Japanese flavours whilst the presentation of the chu toro is bright and beautiful, embodying the freshness of its ingredients. Next came the kale and fennel salad with avocado and apple sesame dressing – a light and healthy choice; the vegetable gyoza packed with spinach, chestnut and dates, these went down a treat with the wafu dressing;
“I passionately believe that our food choices should be ethical, sustainable and supportive of both the natural and human environment, To honour the integrity of food produced in this way, my style of cooking is all about emphasising simplicity, fresh ingredients and clean flavours.”

CHEF’S TABLE
and the crispy fried lobster with its wonderfully crunchy texture, complemented by the yummy ponzu and wasabi mayo. There was one dish; one simple, wellpresented dish that had us all raving about it even days after the Chef ’s Table visit; the grilled Japanese sweetcorn with shisho butter, one word: REVELATIONARY. We tried to get Chef Raman to share its secret but alas, we failed! Everything to come followed suit, it was simple and neat in presentation, there was no overuse of ingredients, and the dishes had a very clear direction. The stir-fried ramen with seasonal vegetables, nori and dried chilli was a delicious and filling main, as was the vegetable tempura with soy mushroom broth. Between the wagyu beef ribs coated with a thick sauce of toasted pinenuts, pineapple and spicy miso sauce, and the grilled Chilean sea bass topped with ginger, green chilli and jalapeno dressing, we were torn over which was our favourite. The beef was so tender it slid gracefully off the bone, and the sea bass was cooked beautifully with a zesty flavoursome hit. That was all crowned with the omakase dessert platter, and WOW, what a platter it was. Ice cream, sorbet, fruits, three different types of cake – it was like Eid come early! What’s great about the food at Ruka is the portion size. Most things are served platter-style, making them ideal for sharing and adding to the casual dining atmosphere of the venue. Chef Raman and his food is gimmick-free; the menu at Ruka isn’t about being overly innovative or ambitious, instead it thrives on authenticity with the chef ’s simple, unique touch. And this is what makes it great for Japanese food-lovers!

ith a lot of excitement and expectations we walked into this gastro pub, and the first word out was – WOW! What a stunning and spacious café, with spectacular lighting fixtures and décor, carefully chosen to suit the theme of the venue and lighten the mood of its diners. The restaurant has a very quirky European-esque touch, with little touches that enhance its appeal. Art-pieces are dotted around, displaying images of streets, buildings, and markets in Amsterdam, whilst pretty china takes centre spot on the walls and (creatively) a number of bicycles line the upper floor of the restaurant. All these elements really help bring to life the 118. fact magazine

city of Amsterdam right here in Bahrain! Split into two levels with elegant interiors, we started our visit in the lounge area, which carries the sophistication of a bar and blends it beautifully with the classic pub-style of a beer lounge. A wooden folding panel separates the lounge from a chic sitting area, perfect for afternoon tea with the girls, decked out in pink sofas and giving a cosy, relaxed vibe. On the other side, a small space plays host to couples for an intimate date-night with oversized sofas to sink into and wooden flooring. There’s another division, which leads to our favourite spot with slick and futuristic décor that includes replication of delftware (blue and white pottery that resembles porcelain) in the form of vases, plates, teapots and cups. The central area is dedicated to casual-dining with neatly spread tables and chairs and an open bar. The second level is designed for pure fun like an evening out; a sports bar caters
to all you footie fans and addicts, who can watch a match with a chilled bevy at hand! The rest of the area offers laid-back seating with the DJ playing music to entertain you through the evening! You can even dine al fresco on any of the levels (great for the approaching cooler days!). After exploring every nook and cranny (we literally walked to every corner of this stunning venue!), came the food. Every dish on the menu had a lasting impression in terms of taste and flavour. We started with homemade smoked salmon ‘a la minute’ which was served with pickled onion rye bread; it was simply melt-in-the-mouth with a delicate texture. The chicken feta and avocado salad was packed with fresh ingredients and tasted delicious. Then came the dish to die for; the luscious emmental and Gouda cheese fondue! OH EM GEE… it was like cheesy heaven (we highly recommend it). Moving onto the mains, we had the signature
salmon burger with diced salmon and a mixture of radish and seaweed (make sure to dip into the sweet and sour pickle and green mustard sauce – it’s scrumptious!). The Fish and chips was then served; crisp and cooked to perfection followed by the moment we had been waiting for - dessert! Out came a platter of sweet treats full of mouth-watering delights. Our absolute standout was the sticky toffee pudding, served with fresh cream, vanilla ice-cream and red fruits… a classic that was, handsdown one of the best we’ve ever tasted! Café Amsterdam is set to become one of Bahrain’s most desirable venues, we’re sure of it! With an intimate space to mingle, party, catch up with friends, or just enjoy an after work drink, with excellent service, this spot is bound to become popular in no time. The abundance of little alcoves to hide away means there’s a new part of the venue to explore each time and we’re sure it will have you coming back time and again. fact magazine .119

A few weeks ago a Personal Trainer friend of mine was complaining that a client came to her and asked “I’ve been training with you for a week now and I haven’t seen any results”. This unfortunately happens to trainers more often than not and with magazine headlines like these there is no wonder; Solid Abs in 10 Minutes, Shrink Your Belly Easy 7 Day Fix, Torch Those Abs’ in 7 Days. If you truly want to see those Abs’ then you need to focus on Fat Burning Exercises. Whenever you look at these magazines or even watch ads on TV for
the latest gadget to hit those Abs’, have you ever noticed that the men and women have nicely shaped shoulders, arms and legs as well? This is done by working the whole body. So the only way to get the results you want is to burn fat throughout your entire body, strength training routines that hits the entire body and a sound nutrition plan (not a silly diet). You shouldn’t just focus on getting rid of that belly fat but on your entire body and changing your composition and physique as a whole as spot reduction doesn’t work. So the next time you see a headline that promises the world in 10 minutes of a TV ad showing you the latest gadget to get you ripped just smile and walk away. Listen to your Gut! Christal Dennis is a Personal
Performance Coach and Hypnotherapist with a Masters in Psychology, Leadership Development and Coaching. She is dedicated to helping people overcome life’s hurdles and tapping into their deepest potential...
I was quite intrigued to learn that there is much more to our digestive system than many of most probably think. Of course it is responsible for the tough job of digesting all our food, some of which we eat is good for us and a lot of which is not so good for us. I understood that it is a large part of our immune system. What surprised me was that our gut has a huge impact on our mental and emotional health too. It took quite a bit of convincing for me to see the connection. Of course we know that our body is an interconnected system, but the degree to which our gut and brain is connected is quite astounding. To give you an idea of
how connected they are, scientific studies have found that digestive system ailments has led to conditions like autism, ADHD, depression and schizophrenia. The digestive tract actually produces hormones like serotonin. When we were just a tiny embryo the gut and brain started out together as one group of cells which eventually differentiated. The brain and gut are now still directly connected via the vagus nerve. No wonder the gut is called the second brain of the body. If you notice that you are not happy and positive as you know you can be then, it would be a good idea to have a look at your gut health. Kristopher Chahda DJ Pyrokiss is the new music maestro at Elements Pool & Lounge in InterContinental Regency and has been in Bahrain for two months.
island insider What appealed to you about DJ’ing to crowds in Bahrain?
Describe the music scene in Bahrain from your opinion…
Three places in Bahrain for a night out and why…
One of the many things that I really liked about Bahrain is the crowd is really receptive and appreciative to the music I play. And the people are really open and understanding to the different types of music. It was also an opportunity for me to build more crowds outside of Doha, where I performed for the last 15 years.
Even though it may seem like a commercial crowd, people seem to be quick and openminded when it comes to music. They are open to music that is different and that drives me to push out more towards my styles of music, which is more the deep house and new disco vibe. I haven’t really heard much of it here. I’ve been approached by guests complementing my sound and even asked for my playlist.
For live music, I recommend Downtown - it has a cool and laidback vibe. The place also has a great food and beverage selection. Being into the underground scene, I suggest Blaq Velvet if you’re looking for a younger underground scene. Last but not least, I recommend Elements Pool & Lounge, my home ground, where you can hear my live DJ’ing, whilst enjoying Elements’ signature molecular beverages and the beautiful pool.
